You stand firm, your arms clasped behind you in the small of your back. If Siegfried was worried he didn’t show it, the mountain of a man standing tall beside you. Hauptmann however, leaned forward over the table his voice on the edge of raised.

“You’re using us as line breakers now? The Americans are still causing hell behind our lines, we can’t just leave them to destroy our towns out there!”

“Need I remind you Sturmtruppen’s express purpose is to break lines and sow chaos in trenches. Besides that Edward I outrank you, your protests are noted and dismissed.” Abelard didn’t even look up as he responded, still studying the map.

“Our numbers are too few to succeed in a charge! The entire French military is on our doorstep and you expect a small unit of Sturmtruppen to break a line effectively?!”

“No, I expect you to break it or die trying. Besides, at least half of the men we requested have managed to make it to the lines. The fresh bodies will be more than enough for a full scale line charge. We’ll get those twenty meters and then some. Your two boys here however, heroic as they are, will be the upstanding moral fiber to lead that charge. First over the wall, first into the dirt.”

The more you listen, the more the punishment sounds similar to the firing line you avoided. Edward and Abelard continue to discuss back and forth, the former becoming angrier and angrier. You glance about the room, trying to focus on something else. Not only is the table covered in maps, hundreds of them cover the walls. Old ones haven’t even been removed, just covered over with the new. By the deep yellow underneath you’d even venture to say that some of the parchments here are from the start of the war. You wonder then, how many times discussions like this had been had around the very same table. The room smelled of stale smoke and gunpowder, with the underlying hint of coffee. It’d have been a welcome reprieve, the warmth that radiated from the walls comforting had you not been in the situation you were.

Edward interrupted your thoughts, slamming his hands into the table.

“My unit has had some of the most successful operations of this damned war in our time. We’ve already lost men holding off a force a hundred times our size, and now you tell me we’re going into the true meat grinder to have our lives cast away over twenty meters of ground.”

Cont.
>>
For the first time in the conversation Abelard looked up, the sharp jaw and icey eyes of an officer who didn’t care meeting the righteous fury of one who did.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. You’ll either succeed as decorated heroes, or this legacy you’ve tried to build will end and we’ll see that maybe you aren’t as great as you claim. Prep your men Hauptmann Edward, and begin movement up to the line.”

“Damn you Abelard! I’ll be damned if my men are going to die for such a pointless endeavor. High Command will hear about this.”

“Indeed they will, and with the twenty meters of ground your lives will take back they’ll be quite pleased. Your presence is no longer needed, go prep your unit. Now.”

Hauptmann turns, his greatcoat spinning at the bottom as he storms from the table. Siegfried and yourself follow, grateful to leave the room behind. You watch your commanding officer, his barely contained rage as he leads you through the twisting tunnels breaking free as he slams the door you entered through. If the guards on either side cared or noticed they didn’t show it, their faces still except for the rain that flowed down their face.

“I’m sorry you two, I tried. Know that you won’t be dying alone however, we’ll soon be after you. He’ll get his twenty fucking meters and then some, and they’ll remember our men for it.”

The walk back through the trenches is wet, the clouds overhead having finally burst. The rain tingles across any exposed skin, hundreds of years of smoke and gunfire having raised the acidity to an incredible point. The footprints your group leave fill up quickly, a mottled brown liquid slurry that consumes the entire trench line. Before long you’re walking in water up to your ankles, thankful for the high boots you were issued.

You finally arrive at the entrance to your barracks, and before you can pull open the door Edward stands in front of it.

“I’m sorry you two. I really am. You’ve damn well earned your place in this unit, just as much as any other. If this does or doesn’t turn out, just know I would have never wished this on you.”

How do you respond?

“Sir, thank you. Siegfried and I likely would have died in that damned trench were it not for you and the others. Been a damn honor to fight alongside you all. At the end of the day however, as Sturmtruppen this is our duty. None of this is easy, but better they send us than someone who would get it wrong.”

Edward studies you carefully, a small smile on his face.

“Said like a soldier who knows just how to kiss ass. You’re a good one Jäger, you’d have gone a damn distance were it not for this. It really has been an honor.”

“You two are so damned depressing. It’s not over until you stop breathing, and it’ll take a lot more than a weak, catacomb raised, French bastard to drop me no matter how many rounds they fire. We’ll crush this damned line, and when they ask how it happened they can look to us. Start being Sturmtruppen and not whiny breeders.”

Siegfried’s words stun the two of you, the giant man standing with his arms crossed looking as serious as he can. Edward’s laugh starts slowly, a light chuckle that builds to a booming laugh that you can’t help but join in on.

“What, what’s so funny about it? What the hell?!”

You struggle to stop yourself, resting a hand on Siegfried’s shoulder above you to steady your feet. Between bursts of laughter, Edward manages to speak.

“True Sturmtruppen you are Siegfried. That’s the spirit we needed.” Edward begins laughing again, whatever else he said lost to another fit.

“Go to hell the both of you! It’s not a joke!”

Siegfried’s indignation sends you further spiraling, and before long the door is opened by Dok to check on the raucous laughter.

“Have I missed something?”

Your response?

“No Dok, just getting ready to kill some French. Siegfried here is helping us get ready for it.”

“The French? Change of orders I assume?”

Edward seemed to had gotten himself under control, looking over to Dok as he spoke. You respected the officer greatly, a man who could both remain under control and care for his troops.

“Yes. We’re being deployed to the front, as line breakers. Granted it’s what we do best, but do you remember the last time?”

Dok stood in silence for a moment, before removing his cap and running his hands through his hair.

“The last time we functioned as that we lost over nine tenths of the men. With who we have left a charge will be a death sentence for our boys. We can’t break a line, much less break and hold it. The entire French army is here!”

In the distance, the shelling of guns you had tuned out since above ground changed. Gone were the explosions of shells impacting the ground, in their place a dull thud as thousands of rounds impacted without detonating. It stayed this way for some time, the rumble of incessant bombardment thrumming in your chest. You couldn’t help but glance over the parapet, a dull cloud of deep red gas growing on the French side.

“That’s a new color. Wonder what hell the Defense Ministry cooked up this time.” Dok spoke as a man who was casually interested, taken briefly from his line of thought before resuming his conversation with Edward.

Siegfried joined you, watching in a disgusted wonder as the gas choked out the horizon. The rain had stopped, the thick clouds hanging along the ground and up nearly twenty feet into the sky, undisturbed by the windless day.

“I know I can’t change it. Damned if I like it though.” Dok sighed as he finished, stepping aside.

Hauptmann turned to the two of you.

“You’ve got about an hour, before we need to be back here and ready up. Don’t waste it.”

Siegfried and you salute, the clenched fist over your heart returned by the officer. You glance into the door behind him, the unit of men you’d fought by having the news broken to them by Dok. On the table, Nixie looked up with indignation.

Look for machine guns and mortars, grenades and special weapons. We can blunt the attack then push them off with firepower, or soften them up before storming their trench.

You look towards the market, the weight of your revolver reminding you that you are still in need of your ammunition. The merchant who had taken your single round said that he would try to find a replacement or more ammunition for you. In case you ended up fighting something more unsavory than another man you thought it’d be best to go and gather what you could.

You stepped farther from the barracks, moving through the ankle deep mud and water. To your left, the cloud of red grows darker and more foreboding as the shelling continues to add to the number of already spent gas rounds. It doesn’t look like any you had ever heard of before, and more importantly none of the French are screaming or yelling as soldiers usually would when under gas.

You pass by No Man’s Land bar, still chained shut and now guarded. The line for the clinic hasn’t moved much, some of the men lying in the mud with a stillness that only death can bring. The ground underfoot turns a darker red hear, the blood of hundreds of men mixing in with the rain. The water froths and stirs now, millions of tiny rotworms churning and eating as much they can. You try to ignore the sensation of walking through it.

Ahead of you the trench line opens up, the Market sitting as you remember. You head to the far tent, though the table is gone and the tent flap closed tight. You look around, a sign stating closed having fallen into the mud.

“Sir? It’s the soldier from earlier. We helped with the men who were extorting the merchants here. I gave you a round of ammunition that you said you’d pull apart and try to make more of.”

The only response is the dull thrumming of artillery still hitting the ground. The bottom of the tent flap moves for a brief moment, a light breeze picking it up enough for you to see the dancing shadows of a lantern lit inside. You look around at the other stalls, still open and bustling. You needed the ammunition, and with what little time you had to prepare before moving to the front you couldn’t afford to waste this trip.

You take a step forward, pulling open the tent flap and ducking under it in one fluid motion. The air inside is impossibly cold, shards of ice creeping over the glass face of the lantern that sits on the desk. The merchant is face down, a disassembled round in front of him. The silver tip shines brilliantly as the crystalline structure over the glass distorts the lantern flame, and you struggle not to stare at the round as the light hits it. You take a step forward, a sinking feeling in your stomach as your foot lifts from the icy tendrils that had formed at the bottom of your boots, shattering them in a broken melody.

What should be gunpowder is an brilliant turquoise pile of tiny rocks. You don’t quite understand where they came from, or what it is really. Beneath the merchant’s blue face, a sheet of paper with what looks to be fresh ink.

You pick up the paper, the ice that held it to the table breaking away in tiny shards. In the distance, you hear the wail of a mourning woman. The scrawl is fast and ragged, clearly written in haste.

“The silver is the purest I’ve ever seen, clearly worth ten times its weight. As if it had been pulled from deep in the earth, of the finest seam. Whatever magick it is coats it I can’t say, the substance unknown to me. The striking part, the powder. Where gunpowder should be is something I can only describe as powdered souls. What magic and industry could create such a thing I can’t begin to imagine. A truly unique ammunition, far beyond anything I could duplicate. If I can, I’ll try to get the other off the man, sell it at a ridiculous price.”

You ignore the end, his intentions clearly meaningless now, the frozen icicle of blood hanging from his lips a testament to his expiration. The tent flap moves behind you, and you turn and draw the Luger in the same motion. Nothing. The flap hangs open, into an infinite abyss. A black so dark as to make pitch the shade in the morning sun. By the edge of your vision, a wisp of raven black. You turn, the Luger held outwards towards a target that you never catch. A hand alights on your right shoulder, clenching just forceful enough to send a cold spike into the skin.

You hear and feel it then. The cool air that caresses your ears. The breath of a horror from beyond understanding.

You turn, the hand guiding you softly more as one would a lover than an enemy. The familiar sight of one of The Choir greets you, the candle held close to her bosom flickering far too slow to be of this time. Her hair drapes over her face, the murderous gaze of two sapphires shining forth from under the black strands. You can’t see it, but you feel as though the pallid skin is stretched into a smile.

You face it, staring into certain annihilation of your own accord. She withdraws her hand, moving it to hold the candle with her other.

“Do you wish for more? For more to die by your hand in a manner so horrible it rips the afterlife from them?”

“I don’t have time for this. I need to help win this war, a victory for The Empire. You just wish to claim more souls.”

The Banshee tilts her head ever so slightly, the grin never fading and the eyes never stopping the soul searching that bored into you. In a movement far too slow, she reached out and took the dead merchant by the back of his head. Her nails dug deep into the skin, tiny globs of coagulated blood falling to the ground and freezing amongst the ice. You realized then she was singing, not in a traditional sense. A high wail that you heard in the back of your mind, a wail that rose and fell without pause.

It was sudden then, that she bashed the Merchant’s head onto the desk. Once, twice, thrice, over and over. Each time the cracking noise grew louder and louder, until his brains were scattered over the desk. She let loose the broken skull, reaching her hand into the pinkish gray slop. The pale white was stained red, a brilliant contrast that your eyes followed with each movement.

“Each of these is made from the life of one, a life for a life you see. In the end we get ours and then another. How much is yours worth I ask. How many are you willing to trade to see it through and come out unchanged?” Every word was forced on icey air, a hoarse speech that caressed the base of your skull. Between each syllable hundreds of layers of promises and threats, wailed out in a symphony of agony that drilled into you.

Your hand moved of its own accord, unfolding in a plea for salvation. The candle fell to the ground, the light extinguished in a thin hiss as the ice crawled over the object. The world turned black, the only visible thing the monster before you. The stained hand opened over yours, dropping a number of rounds into your palm.

“Nine in your tavern, and one more here. Ten lives to take ten more. This war will go on until we’ve taken you all as the maidens of the reaper. You cannot change this, and in the end we shall claim you as well.”

You feel a tension in your chest, a weight pressing down on your chest that wraps around your lungs and forces the air away from you. Slowly, you’re lowered onto your back with reverence and motherly care.

You lie there, trying to gasp for air that won’t come. The feeling wraps you tight, your eyes bulging as the banshee lowers herself next to you. You struggle, looking to the creature that lies next to you in a perverse mockery of the way a woman would lie by your side. Her hair had fallen over her face, the smile peeking out every so slightly.

In a moment, the feeling is gone as soon as it came. The inky black beyond the tent is replaced with the outside that you had expected to see. The ice that coated everything is gone, as is the corpse of the merchant. You look about the tent, searching for some sign that it had been real. Where the ammunition had sat on the table, is instead a pile of matted black hair, dripping a deep red onto the floor.

You make your exit quickly, venturing back into the marketplace. The red cloud is high enough that you can see it without looking over the parapet. The guns have resumed their usual bombardment of explosive shells, the explosions becoming part of the background noise once more. You begin the walk back to the unit, no more ready for the upcoming battle than you were before, though your revolver now has eleven rounds to use.

You arrive at the barracks, opening the door to a scene of unusually high spirits. The men have cleaned their gear, weapons disassembled and reassembled in pristine fighting condition. Nixie is on the table, a few men gathered around to hold a conversation with the Fairy that nibbles on half a cracker. Dok and Hauptmann stand in the far left corner, poring over a map of the front while pointing out various options.

You see Siegfried, flexing his metal arm and trying all manner of motions with it. The men act as if nothing is out of the ordinary, readying themselves for just another action. The feeling of dismay hangs in the air however, as the men grapple with the specter of oncoming doom. You check your gear quickly, the new rifle being in fantastic condition. You reload the revolver, the freshly made ammo still cold to the touch, smeared a deep crimson.

You look at the bar of dark chocolate in your hand, then up to Nixie, then to Siegfried. The two of them have saved you countless times, and their company has helped you so much you doubt you could put it into words. You step forward towards the table with Nixie. Upon your arrival, the other soldiers glance amongst each other, saying their goodbyes to the small Fae among joking laughs and the term Lover Boy.

You ignore the lighthearted jests, sitting to face the little creature.

“Hi Dietrich! I’m glad I don’t need to hide anymore, they’ve all been so kind. Maybe not everyone in this war is bad...I thought you were the exception honestly.”

You can’t help but crack a smile, the Fae’s effect on morale quite evident. Dok and Hauptmann seemed to be quite right in that the men needed something to fight for. It was much easier when it was in front of you, lofty goals of country and and land were easily lost in the mire of war. You return your thoughts to the present, pulling out the chocolate and snapping the bar in half. You push it forward towards Nixie, who looks at it quizzically.

“What’s this? It smells incredible but...what is it?”

“Chocolate, you should try some. It’s very sweet and rich. Nothing else like it.”

Nixie breaks off what you would consider no more than crumbs, before nibbling it inquisitively. A smile spreads across her face as a newfound light dances in her eyes in time with the taste of the sweet. She quickly begins to eat the candy, taking a moment to smile up at you with a mouthful of the food.

“I know it’s just food but, thank you Nixie, truly. I owe you for saving me so much.”

You reach out, patting her on the head. Her hair flows under your hand like corn silk, a beautifully soft black that you can’t help but pinch the softness between your fingers. Nixie reaches up with a single hand, her eyes closed with a soft smile. You can’t help but think of how adorable she is, and smile back.

You remove your hand, looking down at the fairy with the dopey look.

“H-Hey why did you stop!?”

You can’t help but laugh, the cute fairy growing on you even more.

“Eat your chocolate Nixie. I have one more thing to do.”

Nixie looks up at you, a mixed expression on her face.

“You aren’t going to stay with me?”

“I’ll be back if I can Nixie. I have a few more things to do before we start marching. Enjoy your chocolate okay?”

Nixie nods, clearly crestfallen though you try not to take note of that. You stand, patting her on the head once more as you leave which elicits a soft sigh from the fairy. You move towards Siegfried, who sits with his shotgun disassembled on the oil stained rag that sits in front of him.

“Dietrich! You end up finding your ammunition? Did you see if we kept up that strange gas attack on the French?”

You try to dodge the question of the ammo, focusing instead on the gas.

“They shelled them for some time, nearly another hour before normal ammunition was used again. Strange though, there weren’t any screams from the French, nor calls among our own for gas masks if the wind blew it back.”

Siegfried nods, a contemplative look on his face.

“Odd indeed. Oh well, I’m sure HQ used it for some reason or another. They aren’t one to do things without purpose or effect.”

You nod in agreement, nonchalantly taking out the remaining half bar of chocolate and handing it to Siegfried. He stops his cleaning, staring at the foil wrapped sweet.

“You gotta be kidding me, chocolate?! I haven’t had it since the start of school when I exceeded the class on physical training. Oh man Jäger you shouldn’t have.”

Siegfried takes the chocolate in one of his grease stained hands, biting as much as he can off the bar with a grin. He places his free hand on your shoulder, patting you a few times.

“I knew saving you was the right choice. Fucking chocolate, what a comrade.”

You laugh, sitting next to him as he eats.

“You didn’t tell me though, did you find your ammo? I remember you handing that round over to the merchant, I assume you went to look for it. What’s so special about that gun anyways, you keep playing around with it.”

How do you answer him?

“It was a hassle, but I got it alright. Only a few, but still some.”

Siegfried nods, apparently satisfied at your answer though you get the feeling he still wants to know. He sits, eating the chocolate at a quick pace.

“Well, I guess it is what it is. Thank you again for this man, I’m gonna finish it quick and finish cleaning the gun.”

You nod, standing and moving aside to an open space you can sharpen your shovel with the new whetstone. The dull grinding noise reverberates through your ears and vibrates along the shovel handle. The razor’s edge shines in the dim light, and you feel confident that the weapon won’t let you down when needed.

“Alright everyone, wrap it up. We’re moving in five.” Hauptmann’s voice booms through the room, the commanding tone hiding the concern he had showed earlier.

The men gather their things, the light hearted feeling leaving the room to be replaced with a grim acceptance and determination.

You sit at the table in front of Nixie, the Fae still nibbling on chocolate with a dopey smile. You run the whetstone over your shovel again. The familiar sound fills the air again, as you try to make the edge as best it can get. Nixie looks up at you, choosing to let the silence hold.

You push the shovel in the cover for the head that hangs off your vest. Glancing over your rig, you make count of what you have with you. Twelve magazines at twenty rounds each, your shovel freshly sharpened, the Luger with two magazines, and your revolver with eleven rounds. Your grenade bag however is empty.

You ready to find more, but Hauptmann doesn’t give you the chance.

“Alright men, time to make the long walk. Gather up and let’s go.”

The men stand, having been ready to march from Hauptmann’s first order. One by one the unit falls in line, ready to go forward into the maw of hell. The group steps into the trench, the mud and blood of previous occupants gathering around the ankles of them all with each step towards the front.

The journey to the front would only be a few minutes by train, but by march it looked to be nearly an hour. You passed countless dirt covered and empty eyed faces, men clutching their rifles tight as they sheltered under small alcoves, the constant bombardment throwing dirt and water into the sky. The rain of earth on your helmet was constant, as was the constant fear that one of the shells would find you and the line. Nixie was in your pocket, a familiar position that you were overjoyed to have her in again.

The walls on either side were of rotted wood, some of it looking as though it had been in place since the start of the war. You struggled not to trip on the countless bones and limbs underfoot, the very ground a graveyard of the unnamed. The line was silent, with each step forward the impending death of a charge growing closer and closer to the unit.

You lost count of the lines, of how many rows and rows branching off to old fronts, backup trenches, logistics, and countless other purposes the network in the earth fulfilled. During one such glance you saw it again. The woman in white, her candle flickering and held close. You tried to ignore it, but after the first it seemed she was always there. At the end of a trenchline, huddled in with soldiers, or underneath the rain of artillery.

You lost track of time, just choosing to stare at your feet as the inevitable inched closer and closer. You have ten minutes before your each the front, is there anything you do?

You move to the front of the line, going past the other members of the unit who look past you and towards the hell ahead. The sound of gunfire has become a constant, a rapid staccato mixed in with the constant thumping of heavy artillery. It was a stark contrast to the back line you had been in, the men here looking constantly on edge as they peeked around. You passed more and more dead, their corpses sprawled out along the bottom of the trench.

You finally reached the front, keeping time next to Hauptmann. The officer looked his age now, far more than when you first met him. Gone was the confident pose, replaced with hunched shoulders and the wild eyes of a survivor as he kept the rifle close to his chest at a low ready.

“Sir, I was wondering if you’d tell me about the last time you spoke of.”

Hauptmann Edward looked at you with a look that struggled to get across the absolute horror the man had lived through.

“Sure Jäger. I think it’d be best you know what you’re getting in to. Last time we were on the front was near nine months ago. The unit was a lot bigger than, nearly a full hundred men strong. A lot of the soldiers under me were fresh, boys who’d never seen actual combat outside training or the rare skirmish with Ghuls. We got picked to break a line further down this section actually. We lost nearly a fourth just in the charge. When we finally got to the line and started doing our job, the French counter pushed, leaving us stranded. Fought our way out through one of the French tunnels, and by that time two thirds of those that hadn’t died in the initial push were gone. We were showered in medals but it never replaced those we lost. Command evidently saw fit to do so as well, we never got any bodies to bolster the line.”

Hauptmann is silent for a moment, a look of rage flitting over his visage.

“We’ll show them again then, just why we earned those medals. For those who died before and those who will today. I’ll be damned if this unit vanishes into the mud. Get yourself ready Jäger. We’re nearly to hell.”

You let your pace slow, falling back to the position you had occupied in the line as you were told. It took only a few moments before you reached the line, the march changing to a sprint as the unit dashed up to the wooden wall. Rounds flew over your head, a constant angry tearing noise that felt as though it would drive you to the end of the earth. The shower of mud was constant, artillery never relenting. To either side of you as far as you could see the front was lined with tens of thousands of men. Positioned every few feet were officers, a pistol on one hand and battered whistles in the other.

They looked at you as if you were cattle, hunched up against the wooden walls with only up to go.

Last chance for talking to any character or actions. This is it before we’re up and over.

You look to Siegfried, the man who had become your closest friend and ally over the time you’d spent above ground. You weren’t surprised then to see him looking at you as well, a wild smile stuck onto him.

“You’re a damn good man Dietrich. Let’s hope we both make it out of this one eh? I’ll expect you to pull me out of hell again just like every other time.”

You find his mood infectious, and can’t help the wolfish grin you reciprocate with as you nod. Siegfried looks to his shotgun, checking over the mechanism and ammo. You watch as his prosthetic moves just oddly enough to be deemed unnatural. It’s mesmerizing however, how the thing spins and whirls. Hopefully it eliminated the disadvantage Siegfried had been at, you can’t imagine that it’d be easy in the trenches on the other side.

The officer standing in front of you makes it impossible to talk to Nixie in the open, and as such limits you to whispering down into your pocket. What do you say to her?

You lean down to Nixie, lifting the pocket and whispering down to the tiny Fae.

“Thank you all your help so far Nixie, I’m glad to have you back. If we somehow get separated, try to get back to the unit barracks or find Dok.”

Nixie nods, her eyes as wide as saucers. As soon as you finish speaking she clamps her hands back over her ears, trying to shut out the oppressive assault of noise. You can feel her try to wrap your arms around you, though it does nothing more than a light pressure around the seams of your pocket.

You close the pocket as the officer strides past you, patting Hauptmann on the shoulder. Your unit leader nods, looking down the line as he steps away from the wall.

“Alright gentlemen, it looks like it’s that time again. Up and over, through one hell and into another. We’ve got a twenty meter gap to cross, and then straight into trenches we go. Our unit is supposed to push down to their munition pile. If we can hit that, we can cut off most of the men on this section and get a hell of a lot more than twenty meters back. We’ve done this before, and we were decorated as heroes for it. We’ll do it again, and be decorated as legends. Each and every single one of you are equal to a thousand of those damned French, and it’ll show today. Push in, be merciless, watch for the man beside you, and kill as many of the bastards as we can. Mark grid 242811 on your map, that’s the expected dump and where we’ll meet up. Let’s show everyone here the Sturmtruppen way, boots to the ground, grenades to the sky, guns forward, and never back!”

The men around him let out a cheer, whether Sturmtruppen or not, and you feel compelled to join in. Around you, the sound of bolts being pulled back and rounds chambered momentarily mixes with the sounds of gunfire and explosives. Then just as sudden as it was, it stops, along with everything else. The artillery falls silent, the earth under your feet finally still. Stunned, the French stop firing as the unthinkable happened at the barrage falling silent. Only then do the whistles sound, a shrill call to death as the german men are gestured to move up and over the wall by threat of a gun.

You grasp the top of the breastworks, trying to pull yourself and your equipment up into the hail of gunfire that has resumed. The edges of your vision dim, the No Man’s Land of tangled wire, burned hulks, and corpses stretching before you for far longer than what looks like twenty meters.

You:

[1] Sprint as fast as you can

[2] Try to move from cover to cover

[3] Fire at the machine gun position you can see ahead and left

Once again, answers here should be chosen carefully and discussed. Your very life can be at stake.

You hold your trigger finger, imagining the gun swiveling and cutting you in half at the waist if you returned fire. Instead you will yourself forward, even as rounds find themselves in the ground in front of you or whizz over your shoulders. You feel as though you’re fighting against yourself, trying as best you can to force your body to move into the hail of steel.

You keep running, moving faster than you ever thought you could as you push through the wire and muck. For a moment you realize the ground is no longer under you as you fall forward into a stinking hole filled to the brim with rotten water and gore. You struggle to orient yourself in the fetid mire, finally breaking through the scum on the surface and pulling yourself up and back to the mud. You can feel worms in your clothes and hair, though you thankfully didn’t lose anything in the fall. You pick yourself back up, sprinting forward the last few meters towards the trench.

You:

[1] Leap in, land on a soldier with shovel in hand

You try to pick up as much speed as you can, leaping off the edge of the trench and down. As you hit the ground you pull your bayonet from your left boot, gripping it against the grip of your rifle. The man in front of you is surprised at your sudden appearance, and rather than let him react you jab the sharpened metal point forward and into his throat. You watch the red rivulets run down the blade as you push harder, throwing your weight behind the push. You can feel the metal dig into the bone of his spinal cord, before sliding off and out the back of his neck.

“Merde! Tirer!”

You hear the readying of rifles behind you as the men finally find themselves. You yank out the bayonet, spinning and dropping to one knee as you let off a burst from your AKG. The 9.8mm rounds smash into and through your targets, red spatters painting the wood behind them with bits of tissue. The men fall, clutching at wounds.

You glance around you. Ahead is the machine gun nest you had spotted, to your right is the direction of the munitions dump. Behind is yet more French, occupied by more fighting down the line. What do you do?

Could Americans capture Wendigo, and either drop them into enemy trenches via aircraft or have them caged and use artillery shells filled with Pheromones/stuff that they find absolutely irresistible on enemy lines?

Just some spouting stupid ideas really.

No I know what a Wendigo is I live in Michigan, I just didn't understand that line of thought anon. Wendigo's are the furthest from the action right now I wouldn't worry about them.

You reach down to the two men who groan and cry on the ground. Quickly, you try to search their uniforms. One of them thankfully, was carrying a grenade. You wrap your hands around the rock like explosive. Unlike the german weapons this one seemed to be strictly mechanical rather than the spirit bombs the empire used. You dropped the explosive in your bag and continued to move forward.

The constant chatter of machine gun fire grew louder, shouts in a foreign language just barely audible under the noise. You keep yourself pressed against the wooden breastworks to your left, your shoulder pressed tight. With each few feet you make it forward, a few more germans make it into the trench, though none that you can recognize. You try to make your way through the melee, lashing out with your bayonet at any fleshy target you can reach.

You come up to the machine gun nest, and ready your grenade.

shit i just got high at a friends house and im up to this part it looks like there has been heaps of action
>>
You pull the pin on the grenade in your hand, and bend around the corner to toss it into the concrete bunker. You can hear it clack as it bounces twice, French screams of surprise cut short by the massive blast that shakes the foundations of the building. You spin, pushing forward into the smoke with your weapon raised and bayonet in hand. Your eyes sting, the harsh cloud nearly forcing you to cough.

The smoke clears, giving you a view of the inside. The machine gun is ruined, though the barrel still smokes. The action is peppered with holes, shrapnel having ripped the gun near in half. As for the men, they share a fate similar. Most of them are spattered on the walls, chunks of limbs and meat scattered about the floor along with broken weapons and bloodstained uniforms. A few droplets of blood fall from the ceiling, staining your left shoulder. You turn, ready to advance back outside.

A french soldier blocks your way, his uniform stained red from rounds that must have entered through his torso. The bayonet that killed him is still stuck in his throat, a weak trickle of blood running down the length. His eyes are clouded over, an off white color that sets you on edge as he stumbles forward. Red foam bubbles at the corner of his mouth, an odd off color that surely isn’t blood.

What do you do?

You shoulder your AKG98, depressing the trigger to the back. You can feel the bolt cycle, the round tearing through the air and then the Frenchman’s face. Red bile and foam spray through the air, mixed with the remainder of his head as he staggers towards you a few steps before collapsing in a heap. You watch the blood sluggishly flow from the remains of the dead man’s cranium, a half clotted congealed mess that stains your boots.

You didn’t kill him the first time, but the bayonet still embedded in his windpipe surely did him. How was it then, that he had rose to take up arms against you, even if it was just with his fists. You stepped forward carefully, walking past the cadaver as the last few nervous signals set the body twitching. Red foam and gore covered the wall as you passed, returning back to the rain filled trench. All around you bodies shifted, both of French and German infantry. You watch as men whose shoulder blades were cleaved to their hearts took shuddering breaths, heaving up an orange liquid that spattered and hissed in contact with the ground.

You stepped carefully, eyeing the turn towards the munitions dump.

You:

[1] Move carefully and watch the bodies

[2] Sprint past

You keep your rifle shouldered, watching each of the twitching corpses as you carefully venture closer to exit towards the munitions dump. You pass countless bodies that twitch and writhe as if an electric current ran through their muscles. You fix the bayonet to your rifle, keeping it pointed at whichever is closest. You’re nearly halfway to the exit when one of them staggers up towards you.

You spin the barrel around its outstretched arms and jab the bayonet through the eye socket. A milky white fluid runs along your blade, mixing to a pink as blood trickles from the wound. The freshly killed Frenchman falls backwards, slipping off your bayonet and collapsing again against the wall. You take a step backwards, and happen to glance back. The near twenty corpses you had passed were standing, bumping against one another as they staggered towards you.

You:

[1] Fire into the crowd while walking backwards

[2] Try to make it to the exit and keep going

You turn around and sprint towards the curve, your boots pounding in the mud as you sprint past the cadavers that rise around you. Foam and bile run from their lips, mixing in with the ankle deep water and blood. You keep moving, holding your weapon close and trying not to let it catch on any of the creatures. One of them rises in front of you, and you bodily check it with your rifle, sending the body spinning to the ground with the crack of shattering ribs.

You finally turn, staring down the long hall filled with walking corpses. Some German, some French. Limbs hang from deep cuts, intestines hang from eviscerated stomachs. Some of them even have gun shot wounds directly through their heart. Your momentum halts, mud spattering around your ankles. You can hear the shuffle of the approaching cadavers from behind, and watch as the ones in front of you stumble forward.

What do you do?

You look towards the shambling dead to your front, the countless lethal wounds having done nothing to halt them from rising again to continue fighting the war. Friend and foe had been forgotten, grey and blue uniforms mixed together in a gory bunch that struggled forward in their hatred of life. You grasped at the edges of the breastworks, mud slipping around your fingers as you struggled to lift yourself over the near eight foot wall.

The creatures closed in on either side, slowly taking up the slack in distance between you as you struggled harder and harder. You jumped, bodily hefting yourself against the wood as your boots struggled to gain purchase.

Do you:

[1] Keep struggling to climb

[2] Drop back down

You’re losing time, after one more action the converging creatures will be upon you

You pull as hard as you can, finally lifting yourself up to have your shoulders level with the wood. Your arms burn, the gear you’re carrying helping to weigh you down quite heavily. You glance around either way as you continue to inch your way up. Rounds whizz over your head, and all around you gunshots sound from the trenches. Artillery had resumed firing, massive explosions digging holes into the earth ten feet deep and farther.

The rain of mud on your head is incessant, stinking water and churned earth showering you and the trench as you roll over the breastworks. You struggle to catch your breath, the exertion having driven the energy from your very bones. Nixie pops up from your pocket, looking at you concerned,

“Jäger we can’t stay up here! We’ll get shelled to bits!”

As if to illustrate her point one of the massive siege howitzers lands far too close for comfort, a mere few hundred meters away. The plume of earth and fire climbs almost to the clouds, the concussion buffeting you and threatening to throw you back down into the trench.

What do you do?

Why don't we just camp at the munitions dump with a few of our buddies and mow down as many of these zombies as we can, then when they thin out, we blow the dump and head back to our lines?

Ammo dump is gonna have alot of ammo, grenades and other goodies.

I'd say we ought to use the dump as a rallying point, but it'd probably get target and blown up by enemy or friendly artillery. Lets just grab a few allies and fill our pockets.
