Time for another new week!

Seems like we only just started the last one, haha. Guess the days all kinda blur when they're the same, yeah? Ah well.

No real news- should be on regular schedule for the foreseeable future, not sure who's going with the next shipment, though I've put my name in for it. Got a bit of a leg up, have a permanent badge for the site now, so who knows?

archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016

And that's all I've got for now! Let's get the week started.

++++

“She’s probably not wrong though.” You say, trying to keep it as emotionless as possible. It was fun, but you knew it’d never last- eventually, the matrons would start making sure their girls would get in close with you again. Happens all the time- at this point it’s really more a nuisance than anything else.

“She’s not?” Becc asks- you shake your head.

“Probably not. Stasya- sorry, the CAG, will limit them some, and she’s got some swing, but this is one of those things.”

She nods. “Ya know, I always kinda looked at it like Jess does. The Bishop name is a ticket to getting everything you want- I never figured it’d be this bad for you, too. They do this all the time?”

“All the time.” you respond with a nod. “Maman talked about having us disappear before, but it really wouldn’t have mattered.” You shrug. “You get used to it.”

“I guess you can get used to anything.” Becc says after a second.

You shrug. “It’s not that bad, some of the girls are actually really nice people. Made a few friends like that.”

“So they’re not all bitches?” She asks.

You shake your head. “Not all of them.” You say with a slight smile.

She shakes her head a second later. “Still, Kat’s convinced all of them are going to be top of their class queens and be perfect little miniature ice queens. Like having a half dozen of the captain running around. I’ve never seen her this stressed.”

[] Should we go see if we can reassure her some?
[] Just let her know it probably won’t be that bad. It’s not like we’re getting Moscow academy witches.

Never leave potential issues unchecked.
And don't even think about option 2.
Also, Ghost, how much does SW Skyrim differ from our Skyrim? Does Ace Combat exist in SW?
Is Toddposting a thing?

It's basically the same, the elder scrolls universe is effectively unchanged. toddposting is a thing. Ace combat doesn't exist as we know it, but similar games do.

[x] Should we go see if we can reassure her some?

For a second you consider quipping about getting witches from the infamous Moscow academy in with the squadron, but decide against it. You’ve never really seen the issue with them- they’re quiet, reasonably polite, and some of the few that don’t look at you like some sort of trophy, which is nice. You even still talk to one- Viktoria- though only at ‘offical’ functions- more specifically, when your mother is representing the bayou at some national coven gathering or other.

“Should we go see about reassuring her?” You ask instead. While you’re not sure what to make of the witches of the squadron other than your sister just yet, there’s no reason to let your CO work herself into a froth over something that probably isn’t going to be anywhere near as bad as she has it built up in her head to be.

Becc hesitates for a second before nodding, turning around to save her game. “You gonna change?” She asks- there’s, perhaps, a hint of hopefulness in her voice.

“Flight suit’s not good enough?” You ask, somewhat dubiously. While the Fenrir flight suit isn’t exactly what you’d call high class clothing, it’s comfortable and technically there’s no reg that says you can’t wear it- though normally, you’d switch into a conventional flight suit aboard or on the ground.

She shrugs. “It’s fine, I mean, it’s distinct, right? Ah whatever. Yeah, let’s go. She’s probably up on deck waiting to greet the jap commander.”

“Why would she be there?”

“Fellow witch. C’mon.” Becc responds, tossing the controller onto the deck in front of her seat, and stepping past you out into the passageway.

The two of you make your way through the ship without too much trouble- you get the usual salutes and greetings, of course, but nothing you don’t expect. Becc takes a side hatch out onto the walkway that runs just below the flight deck. The both of you look up as the thudding of an IJN MCH-101 grows to drown out the rest of the noise on deck.

“That’s our visitor.” Becc points out kind of superfluously. You nod.

You climb up on deck just as the rotors spool down and the doors open, disgorging a few IJA troopers and a couple IJN marines.

>>
“Sand island is a hardship post for them.” Becc explains. “They rotate in and out based on their own timetables, they don’t cycle whole units. The sand island garrison has been the same unit since the nineteen forties.” You nod, watching the handful of men greet their USMC counterparts and be led down belowdecks.

The last person to get off, though, you recognize. Sakamoto Kimiko.

“Wow.” Becc hisses on seeing her rank pins- She’s a three star, a Taisho. “What’s a three star doing there? Usually their CO is a colonel or major.”

She eyes you as she steps onto the deck, smiling briefly before turning to greet the Captain warmly. They served together during the war, you remember, even if only shortly. As they talk, you can see the captain shoot a glance your way- followed by Kat.

“Uh oh.” Becc says as Kimiko nods, then turns away from the captain and Kat and approaches. “Don’t do anything stupid, ok?”

“Hello Morgan.” Kimiko greets in Japanese. “A fine display of flying this morning.”

[x] Thank my flight lead, Aunt. He called the flight, I merely followed instructions.

You incline your head in a sort of half-bow. “Thank my flight lead, Aunt.” You say, looking back up into those curious red eyes of hers. “He called the signals, I merely followed instructions.”

“I shall have to meet him too, then, to thank him.” She says, looking back over her shoulder at Tabitha. “I suspect there are several people wishing to reminisce on old times. I want to speak with you again before we make port, though.”

And with that she spins on her heel and walks back to the captain, while Kat, dismissed now, heads over to join you and Becc.

“I didn’t know you spoke Japanese?” Becc says- half a statement, half a question.

“Polyglot.” You say. “Fluent in four, passable in about three others. Maman started me on languages early and it didn’t hurt dad’s household was bilingual too, but Kimiko is why I know Japanese.”

“And she’s a close personal friend?” She continues.

You shrug. “She’s close enough. I met her on a visit to Japan with dad. She kept Aunt Jessica and Aunt Katsumi from helping me get in too much trouble, started me on a couple martial arts. She and mom got pretty close after the war, too.”

Becc shakes her head. “I’m getting to be more and more glad I’m not you.” She says, after a minute. “I’m too lazy to want to do all that shit.”

Kat nods. “Too lazy to do a lot of things.”

Becc sighs. “Bite me, witch. We came up to talk to you.”

“Talk fast.” Kat says, half-turning to head for the island herself as the deck crew starts to get set up for fixed wing operations again. “Our reinforcements are already on the way, apparently. I need you two to go down to the Squadron berth and get it squared away for incoming witches.”

“Abut them.” Becc says. “Loverboy here told me they’re probably not the stuck-up marionette bitches you’re worried about.”

Kat looks at you, and you shrug. “Probably.” You say.

She shakes her head. “Judging by their transfer orders and service records i kinda doubt they aren’t- two of these girls have flawless, zero demerit eight year records at the academy.” She says.

“Zero?” Becc asks, sounding both impressed and intimidated.

“Not a single damn one. Marble models.” Kat confirms. “Look, whatever. It is what it is. I’ll feel better once you get the bay squared away and I can go talk to the CAG. Go get that done.”

Becc shrugs. “If you say so.”

“I do.” Kat affirms- then turns to walk off.

“Well, guess it’s you and me, loverboy.” Becc says, watching the commander walk off. You stand there for a second before she shrugs again. “Well, let’s go. I’ll go see if I can round up Will and Una, you go see if you can scare up Wells and your sister and Jess.”

You look at her for a second before she sighs. “Anastasia’s probably up with your mom and dad, yet. Wells too, I imagine, isn’t her mom up there? Jess- who the hell knows, go check marine country.” She says.

You nod.

“Ok, good. when you find them, send them down to help out. No need to escort them back. Once you’ve rounded them up, head on back yourself and we’ll get this shit knocked out. I’ll be in the squad bay.”

And, just like that, you’re alone.

Who do you want to go find first?

[] Anastasia and Kim- they’re probably still in the captain’s wardroom.
[] Jess first- You’re less sure where she is, and it’s going to take longer to find her.

Ok, votes called!

Probably just this one and one more after it, I think, then the weekly stuff. We *may* go down to a post every other day or something, see if I can get better quality to you guys that way, IDK yet. I'll announce it if we decide to go that way, but let me know what you think about doing that- especially knowing that my promises have been incredibly spotty on fulfillment lately to my great shame.

>>

Every other day would be cool if it lets you inject a little more flavor in all the characters, including Morgan, rather than having conversations start and end in 2-300 words. It'd offer the opportunity to have each character do things. If it just ends up being the same style of Morgan/others doing what was voted and then moving to another vote then I don't think there's much more quality to offer, y'know?
>>
[x] Jess first- You’re less sure where she is, and it’s going to take longer to find her.

After thinking for a second, you start to head towards marine country to look for Jess.

Marine country is different on each ship- on the Saratoga, it’s forward of bulkhead 30 on the deck below your own berth, and houses both the ship’s security element and any marine aviators aboard. Right now there’s just one squadron of marine ravens, so the place is kind of empty- then again, that’s true throughout the ship, since she’s only sailing at about 75% capacity. Were it wartime, she could embark another pair of conventional squadrons and another composite squadron without trouble, or another three conventional squadrons if it was really necessary.

Down here, though, you don’t see any navy blues- it’s all MARPAT and stares. You’re not exactly welcome up here, though that’s normal- marines aren’t exactly welcome outside of marine country unless they’re doing something specific.

You’re able to track her down after a few minutes- she’s in their lounge, shooting pool with a trio of marines, and it looks like running the table handily. You watch her for a minute before she looks up and starts. “Morgan.”

“Lieutenant commander O’hare sent me down to get you, ma’am” You say, returning the jarhead’s gaze levelly. “The commander had some things she wanted us to do before the new witches show up.”

Jess nods, putting her pool cue down on the table and straightening up. “Where did she want me to meet her?”

“The squadron berth ma’am.” You say. “She wanted me to go get Lieutenant Bishop and Ensign Wells as well.”

Jess nods. “Alright. Sorry guys, guess we’ll have to pick up some other time.” She says, walking past you into the passageway and out of line of sight of the door. The marines, you note, may not be happy to see her go, but they’re more than happy to watch her leave- every eye in there fixed firmly on her backside. You elect to not say anything about it- you’re all too familiar with what she must be feeling, though.
>>
You step in behind her, and almost run into her when she whips around, smiling. “Boy, you are a lifesaver, you know that?” She says with a smile. “I was losing bad in there.”

You nod, backing off slightly- she was more than a little too close, there. “Didn’t look like it.”

She laughs. “I was getting lucky that last game. Either that or they were letting me win a round so I’d bet more. Learned my lesson about playing with them, though.”

“Didn’t lose too much, I hope.” You say.

She shakes her head. “Nothing big, just about a hundred bucks. I can afford that for what it taught me.” She turns around again, walking down the passageway. “So the new witches are coming in today?”

“That’s what commander Piper said, yes.”

She nods. “Good, should be interesting to meet them. You’re going to go find your sister and Wells now?”

“Yes ma’am.”

She laughs. “You can knock it off with that stuff, they’re even less formal up here than we are. I’ll head on up to the squadron bay, you go get your sister.”

You nod, though the two of you do walk together for a while down the passageway before she splits off to head towards the squadron bay and you continue up into the spaces in the island.

You’re surprised to see Aunt Wells and Kim in the passageway as you climb the last ladderwell, hugging it out. You can just barely hear Kim crying from where you are, and neither of them has seen you yet.

[x] Let them have privacy- you know what this is about, more likely than not.

Orders are one thing, but discretion is the better part of it, and right now you know that Kim and her mom need their privacy. If it comes to it, you can handle the additional cleaning load yourself. You pivot on your heel, headed back down the ladderwell towards the squadron bay.

The bay itself isn’t exactly a hive of activity- while everyone else is there, any attempts at cleaning seem half-hearted at best- no one is exactly interested in having to clean a space that’s already well maintained enough. There’s a swab in the corner, sitting in a bucket of pinesol and water, and fresh linens stacked on the table, but other than that, there’s really no change. Even the racks are still mussed from having been slept in.

Becc’s back at the TV, though now she’s playing one of the flight arcade games- HAWX, you think, though all the ‘flight simulators’ look the same to you. while Jess lounges in her rack, reading a book. Billy and Una seem to be the only ones working- and even then, all they’re doing is putting the linens on the unused racks.

Kat walks in right behind you along with Anastasia- Kim isn’t with them, but you suspect you won’t be seeing her anytime soon anyway. She huffs and everyone looks up at her.

“Alright, nevermind.” She says, then points at you and Billy. “You two, come with me.”

Your element lead shrugs, then stands up motioning you to follow him into the passageway.

Kim stands out there waiting for you. “I need you two to get ready for a ferry flight to Japan as soon as you can launch.” She says.

Billy blinks, then looks over at you. “Excuse me Ma’am?”

“Don’t bother with the Ma’am shit, Will. This is serious. CINCPACFLT thinks the Chinese and North Koreans are up to something, massive troop and air movement on their side of the border. Chinese fast attack and missle boats putting to sea, the works. They want every wolf and witch in the fleet available.”

“What about you?” Billy asks.

“We’re on a pair of greyhounds right behind you.” She says. “We’ll be operating out of Shimane air base on the West coast till the Sara gets into the area. Questions?”

“More than a few.” Billy says. “But I’ll let Morg go first.”

So I want to preface this by saying I’m a fan of yours, Ghost. I’ve read SW ’89 twice now, and I’ll continue to read ’16 to the end, whether you implement some of these suggestions or not. I really like your work, and this is by no means an effort to diminish it – it’s one to, hopefully, improve it.

I want to pick apart this last post and go through what I think could improve the storytelling, especially with limited posting lately.

We’ll start with line one – you didn’t link back to the last post, which was made ~46 hours ago. You also did not expand on what Kim and her mother are doing, just that they need their privacy. This made me scroll back up to refresh what was going on. By leaving a link to the previous post or, even better, expanding on the ending of the last post with the start of this one, that could be avoided, offering a better day-to-day reading experience. You’ll notice much of this will revolve around expanding thoughts and scenes.

So we’ve learned that Kim has been talking to Merlin, and then decide to head back to cover for her cleaning duties. We discover that everyone else, barring Billy/Una who are doing a minimum of work, is slacking off. This is demonstrated in a minimum of words – no reactions are given when we walk in, no descriptions of the others beyond 5-6 words each. This was a chance to expand on the NPCs. What are they doing specifically? What’s their body language? Do they say anything? And there’s no reaction by Morgan beyond the pure facts – he has no inner voice, no character motivations beyond what we decide.

Kat and Anastasia then teleport in hot on our heels, though we never noticed them. We’re taken away with Billy in a single sentence. As a side note, Anastasia, going off of what was written, walks in with Kat and then stands still in the middle of the room. Kim’s in the hall, a mere three sentences after us assuming that she’d be occupied for a while – apparently, we could have just waited 15 seconds or so and she would’ve finished up with Merlin.

We’re then told the bare facts about our new assignment (note that you drag us out with Kat, then say that Kim’s standing there, then start the next dialogue with ‘she says’ which could be confusing), and Billy decides to let us talk first. Again, characterization via a conversation between Kat and Billy is avoided. Morgan has not said a word this whole post, and his thoughts have been nothing more than objective observations barring the first sentence. Kim has stood there silently, with no mention of body language or further reference to her until anon inevitably asks.
>>
>>2365161
>>2365388

Now the Morgan being largely a blank is a stylistic choice, but this far in I think the anons have talked about the basic personality enough that it can start being written by the QM. It also would allow you to offer internal motivations for Morgan.

But in the end, you had mentioned worries about doing ‘too little’ on a MWF schedule. I do believe that a 400 word post such as this one every other day would be too little, though at some point whatever you can offer is the right amount. But an expanded post that offers more in depth characterization, that flows a little better than this last one with its seeming teleportation and an abrupt tone shift, I think that would be more than palatable.

You’ve been the biggest critic of yourself in regards to writing time and post amounts, so I don’t need to touch on that. I do think that it’ll partially fix itself once we get past this awkward stage with the squadron.

So again, I really like both this quest and the last one, and I’ll be reading it to the end. But I wanted to offer a more in depth opinion/analysis, elaborate on some of my previous posts in other threads, and maybe put a pin in it all.

Super quest(s) man, I look forward to your post(s) daily(ish). It's the only reason I come to /qst/.

Reading it back, that sounds reasonable. I thought it was an iffy use of 'she', and that's a pretty easy mix-up. It makes the 'What's going on with Kim?' option make way more sense too.

[x] Should we expect action?

“Should we expect action?” You ask.

Kat shakes her head. “PACCOM doesn’t think so, they’re projecting at least forty eight hours before the Chinese or Norks are able to launch any kind of major strike like that, but the IJA and IJN are both on high alert. if there is anything, we’ll be redirected midair.” She says.

“Network?” Billy asks, and she nods.

“As soon as you’re airborne. There’s a general alert up for all of PACCOM, network is up and lit across the majority of the hemisphere. Tie on via the sara till you can get a Japanese link from an AWACS or jstar bird.”

“Weapons?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “Self defense load only, plus guns. Two sidewinders, two AMRAAMS, No one fifty twos. The captain wants to keep as much of her ordinance stocks aboard as possible.”

“What about our pods?” Billy asks, referring to the special weapons pods that can- and usually are- installed below the cockpit of the Fenrir.

“It’s twenty six hundred miles to Japan.” Kat responds. “Even with external tanks you’re going to be pushing it without a tank, and we can’t guarantee one right now.”

“With two tanks our range is almost three thousand miles one way, more if we go sub-orbital.” Billy says, eyes narrowing. “We’d be fine with the extra firepower, just in case.”

“Look, I’ve got a lot to do.” Kat responds, sounding like she’s out of patience. “You sort it out, ok? Official word is the captain wants to keep them aboard, just because of how difficult they are to move without a wolf to do it. But if you want to load them, I can’t stop you.”

He frowns. “Wait, how the hell are you getting there on a greyhound? They can only go like fourteen hundred miles, and can’t tank.”

“Midway island first, there’s a C-17 flying up from Wake. We’ll be a few hours behind you.” Kat responds. “Listen, we’re on a time budget here, so if that’s all?”

Billy looks over at you again.

So I've been thinking, guys, and I have bad news- or good news, as you may view it. Not sure.

With where I am right now regarding work and life and everything, it's pretty apparent I'm on the struggle bus to maintain both any kind of regularity to posting or quality- the anon here >>2365388 >>2365394 is 100% correct- there's far too many errors in far too short an update to warrant the extra time it took me, and I'm sorry and I'm going to push to fix that kind of thing, since it's not far to you or me to deliver that kind of content and expect it to be ok.

As a result, I'm going to go from the regular schedule we've had, with one post a day to something less regular. Not quite sure yet if that'll mean a thread every other week, or just more infrequent updates still, or maybe a return to a thread every week with Q&A during the week yet, but I'm anxious to figure something out. I'd give up sleep or food or whatever if I thought it'd mean I could do better for you guys, but at this point I'm not so sure it would.

I'll keep you guys up to speed and I'd certainly welcome input on what you guys think may help- I kicked around the idea of a hiatus till I could sort life out a bit better, but I know, especially in circles close to planefag, how that's a dirty word, haha. Just let me know what you guys think, and what we can work out.

I'm sorry again, guys, but I'm hoping we can figure this out and go back to having fun again.

I'd imagine it be easier to focus on writing quality updates doing that instead of spreading a thread out over a week. Only draw back would potentially be fewer updates but quality is better than quantity.

>>2367375

I have to agree with >>2367502 for Quality over Quantity updates. Perhaps with more infrequent updates rather than a few updates every day.

>[X] No, I’m good.

>>2367375
I would also rather have fewer updates if it meaning longer posts, better characterization and fewer filler questions. 2-3 updates per week perhaps, depending on your schedule? As for the Q&A, I would prefer you focused on the writing and not wasted your time on something that is half irrelevant to the story, and half would be better delivered within the story itself.

Wolves use an Aardvark-style ejection pod, right?

I don't know if we need a new thread. This on is still on page one, though it'll likely slip to the 3rd or so once autosage hits.

[x] No, I’m good.

You shake your head. “No questions, ma’am.”

She nods. “Good. We’ll be reporting to the local IJAAF commander when we get there, but expect to see them as soon as you land. Keep in mind there’s an air defense alert up over their entire ADIZ, expect a look-over once you enter their territorial airspace.”

Billy nods.

“And keep in mind the north koreans have threatened to wipe Japan off the map with ‘nuclear fire’, and even though that’s a totally bullshit threat, no one is taking it as a joke, so the japs may be slightly touchy. Just follow instructions till you can report to their base commander or I get there, ok?”

“Nuclear fire?” Billy asks. “The fuck?”

Kat shrugs. “Apparently they forgot no one has those anymore on planet. Still, the japs aren’t playing with a threat like that, so they’re a little twitchy. You’re in a USN fighter, with USN transponders and paint, but you know what I mean.”

Billy nods. Ever since Stalin's wall- the so-called ‘uranium curtain’ went up in eastern Europe at the end of the last war, the world’s reacted with horror at the power of nuclear weapons. While some nations- notably the US and the Russian federation- still maintain their own small stockpiles, the vast majority of the world’s remaining warheads were put in orbit on UNEDF ARMD platforms, out of reach of any terrestrial conflict. While the threat is outrageous- only two nations have that kind of arsenal- there’s a terror of nukes being used again, and the threat has understandably shaken the Japanese.

“Laroux, Kim’s flying in with you. She had a bit of a meltdown after you left, but she’s going to keep flying with you for the time being.” Kat says, shifting her attention to you. “Juat take it easy with her. We’re going to try and get you another operator out here before anything starts, but witches willing to get plugged are pretty rare.” She shrugs. “She said she’d keep flying until we had a replacement, but she wants out as soon as we do.”
>>
“Will she be staying with the crew?” Billy asks, a second before you do.

Kat nods. “She’ll be staying aboard with them, working on the wolves and the strikers. Since she’s flight trained, she can assist with maintenance test flights if we need any, and because she’s plugged, she can still do work with the wolves’ computers.”

“Is the cruise extended?” Billy asks after she answers. Kat shrugs.

“No word yet. If it isn’t, don’t expect to go home. they’ll either crossdeck us or base us out of Japan. wolves and witches don’t go home till it’s over.” She says.

He nods. “sounds about right.”

“That’s it, then. Go get loaded up and in the air.” She says, walking past and into the squadron berth.

“Let’s go.” Will directs you, turning to head down the corridor at a brisk pace.

Una joins you in the locker room attached to life support- the atmosphere is kind of tense. It strikes you that you may be flying into combat- as unlikely as it is, there’s the possibility the chinese and koreans will make a move while you’re inflight.

Billy and Una leave just as Kim enters- her eyes puffy and red. She looks at you for a second before looking down at the deck. “I’m sorry.”

You turn to face her, squatting down to get in her line of sight, and favor her with a small smile.

“Hey.” You say, getting her to look up. Your father may have gone for physical comfort- a hug, or something- but that’s not really you. “You do what’s right by you, Kim. Nothing to be sorry for, oui?”

She sniffs- her eyes are watery and red-rimmed, but she nods. “I-I guess so. I-it’s just that everyone always talks about mom and uncle frank, and I always kind of felt-” She trails off. “I-I mean, I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but-”

You nod. “I know that exact feeling.”

“I-i guess you would. How do you deal with it all the time?” She asks, looking you in the eyes, finally. “I-I just- I mean, I can’t-”

[x] We are who we are- not who our parents were.

“We are who we are. Not who our parents were.” You say, maybe a touch too forcefully. She blinks, but nods.

“but-”

You shake your head. “But nothing. We’re ourselves, not repeats of them.”

“But you’re a pilot-”

You nod. “Because I wanted to be.” You state, standing up. Her eyes follow you up, lingering perhaps a little long on your undershirt-clad torso. You shrug the rest of the way into the Fenrir’s flight suit. “I could have just as easily been a commando or a football player or anything else.”

“So you’re not mad at me?” She asks.

“Of course not.” You respond, closing the zipper and reaching in your locker for your personal equipment- a survival knife and a tomahawk you’ve had forever. Your PDW rides in the underside of your ejection seat- and is stored with the witch’s weapons anyway. “You can’t try and be what our parents were, Kim.”

She nods, slowly. “I- that’s what everyone else says, too.”

“So don’t try.” You say. “Be who you are- we can still work together, even if you aren’t flying.”

“You mean that?”

You nod. “The commander already said you were staying with the ground crew here, right?”

She nods again.

“Then we’ll still be working together.” You say. “Go get ready.”

She nods, stopping to give you a brief hug. “Thanks, Morgan.”

You nod as a return and head over to the other side of the shop, drawing your helmet and life support gear as she changes. The tech helping you looks at the hatchet. “That’s a pretty nice one, sir.” He says, helping you get into the survival vest and get it hooked in properly. “My brother’s a metalworker, does some blacksmithing. Is that a custom job?”

His name was Davenport, it's a shame what happened to his dad though.

I imagine that we make Spetznaz look like amateurs in comparison.

[x] Yeah- it was a gift from a friend when he found out you’d graduated from Annapolis.

You nod. “Gift from a friend for my graduation.” You say, turning it over in your hands to let the other man see the work on it.

Clark- the man that made it for you- was, at times, almost a surrogate grandfather for you. The old man had been a metalworker for ages, longer than even your mother had been alive. He’d lost a brother in southeast Asia in the 60s, then his son in 1989. Yet, for that, he remained fiercely patriotic, and had presented the hatchet to you as soon as you came home from Annapolis.

He’d been tearing up when he handed it to you- He’d long held that you were basically family, afterall, and he was perhaps more than a little proud. The hatchet itself is probably worth a good couple hundred dollars, maybe more- typically, the man makes custom blades that run several hundred dollars apiece. You don’t bother mentioning that though- there’s really no point in bragging about it’s value.

Instead you slip it in it’s leather holster, attached to your vest on the right side so that the handle clears your leg to the side as you sit. The knife goes in a pocket on your thigh, while the small aid kit and survival kit go in their pouches on the front of the vest.

You’re just getting your helmet when Kim walks over, the witch’s flight suit clinging to her like a second skin. Her survival gear is contained in the escape pod- no vest for her- so all she has to draw is her helmet. She flips it over in her hands a couple times before looking up at you.

She doesn’t say anything to you, though, and after a second of looking at you- searching for something, maybe- she heads out.

“Have a good flight, sir.” The tech says, and you nod to him on your way out as an answer. Kim’s a little bit ahead of you on the way up, her cheap slippers making a curious slapping noise on the deck.

She pauses suddenly, letting you catch up easily. “What’s happening with our effects?”

You shrug. “Probably staying aboard. this is just a temporary thing.”

“So what are we going to wear while we’re there?”

You shrug again. “We’ll probably just have to stop by the clothing shop and draw a set of utilities.”

She nods. “I guess. do you know where we’ll be staying?”

“No.” You shake your head. “Probably get quarters when we get there.”

She doesn’t respond, instead walking up on deck in front of you.

There’s more activity up here- a pair of wyverns are already boxed up for a cat launch, while Billy and Una are mounting their plane right now, and yours is on it’s way up the elevator now, the tails just starting to poke up past the deck. By the time you’re able to walk across to it, it’s level with the deck and being towed off the elevator.

Preflight and startup is quick- the fighter had only just barely been returned to the hangar deck from your last flight when word came down to have it refueled and ready to fly again.

You’re only just barely up and plugged in when Una calls across. “You two ready to go? we’re next on the cats.” She says.

“Everything’s online, we’re ready to go.” Kim responds.

You’d have responded, but there’s a sudden sense of foreboding that invades your thoughts- you look up, and one of the Jet’s cameras catches Aunt Sakamoto standing on the bridge wing, watching you. She nods once and speaks- knowing you’ll hear her.

“You Aunt Jessica said she looks forward to seeing you.” She says, her voice carrying perfectly fine through the mic up by the nosewheel of the fighter.

It’s the scariest thing you think you’ve heard in a while.

So, is fronk in either one of them? We'll need help protecting kim from Jess.

Sounds like Jess hasn't lost any of her energy. Be afraid.

Jess is the "Psychotic little sister" trope IIRC.

She's also a Jarhead.
>>
>>2376936
Jess has calmed down quite a bit, but because she's married to another woman, doesn't have any biological kids.

She tends to, uh... dote? Dote is a good word. she tends to dote on her nieces and nephew. It can be a bit overwhelming.
>>
>>2379114
But will she flying tackle Fronk?
>>
>>2379125

It sounds like she's going to tackle /us/ and clutch us to her bosom and decry how she has missed us, probably with full double cheek kissing.

If we're standing too close to Ana at the time we'll probably be crushed together.
>>
>>2379232
Sounds like a good opportunity to put our sneaksy training to good use as soon as we get the chance. Gotta practice a little here and there to keep the rust off, right?
>>
>>2379232
Clearly we must sacrifice Fronk first to buy time to escape.
>>
>>2379232
We need to use our natural talent in SERE to escape
>>2376880
We need to have a chat with Kim during the flight, see if its the spooky Barons, us or the figtah which is causing issues.
