ASOIAF Reincarnation: A Male Powder Fantasy – Thread 13

Character Sheet: https://pastebin.com/RsQUNkkx
Future Updates and Shitposts: https://discord.gg/H4z8wcy
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=powder+fantasy

7th Month of 287 AC, Casterly Rock, Westerlands
Powder Storage – 60 Cartridges – 95530 shots worth of blackpowder
Personal Funds – 107 Gold Dragons
Armament – Pair of Flintlock Pistols, Imperial Sabre
Protection – Commissar's Uniform with a Proofed Breastplate

On the Last thread you negotiated a shipping deal with The Brotherhood of Charitable Traders, hauling their cargo for their affiliates at Lannisport for an estimated 75 Gold payout. Of course, a decent portion of the cargo was perishable goods, which if they ended up degrading due to slow shipping, would likely offer less to no payout for that portion.

You also partook in your elder brother's adventures in Oldtown as he and your parents stumbled their way to your ship project before finally finding your character at the mansion of Archmaester Ruger, who was more than eager to show off the printing press which you had made for him.

After a pleasant evening with family and friends, the unveiling ceremony of your ship awaited the following day, during which Archmaester Ruger paraded the handiwork which had earned him his title and you decided to show everyone exactly why your ship was to be called 'The Long Night'.

You had your marines display their discipline and fill the skies with musketfire by having them fire three shots each before taking off on your ship and displaying a cannon broadside on a simple wooden raft that was prepared beforehand. There would be no one in Oldtown after that day that didn't hear of the event and no doubt rumours would reach much further than that soon enough.

The Trip to Lannisport was smooth sailing. No problems in either weather or navigation, your vessel reaching to it's destination within the same week it left. During this voyage, you ended up telling your parents of the true purpose of the vessel. Earning Glory against the coming war against the Ironborn, which they reacted skeptically towards.

Upon reaching Lannisport, you met with one of Tywin's brothers: Gerion Lannister. The Man had apparently received a mistaken report about your vessel, which had referred it as a foreign craft sailing from the direction of the Sunset sea.

After clearing the little misunderstanding, he decided to promptly buy all the oranges off you after deeming them of good enough quality to serve at the Court. This unexpected transaction caused you a bit of extra work as you had to deliver the compensation to the guild's affiliates for untransported goods, but they received it well as it was less work for them to move the goods. There even was couple of extra dragons left in your pocket afterwards from the generous payment made by the Lannister patron.

After the Cargo was checked and the lads began to unload it, you decided that it would be polite to make Lord Tywin aware of you and your family's presence in his realm. Your parents however weren't too keen on chatting up with the Lannisters. Understandable considering that but a few short years before they had been on opposing sides of a war.

You on the other hand took no part in that war, so it's unlikely they'd be interested in humiliating you due to some petty ancestral spite between Westerlands and Reach.

After making way up the Rock, delivering customary giftbasket to the Lord of the Realm you were visiting, you ended up meeting Lord Tywin's Steward, one Maester called Warne. He had apparently heard of you from his colleagues and the upheaval you caused by forging a Maester's chain before you were 20 and having several degrees of Mastery within the area of Smithing.

The Maester offered you one of the books he had copied in exchange for helping him further his studies in the area of blacksmithing for a few days. You ended up accepting this arrangement and chose a book on Masonry as payment.

That, however is a job for tomorrow.
>>
Right now, you're reading the said masonry book in the courtyard, waiting for the dinner with the Lannister household as the guards did their practice matches on the background.

It was a ponderous read, though not a particularly long book. You could quite easily read through it once or twice in a day or two and not remember a single word of it afterwards. It was clearly written with the intention that the person in question must know the questions what to ask and the book would help provide answers to such questions.

Masonry you guess, is just one of those things that you can only get good at by actually doing it. Still, you've got somewhat a decent grasp of the subject thanks to your time in the Citadel. It's not as if they didn't make you mix your own mortars there before. This book tends to lend more information on the various materials on the soil which can be used towards that end as well as some of the favored construction methods when using such materials.

Varieties of brick and stone are mentioned in great detail as well as well as preferred methods and tools for cutting certain types of stone.

As you were reading the book, you were soon interrupted by the blonde maid whom had shown you your room before.

"Ser Arthur, the dinner is soon ready. If you'd like to change into something more... appropriate."
You lift your eyes from the pages and close the book.
"Is there something wrong with the way I'm dressed?"
"It's a tad... well, untraditional if you don't mind me saying."
"My change clothes are in the ship I'm afraid."
"House Lannister will borrow you some clothes for the day if you'd like Ser Arthur. This is not the first time someone forgot their travel chest down to Lannisport and it shan't be last."

>"I appreciate the offer, but no thank you." (Leave behind the hat, the coat and your weapons.)

> One does not simply quit being a Commissar

[1/2]

You are past giving a fuck at this point.
You're almost 80 years old, died twice, you've got cannons on the beach, you're cosplaying as an Imperial Commissar in Westeros whilst possibly being some sort of immortal.
Caring about the sensibilities of someone with the fashion sense from the dark ages?
Please.
"I appreciate the offer, but I'm good."
"Are certain? It would be no trouble at all."
"Quite. One should wear his best clothes when meeting a Lord."
"If you say so, Ser Tallon."
"I do say so."
Fucking Mayflies I swear.

Leaving your your hat, coat, breastplate and weapons behind in your room, you were guided to the dinner hall and seated with the other guests that were staying in the castle, all of them rather plainly dressed by comparison to your flamboyant and sharp uniform.

You notice that the tables were filled with the fruit Gerion had bought from your ship pre-emptively. You did also notice some goods you had given to the guild as well had found their way to the table as well as great quantities of local goods.
Lannisters from the looks of it were very well fed.

Closer to the now empty Lord's seat there were Lord Tywin's immediate family on his right side, his brothers, an empty seat and then finally his extended family which was a good dozen blondes strong with no doubt more dining down in Lannisport.
On his left side sat his advisors, such as the Steward you had met before along with several other Maesters. Tywin seems to prefer learned company it seems.

Hmm... it seems that Tyrion is absent.
>>
[2/2]

The Dinner begun as Tywin broke the first bread, after which beer and wine flowed whilst the gentry in attendance began to help themselves to the spread on the table.

Shortly after you had filled your plate and had a taste of the food and the drink, the blonde servantgirl came to fetch you. "Ser Arthur? Lord Tywin would speak to you."
You leave your plate and head up to the Lord's seat as the people in attendance watched you walk past them in your unusual attire
"I'm told you wished to speak to me my Lord?"

He lifts his eyes from his food and reclines in a dour manner as he takes a look at you. His face and voice both having that 'stiff upper lip' thing going on which made it difficult to tell his disposition towards you.
Not that you really cared as long as it weren't hostile.

"I'm told we've you to thank for these oranges as for the gift crate which my brother deigned fit to seize for himself. What is your business in my realm?"

"Business and Pleasure Lord Tywin.
The Maiden Voyage of my new ship, doing a test run for the Brotherhood of Charitable Traders on whether it's feasible to ship fruit here, transporting passengers as well as giving Maester Warne some help with earning more links."

"Maester Warne, does he speak truly?"
"Yes Lord Tywin. Arthur Tallon was a known genius in the Citadel, being the youngest to earn as many links as he did, achieving no small degree mastery in the art of smithing during that time. He has agreed to spend few days to help me with my studies."

"Very well then. I consider your duty to make your presence known done. You and your passengers have safe passage in my realm."

"Thank you Lord Tywin."
His Brother Gerion decides to speak out
"Aren't you going to ask him what is a Blacksmith of his caliber doing shipping oranges."
Tywin gives a stern look at his brother as he slowly turns his head. Geriom raises his hands with food still stuck on the fork he was holding with a pretense of innocence on his face.

The Maester speaks out.
"I am familiar with this tale. Supposedly he won a great deal of money during the Tourney of Harrenhal along with his knighthood and used this money to design and build a ship with the aid of the Conclave."
"Quite an accomplished orange merchant isn't he?"

Tywin looks at you
"Did the Maester speak true?"
"There were no lies in the telling. I won a great deal of money and invested it on a ship which was built with the aid of the Citadel."
He looks at you as if measuring
"Are you interested in joining the Lannister fleet perhaps?"

> "No."
> "I was honestly thinking of joining the Royal navy later down the line."
> "Depends on the pay."

I risked my tourney winnings on my rather good performance on betting who would win. I won the bet.

Now I am betting my time at the citadel and the proceeds of said winnings that I have the best ship on the seas.

You probably have a good eye for these things lord Tywin, but first I must prove to myself and the world that my creation is the best.

[1/2]

"I do not intend to tie myself to any lord until I accumulate enough accomplishments that Landed titles are brought to the table."

Tywin gives you that look with slightly narrowed eyes which leaves you uncertain whether or not he's talking to you with some hidden contempt on his voice, talking down to you or something else.

"And you think working for my fleet is beneath you?"
"What I think is that I'm far more likely to find greater opportunities by seeking those who need me, rather than those who'd simply wield of me, even if such people are of lower status."

He keeps looking at you and measuring you with his eyes, trying to do that thing which makes the person in question uncomfortable by pressuring them with a stern gaze.

"I see. You may return to your table Ser Arthur. Perhaps we shall discuss of this matter again at a later date."
After saying that, he stops acknowledging your existence and moves straight to enjoying his dinner.

You give him a bow and return to the table as the other guests were all staring at you like you had grown a second head, but at the same time they were avoiding eye contact with you.

Yea, have a good look you cunts. See if I care. Not like I'm planning to live here.

After enjoying a good meal you excused yourself and went out to enjoy the evening sky, watching the stars in the sky pop up whilst the moon hung from the sky in it's full luminescence.

Lanterns were being lit by the guards to illuminate the castle for the night. As your eyes scanned the surroundings in the courtyard, you saw the distinct figure of Gerion Lannister standing on top of the wall, pissing down to the sea whilst singing his own version of 'The Rains of Castamere'.

Deciding not to involve yourself with the antics of the man, you went back to your room and went to get some sleep.

Come morning Maester Warne came to sit next to you at the breakfast.

"I've reserved the use of the forge for two days with Lord Tywin's permission. Speaking of whom, you certainly left an... impression on him yesterday."
"Knights are supposed to speak truthfully. If Lord Tywin took offense in me being transparent with him, I shall apologize for such slights as is needed."
"He wasn't offended, but he still considered you a bit uh... brazen."
"Waiting for opportunities to be granted to you is foolish when one has the means to take initiative and seek them out. There are Seven Kingdoms and hundreds of lords, many of which are in deep trouble."
"Yes, I think I can see what you're saying. You were squired by a Questing Knight yourself weren't you? Ser Heronford was it? Figures you wouldn't be one to wait around."
"You heard news of him?"
"Not much save that he apparently has a prospering fighting school in the Capital nowadays."
"I'll be damned. He's moved up in the world. Changing the subject though, what manner of things did you actually need help with in terms of the smithin?"
"Not much, I need to observe the technique of various types of tempering which our local smith rarely uses. I need to see for my own eyes the sort of color in the flames as well as feel the temperature."
"Alright then. Haven't exactly tried teaching this stuff before, but I'll have a stab at it."

[1/2]

You spend the day with working the forge, giving him examples on how each thing he read about is done in real life as he took notes. Various Lannisters stopped to see what was going on before moving on, some staying lomger than others.
Even Tywin Lannister took a judgemental look of your work when passing by.

"See the vibrant purple color? That's what you're going for. This is the sort of stuff you go to for when making stone-carving tools. Now you try with your piece."

The Maester tries his best to replicate what you just did, but botches it several times, either making the forge too hot or too cold each time or simply botching up the last steps when cooling.

"It is very difficult to get it just right. It seems even with your aid only about one in third manages to get the color to appear properly."
"The key is that you now know what you're going for. I've developed an eye for these things, but without a better forge, you just need to practice until you get used to doing it just right."

"The Person who taught you must have been quite a smith indeed. What was his name? Perhaps I could seek him out for further advice in the future."

"Afraid you'd be looking for a long time. I'm self-taught Maester Warne. What I didn't learn in the Citadel I picked on the road by myself."
He looks at you as if not believing a word you just said.

"Forgive, but I do find that a bit hard to believe. Smithing is after all an area of study where experience is key."
You pat him on the back
"Consider yourself forgiven then Maester Warne. I've always found myself to have a great affinity with working metal. It's just one of those things you know? Like how some people ride horses really well, but I've never been too fond of them."

He looks at you a bit oddly
"If you insist, I shan't pry further."
"Good man. Think you'll be fine for the day if I'll make you a rainbow with different tempers as reference material?"
"Yes, I think I've learned quite a lot from this exercise. I'll see if I can't come up with questions for tomorrow, but now I think I just need more practice."
>>
[2/2]

After making him several bars tempered with various temperatures on the forge as a guideline, you left the Maester to his own devices and went off to enjoy some sandwiches you told the servantgirl to make for you earlier whilst reading the book under a nice tree in the small garden they had on the Rock.

"Enjoying your book Ser Arthur?"
You looked upwards and saw a man clad in armor.
"Something to do I suppose. How may I help you... I presume you're a Ser?"
"Ser Tygett Lannister"
You close your book and stand up, dusting yourself off.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance Ser Tygett."
He shakes your hand firmly
"What you said out there yesterday resonated with me. Seeking out opportunity rather than waiting it to be handed out to you. I should have done that as well. Lethargy in peaceful service is no way for a knight to live."
"I'm glad you approve then."
"Oh, I most certainly do. I say you have the right attitude in life. Fuck you wasting your best years living in someone else's shadow. Fuck working to build someone else's legacy with nothing of your own to show for it in the end."
He pulls out a wine skin and drinks from it
"Want a drink?"
"What's in it?"
"Blueberry wine from a bit further North."
"Don't mind if I do."

The taste was sweet and very fruity. It didn't feel particularly strong. You'd rate it as a closer to a nice refreshment than something to get drunk on.

"It's good. So am I to take it this was a purely social call?"
"Keep it, and no. Not entirely there's something I've recently been tasked handling. You're heading back to Oldtown soon. Correct?"
"That is correct."
"I've been tasked to handle one of Gerion's bastards again by my illustrious Lord Brother."
"So, you want me to take him to the Citadel to be a Maester?"
"That was in my mind, yes. I need someone to get him and the mother settled in Oldtown. I hear that you're rather well connected with the Conclave."

"There's also another alternative. I could take him aboard my ship, teach him to be a sailor and groom him to be a captain. When he's of age, you'll get him a ship of his own. Good Captains tend to make good coin."
"And bad Captains tend to end up pirates and smugglers. Considering that bastards tend to be become crooked by nature and this is Gerion's bastard, I believe it's best not to tempt fate."
"As you wish. Oldtown it is then. Come to think of it, I do have some ideas for the lodgings.
I still have my old workshop around there with a small forge built into it. I used it myself while studying. It's near the market and within an hour's distance of the Citadel. I don't use the place much anymore and it could serve as lodgings and livelyhood for the bastard and his mother if you'd like to buy it from me."
He nods his head
"An honorable and a decent living being a blacksmith should the boy turn out not too studious. Knowing Gerion, it could end up either way so that sounds like a fine option for the bastard. I also think it preferable that the mother makes life through honest living, rather than mooching the charity of our house. I'd hear more of this proposition."

You start to try and sell him on the idea of buying your workshop.

>20 Pretty dang good

You kept singing praises of the place, saying how the mother could rent the lower portion to some local businesses for extra coin until the boy came of age and make an honest living that way. You even drew him a small draft of the floor plan as well as a map of the region. You could do that now thanks to the time you spent in your masonry and map studies.
The More you spoke to him about it, the more he seemed to be convinced that the deal you were offering him was a good one for him.

"Enough. You convinced me already, how much?"
"How does 70 Gold sound?"
He mulls it in his head a bit once more. Tempted, but still thinking it over.
"Bit steep isn't it? How about 60"
"How about we split the difference? 65 and I'll throw in the passage in for free."
"Fine, I suppose that sounds about right for a forge in such a good location."
"Shake on it?"
He shakes your hand. Deal done. 25 gold profit on a real estate deal. That's fairly good coin.
"See you at the dinner then?"
"Yes. I'll notify the bastard's mother and let my brother know the arrangements have been made."
"Good, pleasure doing business with you."

After your prompt deal with the Lannister man, you went to check on Maester Warne for a last time to see if he needed some more advice with the forge before calling it a day.
You spent some time loitering around the small castle town before dinner was done.

The evening was spent rather quietly with nothing of note happening. Come tomorrow you gave some final advice to Maester Warne on improving his skills before grabbing your men and riding back to your ship to see how the work was progressing.

"Bodrin how has work gone in my absence?"
"As we predicted, after unloading the perishables, they cut down on the manpower, driving the work nearly to a standstill. I took the liberty to order some of the lads to help moving the crates to their warehouse. We've dealt with these sort of issues before Ser so we could handle it on our own."
"Excellent work. Any other news?"
"One of the passengers got arrested for drunken brawling, but we managed to sort that one out with the help of your parents. We also received a messenger from House Lannister of a passenger coming aboard."
"Yes, that sounds about right. Mother and a Child I believe."
"Three people Ser. Mother, Child and her Guardian."
Hmm... that wasn't exactly mentioned, but just as well. You did fleece him with that real estate deal after all so it won't be much of a loss.
"Very well then. I trust the Quartermaster's been informed."

Lannisport isn't exactly known for it's alchemists or libraries for that matter.
If you wanted to look into books you won't necessarily find in Oldtown, you probably should have checked the Lannister library when you were still up the rock.

You also did get a decent look at their steel when working with the Maester.
The Steel they use and the equipment they produce in their castle is of pretty high quality.
The guards up the rock had a lot better made equipment than the guards down in Lannisport.

Overall there is room for improvement on the steel quality and worksmanship of the equipment used by the guards in the rock as well, but neither can be cheaply achieved without a lot of innovations in production methods.

With your portion of business out of the way and your crew seemingly capable of handling things on their own, you decided to enjoy a few days of shore leave whilst your ship was being loaded.

You ended up joining your parents on a shopping trip and checking the local bookstores in case they were carrying any volumes in Alchemy. What you ended up discovering was that such manuals were exceedingly rare and the few books you did find were copies of the book that was used on the Citadel's Alchemy course. One which offered little to teach you at this point.

You also ended up checking out the metalworks of the local smiths. There were some veritable masters in the town, at least when it came to Gold and Silver. Steel was... alright. Apparently the really good stuff was forged up in the rock, but you weren't so very impressed by the recently made Castle Forged steel.

There were blades made with masterful differential tempering around which were really good and you were told that the guy who made the blades had recently died and that they were still looking for a replacement for him. Even by your standards, they were far from shoddy work. Small wonder the Steward was looking into Smithing if he was the one charged with finding the replacement.

"So about this business with the Lannisters..."
"What? It's just a bachelor crib. I hardly need it anymore with my ship being complete. And it was not like I could do any grand projects in that place anyhow."
"I'm not sure the other highborn society of the Reach will agree. Some may try and mar our reputation, spreading rumors that you're in cahoots with the Lannisters."
You shrug
"Fuck them. Let them say what they will. If their whinging gets too loud, I can always demand a duel and blow their brains out."
Your mother doesn't look too pleased with that answer
"I think many would view such an action very unchivalrous."
"I would expect they do. Then again is it my fault if they buy shite armor? Knight is expected to pay his own equipment. The fact that mine is better than theirs proves I'm a better knight."
Your father chuckles whilst your mother does not
"I suppose there's some truth to that."

"Besides, I did decline the offer to join the Lannister navy."
"Wait. You did what?"
"Tywin Lannister ended up inquiring whether or not I was interested in joining and I told him that I intended to look for places where I was needed, rather than where I simply could be used. That is unless Landed titles were brought on the table."
"Oh dear... I hope he didn't take that as a slight. Still, that helps the narrative on our part."
"Even if he did take it as a slight, his brothers seemed to like me well enough. Tygett seemed to approve of the no nonsense attitude."

As you talked with your parents about highborn office politics, your second in command, Lieutenant Bodrin showed up.
"The Cargo is loaded and secured Ser. We've sent message to inform the passengers. We're ready to set sail at your command."
"Very good. Weather looks decent for now. We'll wait a day to let the passengers get their last minute shopping done and we'll sail the following morning."
"Very good Ser."

Come evening, all passengers seemed to stumble their way on to the ship, some drunk, others less so and your men informed them to get their affairs in order by tomorrow.

The Lannister bastard, her mother and the guard dressed up in Lannister armor escorting her stuck out like a sore thumb from usual the gentry and seamen aboard your ship.

She was a Blonde peasant girl with an ample busom and a braided hair. She was carrying the babe in strong arms with a sweet maternal smile on her face. It was small wonder that Gerion had taken a liking to her.

Both the guard and the girl were looking around your fancy ship with a mixture of curiosity and amazement.

"Ser Arthur Tallon. Captain of this ship. I take it you're the ones Tygett mentioned?"
"I am Ser Corrad. I was sent to make sure the boy gets settled to a decent life far from Lannisport."
"and what's your name?"
"Renei, Ser Knight"
"Don't you worry Renei. Life in Reach is pretty good."
The Guard handed you a hefty purse of gold.
"I was told to give this to you."
You signaled them to follow you to the Captains cabin and counted the coins.
"Seems it's all there. One moment."
You went to your strongbox and pulled out a sealed container within you had stored the deed to your property.
"One fresh new start in the City. I'll come and grab some of my old things first, but other than that you're set to go."
The Guard grabs the deed and inspects it.
"I was told you'd also help get the boy to the Citadel?"
"I can make the introductions and point you to the right direction, sure. You just have to pay the tuition, but I trust House Lannister has you covered in that regard?"
He nods
"Well then. I believe we're set to go as soon as the rest of the passengers arrive. Just get comfortable and enjoy the ride."

You knew that you couldn't go back using the same currents as coming here. The Currents pushed towards north, which in turn meant that you'd have to zigzag in order to sail your way back, which in turn meant the voyage would take a bit longer.

Going was a little bit rougher than it was the first time around as you're indirectly sailing against the winds, but at the same time the route you picked was a good one. The Currents weren't particularly strong and the wind was decent enough to make steady progress and best of all this route was far enough from the coast that you wouldn't need to worry about the pirates which ought to be swarming towards Iron Isles within this time period.

During the Journey you spent much of the free time you had socializing with the passengers which wanted to have dinner with you on your fancy captain's quarters, reading your book or chatting with your family members. Overall it was a journey with very little interesting happening on it. No sea monsters, drama or anyone falling overboard.
Just the creaking of timber and swaying of the ship as you made way towards Oldtown.

The trip took a little over a week within the weather. Fast pace no doubt in comparison to many other vessels. Come next harvest, it's not at all unreasonable for the vessel to ship Oranges around to Lannisport with even a bigger haul. Possibly other goods even further up north if you're feeling particularly brave.

After spotting Hightower on the Horizon, the passengers started packing their luggage and making themselves ready to depart once the ship would come to reach port.

The Journey had taken 20 days to complete, which in comparison to the lumbering carracks was less than they would generally take to make a one-way trip, provided there wasn't problems with the weather. Even Cogs would likely still be merely just departing at this time with their schedule, that is if they weren't held up due poor logistics.

The Maiden voyage was a resounding success and this success, world just got that little bit smaller.

After making port it well past noon. You sent message for the Charitable Traders to come and pick up their cargo as well as go fetch some carriages to transport the passengers. After a while, Guildmaster Orland showed up on the docks personally.

"Back and forth in 20 days, I had to see it to believe it. I must admit Ser Tallon I am impressed. That is certainly a record in speed for any captain I've ever worked with. Excellent work. I trust the cargo didn't spoil on the way to Lannisport?"
"It remained fresh enough that House Lannister decided to purchase all of it straight from the ship. Don't worry though, I made sure the Humble Imports were compensated for the lost cargo."
"Shame. Oh well, the Lords do what they will and we do what we must. Come stop by the guild a bit later I'll arrange your payment and we'll look into other routes for you to travel. For now, I really must get back to work."
"I'll see you later then."
>>
[2/4]

As the carriages started to show up at port, you watched as your men hauled the passenger's luggage to shore from the side of your ship.

"I guess that's the end of our little vacation. Back to work building a life in our new home."
"I certainly hope you two enjoyed the trip."
"It was quite a relaxing trip I must admit. Welcome diversion from the usual routine."
"You know, you're always welcome to come and see us at Copperhall. Your siblings would certainly liked if you showed your face more."
"Thank you. I do however foresee that I'll be quite busy in for a while working this ship to make it pay my investments back."
"I understand. Still, our home is your home."

They both gave you a hug before making their way to the carriages. It'll be some days riding still until they make it back to Copperhall.

"Ser Arthur?"
It was the Lannister Guard
"I haven't forgotten about you three Ser Corrad. I'll take you to the Citadel next thing tomorrow."
"And about the house..."
"Yes, we can go and handle that right away, I've some tools that I'll store on my ship, but besides that it's all yours to use. BOXER! SIDEBURNS! Grab some empty crates and a cart! We're moving some of my old stuff to the ship!"
"You got it Captain."

You took the woman and the guard to your old house.
"There's a forge down here in case the lad takes to smithing. If he doesn't, well he'll probably become a Maester then. Either way, nice little addition. Most of these smithing tools come with the property, but I've some molds here that I'll take with me."
"The cellar's nice enough for firewood or just food storage if you need it and upstairs is the main living room. I'll be taking most of the things up here with me. You can keep the furniture though."

The two looked to the odd instruments, weights and vials around the room.
"What on earth have you been using this room for?"
"Alchemical studies. They teach that in the Citadel as well. I speak from experience when I say that this apartment is very well suited for any novice or an initiate of the Order. Even a full blown Maester ought to get plenty of use out of this place."
"Oh, and also..."

You yank your chain off the wall
"I'll naturally be taking this with me."
The Knight takes a look at the thing you just pulled off the wall.
"Those... links you earned? By the Seven! You should be a Maester by now!"
"Yes, I was offered a membership with the Order, but it did sort of clash with both my ambitions and oaths of knighthood, so you know. Had to turn it down."
"No wonder you acted so brazen in front of Lord Tywin."
"Ah, you saw that?"
"Yes, I was in that dinner as well. I had thought it was just folly of youth that caused you to reject the honor, but there are few men that have earned a Maester's chain at your age. Fewer still with a knighthood as well. Yes, I can definitely see why you'd think yourself qualified for a landed title."
>>
[3/4]

"Maester's Chain, a Knighthood and Captain of one of the finest ships in Westeros. The only thing I need is a military achievement to top up that cake and there should be no question of my qualifications as a Landed Knight or dare I say even a Lordship if gods be good. Of course, we digress. Do you think the home is acceptable?"
"Acceptable and more Ser Arthur. The Market and the Citadel are close. Food prices are low and there's little to no need for firewood with this climate. She could rent out the lower portion of the house to the local smithing guild and be able to live comfortably without having to do much work if need be. She nor the bastard has any excuse to starve in a house like this."
"Aye, I did tell as much to Ser Tygett and in these matters at least I'm a man of my word."
"So I see Ser Arthur. I shall relay to my Lord that there's little need for other payments to the woman save the tuition fees for the bastard."
"Hope you're satisfied miss Renei?"
"Yes, I think it will be a good home for the boy."
"Good. I don't expect you to help with me getting my stuff out, but you know..."
Ser Corrad nods
"It'll be faster if I help. I agree."
"Wonderful. Good man."
You open the window and yell out to your men.
"BOXER! SIDEBURNS! BRING THE CRATES!"

The Evening was spent on boxing up your belongings securely and getting them back to the ship. Ser Corrad decided to bunk on your ship whilst the woman bunked on your old bed at her new home.

Come morning you would get the woman in touch with the Citadel and get the boy listed as an novice when he'd reach 7 years of age.

Congratulations! You have completed your maiden Voyage.
At this moment there are some decisions for you to make. Either you could keep playing up the remaining time, exploring the world of Ice and Fire until Greyjoy Rebellion by running the trade routes.

However, if you do not wish to play through voyages, sailing through the seas and instead would like to begin around the outbreak of the war, I shall allow you to skip to that point moment as well. If you choose this option, I shall give you some money you earned and you may choose how it was spent in preparation for the conflict.

It is currently the 8th month of 287 AC.
The Greyjoy Rebellion will end up happening around the first quarter of 289 AC leaving you around one and a half year time tops until the first battles will be fought.

Which will you choose

Then vite with me for Trade and we only Ned one for a deadlock forcing a die, and teo for the victory of battle at seas if we manage to goe and do a Essos run and pick up some merc work for our super fast courier ship. Contacts with selsails that we could get for the Royal fleet on commission and arrive at the iron islands war with a fucking fleet and the position of its paymaster and guide.

And while setting this magnificent bastard scheme, have some high seas adventure as Commisar-Captain Ser Athur Gallon, guntoating swashbuckling mad genius adventure tales that we could publish, as Trip to Essos, and build ourselves a printing press to publish it to supplement immediately our income for whatever spoils or position we secure with our mad scheme of merc sellsail provider extraordinaire

Vote!

>TRADE!

This could translate as a position for admiral in the third Royal fleet. use the stipend and loot or awardsmto pay of the mercs, and then set up some academies and and commissioning some ships like ours, then use the stipend to rent a new merc company that offers specialized ships like the ones that puloed a fleet out of our ass and now couodcalled Tallon High Seas Company, that cand do shit no one else can do, thus justifying the premium price for the absolute premium service.

We are going to become stinking fucking rich by owning in effect a national private privateer fleet we derive salary providing royal fleet services and can also do trade on the side for ourselves.
Pretty fucking bitching. We won't be quite as rich as Little finger on this alone but we will have power in the same league and all done on the up and up, completely legal and upfront. Our own private navy and trading company, under contract to the Iron throne.

And we will be exporting and importing everything between westeros and essos with our unbeatable price and monopoly one fast travel that out competes everyone. We only need to achieve maximum market capitalization on our latest design and we will control every shipment done by such a ship since they can pretty much name their price compared to any other ship and get it, due to lack of competition.

>>

Yi Ti doesn't have monopoly on Silk.
It's entirely possible that it comes from one of the other free cities as an import.

I haven't exactly mapped out where it comes from, but silk is too common to come exclusively from that far away.
>>
Actually what religion are we now?
Drowned god or seven?
>>
>>2418181
seven
>>
I think we should continue to trade, hitting the major cities along the cost and building some connections/reputation. We're not going to be able to build a merc company or much else over the next 1.5 years, but we can at least make ourselves familiar to the lords and other important folk around the area. That way once the Greyjoy Rebellion happens, we can build upon the reputation. We also take the money we are making to outfit our ship with the remaining cannons and arm our crew.

I really don't want to roleplay this whole thing out so hopefully we can break it down to a series of posts like our time at the citadel.
>>
>>2418244
Completely agree. The point with the trade option is having some small one-off adventures at sea and intrigue in foreign ports.

Currently, outfit the crew and the ship to the maximum and gather connections, good men and funds to finance our stuff once we are given land. Get the men some decent armour and maybe uniforms if we can. No second ships and no big spending until we get land.
>>
>>2418181
Technically religion isn't really your thing since the gods seem to be in no hurry to claim your soul for afterlife.

Of course publically you're part of the faith of the seven if obviously, not very pious.

>>
>>2418333
We're on the same page, this is the best plan. It's puts us in position to kick some Ironborn ass while building the connections we'll need to get landed, ideally along the coast.
>>
Just FYI the people you met at Harrenhal aren't real contacts for you anymore. If you say hi to someone once at a party and leave for years, they're gonna forget you and you're gonna forget them.

However if you hang around somewhere a long time, investing a fair bit of money, employing a lot of people like in Oldtown, you make friends and contacts for life.

Trying to form that sort of a relationship with but a single ship within like one and a half years is a bit difficult since you won't be doing the same old milk runs to the same place and because your ship will always be sailing ahead of a fleet on it's own.

This isn't a question of powergaming, this is a question of world building.
One isn't going to give massively higher rewards to the other unless you do something drastic.
>>
>>2418445
Fair enough. Let's focus on trading between Oldtown and Lannisport. We're building relationships there and can focus on them over time. Maybe we can take a quick journey to check something out, but getting on the good side of the Citadel and Tywin is only going to help.
>>
We only have 1.5 years, we don't have the time to spend years on a journey in Essos.
>>
>>2418485
Oldtown and Lannisport route isn't a repeatable milkrun that can be done with a ship of your weight class.

There isn't an infinite demand for luxuries in Lannisport and you're not built for bulk transport.

As the Humble imports woman said. Dealing with fruit is a hassle.
>>
Maybe figure out a trade route from Lannisport-Oldstown- Arbor- Sunspear? (if necessary- King's Landing)
>>
We could probably get a fair bit of cash trading through oldtown-sunspear-essos and back as that route is infested by pirates which we can see off easily
>>
>>2418589
That could work, I just want to do something where we can develop our relationships. Maybe we can ask the traders what the best routes would be?
>>
Guys, seeing as our ship does have a proper cabin unlike our last ship, we can design shit while we are travelling about. Fact is we've got tons of things we should probably draft prototype drawings for and we're going to be on this ship for a long time.

Why not sail down to the Summer Islands, trade some luxury goods and maybe take over the place?
>>
>>2418996
I don't think anyone fully grasps the full destructive power that we hold rn, but I suppose your point about experience is right. Let's go fight pirates then.
>>
>>2419007
With one ship and a hundred men the most we can take over is a few blocks in a major town, not a whole country.
>>

We'd essentially be a Magellan, unless we could manage to be a Cortez.

Either way, we should stick to smaller targets and not worry bout holding ground.
>>
>>2419592
Unfortunately we would likely get our own Battle of Mactan if we try to invade another sovereign nation, not to forget that our assorted superiors would likely want us dead to restore good will with the summer isles.

The stepstones and basilisk isles are run by pirate lords preying on honest men, the summer isles are run by powerful and respectable princes.
>>
>>2419627
Precisely. Any talk about conguering with one ship is foolishness. Stick to sailing and patrolling, occassional practical combat when a managable foe is presented.
>>
>>2419007
You don't have maps to reach Summer Isles and they're not sold publically.
>>
The Option for Trade isn't powergaming one it's a world building one.

You don't have the time, the money nor the political clout to form a sellsail fleet.

You don't have time nor money to build more ships.

You don't have time nor money to write a book.

Hunting pirates wastes ammunition which you can't replace indefinitely and risks your ship for destruction with little to nothing to show for it as pirates don't carry treasure on their ships so you'd be relying on bounties.

>>2418996
Firing guns once don't make you a subject for gossip forever. People will find other things to talk about if you don't keep wasting your powder.

>>2418629
You wouldn't know since the guild hasn't told you what to sell them and who to sell to. The Guild ultimately decides what trade routes to give you to run.

You had a bit over a year time to finish your preparations.
Plan had to be devised on how to spend those years in preparation for the coming conflict.
To fill out the 6 remaining cannon placements, you'd need to spend 180 Gold Dragons, but currently you have 220,1 Gold Dragons so that's not a problem.

You weighed the pros and cons of various different courses of action and in the end decided that the thing you needed most was...

>[Coin]: You ended up mapping out new trade routes, exploiting your speed and ability to sail the open seas to full extent which ultimately ended helping you make more money to the point that the ship almost paid itself back. (Gain 900 Gold Dragons spending money)

>[Contacts]: Through to your highly specialized vessel and unusual skillset, you acquire a contact with a prominent citizen in one of the free cities whom you formed a brief partnership with. (Gain 700 Gold Dragons)

>[Experience]: You ended up taking an escort job for a merchant fleet. Spending money on powder to shoot pirates and sailing slower meant less coin, but you gained some notoriety as a Captain not to be fucked with and your men gained some more experience in turn. ( Gain 500 Gold Dragons )

>[Write-in]: Another Idea which may or may not be vetoed.

Of course, once the war would come you would be left with some extra coin if you didn't spend it. The Question is how should you invest this money?

>More Guns are required. Maybe not necessarily to use yourself, but to help arm the King's levies. It would no doubt help solidify the necessity of procuring a supply of such weaponry and naturally the powder. Of course there's no reason you couldn't skimp on the costs a bit and say... Hand out Matchlock Arquebuses instead of the more modern Flintlocks.

>Perhaps a Great Cannon? Knocking down few towers with the thing would no doubt help impress King Robert in your Quest to ascend in the noble ranks. Whilst you yourself would have problems keeping such a beast fed even with your stockpiles of powder, a King should have no problems paying for such quantities of powder.
(Costs 200 Gold Dragons to make and 2000 musket shots of powder to fire.)

>Perhaps some light, swivel mounted secondary deck guns for the ship. Each of these would cost about 15 Gold each and use about 20 shots worth of powder when fired, but will certainly help pick off any small boats and discourage would be boarders. They can also be yanked off from their placements and used to reinforce ground fortifications as well.

>Write-in Something else? What?

Due to the simplicity of a Matchlock mechanism it doesn't actually cost extra on the gun.
>>
Oh, also if you wanna buy some flintlocks, the cost of the lock mechanism is like 175ss to make them yourself and 350ss to have a Tyroshi smith to make them for you.
>>
>>2420192
>>[Experience]: You ended up taking an escort job for a merchant fleet. Spending money on powder to shoot pirates and sailing slower meant less coin, but you gained some notoriety as a Captain not to be fucked with and your men gained some more experience in turn. ( Gain 500 Gold Dragons )

>construccion of ferguson type flintlocks
Instead of dowgrading the guns we are selling lets upgrade ours
>>
>>2420198
This and big ass cannon
It would get us in with bobby big time.
And chance of making more powder too?
>>

This way we get XP for the war, anti-boarding capabilities for our ship and we get a foot in the weapons trade. If things go well, we can start to manufacture and sell weapons to the crown as well as become the sole gunpowder manufacturer for those weapons. Dat monopoly. Also investments from the crown. Besides, the few hundred gold wont make much of a difference when the king throws us 5000G to set up the gunpowder factories.

Friendly reminder to all Powder friends.
Dont fight when its raining or very high air humidity.

I can't exactly let you have that route without you playing through it.

The Repercussions of bringing gunpowder to bear on the conflict of the contested lands would end up with the story taking a wholly different path with it's own political intrigue.

Alright, you've got 540,1 Gold Dragons as funds.
Your ship has 20 Cannons and your marines 40 Muskets.

Light Swivel Guns cost 15 Gold each
Arquebuses with matchlocks cost 200 silver stags, which is a bit under a gold.

How many did you get?

>>
>>2420315

>>
>>2420294
10 guns, 2 front, 2 back, 3 per side. Since they take 1 dude to man we get an enormous force multiplier and we can always reuse the guns later. -150 G

Then we make 150 Arquebuses for the Crown -143 G and add 57G worth of gunpowder to that.

This leaves us with an expense of 350G and 190,1G left over for other spendings.

This is set up to get the Crown to buy into our gunpowder idea and invest large amounts of coin in us. the guns are to avoid the mistakes of our last naval combat blunder.
>>
I mean, getting shot kills us quicker than the traditional means and the westerosi shitstorm is just around the corner. You can bet your arse the lannisters will get their hands on some and start reverse engineering it. Not sure how shit arquebus or handgunners are but is there anything shittier than that? Can we make our production version kinda shit accuracy?
>>
>>2420320
Arquebus are shit. Like really shit. In a modern day you would be better off with a crossbow than one of them.
And as long as we keep making powder a secret I don't think they will reverse engineer it.
>>
>>2420334
The secret will eventually come out. They can tell what we are buying in bulk and depending on how well we can keep our workers silent or how competent people like Varys is we may see copies within the next 2-3 decades or less if they steal the recipe. Or we may get lucky and not have it within our lifetime. Its really just a matter of time once we start mass production
>>
>>2420318
I support this although I would point out we not only had volley guns when we died last, but used them vigorously; they just failed because of the rain. This is why so many of us are obsessed with developing percussion caps to avoid being thwarted by drizzle again.
>>
>>2420354
>>2420334
>>2420320

Now that I am not drunk I would like people to recall that no one hasmanaged to steal the manufacturing of Myrish Crossbow even when they sell them like hot cakes.

This is imho a reason to not go with lower tech at all, maintain monopoly on the firening mechanism ma nufacutring and let others blow their fingers off trying to recreate it.

A massive stupidity since we are willing to sell to Lannister and any other lord or customer once Royal commission is done.

Getting Royal monopoly charter on our gunpowder and firearms for the low price of Royal priority on orders is jus the thing. Then sell to everyone.

No point in getting subpar firearms if the royal gunsmith is willing to sell to anyone, as long as the company is set up.

The more the better.

Because we will be working towards making ourselves a revolvers and breechloaders by the time bobby croaks, for all our fleet marines.
>>
>>2420334
Heavy crossbow costs almost five times to make though.
5 Arquebuses shit on 1 Heavy Crossbow.
>>
>>2420431
This, the "reverse-engineering" meme is going too far
>>
Main problem with reverse engineering your guns is that anyone doing so would need to either have access to or be willing to invest a significant sum of money to quite a variety of industries to produce both the guns and the powder.

There are very few people indeed either capable let alone willing to set up some sort of testing center with highly skilled alchemists that will repeatedly conduct experiments which may or may not result into a severe injury or death if fucked up.
These same people would also need to be very skilled smiths that would be able produce metal that won't blow up under pressure as well.

In fact the very concept itself is unheard of in the History of Westeros and likely in Essos as well. If Industrial espionage was really a common enough thing as many people seem to assume, then there'd be no monopolies in the world at all and the situation is the exact opposite.

Monopolies and oligopolies are the norm in both the free cities and in the Seven Kingdoms. Varys didn't go so far as to try and figure out the recipe for wildfire and send it to his claimant or if he did, that information itself would have been worthless as there'd be no alchemists actually producing the stuff.

That's not even the end of the expenses.
It'd cost a fantastic sum of money to try and phase out the existing equipment and replace them with these newfangled weaponry, which mind you are more or less untested in battle for those who try to make them work by trial and error, which means they don't know how many shots they can even take nor would they have any doctrine for using such weapons.

It's just a very hefty investment to make which taxes the person willing to make in terms of skilled labor, managerial staff, money, logistics and more. Unless it's absolutely necessary, people would rather stick with what they've got at the moment and try to figure out tactics to counter gunpowder weaponry with their existing tools, should they ever face them in battle.
>>
>>2420315
>>2420317

Yeah. Let's do this.

Also maybe find some counter measures for the rain? Like canopy on upper deck which we can quickly set up if rainy weather happens.
>>
>>2420498
Would the Crown be willing to invest in our weapons when we show them how deadly these things can be against armored opponents? I assume the cannons will sell like hotcakes?
>>
>>2420431
>>2420498
Fair point, I was just afraid they would adopt and innovate it as quickly as japan did.

What I am afraid of now is that they would use then firearms on us. It only takes one assasin with a pistol to end us, and our swordsmanship can't even protect us from it. Makes our mortality a much more fleeting thing.
>>
>>2420606
We aren't selling the cannons, just the small arms for now
>>
>>2420606
Cannons would bring about huge issues, for fortifications and ships. Including ours, a bit too dangerous to us if used by opponents in my opinion
>>
>>2420638
Still, selling them shittier guns (not so much in performance but in flexibility, the lock being the question) is a great way. As to selling cannons, I would assume selling a few gunships would be a way for us to make major bank. Besides, we know these gunships are shit against cannons themselves, meaning that at that point we make ourselves a first-class frigate with the gunboat sales money. So while mass production of cannons is a shit, making a few gunboats for exorbitant sums as hammers or scouts for the Crown or Lannisters is a lucrative thing.
>>
>>2420638
Instead of firearms, they could use a crossbow, or a throwing knife, or poison (on or off a dart).
If someone has the means and want to kill us odds are they will do it.

But unlike them we know what to look for in checking a person for a handgun. It might be new to them but old for us.
>>
Im just really disappointed that we wont be able to get the monopoly on gunpowder. the alchemist guild in kings landing will lap that shit up.

I think It would be more prudent to gain a greater share in the ownership of sulfur and saltpeter, that would make us far more dosh in the future than anything.
>>
>>2420658
Selling them guns I am tentatively okay with. Selling them cannons makes me very nervous. You see, cannons made castles obsolete, the more people realize this the more the demand as this will literally be a revolution in tactics. The issue with this is that they will start demanding us make them more or tell them how. Once all parties of a conflict realizes we have a chokehold on it they will try to develop it or hoard it. Even if they don't reverse engineer our guns, an imperfect gunpowder formula is valuable enough strategically to hurt us pretty badly if used creatively. And trust me, when you become the centerpiece for intrigue and survival of realms no price is too high to try to steal your tech. How do you think gunpowder weapons exploded in popularity and usage between rival countries in europe? Myrish crossbows don't have this issue because it is so far away from the center of westerosi politics and that it doesn't revolutionize warfare like gunpowder does.

Better crossbows are nice, but they don't render things like castles and bows obsolete. Handguns are pretty damn good at killing plate armor and is accurate to do so at a range further than a composite bow can. It might not be very far at all but it is good enough to change the face of medieval warfare especially when war at the time was based around castles. >>2420498
>>
>>2420696
This ofcourse paints a big red target on us and our industry when war breaks out. Securing either would be of massive strategic value
>>
>>2420696
cannons don't make castles obsolete, they make traditional castle design ineffective.
>>
>>2420675
I know, but a crossbow or knife can be mitigated by armor and shields especially in battle. A stray bullet to the front of our chestplate will end us. Outside of battlefield its really just a game of paranoia, guns are less of a factor outside of battle
>>
>>2420706
Which is pretty much all westerosi castles and important strategic locations. You dont build castles in a year buddy, castles take decades and generations while cannons much less so.
>>
>>2420706
Casterly rock's walls won't but such a daunting task knock down with cannons compared to trebuchets. Its a strong location on high ground and you can't build a fortress with cannons in mind in the same location within any reasonable timeframe. Thus, traditional castles become obsolete with a sudden introduction of new siege tech
>>
>>2420723
Therfore revolutionizing warfare in this shithole called westeros
>>
I still think you are overreacting, but I agree nonetheless.

I just want to monopolize gunpowder.
the money, man.
It would be, like, Up to your neck.
>>
>>2420687

>>
>>2420734

>>
>>2420746

>>
>>2420315

>>2420498

>>2420746
now I have an even larger money boner.
>own all production of gunpowder
>Gain sulfur and saltpeter mines as method of payment for service of the crown
>produce gold dragon ship and guns just for kicks.
>>
>>2420606
Depending how they perform in the war, they'll want you to provide gunpowder levies at the very least for the King and considering that there's always some rogue knights running around at times, those levies will likely end up seeing extensive use.

There's not a massive amount of money they'd invest in you because you know, crown tends to be in a fair bit of debt but even Jon Arryn would agree that having to at least a couple of hundred guys armed with weapons that scream that they want you dead rather than alive can send a quite a powerful message if employed correctly.

Big issue with getting hit by guns in this time period is that Maesters still haven't had time to figure out how to treat bullet wounds, which means pretty much everyone hit by them tends to die unlike with arrow wounds.
>>
>>2420658
Your current light cannons can't really do dick against a first rate frigate save leaving dents so you know.
If you build one of those behemoths, they could bring a hundred of light cannons against it and they wouldn't be able to sink it.
>>
>>2420687
Alchemist guild in King's Landing is on thin Ice.
The King is more liable to trust you than those fucks that were the Mad King's pets.
Any gunpowder research they do, they'd have to pay from their own pockets or from a third party source, which in turn would mean that Jaime's gonna do another purge on them the moment he catches wind of that since they're not supposed to do anything without the King knowing.
>>
>>2420696
You ever heard the story about the Rogue Artillerist that tried to sell Byzantium better cannons, but he got rejected because they said that it'd cost too much.
Later Byzantium was sacked thanks to those very same guns outranging theirs.

Most conflicts in planetos are border skirmishes, tribal conflicts and petty vassal wars. Gun panic is only going to hit when Westeros is starting to outfit hundreds of ships with cannon and tens of thousands of men with guns.

But yea, your current light cannons don't do dick to their castles save ones that rely heavily on wooden fortifications and reinforcements, which is by no means a small amount.
You need specifically designed siege artillery and a lot of expensive powder to tear down stone walls, especially in consideration of the oversized castle design that westerosi love.
>>
>>2420776
>>2420789
>>2420801
>>2420817
All of these point right here. We set up a small force on arquebus dudes for the crown, they prove useful. We get the money to set up powder production, which we will get a monopoly on because literally nobody wants to waste time on it and those that would cant really. Then we make gunpowder and weapons and start selling gunships for a high price, meanwhile building up infrastructure and making ourselves a Frigate that dwarfs the gunboats. A real monster to make sure we always have the upper hand. Then we into Royal Engineer/Siege expert, more money and ties and eventually build up enough to take the Stepstones.

So, for now, selling guns and gunboats and being the only dude that sells the stuff to make them worthwhile makes us a shitload of cash. And all this with relatively little danger, assuming we can garner enough attention with our guns. Hence why this >>2420218 is a good option. We give the crown a taste of the power while we wreck shit at sea. Then tie it all up in a neat bun of Royal Money ™.
>>
>>2420905
I like this plan & support it fully.
>>
>>2420905
This sounds interesting.

Then we remodel our home castle into a starfort.

Plus a small trade fleet of bigger sailships (a few three or six) with one big escort and another two like our own.

Or conquer a few islands in the step stones and build some cannon forts there to fend off enemy fleets.
>>
>>2422463
Basically, I dont know whether making a normal trading fleet is as lucrative but we can always use them as gunpowder shipping ships. Send them with an escort to fulfill large deliveries of our goods.
>>
>>2422463 you do know how much that would cost right? We don't have anything close to enough money for that
>>
>>2422479
Wont do it all at once but with Royal cash behind us we can accomplish quite a bit. Especially if we R&D some industrial revolution for ourselves to boot. Just have to find qualified men that are loyal enough.

Year you had spent in the east.
Your course was set towards escort work in some of the more pirare ridden waters as you figured that your lads needed experience using guns and that there were definitely trade fleets around that needed supporting ships.

It did not take too long for the would be plunderers to get the message. Warning shots by cannon were usually enough to disperse any unknown vessels that lingered too close.

In fact, you only needed to partake in one sea battle on coast to establish a reputation as someone to not be fucked with, which ended up earning you the favor of a Qarthese merchant called Irrio Dirrassar whose family owned a fleet of 10 ships which did not contain a single true warship.

You ended up meeting the man in Volantis as his fleet was making its way to Braavos and looking for protection. One of the ships he hired turned out to be a pirate vessel, which lead to your first conflict on the Stepstones.

You ended up visiting Lys, Tyrosh, Pentos and Braavos with the fleet until finally he was making his way back to south again to his home beyond the smoking sea.

On your way, you ended picking up some powder materials as well as making some cheap matchlocks which you no doubt could sell for a steep price when the war comes. You also ended up getting a lot of swivel guns dotted around the ship as secondary guns, offering extra defense for unexpected situations and filling out your cannons to full complement.

As you detached from the fleet and started heading west, it was time to decide. The Ironborn will likely strike Lannisport within a month or two and you could still make it to there if you'd like.

There's also the possibility of sailing past them to Seagard and helping in that defense. As far as you remember, Ironborn botched that battle.

Of course, if you need to show off your guns, there's no place like the battle of fair Isle. You could join Stannis' fleet or Redwyne fleet for that one. Afterwards they'd surely display their worth at the siege of Pyke.

You're not entirely sure how you want to do this.

Probably want something less flamboyant and more intimidating. Let the reach have their rosy dresses, we are into the Ordnung game. Pride in their work and Duty and the dress to reflect not playing at war, but living war. Also going for black and grey is far cheaper and has a better effect, since an army of uniform black (as opposed to ironborn ass-grey and nights watch ruffled-dirt-black) not only stands out but shows a no-nonsense approach.

As to helmets and chestpieces, absolutely, shoulderguards too, depending on whether we will fight on land or at sea (armor being more useful in formation fighting, agility for hectic sea battles). Battle uniforms should probably not include frilly ornaments and should be gray, since they would stick out less in the rocky islands. Also more professional that way. Go for a Prussian discipline type deal.

Thoughts?

We kind of need the colour tough. Easy to see troops make for easier command and control without radio or telegraph.

Also black is a bit of a mixed bag since taking the black is going to the nights watch so black is out of the question imho.

Grey is also annoying since it will be harder to spot people in fog or such. That is why I like the red. Or green. Anything that will make our troops more visible in fog or in the water for easier S&R and command purposes.

Plus we are making uniforms for our crew not a whole regiment. So the cost is not that big of a issue at our scale.

There is good reason why uniforms where not camouflage for line units until the modern era, and such considerations were mostly for skirmishers and explorers.

French school.

Deploys 4 ranks deep and fires by rank in salvo, advancing and firing with the intention to charge with the bayonet once the enemy is reeling from close fire. Combined focus on fire and melee. Offensive in nature. Mainly used by France.

Anglo-Dutch school.

Deploys 3 ranks deep and fires by platoon in smaller salvos, intending to disrupt the enemy march and close by subjecting him to continious disciplined fire. Focus on fire. Defensive in nature. Used by England/Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Brandenburg along with some of the low (northern) German states.

Austrian school.

Basically the French school, but without the intent to go to melee. 4 ranks deep, fire by rank and fire and defensive focus. Developed to combat the melee-happy Ottomans by devastating fire. Used by Austria and the verious central European and high (southern/central) German states

Russian school.

The Austrian school, but even more defensive. The Russians deployed from 4 up to 6 ranks deep, had a small unit of pikemen to ward off cavalry and focused on fire to combat melee-happy Swedes and Ottomans. Fire by rank and defensive. Whenever possible, the Russians would construct earthworks to increase their defensive potential (as they did at Poltava 1709).

This school developed due to many of the higher officers and even many of the soldiers in Peter's early armies were high German mercenaries, bringing the Austrian school, and the need to keep the newly raised Russian armies together as well as fighting the Ottomans and the Swedes, who would come to them every time.

Swedish school.

Influenced by the French school, but much more offensive. Deployes 4 ranks deep, but 1/3 of the battalion is pikemen - not to ward off cavalry, but to charge with longer weapons, making the enemy unable to respond. Fires two salvos by double rank (ie all muskets in the battalion) before charging. Reloading in the face of the enemy is strictly forbidden.
>>
>>2424816
But we wont be fielding so many troops that C&C becomes a problem. besides, our advantage is we can incapacitate many men in a single round but reloading is a pain, meaning the longer we stay hidden the better for us. That also applies to ambushes. So while I agree that in a field with 20 000 musketmen being colourful is good, with 40 dudes against 400, being hidden is our advantage. As to S&R problems, have them carry a bright red hankerchief they can pull out when in trouble. As effective and can be hidden when needed. The only point I agree with here is the possible connection to the NW. This is a branding problem and would have to be solved, however dressing sharp and giving off an air of professionalism, as opposed to dandy, will play into our commissar shtick.

As to line combat, probably want Russian style, since we dont have that many muskets and we need defence against cavalry.
>>
>>2424824
the Swedish style was based on shook assaults capitalizing on the shook of being soot in the face first from 30 meters second from 5 meters away I think. Witch is exactly wat wee need too do if we are too get the most use out of our technological advantage as none will charge you when they are being shoot at. And most will rout after the first assault.
the Russians suffer from the problem that they cannot attack and need a numerically superior army too be effective in the field. The Swedish strategy was because they cannot survive a prolonged battle as they were too few. But there will be problems using it against medieval combatants as they are more focused om melee and the Swedish is focused fighting other gun lines
I also think we shod try using Gustavian infantry instead of tericos in the beginning as they are more manuverable and smaller blocks but are more gun focused. (Relatively new and I not know if you guys already had this discussion)
>>
>>2424845
The reason I picked Russian was because that gives us a steady amount of fire (4*10 or 2*20 lines) with pikes in front to stop any dumb charges. This means the enemy will be taking fire while moving and even when they close we can still (depending on how low the pikemen are) shoot. Ideally it wouldnt even be a formation, with dudes being in ambush or in a defended position, but if we want to take to the field, we need some meele defence but certainly wouldnt charge in.

As to Gustavian tactics, correct me if Im wrong but they also boil down to a charge. This, against "medieval" meele infantry is suicide.
>>
>>2424883
Gustavian infantry was designed to exploit the Tercios weakness that it was a large immobile block and instead used small units and light canons. And thereby be more flexible and mobile.
>>
>>2424908
We have 40 dudes. Even with 400, i doubt it would make a difference. Now using smaller blocks of men? Absolutely. Our strength lies in mobility and flexibility. No need for bulky armor and a deadly punch.
>>
>>2424908
A Gustavian company numbered 147 these including 21 officers, 54 pikemen and 72 musketeers.
and a Tercio had 250 man strong companies of either pikes or muskets

You decided to set heading to northwest for Dragonstone and beyond it to Capital if there was need for such.

After a few weeks of sailing, you caught glimpse of the rather grim looking Castle on the Isle. Valyrian architecture had a rather distinct look. From the Castle to the Watchtowers, all was all wrought of black stone.

It was not constructed of cut pieces of rock mortared together. There were no bricks to be seen either. Instead, the constructs were melted. Whether it was entirely formed off a molten block or simply surface welded, you couldn't tell.

The surfaces were often twisted into ornate shapes of dragons, other fanciful forms. In your eyes it didn't really seem much like a work of masonry as much as cast made from molten stone.

There were no Merlons on the castle, instead, they had great variety of statues shaped to serve as crennellations in shapes ofbasilisk, cockatrices, demons, griffins, hellhounds, manticores, minotaurs, wyverns, and other creatures.

Basically it looked like the guy who designed this had an obsession with 80's metal album covers or maybe something that Skeletor would live in there or something. The Smoking shadow of a mountain on the background really sells the image of a stronghold of an evil wizard.

Your crew were awestruck to see such a construction and you had to admit that you sort of were too, even though you did consider all the dragons a bit tacky. Hell you've got enough dragon statues in the place that if you painted the dragons white, one might have mistaken Aegon Targaryen for Seto Kaiba.
Fuck, now that image is stuck in your head.

Anyhoo you made it to quite obviously volcanic Island of Dragonstone and made port, requesting an audience with the Lord of the Castle.

Instead of meeting Stannis, you were greeted by stout, homely looking man with round thick arms and bandy legs.
"I am Ser Axell Florent, Castellan of Dragonstone. I was told you had business with the Lord of the Castle?"
"Well met Ser Axell. I am Ser Arthur Tallon and yes, I am looking for the Master of Ships, Stannis Baratheon. I am seeking to offer my services to him as a Knight, a battle tested Captain, Master Engineer, Master Blacksmith, Master Architect of Ships and an Aspiring Architect of Fortifications, and as well as an Alchemist."
He looks at you for a moment, wondering if you're full of shit or not.
"That's certainly is quite a resume. I'm afraid Prince Stannis is at the Capital for the moment, serving in the small council, but you and your men are certainly welcome to wait until he returns or you may head straight to the Capital. Either way, hospitality of Dragonstone is yours."
"I thank you for your hospitality then."

Ask him about the health of the infant (if Shireen is born) and suggest the humidity of Dragonstone might not be very good for weak infants, then use greyscale as an example. Then, begin talking up the need for nice and warm rooms and avoiding the wet dank of the castle.

I don't think we should be too direct with warning him about the greyscale.

Depending on when the princess is born, we can do it before or after visiting the capital. Dont just ask him to read up, say we are curious ourselves because we saw it overseas and wanted to be sure what it was.

Otherwise, boat trip for the B Bros in the Capital.

Until we have a battalion we are running a marine contingent that can pulll skirmish and garrison duty.

Doctrine is for when we get in the thousands.

And since the tercio is the thing to go for, well that or the black army.

We are not going to get line infantry unless we manage to get a industrial revolution in miniature going, and even then, prioritising cannon and sticking with tercio or derivates is probably a better option on a large scale.

We could go for full line infantry by the time succession crisis hits, and if we do a miniature industrial revolution, and manage to get breechloaders. At that point we can go line and roflstomp.

But even in black army or tercio mode westeros army are going to be vastly superior to anyone else, save perhaps the frozen undead.

But for them we break our flamethrowers, specifically handpumped roman ones
>>
>>2425132
But why is Tercios better then Gustavian infantry. The Tercio is a moving fortress of death and pikes. But the Gustavian infantry beats the Tercio (se battle of battle of Britenfield). It has a with higher number of guns and is more mobile. Therefore a much better offensive. It only lacks in the defensive department but you cant beat a Tercios Defensive without tanks.
>>
>>2424919
>> Hmm... I could tell Maester Cressen to look into Greyscale beforehand. Could help him be prepared
then
> I think I'll just head straight to the Capital
>>
>>2425178
Because Westeros, outside of the three weirdo kingdoms, is the premier heavy cavalry country of the known world and because outside of westeros it is unlikely to face mass firearms deployment and the main force to beat is the Dothraki, and defense is good when the preferred and almost exclusive tactic is the charge of said foe.

Plus we can switch to gustavian if we fight other gunpowder armies later. Not that I don't like it, but if we manage to jump to line combat then it is superfluous and tercio is easier to train people more used to large formation than small formations, so easier command adoption by Bobby B&Co.

> Give Cressen some advice
> Head straight to the Capital

[1/3]

"I think I'll continue to the Capital tomorrow and let the men have a brief respite. Eat some fresh food, sleep on a decent bed and stretch their legs. No doubt the Master of ships is a busy man."
"It is you say Ser Arthur, but come. I've no doubt we shall be serving the same Lord soon. We should get to know each other better."
"Perhaps we could postpone that a spell?"
He raises his eyebrow as his face goes stiff
"I've just returned from the Narrow Sea and I believe it would be prudent to have a Maester do an inspection on whether or not I didn't bring anything with me."
His face softens
"Ah yes, of course. One can never be too careful in matters of health. Servant! Take Ser Arthur to see Maester Cressen."

Following the page boy you climbed up the stony steps of the He-man live action prop until you finally reached the room of the Maester.

On your way there, even though it was summer, it didn't feel too dry. The Ocean air seemed to make its way to most places in the castle, which resulted into problems with humidity.
Still, such a problem was ever present with most all places built this close to the ocean whether it was a Braavosi inn, a Pentosi winesink or a Myrish wine cellar.
Fixing it would likely require electronics or some sort of air filtering system.

The Page knocked the door
"Maester. A Guest is here to see you."
An aged man on a Maester's robe with several chains over his neck opens the door.
"Greetings. I don't believe we've met. I am Maester Cressen, a steward and the healer here in Dragonstone, in service to Prince Stannis."
"I am Ser Arthur Tallon a knight aspiring to join the Royal Fleet. I recently returned from the free cities and I'd like a medical checkup if you've a moment."
"Tallon... Tallon... Ah! I remember now. The Lad who caused a ruckus in the Citadel some years back. Pottle, you may go now. I'll take it from here. Come on in and take a seat."
"It's a shame more noblemen aren't as sensible as you are. Many diseases lurk in the Free Cities and at times they arrive too late for help."
"Oh, don't I know it. Seen a ship I was escorting suffer an epidemic on board once. Not a pretty sight. Luckily my men are sensible enough to know the dangers of the pox that they don't frequent the cheap bordels."
"One need not fear contagion from cheap prostitutes in Dragonstone. Lord Stannis has outlawed all brothels here. Oh, if you would take your clothes off."
"Sure thing."
You strip down without covering anything up. God it's good to be old and nude.

"Still, takes more than a ban to get rid of the world's oldest profession."
He grabs you from the scrotum
"Look to the side and cough please. Very good. You may put on your clothes."
"Your complexion looks good. Some minor sunburns but as you'd expect from your profession. You don't seem to be carrying any diseases at a first glance, but if you would..."
He takes a couple of jars for you.
"Pardon?"
"Urine and stool sample."
"Ah, I see. Where's the privy, I'll get it done ,right now."
"Right at the end of the hall."
After examining your samples he states.
"You seem to be in perfect health as far as I can tell. More vegetables could help with your digestion, but I don't know what else to tell you. Rather impressed by your lack of reservation. Most noblemen aren't so open minded to being poked and prodded like such."
"I did spend a fair few years at the Citadel. Even if I didn't really study medicine myself, I do realize Healers don't do that for fun of it. By the way Cressen, can I call you Cressen? As a well traveled man I'd like to give you a bit of advice if you don't mind."
His expression freezes as he looks into your eyes
"Honest advice really. I've seen conditions like this on the free cities. Dampness, humidity and the occasional cold with plenty of foreign sailors passing through. Conditions like this seem to attract Greyscale from what I can tell."
His face shifts looks at you oddly
"Greyscale? What?"
"Just something I noticed. You might want to prepare for the eventuality of an outbreak in here. Especially that since the smallfolk see disease as divine providence and it's only a matter of time that the disease finds its way here... You catch my drift?"
"Hmm... You give good council. Dragonstone has indeed had instances of Greyscale before if I recall correctly. It is indeed a very real danger that could very well find it's way here again and in a time such as this, it could cause great unease amongst the smallfolk. I shall request some tomes from the Citadel on the subject as well as commission whatever treatment methods are available."
You give him two thumbs up and edge your way to the door.
"Faantastic. Dragonstone is after all positioned as a shield for the Capital in regards to these things. You've a big responsibility in that regard. Nobody wants another Grey Plague."
He ponders on that a moment as you slip back to your ship.

Come morning you set sail to the Capital under fair weather. Luckily your guild membership was valid at this port so you could use the company dock. Then again, you doubted there'd be a trading company in Westeros without affiliates in the Capital.
You notice the Onion flag of Ser Davos Seaworth on one of the cogs on port as well.

Setting ashore near the Fishmarket, you admire the great stony and towers which surround the city. It would seem that Aegon either chose intentionally not to shape his capital like a death metal album or he lacked the capability of doing so as the city looked fairly normal by comparison to rest of Westeros.
Incredibly huge and full of people, but still normal.

Come to think of it, didn't Ser Hector have a swordsmanship school somewhere in the Capital? Should I pay him a visit first I wonder? I'm not exactly in a rush JUST yet.

"Right. Get me a carriage and I'll take 4 lads as guards. I'll see if I can't get an audience with the prince."
"I'll see it done Ser."

Upon receiving your ride, you made your way through the mud gate and started riding towards Aegon's hill by the hook admiring the sights.
The City had been built around three massive hills. Aegon's hill, Visenya's hill and Rhaenys's hill. All three were excellent locations for castle, but for some reason only the Red Keep stood well and truly fortified.
You wondered what the reason for that was. Perhaps there were simply no need for additional castles? Far as you learned from your masonry studies, it's entirely doable to create castle with a mine on the same hill, so it's unlikely precious metals were the reason.

Rhaenys's hill holds the Dragonpit so maybe they figured dragons were defense enough and Visenya's hill holds the Great Sept of Baelor, so perhaps there were some religious significance to that decision.

Upon reaching the start of Shadowblack Lane, you were stopped by the Gold Cloaks standing in watch of the first gatehouse.
"HALT! State your name and business."

You step out of you carriage with the full Imperial authority granted to you by Schola Progenium and the Commissariat (which is to say none) and address the guard.

"I am Ser Arthur Tallon. A Knight Errant, An Initate of the Citadel, A Master Blacksmith, An Architect of Ships and Captain of the Long Night. I am seeking to offer my services to the King's Master of Ships in such quantity."

He eyes up and down at you and your odd clothing.
"Alright then Ser Arthur. You can go on up since you don't seem like common rabble. The Guards higher up will check whether or not you're to be granted entry to the castle."
"Naturally."

So began your climb up the hill towards the seat of Royalty of this nation. The view was no doubt impressive as you watched down at the land loving plebs going about their daily lives below you. You could even see the Pyromancers guild in the distance at the center of the city.
As you started to go higher and higher, the air became cleaner. Down on the sea level everything had a ripe stench, but up here there was only the smell of the smoke produced by the chimneys and the fresh scent of the blowing sea winds.

After reaching the final gatehouse, you were told to wait and leave behind any arms and armor. Anticipating this, you told your men to stay behind and guard your stuff as you went to handle business. Knight as you are, you are still a stranger in this court.

Followed by a half an hour of waiting, the Guard came back.
"You are to proceed to the Tower of the Master of Ships as per orders of Prince Stannis Baratheon. It is the one nearest to the docks. Ask one of the servants for directions if you need such. Welcome to the Red Keep Ser Arthur."
>>
[2/2]

You smirk as the lounging nobility turn their heads at your rather eye catching appearance whilst you make your way past them with swagger in your full aquila and skull covered glory.

"It's right here Ser Tallon."
"Thank you page. You're dismissed."
The Young boy skedaddles away enthusiastically. Man, you really don't want to have to do his job again. So degrading.
"Ser Tallon? Proceed on inside. The Master of Ships will see you at his leisure. You are to wait outside his office until he does."

After another good 20 or so minutes of waiting and enjoying the little snacks they always leave in these waiting rooms, the door to the office opens and you're greeted by a man with an onion ship embroidered as his Sigil.

"Ser Arthur Tallon I presume? Lord Stannis shall see you now."
"Ah, yes of course. Lead the way."
You stand up and enter the office and watch a man in his mid 20's with dark blue eyes and a heavy brow sit on the table wearing rather modest, woolen clothes whilst you stand in front of him with your flamboyant uniform.

"Ser Arthur Tallon. Meet Prince Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone and the King's Master of Ships."
He crosses his fingers, leaning on his elbows on the table and looks at you up and down for a moment.

He taps his fingers on the table and speaks
"I am told you seek to enter my service and I am not one to turn down men who are both capable and eager to serve."
He reclines back on his chair.
"How old are you?"
"This year will be my 21st nameday Prince Stannis."
"I was told you introduced yourself as a Knight, a Master Blacksmith, a student of the Citadel, a Ship Architect, and a Ship Captain."
"This is Correct. We faced one-another at the Squire's melee at Harrenhal. I spent the war in the Citadel and forged my links after 3 years in the Citadel and spent the following 4 years in building, researching and developing my own ship."
"Which links did you forge?"
You reach into your pocket and pull out the intricate chain you made yourself years ago.
"21 Links in total. 9 Links of Pale Steel, 6 Links of Yellow Gold, 2 Links of Brass, 2 Links of Red Gold, 1 Link of Pewter and 1 Link of Black Iron."
"Smithing, Architecture, Numbers and Stewardry, Warfare, Carpentry and Alchemy."
"Correct." You confidently speak out.
His eyes narrow as he looks at you
"Exactly how were you imagining that I use you?"

I have weapons at my disposal that can crack the hull of all but the toughest ships in one blow from over 200 paces. My men can shoot any fool daring enough to face me the same way, regardless if the man wears plate. I have sailed the known seas, visited many ports and fought pirates time and again, taking not a single casualty and projecting power far beyond my weight class. Put bluntly, I have the deadliest single ship in the World in my possession and the men to use it at my command. And, for a fair price, I can be at yours.

But quite frankly while there were many places more suitable at first glance-and pardon for the possible offense-no other lord and their fleets had at their disposal the same kind of 'Potential' so to speak. Ive read on you quite a lot, and needless to say I believe you are in the best position to make the biggest at-face-value risks for the absolute highest rewards. and this is a business I am more adept than all others, bar none.

I take it that's about the gist of it since there's no true overwhelming consensus.

How much ammo do you want to include with them?
Barrel of about 3500 shots worth of powder sound good?

"I seek High Risk, High Reward work. My ship is one of the fastest, most deadly vessels in the known world and my qualifications are numerous."
He waves for you to go on
"I've experience sailing both Western and Eastern seas of the continent and my vessel is capable of making the trip between Lannisport and Oldtown within a week, outrunning any known Warship designs on a decent wind while still outclassing heavier vessels in terms of armaments thanks to it's Black Powder weapons."

He remains unflinching as he looks at you in the eyes as you're trying to make your pitch.

"And why would you say Black Powder weapons are so special compared to the Scorpions, Bows, Rams and Spitfires? Such weapons have proven tried and true for thousands of years."

"Far as I've seen with pirate vessels, Cannonfire and ship rams both will sink a ship.
The Difference is that cannons can do it while remaining out of range from scorpions or spitfires.
I've also armed my vessel with shorter ranged swivel guns which can quickly shoot down lighter targets, such as fast sail boats and skiffs should they try to screen the waters with smaller vessels.
Failing that, should they reach boarding range despite this, I've Marines with gunpowder small arms which will punch through even the most heavily armored targets like a hot knife through butter."

"Sounds like empty boasting and exaggerated rumors to me, but I do need more Captains and ships that much is true. Even if you're overqualified by merit of your links."
"If you think me braggart my Prince, the how about a Demonstration? In fact, just so you can personally understand how uniquely useful and qualified I am, let's see... how about 40 Matchlocks and a keg of powder as a late wedding gift? You can then personally ascertain their usefulness without relying on rumors and braggarts for information."

He gives a glance at Ser Davos and turns your eyes towards you a look full of Iron.
"Very well then. I shall see this demonstration of yours, but it shall take place within the castle grounds."
"Ah. Small scale demonstration then. Very well then, I'll have my men bring some a couple of matchlocks from the ship and you may choose whether you like them or not."
He writes something down
"I'll let the guards know. We'll see tomorrow if you're a man of your word... or just another braggart."
"How does noon sound?"
"We shall see tomorrow. You're both dismissed for the day."

Davos escorts you out of the office.
"Try not to take it personally. Lord Stannis has become become a very busy man as of late. His schedule is a bit hectic."
"Should find a secretary then to help manage his daily routines.
I wonder though should I head back to the ship and bunk there or might I borrow a room or something and save the trip?"
"I'll help you find a guest room then Ser Arthur."
"My thanks Ser Davos."

"Fire in the hole!"

The Projectile ripped through the air with a thunderous roar, striking at the old helmet that was chosen as a sacrifice for the test. The Lead balle punched straight through the steel with an audible clank.

BOOOM-CLANK!

"Well shot Ser Davos!"

The Noise from the archery range had begun to attract quite the proceeding. Noblemen and women mesmerised by this newfangled device that spat stormclouds of brimstone.

Barristan Selmy of the Kingsguard had almost immediately been alerted by the loud noises and arrived with some goldcloaks to see what was happening only to find Prince Stannis and his men trying out some strange weapon on a battered old helmet.

After they returned to tell everyone that it was nothing to worry about, courtiers started to pop up curious of what was happening and began to watch the show.

"To be Honest I was not expecting to hit. It's difficult to hold this thing with missing fingers."
The Afterglow of successfully hitting the target was still written all over his face.
"Even with fingers it's always a bit of guesswork initially on these things. Each weapon has their own soul and personality. The Longer you shoot with the weapon, the more you learn how the weapon likes to behave."
You hand over the matchlock to Prince Stannis

"How about it? Care to try?"
He looks at the crowd gathered
"I suppose if I must. Instruct me through the process Ser Arthur."
"Blow the match."
"Charge the Barrel with Powder."
"Place the Ball and Patch in the barrel."
"Remove your scouring stick."
"Ram the charge down the barrel."
"Return your scouring stick."
"Prime your pan with powder."
"Close the pan."
"Place the Match in the Jaws."
"Make sure it reaches the pan."
"Blow your match one last time."
"Open the pan."
"Aim."
"Give fire."

BOOOOM-CLANK!

The Helmet is sent flying by the force of the projectile and the crowd gives applause to his shot while the smoke was still clearing.

Prince Stannis looks at the weapon and smirks for a moment before giving to Ser Davos.
"Complicated loading procedure, but a clever design I must admit. I shall take you and your ship under my service as you requested and we will shall see how you fare."
"I take it you will accept the Matchlocks as a gift then?"
"Take them to my ship. I will find a use for them when time comes, but I must return to work."
Stannis turns around and starts heading back to his tower.

You turn to the crowd and clap your hands together.
"Alright noble ones! Show is over. We'll be packing our things together now."

> Congratulations! You impressed Stannis!
> Congratulations! The Red Keep is talking about you!
> Congratulations! The Crown is covering your crew's expenses!

You watch with Ser Davos as your men pack up the Matchlocks into crates and pass them on to Stannis' men. Well, technically you're one of Stannis' men now as well.

"You've a very complicated rigging on your ship Ser Arthur."
Ser Davos tells you as he tries to shield his eyes from the sun with his has.
You put your arms on your hips
"Really? That's what you pay attention to? Not the Cannons, not the swivel guns, not the ostentatious officer's quarters, but my sail rigging? Why do I even bother to try and impress?"
He gives you that salty sea dog shrug and smile
"I was a smuggler by trade before being knighted by Stannis. Knowing how to gauge a ship's speed by eye was a an important skill to learn for a man of such profession."
"And? What's your verdict?"
"I doubt my cog could outrun this ship. Not on first glance at least."
"I should hope so. I did put a lot of time, money and effort into building and designing this ship. Speaking of money..."
"Yes, of course."
He takes a leather tube and hands it to you.
You take out the scroll and begin reading it out loud.

"To Ser Arthur Tallon.

As part of the King's fleet in active duty, you are to receive payments of 50 Gold Dragons a month for the salaries, equipment and general maintenance of your ship.

Your position as a Captain in the King's Fleet grants you tax exemption on any and all tolls and harbor fees within the Borders of the Seven Kingdoms and the right to keep and bear Siege Weapons under the King's authority.
As part of the King's Fleet you are given the right to a share on plunder seized from pirates, smugglers and other such unlawful folk they apprehend.

Your duties will be such as determined by either your admiral, the King's Master of Ships, the King's hand or the King himself at their leisure."
"Decent salary if I catch criminals it seems."
You return the scroll to its container and hang it from your belt.
"Have we any active orders?"
"The fleet is told to standby and wait for orders for the time being."
"Very well then. Shore leave it is."

The Men had finished securing the package to a wagon and were waiting around for the word to go.

"It seems the lads are done."
"I'll see Lord Stannis receives your gift. Welcome to the fleet Ser Arthur. I'll send someone to bring you your flag."
"Have a good one Ser Davos."

Right... Calm before the Storm. What now?

My thoughts were that our family would want us to serve the Tyrells if anyone since it might effect them "oh your son with the big magic boom things went and joined the kings fleet who we all fought against not so long ago, well fuck you" but I suppose it makes more sense for our own advancement, and gives them a certain amount of prestige from our accomplishments. I still say send them a letter, and some kind of trinket. A little cannon as a paperweight or some shit.
>>
>>2444939
Your family, much like most families in Westeros is more loyal to their direct liege lord than the one above that.
However, Lord Randyll Tarly doesn't own any ports nor have a fleet.
Your family doesn't yet have that much faith in your gunpowder weapons. As neat as they are, they've never played a part in any major conflict.

Once they're proven in battle though, they'd very much like you to come back and start making those for Lord Randyll, which in turn would help make him a rivaling power to the Tyrells in the Reach.

However, serving directly under the King.
Your father will certainly like that. It's a prestigious position after all.
More prestigious than serving the Tyrells.
