/qst/ - Quests

You are a denizen of the Imperium of Man, the largest known political entity in the Milky Way galaxy. You currently live in Remanor, your homeworld, barely a man with 20 terran summers behind your back. You've lived a comfortable life in Remanor, as it is an Imperial World where basic commodities are readily available and self-sufficiency has been a key undertaking by the past few generations.

Sadly, not all is well in Remanor. In the Adrecharan deserts, above the Ruckor peninsula where you currently live, various towns and tribes have risen up against what they call Imperial oppression. This event ocurred barely a few days ago, and the people now fear conscription by the local PDF forces, which weren't ready for such a large scale rebellion.

You were sent to join a local militia by the PDF. There, you met various people who would end up forming your squad, including the gruff and strong PDF sergeant Urayyin; Mira Hawthorne, the huntress trained in CQC; Rogard Druns, a slum child used to survival in the meanest conditions; and Terry Fortran, a 50 year old veteran of an old war in the Pratorian Wastes with knowledge in Tech and Medicae. With them and six others, you fought a battle at an electric substation against the Adrecharani desert tribesmen and were victorious.

You were offered the position the position of Sergeant by the nobleman who led your platoon, Lieutenant Ratscher. You would have to replace Urayyin and asnwer to this man from there on. You know there was something off about it though, so you decided to refuse, for now.

Some rules:
>This quest will basically use a under 1d100, best of 3, system. Damage in battles is calculated according to degrees of success in aiming roll.
>It uses the Only War system for the most part, modified if fun/cool factor gains enough weight.
>The QM posting rate will be 1-2 per day most of the time. More if I feel like procrastinating (Now that we're in Easter week, I'll be able to procrastinate all the way til friday).
>Votes count until the next post arrives, no definite time set, but usually a bunch of hours will pass between one post and another. That's plenty of time to put in a vote. Usually, I will warn when 10-20 minutes remain to post.
>Why so slow? I don't want the QM curse to devour me, and I'd like to work on the finer details in this quest. I'm also learning the Only War system, so most posts will take a long while to prepare.
>If I don't post for a day, it's usually gonna come with a warning. If no warning comes, something came up and I couldn't find the time to post, I hope it won't happen though.
>Usually, the move that will make you not get hurt is the better move.
>Updated character sheet will be available. Someday, surely.

You look up to Ratscher. "Sir, I am so grateful for this glorious offer. But I am afraid that I can not accept it." Ratscher looks at you, surprised at first, frowning and angry then. Urayyin is also surprised, but his composure remains neutral and strict.

"What do you mean, you can not accept it?" Ratscher says, anger in his voice. "I am your superior, you will..." he takes his hands to his eyes, scratching them with his fingers in frustration.

"Sir." you continue. "Sergeant Urayyin is experienced, and I have barely recieved but a day of training on the inner workings of command, and I am sure that your time will be better spent on something other than teaching a militiaman how to lead a squad, sir. Sergeant Urayyin will have much more time to spare in that regard."

You see Ratscher's bloodshot eyes starting to calm down. You notice the bodyguard has a hand on his autogun's shoulder holster, looking at the both of you gravely. "Right, sure, you are right." says Ratscher. "Out of my sight, both of you."

Your relationship with Ratscher has regressed to Average.

You salute and depart from the third floor of the electric substation. As you reach the second floor. Urayyin stops you. "Why did you refuse?" he asks, you notice that he seems worried and angry now, different from his steel composure beforehand.

"It's what I really felt, sarge. I'm not ready to become a sergeant so soon, I need training." You lean in to whisper. "Plus, that Ratscher wasn't doing it for my benefit, he was doing it for himself. He wants the good rep of having trained a soldier like me, and I'm sure you know this."

Urayyin sighs. "Listen, corporal." he says. "Angering a lieutenant, angering a noble in general, is not in your best interests. Who cares what I think? I would've been sent back to my squad and wouldn't have to deal with him any further. You would've been promoted to sergeant and gotten honours after this idiotic rebellion was done with."

He pauses, trying to gather his thoughts. "I did enjoy watching his little bout of anger though. Him and I have had bad runs in the past. I am a self-made man, he's a pompous child of a noble who was given everything. He knows nothing of the lives we lead. But still, you have to lick his boots a bit, use the sudden jumps in power he could give you, do not make the same mistakes that I did, corporal." You notice that Urayyin's eyes turn sad, very sad, as he remembers something.

"In a way, I am happy that you had enough principles to not simply take his offer like that. I wasn't sure what to think of you, but I really appreciated that move, not sure if you did it for me, for yourself, or for the squad in general, but it speaks leagues about the kind of man you are, cautious, caring. And you're not an easy kind to find."
>>
>>2441845
He puts his hand to your shoulder. "I will teach you how to be a good sergeant, instead of how to be a good boot-licker." He winks and heads down the flight of stairs. You follow, feeling reassured about your decision. Urayyin may not be a nobleman with a thousand contacts in the PDF or the Imperial Guard, but he's a loyal, strong man who will fight with you til your last breath. And you're glad you sticked with soldier like that.

Your relationship with Urayyin increased to Great.

You now have some free time, your platoon has recieved reports that the substation should be safe for a while, and that you will return to camp in around two to three hours. You can,

>Go speak with Mira. She was wounded and you still haven't checked up on her.
>Go speak with Rogard. He fought well in the battle and you want to see how he's doing.
>Go speak with Terry Fortran. He's done a lot of work to patch everyone up, you wonder how he's doing after all that.
>Check on stealth and runner squads, see how they're doing after the battle.
>Return to Ratscher, see if you can work up a deal with him which could please you, him, and Urayyin all the same. (Write in what kind of deal you want to work out with him.)

>>>Go speak with Terry Fortran. He's done a lot of work to patch everyone up, you wonder how he's doing after all that.
Let's see how ol' Fortran is doing.
>>
>>2441848
You think of Terry Fortran. The old man singlehandedly took care of your entire squad's wounds after the battle, even with a bullet wound right on his torso. You head out from the station and approach your squad. Everyone seems merry, talking and making jokes, Urayyin is looking out to the battlefield, scanning for enemy presence. You see Terry finishing up some touches to Alekt's bandage.

"How's he doing?" you ask. Fortran looks at you for a second then heads back to work. Alekt seems focused looking at the ground, holding in some pain.

"He's tough, that's for sure. His eye will recover but a bit of meat from his head will be missing. Far as I could see, it'll give him a cool scar. Right Alekt?"

"Whatever you say, just tie the damn bandage already." Alekt says, clenching his fists to lessen the pain.

Fortran laughs and clips the bandage. As far as you can see, it's a well-put bandage. Not that you're a medicus or anything, but you'd bet it is, done as it was by Fortran.

The old man gets up. "Anything you wanted, corporal?"

"I was just checking on you. You've done much for us today, more people would've died if not for your presence. How are you doing?"

Fortran smiles slyly. "Well, as well as one can do, being in the midst of a war and having to remove bullets from people in inordinate amounts of pain. Thank you for worrying about me, but I'm sure there's other people who'd need to talk to someone after what's happened, I've seen this a hundred times already back in you-know-where."

Pratoria. You remember, this old man has seen much in the Pratorian rebellion. This is probably small fry stuff to him but you're glad to see that he's fine nonetheless. "Need any assistance with the wounded?"

"I'll go talk to the other medics in the rest of the squads, but further medical assistance will need actual installations from which we can work, back at camp." he says, trying to wash off the dry blood from his hands in a bucket of water.

Would you like to ask anything else?
>Write in

Otherwise, you can,
>Go speak with Mira. She was wounded and you still haven't checked up on her.

So Rogard and Mira first. We'll see what we do afterwards.
>>
>>2442429
You wave Fortran goodbye and look around your position. You see Mira, resting outside the trenches behind a small stone wall. She's looking up to the sky, thinking and wondering.

You get close to her and sit besides her for a bit, she looks at you, then back up. "Something in your mind, corporal?"

"Just wondering how you were doing." You tell her. "It was our first battle after all."

She sighs. "It doesn't feel too right, killing someone, even if they were our enemies and wanted to do the same to us." she pauses for a bit and looks at you. "You know, it's like, watching a human who was just, doing something, shooting a gun, charging at you, preparing those stubbers, anything. And suddenly they slump over, dead and cold, forever. It's just..." she closes her eyes and looks up again. "...I don't know. At least I knew that I was protecting you guys."

You feel sad for her. You had killed one person or two during the two years you had as a cop. You remember that exact feeling. The feeling of 'Maybe if we had met under other circumstances...' It was a useless feeling, what's done is done. There is nothing you can do about it.

You,
>Tell her that you understand how she feels, and that she must steel herself for what is to come. Our squad might not always be together.
>Tell her that you understand how she feels, and that you'll be there for her through and through. You're in this together.
>Tell her that she can't allow moments of weakness like this to settle in, she will hurt the squad if she does. War is war.
>Something else? Write in.

>Tell her that she can't allow moments of weakness like this to settle in, she will hurt the squad if she does. War is war, we should be glad our first battle is so easy, I’ve heard some of the things returning Imperial guard said, and battles usually does not leave place for such doubt.

Comforting her is tempting, but it is honestly doing here a disservice. Also waiting for approval about the Imperial guards thing.

Oh sorry, I hadn't read your post right. You've met Imperial Guard, but they never talked about what happened to them during the campaigns, it's forbidden knowledge. But you can simply mention the Pratorian Wastes if you want to go for the war is war thing.

You sit and ponder, wondering what exactly you could tell her that would make her feel better. You decide to simply tell her the truth.

"Listen, Mira. I understand how you feel, I've taken lives already myself, both when I was an enforcer, and now in this battle. It doesn't feel right, but it's what we must do in the name of the God-Emperor and to bring peace to our land." You look for a reaction in her, but she doesn't seem convinced.

"I just want you to know that I am here for you, and I will continue being here for you til this war ends. And so will the rest of the squad." You tell her, you can see her react after that, tears welling up in her eyes. You're honestly feeling real bad for her. Poor lass probably didn't want any of this, what is she? Like 18 years old? She's barely a woman, and she's already killed another person.

"Corporal, I..." she sighs, her voice sounds somewhat broken, trying to hold in the tears. "Thank you." She sits up, bending her knees and embracing them with her arms. "I wish I could be as strong as you, corporal." She says, before breaking and letting the tears flow.

You,
>Embrace her and comfort her.
>tell her "We will train together to make it so, back at camp." as you put a hand on her shoulder, then head off to Rogard, letting her ponder by herself.
>Something else or expand upon an option? Write in.

Falling to the Chaos Gods is not that simple in my view of 40k. Only when the truest despair shows do the dark forces of Chaos tempt.
>>
>>2442766
>Embrace her and comfort her.
>>
>>2442803
Do not let such heretical notions plague your mind. Instead, let us kick ass in the name of Big E on his golden throne!
>>
>>2442766

If you do not find the Strength in yourself, than look to the Emperor, for he is our guiding light, the protector of mankind who give us strength when we are weak, who give us salvation when all is lost, and as we falter we must remember that he is always here, looking at us defender of Humanity with Pride and love, believing in Humanity strength to overcome any and all obstacle.

.... I am bad at this.

>>2442816

It is actually even easier than this, since you don’t even need to be willing to fall to Chaos. You just need to be a bit too obssessed with something, like a scholar obssessed with a problem, and then bam one day you find the answer on your desk... except it came from Chaos and the moment you touch it you are pretty much done.
Chaos prey on weakened mind, they first poison you with empty promise, and slowly corrupt you afterward.
You don’t really need to be in absolute despair for Chaos to snatch you. It would not be such a problem otherwise.
You can also get corrupted by using corrupted equipment

...and I am rambling.
>>
>>2442893
>Writein
I could use something like that

>About Corruption
I understand that corruption in W40k is actually quite easy, which is why it has such a presence in the universe and in society at large. I don't want to do it like that though because it'd be... well, too grimdark for my taste. As you've seen, some characters have said things that could get them killed in an instant in regular 40k. I want to strike a middle balance between grimdark and noblebright because that's how I think humanity realistically do.
>>
Anyway. Seems like comforting her first then heading out to see Rogard wins. Also a bit of Emperor praising and humanity fuck yeah sprinkled in.
>>
>>2442931
You inch closer towards her and embrace her. The position is kind of awkward, but she seems to enjoy it and one of her hands grips your arm, seeking comfort. After around half a minute, she recovers and looks at you in the eyes. Your faces are uncomfortably close, or comfortably, if you were to ask some mates back at the station.

As she sniffes her last tears, you decide to give her a last comforting phrase. "We will train together to make it so, back at camp. Remember that we are proud denizens of the Imperium, the God-Emperor watches over us, and our species is the strongest and most adaptable in the galaxy. We are strong, for we are human."

She nods, wiping off the tears from her face. You let go of the embrace and put a hand on her shoulder. "Be strong, we all must be, for ourselves and for each other." You say before heading off.

You see stares from some in your squad, mostly militia who you do not remember the name of. They're smiling and even laughing, you wave them off and tell them to get back to work. They laugh again and say "What work?", Urayyin stops gazing at the battlefield and flings an eagle's stare at them. The lot of them scurry off to help Fortran, or anyone really, in whatever they need. You nod to Urayyin, who smiles at you and continues his observation.

Close to Urayyin, you find Rogard Druns, watching over the prisoners with autogun in hand. It seems that three of the prisoners are sleeping soundly, while another two are being given first aid by Fortran.

"Sarge told Fortran to patch them up." Rogard says nonchalantly, not lifting his eyes from them to greet you. "Else they'll just bleed to death on the way back to camp. The seem cooperative, what you told 'em must've hit them deep."

You nod. "I'm glad it did, the less people die, the better."

Rogard chuckles, "Spoken like a true soldier, corporal.", you laugh with him for a second, bordeom is really settling in if you laugh about things like this.

"I've come to see you Rogard, how do you do after the battle?"

"I'm doing well, poor girl Mira wasn't. She might be a huntress, but I'd wager she was sheltered outside of that and took too much pride in it. Then she saw that her pride would not help in battle." he spits on the ground. "Killing nature's little creatures ain't the same as killing people."

You don't say anything, silence working as an approval of its own. "Are you alright, Rogard?"

He nods. "This isn't so different from slum wars, just way more people and guns. It feels a bit worse though, since the people on the other side might just have a better life to go back to." now he gives out a sigh. "At least in the slum wars you know most of the bastards on the other side are either junkies or cruel cunts."

You nod, you know what the slums are like, and that Rogard could come out of them looking so healthy is a testament of his strength of mind and body. He continues his tirade.
>>
>>2443078
"You know, even though we're not always killing bad people, at least we're killing for a cause. For peace in our home, for the God-Emperor, for our pay, even for the respect of others. It's better than fighting in the slums, where all you do is fight to live another day."

>I respect you, Rogard. You are third most able man in this squad. I'm sure they'll pick you up.

You look at Rogard, he's young but his face and his scars say he's seen more than most men older than him have seen. It's good that he has a place that he might call home that's better than the lower parts of town.

"You know Rogard, I respect you. You're the most able man in this squad. Will you join the PDF? They'll pick you up for sure."

Rogard smiles, you think it's the first truly sincere smile you've seen from him. "Yeah, I'm thinking about joining up. Asking to be in Urayyin's unit for sure, you've not seen him swinging his sword during his duel, it's like he was dancing with it." Rogard loses himself remembering the scene. You feel like he's found his calling.

Rogard then looks at you with a devious smile. "You were also pretty good out there, corporal. You swung your knife like it was part of you, pure CQC. They teach that to small town cops?"

You shake your head. "Nope, not really. Mira taught me the other night."

He looks at you surprised. "So you didn't shag?"

You're taken aback by the question. "What? No! We trained CQC under the rain."

"Huh." he says with a laugh. "That's romantic." he hits you with his elbow, as a show of trust. "You're gonna tell me you're not into her, I've seen that hug, and with a night of training under your belt, fighting as comrades in a war. You're gonna tell me you're not into her? She'd be a beast in bed."

You feel like Rogard's just bringing this up in order to keep the war and battling out of your heads, it does feel nice to think about something other than how to survive. But you're pretty sure he's also got a morbid curiosity about it as well.

Still, she's dependable and some of her folks are retired vets, so it might work out in the end, if anything were to happen."

Rogard nods. "You've got everything thought out, corporal. I admire you for that." you see him thinking, holstering his autogun and crossing his arms. "Imperial Guard, huh? I've also thought about that, but I'm kind of spooked about heading off world. As far as I've been told, without knowing someone high in the PDF ranks, experience in the Guard is the only way to become something other than a run of the mill private in the PDF."

You interrupt Rogard after he finishes that last sentence. "Come now, Rogard. We still got a war to survive. You know, if we do get out of this alive, I was thinking of bringing you and the squad to my family's ranch, make a good old barbeque and celebrate with beer and steaks."

Rogard's eyes suddenly shine as he hears the words steaks and beer. "You can afford that?"

"I'll find a way to pay my parents back." you wink at him. "We're gonna go through some tough shit, I'm sure my parents won't mind giving us some good meat after we come back in one piece."

"Damn. Thanks Bolter, I'll gladly take up your offer. Say, if you join the Guard or the PDF, how about we go at it together? I think we'd make a good team."

Relationship with Rogard has increased from Good to Great.

Only War calls these type of planets imperial worlds but the lexicanum says they're gamma type "Civilized Worlds". Not an agri-world, it's more of a world like our own but Warhammer style.

Forgot trip

"I'd be glad to, better than going at it alone for sure."

"Good to know, corporal."

You tap Rogard on the back and say your goodbyes. You're glad to know that you'll have someone you trust taking the big step with you.

The hours passed by, the transport trucks arrived and everything of value was put into the truck. Some civilians arrived along with the truck, cleaning purposes, apparently. You and your boys only bothered to bury some of the corpses, mostly the ones in the trenches that fought in melee with you. You felt rather bad when you saw the lifeless corpse of the man whose throat you punctured again, but you shrugged off the feelings as fast as you could.

You spent around an hour or two carrying wounded to the trucks, the prisoners, the stubber, and other materiel such as sandbags. Overall, the substation was stripped clean except for the trenches.

The voyage home passed by quickly exhaustion had set in for most of the squad and many fell asleep in the trip. When you arrived, the wounded were carried off to the small hospital tents in the center of camp. Fortran headed off with them, saying they'd need his help.

You were given a few hours to settle in your tents again, leaving most of your stuff there. Patrols were assigned, it wouldn't be your turn 'til around 10 PM. You had some free time which you spent chatting with Rogard about your fighting styles, you were too tired to fight each other. It was somewhat lonely in the tent, Mira was recieving medical care and Fortran was busy tending the wounded.

Eventually, right before dinner time, Fortran got back to the tent, he seemed extremely tired. He barely said hello and slumped into his bed for quick nap.

You and Rogard left the tent, Rogard wanted to have a smoke in the outskirts of the camp. The day was getting a bit chilly, the usual for Fall season. When you returned, Fortran seemed somewhat rested and wanted to speak with you.

"Corporal. Most of the wounded from our squad aren't in bad spots. The worst off are Urayyin, the slash he recieved in his arm was worse than we imagined, 3 days rest at the very least, and Mira, she started having a fever as we came back to camp. Thankfully, we were able to stabilize her, but she'll need a full week's rest and a few days more to be sure. The rest will be well after a day or two of rest." You see him stretch as he finishes, a large yawn coming out of his mouth. "Man, I'm starving, let's go have our dinner."

You head off to the canteen, wondering if Mira will be alright. You do know at least one person from runner squad is dead, the rest were lightly wounded. So she's by far the worst off of all the wounded. Maybe you should've told her to lay down after she got wounded the first time? You shake your head, what's done is done.

There's a lot of merriment during dinner, celebration of a well-fought battle and hard-earned victory. You notice that none of the sergeants are there with you, and Mira's the only one missing. Around the end of dinner, Fortran beckons you over. "I forgot to tell you, corporal. But sergeant Urayyin told me to have you bring him dinner personally."

You're somewhat bothered by this, the rest of the men are going to have a small party around a campfire before heading off to pray to the God-Emperor and the machine spirits. You'll try to do this fast.

You pick up the sergeant's dinner, somewhat more lavish than yours, then again, it's not hard to be more lavish than a bit of meat with mashed potatoes. As you arrive to the tent, you see Urayyin on a bed, his back to the bed's support, pondering as he looks at his heavily bandaged arm. In front of him is Mira who is sleeping soundly.

Urayyin beckons you to him in silence with a wave of his hand. He talks in whispers. "She sleeps soundly, a welcome boon, as all she did was sweat and breathe loudly up until now. Her fever is not doing her good."

You look over at Mira, she's sleeping on her side, her breathing stable. "Fortran told me she'd be alright."

Urayyin smiles, taking off a bit of beer from his beard. "She will be, after a week or two. Don't worry about her, be glad that the medics in this platoon are competent."

You nod, not all squads can say they've got people like Fortran. Urayyin continues, "Anyway, I've not called you here to chitchat. Ratscher ordered me to send someone in my stead to the officer meeting. You're going."

"Do you think Ratscher will want to see me?"

"Not any less than he'd want to see me, boy." Urayyin says gravely. "You're still his favorite from the entire platoon. Even though you somewhat shamed him earlier, he still wants to use you to gain rep. And he knows that I won't use you for such things, I've told him that much in the ride to camp." Urayyin says amidst his eating.

You,
>Salute and agree. You will face the cadre of command of the platoon.
>Salute but refuse. Ratscher is not someone you want to trifle with. You offer to send someone else, who?

Emperors blessing that you recover stronger than ever. Same to Mira.

I hope Ratscher mellows out in time. We're just an honest guy trying to do what we think is right. Maybr in time we can talk one to one with the lieutenant as men. Maybr he would be gracious enough to tell us why he wants to move up so bad and how?

Decided to do something a bit special for the prompt in this one.

------------------

You salute Urayyin. "Alright then sir, I'll face Ratscher."

Urayyin chuckles. "Come now, Ratscher is not your enemy, not yet at least. Simply measure your words and say things that will please him. Off you go."

You relax your pose and give him the Emperor's blessings, wishing him a speedy recovery and to pass on the same wishes to Mira when she wakes up. He simply nods while continuing his dinner, waving you away with his good hand.

You head out of the hospital's tent and traverse the camp until you reach the officer's tent. You hear many cheers and even song coming from a the light of the campfire, a bit irritating to think that they're having fun all together and you have to spend time with a stuck up noble, a bald zealot, and an old sadistic looking woman. You sigh, it could be worse.

As you approach the officer's tent, you see Ratscher's bodyguard and the two soldiers who care for the heavy stubber, they wave a greeting and one of them opens up the tent to let you pass, you promptly do so. As you enter, you see Lieutenant Ratscher, sergeant Otilio and sergeant Bantree gathered around a map of the substation and its surroundings.

Ratscher greets you first. "Hail, corporal Armstrong. I take it Urayyin has sent you?"

You salute. "Yes sir!"

"At ease, please, take a place with the rest of my sergeants, for the duration of this meeting, you will be at their level as Urayyin's representant."

You take your place by them, they're sitting in the table's front, while Ratscher is sitting behind it.

"I've already asked Otilio and Bantree about theirs, now I will ask about yours. How do you think that your squad fared in battle?" All eyes are suddenly on you, it's certainly a pressure, as if they were banding against you somehow.

"Well,
>Write in."
>>
>>2445578
Fared as well as i could have hoped. these men and women were living their normal lives not even a week ago, but even so, even with the most minimal training, they faced the God-Emperors enemies and prevailed. i couldnt have asked for more.
>>
>>2445607
This.
>>
>>2445578
"Well, they were doin' the Emperor's work, sir. They listened to orders, took aim and took care of the enemy soldiers and when the bastards climbed in the trench, they fought bravely and won. We didn't suffer much and I'm not sure if it was luck or skill but the lads and lasses did their job and the Emperor guided them to safety."
>>
>>2445578
They've done astoundingly considering that not even a week ago they were all civilians with little to no military experience. Though they have obvious deficiencies, as would be expected, the battle has highlighted these and this will allow us to focus on each individual's and each Squad as a whole's downfalls in the coming days.
>>
>>2445578
I may be a bit biased, but I believed we did fairly well given the minimum training we received before hand.
The number of casualties and injuries we received is very unfortunate, but I believed we hurt them more than they us. So that's something. did we get the enemy Stubber?
>>
>>2445578
Also everyone played to each other's strengths and weaknesses, which might have factored into our great success.
>>
>>2445578
"Fared as well as we could've hoped sir. We were civilians not even a week ago, yet they listened to orders, took aim, and fought bravely in the name of the Emperor. We've noticed certain deficiencies, but we're sure to train them into shape for the rest of the campaign. Thankfully, we were able to hurt the enemy more than they hurt us as we played to each other's strength and weaknesses and compensated our squad's lack of field training."

Ratscher listens intently, as does Otilio, Bantree seems to be looking at the map, not paying much attention. Ratscher speaks up. "You are right, Armstrong. For a militia, you have outdone yourselves. Though around half of the enemy escaped and survived, carrying off their stubber gun with them. But I'd say we couldn't have asked for more."

Ratscher then points to the map, sliding his gloved hand towards the fields in front of the electric substation. "The other two platoons in the company are digging trenches and settling in this areas as to hold off enemy incursions. As far as we know, these are unlikely as they are being beaten back. Their forces too are militias in the end, the few PDF who joined them are holed up in the forts in the west of the Adrecharan deserts."

You feel great relief, but avoid giving out a sigh, it would be unprofessional. Seems like your men will be able to rest. Ratscher continues. "We will have around a week to rest, see which of your men will be capable of combat by then and try to beat some training into them, no more quick one day courses, I want full on training that will last them the whole of the campaign."

The three of you salute. "Yes sir!" You echo together. Ratscher then finishes off his speech, "Leave the tent, all except Bolter Armstrong." Otilio and Bantree relax from their salute and head out.

Ratscher looks at you, you notice it's the first time since you met him that you are alone together. Though you met him a day ago, it still feels like an eternity.

"Still not willing to take up the post of sergeant? We are alone here, Urayyin will not be able to pressure you." Ratscher seems to have switched to a calmer, less strict demeanour now that you two are alone, taking a sit on a comfy looking wooden chair and crossing his fingers infront of him.

"Please excuse me sir. But I do not understand your insistence on making me a sergeant, what qualifications do I have?"

Ratscher shakes his head and gets up again, frustrated. He starts pacing around the room with his hands to his back. "It's not about qualifications, corporal. This is a militia squad, not a Remanorean Imperial Dragoons squad."

He pauses for a bit and looks up, then to you. "This is about potential. You are physically fit, strong of mind, possibly a good leader of men. Sergeant Urayyin is a washed out NCO from the Adrecharani deserts, after his people's rebellion he and his men will fall from grace in the PDF and the planet in general."

Ratscher shakes his head, he seems sad, you don't know if he's faking it or not. "You know, I may have had problems with Urayyin, but it's not personal. His pride gets the better of him, if you've not seen it yet, you will see it one day."

He sighs, this topic is exasperating for him. "You have the potential to be a strong squad leader, and I can help you attain that potential. Accept my offer. Let Urayyin get back to his squad and all of us will be happy."

>"Sir, I respect your offer, I truly do. But I could tell back at the substation that you have second intentions, and unless you come clean with me I will continue to refuse, come what may."
>"I accept your offer sir. But only if you could help Urayyin not fall from grace after this war."
>"I must insist on my refusal, sir. I respect Urayyin and he has done much for us, we can't simply let him go if he does not wish to after he fought with us in battle."

>Something else? Write in. Whatever you write in can be added on top of a previous option, or can be a new option all on its own.

"Sir, I wish to accept the promotion to sergeant one day very soon, but only when I believe I am better trained and experienced for the task. I have only a days training and experience and I did not refuse out of any misguided loyalty to Urayyin, Urayyin is someone that I respect and appreciate, and would hate to see fall from grace, but nothing else. I simply wish to be ready and competent for the rank that could determine the fate and lives of myself and my squad."

Ratscher looks down as he paces behind the table, somehow, you can tell there is a sincere understanding imprinted on his visage. "You may be right, corporal. I might be rushing this." He sits down, digging his face into his hands, then continuing.

"You see, I must demonstrate my capabilities as a commander. Many in my family are demanding this of me. I've gotten a victory today, which is already something, but I feel like the key to proving my worth is in finding good talent. This rebellion means nothing, it will be crushed eventually, and crushing militia is nothing when compared to actually bringing in good men to the PDF or the Guard."

You nod, you didn't think your small speech would get such an intense reaction from him, but there it is. "Lieutenant sir, I can not say that I understand the pressure you are undergoing right now, but please understand mine and sergeant Urayyin's. I already have four lives under my care and one of them is sitting feverish in a hospital after recieving two bullet wounds. I was a low tier policeman not even a week ago. And suddenly three people depend on me and obey every word I say.

Urayyin has 9 people under him, he had to train them to fight, he had to lead them in battle, he nearly died with us as he fought on the enemy leader. Could I have faced that enemy lieutenant who was so proficient in swordplay? I doubt it very much. I know that you and him have bad blood, but you must go beyond such trivialities and understand his value to the platoon, to my squad, and to you. He is a valiant and brave swordsman, a perfect fit for leadership. If we die in the next battle, your investment on me will return no benefits, if Urayyin is with us, the likelihood of me or my squad dying is much lower. The more victories we rack up, the more I prove myself in battle under the sergeant, the more worth you will find in presenting me to the PDF or the Imperial Guard."
>>
>>2446280
Ratscher is somewhat overwhelmed by your words, he's not crying or anything, but you can see that he's holding something in. "I..." he tries to regain his composure, succesfully. "Corporal, I've underestimated you. My judgement was blinded by my hunger for glory and reputation. I believe I will have to talk extensively with sergeant Urayyin, I will also make sure that the young girl in the hospital will be well taken care of. I hope to better analyze the situations I encounter myself in in the future, the way you do." You can tell that saying 'the way you do' stung him more than you could imagine. This was not easy for him to do, nor is it something he'd do with anyone he'd just met.

He extends his hand to you, and you take it, giving a firm handshake. "I pardon your little rebellious speech. Consider me pleased with your aptitudes and strengths. Return to your post, if I were to need of your counsel, I would call you again."

You salute, and get ready to head out from the tent, happy with your exchange with this nobleman. His voice stops you before you leave. "Oh and... corporal. You have my outmost gratitude. I... owe you."

Relationship with Ratscher has increased from Average to Good.

You,
>Salute again and head out of the tent silently.

"Thank you, sir. You are welcome to come and participate to a barbeque I will be holding with my family and squad after all is said and done." you say, giving him a friendly salute before leaving. He nods. "I will think about it, I believe my family has a few lands over there."

As you leave the tent, you honestly thing things could not have gone better, as if you were some sort of mediator. You weren't trained for this kind of stuff, though you probably should have considering your line of work. Oh well, shoot first, ask questions later.

As you head out into the night, you notice that the revelry from before is dying down. You head over to the light of the campfire and see people talking from all squads, lots already went off to pray or sleep. The rest are simply enjoying what remains of the evening before getting back to work tomorrow.

You sit on a log where Rogard Druns is looking at the fire. "Hey Rogard. My pas told me that if you look at the fire's light too much, you'll go blind."

Rogard smirks. "Your pas may be right, if these black spots in my eyes would tell us anything." he scratches his eyes then looks at you. "Where'd you go? Fortran already went to sleep."

"Urayyin had a special task for me: deal with an officer reunion."

"Shit. You're rising through the ranks, 'sergeant' Armstrong.", Rogard says sarcastically.

You respond with a laugh, wondering how badly things would've gone if you had fucked up your response to Ratscher. Seems like luck sometimes takes your side.

You decide to stay silent about what you've gone through with Ratscher today. Honestly, all you feel like doing is just enjoying some downtime after all the things you had to go through. You, Rogard, and the five other militia still with you all share some stories about their lives up until now. A lumberjack, a farmer, a clerk... All kinds of people here, none of them soldier, you are what comes closest, unless you take Rogard into account with his slum wars.

Eventually, fatigue and drowsiness settles into most of the men and yourself. The militias leave, and you and Rogard decide to do the same, heading back to the tent where you see Fortran sleeping soundly. You change up your clothes and head off to sleep. The night passes by uneventfully.

The next day, Ratscher announces that the next week will be spent making sure that the wounded recover and the healthy train themselves until they can train no more. Urayyin was given leave from the hospital to train if he wished to, but so long as the training wasn't physical. Mira was still stuck there, Ratscher ensured that she would recieve some classes on whatever topic she wished while she was out of commission, apparently she chose tech.

You can do only two of these trainings during this week:
>Urayyin has offered to give you further extensive classes on command, possibly turning the skill into permanently Known.
>Urayyin has offered to teach you how to be better aware of your surroundings and spot ambushes. Raising the Awareness skill to temporarily Known.
>Rogard has offered to teach you more about dodging, possibly turning the skill into permanently Known.
>Ratscher has offered to teach you how to scrutinize someone, see their hidden intentions or tell if they're lying. Raising your Scrutiny skill to temporarily Known.
>Ratscher has offered to teach you how to sway people with words, make them come to see your opinion in an easier way. Raising your Charm skill to temporarily Known.

Hey lads, as I mentioned before I'm going to a con this weekend, so I won't be able to post until monday at the very least. I might post an update tonight, depends on how tired I am. A tired QM does not write quality posts so I'd rather not write at all if I'm not feeling it.

Anyhow, considering the thread will probably die in the next few days, I'm leaving a twitter here so you guys can see when I'll be back:
https://twitter.com/GuardQM

I'm also archiving the thread in suptg, same tags as the first one:

Thank you for your support and for reading my content lads, see you in a few days.

Quest master has returned. Seems turning our skills into permanently known has won by itself.
>>
>>2464588
During the week, you spend most of your time with Urayyin and Rogard, training as hard as you can for your next battle. Urayyin teaches you the mannerisms and knowledge that a good leader of men must have while Rogard shows you the correct motions to dodge blows from all kinds of weapons, he warns you to be wary of enemies with larger melee weapons, as they will usually have an advantage due to the raw size of it.

Command Skill has become permanently Known!
Dodge Skill has become permanently Known!

Outside of that, the rest of your time is spent socializing with your squad, and visiting Mira in the hospital, she tells you of what she learns thanks to her tutor, which is apparently Otilio. Who'd have told you that a priest dabbled with Tech that much? As far as you know, she has gained some knowledge of the machine spirits and their wants and needs, and how they allow us to use them.

It seems most of them men are getting along rather well, the hype from your victory is dying down as the week passes and monotony begins to set in, thankfully, most squaddies recovered from their wounds completely, even Mira, though she now has a nasty scar on her shoulder.

At the end of the eighth day, Ratscher announces that our company will be in charge of taking and holding a small town in the edges between the Ruckori plains and the Adrecharani desert. The town is of Adrecharani construct and is an important position for spotting enemy movement within the desert.

Due to a lack of manpower, the enemy has a measly garrison which is probably holding out in the houses within the village. Our platoon will be in charge of sweeping into the village and taking it, while the other two will scour the surrounding area and fortify strategic positions to defend the village if need be.

Urayyin tells you that even if the enemy are few, if skilled or lucky enough they could do much damage. "Remain on your toes, and keep an eye on your comrades." he tells you.

You,

Do they think the townies might give us some trouble, or would be glad to be rid of these guys?
What time of day should we start? Middle of the night? Evening? Noon?

>Do they think the townies might give us some trouble, or would be glad to be rid of these guys?
As far as we know, the townies have left the town entirely, either heading further into the desert as traitors or retreating to the Ruckor peninsula in order to be in Imperial territory.

>What time of day should we start? Middle of the night? Evening? Noon?
The operation will start early in the morning, still under the cover of the night. A surprise attack will begin when dawn breaks.

Update will be coming out later today.

By the next day, your platoon arrives to the outskirts of the village by truck. You calculate that you could reach it if you ran for five or six minutes, you imagine the running squad could reach in three or four.

Urayyin comes to relay orders, we are to sneak to the village as far as we can, if we are detected, we must initiate combat, otherwise we have to ambush the enemy. The objective is to keep the enemy pinned and distract them from the actions of runner and stealth squads.

Runner squad is to leg it to a flank as soon as battle starts, they will then attempt to reach around and take the enemy by surprise from their flank or rear. Stealth squad will attempt to move into the village while the battle rages on and take out your foes from the inside.

Rogard approaches you as you ready up your weaponry, praying to their machine spirits. Your autogun, revolver, and knife all seem primed and ready for battle. He pats you on the back. "We're first to the fight. It seems runner and stealth squads get all the fun."

You nod, apparently, this mission will be easy, but you never know. You remember what Urayyin told you, even if the enemies are few, they can outskill us or have a stroke of luck, we must keep on our toes.

Mira seems wary, looking around her. "This village seems important." she says. "It's got good views and one or two tall buildings, have we really beaten the Adrecharani back this far?"

Fortran shrugs. "Who knows? Maybe there's an elite stealth company hiding in there for all we know." he says with a joking tone. Only Rogard chuckled.

Urayyin comes close to your fire team, and tells all of you to crouch down. "Do not rest on your laurels. Adrecharani tribes are cunning, they will have tricks up their sleeve. Remember how you all compensate for each other's shortcomings and keep each other healthy." he whispers. "I'll leave this fireteam to you, corporal. I will take care of the rest of the squad, keep eye contact with at all times, you hear?"

You nod, you trust Urayyin, he is as cautious as a man can be. You look towards the village from your hiding spot, dawn will break soon, the horizon is reddenning slowly to your right. It's time to move. Urayyin points two fingers forwards with a sleight of hand and returns to his part of the squad.

You are about to move into an enemy held town, your orders are to sneak in at first and attack head on if detected. You have the cover of a few trees, but they are limited, only two people could fit behind each at once.

The default plan is to move in by sneaking and take cover and attack when detected.

>What will you do? What will you order your men to do? Your enemy awaits.

Why are we missing a guy from our half of the section?

Okay if we still have the heavy stubber, set it up in the middle here with the green X in a small ditch or depression in the ground so they are partially covered, or do it in a hull down position if there is no suitable ditch, in which they will cover and provide over watch for the advancing team.

We inch closer by belly crawling towards the purple marked building and Mira takes the left edge, we take the right edge and peek corners to observe for anything, while Rogar Stacks up next to the door and makes sure no one walks out while we aren't looking. After observing for a few minutes we regroup with Rogar at the door and prepare to clear the building, Us or Rogar will try and pin an enemy while the other finishes them silently with a knife, as Mira covers us with a gun (maybe loan her our pistol?), work our way through the purple marked building.

On the blue marked building, Urayyin breaks up into 3 teams of 2 people, and move towards the side of that building and breach on the left side, clear building.

Our stubber over watch will open fire and cut down anyone moving through the town middle. The stubbier by covering the middle, will have effectively cut the town in half and make it easier to deal with enemies.

Split the fireteam in 2. team 1 should be us and Rogard as we are probably the best equipped in CQC, team 2 will be fortran and mira, they will act as a support group because i dont think mira is at 100% and fortran cant really fight.
For the first house team 1 is going to take the back, if they set up defenses they will be mainly at the front of the house, team 2 will set up there and enter second, after we get the attention of whoever is inside, and surprise them twice.
After the first house is cleared, Fortran should take care of any of the wounded, and after that
all of us should move on to breach house 2, team 1 leading the charge.
If we manage to do this we take pressure off of the stealth team by removing enemy reinforcements in the center of town

The heavy stubber team is with you, yes. They will be setting up in that spot.

Urayyin will work on his own, though he has heard and will take into account what you've recommended. He does mention that it's unlikely that any stealth will be possible after first enemy contact, we're not a trained stealth squad.

Your fire team agrees with your plan, Mira mentions that she hasn't trained with pistols at all yet.

The stubber is on overwatch, but it mentions that there is not enough light to consistently aim yet, most of their fire will be suppressive.

It seems both posts are more or less in agreement of a stealthy approach to the right house.

WE BEGIN. Give me 1d100 best of three.
