You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Getting back to Nabaal took a little longer than expected. A few reports of Zentradi movements had to be investigated, but all of the patrols had been uneventful. Either the reports had been false alarms, or the Zentradi were not in any mood to pick a fight right now. Regardless, the fleet had pulled into port to resupply and repair of whatever damage couldn't be fully fixed in the field.

Of course, this meant that many of the ships would be issuing shore leave. Not all at once, of course, but in stages to prevent the port cities from being swamped, and the Pacifica of course was one of the ships with priority.

And just like that, you wake up to find your phone filled to the brim with messages. Of course people were trying to find out what to do with their leave time. You quickly browse through the messages.

First one was from Lara, who was asking you to wingman for her since she was considering trying to hang out with Julie again. Interesting.

Then there was Amy who seemed to be going out of her way to tell you that she wasn't interested in shore leave, but wasn't opposed to you hanging out with her.

Ominously enough, Karla was wondering if you were up for more "investigations" with her. Though a blow was dealt to the Colonial Liberation Front, they were certainly still out there.

And finally, there was one from- Dorothea? Her message was concise and prompt but oddly light on details, only asking if you would be willing to attend a "formal function" with her.

You send polite rejections to the other requests before focusing your attention on Dorothea's. You tell her that you're up for it and ask what you should do.

Dorothea's reply comes back extremely quick. Almost too quick for an Admiral who honestly should already have a lot on her mind. She just requests you bring your dress uniform and meet her in the briefing room.

Heh, of course she'd treat an outing like this as a mission. You pull your dress uniform from your closet rack and somewhat reluctantly put it on. It's always been a bit too stuffy for your tastes, but you'll tolerate it for now. Fully dressed, you start making your way to the briefing room as instructed.

Thankfully, you didn't have to deal with anybody seeing you like this. Most of the crew had already departed for shore leave, effectively leaving the Pacifica a ghost ship save for what little skeleton crew she had left. You reach the briefing room and open the door, where you see Dorothea already dressed and ready. Honestly, now that you think about it, Dorothea's dress uniform didn't look all that different from what she normally wore, so it wasn't very jarring.

Dorothea, however, seems to pause when her eyes catch sight of you.

"Ah, you're here, Harry." Dorothea coughs, a nervous tinge in her voice. "And not a moment too soon."

"So what's this all about?" You ask, genuinely curious.

"I was just invited by the President to a luncheon. Nothing too spectacular..." Dorothea mumbles, wringing her fingers.

Hmmm...

"Oho, you just didn't want to go alone, did you?" You grin smugly.

"It's not like that." Dorothea tries to brush off your implication, but you can see her cheeks pinken a little. "It's simply protocol. An officer is expected to have an escort or adjutant present, and you just so happened to be the only person available."

Heh, was that what she was telling you, or to herself?

"Understood." You nod as seriously as you could manage. "It's a date, then."

Dorothea glows just a bit redder as she coughs loudly and marches past you, adjusting her cap as she does so.

"A-anyways, the shuttle is already waiting for us, so it's best not to keep them waiting."

You decide that's enough teasing for now and calmly follow Dorothea's lead to the hangar bay, where the two of you board the waiting shuttle, the sole occupants.

"So, is there anything special that I should keep in mind?" You wonder, still not used to this type of thing.

"It's merely a social function, so all we have to do is stand around and look nice." Dorothea sighs. "There will be representatives from the CDF, NUNS, and the local government present, but they shouldn't have too much reason to bother us."

Still, you couldn't shake the feeling that Dorothea would very much rather be doing something else, if her nervous hand wringing was any indication.

You simply reach over and hold Dorothea's hand in yours and give her a reassuring squeeze.

"Don't worry, it'll be fine." You smile. "Can't be any worse than the Zentradi, right?"

"Debatable." Dorothea replies cooly, but you could see her body posture begin to relax. "I at least know how to deal with Zentradi. Politicians on the other hand..."

"Yeah, I understand the feeling." You nod. "Always have some sort of agenda."

"Though I suppose they're not too different from spies." Dorothea chuckles. "Don't let Karla know I said that."

"Don't worry, she'd probably take that as a compliment." You laugh .

Before you even know it, the shuttle sets down in the lawn of a rather fancy looking mansion, set quite a distance from Nabaal's city center. In contrast to modern steel and glass skyscrapers of the city, this building had a more... elegant and old fashioned look to it. The building, or at least its facade, was built out of white marble stone, with large windows and columns and was rather sprawling.

"The Presidential residence, I assume." You say as the shuttle touches down.

"Of course." Dorothea nods. "Obviously they spared no expense."

Already, a pair of suited men with dark glasses march up to the landing shuttle to greet you.

"Admiral Nelson. Captain Neumann. The Madam President welcomes you." One of the guards says. "If you would please follow us."

"Of course." Dorothea says, her face already hardening into officer mode. You follow her example and put on your best stoic expression as well.

The guards then lead you into a rather large garden, where you could see a number of tables set up under the shining sun. There were dozens of officials, dignitaries, and officers present, and the guards lead you to...

To your surprise, the guards lead you to the table at the head of the party, completely unoccupied except for the President herself.

However, instead of some stuffy business suit or uniform, she was wearing a white, flowing sundress. Perfect for the weather, but it completely stood out from the dress code of the other guests. Then again, she was the President of the colony, so nobody was about to speak up about it.

"Admiral, Captain, it's excellent to see that you both came." She smiles warmly as you and Dorothea take your seats. "Though I am somewhat surprised you decided to attend, Captain Neumann."

"Well, I was invited, after all." You shrug. "Not much else too it."

"Hmmmm, I suppose." The President nods sagely. "Still, it's good that you decided to attend, as I do have an important matter that I want to bring up."

"Oh?" Dorothea raises an eyebrow as the first course, a simple salad, is served. "And what would this matter be?"

"Several, actually." The President clarifies. "But first and foremost, our defense situation here. My NUNS contacts seem to indicate that no additional ships will be sent, at least not in any major capacity."

You see the President's gaze wander over to the table of NUNS diplomats, who were talking among each other.

"That is sadly true." Dorothea nods in confirmation. "Unfortunately, other commitments and the need to replace losses in the Brisingr Cluster mean we won't have reinforcements for the time being."

"And on cue, I've been approached with several 'business offers.'" The President nods to the table of businessmen. "Private military companies like Chaos and SMS offering their services. Weapons contractors like the Epsilon Foundation offering the CDF top the line weapons technology. All for a price, of course."

"And why are you consulting us about this?" Dorothea asks suspiciously.

"Because the PMCs won't be acting under your authority, and I know you and the CDF don't quite get along." The President smoothly sips at a glass of wine. "Yet our defense situation seems rather... bleak. Unless the stories about you being a miracle maker are true..."

Dorothea pauses at that, her eyes subtly darting to you. Obviously she wanted you to say the first word.

"What's your position on this, then?" You ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Well..." The President puts up a thoughtful expression. "While I don't doubt your commitment to defending this colony, your numbers are comparatively small and they are worryingly finite. Reaching out to third parties would be an effective way to bolster the ranks, as you would say.

The salads at finished at this point, and the next dish, some sort of raw fish covered in a colorful sauce, is brought in.

"I must caution you on dealing with entities like Chaos and Epsilon." Dorothea leans forward, narrowing her eyes at the businessmen. "They're nothing more than vultures. Parasites that look for an opportunity to suck a colony dry before moving on."

Well, from what you've heard, SMS was respectable enough, but Chaos and Epsilon were definitely on the shady side, with dark rumors of Chaos dabbling in human experimentation and accusation of Epsilon selling weapons to NUNS' enemies. Were these really the types of people you wanted working alongside you all...?

"My piece of advice." You say coolly. "Is that you vet whoever you deal with very carefully. You can never be too careful about who's genuinely interested in your survival and who's out to make a quick buck."

"I shall keep that in mind." The President nods. "Though enough that! Let's just enjoy the food for now!"

You finish your fish entree, which felt... odd to you. Being on the move all the time, fresh seafood was a relative rarity so it always felt a bit weird in your mouth, but it wasn't bad, per se. Next up was a steak. You weren't sure what cut it was or what method they used to cook it, but every bite practically melted in your mouth. Was this the stuff these rich people at all the time?

All the while, the three of you made some small talk, though with the entrees finished and dessert coming around, the President decided to bring up some heavier subjects again.

"And how is Amy doing?" She inquires. "I heard she was particularly instrumental in the most recent battle."

"Well enough." Dorothea says vaguely. "Captain Neumann has done an excellent job protecting her."

"That's good to hear." The President nods. "And will she be making any performances in the near future? Her first outing was rather successful and more and more people are asking for another!"

"We... don't have any planned at the moment now." Dorothea admits.

"I think we can do another one when things calm down." You nod. "Under our security, of course."

"Hm, yes, I heard there... issues with the first performance." The President nods. "That pesky Colonial Liberation Front rearing its ugly head, correct?"

"That's right. I believe you were briefed on that." Dorothea nods.

"Mhm." The President nods. "And the incident at the Boneyard. Does that have anything to do with you?"

"I have no idea what you are trying to imply here." Dorothea casually sips her tea.

"Oh please." The President smiles sweetly. "I'm rather pro-NUNS, so I have no love for the CLF either. However, considering the high possibility that certain members of my administration may have... sympathies if not are outright members, makes the list of people I can trust very very small."

You scan your eyes quickly over Dorothea, quickly getting a good measure of her proportions. That was good, she didn't have any wildly excessive sizes beyond what any store could provide. Armed with this information, you step out of the shuttle and make your way to the nearest clothing store.

Obviously the choices were wide and varied, only limited by what you had in mind.

You decide the best course of action was to get Dorothea some simple, functional, and modest clothes. Maybe some other time you could convince her to wear something a little more daring, but not today. You simply grab a simple shirt, jeans, and jacket combo. Nothing too complicated, and the cashier doesn't even bat an eye at you as you make the purchase.

"I'm somewhat surprised." Dorothea mumbles as you wait outside of the shuttle for her to change.

"That they look so good?" You wonder.

"That, and..." Dorothea walks out in her new clothes, looking just like any regular civvie. "It fits perfectly."

"Yeah?" You nod.

Dorothea gives you a suspicious look, but just sighs and shakes her head. "It's nothing."

She then checks her reflection in a nearby window and frowns, her hand going over the tight, braided bun keeping her hair in check.

"Are you sure this is incognito enough? I don't want anybody recognizing me..."

>You look fine as is.

"I got a simple fix for that." You chuckle. "Just let your hair down."

"I suppose..." Dorothea frowns as she tugs at her hair ties, her long, flowing red hair dropping down

And with that simple change, it was like Dorothea was a completely new person. No longer was she just an Admiral in your eyes, but a woman.

"So what shall we do?" Dorothea wonders, unconsciously curling her hair around her fingers.

"Well, I know there's a carnival going on nearby." You point out. "We could spend the day there."

"I suppose..." Dorothea nods.

And the two of you start making your way over. It was close enough to walk to, but as you and Dorothea weave your way through the street traffic, you feel that something doesn't feel just right, yet.

You reach out and take Dorothea's hand and hold it tight. She pauses briefly, but doesn't protest as you walk together over to your destination. Up ahead, you could see the carnival, and you could already hear the shouts and screams of joy.

"So... what exactly do you do at a carnival...?" Dorothea mumbles. "I've never actually gone to a proper one before..."

"Ah, well." You shrug. "There's a bunch of games you can try playing to win prizes, there's rides you can go on, and lots of super weird food you usually can't see anywhere else!"

"We just ate, you know." Dorothea frowns.

"Well, there's shows too, I guess." You chuckle.

"I'll just follow your lead on this, then." Dorothea mumbles.

Jeez, not only did Dorothea look completely different in civvies, but she also acted completely different. Or maybe it was just because you were around? It was a bit hard to tell.

"How about some games?" You suggest as you tug Dorothea towards the game booths, which were naturally already crowded with both children and couples.

"Well, there's the shooting gallery." You nod the titular game booth, which was basically a bunch of paper targets put some distance away from a set of very small caliber pellet rifles. Basically just toys, but toys that could get the job done.

"Hmmm, I see." Dorothea nods as she picks up one of the rifles and inspects it closely.

"Oh, you're on." You grin. "Loser buys dinner."

"Deal." Dorothea nods as she nestles the rifle against her shoulder and you do the same...

Both you and Dorothea systematically start taking down targets, but you note that Dorothea seems to be blowing through them quicker than you can, apparently being able to sight in and fire faster than you. This catches you off guard and you try to pick up your own pace, but that only serves to make your own shots a little sloppier than they should be.

In the end, Dorothea beats you pretty handily 9-6.

"Don't underestimate the marksmanship of an English lady." She grins smugly.

"You're pretty good." You admit. "Maybe you should give me some lessons sometime."

"Hmmm, I wouldn't be opposed to some 'private' lessons." Dorothea nods with a smile.

"Here ya go, ma'am!" The booth owner says as she hands her a huge Valkyrie plushie.

"W-what is this?" She blinks.

"Your prize, of course!" The owner responds.

"Heh, nice catch." You grin.

However, you're suddenly jolted when someone bumps into your back. You turn around to see who it is and then freeze in place.

"Oh, Captain Neumann, what a coincidence finding you here!" Karla says sweetly.

How scandalous! Maybe we can salvage this by explaining that we were merely scouting out a potential venue for Amy on Dorothea's orders when we 'coincidentally' came across a woman who shared genetic templates with the admiral!

And it's totally not because we like redheads.

If Doro decides to remain incognito, we won't really have the "Admiral" to bail us out of things so I'm not sure if we keep up this charade since this might be something serious. On the other hand, Karla could potentially use this as leverage for sometime in the future.
