You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were with Havel and Ozen, who were now looking over Janice and Artya, the two demi-human newcomers who had come with you.

"I wish you could have just kept everybody in the Monastery while I was away." Havel grumbles, clearly aiming his barb at Ozen. "I was hoping you could at least keep things handled here."

"I was simply acting in what I thought best for the Order." Ozen says with a sly grin.

Havel is silent at this, but you can tell he was glaring at his fellow Marshal under his heavy helmet.

"Anyways, to the issue at at hand." Havel turns to face Janice an Artya. "It seems the Frontier still holds surprises for us after all."

"The same for us!" Janice smiles. "We never realized anybody could have built such a huge city!"

Artya jabs at Janice's shoulder in frustration.

"Ah, yes, well, we've told you about our little problem." Janice continues, referring to how her tribe's valuable weirwood trees were dying. "Would you be willing to help us?"

"I am the wrong person to ask." Havel sighs. "We are not experts in the magical arts. That's the territory of the Mages, though we can help you get into contact with them."

"Hnnnn, and how about those silly Paladins?" Ozen slips in to the conversation. "Should they be informed of this little development as well?"

"Hrrrm." Havel pauses.

Probably with more scouts investigating the Frontier Kingdom.

The very least, we need to find a good representative for their race. Normally, I'd suggest Morgan since she's been somewhat introduced to the greater nobility at the dance, but since we have no elders, Janice will have to do for now.

You give a nod. Whatever happened, the Paladins were eventually doing to find out anyways, so you might as well just start things off on a good foot with them.

"The Paladin will find out anyways." Havel decides. "I'll invite them to send a representative as well."

"And where shall we hold this little meeting then?" Ozen asks, leaning back in her seat. "In the city? With possible Elf spies and sympathizers lurking about? Or within the safety of our walls here?"

"City officials gathering in the Monastery could send the wrong message." Havel grunts. "A very wrong message to whoever is watching."

"But we might attract all sorts of unwanted attention bringing new demi-humans in..." Ozen trails off.

You point right down the table. If they were going to meet, it would be on your own home ground.

"See? The Templar agrees." Ozen smiles smugly.

"That he does." Havel nods. "Then prepare the defenses. I shall make the necessary summons."

"Of course." Ozen nods as she gets up.

"Thank you again for going through all this trouble for us!" Janice says as she bows her head. Artya bows her head as well.

"Oh, don't worry about it!" Ozen laughs. "We're simply helping those in need! We Templars shouldn't forget our roots, after all!"

"So, I think we'll just wait here until they arrive." Janice tells you as she settles into one of the seats. "Don't worry, we won't be going anywhere!"

You decide to go out to check on the rest of your party. They're easy enough to find, as they've all gathered in the courtyard. It was already fairly empty, thanks to Ozen mobilizing her acolytes to prepare the Monastery's defenses, giving you some semblance of privacy.

Naru, unsurprisingly, was taking care of the laundry, hanging up clothes to dry out in Sol's light. Niko was testing her freshly healed arm by throwing knives at set up targets. Morgan looked to be... napping. Curled up under a tree with Romulus. Perhaps she was still a bit fatigued from your entry into the Elven Quarter. And finally, Nino was off to the side doing... something. You're not quite sure what as she keeps her face glued to a book and makes odd gestures in the air, blue sparks flying from her fingers.

Agreed, in fact, breeding domesticated direwolves for the templar as battle companions, defenders, and hunter/trackers might be worth looking into. Maybe even magic it up a little to breed rideable giant dire wolves, they'd be pretty terrifying too, considering how big they already are.

Not sure if that is a good idea. We don't want to breed out all of their nature, otherwise we just end up with dogs.

I think a good analogy is the mustang. A wild horse broken in which is a lot smarter than a domesticated horse, but must be watched over constantly so they don't go back to being wild.

You had over to Niko, who was still practicing her knife throws. You could see her previous shots, the little knives sticking out of the round wooden targets she had set up. You note that they're all pretty tightly grouped, but not quite on target in the center.

"Yeah, my arm's still a bit sore so I can't quite put in the strength I want to." Niko sighs as she stretches her arm. "But hey, at least I can fight with it now!"

You nod as you look at the targets.

You tap Niko on the shoulder and point to her. You wonder if a runaway princess like her was okay with getting caught up in what was looking to be a serious conflict between humans and Elves once again.

"Hey, you went out of your way to let me tag along with your group." Niko smiles warmly. "It's the least I can do to help you all out. Even if I'm a runaway, I've still got a princess' honor, you know!"

You pat Niko on the head and mime having a crown on your head. Despite what she says, you think she'd make a great queen.

"Hah, if only my sister were here to see you say that!" Niko chortles heartily. "She's never had a particularly high opinion of my ruling skills."

You cross your arms. Obviously she was mistaken.

"Well, if ya ever have the bad luck of meeting her, you can say that to her face!" Niko snickers.

"Heeeeey! Templar!"

You look up to see one of Ozen's acolytes dashing over to you.

"Some of the guests have arrived!" She announces.

Already? That was rather fast. You head over to the front gate to see that the first one to arrive was...

The Twins are quick. Quicker than you realize as they lunge forward and tackle you to the ground, your armor clanging loudly on the stone floor.

"We finally tracked you down, Templar!" Caroline grins. "Now you'll give us our due!"

"We want more headpats." Justin says simply.

"Y-You're not supposed to say that out loud!" Caroline blanches at her twin. "A-and not in front of the Archmagus!"

"Oh?" Elias tilts his head curiously the side before moving along with a chuckle. "I suppose I'll leave your three to your business then."

The two girls then return their gaze at you, their golden eyes piercing through your helmet.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have 2 points!

The Twins nod in agreement, satisfied with your headpats. Fortunately for you, Nino hadn't come across the scene. She seemed to have a knack for showing up right when something like this happened. Well, that was a bit of a good thing. You could do without her exploding half the Monastery.

The Twins get off of you and you get back up to your feet, dusting off your armor.

"So what the heck is this meeting about, anyways?" Caroline asks curiously.

"Now Caroline, if the Archmage felt he could not tell us, then neither should the Templar." Justine chastises her sister.

"But, but-" Caroline sputters.

You just motion for the two of them to follow you as you lead them to the meeting room.

And that's when they lock eyes with Janice and Artya. You can already see the Twins' eyes tracking Artya's flicking tail, and the shine coming from Janice's eyes as she spies more little ones.

Justine is across in a flash. Whether it was some sort of spell, or if she was actually moving that quickly, you weren't too certain. However, that didn't change the fact that Justine was already holding Artya's tail in her hands, running her fingers through the soft fur while a surprised Artya flails her arms frantically.

Caroline, meanwhile, was not so lucky, as she gets tackled and bear hugged by Janice.

"Ohmgosh you're so adorable!" Janice squeals. "And twins, too! A good omen!"

"MMMPH!" Caroline makes a muffled shout as she tries to squirm her way out of Janice's deadly grip.

Suddenly there was a loud CRACK and Caroline, Justine, and Janice were all left rolling on the ground, clutching their foreheads in pain.

"That's enough play." Elias says calmly, smoke still rising from his index and middle fingers. "We're not the only attendees, and I would like you two to at least appear professional."

"Y-yes, Archmage." The Twins bow their heads apologetically.

"And Janice, please control yourself." Havel rumbles.

"R-right." Janice nods.

Artya just shakes her head in exasperation.

And throughout all this, Ozen just chuckles with amusement, her dark eyes taking everything in.

Soon enough, Lucina, Solaire, and Valentia arrive as well and take their seats. Lucina and Solaire, if they were surprised at the sight of Janice and Artya, hid it well. Valentia, meanwhile, hesitates and gulps, apparently attempting to suppress some sort of emotional outburst.

Janice meanwhile vibrates incessantly upon seeing Valentia enter, but she manages to retain her self control, thankfully.

"It is good to see all of you here." Havel says as he gazes at the gathered members. "As you can see, we have a pair of.. visitors. I've already told you about their plight so we won't have to repeat another explanation."

"I'm just fascinated that there was a civilized tribe of demi-humans in the Frontier all this time." Lucina puts a hand to her chin. "This is rather unprecedented."

"Indeed." Elias nods. "And this weirwood they speak of... I would like to have samples, if I may."

"If they're followers of Sol, then we gladly welcome them!" Solaire nods. "And if not, we'll gladly teach them His ways!"

"A-ah, um, wow." Janice blinks, quite clearly overwhelmed by all this happening at once.

You decide you needed to help guide the conversation for Janice. You pick up the weirwood staff Janice had brought with her and deposit it in front Elias.

"Oh?" His eyes smolder as he examines the item. "Hm, yes, to the normal eye, this would appear as regular wood, but within..."

Elias reaches out a single finger and taps the staff. Everybody gasps as the wood begins to exude a blue glow from within.

"This wood has been saturated with mana somehow." Elias' jaw hangs open. "I know of no natural process this can occur yet... here it is."

"Is it... dangerous?" Valentia asks, eying the wood cautiously.

"Of course not!" Janice huffs. "Or else none of our tribe would be alive!"

"No, it's not dangerous on its own, but as with everything, it's all about how it's used." Elias nods. "And you say these trees are dying?"

"Yes." Janice nods. "You seem to know how mana works. Can you help?"

"Hmmmm..." Elias pauses. "I would have to observe a live specimen with my own eyes. That would mean traveling to your lands."

"That can be arranged!" Janice says quickly.

"Are you sure this is a good time to be leaving on an expedition?" Lucina asks with concern. "Given the current situation in the city? The Paladins and Mages are the pillars of public order, and if one of the leaders takes their leave..."

"I'm confident the Paladins will be able to maintain order." Elias responds. "Isn't that right, Solaire?"

"Of course!" The Paladin Grand Master laughs heartily. "No worries, me and Vally can handle things here!"

Valentia grumbles something under her breath.

"And what shall the Templars be doing?" Lucina turns to Havel and Ozen.

"Hunting down those Elves, of course." Ozen chuckles. "We have to know what they're planning, after all."

"And you, Templar?" Lucina turns her gaze to you.

You nod to Elias. You'll escort him to Janice's village. Plus, it might also help Morgan to find her roots.

"I'm honored, Templar." Elias nods and gives a playful gaze to the Twins. "Perhaps I wouldn't even need to bring any protection."

"W-w-what?!" Caroline squeaks. "Y-you're just joking, right Archmagus?"

You look to the Twins and just give a little thumbs up. It was going to be a long and hard journey so extra hands were always welcome.

"T-T-Templar...!" Caroline blubbers.

You get a distinctly ominous feeling you knew what was going to happen next.

However, before the Twins even think about tackle hugging you, there's a brief flash and you feel a heavy impact knocking you to the side. It's only then that you realize that Nino, of all people, had somehow materialized next to you and just drop kicked you out of the Twins' path, causing them to leap into empty air and stumble as they nearly fall on their faces.

"Hah! I knew you two were up to something!" Nino sticks her tongue out at the twins. "Trying to ambush him, are you? Well not on MY watch!"

Havel, Elias and Valentia shake their heads while Lucina and Solaire try to stifle amused laughter. Ozen and Janice don't even hide it.

"NINO!" Caroline growls. "We got unfinished business with you, too!"

"That's correct." Justine takes out a small notebook and flips through it. "You currently have thirty books overdue for return to the library."

"N-not that!" Caroline whines.

"Bring iiiiiiit!" Nino taunts them.

You quickly grab Nino by the collar and yank her back, breaking her little show of bravado.

"Heeeeeey!" Nino whines. "Why'd you do that for?!"

"Children always have to be the most troublesome ones." Elias shakes his head and turns to Solaire. "I'm not sure how you handle it."

"Vally here is simply an angel!" Solaire boasts as he pats his grown daughter on the head. "She'd never do anything so rash!"

Except it looked like Valentia either wanted to die from embarrassment or punch her father. Maybe both.

"It's no fair! No faaaaaair!" Nino continues.

"Anyways, I believe that means our course of action is planned." Havel speaks up. No doubt he wanted to get everybody out before something REALLY bad happened.

"Well, looks like you're going to be a busy Templar." Lucina winks at you. "Good luck!"

"You know." Solaire pats you on the shoulder. "Doesn't sit right with me that your group will travel so far without a Paladin. I'm sure Vally would love to accompany you!"

"W-w-what?!" Valentia sputters.

"Hm? You're against it?" Solaire turns to his daughter.

"I n-never said that..." Valentia mumbles.

You nod and give a thumbs up. Valentia was more than welcome to join up.

"R-really?" Valentia blinks.

You nod again.

"Okay! But only because you asked!" Valentia nods.

Kids.

And with that, everyone makes their customary goodbyes and takes their leave. It wasn't wise for outsiders to linger in the Monastery for too long, after all.

It was agreed that you would wait for Elias to make the necessary preparations for travel, which worked fine for you. Your party needed the chance to rest for a bit before going out again.

"I still don't like you letting those two come." Nino pouts as she follows you back to the courtyard.

You just shrug. They're nice enough.

"I'm just so happy that we get to travel with more companions!" Janice says happily. "And they're all such adorable little things!"

Artya just shakes her head.

"Hey! Templar!" You hear Naru yell at you. "Why do I got the feeling you just made my life so much harder now?!"

That Naru, she seemed to have some pretty terrifying intuition.

Still, your newest quest was certainly going to be an interesting one.
