Dearest Helen, such a simple soul. You do welcome her company in most circumstances, but you have always been one to prefer to work alone.

You enter the door in front of you and arrive in the foyer. Helen darts ahead. You grab her attention with a quick tap on her shadow.

"Hark. Our quarry stalks near."

She stops. You hear footsteps. Ascending. The castle's sanguine resident must be retreating up the staircase ahead.

"The fiend lurks above."

"Then what're we waitin' for? Let's get 'im!"

"Heel, Helen. We must first seek purchase in an advantageous position if we would hope to prevail."

There are a number of routes you could take for this approach but alas, you have only until daybreak to complete your task and thus simply hiding and waiting where you are is not a tempting option. The more time-sensitive albeit more aggressive option would be to stalk behind your mark, striking when it would expect least. Another option is to instead divert your attentions to gathering knowledge on the vampire, so you may confront it with some foreknowledge of its capabilities.

Given our time constraints, it's unlikely we'll get a good preview of the enemy's abilities. So an ambush is most likely to succeed. Since we have a gun, and our student is a demon, maybe attack the vampire in a tight space, limiting it's probable supernatural mobility? Then shoot the fucker, having our demon meatshield draw it's attention long enough for us to get a good shot.

You ascend the staircase in silent pursuit of the vampire. Following your mark takes you through dark halls and unlit corridors, and you take great care not to lose Helen in the darkness. Eventually, the vampire stops before a grand window through which the moon's blessed luminescence shines. This is the optimal moment to make your ambush.

You gesture for Helen to engage.

"Got it, boss!"

"What was th--"

She pounces. Her superior demonic might allows her to quickly restrain the vampire. You step out from your cover and prepare to fire.

"Fiend of the night, thy time hath come many aeons ago. Thou shall cease poaching upon the world of the living and return to the eternal slumber from which thee hath been roused!"

The fiend raises his voice in protest.

"Wait! Surely a woman of class such as yourself would not execute someone before hearing what he has to say?"

The gall! Would this vile monster dare to attempt to coax you to spare it?

"Shoot 'im already!"

You lower your gun.

"I... I cannot. Helen, unhand him."

With some hesitation, she releases the gentleman from her stranglehold. He cackles with debonair confidence.

"Now tell that one to get lost."

"Excuse me?"

"Helen, get lost."

"What's going on?"

"I shall not repeat myself! Get thee gone!"

"Alright, alright! Yeesh..."

Helen makes her exit. The gentleman vampire turns away to continue stargazing.

You back away from the gentleman vampire. He appears to be a tortured soul, ruminating on a troubled existence as he stares moonward. However, this alluring aura of mystery keeps you from leaving the vampire alone in his silence.

"O decorous vampire, wherefore dost thou cling to thy immortal flesh?"

Your words startle him out of his trance.

"Huh? What are you talking about?"

"I am merely expressing concern as obliged by the foul bewitchment placed upon mineself."

"And you seem to be aware of my magic. Very strange... What are you, anyway? Some kind of vampire hunter?"

"I am but a mere humble servant of the Lady of the Final Goodnight, on Her behest to slay the vampire that resides within this very castle. I have hit an impasse, as thy geas that prevents me from assuming a hostile position disallows me to complete mine task."

"Lady of the Final Goodnight? Never heard of her. And what's with your eyes?"

"Eyes are windows to the soul, of which I have naught."

"Hmm. And that demon servant of yours?"

"Helen. It did so tear at mine heart to raise my voice at her on your command. Thy enchantment cannot gain purchase upon her, but she is required to defer to my words."

He nods with sated curiosity.

"This has been a fine conversation, madame..."

"Nil."

"...Madame Nil, but I'm beginning to feel peckish. Fetch me a meal."

The beast hungers.
