You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Right now, you have come across a camp being occupied by a young woman possessing similar wolf-like features as Morgan. Of course, she was definitely taller and had brown ears and tail, but still, the similarity was there.

Artya quick trots over and sits down next to the woflwoman. She just smiles warmly and pats the ground next to her.

"Where are my manners? Come and sit down by the fire! It looks like we have so much to talk about!"

Romulus whimpers, looking to you and then to the wolfwoman, not quite sure who to listen to.

Morgan, unsurprisingly, is completely frozen in shock.

You nod. It was only the natural thing to do if someone offered you a place in their camp. You stride forward.

Romulus, sensing your acceptance, immediately shoots forward and starts circling around Arty and the wolfmoman, sniffing them intently. Naru cautiously helps Niko settle down on the other side of the fire from the strangers, while Nino quickly plants herself next to Artya.

Morgan is still frozen though, apparently still out of it.

"Well? Come on, I don't bite!" The wolfman laughs. "Well, not much, anyways!"

You just shake your head and make Morgan's decision for her, grabbing her shoulders and picking her up, plopping her down next to your host.

"Well, hello there!" The wolfwoman leans forward and nuzzles her cheek against Morgan's. Was that a common greeting gesture among her people? "I'm Janice! What's your name?"

"M-Morgan!" Morgan squeaks, caught off guard by the sudden invasion of her personal space, involuntarily flinching.

"Hm, odd to see you out here." Janice frowns and turns to Artya. "We're the only scouting party to range out this far, right?"

Artya nods, her face still masked. She points rapidly to Morgan rapidly and does an exaggerated shrugging motion.

"Hmmmm, so you don't know, either?" Janice turns to Morgan. "You're not from where we are, are you?"

"N-no." Morgan shakes her head quickly. "I'm just a regular human! O-or at least I thought I was..."

"Hmmmm..." Janice's eyes turn towards Morgan's antler bow and she nods in understanding. "Ah, so you just awakened. That explains a little..."

Artya then waves rapidly.

"Yes, I know that doesn't explain how she's out here in the first place." Janice sighs.

"So wait, you ARE related to Morgan then." Naru frowns.

"Hmmm, well, she's certainly from our tribe." Janice confirms as she hugs Morgan close and sniffs her hair. "Hmmm, yes, this is a familiar smell."

Meanwhile Morgan's face was completely red and her eyes were dazed. She was never completely comfortable with strangers and it seemed like her people were very... touchy feely.

You decide it's time to help Morgan out a bit and you lean forward and yank her out of Janice's hold, putting her in your own defensive hold. Morgan finally begins to calm down, and hold herself tightly to you.

"Hnnnnnnnn." Janice's ears stand up and a predatory grin slides across her face. "Found a mate on your own, too, eh? Quite the resourceful lone wolf."

Artya then taps Janice's shoulder and points at Nino with concern, who was hugging the fox girl's large, fluffy tail.

"IT'S SO FLUFFY!" She says happily.

"Oh dear..." Janice chuckles.

"Quit it, squirt." Naru sighs.

"Awwww, but it's so adorable!" Niko coos.

You let go of Morgan and then prod her forward a bit, encouraging her to actually talk.

"So... there's more like me out there?" She asks softly, tugging at one of her ears nervously.

"Of course!" Janice laughs. "You can think of us as a long lost tribe!"

"But I never had these before." Morgan mumbles. "I wasn't born with them. They only showed up recently."

"Hm, late bloomers aren't unprecedented. The animal features don't always appear at birth." Janice nods to Morgan's bow. "But some exposure to weirwood usually does the trick!"

"Weirwood...?" Morgan frowns.

"It's a type of tree that's common where we live." Janice nods. "It draws pure mana from the earth and uses it as sustenance. It gives it very special properties!"

"Like the animal stuff!" Niko concludes.

"Well, that's the popular theory!" Janice nods. "We didn't exactly keep perfect records, but our ancestors settled our homeland generations ago, so I suppose living near weirwood all our lives eventually had its effects!"

"Well, it's not unprecedented..." Naru frowns. "Human captives taken into Fae realms were said to have suffered similar effects. Turned into half-Elves, essentially."

"But how did I end up all the way out here?" Morgan asks.

"Sorry, I don't know the answer to that." Janice shakes her head. "We haven't tried to contact other humans for at least a hundred years. Perhaps if you accompany us back and talk to our elders we might be able to sort things out."

"Back...?" Morgan pauses, in thought.

You stand up, since you have something you want clarified. You pull off one of your gauntlets and pick up Morgan's bow with your bare hand.

And, as expected, dragon scales begin to grow on your skin, cladding you in a second suit of armor. Too bad the whole process felt really, REALLY itchy.

"Ohmygosh!" Janice's eyes sparkle. Even Artya's attention is grabbed as she quickly rushes over for a better look, dragging Nino along.

You tilt your head at Janice, interested at her reaction.

"That's quite the rare animal trait!" Janice nods. "A dragon!"

You nod and put down the bow, and the scales begin to recede.

"Ah, a shame. You nor your ancestors hadn't been exposed to weirwood your whole lives. Otherwise the effects of it are only temporary." Janice sighs. "It would have been quite something to have a dragonkin among our number!"

Artya nods in agreement.

"So... what's your home like?" Morgan asks quietly.

"Ha! Just like your normal run of the mill mountain town!" Janice laughs. "We've also got a few settlements along the rest of the mountain range. Nothing as magnificent as your big castle city over yonder, but we're well enough off!"

"If that's the case." Naru frowns. "Then what's caused you to come all the way down to our borders?"

"Huh, yeah." Niko frowns. "And a 'scouting party'? Sounds kinda like you wanna raid us."

"Or invade." Naru says darkly.

"N-no! It's nothing like that!" Janice shakes her head rapidly. "It's just... things aren't going well back home."

"What? What's going on?" Morgan gasps.

"The weirwood trees are dying." Janice's ears droop. "And they're what keep the soil up in the mountains fertile. Without them, we can't grow crops or hunt..."

"So you're getting starved out." Morgan gasps.

"We can still sustain ourselves for now but... things aren't looking good." Janice nods.

"So you're sending out foraging parties." Niko narrows her eyes. "Trying to steal from us?"

"Nothing of the sort!" Janice insists, Artya standing up for her defense. "We just wanted to see if we could make contact with the other humans. Maybe the could know what's going on!"

"Oh! I remember big meanie Elias was interested in them, right?" Nino wonders. "Maybe he or Lucina can help!"

"You would do that?" Janice's eyes widen.

"Well, not the first time we brought a bunch of strays back." Naru sighs. "You think Ozen would be okay with that?"

You just shrug and point to Morgan. They could just dress up like Morgan and hide their features. One good hooded cloak would do the trick.

"I guess that would work." Niko nods.

"He... doesn't speak much, does he?" Janice looks at you curiously.

"If at all." Naru rolls her eyes. "You get used to it."

"Indeed." Janice smiles as she pats Artya on the head. "Artya here is quite the quiet one as well."

It takes a few minutes to pack up and clean up the camp. Looks like Janice and Artya had packed very light, bringing only the essentials. You also note that Artya wielded a very nasty looking knife, while Janice herself didn't seem to be wielding any obvious weapon besides a long wooden walking stick.

This concerned you a bit. Not because she was a woman traveling around unarmed, but because she gave the sort of air of a person who didn't need to be armed in the first place.

Your group leads the pair back to the village. One of the villagers appears, lantern in hand, to inquire what you were doing in the forest, though Naru helps brush it off by saying you were helping two lost travelers you found. No further scrutiny is made as you return to the inn.

Everybody settles in, including you. Morgan lies next to you, curled up in your arms.

"So... Janice and Artya..." She mumbles, looking at the two sleeping demi-humans. "You really think we could trust them?"

You find yourself covered in hair and fur. It doesn't take you long to figure out that sometime in the middle of the night, Janice and Artya had migrated over to sleep on top of you and Morgan in some large, communal ball. Certainly their animal instincts at work. Even Romulus was in on the action, nestled atop Janice.

This also did explain why Morgan was particularly clingy with you.

This did leave you at a bit of a crossroads, though.

Well, you think to yourself, at least you still have your armor on so you wouldn't be crushed under the collective weight.

Niko is the first to wake up after you and immediately bursts out in laughter upon seeing you in your predicament, which begins to rouse the others.

"No faaaaaiiiir!" Nino whines. "Artya, you shoulda told me you were gonna do this!"

"Typical." Naru grunts as she tries to go back to sleep.

Artya is just silent and shakes her head.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry!" Janice blinks as she rolls off you, causing Romulus to yelp. "It's a bit of a habit among us..."

Morgan, on the other hand, gets ultra pouty and stands up, glaring at Janice.

"I'm sooooo sorry!" Janice bows her head, her ears drooping. "It's not in good taste to lie with someone else's mate like that!"

"I'll let it off this time." Morgan sighs, her ears twitching in annoyance. "Don't push it though."

After a quick breakfast and a word of goodbye to the villagers, you all begin your long trek back to Eisenwand, which was going to take a while. As you all march, you start settling into a kind of routine. Nino and Romulus seemed intent on playing with Artya, as they'd dash around or play impromptu hide and seek, all under the watchful gaze of Naru and Niko. Janice seemed to be taking everything in stride, and asked you and Morgan a few basic questions about Eisenwand and all the power players.

"MMmmm, this Havel and Ozen sound like fascinating people!" Janice nods. "A knight like you and a woman with incredble strenght? I'd love to meet them!"

"Erm." Morgan stammers. "I don't think that's a good idea."

You just shrug. Maybe Ozen will take it well. She seemed to value strength rather highly, and maybe she'd see Janice as a valuable ally against the Elves.

"That's... very optimistic of you." Morgan sighs.

You shrug again. If Janice wasn't particularly concerned, what could you do to stop her?

"Guess we can take a quick detour to the Monastery, then..." Morgan sighs.

Your slightly expanded party continues trudging down the road, Artya, Nino, and Romulus "scouting" ahead as they dashed along.

"Hm, yeah, now I remember something odd." Janice puts a finger to her chin. "A few days ago, we saw a HUGE wildfire to the east! Do you know what the deal with that was?"

You give Morgan a nod.

"Well, it's a long story..." Morgan sighs.

And she tells Janice everything. The long history of the feud between the Elves and Templars, and how you, Havel, and Ozen were all wrapped up in it, to the fire being deliberately set to provoke the Elves into starting an all out war.

And... that's where you all were now.

"Hm...." Janice frowns. "These Elves certainly do sound like a shady bunch, don't they?"

You give a grim nod. They were insidious folk that shouldn't be trusted.

"Ha, so then should we do something about them?" Janice glanced over to the treeline, her nose twitching. "That explains that weird, woody smell I've been sniffing. They don't seem to be hiding it well at all."

"Well, they probably just don't think we can smell it."

"Still, I don't like being stalked." Janice grins, her teeth now razor sharp. "And I suppose I should keep my hunting instincts sharp..."

You give a grim nod. Ozen wanted you to send a message to the Elves? Well this was a good opportunity.

"Right." Morgan nods as she carefully draws her bow. "Naru! Niko! We got company!"

Both the cleric and ninja nod, while Janice gives a sharp whistle, grabbing Artya's attention.

"So, perhaps we cement our bonds through blood, then?" Janice grins.

You sprint as fast as you can, managing to keep pace with Janice and Artya as they charge forward. Morgan moves just ahead, but you do manage to keep them all within sight.

The rest of your party, however, id not quite as agile. Naru and Niko get bogged down in a patch of high grass, but Nino surprisingly breaks ahead, casting some sort of spell on herself that allows herself to teleport forward.

And already, you can see the composition of the Elven spies sent to spy on you. Several archers a couple lancers, and a Forest Warden.

On second thought, this wasn't a scouting party. It was a full on ambush force. It was a good thing Janice sniffed them out when she did. The Elves are clearly taken off guard, but they're ready for a fight.

You move forward to engage the Forest Warden while the others split off to cover you flanks. Janice and Artya dive into the Elven line relentlessly, while Morgan stays behind to pick off straggles. Nino moves in and starts flinging fireball every which way.

But there was one opponent you were focused on. The Forest Warden, clad in their enchanted wooden armor, charges at, both its "arms" growing and molding into a pair of twinblades.

Your charge catches the Forest Warden off guard, as your halberd's spear point slips past its defenses and punches straight through the wooden armor protecting its chest. The Warden shrieks in pain as you continue to charge forward, pinning the Warden against a tree and driving the spear tip in even further.

Meanwhile, Janice was literally tearing her way through the Elven spearmen, while Artya was dashing in and out in a serious of hit and run attacks, slashing and cutting Elves as she past and slowly wearing them down.

Morgan and Nino weren't to be outdone, though, as Morgan drills an arrow through and Elven skull and Nino unleashes a stream of fire from her hands, completely engulfing an unfortunate Elf in flames.

And Naru and Niko were just finally catching up to join in on the battle.

However, alarmed by the Warden's cry of pain, a pair of Elven archers turn their attention to you, aiming their bows and drawing their arrows.

You decide to ignore the archers for now, instead focusing on finishing the Warden. Out of all of the collected Elves, this one was the biggest threat.

You apply more thrust with your halberd, driving it deeper into the Warden's chest with a sickening CRUNCH and it falls limp.

At the same time, the archers taking aim at you let their arrows loose...

One arrow harmlessly clangs off your chestplate, but the second manages to find its way into the gap under your shoulderplate. You wince in pain as the arrow digs in and sticks.

Fortunately, Niko joins in on the battle, leaping in and tossing her throwing knives at the archers and scattering them, giving Naru an opportunity to push up to you.

"You're hurt." She says grimly as a small trickle of blood oozes from the arrow wound.

Well, it was certainly painful and a bit debilitating, but it didn't completely remove your range of motion, and there were still Elves to fight.

You politely but brusquely bat Naru's hand away. You were still in fighting condition. You didn't need a heal just yet.

At this point, the forest was full of chaos as your party and the Elven warband duked it out. Morgan, Janice, and Artya were a flash of fur, teeth, and claws like an actual pack of wild animals. Romulus was even joining in as well, biting down on limbs and slowing his quarry down long enough for Niko to exploit with her daggers and throwing knives.

Nino, of course, continues flinging magic bolts in all directions, preventing the Elves from being able to regroup to mount a proper counterattack.

In all of the chaos, you manage to pick out an Elven spearman separated and vulnerable from the others. Halberd at the ready, you storm towards him.

Unfortunately, the Elven spearman is just a tad faster than you and thrusts his wooden spear forward. Naru attempts to cast a protection spell on you, but your haste to get back into the fight doesn't give her enough time.

The point hits your vulnerable spot: your wounded shoulder, stopping your advance. The spearman tries to pull the spear out for a followup attack, but he never gets the chance.

And arrow zips out and slams straight into his eye. Then a second follows directly into his other eye. The Elf doesn't even have time to scream before Morgan pounces on him, jamming her knife directly into his throat.

"Looks like they're on the run!" Niko pants as she wipes some sweat from her forehead.

"We can catch them easier than baby deer." Janice says and turns to you. "Well?"

Either way, you yourself were in no good condition to chase them.

You give Janice an approving nod, and she and Artya take off into the forest while your party stays behind to care for you.

"Are you all right?" Morgan says worriedly as she kneels down.

You give her a thumbs up, it was noth-

And then Naru roughly and rather coldly yanks the arrow out of your shoulder without warning or prepping you, causing you to flinch in pain.

"It's what you deserve for running off before I could heal you." Naru scowls as she starts channeling healing magic in your wound. "I ought to triple charge you for that or something. "

"Still, that Janice and Artya, they're kinda monsters." Niko observes. "Not that that's a bad thing or anything."

"They're so cooooool!" Nino nods. "I mean, cool for people who can't use magic!"

You nod at that. Perhaps if you could get Morgan's tribe to join the Templars, they'd be a formidable force against the Elves.

Assuming the Templars were in any mood to accept them, though...
