“Chassis integrity at 10%. Enemy titan shields have recharged. Isaac, ejection advised."

The display in front of you fades to the hard metal hatch of your Titan. Heat was beginning to bleed through into the cockpit, and it wasn’t going to be long before it turned into a melting pot of molten metal and radiation. With a quick couple of flicks, you prime the reactor for self destruct, say your last goodbyes to the chassis that had served your for eight months straight, and pulled the ejector lever.

As you and your former seat are flung down the corridor of the ship, you look turn to see the collapsed chassis of your titan, Shard. In a heartbeat, you see the white, black, and indigo strips of Shard’s hunched over chassis, riddled with bullet holes and stained with explosion marks. Soon, the white light fills the hallway around, you, as you land, skidding on your knees past a bulkhead. With a quick slash of your data knife, the bulkhead slamming shut, you hear the dull thud of explosion and shrapnel thudding against the door.

"Thanks Shard, for not launching me into the roof."

Your name is Isaac Graham, Indigo to your squadmates. This was meant to be a simple snatch and grab for supplies and weapons, part of a big plan you had later, but it had turned to shit when APEX appeared, blowing half the fleet you were raiding to pieces and separating your squad across the different ships.

"Now, I'm titanless, stranded... and weaponless..." you mumble, as you grab fruitlessly at the empty gun holster on your back. As you watch the IMC troopers and Militia soldiers firing at each other in the adjacent room, you decide to...

>Drop in behind an IMC soldier, take them out and take their guns.
>Drop in behind a Militia soldier, take them out and take their guns.

Killing IMC. Writing
>>
IMC has been plaguing the outer rim for generations at this point. Your home world, Canopus III, was one of the most beautiful planets in the outer rim, with lush forests, plains, and greenery. You remember the day you hijacked your first Titan, joining Rainbow squadron, and watching from orbit as IMC ships bombarded the towns and cities that you once called home.

It felt natural when you landed behind the closest, most isolated IMC rifleman, slit his throat and took his guns. You even felt yourself unconsciously nod to the Militia soldiers across the firefight as you scurried away with your newly found R-201 assault rifle, Hammond P2016 pistol, ammunition, and a set of firestars.

It doesn’t take long for the riflemen to realise you are there, as your jump pack assists you up onto catwalk that you had used to drop behind the soldier formation. A few stray shots fly overhead or underfoot as you slide, jump, and wall run, threatening to end your story. You could feel your heart racing as you flipped over the side railing, doming three IMC soldiers, and catching two more with shots to the chest. It was almost as if time stopped around you when you landed, then slid across the metal floor into cover, picking your way towards the door across the battlefield. Carefully, you lined up the sights of your rifle on an eighth IMC grunt’s head, pulled the trigger and watched as his head popped in a shower of blood and brain matter. When you make it to the door, you watch silently as the Militia mop up the remains of the IMC formation, before you continue on.

It doesn’t take you long before you find yourself an unoccupied info panel. With the ship map, although probably mostly incorrect now that it was being bombarded, downloaded, you mark out your course to the Titan bay, silently hoping that luck was on your side.

Locking the doors behind you, you slowly traipse through the bay, silently admiring the room. Luck was on your side, with four Titans, sitting unused in their frames. You remember your first hijack all to well. With a quick slash and stab of your data knife, you were set to begin a titan link with any of the four.

As you begin deciding, you hear the sound of bending metal and gun fire from behind you, the large blast doors to the bay beginning to spark and crumple. Judging how it's halfway up the 8 metre door, you suspect it's an enemy titan.

"Why can't I catch a break?" you mumble as you climb into the...

Vanguard, you decide, as you climb in, flicking the hatch close switch without looking at it. The front line for the reconnaissance fleets of the Militia, the Monarchs of the battlefield to the IMC. Adaptable, and varied, each one is unique, to some degree.

As you sit down, your hand instinctively reaches back behind the seat, before tugging hard on the seat positioning lever. As you silently rage to the heavens about how they always have the seat too far forward, the bright lights of the pilot hatch flare up, scanning you. It stings for a bit as your brain is scanned, copied and uploaded to the Titan's database, but after the short flood of memories, you find yourself ready.

"Designation RK-3267. Titan link established. Running protocol list."
With a start, you feel the controls around you light up, finally connecting you to the rest of your second body. "Protocol 1 - Link with pilot. Protocol already established. Protocol 2 - Uphold the Mission. Mission status unknown, will require pilot input..."

As you grabbed the nearest titan gun to you, the blast door bursts open, an enemy titan staring down at you, as it draws it weapon. "Protocol 3 - Protect the pilot. Activating salvo core."

With that, you watch as the two missile racks on your titan's back slide forward. In half a second, the enemy titan standing before you had fired two 40mm cannon shots into your shields. Your titan had fired 10 missiles into its front hatch and had 10 more to go. As the last remaining scraps clattered to the floor around you, slumped into your seat, sweat beads starting to run down your forehead.

"Mind if I call you RK?" you ask, sliding back up, setting up your controls.
>>
It was good to finally get back into a titan again. Especially if APEX was running around the ship. Escape was going to be *that* much easier.

You had grabbed yourself a Tone loadout. It wasn't going to be great with the number of corridors, and explosions already happening, but it's better than running around with a sword.

"Multiple hostiles detected. Hostile titan engaged with Militia forces." Soon enough, in the red and white paint of the APEX, you watch as the titan crushes a squad of Militia soldiers under foot. The display in front of you crackles a bit, as an ugly mug of a pilot faces watches you. "An unmarked titan. Must be one of the credit jockeys the Blisk mentioned. Guess it's payday."

With the dashes you make your way into cover, firing your 40mm cannon over and over again at the titan as you slide between the support columns of the room. Every time he fired his thermite launcher at you, you slide swiftly out the way.

The battle seemed done for you as you continued to circle strafe. As you entered the third circle, you hear the sound of satchel charges and arc grenades going off, followed by your display fizzling, and a violent shake as multiple rockets, titan lasers and grenade launchers collide into your Titan. "I did mention there were multiple hostiles, didn't I?" you hear when your display reactivates, your Titan autonomously moving your into cover as you focus on firing.

As you get behind a corner, you watch as a canister lands at your feet, gas starting to pour out of it. With a last minute flick of a switch, your deployable barrier activates to stop the thermite grenade that was going to ignite the hotspot.

With a pulse, the room lights up, multiple soldiers and the enemy titan signature lighting up in your display. "What are you going to do now?" you hear as you contemplate.

Titan Combat Focus. Writing.
>>
With the satisfying sound of your knuckles cracking, followed by the rush of adrenaline, you grip the controls, count to three, and begin your assault. Five shots into the ground is enough to send the soldiers sprawled. 35 tonnes of metal confirms the kills. 3 shots into the front hatch of the enemy titan, followed by a banked shot that circles around the support pillar to collide right into its back, followed by three more shots. Your shield comes up just in time as it activates its firewall, the flames fizzling upon the shield as you dash beside it, emptying three more rounds into its side, before sending it crashing to the ground with a solid punch to the frontal hatch. As you approach, you fire shots into the arm joints, severing them. As you approach the Titan, you silently shake your head as you flick the rocket salvo yet again, right into the front hatch. "Payday indeed."

Hoping out of your Titan to secure any batteries that might have survived, you hear your comms come to life. It was Orange, Nishat Alfarsi. Daredevil, rogue, funny man, trouble seeker. (Not) to your surprise, he was in a pickle, again.

"Fucking hell... Leave me alone. Oh, Indigo, you're alive. Great date wasn't it... OH FU- wait... ok, uh... I'm over by... the hangers. Need help!..."

With squinted eyes, you carefully climb back into RK.

"Mission objective as specified by you was to secure the rest of Rainbow squadron and evacuate the ship."

As you arrive, you watch as two Titans in combat. The first, a small orange Stryder class, was zipping around trying everything it could at surviving. The other was a heavily armoured Ogre Class, carefully spraying shots from its predator cannon. As you approach, you wonder why Nishat always tries to go against the odds, then you remember, he likes a "challenge".

At this point, you couldn't be stuffed to try any cool trick involving you and Orange working together to take him down. That last one you fought was an Scorch class Ogre, and this was just a Legion class Ogre. As much as you wanted to say they were completely different, you couldn't. It had the same weak points, same tendency to be slow and tanky, but shot bullets instead of fire. With two shots to the front hatch, you had its attention. With another you had lock on. With a flick of five switches, and a button, twenty missiles went flying down the corridor right into its face.

Surprisingly, it was still standing after that. The front hatch was open, the pilot was barely able to sit up straight in their seat and one of the arms had been blown off, but it was standing. You didn't care when it started revving the gun, or when its shots harmlessly pinged off your Titan hull. As you got in range, you could hear the pilot trying to act cool and do throw you off your game, but you seriously didn't have time to bother with such a bad pilot. As the pilot spoke his first words to you, to emptied the rest of your titan gun into the cockpit.

"Vanguard. Nice. What happened to Shard?" you hear as the Stryder limps towards you, gripping you Titan's shoulder for support. With a soft hiss, both your hatch and his open up. "Thanks for the save, and nice... uh... work..." He says as he looks down at the blown open Titan Chassis.

"Where's Blue?" he asks, clearly out of the loop. As you think back, you last saw Blue heading towards the bridge. But that was just before APEX crashed the party, and when the plan turned to ashes.
With a brief look, Nishat pats your Titan's back in comfort, before saying, "She'll be fine."

With a worried look, you look around, carefully eyeing the scans that RK is feeding to your helmet. "How're we getting off?" You ask. You knew the answer from the moment you stepped into the hangar but you asked anyway.

"Powering up that transport, flying it away from the ship and getting picked up by the others. Unless your titan has a vacuum seal, then we can just jump into space."

"Just get me some titan batteries and I'll get us out." Nishat says, as he shoos you away,

"Mission updated. Secure energy cells."

(That's all I can handle for today. More tomorrow. Probably.)

Titan batteries, as self descriptive as they were, aren't all that limited to charging the massive metal combat forms that ruled the battlefield. Many of them are used to charge single terminals and consoles throughout the ship, or even power sections of the ship in large arrays. Sadly, finding a viable Titan battery usually means heading to one of two distinct places. The bridge/hub/command section, or engineering, and as much as you would like to go into the bowels of the ship, you're pretty sure that most of it is a burning mess.

Taking the fastest route to the bridge section, RK stops after a while, carefully scanning the surroundings. Unexpectedly, the front hatch opens, and your seat set back to the original setting, before you moved it back.

"Routes blocked by large rubble, inaccessible by Titans. Indigo is advised to proceed on foot, lest they wish to get blown up with the ship."

You didn't need to hear all of it, to know what was going on. You're used to it, but you always have felt disappointed when disembarking.

"Indigo is advised to make head way now, unless they wish to get thrown."

It was almost guaranteed that combat is going to occur. With that in mind, strategy moving forward?

Agility Win. Writing

As much as power and stealth were helpful, especially a ship full of soldiers who were effective all fighting against you, speed was what what you needed. The speed to find the batteries, secure them, bring them back and get off this ship before it explodes or something.

With that in mind, you race along the walls and corridors, sliding on the ground to keep momentum, riding the walls to boost yourself with your jump pack.

"RK, any news from Orange and Blue?" you ask between elongated breaths. You knew the answer, but you asked anyway. There was no harm, at least, that you knew of, and you needed to build that Titan-Pilot link further than just three rules.

"None. I have returned back to the hanger as protection. Multiple groups have already tried to commandeer the transport that Orange is working on, and according to Orange enemy comms are starting to call for larger sieges. As much as I am a weapon of war, I will not be able to withstand multiple sieges, even with Orange's help. Please hurry with your objectives."

Almost as soon as the connection terminates, a heavy crack alerts you to enemies, as you flip off the wall. A second later and your leg would have been blown off by the heavy sniper round that was not embedded in the wall. The crackling sensation rolls over you as you slide behind a pillar, another shot mere centimetres from your helmet. "I'd advise you to stand down pilot, but I won't. It's more fun when the prey's in pain."

With a practiced motion, you draw the carbine from you back, sliding behind yet another pillar, two more shots flying and missing. You could see them now, the light red of their pilot helmet divulging their catwalk position. Large panels embedded in ground provided you cover up to and past the catwalk, but the only route up was the far back wall. More panels hung from the roof, slowly twisting. It was the most direct route, but the most exposed, especially if you chose the panels. Finally, a small checkpoint room at the right stood firm despite the damage to the room. The roof, leading directly to the catwalk. The path, longer and more windy, with two large sections that expose you. They're probably looking at that path the most. It was your choice, and the clock is ticking.

It takes you a moment to consider the options. As much as the boxes provided good cover, the time it took to get through, behind, and around to the sniper was too long. Time was of the essence. In terms of the roof top, one rule that you learnt very early on as a pilot. Never follow the flow of battle, make your own. Don't let the enemy do what they want, so change the rules to suit your needs. One look at the panels and a little bit of preplanning and you were ready. So, with one final breath, you steady yourself and rush from your pillar.

To your surprise, the first shots are almost on point, barely deflecting off your armour, shields and helmet as you begin your ascent. Bouncing off a different pillar, you rocket yourself up into the air high enough to catch the lower half of a panel, ready to charge forward. A shot pinging off the other side of the panel almost throws you off the panel, back to the ground, but a reactionary burst from your jump pack gets you behind a panel blocking line of sight.

Weaving between the panels was difficult, especially with a sniper facing you down, but every so often, you would be surprised. A few shots of you gun, keeping him in cover, and an unlucky shot from the sniper could spin a panel in the the perfect spot for you to continue.

With three panels left till you and him were face to face, you could begin to see the sloppiness of this guy's marksmanship begin to show. He began emptying mag after mag into spots you had long since been, with you slowly depleting his shields, bit by bit. As you run your hand along the final panel to steady yourself, you stare at each other for a second. You're pretty sure you heard his gun click empty, as you spray shots into his chest. In true pilot fashion, you hear a sickening crack sounding from his helmet, and possibly his skull, as you drive your foot in his face. Landing with a short skid, you turn to face him, reload your carbine, before running off shaking your head.

As you arrive at the battery array that you were looking for, you take a moment to rest yourself. Locking the doors and leaning up against one of the walls, you take a moment to calm yourself.

"So far, so good Isaac. Good job with the sniper." you mutter between breaths, surprisingly breathless, despite the months of cardio-respiratory you always do.

As you look up, you notice something that you recognise all too well. Against the nearby console was a crouched figure, barely visible by the soft blurry outline of its form. As you stare at it, you draw your pistol from instinct.

The blur fades, and the shimmer as the person drops out of cloak causes you to blink for a second, before focusing. Slowly approaching you, you see your squad member, Blue.

With hesitation, you lower your gun, half expecting the possible hologram to disappear and for three or four APEX pilots to jump out.

"I'm glad you're alive." She says, gently wrapping her arms around you.

"You could have hid better than standing in the open with your cloak." you remark, as you hug back. "But I'm glad to see you're alive as well."

For a moment, the feeling of safety sinks into you. No threat of death, or capture, or explosive decompression. As you open your eyes, again, you feel Blue's hand collide into your helmet, leaving you clutching your head. As you begin to ask for an explanation, you can't help but laugh at Blue's ridiculous pose, her head turned away in such a melodramatic fashion.

"That was for scaring half to death. Don't do that... ever... again."

--

"Well, at least Nishat hasn't died yet." you remark as you pull the last remaining battery from the array, plugging it into the charge divertor. "We don't have long though. My new Titan's going to protect him, but I don't know about multiple sieges." You finish, pulling the battery that was being filled by the others onto you back.

As Blue slips another full battery onto her back, you hear the sparking sounds of firestars, or at least thermite charges.

In a heartbeat, the doors flew open, riflemen charging in. In a second, the first few collapsed to the floor, a bullet in their heads. As you draw your own carbine, you watch as Blue gracefully lines up her fifth shot, as she flies over their heads. As you race after her, you hear the sound of her Kraber sniper rifle fire, three targets falling as she pulls the slide back on her Kraber. "I thought you said we had to hurry." She says over your comms, as you follow after her.

As you follow after her, you quickly consult your map. As much as you would like to follow that route you took, it was probably swarming with riflemen all jumping from losing a "good" sniper. There was the direct route that took you probably over a major battle ground, you think. Finally there was the "long way around". which as secluded and mostly unknown, you don't like maintenance shafts, or wasting time in a burning ship. But the turn offs for each of the three routes were coming up, and you had to decide soon.

It was a no-brainer at this point. You needed to get of this ship, as quickly as possible. So what if you run into some riflemen along the way. You're a pilot, and a good one at that. They shouldn't be too hard...

... is what you thought before you reached the room. Much like your first room, it was filled to the brim with riflemen and spectres, and reapers, and enemy Titans. Pausing for a moment to both cry on the inside, and taking in the state of the battle, you can't help but feel like you made the wrong choice.

"They're busy with each other. Just get through." you hear, as Blue launches herself onto one of the nearby walls, doming a few soldiers that dare to look at the new arrivals.

The first wave of soldiers to face you are a group of Militia riflemen, the shouts for reinforcements ruining your chance to sneak by. As Blue slides by, emptying another round into three soldiers, you carefully follow after her, keeping in her wake, and mopping up and left over troops. As you slide kick a soldier out of the way, you hear the loud barking sound of a nearby soldier, his Mastiff shotgun catching your shoulder as you slide behind a metal railing.

For a moment, you think you might go down, the burning sensation of hot lead in your arm almost clouding your mind. With your free hand, you carefully place shots with your pistol, almost dragging yourself across the raised platform that bordered the battlefield. With a short stinging feeling, feeling in your arm returns, the pain subsiding, as your suit injects its supply of regenerative medicines into you. With a few short breaths, you check your vitals one more time, before continuing on.

The IMC front that was barring the your exit to the Hangar was strong. You could see the waves of spectres and riflemen all lined up at a blockade, crudely assembled, but holding the rushing Militia at bay. You watch as Blue effortlessly stare down the few soldiers in front of her, quickly bouncing off the wall, snapping the neck of one of the soldiers with a whistle, before continuing on. You, further back and nearing the blockade watch as the hole closes, soldier after soldier closing the gap.

With a bit of trigonometric maths, timing and skill, you underhand one of your grenades above you as you barely slide through a crack in the blockade. The sounds of an explosion followed by a shower of gore, followed by the container that above you shifting to reveal the ceiling told you that it was a good grenade.

Setting yourself back into a run, you watch as the IMC wall slowly collapse as the Militia rapidly pry open the gap in the defence. As you chase after Blue, you wonder if you had decided something for the future.

A minute later, you were at the hangar bay, RK crushing a soldier between his fingers, and Orange mowing down the last of an IMC soldier. "What took you so long?" He shouts as he flips his empty magazine onto the floor, slotting another. "Felt like its been days since you left."

With no time to lose, you quickly slot the battery into the convenient port in the console, the lights blinking alive. "Blue's getting the ship ready. Just hold them off, while I get the doors open."

Almost as if he had jinxed the mission, the next wave of soldiers entered, an enemy Titan barreling forward towards RK and the ship.

"Pilot Indigo, I suggest you board."

With a short run up, you fling yourself across over to RK. As he scoops you up, and places you into his cockpit, you feel the same flaring feeling, this time, a DMR round piercing through into your thigh.

As the doors close, and you flick the controls over to manual, you wince. As you open fire on the approaching Titan, with RK's 40mm cannon, you can't help but wonder what marksman's training did these riflemen get?

Despite the pain, you carry on, carefully placing your shots into the Titan. In semi-graceful dance of Titan dashes, metal fists, and cannon fire, you hear the sound of RK's fist punch through the front hatch, and close around the pilot inside.

"Hull integrity at 45%. Ship ready for departure. Pilot Indigo is recommended to leave. Right now."

With a few more departing shots, you slide your controls back, dashing RK backwards. With a few clicks, RK was sliding backwards into the cargo hold of the transport, Nishat piggy backing on RK's foot as the doors of the transport close. After a three second period, you watch as the windows around a bright blue, as the FTL engine powers up. With a violent shutter, you feel your body squish against the seat of your cockpit, before everything sinks back to normal.

Through your comms, you hear Blue cheering, and Nishat collapsing RK's leg. As you begin to black out from the blood loss from your leg, you heave a heavy sigh, before letting out a painful cry.

"Mission complete. New objective rendezvous with Rainbow squadron."

Thank you for taking part in TFMQ, (even if I took too long). Hope to see you next time.

Thanks for running, Pancakes. Even if it was disjointed.
