You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

While traveling to the mountains where Janice and Artya's tribe of demi-humans were supposedly living at, you had run into a few issues. Some bandits, some Elven trickery, and even an exciting night time encounter with an Arjatar, a massive snake beast.

Well, the beast had been slain, and you decided it was best to make camp for the night, so you could properly process the corpse in the morning. A massive and dangerous beast like an Arjatar had very useful parts, after all.

"Camp here?" Morgan looks around. "Well, the terrain isn't exactly ideal, but hopefully the smell of the Arjatar will keep any more animals away."

"And it's better we not move Valentia around till she's fully treated." Naru adds as she pokes at Valentia's wound with a cleaning cloth.

"Agh! That stiiiiiings!" Valentia whimpers.

"Hey, if it was a cut or broken bone, I could've fixed it quick and easy in seconds." Naru sighs. "But nooooooo, you had to get yourself injected with Grade S venom. That stuff isn't so simple to get rid of."

"I suppose that settles it." Morgan sighs as she makes a high pitched whistle.

In the distance, you can hear Romulus howl and soon enough, the rest of the caravan converges on your position.

"Oh my, this is quite the catch." Elias' eyes glow in the darkness as he gazes on the Arjatar corpse. We waves his hand and the body begins to glow a soft blue. "I minor temporal spell to keep it from decomposing. We can handle things in the morning."

And soon enough, a rough base camp is set up. Nino and the Twins work to clear out an open space in the tall grass through controlled burn, though it was mostly Nino doing the burning and the Twins doing the controlling. Elias meanwhile began circling the wagons in a defensive posture and setting up the tents, while Janice was busy cutting slabs of flesh from the slain Arjatar to cook dinner.

You head over to the slain Arjatar, where Morgan is perched on top of it, the body providing a convenient vantage point to see over the tall grass. However, as expected, the field was now a sea of impenetrable darkness, only illuminated by Luna's light as well as the stars. You couldn't see much, but you had no doubt that Morgan easily could peer through the darkness.

"Hey." Morgan says simply as you clamber up the giant snake's corpse and settle down next to her.

You just pat her on the shoulder as you gaze out into the darkness.

"You know, you don't have to stay up here with me..." Morgan frowns.

You tilt your head curiously at her. Did she not want your company?

"D-don't give me that look!" Morgan stammers. "I'm not saying I don't want you around or anything!"

Sometimes you wonder what's going on in that head of hers.

"So..." Morgan kneels down next to you, easing up a bit, but her eyes were still scanning the distance carefully, never fully relaxed. "You wanted to talk about something?"

You were a bit curious about the strangely aggressive tendencies Morgan had been showing recently, particularly in battle. You pause as you try to consider how to convey this to Morgan.

You raise one of you hands and start opening and closing your fingers rapidly like the mouth of a barking dog.

"Are you saying... you think I'm talking too much..?" Morgan frowns in confusion.

Looks like you had to be a bit more elaborate.

You then raise your other hand as an opposing "head", and then have the hand representing Morgan lunge forward "bite" the other hand by the "neck" and shake it around.

Morgan just takes one look at your attempts to communicate to her and covers her mouth with her hands a she stifles her laughter.

You just shake your head and grab Morgan's tail to grab her attention. She yelps as her hairs stand on end.

You finally decide to go all out, pointing at Morgan, and then making quick stabbing motions int he air. She seemed to be acting a bit more violent than normal.

"I..." Morgan pauses and breaks eye contact for a brief, but noticeable moment. "I don't know what you're talking about."

You're quite for a moment. Even you could tell that was a rather blatant lie.

You lean even closer, close enough that Morgan's hot breath was filtering into your helmet as you continue to glare at her.

"A-all right, I'll talk!" Morgan concedes and you pull away to give her space.

"So..." Morgan pauses again, glancing at the camp. Everybody else was having dinner around the fire, and didn't seem to pay the two of you any heed. "Yeah, I do sometimes feel these... urges."

Well, that was one way to put it.

"Like... I see something I don't like and I get this desire, this NEED to tear it apart. With my hands, with my teeth, and then-" Morgan shakes her head quickly, as if to shake the image out of her head. "I don't know if it's because of this bow that made me this way, or if I've always been like this, but... well..."

Morgan than leans over and hugs you.

"I'm scared." She whispers. "I've talked to Janice about it and she says it's perfectly normal but... what if I'm different? What if I go too far and-"

You return Morgan's hug, but aren't quite sure what to say to calm her.

You pull away from Morgan's hug and jab a finger at Morgan's sternum. She's one of the most strong willed adventurers, or people in general, that you've ever met.

"Heh, you really think that?" Morgan chuckles weakly, understanding your meaning. "I'm not sure a lot of other people do."

You grab Morgan's tail again to snap her back to her senses.

"Eeeek!" She yelps, her ears standing straight up. "You're such a jerk!"

You cross your arms. You'll gladly be a jerk if you need to be.

"Hmph, guess I got no choice then." Morgan pouts. "I can't go disappointing your expectations, huh?"

You just respond with a well deserved headpat.

"Quit iiiiiiiit!" Morgan whines.

You can almost swear you could hear a familiar snickering in the darkness, but you ignore it.

With that, the campfire is snuffed out, and the other expedition members head into their tents for the night, leaving just you and Morgan sitting atop the Arjatar corpse. Without the light of the campfire, Luna's light was ever stronger, softly illuminating Morgan in its pale night.

"H-hey." Morgan frowns, her cheeks blushing.

You pause, wondering what was up.

"You've been staring at me an awfully long time, you know." Morgan mumbles. "You sure you're okay? Maybe you should get some rest."

You sweep up Morgan in your arms as you leap down to the ground. Perhaps the both of you needed some rest.

"W-what?!" Morgan squeaks. "Are we really going to-"

You put a finger up to your helmet to reminder to be silent as you point to the other tents, where soft snoring could be heard.

"B-b-but who will watch-"

Romulus then trots in, loyal as ever.

"I should've figured..." Morgan sighs as she admits defeat.

Thankfully there's still one vacant tent left, obviously meant for yours and Morgan's use and carefully carry her inside...

The next morning, both you and Morgan emerge from your tent to soak in Sol's energizing rays. Morgan pulls her hood up over her head in embarrassment.

"I can't believe we... right here... what if someone heard...?" She mumbles nervously.

You pat her on the shoulder. You think she did a very good job restraining herself. You're pretty sure the others weren't aware of it.

"Jeeeeeez." Naru yawns loudly as she emerges. "Fuckin' wolves howling all night. I could barely get any sleep."

"Indeed." Elias nods. "I had to dispel some of the security wards because the noise kept triggering them."

"Well, it's a good thing they kept their distance from the camp." Janice says simply as she walks by, though she gives you and Morgan a mischievous wink. Did she know...?

"Well, either way, let's get that damn thing cut up." Naru grunts as she points to the Arjatar. "We can bring some of the meat as food supplies, though there's some choice bits we can take."

"Like what?" Niko asks as she crawls out of her tent.

"Well, the scales can make some good leather armor." Naru points out. "The fangs could be worked into some weapon modifications, or converted into weapons themselves. And the eyes have some pretty serious magical properties."

"The eyes I could find some use for..." Elias' eyes glow bright.

"And, I mean, we should probably give something to Valentia, too." Naru suggests. "She did as much working taking down that snake as you did."

Well, you suppose it was only fair to divide the spoils equally. After all, you were all working together on this expedition.

So, the eyes would go to Elias for... whatever the mage was planning to use them for.

That left the question of who would take the fangs and scales. As Naru had pointed out, the fangs could be fashioned into weapons or weapon upgrades, while the scales could be used to build or augment armor.

You decide to take the fangs. You could think of good uses for them as weapons, especially since they apparently seemed to continue to produce venom from the tips, even though the Arjatar was long dead. There was a pair of fangs, which could either be used to augment the spear end of your halberd, or could be fashioned into dual blades that either Morgan or Niko could use.

"Don't worry! I'll take care of it!" Nino says happily as she snatches the fangs and your halberd. "I can get these fused together in no time!"

"Hey, be careful with those." Naru cautions. "One prick from those and a squirt like you will be dead in minutes."

"Don't worry, I'll be fine!" Nino assures you all as she dashes off to do... whatever she's going to do.

Soon enough, the camp is cleaned and packed up and the caravan continues on its way towards the mountains, which were now beginning to tower over you. The great walls of rock and snow being the final barrier between you all and your destination.

However, the caravan halts once again as Janice hops out of the lead wagon, gazing up at the sky. You and Morgan disembark as well to go see what's up.

"I don't like this smell." Janice glowers as the wind blows through. "A major storm is coming through."

"Will that impede our progress?" Elias asks, appearing next to Janice.

"I'm sure you can imagine what it's like to climb a mountain in the middle of a snowstorm." Janice shakes her head. "That's a tough one, even for use. And we normally don't have to worry about a bunch of wagons, too. The terrain is rough even in good weather."

"There has to be alternatives." Morgan frowns.

"There is, but you may not like it." Janice says grimly. "There's a cave network. We can always go through the mountains rather than over them."

You cross your arms. You feel a big "but" coming on.

"Buuuuuut," Janice adds, confirming your suspicions, "that would mean we would have to leave behind the wagons. And the caves aren't exactly the friendliest of places..."

"Ah, then we are at another crossroads." Elias muses, his skull gazing up at the sky. "It still looks clear. Perhaps we can beat the storm?"

"They come in fast, but it's possible." Janice replies.

You point up to the top of the mountain. Leaving behind the wagons did not sound like an appealing plan, and you'd rather try to beat the weather and brave the storm.

"Agreed. We shall proceed through the pass." Elias nods.

"All right, but don't say I didn't warn you." Janice sighs.

"Let's try to make the best time we can." Elias remarks as heads back to his wagon, prepared to keep going.

"Ugh, I don't like this, but I guess we have to dragged along for the ride." Janice sighs. "Still I would suggest we send a scouting party ahead of caravan. We have to find a suitable surface to keep the moving, after all.

While you had no objections to proper prudence and pragmatic thinking, you were still concerned about the incoming storm. If it were to sweep in unplanned as feared, then whatever scout party you send could get separated.

You shake your head. It was better to keep everyone close to the caravan in case the storm hit. No sense risking anybody getting separated.

"I suppose..." Janice nods somewhat skeptically. "Still, I'd keep your eyes and ears open."

"Of course." Morgan nods.

"Forward we go!" Elias announces as the floating wagons begin to move forward.

And... nothing happens.

Sol truly seems to have intervened, as the weather remains clear and sunny giving your caravan plenty of time to find a path through the cliffs and rocks and making good time.

"Amazing..." Janice says as her ears twitch, eyes still scanning the sky. "I was certain we'd hit a snowstorm by now."

You point to Sol, and then to His symbol emblazoned on your chestpiece.

"Maybe there is something to your sun worship." Janice smiles as Sol's rays fall upon her.

"The old bastard finally felt like doing something good for us for a change." Naru grunts.

"Hey! Are we converting them to the ways of Sol?" Valentia pops her head out of her wagon, thankfully seemingly fully recovered from the shot of Arjatar venom she had taken. "Is this going to be a religious mission as well?!"

"H-huh?" Janice blinks.

Morgan and Artya simply just shake their heads.

You nod proudly. This was a perfect time to teach a a newly discovered tribe the glory of Sol!

Valentia nods and gives you a thumbs up. This was one of the few things that Templars and Paladins could agree on.

"Hey, when you two are done jerking each other off," Naru grunts and points forward "What's that down there?"

Up ahead, you could see a vast, green and rocky plain extending before you, nestled in the mountains.

"Just the highlands before we reach the valley we live in." Janice explains. "It's pretty much a straight shot there, assuming we don't run into trouble."

"Trouble?" Valentia raises an eyebrow.

"Oh, you know, just the occasional large animal attack." Janice shrugs. "Shouldn't be too much to worry about, though."

"No choice but to continue forward." Elias declares.

And so the caravan continues to move forward.

As the caravan continues through the open highland plain, you note that Janice and Artya were keeping their eyes glued to the sky. And, well, you could understand why. An open plain like this provided little to no cover, yet the high peaks and cliffs bordering these highlands provided the perfect habitat for flyers.

And sure enough, there's a loud shriek as a large, scaled, flying creature swoops by overhead.

"A storm drake!" Morgan's eyes widen.

"Coooooool!" Nino cheers as she pokes her head out of her wagon. "That's like, one step off from an actual dragon!"

You don't say...

The storm drake roars, sounding like a loud boom of thunder as it continues to fly through the air, circling around the caravan.

"What's it doing...?" Niko asks warily.

"Just observing us. "Janice narrows her eyes. "It won't attack if it's not hungry and if we're not venturing into its territory."

The caravan continues on, and thankfully ,the storm drake seems reluctant to come any closer, no doubt discouraged by your numbers. After about an hour or so, it eventually breaks off and flies off for different parts.

Janice then leads the caravan to a spot hemmed in by some low hills that were just high enough to protect against the powerful winds blowing across the highlands, and things grind to a halt.

"Lunch time!" She says happily. "Let's take a break, everyone!"

As the rest of the expedition sit down to eat lunch, you note Janice and Elias moving off to the side, no doubt to plan the route ahead. You follow them over to try and get the gist of what was going on.

"It should be roughly another day until we get to our village." Janice says, pointing to an unmarked spot on Elias' map. "Like I said before, it should be a straight shot there from here."

"I see." Elias nods. "And the weirwood?"

"We'll pass by a section of the forest on the way to the village, so you'll get a chance to see some of it."

You look to Janice and point in the direction of her village, and then point to her. Were you going to run into any other demi-humans like her on the way there?

"Running into some of my tribe on the way? That's a distinct possibility!" Janice nods happily. "Especially once we get into the forest valley. That's where our main hunting grounds are. We only very rarely venture into the highlands, since prey is pretty scarce up here, honestly."

"Ah yes, your tribe." Elias' eyes flash. "Is there a greater diversity of... animal kind represented among you? Species apart from mammals?"

"Oh, all kinds!" Janice replies happily. "You'll have to see it for yourself!"

"I look forward to it." Elias nods and mutters, "This will certainly be an enlightening expedition..."

"And you!" Janice grins as she pats you on the shoulder. "I suspected there was something between you and little Morgan, but I didn't you two that far along already! So cute!"

"Hm?" Elias raises his head, his attention piqued.

That Janice...

"So... you planning to have any kids? I'll gladly be the godmother, just saying!" The wolfwoman continues.

"Haha, you don't have to answer right away, I was just curious!" Janice laughs. "Don't sweat it too much!"

"I believe I don't quite understand what you two are talking about..." Elias mutters.

"Don't worry about it!" Janice laughs again. "Another thing to learn in the future, I guess!"

You, for your part, were glad that Elias was a bit ignorant on this subject.

"Anyways, good luck, you two!" Janice winks at you. "I'll be rooting for the both of you!"

Janice then skips off to the rest of the expedition to join in on lunch.

"Very nice of her to wish us both luck." Elias nods.
