Your phone woke you up. It was the Captain. Being the dutiful officer you are, you pick it up. “Captain?”

“Elodie. We got a situation developing down in the loading docks. A bunch of Logistics girls are striking.”

“Striking?”

“They’re on strike I mean,” says the Captain. She actually sounds genuinely angry for once. “Those goddamn brats are refusing to do work and I need you or Caldwell to fix this. NOW.”

“Okay, right away, Captain.” Well, it was the early morning at least so you didn’t miss out on too much sleep. You hurried to grab your uniform. You can skip the shower, it’s not like anyone will notice anyway. “Winona.” Winona’s probably still asleep but just in case she’s not, you call out to her bunk. “I’m heading out, hold down the fort. I’ll try to be there for practice, okay?”

No response. As you expected. You quickly dial Denise’s number.

“We shall not! We shall not be moved! We shall not! We shall not be moved! Just like a tree that’s standing by the water! We shall not be moved!”

The loading docks is abuzz with activity. Student Security had already arrived with riot shields and batons, facing down a large group of students barricading the way to the docks. You step up to the front and sigh. “What’s the issue?” you ask one of the Security girls.

The girl says, “These buggers are sayin’ they have transgressions with us. Apparently they feel they’ve been overworked these past few weeks.” Considering it’s the start of the school year, you don’t blame them. You don’t know the exact details in full, but the amount of luggage they have to bring in, the amount of excess food that needs to be processed and refrigerated, the amount of cargo that needs to be cleared and exported… Yeah, that does sound like a lot of work. But that can’t be entirely why they’re rioting.

“What else?” you ask.

The security girls all shrug. “Dunno. They’ve been singing that same old song for the past two hours now, fecking numpties.”

> “Okay, let’s start negotations. Get me a megaphone.”
> “Much as I hate to do this, go in there and break it up. We can’t stop the import/export for any reason.”
> “They’ll eventually starve. Just surround them and wait for them to surrender.”

You grab a megaphone from one of the girls then switch it on. “Hello!” you call. They stop their singing to look at you from behind their tall barricade. “I’m Commander Elodie Zumwalt. I’d like to know what exactly is going on here and what I can do to end this conflict.”

One of the girls yells, “We want a break!” They all holler and yell in agreement. “We want compensation! And we want our pets!”

“What do you mean your pets?” you ask.

“Commander Caldwell told us our pets wouldn’t be shipped over here to live with us until we got all the rush orders completed!” yells one of the girls. “Now my dog is stuck at the airport!”

“My pet ferret is waiting for me in one of the cargo ships!” another girl yells.

“Commander Caldwell told me chickens are not service animals!” A third girl shouts. “And now I keep getting angry for no good reason!” You sigh. Honestly, that’s reasonable. People have to have their pets with them. You can’t just tell them they can’t have their pets. “All of our pets are stuck in logistics limbo!”

“Okay, I understand,” you say. “You want your pets and you want a break from work. We can settle on two extra days off and priority being given to deliver your pets to your dorms. How about that?”

The striking girls huddle behind the barricade for a few minutes. Then one of them shouts, “Nuts! We want a whole week!” A whole week!? That’ll put the Logistics Department so far behind though! “Take it or leave it!”

“Can we settle for four days instead?” you ask.

“One week!” they all yell in unison. “One week! One week! One week!”

> “Okay. You can get a week.”

“You’re not getting a week. Best I can do is four days.”

“Then go away!” They all cheer and shout, aiming not to leave their barricade it seems. You sigh, rubbing your nose. This is the last thing you need right now.

One of the security girls leans closer to you. “Want us to break out the tear gas?” They have tear gas!?

“No,” you say, rubbing your nose hard. Ugh. “Look, let’s just take a step back and think about this. They have a very good problem with us and that’s their pets being stuck in limbo. Now, the week obviously we can’t give them that. We’d be slowed to a crawl trying to process everything and we’d only have to work ourselves to death catching up.” You think on this. Maybe a spa voucher? Maybe free tickets to the next Tankery match? A date with Gertrude Pool? Tempting.

“Regardless,” says the Security girl. “We’ll keep an eye on these buggers here. We’re not authorized to use non-lethal force anyway until the crowd gets violent.” That’s good at least.

Still. How are you going to make these protestors disperse?

Get the pets now. Confirm pet arrivals to the owners, then negotiate. They might calm down a bunch if they get their animals out of transport Hell.
>>

You send a runner to get Lyra down here. While you wait though, you take the megaphone out again. “Alright. Listen up.” The protestors stick their heads up again, looking at you curiously. “I can work with you. I can have your pets brought here and out of logistics limbo within two hours. But we cannot do the entire week for you. All you laborers are an essential component to the Logistics cycle, and if we lose all of you for a week, everyone will suffer once you all come back to work. We’ll be playing catch up for twice as long and work twice as hard.”

They all look at each other, then one of them calls to you. “What else you got!?”

“Um.” Masseurs? “I can enlist a bunch of masseurs for your designated break periods.” They’re all quiet. “… they’ll be boys.” That immediately gets them talking.

One of the security girls walks up to you. “Caldwell’s on her way. I’m also told Caldwell is gonna speed up the pets arrival too.” Okay, that’s good. At least she understands what’s at stake here.

One of the girls behind the barricade yells to you more demands. “Where are our pets?!”

“I’ve just been informed your pets are now coming. They’ll be here soon,” you say.

“We want our pets now! And we want more compensation for the overworking too!” You roll your eyes. “You run the Tankery team, right!?”

“… correct.” This is going to go poorly.

“Some of the girls want to drive your tanks around!” she yells. “One day only! We’ll replace the fuel and fix any damage on our time and money! Throw in the massages and our pets and we’ll break the barricade down!” You grit your teeth. Ugh. Griselda just trusted you to- AUGH…

You sigh. “Fine. We can do that. But under extreme supervision. That means my people will ride with you while you do your work. And nothing on the street. You get full access to the grounds and nothing else. Deal?”

“Deal!” yells one of them. They start climbing over the barricade. Oh thank God. You wipe your forehead. Griselda’s probably going to kill you later for this.

“Alright.” You motion to one of the girls in the police line. “Go and dismantle that barricade. Let’s get back to work.” All the protesters drop their signs and flags and start moving to dismantle the barricade. You’re surprised at how peaceful that was. Historically speaking Academyship protests were usually treated as mutiny. God you do not want to have to deal with mutinies.

“I gotta commend you, Ellie. Good work with the barricade,” says the Captain over the phone. You’re now overlooking the loading docks. Back to work as usual. Forklifts were carrying boxes, girls were scanning boxes through the machines, all the good stuff. “I can grant you an extra day off. Usually most girls go to the firehoses for that stuff but you handled it diplomatically. And I like that!”

“Thank you, Captain.”

“Good work. I’ll see you later.” She hangs up then.

Thank goodness.

“Foggy!” One of the protesters immediately runs over to hug her pet chicken. The chicken goes “bawk!” in response, letting itself be hugged by the incredibly grateful girl. More pets are brought to the girls, slowing down production a little. But you allow it. They’ve been away from their pets for a while so you simply watch. Girls are reunited with pet birds, dogs, cats, pigs, a whole assortment. You could open a zoo with this kind of diversity.

One of the girls steps up to you, holding her black coated puppy in her arms. “I must say, Elodie. Thank you so much for bringing our pets to us.”

“It’s no problem. I can understand the pain of being separated from them,” you say. “You all have the paperwork, right?”

“Right,” says the girl. “It’s just the rushing with the start of the school year has meant that low priority was given to our pets and other miscellanea. We can’t even get our sexy undies off the ships until we get all the food, water, etcetera off and unloaded.” … right. Okay. She smiles happily. “Do you have a pet?”

“No, not really,” you say. “Closest thing I guess is either Admiral Nimitz the cat in our office or sharing my gunner’s pet snake.”

“Oh.” The girl holds her puppy out to you. “Would you like to hold my dog? His name is Jango.” The dog barks, happily panting and wagging his tail to you.

You smirk, then hold your hands out. “Sure. Won’t hurt I guess.” The girl grins, then hands you her puppy. The dog happily sits in your hands, wagging his tail and batting it against your chest. Aw, little furball that he is, he’s adorable. He leans up and starts licking at your chin, tickling you and wetting your skin. Heh! Dogs. Far too friendly.

But they’re still nice. You gently pat its head and keep him close to your chest. “He’s a cute boy.”

“Thanks!” says the girl. “By the way. He has fleas so I wouldn’t hold him that close.” What. “I’m joking! Haha!” She points to you. “You should’ve seen the look on your face!”

You shudder. That one time you had bedbugs, you’re getting flashbacks, auuugh…

But regardless, it was a joke. You won’t snap. You simply hand the puppy back to her and giggle. She giggles too, gently nuzzling her baby boy. Hehe, fuck you too.

Oh well.

“Every team will be supervising somebody. And even if they damage a tank, they’ve said that they will cover fuel and damage costs. I’m just concerned more that they might hurt themselves. Tankery isn’t exactly a joyriding sport like NASCAR.”

Tessa says, “Are you sure though that’ll be enough?”

“I’m positive,” you say. “I’m assured that the girls can handle a few excitable laborers. What’s the worst that can happen?”

“Woooohooo!” The tanks are all out in the fields, spinning in circles, racing around the length of the field, firing off their main cannons into the air. The crew commanders are having trouble trying to get the girls into line. The only tank that isn’t out there is Iris’ Churchill and Griselda’s M4 Sherman (Griselda would kill you if you let her tank get taken out for a joyride). You take a look and see Stack screaming at her crew of joyriders from outside the tank as they race the Comet against Lyra’s own Comet tank.

Iris steps up next to you, taking a sip of tea. “Well. This is a right bother, isn’t it?”

“Do you have any more tea?” you ask. Iris nods, handing you a saucer and teacup. You take it and immediately inhale the tea in one gulp.

“Alright, listen up!” you yell. You’ve managed to get the girls to stop riding around long enough to address them. They all sit in tanks, waiting around for you to speak. “Here’s the deal. You can keep doing your joyriding business. But! No ramming into each other, no getting mud or dirt on the tanks unless you want to clean it up, no going over sixty miles per hour, no crashing into any of the targets on the field, no trying to get air off the dunes, and certainly no doing donuts, powerslides, or anything else! Any questions?” One of the girls raises her hand. “Yes?”

“Are you going to let us have fun?” she asks.

“Very funny,” you say. “What I’m doing is making sure this is safe for everyone. Just because we do these stunts during our matches doesn’t mean we do them all the time. And I’m certainly not going to let people who’ve never driven tanks before follow our example. Got it?” They all agree and nod, reluctantly. “Good. Now, commanders. Keep an eye on those tanks. Alright?”

With that, they start backing the tanks out into the training field. Iris says, “Quite harsh, don’t you think?”

“I just don’t want to deal with the hassle of any of the tanks getting damaged,” you explain. “They said they’ll fix it themselves but honestly I’d rather they play it safe.” Iris nods, concurring. “I’m just glad they didn’t take Griselda’s tank out.”

Athena leans back on the Sherman as you approach. “Yeah, Griselda would kill you if that happened.” Really? “One time last year, a Freshman accidentally rammed Griselda’s Sherman hard enough to rip one of the VVSS bogies off. Griselda tore into her so badly the girl burst into tears on the spot.”

“Jesus.” You fold your arms, frowning. “Seems a little harsh.”

“It did at the time,” says Athena. “But that ramming ruined the bogie, we had to pay out of our own pocket to replace it. I’d be mad too.” Eh.

While the commanders are out managing and watching the tank joyriders, you decide to hold lecture. Iris sits in the back dutifully, watching over everyone while you’re up at the front. “Now, let’s review our potential opponents in the postseason. Robert A. Heinlein, Camp Gagetown, and J. Walter Christie Polytech. We’ve defeated them all before. But now this is serious. Because one loss here means we’re out of it. Tough shit. No más.

“So Robert A. Heinlein. A lot of US tanks, primarily Shermans, the Pershing, and the Chaffee. Their tactics are primarily focused around the offensive. They won’t let up once the combat begins and they’re not going to stop for anything. They’re like a freight train.” You see everyone paying attention responsibly. Seems now that the tournament has come this far, everyone knows what’s at stake now. Good. “That’s also their big disadvantage. If we get them into a position we want, it’ll be hard for them to disengage. We’ve beaten them once before with even less tanks than we have. And trust me, we’ll beat them again this time.”

One girl raises her hand. “Question.” It happens to be Patton from the Junior Historians. “I noticed those Canucks have their ace in the hole in the form of Meryl. Is she going to be something we have to work around?” Oh, right to business then. Everyone murmurs nervously it seems.

“Yeah, I’ve seen her match highlights,” says Serina. “It doesn’t look great for us.”

“She shot a tank through a wall!” yells Regina.

“Forget that, she bounced a shell off the ground and into the bottom armor of a tank!” Serafina shouts. “Is that even physically possible!?”

Blaine from the Survivalist Club says, “I hear Meryl can hit a fly with a shell at 200 meters.” She leans closer to Jaime, grinning. “And that she once shot a boar from a moving helicopter at twice that distance.”

“That doesn’t even have anything to do with Tankery!” yells Jaime.

Eleanor says, “I hear Meryl has a boyfriend!” That immediately gets everyone shouting and arguing.

You slap your clipboard on the podium. “Guys, guys! Please! Let’s not turn Meryl into some mythical monster!” You grab the podium. “Now, Meryl is a formidable ace yes. We haven’t seen it all that much because Meryl was going easy on us our first time around.” Everyone is quiet at that. “That’s not opinion, I believe that to be fact. She matched our numbers on the first round, we beat her handily. She outnumbered us, almost got us at one point, but we still broke through. Imagine if she had been trying. That doesn’t mean she’s invincible. Now, Serina, you-…”

Hold up a fucking second. “Serina.” You squint at her. “Aren’t you supposed to be guiding the visitors in their tank runs?”

“Oh that?” Serina says, “They said they could handle it. Said they handled tractors before.” Wait. Regina, Serafina. What are they doing here!?

“Who did you leave them with!?” you yell.

Serina says, “Denise.”

And as if on cue, you hear a loud explosion and crashing noise outside of the lecture room.

You look at Serina, who is going white with shame. She realizes what she’s done. As do Regina and Serafina. “I’m going to kill you three.” You quickly step off the stage and hurry outside. Iris as well too hurries outside.

There you see the worst possible situation. The girls rammed the King Tiger right into Griselda’s parked Sherman. Oooooh boy. The engine was set afire, the suspension on that side of the tank looked completely ruined, and it seemed like the hull looked partially caved in from the impact. The visitor girls all look to you, like deer in the headlights. Denise looks positively wrecked from the impact, still holding onto the back of the King Tiger’s turret in a death grip.

“NOW.” They immediately do as you say. You walk up to the wreck and fold your arms. The girls riding in it can barely look you in the eye. “Okay. Look. This isn’t bad. We can fix this.” You snap your fingers, and Denise immediately perks up. “Denise, get that fire out.” She nods, hurrying to find a fire extinguisher. “You all, go ahead and get out of the tank. And we’ll handle the immediate damage control, alright?” The girls immediately dismount and hurry to one side of the hangar, the side you’re not on.

Oh boy. You sigh. This is going to be one heck of a headache.

You’ve decided to end practice for today. But you didn’t dismiss Serina, Regina, or Serafina. You want to talk to them personally about the damage that they caused through their negligence. Though the IS-2 and the Pershing weren’t here, just considering the damage they would’ve done is making your skin crawl.

One of the girls takes her sailor cap off, holding it in front of her chest. “Um. Elodie?” She steps up to you, frowning deeply. “We’d like to say sorry. We were just having fun as all but we definitely got carried away. Can you forgive us? I don’t blame you if you don’t.” She mopes quietly in front of you, her eyes facing the floor.

> “I forgive you. But Griselda won’t.”

Honestly, this is just disappointing at this point. How many times have they gotten the team in trouble with their immature bullshit now?

At this point, its better to face the wrath ourselves...

As Naval Studies students, there is an expectation of responsibility from you. It's a shame to see that expectation was misplaced.

We will face Griselda. The four of us. I put you in a place of trust. I'll take my punishement for that. You will take yours for putting Denise in charge of untrained joyriders.

Clearly, I fail at reading comprehension. I think several others have also.

They promised to fix it, let them fix it asafp

“You’ve caused a lot of trouble in day. First with the protest now with this,” you say. She frowns deeply, continuing to look down at the floor. “It’ll be tough to say. But I won’t be cruel or anything. You said you’d fix any damage and cover fuel as well.” You motion to the wreckage being pulled apart. “This is your chance.”

She nods. “Of course.” She offers her hand. “We’ll do our best to fix it, don’t worry.” You shake it politely, nodding. “Um, by the way, name’s Claudia. Claudia Saint Simon.” She smiles. “For what it’s worth, I think you guys do really good stuff out there. You work really well together as a team, I admire that. I mean, I just showed up, I’m a Freshman sooo…” She shrugs. “I’ll just go.” She points to the wreckage.

“Try not to do any more damage, okay, Claudia?” She nods, walking away from you.

You sigh again. Ugh, such a headache from all this. Now what should you do?

Now this is appropriate

We should talk to Denise. Let her know this is not her fault in any way. And we won't let any blame fall on her.

You sit at Griselda’s desk, Iris standing beside as you stoically. You lean back in your seat, looking at all of them. “When Griselda comes back, we will face her together, the four of us. I put all of you in a position of trust. Now, I’ll take my punishment for that. But you’ll take yours for putting Denise in charge of untrained visitors. These tanks are not toys or cars. They’re machines of war that can seriously injure someone or worse if neglected. Which the three of you are responsible of doing right now.” The three of them can’t really bear to look at you. But it’s clear from their fidgeting and their closed postures that they are listening to you. “Your tanks aren’t yours to damage or beat up either. They’re property of the school too. And Griselda pays for them out of her own pocket.” You lean on the desk. “You’re really lucky the girls who drove these tanks have agreed to pay for the damage out of their own pocket. Otherwise, I think Griselda would crucify you girls and make even Judas Iscariot cringe. What do you girls have to say for yourself?”

Serina says, “It won’t happen again.”

You sigh. “You promise?”

“We promise,” says Serafina.

“We’ve been through this kind of stuff before you know. The George Washington match, the match with Joan D’Orleans as well. I hate for this to become a recurring problem,” you say. “Especially right before our first postseason performance. You girls realize again that one mistake could cost us dearly?” They all nod.

Regina says, “We just thought Denise could handle it.”

“Denise is my personal assistant,” you say. “Not a Tankery specialist. Now I appreciate your enthusiasm to attend the lecture. And I assume that’s why you skipped out on doing what I asked you to do. But all of you did something that could get other girls kicked out of other teams. You’re lucky we need everyone we can get.” You fold your arms, leaning back. “Got it?”

“Got it,” they say.

> “Good. Get out.”
> “I’ll have Iris supervise you three. You’ll be working through the night on the tanks.”
> “Good, now get out there and work. I’ll be watching.”

Yep. Agreed.

Denise gives you a cup of coffee as you watch the girls walk on the tanks. The engine is going to have to be fixed. Lots of parts are going to have to be sourced to replace the ones lost in the fire. Not to mention that huge hull cave in has actually put a hole right into the tank. That’s going to take some time to fix too. The King Tiger for its credit was more or less intact but…

Ugh, Griselda is going to kill you. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t handle them,” says Denise.

“They shouldn’t have asked you, Denise. It’s not your fault,” you say. Serina, Serafina, and Regina work hard on disassembling the exposed engine of the Sherman. Denise frowns, standing by your side. You’ve been here for a few hours now. It’s already night out. Most of the girls have gone home, including your crew.

Serina stands up, wiping her forehead with a rag. “Well. The engine at least isn’t a total loss.”

> Help the girls work.
> Keep watching them. You said you’d supervise.

We have to fix what we did wrong, which was not supervising sufficiently with these three. But we are not helping. They must clean up their share of the mess.

When its fixed, we face Griselda.

We should send Denise home soon. She did nothing wrong, so she shouldn't suffer.

You sigh. “Denise, you can go home if you want.” She blinks, tilting her head. “You don’t need to stay with me. This wasn’t your fault anyway.”

Denise says, “If you’re staying, I’m staying.” She takes a thermos of coffee of her own and pours one out for herself. “I’m your personal assistant after all. Where you go, I go. Never will you walk alone.” That makes your heart flutter slightly. She grins, taking a sip of her coffee. “I’m with you as long as you’re here. Alright?”

“Okay,” you say simply. Well. Can’t fault her loyalty to you at least. You take a sip of your own coffee and let the hot liquids perk you up a little. You hate that these three are making you stay late but you’re not just going to let anyone else suffer on their behalf. It should be you that watches them until they do their dirty business.

Serafina stands up straight. The three of them look at the engine. “Man. That engine took a beating.”

“Yeah.” Serina kneels down, glaring at it. “How bad do you think Griselda is going to kill us?”

Regina says, “I heard once that Griselda Bautista Bombed a girl for stealing her textbook. What do you think she’ll do to us?”

“That’s bullshit!” Serina says. “Griselda would never just Bautista Bomb people.”

“Yeah,” says Serafina. “She strikes me more as a girl that’d throw you off Hell in a Cell through an announcer’s table.”

Serina says, “No, no. Griselda seems more like the girl to spin piledrive you for so much as breathing on her tank.”

“She’s not that mean,” Serafina states.

“But she is mean,” Regina says.

They all nod, agreeing.

They look over at the tank. “You know. Griselda’s done a lot for us. Even though she is mean,” says Regina. They all quietly agree. “I feel really bad.”

“Yeah.” Serina rubs her hands together. “Look. Punishment is one thing. But let’s at least make sure her tank gets fixed. If we do a good job, maybe she’ll let us off with a warning or something.”

“And if we don’t?”

“Well, we either hang together or we hang separately,” Serina states firmly. “Now come on, let’s get to figuring out how to fix that hole.” The three commanders group and start assessing the damage. You simply stand back and watch.

Well. At least they’re working together. Admirable somewhat.
