/qst/ - Quests

Welcome to Titanic Tournament Quest. Here you are Rickert Volgunsen a bitter, but ambitious former super soldier who is now the proud creator and pilot of the 1.5 mile tall titan Algol, a massive devil themed war machine.

Rickert is currently at Polaris Station, a Metropolis sized space station that is hosting the first round of the great tournament. A competition where the many titan pilots from around the known universe compete for glory and a chance to become the Emperor of earth.

When we last left Rickert he had successfully slain a dangerous kaiju on a distant alien world in order to make a little extra money, as well as use the Kaiju's body to craft new equipment for Algol.

After cleaning up and retrieving the beast's remains Rickert is currently resting aboard his mobile fortress, contemplating his next course of actions.

With the remains of the kaiju now aboard you can leave the system. The patron who posted the bounty was kind enough to wire the money to you the moment you produced the creatues corpse. More than enough money to buy additional equipment and weapons. The remains of the Kaiju's body also could be used to produce fine weapons and equipment provided you payed an Artisan to craft them. That massive tail blade looks like it could be made into a superior melee weapon if you decided to invest in crafting it.

The thought of money and investment reminds you that there was bounty for a rampging titan pilot. Some entitled ass who began throwing a tantrum when he could not enter the tournament. You could still seek him out and collect the bounty. The bounty network still has the task listed as unclaimed. Then there's the pirates to think about. A smaller bounty, but the task is considerably easier than fighting another titan tier opponent.

Plenty of time to take another job, especially since you killed the Kaiju so quickly.

What do you do?
>Go after the rampaging titan
>Hunt the pirate fleet
>Go back to Polaris. You think that you have enough money for now.

>Punishing an uppity noble it is

While you examine the bounties that remain open, you look at the developments in the case of the rampaging titan.

The crazy bastard has fought of another attempt to bring him down, and now it seems that the deranged pilot is bombarding colonized worlds. The system he is curently in is under siege and it appears that his bounty has risen from 10 to 15 credits. Although the last attempt to kill or capture him has revealed some dangerous developments.

Current status of Bounty
>The target is Carolus Homer Pilot of the Titan Hector
>The titan has 2 shoulder mounted energy weapons, 1 torso mounted weapon, and a two handed energy weapon.
>The titan possesses a sturdy energy shield
>The titan possesses some kind of Augmented power source as its weapons show considerably higher output when fired
>Likewise the pilot has shown considerable ability to effectively hit targets with a majority of his weapons.

Further calls have been made to stop this rampage before more people die the death count has risen to nearly 20 million already and it seems that the pilot intends to move toward more populated targets.

What do you do?

>Go back to Polaris and stock up on any weapons or gear you may want for this battle.
>Go immediately innocent people are dieing.

Note that waiting will not change the actual fight against the rampaging titan, but intervening now will greatly help with your reputation, by showing in the time to save a big city from being attacked, therefore saving tens of millions from death you will gain some positive notoriety.

>Rickert tries to be a big damn hero

If there is one thing that you despise morethan anything else are nobles who believe that their position allows them to simply do whatever they want regardless of the consequences of their actions. When you were young you experienced the complete indifference of the nobility first hand. The death and destruction caused by their actions never registering or even being addressed at any point, the suffering of millions being effectively beneath them.

You will personally strip this disgusting cur of every possession he holds, and then you will take his life, and the fact that millions will love you for striking him down will only make your victory even sweeter.

You accept the electronic contract and rise from your seat, there are preparations to make before you face this adversary.

You take your tram to the enginnering command center and examine Agol for any damage or modifications. You remember that after your first battle Algol's physical strength and internal locomotive systems were strengthened.

Upon further inspection you notice that Algol's internal structure has shifted again. This time the servo motors and atificial muscles have become considerably more durable and efficient. You suspect that pressing Algol to his limits wrestling with that kaiju has done this, and you must admit that although it is strange for a machine to evolve like this, the benefits are most appreciated.

Seeing that Algol is in perfect fighting condition you return and occupy your time until you can finally take down the renegade titan.

Update
>Trait gained!
>Unrelenting might (Bo3 when making making melee and strength checks instead of Bo2)
>>
>battle begins

From orbit around a lightly populated world you can already tell that your prey on the surface of the planet, moving toward a city to destroy it.

Luckily the planet's orbital defense guns prevented the deranged pilot from dropping on top of any major population center, but if not stopped he will certainly kill millions.

You signal the local authorities from orbit and prepare to descend and make battle. From within Algol, your anger translates to flashes of lightning and discharges of heat along Algol's Promethean frame. This bastard will wish he was never born when you get done with him.

From on high you fall to the planet below, seething with heat and static electricity. When you reach the ground the impact shakes the earth and incinderates everything for miles. A thick haze of smoke drapes the landscape as far as the eye can see, Algol wading waist deep in the ashy blanket his crimson eyes glowing malevolently as you march to meet your target.

On a wide grassy plane you see the approach of the titan Hector. It is probably the most guady thing you have ever laid eyes on. The machine has a colossal scarlet crested helmet like head all inlaid with bronze and gold. The armor od the tian is inlaid with the same, but in addition to the gleaming metal are precious stones and other precious metals. The armor all around the body is enameled Platinum along with golden scrollwork. The two handed gun the titan holds gleams due to all of the bright metal and gems deocrating it.

It's disgusting how ornamented this godmachine is, but you can suspect that considering what the pilot is currently doing, his choice in appearance is indicative of his personality.

A vain asshole.

You stride toward your enemy, smoke and ash following you as the landscape is torn asunder from your pasing.

What do you do?
>Talk shit. This sorry excuse for a pilot is breaking the edict and slaying millions in a glorified child's tantrum. He deserves to be knocked down a peg.
>Beat him to a metallic pulp. Close to melee and beat him until his titan is scrap.
>Open fire. Bring all of your firepower to bear, leave naught but molten slag.

Even if you don't take the option to talk shit you can still say something if you take the other options.

"Who dares stand in my way this day hmmm. Some other whelp who can't understand who there better is? Two others have already came to get in my way and I sent them wth their tails between their legs. So what do you and that ugly pile of shit you're piloting can do?"

You floor you thrusters and sprint toward the great big shiny cunt just as he starts talking.

"Oh think you can approach the great Homer! wel have at you worthless peasant!"

The array of energy weapons covering Hector light up and launch toward you before you can close to hand to hand combat.

The disgustingly ornate gun Hector holds belches huge streams of bright crimson death, while a plasma mortar shot hurtles toward you.

You deftly plant your feet before using you momentum to side step the spray of lasers then the mortar. Unfortunately the two lasers on Hector's shoulders strike Algol's chest.
Annoying that the bastard hits you, but it's not important now that you finally close the gap between you.

You consider your options for a split second while you get ready to clobber this upjumped jerk, when it occurs to you that the fancy gun he's waving is probably the reason why he was able to fight off the other titans.

Just as you rear back Algol's right arm for a devestating punch you finalize your plan, you're going to try and take the bastard's fancy gun.

"Take this you golden turd, sister loving cock mongler!"

Ah long streams of obscene insults. Brings you back to your younger days. The fond memories of swearing up and down all day warms your heart as you out a dent in Hector's head.

The follow up left cross whips the golden head of Hector backwards and finally opens him up to your next move.

Just as Hector attempts to level the barrel of his gun at you, you grip the barrel of the gun and then grab the titan's hand.

"Give me that you pompous fool. You're going to put someones eye out with this!" You cackle and tear the gun from his grip. Literally tear it from his grip in this case, as the hand around the weapons grip is torn free from Hector's body and goes flying when you take hold of the gun.

"You brainless animal how dare you! Do you know houw much even Hector's hands are worth you mud drenched moron!"

You level the massive gun at him in response to his threat. Now let's see what to do?

You grow tired of this buffonary. This pilot is decidedly amatuer, despite his bellowing insults. The idiot's huge gun though will make for a fine addition to your arsenal, in fact.

"Here catch this. Hehehe." Your rumbling chortle is cut off the by the cataclysmic noise of all of your weapons, save the ones mounted on your arms firing.

The excess heat is enough that it scorches the ground beneath you through convection alone. The enemy titan fairs worse of course. The directed barrage of annihilating energy sears, and melts most of the torso and arms of Hector causing flood of molten material to flood the surrounding area.

Hector is thrown back slightly and then falls to his knees. You feel a little bad damaging a titan this way. It can't help that its pilot is a worthless cunt after all.

"No! No! This.. this can't be happening!"

The wretch attempts to ward you away with a half melted arm as you approach to finish him off.

You know with all of that metal melting off, Hector is most likely much lighter now. Your trademark cruel smile once more splits your face and you remember what you did to the junk titan.

"Please, I mean you can let me go right, I mean I'm defeated after all right? I yield sir, good show, you are the better maaaan!" He begins screaming when you grab Hector by the head and metallic groin and hoist him upward.

"Pick them up" Algol's speakers boom, a thunderclap roar across the planes. The enemy pilot begins blubbering platitudes, but you tune out external audio.

"Lift them high."

You bend Algol's massive legs and throttle your thrusters to their limits. With earthquake inducing force you rise through the air, a cone air and friction encapsulating you.

When you reach the apex of you jump you turn hector upside down and place your feet beneath the armpits of the enemy titan then grab his legs. Once again throttling your thrusters you accelerate downward.

As an added bonus you begin to spin. As you hurtle toward the earth you begin to burn up just as if you were descending from orbit. A tornado like funnel is created due to your spinning just as you reach the earth.

"AND BRING THEM DOWN HARD!"

Algol's booming voice carries over even the cacophonous sound of your descent.

The impact creates a fissure and at last hector is defeated. Your sensor indicate all major functions are either deactivated or outright destroyed. Only one thing lleft to do now.

What do you do with the renegade pilot?

>Squish. When he gets out squash him like the insect he is.

>Leave him to the tender mercies of the native population, but watch to make sure the kill is confirmed

>Take him in so he can be humiliated on a galactic level when they put him on trial then execute him.

>mob justice it is.

You retreat slightly to get a better look at your handy work, also so you can immediately spot the uppity shit when exits his Titan then apprehend him.

When a house sized panel open on the lower back of hector you notice Carolus getting out along with what looks like a hovercraft of some kind. It's gold plated and has gems in it, so that helps with tracking it.

You can't very well take a pot shot without immediately killing him, and you've already made up your mind on how you wish for him to die.

Looks like this will need a personal touch.

>you exit algol and get into you power armor armor.

You run through a quick check of all of your systems, its been a while since you've put on the old armor, but now is the perfect opportunity.

Taking flight, or close to flight anyways you hound the snooty little jerk as he attempts to flee.

His escape is cut short when you use your plasma blade to cut the back end of his hovercar off. The white hot energy blade cuts like the metal body of the car is made of air a dazzling display of heat discolored metal and sparks dance through the air, right before you grab the idiot driver and make your descent to the ground.

"Please! Please! Have mercy! I'll give you everything I have, I'm wealthy beyond belief! Please!"

Snot and tears mix and drip from his face, right before the sea of piss comes out of his rediculous outfit. Rather than a sensible pilot suit, her has what looks like some poofy gold thread throwback to some ancient era.

"Ugh. I wouldn't waste the effort of killing you, you miserable wretch.:

The brief hope plays onto Carolus' as his smile reaches his ears and he kisses you armored feet. He recoils though when the heated metal burns his lips. Dumbass, you were just using the thrusters on your feet to catch him.

"Refrain from groveling I will not allow you to live, you have broken the eddict and therefore you must die. I merely intend to expedite your death."

You grab the blubbering imbecile and make way to the nearest settlement. It takes over an hour and you have to shut off your audio to avoid listening to Carolus' constant pleading. You'll need to clean your armor as well. He's went and soiled himself and some of it has unfortunately gotten on your armor.

Rushing toward the nearest city the wind rushing by and the ecstasy of using your old armor again is just what you need to wrap up this little diversion. You humiliate an opponent, take all of his possessions, then watch him get torn apart by an angry mob. Good day all things said.

When you arrive at the city, you touch down near the center square before dropping off Carolus. The crowd from the looks of it have been watching your fight. The many neaby holoscreens in the area are focused on your unmoving titan and the wrecked Hector. The assembled civilians look in curiosity as you land and leave your present.

"Hello. Just so you know this. Is the pilot who intened to kill you all for his amusement. You may scan his face as I have already alerted the authorities to his identity and checked his meaningful information with the bounty registry. Do with him as you will."

You leave the doomed pilotjust as the mob closes in. His screams of fear and pain as he is beaten, stabbed and eventually torn to shreds is excellent. You fear that sometimes your hatred and prejudice of nobles will overcome your sense and get you into trouble, but this is a most welcome sight. Youtake the opportunity to plant yourself on top of a tall building and drink a little bit. The sun is out and it really is a nice day. Maybe you'll visit one of the local resteraunts before leaving?

Not sure if I will be around when you are running or not. I will vote if I am.

I think that we should strip the new titan of weapons and equipment to improve Algol. Something like the following could be our new loadout:

Armament (6 slots)

2 shoulder: 2 Long barrel laser cannon (1d10 energy weapon)
2 torso: 2x Plasma mortar (3d6 energy weapon)

2 arm: Mastercrafted Laser blaster (5d6+2 energy weapon, two handed, upgradeable)

Equipment (4 slots)

1. Heavy thrusters (jumping high or quickly closing distance is an option)

2. Heavy duty energy capacitors (+2 damage with energy weapons)

3. Massive reactor core (+2 to energy damage, stacks with heavy duty energy capacitors)

4. Nano forged Adamantium plate (+5 universal damage resistance)
>>
>>2437062
We can live without have guns on Algols hands. The Mastercrafted Laser Blaster should make up for them.

Besides the Mastercrafted Laser Blaster and if we were to fix up the gaudy pile of shit, how much would the titan, weapons and equipment sell for?

what would be the cost for hiring an artisan for the monster commissions?

can we hail or shipping buddy later? possibly find some more npc's to socialize with?
>>
>>2437221
The titan in its current state would sell for 25 credits on accoun of being a beaten pile of gold shit essentially, but its core is still functional and evn if you don't bother to actively repair it it regenerates its internal systems. It would take more than a year of passive recuperation to get back in fightning shape, but some TLC from Rickert could get it done in half the time.

A fully functional titan even without weapon and equipment would get a cool 100 credits. If the titan gains some traits even more.

The laser cannons both go for 5 credits and the Plasma mortar goes for 10 credits.

The laser blaster if you chose to sell it goes for 30 credits.

for the equipment
>heavy shield 10 credits
>massive reactor core 15 credits
>advanced targeting system 5 credits
>heavy armor 5 credits

Overall if you were to sell off everything and a fully repaired Hector you could make a total of 185 credits

Now that at least in quest terms is alot of dough. Enough to probably to buyseveral loadouts worth of weapons and equipment for Algol and it would go a long way toward turning from a delta class titan into a beta class titan (which is a big deal, because beta class titans are bigger and have more weapon slots, health, and equipment slots).
>>
>>2437221
>cost of hiring an artisan for the monster commissions

Tail blade into a titan melee weapon- 30 credits weapons stats would be (i changed them a little since the last thread) 2d10+str+energy damage, armor piercing, shield piercing.

Claws into fist upgrades- 10 each weapon is now 1d8+str+energy damage

Fangs-don't know what kind of weapon they could be used for maybe teeth for a chain saw bayonet for the laser blaster? but something like 10 credits for the teeth

Lightning spikes-10 credits to turn into arc launcher type weapons nothing special (1d10+energy damage weapons)

Thunder cannon organ- also can't think of a good weapon idea, but the cost for it would 10 or 15 credits

Converting the beast equipment would be cost equivalent to ther ordinary counterparts, although the regen equipment would be unique and go for probably 30 credits

You can totally make a social call with Neil, and if you go to any of the other sections on polaris you can find Npcs. Nobles on the top level, ordinary folk on the other 3 when I get back tonight I will put down what activites you can do in each section.
>>
>>2437472
If it takes that long then can we hire a crew to fix it up to a worthy state worth selling? How much would upgrading a ddelta class titan to a beta class cost?
>>
>>2437472
The Thunder Cannon organ could probably would work like the plasma mortar, or take up a head slot?
>>
>>2437642
>>2437646
>hiring a crew
You could pay off an artisan and maybe some of their apprentices to handle the repair job to speed it up while also allowing freeing Rickert from doing it. You would probably end up paying 30 credits leaving with only a profit of 70 credits, but it would go faster, you could maybe get it fixed by the last match of the polaris round.

>thunder cannon as a head mounted weapon
I actually like that idea a lot. Algol having a built in weapon that he shoots out of his mouth. An extra ranged weapon like that would be nice. I'll consider that. You don't have a head weapon slot by default but it's possible.

>upgrade to a beta class titan

250 credits and with that upgrade you get base 300HP, 11 weapons slots (4 shoulder,3 torso, 4 arm mounted), You can one hand the two handed weapons and mount single handed weapons to your arms, and use an entire other class of two handed weapons (those are some big fucking guns), and on top of that you get a big bonus for strength checks against delta class titans.
>>
A stroke of luck today I can start much earlier.
Starting again at 3pm EST instead of 8pm. Hope you guys see this in time.
>>
>>2437700
Nice. Any more jobs we can take? I want to sell those spare shoulder lasers we have.
>>
>>2437781
Just the Pirate job, its easy money Titans are pretty much the apex predators of the galaxy with their only rivals being kaiju. A fleet of battle ships despite being roughly the same size aren't nearly as strong or as durable as a titan. The down side is that there will be little loot because the battleships don't have any titan tier weaponry.

You'll get some more job options after the next match in the tournament.

>selling stuff
You can go to the top section to sell titan equipment to other pilots. Artisan's will buy rare stuff, but they don't care to buy stuff they could make themselves and make a greater profit.
>>
>>2438017
Would we get a better reward if we captured the larger ships mostly intact and capture some pirates alive? I have this idea of having Algol float around and just poke at their thrusters with a finger to immobilize them. Then call the galactic police force to aprehend the pirates.
Would the Holmer titan sell for more if we removed all the gems and gold? How much would the unnecessary shiny bits sell for?

Just throwing out some ideas to the other anons. What do you guys think about donating a credit to the few worlds that suffered from the noble bitch fit? What if we told Rickert who we are and brought him along?
>>
>>2438038
Wait shit. I mistook the guy we meet with Rickert. I freakin forgot his name.
>>
>>2438038
If we can put a weapon in algol's head as a future possibility, what about including the monster teeth for a bite attack? Maybe include some monster flesh to act as skin so Algol can speak in sync with Rickert and make facial expressions?

Bio-mechanic stomach too to fuel monster electric bits?
>>
>>2438039
>>2438038
>the guy whose name your forgot
The guy we made friends with is Neil Schultz a businessman who owns a shipping and drydock company.

>selling all of the ornamental metal from hector
Yeah i'd say all of the gold and platinum would be worth some cash.

Loot update
>assorted precious metals. 10 credits

Gold and the like aren't as valuable as they used to be due to space mining making mineral resources much more abundant.

>Better reward
No unofrtunately. The pirate hunting is meant to be an easy job to make a little cash. The authorities really don't care if they are taken dead or alive, so blast them to your hearts content, or make em squirm. Either option is valid.

>Monster teeth bite attack, monster flesh face, bio mechanic stomach battery
All interesting ideas, I'd say that you could pull all of these off. As long as it makes some sense and doesn't break the game I'll go along with it.
>>
>>2438068
So no extra cash for possibility or getting whole debatable intact ships? Dang. Let's do it then I guess.

Any news on the noble we left behind and the people saved?

>>2438082
>pirate hunting is a go

>the fate of carolus and the reception of the locals
Carolus is quite dead as he was mobbed by the inhabitants of the city he was planning on destroying, then torn to pieces by said mob.

Your communications center was flooded by millions of thank you letters for stopping the disaster. You know like people saying they'll name their kids after you and that they're gonna make a statue of algol in the center of the city you visited.

The story is already circulating across the galactic internet and gaining traction. You have gained some popularity and now your fights from polaris are also getting more traction.

>do you want to upload your recording of the battle between you and the kaiju?
On one hand, any opponent who wants to get an edge on us will see. On the other, trillions of people will watch it and it would be a crime to not let some family enjoy monster murder from the comfort of their homes.

Ok. So maybe an anon or two might be against this or not, but I would like to suggest we donate a single unit of our titan funding credit to the survivors of dickweed's tantrum and the rebuilding of cities.

Can we use the ten credits worth of gold to hire a team of the most sadistic lawyers on this side of the galaxy to seize all of the assets of dipsticks holds and possessions? i.e. can we sue him family for everything they're worth?
>>

>>
>>2438101
Voting yes. Just notices I didn't exspicited said yes or no in my post.
>>
The light burning of the gifted liqour you recieved from one of your adoring fans fills you with two different types of warmth.

While you hate nobles and probably would ahve killed the uppity cunt on principle alone, you are genuinely happy that you could save some innocent lives. You didn't have the power or the luxury to play the hero when you were a soldier, but now that you have a titan some light heroics is no longer beyond you.

Speaking of heroics you look once more into the bounty registry. Nothing critical like a rampaging titan or kaiju, but the pirate fleet from earlier hasn't been destroyed. Hardly a challenge, but you have to be a real asshole to be considered a REAL pirate. Space warfare is common enough that some awful crimes can occur with some regularity, but to gain this kind of bounty can only mean they may have bombarded and heavily damaged a heavily populated planet. Tens of millions of deaths.

You take another sip of your alcohol and set a course for their last known whereabouts.

Time to make a trip to the shooting gallery.

>you head toward the pirate fleet and get into Algol before engaging them.

>Do you take your normal loadout or do you replace your arm ounted weapons with the big gun?
Yes or no

>what equipment do you take?
normal loadout (H. thrusters, adamntium plate, heavy capacitors, heavy armor)
new loadout (what is it? Use loot and current inventory, no monster stuff though)

Drifting lazily toward the feet you take note of their formation. Unremarkable orb formation, smaler ships making up the outer perimeter , capital ships in the center, overlapping fields of fire and all that.

Standard military vessels, gunmetal exterior, batteries of guns, missile pods and some larger weapons.

This won't be too hard.

>Enemy engaged: Hydra Pirates
>20 heavy cruisers 1hp (incapable of harming you)
>5 Battle ships 5hp (1d4 energy damage per ship)
>1 dreadnaught 15HP (2d4 ballistic damage)

>>
>>2438187
Nope the moment Carolus decided to break the edict, his family disowned him and actually set the original bounty of 10 credits. They did the right thing and to be honest they felt genuinely really bad about the whole thing and are paying for the damages out of pocket.
>>
>>2438195
>bully, close to melee and starting punching and bludgeoning them
Pretty much punch the battleships, then threaten the dreadnaught to destroy the smaller ship before we crush it and make it their grizzly tomb.
>>

Algol does not need hand held weapons; his opponents themselves are part of his arsenal.

Keep that one hidden for the tournament.

My plan is to get then to turn themselves in under the threat of annihilation and put them into prison system that uses their prisoners for labor. Or sell then into slavery. Either works.
>>
>>2438327
In addition: have Algol punch his fist together. If we were in atmosphere i could imagine all of their ships shaking from the shockwave. But since we're in space that's another can of beans....unless the first hit with an exceptional amount of force, then maybe?
>>
>>2438379
Slavery isn't really a thing in the galaxy, not because of morals mind you, but because technology has davanced far enough that there's no real demand for brute labor that slavery is meant to fill. Drones and robots do stuff like picking food and really dangerous or simple jobs. Poverty is actually quite rare as well as a result of resources being so plentiful.

You gently move toward the pirate formation before sarting up your decryption programs. Titans are unhackable because the only part of a titan with wireless capabilities is the comm array, everything else is hardline all the way through. Would be real shitty to build a titan just for some jackass to shut it down remotely.

You however had taken the opportunity to put some hacking tech in just in case you have to deal with something like this.

Not long after starting you have complete control over their comm systems. Time for some browbeating.

To add to your performance you amplify the power in Algol's hand then slam both hands together. The storm of lightning and sparks has an immediate response. You keep up the light show and do the same with your ranged weapons. Stray bolts of lightning from the plasma mortars actually destroys one of the cruisers as get closer.

Show time, you edit your vocals a little with some reverb and distortion to get them going. Your voice is incredibly deep and imposing already but some finetuning never hurts.

>"Lo and behold, me. Your judge. Your executioner. Your GOD. Your pathetic guns won't save you. Your gods will not aid you. >the pirates reconsider trying to fight a giant metal space devil and give up.

You are bombarded with surrender messages, the pleas for mercy flash across your main screen with enough frequency that the red alert lights gives you a headache.

Ah the old fire and brimstone act never fails. It helps that spacefarers tend to be rather superstitious though.

You get the pirates to line up so you can tear off their weapons before escorting them to the nearest authority. You are careful to make sure none escape and while some make an attempt you destroy them before they can make it too far.

Soon enough the pirates are offloaded onto some world and temporarily imprisoned until they can be moved to a penal colony.

The money rolls in and at least the available contracts are expended.

You wake from your customary brief slumber just before arriving once more at Polaris.

One more week before the match, which considering all of the wonderful money and gear you've acquired will be even more successful then before.

The only problem you face now is waiting until the next match. With no jobs available, you could always look for a duel, but with the next match so close you imagine most of the other pilots won't risk any kind of damage. You might visit the artisans, but any personal order will take until after the coming match, and buying their stock then installing won't take more than a day at best.

six days of inactivity is hardly a good use of your time, and you've never been one one to lay about unless you were very tired, and your excursions and hunting has left you in high spirits if nothing else.

As you pace about your modestly furnished chambers a thought occurs. That fellow you met at the Atlas club is still at Polaris, or at least you suspect he is. Neil seemed like a decent fellow. A family man on sabbatical fom his company to spend time with his kin and enjoy the festivities. He showed an appreciable amount of knowledge about titans and at least in the brief amount of time you interacted with him he seemed like a friendly man.

It's been a long time since you've had friends. Real friends anyways. You were among the last of your unit after the war, and in your time as a mercenary general you kept your underlings at arms length. A good commander must not become too atttached to the lives of his soldiers, or else he risks losing his edge.

It stings to remember that you've spent a long time without good company, but now you have someone to enjoy camradarie with for a change.

You saw some ads for racing and fighting events in the lower section, and neil is a ship-builder by trade, he could probably talk endlessly on the complexities of the engineering behind a ship.

You type in his contact number into your command console and wait for a response.

"Hello this is Neil. Might I ask who this is?" Neil intones neutrally. You aren't surprised at his professional tone it's likely he may get annoying calls from his underlings even while on vacation.

"Neil it's Rickert Volgunsen, I met you at the Atlas club several weeks ago. We exchanged information."

Neil's tone immediately changes the moment you begin speaking

"Oh yeah I remember, I tried calling, but there was no response, I was thinking you gave me a dummy number."

"Oh no, I was just out of system on some business I just got back in fact, I called to ask if you were available."

Neil chuckles and you can here some other laughter from the background, his family you imagine.

"No problem, I know exactly how that feels. Yes I am free right now, were you planning on going to socialize?"

(1/2)
>>
>>2439320
You return Neil's chuckle before answering "yes in fact I was planning on going to the lower section and attending some of the events. They have a plethora of cage fighting matches, a jet bike race, and the workshops are open to the public, I thought that maybe your love of titan dueling extended to some other competetive sports."

You hear Neil's laughter turn to guffaw's and before you say anything he replies

"Oh man I knew I had a good felling about you. That sounds like a six pack of fun. Do you have anyone coming along?"

You reply that you do not, You aren't familiar with anyone at Polaris, as you arrived here for the first time to attend the tournament.

"Well do you mind if I bring some of my friends and family along? My sister, and a couple of my work buddies were all looking for something to do until the next match, is that okay?"

>Do you allow Neil to bring his guests along?
Yes or No

After giving your answer you provide Neil with the information on where you'll meet and set up the time.

"See you Rickert."

"The same Neil."

You recline slightly as after you finish your social call. It's been a while since you were around ordinary people, even longer since you were just socializing rather than working.

This will be fun you think.

Did a little looking into Neil. I bet he's making a fortune off the Titan fights, what with people flowing through the station.
>>
Once you reach the appointed place to meet Neil you notice that he and his guests are already present. As you approach you get a better look at neil's company. There are two men and 1 woman with him. You notice that the woman looks similar to neil although she looks considerably younger. Whether that meant she was actually younger than Neil is up in the air. One thing you don't appreaciate about this modern society is that the apparent age of any person is more or less optional. Some in their 100s could still look like they are in their 30s while someone else could look their age. You kept the scars on your specifically so that others would get the impression that you weren't some young man.

The two men didn't look like Neil, but both were of medium height and had the kind of softness that comes with middle age and soft living. They shared the greyed hair with neil, but both men are decidedly plain, no remarkable features, but no decidedly ugly or exagerrated features. They seemed to be the same age, seemed being the operative word, but if you had to guess they were around the same age as Neil, somwhere in their eighties with a moderate effort to slow their aging. These must be Neil's business associates

The woman then must be Neil's sister, as they share the same slight nose and genial features. You wonder if Neil shares the light blonde hair she does, but then again that might not be her natural hair color. She's pretty though and tall for a woman, being roughly the same height as her brother. Both her and Neil reach above the middle of your chest.

You extend your hand to shake Neil's once you are within reach.

"Glad to see you made it Rickert, right on time."

You nod and once you have the chance you shake hands with all 3 of Neil's companions then introduce yourself.

"Hello my name is Rickert Volgunsen, I'm an associate of neil's, I'm pleased to make your acquaintance."

The two men you learn are Neil's chief business partners, Lawrence Fischman, and Samuel Maudlin who are also on vacation with their families.

"You could say this is a company retreat. Hehehehe." Both men chortle at the rather lame joke, but otherwise seem to be friendly men.

His sister seems friendly as well which is a pleasant surprise, as women have never been especially comfortable around you. Except women who were also augmented, as they obviously wouldn't be as intimidated by your great stature.

"I'm pleased to meet you Mr.Volgunsen, my brother has told me that you both had good time obssessing over the tournament." She smiles pleasantly, whether due to genuine mirth or mere politness you aren't sure.

Your introduction settled you break out the itinerary you had prepared.

"I have already found out what events are happening today, The first if the jet bike race in one of the enclosed tracks."

Neil and his companions node in agreement.

"Sounds good big man, lead the way" Neil and co. step in behind you as you navigate the party to the race track.

Once enter the complex you turn to inform your companions of your plans.

"If it's alright with you all I registered to particpate in one of the races, only one though and there are three scheduled, but I have a jet bike of my own and I wnated to try my luck a little just wanted to inform you ahead of time."

Neil and co seem a little surprised by you sudden news, but they seem to approve.

Neil slaps you on the back. "Well that's interesting, and I don't mind at all infact it pretty interesting, I never asked you what your job was? Are you a hotshot racer or something?

You smile, but shake your head "No but I enjoyed racing when I was younger."

Neil turns to his friends. "You okay with this?"

Both Lawrence and Samuel shrug "I'm fine with it." "I don't know any of the racers here so it gives me someone to cheer for."

Neil's sister smiles softly and nods. "I don't mind, in fact it's pretty interesting. I mean controlling a het bike in race is pretty dangerous. Do you think you'll win?"

You scratch you chin in mock thought before answering "No, it's been a fairly long time since I've raced anyone, but I still practice so I'll be okay.

You tell your new friends that you'll meet them after your race is finished and hand them their seat tickets.

Not long afterward you get on your jet bike and get ready to take off.

>My mistake earlier I forgot to tell you what Neil's sisters name was. It's Sarah

>race is up next.
>>
>You suit up and get on yur bike and are placed onto a platform that will raise onto the track

The platform your bike rests on slowly reaches its peak, revealing the enclosed track. The building is massive in size, with miles of metallic track, jumps, and as you look closely changing path ways.

The chamber is miles wide and close to a mile tall, a truely grand chamber. Huge light illuminate the chamber and reveal the floating drones holding cameras positioning themselves behind you and each racer. The gleaming metal of the path glittering due to the building sized lights above.

You go through one more check, your elongated bike's thrusters flaring and repuslor jets humming mightily to keep you afloat.

This bike was a gift from a dear friend who passed a long time ago, but the paint job he gave it remains. You made sure of that. Bright yellow and black, the front of the bike painted in the likeness of a wolf. The "Apex Predator" In Big scarlet letters along the side. It's never failed you even when you used to ride it into battle on occasion, and you doubt it will fail now.

The starting light begin to tick down until the great horn blares.

IT BEGINS

Music from a bygone era blares from the chambers sound speakers

The roar of your bike's engine sends shivers up your spine as the sudden acceleration pulls and presses upon you, you can fell blood trying to rush down ward as you climb up the track and move toward a massive jump.

The other racers Begin to jockey for positions and just as the track begins to narrow you nudge you way into the center of the pack. The heavy rumbling of a dozen engines makes thinking difficult, plus the forces on your body make reacting difficult even with your protective suit.

As you continue to climb the track you reach the precipice right before an empty gap. You flare you thrusters just as you hit the edge and sail thorugh thair taking the opportunity to move ahead of one of other racers, throttling you engine just enough to overcome him while you're both in the air. You don't look to see if any racers missed the jump and have to climb back to join the rest of the pack.

You continue to gain speed and soon you are on a field of uneven metal ground. Hapazard metal hills and ditches fill you path and despite your efforts you overshoot one of the hills and lose partial control of you bike, you begin spinning furiously before you can straighten out and get back on track.

You grip the throttle of you bike with all you might and prepare to sling shot your way back into the pack. Dipping behind on the racers right before gunning the engine with all of your might just as you arrive at a straight stretch.

Your gambit works and you rocket passed several racers to move toward the front of the pack somewhere near fourth closely following and being followed by other racers.

The intense force on your body when you turn into steep curve toward a bare wall is enough to make even your augmented bones creak, but despite your speed your attempt at running along the wall fails, and you must take the time to move to the main track again from below. Weaving passed the others who failed you climb back onto the track, sliding in front of another and tearing up ground toward more rough terrain.

You throw any attempt at navigating through or around the uneven metal field and instead gun your bike and flare your repsulsors as hard as possible just as you reach on of the highest metal hills. You leap to thefront of the pack and remain in complete control side sliding before correcting yourself.

You don't let up on the throttle for a second and while the increasing g-force pains you the other racers cannot keep up. Your creaking bones feel like they might break just as your bike crosses the finish line.

Once you slow to a reasonable speed you take the time to wave to the crowd. Adulating in their cheers and applause. The, you turn into the exit pathway, and stop before slumping over you bike in exhaustion. You look at your spedometer, 530mph. Geeze you were pushing even your endurance with that kind of speed.

Satisfied with your own performance you retire and put up your bike and soon enough you join Neil and co.

"Hell yeah Rickert!" Neil immediately jumps up and chest bumps you as soon as you arrive.

"Holy shit man that was awesome! You gotta show me some of this moves! I gotta bike too, but damn!"

Before Neil can bombard you with questions Sarah waves down her brother down and leads you to your seat.

"Sorry about that, but Neil likes to live the life of adrenaline junkie vicariously. He has all kinds of extreme sports and combat gear at home, but he never really uses them."

Lawrence and Samuel both nod their approval, but thankfully don't decide to remain seated.

Samuel decides to speak up.
"When you said you were gonna race, I just thought you were doing for fun and that winning it wasn't your intention, but I must say I'm impressed. You went through that course like you memorized it. You told Neil you weren't a bike jockey, but where did you learn to ride like that."

"I used a jet bike occasionally when I was in the army. I was heavy infantry during the Nemean gulf conflict. If you want to avoid getting blasted it was didge or die"

You see Lawrence pale visibly at the reference to your service record.

"Dear god above you were in that war?" Lawrence covers his mouth before he gives another look over.

Samuel looks perturbed at your answer as well. before you can say anything he interjects.
"I'm sorry if I brought anything up mr. Volgunsen, just... you have my condolences for any family or friends you may have lost."

The sentiment you would say isn't heartwarming but you appreciate that both he and lawrence understand how much of a cluster fuck the whole war was. 10 years of complete shit for absolutely nothing. His expression of horror summed it up good.

"No problem, I made my pace with what happened a long time ago."

Sarah breaks up the sudden mood shift, by handing you some food.

"We got some concessions earlier, please help yourself since you bought these seats."

Neil coughs slightly before pointing back to the track.

"Next race is starting you want to take a guess on who will win?"

A small smile appears on your face. It seems that Neil and his friends are okay people. Been a long time since you were around anyone who could show concern.

"I would like that."

This is better than the golden trophy or medal I was expecting.
So I guess that means the power armor fisticuffs is next on the list?
>>
>>2441592
Yeah, You'll get an option to participate in the power armor brawl as well. It's a free for all fight with light guns set to lock up the armor when a certain damage threshold is reached. Its not lethal and the armor pretty much makes the wearer safe from any real harm. Rickert remembers that this was how they trained to first use power armor in battle. Think of airsoft or war games, but the technology is advanced enough that it pretty much perfectly simulates combat.

If you win the match you'll get a trait for rickert that allows you to use a Bo3 for ranged attacks instead of Bo2

I will say though, while rickert is a greenhorn titan pilot despite his recent success, he is a disgustingly competent soldier. He made the fortune needed to build Algol by being one of the best and most brutal mercenary generals in the galaxy over the course of nearly 30 years.
>>
>>2442849
Sounds like we might win then.
>>
You arrive at the combat arena by tram, and now that you get a look at the building it's almost breathtaking. The exterior of the building is wrought like a relief carving. The walls are lined with scenes of battles and adventure, warriors from ancient eras and beasts fighting and tearing into each other. Larger more detailed figures dominate large sections, no doubt depictions of ancient heroes and gods doing battle. Different areas were highlighted with different metals, like bronze and black steel. Really it was quite impressive. It was definetly a better piece of art than the gaudy decoration on Hector. So much much precious metal was gilded onto the titans exterior it made the machine look like some misshapen golden and platinum turd.

"You recognize anything on that fancy carving?" Neil nudges you in the ribs.

"No unfortunately, I never really put any effort into learning ancient history or ancient warrior cultures, I had a friend though in the army who always has some line or quote from some soldier or hero when he needed some snappy one liner."

Sarah snickers slightly from behind you.

"What was his best line?"

You struggle to recall, Kazuo was always spouting an old saying or piece of soldierly wisdom from old dead warrior that you tuned it out after a while.

"The one that I always liked was one I can't remember, but I remember it was by a general to his soldiers before a large battle."

Sarah shrugs "That's okay, I imagine that was a long time ago."

You grimace a little recalling some of the memories you had of the nemean gulf.

"It's never long enough. I'm glad I only need to sleep an hour or so a day or else I would be seeing it all the time in my dreams and that's something I can live without."

Neil coughs and gets your attention once again.

"You plan on doing a match here too, I'm a little curious as to how much you remember of kicking ass."

You laughter is loud enough to get the attention of the crowd around you also moving toward the arena.

After having a good long laugh you stop enough to answer Neil's question.

"Don't worry I signed up for a match and I remember plenty on how kick ass."

Your laugh degrades into a rumbling chuckle as you apprach the gate. You pass the second round of tickets to your friends before, departing once more to parepare.

"Watch for me I'll be the one with the black and red skull theme."

Before Neil or any of the others can respond you disappear through the crowd.

You have to remember to refrain from laughing so hard next time, you think you may have scared some small children nearby, but it's almost too funny to not laugh.

You've fought from one edge of space to the other, and between your stint during the war and every little shooting conflict since then you've accumulated tens of thousands of hours of combat experience. There hasn't been any situation you ever been in and no enemy you haven't fought save titans and kaiju until recently. The only reason you didn't want to join every match was because it would probably be a little too easy for your tastes.

As you enter the elevator to the arming chambers you contemplate what pieces of gear you should use.

>You arrive beneath the arena and get suited up.

It's been far too long since you've donned your armor. The feed from your helmet is as crisp and high definition as always. Looking down at your armament you look at your Particle cannon and see the motto of your former unit.

"Come you Dogs do you want to live forever!"

That was the quote you forgot. Its been too long since you took up your old arms, but the construction of Algol took up much of your time, and settling your mercenary affairs took up the rest of that time.

Stretching your fleshly and mechanical muscles, the HUD in your helmet performs the last of the warm up routines. All lights green, systems nominal.

You look up at the timer above you. 5 minutes until your little box opens and all hell breaks loose.

Taking up your axe in your dominant hand you twirl it experimentally. The same as always.

"Alright let's see what on the menu today."

The timer dings an then a blaring horn sounds. The box opens and the battle begins.

>appropriate music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjXou-PI8dI

The thrusters on your back and legs surge with irresistable force. You are propelled like a bullet across the arena bounding off armored barriers and walkways to the highest point in the arena with any cover.

Need to survey the battlefield, take note of the conditions, indentify all hostile targets then take appropriate action

The arena is a mashup of many platforms and filled with armored cover. You see that many of the other competitors have hunkered down in their own pieces of cover.

Not the smartest moves. Few have decided to break for higher ground, but even with the threat of being shot at while out in the open, hunkering down while fighting other power armor equipped enemies is a rookie mistake. They can usually move fast enough that they can cover the gap if they attack from a odd angle, or if they just jump from cover to cover. The other problem is that eventually someone will just throw ordinance or focus fire at your position. Armor is good overall protection, but taking a full barrage isn't good for your long term health.

You gotta keep moving, sedentary combat is for the regular ground pounders. Too many weapons on a suit can chew up cover, you best shot is to remain mobile. You had already switched spots halfway through your analysis in fact.

Your options on foo are slightly different then when using a titan.

When you decide on how many target to hit, you'll get these options.

>Strafe your opponents (fire your ranged weapons and dodge incoming fire)

>Close to melee (put away your primary gun and start swinging your axe and punching, while avoiding the same)

>Use ordinance (roll to see how many you damage or are affected by the ordinance affect)

When you fire your ranged weapons for the first time you'll see if you hit and I'll have the totals for damage and from there you can pick which ones to focus on. The weapons with multi target fire is to help with the larger masses of enemies

The arena has probably about 30 or so other fighters than yourself, several are in smaller fire fights in isolated pockets, but you notice that 10 are trading potshots in close proximity. All nice and exposed from your perch.

Let's see if any of these armored toddlers have some teeth.

You leap from your perch and jet between cover avoiding lazy shots aimed from a handful of combatants not engaged yet.

When you get with range you take a jump and flare your thrusyers. You soar into a arc as you climb and then flare your jet again to change direction once the first wave of fire comes.

You go their attention and they all (stupidly) focus on you. This is a dangerous maneuver but you have the advantage of being able to dive into any cover in asecond and with your heavy armor and shields you can tank the few shots that can get through.

You fire all of your weapons at once, the missiles from your shoulder homing on 3 lighter suits, before you take a sharp dip toward the ground, rushing across the metal surface catching another light suit near the neck, the nova like burst from your cannon catches one of the heavier suits in then staggering the armored fighter.

In probably less than 10 seconds you engage strike and fall back into cover dashing and keeping out of sight.

Surprisingly none of the other fighters break from the firefight. They hunker down and continue to take oppurtunity shots when able.

Oh dear god, you hope they are rookies, because this shit would get you killed in any scenario let alone one where you're alone with no backup and everyone nearby wants to get a piece of you.

Never stop moving, try your best to break line of sight, attack from where they aren't looking, you got the speed to do it dammit.

Dear god you sound like your old NCO.

Oh well what do now?

Alright, 10 target several are already wounded and their attention isn't chiefly on you, and they haven't bothered to move from their previous position.

Prime targets for some ordinance.

You jump slightly and toss one of the thermo flash bombs you brought in. The light it emits is powerful enough to overcome the flash dampening on most armors.

Your nasty surprise sail through the air until it is in the center of the fire fight before it goes off You duck behind cover and rocket toward you target.

The poor bastards are disoriented and haven't moved , although 2 seem to have avoided being temporarily blinded and take shots at you. Not that they come close to hitting you. Juking between their fire you indentify those you hit before and open up with your missile launcher and laser gauntlet. The barrage of fire is enough to take out 3 of the lighter suits and the last looks like he's on his last legs.

excellent.

The apprent threat has been reduced and now most of your adversaries are handicapped.

The light on your hud tells you that you cannon is charged once more. Also excellent.

Time to press you advantage.

Rickert in a nutshell
https://youtu.be/B3lsJmwNO40
>>
Charging across the battlefield you strafe between cover and hop over any metal barrier until you come upon two of the disoriented combatants.

You lunge and grab one by the ankle, the other noticies you quickly enough he throttles his own jets and gets the hell out of dodge.

No time to consider him he's fleeing and you have to keep moving.

You leap over one of the barriers to attack another blinded fighter.

You swing the lighter suit over head and strike the other like a nail. You follow up with a horizontal sweep then release your now knocked out hammer. The fighter you hit is sent flying.

Taking to the skies once again you survey the current postioning of your foes then act.

Before they can focus on you, the missiles on your shoulder fire tightly at the upper half of their suits. Three targets immediately go flying, one you vaguely notice is knocked out.

Descending upon your foes, two of them have incidentally bumped into each other, one does not seem to be blinded while the other is.

You land behind them while they're both occupied and level your cannon at them. With one trigger pull one is completely blown away cartwheeling through the air smoking slightly and the other tumbles away in a heap, still functioning.

Just as one final target attempts to finally disengage you nail him with a charged shot from your laser gauntlet.

from 6 to 4 and all are wounded.

This reminds you of that one time you ambushed that group of greenhorn super soldiers at Larn's crag nearly 40 years ago.

With your enemies in disarray and all hobbled this battle semms to be coming to an end.

17+9=26
>9 has 50-26=24HP
>1 has 64-17=47HP
>2 has 70-9=61HP

all three decide that the situation is hopeless considering you haven't even taken any damage.

They all tap.

You win the match with 10 points for defeating 10 opponents all by yourself.

Nice

Chasing after the skittering form of the guy you sent tumbling from your cannon shot. You grip his ankles and take flight once more.

From the your heightened position, you see that the guy who tried to run away and the last remaining target are just close enough that you can swing at them with your improvised club.

"You have got to be fuckin- ah!" The later of the two combatents below gets slammed followed closely by the other.

You discard the warrior in your grasp and prepare to follow up, when all three speak up.

"Fuck this man I give up." The guy you just used a club lift both hands up in surrender.

"Yup, I'm done. Tapping out." The second slaps the groud three times.

"Fuck this I'm outta here, you win asshole. Next time you're here do you mind bringing some lube next time?"

Your final opponent waves you off and sluggishly begins moving toward the exit.

Riiiiiinnnnnnngggggg.

Times up.

Looking around the arena the remaining competitors begin shuffling toward the exit, the same as your beaten foes. Alright that was fun, not very difficult but fun.

By the time you return to your friends, they clap the moment you draw near.

"Jesus man, I know this is a competition, but seriously I think you may have made one of this guys cry."

Samuel chides you, before lawrence interjects.

"I think it was after you point blanked that one guy and he flew up in the air then knocked out some other guy by accident on his way down. I mean it was almost cruel, but it was impressive"

Sarah looks dumbfounded, but just before she says something she stops.

"I was going to say something else, but at this point I'll just say I'm impressed."

Neil just takes a drink he must have gotten from concessions and nods.

You smile and sit beside you friends and watch the next match together, adding your commentary on the action.

"That guy right there has the right idea." You point to one of the fighters zipping back and forth across the arena avoiding the larger groups and taking down unaware single targets.

"He's keeping mobile and seizes the initiative. He moves strikes, and then moves on when he's down. The guys I went up against hunkered down and pretty much gave up control of the nattle to me. I called every shot and they had no choice but react. Poorly react."

Neil burps and gives a thumbs up.

"So is that a standard tactic, day one boot camp stuff?"

"Yeah pretty much, most of these guys act like they are regular ground pounders, when you just have your legs to move around, it's better to fight conservatively and be cautious. When your opponent has any significant cover and has power armor, you either maintain constant mobility and situational flexibility or you get fucked."

"Like those guys you beat up."

You grin and nod.

Your 3 other companions examine the arena casually. Sarah in fac has her face in her holo bracer.

"the arena roster says that most of the entrees are amateurs, few military types eem to compete."

You raise an eyebrow at that. Weird. You'll need to come back when better opponents are available.

Neil looks at his holobracer's clock and announces

"Match is almost over and it's getting late. You guys wanna get dinner after this? Since our friend Rickert was kind enough to buy our tickets for everything, I'll be buying. Do you mind?"

"Hope you brought plenty of credits, Feeding me isn't cheap." You pat your belly and let out a tangible stomach gurgle.

"Yeah, yeah I saw that plate you ordered at the club, geez I know your big, but some one must have hunted that bird you ate with a friggin titan man."

Your laugh once again surprises everyone nearby. You could get used to spending your days like this.

>You return home later after spending the evening with Neil and co.
>Relationship with Neil strengthened
>You are now buddies with Neil.

Next up is the second match of the tournament.
