Breaker renamed to Void Strike and moved from Knight to Mage.

Exotic Weapons are now available thanks to research initiatives. These are unique weapons, and only one of each exists. If you want to use one, list it in your loadout and roll d10. The highest roll wins and gets to use the weapon, with ties going towards the highest-level character. Each Freelancer can only have one exotic weapon at a time, and can't equip them with runes.

The machine city's vast network of high-powered generators periodically go into some kind of overdrive mode that creates intense electrical storms, great streaks of lightning blasting upwards into the sky, and causing serious havoc with the local weather. An intense rainstorm pours down on the laser-scarred and blasted buildings of the Freelancer outpost, a small bastion that seems insigificant against the foreboding spires of the machine city. The outpost's technical designation is "MCO-2" but it's already being called Foxhole. Recently the company took it from the Scavs for use as a staging post for future missions against strongholds in the cIty.

The officers aren't saying much about it, but the story has it they're in contact with the Mage big-shots, the Arch-Scholars, over at the University. Something's got those space-brains worked up about what the Scavs are doing in the machine city. Something about breaking into that big building right in the center of it all, and what they might find inside. Whatever it is, they're worried enough to get the Freelancer companies on the case, which means you guys are going to be heading in there to bust some Scav heads. That's the important thing.

Commander Graves supervises the reconstruction of the outpost from the damage it sustained in the company's assault, including the big crack from the Scav transport crash landing. "This big old cannon in the center is gonna protect us from direct air assaults, but the Scavs will still try to root us out of here. We gotta dig in and be ready for them, so I want defensive emplacements on those high ground locations."


Choose 2 each for Emplacements A, B and C.

Auto Turret: Attacks the nearest enemy in range each turn.
Healing Station: Heals the most wounded Freelancer in range each turn.
Active Defense System: Cancel the first enemy grenade in the area each turn.
Fortifications: Reinforces nearby terrain and adds extra cover.
Traps: Tripwires and mines covering approach angles.

Intelligence reports from the Hunters' recon missions are starting to come in. Combined with Snow's initial scouting assessments, the Commander is able to come up with a good idea of the Scav disposition of forces. He consults with the scouting teams and with the Captain back at HQ, and together they draw up three possible angles of attack.

"We're going to start encountering Thanes on the regular now," Snow says. "Not only that, but the troops will include the Thanes' personal guards. They'll be stronger, better trained and equipped, and may have tricks up their sleeves we haven't seen before."

"What can we expect from the Thanes?" asks Graves.

"They'll probably hit hard as fuck, and be tough as nails," Snow says. "Short-range teleporters, like the Raiders. But they're not the type for tricks or subtlety beyond a basic ambush. Thanes rule by the sword."

Graves considers the situation, thinking on the best move here for the Freelancer strike force.

A and C have bloody big holes in the wall facing the centre, which gives us the advantage in a defense. Trying to hold onto them would be a waste of resources imo. Although the one thing I don't like in my layout is there's no healing. Which is what we need in an extended siege, a method of unlimited healing.

After much consideration, I have decided to reconfigure some modules before our mission starts:

Stay on your guard."

To avoid detection, the strike team leaves the dropship back at the outpost. The Freelancers make their way by foot, jump jet and grappling rope through the overgrown ruins of the vast industrial plant, their path taking them through geometric canyons overgrown with time, metal walls crawling with ivy and moss, humming with electrical currents and the reveberations of great factories below. Scav skiffs boom through the air overhead, and each time the Freelancers take cover and remain hidden, watching them pass by on their patrols. One of the skiffs gets too close to Foxhole's refurbished anti-aircraft array, and gets blasted for its trouble, going down in a spiral of flames. The vast machine city looms overhead. Even as you watch, it spews another storm skyward with the flash of lightning and the rumbling roll of thunder, and another rain begins.

The Freelancers arrive at the Scav depot, a vast ruined facility of which the aliens are using only the small part. Rain pours down overhead. Key positions in the Scav sentry line are taken care of by some quick Hunter knife-work, and the strike team passes through still undetected. Using quick-rappel mechanisms and sturdy cables, the strike team descends from the roof of the facility through an unused service elevator shaft. Arriving at the bottom, still dripping water, they check their gear and prepare to sweep the facility.

Solaaris made his way to the nearest form of cover.
It's machine learning algorithms had deducted from its previous experience that its old framework wasn't indestructible.
It would have to be more careful this time.

The hydraulics hissed as he bent down behind the wall, they seemed to move a little more difficult than last time.
Well, that was because half of Solaaris' body had to be replaced since the remains of its legs were scattered about the Scav encampment in many, many unusable bits.
Unfortunately, the "new" parts weren't exactly new. Graves had been kind enough to fling a box of spare parts at Solaaris in between missions, so it had to make do with what it had.

Solaaris ran the Oracle Protocol command in his admin shell.
It turned out that the company that manufactured the X-Christo models had restricted access to certain features that we're in development.
But now, since it had replaced lots of modules with older technology, they bypassed this restriction.

As Solaaris finished up the protocol's scan, it ran a multi-threaded depth-first algorithm in the directories which came with the spare parts that had previously never been used.

Wolf Team moves forward and kicks opens the first door. Inside are two Raiders and two Brutes. The aliens recoil in shock to see disgusting humans in their base, and grab their weapons, always close at hand. Rhino and Gamma immediately fill the air with lead and gun down one of the Raiders. Westree joins them at the door and nails the second Raider with a headshot, splattering the alien's brains on the wall behind it.

Tiger Team moves to the northwest door and opens it like civilized people. Inside are two Raiders and three Thralls.

Leopard opens the western door, finding no hostiles. He throws a battle scanner to the north, which pings the team's HUDs to indicate a Raider and two Thralls in a hallway to the west, and and two more Raiders to the north of the main force.

Vacia switches on her active cloaking systems and moves through the eastern door. She finds two Raiders and two Thralls, who don't see her due to her camouflage -- but they do see her companions through the open door.

Sigurd, Corax, Dawn and Thoth go on overwatch, while Myrmidon, Durward and Solaaris take cover.

Brute 2 stomps forward and swings his axe in a huge cleave aimed at Toll, Rhino and Westree. Toll ducks, the wall shattering over his head. Rhino suffers 2 break, and Westree suffers 2 damage, 1 break.

Raider 1 fires at Leopard and hits, but Leopard deflects the blow, reducing it to 2 damage.
Raider 2 fires at Dawn, scoring a critical hit, but Dawn's crash shield reduces it to 2 damage.
Raider 3 fires at Thoth, but the shots strike cover.
Raiders 6 and 7 fire at Phaws. One hits cover, but the other lands his shot for 3 damage.
Raiders 8 and 9 spread out to cover the doors to the north. Raider 8 takes up overwatch, while Raider 9 shoots at Toll, hitting for 1 damage (2 blocked).

Not only was Gallows late to the party, she had spent the last few minutes trying to untangle herself from Cayde, when he had decided to jump onto her to rappel in. With no idea how to use the grapple gun, and with two people's weight to manage, it had turned into a mess of cable and armour.

As she lands, sitting beside her is her good friend Thoth, crouching behind a set of cover. Next to him was Dawn, the nice medic that had saved the two last time around. Flying over their heads were the scav energy beams from the neighbouring room. "Thoth, next time we go out for a mission, get me before I end up delayed with Cayde again."

After exiting out of the command prompt, Solaaris saw chunks of wall fly off into the room they had started off in.
It looked around and saw that the team he was assigned to had already dispersed without any kind of detail on what the plan was.

It had realised that it was better to accept this rather than dwindling on the past as that data was irrelevant now.

Solaaris returned fire and got back into cover, only to be greeted with muzzle flashes, loud noises, and bullets flying past its head.

This room has it's fair share of baddies, but from the sounds she heard a bit north west of her... things were a bit more difficult. Regardless, they'd want to clear this room to prevent the squad from getting flanked, and if things hadn't died down, flank them instead. Dashing to the right side of the room, she quickly throws a dagger to the back on one of the thrall's heads, one that somehow got out clean from the explosion. Solaaris fires at Thrall 1, but he's already dead.

Corax fires at Brute 2, but misses.

Leopard, encouraged by Durward's rally, backstabs Raider 1 and kills it.

Vacia flanks Thrall 8 and throws a dagger, killing it. She doesn't spot any immediate threats in the hall to the east, but a commotion to the north alerts her that more hostiles will be incoming soon.

Toll strikes down Brute 2 with the Arcstrider, the lightning-charged blade flashing with electrical arcs.

Gamma throws a mana grenade north, killing Brute 1 and wounding Raider 9 for 2 damage (1 blocked) and 1 break.

Cayde dashes through enemy lines and strikes Raider 8 with his storm-charged blade for 4 damage (1 blocked).

Diplomat uses his grapple to hook into the room to the east and turns to fire, but there are no targets left.

Raider 3 retreats, triggering Cayde's Bladestorm, but the attack misses. Raider 3 shoots at Cayde, but misses as well.

Raider 5 falls back and shoots Cayde for 2 damage (1 blocked).

Raider 10 and Thrall 9 open the door to the northwest and spot Myrmidon. They both fire at the Hunter and both miss.

Drakes burst through the doors to the northeast. The huge reptilian beasts barrel southward with frenzied howls, their fanged mouths frothing with savage rage. One claws and slashes at Durward with huge metal-rending claws, but its attack is repelled. The other bites savagely into Vacia, its fangs piercing armor to crunch into the Hunter beneath, dealing a critical hit for 5 damage (1 blocked) and 1 break. Vacia falls bleeding at 0 HP.

Behind the Drakes, Raiders 11-13 and Thrall 10 take up positions in cover. Thrall 10 hurls a grenade, dealing 1 damage and 1 break to Gallows and 1 break to Durward. Raiders 11 and 12 both shoot Gallows, each for 3 damage, putting the Hunter into critical damage at -2 HP.

To the southeast, the doors opens revealing a narrow hallway and three Thralls. Thralls 11 and 13 both fire and miss, but Thrall 12 throws a grenade that strikes both Phaws and Flicker.

After witnessing the carnage in the northern room, Solaaris heard a crash followed by a blood-curdling roar.
Its HUD was filled with little red dots showing distress signals and it could see Cayde being pummeled by Raider shots after running into battle too hastily.

Solaaris ran into the room where the noise was coming from and its CPU missed a cycle when it saw the size of the Drakes.
There was no time to process this information now, Vacia's state was critical.

Solaaris took a medkit out and pressed a big red button on its side.
The medkit hovered for a second, then it made its way over to where Vacia was lying and landed on her arm.
A tiny needle came out of the medkit and a flash of green light obscured what happened next.

Vacia suddenly felt a little bit better.

She had rushed forward to try and support the front line push. When the wall crumbled, a feeling doubt shifted in, and fear began to set in as she gripped her sword.

As the doors opened, a grenade blasted her, quickly followed by two raider shots. She shield helped for one, but she felt her body almost give out after the second.

She felt like she wanted to just let fate take its course, but the shouts of comrades (and two medical streams of euphoria) she clambered back upright, sword still in hand.

Solaaris heals Vacia for 4 HP, restoring the Hunter to fighting shape.

Phaws heals himself, blows up Thrall 13 with a grenade, then runs forward and strike down Thrall 1 with his sword.

Toll restores Gallows the MAGE to health, then calls forth a protective shield around the MAGE, Durward, and himself.

Corax goes to reposition, but Thoth is already there. He goes to shoot Thrall 11, but Phaws has already killed him. The Hunter lowers his rifle, slightly miffed that his teammates are one step ahead of him.

Gamma casts Force Shield, surrounding Westree with a protective barrier. He then moves north while shooting Drake 1 with a burst from his SMG for 1 damage (2 blocked).

Westree blasts Drake 2 with his magnum for 1 damage (2 blocked).

Vacia stands forth, rejuvenated by Solaaris. She tops herself up with her own medkit, then recharges it by stabbing Thrall 12.

Got a promising lead on some decouplers you could slice in with a projector to generate a fake proxy image of yourself from a secondary reality. Then found out Thoth beat me to it and runs around in triplicate, replicating all over the place. When he hums is satelite-sat-nav impossible to figure out which one is doing the actual humming. I figure I'll try to do him one better and make mine explode.

So yeah, sobriety. I hate it. Turns out, being shot actually hurts now. All the grenades and unstable reactants in my kit for a bottle of beer and a handsome stranger. If I was drunk right now, I wouldn't have to listen to the Scav Thanes.

Westree devises and communicates a strategy to his team, calling out various firing position. He then bonks his head on a wall.

Gallows bestows a force shield on Myrmidon before shooting at Drake 3, striking for 1 damage (2 blocked).

Sigurd throws a battle scanner as far as he can to the northeast -- the little mechanical sphere isn't heavy enough to bash through a door or wall.

Leopard strikes Drake 3 with his storm-runed scout rifle for 1 damage (2 blocked), the reptilian cyborg's thick scales and titanium fascia protecting it from the brunt of the shots.

Flicker continues his miss streak.

Dawn blasts Drake 2 for 1 damage (2 blocked).

A Brute lands first, cracking the ground, while a Raider and two Thralls land behind him. Westree and Thoth blast the Thralls, while Sigurd, Corax and Phaws pour fire onto the Brute, dealing a total of 6 damage and 1 break. (Diplomat misses)

Thrall 16 throws a grenade at Toll, breaking 1 armor (2 damage blocked).

Brute 4 lumbers forward, swinging its massive axe at Thoth, but hits a mirror image. The illusionary duplicate poofs.

Thoth had actually been reconsidering learning that image splitting spell in the downtime of last mission. He'd not even been shot at once so far. Sure, part of that was everyone else just being a juicier target, but he had no intentions of putting himself in the line of fire just to put his images to the test.

Watching the axe of the towering Brute carve through one of his images from head to groin, he was suddenly glad that he had picked up that trick. "Not a scratch, you thick-headed lug." A flash of the future. Oh yes, that is awesome. "More than can be said for you. Ha!" Diplomat cleaves through both the Brute and the raider beside him. It. Whatever.

Thoth dashed past the stunting Hunter with an arm outstretched for a solid high five. "That was cooler than what I was going to do. Well played. Grappled? Slashed?" Regardless of whether or not he received the high five, Thoth pressed himself up against another corner and scanned the battlefield quickly for a target. Nope. Nope. Nope. There's one. He raised his scout rifle and aimed carefully. He would've been hurling grenades by now, but that Thane sounded big and angry. Definitely something he should burn. Or at least mess up the armour of. What was he doing? Oh right, Thrall. Trigger status: Squeezed.

Seeing a grenade pop around the corner and blast Toll, and Thoth appear just in line of sight and fire at something, Gallows knew there was an opportunity. Setting herself up against the high cover piece, carefully lining up her scope on the newly found Thrall's chest, she exhaled slightly, and pulled the trigger.

Turns out Thoth squeezed the trigger a little too gently. By the time he'd pulled it properly, the Thrall was already out of the way. And he'd managed to dodge a couple of other shots, too. Little fucker. Thoth planned on moving closer and lining up a second shot.

Aaaand then in his future mind's eye he saw Gallows slide in and take the bastard out. "Gallows, stop stealing my kills," he said, just before she'd even made a move. She then promptly ignored him, clearly too busy with something else to be exasperated. Most likely busy with sticking a thrall onto her sword then pretending she could control minds. Or whatever it is she thought she was doing. And she called HIM crazy. Sheesh.

Instead, Thoth moved up and towards the Drake, however bad an idea that may have been. Myrmidon looked like she was getting smacked up by that Drake. And that wasn't on. "Hold on, Donnie, I'm heading to you with a shotgun in tow. Try not to die while I get there. Or do, it's up to you really, I can't make you do anything. Not from over here anyway. I can still advise so, uh, don't die. Please?" A second or two later, the noise had grown a shotgun blast's worth louder.

"YO, DRAGON WANNABE! COME HERE! WHICH ONE OF ME DO YOU WANT, HUH?" He doubted the Drake had the capacity to even recognise that he was taunting it, but maybe the noise would draw it to him? Wait, why did he want it to head for him? That was a terrible idea, who came up with this plan? Clearly a moron so simple that they'd struggle to eat a sandwich without spreading it onto their face.

Rhino smashes through the wall with a furious shout, and blasts Raider 16 for 2 damage (1 blocked) and 1 break.

Flicker finally gets his sights aligned properly and hits Brute 3 with a piercing sniper shot for 4 damage.

Diplomat dashes northwards, cutting into Raider 16 from behind and killing it.

Gallows grapples north and slays Thrall 16.

Drake 3 lunges at Myrmidon, but the Hunter's Bladestorm technique lets her strike first, and she cuts down the reptilian beast before it can close its jaws.

Thane Elsis fires a charged shot from her heavy rifle that pierces the wall, blasts through Flicker's cover, and strikes the wall right next to his head. The Hunter sweats inside his suit as he realizes he almost got his head shot off through a wall. Moving with far greater speed and discipline than the rank and file Scavs, the Thane then takes cover behind a rusted hulk of machinery, sights, and blasts Rhino for 4 damage.

"Ugh, I think I liked the Lizards better when they just spoke in growls and hisses. It's been about five seconds and this "Hahaha, we come to destroy you and your fallen kind" is already grating. Get some new material, clod! We've heard this bit before in Saturday children's cartoons!"

And apparently that's exactly what she did. "Anyone else feel like the fight just kicked up about four notches?" He laughed nervously, already tapping into his teammate's helmcams and picking out roughly what was happening and where he should go.

"I'm gonna pour some grenades onto the head honcho. Haven't got anything to break that cover though, sorry. Fresh out, I'll have to pick some more up at the market. Donnie, Leopard, maybe you could try pushing up that corridor and around? Not much in your way then you've got flanking shots on the Thane. Then again that means you're going to be her first targets so, y'know, don't get too into it. Also don't take too long, because that was downright SCARY from Flicker's POV. Not sure if there's going to be much for us left to take cover behind."

Pushing up against yet another corner, Thoth retrieved a flame grenade. He primed it, tossed it in the air, and watched the pulsing red lines coursing across the metal sphere as it rolled and span in the air. Such a little thing. So much FIRE.

"Oi, big fucking gekko-in-a toaster! Have some 'a this!" He skittered the grenade at a low angle, down between the brute's legs, over any cover, and in just the right place to catch out that Raider too.

As Toll advances, and blasts the Raider, Gallows feels see the opportunity, nods a thanks to him and charges in. She watches as the Raider follows her as she dances behind it. "Not long now. Time to join your friend." She says as she tries to sink her blade into it.

Freelancers Turn 8

Flicker grapples north and snipes Brute 6 for 4 piercing damage.

Toll just barely evades overwatch fire from Raider 22, then shoots Raider 18 for 3 damage (1 blocked).

Thoth fires an incendiary grenade north, setting fire to the area and dealing 1 damage and Burn to Thane Elsis and Raider 17.

Gallows runs north and finishes off Raider 18.

Diplomat hauls Phaws onto his shoulders, grapples away, then sets down the mage out of the line of fire.

Dawn heals Phaws and strikes Brute 6 with a critical burst from her SMG for 2 damage (2 blocked).

Gamma guns down Raider 15.

Corax fires at Brute 5, but misses.

Rhino and Myrmidon take cover.

Sigurd shoots Brute 6 with The Hard Way for 1 damage (2 blocked) and 1 break.

Vacia throws a knife into the back of Thrall 19's head.

Phaws shoots Brute 6 in the eye for a critical hit, splattering the alien warrior's brains.

Thrall 13 tosses a grenade at Durward. The Knight's armor protects him but suffers 1 break.

Thrall 18 fires at Leopard. The shots are on point, but Leopard's entropy field nullifies the attack.

Brute 5 swings his heavy axe. Flicker ducks underneath, the cover above him smashing to pieces. Westree isn't so lucky and takes 3 damage.

Raider 17 burns for 1 damage. Escaping the flames by running forward, he takes cover and fires at Westree. The shot is a critical hit that lands for 4 damage, dropping Westree with a severe wound.

Raider 21 fires at Leopard, but the shots strike cover.

Raider 22 shoots Durward for 2 damage (1 blocked).

Thane Elsis burns for 1 damage, but seems unhindered by the flames. She moves to the east, takes up cover, and snap shots Durward for 3 damage (1 blocked) and 1 break. The Thane then activates her scanning pulse again, marking everyone with her targeting systems. "Come out, come out, wherever you are ..."

Gallows winces slightly as she watches Westree go down in the team cameras. She's too far to help but maybe someone could get closer to them with him. Durward, the knight standing close by still had his Medkit and if she could slay another, she could probably get another. But she knew at this point, it was a war of attrition.

On the note of Durward, she slipped into the cover piece in front of him, quickly spraying down the Medkit onto him, with him just in range. "There you go big guy."

Clutching her newly regenerated grenade, she pondered whether she should continue with her course of action, but with a resolve, she primes it and hurls it. As she flips the bird off in the general direction of the Thane, she mutters, "My I be cursed, if Phaws is correct."

This wasn't bueno. One minute Westree was killin' a man and the next he was bein' killed by him. He managed to stay conscious this time though. If last mission had taught him anything, it was that keeping yer eyes open helps in those situations when there ain't a robotic priest around to save your ass for you. In this situation though, there was one thing he could really do.
