Hey guys!

Been super busy the last couple weeks, this coming week isn't going to be much better- work's basically playing games because they assume I'm not going to just quit. Joke's on them though! haha. Not that I have just yet, but anyway.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 and they include Merc's PJW2016 run, to boot!

Anyway guys, that's all the news I have for now, other than if I seem kind of out of it, I'm sorry- like I said, last couple weeks haven't been the best, but it is what it is! I'll do my best here, and hopefully you can forgive any problems! (like me starting late.. haha!)

Aunt Jessica talks an awful lot.

This is a fact you’ve known since you met her for the first time- before that, even, when your mother warned you about that before you left with your dad’s family to visit Japan. So, in the course of dinner, she’s managed to tell you about all the new witches here- twice, in some cases. She’s also managed to ask Kim about herself four or five times.

You’d almost escaped her notice during dinner, sitting quietly across from aunt Katsumi, but Shortly after her last barrage of questions at Kim, her attentions turn to you.

“So Morgan, tell me about your time in the academy? Frank always just said it was boring but I think he’s lying, you know how he is.”

[] He’s not lying. Not much to talk about.

[x] Well, there was that year I spent as a guest at Kure academy...

You shrug noncommittally. “There was the year I spent as a guest at the Kure academy.” You say, setting down your fork and pushing your tray away.

“Ohhhh, that’s right! I’d forgotten you were our Annapolis guest cadet!” Jessica exclaims.

You nod. “You were busy with the guest witches.” You respond with a light smile. “I think you only passed me on campus once.”

“What did you think of our navy’s academy?” Katsumi asks.

You shrug. “The campus is nice, and the town is very pretty.” You say. “And the instruction is good. Demanding, but not impossible.”

She nods. “I would have liked to have come to visit you, but it would have been seen as playing favorites.” She says.

“And I was busy, I’m sorry.” Jessica adds. “We had a lot of young witches going from the academy into the fleet that year, and I was expected to see most of them.”

Katsumi laughs. “You weren’t expected to see any of them. You wanted to, and so you spent all summer and most of the fall and the winter and the next spring visiting each one at their new units. It helped each of them to be visited by their big sister, and so you did.” She says, looking over at her wife.

“Still, I should have gone to see family.” She says. “It’s not every day your nephew is a transfer cadet spending his Junior year at your naval academy and I feel really bad now that we’ve brought it up.”

“Your academy time certainly helped your Japanese.” Katsumi says to you, brushing over Jessica’s apology- it wasn’t really necessary and you all know it.

“You speak Japanese?” Kim asks, and you nod.

“It was very helpful, aunt.” You say. “but it kind of bit me. Maman insists I greet her in a different language every day now. And she won’t count Cajun French and Continental French as two different languages.”

Katsumi laughs. “That doesn’t sound like any of the stories about the mother of night, but you probably know her different than the stories do.”

You nod with a bit of a smile. “You could say that, yes.”

“Forgive me for asking, but what does she think of your chosen profession?”

[x] She was a little disappointed, I think, that I didn’t wind up with DEVGRU

“She was a little disappointed that I didn’t wind up with DEVGRU.” You admit, picturing your mother’s response when you told her you were going into aviation- she was happy you’d picked something you wanted to do, but at the same time, seemed disappointed, even if only a little, that you’d decided to follow in your father’s footsteps, and not hers.

Katsumi and Jessica both nod, as if that’s the answer they expected. “I would have trouble imagining the mother of night would have responded any differently.” Katsumi says, smiling. “I wonder, though, what made you decide to be an aviator?”

[x] I wanted the freedom

“I wanted the freedom.” You respond, looking straight at your aunt. “Up there, there’s no demands on me, no one trying to introduce me to nice young girls, none of the usual crap.” You say.

Katsumi smiles. “So then I imagine this would be a poor time to mention my niece and ward?”

She laughs at the flat expression on your face. “It was a joke, Morgan.” She says, wiping her eyes.

“I’m sure it was.” You say, as Kim, sitting silently next to you, gently nudges you in the side. “Morgan.” She says, quietly. “Somethings-”

As she does so, one of Katsumi’s bodyguard raises her fingers to her ear, then snaps her head around to look at the princess, who notices the movement at the same time.

“What’s-”

She’s cut off at the same time as Kim as the rising scream of the alert siren goes off. You see her pupils shrink in fear even as all of you shoot to your feet. “Oh,” She whispers, almost inaudible over the siren “Oh, those fools”

You’d say you have to agree.

Ok guys, this isn't it for this thread at all. I'm in a pretty good mood since I've decided to cut loose from my current employer, so what I'm going to try and do is run a update at least 2-3 times a week. If that doesn't work out, we'll pick up from where we're at Saturday.

However, I still want to get to work on time, so I have to call it for the night. Like I said, look for further updates this week! till then guys cheers!

Very much so. This place has been wearing me down pretty badly, but I'm afraid that may just be the reality of this line of work.
>>
>>2462022
I'm a historian by training and trade, so any jobs like yours just sound exhausting to me anyway. But I do understand that concept of "this place has been wearing me down" as I'm approaching that with my current employer.
>>
>>2461998
>as the rising scream of the alert siren goes off.
And here it is. This ought to be interesting.

>>2462005
>I've decided to cut loose from my current employer
That place has been making you miserable for a while now from what you've mentioned. Good luck sorting things out.
>>
>>2462039

Haha. It's physically exhausting, mentally numbing. I'd love to have the money to start in on what I want to do- a book about the IJA's tank corps- but that's probably never gonna happen. Research like that requires either money or schooling I don't have! So I'm a machinist and a welder and (Next trip through school) a gunsmith.
>>
>>2462080
Hey, just wanna say this about your future gunsmithing. Ask future potential employers if thats what they want. I work at Wilson Combat, and been told that if i wanted to move up to gunsmith, to NOT learn from schools and most courses.
They would much rather train a person up themselves than hire someone pre-trained, for whatever reason. I dont know about other companies or where you even might go and work, but it might save a touch of effort and some money.
>>
>>2462080
If you want to write a history book I suggest at least getting a minor in history from wherever you want to go back to, if it's even a college. You not only learn different subjects, you also learn how to study them. Otherwise you're gonna be flying blind just trying to research.
>>
So, any guesses on who in particular is attacking, what they're attacking with, and what they're trying to accomplish?

I'll wager it's the chinese trying for a pre-emptive strike via bombers and whatever else they could scrap up that's modern enough to be effective, but cheap enough to throw away on this assault.
>>
>>2462598
If I remember correctly the Chinese thoroughly modified their military.
>>
Oi Ghost, how strained are NATO-Soviet relations? How advanced is the Soviet military?
>>2462733

>>
>>2462733
>>2462849
Considering that most of their old shit got fucked during WWIII this shouldn't be surprising.
>>
>>2462849

NATO-Soviet relations aren't the best, but they're not actively shooting at each other either. I'd say they're in a state of 'low' cold war- the USSR is still attempting to rebuild their military after the war, and has managed to largely rebuild their witch corps and some of their front-line aviation units. The soviets, though, lack a response both to the Fenrir and it's class of superfighters, and to the variable strikers.

Clearly the solution is to send a daring special missions team of the best men, women, and sparklies who barely follow uniform regs half the time to destroy it with advanced equipment vaguely based on in-service tech or advanced prototypes that make what we use look tame.

Wait it's not the 80's anymore.

In all seriousness though GI Joe and Cobra wouldn't be out of place in Strikers '89 'verse.

Especially given the advanced/exotic/just plain wierd gear and tech these guys have.

Also, in all honesty the reason I went down this line of thought is because of Dreamwave's aborted WWII period GI Joe/Transformers crossover and how that could apply to Strike Witches.

Not quite in those words.

So my last surviving grandparent has Metastatic Adenocarcinoma. Not really sure what that means long-term (Or even short-term) but it does mean a few things immediately. First is I've handed in my notice at work- simple fact is I can't and don't want to be working 60-70 hour work weeks and then traveling to see my family down in Fayetteville. Work's basically said they understand fully, and I'm welcome to come back when the situation is resolved. (We both know what that means.) I'm not moving back down- not yet- but I've cut loose without another gig lined up, so I've really got to make that paetron thing attractive, don't I! haha. For real, though, the situation is far from the best, but no sense in whining about it. Once my two week period is up, we'll go to full threads sometime during the week, announced on twitter, and possibly a second during the week, IDK, at least till I find work that's more acceptable to the current situation. they *probably* won't be Saturday, since I plan to be down visiting family when I can.

ANYWAY. with that said, we did plan to start this thread an hour ago, didn't we? Sorry, got caught up playing games- Cait or Curie, choices choices....

You’re thankful, as you run from the base chow hall to the hangar, that you were always noted for how quick you were- it’s not a short sprint, of course, but adrenaline helps a lot. The base itself has gone from a hive of low-key energy to a slow-motion explosion- everyone going everywhere, all at once. a pair of tracked IJA SPAAG units clank into a firing position nearby, their guns already elevated, their radar sets lit up. the roar of jet engines is already starting to drown everything else, though, as the base’s compliment of aircraft begins moving, the first pair of fighters already lifting into the sky, their afterburner plumes hundreds of feet long behind them as they thunder into the early morning.

You make the hangar shortly after your commander- you can see Billy already up in the cockpit of his fighter, fastening the closures on his flight gloves. He nods at you, looking down out of his cockpit and nodding at you, tapping the side of his helmet, indicating you’ll get up with him on the tacnet once you’re in your own fighter.

You’d left your flight suit on- as had Kim, who hadn’t seemed too bothered by the skintight material in public anyway, despite it’s high cut. She’s only slightly behind you as you climb the fighter’s ladder, grabbing your helmet off the ejection seat as you vault into it. You pull it on just as Kim’s feet hit the skin of the fighter, slapping against the fiberalloy as she rushes to her hatch and drops in. The two of you plug in at almost the same instant- she must have left her helmet in her part of the office, same as you.

“I’m bringing everything online.” Kim says, her voice clear over the intercom, if hurried. There’s no trace of fear- it’s all just business. “the computers will take a minute to boot, we’re switching over to combat systems. I’ll run a diagnostic as we taxi, because I know you didn’t do a walkaround.”

You grunt your assent, hitting the canopy and VDNI toggles at the same time. The slight tap at the back of your helmet is forgotten as the VDNI goes to work, and the world around you explodes into colorful life as data starts flooding into you. You start to manage the streams as Kim brings the turbines up, blinking out all nonessential data.

“Runway clearance is granted on taxi.” Kim note. “We’re about two minutes behind Una and Billy, they’re airborne already.” She certainly doesn’t feel scared at all- even, you think, kind of excited. “They haven’t contacted us yet, probably waiting for us to get started up. It’d normally take another minute.” She says. “Should I get them or do you want to? I still want to get the weapons linked in, too.”

“I’ve got it. Focus on the weapons.” You respond, looking down, ‘through’ the fuselage of the fenrir to see the Japanese crew below you pull the chocks and scramble out of the way as you start rolling, pausing briefly to let a pair of Shinden IIs taxi past the hangar on their way to the runway. There’s a short line forming on the taxiway as more aircraft get started up- the runway, even doing minimum interval takeoffs can’t handle more than a few birds at once, and with the entire base trying to get airborne it’s well over it’s capacity.

“Bishop, you airborne yet?” Billy asks, just as you’re about to punch the call through.

“Negative, sir. We’re taxiing now.”

“Shit.” He responds. “Alright, listen. The Lincoln and Reagan are both in the sea of Japan and are under attack right now. Their air groups are up, we’re going to join on them.”

“Both of them?” Kim asks.

“One each. I hate to split us up like this, but one wolf is worth a full squadron of something else. You head for the Lincoln, link up with her air group and see what you can do, clear?”

>>
[x] Aye, sir.

“Aye, sir.” You affirm. You may not like it- in fact, you don’t- but it does make sense and he is still your commanding officer.

“Good luck and good hunting, Bishop.” He says. “Tie in with the Lincoln’s air group commander as soon as you get in range, recover here if you can make it, aboard if you can’t. Clear?”

“Clear, sir.”

And with that the line drops out.

You’re third in line after some other Japanese aircraft- you’ll have a single imperial guard Shinden sharing the runway with you, it seems. Indeed, it joins you as you line up and goes at the same time as you, to help minimize both of your aircraft’s exposure to the turbulent air in your wake.

Kim, in the back, barely seems to notice when you push the turbines into the afterburner range, where they start to draw significantly more power from her, and release the brakes, the acceleration pushing you back into the ejection seat. You’re airborne and wheels-up in what seems like an instant, the full power of the fenrir meaning that, despite it’s combat loaded weight, it’s got a negligible takeoff run.

“We’re airborne.” you say for Kim’s benefit.

“Weapons online.” She responds. “Sensors, too. We’re good to go, Morgan. Do you want me to light up our sensor suite or just use the network right now? I should warn you, there’s some holes in the net. Air defense warnings are up over the entire home islands though. Reports of penetrations as far as Tokyo.”

She leaves unspoken the reason why there’s holes in the net- both of you know full well why that is.

“Leave them dark.” You say- there’s no sense in broadcasting who and where you are, especially not when you know you’re flying right into ongoing combat. The Fenrir’s stealth is good enough- especially in the dark- to be just this side of invisible, and without your sensors up, you can set yourself up to kill a lot of aircraft in your first pass.

“Ok. It means we won’t be able to be weapons free without visuals, though.” She warns. “I’ll safe those down to EO locks only, though it means that the AAM-6s won’t be too useful, they’re not dogfighting missiles. good thing we only have six of them.”

You don’t respond, instead quickly sorting the data with the combat computer. The Lincoln’s battlegroup is only about two hundred miles away, northwest of the liancourt rocks and northeast of Ullang-do, a south Korean island. Her battlegroup, with the Ticonderoga class cruisers Chancellorsville and Shiloh and the Burke class destroyers Mustin, Benfold, and Higgins are being engaged by over a hundred targets. Even with her air compliment, there’s a very real danger of being overwhelmed- there’s simply too many hostile aircraft to prevent everything from getting through, even with two cruisers and three destroyers.

Fortunately, two hundred miles is less than ten minutes- less than five, if you really push. You’re tempted to- the Lincoln's air group is pretty hard-pressed, and you know that somewhere in there is VF3. They’re being forced back- soon enough, the hostiles will be in place to launch antiship missiles. And, given the numbers involved, the CBG’s defenses are going to be saturated. You’ve got to get in and start knocking down aircraft.

Your thoughts are interrupted by Kim. “We’re tied in with Abe’s CBG. Morgan, there’s no other fenrirs there. What should we do?”

[] We’ll worry about it later- we need to start evening the odds.
[] Wait, clarify. VF3 has two fenrirs on strength, where are they?

I'm torn about wanting to know where the hell the 'Caster Wolves are but I'm also aware that VF-3 is something of a political posting now as well. As such, shoot enemy planes first, ask questions about our planes later.

Nothing we can do about it at the moment, and we don't have the time to spend worrying about it.

They're either down for maintenance (possible), somehow they got shot down by lucky or insanely good bastard (since insofar Ghost has never said it's China or the Norks attacking), or there's serious fuckery at work.

The more I think about it while I'd prefer more information, time isn't on our side. At this point assuming that VF-3's Fenrirs were knocked out is all we can do, that and hit the Chinks/Norks hard before they know another Fenrir is in play.

That being said we might want to consider lighting up our sensors once we're closer to the CBG in order to pull heat off of them. Preferably before the AAM-6s, which I'm assuming is the Jap equivalent to the 152 or the 120D, become not as useful. Though there's the possibility that the other Fenrirs were attacked by jamming or hacking because they were running their sensors as it would explain why they were knocked out so quickly. Though the Chinese pulling a Dance on the wolves is possible I'd doubt it as much since the hacking theory could also explain how the Chinese/Norks moved quicker then expected since PACCOM was thinking they couldn't move faster then at least 48 hours. That could just be intel fucking up though. And all of this could be me overthinking things.

>since insofar Ghost has never said it's China or the Norks attacking
To be honest I'd think we probably would have learned if it wasn't China and/or the Norks when we linked with the CBG's net.

Depends, all Ghost has said is that we're being attacked and that there's a lot of plane being used for it, it's the penetrations all the way to Tokyo that are throwing me off on definitively saying it's the Chinese and Norks, or at the very least ONLY them, while I wouldn't put it past them to strike Tokyo, I'd rather think they'd use Cruise Missiles to strike there instead of aircraft as Ghost implies.

I'm not saying it's not them, but we as questers have no confirmation until Ghost says it is.

As much as I'd like to get straight into it, theres no point if we get instantly compromised by something we know nothing about.
Its either something normal where their fenrir on CAP got wiped before they realised they were in combat and then they focused the second one down or theres a specific anti-fenrir thing.
If its the first we can pull a bunch off playing decoy and if its the second we can avoid getting shredded. Either way it would be good to know.

You frown. Two Fenrirs isn’t impossible to kill- with the numbers involved, they could have easily been swamped, especially if they’d been up on CAP alone. But even then- they would have, presumably, done more damage than you’re seeing via the Higgins’ SPY array link. there’s still hundreds of bogies out there- almost too many.

Almost.

Kim feels uncertain, and more than a little frightened, but she’s working the data- you can feel it in the back of your head, a creeping sensation as she reviews everything available over the net. Looking for IFF tags- you briefly see Cassie’s pop up, though your other sister’s doesn’t. That said, there’s no telling what’s going on- the picture is just too confused.

“They’re not anywhere.” She says. “I’ve got everything else, except two witches, but most of the wyverns and ravens are accounted for. There’s data logs available, I can check those, but it’s going to take a while.”

“How long?”

“At least two minutes.”
[] Order her to review the data- could be something going on here, something feels... wrong.

Alright this has officially gone into full spoop mode. Not jumping in seems to have been the prudent choice, two Fenrirs going dark is bad enough, but losing three?
Also, again, the amount of air contacts isn't making any sense. The PLA, especially after the beating it took in WW3 shouldn't be able to field this many even with Nork help.

A strong word. I'd call Fallout 4 "tolerable", with sufficiently heavy modding getting it to "okay".
Then again I'm a salty Fallout grognard who's annoyed that Bethesda insist on writing and designing 200 years post-war as LESS recovered than 84 years after the war was in the first fucking game, and insist on including certain setting elements purely "in service to the brand" (bottlecaps as currency, the Brotherhood of Steel, and Super Mutants being the big ones).
>>
>>2491183
I can understand where you're coming from but most really successful IPs have a collection of things and items that are immediately identifiable with the series. With Pokemon that's the pokeball+it's variants and the monsters themselves. With Digimon it's the Digivice. WIth Final Fantasy it's Chocobos, Moogles, the six original jobs, and that weird hyper-ornamental-yet-somehow-functional design style they have. Fallout's just happens to be bottlecaps, the Brotherhood of Steel, and Super Mutants. And their retro-futuristic stylings.
>>
>>2491297

I mean hell, that doesn't just apply to vidjya either. Star Wars and Star Trek wouldn't have been nearly as successful as they were without the Lightsaber and warp-nacelles respectively.

[x] Order her to review the data- could be something going on here, something feels... wrong.

Two minutes is a long time- a lifetime, for some of the pilots out there, you know. Still, your maman always stressed that, no matter what, you can’t just go charging in like your dad used to, relying on luck and talent to carry you through. That she often said so after you’d managed to get hurt trying to do something ended up driving it into your head- no matter how good you are, going in blind is a good way to have bad things happen.

You nose the fenrir over, staying away from the combat area- not so far that you can’t jump in at a moment’s notice, but far enough that any bandit coming after you is going to stand out.

“Review the data.” You order. “Find out what happened.”

You can feel how unsure Kim is about this- her faith in her ability overwhelming everything else, practically. She hasn’t been thinking about flying or who she does or doesn’t want to do it, she’s not even thinking about going into combat. She’s thinking about how many aviators are going to go down because you’re not going in- she wants to rush, but knows she can’t.

The most you can do is monitor the net as she works. The picture coming in from the region isn’t good- both the Lincoln and the Reagan’s battlegroups are being hard pressed, and the Japanese home islands are suffering heavy raiding, although by nowhere the same numbers. It almost seems like too many aircraft- the Chinese rebuilt heavily postwar, but there has to be thousands of aircraft up right now, it seems like. Far, far too many for them to have built or bought, even in the twenty plus years since the war.

1/2
>>
“I think I have it.” Kim announces a minute later- you’ve been keeping track of the battle in the meantime. “Sending the relevant data to you now.”

It’s different, receiving it via the VDNI link. Suddenly you’re aware of the same things she is- the reviewed data shows sudden, massive swarms of bogies engaging both the Spellcaster Fenrirs, then disappearing a minute or two after their transponders blink out. They seem to originate from large aircraft, nearly a further hundred miles out of the combat area, off the coast of China, though the radar tracks, even from the powerful SPY-1 series radars on the Ticonderoga class ships has trouble firming up the contacts outside of about twenty miles.

“They’ve got UCAV swarms.”

“Short lived ones.” Kim affirms. “They’re either linked to a swarm intelligence or controlled remotely. I don’t know which it is, but I think if there’s any that attack us, I can jam their communications links and at least degrade their combat capability.”

“I hope so.” You say, noting the combat beginning to shift in your direction, with the remains of the carrier air group being forced to break away. “Cos we’re going in.”

You turn into the merge, opening the throttles up to the firewall and letting the howl of the Fenrir’s massive engines surround you. If they don’t know you’re here already, they’re about to find out.

And that's it for this thread!

I'm looking forward to trying this a little bit more without work hanging over my head- at least till I get another job, but that's how it goes, I guess, haha! Hopefully a lot of the roughness here will clean out as it does, but we'll see.
