"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon

Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden.

Pietre Verdun Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from.

Unhappy Sam Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.

‘Snake’ Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further.

‘White Bitch’ Tara Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.

Twice-in-One-Day Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Arlen Rivers Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine.

'Jack' Marcus Slain while retaking the North Tower, his sacrifice saved his squad and perhaps the Company.

Recap

Five days ago your dread employer, the Necromancer, said that he would arrive to relieve the Company and others under siege at Kresden in three days. Four days ago the Free Alliance began their assaults in earnest, an endless wave of Neumunster Legions, Chevalisse Banners, Helenwood support units and more. There is still no sign of the Necromancer or his undead army.

For four days and nights the Black Company has held out. Time and time again, when the line was faltering and the walls breached, you led the 7th Kreigstrom Platoon from the front and turned back the tide. It has been the harshest fight you’ve experience while leading a whole platoon, and it has not been kind to you or your people. You have lost new friends and lifelong comrades with each passing day. The price of victory after victory has been steep, not least being your immortal soul.

The powers and unholy might you have gleaned from your dark pacts and broken oaths have given you the strength to win time and time again, to tear apart the greatest heroes of the Alliance sent to slay you. And to protect your own men, as much as you can, from the cold clutches of death. Tonight you lead the Kriegstrom to victory over the Highlanders, cementing their reputation as the greatest fighting force on the continent, and perhaps the world.

But you are not the same man. You do not laugh at SGT ‘Bad Hands’ bawdy jests any longer, you do not fret over CPL Saint’s future or flirt badly with Captain ‘Kiranova’. You have no need of food or drink, nor do you seek the company of your fellow man.

You are Lieutenant ‘Prince’, the Black Prince of the Company. You are what the Black Company needs right now to live another day. A monster.

Kresden North Wall Breach, Day Four, Late-Evening

The giant Highlander O’Brien stares at you with maddened eyes, his massive blade held easily in one hand. The other hand points and accusatory finger at you.

”I say ye come an’ face me ye pisstakin’, magik wand usin’, creepy-crawly fekkin'…”

It makes perfect sense to risk only your own life to avoid harm coming to your men. The Northern Coast and Skald tradition of the Circle, where two champions fight to the death, may be a barbaric tradition, but you figure it must be miles less cruel and wasteful than wasting the lives of two armies for the same result. Why agree to a duel when you hold all the cards though? This Highlander’s men lay dead all around him.

”Prickly armour wearin’, funeral fashion lovin’…” And he is still insulting you.

”I grow tired of this man-ape. Fire away, Spicario.” Your voice comes out as a growl.

>3 SUCCESS 3 = O'Brien is gunned down like a dog. The sword remains, right there for the taking.

”COWARD!” The clansman roars, stepping forward to try and close the distance. ”The Green Girl will know ye and find ye, craven bastard son-of-a-“

”With pleasure, signore.” The Sabari musketeer grins fiercely as she fires musket after musket into the colossus of a man, a hard target to miss at that range. She has five or six pistols similar to yours, she fires and discards each one in a hail of gunpowder and shot. The Rangers under LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams add to the firing line, crossbow bolts and arrows sinking into O’Brien and his sole surviving comrade McNeil. Even the Ajiyimad turncoats contribute a few musket rifles to the volley.

Within seconds there is very little left that would distinguish the famed Lachlan O’Brien from a slab of meat on the butcher’s block. And the sword; Claíomh Na Sléibhte, The Sword of the Mountains, remains planted blade first in the rubble. It is a mighty creation, older than Skarling Kingbreaker and the Neumunster Empire itself. Something to match Cairsun the Morning Light’s own magical weapon.

Your mailed gauntlet pauses, hovering over the hilt for a moment.

You're telling me that you don't consider last thread to have been an unreasonably lucky bullshit time? Sure, Prince sacrificed his soul to become far more powerful but I had never intended the Highlanders to be that much of a pushover!

Warping it would have let it become even more relevant to our actual power set. As it is, it's a nice sword is all.

Also we just flipped off the Dark Father. Little late to worry about Gods and shit.

Unless we could negotiate with this Lady Isabella. I mean. I don't think we have a good rep anymore but maybe? If she's a Goddess she's certainly seen Gods and men break their words before.

You look to your left as Cairsun the Morning Light, your bodyguard, leans nonchalantly against his own magik blade, the fires cooled to a dull warm heat. He gives you a telling look, it is his job to guard you after all.
”Many years ago, a powerful wizard attempted to turn my own blade against me. It did not end well for him.” Cairsun the Morning Light shrugs, indifferent to your position. ”Perhaps you are more puissant than he. Perhaps not.”

Tendrils of black mist leak from your fingertips reaching for the sword hilt, eager to try the power of Below against whatever force drives the mighty weapon. You banish them with a thought, and grasp the blade with both hands. You use your unholy strength to lift the massive weapon, but you do not attempt to impose your unholy will upon it. Below or Fae, it matters not. The blade will cut all the same. Claíomh Na Sléibhte, The Sword of the Mountains, is yours.

It occurs to you that you now own three magikal blades. It is too much to carry, so it might be time to distribute them amongst your minions. ”What of you, Bad Hand? Fancy being the proud owner of a magik blade?”

SGT Bad Hand doesn’t physically recoil at the offer, but his lip does curl up. ”By Below’s balls, no brother. I’ve seen what magik does to a man. I’ll keep to my own blade, sharp and sweet and very unmagikal. She ain’t likely to cheat on me.”

His answer is nonsensical, but you have grown used to his eccentricities. If he doesn’t trust magik weapons that is his issues. And maybe, looking at you, he is not wrong to be suspicious of such power.

Your Corporals exchange looks. Corporal ‘Hard’ Hida eyes her chipped blade ruefully, Corporal Hirstun of Ligh is still giddy with joy at the capturing of two Eagle standards and CPL Saint already has her Nightblade. Behind them, the Lance-Corporals ‘Murder’ Meriam, ‘Joker’ Schuster and the Skald Lerrek Jurgensen pointedly try not to appear to eager that prospect of magikal loot.

A means of garnering the excess HBFM energy and (depending on success) using it offensively. However, there would have been a very real of failure or even harm to Prince. In meta terms, it would have pissed off another near-diety against the Black Company.

Keeping the blade was certainly the safer option, mechanical and story wise.

”Corporal Hida, Lance-Corporal Schuster, step forward.” You clawed gauntlets gesture the two mortals forward. Corporal 'Hard' Hida approaches and accepts the magik weapon without much hesitation, but Lance-Corporal Caroline 'Joker' Schuster is more cautious and drags her feet.

”Sir.” CPL ‘Hard’ Hida nods her thanks as you hand her your well-used sword of sovereignty. The enchantment appears to be in the hilt, so the blade may need to be reworked. There is an awkward moment while you wait for her to say something, but she doesn’t. She does appear more regal and ‘commandery’ though.

”Fek yeah, boss! Simple country gal gets a magik sword.” LCPL Joker stops hunching in fear for a moment and tries to hide her glee with a jest as she receives the Harkenhoff Blade. A looted ancestral weaponry worth her weight in silver probably, you just hope she doesn’t lose it in cards. ”I’m just like the gal in the stories, innit?”

”An uglier, sluttier version maybe.” LCPL ‘Murder’ Meriam says snidely, green with envy.

”Fek you, bitch-tits.” CPL ‘Joker’s heart isn’t in it though, she busy smiling at the magik sword. Her magik sword.

”Lieutenant Prince.”

You and the members of your command come to attention, though sheer exhaustion and weariness makes their response and stance more slack than generally acceptable. After such an effort and so total a victory, the Captain does not appear to care at the lapse in discipline. She waves you down.

”At ease, for feks sake.” Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova walks down your lines as the men pick over the dead, a nod here or pat on the back and shared laugh with a trooper there. She is cold, your Captain, but not oblivious to the duties of command. She winces occasionally as she walks through your ranks, her left arm is still wrapped in a bloody sling. The Captain stops in the centre of the bloodied field and turns to face all of the Kriegstrom, now standing at ease and sagging with exhaustion. ”Well fought. You have earnt your place in the books today, 7th Platoon. All of you. Lieutenant Prince, when you are done here, officer meeting.”

”At the command tent?” You and the Captain both look at the remains of her forward command post, now in flames and collapsed under the weight of dead Black Company infantry and Highlander clansmen.

”I will see you at the manor.” Captain Kiranova smiles, though it is the smile of a confident commander. Not the genuine smiles she used to give you. You stare at her departing figure for a moment before turning to your NCOs.

”Report.”

”We fekked ‘em!” SGT Bad Hand grins, yellowed teeth flashing as he lights up another smoke.

CPL Hirstun of Ligh leans against some fallen masonry with a thoughtful look. He nods, his words of wisdom found, then stops and looks at you like a man who hadn’t heard of Skarling Kingbreaker. ”…you do realise we took TWO eagles today right?”

”I’m telling you, we -fekked- ‘em!” Bad Hand chuckles after taking a glorious drag.

”We inflicted maximum casualties on the enemy, other units sustained heavy casualties before the arrival of 7th Platoon but after our deployment-“ SGT Bad Hand fake-coughs loudly, CPL Hard Hida nods and continues. ”The Sergeant’s assessment is accurate. We fekked them.”

” We won, sir. And we took on the famed Highlander's without losing a single man.” CPL Saint nods, she seems pleased with how the squads performed under her command while you were bashing away at their leader. ”But the platoon is on their last legs, they haven’t had moment to breath throughout the day after 4 separate battles. A band of Helenwood troubadours could brush past us right now. Thankfully this Lord Lorgia has the breach covered.”

The irony of the ex-Heigelen Saint being grateful for the assistance of murderous vampires is not lost on you. You are not sure why LCPL ‘Joker’ is blushing as she stares at her new toy, but you dismiss it. ”Recommendations?”

”Feed the platoon, get them some mandated rest. Or, just let them do as they please for tonight. They’ve earnt some respite, sir. And most might take the food and sleep over drink and laughter anyway.” With the dark rings under her eyes and tussled, blood-matted hair CPL Saint herself seems like she would be part of the latter group, the other NCOs seem torn between partying like it’s their last night in the world of the living or the sweet oblivion of sleep.

Is this something that should be put to a vote or left to the discretion of the QM? You all knew what you were doing when you voted for Black Prince.

Either way, pic related is no longer an accurate portrayal of what Prince looks like under the helm.

You consider CPL Saint's words for a moment then nod. You must remember how frail your mortal minions are.

”An evening’s furlough, with pay. As you say, they have earned it.”

”You heard the boss, lads. Drinks on him tonight!” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien pumps a victorious fist in the air. The response is universally positive, this hellish day is at last over.

”Yaaay.” The ragged Kriegstrom finish licking their wounds and slowly trudge after a laughing SGT Bad Hand towards the nearest source of ale. Some are more energetic than others, the surviving members of Hirstun’s Dozen cheer raucously as they parade the captured eagles. Crackfoot laughs uproariously as Godric Golden prods him in the behind with one of the eagles and chases him past a glowering Trooper ‘Smiles’ that is literally carrying a snoring Nissar Belhamun.

”Er, you am wanting buy drink?” The wild-haired Skald Corporal Jurgensen says to the tall and Corporal ‘Hard’ Hida. He seems ruddy, his face is already flushed despite not having reached the bar yet.

”Drinks are on the Lieutenant, Lance-Corporal Jurgensen.” Corporal Hida replies with a serious expression, undoing the ponytail currently caught on her pauldron.

”Then… me am keep your company?”

”I know you are remaining a part of the Company, Lance-Corporal. Membership of the Black Company is for life.” Corporal Hida attempts a reassuring smile, unsure why the little Skald man was not made aware of this before he signed up.

”Ah… Ja.” The wildman’s face falls for a moment. Then he shrugs and follows the Corporal, muttering in his home tongue.
”Ég held að þetta sé upphaf, að minnsta kosti.”

”Me kill barþjónn, er... bartend? Me kill bartend, and no pay. Smart, ja?“ It appears that the other skalds, Utred Horst and Hans Rusti, have fallen in with the troublemaking Hasselholf twins.

“Yeah sure, but then you have to pour your own drinks. Lose-lose, right?“ Olly‘s brother Oliver nods sagely. “But if you just threaten them...“

LCPL ‘Joker’ Schuster is still smiling warmly at her blade and turns around to an approaching figure.

”Hey Durvy check out my new… ah, right. Shit.” ‘Joker’s face falls. It’s not the ex-pirate Trooper Vendis Durvano at all, just Corporal Saint.

”Come on, Caroline.” CPL Saint forces a smile, hand on the LCPL’s shoulder. ”Let’s grab something to drink.”

”Yeah.” Murder Meriam says fake-punching Cairsun the Morning Light in the gut. He does not react, as she skips about in a boxer stance. ”I killed, like… three Chevalisse today. Let’s get tits-up shit-faced!”

”Holy Mother, Murder. You’re fekked up.” Corporal Saint sighs, shaking her head. It appears that the Lance-Corporal is only ever invigorated after killing Chevalisse. Saint decides that she never wants to find out why that is.

”And I haven’t even started drinking yet!” Murder goes in for another punch against Cairsun, but the warrior has her in an arm-lock in moments. ”Owowowow, okay let go! Yeesh. Hey, where did Spicario go?”

”The Sabari musketeer? Said she had to see someone about a Grenn.” Trooper Lokrey Brittle and Trooper Harper take up the rear with the ever-silent Mask, already discussing whether Trooper Brittle should get a hook or a fake hand if his wounded limb gets infected and needs to be removed. You don’t know when those three started hanging out together, or why the sought out Mask as a member of their drinking team. Or even how that would work.

The banter between the various groups dies off as they leave your earshot. Some small part of you smiles to see your brother and sisters in black, the greatest soldiers in the world, trundle off to a pub run together. A day like this deserves a strong pint or twelve. You can barely remember the last time you were paid. Before the siege began, certainly. And old shell of yourself almost grins at the prospect of payday after this nightmare. Assuming you all survive.

Soon enough you are left alone in the carnage. After the second day, everyone stopped caring about the corpses, too many or damaged even for the cultists to raise now. The siege would be over one way or another long before disease set in. Eventually it is just you, the dead, and the Vampires guarding the breach.

Lord Lorgia does not take much convincing.

”As you command, sire.”
You manage to hide your surprise. You did not expect the vampire to agree to your daring raid so readily. You had felt certain that he would at least object to being carried their via dragon.

”You wield true Power. I will do as you bid in either case, Prince of Black. Lord Lorgia eyes you warily as he nibbles on the arm of what you assume is an unfortunate Neumunster or Highlander. ”Answer me this though, Dread Lord. Has your Company ever accepted the service of a Vampyr?"

Now you cannot help but show your surprise.

”Why would that interest you? If we win here, the Necromancer will have won. An entire realm under his command and you as one of the leading nobility. You will have no shortage of bloodlings to choose from. You would probably tire of our Company and try to desert.” You incline your helm, remembering a face. ”You would not be the first deserter I have killed.”

”The blood of a thrall or meek slave-thing is so… bland? Plenty of my kin, including my twice-dead sire Vermillio, would be content with a mound of corpses and orgies. Myself, I have only ever felt truly sated when sinking my fangs into a foe on the field of battle, as it should be. Generations of seeking out battles and blood, with mortal comrades to guard my sleeping form during the day? It seems to be a good deal to me.”

”And your kin, they would wish to join also?”

Lord Lorgia nods, apprehensively. ”One or two, perhaps. Power calls to Power. They even share my views of ‘earning’ their meals. Most, however, will remain in this new world our Master intends to build.”

Really though, she's probably just after the fluffy cuddles.

“Why are you so eager to be away from the Necromancer?”

”Under my sire, Count Vermillio, we would have kept his deranged sister Superior Syka in check. But he disappeared in the madness of what happened at Sarsburg, now she has the Master’s ear. I am not sure I wish to be a part of whatever craziness she would get up to with the resources of an empire at her disposal. Mountains of sacrifices in ziggurats full of her cultists and failed experiments, can you even imagine? Under our Master’s reigns the vampires would her tools, not independent.” If Lord Lorgia is lying you are unable to tell short of outright dominating him to speak the truth.

In the end, you decide that this is above your pay-grade. It is for the Captain to decide whether to accept the Vampire Lord into your ranks, even at the risk of raising the ire of the Necromancer or his witch sister. ”I will speak to the Captain. I doubt she will turn down such an offer.”

”I am grateful for your patronage, Prince of Black.” Lord Lorgia inclines his head, the light of dying fires around the battlefield reflects off the fangs in his smile. ”My Blood Knights and the rest of the Court will move out at your command.”

It is a long walk to the Manor alone, snow is starting to build up in the streets enough that you leave prints. It is not white though, muddied through the tramp of mercenary columns and undead battalions. Fearful eyes watch your menacing figure from behind closed shutters and drawn curtains in the streets of Kresden.

The Captain of the Yellow Dogs, Clayton, and the leader of the Ajiyimad Turncoats, Sabn-Ibn-Abad are in the doorway to the command room. Their conversation hushes as you approach. Sabn-Ibn-Abad inclines his head stiffly. He has still not forgiven you for your blasphemous practice of raising the allied dead, but he is wise enough not to test you.
”Mighty feats today indeed, Emir Prince.”

Clayton of the Yellow Dogs is less wise, blocking your way to the command room. For a moment the two of you square off. The man must have a death wish.

”Prince. You killed good today.” He grunts, stepping aside with a nod. He throws the Turncoat Ajiyimad commander a meaningful look as you pass. ”There walks a badass motherfekker, Aji.”

Upon your arrival at the command room the officers of the Black Company and their attendants cheer loudly, your previous execution of one of their number just yesterday already forgotten apparently. The Ajiyimad and Yellow Dogs officers thump the table in approval, and even a few of the cultists cheer boisterously with the handful of Tassenland officers left.

”There he is!”

”Two eagles! I didn’t believe it until I saw them myself but… two-fekking-eagles!”

”They said the Highlander’s couldn’t be beaten, and now look at them!”

”I personally rezzed three Highlanders today, they don’t look so scary when they’re just walking zombies heheheh.”

”Quiet, give him some space!”

Captain Kiranova allows you to bask in their praise for a few more moments before she taps her sheath against the table, calling the meeting of officers to order.

”We are all grateful to Lieutenant Prince and his men for their efforts. Without him, we would be lost.” Kiranova pauses, her cold eyes covering the room. ”But we have not won yet. The Free Alliance remains in their siege lines, even if their taste for assaults

”We don’t know how many of their heavy hitters are left. The Paladin Grandmaster? If he survived the fall.” LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams shrugs. ”I’ve lost half a dozen men trying to map out their lines. Helmer dan Gorst, the retired war hero, is still alive. As is their General. Leaders, not warriors. We know the hunger is hurting them, at this point starving us out simply isn’t an option for them.”

Demagogue Jale -bows- to the Captain before speaking, still covered head to toe in bandages over his burns. ”Our cultists are almost entirely spent. We have an abundance of corpses, thanks to the efforts of you fine soldiers, but lack the ethereal energy and preparation to meet demand with our current numbers.”

”We can hold out for another day as they work up their courage. Maybe two.” Captain Clayton turns to Kiranova, shrugging again. His tone has shifted to a more respectful one as of late. ”After that, they win through sheer attrition. We won’t have the numbers to even cover the walls.”

”Will our ‘esteemed employer’ get off his arse before then?” One of the Black Company infantry officers mutters. Several of the cultists glare murderously. Neither your or the Captain let slip that he was supposed to have arrived yesterday according to his last communication.

”Perhaps we can break them tonight.” Expectant silence greets your rumble, everyone in the room waits on your next words. It has not gone unnoticed that you have not removed your helm. ”I have been discussing the idea of a raid with Lord Lorgia and his Vampires. We had initially discussed just slaughtering as many as we could but with your maps LT Adams, perhaps we can strike where it matters.”

”You grow more daring every day, Lieutenant.” The Captain raises an eyebrow at you. She knows that the old you was never one to willingly volunteer for these sorts of mission unless fear or greed motivated you. ”And it is an interesting proposal the Lord Lorgia makes. I will consider it.”

”I must also consider that, on tonight of all nights, the Free Alliance would not expect us to steal away in the night and regroup with our employer.” There is grumbling agreement from the other officers, before escape hadn’t even been an option. But now? The Free Alliance likely would not even be able to contest it until they recovered. ”I am not sure that we can afford risking you, our ace in the hole, to this raid.”

A lifetime ago Kiranova calling you her ace in the hole would have been met with a flushed face or a particularly dirty joke. Now it barely even registers in your warped mind.

I read this as party after the massacre which also works, I guess. Btw, if you destroy the leadership entirely there isn't really anyone to order the Free Alliance to stop fighting. You'd need to have -someone- of at least Legion Commander level alive to give orders.

>>2372448
Far from it. Not even a fifth of the of the Free Alliance forces arrayed before you have died at Kresden. But they -have- experienced defeat after defeat. Much like Rorke's Drift, they British didn't kill all or even most of the Zulus. But they did make attacking them so costly and wasteful that they gave up.

Humans are troublesome creatures anon, it is far easier to break them than kill literally all of them.

The thing about getting the bad end, with all of the cool characters killed off or so far off the rails of what used to make them compelling is that it makes choices like these meaningless.

On separate note, that image is killing me "Jesus fuck Ed, it's just a map calm down."

Damn son, whose death hit you hardest?

It does look like an entire sword was planted in the map, not a dramatic dagger stab.

>>”Holding Kresden wasn’t about beating this Free Alliance host, it was about surviving. This is our chance to get out alive.” You have no intention of gambling with your men’s lives. Leaving under the cover of drkness is the safest option by far, damn the Necromancer’s displeasure. You held for as long as you could and bloodied the Free Alliance’s nose doing it. [Experience]

I already made my vote but we can't afford losing men. It's best that we leave it seems that the Necromancer is basically trying to kill off the Black Company through rules lawyering the boon we got.
>>
>>2372458
I mean it not all over though is it? Wouldn't that mean we haven't met our end of the bargain?

I kinda wonder if that boon is part of why he is late, a bit of pettiness on his part. We can't walk away if we are all dead after all...

Actually none really hurt except kid, but I did like most of the "old guard" and they're dead now, and I count saint in that bunch too, so It's like a case of "why care, there isn't anything to care about anymore?"
I know you've been about brutally following what the dice decree since the start man, but maybe next quest(in addition to actually giving us a chance to complete at least SOME of the side quests) you could be a little more restrained about killing off the backbone of what makes your quest good.

Just an FYI, fleeing in the dark of night would have been closer to what pre-Officer Prince would have chosen. He has changed.

Locking in Balls Deep to Glory.

-----------------------------------------
The Free Alliance still numbers in the several thousands, your many victories have done little to dent their numbers, more columns of Free Alliance have been arriving from distant borders every day. Even the rampages of Asgorga has been little more than pissing against the fire. But every victory has been felt by them. Oxenfurt was the first real victory they had experienced in a long time, and it is already a distant memory in the face of the horrors of Kresden.

War is not about killing. It is about winning, and being seen as winning. Despite the balance of power, the Company stands victorious. The Free Alliance is this close to crumbling, you can almost feel it.

"Their spirits are low, their leadership massacred. This is our chance to break them.”

The Captain laughs, most of the officers present chuckle along with her nervously.

"I will not have it written in the annals that the Company turned tail and ran when the chance of victory was so close." Kiranova stands, right hand slamming onto the table. "You will have your chance at greater glory, my Prince. The raid will proceed. Win me this war."

"Dismissed." The officers file out, for once smiles and shark-like grins can be seen. For so long it has been a hopeless struggle to buy time, but now? The story of the Battle of Kresden could be something to live in legend forever, with them as the heroes. Mercenary heroes get paid damn well, that is for sure. Now they just have to live to spend it. Kiranova gestures for you to wait as the last of the mercenaries and cultists leave. "Lieutenant Prince, a word."

[1/2]
>>
>>2372497
>>2372515
I really have to disagree with you anon, I think the fact that any of them can die is one of the main reasons I stay invested in the story. It adds a lot more weight to choices.
>>
>>2372433
Actually thinking about it since its basically these two options could be do both the leadership massacre "AND" escape? Use the night distraction to allow our forces to escape.

I never got around to calculating the DC. The storing of the HP would have replaced the -d5 armour malus.

0 = The Lady laughs at your efforts. The sword vanishes. Prince loses all extra health and takes damage.
1 = The sword vanishes and Prince loses all excess HP.
2 = The sword remains, Prince can now store excess HP in the sword, with a transfer rate of 3/1.
3 = Claíomh ó Bhun na Sléibhe The Sword from Beneath the Mountains. The sword can store excess HP. This can be transfered to either HP at 1/3, or combat DC at 1/2.

>SANCTUARY. Once the ‘Big One’ is concluded, the Black Company is paid up-front and allowed to leave. They are also off-limits to Superior Syka for the most part.
> They are also off-limits to Superior Syka for the most part.

The Company's lawyers would like to have words with Syka. It will involve pointy, not meaty sticks.

>>2372515
Interesting characters and story, nice worldbuilding, meaningful choices and conflicts, emotional and inspiring moments. Forgotten has delivered all of this, and he's still doing it.

If you don't care much about the Quest after a few deaths, it's your choice anon, but don't pretend others can't understand what makes a story good.
>>
>>2372534
Shit my nigger... probably would have been a low DC though...
>>
>>2372540
Mechanics wise fantastic, yes. On the fluff side of things, the Company does not need the Lady Isabella as a personal enemy. She is easily on the level of the Wild King or the Necromancer, but just nowhere near as involved in foreign politics.

I'm sticking to my guns about the 'anyone can die in rolls' part, I believe that is what has driven anons to abandon Prince's humanity to keep what is left of his men alive at any cost. I have always hated the idea of plot armour, and clearly putting characters at real risk like when Kiranova was a potential casualty got some anons worked up.

That said, there probably should have been more threads dedicated to down time and side-quests. Some of those were presented, but always at the expense of some other important task.
>>
>>2372550
>meaty sticks

Now I can't stop imagining Syka ahegoing while pierced by Black Prince's 2-hander...
>>
>>2371573

Keep the POV until a character dies, then change it to another character who witnesses the death.

It would make it feel like the reader was seeing war through the eyes of every member of the Black Company.

each death would be personal.
>>
>>2372555
So can we maybe negotiate with this Lady Isabella?

We need a safe base in coming times, she could probably use a strong arm.

Besides, we DO have her sword. We COULD donate kills to her instead of us, or the DF. Not sure if she would take them or not, better try that first BEFORE asking for things.
>>
>>2372555
Also, to be fair, Kid was our fault and arguably also losing our company Medic didn't help things.
>>
>>2372588
Yeah there's no way that's happening lmao why would she agree
>>
>>2372597
Because we're a mercenary company and she just lost a bunch of Highlanders. I mean hey souls check it out.

Maybe she could get Saint . . . wait no, that's over for her.

Still. Maybe she would be better for the 4th to follow than the DF.

”By the seven hundred shitting saints, Prince. We might actually make it out of this alive.” When the door closes Kiranova sighs and slumps into her chair, pouring herself a cup of fine Tassneland Red looted from the Manor cellars. ” And it’s all thanks to you! Wine?”

”I have no need of food. Nor drink.”

”…I know you did something, Prince. Some kind of deal to make you what you are. “ Kiranova pauses mid-sip, turning to look at you. One leg is kicked up on the table. ”I know you did it for us.”

She gulps down the entire goblet in one go and doesn’t break your gaze, even though all she sees is the faint glimmer of red where your scarred eye should be.

”Fine, I’ll drink for the both of us. At least take off that bloody armour.

(1) Prince's Form

>”I… I will not. It would be bad for morale.” Prince is able to take off his armour, but his corrupted features only remotely resemble that of a human. Even Kiranova's stomach is turned. Scarred blue skin and black veins, shapes of faces in the skin…

Will becoming a wraith mean that we cannot become/obtain a stronger armor?

I guess it is a moot point anyway. If/when there is a jump with the BC in another world it would be cool if Prince's armor was there, kind of like a relic whose true purpose was long forgotten.

I kinda find Prince being a waith more tragic, which is why I like it. He gave everything for the Company, even his ability to enjoy small things like good drink or a morning shave. Asgorga drops us off high above the Mages and then flies off to to burn shit elsewhere.

We use the Vampires reduced floaty powers to slow our fall.

We should sacrifice some of the weaker Vampires to ourselves to strengthen the others with the extra blood.

Or have the ones going with us be allowed to capture a couple civilians stuck in the city. Criminals and Bureaucrats and such, people nobody will miss.
>>
>>2371719
If we have Asgorga launch a series of hit and run attacks on the rear with orders to disengage if confronted, we can have a second force of Vampires and undead be waiting to charge out and attack the forces by the gate while we work our way towards it. Maybe we could dress the undead up like Vampires?

And then we could just have the undead be ordered to run into the ranks as far as they can to cause confusion while we run back to the city.
>>
>>2371719
*Have the undead carry bundles of burning stuff and run as deep into enemy ranks as possible.

Fuck up their night vision. Added confusion.

Alternatively we could just bury ourselves alive somewhere safe to throw off pursuit. Pretty sure we could survive that.

Prince being damned for all eternity isn't bad end. Losing this siege and only handful of plot-armoured Company members left to carry the annals isn't bad end. Everyone dying, including Prince and your shit waifus, isn't even bad end.

Losing the annals is Bad End.
Prince surviving while the Company is destroyed is Bad End.
Prince surviving, in some twisted form, as the Company dies and is ressurected as Undead and serve him and the Necromancer/Syka for eternity AND losing the annals is BAD END.

You think this siege is suffering? This is suffering-lite, this is diet-suffering. Things can still get so much worse for the end.

I understand that anons are worried about samefagging. When counting them up for next thread I will determine whether there is a vast difference in results due the 1 IP voters. I will hopefully have that combat system mechanics for the anon who requested it, though for the most part I believe it is fairly open.

In the meantime, is there any particular piece of lore or something about the setting anons would like to know more about? We can assume Prince talked to the Annalist about it.

>>
>>2385902

>>
>>2385902
Cross-checking the partial true name of the Necromancer with previous employers of the Company totally counts as piece of lore, right?

If not, more info on Skarling Kingbreaker.
>>
>>2385910
Simply put, hundreds of years ago when Skarling Kingbreaker was still in living memory and Sabari had only just become the 'Sabari Isles' , a small nation to the East of Sarsburg and South/West of Ajiyimad suddenly went silent.

Few who traveled there returned alive. They spoke of rotting corpses still moving in the fields and darker, fouler things abroad in the land. Hundreds of years of nothing. No movement and only rumours. Sarsburg stood strong along the Weylan River, and the ongoing wars against the Warlord and Wild seemed more pressing.

Given the nature of the Necromancer's force, when he attacked in earnest it did not take long for even a few losses to snowball into a threat of monstrous proportions. Even then, a united Free Alliance that we see now could have quashed the threat in its infancy. It is all one sad story of 'too little, too late'.

For the REAL story, and more info about the Necromancer's true identity, Prince would have to have turned downed Mask's happiest memory (and getting an erhu) to instead revisit his worst.

>>2385911
Lady Isabella is a mystery. It is unclear whether she is truly Fae or a mortal sorceress that achieved such levels of Power to the point where, within her realm (a perfect circle almost) she can tell pretty much anything from God to Daemon to bugger off. She -allows- the clans to live there. She leaves them alone and they don't cause trouble. She has historically had little patience for foreign matters, but clearly the Necromancer has reached a point where even she has permitted a token force of Highlanders to fight against him.

While she is all-powerful within her realm, it is unclear how far she can twist the strands of Power outside of its borders.

>>2385914
This is not in any order of power-levels.

>Lady Isabella, crazy power levels but minimal ground forces
>Isle of Mages, decent power levels entirely reliant on Free Alliance for force projection
>The Wild King, probably could hold his own against either the Necromancer or Lady Isabella, but his forces have been much diminished by the entry of the Skalds into the war.
>The Warlord, has some arcane protection from artifacts but would be crushed like a bug in person. Has the largest amount of ground forces

I'm not including straight up Gods and celestial beings like the Dark Father and others. And the southern archipelogo and sprawling metropolis surrounding the Rakasha Raj probably has the entire population of the Empire concentrated in a fifth of the space.

Other realms don't even register in the power play on the main continent.

>>2385930
If we were to fight the Necromancer mano-a-mano, how difficult of a fight would it be?

>Employer's name
Anton-...
At one point the Company worked for a minor lordling of Far Sut Rus called Antonius. This was some 200 years after Skarling Kingbreaker's death, and from the annal accounts Antonius appears to have been a mortal man that lived a happy and prosperous life after you completed the contract. The annalist is also curious why you would ask such an odd question.

>Skarling Kingbreaker
A man. A man's man. At one point in time the Neumunster Empire was a collection of a hundred petty kings, chiefs and princelings squabbling over territory you could lob a rock over. It was a dark time, where men who predominantly spoke one language were mired in pathetic power struggles that kept one another in the dirt even as inhuman monsters preyed on the very folk they were supposed to be protecting.

One day a man came to town, carrying a sword and a sack. He singe-handedly killed the guards between him and the local 'king'. The local priest, having seen this a few times before, presented the man who called himself Skarling the crown. Skarling took it and crushed the crown, putting the fragments in the plain sack he carried with him. Then he went on to the next town. This time behind him were a hardy fellows that figured he was on to something. And soon a few hundred. Then a few thousand. Within a few dead 'kings' Skarling Kingbreaker had himself an army. An army that believed. Kings started breaking their own crowns soon after that.

And then he did something even crazier. Something that set him apart He put down his bloodied sword and sack of broken crowns. He started building. Roads, schools, farm reforms, industry. Something to last. A future.

Every now and then he'd get a Wildborn surge, Skald raid or an evil sorcerer that needed putting down. So he'd pick up his blade and sack of broken crowns one more time to kick arse, no matter how old he got. He even hired the Black Company once or twice.

The Chevalisse straight up tried to canonize him as a Saint in his lifetime. He told them to fek off. He brought mankind out of an age of darkness. Prince may have very well played a crucial role in sending it straight back into the next one.

>>2385939
Please don't. Just... don't. Pre-heir handing over? Sure, that would have been interesting. Now though? Think how one-sided a straight up fight between the Black Company and their employers in the novel would normally go unless they were very clever.
>>
>>2385940
Shit.
>>
>>2385940
...goddamnit man, don't make me regret not breaking Mask. Poor undead doesn't deserve it. And this Skarling sounds like a total badass, but I wonder how he got so stronk in the first place.

Oh, and one last thing - I recall that both Prince and Bad Hand mentioned a terribad campaign in Far Sut Rus that involved starvation, cannibalism, Page #137 and other dark shit. Just what happened there?

Way Have you and otheres wanted to fight him?
>>
>>2386080
Your grammar caused me physical pain, but aside from that, i'd say it's a good question.

I'm a sucker for this kind of shit, despite this being a quest all about being an asshole mercenary. Do the good thing and all that.

But in reality it's mostly because I have a problem with authority figures and have no desire to follow any kind of orders, so the Necromancer doing that and also being an asshole at the same time is the perfect opportunity for my murderous intentions.
>>
>>2386098
So you'd have us suicide by attacking our former employer because of your issues with authority figures. That's a terrible idea. Two overarching ideologies reign in the Black Company:

1. Get paid to kill.
2. Survive.

Attacking the Necromancer grants neither.
>>

I would not, because i'm not a dumbass.

I'm just asking if it's a possibility.

We have more of a chance of convincing the Archmage to escape by joining the Black Company and searching out the Necromancers true name.

Where the fuck is he even. 2 days late.
>>
>>2386144
Yeah no. First off, I doubt the Archmage doesn't have some method to bugger off quickly thanks to Magik. Second, it's more likely that he wants to see us dead like the rest of the Free Alliance does.

A more realistic approach would be searching for any clue in the Archmage's quarters during our night raid, but it's a very dangerous task. Not to mention that we might find fek all there.
