There are several guards positioned at the castle gate in order to keep undesirables out. But seeing as how you were invited by His Majesty himself, you're obviously not included among their number. Figuring that you should get to know the people who you'll most likely be seeing every day, you approach the two guards at the eastern side of the gate.

"How's it going?" you say, making a lazy salute to the two guards as you swing your duffel bag off your shoulder, letting it rest on the ground.

"Same old, same old..." one of the guards says with a sigh. "Nothing ever happens here, but I guess we should be thankful for that."
"Yeah, this ain't exactly the kind of job where you want it to be exciting." the other guard chuckles as he leans on his spear lazily. "What about you, buddy? That's an Army uniform yer wearin' there, ain't this kinda outta yer jurisdiction?"
"Yeah, we don't get many grunts over-" The first guard stops in mid-sentence, a look of complete shock on his face.
"Arc, what's wrong?" the second guard asked.
"H-hooooooly shit. Mario! Do you have any idea who this is!?" the first guard, apparently named "Arc," said as he grabbed his friend's shoulders and shook him excitedly.
"Uh... no?" 'Mario' replies, clearly having no idea what's going on.

"Actually, the King requested that I be transferred into the Royal Guard. This is my first day, and I'm not all that sure on where exactly I'm supposed to be assigned. Or where I'm supposed to be staying now, since I'm not at the Army's barracks anymore..." you explain.
"Oh, well I'd be happy to-" Arc chirped out before he once again stopped mid-sentence.
"Good morning, gentlemen," a deep, booming voice rumbled behind you.

You turn around to see who just greeted you, and you see a massive beast of a man standing behind you with his arms crossed. While he doesn't seem to be angry, his expression is very stern.

"GOOD MORNING SIR VINCENT! IT CERTAINLY IS A GOOD MORNING INDEED!" both Arc and Mario stood at full attention, saluting "Sir Vincent" as hard as humanly possible.

Even though he is, admittedly, QUITE intimidating.

As such, you give a proper salute without the painful-looking form that Mario and Arc had.

"While it's always nice to see my subordinates in fine spirits, might I ask what all the commotion is about?" Sir Vincent asked, his voice having softened up but his expression still as stonefaced as ever.

"Ah!" Sir Vincent clapped his hands together, the sound from roaring like thunder. "I wasn't able to make the tournament myself, but His Majesty did inform me that he wanted the victor as a guard here!" he said, smiling like he's just met a new friend. "So I assume that this here is..."

"Yes, Sir Vincent. I'm Reinhold, here on orders from His Majesty the King." you replies.
"Reinhold, eh? Reinhold..." Sir Vincent seemed to be expecting something more.
"I don't have a last name, sir. It's just Reinhold," you said with a bit of shame, reminded for the first time in a while that you are of the lowest birth.
"No last name, eh? That's a shame... play your cards right, though, and maybe His Majesty will bestow one onto you!" Sir Vincent said with a wink.
"That might be nice..." you said sheepishly.

"Alright then, enough dawdling!" Sir Vincent said, slapping you on the back playfully. It felt like being hit with a hammer, though you did your best not to let that show on your face. "I take it that these are your belongings?" he said, gesturing towards your duffle bag.
"Yes, they are."
"Alright, then... MARIO!"

Sir Vincent gave the feeling that he'd crush your skull if you crossed him, but Sir Gregory was he kind of guy where you felt like he'd torture you and then slaughter your family while making you watch before finally tossing you into a pit of sharks after it was all done.

Yeah, if this is the kind of assignment that Sir Gregory was only doing under duress, you weren't exactly sure how you yourself would fare.

Your feeling of unease is growing with each step you take to... wherever it is that you're supposed to be. In order to hopefully get some peace of mind, you turn to Sir Vincent and ask him a question.

"Well, he HAD poise. But a man can only hold out for so long, and so he eventually crumbled under the pressure. The poor bastard didn't just quit his post, he left the kingdom outright."

"This assignment is THAT bad!?" Your feeling of dread has progressed to mild panic, this is sounding like a really bad idea to be honest.
"Eh, don't sweat it. I heard about what you went through before enlisting and judging from that, you can DEFINITELY handle this. Just be yourself and you'll be fine." he patted your back reassuringly. It felt like he put all of his weight into it.

Sir Vincent seems to believe that you can handle this task, whatever it is... but you're still on guard. Being cautious never hurt anyone, after all.

Tensing a bit under the weight of Sir Vincent's HEAVY hand, you watch the doorknob turn and open...

...and you are met with Sir Gregory's ever-sullen face.

"Ah. Sir Vincent. And you brought Reinhold with you. Great," he says. As you enter the room, he walks around the two of you and heads right for the door. "Since you're here, that means that it's okay for me to finally not be. Have fun," he said as he walked away, not even bothering to turn around to say goodbye properly.

He certainly seems relieved... but now it's your turn.
Looking around, you see that this is the front division of a rather large meeting room. There is a table with a teaset and some halfeaten cookies, most likely left by Sir Gregory. You're tempted to pour yourself a cup, but this isn't the time.

"This is Sir Vincent, here to present the acclaimed swordsman Reinhold to his new post!" Sir Vincent said in a loud, booming voice. To be honest, you're impressed.

"Ah, so you're finally here? I've been waiting -quite- a while and Sir Gregory was becoming just insufferable," you heard someone respond with a silvery voice.

And then the owner of said voice stepped into view.

Long, flowing hair, sparkling eyes, a cute face, in a pretty dress... you've been flat-out charmed.

"Reinhold, meet Princess Marianne. Starting today, you'll be acting as her personal guard." Sir Vincent said.

Your first impulse was to bow like a Super Gentleman, as you should in front of a lady of such refined beauty and grace.

Then you remembered that thing that you like to do with a sword and handkerchief to impress people, but a high-class lady like the Princess would probably think of such a thing as boorish and crude. Even though you honestly think it's pretty cool.

Lost as to what to do, you glanced at the table. That's right, the table! Sir Gregory left that teaset and cookies there! While you would never even think of offering anyone Sir Gregory's leftover cookie platter, there are several unused teacups left and the kettle seems to be mostly full. Girls like tea, right? At any rate, it does smell good...

"Pleased to meet you, Princess," you said with a slight bow. Then you headed towards the table and poured a cup of tea, presenting it to her as best you could.

And presenting tea was something that you were QUITE used to doing, as it's a skill that was beaten into you since before you can even remember. So yeah, it was pretty masterful if you do say so yourself.

"...and what is this?" Princess Marianne asked, glancing at the teacup with a frown, then moving her gaze to a soul-piercing stare right at you.
"I thought that maybe you'd like a cup of tea?" you said, trying to mask your nervousness.

Princess Marianne looked once more at the teacup. And then at the table where you retrieved it from. And then back at you.

"That is the tea that Sir Gregory had prepared, is it not?" she asked.
"Er, I believe it is..." you replied.
"And you expect me to drink his leftovers. The leftovers of a man who couldn't even be bothered to say goodbye before leaving his post."
"Um... I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean any-"
"Ugh, and this is the man who Father handpicked to be my personal guard. Wonderful, I have another classless fool to put up with," the Princess said with a deep sigh.

Since Princess Marianne clearly had no interest in drinking the tea that you had so kindly poured, you took it upon yourself to drink it yourself before placing the cup back on the table. You hadn't had anything to drink all day, and the tea tasted FAR better than the usual swill that you were used to drinking.

"...and that was?" she asks, glaring at you once again.
"Well, Princess, you made it clear that the tea wasn't to your liking, and I'm not the type to let food or drink go to waste." you say, doing your best not to offend her again.

"Hmph." she says, crossing her arms across her chest. "At least you have some manners. More acceptable than the worm who held your post previously. Or that classless brute Sir Gregory."

Letting out another sigh, she turns around, lowers her head and places her hand to her forehead in exasperation.

"Honestly, I don't understand what Father is thinking..."

Personally, I stopped liking it when I realized that we weren't ever going to grow as a character ever again. For example, how much did Archelon hype up the magic system? A lot. And yet we never fucking got anywhere with that. Never learned about the lore, never got involved in jack shit outside of being jerked around in the castle.

It really was pretty good even despite that though, one thing I will say is that the QM really had a way of getting you invested in the characters. It's just that the world building outside of the castles was wasted and the progression was kind of shit.

I can run this as a half shitpost if you want where I will write shit from now on if you want?

Level 1 Perceive Element
A Primary understanding of the element allows the initiate to perceive the intrinsic properties of base materials – their underlying structure, innate properties, and integral stability or lack thereof.

Level 2 Manipulate Element
Although you cannot conjure the force just yet, you may now alter the existing forces. You can dispel, amplify or shape (albeit poorly) all within your purview.

Level 3 Create Element
The Mage may create the element, change its density and his ability to shape is perfect.

Level 4 Control Major Forces
You are able to transmute yourself into the element for brief periods of time; also you may use level 2 abilities on a larger area – a mile or more.

Level 5 Apotheosis
You become one with your element, your body whilst identical to its pre-ascension state is purely composed of the force you have merged with. Also you may use level 3 abilities on a larger scale.

Control Power and Range

Each with a rank.

Vincent would be super High power super long range, so-so control because he rarely needs it.

Power being brute force
Control being fine manipulation
Range beign the length and breadth of your powers (so low range means only small area affects or you can only use touch spells, No fireballs for you. etc.)
