New Haven has a Werewolf Problem. Since arriving in town almost two days ago, a lot of things have happened. A lot of casework, a lot of clues, and a lot of asked questions, all leading up to finding out who was responsible, at least if Rodger isn’t lying. The second day of the case is now drawing to a close, and with it, seemingly the last chance to find out anything of value. The dice will fall where they will, and the werewolves will rampage where they want. Will the planned raid be successful? Will Henry survive the third and final day of the Case? Will the QM stop making the guards so incompetent to allow this first case to actually function properly? Find out now, on Necromancer Detective!

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. In most situations, only the first two dice rolls will be counted, if the threads become more popular this may be changed. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to overlook this rule (a ton of crits later down the chain for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, or ask a set number of questions within a conversation, or during combat. These will sometimes be clearly marked, and sometimes not if it adds to the story. If there are three choices allowed, for instance, each poster is expected to pick three choices in descending order. The first choice of the first poster, the first choice of the second, and the first choice of the third poster will be taken. If two first choices match, the second choice will be chosen of the following poster, etc. If there are fewer posters than choices allowed, the first poster will be given preference, and his second choice will be picked (so the first poster, second poster, and then first poster again), etc.
9. Interviews: Interviews will generally be a freeform set of questions that the readers have to ask the person they are interviewing. No hand holding here, I will purposefully leave up wrong answers or decisions, although for the most part careful readers will be able to tease these out.
10. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

“So what do we do now?” Henry asked.

“What I’m going to do is ask a few more questions. Rodger?” Grom said. The man was staying very calm, it was fairly impressive. “Assuming what you’ve said is true, Rodger. Why didn’t Hafford know about his strange behavior, why did you cover for him? Now that he’s gone why didn’t you raise an alarm?”

“Look… fuck alright let me explain, I realize how bad this all looks. I knew the kids father, great man, he was like an uncle to me alright. Basically after the old man passed away Jonathon wasn’t the same anymore, he took the whole thing hard. I… I tried to get him a job here so he could help feed his family a bit better, they were having tough times right? I just thought it was due to that… but this is so much worse.” Rodger placed his head into his hands. “I figured … I thought if I gave him a bit of space he’d shape up, I know I had plenty of talks with him, and I’d seen some improvement, he’d stopped ducking out in the last couple of weeks… I thought I’d finally gotten through… look he’s a good kid alright? He probably doesn’t have anything to do with any of this… I hope…”

“So your incompetence might get the town destroyed or worse.” Henry stated, souring the mood.

“Like you’d fucking know what it’s like to actually care about people, you just show up, hang a few people, and leave without having to worry about who’s actually affected.” Rodger said

That hurt more than Henry would’ve liked to admit. Still, the man had fucked up bad, Henry felt his anger slip loose for a moment, he lost control as well.

“So you just wrote everything down for anyone to see, guard schedules and what not, didn’t let the ratcatcher do his DAMNED JOB, YOU COULDN’T EVEN GET A GOD DAMNED REPLACEMENT RUNE IN, YOU DIDN’T NOTICE WHEN IT DIDN’T ARRIVE, DIDN’T DO A DAMNED THING! YOU’VE JEPORDIZED THE WHOLE DAMNED TOWN OVER YOUR SENSE OF DUTY TO A STUPID CHILD! A CHILD WHO HAS BETRAYED YOU NOW, THE WHOLE CHURCH EVEN! I FUCKING FIGURED OUT MORE IN TWO DAYS THAN YOU IDIOT CATHARS HAVE IN WEEKS!”

Rodger flashed a look of pure hate towards Henry now.

“IF WE CAN’T FUCKING TRUST THOSE WHO SWEAR THE OATH OF LOYALTY TO THE CHURCH, THEN WHAT? OH LETS FUCKING HANG WHOEVER THE FUCK SO MUCH AS SNEEZES. I KNOW YOU INQISITORS GET THINGS WRONG ALL THE DAMNED TIME! IF WE CAN’T FUCKING TRUST EACH OTHER WHEN WE’RE IN BATTLE OR AT HOME, THEN WHAT? DEVOLVE INTO A BUNCH OF RAVING LUNATICS?” Rodger yelled back. “EVER SINCE WE’VE OFFED OUR NOBLEMAN, WE’VE HAD TO SCRAMBLE TO GET THINGS BACK IN WORKING ORDER, BUT OH NO, WE SHOULD’VE JUST DONE A FEW FUCKING THINGS DIFFERENTLY, LIKE IT WAS SO FUCKING EASY, IF ONLY WE NOTICED THE RIGHT CHANGES IN PEOPLES BEHAVIOR AT THE RIGHT TIMES. OH JUST SHOWER ME WITH YOUR WISDOM YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE. AND YOU INQUISTOR, ITS NOT LIKE YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR OWN INCOMPETANT YOU HAVE TO LUG AROUND, ITS NOT LIKE YOU HAVE TO COVER FOR HIS IDIOCY AT EVERY TURN.”

Rodger looked like he was going to try and lunge, but a quick movement from Grom stopped him from doing so.

“ENOUGH, ARE YOU BOTH GOING TO ACT LIKE CHILDREN, OR ARE WE GOING TO FIX THIS!” Grom roared, his eyes glowing white for another moment. Henry felt his rage subside and a feeling of emptiness take its place… had that been a pacifism spell?

“We need to get things back into order, figure out how much this boy knew.” Grom said. “We need to figure out if our raid is compromised, if it’s worth sending out a scout to see if they’ve moved or not. I’m sure Cassius would volunteer. Henry, I need you to update Cassius, right now me and the Templar are going to go back to Hafford to figure out how much of this is ruined.

“Rodger I will kill you if you try to run from me.” Grom finished, the man was deadly serious. “We can assign blame later, right now I have a job to do. Beyond that, you are done Henry, you do not need to involve yourself in this any further. You’ve gotten far more involved in this than you had any right to.”

1. “What do you mean I’m done?”
2. “Fine.” (will send you back to cassius)

Henry had a long day. He was tired. He’d been covered in literal rat shit at one point. He decided to not press his luck. The ‘trained professionals’ would handle it from here.

“Fine, I’ll head back to Cassius, inform him about what’s going on. But I expect to get paid after all of this, specially for that big one I bagged.”

“That won’t be an issue, I can assure you.” Grom said.

I sure hope not, because this entire case has been, ‘an issue.’

“Thanks.” Henry said, deciding to not put his thoughts to words.

Henry quickly left the meeting room, and made his way towards the back exit of the church. He took the time to peak into the actual cathedral. The place was absolutely packed. He didn’t see Cassius among the congregation. Henry hadn’t pegged him for the praying type though.

The walk back was fairly uneventful, although he still felt horrible that he hadn’t figured out in was Jonathon sooner. Regardless, two weeks of that sorta thing WOULD have made him wary. Maybe he’d been too hard on Rodger? Not worth thinking about now.

The inn was how Henry had left it, and his room was as well. Johnny was where he’d been left, although now Charles was on the bed, bored out of his mind.

“Johnny, come on, I want to head over and investigate the ghost quarter.” Henry said. “I want to make sure we don’t miss anything while we have a tiny bit of daylight left.” Henry decided to leave out the part where he’d been dropped from this whole thing. Sides, since he was INSIDE the city he had a fairly good reason to make sure this whole thing was successful.

“Are we going to get the help of the inquisitors for this?” Johnny asked.

“No.” Henry said.

“Good.” Johnny replied.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The ghost quarter was composed of a central square and a few side streets. Overall the place was quiet, although noise from more active parts of the city was drifting inside. Henry could feel presences in the area, even now. There would be a lot of ghiest activity tonight.

“So what is the plan sir?”

1. Search buildings (roll 70 or higher) (feel free to write in ideas)
2. Search the sewers (roll 50 or higher) (will mean you’re inside the sewers with night approaching)

Look at the entrance to the sewers also, don't enter the sewers. Just checking if the gates or what have you are oiled.
Also look for buildings that have a clear view of the masonry place and the mage's guild. Want to see if someone has been keeping a look out for their plans failing.

What the fuck? Why didn't we report to Cassius immediately like Grom asked? We could've investigated ghost quarter later.

Henry and Johnny searched the buildings for about thirty minutes before deciding to give up. Henry hadn’t really expected to find too much. The odds of him finding anything with the time he had was minimal, not to mention that the ghiests would be out soon. A couple were even flickering into existence now, slowly floating down the streets they would’ve walked while alive. He figured they’d be peaceful but one could never be sure, better to treat them like wild animals, and expect them to be unpredictable.

“Seems we haven’t found much of anything.” Johnny said, a bit sullen.

“I didn’t really expect to, I just… I wanted to do something you know.” Henry replied.

“Sometimes all you can do is pray… although I doubt you’d ever do that.” Johnny said, the man was sincere where others would be sarcastic. An endearing quality for sure.

“I need a minute to think, I might just head back to Cassius, I need to relay him some information.”

“Do you want me to wait in the plaza while you do?”

“Give me a minute to think.” Henry finished.

1. Head back to Cassius (pick with or without Johnny)

“I’m gonna head back to Cassius and update him.”

“One of the inquisitors I presume? I never did get their names.” Johnny asked.

“Hopefully you won’t need to.” Henry replied. “I want you to keep investigating things here, and for angel’s sake stay away from the guards, I really don’t need them finding out about you with them so wound up already.”

“Oh of course.” Johnny said, mockingly bowing. “As if I’d be foolish enough to get caught.”

Already happened at least once in your life. Henry thought.

“Look, you’re a strange man covered in rags, they will try to arrest you if they catch you out here.”

“Of course then.” Johnny said, before walking away and kicking open a door, heading into a building and out of view.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Night had finally fallen now and the inn in central plaza was still the same as ever. Henry had seen the damned name sign plenty of times but he still could never remember the damned thing. Now it was too dark to make out, he’d probably have to grab a torch soon. He could see a few Cathars milling around, although they seemed to be moving far more purposefully now than last night. They were finally on high alert, Henry figured.

The interior was the same, although now there was a lot more hushed whispering. A moment later the innkeep declared that a curfew was in effect and no non church personal could be out, and for everyone to pack it up. A couple curses later, and the patrons slowly started to mill out.

As Henry slowly went upstairs and began motion to knock on the door, Cassius’ voice called out.

“Things open, come in.”

God damned that was unnerving every time.

The room was far neater than it had been, and a few leather bags had been packed and were laying near the door frame. Henry made sure to not trip over them. A couple of candles illuminated the room, and Cassius was laying on one of the beds. Grom seemingly hadn’t returned yet.

“Oh good, you’re back. How’d it go?” Cassius asked. “Also I did get a letter for you, kinda odd how it was delivered.”

1. “Things haven’t gone great”
2. “We know who the mole is now.”

Second these.

Also, ask him what he thinks the safest thing we should do now is. I'm pro saving our own skin here. That means seeing what's going on with Johnny, then just holing up with the kid. I'm also torn about telling Cassius that Grom might want him to scout. I like the idea of having Cassius in the city. Means we're safer.
>>
>>2456362
“Well things haven’t gone great.” Henry said. “In fact they’re downright terrible.”

“Oh do tell.” Cassius said, not moving from his spot.

“Well we know who the mole is now” Henry said.

“Who’s that?” Cassius said.

“We’re pretty sure it was Jonathon.” Henry said.

“Oh… well then…” Cassius said, before holding the letter up. “I’ll give you three guesses as to who this belongs to.”

“No fucking way. Of all the…” Henry said.

“I didn’t read it before you ask, its bad luck to read someone else’s letters… you know we’re probably gonna have to kill him now right? That bother you?” Cassius said, tossing the letter over to Henry like a frisbee. It was all Henry could do to just catch the thing. Cassius… well that was a weird expression the man had now. Probably due to the fact he’d let a potential werewolf slip through his fingers.

“I… no actually… I never really knew him all that well. I get the sense that Rodger won’t like it that much.”

“Well fuck Rodger then.” Cassius said. “Only good werewolf is a dead one.”

The fact that it was Jonathon that sent the letter explained how it’d even gotten here. Regardless, Henry didn’t know what to make of it.

“There is one other piece of news. I’ve been removed from the case.”

“I’m not too surprised. I was honestly shocked Grom kept you on board after you almost went hunting bears.” Cassius said.

“What?” Henry asked.

“Oh… it’s an expression that means ‘died in the woods.’ It’s a bit of a … what did Grom call it… a euphemism I think?” Cassius said.

“Look, I want your advice here. What do you think I should do now? Since we still have this whole problem to deal with”

“Between you and me, I’d say hunker down in town and wait it out. Outside of walls is the last place you want to be when the full moon’s out. It ain’t just gonna be them, every angel damned werewolf is going to be out hunting. Not just our little permanent howlpack here.”

1. “I want to ask you a favor, can you stick around?”
2. Open the letter here
3. Open the letter in a different location (write in)
4. “So how will this impact the whole undead thing later down the road?”
5. “I want my god damned 25 silver you promised me… hell I want fifty since I helped bag that second werewolf.”
6. “Any word on when the Angel’s will be back?”

Henry decided to take a seat and open the letter. He grabbed a candle from the windowsill and got to work. The spelling and grammar were awful and the handwriting was worse. He would have to make a better copy to get any use out of it. Henry grabbed another piece of parchment from Grom’s bag, and got to work translating. He figured Grom would understand, and Cassius hadn’t stopped him.

The letter went as follows:

Dear Henry,

I first of all want to apologize to you for everything that’s happened to you since you’ve arrived here, I never wanted any of this to happen, nor did I ever hold any ill intent towards you. These people threatened my family, and everyone I cared about. As such, I’m going to lie to them, tell them that the Church hasn’t a clue, and that they can attack the town tomorrow night as planned. Vive wants to completely annihilate New Haven, but I still don’t understand how. Even with all of us, the townfolk could fight back if properly rallied. Pitchforks, torches, and faith would work just as well as any other weapon. I don’t want my family to know what I’ve done, or what I have been cursed with, nor do I wish any of the townsfolk to, although I understand that’s impossible. I don’t even know why I’m trusting you, but I have no one else I can go to now. I realize I’m probably going to die tomorrow, but it’s worth it, as long as Vive is put into the ground. She is a horrible person, and deserves nothing more than a painful death. I wish things could’ve been different, maybe we could’ve been friends. I don’t have much but I’d like it to be given to my family, they live in graingarden. I’m sure Hafford would know what I’m talking about. I hope he at least grants me one small kindness, although I know I have no right to ask. I feel the pull of the moon ever stronger, I don’t know if I can even resist it tonight, and I know I will lose the battle tomorrow. My death is necessary for the good of all.

Jonathon

Henry sat the letter down a moment later. The original had been covered in splotches, probably the kid’s tears.

“So Cassius, do we have any word on the Angels?”

“Last we’ve heard they were up near Graingarden, apparently they’ll be back in three or four days. They’ve managed to kill a few of the buggers actually, so it ain’t a complete waste.”

“And the raid?”

“Fuck if I know, I figure Grom will be back soon to tell us.”

1. Give the copy of the letter to Cassius
2. Wait for Grom then give him the copy

“The raid might still be on solid foundations.” Henry said, before handing the copy of the letter over to Cassius.

Cassius took a moment to read it. Before cursing and bolting upwards.

“For once a werewolf was useful, hot damn. I need to run over to Grom, and I need you to get outta here. I ain’t leaving you alone in here alone with my stuff.” Cassius said.

“I had one last question, when did Jonathon deliver this to you?”

“About twenty minutes ago, but he’s probably long gone by now, not worth tracking him with no sunlight either. I have to get to Grom NOW, so get out of the dang room alright?”

“I really hope this works out…” Henry said, snagging an unlit candle before leaving. He was nearly knocked down the stairs by Cassius rushing out. The man slid down the railing and leapt off the banister before bolting outside. He hadn’t even asked where Grom WAS. Still, it’d probably be fine.

Henry slowly made his way out onto Central Plaza, than took his time walking towards the ghost quarter. He figured he could find Johnny around there, probably standing out in the open like an idiot. He should’ve commanded the guy to stay out of sight. Then again it’d be a real hassle to find him with only moonlight for illumination.

Fucking hell, this sucked.

Jonathon, well Henry hadn’t known the guy too well, but this still sucked. It would’ve been far better had he been in on it. Then well… Henry wouldn’t have felt too bad about the lad having to die. The other guy from before, at the stonemasons… he hadn’t known that guy at all so it wasn’t too bad, and he was kind of an asshole. Maybe Gerald had been right, maybe he really wasn’t cut out for this sort of thing. He’d done cases in the past, but nothing like this. Nothing so real, Fucking hell. He knew what it was like to be stuck with no good options due to circumstances that were not your fault. Henry’s whole fucking life had been like that.

He wasn’t about to cry over it of course, he didn’t have the time, and he was rapidly approaching the ghost quarter.

The place was… well more lively? Bit ironic since all the inhabitants were long dead. Henry figured that Johnny was probably the most alive one there, beside himself of course.

Johnny was leaning against one of the buildings. Luckily with all the moonlight Henry could make out the man. Neither of them had torches, since keeping that sorta thing around would’ve been dangerous. The candle he had grabbed would be useful if they would be entering a building.

“So what’s the latest?” Johnny said, not moving from his position.

“Well shit is… I mean it’s better?” Henry said. “The mole wrote me a letter… it was Jonathon…”

“Another person I haven’t met.” Johnny responded, before noticing Henry’s expression. “I’m sorry, I seem to have upset you. It was not my intention.”

“Its… Its fine, the sooner this is all over the better.” Henry replied.

“I found something of interest.” Johnny said. “That building over there, it had quite a strange setup inside of it. The whole place is oozing… something. Not literally of course, we don’t need to deal with slime, but there is some kind of nature magic contrivance occurring there.”

“Green?” Henry asked.

“Exactly.” Johnny replied.

Henry glanced past Johnny and noticed one of the Ghiests had taken a bit of interests in them, the thing was glowing dimly and sported Cathar’s robes. serving even in death.

“I have a dumb idea.” Henry said, motioning for Johnny to keep still.

“What are you…?” Johnny asked, watching as Henry walked over to the Cathar Ghiest.

“I wanted to report a trouble maker in that house over there.” Henry said.

The ghiest looked at Henry for a moment before beginning to walk off, continuing the patrol that had ended long ago.

“Oh fuck you too then.” Henry said, before casting his Ghiest Trap spell. The Cathar Ghiest froze before striding back over.

“Why did you even ask?” Johnny said.

“Sometimes they surprise you and actually act normally.” Henry responded.

The trio made their way over to the house Johnny had marked out. The place looked fairly normal, if a bit run down. The door was open and Henry noticed he didn’t sense anything magical coming from inside. Had the place been warded? A couple of ghiests were milling around outside of it, seemingly having some kind of conversation. Although Henry couldn’t hear the words, even up close.

“We’re lucky you found the place. Not even an angel would’ve noticed I don’t think.” Henry said.

“I do have my uses.” Johnny replied. “There were no traps of any kind inside and I was fairly thorough. It seemed whoever set the place up didn’t expect to have company.”

Just for the record, with spells. There are 5 types of mana overall, Henry has access to three

Red mana, black mana, and Blue mana

He has 2 pips of blue mana, 3 pips of red, and 5 pips of black mana.

The ghiest trap costed a pip of blue but that will regen after he sleeps tonight.

“Alright Cathar, you head in first, scout the location, and let us know if there are any traps.” Henry said.

“How will it tell us if it cannot talk?” Johnny asked.

“Shit, right. Alright, two fingers for traps and one for all clear, alright?” Henry said, watching the flickering Ghiest nod and then stride into the building. It didn’t even bother to go through the door, and simply walked through a wall. About a minute and a half later, the Ghiest came out another wall, holding up one finger.

“You’d think by now you’d know you need to be specific with instructions.” Johnny muttered.

“It’s late alright, lay off?” Henry said.

The two strode into the building. Henry’s nose was assaulted with the smell of rotting wood and mold. The foyer was normal but the first interior room was practically overgrown with plants and glowing green runes carved into what appeared to be fairly recently grown wood. Couldn’t have been more than a month old. From what Henry could tell this was a fairly competent warding set up. Probably not the same person who’d set up the bomb rune trap at the masons, since this was obviously functioning correctly. Henry hadn’t noticed a thing from the exterior. He seriously doubted anyone else would have. Fairly smart to use a location here away from prying eyes.

It was a weird feeling stepping on moss indoors. The ceiling was covered in all manner of roots as well. One could hardly tell that this had been a home at one point. Henry also noticed that there was a ghiest caught up in the vines on the far side of the room. Probably the previous inhabitant, and probably kept there for safe keeping to prevent it from interfering from whatever had happened here. The vines themselves had seemingly been enchanted. This sort of nature magic was far out of Henry’s area of expertise. He had heard of this sort of thing being applied to the undead, but generally only those out on the fringes even bothered. More work than it was worth in his opinion.
>>
>>2462354
“So I’m guessing the alter is what you’re worried about?” Henry said. Pointing to the sole piece of stone in the entire room. It was a rudimentary alter, with dried brown stains on it. Probably some animal or something had been sacrificed here. He really doubted it had been a human. He’d know if it had been THAT sort of ritual.

“We need to destroy this unholy thing. I’ve been waiting far too long to, so come help me.” Johnny said, grabbing for his sword and approaching the alter.

“Stop.” Henry said, causing Johnny to halt. “That thing isn’t unholy. It isn’t a demonic alter, that much I can tell. Sides we don’t know what the hell it is. For all we know it could kill us… me if we try to disturb it.”

“So what would you have us do.” Johnny said, annoyance creeping into his voice.

1. “Fine, lets destroy this damned thing.”
2. “We should guard it. Would you be willing to stay here overnight?”
3. “You should guard it, I’m ordering you to stay here and not damage it. Do not let anyone come near. Don’t get smart with me either, do not so much as look at it funny.”

“I’m going to try to commune with the ghost, whack me in the head if I start acting funny.” Henry said. “Specially if the damned thing disappears.”

“If you get possessed by a human ghiest you will deserve it.” Johnny said.

The communion was fairly easy, it cost a bit of blue mana to open up contact, but only a sliver of power. Henry felt a voice deep inside his head. The ghiest he assumed. The voice was female.

“Out…. OUT….. home… HOME…” The voice said. Henry watched as the ghiest slowly motioned to the door. “Release… no right….” It continued.

It didn’t take a sage to figure out what had happened to it.

“Johnny, help me get this thing loose.” Henry said, before unsheathing his shortsword and taking a good whack at the roots holding the ghiest.

To his amazement, when he drew back his blade the vine had already begun to mend itself. He’d never seen anything like it before. A few more attempts established that this effect was persistent and the vines were being powered by some kind of enchantment. Probably the whole room was.

“This whole room might be the nexus for that rune network in the sewers.” Henry said, giving up his attempt to free the ghiest. Probably for the best, the thing might’ve tried to attack them considering that they were technically trespassing.

“Out… out…” The Ghiest continued. Its voice still faint in Henry’s mind, Henry didn’t want to keep this sort of contact up much longer, this was already risky enough.

1. Ask the ghiest specific questions (write in)

Alright, here's the idea. We have the bomb runes.

We're going to check the kitchen if there's some variety of cauldron, pot, anything that can help direct the explosion. We're then going to toss the bomb runes into that thing, aim it at the altar, leave the building, and trigger the runes to detonate.

“You’re right, we can’t just leave this thing here. I have an idea, I still have a few bomb runes left. Lets try and find something we can use to direct the blast. I want to be sure its destroyed.”

“Any suggestions on what to look for?” Johnny asked.

“Something sturdy and made of metal, like a cauldron.” Henry responded, before canceling the communion with the ghiest. The thing had started to become annoying, and wasn’t really providing any useful information.

“Well that’s easy then.” Johnny said, heading into another room and coming back with a cauldron that had some intricate carvings on it. “I believe this belongs to whoever had lived here… her.” Johnny said, pointing to the ghiest. It should be effective.”

The thing was coated in rust but was sturdy as all hell, and had probably been a fairly nice piece of ironwork when it had been new.

“Oh hell this is gonna be fun.” Henry said, rubbing his hands together then pulling out the bomb runes. He flipped over the alter carefully. Checking at a few points to see if the thing was reacting. Luckily it was far less dangerous than a demonic alter and put up no resistance. After it had been flipped, Henry placed the bomb runes inbetween it’s two legs and then placed the cauldron on top of the bomb runes, covering them up.

“This is going to be memorable.” Johnny replied.

The ghiest was now wiggling furiously, perhaps it understood what they were about to do.

“Sorry for the damage in advance.” Henry said. He felt they’d have to run after doing this, and not just because the noise would alert the Cathars in the area.

As the two left the building and got to a good distance Henry reflected back on his decisions. He couldn’t have fucked up too badly if he could do something as fun as this. With a flick of his wrist and a tiny bit of mana, a large resounding BOOM echoed from the house. The remaining glass in one of the windows shattered outwards and a few planks were blown off. After that a large secondary burst of green mana flowed out. Causing more damage to the place. Then a resounding shriek, probably from the ghiest… they had just destroyed its home, even if it had been for a good cause.

“I believe that’s our cue to run.” Johnny said. “Unless you wish to do something else here for some angel forsaken reason.”

For the moment the ghiest wasn’t pursuing them, perhaps it was unable to leave its home.

1. “Lets get the fuck out of here.” (will return you to the inn)

Henry figured they have a few minutes before any armed response showed up. The Cathars would probably wait till they had the advantage of numbers before charging into this area. This meant that he could check the sewers without the harassing them.

“Did you find the local sewer entrance when you were searching?” Henry asked.

“Yes, it was in that alleyway, but we really should be going…”

“It’s practically on our way out then, come on.” Henry said, running off and waving for Johnny to follow.

Ducking down the alleyway, Henry was presented with a lot of garbage and debris, and a small rusted iron grate in the ground, hanging open.

“That’s worrisome. It hadn’t been opened when I was last here.”

“Well it could’ve been Jonathon making his way out right? Fuck you think he was watching us?” Henry asked.

“No clue, you never ordered me to keep a look out.” Johnny replied dryly.

The sewer entrance hadn’t been well cared for, no oil this time, probably because there were no guards posted in this location. Henry started to get a better look at the entrance before he heard a much louder shriek and a chill crept up his spine. Turning towards the noise, he figured the ghiest had taken into the sky and was trying to track them. Not only that but he was now hearing the sound of feet on cobblestone, probably the town Cathars. Maybe it would be best to leave them to deal with the angered ghiest.

Henry was generally not afraid of a lot of things. But right now, he REALLY wanted to get out of here. An angered ghiest was one thing, and the Cathars were another, but he had no business being in a dark and cramped sewer at this hour of night, especially since he already knew how dangerous it was. With a quick movement he dashed further down the alleyway and out of the ghost quarter. He heard the sounds of combat echo from the area as he moved further away.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As Johnny and Henry approached the inn, neither said a word. They might’ve just saved the town for all they knew, but perhaps it didn’t matter much. Henry didn’t feel all too good about this whole set of affairs.

Henry quickly grabbed some parchment from his bags and sat down at the single desk the room provided. He waved over to Johnny and began to collect his thoughts. First of all, Jonathon had been the mole, and seemingly he was going to sacrifice himself so the raid would be successful. Secondly, he was now off the case, which was kind of horseshit but he really wasn’t complaining. Next up, Hafford was a complete and utter asshat, Rodger wasn’t quite an asshat but he was considering placing him onto the asshat list. There were the issues with the runes in the sewers, it seemed to be some sort of monitoring system, probably set up by that Vive woman or someone else talented with magics. There was also the fact that most of these werewolves didn’t want to be doing this. Reluctants he figured. Lastly, everyone was incompetent except for himself, he’d always believed this but this entire case had further cemented this line of thinking… perhaps Johnny was the only other person in the world who wasn’t. That about did it he though, finishing up.

“So how’re you holding up Johnny?” Henry asked, slowly stowing away his notes.

“I’m doing alright, as you know none of this really fazes me anymore. I’m more worried about you, and the child as well.”

“Not this again...” Henry said, annoyed.

“I’m not bringing that up again, it’s pointless now. But Henry, don’t feel you’re responsible for things that are well out of your control, it’s not worth beating yourself up over it.”

“Thanks Johnny.” Henry said after some thought. It really was appreciated, Johnny was probably the only reason he’d stayed sane all these years.

Henry got up from the desk, carefully put away his notes, and collapsed onto the bed, He had a lot of things to worry about but he could worry about them tomorrow. Right now he just wanted to sleep, and sleep for a long while.

“Wake me up around… I don’t know, nine in the morning?” Henry said to Johnny, who simply nodded in response.

Henry’s dreams were fairly peaceful for once, it was a welcome relief. He saw feathers falling from the sky, the leftovers of angels. Each holding the promise of a better tomorrow.

============================== Chapter Start =================================

Henry was woken up by an incessant tapping on glass. It had nearly startled him awake. Tapping on glass was generally a bad noise. Light was streaming into the room, and Johnny wasn’t around. So it wasn’t that Ghiest or anything else too nasty. Johnny had probably wandered downstairs or outside after the sun had come up, maybe waiting for nine to roll round. It must’ve been before that.

TAP TAP TAP.

Okay, what the hell was that? A bird maybe? Henry turned his head over and saw Charles still sound asleep. Someone being that deep of a sleeper was incredible to Henry, what an easy way to get your throat slit. Checking around the rest of the room, and being careful not to give away he was awake, he found it exactly how he’d left it. Nothing had been moved, and seemingly nobody else had entered. He’d strangle Johnny if he was able, he should’ve been more specific with his orders, telling the damned skeleton to STAY PUT HERE. Maybe he was making breakfast?

In one swift motion Henry grabbed and unsheathed his sword, leaping up from his bed to face the window. A startled yelp emerged from a cloaked figured holding onto the windowsill. The window hadn’t even been opened yet. The person, upon seeing Henry pointing his sword at him, let out another yelp and lost his grip, falling a story into the cobblestone alley below and landing with a thump. Henry opened the window and glanced out, holding his shortsword at the ready. The figure seemed to be groaning in pain, and Johnny had wandered out the back door into the alleyway.

“Hold him there until I get downstairs.” Henry called out to Johnny, before grabbing his things and running down the steps. Charles was STILL asleep, good lord. He’d have to smack the boy awake later, that sort of thing was just annoying.

Running outside, Henry came upon the scene. The cloaked figure was lying prone, and Johnny, still wearing his disguise made of rags, had a knee on top of the man and was placing his full ten pounds of weight into him, and had his sword at the man’s throat as an actual effective method of keeping him still. The man was still squirming a bit, so he hadn’t been knocked unconscious.

“So good that you’ve joined us sir.” Johnny replied. “I suppose this scoundrel fell from your window? Such an awful racket this time of day.”

1. “Who are you?”
2. “What are you doing here?”

“What the fuck are you doing here Jonathon.” Henry said as he leaned in close to the figure. “I figured you’d be smart enough to stay out of town if you decided to not die by Cathar.”

“I… I…” Jonathon said, the kid sounded close to crying.

“What are you doing here?” Henry asked, waving off a weird look from Johnny. “Johnny, let him up, and keep an eye out on the alleyway.” Henry said. “I’m going to trust you kid, but you’ll die real bad if you kill me, I can assure you of that.”

“I… I’m not here to hurt anyone… I never… look.” Jonathon said, trying to compose himself. “I don’t know who else to go to alright? The raid has already started, nobody is left in town except the bishop, and they’d kill me… I don’t want people to know what I’ve done… I … they’d blame my family too.”

“You’re probably right about that.” Johnny said. “Blasted Inquisitors would likely torture them for information if they find out.”

“You’re NOT helping Johnny. Look kid, tell me why the HELLS you’ve risked coming back here “

“It’s Vive alright? She’s started early by herself, she slipped out of camp… she’s going cast a spell or something, and it’s going to destroy the whole town. We have to hurry, please. She’s in the old watermill south of town, that’s where she said she’d be to the other two she trusts at camp. We have to hurry now! “The runes in the sewer, do they have anything at all to do with that?” Henry asked, grabbing Jonathon’s arms and shaking him slightly.

“I dunno… I don’t know much about magic.” Jonathon said. “I just know since that’s what she’s muttered to herself, I think… I think when you killed Yolk… she snapped. She was crazy before but now… and she was talking about her special place being ruined the other night, when I got back, the others… uh… I don’t remember their names but they were also pagans, they were holding her down. She was screaming bloody murder.”

“Fucking shit, that was probably when we blew her shrine up.” Henry said.

“You what?” Jonathon asked.

“We destroyed an unholy thing, no shame in that.” Johnny replied. Pot meet kettle.

“So why the hell would she just leave and ruin their surprise attack.”

“She’s gone nuts, muttering to herself now, the others… even the ones she was with from the start are all afraid of her now…. She strung one of them up… with plants… just tied him up to a tree and kept him there… she almost killed the man.”

Henry was liking this less and less now…

“Look, fuck it. We need to move NOW.” Henry said. “We can talk about this later. Alright?”

“I just want to stop her… she can’t be allowed any closer to the capital.” Jonathon replied… “I … I think they’re planning on doing this to more settlements.”

“Then we need to hurry.” Johnny responded.

“I… I know the safe way through the sewers, you can’t stay too long in one place or the rats will get you.” Jonathon replied. “It never seemed to work on the ratcatcher though… he was crazy so nobody believed his ravings about us.”

As the group began to enter the sewer, Henry kept his eyes out for any runes. As he went to grab the first one they came across, his wrist was grabbed by Jonathon.

“If you touch them the rats will attack you, we’d be eaten in minutes. That’s what Vive told all of us at the camp” Jonathon said, wide eyed. “I don’t think she wanted anyone touching her runes.”

“Fucking hell, so much for an insurance policy.” Henry muttered to himself.

As the trio left from the sewer exit, Henry glanced up into the tower. Nobody was on guard up there. They’d really called everyone in. The run to the inn was short and uneventful, the river flowed lazily on down, Henry really wanted to go fishing after all of this was over. Something calm and relaxing for once.

The inn was a fairly old wooden and stone structure with several wheels all turning in time with the flow of the river. The building was actually quite large, with a few rooms forming outshoots from it. There were a couple of entrances, and more disturbingly, a dead body with its throat torn out. Looked like a dog or a wolf’s bite from what Henry could tell. A zombie’s bite would leave more of the throat intact, and anything larger wouldn’t have left anything intact.

Henry unsheathed his short sword, as did Johnny. Jonathon was armed with a simple pike He’d picked it up after he’d fallen in the alleyway. The thing would give him a bit of range on whatever he’d be attacking.

>>
>>2465729
Besides. We fucked up her altar thing. Nothing much she can do anymore.
There's literally no reason to put ourselves into such a risk.
>>
>>2465742
you haven't considered she might be setting a new casting circle up
>>
>>2465738
I don't exactly follow what that had to do with anything.
>>
>>2465748
That's where his family is, or were.
>>
>>2465743
Can she do something like that so quickly? The altar we blew up seemed to be something that had been put a lot of effort into.
>>
>>2465742
And the runes in the sewer still were glowing, the alter was most likely a power source. And even though we destroyed it the runes still have the power they were already fed. Or else they wouldn't still be able to influence the rats.
>>
>>2465755
So we're just there as a precaution to the city blowing up, or being turned into a giant tree or something.
>>
>>2465753
The circle is just the place you cast from, the rune network was the hard part probably. Nature magic is something Henry, and therefore we don't know too much about.

It WILL destroy the city if it gets popped though.
>>
>>2465762
the basic jist, what henry would realize, is that they blew up her spell circle, although a far more naturally created one than Henry was used to. This one may not function as well but might be able to get the job done. The setup was probably the runes, or other things they didn't notice.

The effect? Well thats not known by Henry and I'm not a nice enough person to tell you what'll happen if it goes through. It WILL result in quite a bit of death and destruction. Probably will mean the inquisitors will have a lot of work to do.

Are there any windows on the building where we can peek into and check the situation before going in?

I like the corpse throw plan. Means if things go south we could resurrect it for some help. How good of fighters are zombies?
>>
>>2465776
first part, sure, lets say there are two floors in the building, there are windows at several intervals, and Henry could see into the first floor, and the second if he stood on someones shoulders, although he'd risk being spotted, so I'd make a roll for stealth

As for the other. An individual zombie isn't so much of a fantastic fighter as a hardy one. Fairly hard to kill them other than ripping them completely apart or using magical means. In terms of fighting ability, it can depend on who the person was in life (do they known HOW to fight), and how good the necromancer is.

Henry is a decent necromancer, he's been doing this about a decade and a half.
>>
>>2465780
I think it's better than just strolling in.

So the zombie would be a good distraction at least.
>>
>>2465780
Let's check the windows before we go in
>>
>>2465794
so what I'm hearing is this, Have the zombie charge in guns blazing, follow it up with Henry and Jonathon (assuming he can be convinced, which should be fairly easy)

Then Have Johnny attack from the waterwheel entrance

Do I have this all down fellas?
>>
>>2465803
Check the windows first though.

Also the idea here >>2465649 was to throw the body inside without resurrecting. During the curse of battle of things go south then we can resurrect it. At least I think the idea was as such.
Though I kinda like your idea too

Henry decided to take the time to gather some intel before charging in. Just rushing in without thinking had never really been his style. The only reason he was even trusting Jonathon was that’d he’d pegged the kid as too dumb to really lie well. The only reason he’d kept this whole charade going was dumb luck and the fact nobody thought to ask him, least as far as Henry was concerned.

The bottom floor was storage, filled with both logs and processed lumber. He thought he saw a couple more bodies in one of the rooms, but it was too dark to really tell. He could have a real party going if he could get to the damned things. Creating a couple zombies in a sealed off area wouldn’t do him much good.

“Johnny, give me a boost I want to see into the upper floor.” Henry said.

“Just be careful, don’t take too long or you might be spotted.” Johnny whispered.

Johnny quickly gave Henry a boost. Johnny had always been surprisingly strong, but the skeleton pretended to have some difficulty. Smart move. He knew Jonathon’s secret but that didn’t mean he had to know his quite yet.

The upper floor was about what one would expect from a mill. The wheels Henry had seen from the side led into some sawblades which were slowly turning. There was a pile of discarded logs to one side. One of which was partially splintered to pieces. There were five wolves stalking around, emitting a green glow occasionally which fed into the circle that was in the center of the room. The magical circle was emitting STRONG green, a lot of green, more green than Henry had ever seen in his life. In the center stood a bedraggled woman muttering some sort of spell, Beast-touched Vive. She was completely lost in it, but the wolves would notice him if he lingered. The room also had some plant growth, although not nearly to the extent that the circle back in the ghost quarter had had, this had been made quickly and dirtily. Probably had cost Vive a fair bit of mana to make, that’d give him the advantage.

Now for the actual attack. Heading in and charging forwards would probably be the best plan, surprisingly enough, Vive wouldn’t be able stop her channeling too easily, and that would allow Henry and co. to deal with the wolves.

1. Inspect the body more thoroughly (roll 70 or higher)
2. Cast raise dead on the body (will blow cover with Jonathon)(will cost 0.2 black mana and will take several minutes)
3. Snap cast raise dead on the body (will blow cover with Jonathon)(will cost 0.5 black mana but will be instant)
4. Leave the body alone
5. Write in

Decision part 2:

1. Head into the building through the main entrance (pick order of entry)
2. Head into the building via the side entrance(pick order of entry)
3. Head into the building via one of the waterwheels (roll 70 or higher)(pick order of entry)

So she is on the second floor casting spells? What is the floor made of? Could we shoot trough the floor with strong enough lighting spell? We could just break the floor underneath her, have her fall and let Johnny make short work of her
>>
>>2465837
Minor argument against casting raise dead here:

1. I'm not afraid on Jonothon knowing we're a necromancer. He's now an outcast to, and the inquisitors will surely notice he's not among the dead. He'll be on the run for sure. Also, he's the decent sort.

2. BUT, if he gets captured, who knows what he'll reveal. Inquisitors are probably pretty damn good at interrogation

>>2466058
When they turn into werewolves they don't control themselves and I don't think they can control it (remember the guy we captured?)
>>
>>2465837
“Look Jonathon, is there any chance you could become a werewolf and help us out here?” Henry asked, a bit expectantly.

Jonathon went pale as a ghost upon hearing that. “You… no no, I d-don’t think you know what you’re asking for, I… I don’t have any control over myself… and the memories… what I remember is never good, I don’t want to if I can help it.” Jonathon says.

Johnny placed a hand upon his face. “Did you really just ask Jonathon to turn into a raving uncontrollable beast to stop a madwoman, I don’t think we’re that desperate yet. Besides in case you haven’t noticed, the moon isn’t even out.”

“Oh… right… shit.” Henry muttered. He’d been so caught up in planning he hadn’t considered the obvious.

“Maybe you could bolt her through the floor?” Johnny asked. “Maybe even collapse it?”

“I sure as shit don’t have enough power to do that, I mean yeah I could aim through the floor but I don’t have the slightest fucking clue where she is, and if I miss there goes our element of surprise.

A large fwomp sounded off, showering glass onto the ground from the second story windows. The spell seemed to be gathering a lot of intensity now.

“I think w-we’re running out of time Henry, come on now!” Jonathon said, inching his way towards the main door. “We n-need… we need to hurry.”

“Here’s the plan.” Henry said, going and grabbing the dead body. “We’re going to shove this thing… fuck its heavy, Jonathon help me.”

“W-what are you-“

“Just shut up and help me, it’ll be a distraction.” Henry said, eventually getting the body up. “We’re throwing this through the main entrance then the two of us will charge through the side entrance. Johnny, you go up the waterwheel, should be easy enough. Will give us the element of surprise. We should deal with the wolves foremost, I really don’t want to deal with the backblast of mana from this right away…”

“Rodger.” Johnny said, rushing around back and wading into the waist deep water of the river.

With a heave Jonathon and Henry threw the body through the main door and into an empty room, causing a decent amount of racket. Henry heard growling and what appeared to be wolf footsteps coming down the steps. As the two rushed around to the side entrance and burst through, something occurred to Henry. There was only one set of stairs, and Johnny would be facing Vive alone.

Before he could go and tell Johnny he noticed a pair of wolves had entered the room and had noticed the two of them. Shit.

The Wolves were far smarter and faster than Henry was expecting almost as if they were being guided. As he rushed in and swung his sword, the first wolf dodged out of the way, drawing him in. After his second swing, the thing lunged at him, biting hard into his arm and forcing him down onto the floor. It was all Henry could do to keep the thing away from his throat. He was worried for a moment his arm would shatter, the thing was STRONG. However, it wasn’t unnaturally strong, if he could pry it off he’d probably be alright.

Jonathon loosed his pike but the second wolf was already closing the distance. It ducked right under as the pike sailed on by. Jonathon was ready though, and grabbed his shortsword out at the wolf, causing it to pause and wait.

“FUCK” Henry screamed out as he felt his arm bleeding. It took him a moment to realize, but he was at point blank range now. He could fry this fucker real good if he wanted. The wolf was thrashing a bit, which couldn’t be good for his arm.

Decision by Henry:

2. Cast bolt (will instantly kill wolf, roll 40 or higher to avoid self-harm due to direct contact)

Henry let lose a huge bolt of lightning from his arm. It was fortunate he’d practiced casting from other parts of his body or he’d be straight fucked. The wolf let out a horrid noise before falling over dead, burnt to a crisp from the inside out. Henry noticed during his casting a piece of the bolt arc up the mana chain that had been connected to the wolf, something he hadn’t noticed before… was she using them as a mana source or something? He’d have to figure it out later.

His thoughts were interrupted by a shriek from upstairs, then a large burst of green. Then an explosion in the distance, oh fuck. What now?

Jonathon used the confusion to attack the wolf, slicing deep into the thing and causing it to back up a moment. It looked between Henry and Johnny before whimpering and scampering back upstairs.

“WHO!” A Vive bellowed from above. “WHY DOES EVERYONE FAIL ME, WHY WHY WHY…. WHO HURT HIM?” She screamed as Henry heard the dog get to the top of the steps, it had trailed a path of blood.

“YOU!” She screamed. Henry could hear footsteps up above, as something landed on the floor, had to be Johnny… shit. He heard a bunch of footsteps, four wolves worth, then a thump. Johnny would probably be unharmed by the wolves but a mage might be able to do some real damage to him.

Henry saw Jonathon offer him a hand. He grabbed it thankfully. It was nice to have SOMEONE reliable for once.

“Come on, we can’t waste time.” Henry said.

Decision:

1. Charge up the steps, as a group.
2. Randomly cast a bolt spell up into the ceiling (roll 95 or higher)
3. Raise dead on the corpse (snapcast only, will use up 0.5 black mana)

Things had gone far enough, time to drop the act and get serious. Henry quickly checked on the wolf. It had been burnt to a crisp, and it’d be useless as a corpse, angel’s damn it all. The woodcutter or whoever he’d been would be fine as a zombie however.

“Jonathon lend me your sword ey?” Henry said, rushing over to the corpse. Jonathon followed grabbing his pike as he did so.

“We s-should be ru-“

“Just shut up and fucking listen!” Henry shouted. Before swiping the sword out of Jonathon’s hand.

Henry used a spell he’d used thousands of times by now, raise dead, and he snapcasted it. The burst of black mana left his hands and entered the corpse, the thing quickly stirred.

“Get up you lazy bastard and grab this.” Henry said, handing the thing the shortsword handle first. Henry heard a crash behind him. Turning he saw Jonathon on the ground, terrified and trying to shimmy away. “G-GET BACK FOUL THING” He said, holding his pike up. Made a bit of sense, thing would make short work of him if he told it to attack him now.

“Look you dumbass, I’m coming clean alright, I’m in control of it, and we don’t have time to dawdle.”

“W-wha-“ Jonathon said before being slapped by Henry.

“DON’T ASK QUESTIONS, COME ON!” Henry said, as he grabbed Jonathon by the shirt and pulled him up, before shoving him towards the stairwell. “GO GO GO!”

He quickly followed as the kid ran up. “Follow me you fucker.” He told the zombie, which haphazardly shambled after them up the steps. As Henry passed a window he took a moment to glance out of it. New Haven looked unharmed, no smoke or anything… Wait where was the bridge? He didn’t spend more time on it and continued up the steps. Jonathon was crouching down and waved to Henry. The second floor was quite a scene.

There was a wolf that’d been sliced into two chunks, and another on the ground whimpering in pain with several slashes on it, it’d been the one they’d chased off. Johnny was being dogpiled by three of the wolves, while Vive was slowly approaching him and muttering violent things to herself. Henry saw green… and was that red mana? What the hell?

“DIE YOU VILE THING!” Vive screamed, shit, she must’ve seen through his disguise.

The wolves were too far away to reach with his sword, but Vive wasn’t. Lastly the Zombie was slowly making its way up the stairs, but Henry didn’t want to wait for it, he had a bad feeling about whatever spell vive was casting.
Decision by Henry:
1. Charge in at Vive and swing your sword (roll 3 D100, 65 or higher required for damage)
2. Cast bolt at Vive(roll 1d100, 55 or higher required for damage)
3. Cast bolt at one of the wolves pinning Johnny.

Henry and Jonathon shared a look, nodded at one another, and then leapt into action. Vive shouldn’t have had time to react. But she quickly dodged out of the way of the first blow, her eyes glowing green. What kind of spell was that? Yolk had done something similar. She had a twisted and blackened piece of metal in her hands, Henry’s dagger… and her eyes… she’d gone quite over the deep end. The closest thing Henry could think of to that look was when a vampire entered a blood frenzy. They’d have to end this quickly.

Jonathon sprang into action, launching two quick jabs with his pike. Vive dodged out of the way of the first one then used her hand to push the pike down onto the ground before launching herself at Jonathon, ready to place the dagger between his eyes.

Henry wasn’t going to let that happen, and he planted a foot firmly in the ground, and swung hard, hitting Vive in the leather armor covering her chest. The blade should’ve gone clean through at this range, but stopped short, flowing downwards and away from Vive.

Vive tumbled to the ground as she rolled behind Jonathon, screaming curses and profanity. Jonathon was shaken but quickly regained his composure. Good lad, seemed he’d received some training during his short stint on the guard.
>>
>>2467481
>
Vive had a horrid gash in her stomach, she shouldn’t be able to even move, heck, she should’ve been bleeding out with that. But another green glow from her eyes and she stood up, she looked… a lot tougher now, and now there were flickers of red in her eyes too. Henry didn’t know what sorta things you could do with red and green mana…

“red… cloak….” She muttered, before clutching her head and shrieking. “YOOOOOUUUU!” “YOU YOU YOU YOU!” There was much more red mana flowing around her now.

Double fuck.

The wolves began to leap to attention, one holding Johnnys arm in its mouth. That was trouble but could be fixed. A skeleton was fairly easy to repair, just cast some black mana its way. Johnny Slowly sat up, still clutching his sword in his right arm. Vive probably had forgotten he was undead in her rage. Jonathon was still looking at Vive, so luckily he hadn’t even noticed Johnny.

The zombie had finally come up the stairs behind Vive now. She gave it a glance and let out a curse. “OF COURSE YOU’D KNOW SUCH FOUL THINGS, DESPOILER OF LIFE!” She shrieked at Henry. That was probably the coolest thing anyone had ever called him.

“YOU, DUMBASS, KILL THE WOLVES!” Henry yelled at the Zombie, which began to shamble over to the wolves. Vive then leapt at it, sticking her dagger into its head a couple of times before jumping back as Jonathon tried to stab her. Henry guessed she’d never really fought undead before, a dagger was about as useful as a piece of grass against one. Let alone a piece of slag.

Henry then leashed a bolt of lightning at her, but she was too quick. She flung her dagger through the bolt towards Jonathon, but the thing wasn’t very aerodynamic anymore, and fell to the ground before being struck once more with lightning. Jonathon didn’t even realize how close he’d come to dying.

Vive reached to her side and grabbed her own shortsword out, but this had some sort of etching on it. Henry didn’t know if they were ornamental or what. Vive then snapcasted something, drawing more mana from the wolves. The building began to rumble, but beyond that nothing else happened. Henry thought he saw a couple of vines creeping up past the window frame…

“WHY DOES NOTHING I DO EVER WORK!” Vive screamed out. Before slashing at Jonathon with her sword. But the lad was already backing out of range. Jonathon then stabbed at her arm, hitting Vive and sending her back, clutching it. She then let loose another spell. Henry watched as her skin began to become brown like tree bark. What the fuck? She was still pulling in more mana from the other two wolves, probably trying to get what she could before they died. The battle was turning in their favor now.

Johnny decided to take a swing at two of the wolves, bring his blade sideways. The first wolf dodged out of the way, still clutching his arm, but the blade sank deep into the second wolf, and going through one of its legs in the process. The thing gushed out blood, then quickly fell over, whimpering. Johnny knew his way around a sword.

The other wolf dodged out of the way as the zombie finally managed to shamble over, still thoughtlessly holding Jonathon’s short sword. Johnny stood up, not even paying his missing arm any mind. His helmet had a few scratches on it, but it’d still be useable.

Vive began to stomp and scream. “WHAT HAVE I EVER DONE TO DESERVE THIS, WHY CAN’T I JUST WIN, ONCE IN MY DAMNED LIFE, ALL OF YOU, I HATE ALL OF YOU SO MUCH! I WILL GET YOU ALL I SWEAR IT!”

“Shut the fuck up!” Henry called back. “You’re a fucking cunt, and I enjoyed turning that fucking bastard piece of charcoal, now stand still so I can do the same to you!”

“Y-yeah!... uh… you…uh..” Jonathon stammered. Kid would need practice.

Henry and Jonathon managed to get Vive to back off for a moment, Henry used this opportunity to slowly circle around Vive and block off the stairwell from her. He didn’t want the bitch running off now.

The battle had dramatically shifted. The three remaining wolves were sandwiched between Johnny and the zombie of the woodcutter. One of the wolves was slowly bleeding out on the ground, its back left leg cleanly sliced through. It’d be dead soon, allowing Henry to raise it, although with only three legs it wouldn’t be too much use. Vive was a bit worse for wear, she’d taken a few bad hits but her armor had taken part of the blows and her unnatural vitality was troubling. Henry felt his left arm throb, the wolf biting it downstairs hadn’t helped him too much. Lastly there was a dead disemboweled wolf on the ground, killed presumably from Johnny’s efforts. The last wolf, the one that Jonathon had hurt downstairs, and Johnny had further injured, was feebly trying to stand, whimpering and then falling back down to the wooden floor. Time to make his move.

Henry attacked Vive with the sword. He saw her dodge easily but that had been expected. He too the moment to cast raise dead from behind his back, aiming at the wolf. While the thing began to stir Jonathon jabbed at Vive carefully with his pike, slowly forcing her towards the wall.

“KILL HER!” He called out, hoping Vive would think he was talking to Jonathon, in fact he was talking to the wolf.

Henry smiled as he heard the newly undead wolf run up behind him, and at the last moment sidestepped out of its way as it lunged at Vive. Vive was taken by surprise, and she should had her throat torn out, but her eyes flashed green and at the last moment she grabbed the undead wolf by the jaw and slammed it into the floor. A resounding crack and the lack of movement from the wolf was a testament to Vive’s raw strength. The wolf’s spine had been completely shattered and it would be useless. Of concern was the fact she’d nearly sent the thing THROUGH the floor. Henry began to think she was using some kind of spell to speed up how quickly she could react. Probably the same thing the big werewolf had done the prior night. No other way it could’ve avoided it otherwise.

Johnny and the Zombie began swinging their weapons at the wolves, with Johnny having a far better time of it. By the time it was over one of the wolves had been badly hurt and the zombie had finished off the previously injured one. All that remained was one more wolf. Vive was growing visibly angrier as her wolves were killed off.
>>
>>2469333
Jonathon took the chance to lunge with his pike. Vive simply held out her hand in response, her eyes and hand glowing with green mana.

“WAIT!” Henry screamed at Jonathon, but the lad was already mid strike. The second the pike touched Vive’s hand it shattered like glass, a wave of green mana traveling up it and into Jonathon, a moment later Jonathon took a nasty slice from Vive’s shortsword, having been caught completely off guard. The next moment, Jonathon received a hard punch to the face from Vive, sending him flying back across the room, into the zombie woodsman.

 I’ll be doing rolls going forwards, easier for me to keep track

Jonathon squirmed on top of the zombie for a moment, before regaining his senses and grabbing for the things shortsword. It was somewhat pathetic that Jonathon couldn’t even overpower the thing. Henry didn’t have time to help him, as he was trading sword blows with Vive. Even though the woman was terrifyingly strong, she was losing steam now. Henry thought she might’ve finally run out of mana.

Johnny rushed over, beginning to trade blows with Vive as well, even managing to get a couple of hits in on her.

Henry took a moment to step back and raised the final two wolves. It was time to finish Vive off. The wolves began to stir. During this moment of concentration, Henry saw Vive trying to back up but finally coming to the wall. She was trapped.

“NO NO NO!” She screamed. The first traces of fear were coming into her eyes now. “I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!” She screamed at Henry, but she didn’t sound like she was certain she could anymore.

“Let go of the sword!” Henry commanded the zombie, allowing Jonathon to finally grab it. Jonathon quickly stood up before clutching at his chest wound. Henry didn’t know how much more useful he’d be in a fight but it’d be better than nothing.

Vive was trying to grab something inside of her leather armor. Henry didn’t want to give her the chance to get it.

Henry Decision:
1. Rush in
2. Wait for backup from the undead wolves and Jonathon

Henry leashed his last bolt, it arced brilliantly towards Vive. In response she simply swung at it, the etchings in her sword glowing with blue mana that had been stored inside of it. The bolt was cleaved in half, sending energies shrieking at the walls behind her. Her sword clattered to the floor, reduced to molten slag. her right hand was also badly burnt, and she was clutching at it. Her face contorted with pain

“FUCK” She screamed out, before turning towards the group. Her eyes flashed with fear, then a look of determination gripped her face as she began digging into pouches attached to the sides of her armor.

Then she grabbed out a pair of bomb runes, and she began to laugh madly.

She had been completely serious about killing Henry.

Henry tried to strike them with black mana the second he saw them, but it had no effect. She was blocking him out. She gleefully threw one at the undead wolves and a resounding detonation of shrapnel reduced them to pulp. The zombie woodsman also received some of the blow, falling over. Fortunately the thing had protected Jonathon from major harm, but the lad was now bleeding from a few new places.

They’d have to end this fast or they wouldn’t be living much longer.

Vive began to laugh harder now. But Henry could tell this was her last stand, she only had one more bomb rune left. She continued to laugh before clutching at the wound on her stomach. Her toughening spells had finally worn off it seemed. Jonathon slowly made his way over, one of his legs limping behind him.

This would be over soon, finally.

Henry, Johnny, and Vive were at a standstill. Neither was willing to make a move. However, the woodsman zombie had managed to get up, although its leg was torn to shit. Henry could just wait for the thing to come over and sic it on Vive… should be easy enough.

He’d tried blowing the rune up in Vive’s hand but she just barely managed to resist him.

“Now… of all times things are going right.” She said, smiling grimly. What was she trying to do?

Henry began to back towards the stairwell. He had made one small mistake. He’d forgotten about the remaining wolf. He saw it as it leapt onto Johnny and began biting at his helmet. Johnny managed to throw it off and tried to swing his sword at it but the wolf kept going.

“THIS IS FOR MY ARM YOU VILE THING.” Johnny yelled at the wolf, it’d been the one that’d taken his arm. And nowit wanted to take Johnny’s head.

Johnny swung at the wolf, sinking his blade deep into the thing. But the momentum of the beast carried the two of them out of the window and into the river, removing both from the fight.

Vive began to back up until she hit the wall, her breathing was ragged now, and blood was trickling down her body. She’d probably bleed out soon. Those wounds were nothing to sneeze at. A second later she composed herself, then kicked herself off the wall and began charging at Henry, holding the rune above her head.

“I’M COMING HOME YOLK!” She screamed, and the thing began to glow.

Henry reflexively held out his hand, trying to cast a bolt spell, but he was drained. All that emerged were sparks.

Henry decided to go for broke, and threw his sword at Vive.

Vive was now running on pure adrenaline, and blocked the sword with the bomb rune. It ricocheted out the window and into the river, letting out a clang. It might’ve just landed on Johnny’s helmet….

Vive surged forwards, realizing she would be able to have her revenge, not caring about her deteriorating body or the pain it was causing her.

Henry began to run, and then felt an intense pain from his leg. The thing had been hit by a piece of shrapnel from the first bomb rune. He hadn’t noticed during the fighting but it was hurting bad now. He managed to stay out of range of Vive but it looked like she was about to just lunge at him in a last desperate grab.

Jonathon finally managed to stagger his way into range, weakly swinging his sword at Vive, who blocked it and hammered him in the head with the rune, knocking him aside and continuing to chase Henry.

Henry went for the stairs, until realizing that the whole stairwell was covered by vines, it must’ve been due to that large spell Vive had cast earlier, that was what had shaken the building.

Vive began to laugh now. “I take one apple in the morning… from the great old tree…. Never known to heed any warning… Two in the afternoon. I take and take until its barren, until nothing is left, all the tree can do is cry now I’ve left it bereft…”

She had gone delirious, she had lost all sense and all reason, and the only thing left that was driving her forwards was her desire to kill.

Sort of like a living zombie.

Henry threw everything he had into one last attack on the bomb rune, all of the black mana and the remaining blue mana he had. He grimaced in steely resolve.

Vive screeched and then lunged at him. She wouldn’t be able to hold it off for too much longer.

Henry began to run away but slipped up on his own blood, shit… not here, damn it not here…

A moment later Jonathon swung his sword at Vive from seemingly out of nowhere, planting it deep into her side. He then kicked her, sending her back a few steps. She held the bomb rune out over her head in her right hand, her left hand clutching at her stomach for a moment. The rune started to pulse rapidly now, she was losing the test of mana.

“Yolk….” She said. Then the bomb rune detonated, sending Jonathon flying over Henry’s head and onto the ground. A stray piece of stone flew through the woodcutter zombies head, destroying its face and causing it to fumble around blindly.

The fight was over, but Jonathon didn’t seem to be moving.

Shit shit shit…

Henry quickly picked himself up and looked himself over, he would be alright, he’d taken a few nasty hits, namely the wolf bite and the shot to the leg, but honestly he was golden compared to literally everything else in the room. Vive’s upper torso had been turned to pulp, but Jonathon… he seemed to be in one piece at least.

Henry quickly grabbed out a needle and some thread from one of his pouches and got to work stitching up the wound in his leg. It always seemed weird to use his talents on living flesh, but he’d practiced with enough dead people to get good at it. He then using his red cloak as a bandage. Red was a necromancer’s favorite color for a reason, no staining.

He then crawled over to Jonathon, making sure to not put any pressure on his damaged leg. He could hear someone furiously slicing away at the vines in the stairwell, probably Johnny, it was about damned time.

Jonathon wasn’t doing too well, the lad had lost a good chunk of blood and looked to be in a great deal of pain. His cloak had been completely blown off and underneath was a combination of leather and lacquer covered iron armor. The armor had managed to reduce the damage to him by quite a bit. His head had been completely unscathed by complete luck, but he still had a few holes in him.

He looked at Henry with fear in his eyes.

“It… hurts…” He said, whimpering. “Is… she..” He said, coughing a bit. Didn’t sound like he had internal bleeding, least not in his lungs, so that was a plus. The boy had lost a good deal of blood, but nothing terrible. It also looked like his nose might be broken, probably from being hit in the face with a rune made of stone.

Henry looked from Jonathon, to the zombie, and back to Jonathon, trying to formulate his next words. He decided to be blunt. He snapped his fingers, and the zombie fell lifeless to the ground. Then he slapped Jonathon and began to remove his armor again. Finding that he had a few holes in him but the kid had really lucked out. Jonathon would be alright after his wounds were cleaned and sewn shut where the fuck was that sorta luck when he needed it?

“Look kid, you don’t deserve to die, and I mean that honestly, you fucked up, we all do alright? You can’t just beat yourself up over it.”

“I’m… I can’t live here anymore, I’m a monster… a vile thing…”

“Kid, I just defiled like five corpses and have been a necromancer most my life, alright, that ain’t gonna work on me, try again.” Henry said, grabbing a set of tweezers from one of his pouches and getting to work on clearing stones out of Jonathon’s wounds.

“I… I’d… I’d never be able to see anyone I cared about again, alright, I’d have to run… probably towards the wilds, at least as far as Bressa… I… I’d…I could hurt people again.”

“At least you can care about people, at least you have people who care about you kid, do you really think they’d want you dead just cause you have a curse?”

“Look, Jonathon… I know what you’re going through, and I know what it’s like.”

“NO YOU DON’T! HOW COULD YOU?” Jonathon screamed back, before going into another coughing fit. The boy needed rest, not this.

“I… when I was much younger…” Henry started. “I killed my parents. I know how you feel… it was a shitty situation… I had no choice.”

“What?” Jonathon asked his eyes widening.

Henry winced, he’d never told anyone this before, the only other person who even knew was Johnny. But the kid had already spilled his guts to him, least he could do was return the favor…

“What…” Jonathon said, in disbelief. “You… your…”

“Do I look like I’m lying.” Henry said, grabbing Jonathon by the shoulders and looking into his eyes. He saw the boy become slightly terrified. Henry was slightly terrified.

“Look, I can’t tell you any more than that, your life is already in enough danger.”

“If I get caught I’ll be hanged, I don’t thi-“

“If I tell you what I know you’ll get a LOT worse than hanged boy.” Henry said. “I’ve already said far too much… just… you need to run, I don’t know where.”

At that point Johnny knocked on the doorframe to the stairwell. He’d finally cleared the vines out.

“Sharing that bit of ancient history are we?” Johnny replied.

“Help me get him out of here.” Henry replied. “And not a fucking word, I’m in a horrible mood now.”

“Oh of course.” Johnny replied.

“No I’m fine…” Jonathon said, managing to get up with some difficulty. “I… I should heal a bit after tonight…”

“I have some words sir.” Johnny replied, looking at the two of them while moving over to where his left arm had been deposited and picking it back up.

“Can it wait?” Henry asked?

“For a moment, would you mind?” Johnny asked, placing his arm back into the socket and holding it up to Henry.

Henry loosed a small amount of black mana, the little he could muster. Johnny’s bones made a popping noise before sticking together once more. He tested their movement before nodding at Henry. The skeleton retrieved a bit of thread and a needle from his own pockets and set to work patching up his rags, a few minutes later the work was done. It’d need more repairs later but would hold for now.

“May I please speak?” Johnny asked.

“Fine” Henry said, “We need to move now though, no telling when curious people will come round.”

“We need to turn him in sir.” Johnny replied. “He’s a present danger to everyone for miles around and you know it.”

1. “Fuck off Johnny”
2. “I’m ordering you to help me get him into the woods so he can escape.”
3. “I’m not turning him in to the fucking church.”
4. “He just needs to get away from human inhabited areas and he’ll be fine, alright?”

“We’re not gonna do jack shit Johnny, he ain’t a horrible person and I’ll be damned if I let the church kill him.”

“So that’s what it comes down to.” Johnny said, the disappointment was palpable in his voice. “Unconditional forgiveness is just another path to damnation, boy. You think yourself merciful but what sort of life could he even lead”

“You have no fucking ground to stand on, old man.” Henry replied. “Life is life, besides, it’s the kids choice.”

“I….I….. I don’t know.” Jonathon finally said. “I … I should turn myself in shouldn’t I? I’m scared, I don’t want to die, but, I’ve sinned. Henry, I can’t live my life like this, some sort of mockery of it. I… I’m going to turn myself in, I’ve put off this for far too long now.” He said, sitting back down on the ground.

Johnny walked over, sitting down next to him. “I know it doesn’t mean much, but I can read you your rites. I don’t know if those inquisitorial bastards will even give you that courtesy.”

“Your… undead.” Jonathon said, “How could you?”

“I was a member of the church once, a paladin, many called me a hero. In the end I betrayed everything for a bit of selfishness. I wish I had the courage that you have now.” He said.

Henry really didn’t know where that was coming from, but he figured the old skeleton had made a deal he regretted. Johnny never really talked about his past, no more than he did anyways.

“Thank you.” Jonathon said after some time.

Henry strode out of the room and down the steps, he was infuriated. How dare the kid not accept his offer, why the fuck would you ever accept death over freedom, over living? Why had Johnny encouraged him. Jonathon would die for nothing now. Morals and the greater good weren’t worth all this…

Henry began swinging his short sword at vines and whatever else he could find, he didn’t know how long he did it for, but he only stopped after the blade broke off.

He slowly walked outside and found a tree stump to sit down on, not much left to do but wait for the inquisitors. They’d probably be arriving sooner or later.

Fucking hell, why couldn’t he do a god damned thing right?

All things considering we did pretty well. We killed both of the leaders, saved the town from whatever nuke they were going to set off. Pit the investigation on the right track.
Shame about the kid but if he wants to take that choice it is his to make. We shouldn't push people to think like we do, everyone has their own morals and principles. At least he didn't die because of us.
>>
Oh, and I think Johnny should leave before inquisitors come. Come to think of it Charles has no idea what we're doing. It will be a good excuse, he went to look after the kid while we wait for the authorities.

And is there a way to determine that a body had been resurrected? Anything we can do to make things less suspicious? Hopefully no one will ask questions about the woodcutter.
>>

once the magic leaves the body? No, there is no real way to tell, least for a basic raised undead.
>>
>>2471587
At least we can try to make sure that people know he died a hero. I think Rodgers would appreciate that, we could tell him about the circumstances.
>>
>>2471587
“I… I did alright? Right?” Henry asked nobody, anybody. “I killed both of their leaders… I stopped their plan… I’m a god damned hero aren’t I? I saved these idiots… but I can’t even save a single boy…”

Henry remembered something, that damned alter again…. Those helpless children again. What he’d had to do… for years. Throughout it all… all the screams, the cries of pain, the sobs of helplessness. They all formed HIS laugh. After a moment he forced the memories back down, then wiped tears from his face.

“Men can believe whatever they want, it doesn’t change the truth.” Nobody said.

Henry flipped around. terrified for a moment, but there was nobody there, just a mill, just a pathetic man sitting on a hunk of dead wood.

He turned back around to watch as a couple of horses rode into view, and slowly grew larger.

He had to save Charles, he had to save one god damned person, one child. He couldn’t live with himself if he kept failing like this. He had to prove … he had to prove him wrong.

Everyone has their own morals… Johnny said that once. The only ones he’d ever followed were what benefitted him, or his own survival. It’d kept him alive, more than alive, fairly comfortable, and he could do as he wished, nothing really held him down. Right?

Was it worth it?

His thoughts were interrupted by Johnny and Jonathon heading out to meet him, whatever they had done in the lumber mill had concluded.

“I want you to go back to Charles, keep him under guard.” Henry said flatly. “That’s an order.”

Johnny wordlessly nodded then started walking back towards the city.

Jonathon slowly sat on the ground. Henry wasn’t sure if he was going to break down or what. He grabbed the boy’s sword from him, Jonathon didn’t put up a fight. The Inquisitors would ask too many questions if he had a weapon when they arrived.

Henry wordlessly placed a hand on Jonathon’s shoulder.

“No matter what anyone tells you, you did good, you did real good… you were.. you are a hero kid.”

Jonathon just stared ahead as his death approached, a few tears falling from his cheeks.

Cassius and Grom had arrived.

Cassius leapt off his horse, running towards the two of them and grabbing a dagger from his leg.

“It’s over Cassius, stop. Hasn’t your bloodlust been sated?” Grom said, the man didn’t quite sound angry. But he didn’t sound happy either.

“It’s just another fucking werewolf, and even worse, a traitor. We shouldn’t even bother hanging him right?”

“Shut up Cassius.” Henry said. Giving the man a stare down. He could barely contain his hatred for all of this right now.

Cassius sighed before putting his knife away, many of them were coated in blood now, his clothing had blood on it as well. “What’s gotten into you all of a sudden? We’ve won!”

“I assume the raid was a success?” Henry asked.

“To our immediate knowledge, yes.” Grom replied, dismounting carefully. “I assume you’re turning yourself in Cathar?”

“Y-yes… this has gone on long enough.” Jonathon said, holding out his hands.

Grom drew a pair of silver inlaid handcuffs from his horse’s satchel. An instant later they had been placed on Jonathon’s hands.

“I want a rundown of whats happened here. Do not worry Henry I’m not upset, in fact I’m overjoyed, you’ve prevented a catastrophe. From the bottom of my heart, the order of Inquisitors owes you a debt.”

Henry just wished the man would shut up.

“Vive is dead, so are her wolves, do you even really need to know anything else?” Henry asked, standing up from his stump, he felt numb inside.

“I’m afraid we do, Henry.” Grom said, walking towards him. “Cherry Bridge has been completely destroyed. We need to figure out how, I assume it has something to do with the rune network they set up. Probably some sort of mass naturalize spell, but we’ve never seen anything like it.

“The spell circle is still set up inside. Vive, she killed a few people as well… she really did bad things to them.” Henry said. He knew they would buy it, the corpses had been pulped for the most part. That wouldn’t be what they would be focusing on regardless.

“We’re calling in a few investigators to review the aftermath, they’ll be arriving in a couple days, then we’ll be heading out.” Grom said.

“The runes need to be removed as soon as possible.” Henry said. “I think they could still be activated.

“Right now it’d be better for us to leave them in place, the rat trap you spoke of is probably still active, I’d rather we have professionals remove them than the city guard, far fewer casualties would result I feel.” Grom replied.

“I suppose so, it’s still dangerous.”

“It’s a risk we’re going to have to deal with for a day or two.” Grom replied, “I don’t like it either, but the world isn’t perfect.”

Jonathon hadn’t said anything, or even looked up during the entire exchange. Henry didn’t even know what the fuck was really going on anymore. The battle had been less scary than this.

“Look, Jonathon, I can’t say I would’ve made the same decisions you did, maybe that makes you a better person, whatever the case you deserved better.”

“No he doesn’t” Cassius replied. “No he fucking doesn’t. He’s scum, worse than any of the others even. He swore an oath, to the church, to himself, to everyone in that city. If I had my way I’d go over and drown him in that god damned river, before he went out and started eating people. He’s a weakling who should’ve hung himself the moment he found out he was one of them, the fact he didn’t says more about him than you ever could.”

Jonathon bit his lip until blood started coming out.

2. “Fuck you.”

“If it hadn’t been for his help I wouldn’t have known about Vive’s plan and the town would’ve been destroyed.” Henry replied, having to hold his rage down for a moment, he couldn’t afford to slip up here.

“If it hadn’t been for him, the town wouldn’t have been in danger. The rune network wouldn’t have been set up.” Cassius replied. “We would’ve had a far easier time here, Grom wouldn’t have had to suffer all of these… indignities, of a bunch of disrespectful idiots!”

“ENOUGH, This is going nowhere. Henry you can brief me later, probably tomorrow. Cassius, I want you to investigate the interior and check for any residual mana, then destroy that spell circle.” Grom replied, shooting a venomous glare at Cassius.

“You could at least say please.” Cassius replied, annoyed. He started making his way inside regardless.

“So what’s the plan?” Henry said.

“I’m going to wait here with the boy for the town guard, they’re should be arriving within minutes.”

“What about me?” Henry asked.

“You’re free to do as you please… you can watch the hanging if you desire, I think you deserve that much.” Grom said, beginning to whisper.

“I need some rest then, maybe get a healer.” Henry replied.

“I’ll make sure you’re seen to, you’ve done more than your fair share of all this so it’s the least I can do.” Grom replied. “Just going forwards, when we go to deal with the undead, leave it to me and Cassius, I do not wish to involve an outsider further.”

“I’m not complaining there… I don’t know how you can do… this.” Henry replied, motioning to Jonathon. The boy hadn’t moved at all, he was still biting his lip. Henry didn’t have the slightest clue for what to say to him.

“I take no pleasure in this, but it needs to be done.” Grom continued. Jonathon was still sitting on the ground, looking ahead at nothing. “We’ll be hanging him before moonrise of course, I know Cassius will protest but I refuse to give him a werewolf’s hanging. It would be cruel to give it to one so young.”

“What?” Henry asked. “I’m not familiar with the term.”

“It means we would tie a rope around his neck, stand him on a weakened platform, and when he turned his increased weight would break the platform beneath him… I have decided to hang him as a human, I don’t know whether the town guard will protest but I have authority here, for once.”

“I want to attend.” Henry said, quietly, barely a whisper. It felt weird with Jonathon nearby.

“Alright, we’ll be doing this at around five, I’d come a bit earlier.” Grom replied. “We’ll be hiding his face of course, it’ll be in central plaza.”

“You didn’t have to invite me then.” Henry said.

“I didn’t think you would’ve wanted to randomly stumble into it.” Grom replied.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The walk back to the inn was a bit surreal. Regardless it allowed Henry to really decompress. He could’ve fucking died, again. Twice in two days, he wished that was some sort of record. He didn’t even know why he did any of this, why the fuck.

He finally had time to think and he fucking hated it.

Arriving at the room he found Johnny and Charles. Johnny was checking over his rags, using string and thread to repair them.

“Come back to just leave again?” Charles asked. Before noticing Henry’s wounds. He quickly turned back to look at the map of New Haven he’d made.

“The man who prevented me from being turned into paste is going to be hanged tonight.” Henry said.

“Was he a bad person?” Charles asked, looking up at Henry.

“I… I don’t think so.” Henry said, sitting on the bed. “In fact I’d call him a god damned hero, but he’s a fucking idiot.”

“Why?” Charles asked.

“I offered to let him escape into the wilderness, I’d just say he snuck away during the battle we had. But he turned himself in, and is going to die for no good reason, because he just thought that was the right thing to do.”

“Was it the right thing to do?” Charles asked.

“I don’t fucking know.” Henry replied. “If I knew the answers to questions like that, I’d be a sage or a priest.”

“oh” Charles replied.

“Don’t let him shake your faith child.” Johnny interjected. “We all have duties to attend to, we all have sacrifices to make in life. Making them is what separates a hero from the average man.”

“I suppose you’d ask him to throw his life away to, for some stupid idea of a greater good?” Henry asked.

“We both know it’s different.” Johnny replied, before going back to his patching.

The three awkwardly sat in that room, Henry didn’t know for how long, but the silence was deafening.

“Charles, back when I talked to you in the healer’s abbey. I remember you wanted to talk about something, but I didn’t have time… now I do.” Henry said.

“I… oh.” Charles said. “I… I don’t… I didn’t mean.” He stammered.

“Look its fine then.”

“I wanted to thank the both of you.” Charles said. “You… you’ve shown me more kindness than I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“What?” Henry asked. “But you-“

“My parents hated me.” Charles said. “Regibald and a few of our servants were the only ones who ever cared about me. My parents… they just wanted me gone, I don’t know why. I… when this is all over, could we be friends, maybe? I know you do awful things… desecrate corpses… but you’re not a bad person.”

Neither was Jonathon, but he’d be on a rope soon.

“R-really?” Charles said, bouncing a little on his bed in excitement. “You aren’t mad at me, or just want to get rid of me?”

“Look, I can be a little pissy-“ Henry started before being interrupted by Johnny making a coughing noise.

“I can be VERY pissy.” Henry said, glaring at Johnny. “But I’m not some rich stuck up asshole that lives in a castle, alright? No offense to your brother of course.”

“Thanks Henry.” Charles said. “I.. why did you even help me, you had no reason to?”

“Because I’m not a bad person.” Henry replied, after a time. “Or at least I don’t want to be, anymore.”

Johnny stopped what he was doing and looked at Henry for a moment, then quickly turned back to his stitching.

“So Johnny, what’s the plan for the inquisitors?” Henry asked.

“As long as my disguise holds, we should be fine.” Johnny replied simply. “We’ll only be with them for a little bit longer, correct?”

“Nothing ever goes to plan and you know it.” Henry said, to resounding silence. “Fucking seriously? You have all damn night and you didn’t think up a plan.”

“I figured that was your job.” Johnny replied. “But fine. We’ll just be spending a tiny bit of time with them Henry, calm down.”
