You've learned some information concerning your mission to find the Wish Granter. You still need to visit the garrison to collect the reward the town guard promised you. You're free to continue studying information at the library or leave and go somewhere else in Oakheart.

>You gain 1000 XP from the library
>You now have 7975

You tell your party to take the rest of the day off and go to the garrison alone. The door guards say they've been expecting you and lead you to a room with the Captain and his second in command.

Borin: "Are you alright Christof? Your arm looks hurt"
Captain: *gives a slight 'get on with it' gesture*
Borin: "Oh right... for your assistance in apprehending the mercenaries we offer you this reward of 40 Talons"

>You now have 308 Talons

Captain: "Fair pay for the casting of a few level one spells if you ask me. Now this isn't over yet, there are still some mercs remaining that need punishing not to mention we need to find out what happened to the people they abducted. If you wipe out the terrorists and bring back the missing people I'll reward you with 700 Talons. You in?"

>"Why do you need me for this?"

"I don't. The mercs have a hideout in the woods. It's got some traps and more importantly they apparently have a skilled illusionist with them. I felt like adventurers would be a better choice for the mission. Also I don't want to send any guards far away from Oakheart in search of the missing people."

>"I accept but before I go I'd like to talk about the orc situation in Clarcton"

"I'm quite happy to slaughter orc scum, but the town council wont let me leave until they're 100% convinced the abduction problem is solved. After the last of the mercenaries are put down me and my men should be able to join the fight."

Satisfied you decide to take it easy for the rest of the day and meet up with your party for the mission tomorrow.

The following morning you find Ulric, Salaman and Alina have returned to the tavern and are waiting around for you to lead them.

Alina: "Good morning Christof, how's the arm?"
Ulric: "Hiya"

Salaman: "That would explain the invisibility, be careful not to fall for any cheap illusions"

You make a quick stop to purchase a sack of flour and head on your way. After hiking for a while you reach the location the guards gave you. Some old structure in the middle of the woods that has all of its ground level windows boarded shut. You can faintly hear voices coming from within.

Salaman: "As you say, come forth little scorpion"

Salaman summons a scorpion which starts scuttling around as much space as it can trying to trigger a trap or aggravate an invisible guard. You hear a soft click as a negative energy glyph is triggered. The scorpion survives and continues working as you creep closer to a barricaded window.

"Forget it, your men are obviously not coming back, they're probably dead or worse. Our partnership has come to an end here is your final payment."
"Wait! we can still rescue them. With your invisibility we can break into Oakheart's prison and spring them out! Then we can go back to capturing people for you"
"I'm afraid my master explicitly told me to end our contract when this inevitability occurs. You're on your own now."
"Bah! Go then, I don't need your help. I'll think of something"

You slug him in the face

"ARGH! That's it! You're dead"

He raises his hands to cast a spell but the door opens behind him and two people in iron armour come out. A woman with a sword and a bearded man with an axe.

Axeman: "An adventurer! You must be the one responsible for my men disappearing. How would you like to make a deal?"

He raises his axe to attack
Mage: "Fools! Let's see you attack me when you're ensnared in flaming chains!"
The mage casts a spell that shoots out three sets of flaming chains that wrap around everyone next to him. He starts sprinting away. Leaping over the scorpion as he goes.
The chains squeeze you tightly and burn you for 6 damage

I want to say it could be an illusion but i dont know if that changes anything
>>
>>2300337
You can try and disbelieve an illusion by just standing there for a moment and allowing it to harm you. If it's an illusion it goes away and you still have time to take your turn. If it's actually real it automatically hits you and does maximum damage and your turn is used up.
>>
>>2300356
Then I would say yeah its fake, the mercs are our semi allies now vs the mage so taking damage doesn't matter
>>
>>2300279

...to disbelieve the illusion.
Also, ow. Illusions are hot.

If we put out the (totally illusionary) chains, we're still chained.
If we remove the burning chains, we're free in one step.
If we fail to remove the chains, we just welcomed ourselves to another 6 damage. Damn, but them's the breaks.

>Plan B:
Our legs are free, armless tackle the bastard if Ulric can slow him down for us.
Stop, drop, and roll on his ass.

>>2300286

I can't imagine our armor is loose enough for us to do that, especially with tightening fire chains. It's not like he just threw a tent on us and lit it on fire.

You firmly believe the chains aren't even real. Why bother struggle against the chains if they don't exist? You do nothing and the chains disappear. You can no longer see the chains wrapping the mercenaries but they're are behaving like they're still bound.
You gain 6 hit points (or rather never lost them in the first place)
Alina shoots the mage for 11 damage.
The mage pulls out a wand and flicks it at Ulric and Alina causing a cyclone to form at their feet lifting them helplessly into the air. He points the wand downwards and a wall of fire appears in front of him. The wall of fire isn't very wide and you could easily go around it.

The fire is obviously not real you go right through it. It disappears as you touch it. The summoned scorpion, apparently able to see illusions goes around the fire and triggers an explosion rune for 47 damage

"I see you're a little smarter than the average martial. But let's see you deal with THIS!"

He suddenly splits into multiple copies of himself. They all start laughing with identical voices.

"Which one of us is real?"

At the very least, he seems like he might be fool enough to tell us more than he should this way.

Let's interrogate the mercs and the mage.
>>
>>2300553
Nonesense, he can start casting magic if we need to turn on the mercs or make himself invisible or something. Why would he reveal the rogues lies anyway? He probably hates us more then he hates the mercs.

To gag or not to gag, this is the question.

I say we gag him, but leave it possible to ungag him easily for questions or if he seems like he has something to say.
If he starts getting all mumbo jumbo like, then we pop him one and the gag goes back in.
