You are Onishi Kana, a delinquent from another world, and you just spent the night in a tent! It reminds you of your last year in middle school when everyone took a trip to Ushitaki Onsen Iyoyaka no Sato. You actually had fun back then. Yama still trailed behind you wherever you went, but everyone was too busy having a great time to hassle him, and, by extension, you. Thinking about it, it would be nice to go camping with Yama again when you get back.

There is still another day until the cutoff time for the Chess Pieces’ War Games. Exiting the tent, you yawn with a roar and stretch your hands to the sky. Your stomach growls at you just as viciously. It seems to be time for breakfast. You’ve not seen hide nor hair of Ahab since your arrival, but you know exactly where Master Flint is. You just need to turn your head to the right and you see the old man still standing with his arms crossed in front of a single ornate door on the ground: the Training Gate where Cecily and Silver are training the younger girl in preparation for the Games.

Flint doesn’t seem the least bit tired. His weathered skin seems to glow in the early morning light and the wind subtly shifts his salt-and-pepper hair. To the left of both of you stands the camp of the Cross Guard.

Yesterday, you met the top three leaders of MAR’s last defense against the Chess. Third in command is Gaira, a man just about as old as Flint but not as much facial hair. From what you’ve observed, he’s hard man but also a big stick in the mud. You’ve not seen him in action, but from the sound of things, he’s the one responsible for teaching most of the Cross Guard how to fight.

Their Number Two man goes by the name Alan. Yesterday, you two had a friendly spar, more or less. He’s just about as stubbornly serious as Gaira, but younger and with a much hotter temper. He’s got a good ARM on him and seems to be the one more suited to a leadership role than their number one, but you understand why he’s not.

After all, Danna, the Cross Guard’s Number One, is also from another world. Interestingly, he’s also from Japan, though he’s from Tokyo while you are from Osaka. You expect he might actually be as strong as you (maybe even a little stronger since he’s an adult man, but you’d never admit that to anyone) and seems to be the heart and soul of the Cross Guard’s defense with his cheerful personality and magnetic charisma.

All this review is making you enormously hungry.

>Check in the Cross Guard’s camp for breakfast.
>See if Flint has plan for eating.
>Find Ahab, he’s probably hunted down some food already.
>Check at the castle, maybe the refugees there have some grub.
>You’re tough, hunt your own breakfast!

You put aside your hunger for a moment and decide to track down your wayward companion. You can kind of understand why might have wanted some time alone. Almost immediately after returning from your own trips into the Training Gate, Ahab killed some Chess Rook that had been causing Flint some trouble while he had been tied down to the Gates. You had meant to confront him on that, but between the guy being Chess and the discovering of what the Chess did to Flint and Cecily's hometown, you aren't so appalled by the killing as you were then.

Judging from where he'd been heading before you went to talk to the Cross Guard, you think he was probably headed to what probably remains of the castle's docks. You aren't all that surprised; he is a man of the sea, after all.

Sure enough, there he is. Ahab is sitting down with a fishing rod next to a small campfire on what remains of the stone masonry by the piers. A few small fish are being cooked, the smell causes your stomach to growl again.

>Sneak up on him and surprise him.
>Announce yourself and sit down next to him.

Now that you have him, what are you going to do?

>Ask him why he went all lone-wolf on you now.
>Ask him if he's doing okay. The last couple of days were pretty rough, even for someone like him and you.
>Ask him how the fish are biting.
>Ask him something else? [Write in your own questions.]

"Yo." You call out as you approach. Ahab turns his head to look and, seeing that it's you, nods and offers a grunt in acknowledgement before returning his attention to his line. You simply keep walking until you are next to and sit down, your legs dangling off the ledge still several feet above the waterline.

"So how are the fish biting?" You decide to start off with a little small talk.

"Surprisingly well, all things considered." He responds in a neutral voice. "Thought that the Chess's attack would have scared them off for another couple of days, but here they are. Resilient little fuckers, if you ask me. You can smash their home all you want, but they'll always return like nothing happened. It'd be an admirable trait if they weren't some of the dumbest creatures on the planet." You can't help but to laugh at that.

"I think I know a fisherman by that description too." You nudge him and laugh again. You manage to get a faint smile and brief chuckle out of him with it.

>Ask if he'll split his catch with you. You're hungry, dammit!
>Ask him how he's doing. Last few days weren't the greatest.

Your stomach growls loudly to remind you of its situation and one of the main reasons you came here. You reach behind you and take one of the grilled fish away from the fire, testing it to make sure its cooked thoroughly.

"Hey, Ahab, I'm hungry. I'm taking one of these fish." You notify him as you take a bite. He turns sharply and opens his voice to protest, but you've already got a mouthful of seafood. He simply sighs, resigned to reality, and mutters to himself. "It's pretty good. You should eat the other one before it overcooks." You warn him.

"I'll eat it when I'm ready to eat it!" He mouths off as he reels in his line. He examines the line and the fishless lure and shakes his head in disapproval before casting it back out and letting the conversation collapse into a long silence.

"Have you met with the Cross Guard yet?" You try to keep the conversation up.

"Nope. Not interested in it either." He remains coldly obstinate.

"Thought you'd have found their leader pretty interesting. He's from another world, too." You tease in a little information to whet his appetite. You get a raised eyebrow from him and he turns his attention from his rod to you.

"Bull."

"For real. He calls himself Danna. And crazy enough he's actually from the same country as me!" You laugh a little again. Even now its such a bizarre coincidence to think about.

"Maybe I should see them eventually." Ahab sighs and relents to you. "Now if you don't mind, I'd like to get back to fishing. You're scaring away the fish."

>"Whatever, asshole. I was done asking questions anyway."
>"...So about what happened the other day..."

>take out our kanabo and do hit it against a rock in the water. If there isn't one, throw one in and then do that. The shockweave should send a bunch of fish upward to eat. With so much fish, he'll have to stop turning us away and actually talk. And if he doesn't want to, he can help us bring the fish back. People need to eat before the fight.

"Whatever, asshole." You give him a light tap on the shoulder with your fist and jump to your feet. "I was done asking questions anyway."

"Yeah, yeah..." He rolls his eyes and goes back to his fishing. You take one last look back at the man and wonder if people think you're this stubborn.

"Oh, and I'm taking this other fish for old man Flint. He's still stuck out there with the training gate!" Before he can react, you grab the other fish and sprint away from his fishing spot. That's what he gets for being such an asshole when you were just here to check on his well-being!

There still quite a lot of time left before the Games begin. What do you want to do?

>I nabbed this fish, might as well actually give it Flint and also see how Cecily is doing.

You wander back towards your campsite, but something catches your senses over in the Cross Guard camp. A commotion of some kind? Is there a fight going on? Your furrow your brow and alter course to check in on your new allies.

There are some interesting looking characters scrambling around, calling out in a cacophony of alarms, threats, and warcries.

You shove your way through to see what all the fuss is about. In the center you see a distressed looking boy with long, honey-colored hair as well as that large man you remember seeing with Gaira when you first entered the camp. What was his name again? Shit, you weren't really paying attention at the time to that. Regardless, you see him there, looking rather beat up.

"Kyaaa! Nooo! I don't really like these big crowds!" The boy wails, looking for an escape route of some kind.

That's when you notice the caste-shaped earring hanging from his ear. There's a Chess Piece in the camp.

>Hop in to help the large man with the shovel ARM.
>Loudly demand to know what the FUCK is going on here?
>Shove the man out of the way so you can take out this Chess on your own.
>See what's gonna happen. Its a chance to see how the rank and file of the Cross Guard fare against Chess goons.

You can't believe all these grown men just standing around and letting one of their own just get beat on by some punk Chess in their own goddamned camp! You shove a few out of the way as you enter the the circle formed by the Cross Guard.

"Yo. Can't let you Cross Guard have all the fun now." You cross your arms, sneer and shout defiantly. You voice drowns out the the jeers and calls of the men surrounding the fight. "Plus, I do love a game of whack-a-mole!" Your sneer morphs into a wild grin as you bring out your Kanabo and do a little posturing.

The large man in the tank top is the first to turn to look at you. His face is scuffed with dirt, sweat and a few scrapes, but otherwise looks more tired than injured.

"Oh hey! I remember you!" He laughs and plants his shovel in the ground. "You're the girl that started shouting at Gaira yesterday. Kana, right? I'm Jake; not sure if I introduced myself." You nod your head. "That's great that you're ready to lend a hand, but you really shouldn't have to worry so much over me." He laughs again, but it seems you've caught the attention of the Chess boy now.

"Your Kana? Nemo really has taken a liking to you! Rougarou as well! I have to say, I'm looking forward to the games now. I was really worried that there wouldn't be any good fighters participating." He meekly rubs the back of his head and bow apologetically. "I'm very thankful to Mr. Jake here for having this spar, but his friends are making me a bit nervous. I think I've got a but of stage fright."

"Blah, blah, blah." You give your ARM a test swing. "I don't really care. You're here, you're Chess, so I'm gonna beat you til your half dead!"

>Charge him now and give him a good smack on the noggin!

In an unexpected turn of events, you release your Kanabo. You're sure your fists are more than enough to deal with a punk Rook dumb enough to wander into camp. You rush forward, planning to give him the pounding of a lifetime.

"Ah! Kana, wait!" Jake shouts to you, but you're already in the middle of your assault. You see Rolan smile softly as a ring on his finger glows.

>Abort and dodge whatever is coming! [Roll me 3d6]

Your eyes narrow as you grit your teeth and change target. Rather than punching him in his fucking pretty boy face, you aim your punch downward at his hand in an attempt to smash the ring-type ARM before it can be called out.

The bad news is you do not make it in time.

The good news, though, is your heavy fists manage to force out of his hands what appears to be some kind of sword. Its black blade is thin and comes to a needle point, which is a bit odd, seeing how most ARMs you've seen aside from Guardian arms tend to be a uniform silver.

Everyone goes silent. The Rook boy is staring at you with wide eyes while clutch the hand you punch. You guess you probably did a bit of damage to him he wasn't expecting. The rest of the Cross Guard spectating the brawl, including Jake, are trying to pick their jaws off the ground. They've clearly never seen anyone go toe-to-toe with the Chess with just their bare hands before.

Without wasting any time, you take another swing while your opponent is stunned. With a resounding "CRACK!" you lay him out cold. The crowd remains completely silent as you wipe the kid's blood off your knuckles and turn to face them. You fold your arms across your chest again and take a commanding pose, holding a snarl on your face and keeping a fierce fire in your eyes.

"MY NAME IS ONISHI KANA AND I CAME HERE FROM ANOTHER WORLD TO TEACH THESE BITCH-ASS CHESS PUNKS A FUCKIN' LESSON!" You shout in a threatening tone to the awestruck crowd around you. You hear murmurs in the crowd as the Cross Guard slowly come back to their senses.

"Another world?"

"No wonder she's so ludicrously strong!"

"She's like a demon!"

"No, she's just like Danna!"

"HELL YEAH!"

"THE CHESS DON'T STAND A FUCKIN' CHANCE!"

"YEAH!"

The crowd slowly erupts into the praise that should be heaped on you by underlings as is appropriate and you can't help but smile in pleasure of it. Of course while this is happening, the Rook you knocked out has come to and is picking himself off of the ground with some audible effort.

"Wow. So you're from another world, too? We were only expecting Danna to be the trump card, but I guess this'll make things a lot more... interesting." He wipes the stream of blood coming from his nose and mouth onto his sleeve, still smiling brightly; which only serves to piss you off again.

"Well this is all I really came for, so I'll be going now! Thank you for your demonstration." He bows politely before activating another ARM. Suddenly, large, feathery wings burst out from his shoulders, sending nearby Guards soaring back from the force as the boy propels himself through the air.

"See you in the games, Ms. Kana!" He waves before flying somewhere behind the castle.

"Wow. Can't say I was expecting any of that." Oh yeah, Jake was here. He places a hand on your shoulder while watching the Chess boy disappear. "But anyway, thanks for that. Looks like I need to step up my training if I'm going to keep up with the likes of you, Danna, Alan or Gaira." He laughs again before turning to leave the area himself.

Likewise, the crowd of Cross Guard begins to dispurse; their entertainment having come to a close. A few are still in the area that you could potentially talk to, but then again, you still have that fish to deliver to Flint.

>Flint's been waiting for a bit. He's probably hungry.

Yeah, you've wasted enough time. You kind of feel bad about Flint being stuck out in a field all by himself and unable to move. The fish is starting to get cold, so you think its about time you get it to him.

Flint is standing right where you left him with his arms crossed, gazing wistfully at the horizon.

"Hey old man!" You call out to him in a flat tone. "I got you some breakfast, so be grateful. Its a little late, but I had to deal with some garbage around the Cross Guard camp." You hand him the stick with the fish on it. For a moment, Flint looks surprised, but that quickly shifts into a warm smile and a sweet glimmer in his old eyes. He places a hand on your head again, though you act swiftly to remove it with a huff.

"Thank you, Kana. I'm not sure what this old man has done to earn this kind of pampering, but its appreciated."

>You didn't, its just cause we wanted to give Ahab a hard time.

I don't like owing people things."You try to wave off his praise for such a small, inconsequential act. It feels weird to get thanked for something like this. You feel your face heat up slightly as the old man lightly laughs again.

"I suppose so, young lady."

"Be-Besides, I really just did it to give Ahab a hard time since he's so set on playing the lone wolf." You stammer about another excuse. Stop laughing like that, Flint, it's just a stupid fish!

"Just... shut up and eat!" You blurt out in frustration storm off. You were going to ask about Cecily and SIlver, but now you're just too flustered to carry on a conversation with the old man.

Damnit! That old man is just pissing you off! You storm off back to the Cross Guard camp. Maybe you can let off some of that steam with some sparring. You kick a stone in your anger with all your might...

and watch it disappear over the horizon. Goddamn. You probably can't just spar anyone here. Most of the Cross Guard wouldn't survive a round with you. Outside of Gaira, Alan and...

"Yoooo~ Kana-cha~~n!"

Danna.

"Heeey! I heard you beat up on some Chess guy that came to spy on us! Good job out there! I wish I could have seen it!" The Japanese man smiles widely and offers you a friendly hand shake. "Say, you're looking a little flushed, Kana-chan. Are you feeling okay?"

"I'm fine!" You snap at him and fold your arms across your chest. Who said it was okay for him to use such a casual honorific with your name?! Damnit, you're just getting more and more pissed off!

"Danna. Spar with me. I need to blow off a little steam." You demand from him.

"Ah! You want to fight me?" He sounds shocked, pointing at himself in confusion. "Well, I guess that would make sense. We're both from another world so our strength outmatches pretty much everyone here. Not even Alan and Gaira, though they make up for it with ARM skill and Magic Power. You know what? Sure! Let's have a quick match!" He smiles and offers you a thumbs up.

You crack a smile and toss your coat off to the side. You want to have every advantage you can against this guy.

"Hm? You're not going to use any ARMs? Oh so you just want to practice the basics, then!" Danna is clueless, and it ticks you off even more. "In that case, I'll do the same. It'll be nice to see what you can do for myself." He laughs lightly before taking a defensive stance.

>Take the initiative and throw a jab at his face!
>Rush in and put a right across his jaw!
>Be more tactical and use a feint before kicking his legs out from under him.

You take a quick couple of steps in, flicking out your left fist tremendous speed. Back in your world, you were more than just an intimidating presence to the bullies that attempted to torment your childhood friend. You were the delinquent Onishi Kana and the number one brawler in school! Your technique was developed on the street and tempered with the blood of the ones foolish enough to try to target you or Yama.

You're opponent is older and quite possibly stronger, but you've got more fighting experience. His block is blow clean away, the force of your hit staggering him backwards allowing you a free shot across his jaw.

"Uwaah! That's an impressive hit, Kachan!" Danna calls out, rubbing his chin where you struck him. He's just making you angrier calling you that. You don't know him well enough for him to earn that honor.

"Don't shorten my name, damnit!" You shout back at him.

"How scary!" He laughs before narrowing his eyes. What's with all these lackadaisical people and suddenly turning serious!? Danna quickly makes up the difference to bring the fight in close and goes in to kick your legs out from under you as well as throwing a swift right hook.

>Try to step off to the left and dodge both.
>You're a tough girl, ignore the attacks and just launch another strike of your own!

Shit! His attack puts you in a strange place, and forces you to utilize a more interesting strategy.

You quickly leap up, removing yourself from his trip, and twist your body in air so it is parallel to the ground. With all your might, you force both of your legs through the air to kick the Japanese man square in the chest. You can feel the grin spread across your face as you watch his expression warp in what feels likes slow motion before Danna is sent flying away from you several feet. You catch yourself as gravity catches up with you and forces you to the ground.

"How do you like that!?" You throw out a taunt at the dust cloud where Danna has rolled to a stop is.

"Ow." You hear him respond. "Yup you're definitely strong. I'm glad you're fighting with us instead of against us. It would have been painful to try to fight you as an enemy." The dust finally clears and you see the grown man standing again. His clothes are dirtier now and he is wiping a string of spit you must have forced out of him when you kicked him.

>Charge him again and hit him with a right!
>Keep him at a distance. Start throwing rocks.
>Go in and get some body blows on him.
>Nah, that's enough for now. I'm feeling better. [End the Fight]

"Well, I'm not, so be grateful." You dust off your pants and walk casually over to the man. You still have that smile on your face, but it seems that Danna is smiling as well.

"I am, I am, Kana-chan." He laughs sheepishly as he plops down on the grassy field and stares up at the blue skies.

"Hey Kana. Do you love this world?"

"What?" The question catches you off-guard. You look to him and his face is almost neutral, but with a warm, gentle twist at the corners of his mouth that could be considered a smile.

>This place is great. There's magic, and pirates, and knights! It's fantastic.
>Honestly, I've been dreaming about this place since I was little. Coming here is a literal dream come true. Of course I love it.
>Sure, this place is nice, but I also want to be able to go home, you know?

"I like it here a lot... but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't homesick. Even then, I can't just leave things the way they are. There are good folks suffering because of those Chess punks and I'm not gonna stop until they pay for their crimes. With interest."

Do you love this world? That's an odd question. You've been dreaming about it since you were little. To be able to see it for real is like a miracle come true! But its clear this world is sick, and maybe its the only reason you were even called upon.

"I like it here a lot..." You start, Danna's warm smile encouraging you on, "but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't homesick."

"I can understand that. Its a rough thing to leave everything you knew for something completely different." The blonde man nods. You continue your thoughts.

"Even then, I can't just leave things the way they are. There are good folks suffering because of those Chess punks and I'm not gonna stop until they pay for their crimes. With interest." You pound a fist in your other hand as emphasis in your conviction. You can't forgive these assholes for making this world -the world you've been dreaming of for so long- feel this pain! You'll show them what happens when people mess with the things and people you care about!

A hand is placed gently on your shoulder. You look and see that Danna's grin has widened, it kind of reminds you of the face your dad would make whenever you quoted a character from the TV.

"Then you and I are the same! Let's save this world together!" The blonde man stands up, offering his hand to you.

> "Idiot, that's already what we're doing."
> "Right!"
> Smile and take his hand
> Scowl and storm off.

"Idiot." You grin and take his hand. "We're already doing that." Danna just smiles and laughs.

"I guess we are, aren't we. Well, then I should see to the troops." He lets go and turns from you. "I'll see you at the Games tomorrow then. The Chess have quite the debt to pay."

What a weird man, you think to yourself.

>Go spy on the Chess. The more you find out about their strength, the more prepared you can be.
>Go talk with some more of the Cross Guard. A good understanding of your allies should help out in the fights.
>Go check with the refugees. Things looked pretty rough from a distance.
>Do some training on your own. Have to be on top of your game for the Games.
