Ok guys, news time!

So I think I already said, but I'll restate here, that we're on a 12 hour schedule at work Tuesday, Wedensday, and Thursday this week. I'm going to do my absolute dead level best to get posts up those days, but I cannot promise they'll go up on time, if at all. Long story short there: Engineering and Sales are dicks, news at 11. haha!

Archive is here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 It's not too long yet, so if you're looking to jump in and want to read it all, now's a good time, haha!

Don't really have much else. My twitter, for anyone new, is here: https://twitter.com/Warhound89
I try to keep that fairly recent, but with the daily updates it's a lot less necessary than it was in the 89 days. Still, if anything comes up, there'll be a message there, most likely.

Anyway, that's all the news I can think of guys, so let's go!

+++

You think for a minute on the subject. All the Nordic names pop into your head- Loki, Garm, Freki- things you’d expect a Fenrir to be named. But the name that sticks out most to you is Papa Legba- the loa that acts as an intermediary between the others and humans. Given your dream last night, it seems fitting- and because of the computer's role in VDNI, there’s an extra layer to it. It suits perfectly, you think.

“Papa Legba.” You say to Kim, after a bit of thought. “Name it Papa Legba.”

“Odd name. But ok, I’ll set it to that. When I go home, if they assign you a new SO, she’ll have to reset everything, and you can change the name then.” Kim responds.

You feel sluggish as the computer comes online and begins to take over from the rudimentary backup systems. The Combat computer, designed in part with magitech and martian tech, is built specifically to help you cope with the incredible amount of data incoming in a fight. It assists you in maintaining situational awareness- and it helps bind you to your systems operator. It’s part of the reason that so many Fenrir crews end up married after a few years- like Billy and Una.

It’s going through startup checks now- initial setup things, like the first time you turn on a new computer at home. It works through it’s associated hardware, a feeling like a tingling all over your scalp, then begins bringing software online.

>>
Kim feels more and more distinct in your head- she’s busy, of course, but there’s something else.

Fear.

It takes a few minutes before you can really identify it as such, but once you do, you’re sure of it. She’s afraid of something, has been for some time. On the one hand, you want to ask- she’s your crew, afterall, and her wellbeing is your responsibility, but at the same time, it’s buried so deep that you’re worried that calling her out on it may not be a good idea. She’s already trying to hide it, afterall.

[] Ask her about it- why is she afraid? What is she afraid of?
[] Let it ride until it becomes a problem- it may just be something simple, like a fear of screwing up or something normal.

>[] Ask her about it- why is she afraid? What is she afraid of?

while its probably her beeing worried we will hate her if she fucks something up

>>
>>2282923
>Bring it up later, go watch the storm out the side of the hangar and talk it out
No need to throw her off her game now, and no need to wait until it blows up
>>
>>2282923
>[X] Let it ride until it becomes a problem- it may just be something simple, like a fear of screwing up or something normal.

It might just be that this is a combo of her crush on us and the knowledge that Fenrir crews normally end up bonded so strongly.
Would make sense that makes a teenage girl nervous.

We can ask her later, while not connected to the VDNI.

If it's buried that deep I'd doubt it's something simple, should talk about it now instead of when/if it becomes an issue. Best night of the week!

Best not to leave a problem like this alone. Doubly so if Baron says that things are gonna pop off soon.

>>

That doesn't sound like a super deep seated fear.

If it's something like intimacy issues, it might be.

And connecting to VDNI together properly is reportedly pretty intimate, even compared to the basic stuff we have now.

You debate letting it go for a minute- afterall, there’s not a lot of reason to be digging till you have something more concrete.

That said, it’s still your business, to some extent. You need her to be without worry, especially if Baron Samedi is right and a war is coming. Fenrirs are odd like that- panic is infection in combat, doubly so when you’re linked to a VDNI system. You don’t frighten, but if she’s panicking, it’s going to affect you all the same.

“Kim.” You say

“Mmm?” She responds, sounding distracted. She knows, of course- she’s got the same access to you that you have to her now- in other words, she knows that you know.

“What’s bothering you?” You ask.

She hesitates- you can feel it in the link, the insecurity and worry leaping to the front of her mind. “N-nothing.” She says- a lie, and you both know it.

“Kim.”

She sighs. “What if this isn’t right?” She says, after a minute.

“What?”

“What if this isn’t right?” She asks again- there’s some courage there, but now that fear and anxiety is at the front- enough that it makes your own skin crawl a little. “What if I’m not supposed to be here?”

“What do you mean?” You ask- you have a good idea, and your mother cautioned you against this path just for this kind of thing- you shouldn’t be a pilot just because you felt you had to. That was part of your reasoning, you suppose, but not all of it- Last night wasn’t the first time the Baron visited you in your dreams, afterall.

“I went into a navy contract because my mom did, because my sister did, and because everyone expected me to.” She says. “I mean, mom did it when you could go active before your time in the academy was up, but now you can’t, and I only thought it was a good idea because she always talked about how she made all these friends during the war, and how much it helped her.”

She pauses. “But I don’t think anyone here likes me, and- “She stops. Whatever she was going to say is buried under an avalanche of guilt.

[] And? Prompt her to continue.
[] Let it go- reassure her about her fears, try to help.

Also, let's not forget that she's literally 13 years old. I work with kids that age, and they can get very easily discouraged when they actually have to face reality. They can also bounce back from it pretty easily, but some poutiness- which, when combined with military responsibility and a college-level education turns it into outright insecurity- isn't exactly unexpected.

[x] And? Prompt her to continue.

“And?” you prompt.

She struggles for a minute, searching for words. It’s hard to tell with the adapter in place- even with the computer working on the link, there’s a level of distance there that even Papa Legba can’t bridge for you.

“And I don’t know if I want to do this anymore.” She says, after a minute.

“Because you don’t think anyone likes you?” You ask.

“That’s part of it.” She admits. “But all I really want to do is research and design, like mom does now. She said her time with Uncle Frank helped so much that I thought I had to do this, but I don’t know now.” She struggles to put words to her nebulous fear, but it’s a whole host of things you can feel- her fear of an actual war, her fear of having to kill someone, her fear of screwing up and getting herself- or you- killed. Her fear of being hated, her fear that she’s going to misstep and get reassigned by Kat, her fear that she won’t measure up to the example set by her mother during the soviet war in 1989. There’s a lot of fear and anxiety in her that you can pick up on- more than you initially thought. She’s kept it buried deep, but with the computer coming online, it’s coming to the fore- this whole thing is for real, now. She’s a fighter systems operator in a Fenrir team, and if there’s a shooting war, she’ll be on the very pointy end of it.

She’s afraid of that, too.

“Are you thinking of asking for reassignment?” You ask.

“Well, no one but you likes me...” She begins.

“I haven’t exactly had the warmest reception from them either.” You point out. “They just lost a Fenrir and it’s crew, and they’re on edge.”

“But that’s just one thing.” She says. “What about the rest? Maybe I’m not cut out for this and you’d be better off with someone else.”

[] Maybe we shouldn’t decide less than 24 hours into the cruise.
[] If that’s how you feel, we could bring it up with Kat, see what she says.

It’s a world of witches.
Women’s Studies would, by necessity, include witches. Given our profession and how magic and witches are needed by the military and essential to the operation of a Fenrir, it seems more appropriate than a degree in Ancient Greek philosophy.
>>
>>2285616
No, in a world of Witches, there would be real degrees covering magic, magitech, et cetera.
The shitty sub-branch of sociology that is "women's studies" would remain an underwater basket-weaving type degree.

So coven politics would be a part of political science? Witch history a specialization in the department of history?

>Let's talk to someone about this.

I'd like to wait, but ut was literally the first thing we felt.

Not that she was anxious, nor worried. But fear.

And fear, its the mind killer.

Again, if she'd been feeling a mix of emotions, that'd be one thing. But she didn't. And she was broadcasting overwhelming fear enough it tipped US off to it.

She wants to build things, and that's okay. Forcing herself to do something runs the risk of 'breaking'. Not to mention the stress may be too much for her, cause her to become a liability.

It's going to be at least another day before we fly, and we need to square things before we become another accident.

It's not a problem, not yet anyway, and I think having her have a 1 on 1 chat with Ice in her capacity as a family friend or her Mom is a better solution than bringing it straight to Kat who is A) Partly responsible for this and B) Is most likely subconsciously looking for a reason to bounce her/us out of the unit.
>>
So what the does society of 2016 look like for non-witch women? Is every man trying to get into a pair of witch panties to the point of wimen having to lower their standards, or is there a new fashion trend of "faux-witch" to even stand a miniscule chance of competing?
>>
>>2285171
Lots of fighter pilots don't have STEM degrees.
>>
>>2285884
Since most men don't stand a chance with witches as is, this is the concern strictly limited to angry internet virgins.

Most witches likely dress normally when they arent in the military on standby to power strikers or fly hybrids.
>>
>>2286046

It's also been established, only military witches can go nopants.

Some young witches clearly liked to show off back in '89, like when we went with ice to buy some witchcomix, but the dress code should be normal most of the time.
>>
>>2286247
We know the military snaps up witches when they can, what about law enforcement and other agencies?
>>
>>2286275
Military would get first dibs, and most witches are of limited use outside of strikers, right? There's no way any police would keep strikers, it'd be like them keeping tanks. Increasing damage from small arms would be a deficit.

I know heal witches are in high demand everywhere though. Maybe some other common powers are prized in the civilian market?

Not a Tank.

It's an MRAP.

>>

I could have sworn there were Striker refitted for civilian purposes, like firefighting Strikers.
Maybe there are SWAT witches? Strikers designed for urban environments and shield projection to protect teams/civilians?
>>
>>2286350
SWAT Witches would be the most likely; though their strikers would still be much lighter than a true "Tank" Witch.

I cannot recall if things like firefighting witches have ever been mentioned.
>>
>>2286295

I could magine a marke for firefighter witches, with their shields n shit
>>
>>2286364
I could see it being done by heavily modifying a tank striker and assigned weapons in order to make a witchy rapid water transport, especially in areas that would require off-road capabilities.
>>
>>2286338
>>2286340

It's not a tank, but it is gross overkill for law enforcement. Strikers are also not necessarily tanks either.

Also it's a Cadillac Gage Commando, which is an amphibious APC/armored car (like a BTR) hybrid. It was originally developed for MPs in Vietnam as a convoy escort, some of the original V-100 models ended up used by SWAT, like by the LAPD (who nicknamed theirs "the tank").

Civilian pattern strikers aren't unheard of, but ever since the Martian War, witches have traditionally been encouraged to focus on military rather than civil service.
>>
>>2286304
Do witches get sensor boosts from their familiar enough to make a difference?

>>2286350
Maybe in very limited numbers, but you need to acquire the strikers themselves, have the knowledge to refit them for civil use, have the parts to maintain them, and have a witch to operate them. SWAT is the most likely, but witches are still all about high power/weight, doing things like putting out the same firepower as tanks and 20mm cannons, not the right scale of force for civil use. They would be excellent for shielding though.

>>2286378
>gross overkill
There's no way they left the mounted weapons on it, so it should just be what amounts to an armored truck. Intimidating as hell, but not any more dangerous than a SUV.
>>
>>2286378
>it is gross overkill for law enforcement

While this is largely true of most local police departments, for large metropolis police departments and SWAT who have to deal with heavily-armed gangs, drug cartels, etc. They do actually have value in allowing response officers to safely deal with those threats. Also, the things are Disarmed, or fitted with water cannon or tear gas launchers *at best*.

Now, there's a great deal to be said about the relative (lack of) competence displayed by certain PDs in general, and the proliferation of this equipment in small local PDs who frankly have no legitimate use for the things, but that's really a separate issue.
>>
>>2286350
I wouldn't be surprised if emergency response witches wore bike shorts or something similar.
>>
>>2286401
I'm fairly certain some departments ranging from local to state level (including ones I've never heard of) have demil M113s and there's something about the FBI and ATF SWAT units having M728 CEVs (Which are literally just modified M60A1s for the few of us who have no idea what those are) though I have no idea how accurate that is given the only source is wiki, and even then that might have just been for Waco.
>>
>>2286401
>>2286397

The original LAPD models just had a battering ram. I'm talking more about the general ethos of militarizing the police - taking a milspec vehicle with things like amphibious capability and what not and going "we'll just paint LAPD on the side!" and using it to smash in doors (keeping in mind the LAPD are not always known for their restraint) is a bit of an overkill. Typically SWAT uses armored vans now, though some still have APCs, but I do feel it is often an unnecessary step taken because they want to be scarier.

t. criminal justice major

That said, especially as we are now in the War on Terror era, it's silly to assume that police forces don't have witches on hand for "special weapons and tactics" with demilitarized strikers not used by the military anymore. A witch can knock down a door safely just as easily as the "LAPD tank" can, and probably costs less to fuel up. Are there land strikers based on lighter Armored Vehicles? There might be LAPD witches with M706 Strikers already.
>>
>>2286433
>an unnecessary step taken because they want to be scarier.
No, it’s because surplus stuff is dirt cheap compared to purpose built vehicles.
>>
>>2286437
And honestly, the military has a lot more practice in making properly protected vehicles. I'd trust a demilled APC over a custom civil-built one anyday, at least for small arms protection.
>>
>>2286437

I mean, this is also true, but if you look back to stories from the '80s when they actually used the ram, police totally gush about how scary it is, one guy straight up comparing it to nuclear deterrence, despite the fact that they actually used it to bust into crack houses a very small number of times.
>>
>>2286456
That's more of an indictment on the disturbing lack of competence of the police in general rather than of the department's possession of specialized armoured vehicles,
>>
>>2286456
Oh sure. I’m sure the guys on the ground liked it for that reason. But the decision to actually purchase it was made because it was cheap
>>
>>2286459

Well, at this point the whole thing becomes circular. There are pros and cons at either end but we're not going to pick apart human frailties vis a vis law enforcement on a siamese stone-carving forum.

The salient point is that cops will go an extra mile, regardless of the ethical element, so major cities probably do have SWAT witches in demilitarized strikers.

In terms of the "Militarization" of the police, i'd disagree that the broad acquisition of cheap surplus armoured vehicles is truly the problem. Granted, most PDs have no real practical use for them, but they're ultimately little more threatening than the armoured cars banks use to transit cash around.

The more pressing issue in terms of Police Militarisation is best exemplified by the fuckwits running around during Ferguson and other recent incidents all tooled up in fucking surplus MARPAT, trying to be as ultra-OPERATOR as humanly possible.

*That* behavior is what should cause concern. Police getting this idea in their heads that they're some kind of pseudo-military and running around pretending they're 1MarDiv in Fallujah. Acting like that develops a mentality that is the Antithesis of what police should be; that they're soldiers in a hostile environment rather than a civil organization empowered to uphold the law and protect the community.
When that mentality is lost; generally bad shit follows in it's wake.

A plethora of armoured vehicles is ultimately not a problem; there are practical uses for the things and they're cheap surplus. It's when beat officers start acting like soldiers you should be worried.
>>
>>2286485

I wholeheartedly agree. I don't think the armored vehicles are inherently the problem, they're just another very obvious vector for that warped mentality.

You put some cops in something they think of as "the tank" and they smash "fortresses" (forted up crack houses), and it can easily put them much in the wrong mind-set. They think they're being billy badasses fighting a "war" on whatever and it makes a lot of the fighty stupidity of humans come out.

Though, fucking anything makes the fighty stupidity of humans come out. As I'm sure we will see in this very quest as soon as we get through the tutorial.

It doesn't help this tendency that the government describes things like fighting drug proliferation a "War on Drugs."

I'm not sure how much it actually matters, especially since the impact is more of a subtle cultural one. But I doubt it helps this kind of mentality at all.
>>
>>2286485
>>2286511
You know, I wonder if it all of this doesn't have anything to do with S.W.A.T.. Now, hear me out here. SWAT does have a legitimate reason to run itself almost like a "military-light" organization, they're supposed to only be called in when things are bad enough to warrant them, so when they get called out, they ARE going into hostile territory against enemies - in theory - as opposed to simply helping uphold the law. They're a necessity, they have legitimate reasons for the mindset, they have need of the more militaristic gear, fair play. The problem, I think, arises from EVERYONE wanting to feel like they're special/good enough for SWAT without actually having to BE the top 1%, because SWAT is cool. They became a cop hoping to become SWAT, they don't get to be SWAT, but they still want to feel like they are. I don't know, just a thought.
>>
>>2286597
Ugh, I need to learn not to post while exhausted. What I was TRYING to say was that I wonder if it has anything to do with SWAT being considered more a division of the police rather than its own separate entity, maybe some degrees of separation would have helped with that, if SWAT was more of a branch of the FBI that helped out - and maybe still drew from - area cops instead of a branch of the local/state/whatever cops?

Ok, votes over!

Looks like we *might* possibly skip the 12 hour days. maybe. Not sure yet. Fingers crossed though!

Man, I wish i was a trust fund kid sometimes, haha!
>>
[x] Maybe we shouldn’t decide less than 24 hours into the cruise.

“It seems soon to decide that.” You point out. “We haven’t even been here a full day yet.”

“I know but-” She cuts herself off, her arguments a jumbled up mess in her head- there’s a lot of competing issues up there, one of which is a fear of disappointing you.

“We can go talk to Captain Bishop, if you want to.” You supply, trying to be reassuring. You’ve never been much good with this kind of thing- you could motivate your team on the field, but your mom was always more of the people person- her degrees no doubt helping in that regard. “She might be able to help.”

There’s a small feeling of relief, there- hope, even.

“Alright.” She says, not rid of her fear by any means- it’s not even all that much quieter, but it’s enough that she thinks she can handle it.

“W-when can we talk to her?” She asks after another minute.

[] As soon as we’re done here, we’ll request to talk to her.
[] Ana and I have a ‘family’ dinner with her this evening, why don’t you come along?

>>
>>2288847
Cougar-familiared cougar when?
>>
>>2288905
Well, you guys get kind of a skewed perspective, but witches are actually fairly rare in the broader world- maybe one in two hundred fifty thousand or so, give or take.
>>
>>2288931
How strongly hereditary is it? From chars we see it's nearly 100% matrilinear. Also how much outside witchy families?
Huh, that would make for some weird sociopolitical impacts+aristocracy/Devine right if we weren't forcing mirror history...
>>
>>2288847
In the intervening 20 years has the understanding of gnome ability advanced at all?
>>
>>2288957
It tends to depend on the witch- there's no actual set rules (There's statistics, of course, but we all know about statistics) Stronger witch lines- for example, the Romanov line- tend to produce witches more often than weaker lines. That said, though, it can skip generations- as happened with Slider- or track down from the father's side, though that's very rare.

Outside witchy families- well, if there's a witch born to normal parents, you can generally dig back to find a witch ancestor, somewhere.

>>2288963
Yes and no. The covens do recognize it exists, and have taken some efforts to codify it, but they're slow and sporadic- it's just too hard to pin down most male talents with any kind of accuracy. Other than a few outlying examples- like Frank- it'a very hard to tell if a man is a talent or just extremely lucky or good at what they do.

Serious question, would Han Solo be considered a gnome or is that just the force?
>>
>>2289609
An interesting question.
There are a few references in the old EU to this idea of certain individuals being what's termed "Force-attuned". That is, they have a stronger connection to the Force than average, but not by much. They can't do crazy shit, can't even consciously use the Force, they're just a hair quicker, a bit luckier, have slightly better instincts than others. Most, possibly all of them, don't even realize they're doing it. They're basically Force-Gnomes.
Han is theorized as a possible example once in a passing thought by his daughter Jaina, and it would explain all the crazy crap he survives through sheer blind luck over the years.
So I'd say a tentative yes, Han would quite possibly be a Gnome.
And as for nucanon, well, who gives a flying fuck about nucanon?

Why do I feel EU in this timeline would feature this more heavily than in ours?
>>
>>2288847
That's something that takes time and effort to cultivate. It's doable but both twitch and youtube pay like ass, and you have to really cultivate a following first, before you can do it full time.
>>
>>2289652
Probably just would have become official sooner.
The basic concept is a very old fan theory, that got picked up by a couple of writers for passing references starting in 2009, due to how neatly it slots into the lore. I'd argue that it can't really be HEAVILY featured, due to its subtle nature. Han MIGHT be Force-attuned, but he also might be just that lucky and good. Same with Wedge Antilles, Tycho Celchu, Soontir Fel, and all the other top-tier Aces that fans theorized for years might have some latent, low-tier Force sensitivity.

[x] As soon as we’re done here, we’ll request to talk to her.

“As soon as we’re done here.” You offer, feeling that small bit of relief growing stronger- Aunt Tabitha will know what to do. “But let’s not rush it.” You say.

“Ok.” She responds as a brief flicker of surprise shoots through her. It’s gone almost as fast as it appears- replaced by the faintest sense of embarrassment. “Thanks Morgan.”

Systems begin to move more quickly as the computer begins anticipating Kim’s commands- it never executes anything on it’s own, it can’t, but it’ll often have systems cued up before you need them- as your attention shifts to something else, you find it’s already painted by a half-dozen sensors. Anastasia stands out as an almost eye-searingly bright arctic blue shape next to the chief on the deck, her familiar out as she helps tune the computer’s ability to read the Wells sensor.

You note somewhat wryly that it reads her mass as well- while you know better than to ever ask a girl what she weighs, you now know down to the gram.

Startup remains a lengthy process- the computer intrudes a bit, similar, you think, to an eager sibling or anxious teammate. It knows the fighter’s systems are still down- weapons haven’t been programmed in, and feel like a hole in your understanding. It takes you a second to remember that you do remember what the Fenrir has- the twin cannons in the wing root and the second, smaller pair located in the forward fuselage, the weapons bays buried in the fuselage and the hardpoints along the wing- and, as you think of them, Papa Legba takes note of them too. They’re all unloaded, cold, and safed up. Your hardpoints and bays are empty and locked out- you’ll have to remove the locks from the ground. And, of course, the special weapons pod that normally rides underneath the cockpit is detached, unpowered, and off- the streamlined plate over the port.

1/2
>>
It takes a few more hours to complete- at the end of it, you’re almost reluctant to unplug from the VDNI system and shut everything down, dropping the computer into standby.

Kim looks at you expectantly as you both exit the aircraft with help from your crew. You nod as you descend the ladder under the watchful eye of the chief- disorientation and lightheadedness aren’t uncommon at all after VDNI interface, though both tend to be temporary complaints.

“Feeling ok, El-tee?” The chief asks as your boots hit the deck. You nod as he looks at you with a critical eye.

“Well,” He allows a second later, as Kim joins you. “You look fine. Sometimes that computer takes more out of teams than they realize. You look good to go, though. I’d still recommend you go see the docs just to get a once over- let ‘em know I sent you and they’ll know why you’re there. We’ll handle the rest of the work here, get the batteries set up and standby mode configured.”

You nod as Anna skips over to join you. “So what now?” She asks, reaching down to get Kim’s bag- Kim frowns up at her and takes it back.

That depends. Ground based railguns can attack whatever gets into the atmosphere, but depending on their size, their actual coverage and range is limited. Space based platforms would require having to lift all the ammo up with the cannons, as well as having to resupply them if they fire. At this stage energy-based systems like lasers are just more efficient.

[x] Kim and I are going to go see to some things, Anastasia.

“Kim and I are going to see to some things, Anastasia.” You say, pulling off your helmet with the distinct click of the probes in the back disconnecting and the covers closing over the ports in your neck. Anastasia tilts her head to the side, regarding you a bit, then shrugs.

“Well, if that’s the case, that’s fine.” She says. “I guess I can go help in the weather shop, they always have the best coffee anyway. Later Bro. don’t forget about dinner! Make sure he doesn’t get into trouble, Kim.”

And with that she’s off. You can’t tell if you hurt her feelings, though you kind of doubt you did- simple fact is, while this isn’t the most you’ve ever interacted with the Bishop side of your family, it’s certainly going to be. You rarely spent more than a couple of months at a time in Washington, preferring to stay at your mother’s, for the most part, and you’ve never really visited the house in Texas at all, despite how close it is to your home.

Kim watches her go, then tugs at your wrist. “Can we go?” She asks.

You nod to her, indicating to the chief you’re headed out. He nods. “We’re going to have a sit-down, el-tee, and get to know each other some.” He says, as you leave. “I usually try to get something together with all the squadron guys at the first port of call, so I’ll let ya know.”

“Sounds good.” You respond, before leading Kim out of the hangar deck. She’s more subdued- her fear, you realize, explains her behavior. She’s been too scared to be her usual, possessive, clingy self. You almost feel bad for her for that- you wonder when the fear set in for her. You’d been almost nervous when you were assigned Papa Legba from the depot- one of three ‘cold’ Fenrir’s available at the time as replacement units. After that, you just haven’t had time.

The ship, despite the cessation of flight operations, seems to be busier than ever. You have to duck along the bulkhead in the narrow corridors as sailors and marine move purposefully- or lazily- towards their own tasks, before eventually making it to the island structure, where the captain’s office is, along with her sea cabin.

>>
She’s in her office- predictably, she’d either be here or on the bridge. The hatch is open, which means she’s available to talk. Still, you knock on it and she looks up before nodding.

“Morgan, Kim. Something the matter?”

“Kind of.” Kim responds, and Tabitha frowns.

“Kim, sit down honey. Morgan, dog the hatch.”

You nod as Kim crosses the office and sits.

“So what’s the matter?” Tabitha asks after you’ve had a chance to sit down. “Trouble with the squadron?”

“Not really.” Kim responds, looking down at the deck. “I- I’m not sure I want to fly.” She says, after a minute.

Tabitha leans back in her chair, looking kind of surprised. “You don’t want to fly?” She asks.

Kim shakes her head. “I-I don’t think so.” She responds.

“Why not?” Tabitha asks, shooting a sideways glance at you.

Kim shakes her head and shrugs. “A lot of reasons.” She says, her voice soft. “I just- I don’t think I want to do this, Aunt Tabitha.”

“What would you want to do instead?”

Kim shrugs again, kind of helplessly, as if she’s struggling on how to explain it. “I’m not sure. Technical stuff, like mom does, maybe. It wouldn’t be so bad to stay here and work with the ground crews, but I don’t think I want to fly.”

“Hmm.” Tabitha responds, thinking. “Well, we could work something out to transfer you over to the crews- I’m sure they’d be glad to have you, but that would leave Morgan without a partner.” She says.

Kim nods. “I know.”

The simple response gets more of a reaction that anything else has so far- Tabitha knows how the girl usually is.

“What do you think, Morgan? If we moved Kim to the maintainers, could you manage?”

“Where would I pick up another Systems operator?” You ask.

“Japan, probably.” Tabitha says. “We could have one flown into Yokosuka and be waiting there when we arrive.”

“Well, that’s my only operational concern, other than that we’ve set the computer.” You say- you’ve got personal concerns, but you’re wary of second-guessing Kim right here and now.

“We could reset it pretty fast.” Kim offers. “Four hours, maybe less. But I don’t want to make things harder for Morgan.”

Tabitha looks over at you, wanting your opinion.

Sounds like she's made up her mind, and the quicker we do this the quicker we can get back to 100%. Sucks that we'll be out of action for longer, and that we'll probably end up with the other slightly unhinged child Wells, but this one's still a kid and would end up having to bail for a while anyway after this is over.

Woh-ho-ho. Easy there firecracker, you just told us you weren't sure and now this is what you tell the Skipper? I think Kim needs to take a deep breath and sit tight for a second. As much as I think we'd benefit from having her on the ground crew we already took the less of two evils with her. I do NOT want to deal with the other Wells. Not to mention I don't want to know what'd happen between the two of them once she's comfortable again.

I don't want to pressure Kim into flying for longer if she doesn't like it and if she is going to quit, it's best that she quits now before we get too acclimated, but we do need to keep the Fenrir mission-ready until we can get someone else in.

And pray to any gods that might be extant and listening that if we do replace Kim it's not with the other Wells sister. Chris sounds like borderline-Snek levels of bad news. Not a bad girl, just, not somebody I'd like to have us flying with.

I think that if Kim told us she wasn't sure, and now she's telling the Captain that she doesn't want to fly, she's sure enough of her own mind to think that she's not up to scratch.

And if she thinks she's not up to scratch, then... she's not. It's not a matter of whether you and I have faith in her skills and ability, because we DO. It's a matter of 'does she?' and clearly she doesn't. I like Kimmy, I really do (and I feel terrible for her), but this seems like a psychological thing that we... don't need in the backseat keeping us alive.

I agree completely. Self confidence is like oxygen to a flight crew, without it you're stone dead. That said, it doesn't hurt anything to make the final call when we hit port, since there aren't any alternative available anyway.
>>
>>2294421

Were the only options for that vote.

Speaking of, what was the point of that vote -which included choosing their speciality- if one of them didn't want to fly anyway?
>>
>>2294454
no, prior to that. There was "It's one of the twins, isn't it?" and another couple options, one of which IIRC was Katya's daughter
>>
>>2294454
I mean we can probably work through this with her and keep her flying, I just don't especially want to. Or maybe it was always intended for Chris to come to Japan with Frank and Merlin? Quads of truth.
>>
>>2294517
Not to this degree. Merlin had uncertainties and doubts occasionally, but she was never to the point of wanting to ground herself.
And keep one important thing in mind, too.
We're not Frank Bishop. No matter how much the Navy brass wish we were.
If we were Frank, we might be able to help her through this, but we're just Morgan. We can sleep in a running stream, shoot circles around folks, fly like nobody's business... But we don't have anywhere near dad's talent for helping people deal with their shit.

I think Morgan is more measured and critical thank Frank by necessity (Because holy shit so many sisters and all that other baggage) but he's not bad with people. However, by having years of our own shit to deal with, we probably know a thing or two on how other people can deal with theirs, we're probably just more subtle.

Like giving Jess the right questions and answers to decide to figure out the Garcia situation on her own. We should help Kim the same way, if we can, arranging a situation where she can figure it out for herself.

I'm hoping that changes when we get to Japan. I had initially hoped that it'd change when we got into the air but that became unlikely with the last few posts. Maybe Frank and Merlin can be more supportive. Hell, if Frank talks to the others they might at least stop being overtly negative towards us.

>>2294574

I agree with this - I don't want Morgan to be entirely antisocial because he's not Frank. But I just don't want to go through this bullshit with Kim. She was the better Wells in terms of personality, and with the Baron saying he'll give us more help than he did for Frank she'd be great for keeping us from flying the plane out of the sky, but I don't want a super clingy little kid in our back seat. It'd be nice to have a well adjusted person our own age as our RIO for once.
>>
>>2295172
>well adjusted person our own age
Where do you think you are?

But seriously, with what happened with Frank and our choice of plane, there's no way we won't have a witch backseater, which means pantless teenage girls.

I do hope we get to fly soon, though it looks like anon wants the plane fully operational first. Maybe we can squeak it while we work on the weapons? If any issues we have with them won't cause a crash like the Central Computer would at least.
>>
>>2295189

I'm just saying that Morgan is what, 25? 26? I checked the first thread and Kim/Chris are 13. I'd prefer someone that doesn't need a babysitter since nobody's super friendly. The other Fenrir guys are chill, but they're basically separate from the witches. There's nothing but tension on this carrier, and Kim already got sat down at lunch yesterday. Now she's not convinced she wants to fly, which is a pretty big red flag when we, a fight pilot, were just told that a war is gonna start by the god personally looking over us for our mom.

Someone that's gotten through the academy would be a change, too. I want an endgame Merlin, not a clingy, unsure Merlin.
>>
>>2295234
What if it's because of the fear of letting down those that she holds dear? It could just be momentary panic caused by stress and recent events, exacerbated by her own insecurity. Flying a bit could be the answer to the problem, showing her that there's no fundamental issue to be found other than her own uncertainty.
>>
>>2295244

Maybe. I won't be opposed to getting her to fly until we get to Japan, assuming that we'd also have the opportunity to swap without wasting any more time. I just don't want to push her into it, have a war start, and then make it either impossible to back out or have it cripple us when we need to swap at a more critical time.

But with her pushing back to us and Ice, and having a more specific idea of what she wants to do, I think we should get a new operator shipped out to meet us in any case. Either they get shuffled back somewhere else or Kim still doesn't want to fly and gets replaced.

Ice mentioning moving her to the maintainers does seem to point to her getting replaced, though. And inevitable future drama when she gets jealous someone else is flying with us.

[x] I’d rather wait at least till we’ve had a chance to fly a little, make the decision in Japan.

You think for a moment, having to remind yourself that she’s still pretty young- only 13- and that kids are notorious for swearing up and down they’ll hate something, only to love it when they try it.

And the rather chilly reception you’ve both gotten thus far from the witches may be playing with her emotions- Aunt Merlin, you’re told, had confidence issues almost the entire war, only eventually starting to disappear as she and your father became recognized as one of the best fighter teams in the world. While there’s no proof anything like that would pass down to Kim from her mother, at the same time, there’s no indication it wouldn’t either.

“I’d rather wait until we’ve had a chance to at least get one flight in.” You say. “Kim may change her mind before we make it to Japan, and we’ll be there long enough for a replacement to be flown in while we’re docked if she decides against staying on the jet.”

Kim frowns a little, but Tabitha nods. “That’s in line with what I was going to suggest. Kim, why don’t you wait to get in a flight or two since we can’t make any changes right now anyway, and maybe you’ll change your mind?”

“Okayyyyyy.” Kim says, drawing it out, disappointed. “I don’t think I’ll change my mind though.”

Tabitha nods sagely. “I know, but I want you to give it a try, ok hon?”

Kim nods. “Ok Aunt Tabitha.”

The captain smiles, little wrinkles forming at the corners of her eyes as she does so. “Good girl. Why don’t you stay here, you can eat with Anastasia and Morgan and I?”

Kim nods, and Tabitha smiles again at her response. “Good! It’s almost time for dinner, why don’t you head into my washroom over there and wash your face and hands.” She points at a door in the bulkhead. “Through my room there, the only other door in there, ok?”

You blink- dinnertime, already? You check your watch- it’s almost 1900 local already. Kim stands up and heads to the indicated door. Tabitha watches her go, then turns to look at you.

“That seems sudden. Did something happen?”

You shake your head. “I felt it through the VDNI link and asked her. She’s terrified of something.”

“Terrified?” Tabitha asks. “Of what?”

You shrug. “I’m not sure, she wouldn’t say. A mix of things. And our reception by the squadron hasn’t exactly been the warmest.”

Tabitha nods. “I was afraid that would happen.”

“It is what it is.” You say, as a defense for the squadron. “They lost a crew that they were apparently… close with.”

Tabitha tilts her head at your phrasing of it. “Is there something you’re not telling me, Morgan?”

Knowing ghost, and things mentioned previously...

Konnie and her daughter probably think there is enough genetic diversity between us and the Stalinka spawn for things to work, so they have the rape dungeon already built. Probably in the basement of Strana Mechty, maybe Megalith if it's as dilapidated as implied.

Telling Jess that Kim might be of help as >>2297534 mentions might also be good, though it could backfire depending on the results of the check and how the rest of the squadron feels about it.

This is smart. Supporting.

No, mentioning the Baron thinks he should have asked for more not to dig Frank's grave on the other side would not play well, I think.
>>
>>2297730

I am 100% in favor of spilling whatever we learn about the Baron to Frank. First of all, that's what his one-time lover kept publicly calling him, so if we take that name (which I am also in favor of) that could be a little awkward without explanation. Second, he wasn't ever given an explanation of the loa, Maman's support, or even that Ice made some sort of deal, conscious or otherwise, with the actual Baron in '89. At least, not that I remember, it might've come up in a random QA in the other '16 threads. And I'd like to see his reaction to us saying that we'll be given even more help in a better aircraft.

It wasn’t a deal but more of a gamble.

Use up all your magic to save frank.

You win he lives.

You lose you lose your magic/die

Least that is how I saw it. She basically played magical roulette

Cards, actually. Baron Samedi loves him some card games.

Also, sorry about the delay! writing. Gonna go for a couple posts- 2-3.

You know, whenever I say 2-3 updates, it's always 2, haha!

Huh, interesting now I’m interested in seeing Tabitha playing cards with Baron.

Will we get that omake?

Though I never did expect Ice to have much of a poker face
>>
>>2299372

Poker face while entering the spirit world and playing cards with a skullman who talks like Brigitte in exchange for a your love's/a goddamn hero's life? And you both die if you lose? I don't know what kind of face you'd have in that situation, but poker face probably isn't it.

[x] Spill the suspicions about Garcia to her.
[x] Tell her that she’s better asking Jess.
Tell her only what we know for certain and direct her to Jess for the rest of what's going on.
We have suspicions, but nothing concrete enough to make a serious accusation.

“I think Garcia may have been acting inappropriately.” You state, it coming out flat.

“How so?” Tabitha asks.

You shake your head. “I’m not sure. You’ll have to ask Lieutenant Cunningham for details.”

“What do you know?”

You shrug. “Lieutenant Cunningham indicated she thought he may have inappropriate pictures of the witches of the squadron-”

“Including Anastasia?”

You shrug again. “I have no way of knowing for sure.” You say- more diplomatically than you feel. “His personal laptop was lost in the crash-”

“His personal laptop?” Tabitha asks. “Why would he need that while flying?”

“He wouldn’t.” You respond. “There is no good reason it should have been on that aircraft. We did recover a memory stick from his personal effects, but it’s encrypted in such a way that we couldn’t get into it.”

“Which would lend the impression that Lieutenant Cunningham might be correct.” The captain supplies.

You shrug again. “Possibly. I don’t know enough to say. I’d suggest talking to Lieutenant Cunningham, though.”

She nods. “I plan to do just that.” She says, looking over as Kim emerges from her quarters.

“How do you feel, hon?” She asks, changing the subject away from Garcia- you hope your involvement in that whole mess is over now.

Kim nods, if a bit hesitantly. “A little better.” She admits. “Hungry.”

Tabitha smiles. “I’d hoped you’d say that. Let’s go get dinner, shall we?” She asks, standing up. Kim nods, then frowns.

“You wear pants?” She asks.

Tabitha smiles and nods. “I don’t fly anymore, there’s no reason for me to go bareleg.” She says. “And I’m married. They’ll get into the tradition more for you when you get back to Annapolis.”

Kim nods, and follows you out of the captain’s office, with the captain herself last out, closing the hatch behind herself.

You let her lead you down to the officer’s mess, where they’re cooking steak and lobster tails for dinner- Anastasia joins you in line just a second after you get there. “Evening, mom.” She says, motioning for the server to pile some more food on her plate.

“Good evening, Anastasia.” Tabitha responds, waiting at the end of the line for the three of you and indicating her table. She sits first, looking around the room at the other people eating- your squadron isn’t here, you note- and then at the three of you. She smiles.

“It’s nice to have you two aboard.” She says. “It always felt small with just the three of us.”

“Three?” Kim asks, looking around- just as Stasya takes a seat next to her.

“Did you forget about me, cousin Kim?” She asks with a slight smile.

“Oh! Stasya” Kim says, leaning over to hug the older witch. “I didn’t know you were here too.”

“Why would I not be?” She asks. “I’m a Bishop too. The first Bishop daughter, in fact. I signed my papers before Lilya.” She smiles slightly wider. “That makes me the eldest in our family, I believe.”

The others laugh a little at that, before your eldest sister turns to you. “Morgan, Kim. Are you ready to start flying tomorrow?”

However Kim says it will come out uncertain, I fear. Less risk of misunderstandings if we cover for her.

That's kind of cute for Stasya to be a bit petty that she's the eldest Bishop daughter.

Reminds me of twins who argue who came out first.

There's horror stories with surf and turf?

I'd hoped to power through the evening to get another post up, but I'm sorry guys, that's just not gonna go. I'll use the votes from this one for tomorrow though!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't us taking the flash-drive out of Garcia's effects illegal? What Probable Cause do we have to break the encryption? "I think he has pictures on there because someone else said he thinks there is" is terrible. No JAG judge would sign on that warrant, and I find it hard to believe a Captain would order it without backup from legal. Witch or no. If we are breaking in for our own reasons, cool I guess. But we could find child porn on there and nothing would come of it.
>>
>>2301010
You could also find a traitors diary or encrypted text that looks vaguely martian...
>>
>>2301010
Nothing would come of it regardless. Dude's dead.
>>
>>2301010
It doesn't matter legally, but it matters to squadron morale and it sure as hell matters to Ice since it's her ship and if Garcia was any kind of security risk, she damn well should have learned about it.
>>
>>2301010
What >>2301105 said. It's more of a moral obligation. Two things can happen, and both can only benefit the squadron.
>he was utter scum
Good riddance, nothing of value was lost. The squad will stop mourning him and will take appropriate measures.
>he was actually clean
At least we found out the truth, there's nothing left to worry about, carry on.
In both cases, an enormous weight will be removed from them, and morale will improve greatly.
>>
>>2301010

Probable cause is a issue for people acting on government authority, not a private one. Also I never studied that aspect particularly hard, but I don't think you have an expectation of privacy when you're dead. As an individual, Jess checked Garcia's personal effects and decided to keep his flash drive.

That said, probable cause is defined by "more likely than not something shady was going on", so now that we have provided Ice with the information that Garcia was hella suspicious, she has probable cause to figure out if something was weird. I never really studied military law, though I have no idea if that would even matter.
