The battle in the fake Karakura town is in full swing.

Despite the invaders' efforts the four pillars keeping this particular expanse of the living world safe are still standing, the attackers they sent to destroy them having been defeated by a combination of Lieutenants and seated officers. So now they've begun to engage a few at a time with the Captains here to defend Karakura town, seeing them as an obstacle to be removed before any other progress can be made.

Tia Halibel has killed Baraggan Louisenbairn, using her zanpakuto's release to bathe the self-proclaimed King of Hueco Mundo in his own lethal miasma. Her long-time follower Emilou Apacci has also finished a second fight, having easily defeated a fraccion by the name of Tesla Lindocruz who was sent to fight the defenders of the four pillars by his Espada master. And the Espada himself, Nnoitra Gilga, has finally been forced to release by Zaraki Kenpachi. The two are still locked in combat, with the likely winner being uncertain.

Which leaves a young, blonde-haired man currently unengaged.

“So, is someone going to fight me or not?” the quincy calls out at his opponents.

There seems to be some general unrest among the Captains. The plan had been to hold back from a full engagement until some of their enemies' more unusual abilities were more clear. The Sternritter in particular are something of a thorny problem as they're not only strong in absolute terms, but their powers are an almost complete unknown.

“Shall I move, Captain?” Lieutenant Ise asks, raising her hand.

Shunsui shakes his head, holding his hand low in font of her to bar her way. “No. Stay right where you are for now, Nanao.”

“Ichimaru?” the Head Captain calls the short distance to where Captain Ichimaru has been watching the battles with an amused expression on his face. “What can you tell us about this one?”

“Who, the kid?” Ichimaru muses. “That's Gremmy Thomeaux. Dunno what his deal is, but Aizen seemed to put a lot of stock in his ability.”

“That's helpful,” Shunsui grumbles. “Hey, Miss Basterbinne... you have anything to add?”

Bambietta shakes her head. “Not really. The guy's a loner, kept to himself. Kind of creepy if you ask me, but I can't exactly give you anything more than that.”

“Aw, that isn't very nice Bambi!” Gremmy pretends to pout. “And here I thought we were friends!”

“We're not friends!” Bambietta protests angrily. “And don't ever fucking call me that again, it's creepy as shit when one of you old men does it.”

“We cannot allow him to move freely,” Sui Fēng observes calmly.

Komamura grumbles, clearly impatient. “Then why not attack him?”

“I'm waiting for the same thing as you,” Sui Fēng replies cannily. “Neither of us has seen a Sternritter fight with their full strength.”

“Which leaves us at an impasse,” Shunsui sighs. “What a pain.”

You are Captain Komamura Sajin, the only member of the wolfman clan who isn't living out the rest of his days in pitiful self-indulgent exile, and you refuse to waste your time like this.

“Then I shall give you something worth watching,” you tell Captain Fēng gruffly. “I understand your abilities are best left for when they will be most effective, so I'll fight this quincy instead.”

“Someone needs to be the first. May as well be me.”

After a moment, Captain Fēng nods in agreement. “Very well. Good luck, Captain Komamura.”

“So one of you finally decided to fight me?” Gremmy smiles confidently. “It isn't surprising it took you a while, I am after all the most powerful Sternritter.”

“I very much doubt that,” you sigh in relief.

“Excuse you?” your opponent replies, smile visibly shifting into a frown.

“Usually it's the weakest ones who go around proclaiming their strength,” you observe. “I figure if you started out with such a statement, chances are good that you'll be a manageable opponent.”

“Manageable?” the Sternritter repeats.

You nod. “Not easy, I don't imagine, but not as difficult to face blind as some of the other quincy might be.”

It seems that Gremmy is angered by your logic, but aside from his facial expression you can't spot much that would indicate it. His tone of voice in particular hasn't changed in the slightest.

“Then this is going to be an educational experience,” he tells you calmly. “You're about to see things beyond your wildest imagination...”

It does you no good to hold back, and so you decide to attack all out. With any luck you might even kill him with a single blow.

You charge Gremmy with your zanpakuto raised, seeing no response from your foe. So you decide to take advantage and add a shunpō as you get close, releasing Tenken without calling it and swinging for his shoulder from behind.

The massive spectral blade crashes against Gremmy's body, the quincy not even taking a step from the spot where he's standing in midair. You're surprised at the lack of response, and even more surprised when all your attack does is dislocate his shoulder.

“That hurt,” Gremmy admits, turning to face you. Before your eyes the little damage to his shoulder simply disappears, as if you'd never hit him in the first place.

That's an awful outcome. Not only did he not move, giving you no information about how well he can move, but you didn't even hurt him. It also looks like he has a healing ability at his disposal, which makes this prospect much more difficult.

“You seem confused,” Gremmy taunts you. “Like you can't even imagine how I just shrugged off your attack. But it's not that difficult, really.”

“Well, if these attacks of mine have no effect on you,” you mutter, “I hope you won't mind if I try again.”

“Not at all,” he replies calmly.

“Bakudō 61: Rikujōkōrō!”

The six rods of light form with Gremmy at their center, seemingly causing him no concern whatsoever. Then you decide to add to your efforts, solidifying your bakudō before striking. “Carriage of thunder, bridge of a spinning wheel, shine and divide in six!”

You wind up with Tenken, grasping the sword in both hands and bringing it down as hard as you can aiming straight for the middle of Gremmy's head. But he shocks you again, simply stepping to one side through your perfectly-cast kidō so that your downward strike misses him by just a few inches.

Despite not seeing him move you take an immediate step. The blow to your shoulder wasn't particularly hard, but you can feel your bones break from it even as you step away from Gremmy's fist.

How did a glancing blow...

“You seem confused, Captain,” Gremmy smiles calmly. “Your injury is due to the fact that your left humerus is made out of doggie biscuits.”

“What are you talking about?” you demand, glancing down at your ruined left arm. “You aren't making any sense.”

“All I have to do is imagine something and it becomes true,” Gremmy explains. “First I imagined that your kidō was intangible, then I imagined that your left humerus was made of doggie biscuits. Then I imagined I was next to you, and I punched you.”

That... that's not possible. There's no way that such a power is possible. It absolutely defies belief.

And yet...

… the results are undeniable.

You realize that you did actually do him some harm with your first attack, so his defenses aren't perfect. If you can strike him with full force instead of just your Shikai, you might just be able to pull this out.

“Bankai! Kokujo Tengen Myōō!”

With a roar and a torrent of reiatsu you release your Bankai, Tenken rising high into the air behind you. Then you swing the massive blade with both your hands, sweeping it through a building or two before Gremmy effortlessly vaults over it. Which leaves you open to follow through with a powerful new trick: you force the massive body of Tenken to follow you in a shunpō.

The sound of it is thunderous, and you bring the blade crashing down towards Gremmy's body as he's still dodging.

“I've...” you begin to roar, before your entire body explodes with the worst pain. You've been wounded before, in plenty of fights. Your body has endured heavy wounds. But this... this eclipses all of those, with no point to even compare.

Looking over your shoulder you realize what has happened: somehow, Tenken's heavy armor has turned into lava.

It finally starts to register that the howling screams that are filling your ears are your own.

Your entire body is still smoldering, your skin is cracked and bleeding from the spiderweb set into your charred flesh. But somehow you managed to seal away your Bankai despite the pain, barely managing to survive.

It feels like you might even be able to move, but to what end you're not certain. The wounds you've suffered are probably fatal, just not immediately. With prompt medical attention you might live to see tomorrow.

But there is another way. A way to keep fighting... at a cost.

>Use the Humanification technique to continue fighting. You will not be stopped here.

>>
>>2456490
Wolfbro literally stood no chance outside of humanification or a series of exceptionally good rolls. Kenny only won because his Shikai is just as broken as Gremmy's ability, and because Gremmy is kind of an idiot.

>>
>>2456516
it ain't your fault. It's a combination of not thinking smartly and poor intel of Aizen's main vanguard force that wolfbro jobbed. his sacrifice was not in vain.
>>
Poor Komamura. Guess we’re going to need to give him another pep talk after we whack Aizen. Oh well, he made a decent guinea pig at least. Let’s just have Gin impale Remmy before he can do anything. Put his blade through his skull, he’s dead, we win. Should be easy enough with Gin’s Zanpakuto.
>>
>>2456535
And what you're saying is a classic case of not thinking thoroughly. Have you not learned how to take things from context? sure you can do the stabby stabby and brute force, but look at doggo. His powerset was the epitome of brute force and he got shat on by a man who uses imagination as his weapon.

You are Ichimaru Gin, and for the first time since the fighting started you're not smiling.

What happened to Sajin was unfortunate, but you're not about to allow his sacrifice to go to waste. Now you know what Gremmy Thomeaux's power is, what it can do... and with the benefit of some distance you're already starting to see some options for fighting against such a stupid ability.

From what you can tell he has to be focusing on something in order to change it into what he imagines, based on the fact that Sajin could catch him off his guard. And given that his first strike actually caused damage... abilities that he cannot understand or observe will be more effective. In such cases it seems Gremmy's only option is to prepare a defense that he thinks will work, which may or may not prove to be effective depending on how well he's guessed the nature of the attack he's defending against.

While his ability certainly is fearsome... so is yours.

Although it seems like you're going to need to keep him from finishing Sajin off first.

“It seems you lost, Captain,” Gremmy smiles, producing a dozen or so floating machine guns in the air around himself. “Too bad.”

“Impale, Shinsō.”

With a scything slash of your blade you cut through the summoned firearms, before retracting the blade and using a flash step to place yourself next to Sajin.

“Well, it seems you're in a bit of a tough spot,” you muse, almost playfully. “Would you like me to save you, Sajin?”

All you get in response is a pained grunt.

“Well, that's too bad,” you reply to the answer Sajin most definitely didn't give just now. “Because I'm afraid I'm no good with that healing stuff. Really I'm just here to kill this guy, so you'll have to make do.”

Then you glance up to meet Gremmy's gaze. “Hello again, Gremmy. Long time no see. You look well.”

“Slept a little funny on my arm,” Gremmy replies cheerfully. “Now correct me if I misheard you, but I believe you just said you were here to kill me?”

“You heard that right,” you admit. “See, I don't really like you Gremmy.”

“And here I thought we were friends once,” Gremmy sighs. “How tragic. Just like Bambi, it seems I'm going to have to punish your betrayal.”

“Unfortunately for you I've had plenty of time to watch you fight,” you smile widely at Gremmy before delivering your first lie. “And I've already discovered a flaw... one that you don't seem to be aware of yet.”

Gremmy laughs, seeming to disregard your first lie. Good... good. “I always knew you were a liar, Ichimaru. But I didn't expect you to be so blatant about it.”

“Oh, I may exaggerate sometimes,” you keep right on grinning, “and I tell jokes pretty often. But I never lie, Gremmy.”

You thrust Shinsō's blade towards Gremmy while backpedaling to get a little extra distance. Then, even as Gremmy seems to parry with his arm, you deliver your true blow. “You've never been in a real fight before, have you?”

“What?” Gremmy demands, seemingly caught off guard. He doesn't even notice the small cut your shikai left on his arm.

Good.

“If you'd ever fought before you'd know your limits by now,” you continue, slicing through a parked car to keep attacking the quincy from just about your maximum fighting reach. “Whatever could this flaw he mentioned be?”

“You're bluffing,” Gremmy insists bluntly. “I've heard enough.”

Gremmy swiftly uses his powers to do something new: suddenly, there are two of him. By having two clones imagining things at once he'll double the effectiveness of his technique? And there probably is no limit to how many clones he can make either.

But at the same time you absolutely haven't shown enough of your ability to warrant such a move. Which is a clear signal that your tactic is working... you've sown the seeds of doubt in his mind. Now no matter how much he amplifies his abilities, he shouldn't be able to kill you because he'll always imagine that you might have found a way to survive with this invented 'flaw' you alluded to.

Now you just hope he doesn't realize it before you can figure out a way to actually kill him.

“That's real neat and all,” you tell the two Gremmys, easily keeping them at bay for a little while with Shinsō's rapidly extending and retracting blade. “But I gotta wonder about something.”

“If you win, which of you gets it?”

“What is that?” the original Gremmy demands, as you push him to the right with a sweep of your blade.

“I mean one of you is gonna die at the end of this,” you point out. “So which of you gets to die?”

“Well clearly,” the original replies immediately, “he gets to die.”

Then, with a swift push, you knock Gremmy backwards over a curb where his heels catch, sending him sprawling to the ground. Unfortunately he's back on his feet just moments too soon for you to follow through. But still... it's fine.

“You weren't exactly rushing to help,” you observe, sparing the second Gremmy a glance.

The two Gremmys are both still standing, but they're not quite as confident as they were just a few moments ago. While you haven't actually landed a serious hit on either of them the effects of your taunts and innuendo are starting to set in. They're starting to doubt one another... it seems like Gremmy gave his clone too much free will, enough to have his own agenda.

You take a moment to swing Shinsō in several wide arcs, gouging out chunks of concrete and steel before casting your first spell.

“Daichi Tenyo.”

The massive projectiles start to spin and dance through the air, pelting Gremmy and Gremmy from all angles. They try their best to simply phase through the distractions at first, but this proves to be too much for them to focus on: they can't even get a focused attack in with all the distractions, which come on top of your repeated strikes with Shinsō, each seeming to land from a different direction as you use the debris to cover your movements.

“I've had enough!” the clone Gremmy finally shouts, losing his temper and summoning a massive cloud of bright, hard spears above your heads which fall like rain.

Now comes your next trick.

You trace a circle on the ground with your palm. “Seppa!”

The real Gremmy feels his footing give, only to have your zanpakuto collide with his chest and push him straight into the oncoming spears.

With a blast of pressure the spears and the stones dissipate into dust, and you get to watch the real Gremmy heal himself.

“That almost seemed deliberate,” you muse. “Could it be you really are trying to kill the original and take his place?”

“Wow. I... I don't even know what that would be. Is it suicide or homicide?”

“It's impossible,” the real Gremmy asserts. “That is what it is.”

“Or is it?” you continue. “You created him, you gave him all your powers. If he says he exists, who are you to say he doesn't?”

“I can make him disappear if I want!” Gremmy declares, a demented smile tugging at his lips.

He turns to face his copy, but his features twist as he realizes something. “Why isn't it working?”

“You really did just try to erase me, didn't you?” the clone demands, taking a step back. “Me... you tried to erase me!?”

“See,” you muse thoughtfully. “I told you he would. Your existence means nothing to him, and you know it. Because you are him, isn't that right? Who is he to say that you're not real?”
>1/2
>>
>>2457134
“But there's the problem,” you continue with a malicious grin. “You are him, he is you. And there's no way to escape it: you're not real.”

“That's right!” the original Gremmy crows. “You're just a copy, just a thing that I made!”

“But if you're him and he's you,” you point out to the original Gremmy, “and he's not real, then doesn't that mean you're not real?”

“That's absurd. You're being absurd.”

“Or am I?” you press. “You can create anything you imagine, but how do you know that you are actually real?”

“And don't give me any of that 'cogito ergo sum' nonsense, I think we're way past that now.”

“But I...”

“Did you ever have a family?” you ask. “A mother? A father? Because if you had a father you'll have to tell me what that's like, I technically grew up with two mothers.”

“I didn't...”

“You didn't even have a mother, did you?” you ask, feigning sympathy. “How tragic. See, that's what makes me 'real', Gremmy. My life has a history, an impact on others as much as their lives impacted mine. I came from somewhere. You didn't, did you?”

“Because like I've been getting at, neither of you is real.”

And in an instant, both Gremmy and his clone are gone.

“Well,” you muse to yourself, sheathing your zanpakuto. “That was... odd.”

did gin just fucking zero-sum someone?
>>
>>2458901
If anyone's not familiar: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/CHIM

Essentially, in the elder scrolls, the whole universe is actually the dream of a sleeping god.
People in that dreams are constructs of it, and if they become aware of this fact, that can essentially "wake up" from their own universe, and lucid dream.
This can end one of two ways. They can decide that, because they're just a dream construct, they don't actually exist, which causes them to cease to exist. This is called "zero summing".
The other option is that they decide they DO actually exist, even if they're just a dream construct, which causes them to become all-powerful and able to manipulate the universe at a whim, because it's just a dream after all.

>>
>Gin and the Gang discover CHIM
>>
>>2458901
>>2458926

Not QUITE. The end result is nearly identical, but there's an important distinction.

Zero Sum is ego death. It's to cease to have any sense of 'self'. Normally, you can divide the world in to "myself" and "everything outside of myself". When experiencing ego death, the "myself" part is gone. In TES this usually results in ceasing to exist.

I think Gremmy maintained his ego, he just clearly envisioned a world wherein he did not exist.
>>
>>2457219
You are Captain Zaraki Kenpachi, and the way you figure it this is probably as close as you'll ever get to doing that thing people call 'science'. You've started to use two hands to wield your sword, which is supposed to be better than one hand, but now Nnoitra's started using four hands to wield his sword. So if the math holds true, four is greater than two. But if you win it means two is greater than four, which in turn will confirm your lifelong suspicion that math is bullshit.

“What're you grinning about?” Nnoitra demands angrily.

“Nothing,” you shrug. “Just thinking about fighting.”

With a quick dash the arrancar attacks you, bringing his scythe down on your head. You raise Nozarashi and block, to try and push the blade away, but the force of the blow suddenly changes, and instead you find that you're being pushed back as Nnoitra pushes forward. As you disengage he turns, swinging his scythe at your side and nearly impaling you through the side of your chest.

He's gotten stronger, that's for sure, and with two sets of arms he can change what sort of attack he's making mid-swing. But worse is that you're beginning to realize that even when you parry he can add the power from his third and fourth arms to completely overpower you.

So is parrying even worth it anymore... damn it, this is too much thinking.

>Abandon your defense, focus on striking first and striking decisively.
>Try to 'distance parry', focus on your positioning and footwork.

Well, if parrying is out of the question there's only one other way to do it: simply stay out of Nnoitra's reach.

You backpedal to avoid a flat sweep of the scythe's blade, then sidestep to avoid a downward swing. Each time the arrancar tries a different attack you avoid the blade, never straying more than half a step into his zone. If this were a kendo match you'd probably be losing for not showing enough 'spirit' or some dumb shit like that, but at this rate Nnoitra's just gonna end up tiring himself out... and you think he knows it.

That's why he sticks his tongue out at you and charges a cero, loosing the mass of reiatsu at you in a yellow flash.

“Get real,” you grumble, bringing down Nozarashi's edge and splitting the blast in two with its blade. It goes off behind you in two different parts of the fake city, leveling buildings.

Then you figure out what Nnoitra was trying to do: distract you. With two of his hands he grasps Nozarashi's blade, and he shifts the others apart along the shaft of his scythe before bringing it down on the right side of your neck.

With a powerful wrenching motion you turn Nozarashi in Nnoitra's hands and pull it through one of his palms, freeing it in a spray of blood and bony fingers and ducking under the incoming scythe head. But to his credit the arrancar manages to catch you in the teeth with the haft of his weapon.

You step back, feeling a loose tooth with your tongue and eventually pushing it free. Since it's just gonna be an annoyance you spit the tooth out with a bunch of blood, and crack your neck for good measure.

“Man, lucky me Madarame knows a guy,” you mutter. “That'd get annoying after a while... beats losing fingers though.”

“Yeah, you can go straight to hell,” Nnoitra spits.

“And who's gonna send me?” you chuckle. “You? The man with the magical disappearing fingers?”

With a grunt of exertion he cuts off his two ruined arms.

“Hey, buddy,” you try and get his attention. “You're supposed to do that to me.”

“Just shut yer fuckin mouth...”
>1/2
>>
>>2460159
With a pained shout and two spurts of blood, Nnoitra sprouts a new pair of arms to replace the pair he hacked off. And if that wasn't enough each of the arms holds a new scythe... how in the hell?

“That's cool,” you muse. “Also inconvenient.”

Nnoitra drops one of the scythes, now holding two in two hands each.

“Hurts like hell,” he admits. “But worth it.”

Well, shit. Now with two weapons, he may be able to match you with one and batter you with the other, or even switch to holding one in three hands and one in one hand... again, too much thinking.

Well, you can see that he regenerates his arms... but that's it. He had to cut his arms off first, but he regenerated them. Does that mean he can only regenerate the whole arm like that?

So... what happens if you cut off his leg?

You immediately set out to answer that question.

You exchange a series of blows, parrying and sidestepping thanks to the fact that two of Nnoitra's arms are weaker than four, and eventually drop low to sweep your blade at the arrancar's right leg. You don't quite manage to cut his foot off, but you do slash his tendon pretty badly. So when he darts away using that speed trick of his it's with a bit of a limp.

“Looks like you can't regenerate all your limbs,” you smirk.

“You bastard...” Nnoitra pants. “Why won't you just die already?”

“That'd be so boring,” you shrug. “Especially when I'm having so much fun.”

You glance to one side, realizing that you can't sense Komamura anymore. “Huh. Too bad.”

“Which way you looking?” Nnoitra demands. “Last I checked I'm not dead yet, you should be payin' attention to me.”

“Yeah, yeah,” you grumble.

Although you just declared that you were having fun, this changes things. If Sajin is down, then you might not have as much time to do this as you'd like. Which sucks, but that's the way things go.

“Well, it's been fun,” you sigh. “But I think I'll have to finish things sooner than I'd hoped.”

“Drink, Nozarashi.”

In a massive surge of reiatsu you release your zanpakuto, for only the third time. Its form changes even more dramatically than any other you've ever seen, not only lengthening but broadening as well into the shape almost like a vegetable cleaver. Unlike Ichigo's sword yours has no distal taper, ending in a blunt edge, and it's far, far larger. Even if it weren't sharp it could probably fold most people in half around it and kill 'em that way.

“That's your sword...” Nnoitra's eyes widen. “You mean you never had it released this whole time!?

“Yeah, because its ability's a pain,” you sigh. “Totally boring. It cuts things.”

“That's what a sword does you fuckin' idiot!” Nnoitra shouts at you.

“Not like this,” you smirk. “Nothin' like this.”

You raise your blade above your right shoulder, holding it straight up in the classic tonbogiri stance... your aim is to cut through him and anything he raises to defend himself with a single stroke. Then you charge with a roar.

At the last possible second Nnoitra drops his weapons. Has he given up already?

With a roar of his own he raises all four of his arms... and he catches Nozarashi.

Two pairs of hands, one clapped tight along Nozarashi's edge and the other pushing hard from opposite sides of the broad blade, stop its progress dead. And before you can even ask what Nnoitra plans to do in such a position he answers your attack by sprouting a third pair of arms below the first two... which grasp two of the falling scythes in their hands.

Kenny!

The blades slam home, one shattering your ribs and the other slicing deep across your back.

Time almost seems to stop.

Is this what it feels like?

Dying?

Ichigo's a good kid... a bit soft, but a good kid. Even when he was fighting you to save his friend he didn't really want you dead. And Riku... she's never fought you seriously either. She's too 'professional' to let herself loose like that.

This must be what it feels like to be killed by someone in a fight.

Damn it.

Damn it all.

The bastard was hiding two extra hands the whole time, just for something like this.

Damn it all.

You're strong, Kenny!

Huh?

You're stronger than this, Kenny! You're the strongest!

Strong just doesn't cut it sometimes, you guess.

Don't be an idiot Kenny! If you die like this I'm gonna be mad!

That's right... if you die here...

That's it! Go, Kenny!

… if you die here, she dies too. The only one who was never afraid of you, who always accepted you whether you were strong or weak.

With a defiant roar, you slam your forehead into Nozarashi's spine as hard as you can. Fingers and blood fly, and the blade bites deep into Nnoitra's chest. His eyes widen as you and your sword slide past to his left, and the last thing he sees are his own legs falling after him from on high before his body hits the ground.

“And what do you think you're doing?”

Hitsugaya glares at the hooded quincy, who now stands over Zaraki's fallen body.

“What does it look like I am doing, shinigami?” the quincy hisses.

“It looks like you're getting ready to kill my comrade,” the Captain replies flatly.

“Funny,” the quincy replies. “Because that is precisely what I was doing.”

“I can't let you do that,” Hitsugaya insists.

“I assure you, your protests are quite irrelevant,” the quincy counters. “He will die, as will you all.”

“Who are you?” Hitsugaya demands.

“Pernida Parnkgjas, the Compulsory.”

The quincy fires a small blue arrow at the Captain, who raises his sword to strike it out of the air with a single, precise swing. But his eyes widen as he realizes that the quincy Pernida is no longer in front of him, and he swings the sword around his body in a wide arc to block a second arrow aimed at his back.

“You're quick,” he commends his foe. “And you don't telegraph at all.”

“It is a bit too soon for you to start complimenting me,” Pernida replies, and in a blur his cloak shreds...

… only for his attack to be disrupted by the arrival of a second fighter.

“Shunkō!”

With a powerful blast of wind Sui Fēng arrives, just in time to clear the space between Hitsugaya and his opponent.

“Captain Fēng,” Hitsugaya greets his peer. “Was that really necessary?”

“I didn't like what I was seeing,” Fēng responds. “So I acted on my on discre... what is that thing?”

This one's gonna be tricky. I addition to the Compulsory, which since it can affect inorganic material can probably affect ice, there's also the evolution ability and nigh-unkillable tier regeneration.

Thankfully, the nerves can be forced back with concentrated reatsu, and the nerves are sensitive so maybe the cold could help against it.

You are Captain Sui Fēng, and you thought that your average hollow looked bizarre. But these quincies? The hollows you've seen have nothing on quincies.

This one is a hand. Literally a giant hand with eyes.

You see Toshiro's eyes widen as he sees what you're seeing, confirming that all is as you thought it was at first glance no matter how unbelievable it may seem.

“You may have protected the boy, Captain,” Pernida speaks to you, somehow, despite not having any mouth that you can see. “But I attained my objective.”

With a sickening noise Zaraki's arm is ripped into nothingness by the strings you saw lash out for Toshiro moments ago, and Pernida's reiatsu hits you like a bomb.

“You absorbed his reiatsu!?” you realize, shielding your face from the force of the blast.

“Hardly anything so base,” Pernida corrects you. “I evolved to match his reiryoku.”

This is bad.

If Pernida has such an ability, there's no telling how strong he might be or how many people's abilities he's already taken on. This thing isn't a quincy... it's a monster.

the word "evolve" is in ITALICS! CLEARLY IT IS A KEYWORD/HINT FOR US!
Also, a question. If the hand is encased in ice and we use Nigeki Keissatsu on the ice that encases the hand, does that kill both the hand and the ice? Lets try that.

Also cryo Kenny.
I think hitting it at all is no good if we can't immediately follow up on it, in case it can evolve the ability to two-hit kill too. And more targets won't help with all the mutations and cloning (not that Sui knows that yet).

Toshiro leads with a slashing wave of ice from Hyōrinmaru's blade, but the immediate response is a blue arrow that breaks up the attack before it even reaches its target. Toshiro sidesteps the arrow, but the projectile immediately veers in a full circle to strike him from the side.

“Sting all enemies to death, Suzumebachi.”

Although you manage to place a few homonka on Pernida's bizarre body while avoiding those threads of his, you struggle to do so. You're keenly aware that if you make one wrong move you may end up like Kenpachi's arm, simply torn apart. The quincy's speed is also phenomenal... is this what Kenpachi would move like if he actually bothered to learn how to use shunpō properly?

A shot narrowly misses you, and you only manage to avoid the second attempt as it curves back at you by using a shunpō. But in an instant, while you're dodging, you lose sight of Pernida.

The arrow penetrates through your left shoulderblade, and in an instant you smash it with the armor around your right wrist. Your shunkō should be capable of pushing whatever those threads are away from your body, same as when you first engaged, but after seeing what they can do you want to make absolutely certain.

“Bankai!” you hear Toshiro's voice. “Daiguren Hyōrinmaru!”

“That is a fine Bankai,” Pernida muses calmly, retrieving something from the tatters of its clothing with its thumb. “It would be a shame if something happened to it.”

Your eyes widen. “Hitsugaya, seal your...”

But your warning comes too late. Almost in an instant a massive amount of reiatsu is ripped from Captain Hitsugaya's body, and the icy wings of his Bankai are ripped away with them. The result is that the Captain is left in shock, utterly without his Bankai, when an arrow hits his left shoulder.

And to make it worse, the flesh where the arrow strikes collapses as if Pernida crushed it in its fist.

Toshiro howls in pain, his left arm hanging at his side in ruin.

Even worse, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru's wings appear at Pernida's wrist.

How... how is such a thing even possible?

If you withdrew, allowed Toshiro to continue fighting a losing battle... you might have time to set up an attack with your own Bankai. That's not inconsistent with what you were taught, or with how your Bankai is best used. But at this rate... would it even work? Or would Pernida just use the chance to absorb more reishi from other fighters, making itself stronger? And Toshiro's Bankai was just stolen, there isn't any guarantee that the same won't just happen to you.

And if someone got a hold of your Bankai, the results could be disastrous. It would probably only be good for one hit, but damn would it ever be a serious hit.

As much as you hate to admit it... you can't keep fighting here. Someone else is going to have to take on Pernida, at least until you have a clearer opportunity to re-engage on your own terms.

With a shunpō that's fast even by your standards, you scoop what's left of Zaraki off the ground.

Pernida's threads gouge deeply into the concrete where you were standing over the Captain a moment before, but you've already moved again. Hitsugaya can't even put up a struggle before you grab him too, then drag him at full speed towards the spot where Ichimaru has dragged Sajin's body.

“This is getting out of hand,” you mutter bitterly, laying Kenpachi next to Sajin. “Captain Hitsugaya... can you raise a barrier for yourself and the others?”

“I can,” Toshiro nods. “With my Bankai gone... that's probably all I can do right now.”

“We'll think of somethin, lil' Shiro,” Gin frowns. “Fer now just keep that barrier up.”

“Yes,” a familiar voice agrees. “Do not allow that barrier to fall, Captain Hitsugaya Toshiro.”

It's Pernida.

“Ah, so you found us after all,” Ichimaru sighs. “Well, that didn't take as long as I'd hoped.”

“Ichimaru,” Pernida replies calmly. “I'd hoped to get the chance to fight you.”

“Sorry, Captain Fēng,” the white-haired Captain apologizes with a smile you'd almost call 'nervous'. “But it seems I'm gonna need your help to kill this one. You up for it?”

You spare the freakish quincy a glance. “Always.”

So I've decided on my schedule: one more session this Saturday, with a hiatus on Sunday. Next weekend will be back-to-back Claymore.

The situation has escalated.

In the span of just a few minutes three Captains have been badly wounded and knocked out of the fight, which was always a possibility. There are contingencies for that. But what comes as more of a surprise is the enemy that Ichimaru and Fēng are currently fighting.

That monstrous quincy isn't just fast and powerful, its ability is deeply troubling. Not only has it grown in power since taking to the field, its speed and technique were able to press Hitsugaya and Fēng simultaneously. What's worse still is that it somehow managed to steal Daiguren Hyōrinmaru: not counteract, not suppress, but truly steal.

Kyōraku Shunsui doesn't have to wait long for his immediate question to be answered.

A member of the Onmitsukidō appears at his side, kneeling in deference. “Head Captain, a report from Captains Shihōin and Kusajishi.”

“Well?” the Head Captain asks restlessly.

“They encountered a Sternritter capable of stealing a Bankai through use of a reishi-based device,” the man reports. “Currently no known counter, but killing the Sternritter reverses the effect. Converting part or all of a Bankai's reiatsu to hollow reiatsu destroys the Sternritter affected through Soul Suicide.”

“Message ends.”

“I see,” Shunsui sighs. “Relay this information to Captain Unohana immediately.”

“Sir.”

This is a problem. If all the Sternritter can do this... not that it matters much for the Head Captain, he would never use his Bankai around living allies after all. But all the other Captains are effectively hobbled, and the only Captain who couldn't use their Bankai anyway was one of the ones who fell first.

With no warning, Madarame Ikkaku falls.

The culprit, the Sternritter with the rifle turns his weapon towards a new target...

… only to find the spine of a blade pushing it out of alignment.

“I don't think miss Apacci would appreciate that,” Kyōraku leers at the offender. “You meant to challenge me, so here I am.”

“You released your zanpakuto and moved quickly, Head Captain Kyōraku Shunsui,” Lille Barro compliments the shinigami in a flat tone. “Considering your reputation for laziness.”

“There's a certain Captain who'd strangle me to death with my own intestines if I let that arrancar fall,” Shunsui admits, “so it's saving me some trouble in the long run. That gun of yours is also proving to be a problem anyway.”

“Best to nip it in the bud.”

“I see, so you realized the implicit threat to that other Captain of yours,” Lille muses.

Shunsui responds with a humorless grin. “You see pretty good for being down an eye.”

You are Captain Sui Fēng, and what's facing you right now is something horrifying... a giant hand, one which has powers you don't fully understand yet. What you do know is that he has speed enough to keep pace with you, raw power to match Zaraki's, and an ability that lets him take on traits of opponents he touches with his nerves.

He's also got Daiguren Hyōrinmaru.

That last point is what gave Ichimaru some pause. You're certain that his Bankai is something incredible, given how many times Kusajishi has praised it in private. But he's concerned of having it stolen as well, and turned against him. Because if one Sternritter had access to that sort of tool, there's no way of saying how many others might be waiting for the opportunity to steal a Bankai for themselves.

It's a puzzle being worked out behind those fox-eyes of his.

“Are you going to attack?” Pernida demands impatiently, “or must I take the initiative?”

“You look like you'd rather be fighting,” Apacci observes. “So why aren't you?”

“Cause I don't wanna bother with those weaklings over there,” Yammy replies, scratching his head. “Let the quincy trash deal with the shinigami trash.”

“And what about the arrancar?” Apacci frowns. “You calling Lady Halibel 'trash' too?”

Apacci's fist meets Yammy's jaw in an instant, knocking him back off his feet.

You need to make absolute certain that this battle goes in your favor if you're going to stand a chance in the long term.... because proportional losses won't favor you. If you keep trading one Captain for one of the enemy you'll run out of Captains before they run out of bodies to throw at you.

But thankfully there's a weapon in your arsenal perfectly suited for this occasion. If this thing is truly a quincy, and it truly has stolen Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, victory here is impossible for you. Not so for another present.

Tia Halibel is the one fighter present whose abilities and nature most perfectly counter what you've seen Pernida do. Her hollow reiatsu is literally a soul-eating poison to quincy, and her zanpakuto controls water through all three phases, making her something of a natural predator to an ice-type zanpakuto like Hyōrinmaru. The only problem is getting to her... if she leaves where she's standing now it would allow the two Sternritter who are still unengaged to stop her before she could get to anyone else.

“Ichimaru,” you grumble. “I have a plan, but I need you to trust me.”

Gin doesn't even turn his head. “Plans are good. I'm in.”

“So what're we doing?”

“You should know what to do,” you insist quietly.

“Gotcha.”

“So you have a strategy?” Pernida muses. “Good. Then let us see how far it gets you.”

“Bakudō #30!” you declare, tracing a triangle in the air in front of you. “Shitotsu Sansen!”

“How boring,” Pernida drawls, waving its way between the three light fangs... only to take one from behind as you dash past him with a shunpō, snag the fang from the air, and throw it back with a twist of your waist.

“Futile!” Pernida insists, extending its threads as you charge in with your fist held back.

Only you end up smiling. “Haien.”

You're not used to casting fifties-level hadō without an incantation like this... it's not your style, so the effect is weaker than you'd have preferred. But the purple flames prompt a howl of pain from Pernida itself, telling you that your guess was correct.

Now!” you roar.

“Kill it, Shinsō!”

Ichimaru's attack isn't nearly enough to kill Pernida outright, not considering the strength its blut must possess by now. But the point of your fellow Captain's blade does embed itself into Pernida's flesh while it's distracted, and continues pushing with tremendous force... a force that Ichimaru adds to with a series of flash steps.

You also learn in that moment that the rumors about him aren't entirely unrealistic... Ichimaru may in fact be a genius. He immediately realized what you were trying to do and positioned himself appropriately, and did exactly what he had to in order for your plan to work.

All without you actually communicating your plan to him.

“You really are a scary one,” you commend Ichimaru as you catch up with him.

“Now your just tryin' to flatter me...”

“Ichimaru,” Halibel nods in recognition. “I see you have a troublesome opponent.”

“Luck of the draw I guess,” Ichimaru shrugs. “Spare a cup of reiatsu, neighbor?”

“Gladly,” she nods, turning her attention to Pernida.

“So, three versus one?” Pernida sneers. “Very well. Do what you think you must to win... however know that it is futile... against the left hand of the Soul King.”

You are Tia Halibel, an arrancar currently working alongside shinigami against a common threat. The Captains Ichimaru Gin and Sui Fēng have brought an enemy along with them that has given them some trouble: a giant hand that stole Captain Hitsugaya's bankai and which fed on Captain Zaraki's arm.

“What was that you said?” you demand in response to an outrageous statement by the hand... which certainly says something about the statement that it would be more outrageous than a giant talking hand inherently is.

“What he is is irrelevant,” Captain Fēng contends. “He increased his own reiryoku by taking Zaraki's arm, and controls things by attacking them with his nerves.”

“I see,” you nod. “So that is how he does it.”

“Burnin' them seems to hurt him pretty bad,” Ichimaru adds. “But his blut's strong as hell. Puts Zaraki to shame.”

You consider this information carefully.

“Is this thing truly a quincy?” you muse.

At this question the being in front of you seems to tremble with anger. “And what do you mean about that?”

“You are a giant talking hand,” you point out. “And by your own words, the hand of the Soul King. So... how is it that you can call yourself a quincy?”

“And what would a filthy hollow have to say about such matters?” Pernida demands, fingers flexing in agitation.

“No need for name-calling,” you chide him.

As Pernida begins to snap at you for your last comment, you strike.

A sonido with Tiburon wound back brings you right up to the self-proclaimed quincy, who releases what you can only assume are those 'nerves' Ichimaru and Fēng mentioned. Well, this should prove to be an interesting test.

“Hirviendo.”

You release a mass of superheated steam from Tiburon's bulky blade, directing the blast to meet the nerves before they can make contact with you. While it does not stop them they seem to slow, and they start to ripple and writhe as if in pain. But rather than delay long enough to hear a complaint from Pernida himself, you take advantage of the opening and land a powerful, turning strike that severs Pernida's small finger.

And then come the howls of pain.
>1/2
>>
>>2474759
As Pernida tries one more time to use its nerves on you, Ichimaru is kind enough to sweep through them with his zanpakuto.

“Thank you, Ichimaru,” you nod.

“S'no problem,” he smiles.

“Behind you!” Sui Fēng barks, just in time to alert you to a new threat.

“Cero.”

With a sweep of your blade you slice the incoming hand in two before it can complete its attack. So he can regenerate severed digits into new copies of himself?

The severed parts seem to twist and contort before rejoining Pernida's main body.

“That was very painful,” Pernida admits. “No more Compulsory for the time being.”

“I cannot help but notice something,” you comment as you maneuver Tiburon's bulk to intercept a series of burning arrows of light fired at you from tiny bows at Pernida's fingertips.

“And that is?”

“You are still alive,” you explain.

“Does that surprise you?”

“It does,” you nod, narrowly missing on a charge with Tiburon's point. “You show no evidence of soul suicide.”

“Meaning what exactly?”

“That you cannot be a quincy.”

That... seems to have been the final straw.

“DIE!” it roars, before using a hirenkyaku to get behind you. Its fingertips fire icy spears, augmented by Daiguren Hyōrinmaru. At this distance, with that speed, you're hard-pressed to reduce them to harmless water with hirviendo and direct it around your body... only to find his nerves attached to your weapon.

“Cero!”

In a burst of reiatsu the nerves are flung away from the blade, only for the full bulk of Pernida's form to push its way through your blast like a battering ram. The blow is enough to rattle your brain around the inside of your skull a little, but worse the giant fist blows straight past you and nearly hits Sui Fēng full on. In a burst of reiatsu she manages to protect herself, but still ends up slammed into a building. Her impact leaves a deep crater lined with ice, and she only manages to get back up to one knee.

Pernida on the other hand stops practically on a dime, turns, and clenches his fist again. He hasn't been slowed at all this time by the pain he should be feeling from his exposed nerves... something changed.

It's about time you put this to an end.

“I see I will have to use extreme measures,” you admit to the slow rate of progress you've been making against Pernida's panoply of abilities. “Against an opponent like you... perhaps this is the right time.”

“What measures?” Pernida demands, rocketing past you again before spreading its fingers towards the sky, which seems to boil over with clouds as if preparing for some massive attack. “You had released your zanpakuto before our battle even started... this is your limit, and the fact that you even have a limit is the reason you cannot hope to win!”

“You're wrong,” you counter, holding out your blade in front of you as the sky continues to roil and darken. “There may come a day where I fall... but you will not be the hand to do it. Because this is not my limit.”

With a deep breath, you release. “Segunda Etapa.”

A massive pillar of blazing-hot reiatsu erupts from your body as it transforms, reaching high overhead and penetrating the ceiling of clouds that have gathered. A hole widens there, letting sunlight stream down onto the battlefield as the very technique intended to kill you is disrupted by your surge of power.

It feels familiar somehow, this body. It feels almost welcoming... all too easy to slip into after all these years.

With a single sonido, you swing your now more slender blade straight through Pernida's body with a satisfying crash. The individual fingertips manifest bows, the two halves clearly still aware enough for it, and fire at you. But you've already moved again, slicing through the two halves to quarter your foe as the arrows detonate against each other.

Arm-thick tendrils of nerves erupt from the pieces, some splitting and weaving themselves together with others trying to latch onto you. These instantly shred themselves against your skin, but they do have the effect of pushing you back before blossoming into a spreading bouquet of ice crystals.

Not even close to killing you. With a mere thought and a pulse of reiatsu you shatter the hastily-formed icy prison Pernida intended to keep you in, in time to see his main body start to reform.

“Is that all!?” he demands, only to find your blade wedged through his palm.

Nerves lash out at you, trying desperately to gain a purchase or at least freeze you solid, but between your improved hiervendo and your oscillating, rough hierro in this form none of it is working.

“How ironic,” you muse, realizing that this new technique is more like a quincy's ability than anything Pernida has done so far. “To be beaten by a technique like this.”

Then, with a powerful surge of reiatsu, you flash every drop of water in Pernida's body into steam all at once.

His life, so twisted and full of delusions, ends in an instant.

You're alright for a white boy, King.
>>

Poor Komamura. Even with us at the helm he can never seem to pull out that win. It's a pity he got such a mediocre Bankai. And the only decent way for him to get properly strong would completely screw him over in the long run. That's just a raw deal. Kind of want to see about making him strong ourselves. I wonder what a good way to utilize his Bankai would be? It's raw power's pretty impressive, but it's agonizingly slow, especially when faced with higher level opponents, and it's just a giant target since damage transfers to him. I feel like he'd honestly be better off just utilizing his Shikai. He can use Tenken's blade, and the force behind it, but doesn't have to deal with being a giant target.
>>
>>2479277
if his sword was no good, he should have focused on kido and fisticuffs.
>>
>>2479277
I'd argue that his Bankai is actually really good as long as he's not outclassed. Try thinking of it this way, if Riku had Tenken instead of Komamura. How would she actually use it?

For one, the giant is exactly as fast as its user on a larger scale. So already you've got a lesser form of Gin's power. But it's also proportionally stronger AND tougher than the user.
Yes, it's a significant target, and yes it transfers damage. But to anyone who can't actually handle that speed and strength? It's a board wiper.

Really, its only problem is that it works best when punching down, not up.

Actually, I'd like to suggest this as an omake. What if Riku was part of the Werewolf Clan, and got picked up by Sajin instead of Yoruichi?
>>
>>2480312
I might actually write that for shiggles, some time this week. But it won't just be Riku with Tenken of course, so I'll have to come up with a reasonable concept that would work for her.
>>
>>2480312
The problem, however, is that size. Even if it's technically of an equivalent speed to Komamura, that size makes it exceedingly hard to avoid telegraphing attacks, and his attacks have to travel a much greater distance to reach their target, even if he is larger. It's quite impressively strong and tough, but not so tough that a fast foe can't damage it, and if an enemy enters close combat with Komamura it's useless, since he has to focus on defending with his physical body and can't risk attacking without injuring himself. It's excellent for punching down, true, but when does Komamura ever get to punch down? The only time I can remember him not fighting an enemy at least as strong and fast as he is, or more so, is when he killed Barragan's Fraccion, the whale guy. The problem, I feel, is that the resilience and strength gained aren't sufficient to compensate for how vulnerable becoming so massive makes him. If Tenken were tough enough to shrug off blows from enemies of his strength or enemies who are somewhat stronger, it would be a very good Bankai, but even enemies at his strength are easily capable of damaging large bodies like Tenken, even in armour. Other Bankai are more then capable of causing destruction equal to that of Tenken's, but without all the drawbacks.
>>
>>2480353
How did Riku’s time at the academy go? I’ve had some omake ideas rolling around in my head.
>>
>>2480731
The thing is with Tenken is that you actually don't -need- to make those big dumb swings Komamura does. Komamura is just dumb and doesn't understand how mass works. If he were to just do a simple flick of his wrist the amount of force behind Tenken's blade would be fucking staggering. And that's another thing, you don't even need big swings to cut things they just look better in TV and stuff.

And if Tenken can move just as fast as its user then learning how to use fast movement techniques with it should be absolute priority because velocity = power. Just bodyslam someone with Tenken using shunpo and the force exerted would be like a bomb going off, and a big one at that. Komamura just used Tenken all wrong, focusing on strength rather than speed, and he never really got it moving that quickly under any circumstances which just made everyone he fought into yawning-while-dodging city.

Poor Komamura. The sad slow pupper.

“Komamura Riku.”

The dark-haired woman casts a sidelong glance at the speaker. “Little brother.”

Captain Komamura Sajin steps over the crest of a low roof, glaring down through the slits in his helmet as his reiatsu crashes down onto the quad below. “You should know better than to call me that... former Lieutenant.”

“The white haori suits you,” Riku admits, her gaze never wavering as she stares straight through the slits and into her brother's eyes. “Can't say the same about the goofy helmet.”

“And I can't help but notice you aren't taking similar measures,” Sajin observes.

Riku glances down at her hands... or rather, what she has that pass for hands. Of all the wolfman clan in the last thousand years her body is the closest to that of a human, apart from her ears, her fangs, and her paw-like hands, covered in a coating of soft fur from just below her elbows down to the tips of her clawed digits.

“Why should I care what any of you people think?” she snaps. “I've already been condemned to death. I'm not afraid of being judged for what I am, not anymore.”

“Will you be okay with this, Sajin?” Captain Tōsen asks, joining his partner atop the roof.

Komamura Sajin doesn't move... or if he does, those movements are small enough to be contained within his enclosing helmet. “I will do what duty demands.”

“But can you?” Riku asks, narrowing her eyes. “Do you really think you were the only one who got stronger in the last hundred years?”

Tōsen turns away. “I sense Zaraki somewhere nearby. I will deal with him and leave you here.”

“Thank you, Kaname.”

With a single flash step, Tōsen disappears into the distance.

“I take no pleasure in this,” Sajin admits grimly, drawing his sword.

“Don't worry too much about it,” Riku smirks, raising her paws. “Worry about yourself my dear, idiot brother.”

“Roar, Tenken!” Sajin roars, manifesting a giant spectral blade.
>1/?
>>
>>2481072
Riku instantly dodges the downward blow, which shatters the stone tiles that were beneath her feet moments before. The spectral blade is large, but slow and limited in terms of its attack patterns.

Which is to say, easily figured out.

With a shout of exertion Riku thrusts her right paw forward, and the force of the strike shatters her brother's helmet even at a distance. If it weren't for all the years of practice she might have had trouble reading Sajin's canine expressions, but she can tell what he's showing her in this moment is shock.

“What did you just do?” he demands.

“I used zanjutsu,” Riku explains smugly. “I may never have been issued a zanpakuto... but I always had the weapons I needed right here.”

A shunpo puts Riku directly in front of Sajin, who's forced to weave backwards to evade a series of sweeping claw-strikes. Finally an uppercut catches him in the chest, and Riku digs her claws in to a howl of pain. As she pivots around her newly-created handhold she knocks her brother's sword out of the way, and drives her knee into his shoulder hard enough to shatter the armor bands there.

With one massive fist Sajin punches his sister off of him, sending her rolling across the ground until she rolls onto her feet.

“At least you're packing some raw power, brother,” she smirks. “That punch wasn't half bad.”

After a few moments of contemplative silence, Sajin finally speaks. “It breaks my heart that you seem to have lost your way so badly, sister.”

“I lost my way?” Riku repeats, her smirk evaporating in an instant. “That had better be a joke, Sajin.”

“Not at all,” Sajin insists. “You were never like this when we were young. There was a time where you were full of purpose and hope... it's difficult to see you so twisted by anger.”

“Bankai: Kokujo Tengen Myōō.”

With a rumble and a wave of reiatsu, a giant armored warrior rises from the city behind the Captain, towering over both fighters and raising its sword.

“Please, sister, do not hold this against me.”

As the blade comes down, Riku lifts her paw to her face...
>2/3
>>
>>2481127
Captain Komamura Sajin lies on his back, breathing slowly and deeply.

Nearby his sister stands victorious, the wolf-like porcelain mask slowly dissipating into black reiatsu.

“Don't get the wrong idea, Sajin,” she announces, turning her back to the fallen Captain. “Revenge isn't my goal here... though I'd certainly have the right to it.”

“Then what is your objective?”

Riku sighs. “Kurosaki Ichigo's father... is a man who I owe a debt of gratitude.”

“And for that you would turn your back on the Gotei 13?” Sajin demands, his tone more exhausted than angry. “You would resort to hollowfication?”

“That's not all there is to it,” Riku admits. “We may truly be suffering for something we did in a past life, something we've forgotten. It took some help for me to realize that even if a thing is true... that doesn't make it right.”

“So yes,” Riku continues, turning back to stare her brother in the eyes, “I'm here helping the human kids. Yes, I'm here to deal with the madman that destroyed the lives we once had. But I'm not doing those things because I'm angry... I'm doing them because I believe they're right.”

After laying his head back down, Sajin admits defeat. “You always were stubborn.”

“You're one to talk,” Riku scoffs.

“What will you do now?”

Riku turns away again, looking to the execution grounds in the distance. “What we came here to do.”

In my head at least it's most likely that Isshin would have taken Riku on as his Lieutenant when he became Captain shortly before the Hollowfication incident and all but demanded she quit hiding what she is from their subordinates.

Of course the timeline around there is vague enough in canon to allow a lot of possible interactions.

Well really if the fist of tenken accelerates at the same pace as Komamura's fist then due to the size difference a full force punch would probably make an audible boom or something. I'm not really a mathematician so I can't do those calculations though.

Still, if ol Doggo would just use tenken to do a sudden flick he could probably rough people up pretty bad. Imagine an object weighing something like fifty pounds traveling at speeds that would be impossible for the human eye to track normally, shit would hit like a train engine on a good tilt. Imagine if he learned how to do that Oni Dekopin thing through Tenken.

People rag on Toshiro for wasted potential but Komamura is a depressing affair in that regard as well.
>>
>>2483856
I'll go ahead and step in here and offer my thoughts on this: Komamura's main problem is that he himself is a HUGE doggo. He stands just shy of 9'6" and weighs well over 600 pounds. His build is about the furthest thing from a fast, mobile fighter as you can imagine, and virtual word of god is he's by far the slowest living Captain.

Think of an elephant: no elephant has ever been clocked much faster than 16 miles an hour on land, while a human in excellent physical shape can easily top 25. The fastest land animals like cheetahs, gazelles, and antelopes all weight far, far less. The fastest shinigami in the Gotei 13 at the moment all stand 5'6" or less, with Riku being unusually tall for someone as fast as she is. And those supernaturally fast fighters have been honing their skills fighting against each other for decades or even centuries.

So Komamura will always struggle against someone who he can't pin down with a bakudo... which he's also mediocre at by Captain standards.
>>
If we're doing omake suggestions, then could I suggest the following:
Appaci/Halibel's first meeting with Riku from their point of view.
Oichi-sensei somehow complains to Inari about Riku's delinquency.
Lilynette tries to do a release with Starrk as the weapon. She sells it as "being like taking a nap."
Yoruichi & Riku swap swords for a spar.
>>
>>2484032
Even still he can get his arms moving fast. It's just a matter of properly developing the musculature. His physiology is still humanoid so he'd abide but some of our rules in that regard. I never think he'd be the fastest but he neglected some of the basic things a captain should be good at just squeaking by by matching the average at the time. Ultimately I think the real problem is Komamura is utterly uncreative with his zanpakto. Instead of going for big strikes he should be manifesting tenken's off hand to attack while engaging with his blade or by using it to deliberately alter the battlefield to his advantage, he just tries to get in these big dumb swings thinking it'll just murder anything it hits instead of actually fighting with it.

He has great tools at his disposal but he ignores them in favor of things that only work on frankly, idiots. I'll never really be convinced that Komamura couldn't be way, WAY better if he tried and trained properly. Really though, he has a natural fuckhuge strength so he doesn't think to focus as hard as he possibly can on speed? Speed is by far the most important thing in a sword-fight. That and defense of course. Not dying tends to be the point of winning a sword-fight. Even though he'd never be a Yoruichi or a Sui-Feng or even a Byakuya that doesn't mean he should be slower than Kenny who literally just pushes really hard with his legs to get around quickly simply because that is less efficient than using a proper movement technique.

I dunno mang. I can't wrap my head around it is all. WoG is great and all but that doesn't make it make any more sense.

>Appaci/Halibel's first meeting with Riku from their point of view.
Can do.
>Yoruichi & Riku swap swords for a spar.
This would not work. Yoruichi's zanpakuto is fairly tightly bound up with her own memories and awareness, and Riku's is unusually entwined with her soul. They're two Captains who, even if they could persuade each others' zanpakuto to play along, quite literally could not trade.
>>
>>2484228
>Can do.
Yiss.
>Swapping swords doesn't work.
Ok, makes sense. I'd imagine Tenkotsuki gets along pretty well with Yoruichi though.
>>
>>2484207
Yes, his physiology is human-like, and yes, he does follow some rules. He's a humanoid with a body mass around six times Riku's: even if their reiryoku was the same and they had equal technical proficiency, Sajin would have trouble keeping up.

Square-cube law is a bitch.
>>
>>2484228
If it’s omake talk, I had three ideas about Riku’s time at the academy.
Riku’s first day at the academy and first classes.
>You there! What do you know about Kido!
The first day of Riku’s second week at the academy.
>Who is that girl?
Yoruichi visits the academy.
>How dare a mere commoner from the Rukon refer to a Captain with such familiarity!
>>
>>2484284
The thing is he doesn't even need to match Riku. He just needs to not be a walking mass of molasses. There are some enemies he faced that aren't known for being the super speedster type and they just dance around him and that's pathetic. But the crux of the problem isn't that he's slow it's that he's shit at using his shikai and bankai. Getting faster SOMEHOW is just a sort of stop-gap that makes his deficiencies in its use less glaring. He just needs to be smarter at using it. For one by using actual technique with the damn thing. Most of all if he wasn't an asshat recluse and actually partnered up with a non-traitor and had someone to work with him while using his sword that would be a scary team, one guy to keep the pressure up with the other can deliver city-block-shattering blows.

Everything just conspires against Komamura to make him bad, most of all is his own mindset.

>Apacci
Apacci knew that this was a bad position to be in. Those other adjuchas she might have been able to handle, especially if she managed to turn them against each other... which is how a lot of her fights against more than one opponent went. After all it's not hard to do.

But two shinigami showed up out of nowhere, and killed the three adjuchas like it was nothing.

Her legs wouldn't move.

She should be running for her life, hoping against all odds that the shinigami were too lazy or disinterested to track her down and do the same to her that they did to the others. But instead, all she could do was stand there.

“I... can't sense your spiritual pressure,” she exclaims, her voice trembling slightly in a way her body can't even manage. “But you two killed them like they were nothing! What... who are you?”

The woman spares the light-haired man a glance. “Shinigami, here on business. Why didn't you try to run or fight?”

Apacci lowers her head, resigning herself to her fate at this point. “I don't want to die here, but I also don't want to be eaten by the likes of those creeps either. We adjuchas don't have many choices... eat or be eaten.”

“But to be killed cleanly by a shinigami... I can think of worse ways to go.”

She keeps her head low, practically kneeling on her forelegs, willing the shinigami to do it. And why wouldn't she? It's her duty, and she's got the hollow dead to rights. Just make it quick... just hurry up and do it already...

But then the doubts creep in.

Apacci realizes in silence that she doesn't want to die at all. All the years of pointlessness, not having a single reason to live aside from simply fleeing death... it would be so much easier if the shinigami just finished her off. But she's terrified of dying. As worthless as her existence feels, she wants to cling to it just a little longer...

… and then the shinigami sheaths her sword. “Do you have a name?”

Apacci raises her head, staring in complete disbelief. There are so many questions running through her mind, so many doubts about what's plainly happening right before her eyes. Instead, she manages one word.

“Apacci.”

Why did she say that?

And why does this shinigami care enough to ask?

None of this makes sense.

“I don't feel like killing something that isn't fighting back, Apacci,” the woman explains. “It wouldn't feel right. So if you want it all to end... you'll have to attack us.”

Apacci nods quietly. “I see.”

The silence starts getting to Apacci, and just as shes about to ask the woman for her name the two shinigami turn to leave. Apacci lets them take a few paces, the gears in her mind slowly coming unfrozen. With nothing else to do, and no other direction to her existence, Apacci begins cautiously following the woman... the first and only being so far to show her something she'd never known.

It was the first time Apacci had tasted so much as an iota of kindness.

>Halibel
Halibel looks down at the strange trio, stopped motionless on the sandy dunes below her perch. Either they must be extremely disciplined not to flee, or they are frozen with fear. Her next move will be to decide which is true.

With a sonido she interposes herself between the two shinigami. The sandy-haired man, whose reiatsu is difficult for her to assess, barely reacts... his positioning is relaxed, but Halibel can tell by his body language that he is prepared to draw his sword without a moment's hesitation, if she were to prove a threat. But the dark-haired woman is neither aggressively postured nor afraid. Instead she seems, for lack of a better word, fascinated.

Not like the Vasto Lorde was a potential threat, but as if her vast power and blinding speed interested the shinigami.

“Amazing,” she mutters quietly.

“My my, to think I'd ever get to chat with a Vasto Lorde,” the man muses, trying to sound cool and collected. “Lucky me.”

“Why are you here, Shinigami?” Halibel asks, before turning her attention to the odd one in the group. “And why do you follow them, Adjuchas?”

“We're looking for a criminal from our world,” the woman explains, seeming to gauge Halibel's response carefully with each word. The Vasto Lorde was surprised at first that the man did not answer her, implying that the woman is in a position of authority despite her reiatsu being weaker... but then again, a more careful appraisal leads Halibel to wonder just how much potential the woman before her has yet to tap.

This shinigami's true strength... it may even exceed her own, in time.

“As for Apacci here, I think she's still deciding her fate.”

The Vasto Lorde nods quietly, noting the unusual fact that a shinigami just referred to an adjuchas by a personal name. In fact, to her knowledge such a thing has never happened.

“Have you seen any Shinigami around here lately?” the man asks, seeming to have recalled some business that brought them here. “I mean, aside from the obvious? He'd have been wounded already, in all likelihood.”

“I have,” Halibel replies simply, turning her back as she resolves to help these two shinigami find what they were looking for. What she hasn't decided yet is what to think of these two in more general terms, what this development may mean in the long run.

“Come with me, all three of you.”

Apacci finally seems to snap out of her stupor. “Hey, wait a minute! I'm not just gonna follow you like that so you can eat me later, you know! Hey, are you listening!?”

Halibel continues walking, but if her mouth was visible she might have had the barest hints of a smile there. “I won't eat you, so come with me.”

It was unsurprising that Mila Rose and Sung-Sun's initial responses were... less than favorable. Neither one has had any sort of interaction with a shinigami for many years, but no hollow is unaware of them. But it was very surprising when the woman produced a stick of incense, and from what Halibel can tell very fine incense at that. It fills the room with a lovely, slightly spicy smell: it doesn't so much bring back memories, those are long gone. But it does evoke certain emotions, a feeling of familiarity.

The three adjuchas tense up when the woman draws her sword, but begin to relax as she takes it apart. She begins meticulously cleaning it, cleaning all the fittings and carefully wiping the blade. She treats the weapon with immense care, and with the expression on her face... something almost approaching tenderness.

“Your sword...” Halibel observes. “You treat it well. Better than the one I killed.”

The woman nods quietly as she taps one of the blade's retaining pegs back into place. “Of course. Tenkotsuki is a part of me, and yet has her own personality. Her own thoughts, and feelings.”

“Oh?” Mila Rose growls, picking up on the implication. “And just what part of you is she anyway, Shinigami? Your blood lust?”

“Mila Rose,” Halibel cautions her. As curious as she was to know the answer to that very question, the way she asked it was out of line. These people are guests, even if it can be easy for a hollow to forget that it would not do to treat them with undeserved disrespect.

Mila Rose lies down, deferring to her master's judgment. “Of course, ma'am.”

“Well, she's difficult,” the woman begins, evidently choosing her words with care, “she talks too much, and she has absurdly high standards. I guess I'd say she's my pride.”

“Your pride?” Apacci repeats... that wasn't an answer any of the hollows expected.

The woman nods, seeming to Halibel's eye more certain now than a moment ago. “My pride, my self-respect, my dignity. She's the part of me that was screaming while I struggled to survive in the Rukongai, the part of me that was ashamed whenever I was too weak to look out for myself. And she's the part of me that always pushes me to improve.”

Those words, the weight and truth they carry... it's no wonder the adjuchas can begin to rest a little easier after hearing them. The notion of a shinigami 'struggling to survive', of feeling ashamed of her own lack of ability, and especially of a drive to improve herself and her position: it sounds like something Halibel herself might say, if pressed.

Halibel shuts her eyes to rest, but after a few moments a voice draws her attention. She opens her eyes, and notes with some genuine amusement and amazement that the woman has found a comfortable place to sleep against Apacci's soft fur.

“You seem well settled,” Halibel jokes

The woman nods quietly. “I have some questions, if you don't mind talking.”

“What exactly is a Menos,” she asks, “and what are you, Miss Halibel? Why are yo so different from the other Menos I've encountered?”

'Miss' Halibel? Why is a shinigami speaking so politely to a Vasto Lorde? Despite her surprise, Halibel answers her question. “Hollows devour other souls to fill their own emptiness. Menos are the result of some Hollows turning that hunger towards each other. I do not know why.”

“Rarely, a Gillian will be dominated by a single individual ego among the mass of hundreds of souls, which drives the beast to devour its lesser brethren. These become Adjuchas, a more powerful level of Menos. However, this comes at a price: if an Adjuchas ever ceases to consume its peers, it permanently reverts to a mindless Gillian.”

“And Vasto Lorde?” the woman presses, her tone cautious. “How did you get so strong?”

“A Vasto Lorde is the result of an Adjuchas which has reached the level of power where it no longer needs to kill and eat. It is a rare exception to the rule that one must kill to survive in Hueco Mundo.”

“I know of one other like me. Be grateful you did not encounter him first.”

The woman nods to herself, the movement somewhat slow and almost lazy. “An' why're you... well, like you?”

“Who said all Hollows were unthinking, unfeeling hunters?”

But Halibel isn't certain that the woman even heard her response. She's fallen soundly asleep, in a cave in Hueco Mundo, surrounded by menos. Which leaves Halibel to wonder about who she is.

Halibel had encountered shinigami before in the past of course, and it was never a positive experience. But this woman is unusual, first sparing the life of an adjuchas, then conversing quite calmly with a vasto lorde. And now she's using an adjuchas for a pillow? This entire series of interactions struck her as bizarre, and after watching over the shinigami in her sleep for a while it begins to become clear to her why.

For the first time in a long time, someone treated her differently. Not as hollows treat each other, banding together for defense or respecting a power hierarchy, and not even just as 'people' which Halibel herself always tries to do with Mila Rose and Sung-Sun despite the clear hierarchical elements.

For once in her life, someone treated her as an equal... and it was a shinigami of all people.

As Halibel decides to catch at least a few moments worth of rest, she can't help but be amused by the irony.

>Day 1

You are Kusajishi Riku, and today is your first day at the Shinigami Academy. You've traded in your black shihakusho for the white top and red hakama of a female student's uniform, and tucked Tenkotsuki into your sash. Yoruichi has acted as a sponsor of sorts, furnishing you with the new uniform despite not having been formally accepted yet. So before you progress any further in your studies, you'll have to pass the entry exam.

The shinigami instructor who's been administering the test in the wide quad in front of the academy's outer gate motions to you, where you've been quietly waiting as other applicants have tried to pass the exam with varying degrees of success. Most of their reiatsu hasn't been particularly impressive.

“Ah, so you're our special case,” the man muses with a wicked grin. “Alright, let's see what you've got. Let loose.”

You pause, uncertain about your orders. “Um... sir? Are you sure that's a good idea?”

“Just do it,” the man orders.

“Alright,” you shrug.

The full weight of your reiatsu washes over the stunned proctor, whose eyes widen. He wavers briefly in his seat, and glancing over your shoulder reveals that many of the assembled candidates are visibly staggered... some are even on the ground.

“You can stop now!” the proctor insists loudly, drawing your attention back to the matter immediately at hand.

Right,” you nod, suppressing your reiatsu again. “Sorry.”

“You can head on inside now,” the man tells you, sighing in relief. “First class, accelerated course... who the hell are you, anyway?”

“Riku,” you reply, not really sure what else to say. “From Kusajishi district.”

“Kusajishi Riku, then. Congratulations.”

>Day 7

You are Kusajishi Riku, and this is the end of your first week at the Shinigami Academy. Already you've established a reputation, being the only first-year student to have walked in the door with their zanpakuto properly 'awakened', and it's made the social aspect of this process somewhat more difficult.

You've lost some of your sparring bouts but won most of them, proving to have quite a knack for swordsmanship but with plenty of room to improve. But as for your skills at hakuda, two years of intensive training under the Onmitsukidō's officers have left you far ahead of anyone else short of some of the final-year students at the academy. Your technique can always use some improvement, but your handle on the basics is already top-notch.

But today, your class is going to be introduced to kidō.

“How many of you are familiar with kidō?” the instructor begins the class. A few hands in the room go up, mostly belonging to people who you realized early on are noble-born, along with your own. At first some of the noble brats were inclined to challenge you whenever it seemed like you knew anything about anything, but after the first one to call you a “street rat” found his head rammed through a wall that sort of behavior ended immediately.

Instead of a show of technique, the instructor drones on and on about the theory and practice that go into Byakurai... it's almost so boring that you can't keep your eyes open. But thankfully the two-hour lecture ends in a trip to the training range. You can practically feel your eyes light up at the chance to actually do something.

“Now,” the instructor declares after dividing you into three groups of twelve students each, “each group will take turns at the front line. Cast Byakurai, or at least do your best to do so... you will be marked on your control, accuracy, and power as a baseline value for your improvement through the term.”

The first round of students steps up to the line and fires, with varied degrees of success. Some students actually manage to hit their targets first try, though some don't put enough power into it, and most just miss the target entirely. A few poor souls can't even get the shot off before the instructor calls for the groups to switch. The second group fares about the same, with the exception of one notoriously lax student nearly blasting his own hand off by mistake.

But what bothers you is that nobody seems to be casting it without the incantation.

So when your turn comes, you extend your fingers and unleash the spell. “Hadō #4: Byakurai!”

A powerful lance of electricity blasts the target in front of you away before the other students have even finished their incantations, and a volley follows shortly after to basically the same effect as the other two rounds.

“Kusajishi!” the instructor demands. “What was that?”
>1/2
>>
>>2487647
“I... didn't use the incantation?” you offer. “Part of the point of Byakurai is that it's faster than most low-level hadō, which means the point is lost if you take the time to use the incantation.”

The instructor continues to stare at you, her brow furrowed. “Show me the highest level hadō you can perform.”

You nod, drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath and holding her horizontally, the heel of your palm pressed against her spine as you concentrate your reiatsu.

“Hadō #32: Ōkasen!”

The yellow arc of energy slashes through the target immediately to your left... and through every other target down the line to your right as you sweep your blade during the spell to turn it into a scything strike. The power's not what you'd have hoped, but then again your spells still suffer somewhat for abandoning the incantation when you're talking something as high as the thirties.

Your instructor surveys the damage, a smile tugging at her cheeks. “Take the day off... but as soon as classes are done tomorrow meet me here. I think I can offer you a few pointers.”

Considering that Riku got to Lieutenant level in under six hours and there were another eleven months between that and the next entry examination, I find myself doubting that that was Riku’s full power.
