You yawn as you sit up in your bed. Finally, the weekend has come. You rub at your eyes a little and lay back in bed. With a quick look at your cell phone you confirm that yes did indeed wake up a little late today. It’s about 5:30 AM.

Great.

Well, nothing to do except get ready. You hop on out then stretch your arms. “Winona.” You look over at the bunk bed. “Winona, are you awake?” You roll your eyes. Of course not. No movement, nothing. You look over at the desk though and find a mug of coffee just sitting there. Oh. Don’t mind if you do! You walk on over and take a sip of it. Fresh, hot coffee. You hear the rustling of blankets behind you. “Winona, are you awake yet? I was going to make some breakfast.” You turn around. “Did you want eggs in a nest or-“ You spit out your coffee.

A boy is sitting up in Winona’s bed.

A BOY.

He looks over at you, groaning. “Ugh, Ellie. Why do you bother waking up so early on the weekends?”

“Y- Y- You-“ You shakily hold a finger up, pointing at him. “Wh- wh- whe- Where’s Winona?”

He squints. “Who’s Winona?” He brushes his red hair back. “My name’s Will, Ellie. Did you bump your head or something?”

The door bursts open, and in steps a really short tanned muscular guy. “Great news, guys!” Will looks down at him, surprised. “We’re going to be facing Camp Gagetown as our first matchup! Ain’t that great!?” He looks over at you. “Oh, hey, Ellie. Looking sexy as ever!” That- What. WHAT.

Another taller boy tries to enter but smacks his head on the doorframe. “Aw!” Behind him another bespectacled guy steps in too. “I think this calls for a celebratory game of baseball! Who’s up for it?” They all look over at you.

Th-. Th- Your crew is nothing but guys.

Your phone pings. A text message. You look at it, your hands shaking.

> JJ: Feeling naughty this morning, E! Look what I picked out!

A photo pops up of a girl wearing black lacy lingerie, laying back on her bed. Her freckled face is wearing a very bright smug grin as she winks at you.

“Ellie!” Winona pokes her head down from her bunk as you scream your head off. What? You’re back in bed! You quickly pull out your phone and start swiping through pictures. “Ellie, are you okay!? What happened!?” Pictures, pictures!

Oh thank God. Jeep Jockey is a guy. You take a breath, panting heavily. Sweat is running down your skin like you just stepped out of the shower. “Winona. You’re a girl, right?” She blinks, confused. “You’re a girl, right!?”

“Y-… Yes?” She looks away, slightly. “Did you not want me to be?”

“No! No! I just- It was- It was a dream! You were a guy! And Stack was a short guy! And Josie was fucking gigantic! And Ingrid- Ingrid was basically the same just a guy but- Jeep Jockey was a girl too! And it was horrifying!” You hug yourself, shivering in fright. Winona stares at you. “… Don’t stare at me like that. It was.”

Winona snickers. “Hehe, oh Ellie, you sweet summer child!” Winona pats your head. You glare a little at her. Sweet summer child your ass. Oh thank God it was just a dream. You couldn’t handle being stuck in a tank full of guys. Sweaty… muscular… hot guys. You grab your chest, feeling your heart race still from the thought of it. She drops out of bed. “On the bright side, I’m all better now!” She throws her arms up, grinning. “Yay! Let’s go out and get some ice cream or something today, Ellie! I’m hankering for rocky road!”

You sigh. “Eh. Sure, I guess.” Winona grins, moving to get her clothes on. You suppose a little bit of ice cream after breakfast will do you some good. Plus, it is the weekend, so why not?

“So you’re trying to get Miss McPherson’s old crew back together then.” Winona suckles on her spoon as she listens to you ramble about what happened last night. It’s a long story, but it’s enough to keep her entertained as you both sit in the ice cream parlor. Nancy brings you both another pair of ice cream cups as you continue on. “That’s noble of you, Ellie. I can’t imagine honestly having your life be ruined over something happening in your teens.”

“Trust me, it happens,” you say. “Just look at my Mom and Dad.” You snap your fingers, pointing to yourself. “Teen pregnancy.”

“But were their lives really ruined by you?” asks Winona. That-… Ugh. “They seem to really love you, Ellie.”

“Yeah.” Now you kind of regret saying that. They really do love you. You bite down on some more ice cold vanilla ice cream. “I gotta say though, Winona. I’m a little nervous.”

“Oh? How so?” she asks.

“The postseason, everything else,” you say. “We’re still not at twenty tanks. And what’s worse is that the limit’s gonna get upped to thirty. We’re going to be severely outnumbered too.”

“Now, Ellie. If there’s anything I know about you, it’s that you will find a way to get through it.” Winona leans forward on the table, smiling. “Though. I have to say, with all that we’ve done this summer and through this tournament. Losing in the postseason wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.” Oh? You look to her, confused. “We made a lot of friends, didn’t we? This summer we had was the best I’ve ever had! It was great!”

“Wouldn’t it be better if we won?” you say.

“It’d be perfect if we did. But nothing’s perfect,” Winona says.

“Losing wouldn’t be too bad,” you say. “But…”

“You want to win?”

“More than anything else,” you say. You have to admit, the idea of winning the tournament entirely in just the first year of being here, and the idea of beating the top champions in all of NATO and Tankery too is exhilarating. It’d do wonders for your reputation. People would come to respect you. They’d cheer and root for you even more than they do right now. It could go down in the history books. “I’d give up my arm to have a shot at the title.”

“You don’t need to,” says Winona. “We do have a shot.” She points a finger gun at you, then fires. “Pow. We win.” She smirks.

“Heh.” You snort a bit at that, taking another spoonful of ice cream. “Trust me, Winona. I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure we win that tournament. Griselda will hold the weight of the team on her shoulders, Iris and I will balance it out for her.”

Winona leans back in her seat, grinning. “Can’t wait! Hopefully our first match won’t be too harsh.” It’ll probably be really difficult to get over that hump. But you’re not worried. You’ve got a solid team, and a well-oiled crew, a lot of good tanks, and a faithful bunch of Commanders. “So. Anything you want to do later today?”

Hm.

You and Winona find Josephina in the library. She’s slump over in her seat like a corpse with a book on helicopters in her lap. You poke her in the neck, making her snap awake. “Merde.” She looks over at you. “Oh, Elodie. Winona!” She smiles a little, nervously. “How are you this day?”

“Doing alright,” you say. “How’s your parents?”

“Oh, them? They uh…” Josephina looks away slightly, apparently not wanting to answer that. “They’re okay.”

Winona says, “They’re visiting, aren’t they?”

“Oui.” You look over at Winona. She gives a very knowing look. She knows what that’s like. “But, listen. They’re really nice! They’re not as bad as you may think. In fact, I’m pretty sure they’re about to arrive soon in fact. Would you like to meet them?” she asks.

“I might as well,” you say. “You mentioned your Dad flies helicopters, right?”

“Oui,” she says. “He’s very enthusiastic about the prospect of me moving on to Helicraft. Though I have to admit.” She folds her arms. “Actually, Elodie. Winona.” She bites her lip. “I have to admit something that I feel might make things a little bit more complicated, oui?”

Winona hugs Josephina’s arm. “Oh come on you gentle giant you, what’s eating you?”

Josephina is silent, rubbing at the back of her head nervously. “It’s… ooohh, merde. Um. I love Tankery. I do.”

“But you want to pursue Helicraft?” you ask.

“No, no. Quite the opposite,” she says. “Elodie. Ever since I last talked to you about this, we’ve gotten into some amazing matches. We’ve met so many cool people too. And…” She frowns deeply. “I don’t think I want to do Helicraft anymore. I want to do Tankery with you and everyone else.” You step back, blinking. “I… I don’t want to disappoint my parents though so.”

“We’ll help you out,” you say. “I’m sure your parents will understand. And even if they don’t, we’ll make them understand. You’re a working girl now here on LGA. You can make your own decisions. Alright?”

“Alright.” Josephina smiles weakly, then she hugs you. Your face goes right into her chest. Right, height difference. “Well, they’ll be arriving soon actually. So what I propose is to give them a taste of Tankery. Show them how things work.”

“We can do that!” says Winona.

“Yeah, that’s a great idea, Josephina.” You place your hands on your hips. “Josephina, you were smiling. You just stopped. Is that not a good idea?”

Josephina’s smile did indeed drop into an expression of worry. “The reason my parents are visiting is more because they want to see if I have been keeping up on my helicraft skills.”

“Of course you haven’t,” says Winona. “You’ve been doing tanks for almost four months.” Josephina nods, now suddenly starting to shake from fear. “… not that that’s bad! It’s just- how are you going to explain to them that you’re now suddenly bad at flying helicopters?”

Josephina says, “I am so screwed.”

“We’ll meet them with you,” you say. “Don’t worry. Like you said, they’re nice people. Reasonable I assume. We’ll show them how things work here and we’ll set them straight. It’ll be like a new experience for them!”

Josephina nods violently. “Oui, oui! Of course! Come on, let’s go to the airport! I feel confident with you both with me now!” You smile. That’s the spirit!

Josephina hides behind you and Winona at the airport. Her impressive size though means that she has to squat down quite a bit. Well, so much for that. Josephina says, “I’m scared.”

“Don’t worry.” You smirk. “Just play it cool.” Winona nods, gently punching your arm. Josephina blinks, then points ahead.

“There they are.”

Stepping towards you now are two absolutely gigantic people. Well, now you know where Josephina gets her height from. They’re both dressed pretty casually, her father in some nice dark jeans and a light jacket over a t-shirt while her mom wears an orange dress beneath a brown jacket too. Her Dad must be at least 6 foot 5 though, good Christ. He steps up to you all, smiling. “Josephina! My honey!” He holds out his arms. And Josephina nervously steps between you two and hugs him. “How have things been?”

“Oh, er… bon.” She smiles very nervously, then looks to you. “Mom, Dad. Elodie Zumwalt and Winona Griffiths.”

“Charmed,” you say.

“Likewise,” says Miss DeGrasse. She smiles happily. “I understand you’re our daughter’s team leader of sorts.”

“Well, more Commander. Griselda is the overall team leader,” you say.

Mister DeGrasse smiles, continuing to hold Josephina in his arms. “Has our little girl been practicing her helicraft? I’m aware that LGA does not have a program for that but surely she has been at least trying to find some way to fly helicopters here.” Josephina quickly shakes her head.

Winona says, “Uh, Tankery’s our game, Mister DeGrasse. We don’t really have any avenues for her to pursue Helicraft. Right, Ellie?”

“Yeah,” you say. “I mean, barring Naval Studies Rescue.” Mister and Miss DeGrasse look confused by this.

Mister DeGrasse says, “Interesting. I assume she at least has her sights set on starting a Helicraft program at least? You must forgive us, she doesn’t tell us much.” Josephina shakes her head, biting her lip.

“Not as far as I know,” you say. You shrug at that, trying to look as innocent as possible. “I mean, we’re busy with Tankery and classes right now. So, I mean, Josephina is going to have to squeeze that in too. She’s a big girl but she’ll be stretched pretty thin, hehe…” Their unamused expressions silence you. “Ah.”

Mister DeGrasse says, “Well. Regardless. I think our little girl ought to be getting into the choppers pretty soon. No offense, Elodie, but our little girl happens to be a helicopter ace in the making I feel.”

Miss DeGrasse nods, smiling. “Her father used to take her for helicopter rides as a kid. She loved it.” Josephina looks away down at the floor, nervously.

Winona says, “Well, you know, we happen to be unlocking the tanks today so if you guys want we can go show you around our tank! Josephina would love to show you her cabin! It’s a bit cramped and we had to go a little custom for it but it’s great! Right?” She looks at you. You nod violently. Oh yes, definitely.

“Er- yeah.” Josephina steps towards you two. “Mom, Dad. Can we?”

The two parents glance at each other with a bit more confusion. Then Mister DeGrasse says, “I don’t see why not.” That’s spoken as if to entertain us than to say they actually want to see the tanks.

This is going to suck.

You, Winona, Josephina, and her parents arrive at the tank hangar after a spot of lunch. “Here we are!” you say. You motion to your tank, and see their rather unimpressed faces. Well. Okay then. “This is our tank,” you say. “Its name is Oliver. He’s gotten us through quite a bit. Josephina sits up front here and she drive us around.” You look to her. “And she’s really good at it.” Josephina smiles, nodding as well.

Mister DeGrasse says, “That’s nice.”

“Isn’t it?” says Winona.

Miss DeGrasse however says, “But we were hoping that we’d get to see our daughter fly a helicopter of some sort. Perhaps a Kiowa or a Loach.”

“We don’t have those,” you say. “Um. We can demonstrate her skill with a tank though! She’s one of the best drivers out there!” Her parents don’t seem particularly interested by that. Wow. You fold your arms, thinking.

Mister DeGrasse looks at the tank for a second, then back at you. “Well. You say she’s good at this tank driving business?”

“Like I said, one of the best!” You grin. Winona grins as well, trying to look assured too. Her parents are quite tough to please it seems. But no matter, you’ll sway their opinion yet. “Josephina even accompanied me to the All-Star game where only the best crews get to go and participate. That should tell you how good she is.”

Miss and Mister DeGrasse glance at each other, then say, “Could you give us a minute?” You nod. They walk away towards the entrance and start talking quietly with each other.

Josephina steps up to you then says, “They are so mad right now.”

“Really?” Winona tilts her head, pursing her lips. “They seem more confused than mad.”

“To be frank, I can see where Josephina is coming from,” you say. “Josephina, did you not tell your parents you haven’t been practicing?”

“Well…” Josephina looks away. “I mean, I told them I was taking Tankery to broaden my interests and everything but… no I didn’t tell them I wasn’t practicing.” Ah, and therein lies the problem. “Plus, as far as I know, my parents are just clueless about tanks. My Dad is more into helicopters obviously and my Mom never liked tanks to begin with. But I’m just so scared of disappointing them, you know?”

Winona says, “Disappointment isn’t that bad. Just be upfront and tell them.”

“Yeah,” you say. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“They could tell me to stop taking Tankery and transfer me to a school that actually does Helicraft?” says Josephina.

“We’ll try and sway their opinion. Don’t worry.” You look over at Josephina’s parents as they talk. To be honest, you actually do fear that Josephina’s parents will just transfer her out to a school that does offer helicraft. Not just because Josephina is a natural driver, not just because losing her would cripple your crew. But because Josephina above all else is your friend. You can’t lose her over something like this. “Let me talk to them.” You walk on over to them. Josephina and Winona watch from the sidelines.

“… should we really let her go on with this?” asks Mister DeGrasse. “I mean, it’s clear she enjoys it but is it right for her?”

“I don’t know,” says Miss DeGrasse. “You remember a couple of years ago, a girl got hit by a shell. She can’t use her legs! This sport is unsafe!” They look over at you. “Oh, Elodie. Sorry, forgive us, we were just talking.”

“I understand,” you say. “I don’t mean to impose but I think Josephina really enjoys Tankery. No, scratch that, I don’t think. I know.” You place your hands on your hips, smiling up at them. “Listen. We’d like to demonstrate Josephina’s skill at the wheel. If you’d-”

“Elodie, I know you want us to accept that Josephina is good at Tankery.” Mister DeGrasse interrupts you. “But we didn’t come here expecting that she would take Tankery. Josephina asked us repeatedly to allow her to apply for LGA. We knew she was taking Tankery, yes. But we came in with the assumption that she would eventually get into Helicraft.” Er… He folds his arms, looking down at you with some hint of displeasure. “Now tell us, be honest. Is Josephina going to take Helicraft here or is she wasting her time? If she wants to start, we can front the money to start the program.”

“Why is it wasting her time?” you ask. “She really enjoys it. And she’s really good at it too. I mean, I don’t claim to know anything about Helicraft but Tankery is a really great outlet too. She works with a team, she has people rely on her and she works well under the pressure of it all.”

Mister DeGrasse says, “Helicraft is the more popular sport though.” … is it really though? “You know, Gertrude Pool’s cousin happens to be a very distinguished Helicraft pilot. Plus, my wife and I have always intended for her to take Helicraft. We figured she would be taking it as soon as practical here on LGA, either starting a program or working to at least practice to get into a college that offers said program.”

Miss DeGrasse smiles. “And as well, I took Helicraft myself. It’s like you said, it’s a team sport as well too and it breeds discipline and good values like Tankery does. We would just prefer if she did that than this.”

“I understand,” you say. “But…” Their increasingly worried looks are worrying you too.

Miss DeGrasse says, “Perhaps we can work this out another time, Elodie. But right now, we’re not very interested in a demonstration of your tanks.” Mister DeGrasse rubs the back of his neck, looking away. “And perhaps we’ll have to have a discussion later with Josephina too about that as well too.”

“Are you sure?” asks Miss DeGrasse.

“Positive,” he says. Miss DeGrasse looks between you two, then shrugs. She decides to head on out and call a cab. Josephina doesn’t look surprised by that departure. Instead, she looks more surprised that her Dad had stayed. The two of you come back to the group as a whole. Then he says, “Alright, Josephina. How about you show us how this works?” He points to you. “I’d rather she not help you though. Let me see how you do on your own.”

Josephina nods violently. “Oui! Go ahead and climb up! I’ll be right with you!” Winona motions Mister DeGrasse aboard. The two of them start climbing in.

Right, this should be good. The engine starts up as you walk out towards the training grounds. She’ll give him the ride of his-

The Comet speeds past you, the engine screaming. Okay. Maybe that was a little fast.

The Comet hits a berm and goes flying into the air. Way too fast! It crashes into the ground and goes running. You can only imagine what’s going on inside. Is her Father screaming his head off? Is she focused squarely on driving purely to impress him? Josephina starts driving the Comet towards the fences. Mind the fences, Josephina! You see a great cloud of dust as she powerslides around, narrowly avoiding crashing through. She pulls a straight U-Turn sliding sideways before correcting herself and going the other way.

Maybe you should’ve gotten yourself into the tank.

Josephina drives up to the two concrete walls, only large enough for a single tank at a time. She starts pulling the tank into a forwards spin, like in a Shimada death blossom. Josephina, please! Stop! You’re going to crash the tank! You grab your hair, almost pulling it out.

She slides the tank through sideways before correcting once again. This is going to give you a heart attack! Aaagh!

Iris sips some tea next to you. Wait- WHAT. You yelp, jumping. Where’d she come from? “Josephina appears to be having a good time.”

You scream internally at Josephina coming so close to wrecking the tank. “… yeah, she’s having a good time,” you say. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

Iris says, “Well, hopefully not too good of a time. We’ll need that tank soon for the postseason.” You nod slowly. Oh God, please. PLEASE.

Josephina finally takes the tank to a halt right in front of you two. Josephina pops out of the hatch, grinning happily. Winona climbs out of the turret hatch, then flops out onto the ground. Winona’s Dad meanwhile gets up out of the turret hatch as well, shaking his head repeatedly and holding his stomach. “How was that, Dad!?” asks Josephina loudly.

Mister DeGrasse holds up a finger, blinking his eyes before saying, “Interesting.” He snorts, a slight smirk on his face. “Like a rollercoaster.” He drops down off the tank, stumbling a bit. “I’ll have to tell your Mom about that. Personally, I didn’t think Comets could even do that kind of stuff.”

“You know what a Comet can and can’t do?” you ask.

He pauses, looking back at the tank and at Josephina. “Ah, well.” He shrugs. “It just looks so big and bulky so to see it move like ducks in water, that’s just mindblowing to me.” You nod, smiling. “Well, I think I’ve had enough excitement for today. Uh, Josephina. Good riding with you, alright?”

She waves happily. “Thanks, Dad! You gonna tell Mom how it went?”

“Yeah, yeah,” he says. He starts walking back towards the curb. “I’ll see you girls around, maybe.” He waves goodbye politely, still stumbling as he walks.

Josephina pumps her fist. “I think we’ve impressed Dad, Elodie!” She jumps out of the hatch and hugs you tight. Again, face to the chest. “Thank you so much, thank you!”

“Ah, don’t worry about it,” you say. “Though, I’d check his browser history. Maybe he’s a closet fan.”

Josephina lets go, now confused. “You think so?”

Iris says, “He seems that way to me at least.”

“Huh.” Josephina rubs her chin a little. “Well. Maybe I can talk it out with him.” She bounces on her feet though, still excited. “Still! Maybe if I turned Dad, I can turn Mom to it too! And then I can keep doing Tankery with you guys! Oh I’m so excited!” She points back to the tank. “Let me repark the tank!” She hops back into the Comet.

Iris says, “You really believe that?”

“I just have a hunch,” you say. “I mean, most guys who like Tankery tend to hide it from my experience. We’ll just see what happens and-”

Josephina crashes the Comet into a wall. You and Iris look over. Well. Scratch damage at least. Josephina pokes her head out. “S-… Sorry!”

You sigh. At least it’s the weekend.
