/qst/ - Quests

You are a denizen of the Imperium of Man, the largest known political entity in the Milky Way galaxy. You currently live in Remanor, your homeworld, barely a man with 20 terran summers behind your back. You've lived a comfortable life in Remanor, as it is an Imperial World where basic commodities are readily available and self-sufficiency has been a key undertaking by the past few generations.

Sadly, not all is well in Remanor. In the Adrecharan deserts, above the Ruckor peninsula where you currently live, various towns and tribes have risen up against what they call Imperial oppression. This event ocurred barely a few days ago, and the people now fear conscription by the local PDF forces, which weren't ready for such a large scale rebellion.

It doesn't worry you much though, as you've always been a strong and burly man. Your physical prowess always shone to your peers, and you were quickly made a local law enforcer. It wasn't easy at first, as law enforcers are usually shunned, but you steeled yourself and made the better of it. Now that war comes, you feel much readier than your factory-working neighbours.

In the academy, you were taught to use:
>Melee weapons. Using your brawn always came naturally to you. Though the local law enforcement rarely had anything better than batons to practice with, you learned how to handle them rather well.
>Guns. You're not the best shot around, but you know that a fight is usually won at a range, with guns. You're hoping to learn more about them in the future.
>>
>>2401253
Before being deployed as a law enforcer, you also recieved a crash course on:
>Offence. You know that the best defence is a good, direct, brutish offence. Sometimes, a good punch to the gut is more convincing than a long winded argument with a citizen.
>Finesse. You know that learning analising your opponent and making sure that you have a plan for each and every one of them is the best option.
>Defence. The suburbs you were in weren't exactly the nicest place around, and as a law enforcer it was often best to keep yourself alive in a fight just to be ready for the next one.

You also have a trusty weapon for self-defence, just in case some unwelcome guest barges into your house:
>A truncheon from the academy. A stick will do the trick.
>A solid projectile revolver. The farther away an enemy is from you, the more likely you are to not suffer extreme injury.

Some rules:
>This quest will basically use a under 1d100 system, with different dice for damage.
>It uses the Only War system for the most part, modified if fun/cool factor gains enough weight.
>The QM posting rate will be 1-2 per day most of the time. More if I feel like procrastinating.
>Votes count until the next post arrives, no definite time set, but usually a bunch of hours will pass between one post and another. That's plenty of time to put in a vote.
>Why so slow? I don't want the QM curse to devour me, and I'd like to work on the finer details in this quest. I'm also learning the Only War system, so most posts will take a long while to prepare.
>If I don't post for a day, it's usually gonna come with a warning. If no warning comes, something came up and I couldn't find the time to post, I hope it won't happen though.
>Usually, the move that will make you not get hurt is the better move.
>Character sheet will be available.

You've spent a good part of your early youth practicing with guns, mostly your family's old revolver that they so graciously gave to you when you left home. It's an old bastard, but it's the most reliable piece of work you've ever had the chance to witness, it nearly never jams, you're actually having a hard time remembering when it jammed for the last time. It's not the deadliest piece of work though, more of a deterrent really, and its reload is painfully slow, you should've bought the speedloader instead of leaving it for later every day.

It's not like the local law enforcement forces had much better equipment. You remember having to plan out every single detail of a raid against underground mafias with fellow law enforcers because of a lack of actual weaponry. Every single shot counted, and you made them count, as even bullets were scarce in your department, some higher up must've had some beef with your chief.

Gained Finesse Aptitude: Your careful planning and cautiousness saves up quite a deal of ammo and lives. You stick by this value.
Gained the Quick Draw Talent: Drawing weapons in battle is now a free action!
Gained a leather belt and a leather holster: Handcrafted by your mother and grandmother.
Gained a Stub Revolver: This old trusty revolver is the most reliable thing you know, but it doesn't pack much firepower.
Gained 24 Revolver Bullets

As you give a final clean and check to your old revolver, you remember your days back in the family ranch, taking care of cattle and other strenuous physical activities. This life is less likely to destroy your back and more likely to kill you in an instant, but at least you don't have to spend hours under the scorching sun of the Kirograv grasslands anymore, lugging grain and dung around.
>>
>>2402124
A knock is heard on your door. You load up the old thing with bullets and keep it in your belt's leather holster, mother's final gift before you left the ranch. You check who's outside through the door sight, sure enough, it's a PDF soldier clad in flak armor and helmet.

You open the door. "Yes? Is there something I can help you with?"

"Hello citizen, I am here to inform you that the PDF has issued a state of emergency across the city. All locals must report to a local PDF tent and inform of their skills to the PDF Captain there present. You will afterwards be assigned to a militia squad led by a Sergeant and be issued weaponry and armor."

The man keeps a steady position, he's large and strong, but not as much as you. He does seem a bit afraid, as if wondering if he got the wrong house. Seeing that, you take a hand to your belt.

"I'm a member of the local law enforcement. Aren't I most needed with peacekeeping here in the city?" You ask. Maybe there's a way out of this mess.

"That's not for me to decide, citizen." The soldier seems to not balk under your pressure.

>Comply with the soldier's orders. You will talk with the Captain and see where he appoints you.
>Comply with the soldier's orders but ask him which Captain gives the drafted the best care. You think you'll need to convince him, as neighborhoods must have a specific Captain assigned to them and him telling you would count as insubordination. Your size might make this easier though.
>Try to coax some info out of him. Could he point you to a way out of this draft? You don't really know your way around words but your size may be enough to sway him.

You nod, giving up on your now somewhat heretical sounding thoughts. You wonder if this soldier would've reported you to the Ecchlesiarchy had you asked what you were thinking to ask. Emperor be praised, you didn't ask at all.

"Alright then, soldier. I'll accompany you to the nearest tent. Anything I should pick up before leaving?" You ask him.

"The kit that you will be given will have everything you need. You needn't worry, citizen."

"I can bring my revolver and clothing right?"

"Yes, I see no issue with it. Hopefully the Colonel won't either. Honestly, the more guns we get the better it'll be for us." You see the soldier relaxing, somewhat glad that you did not oppose his orders. You must be the first in a while that didn't beg or threaten to try to squeeze their way out of the draft.

As you accompany the soldier, you make up some more small talk, it seems he has warmed up to you. "So, will you be fighting with me then?" You ask.

"Who knows? You'd probably be a better squaddie than most of my current squadmates. As far as I know, the militia units will be separated from actual trained PDF for now, being kept as a reserve until you've recieved some training." As you go along, you see some more soldiers trying to convince able-bodied males and females to join up the draft. You're glad to see that they didn't just ring up the local Priest. That would've been a horrid sight, man's not one for mercy.

"How much time is that gonna be? The training, I mean."

"As long as we can hold the front, and let me tell you, with the reports we've recieved, that won't even be a day. We're cut off land wise, so we'll need to recieve support through ships. Bastards even stole some Hydra-, Anti-Air I mean, from the local PDF bases." The soldier starts to realize that he might be barking too much info, and shuts his mouth. You nod to him, a silent agreement that you won't tell anyone.

You both finally get out of the apartment building, and after a short walk you reach a bunch of tents with long lines waiting for them. Emperor bless, it seems it wasn't necessary to bring out less advantaged people, most of the people you see here are somewhat fit youngsters. You notice an explosion of the khaki colour as well.

Most of the dressed militias have full gear, helmet and vest, you see some autoguns, some shotguns, and a whole bunch of pistols and lever-action rifles. The militias look at them oddly and explore every nook and cranny of their new, still unloaded, weapons. You see some lads with autopistols and you can tell they have no idea what they are doing with them.

"Here it is, pick the shortest line and wait, they'll all give you the same stuff anyhow." He comments. "I have to leave, a post in the front is waiting for me."

"These people don't even know where the trigger is." You tell him.

"Well, a day is enough time to find out where the trigger and safeties are, and how to reload. I hope their guns won't jam." He replies with a bit of a sigh. "At least the Emperor's on our side, eh?"

You nod in agreement, overlooking the rest of the soldiers, you see a few that seem to know what they are doing.

The soldier redresses his flak vest and helmet, you notice they're a bit small for a man his size. Stockpiles probably weren't ready for a large scale rebellion. He's ready to depart.

>You offer him a handshake and ask his name. You'd like to see this man again someday.
>You say goodbye to the soldier, and wish the Emperor's Blessings upon him.
>You take off to the nearest line and say goodbye with a wave.

Anyhow, I want you boys to give me a name for the protagonist along with a vote on the above decision.

What, no Lasguns, or are those for full imperium guardsman?

I wonder if the PDF have a few speed loaders and ammo for our revolver. Maybe even a scope (is that weird?) What's the caliber?
>>
>>2402616

>>
Scratch that. If they have any weapons then I vote we get an autogun, but if we can get that then a shotgun, or bolt action rifle. Also a spare side arm.
>>
>>2402672
I'd prefer a bolt action rifle over a shotgun, go full cowboy in the imperium wastes
>>
>>2402677
I'd prefer to not get ripped apart by some Ork Yoof due to our aesthetic tastes. Let's put not dying horribly before looking cool.
>>
>>2402662
Lasguns are for full guardsmen, yes. The world you're in has a few IG regiments, but they're mostly off-world and lasguns are an extremely rare sight.

The PDF has speedloaders, but you'll have to ask the soldier in charge of the tent you're in, see if they have a spare one. Scopes for revolvers isn't too weird, it's been seen before. You can ask for one as well but they're a much rarer sight.

>>2402672
You'll see when we get to it.

>>2402691
>>2402677
As I said, cool factor can come into play and give you easier rolls at times, but this'll be in spare occasions that really ask for them. Picking Finesse is great to make Sniper characters, which is going to be the most fitting class for a cowboy type character, delivering death at long range with weapons with a low rate of fire and high damage.

The protag's stats hinted more towards a melee warrior, but you'll have that as a failsafe if the enemy ever gets close and personal.

Anyhow, there will be more opportunities to advance the character, both in terms of stats and gear.

A personal suggestion and one thing I never got. Is how they had powder guns but NO heavy Anti Material Rifles. I always house-ruled them in as a gun equivalent to hard-hitting laser snipers. Except being bulkier, more primitive, and packing a serious punch.

I mean there is such thing as hand cannons and machine guns with high str checks so why not the long-range rifle equivalent?

Though a serious advantage that gun weapons have is the range of special ammo you can use. Making them very adaptable compared to flashlights.

Basically, a cheapo easy repair weak bolter that anyone can use in terms of how adaptable they can. Obviously they don't pack nearly as big a bunch of a bolter but the adaptable ammo types is very nice.
>>

You mean like these?

>>
>>2402633
Yes
>>
>>2402983
It was a big heavy sniper rifle. Long range and relatively low tech but could still pack a serious punch.

Something like
http://dark-heresy-rp.wikia.com/wiki/Anti-Material_Rifle

I mainly used it as a sniper rifle for forces who were using slugthrower weapons still. Yet needed an actual long range hard hitting sniper weapon. So I homebrewed it. Never made any sense to me that they had autoguns, hand cannons, and autocannons but no actual sniper rifle equivalent.

The downside is its slow firing, heavy, and rather bulky for a sniper weapon, but it hits real hard. Throw in the different ammo types and suddenly it's surprisingly good weapon.

Before he leaves, you offer your hand for a handshake. He looks at it for a moment, he doesn't seem used to handshakes yet he takes it up with a firm hand regardless. "What's your name?" You ask him.

"Bragal Stemp, from the higher Rocklands." he answers. The higher Rocklands, sturdy people come from there, but this lad seems more used to the PDF city life by now. "You?"

"I'm from the Kirograv Grasslands, name's-", you are interrupted by a rather sullen looking woman putting a hand on the soldier's shoulder, a badly healed scar runs across her face. She wears a fancy looking military suit, and is just as tall as the both of you, yet thinner. You're somewhat taken by her looks, but an unflinching, depreciating stare sends your eyes to the ground.

"Bragal, you were supposed to have joined up with the platoon by now. A moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy." She looks again to Bragal, her ponytail flinging to a side and her deep brown eyes bearing the nastiest frown you've seen in your life.

When Bragal hears the last sentence, he props up an Imperial salute. "Lieutenant. Yes lieutenant!" he shouts, then marching off towards the other side of the street. The woman gives you one last glare, still as nasty, before walking off with Bragal.

"Emperor bless you, Brugal." You mutter, not wanting to take any chances with the angered woman.

Man, she was pretty-looking. But no time to dally, you got lucky enough to attract the attention of the prettiest woman of the PDF, wouldn't want to anger some old ugly bastard now. The Emperor blessed you with luck this time, better make it count.

You get into a line, the wait is somewhat excruciating. The line moves rather slowly, as gearing up a civilian and teaching him what not to press or pull before they are trained is a rather arduous task. By the time you reach the line, you see a bored looking soldier of the PDF manning the stand, with two others taking notes. It's not the Captain that Bragal mentioned, his insignia bearing a private's chevron.

"Profession, personal weaponry, place of birth, and name." he says, you'd think he's some sort of dispensing machine from the planetary capital with the way he asks. You don't want to pry though, lest you get nastier gear than the rest.

"Local cop, slug revolver, Armstrong ranch in the Kirograv Grasslands, Bolter Gareth Armstrong." You reply dryly, waiting for the soldier to write down everything, you check the gear being prepared, it seems you'll be getting a full setup.

The soldier looks up, "Bolter?" he asks with a hint of curiosity inbetween the boredom.

"My parents are odd folks, what can I say?" you shrug during your reply, a dumb smile coming off your face. The soldier nods and shrugs along, then signalling his comrades. They bring out your gear, khaki-colored too, you spot a flak vest and a flak helmet and...

A coat? You check around you, not many people are wearing coats, most of them are using the simpler flak vest. Oh, by the Emperor, does this mean?

"Congratulations, citizen, you will be given the status of corporal of the militia. Your duty includes taking care of your fireteam and assisting your sergeant with his duties in leading the squad." The words ring out of the PDF soldier with little emotion. You're not entirely sure wether this is good or not.

The cloak, helmet and fatigues are dumped on your arms. Damn, it weighs more than you anticipated, but you keep yourself together, your size is a boon once again. A few people are looking at you, a bit of awe in their eyes. You feel a pride welling up inside you, you're gonna command some men, and as scary as it sounds, you feel blessed as well.

Obtained a Flak Cloak.
Obtained a Flak Helmet.

"If you have any questions, please ask your Sergeant, err..." he looks over at his list and flips a few pages, he uses his pen to search for something written there.

"Sergeant Takhed Urayyin." he finally says, he heads back to the paper he was writing on. "Next."

You head to a nearby crate, a few of the militia there disperse to give you some space. You put on your helmet, bit tight, but it'll do the job, next is the coat, and man, that bastard is heavy. It covers your arms, body and legs rather comfortably, compared to the rest of the militia, whose vest only cover the chest and belly, you'd say you're the lucky one here.

As you finish buttoning up your cloak. You wonder about the name of your sergeant, Takhed Urayyin, it's a name from the nomadic tribes of the Adrecharan desert. That sounds like fun, your sergeant might just get to killing his own brothers right about soon.

You realize that you are currently weaponless, you check the tent you came from and notice that they weren't handing out weapons any longer. All dressed up and nice, you take off to find some booth with weapons.

After a bit, a brown skinned PDF soldier approaches you. You do stand out after all, big as you are and with a huge khaki cloak covering your body.

"You." he says. "Bolter Armstrong?"

"Bolter Gareth Armstrong, yes." you respond to him. "Sergeant Urayyin?"

"Sergeant Takhed Urayyin I am. Accompany me, militiaman." his voice is coarse, sounds like he smokes. You take a better look at the man, the helmet hides most of his black hair, it seems longer than that of the usual soldier. He's wearing a cloak like you, a sword around his belt and an autogun holstered on his shoulder.

You nod and follow, not wanting to make bad blood with the man who'll lead you to battle soon. You eventually reach a crate of weapons, both guns and melee. "Quite the luck, 'corporal' Armstrong. You choose your weapon. Not many can say they do. One gun, one melee." there is a hint of sarcasm on his voice, he puts his back onto a wall and waits.

A few weapons sit in front of you, you'd wager a long ranged weapon would be best for your fighting style, but it's not like you know how to use any of these things. You ponder and ponder, and eventually pick up...

Choose between:

>An autogun. 100 meter range, can fire in bursts of 3 and a full burst of 10. Damaging, but not as much as a shotgun up close. Uses magazines, the cartridge is standardized across the entire world.
>A shotgun. You'd wager that you wouldn't be able to miss with this thing up close, and realize that it's going to be way more damaging than the autogun below its limit range of 30 meters. The shells have to be loaded in manually, which makes this a slow weapon to reload.

Then choose between:

>A truncheon. A few good, solid hits from this weapon could knock anyone out so long as they're not wearing armor.
>A knife. Much less damaging than the truncheon, but its light enough that it can be thrown comfortably, you don't know how to do that though. You'd wager that a good stab would be more consistent when hurting the enemy, even if it'd hurt them less.

You ask Takhed if they have any autoloaders for your revolver available. He shrugs, "I'll look. Fancy officer stuff though.".

>Try to convince Takhed that giving you a speedloader is important and might save lives. The man does not seem hostile or open to talk, but considering you're not exactly a silver tongue, you might not be able to convince him.
>Ask Takhed if you can get a fancy sword like that, as his second in command. This one would be even harder to put into words, you could try though.

We will probably more busy giving orders and watching over our troops than shooting at long distances.

DC 30 for speed loader
I've spent my whole life using this revolver. from my child hood shooting plates from the fence, to my law enforcement days, which I guess sort of just ended today. All I'm saying is I'm very proficient with my gun, but reloading takes too much time. If there was a few speed loaders and rounds for my gun I'd be able to pull my own weight a lot more effectively.

Urayyin heads off to look for the speedloader you mentioned. You sit and ponder in front of the weapons and finally decide yourself. You go for the autogun, greater range, should kill or cripple mostly anyone with a well placed shot.

Then there's the knife, better than a blunt weapon, you think. As long as you go for an unprotected area of the enemy you should do some damage, maybe. You're not too sure, since you don't have actual military training with them.

You pick up the autogun and aim, index finger off the trigger, you get adjusted to the sights. It's not the best in the market but it seems like it'll do the trick considering the gun's range. Hopefully you'll get to shoot it a bit before heading to battle.

Next, you take a gander at the knife. You slash a few times in the air, you notice your movements seem slow, would you really cut someone slashing like this? You think not, but the sergeant may have another opinion.

You store the knife into its simple leather holster and add it to your belt, it fits nicely, hanging with your revolver and its bullets. You feel like a Kirograv Ranger, PDF's specops in the eastern continent. The reality of the shoddy quality of your equipment hits you soon afterwards, the Rangers usually have two or three sharp combat knives, and a modified revolver capable of putting a hole through the toughest metal.

You put your hands to your belt, looking around you, maybe someday you'll be a Ranger if all goes well. The militiamen are also playing around with the weapons they recieved or chose. You notice that the squads are starting to gather together, each seems to have a sergeant from the PDF and a colonel from the militiamen themselves. Like yours, which, you now remember, hasn't gathered yet.

A few more seconds pass before sergeant Takhed returns. You notice he's not bringing any speedloader, but he is bringing 8 people with him. They're all geared with vests and helmets, you count six with autoguns, some of the weapons seem a bit shoddy though, and two have shotguns. Two women and six men, all of them in their prime.

Takhed passes you to head towards the few crates that seem to be his territory. "No speedloader, Bolter. I found our men though." He rummages and pulls out knives for all of them. "Good for killing and cutting stuff, wash when you switch tasks." he tells them.

"You chose." he says, walking towards you. "Rifleman. Good." He turns, facing everyone. "Do you know how to shoot, men?"

They all look awkwardly at their guns, most of them say no except a woman, who says she hunts with rifles. Takhed nods as he hears the answers, then looks at you. "Do you shoot, corporal?"

"My revolver, somewhat. Never touched an autogun." you respond.

Takhed sighs wearily, it doesn't seem like he enjoys being here. He orders the militia to stand down, training will begin in a few minutes. You see Takhed heading back towards the wall, pondering.

You go to him, you've been cooking up a few questions while waiting for him and his merry band. He looks at you, not saying a word.

"What will we be receiving in terms of training?" you ask, keeping a serious demeanor.

"Shooting, melee, dodge. You will not be trained, but you will know how to shoot without killing your squadmates, it's enough." he responds, he stares at you intensely, and you notice how sharp his stare looks, probably accentuated by his blue eyes.

"What can you tell me about the rebels?" is your second question. He seems to flinch as he hears it, looks like it's a sensible topic for him.

"Fools, traitors. I can not believe I once called them my brothers and sisters. They forget their place, which is service to the God-Emperor. They will pay with their blood." He spits to the ground when he finishes, he raised his voice quite a bit on that sentence, you're not sure if you should pry further on who they are.

"How many are they?" You ask. Maybe thinking about numbers will make him forget that they're his countrymen, probably not, but you won't lose anything for trying.

"I don't know, brass knows. More than ten thousand, for sure. Militiamen mostly, some cavalry, stolen PDF emplacements and equipment." he says, regaining his composure.

"Any threat we should be on the lookout for?"

"The cavalry, strong, fast. You must calculate your shot to get them right, hard. If you see cavalry, call for shotguns and make them deal with it when they're in range.
Some of them are proud melee warriors, if you see a man with sword and pistol, back off and shoot. They also looted autocannons and a few heavy stubbers, if you see those, duck and cover."

You nod, the rest of the squad gathered around the two of you when they heard the topic of conversation.

The sergeant leaves his position on the wall and bellows "In formation!", the squad takes up a shoddy formation, not quite in line, some still have their weapons drawn, some not. A true militia.

You see that Takhed is gritting his teeth at the sight, his patience is running thin and you're afraid that he might be getting pissed. He sends off the men and women to a march, towards what you think is the direction of the improvised training grounds.

You're walking besides Takhed before reaching the training ground. You notice that he is in fact angered. The squad may suffer from a poor training if he trains them in this state, you've seen your fair share of pissed off officers when training back at the station. They were usually the most useless.

You spend a minute thinking something up. Something to convince this gruff desert man, loyal as he is to the Emperor, to get his head out of his own arse and work hard to drill these boys into proper man. You decide to go the renegade route with the bastard.

"Listen, Urayyin. No one is expecting you to make them Imperial Guard over night, they're green as gooseshit and have no idea what they're doing. Morale is already in the crapper, and unless you calm down the lot of them are just going to lie down and shoot themselves once the fighting starts because they'll have given up."

You look for his reaction it seems unflinching, at least he's not giving away whatever he's feeling right now. "You want to kill the enemy? You want to do our planet proud? calm down, least until we get to battle."

He sighs and he seems to relax somewhat, but you're not sure how well it hit him. He moves forward a little bit, it seems like he'll need time for himself.
Roll 1d100 to see the effects of your little speech on Sergeant Urayyin, best out of 3 DC 50.

After seeing your fiery speech, one of your current squaddies approaches you. He seems very young, barely an adult. It's not like you're much older, but this one seems even younger than you.

"Colonel Armstrong?" He says, doubt filling his voice.

"Yes, squaddie?"

"You think we can live through this? The rest of us I mean. I think the huntress is confident, but everyone else is filled with doubt, we think the sarge don't trust us." he looks at you, expectantly, hoping for a positive answer. You don't know if the truthful answer is actually positive, but it would be no good for morale.

You realize that the squad morale is Poor.

You look back at the rest of the squad, it's obvious that all except the huntress are awaiting your response expectantly. She seems to be more concentrated on the ins and outs of her gun.

"I'm not the one you should ask." You respond to the boy. You point to Sergeant Urayyin, who has stopped right in front of a large enclosure adapted as a training ground, you count two other squads worth of men in there, already training melee fighting with fake knives. Urayyin observing them closely. You think it's your platoon, the rest of the men you'll be coordinating with during battle.

The boy seems filled with even more doubt, asking Urayyin must seem like the worst idea right now. You encourage him with a hardy pat on the back. "Come on then."

Prodded forward, the lad approaches Takhed, you see him speaking a few words to him. And Takhed looks at him with surprise in his eyes, then to the rest of the squad.

"Gather to me, all." he yells before stepping onto a small sturdy crate. He crosses his arm on his back, and takes his feet apart, a leader's pose, if you've ever seen one.

The squad complies, you check them all up, see what they're made of. Seems like the young man could be a fast little kid, the huntress is skinny but has some muscle on her, she seems hardy. The other woman seems more used to the city life, to put it someway, but if she's a good shot her foes will still have hell to pay. The rest of the men vary between early twenties and late twenties, they all seem like they'll hold their own, two of them seem strong like oxes, not as big as you though. Pride goeth before the fall, you remember, better act more humble.

You join in on them and look at sergeant Takhed. He seems as decided as he could be. Hell, you'd say he's emanating an aura of authority around him, the curved sword and long cloak probably helps with that. Couldn't look more like a sarge right now.

"Citizens of the Imperium." He bellows first, getting the attention of the men training as well, not that they're letting up, as their own sergeants are watching over them closely.

"You have been chosen for the most holiest of duties a man or woman could ever hope to have. And that is to fight in the name of the Emperor against those that betrayed His will. Fear not death, for those that fall will recieve His most holy of embraces." He yells, his voice grave, unwavering.

"I will train you, drill you, make you into a militia that is respectable and feared. The whole 1st Regiment of Remanorean Militia will come to hear of you and your deeds. You will fight, and you will live, you will fight for the Imperium one more day, and the next, and when you return to your daily lives, you will work for His holy grace. The God-Emperor watches over all of His faithful, all those who fight for His will. Inspire yourself with thoughts of his divine power, and fight with the lessons you will have learned in the next few days! Fight! Fight without succumbing to fear for your life, for fear is but a byproduct of courage! Master it, and no foe shall be too great!" His yells echo throughout the row of buildings, he raises his fist to the air and you instinctively raise yours, the rest of your comrades following along.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!" He screams.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!" your whole squad bellows in unison, voices full of passion, cracking left and right, tears overcoming some of the men. Even the seemingly uncaring huntress has violently raised her fist and yelled along with the rest of you.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!" The training squads yell as they clash against each other, their fighting intensifying.

As he brings his fist down. "Now come, we train." he says, and all of you enter the training ring together, ready to undertake the training.

Squad morale is now Great!
Rest of squads' morale have risen to Good!
>>
>>2407364
Your squad proceeds to train how to get into a decent line. Then a few marching orders and paces. Not too hard, but that's because the hard part comes now: shooting, melee, and dodging.

For the next few days, your squad will dedicate itself to training. Each day you can bring a skill up to Known, which means there will be no malus when using it. You don't know when you will be called to the front, it could be tomorrow, the day after that, or in a week. The knowledge you gather here can barely be considered true training, so the skills you've gotten up to Known will be reduced back to Untrained after a while unless extensively trained by joining the PDF or Imperial Guard. You will also be able to learn talents related to the weaponry you've picked up.

Only ONE skill/talent can be trained per day, choose wisely which you want first.

Talents that you can train:

>Solid Projectile Basic. This talent will allow you to use most standard weaponry without issue, most importantly the Autogun and Shotgun.
>Low-Tech Melee. This talent will allow you to use your knife effectively, and even learn how to throw it well. If taken with Dodge skill, you will earn the talent CQC, which gives you a bonus to melee fighting.

Skills that you can train and bring up to Known:

>Dodge. This skill will allow you to dodge incoming fire and melee without a malus. If taken with Low-Tech Melee talent, you will earn the talent CQC, which gives you a bonus to melee fighting.
>Command. Anything and everything related to commanding men and inspiring them to great deeds. As corporal you believe you should undertake this training, but you're only leading 4 men most of the time, which isn't that much.
>Athletics. Running fast. Not much else can be said about this one. It could be a great help when undertaking a long winded charge in the middle of an unstable battlefield.
>Stealth. This skill allows you to remain unseen from the enemy at large, rather useful if you find yourself stranded and alone in the middle of the battlefield.
>>
>>2407382
How votes will be counted:
Order of priority left to right. Each day will have its own vote count, if there is a tie a dice will be thrown to determine which of the tied options will be picked.

Also, the day you're currently in counts as a training day as well.

You have a skill in firing pistols, IE your revolver. It can't be translated to larger weapons too well, you'll still have a -10 malus to all rolls with them.

>>2407433
Dodge is a combat reaction, so it doesn't take up one of the two actions you can undertake per round. So you could move and attack. You're leaving yourself quite open if you do so though, you better have some mates to back you up. Also, the knife you're using isn't top quality as you'll see in the sheet.

The next few days are a constant training to withstand the hardships you'll meet in battle.

In the first day, your entire platoon trained with their weapons, learning how autoguns and shotguns work, their intricacies, when to shoot, when not to shoot and how to deal with the most common issues with them such as jamming. In your squad, at least 7 militia learned enough to fight more or less well.

You notice that the woman that isn't the huntress has not been doing too well, and one other man, older and obviously not accustomed to handiwork, have also been having a bad time. The huntress, though, she had a knack for shooting, she hadn't grabbed an autogun in her life, but she successfully hit every single one of her shots, even Sergeant Urayyin seemed amazed by her prowess.

Got Temporary Talent Weapon Training: Solid Projectile Basic
6 of your squad have ranked up from Citizen to Militia!
The huntress ranked up from Citizen to Trained Militia!
2 of your squad remain at Citizen rank.

In the second day, you noticed that one of the squads concentrated on stealth and another on running and resistance. Your squad was ordered to train their dodging skills. Assigned in pairs, you led by example with the sergeant. You didn't exactly know much, but your physical fitness made it look like it wasn't so. Sergeant Urayyin knew you were not trained though, and did not balk on his training regime with you.

Time and time again, you had to dodge the sergeant's hardy blows, you took more blows than you'd care to count. Every one of them with the man's full strength. "Bolter, it matters not how big or strong you are. If you get shot or slashed, you can count yourself dead like the rest of your comrades. Concentrate, learn how I move, react according to my body's movements." he says. You couldn't have asked for a better teacher, this man's movements are smooth and full of confidence. It's obvious that he recieved more training than the usual PDF soldier, you wonder if it's that's the level that today's PDF sergeants have to rise up to.

Got Temporary Skill upgrade. Dodge has risen from Untrained to Known

The day after that, you recieved the grave news. In two days time, your platoon would begin fighting in the western fringes of the frontline with the rebels. The area was a hilly grassland with patches of trees here and there, you remember going to that place with your parents the one time they could visit you. Now you were going to shed blood in that very same place. You think you should've sent them a letter at some point. Just in case you die and all. Some sadness overtakes you as you think of your possible death. You wish you could see the Armstrong ranch one more time, you should've lied down with that one lass, maybe you should've gone with your friend Thob to work in his cattle factory business.

You shake your head, no more thinking. An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded. You got up from your seat at the tents in your platoon's camp, washed your face a bit with the barrel of water readily available for your fireteam. You remember its components: the huntress whose name you still don't know, but everyone simply calls her Huntress by now; a man a year younger than you that showed discipline and an ability for melee fighting, name was Rogard Druns; another man, two years older than you with a knowledge of tech and medicus training, Terry Fortran, kind of shit at fighting though; and you, the corporal.

You send them off to train once again, telling them to redouble their efforts, they all salute together as if they had been drilled for weeks. The past two days have felt like weeks alright, so much had changed. You join up with Urayyin, who's also sending off his part of their squad. "You asked for me, sarge?"

"Yes, you must learn how to command. It is not as simple as it looks, all can give speeches, not all can fill their men with fighting spirit at the front." he says, rummaging through a few papers in his personal tent.

You shrug, "I wasn't trained for command, I was a cop three days ago."

Takhed smiles, a rare sight from the sergeant of iron discipline. "I know. That's why I'm here." he says, leaving a pause before continuing. "There are two extremely important things in command: Communicating with and obeying your superiors is one, communicating with and commanding your inferiors is the other." he starts. The speech he gives is long winded but you get the gist of it. You spent the entire morning trying to grasp an understanding of command theory, you're not excelling much, but it'll be better than nothing.

Got Temporary Skill upgrade. Command has risen from Untrained to Known.

In the afternoon, your whole platoon trains the basics of teamwork, who to communicate with, who to petition ammo from, who to report to according to the situations at hand. Runner roles are designated, and squad designations are drilled into your heads.

Then in the evening, as you were getting ready for dinner, a military truck came by your camp. Four PDF soldiers coming out of them, one of them was obviously high ranked. Your squad's sergeants met up with them, giving a salute, and they were off to discuss matters privately.

"Looks like our Lieutenant is here." says Rogard Druns, the young warrior. The huntress and Terry nod.

You will have time off for the rest of the night, and the news of deployment spread like a wild fire.

Well i don't mind pacing through action or periods between plot a little quickly. We haven't built up much of a connection to anyone yet but that is to be expected we are milita being tossed together in a few days.

I expect more important parts to move a bit slow and have more character development as the game picks up. So far has been good and worked well.

You take a look left and right, the platoon is busy talking about what battling will be like, the tactics our foes might end up using, the intricacies of their weapons. Some seem ridden with fear, some with courage, some on their own, pondering about one thing or another. You see a bunch kissing tokens of the God-Emperor. Faith would be our shield in the coming battle.

You don't feel like sitting with anyone right now, you feel mentally tired. The past few days have been extremely draining both physically and mentally, moreso mentally. You've come to understand that, at the very least, three lives depended on you. Who knows what might happen in the battlefield. Urayyin might just day from some stray shot and suddenly you're in charge of a full squad. Your mind rummages through a million possible situations until you decided you had enough.

Night had settled in, but this did not bother you. You looked at your knife and decided to go train, tiring yourself out would help with all the needless thinking you were doing. The darkness outside was fresh, you open the wooden fence that served as entry to the enclosed training ground, closing it back. You were all on your lonesome, a fresh breeze coursing through the night, the sounds of talks and yells in the distance, a starry, beautiful night. How many more nights would you live through? You weren't sure.

You unsheathe your knife. You take a good look at it, not the finest piece of work. No need to complain, plunge it into someone's gut hard enough and he'll feel it for a lifetime, whatever would remain of it at least. You slash once, cutting the wind. You slash again, trying to remember a few tips and tricks that Urayyin and Rogard taught you.

As you slash and stab, you feel a rage welling inside you. You're angry, angry as shit. You think of the God-Emperor upon His most Holy Golden Throne. Where is he? You ask yourself as you train again and again, trying the CQC techniques you skimmed over with Urayyin. You'd wish he were by your side, that he'd fight alongside you against these heretics. You slash, stab, slash, cut, the air responds with whistles, soft whistles.

Why are a bunch of citizens fighting like this? You think and wonder. The PDF should be able to hold their own, how unfair is this crap? You continue slashing the air, slashing its nonexistent blows, preparing for a foe you've never seen. You feel like you've never been as concentrated on something as you are now, fighting against nothing, measuring each and everyone of your blows and dodges.

You continue your training, a slight rain appears, but you welcome its wet embrace. You will become tougher for your sake, for the sake of your peers, and for the glory of the God-Emperor. You will fight where he may not, kill what he can not. You breathing becomes heavier, your blows slower. You take a small pause to shelter your revolver in your coat.

You're startled by a few steps behind you, you stop and check the source of it, knife in hand. It's a woman, the Huntress. "What are you doing here?" You ask before resuming your training.

"Trying to enjoy the rain, corporal." she answers while taking a seat on a wet wooden table. "Soft rain like this heals mind and body."

You truck on, the exhaustion settling in, you don't want to stop though, lest a woman see you weak. That's just not something that a good Kirograv rancher could allow to happen. "So you say. Have you come to train as well?" You can no longer hear the cuts of the wind due to the raindrops' noise having eclipsed them.

"No, I saw you in the midst of the night on your own, and thought you'd like company. I know how to handle a knifefight, military parents." You see her taking in some rain, letting her wet, short brown hair fall back on her head, she seems to enjoy it thoroughly. You only feel how cold and wet it is the more you tire.

You stop for a second, trying to keep a semblant of composure in your exhaustion. "Do you now." You respond.

"Want a sparring partner, corporal? Rain is a good posture teacher."

>"No thank you, I'd like to learn by myself."

/*Was revising how combat worked, here we go lads*/

"Alright, show me what you've got. Best of five points, one hit counts as a point, being knocked to the ground counts as a point."

She steps off the crate with great agility, unsheathes her knife, takes a look at you, then assumes a battle ready stance. Her arms are positioned infront of her, her right hand holding the knife decisively, her torso is slightly bent forward. This looks like CQC to you, at least if Urayyin wasn't lying about him using CQC.

You assume your own, shoddy, stance, you feel invigorated by the thought of a sparring partner, fighting together amidst this rain. Learning new techniques to fight the Emperor's enemies.

You circle each other for a few tense seconds. "Corporal, your body should move less. It must have sure footing from which you can engage the enemy, even as large as you are."

"Tch." You feel slightly offended, a woman teaching you how to fight? You will not have it. The Huntress gives a faint smile as she watches you closely, waiting for your move. You gather your thoughts, and think of what you could do. The more you look at her, the less options come to your mind, her stance seems unbroken, while you can't help but fidget and move around, you barely know how to position your body and feel nervous when confronted by her confidence.

>Wait for her. Go into a defensive stance and wait for her attack. (No hit, enemy will have higher failure consequences if they attack and fail).
>How dares she? You will charge and teach her what's right. (More likely to hit, higher failure consequences).
>Move slowly towards her and attack at the right time. (Average likelihood to hit, average failure consequences).
>Feint and attack. (More likely to succeed if you know more than the opponent, opponent can not evade attack.)
>Knock her down and put yourself over her. Use your superior strength. (Less related to actual fighting techniques, brute forces a knock down on your opponent).

Evasion in this system is a reaction, thus if the enemy goes for you, you have a reaction turn to use your dodge skill to, well... dodge. There is no need to declare your intention to dodge beforehand as it is considered instinctive.

Slow and steady, here we go.
>>
>>2412501
You decide to move in slow and steady. There is no reason to rush, the rain wouldn't allow you to do it easily anyhow. You approach, step by step, you can feel your heartbeat increase with every single step taken, the sound of it taking over your mind, you look at her for any movement, she's still, like a statue, observing you.

When you reach a melee distance, you decide to lunge your knife towards her arm in a slash. Roll to hit!

Rolled 53 (1d100)

The hit rings true, paving its way towards her body. A great surprise appears in her stare, she was not expecting such a blow from you. You won't be fumbling against this woman, you got to prove your ability to fight in order to lead.

She steels herself to dodge but can't react to your move fast enough, your knife draws extremely close to her arm as she tries to dodge but you stop before the hit actually connects. You know this would've hurt. She gazes at you with a hint of hate, then respect.

You both move away from each other. "One point for you, corporal." She says while shrugging off some rain from her hair and returning to her original position. You return to your own, and in a split second, you see her running off in a charge towards you, intent on scoring as soon as possible.

Let's see if she hits.
>>
>>2413797
A single hit. Thats the most i can hope for. Heres hoping we can win this encounter despite my believes we'll probsbly lose.

>Knock her down and put yourself over her. Use your superior strength. (Less related to actual fighting techniques, brute forces a knock down on your opponent).
Is there a version of this that's only tripping her, then going for a hit? I figured it'd be a good idea since she's charging straight at us through muddy water she won't have much room to correct herself or stop. With a charge? Unless she does something I think she'll go for a thrust. So if there is not tripping action then this.
>Feint and attack. (More likely to succeed if you know more than the opponent, opponent can not evade attack.)

Charging on slippery wet pavement, even with her poise, is not as easy as it seems. She slips around in a mistep during her charge and has to spend time regaining her composure. You were going to use the opportunity, but see that she regained her usual position with an unnatural speed. You are again at the same distance you started out in, eyeing each other. You can see her mutter something, but you're not too sure what.

>Wait for her. Go into a defensive stance and wait for her attack. (No hit, enemy will have higher failure consequences if they attack and fail).

You decide that you might be able to trick her, the rain and night are no longer allowing you to see too well. You see her closing in slowly, maybe it's a good time as any to trick her. You look to a side as if you had seen something and, just as you expected, instead of looking at the place she bolts towards you. Blade in hand, she's going for a stab, you bolt to a side of hers and slip on the wet pavement, you have to spend a moment regaining your position and ready yourself for the next attack. Your feint didn't seem to give you a clear advantage at all.

Heading off into a stab yourself, you slip yet again, the wet ground overtaking you. You feel exhausted from your training. "Exhaustion isn't an excuse." The Huntress says, as you dodge one of her stabs. You're again to where you began, and you don't feel like ending this at all. You check every single one of her moves. Even if sloppy due to the conditions you're both in, she's got potential, a lot of potential, and you want to tap into that and grow yourself.

Again, you approach each other for more and more clashes. The battle rages on.

5 bouts have gone on, under the now heavy rain and the deep night. She scored in the third, and you on the fourth. Eventually, exhausted and spent, you both look at each other, your breathing now reinforced by your mouth's efforts. You take a last gander at her, and see that she's completely serious about this, it might've started as a dumb joke but now it's a completely serious duel. You actually can't believe that you're winning, she's better than you, better stance, better moveset, yet she's still struggling to keep up with you.

And again, the two of you circle each other. Suddenly she bolts, like a large felinid of the northern Pratorian Wastes, you keep yourself ready, hoping for an opening. Her knife is lunging towards your neck, but you feel ready to deflect the blow and slash her arm for the point score. You're surprised to see that her arm that was once forward, suddenly went down and back up, some sorta knife uppercut. You've never seen that in your life and it takes you completely by surprise, this doesn't mean that you won't attempt your own slash though, and you send it forward towards her arm, full speed. You wind up touching her arm slightly, but her knife reached you before yours did and it's in your neck. One wrong move and she could slice it right then and there. You gulp as you bring down your knife, and she follows suit, bringing her own knife down as well.

"You're good, corporal. Much better than I imagined, you've even started imitating my moves mid-fight. I am impressed." The huntress seems sincere, she takes her knife to its holster and puts her thumbs in them, still trying to steady her breath.

Gained Temporary Weapon Training: Low-Tech Melee Training. (Removes Untrained (-20) malus when fighting with low-tech melee weapons.)
Gained Temporary Talent: Knife CQC Basics (+10 to all rolls related to knife fighting.)

You do the same, you're both drenched, she goes off back to the crate she was sitting on earlier, swinging her legs gently and taking in the rain again. "I didn't expect you to hold your own like that. I will grant you this fight if you wish."

"Let's just say the neck counts for two points, tie." You say, giving off a sly smile as you recover from the battle. "Let's leave, don't want us to get sick now. Plus, these clothes are gonna take hours to dry off." You tuck yourself into your cloak. You notice that she's not wearing.

She nods. "Thank you, corporal. I owe you a training, then." She drops off from the crate, and slightly tilts her head, pointing towards the exit.

You invite her to move out first with a wave of the hand. As you come out, you walk together towards the tent, not quite running, you're too tired, just enjoying the promenade to your bunk beds, it's not like you could get any more wet than you already are. You don't really speak much until you reach the tent, the rain is too intense, it is a bit of an awkward situation but it's not like the tents are too far away.

You see Rogard Druns snoring loudly and Terry Fortran tinkering with his weapon and preparing a first aid kit. He looks at you for a second and goes back to his work. "Went off for a walk then?" he asks.

The Huntress shrugs and starts changing clothes, Terry looks at you. "Not the best night to go for a romantic date, corporal. Hell, I'd say it's not exactly the best moment in life, considering how much our lives are risk right now."

You look at Fortran, he's the older of the fire team and obviously likes his tech and medicae more than fighting. As far as you know, he used to be a nurse in an Ecclesiarchy clinic south of the city.

"It was no date, we were training. Something which I believe you need more of." you tell Fortran. "War is not a place to tinker with tech, you must pull your weight."

You hear a "Pft." coming from Fortran's mouth. "Got to know enough about war in the uprising of the Pratoria. Didn't they teach you why it's the Pratorian Wastes now?"

You're surprised by what he's saying, Pratoria? Your pas never taught you about it, nor did you ever really hear the name apart from ancient history.

He sees the surprise in your face, he stops tinkering with his tools and sits down normally on his bunk bed, facing you. "Pratoria used to be a martial nation at the top end of the world's ass. Cold and unforgiving place, made powerful warriors, but eventually it also made powerful Chaos cults, some thirty years ago."

You gulp, Chaos. That's not a word you hear often, your parents nearly never brought it up, and your cop buddies only ever told you to inform the Ecclesiarchy as soon as you found any evidence of it, signs, trinkets, you were shown the most basic artifacts they have. You notice Fortran trying to keep his voice low.

"The governor of the planet didn't like it, probably pressure from the Ecclesiarchy if you ask me. He sent out a whole bunch of PDF bolstered by militia. When he noticed that things weren't going well..." he signals a cut in the neck with his thumb. "He blew the fuck out of it from orbit, I thank the God-Emperor I was on the back end of the frontlines fixing up some wounded. Most of our men at the front itself got wiped, survivors were sent home with a good pension."

He throws himself back on the bed, leaving his stuff on the ground. "I wasn't a survivor to 'em though. Just a cowardly medic fixing up dead men in the backlines because he was too scared to go to the front. So here I am again, just because I chose to live in the Ruckor peninsula." He thinks for a bit of time. "And probably because I'm the only person in a few kilometers that knows how to treat war wounds right." He now looks at you again, serious as could be.

"Listen kid. Just go back to the Kirograv ranches if you come outta this one alive." he tells you, leaving a small silence before continuing. "War ain't pretty, and in this war we're more than nobodies. Expendable resources. Being an expendable resource in war is the worst place you can find yourself in."

You're shocked by everything he told you, as far as you know, the Pratorian wastes are nothing more than empty wastelands with ruins from ancient civilizations, and this guy talks about how the ruins are thirty at most. You notice the huntress, now comfortably dressed in new fatigues, is also listening intently, with a strange glow in her eyes. She doesn't seem angry or anything, you feel like she's extremely interested in the story though. Rogard is still tucked away in his sheets, snoring loudly.

"I'm sorry for what happened to you, but we must make sure to work as a team in order to come out of this one alive." you tell the man. You wonder how old he actually is, considering this Pratorian rebellion was thirty years ago. You'd wager he's around 45 to 55 years old.

Fortran smiles. "You may be right, boy, but my old bones can't learn much more than what they already know. Much less in the amount of time we got before reaching the front. Don't worry though, I'll do my best to take shots on our enemies with the autogun I got provided. And I'll carry the rest of my weight tending our squad's wounded. Have a blessed night."

With that, he turns around on his bed, facing the tent's wall. The only two awake right now is you and the Huntress, you head off to your bunk bed and sit down, making sure that your wet clothes are properly hanged. Don't want any surprises tomorrow. You give a look towards the Huntress, and she seems to be deep in thought, sitting on her bed with her hands folded in front of her mouth, supporting her head.

You don't think much of it, you're not surprised that someone who never went to war is spooked at the idea of heading out to a front. It's not like you've been to war yourself, but you faced one or two life or death situations in the city, most of them resolved with a good revolver shot.

You sit down yourself, reciting the litany of faith in your head, your parents made you do it every night, and eventually you did it automatically, but today was different. You felt every single word of it, and hoped that the God-Emperor would listen to your prayers in these trying times.

As you're finishing, you hear the Huntress raise her voice in soft whisper. "My name is Mira, Mira Hawthorne." she says.

You smile a comforting smile. "Hey miss Hawthorne, glad to meet you. I'm Bolter, Bolter Gareth Armstrong." You tell her as you get your lower body under your thin, low-quality sheets.

She raises her voice again, "Call me Mira, I'm not an old hag yet." she remains in a meditative silence for a few seconds. "Thank you for sparring with me earlier. It was a good feeling."

You nod. "Sparring is a good way to let go of acumulated stress and to learn new techniques."

She gives out a confused look. "That's not what I-", she stops herself mid sentence. "Excuse me corporal, you're absolutely right." she says, then gets under her sheets herself.

You smile, girl's probably confused with all that's been happening. Totally normal, you think, but you're pretty sure she'll manage mid-fight. You remember her hollow and murderous stare as she sparred with you. If that's how she treats a fellow sparring partner, then she'll be ruthless against the Imperium's foes. You're glad she's in your fire team.

The night passes uneventfully, the next day is mostly spent breaking up camp, storing everything in the trucks, and getting ready to set out at the next day. Urayyin stops you around mid-afternoon and takes you to a more private area.

"You teach your men well, Armstrong." he says in his gruff voice. You feel pride in you. The PDF sergeant smiles to you. "This will be a whole other ordeal, though. Be prepared, come what may." he tells you.

"I will be, sir." you respond, giving an Imperial salute, hand reaching your forehead.

"Our first mission at the front will be to establish ourselves, and in the afternoon fortify a key building for the maintenance of the electric supply of a part of the city. The front's being pushed back and we expect them to reach it by the evening."

You nod. "What will be our squad's task, sergeant?"

"We will be entrenched in the cover below the building along with second squad, as a first line of defense. Don't fret, it is a good position. We were assigned there due to our proficiency in surviving melee. Second squad got a proficiency in athletics, so they will be able to relay messages with ease with other platoons if need be." Urayyin pauses, checking if you actually got all that. You nod, writing everything down in a small handbook that was given to you as part of your kit.

"And third squad?" You ask.

Takhed continues. "Within the building, third squad will use stealth to remain hidden and make it seem like only two squads were assigned to protecting the building. On our call, we will be able to use the element of surprise and let them rain fire on our enemies. We should only use this in a key moment of the battle."

"Who will we fight?"

"We're not completely sure, but we can expect a platoon or two of tribesmen. If there is only one platoon, you best check for cavalry running around. They might want to pick off the first positions with them and then allow the infantry to sweep in during the confusion."

You nod once again, everything is planned, it seems that the higher ups for your platoon actually have their underlings' wellbeing in mind. You remember Pratoria, and think that this will not always be the case.

"You know our task, you know our orders. Be strong and vigilant, Armstrong."

Your relationship with Takhed Urayyin has risen from Average to Good.

With Urayyin's briefing done. You inform your fire team of your task, they all seem fine with what they're told, even glad that defence is our first mission.

You have a bit of time to spare inbetween preparations. What will you do?
>Try to bolster the morale of your squad. It should be hard considering morale is already great. Not succeeding would be a waste of your time.
>Try to get some unarmed CQC training in with Mira. You fear that overexerting yourself like this could lead you to be fatigued, and it'll be hard to recover before the fight.

As Rogard helps you lift a large crate filled with tents, you decide to strike up some conversation. "So, Rogard, do you feel ready for what's coming?"

"Ready as can be, corporal. I'm used to fighting anyhow." He says, seemingly carrying the crate without much effort.

"Are you now?"

"Yup, been in the slums my whole life. Had to do a lotta stuff to get by, a lotta stuff to live another day." He says, you notice his expression seems sad, his eyes frowning.

"Why didn't you join the PDF then? Or the Law Enforcement? Plenty of work for strong capable hands like yours."

He laughs. "PDF and LE have no use for slum boys with no reputation, corporal. It's not all about being big and strong, you need someone to recommend you." He looks at you. "Heard you were a cop, who recommended you anyhow?"

"I got spotted by some officer while working in the docks, loading and unloading goods. When I told him I'm from Kirograv he took me aboard. Got some training and got sent out."

Rogard nods. "I see, they usually spot around the docks."

You think for a bit, and realize you actually had to do explain a lotta stuff from your background, and even ways to contact your parents to prove if what you were saying was right. You don't know if they actually did. Might explain why Rogard didn't simply go work at the docks.

"Rogard, if you need something, you can go ahead and tell me." you tell the man.

"I think I'll only need you to kill the man behind me while I kill the man in front of me, corporal." He says. You think he's not in a terribly good mood. You finish loading the crate.

"Got a sweet heart back home, Rogard?" you ask while cleaning the wood dust off your hands.

"Nope, I'd rather not meddle with women from my area. You know how it is."

You can imagine, the slums aren't exactly the healthiest part of town, plus, the folks there usually get by with crime and prostitution, all problems, you think. "Even so, no one struck your fancy over there?"

He shakes his head. "None of 'em, no. Even the girls my age have already lost all innocence, it's pretty fucked up."

You both head off towards the nearest large crate. Picking it up and hauling it towards the truck. Rogard is rather silent, except for a few grunts when picking up the heavy crate. You think of another question,

"Got any plans for the future?"

"Only one viable, joining the cops or the PDF. Militia work might give me a chance, just have to distinguish myself somewhat on the battlefield." You both heave the crate onto the truck. Rogard takes his hands to his waist, recovering his breath. "You, corporal?"

"I might just hit it up with the Imperial Guard. I want to start giving my life some purpose, get out of this world and make a name for myself in the service of the God-Emperor."

Rogard looks at you, confused. "No offense corporal, but most folks who enter the Imperial Guard never return." He says in a whisper.

You nod. "Maybe, but at least they lived their life to the fullest. Fighting for the Throne. That's what I want for myself."

"Right." Rogard says. "It's still risky business, war."

"It's also a business that will net you a position on the top if you're hardy enough. Remanor is full of pedantic families enjoying the higher positions as if it were a dynastic right. How will we ever become anything else than low-class city dwellers if we stay in Remanor?"

"You've got ambition, Bolter, I'll give you that."

Sergeant Urayyin approaches the two of you, you notice someone else besides him, seems like he is the officer who arrived yesterday by truck. The Platoon lieutenant, young and with bright blue eyes and blonde hair. He bears a sword in his belt and a pistol type you've never seen before. You wager it's a laspistol, considering the magazine looks more like a battery.

"This is Bolter Armstrong, Lieutenant Ratscher." Sergeant Urayyin says. The lieutenant has his hands to his back and eyes you up intently.

He speaks a few words of High Gothic, his youth showing through his somewhat high pitched voice. "Good pick, he seems towering and vigorous."

You extend your hand to lieutenant Ratscher. "Well met, sir. My name is Bolter Gareth Armstrong, I was graciously appointed corporal by the PDF."

He looks at you, wide-eyed, as does Sergeant Urayyin. Takhed was about to start making excuses for you when he saw Ratscher accepting your hand with a firm grip. Ratscher speaks again, still in High Gothic.

"It is good to see some courageous blood within a militia. Most of the men I've met have saluted me, not saying a word, fearful. You have initiative, a commendable feat for a corporal to have."

Takhed looks at you, surprised, and Rogard Druns looks at everyone, not knowing what's going on, but he doesn't seem worried since the lieutenant isn't angry. You decide to get some good rep with this lieutenant at least.

"Thank you, sir. Such high praises from you will give me renewed will in my battle against the foes of the Imperium."

Ratscher nods, "I hope it will be so.", he smiles after saying that. "If you want a spot in the PDF, talk to me after this campaign, I will help you find something. Urayyin, I no longer need you to accompany me for now, you can stay with your squad and prepare them further if need be."

Urayyin salutes Ratscher, "Sir, yes sir!", not letting go of his pose until Ratscher waves you all goodbye and takes off in a frisky walk towards the three companions that had come here with him.

Urayyin then glares at you, "You've got balls, Armstrong, but you better show them off when it isn't my head that's at risk."

You're surprised at his comment. "He didn't seem so bad." you answer, wondering what's got Urayyin so troubled.

"Be glad you got on his good side, young man." he says, checking around him for anybody listening. "The Ratscher family is ruthless. This one is Torclein Ratscher, third son of the patriarch of the Ratschers, Maximiliard Ratscher. He's got things to prove if he wants to ascend the ranks, and we're the pawns for that ascension."

You look at Ratscher again, you see him in high spirits, talking with his entourage. "I wouldn't have thought. He seems like he's got good will."

"Actions speak louder than words, Armstrong." he says. "Now return to work, we have to make sure everything is prepared in three hours tops."

"Understood, sergeant. Forgive me for my transgression."

"Forgiven, next time do it when you're the sergeant they might behead."

"Will do."

Urayyin walks away, you see him heading towards another squad leader, apparently intent on gathering them. You shrug it off and return to work, Rogard Druns accompanying you.

"Making friends in high places, Bolter?" he asks.

"I'd say I got lucky, nothing more." you tell him.

He laughs and nods. "If you say so, I could barely understand a word the lieutenant spoke. He seemed cheery after the whole ordeal though, so you did something right."

Work goes on uneventfully for the next two hours, your platoon finishes an hour early, and you mount the trucks to head off to the front. Your squad's truck fills with prayers, litanies, last minute reads of the infantryman's primer. Some pray to the machine spirits of their weapons, others to the God-Emperor himself. Either way, it is obvious that fear is starting to take a hold of their hearts. You,

>Pray to the God-Emperor.
>Pray to the machine spirits of your weapons.

You decide to give prayer to the God-Emperor, somewhere deep in you, you feel a warmth, as if a light had touched you. You're filled to the brim with confidence, even in the face of incoming doom, your heart burns with impatience to mow down the emperor's enemies.

Your zealousness earns you a fate point. Whenever an important roll goes bad, you can burn a fate point to cause a reroll.

As the travel continues, you and Urayyin begin to make plans, trying to take in as much info as possible from the relatively new maps that you were given. Although Urayyin is making sense of the situation, you can hardly come to grasp anything about what he tells you. There's a lot of talks about coordinates, gathering points, possible areas of breakthrough... Yet you simply can't grasp much about it at all.

Urayyin waves you off. "Don't worry, Armstrong. You were not trained for this, allow me to take care of it and I'll teach you how it works when we're given enough time."

You nod, somewhat sad. The fire still burns in you, but you feel somewhat helpless, being unable to help in such an important matter.

The truck comes to a halt, as far as you know this ride was around two hours long. A lot of time when you're squeezed in with 10 people.

The squad leaves the truck in an orderly fashion, you check your surroundings, and see a rather large encampment still in construction. It seems like a company encampment, lots of men and women are already settling in and putting up tents of various sizes.

Urayyin stands in front of your entire squad. "I will show you the area assigned to us. Set up in that spot, nowhere else." he says.

You all salute in unison. "Yes sir!"

With that, a little trek through the camp allows you to see how it is spread around, each platoon is building up its own district, with a central area for the canteen and commander tents. You counted three platoons, more or less, considering the amount of well-dressed officers in front of the command tent, you see Ratscher with them, merry as a man can be.

Urayyin stops, "Between this tent and the one over there, yours to settle in."

Camp is set up rather quickly and the night passes uneventfully. The next day comes by, and you notice various platoons' districts are empty, their members sent out to the front probably.

During lunch, you see that everyone is rather quiet, the entire platoon keeping to themselves. Now that the battle was mere hours away, the militia begins to worry about their lives.

The squad's morale has lowered to Good.
The rest of the squads' morale has lowered to Average.

The sergeants are together at a table, discussing some matter or another.

You,
>Try to give a rousing speech to the men. Morale must rise again.
>Go check on the sergeants, see what they're talking about.
>See if you can strengthen the bonds of your fire team. They're the only ones you have a duty to keep alive.

The decision taken was to strengthen the bonds of your fire team, not to give a speech.

Taking a while to write up, will be ready in a bit.

You start talking with your fireteam, see what their relationship to each other is. Mira seems to enjoy training with Rogard, and they both respect Fortran for his knowledge on technical and medical matters, Fortran's opinion of the other two is rather neutral.

You decide to gather them up, the objective being to explain each member's strength, their weaknesses, and how to use or at least retract those in a fight.

Mira can Hawthorne, nicknamed the Huntress, can hold her own in a melee, but is more useful in range. Since Fortran is rather useless at fighting but efficient with other aspects related to battle support, he will stay behind, protected by her. Both you and Rogard are rather large men, more of a penchant for fighting than long range, Rogard is to take the front while you support him with gunfire and then melee if necessary.

After explaining most situations that could come to occur, you notice that your fire team is talking to each other, Mira is deeply interested in Fortran's knowledge of tech, while Rogard is curious about Mira's CQC knowledge. Overall, you feel like your fire team can now do much better in a fight than it would've had you not done this brainstorming.

Your fire team knows its strength and weaknesses. Decisions taken in battle will be more efficient and coordinated.

You seem to have inspired the rest of the squads as well, and they are now doing their own work to realize each others' strength and weaknesses and how exactly they can use them to their advantage in battle.

Platoon's overall combat efficiency increased.

Noticing the sudden talkativeness of the platoon. The sergeants approach your fire team, the apparent source of it all. Urayyin takes the lead in front of the two others. They call to you and lead you apart from the rest.

"What is the meaning of this, Armstrong?" He asks, he doesn't seem angry, but he does seem wary.

"We're discussing how to properly survive a battle, sergeant Urayyin." you tell him, serious and confident.

Another sergeant, a tall, strong man, intervenes. You notice a large Imperial Skull on his chest. "The times before battle are not meant for idle senseless chatter, but for thoughtful prayer, militiaman."

You see that the third sergeant, an old thin woman with a dangerous looking knife, half her hair greyed already, chuckles. "Come now, Otilio, this is their first battle."

She takes lead in front of the other two, who seem reluctant to interrupt her. "Young man, your intentions here are good, but you must make sure that you deal with the consequences."

"I believe the consequences of these talks and debates will be positive, sergeant..."

"Bantree, they call me the Quiet. I lead the stealth squad." she says, a faint smile on her grizzled face. "Listen boy, comrades who appreciate each other too much at the low organizational and training level that you are in will commit many mistakes to ensure the wellbeing of their comrades. Even if in detriment of the objective."

You're taken back by what she's saying. You reply, "Bonds of camaraderie can only do good for us, miss. It will drive us to fight harder and better."

You see that she does not relent in her smile, but stays silent. The mood gets really eerie as this woman looks at you in the eyes. "I've said my part." she says, as she walks away, Otilio in her tow.

Urayyin sighs. "You've got ways to get yourself noticed, Armstrong. They will speak with lieutenant Ratscher of this."

"You think he'll take it well?"

"Hopefully." he replies. "Anyhow, we're leaving soon to the front, tell your fire team to gear up, I'll gather the rest of the squad."

The platoon proceeds to prepare, marching off into the electric substation you are supposed to hold. When you arrive, you notice that the place is very well fortified, and that most of the trees around it have been cut down, at least in a 30 meter radius, forbidding the attackers cover.

There are sandbags and foxholes all around the substation, prepared by sappers who you saw as they headed back to their own camp. The lieutenant and one of his entourage, who has the look of a bodyguard head inside. The heavy stubber gun team, another element of the lieutenant's entourage, has established itself in front of the substation, ready to fire.

Your squad has been assigned the ripper gun's team left, and the runner squad has their right. You are now in the trenches, holding up your guns and awaiting the enemy.

It's in the late afternoon when a messenger comes from the stealth squad in the building, they say they saw movement coming from up north, the way the ripper gun is facing.

Urayyin takes a look through his magnoculars. You hadn't seen them up until now, and he seems like an expert using them. "Shit." he says.

He hunkers down in the foxhole. "Get ready, men." he says in a low voice, the entire squad nods.

You all take out your heads and your autoguns from the trench, and see distant figures eyeing up the area. You count at least two platoons' worth of infantry. Seeing two heavy weapons on both sides, stubbers. They're too far away to be shot propely with your weapons, Urayyin orders you to wait for them to enter the kill zone.

The battle is about to start, is there something you'd like to do before it begins?
>Write in.
>Nothing, let the battle begin.
Last update for tonight, it's really late.
>>
>>2429353
Is it to late to hide our ripper gun before they observe our positions?
>>
>>2429398
Looking at the ripper gun you see it has no intention of moving. You can try to convince Urayyin to send a messenger to Ratscher so that he orders a movement, otherwise you'll have to trust Ratscher's rolls.
>>
>>2429353
>Write in.

Ask Urayyin what he would order his men to do if he saw our positions and needed to attack. How would we counter that?

You beckon Urayyin to approach you, and he does. "Something you need, corporal?" he asks.

"Sarge, I know this might seem offensive, but you come from the Adrecharan deserts, how do you think our foes will attack and how can we counter it?"

"I've not been in the deserts in ten years, all I can tell you is that they won't risk too many casualties, so they won't simply rush into a heavy stubber's kill zone for the sake of honor. They'll probably split up to attack through as many sides as possible if those are the forces that they got, using the stubbers to lay down suppressive fire and try and pin as many of us as possible while they charge."

Knowing this, what do you wish to do? Remember that you only have power over your fire team, you'd have to convince either Urayyin or Lieutenant Ratscher if you wanted to use any more men from the platoon.
>>
>"The times before battle are not meant for idle senseless chatter, but for thoughtful prayer, militiaman."
I found this kind of funny. The Emperor would have approved of our discussion.

>>2430489
>heavy stubber gun team, another element of the lieutenant's entourage, has established itself in front of the substation.

I'm not sure if we should really move our team or not. The Sargent's probably leave already know what they're doing with where they're placing their squads. Does Urayyin think we're set or should we move?
>>
>>2430514
You speak to Urayyin once again, and he does say that he trusts Ratscher well enough for him to move his forces according to the situation. But his priority will be defence of the area, he's not thinking of moving his forces out of the trenches at any point unless the enemy routs. Urayyin feels that this is too static a formation, considering that some of our men have shotguns and that the enemy has the upper hand in numbers and manoeuvrability

The stealthed squad in the building is observing most of the battlefield and the runner squad has at least one man ready to maintain communication between the main building and the trenches. So Ratscher's orders should reach their intended targets easily.
>>
>>2430489
Do we have full control of the left flank, or is that Urayyin, and we control half that flank?
>>
>>2430520
If only we had more people and time. Welp I'm ready.
>>
>>2430520
I think we should see if we can bait the enemy into charging us in the open with sniper fire. Then when they get close we all open up on them when they rush past the 30m tree line.
>>
>>2430537
Do you think they have snipers of their own?
>>
>>2430561
Possible, at least perhaps some decent shooters is likely on their side. Ideally, our sniper girl will shoot an office or nco, then move down to threats to her or our platoon, or work on counter sniping until she is the only sniper left.
>>
>>2430568
I don't remember the details, but arentvthe people we're fighting supposed to be badasses?
>>
>>2430582
They are suppose to be the same desert people as Urayyin.

>>2430586
This is is correct. The desert peoples are strong and hardy, but not accustomed to warfare outside of their homeland.

>>2430561
Urayyin has noticed no snipers on their side, but they could be using stealth.

>>2430537
Sadly, our forces do not have sniper rifles.

>>2430522
I decided to make a drawing of the current situation. Let's say that Urayyin scrambled it in a hurry.
>>
>>2430634
At the very least, did anyone have a scope to their autoguns?
>>
>>2430636
You know that Ratscher's bodyguard had a scope on his autogun, but no one else. It would be up to Ratscher's abilities as a commander to see if he uses it or not. Anyhow, the autoguns have an established range and even with a scope it would be quite hard to reach these enemies.
>>
Battle will begin in around 2 hours.
>>
>>2430707
The quiet before the storm...
>>
2 hours turned into 4. Here we go anyway. I'll start writing
>>
>>2430634
Didn't that female huntress get a rifle of some sorts, or the lever guns we saw at the start?

>>2430634
Is the substation a enclosed building with a roof?
Is it possible to move the heavy stubber onto the roof of the substation, then sandbag it up?

Also, why no one watching the rear or flanks?
>>
>>2431398
The huntress was given an autogun.

>>2431398
The substation is enclosed and has a roof, yes. Urayyin tells you that it wasn't move to the roof for fear of snipers.

The enemy is supposed to come from the front, so you are all situated in front of the substation in case of a frontal attack. If the enemy comes from anywhere else, the squads would split up to take care of the various unprotected areas. The non-garrisoned areas are being watched by the stealth squad inside the building.
>>
>>2431416
Well lets have at it.
>>
Urayyin continues observing the enemy, and sees that the platoons are splitting up, each heading towards a direction, one left and one right. Urayyin takes off his magnos and scratches his eyes. "I'm going to tell Ratscher that we'll need reinforcements. You, Rambton, bolt to the building and head to the third floor, tell Ratscher we'll need platoon Alpha or Beta if we are to protect this building efficiently."

Urayyin picks up his magnos again and sees the enemy, coming closer and closer to autogun long range and eventually reaching it. "Two squads, each platoon has two squads." he says. "They kept the traditions, twelve men instead of ten per squad. So that's twenty four per platoon plus the heavy stubber team."

The militiaman nods and heads inside in a run. You look at Urayyin, he seems worried. "Our squad will head towards the building's left flank. The heavy stubber has the front covered in case the enemy decides to head back and attack through there. I doubt they would be that foolish."

You obey Urayyin, approaching the left side and keeping your head below the trenches. You peek out of the trenches and see the enemy platoon advancing, rapidly. It's happening, you think, it's really fucking happening.

"Get your weapons out and use the sandbags infront of the trenches as support, prepare to fire, on my mark!"

You take out your autogun and aim down your sights, the enemy is coming closer and closer, not quite in the 30 meter range of the autoguns but close.

And after a bit, they stop and their silhouettes lower, they seem to be on their knees. "Shit." Urayyin says. "THE THREE IN THE CENTER, SHOOT THEM!"

The entire squad aims towards the center, three figures are preparing a large device, the heavy stubber, most likely. The militia begins their assault, firing a first volley of bullets. The enemy responds in kind, the first shots have been fired.

You,

>Fire two standard shots into the enemy's heavy stubber team.
>Fire two standard shots and try to pick off other enemies that aren't covered by heavy weapons.

You order your fire team to,
>Fire at the stubber team.
>Fire at exposed enemy infantry.

The shots start ringing all around, yours hit true, you see a friendly bullet hitting what seemed like the leader of the enemy's heavy stubber team, you can hear Mira screaming "I got one!", next comes your bullet, which hits the very same man in the torso, you see him slump down on the ground.

You fire again and score a hit on another one of the specialists, but he seems to truck on with his duties.

The rest of your squad was not so lucky, was it stress? Maybe they are careless due to their good position? Maybe lady luck simply isn't on their side, you don't see any other hit connecting.

The enemy though, boy, what a hail of bloody fire. They all started firing rather aimlessly, but around four of them are strict in their demeanour and succesfully aim and hit you. You think you've identified their lieutenant and his posse.

An instant after, you see Mira slumping on the ground besides you. "Shit!" You scream. "Mira? Mira, get up!"

She gets up, a bulled firmly lodged on her arm. In your squad, you see the old woman also got hit, but is still fighting, and some other militiaman was hit as well.

"I'm fine." Mira says. Fortran takes a quick gander at her wound, "No you're not, another one like that and down you go. Corporal, let me patch up her wound, I'll be quick, I promise."

In the second firing volley, the enemy begins to charge up towards your position, still firing their weapons. Most of them moving in front of the heavy stubber team in order to shield them from your fire. They aren't quick enough though, and you see Rogard firing a well aimed shot towards the last specialist. It must've hit something precious, as the man is thrown back a meter or two and his body is not moving at all, unlike the previous specialist who is still jerking around on the ground.

The men moving in to shield the specialists are also getting hit by the rest of your squad, you see at least four other shots ring true, one by Urayyin rips through an enemy soldier, slowing him down. The rest of the shots graze various enemies but don't seem to do much damage.

The enemy thunder on, continuing their valiant charge against you. At this rate, you think you'll be able to pull off three more volleys before the platoon reaches you.

You check on Fortran and Hawthorne. "Sorry sir." Fortran says, "This bullet's lodged in deep, I need more time."

A quick glance on the front, you see that your platoon's heavy stubber team is finishing up demounting their weapon, you don't know where they're headed.

Your decisions taken here will be repeated for the next three volleys, choose wisely. After the three volleys, the enemy will be right on you.

>tell him to continue healing Mira until she's back on her feet or the enemy is too close for comfort.
>tell them to get back into the fray.

You,
>Attack the brunt of the enemy force.
>Attack their supposed leaders. They are being shielded by the rest of the force, so it would be a harder roll.

You tell Rogard to,
>Attack the brunt of th enemy force

You can ask the following of Urayyin (Command roll OR good write in to convince him)
>Concentrate fire on enemy leadership.

>Request the hidden militia inside the building to unveil themselves and start firing at the enemy

The enemy is demoralized by the loss or wounding of their command and heavy stubber, they'll have to pass a willpower check if they want to finally engage you in melee.
>>
As the enemy charge on, they continue firing towards you, you see one of them ripping through one of your squadmate's head, but not quite, as the man somehow gets up and keeps on fighting. Must've been a graze.

Mira got up after a bit along with Fortran. "That should last her for this battle and a bit more." he says. As if his words brought down bad luck, you see him get hit in the flak vest he's wearing. "Shit!" he yells, trying to see if the wound was bad. This wasn't the last of your surprises, as soon after you see Mira Hawthorne thrown in the ground again, grasping at her arm before getting back up and continuing her firing. Fortran looks at her one more time. "You're lucky I patched you up, this would've sent you reeling otherwise."

Mira nods and continues her bloody work, firing at the enemy's leadership along with the rest of the squad. You see that during the three volleys of fire, one of the enemy leaders falls over dead, another one grasping at his leg, and another one was hit in the arm and continues his charge along with the rest of his men.

You, on the other hand, decided to fire at the grunts, trying to demoralize them and avoiding overkill while firing at the enemy leaders. You strike two in at least four shots, three of the men that you fired up on fall down mid-charge and can no longer run, instead supporting from afar.

During the battle, you see that the heavy stubber is coming towards your position, setting down close to Urayyin and informing him of something. Urayyin then approaches you, "Ratscher sends his regards. He seems to have taken a liking to you." He says before firing more shots into the incoming soldiers. The heavy stubber is ready to fire by the time the enemy is about to reach the frontlines, when your foes see this, you see them starting to run away or throw their hands in the air, they're broken.

Six of them continue their run, one of them including a swordsman, the one guy you think is the boss of this platoon, they enter the trenches you are in. The swordsman sees Urayyin and charges yelling curses in a foreign tongue at him, Urayyin unsheathes his own curved sword and prepares himself to meet him, "That's their lieutenant! For the Emperor!" He says before his sword meets the enemy's. The other five try their hardest to reach the heavy stubber team but are kept busy by the rest of your squad, including Rogard.

The wounded of your squad, Mira and the older lady, take a step back and try to look for any openings to fire.

You,
>Help Urayyin in his fight against the enemy lieutenant.
>Get in the brawl against the other six foes and eradicate them.
>Go into the building and try to request aid from the stealth squad.

>Honestly, all I see are numbers and I’m just crossing my fingers hoping for the best. Then again, I should actually read up on Only War before I can comment, but I love the quest so far!
Thank you, yeah these numbers probably make no sense. All you could really make out is how well one side or another shoots according to the aiming rolls (Those rolls with 25d100 or 10d100 were shots from each side).

The more I think about it, the less sense it makes to show these numbers unless the anons reading actually know how Only War works. Which is why I'll keep them hidden from now on, or at least find another way to show their results.

You know Urayyin to be capable of holding his own, moreso in a close combat situation like this one. Your other squadmates though, are not so able. You know Rogard and Mira are capable enough, though Mira is still out of the fight. You observe the situation in the trenches and see Rogard circling a tribesman with his knife, the militia are doing the same, there is one tribesman for every member of the squad not wounded. A seven versus seven.

One of the unengaged tribesmen has eyed you up, you feel the pressure of battle settling in you, a rush of adrenaline flows through you, and you're ready to shank that motherfucker like you haven't shanked anyone before. You lock into his blue-eyed stare, the only thing you can see under his ceremonial battle turban. He has his knife ready, he's assuming a basic melee stance. You assume your own CQC stance, hopefully Mira's watching from the backline and will tell you about your mistakes later on.

That is, if you survive. The enemy is not yet in melee range, you would have to move to his position to begin using most melee attacks.

In each turn of combat you can use one full action or two half actions. Dodging blows counts as a reaction, of which you have one for free per turn (So if the enemy attacks you, you will automatically dodge his move). Certain other actions are free.

You will use one of the following set of actions.

>Charge him with your knife(Full Action). Covers current distance between him and you, increases aim DC by 20 (Makes it easier, DC to roll under would be 55).
>Use your Quick Draw talent to pull out your revolver (Free Action) and shoot him twice (2 Half-Actions, standard attacks, +10 DC to hit). If the enemy survives and reaches you, you will enter into a melee and will only be able to attack or switch back to knife if you Disengage in the next turn (Half-Action, no roll).

This idiot is bringing a knife to a gunfight. You pull out your revolver, remembering a few bad nights when raiding junkie homes back in the slums. You're damn fast, and the tribesman goes wide-eyed when he sees it. You fire once, and he jumps away right before you do so, but you got enough time to fire again while he charges towards you, hitting him dead in the arm. He's still trucking though, and you brace for impact.

You can feel that this guy just put his all into this knife attack, it went through your cloak just barely and you feel a nasty scratch in your chest. This would've been much worse if not for the flak cloak.

He yanks the knife out of it and prepares himself to continue. With a quick look around you, you see that Rogard made quick work of his enemy.

>Disengage, switch to your knife, and move into melee. Your enemy won't be able to charge you again but you won't hit him at all this round.
>Disengage and shoot him. Your enemy will be able to charge once more but you'll hit him.

You can also,
>Tell Mira to shoot the man when you disengage, this means she won't assist others who might need it.

You quickly jump out of the fight, holstering your gun then picking up your knife. Your target tries slashing the air where you were, but isn't quite fast enough, his wounds grievous enough that he can't quite move as well as he did before. You approach him again, and he uses the time to slash you two more times, one hits you in the arm and the other in the torso, thankfully, the flak holds out against these attacks and you quickly respond.

With a dexterous move, you first slash into his torso, his flak vest holds back most of your blow yet you succesfully puncture into it. As you pull out your knife, the tribesman sees an opportunity, his eyes filled with suicidal rage, he begins a swing towards you.

Not good enough.

You deftly dodge the slow blow and use the opening he left to slice open his throat, blood gushes out his cut artery and the tribesman uses what remains of his strength to try and block the bleeding with his hand. It's useless, he falls over on the ground, attempting to breathe through his open neck, not even two seconds pass before he dies of the shock and blood loss.

You don't feel quite right about this, but there's no time for doubt. You look left and right, and see that your squad has more or less been able to either kill or force surrender on the now outnumbered enemy. You hear the heavy stubber gun as well, ripping through the fleeing foes.

Oh shit! Urayyin. You look towards Urayyin, the enemy lieutenant is in bad shape. But surprise strikes, as the lieutenant suddenly moves with the speed of a high Gothic car, his first blow is parried by Urayyin with a swift move of his sword, but it wasn't enough. The lieutenant proceeds to twist his sword in an odd manner and slash Urayyin's left arm, leaving a nasty gush of blood spewing out as Urayyin falls to the ground.

Urayyin twists his body and jumps back up, the surprised lieutenant can only try to bring up his sword to protect himself, but Urayyin mercilessly slashes his head and destroys the enemy lieutenant's face. His body falls to the ground, dead from the shock.

It's over. The battle has ended. You look around you and see that you, Rogard, and one of the militia directly under Urayyin came out unscathed. Everyone else either has a cut somewhere or a bullet hole, Fortran is doing his best to stop most of the bleeding from the squad, even with a bullet in him.

Urayyin approaches you, sheathing his sword. "We've done it." he says. "It seems the Huntress is in bad shape, along with Alekt and Teerin. You see him point towards this Alekt man, more like a boy, it's actually the small lad that asked you if you were gonna survive this one. Apparently he's lucky, because it's the very same man that you saw recieving a shot to the head, only for it to be a graze. Teerin is the old woman that got shot earlier, she seems rather pale, but she was bandaged by Fortran and seems stable.
>>
>>2437658
Forgot my trip.

>>2437658
Urayyin puts a hand on your shoulder. "Recieve medical attention and bind the prisoners, I will go see how squad two and three are faring.". You see him making a tourniquet on his arm, staunching the bleeding of his wound.

Shit, the prisoners. How many are they? you think. You see five tribesmen, three wounded, you remember them participating in the melee, another two surrendered as they were wounded during the charge and didn't want to face a heavy stubber on a medium distance firefight.

You head up to Rogard, who's already tying them up as Mira, sitting down on the ground, and two bandaged militia point their guns towards them. "You got this under control, Rogard?"

"Yeah, these bastards won't get out of the knots easily."

You look at the tribesmen, they look down, defeated, not speaking a word. You don't know if they speak Low Gothic or not.

As you check your squad, it seems Fortran is finishing up his work. You approach him. "How goes, Fortran?"

"No one's gonna die from bleeding, that's for sure. But if we want to avoid infections and actually treat them properly, we'll need to get back to camp or make a hospital inside the electric substation. That is, if squad two held their own." he says, wiping some fresh blood from the grimacing militia's arm as he bandages him.

He makes sure that his work is well done and gets up, the militia says "Thanks." to him over and over again. Fortran then asks to check your wounds, you take the cloak out of the way and he eyes it up. "You'll be fine, just needs some disinfectant and a bandage."

He proceeds to do his work, the disinfectant stings quite a bit, but you feel relaxed as the bandage finally blocks the wound from anything nasty that could come from the ambient.

"I'm done with the wounded." Fortran then looks at the enemy wounded with his tired brown eyes, he scratches his greying hair. "Should I take care of those too? One of them has a nasty bullet hole on his shoulder, might die in a few hours unless I treat him."

>Go ahead, Urayyin and Ratscher will probably want them alive.

A little of both. We'll ask them, then after Fortan is done treading everyone (was he already done?) He can treat them.

You approach the imprisoned, and they look up to you, checking your cloak for ensigns, probably. When they find none, you hear them muttering something in their language.

You cough once, hoping to get their attention, it's successful. You start talking in Low Gothic, you imagine at least one of these bastards know how to speak it. "Listen, traitors. There is only one way out of this alive, I imagine it's something you'd like since you surrendered. You boys will have to obey everything our bosses have to say and tell us absolutely everything you know about your force's movements."

They all nod, sadness settling in their faces, one of them speaks up with a thick Adrecharani accent. "We did not want this."

You look at him, is he hoping that you'll feel pity after he shot his gun towards your comrades? No way in the Warp. "Then why would you rebel, huh? Look at all your dead, look at your wounds and mine. This blood being shed. What did you expect?"

He looks at you with fire in his eyes, his ruffled brown and curly hair now showing through his nearly undone turban. "Our people were forced to rebel. Taxes, tyrant soldiers, forcing us to worship your God-Emperor. The Governor cares nothing for us, he's forced our hands for decades and we finally did what he wanted. We rebelled, because otherwise we would've died pitifully, without a fight, as we ran away from our homes and meddled with the rest of the lot of this planet. Our customs were thousands of years old, they did not care."

You,
>Kick him in the gut. How dare they shed blood and bring pain to so many over something so insignificant? Might as well have adapted. Now he'll have to give your higher ups answers or die.
>Ask him about who this governor is, and why they didn't report it to the Planetary Ruler. Try to convince him that justice will be served if he answers truthfully to your higher ups.
>Don't respond, simply repeat that they'll have to answer your higher up's questions. Go do something else.
>>
>>2438338

I understan their plight, but Frankly with the shit going on out there their culture is very, very insignificant, hell it could die out to a roving Chaos warband random raid.
Can we do write-in?
>>
>>2438445
Sure, but remember that your character only knows so much about the realities of the universe. You've been taught the Imperial Creed and the ecchlesiarchy's truth since you were a child.

>>
>>2438338
Eh I have no inspiration for a good write in, so I will just add to what the others said
>Recount the story of Pretoria and how their attachment to their own culture lead them to damnation and the doom of their people, only the Emperor can protect us all.
>>
>>2438733
Sure, lets mix some write ins.
>>
You think for a bit, trying to control your anger. Being hostile with these people will get you nowhere. You squat down, bringing your head to his level. "Who's this governor that got you all riled up? Why didn't your people report to the Ruler of the planet?"

"Governor Abertus Gronali." He responds. "Our leaders did report him, again and again, but the Ruler wanted nothing to do with it."

"And you don't understand why? Have you not heard of the legend of the Pretorian wastes?"

The young tribesman gulps, it's apparent that he knows something about it.

"They were foolish enough to challenge the Imperial Creed and the God-Emperor, and now look where they are. Look how many died, for what? Just to keep some ancient customs? When the Imperial Truth is here to unite the human race into a strong, imposing force?" You pause, watching his reaction. He looks down, seemingly ashamed.

"If you had let go of those traditions, or at least adapted them to the Imperial Creed, this wouldn't have happened, and your governor would probably have paid for his crimes. One way or another. Now, he will happily retire a condecorated war general when he quells down this useless rebellion. Your false beliefs led you to this defeat, and the complete extinction of your culture. Answer truthfully to my leaders, and they will probably show mercy to you even though they don't have to."

Again, the tribesman looks down. "I... I will do so." he says, defeated.

You notice that your fireteam gathered around you. "Corporal." says Rogard. "Good news, the right flank won in their battle, one dead and half the squad wounded. The Lieutenant and his bodyguard had to intervene, when that happened they made short work of whichever enemies remained."

You get up, leaving the crying soldier to be consoled by his four comrades. You turn to Rogard. "Thanks. I'll tell sarge about my talk with this tribesman when I see him." One dead, you wonder who it was that died. You'll pray for his soul.

Your squad looks up to you. Urayyin has not returned yet and everyone can walk by now. You take out your revolver and reload the two bullets you fired earlier. You see the young lad that got shot in the head approaching you, one of his eyes bandaged. "Sir, what do we do now?"

You're surprised by the question. Since when are you the sergeant? It's not like Urayyin is that far away. You see that the entire squad is awaiting your orders, their eyes gleaming with respect. "We should ask Urayyin when he gets back." You tell him.

"C'mon sir, we've seen you fighting the enemy along with us, with our same weapons instead of fancy swords, with the same amount of training we got. Urayyin's PDF, we're militia, you understand us better than he ever could."

"Uh..." You're not sure what to say. Honestly this is quite a surprising turn of events. Everyone is looking at you, awaiting your instructions.

You look at your men, you see weary faces who have seen much more than a person should have to see in his or her life. Blood, death, killing. But they've trucked through, this squad of yours, they've fought on and successfully defeated their enemies.

"We've done a lot today. Every single one of you has done something to win us this victory. Every single shot fired, every struggle against the enemy, has all been for the good of our city and our planet. All of you who stand here with me, with the sergeant, with the Lieutenant, in this 1st Regiment of Militia. You have all demonstrated your valour in front of the eyes of the God-Emperor, this valour which is just the same as that of any PDF or even the Imperial Guard!" You go quiet for a moment, seeing their faces, you see smiles, the youngest have tears in their eyes, the older are simply looking out to the field of dead in front of them, listening at points. The men of the heavy stubber team are also listening, but they seem busier looking at the woods, waiting for someone to come out to the killzone.

"Now, it is time to rest and mend our wounds. To thank the God-Emperor for the valour he infused into us, to thank the Machine Spirits of our weapons for being with us today and helping us defeat our enemies." You unsling your autogun and unsheathe your revolver, putting them on the ground delicately and taking a knee down to them. Your squad follows along and the hum of quiet prayer fills the air.

Your squad is now Loyal to you.

A bandaged Urayyin comes out of the substation and approaches as you pray. He takes out his autogun and sword and lays them down on the ground, he takes a knee by your side and also begins praying.

You thank the machine spirit of your autogun and revolver, for striking true at your enemies and allowing you to use them, and most importantly, you thank the God-Emperor for the survival of your squad and the defeat of your enemies. After a few minutes, you finish and get up. You see that your squad gets up as well. Urayyin following along. He speaks up,

"Men, you have been brave, braver and stronger than I could ever have hoped to ask from people who were living their daily lives not even a week ago. For your service I thank you, the God-Emperor will have you in his thoughts tonight." He says to the squad. You and the squad salute him, pride in your hearts with the recognition of the grizzled sergeant. Urayyin then beckons you over and starts walking towards the substation.

"Lieutenant Ratscher will have a word with you."

You gulp. "Is it bad?"

"No, not quite."
>>
>>2439401

You enter the substation for the first time since you're here. You see the stealth squad, all in good shape except for one, who has a bandage on his shoulder. You and Urayyin go up the first floor, then onto the third, where Ratscher and his burly bodyguard are watching over the battlefield. When Ratscher sees you, he swings his arms open and offers you a hug which you promptly accept, the bodyguard is not amused.

"Ah, Bolter Armstrong. Corporal Bolter Armstrong! You've done well today. Urayyin has told me you identified the enemy leadership and pretty much caused the rout of the enemy platoon." Ratscher says in High Gothic.

You shake your head. "The arrival of our heavy stubber team and sergeant Urayyin's guile has also allowed us to win the day, sir. He detected the enemy's heavy stubber team setting down as well, and our concentrated fire made sure that they could do nothing with them."

"I see. I also saw you battling that one tribesman, your last move on him was dexterous and able, even my Tarco was in awe of your abilities." He points to his bodyguard, who simply shrugs as he continues overlooking the front of the building.

"It was a team effort." You say, unsure of what to tell him.

"All in war is a team effort, my dear Armstrong. But individual bravery is to be praised. If you ever were to join the PDF or the Imperial Guard, you should contact me, I will give good word for you." He winks at you, something doesn't feel quite right about all this, but you nod nonetheless.

"I've also come to understand from Urayyin that you're an able leader of men." he says. "I was thinking of making you sergeant of your squad, so Urayyin may be redeployed to the PDF and lead men there."

You look at Urayyin, he seems unsurprised. "Do not worry." says Ratscher. "I've talked with him about this, he is eager to return with his men and will recieve my commendation for your excellent training as well."

Urayyin looks at you, neutral in his expression. "Yes, corporal Armstrong. You have demonstrated leadership qualities today, and my men back at the PDF have requested my return. Though if you do not feel ready yet, I will stay here and continue leading you."

Ratscher eyes up Urayyin, a smirk being drawn on his face. "Of course, the next corporal will be chosen by you." he says.

You stand firm, pondering exactly what all of this means. Losing Urayyin is to lose the most able member of your squad. But you becoming a sergeant means that your end reward in the civil war would be greater than ever, and you will have right to ascend even further. You,

>Accept.
>Refuse gracefully.
>>
>>2439406

I'll answer as if I were Ratscher so you can decide.

>would we be a sergeant under the lieutenant? More responsibilities? Do we get more training as a sergeant? We had a days worth of training.

"You would be sergeant under me, of course. The extra responsibilities is simply responsibility over your squad and to me, your Lieutenant, instead of Urayyin. You will get more training on how to lead your men and taking decisions in the field from me when we head back to camp, as we will be given a few days to rest and mend our wounds before going onto an operation again."

To Ratscher: what are your thoughts on this battle?

OOC: did we out shoot the enemy stubber teams, and can we retrieve they'd heavy stubbers?
>>
>>2439589
>>2439593
Anyhow, time to tell you what Ratscher is thinking:

You notice that Ratscher has bad blood with Urayyin, and that Urayyin would love to speak up against him and put him down on his place. You don't know what exactly got them fighting.

Apart from that, it seems obvious to you that Ratscher is in fact doing this for his own personal benefit. Showing off that under him, men prosper and become stronger and better, it's probably one of the reasons that he's making Urayyin leave, so he can't get any of the rep for finding a potentially good soldier in a rabble of militia.

You can tell that Urayyin would not spite you for taking his place, he simply despises Ratscher for some reason, and this is simply another point in a list of reasons to hate him.

Now choose your fate.
>>
>>2439662
>what are your thoughts on this battle?
"A very good result considering both fronts were nearly on a two to one ratio on amount of enemies."
>>
>>2439665
One final note, Ratscher will not be too happy if you refuse now, as he'll feel that you're more loyal to men like Urayyin than to men like him.
>>

Lol, Ratscher is quite attractive, yes. Shipping him with Bolter? I don't know, I'll let you guys decide his sexuality but you'll have to do a lot of charming and convincing to get into an ambitious nobleman's pants as a young man with no real titles or noble blood.

>>2439675
The ratio is only really such because we are fighting normal untrained Humans, I have long given up the Idea of having our squad survive once shit hit the fan with actually dangerous ennemies.
