Hello, mercs, and welcome back to Magical Girl for Hire!

You are Miranda Styles, a relatively unscrupulous magical girl currently working for Silver Eye Solutions, a umbrella corporation for magical girl mercenaries such as yourself, located in scenic The Intersection, a dimensional nowhere and everywhere where you rest, recuperate, live, and get details for your next job. Currently, this is where you are- and you’re in the middle of a team meeting plus a couple. The reason? Renovations to your HQ! Specifically, getting a laboratory set up.

Although not ALL of your team is entirely for it, though…
>>
>>2299314
“Really, it’s for all of us,” you insist at the flat look of Lorelei. “The laboratory’s going to help all of us out.”

“How?” Izumi asks curiously.

That's a good question, and unfortunately it's one you can't answer immediately. Not because you don't know the answer, but because you don't want to reveal anything specific to the two temps. Still... “Well, the idea is to start producing a set of accessories to help augment our capabilities out on jobs. The lab WON’T just be Owlia’s playground.

“It’s not?” said named girl asks with a whine.

You just give her a flat look. “No. No it’s not. It’ll be a means so we ALL can benefit- so, for example, you can avoid any accidents like when you get shot, Izumi.”

She raises an eyebrow at that, but says nothing. You notice that Claudi has a very similar reaction, too.

Keeping that in mind, you continue. “Or when Lorelei needs more firepower when infiltrating.” Nero’s mouth stretches into a flat line, but he keeps quiet as well as he leans back. “If we can regularly synthesize these supplements, we can be a lot more efficient and have something else to support us during our job. THAT means we can grab BETTER jobs and everyone will have that much higher a chance to come back safe.” You give Lorelei a pointed look at that last line, and to be fair she does seem to be a bit more interested, face going from disinterested to at least curious.

“Well, that sounds...curious, I’ll admit,” Izumi says. “Can we get any further details? Or is this mostly theoretical?”

Owlia speaks up here. “Eeeeh...little of both. I have...call them proof of concepts.”

“Hm…” Izumi pauses to think here. “Perhaps...I might be interested. I’m wondering if perhaps you can’t synthesize something in particular…”

She shrugs. “Depends on what it is.”

Lorelei puts her head in her hands as she thinks it over. “...I want first crack at whatever you make. And I want something all for my own. No one else gets to know about it but me and bird girl.”

"Bird gi- wait, no, I get it. Yeah, I guess that makes sense," Owlia admits.

Of course. The temps won't use the kit only silver eye employees get it.
>>

I was concerned about the temps trying to spy or get something from us, since one can poof around and the other dropped sneaky magic "acid" on Izumi. also they really hate our guts(probably) and would try to sabotage our efforts.

just stupid paranoia, so I'm sure it won't happen since we/Sal can complain to their handler.

Guns? I bet it's guns.
>>

I think that after what their last prank caused they wouldn't try do this kind of stuff.

Also Owlia only manage to synthesize thanks to the books and she being a fucking genius. So even if they did steal it , i believe it won't be as easily replicated.

“Done.” Not sure why she's adamant about it, but might as well could use a field test. “We were going to do something like that anyway, most likely.”

Lorelei perks up in surprise. “Oh. Neat! Well, uh...suppose I should tell her what I'm hoping for. Mind comin’ on the side, here?” Without actually waiting for a response, she grabs the inventor by the arm and hauls her out of the room. Cylica raises an eyebrow, and she almost looks like she wants to follow them, but restrains herself.

“Hm. That’s curious- but I’m not offended. Whatever she wanted sounded somewhat important. I can wait my turn,” Izumi admits. “So, I think we’re all agreed?” She looks to Mono, who's been silent this entire time.

The wolf-ish girl shrugs. “Yeah, sure, I guess. I was really hopin’ fer that training area since sometimes it’s hard to get a free spot in the OTC, buuut...guess I can deal with it for now.” She was a low-ranked Outgoer anyway- honestly any job that she took by herself shouldn’t need a ton of sword work...hopefully.

“Alright, then, sounds like we’re all in agreement, then,” you opine as you pull out your FutureSight. “But, like I said earlier, we're a bit short...sixteen large Motes short, specifically…”

“... So what I'm going to do is put the rest of that in myself.” You decide. Considering the rest of the team had put in a pretty sizable amount of motes, you figured that was a decent number for you. “But from here on in the rest of you need to mark down what you want, so we don’t have to go through this kind of meeting again.”

>Current Total Motes: 61.40

>Current HQ Finances- 0 Motes!

>Laboratory Area Purchased!

“You’re too kind,” Cylica says- and you're actually not sure if she means it or not. “But I must say, the idea of having our own little personal laboratory again...rather enticing!” she leans back in her chair, while Claudi and Nero put on identically skeptic faces.

“Well, whatever ya got planned, I hope it works out for us. Sounds nice, at least.” Mono says gamely. “Won’t say no ta something that’ll keep me roamin’ longer.”

“Good, since that’s the crux of this all,” you note as you and the rest get up.

Before you can say more about it, Lorelei and Owlia come back in, the both of them smiling widely. “Hey, everything settled?” Lorelei asks.

“Quite,” Cylica responds. “We should have our laboratory in the next few cycles, if what I’ve heard about building speed is true…”

“It is,” you reassure. “So I dunno if it’ll be ready in time for Lorelei's mission, but as soon as she gets back…”

“Eh, fair enough,” Lorelei agrees, patting Owlia on the back. “I’ma gonna head out, speaking of that. Gotta get set for being the best robot trainer an’ stuff!” With that, she said she is out the headquarters, humming to herself. Owlia, to your slight surprise, smiles warmly.

Cylica just frowns. “We should go as well, dear; I imagine you’ll want to start planning out what will be going where in our new lab area?” The smile is thinner even than usual, her eyes not quite looking at Owlia.

It seems to register, too, as Owlia’s quick to dart over and wrap the former tyrant up in a hug. “Ohohoh, you’re right! Come on, I’m sure you’ve got plenty of ideas!” And they’re quick to leave, the cloak of the regent trailing swiftly out the door.

“Oh, dear.” Izumi’s got a hand to her mouth as she and Mono try to hold back snickers. “That’s...hm. I suppose I should be going, too, the- oh, actually.” Izumi turns to you. “I have a question, if you don’t mind. I was wondering if you’d accompany me on a job in the future.”

Interesting. “What kinda job?”

“Well, from what the specs said, we’d be doing guard duty over a nearby village that’s apparently a highly likely target for a demonic incursion.” she says.

“Guard duty for possible demons? That’s...a bit low-key to hire us,” you can’t help but note. “Usually people would want us AFTER the hordes start coming.”

She shakes her head in response, however. “Not at all- it seems like these are invisible to standard humans, and exceedingly more dangerous. Only people with abilities can see them. I’m pretty sure we’d be able to, and apparently the usual people who would respond to this sort of thing are tied up- if they did come through, they’d be overwhelmed.”

Ahh. Suppose that makes more sense. Still…

She nods, seeing your thoughtful expression. “It’s lacking an expiration date, and not listed as urgent, so I can only assume the offer is open until it actually happens. Still, I thought it’d be good to ask you anyway. I was planning on taking Mono as well, but we wanted to get a couple days more training in before we left.”

Sticky bomb training.

Alrighty!

>What to focus on? (Pick 2, see here for how improvement works.) https://pastebin.com/d1FAecB1

>Current Experimental Techniques:

>Sticky Bombs:
-Rank: D
-Current Cost: 250 Mana
-Current Description: Can fire off a one-shot blast that’ll stick to an enemy or other surface and remain undetonated until you will -it. Cannot be charged or shrunken, and has much less explosive power than a full charged magi-blast.

>Sparkling Fireworks:
-Rank: C
-Current Cost: 350 Mana
-Current Description: A showy technique that causes a lot of pieces of unfocused mana to erupt from your hand in a shower of sparkles, or at times small balls of mana that pop into the same. No real damage on it unless it hits point blank- and then it's basically kinda a 'burning' sensation. Doesn't stick, though- and the bright flash can briefly blind people, although not as well as Sun's Flare.

Theoretical Techniques:

>Reactive Armor
-Mana balls compressed by a protective light field that sticks to you. When enemies hit you, they are blasted away by the explosion which also propels you away from them to safety!
-Estimated Difficulty: Hard
-Estimated Mana Usage: 2000-1000

>Harmonized Mana Blasts (Harmony Blasts)
-Blasts which are on the same frequency as another individual's mana signature, in order to decrease the possibility of friendly fire.
-Estimated Difficulty: Moderately Easy.
-Estimated Mana Usage: Little

>Chain Lightning
-Ionizing a pathway with a low-power mana beam then sending our electric / burning aura down it, then extending that with multiple mana-paths. Link it with a feedback response to make the lightning attracted to the mana of sentient beings, utilizing their natural mana to augment and redirect to another source of mana.
-Estimated Difficulty: HARD
-Estimated Mana Usage: 5000-3000

>Electric Shield (Thunderdome)
-Saturating an area in baseline mana, then filling it with electrified mana in order to cause an area of effect that can damage anyone inside.
-Estimated Difficulty: Somewhat Hard.
-Estimated Mana Usage: 5000-2500
>>
Also, in case you're wondering- the rolls will be random during Lorelei's mission. Don't worry, I'll let you know.

“Alright. Guess it’s fine- I’ve got some training I wanted to do anyway.” While the sticky bomb idea you might table for now, you're wondering if there is a way that you might be able to do something a bit simpler, but just as useful with how the mana clings. It’d be quiet the boon to not have to worry about friendly fire, too- at least in one manner. As for the other... Well, friendly fire WOULD probably be a thing for that one. Give and take, you suppose.

>You are now Lorelei.

You can't help but hum a little tune to yourself as you look through your wardrobe. Thinking about it, the job might not be so bad. Might not be able to kill anyone, but you could probably mess with ‘em a bunch! And if worse comes to worse, well…

Some folks would be surprised what they could live through! He didn’t say anything about that!

Question now, though, is just how are you going to set up for your little foray into this wide world of robo battling? Do you want to go with something cute and adorably surprising, or maybe a cool and collected beauty? Perhaps goofy, yet threatening. Oh! Or maybe just more, hm... mysteriously aloof?

Gotta admit, you're kind of feeling sunny today! Well. Sunny in a funny sense. Pft, haha, no, yeah, this is gonna be great. You're going to be making all sorts of cool poses and everything! besides, heroic looking villain? Not something that happens every day! All right, now you may not be able to get any of those new goodies from Bird Girl, immediately- especially not your little...personal request...but you’ve still got a couple of things- your cute pistol from that western job, a small mana crystal set, oh, a dagger? When did you get that…? Meh, whatever. It’s got a good edge. You’ll take it. Probably going to use that more than the pistol.

There’s the usual stuff in your bag of holding, too, not that they’ll get much use for this one- fiber wire, needles, poison jars FOR the needles, dart gun, tazer- wait, no, those two might get some use- jar of water for those short circuits on demand...hm. Are you missing anything…

>Are you? Anything you want to pick up before you head out?

What is lorelei's total inventory?
Also, can we meditate in the meditation room before going into the mission, or she already has the buff applied from all the time that she uses it?
>>
>>2301969
Borrow a Shock Stone from Miranda for your gun. She has two, and will probably give the other one to Owlia for the lab (with the water and pepper stones as well, and her guns for the slots). It might be a bit less lethal than our default pepper stone, and more useful against robots.

Hmmm... probably a couple of things you could pick up. Although you suspect that where you're going they'll be in abundance. Flares, magnets, thermal paste, some kind of torch for cutting work. Maybe hacking tools, not that you’re fantastic at that without automated programs. Not stuff you need very often, but stuff that you’ve used before, might use again. Relatively simple tools that, if this guy’s as rich as he claims, will probably have plenty of. Still, there's at least one thing that you know they won't have that you need to pick up…

...Alright, got everything (and got in some last minute fun at Miranda’s expense), and with a couple extra hours of meditation, you feel...a lot more confident about this. Not like, chest-poundingly confident, but you're feeling a lot more at ease with what's going to be expected of you and how it might be best to handle it. You’re not floating, you’re in tune with yourself. This job is nothing you can’t pull off, absolutely. Hopefully you can keep this feeling up for quite a while.

>Lorelei is CLEAR-HEADED, and will be able to pick up on very subtle social cues and otherwise read situations even more acutely than normal to allow her a further range of ideas in such situations. Mana usage dropped by 5%.

A last minute snack to keep your belly filled, and you’re suited up- the good thing is that this suit has at the very least a way to drop the visor so that they could actually see your face. It's more of a 3/4 helmet than anything else when it’s like that, but it should work well enough. The bangles are actually metal. wondering if you can actually deflect stuff with him. not that you shouldn't need to, but just in case.

Well...no sense in putting it off any further. “Yo, Sal! I’m good to go!”

’Best of luuuuuuck out there. Please don’t screwwwwww it up!’

Man, Sal can be such a jerk sometimes. Even if he DOES mean well…

You arrive in a smattering of energy and a nice three-point stance, on a small raised podium, and already you can feel the weight of your uniform has increased. A quick glance around to your extremities and some very quick shifting of muscles reveals that there's been a few extra accoutrements to your outfit...including pauldrons.

Not a fan. Whatever, you’ll make due. Your color’s also changed from a brilliant yellow and white color scheme to something more burnt umber and gold. At least your costume is mostly skintight- you like that.

“So...who might this be?” A deep voice asks. “Is this the one I hired? Hmph. You look more like a fool hero than someone willing to obey my commands for pay.” You lift your head, to see a tall, well-dressed man standing in front of you, with a thin, black goatee and sharp looking eyes- the very picture of your stock evil corporate businessman. “Your name, then. I trust I won’t be wasting my hard earned funds.”

“Oho?!” Okay, showtime! “So, do you doubt the prowess of Shatterlight?”

“I do.” He says wryly.

“Then test me, I dare you! I’ll meet and exceed ANY challenge!” You proclaim, hands sprawled, hips jutted, letting yourself let loose a few weak Fireworks around the air.

The way he looks at you is...less than impressed. Eh, you'll work on him eventually. He just straightens his tie and looks at you imperiously. “Very well, would-be. Let’s test you, indeed. Follow me, and try not to gawk in awe at the opulence on display.” You realize that you seem to be in some sort of factory, or at the very least some sort of headquarters, all of it in a very interesting blue and purple color theme, and further in the back of the large room that you're in now you can see a row of computers with employees typing away diligently at them. It’s all very stylish, actually- a lot of fluorescent light tubing and a lot of his emblem, which looks sort of like a gear with a crow head inside.

He turns away, and you follow easily, strutting like the radiant warrior that you are. “There is a Minibot Arm Piece currently in the possession of one Ryo Kanzaki, known as the ‘Geo-Blaster’. It is a rare piece- not nearly as interesting to me as the experimental pieces I desire, but it would do well in my collection.” He explains as you both move down the hall. “Your test is simple- obtain this Arm Piece and return it to me. It is in a store known as Kanzaki Bot Services; a pathetic Minibot repair and parts seller. You will be granted your choice of one of three Minibots to accompany you in case of danger. Is that clear?” He looks back at you with an air of utter seriousness, and you can tell he's trying his best to hold back anything further than a slight scowl to remain professional.

> “Crystal! You need not fear- this will be pathetically simple for me!”
> “Are you expecting resistance from a small store such as that one?”

Hmph. A small parts store like that? With a bit of observation and some good timing, it shouldn't be that hard to nick a few mech pieces. “Crystal! You need not fear- this will be pathetically simple for me!” So, the possible resistance might be an owner and his robot, but if worse comes to worse you can probably trash the robot without violating the rider. Still, it's something you'd prefer to avoid, and you're still pretty sure that you'll be able to.

“Hm.” Mr. King says nothing about your boast, but simply snorts and turns back to his walk. “We here at King Industries pride ourself on the finest Minibot quality. And thus, any of these three bots that you’ll soon see before you will be more than adequate to assist in your actions.” He stops at a sliding door to his left, and presses his hand to the pad. A quick scan, and the both of you are in.

The area seems to be a sort of mechanical test bed, and you can see a number of different Minibots, none taller than 4 feet you’d say; many of them doing things such as running on treadmills, attacking dummies, lifting weights under a gauge, or even what seems to be firearms training with a small target range. One seems to just be waiting on the sidelines, watching everything.

“All bots, forward and in front!” Mr. King announces, his voice causing all of the robots present to immediately stopped what they were doing and face him- in one poor bot’s case causing it to drop a barbell inadvertently- that dent’s gonna need fixing…

“YES SIR, MISTER KING!” A plethora of synthetic voices call out in unison as they all salute.. Mr. King nods once, then speaks again. “This is Shattersun.”

“Shatterllight, sir.” you can’t help but remind him.

He just glances at you briefly before resuming. “Shatterlight will be taking one of you along to assist in an assignment for me. As you all know, there are yet a great number of Minibots who are in need of someone of my greatness to kite them. And to aid in this endeavor, we need to show them that we are capable of providing superior quality. It has long come to my attention that there is a Minibot part that is in the hands of a grubby and unmotivated old shopkeeper that sorely needs to understand just what he has in his hands, and how it can be put to better use.” The scowl on his face deepens as he speaks about the man, and you get the feeling that the two REALLY aren’t fans. “Whichever she picks will be assisting her in retrieving the part that he has kept hoarded. Is that clear?”

“YES SIR, MISTER KING!” Wow, they’re dedicated. Now, with a smile on his lips, he turns to you.

“They will introduce themselves, state their combat style and special capabilities, and from there you will decide.” With that, he waves his arm towards them in a flourish. “I guarantee that you will not find Minibots of this quality anywhere else.”

There’s a number of them...might as well get started going over them.

The first is a red colored, cat like robot. It seems to have sharp, red, triangular eyes and a whip like tail that it waves around lazily. You can also see that at the end of its hands and feet are clawed protrusions. It examines them casually, and you can see some sparks of electricity arc from them as it does so.

> “Yo. I’m Thundercat, a Speed-class Minibot. My whole thang is close-quarters, if it wasn’t obvious. Usually I get in, claw the other bot up like whoa, shock ‘em for good measure if I can. That trick takes a lot outta me, but, eh. What can I say? I get results, and I've yet ta meet the bot that can match my speed. Don’t expect me to win heavy firefights without the right parts, though- you’re stupid if you send me against one of those Shooter bots.”

It looks you up and down, and it… cocks its head and squints a bit. “Seriously, though, what’s with the getup? Ya look like some old school supahero.”

Right, then. Electric-type catbot. Got it.

The next one is much bulkier, reminding you of a very large sumo wrestler, only painted green and with clamps as hands. And a robot, obviously. He thumps his chest in greetings, and you can see his bright orange circular LED eyes light up just a bit.

> “Ha! I am Battor, A Bruiser-class! And one of the best, dare I say! I grab, I toss, I crush if need be! None can withstand my might, and few and unseat me. Unlike my associate here, I am not so nimble, but I can certainly take a beating better than she can!”

“Feh,” Thundercat scoffs, but leaves it at that.

Battor just laughs. “I’d be more than willing to prove it in a practice ring! Especially if you’d just let me take yer hand for a second.”

Thundercat shudders. Gotcha.

cont. (One more!)

>>2302728
The next guy seems to have a knight motif, silver and shining, and with an angled helmet with a slight beetle-esque design. Attached to his left hand is a shield, and attached to his right hand is a sword which it uses to salute with. He has dark blue, square eyes, and seems to be every inch the prodigal soldier.

>Hail! I am Exor, a Balanced-class Minibot! You you not fear any battle in my presence, for I have no weaknesses, and am capable of utilizing my shield to its fullest extent possible! i can attack and defend with skill in equal measure!”

“Really?” you ask.

> “Unless the lack of noted strengths can be considered a weakness! I am also somewhat vulnerable at range, I suppose…

He...kinda trailed off at the end there, a bit. Suddenly he looks a lot less sure of himself. The bot to his left pats him on the back, and he brightens up a bit.

Speaking of, said bot is very clearly modeled after a beetle, although it stands upright like all of the rest. It even has four arms. but the interesting thing about it is that on each of those arms lies what appears to be a small cannon. The blue colored beetle-bot looks up at you quickly as it notices your staring.

> “Ah, right, I’m Hapso. I’m a Shooter-class bot, yeah. I, uh...shoot things. Pretty much. I’m pretty nimble, or at least I try to be, but, uh...these arms aren’t exactly, y’know. Heavy duty. That and I’m kinda not the best with close range anyway. But, hey, you need fire support, I'm your bot! Four guns, two more than most bots have! Real good at that, yeah! If I need to, i think kind of overclock to really give someone a bad day.”

Hm. Interesting.

> “And don’t forget about me, please!”

Hm? You turn far to the left, to see the thought that was over looking everyone else. you had kind of wrote it off considering that it appeared to be of a medical sort, considering that it was more or less a robot maid. Even had the hat and everything and a nice pastel pink and white color scheme.

> “I’m Prima, terribly sorry! I am a Support-class Minibot, as you likely have presumed, but I should also mention that I am capable of rapid diagnosis of structural weak points and anomalies in Minibot systems! That, combined with my Close Range Automated Defensive System and advanced program execution algorithms allow me to react to and disable aggressive robots with precision!”

Wow. She said all of that in a hurry, like she was worried about wasting your time.

King has been quiet throughout all of this simply nodding at each one of them in turn. You're kind of surprised he didn't say anything at their assessment of their weaknesses, but you suppose that all things considered, it's better to know what those weaknesses are and prepare for them instead of pretending they don't exist. “So,” He says. “Which do you choose?”

Fine we do just some breaking and eentering and tie the old man and the kid if they try to stop us.
>>
>>2302963
>>2302961
So . . . . can we drive people mad by possessing them? Or make people seem to be a danger to themselves? Or that they're going senile and misplacing things?

Can we gaslight an old man into being committed in a locked down care facility, his ramblings of hidden powers written off as early onset dementia?

No. No because we also share the body so Lori would also feel the damage. But we can make a man walk the plank or jump from a high altitude. But we will need to suppress the user willpower. We could make it look like the old man is suffering from sleep walking.

Why not just slip into his mind while he's cooking and have him accidentally start the fire.

>>

We buy it for a reasonable price as a collectors item, so that the family can afford the crushing cost of Grandpas healthcare.

>>
>>2305157
A short run is a run. Besides if we don't get into to many shadowruns we may end up the attack to the repair shop today!
>>
>>2302735
Hmmm... You suppose if that this were Miranda going on this job, she’d probably pick something extremely practical, like Hapso, because he’s long-range. It really does make sense, and by all accounts you can't say that the idea didn't go through your head either.

But Prima’s WAY TOO CUUUUTE. She’s got a little metal bow-thing on the side of her head and it makes her look adooorable! “Prima, I request your services! Join me in this undertaking!” You stretch you hand out, and she takes it daintily, even doing a little courtesy at the end.

The urge to squee is strong.

The other bots kind of grumble, Thundercat just kind of shrugs, but they don't say anything opposing your decision. Mr. King just raises an eyebrow, likely inwardly questioning your choice, but he doesn’t disapprove either. “Very well,” the rich man says airly. “Let’s get you to the briefing room.”

The two of you salute, and Prima has to stop herself from giggling a bit.

Dunno, think you might like this one.

The ‘briefing room’ with purple and gold chairs, tables, and a plethora of pictures featuring the man himself. There's even a statue of him in one corner, and you have to admit this guy definitely seems to have a high opinion of himself. “Now, I don’t much concern myself with the common rabble, ESPECIALLY Kanzaki...so I'm afraid I can't really tell you much more than where the shack of a store is. However, that's something of the point, isn't it?” He smiles thinly at that little remark as he presses a button underneath the table, and the middle of it folds out to reveal some sort of holographic projector. A keyboard then flips out under the head of the table, and he walks around to it and quickly types something in. The image changes to a large map, with a red dot near the top. It then zooms in to the southern half, then on a street, and quickly focuses in on one building in particular, with a red targeting symbol around it.

You have to admit, it's... Actually not really all that impressive looking. A real basic brick store, with a simple sign out in the front that says ‘Kanzaki Bot Services’, the red paint is chipping faded away in places, and the whole store itself seems like it's been around for quite some time.
“I trust you had the good sense to bring along some of your own tools? I’m not so foolish as to grant you anything that could be traced back to me.”

Honestly, if it was a simple as that, you wouldn't need anything in particular that you didn’t have already. Better safe than sorry, true, but even then…

“Have you no spare resources, then?” You ask. “Flares, cutting tools? Perhaps devices to allow my egress into secure areas easier?”

“There's a certain irony in someone with your name asking for tools such as flares,” he notes. “But perhaps I can spare a few...simple objects, yes. However, these will be granted only after you complete my little trial. If you can't get in such a place without them, then I don't see you being able to access much heavier defended areas WITH them.”

Ugh, what a cheapskate. “I completely understand! Fear not, my skill will be more than adequate!” At least you can pose about it.

“Hmph. Well, then, allow me to show me to your -potential- quarters. This way.” He turns to walk away again, and you follow, Prima trailing at your heels.

You get a quick overview of the rest of the places that you were probably going to have access to- or at least the ones that King felt like showing you, anyway. There's a rather large training duel area for Minibots, a field that reminds you more of a hockey rink than anything else, only with less lines and no goals- but the same high walls and even a sitting area for bots waiting their turn. There's also an entertainment area and locker room, along with the usual things such as showers and whatnot.

Before much longer, though, it's evening, and time to get to work. “I expect that arm in my hands by morning,” King says, and his tone brooks no argument. “I trust you remember where the shop is located.” Fortunately, you’d been allowed a second, more thorough look at the holographic map, and you had a pretty good idea of the general location it was in. “Now, get going!”

Man, this guy’s cranky.

Fortunately, travel throughout the brightly colored, high skyscrapered city is...well, it’s not completely easy- you're not nearly as athletic as ‘Randa or Izumi, but you can still jump pretty darn well, and most of the people on the streets seem to be engrossed in their own business. Prima, for her part, was fairly shocked when you grabbed her up (she’s lighter than you think she'd be…) and starting leaping. “I-I was not aware humans were capable of performing to these parameters! Perhaps I should reassess my calculations!”

You just laugh, and continue on.

Before long, the moon still fresh in the sky, you reach a familiar street, and you can see that a few blocks down is the simple building that is Kanzuki Bot Services, faded paint and everything. There’s even what seems to be bot frames in the window, to entice passersby. However, the lights are on, and yet you can't see anyone inside or nearby- for all intent and purposes, it seems like a simple convenience store on a slow street. As you approach a bit closer, you notice there DOES seem to be some camera system.

“Madam, I would suggest caution- even small businesses such as this are expected to have alarm systems designed to immediately alert the authorities. Should we cause too much damage or tarry too long, we may attract undue attention!”

Yeah, clearly. The question, though, how to get in…

You let yourself them all over that one for a few more moments, until you see the lights turn off- without anyone leaving.

...Well, then.

Oh, bah. They might be doing a few last-minute checks or something. Maybe some inventory in a back room, who knows. You can hang out for a bit longer, make sure no one’s around to risk any complications…

...Yeah, doesn't seem like anyone’s coming out. At least not anytime soon; it’’s been at least an hour. Well, too bad for them. You stand up proudly, your suit shimmering even in this dim light. “Prima!”

“Yes, ma’am!?” She’s going to have to get used to you speaking up quickly- there’s no time to dawdle! “We begin our approach!”

“Well, technically I must correct you in that we’ve been approaching since we left home, and at the moment-” Boring!

“We move!” The robot is scooped, and you are off! It takes naught but two mighty leaps to reach the front door of the simple store, and indeed you see that there’s a bit of space around it, to allow for a tiny back lot, it seems, but little besides a basic magnetic lock to prevent your bypassing-

“Miss, if you would please let me down!?” Ah, right. Seriously, she's a light thing! “Thank you! Now, if you don’t mind, I must inform you that should we attempt to force entry, it is highly likely that we will face on-site resistance due to the lack of exiting personnel!”

“I was aware of that,” you note.

“Apologies, I felt it pertinent to issue a reminder.” Geez, this little thing is so chatty…you kinda like it.

> “Welp, if we’re on the clock, no reason to dally!” You’ll just be quick about it. PUNCH

“Prima, do you have a way to jimmy the lock?” It would be nice to just punch it, but you want to make your appearance something a bit more grandiose. “This device appears electromagnetic in nature.”

In response, Prima simply tilts her head up to the locking question, and squints. As you look a little bit closer into her pupil-less eyes, you notice that there seems to be a sort of very dim flashing going on behind them as she makes calculations. It only takes a few seconds, and she soon turns to you with a slight nod and a shift in her expression that tells you she's smiling. “Yes, I believe I can disable this device temporarily, should I be able to reach its wiring!”

“Excellent!” taking one last look up and down the street to make sure that no one is around, you quickly lift the bot up to balance on your shoulders, and it seems like she takes only a couple of seconds to reach for the rectangular source and, with surprising strength, pry it open. A few more seconds to fiddle with the innards of the device, and she then looks down to you with that same mouthless smile. “Complete!”

“Fabulous!” Sure enough, after that little bit of work you're able to enter with no issues.

The inside of the shop isn't any more impressive than the outside, with what seems to be a whole lot of old common parts for sale in various, seemingly random areas on shelves- there's also a few other odd things such as a small drink vending machine and something that resembles a refrigerator, though you don't think it is. There's a short hallway going further back into the building that is just as dark as the main room, too.

“My,” Prima notes in a lowered voice- good to see that she realized the situation. “There are quite a number of useful parts here, even if none are quite on the scale of what Mr. King has to offer…

“Don’t worry, old man. Just goin’ to catch my breath.” Hm? What was that? It had a similar robotic tone to your own partner...

“You don’t breathe!” Is the reply, and this one sounds far more human- clearly the ‘old man’ the first referred to. A bout of mutual laughter follows, and you hear a door open. “I’ll be ‘round the back!” It closes, and you hear slow, metal footsteps walking away from you.

“...A Minibot- in Standby Mode.” Prima says even quieter- you find yourself having to boost your hearing in order to understand her through your helmet. “This is a dangerous situation.”

“It is?” You ask as you hear the back door open.

“Er, for him, I mean,” she clarifies. “It takes some moments for a Minibot in Standby Mode to adjust to Combat Ready. It is unable to use a vast majority of his skills in Standby Mode. Are you not aware?”

Well, NOW you were. And this presented a golden opportunity…

“To me!” Not that she was further than a couple inches behind you. “We will silence this potential interloper before he can affect our intentions!”

“Yes, ma’am!” And you can see something flashing in her eyes again; but this time you can see a physical change. The little bow on her head shifts apart to form something more akin to horns, her hands gain sharpened, blade ‘nails’, and you can see her metal ‘skirt’ extend slightly and gain a couple of more ridges- as well as sharp protrusions coming out of the bottom. She also games something around the edges of her mouth that close up- for what reason you’re not sure, but it ends up looking like a surgical mask. Might just be for style points.

On the whole, she does look a deal more intimidating. “I am prepared.” Her voice is lower, smoother- and yet a whole lot more threatening because of it.

You carefully make to move cautiously past the closed-door that the robot came out of, and fortunately the back door is standard. You carefully twist the handle, and slowly open the door, looking out of it as it’s cracked open to make sure of the situation.

The bot is yellow and black colored, with a very humanoid body, but with a head that resembles a bumblebee. Its body is thickly fortified at the bottom, with its legs being rather armored even in its default state. It's arms don't seem to have any obvious weaponry, but you know you can't tell that as it is now, that’s just to not be a threat. Off of your limited guess, it’s probably a Bruiser or Balanced-type…

...But whatever it is, it's punching the wall- relatively ineffectively, too. Seems to be more of a way to let out aggression than any kind of actual training…

“The time is now,” Prima mutters ominously. You can’t agree more…

(Alright, time for battle tutorial! Yes, I'm kinda hoping for something different for THIS world...)

>Surgical Strike: Pick a Limb (Left/Right Leg or Arm, Head), and Prima will attempt to deliver a powerful blow towards that limb’s joints, calculated for maximum damage. Upon success, a second strike towards that area will have an increased chance to hit and deal extra damage, or remove the limb entirely.

>Emergency Reboot: Prima will undergo an emergency subsystems reboot that will reset her battle systems to optimum, but it may leave her open for a moment. Will clear any non-physical disabling techniques such as -Scrambled-, -Interference-, etc.

>Total System Scan: Prima deep scans her opponent, determining any structural weakpoints and possible irregularities in their cpu system that may result in them being more susceptible to certain strategies. She must keep them in her line of sight, but the scan does not need to be completed in one attempt.

>System Overclock: Prima overclocks her battle systems to increase her capabilities temporarily. (Best of 5 dice, as opposed to 3) However, this causes frame stress and carries risk of sending her into -Overheating- (Make a roll of 4d10, roll numbers determines what parts of her are overheating, which means using them more risks a following ‘self-damage’ roll.)

“Go for the head! Surgical strike!” You announce gamely as you throw the door open and rush in- the poor bot barely gets a chance to turn around as you lunge forward with a punch to the chestplate, causing him to double over before the clawed hand of Prima quickly palms him; you’re actually pretty impressed at the speed she hit. She doesn’t stop there, either, using her momentum to shove him into the brick wall with a vicious crunch, slamming him twice against the cracking brick then dragging him along the wall, making a real nice mess of his finish before hurling him with a snap of her wrist against the side of a nearby dumpster. The impact causes the bin to shudder, and for a second he just sits there slumped over, optics closed.

“...” Prima merely continues glaring at him “Systems are still operational. Get up.”

You're not very much surprised when he does- but you are surprised when the area around his mouth is shut off much like Prima’s, forming a face mask around his baby blue eyes that make him look much more intimidating than before. His arms and torso are suddenly even thicker thanks to unfolding steel plates, and a blade that was clearly embedded in his right forearm is unsheathed, as a cannon that was in his left forearm is revealed as well. “Dunno who you two are…but you just made a big mistake!” He rushes you both, and the fight is joined again.

Well, on the whole it seems like Prima’s pretty much got ahold of all the close-up issues, and that just gives you a chance to LOOK AWESOME. Right on! “Continue the onslaught!”

“Yes ma’am!” and with a grinding clash of metal, she meets him halfway, thrusting her arm as he tries to duck out of the way of her attempted stab, his retaliatory slice just barely dodged, causing a scrape on her chest plate as she locks horns with him again, doing her best to keep that blade away from herself.

Well, that won’t do! Hopefully it’ll buff out...ah, but in the meantime! A little twist of the hips, little thrust of the hands, and you send out shower of of sparkling miniature bolts flowing around Prima as your fabolous stance is struck. The first few shower him, and they spark like firecrackers going off, the pinging of impacts across his body ringing out in the back lot, cause him to lose his focus- if only for a moment enough to allow Prima the upper hand, allowing her to deliver another couple of fingertip stabs to his neck area.

He lets out a yelp of concerns and quickly raises a heavy plated boot- Prima has the presence of mind to quickly withdraw before he can plant it in her robotic sternum- and the two are distanced yet again. You have to admit, despite the numerous pockmarks on his body now, he hasn't seemed to slow a step yet, and-

Oh. Oh wait he’s aiming that cannon at you you should probably get out of the way really quickly YES.

Your dive was actually somewhat graceful, you like to think. Even if your landing wasn't. You don't have time to worry about that though, as you quickly lift yourself up. Not just because because he could try to follow up with more shots, but because those shots were LOUD. Loud wasn’t good. Loud meant people got suspicious.

>Try to withdraw from the fight early. You’re on a job! You can fight him later!
> “Prima! Keep him busy!” If she can handle the smash, you can handle the grab.
>You might as well try to see this through- he can’t be allowed to try and follow you!

“Prima! Keep him busy!” You’re not gonna waste time here- not when there was thievery to do! That, and she seems to be handling herself pretty well, so you're not going to worry about her at the very least for the short-term. She should be able to handle this, right?

“Yes, ma’am!” She barely has time to get it out before the angry bot tries to turn on you, but it’s quickly interrupted by her latching onto it as it tries to jump towards you, dragging it backwards in what would be a vicious-looking chokehold if they weren’t robots. Actually, it's kind of vicious-looking regardless.

Sure, she’s got this.

It doesn't take you long to jolt down the hallway again, and, yeah, you're going to have to figure out if the person in here can-

Before you can finish your sentence, the doors opened itself, and you see an old man clad in a simple white shirt, in overalls and a short, gray beard. He seems to have something in his hand- some sort of half-finished mechanical device. Fortunately, he seems completely stunned by your presence, as you kinda hoped. Motes to donuts this is old man Kanzaki, though...which means he probably knows where the Geo-Blaster is.

“W-what on earth…?”

>Just knock him out and search the place yourself. You’re not that helpless, and there’s only so many places it could be if it’s here...

Okay, where's your taser, or something else you can use to knock this guy out- ah, right- some sort of...what, actual hammerspace? Oh, wait, no, thaaaat’s what the pauldrons are for. Go figure. Oh wait, no no-

“I’m afraid I can't let you go,” you say as you grab the fleeing man by a trailing arm and drag him close. “For I cannot let you alert the authorities before I get what I came for, my unfortunately, frail man!”

“Wait, no, please- auughhahgha!” That that last bit was due to the shocking. Because you shocked him. His spasms were funny though. And you think he wet himself- always a good laugh. Now, you just need to find what you came here for, and you best bet was that it was somewhere in that room that he came from. Not like there’s a whole lot else to choose from…

The room reminds you of a workshop more than anything else, it's clearly where the man does his own private tinkering. There's a workbench with a number of uncompleted parts, a very large shelf with tools, and several large cabinets that, judging by the one that's open, seem to have potpourri of whatever he could find that relates. Mostly more parts.

It takes you a few minutes of frantically tossing things around, and frankly every minute that it takes is one that your concern grows. Where the heck could something that's supposed to be a robot part be if not here? As a matter of fact, you just realize that you're not entirely certain what it’s supposed to look like. You have a good idea, considering that it's supposed to be some sort of extremely rare part, but still.

Okay, okay. Think. If you were an old man with a rare part that you didn't want anyone else to have, where would you hide it and how? How…?

And then in a flash, it hits you, and you start rifling through his large shelves. You just need to find the right one, the one that looks a little bit bigger than it should be...aha!

cont.
>>
>>2308792
Simple, but effective. A back to one of the large shelves that, to an ordinary person, would seem absolutely normal. But to someone like you? It's pretty blatantly a fake back. You reach back, and stick your hand in to feel something large and bumpy around your fingers. When you pull it out?

It’s a bot arm, humanoid in design, with large, fat, flat fingers and a wide forearm area- a gauntlet more than anything else. Just by looking at it. Even so, already you can tell that this one is a bit different than the norm. It's a gold yellow, almost matching the color of the bot outside, and has a strange white gem inside of it that glows with a power you can appreciate- this has GOT to be the Geo-Breaker. Or was it Blaster? Buster? Whatever. Shame you can’t actually use the thing. Now you just need to-

YO, OLD MAN?” Aw, nuts. “YOU OK-KAY?!” Shoot. His voice wobbles a bit- what happened to Prima, though? Aw, nuts, aw crap...Ah! No, no. Things are far from ruined, Lorelei. This is still entirely doable.

Yeah, no. You’ve got the objective, time to regroup and get the heck out of there. As soon as you hear the footsteps close in, you immediately turn and bolt out- only to feel an impact against your side slam you against the wall- the side that had the part tucked under it. “H-Hey! Don’t think you can-”

No, you’re thinking you can really hard. Another shot comes behind you, and this one you take on the square of your back, the burning sensation shooting up your spine in a horrible feeling and causing you to stumble a bit more before you throw open the door and quickly slam it behind you.

You don't immediately see Prima, and that worries you; are you going to hav-

“M-m-m-miss…” Oooh dear. “I haaaavveee rrrregret-regrettably performed substANdardly I hope-hope-hope you can-” No time for apologies, gather up the body, her bow is over there, gotta get that, oh, that's part of her arm over there, ouch. She’s still standing at least, mostly intact, so that’s a plus, but under the arm she goes, there we are…

*Crash* Haha, yeah, no. You’re outta here.

You’re not normally a long leaper- but you can do well enough- pain’s just going to have to take a rain check.

...Sweet motes this is going to sting in the morning, though. Okay, so it wasn't as glamorous as you'd hoped. But, you got the part! Call that a success any day!

>And that'll do it for tonight. I apologize if the mechanics were disdainful to some- I know some folk don't like opposed rolls, and, if anything I can tell you that I don't plan to use a 'beat this or fail' system of opposed rolls. It's more a 'potency' thing. And I STILL don't do crit. So the 100 was great, but the 71 you guys got allowed Prima to mitigate the majority of it. There'll also be systems that allow you to add to rolls that will most likely be explored in the near future.

I'm trying to not make this system horribly oppressive, while still allowing for desperate situations.

To be fair we shouldn't expect that a small time store bot, would be able to deal with a bot created by a megacorp as the one that king controls.

But then we were in a tsmall schedule maybe we shouldn't have confronted the bot? But i thing with the advantage we had we could have managed the incapacitate it. Even so the thing just took moderate damage after both of us and our bot manage to lend a hit.

>>
>>2309177
Astral projection is mana intensive to cast and maintain, and Lori has less to begin with.

Well. Upon your return back to base, which required you to carefully approach a side door that seem to be mostly for deliveries , you'd been met with a number of those uniformed individuals, and immediately been taken to see Mr. King in his meeting room. The damaged Prima had requested to return to Standby mode, which you granted, and as of now her eyes were dim. She hadn't said anything at all on the elevator ride up.

It seems that the uniformed individuals were engineers, and they’d done a quick check up on Prima just to make sure that she was still functional. After making sure she was, they insisted on taking her with them for repairs, which you couldn’t exactly say no to. That left you alone with the man himself.

As you sit down, Mr. King seems relatively non-plussed, although you do notice his eyes light up a little bit when you present the Geo-Breaker to him. “Well, well. So you managed to get it. I must admit, I’m rather pleased. Seems like your boasting wasn’t entirely fallacious after all.” He hold his hand, and you relinquish the object- he’s quick to turn it over, inspecting it… and his face morph into a small frown. “Hmph. Seems there’s a bit of damage to it- although nothing unrepairable, this will take precious time. Bah.” He then looks up at you. “I take it you met with resistance? I heard nothing about any police confrontation. Don't tell me that old man actually had some sort of defenses in place?” He seems disappointed, but curious at the same time.

“Bah, t’was no true problem!” You say grandly. “Merely some unexpected resistance- a mild underestimation that, quite clearly, wasn’t severe enough to cause us great issue. Why, Prima was capable of delaying the pest without my interference- that act of bravery was more than enough to allow me to acquire the part! She is quite willing to aid, that one.”

“Mmm. Yes.” He steeples his fingers, clearly in thought. “That IS the function of a support Minibot. They’re designed for dual battles, not solo combat, after all.” Well, you could have guessed that, but it's good for confirmation. “I suppose I cannot be too cross- she DID, after all, allow for the completion of the mission, if what you state is accurate. Still, I would very much like to know exactly what bot caused this. Prima was designed to be hardier than she appears.” Was she? Huh. Interesting. “I’ll have to get her visual data later. Depending on what I see, she may have to be...adjusted. As for now,” and here he stands up, impassive look on his face yet again. “You have succeeded in my little test. Congratulations.”

“Ohoh! The pleasure was mine!” You insist as you get up, striking as diva a pose as you can- crossed legs, a little swivel of the shoulders, there’s the stuff…

“Mm.” Gah, hard crowd. “I’ll see to your supplies. You are to remain in this city until I call you. The time must be ripe for my acquisition, and that isn’t quite yet. Until then, I care not what you do, so long as you answer when I call.” Here, he fishes something out of his breast pocket. It seems to be like a small smart watch. “This will allow you contact with me- although I of course suggest that you are out of the public eye when you answer. Don't call me unless it's extremely important. You can also contact various other departments in the building if necessary, such as the Repair Ward, which is where Prima will likely be- you’ll see a list when you check it. Not to mention, it has a few other features such as a database of known Minibot frames and parts. Any questions?”

“Naught but a few!” You state. There's a few basic things that you probably could use. “I must inquire as to an allowance of funds to allow my purchase of food and goods necessary to daily life! As well as sleeping accommodations!” Phew, big words.

“You mean an allowance?” He inquires. You nod. He frowns, but after a moment he has a second lien odds. “Hm. I suppose I could set up an account for you. It would be in for a false name of course, but I don't see much of an issue with that, so long as you don't get to that gregarious with any purchases you make. As for sleeping accommodations, we have private quarters in the building that are fully furnished. I'll set you up in one of those.”

Oh, huh. That was actually kinda nice of him. “Excellent! If you don’t mind, i would also like to know something particularly important to me. The status of the robots in your ‘Zero Fatalities’ rider.”

“Oh?” at this, he lifts an eyebrow. “What precisely do you mean by that?”

“If their destruction would be considered a violation of that, and…” and POSE is what. “What lengths am I allowed to go?”

“Ah.” He nods in understanding. “Well, to be truthful, I had mostly restricted that to humans only. But every bot has an AI Core- the primary chip that houses personalities, memory, and active learning. Destroying that would be tantamount to death. However, it is designed to be very heavily guarded, and it is almost always the most protected point in a Minibot’s frame. Intentionally destroying it would be very difficult. I would prefer you didn't go around eliminating Minibot AI Cores, if only to keep from getting noticed. If one or two fall, however...well, so be it.”

“I’ll make certain, have no doubt of that!” you agree. Pretty open of him. “Then I have but one question remaining- where, precisely, would I go to witness or participate in battles?”

“Aside from our own training facilities? There are a number of training gyms around the city, but the only two worth my attention would be the Red Dragon Gym and the X-Force Gym, both on the western end of the city. The teams there are...slightly above average, and you may actually learn a novel trick or two there. If you're looking to participate in your down time, then I suppose I have no concern with that, but you'll need to obtain another Minibot, or request a different shell on Prima. Go to the Repair Ward if you want either and ask them yourself. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m rather busy- your account will be open shortly, and your K-Com will notify you.”

He walks out without another word, and you find yourself frowning underneath your helmet. Geez, this guy…

No, yeah, best to see how Prima is doing. Especially after you talked her up like that. Fortunately, it seems like there's signs that point out to where the Repair Ward is. It doesn't take you too long to find it; the place is very white and clean like a hospital floor, and you notice that there seem to be a lot of dismembered or otherwise busted up Minibots here, most laying on what seemed to be long tables, with a number of various testing apparati nearby.

Fortunately, it doesn't take you very long to find her, still ‘unconscious’ for lack of a better word. She's got a couple engineers around her, and from what you can tell they're working on the arm that was mangled. Nearly half of that got taken off, and even now you can still see the underlying twisted metal, not to mention the various other scratches, dents, and pockmarks that she has.

“We’ve copied the audio-visual memory of the last night from her database, to look for any issues or areas for improvement, on Mr. King's orders,” one of the engineers speaks up as he sees you approaching. “As for physical repairs, she should be fine in a couple of days. We work fast, and we have basic shell pieces for her here- The issue is that her frame’s taken damage, and that's going to require some work to fix up.” Right...that sounds decent enough.

>Ask them about adjusting her shell pieces so she can go outside with you in disguise.

>>
>>2312797
But stealing the exodia parts is our mission; We will get out after we do it. What is implied right now is to raise our notoriety and alert everyone that someone is stealing high valued parts. That will make our job considerably harder, and considering that we suck at making plans, we don´t really need things to get more difficult.
>>
>>2311640
Hey we weren't supposed to fight during the first mission but it turned out that happened. So if there's the possibility of a fight, I'd like to have a numeric advantage.

That being said, more robots = more help. We could send one to cause a distraction then run away while Prima scans and acts as lookout and we sneak in and steal.

Or we could damage one so that they see it and take it in, so it can help us get in too.

“She was quite valuable on the job, and I’d hoped to be able to, ah, take her out on the town!” you say, looking over the sheared metal that was her arm. “So! I was wondering if you’d be able to adjust her shell pieces- make her unrecognizable to any plebeians!”

The engineers all look at each other for a couple of seconds, but then they nod as one. “Sure, we can do that,” the head engineer explains. “We've got a couple of shell pieces that we should be able to repaint and do some basic bodywork to, but they’ll still fit her frame.” Oh, that’s good to know. “In the meantime, what are you going to do?”

Hm... That's actually a pretty good question. Although, considering that this was a bot fighting town, and you didn't have any bots at the moment...well, you suppose that it would probably be an idea to at the very least either purchase one of your own, or take one of King’s...bah, you’ll make that decision in the morning. Right now, you need to take a nap. Gotta remember where the sleeping quarters are…

It was dark out, aside from one or two street lights, so hopefully those two won’t recognize you. You’ll worry about clothes later, though- one of the things that you've come to learn is that a lot of times people in high-stress situations aren't even sure of themselves when it comes to remembering what someone looks like. They try to remember the major things, and most of those things are usually in the face area, and hands. So, a quick removal of your helmet, the fancy bangles, and the pauldrons of course. With that, you’re fairly certain that even though some people might give you a second look, they’d probably just think you were fashion-forward.

Now you just need to make sure to get your allowance... not that you're entirely sure with a form of that will take. All you know is that he said he would set up an account for you…

It takes you a bit to actually find him, and it involves some asking around, but when you approach him at his massive office desk, he doesn't seem at all surprised to see you. “Hello. I take it you’re asking after your miscellaneous budget?”

You nod, and before you can say anything else he tosses a small piece of plastic at you- a credit card, you realize, as you snatch out of the air. The name ‘Aya M. Iwako’ gleams in golden colors. “That’s yours, it has an upper limit of 500,000, and that’s just to be secure. Don’t get too greedy, or I’ll be cross.” The last bit he says with a narrowing of his eyes. “Anything else?”

“None!” And you nearly skip out of the room. A whole damn CREDIT CARD? Oh, ABSOLUTELY yes.

Now, with your hair flowing freely in the breeze, it's just a matter of where to go. Your little watch has a whole GPS system in it, and you merely need to decide where you want to go to find your new ‘partner’…

>Somewhere cheap and not very noticeable, just in case. You’d probably find some cheaper bot, but that’d just make them more loyal, you think.
>Eh, somewhere with middling quality. You want a bot that at least has some structural standards, but not too much to worry about.
>You got cash, why not use it? You might not be using a King Industries bot, but you still deserve no less than top of the line!

Something relatively average is fine, all things considered. As much as you would like to splurge a bit, you don't want to be making too many big waves just yet. Especially not without anyone to back you up at the moment.

There's a decent number of mid-sized sellers, most of them more offering frames than shells- presumably that's where most of the big customization comes in. Not exactly sure how you supposed to customize it yourself, but you talk to a few folks here and there, (several entranced by your outfit) and it seems like a lot of it is pretty plug-and-play, at least in regards to shells. Nothing that should take you too long to figure out.

Ultimately, you end up at a place that seems to exclusively deal in Minibots called ‘Code Source’. It's a two-floor shop that has a number of unactivated frames and shells on display, and you can see a massive variety of Minibots, far beyond what you saw at Mr. King’s- although you have no doubt he has just as wide a variety. A majority of these are ‘premade’, that is, they already have the shells preinstalled.

Now, it's just a matter of what you want to decide on… ah, you both love and hate this part of shopping! Making the decisions, the final judgement call on what’s worth your hard earned money...even if it wasn’t your money. Eventually, though, it comes down to three (or at least, that’s what you said you’d limit yourself to…)

One of them reminds you of a miniature dragon standing upright. It's wings are less wings, and more spines that extend to the left and right of its body, and its neck and snout are much smaller than a normal dragon’s neck. Its torso and arms are also fairly humanoid, but its scale, multi-layered green shell makes it seem rather ferocious. It’s nameplate calls it ‘Egron’, and it’s a Shooter-class.

The second is a rather humanoid body, painted a dark blue and silver. This one has a high crowned head, making it look like he's wearing some sort of captains hat, and the rest of him very much has the look of a naval officer with a flared jacket. This one’s name is ‘Jago’, and it’s a Bruiser-class.

The third is something a bit different, in that it seems to be some sort of snake-like Minibot; a further look reveals long wires her hair, and she strikes you as some sort of gorgon-esque design, despite the not-quite humanoid face. Of course, instead of legs it has a tail, long and serrated in places, and a wicked looking and slightly elongated set of arms. It’s name is apparently ‘Vespica’, and it’s a Speed-class Minibot.

Uggh...which to choose, which to choo- wait, what’s that tapping on your shoulder.

Hm? You turn around, already ready to berate them. “Sorry, I was just about to take my pic…”

>Egron, the Shooter-class Dragon Minibot.

In front of you is a young, lanky boy, probably around your (physical) age, with swept back hair and freckles who seems to be staring at you in a bit of curiosity and awe. Got a simple shirt and slacks on, and a vest with a strange, large buckled belt around his waist as well. His eyes meet your eyes, and immediately he goes a touch slack-jawed before his posture shifts into something more ‘professional’ and ‘suave’- if his sudden grin is anything to go by. “Weelll, hello there!” Oh, this kid is just PRECIOUS. “I couldn’t help but notice such a lovely flower like yourself from all the way over here; I was wondering if perhaps you’d needed any help in making a selection- I’m a bit of a Minibot expert, aheheh, so…”

Behind him, you notice a pair of kids, one a boy. He’s shorter, but also with spiky hair, and a small red jacket with a black shirt underneath with a diamond star shape. Some baggy jean shorts complete the look. The other one is a girl, a short haired brunette, clad in a simple blue skirt and white blouse combination, although she has a nice little heart locket around her neck.

They’re both facepalming. As for the kid…he’s still going. “So, really, don’t be afraid to…”

“Oh, well!” There’s so much you could do with this kid, you think, as you cut him off. “I’d just made my choice!” As you pick up the salty-looking sailorbot’s box, you see him affect a pose of deep contemplation. It needs work.

Still, he nods in slow approval, as though running through all the pros and cons in his head. “Oho, I see! Jago, Bruiser-class bot.” Obviously. “Very good with keeping bots from moving like they want, especially this variant- see the code on the side of the casing?” He points to one side, and sure enough there’s the code ‘CN-3’. Huh. “That tells a little bit more about the bot to anyone ‘in the know’. OH, he did the finger quotes, wow! “So that there Jago frame is a bit sturdier than most, but is slightly less agile. Still, that frame works best with a Gale Hook Arm, if you have the money to get one. Lets him stay up close and personal.” Huh. You don’t know if his information’s accurate or not, but he seems real interested in your business…

“Oh, okay,” you say dismissively as the big question on your mind comes to the forefront. “Aaaand just...who are you, again?”

“Oh, how rude of me!” He chuckles airily and hold his hand out, clearly expecting you to take it. “I’m Tooru, and it’s quite the pleasure! They call me the Minibot Mastermind!”

“More like Mind-LESS,” you can hear the other boy mutter as he walks up to the both of you. He places a hand on Tooru’s shoulder- causing the boy to bark a yelp that reminds you of a scared puppy. “Seriously, we need to get a move on! Nia’s already done her shopping, and I’ve found what I wanted. Gramps needs us back.”

The would-be pickup artist simply gives his friend a long-suffering sigh. “Kyo, please. I'll be right there! I was just talking to this...lovely lass right here, giving her a couple of pointers about her first Minibot. In fact, I was thinking about maybe showing her a few tricks! You wouldn’t say no to someone who just wants to know more about Minibots, would you, Kanzaki?” He breaks out the puppy dog eyes for this one, and Nia, the girl, simply gives a small chuckle.

Hm...so, he wanted to show you the ropes, then? That could be pretty damn useful. Not sure if these others would want to come along with him though, since it seems like they're trying to get-

Wait. Kanzaki? ...Well, blah, no, no way that’s…

...Y’know what, nevermind, sure, you can roll with that. It happens. Lucky is as lucky does! Okay, so now… the question is, what to do from here. Maybe you can convince him to ditch them and get yourself deep in his good graces- or even ask tag along to the shop, risky as that might be. Then again, keeping a distance from them is probably a good idea, too…

Really, it doesn't take you much to figure out a plan of action from here. Especially if these three are as close as they seem to be. “Oh, that’d be a terrible shame- you seem so smart about all of this!” You flutter your lashes just a bit. “I was starting to hope I might be able to spend more time with you.”

The looks on the other two’s faces are priceless. Both of their jaws drop like rocks, and they look GOBSMACKED at what you just said. Wow, this kid doesn’t usually get ANY play? Well, makes sense. All the more reason to have some fun with this!

Tooru, for his part, looks freakin’ ecstatic, and motions to you wordlessly in a ‘see what I mean?’ manner. “She’s just a newbie that needs someone who knows what they’re doing to guide her, and I’m willing to be that someone!” He proclaims proudly, like he's doing a great public service. Yeah, sure.

“I...uh, miss, do you really need help?” Nia asks. Her eyes keep flicking back from you to him, clearly wanting to say more than she is. “Maybe we can point you towards someone…”

“Oh, no, no,” you insist, scooting a little bit closer to Tooru as you do. “He seems nice! I think a guy as eager as this would be a really good teacher!” You can visibly see Tooru puff up at the praise, and even puff his chest out a bit.

Kyo just cocks a very confused eyebrow. “Uhh...okay, lady- actually, what’s your name?” Oh. That's actually pretty good question. Uhh…

“Himawari,” you decide. Sounds like a fitting name for the location, should work fine. “A pleasure.”

“Right, yeah, name’s Kyo, probably heard him say it…” He scratches the back of his head in slight nervousness. “Anywho, uh...hm. I mean, I'd like to help, but I got a thing to do with my grandpa. I guess if you want to, Tooru, but you’ll be back, right?”

“No problem!” Tooru says with a wave of his hand. “It’ll only be a couple hours.”

The face Kyo makes is...skeptical, to say the least. But he nods. “Alriiiight...just...if you end up being late, I'll call you. See ya around, Tooru.” The two of them leave, Nia giving a wane ‘good luck…’ before they leave.

“Fantastic!” Man, he seems excited. “Now, let’s get outta here. I need to get Moxer- that’s my bot, you’ll love ‘im- and we’ll head to a nice little place of mine where we can be alone...for practice, I mean!”

That sounds lovely,” you respond with a titter. As for you...

As tempting as it would be to build his hopes up and then dash them against the rocks just to see the reaction (it usually results in some really funny faces), you ARE new to this whole battling thing. It’d be good to have someone even a little bit experienced to tell you the ropes. So, that's going to be what you're going to focus on for the time being.

He picks up a number of goods, mostly various Minibot repair items, from the look of it. “I always do my best to make sure Moxer looks his best- same as me, of course,” he says with a grin as you check out- you’d decided to take his earlier advice and buy the arm part called the ‘Gale Hook’- it was a pretty stereotypical looking pirate hook, and it seemed to be intended to be worn by Minibot of Jago’s type. “But you clearly know how to keep yourself looking good.” He throws a wink your way before turning back, and you’re on your way.

As you both exit the store, you're both immediately accosted by a Minibot. This one is a burnt orange color, and seems to have a wide face plate, kind of like a hammerhead shark, or maybe a stingray. Its optics are larger than most, too. Although, you can quickly see why- on one of his arms seems to be a mini gatling gun, and the other, an oversized fist with something resembling a tower shield. “This here’s Moxer! He’s my best bud! Well, best bud not named Kyo.”

“Greetings.” The tone is formal, powerful, and professional. “Who are you?” And blunt, apparently.

“This is Himawari, and she’s gonna be learning the ins-and-outs of battling from yours truly!” Tooru announces proudly.

“Ah. ...Interesting,” he says casually.

You try to ask what he meant by that, but he doesn't really respond to you all throughout the walk.

Eventually, the lot of you end up in what seems to be a small, concrete area that looks somewhat similar to the arena that you've saw before at Mr. King’s. The main difference seems to be that it's more just a concrete rink in the ground then anything particularly fancy. The deepness of it seems to be intended to allow the robots to go all out. “Here we are! Looks a bit simple, I know, but I got a lot of good memories here. Figured this would be a good place to start your training!”

And he he looks at you with a grin that's less lascivious, and more mischievous. So! Start your bot up, and we’ll go over some of the basics. The core system should be in there…”

He quickly goes through the basics of your bot’s special abilities, which thank goodness there’s also a manual on, and starting up your own bot- it seems to involve taking the core system, which reminds you of a very clear baseball, and inserting it in the secure body frame- right above the waistline. At Tooru’s suggestion, you also equip the Gale Hook, with his help in detaching and reattaching the proper part. Meaning now, he has a hook on his left arm. Looks SUPER pirate-y.

Its eyes light up with a brilliant silver sheen, and it looks at you expectantly. “...Name?” He doesn’t sound prim and proper- he sounds like a rough and gruff pirate captain, someone with gravel in his voice.

“Himawari,” you say, unsure of how to or even IF you should change that later.

The bot merel nods, his eyes flashing a bit. “Acknowledged. I take it you’re the one that started me?” You nod and his eyes blink again. “Then I’ll be fightin’ under ye?” Oh wow, even got the accent.”

“Yes, you will,” you confirm.

He gives you one look up and down… then a sound comes out of his face plate that you swear was a snort of all things. “Foine. Let’s have at it, then.”

“Awesome!” Tooru crows, and the four of you take positions, your bots jumping into the pit with no issue. “Okay, now, first thing’s first- you need to know when to recognize how to attack and how to defend. There’s an art to it, y’know!”

“I’m pretty good at drawing!” You say cheekily, and that’s enough to get him to laugh as you both begin the fight.

You’re not sure what Moxer can do, but it’s clear he’s a Shooter-class- and as soon as Tooru points, he lets out a hail of plasma bullets that Jago quickly moves to avoid.

“Into the air!” you yell. “Dive him!”

“Watch yerself, boy!” Jago crows as the jets under his feet light up, and he takes into the air with a burst.

The plasma rounds follow, but it seems like he's too slow on aiming, and another burst from the jump jets accelerate him at a surprisingly quick clip, leading him to land in front of Moxer’s face with little warning. Moxer’s shield arm moves, but not fast enough as Jago charges him with his hook hand, giving him a nice couch across the chest. A follow-up kick from Jago's boot sends him slamming against the wall, and the fist that tries to follow up is only narrowly dodged.

“W-whoa! Nice use of the jumpjets, Himawari!” Tooru compliments. “But, I guess that means I gotta get serious! Heavy rounds, Moxer!”

“Got it,” he responds, and he immediately takes aim again, this time his shots flying faster- Jago’s too close to avoid all of them, and he takes several heavy shots on his forearms as he tries to block, pushing him back, but not injuring him particularly badly.

I mean otherwise you could set a dice pool system up.

Like use a 1d10 and have easy set at 4, medium at 5, and difficult at 6 and then allow a plus or minus 1 advantage modifier.

And then just take the first three rolls and for each roll that passes you get a different outcome. Zero success is failure with penalty, 1 is normal failure, 2 is a success, and three is success with a bonus.

Good for high speed voting. Bad for people doing other things while playing.

You can also do degree of success with 1d100. The main benefit of 3d10 is that the results are normalized, and crits are literally one in a thousand. It makes it less likely for the PC to suck at tasks they should be proficient at. If you want to pay around with probabilities, anydice.com is great. It can do some really complicated stuff, but the simple stuff is pretty easy to figure out.

-SUCCESS-

The onslaught continues, blisteringly heavy shots of plasma peppering Jago's body, and you can see him straining his servos against the assault, but then the shots stop for a second- Jago raises his head, and throws his weight into a run just as Moxer begins to strafe to the right, trying to keep you in-between its sights and a close wall. Jago's wild punch whiffs, if only barely, but he's got Moxer on the defensive as he attempts to pursue.

"Gaha! Yer a slippery one, ain'tcha!" Jago says with a vicious smile in his eyes. "Not too shabby for a walkin' turret!"

"I try," is all Moxer says as he slips past another punch.

“Not bad!” Tooru says with a smile as the two try to position. “Since this is supposed to be training, I'll tell you a secret. Moxer’s big thing is that he can change ammunition types. And he has four right now! You know two- Standard and Heavy! The third is...Webbing! MOXER!”

Moxer leaps back, and takes aim, and you need to make a call…

you'd want to tweak your DCs there. 8 has only 41%, and 10 is 16%.

3d10 DC 20 is 28%, and 25 is 5%.

>>2323165
Adding together is what helps smooth out excessively bad rolls. Dice pool would work better if you wanted an action chain, with a roll for each action.

Here are some comparisons:
2d6
http://anydice.com/program/20
3d10
http://anydice.com/program/39
1d100
http://anydice.com/program/504

If you want to the the chance of meeting a DC for a given value, chance the 'Data' tab from 'Normal' to 'At Least'
>>
>>2323282
But a bad roll only knocks you one down the rung of degrees of success, so it doesn't need smoothing out.

That way more people can have their roll "count " making the more fun, if less mathematically designed to average out.

The first few shots sail pass the captain as he moves to keep out of harm’s way, but they don’t stop there. You need to get him back into your range where you have the advantage...ah, doy!

“Captain! Hook him!” In response, Jago leans to the side and cocks his hook arm back, slinging it forward in a sideways arc.

“Ha! Right!” Boxer looks to try and duck to avoid it, but sadly he’s a touch slow- his left leg makes a ‘shunk’ noise as the hook manages to cleave into it. “Well, now! Lookie what I got ‘ere, eh?” He yanks hard as the cable reels back. “Let’s ‘ave us a squizz…” Suddenly, he PULLS, and Moxer is yanked through the air.

“Oh crap!” Tooru isn’t happy at all, and he looks at you nervously. “Uh, I mean, good job, yeah! It’’s- it’s always important to- Moxer, Blinders!” He can't even keep his act up as he gives commands, and as Moxer hit the ground in front of you, he fires out a quick salvo of pellets that immediately explode into a massive plume of white smoke, obscuring everyone’s vision.

“OY! Wha’s this!?” You can hear Jago complain, but he’s got plenty reason to…

Actually, I've got to take a breather. I'll be back in about 2 hours and hopefully be back to finish this fight tonight, hopefully.

hmm, Jago doesn't have any defensive abilities, might need to mod him a little.

It's high, but I'll try. He's still hooked, so reel him in.

If the engage is normaly 95 shouldn't the negative modifier make the roll dificulty be 100?

A near miss is still a miss with a dice pool, but two middling dice in a sum can still contribute. You are right about rolls "counting" though.

By the way here's the math for a dice pool using 3d10. You can change the DC or the dice values without breaking things if you want to mess with other setups, though if you want more/less than 3 dice you'll need to copy/paste or delete some of the calculations.

We're still hooked to Boxer, right?

Just because it can't go over. Shouldn't mean it couldn't round up to a flat 100

I'll back this it's just a practice match so let's try neat stuff..

Changin to shark dive don't want to look like a professional or give away how good Lori might be after all it's her 'first match'.
>>
>>2323468
hey, its not our fault that the only moves our bot has are direct counters to his bot.
>>
>>2323614
i think he didn't expected we would have a good grip with battling. After all Lori is way more mature then what she looks.

Alright, looks like we're trying to jump above the clouds and dive for him.

Time for a roll, need to beat 85.

“Get above the smoke!” You say hurriedly- you're not sure if Moxer has any kind of alternate vision, but you don't want to take the risk. Not to mention that you haven't heard anything major down there, so that means he probably hasn't unhooked himself….right? “Dive- or jump! WHATEVER!”

“Oi, I heard ya!” smoke, and in a burst of movement you see the form of Jago burst through the smoke, and for a second you can see him look around for the tell tell signs of movement through the clearing smokescreen as he hits the apex of his arc.

And his chain...isn’t following. It takes a second for you to realize, and by then it’s too late.

It pulls taught without warning, and for a second Jago’s body goes slack at the sudden tension on it- right when a salvo of plasma shots follow up and pepper him in the air, causing his body to spasm as Moxer juggles him with gunshots for a few seconds like some sort of fancy movie special effect.

“Ha! That’s the way!” Tooru crows, but it’s still not over- even you can tell that. Jago falls as the smoke begins to clear- whatever was used to make it, it doesn't seem to be all that thick, dissipating fairly quickly. It's still hard to see, however...you’re going to have to make sure that you don’t give him another opportunity like that, though, and as Jago picks himself up, you notice that there’s a lot more holes where they probably shouldn't be…

Then you notice a swirl of smoke across the field- as does Jago, judging by how his body moves, and the salvo begins again as Jago makes a run for it. As the bright bolts clear the smoke, you can see a clear and heavy gash in his left leg. Jago’s hook is clear, at least.

Buy time for the smoke to clear, see if you can tease any other tricks out. We've seen all four ammo types now, but those can't be his only tricks.

Thanks for running.

I say ince we end this battle we should buy some parts for our new bot. other then the hook i mean.
>>
>>2325619
How about a corncob pipe attachment that can act as a flamethrower and/or smoke projector?
>>
>>2325663
Was thinking either a sword to follow with the hook or a thicker frame so it can handle/tank more damage. But most likely will make him way to heavy to move around.
>>
>>2325694
>>2325663
I say we get a pilebunker to compliment the hook.
>>
>>2325694
He's already got a sturdier frame at the cost of speed. I figure he needs something that gives him a defensive ability; he's all offense right now.
>>2325663
This might work if it's an option. Or maybe a distraction parrot? Or a flintlock with a smoke charge? Something involving his hat?
>>
>>2325706
So long a brawler can use it. But for what i see we need to get something envolving grip and strength so either a sword or a a better arm for grapple.
>>
>>2325719
>Or maybe a distraction parrot? Or a flintlock with a smoke charge?

What about smoke bombs? something like the smokescreen that the shooter we are figthing just used in us?
>>
>>2325725
or we can give him a real flintlock that fires a .50 lead shot. That could be our one hit finisher.
>>
>>2325751
Now hear me out on this....Shoulder mounted cannon.
>>
>>2325765
make the ammo a gyrojet and you have a deal

How viable, in terms of it actually working, would a semi-active type of personal shield be. Something along the lines of keeping a mana field around the user's body (Passive state) and whenever an attack passes through the field it solidifies either at that point or all around (Active state). I'm imagining it would work like a relatively high mana commitment (Locked for use by the barrier) + periodic drain to maintain the field.
I'm suggesting this because while Miranda does have the turbo shield available it's more of a "Oh god I need to tank a nuke" rather than something you would use to keep yourself alive from a bunch of dudes with guns spraying wildly in your direction.
>>
>>2330548
In theory, I don't see a problem with the idea, but doesn't seem like something Miranda would develop. She's all about brute power, not efficiency. I could see Lori, with her reduced pool and less direct-combat-focused powers, developing something like that if she ever actually worked on new techniques.
>>
>>2330571
True, but I can see Miranda thinking "I sure am getting shot at a lot lately, it'd be nice if I had a thing that covers my blind angles and prevents lucky shots from connecting" since she is the sort to get in a fight more often than not.
>>
>>2330589
a guard sigil can do that. Remember it was strong enough to protect the lieutenants from shots and even from Miranda's punches. The weakness it has is if someone manage to drain the mana stocked in it.
>>
>>2330607
Now you just made me feel dumb, I completely forgot we picked those up.

Hey guys. Here because I've a bit of an announcement (it's also on Twitter).

Basically, I've gotten a very nice job opportunity, and it's going to take up a vast majority of my free time, but it's something I enjoy doing, and so I'll be unavailable during the workweek anymore. Meaning, I'll only be running on weekends for the near future- started Wednesday next week. I've been trying to get everything in place- that's why the last couple of days I've been absent, and why today didn't happen, either- I was supposed to be finished with something today, but it got pushed back to tomorrow. I'll try to run then, but the situation is unstable, if exciting for me at the moment.

This also means my writing may end up being a bit quicker paced when I DO run, since I don't want to spend like, a half a year on a single job. I apologize for this late news, but that's the situation as of last night.
>>
>>2330626
I'm glad you managed to land a nice job doing something you enjoy, though I'm sorry you won't be able to run as often. If you prefer running during the week, you could try 1 post a day like SWQ16 is doing right now, but real life comes first obviously. Hope it works out.
>>
>>2330626
It's fine man glad you managed to get a job in something you like.
>>
>>2330626
Sounds like a much better deal than last time you got a new job. Hope it works or for you
>>
>>2330626
Hope the job stuff goes well
at the very least you seem to like it
>>
>>2330626
Hope the job works out, it's unfortunately rare that you can find a job that you like AND that pays well.
