Happy weekend, guys! Hope you had a good one, haha. I think everyone knows mine was trash, I won't whine here. Apologies for missing the last two days, I'll try to not do that anymore, but we'll see what happened. Work pissed me off pretty bad Saturday with that shit, it may be bad enough that I start looking again. I was pretty mad, haha. But anyway, no one's here to hear about that!

Archive is here for anyone interested: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016

This *should* be a pretty regular run for us this week, nothing ships for a little while yet, so there's no real time crunch right now. Still working on that new art, nothing on that front right now, but I'm hoping when this next paycheck hits I can drop some scratch on some good commissions. Probably will, anyway- looking at picking up a new rifle or a new computer right now too, so I don't know yet. Would you guys mind if I didn't get new art yet? Let me know!

“She’s enjoying herself.” You respond, nodding as Stasya gestures towards a coffee pot set on her desk. “She likes being able to control the parish’s affairs directly and swing the coven. Most of the other matrons listen to her, and most of the younger witches idolize her.”

Stasya nods, setting a pair of mugs aside. “So why isn’t she headmatron of the coven?”

You shake your head. “It doesn’t work like that in the bayou. The oldest maman of the parishes is the defacto headmatron, nothing else matters to them, and my maman isn’t in for that post for a while. Maman Bordeaux will probably be there another decade at least, she’s only eighty now.”

She nods again. “I See. What about you, aren’t you part of the coven?”

“It’s...complex.” you admit. “Kind of. I’m kin to it, so I’m allowed just about anywhere in any coven holding, save for witches private rooms and that sort of thing. But I’m not really a member. I’m expected to follow coven decisions, but I’m not required to.”

“I see.” She responds. “You thought about father’s offer?”

“What, come live up there between cruises?” You ask, and she nods.

“A little.” You admit.

“And?”

[x] I think it’s worth a try, anyway. Next time I talk to him I’ll see how he really feels about it.

You shrug. “I think it’s worth a try, anyway.” You say, taking a cup of coffee from your sister with a nod of thanks. “Next time I talk to him, I’ll see how he really feels about it.”

She nods, agreeing with you. “I think he’d be glad to see you. You know he’s still got that newspaper article about you and your friend?”

You grin. “Me and Flash?” You ask. “That’s almost ten years old now.”

She nods. “He was bragging about it after your school won the state championship.” She says. “Was saying you were a sure thing to go pro.”

You shrug. “There’s no reason I would have, though. I couldn’t have done it without the coach anyway. And Football wasn’t where I belonged anyway.”

She shrugs- it’s not a subject she’s very interested in, and it tends to show. Your highschool football career was fun, but it wasn’t who you were, and you knew it, even then. It was all just a game. One you were passionate about, one you were good at, sure, but at the end of the day, still just a game.

The two of you sit in silence for a moment.

“So what do you think of the Squadron?” She asks.

[] I’m not sure. I don’t really have anything else to go on in the fleet.

Hopefully they'll warm up in time, but right now things don't look all that great.
general coldness towards us, the Garcia mess, being told by a semi-official source to not get close to anyone, etc. Things could be better.

Billy and Una seem chill, as does Jessie even though she was the messenger for Kat and Becca. We get along decently enough Ana too so that's not an issue.

Might as well talk to her about it. At this point, the fact that the squadron was allowed to become this dysfunctional is a bigger problem than the actual dysfunctions. There's no guarantee something like this won't happen again in the future, and that would be a problem for us.

[x] I’m not sure. I don’t really have anything else to go on in the fleet.

You shrug. “I’m not sure.” you admit. “I don’t really have anything else to go on in the fleet.”

She nods. “I understand. There’s just some worry from above that assigning you here was a mistake.”

“Already?” You ask, and she nods.

“Some people think you should have been assigned to a different squadron and an experienced team moved over here.”

“Let me guess. Spellcaster?” You ask, and she nods again.

“Spellcaster is the navy’s flagship composite unit.” She says. “There’s two of our sisters there already, so it would be only natural for you to go there as well.”

You snort. “Would that go over well?”

She shakes her head. “Not at all. Most of us are already concentrated in 7th fleet anyway. There’s two of our sisters with VF-3 already, putting you there would just give more reason for people to start crying favoritism and nepotism.” She says. “And we’ve had enough problems with that since Father adopted us.”

You nod. It’s true enough- you’d heard jokes about the carrier and how it was basically a ‘Bishop family yacht’ before you’d left JBLM. You’d almost called out the security forces men for saying it- a comment clearly enough meant to reach your ears- but it wouldn’t have been worth the charges anyway. Maman said you can occasionally let things like that slide- especially when you know the people being small aren’t worth the time to correct. She also pointed out that very, very rarely did kicking someone’s ass actually change their mind- though it might make them at least watch their mouth around you.

“I’m sure their commanding officer would be more than happy to have you, though.” She continues, after a minute. “Their CAG and CO already sent me a message about transferring one of their Fenrirs over here and sending you there.”

“That anxious?” You ask.

“That eager.” She corrects. “Spellcaster isn’t what it was during the war. None of them are anywhere near father’s caliber, and even the witches are just there to put it on their records and move on. It’s a showpiece assignment, nothing more.”

“It’s not entirely fair to compare them to dad, though.” You point out. “I mean, he’s a talent, almost immortal if you ask anyone.”

“Except those of us that know.” She says, quietly, then shakes her head. “But it doesn’t change my point. VF-3 is just a shadow of what it was when Father flew with it. They’re only asking for you because everyone thinks you’ll be better than he was.”

“Even if I could be, that’s a stupid assumption to make.” You point out. “I’m only just out of type training and would be sitting in the FRS if not for some bad luck on another pilot’s part.”

She shrugs. “Not the way they see it. Witch magic follows family lines, we know that. To them, it makes just as much sense that male talent would too.”

You shake your head. “Dad flew for how many years before the war? At least a couple. I’ve only just gotten assigned to a fleet squadron. Besides, his talent only manifested sometime in the middle of the war, didn’t it?”

She shakes her head. “Earlier than that, but it doesn’t matter. To them, you’re just this side of a sure thing.”

“And what do you think?” You ask.

Stasya tilts her head a bit to regard you with one of those blank looks she has. It’s widely known that she idolizes your father- to the point that no one else has ever been able to approach him in her eyes. You come the closest to an equal, just for the fact that you’re her only brother- the only other Male in the family.

The silence lapses into a few minutes before she shrugs. “Too early to tell.” She says, finally. For her, that’s almost as good as an admission that she, too, believes you’ll eventually be better than he is.

“I didn’t take a commission to be the next Frank Bishop.” You say flatly.

She nods. “I understand, but you have to understand there’s a lot of eyes on you just for who you are. And there’s people that think they’re going to get in early and get you where they want you for their own ends.”

“Like they tried with dad?”

She nods again. “And Father’s patron admiral is long gone.”

You vaguely remember the funeral- you were maybe three or four at the time. It was raining, but mostly you remember the jets- a massive formation, led by none other than Nixon’s famous Tomcat- ‘Kingfisher 1-1’. Your father’s wyvern was the #2 ship in the formation- it was the first time you’d ever seen it in person.

“If not for him, I wouldn’t be here.” She says, her voice quiet, her eyes fixed somewhere far away.

“He’s the one that sent dad to crete?”

She nods. “I- we, that is- only learned that later. If not for him, who knows where I’d be?”

[x] Ask her about Crete again.

“Well, you’re here now.” You point out. “Whatever happened on that island happened, the what-ifs don’t matter.”

She looks at you, briefly. “We killed him.”

“What?”

She sighs. “We killed him. Not in the air, no one could do that, but we forced him to push so hard he died on the ground.” Her eyes are far away, focused somewhere past you- and, you imagine, some twenty five years ago, over a Mediterranean sky.

“What happened?” You ask.

“There was a planeload of defectors.” She says- going over details you knew already, but you stay quiet. “We weren’t told who, or why they were defecting, only that they couldn’t be allowed to, and that we were to stop them by all means necessary.”

She frowns. “Our orders were given to us by a monster of a man named Volgin. Colonel Volgin. We were terrified of him- he abused other subjects terribly, and was only kept away from us by the efforts of others.” She shudders. “It was understood if we failed and came back, they’d no longer be able to protect us.”

You stay silent as she talks- this is the most she’s ever told you- or anyone, so far as you know. “We were already active over Turkey before that- the Turkish air defense network was pathetic and our fandances were the pinnacle of soviet technology at the time. We penetrated entirely through their airspace before they knew it, and intercepted the target aircraft and it’s two escorts. Lilya took the first shot with her railcannon- it knocked down the first escort aircraft without any effort.”

She pauses at the memory, a vague smile playing about her lips. “We didn’t know. We should have guessed when Father broke away from our targeting reticules.” The smile fades.

“He was like- “ She shakes her head, pausing for a second. “It was like trying to fight wind. He was all over us- we fought back as hard as we could, our soviet VDNI gave us just enough to keep him at bay for a time, but even then, we knew. We were going to die there- this was the butcher.”

You nod- dad’s soviet wartime nickname has carried down through the years.

“We weren’t told he was there, but we guessed. Wyvern’s weren’t common yet then, there were only a few in Europe. We were afraid, but we were more afraid of Volgin- we had to try, to stay in it. He’d send his pet, Raikov, to get us if we tried to surrender, so the only way for us to stay together was to win.”

1/2 (maybe 3)
>>
“It was a surprise when he disappeared to us. The fandance back then had a blind spot- directly beneath the aircraft, within thirty meters. Father matched us by feel and instinct, it had to be- letting aunt Merlin break into our communications network and let one of the defectors talk to us.”

“He convinced us that the demon- as he called father then- could, and would, keep us safe.” She smiles then. “He was right, of course. He usually was, he was one of the good ones. He said we’d be safe and treated well if we surrendered.”

“So you did?”

She nods. “We broadcast our surrender and stopped maneuvering. We landed before him, escorted to our spot in the hangar by armed men in humvees. We waited for him to land and park before we exited our aircraft.”

“He looked like death.” She remembers. “He’d bled from his nose and mouth, and it had accumulated inside his oxygen mask, it looked like the whole of his face had been skinned, almost. He looked so tired and weak, leaning on Tabitha for support.” She frowns. “We’d hurt him so badly, and he was our best chance at freedom. It was… difficult to accept. We apologized to him, embraced him. We didn’t want him to die. We were scared he was going to anyway.”

“We were taken away to guarded rooms. They were nicer than any we’d had before that.” She remembers. “We were given new clothes and told that we’d be fed and kept there for a time. It wasn’t long before someone else- one of the guards- told us that Frank Bishop- the butcher, that was the first we’d learned of his name- was in the hospital.”

You nod. You’ve heard most of that, though you weren’t aware how badly Frank had been hurt there.

“He died there. He’d pushed himself too hard, and his power had finally snuffed him out.” She shakes her head slowly, her voice strained by emotion. “Ice saved him. Brought him back.”

“Tabitha-” you start, but you cut yourself off when she nods.

“Brought him back from death. It’s incredibly rare, almost unheard of, but not impossible. But to do it, she risked herself. She loved him that much.”

2/3
>>
“How?” You ask- as far as you know, once the baron Samedi has dug someone’s grave, that’s it. There’s no changing it.

She shakes her head. “She claims it was instinct, and she doesn’t know and couldn’t replicate it anymore. But we killed him.”

“Well, whatever happened, you’re here now.” You say again, reaching out to put a hand on her arm- which, for you, is about is expressive as it gets. Stasya, similarly reserved, looks up at you and nods.

“It all worked out for the best. Had we known about Frank’s connection with Brigitte, we may not have needed as much convincing.” She says with a smile. “I am sure your mother would have been more than a match for Raikov, had they ever met.”

You shrug- you’ve heard the name, associated with Witches without Borders, but not much beyond that.

Stasya shakes her head and stands up. “But it is getting late, and unlike you, some of us do require sleep. As they say shoreside, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here, little brother.”

You nod and leave the office with your sister right behind you. “Goodnight, Morgan.”

“Goodnight.” You return at your sister’s retreating back.

[x] Despite claims to the contrary, you do require sleep- go rack out.

You yawn, noting to yourself that, despite what other may claim, you do actually require sleep, and start to make your way back to the squad bay.

It’s quiet and the lights are set to low- they’re never really entirely off, but they’re dimmed enough that with the curtain closed over your rack, you can sleep easily. Not that you couldn’t anyway- your mother taught you the utility and beauty in being able to sleep anytime, anywhere, on anything. You can and have slept in a boat tied to a tree in a rainstorm before. Slept in running water, too, once, the night before they sent Maman in to get you out of SERE and tell you to knock it off.

You smile. That’s a good memory.

You crawl into the rack and close the curtain quietly, the breathing of the rest of the occupants only barely audible over the rest of the sounds of the carrier. The sleeping berthing on the improved Nimitz class ships- like the Saratoga- are unusually well soundproofed, though the nuclear-powered ship is far more quiet than the old Coral Sea was.

You’re asleep almost as soon as your head hits the pillow, only rolling over once so your back is against the hard wall of the rack.

You find yourself dreaming almost immediately, not that that’s particularly unusual. You’ve always had incredibly vivid dreams, and tonight is no exception. You find yourself-

[] In a dimly lit parlor filled with tobacco smoke and the distant sounds of a party

You find yourself in a dimly lit parlor, one with rich wood paneling adorning the walls and a haze of tobacco smoke in the air. A fireplace to one side crackles lowly, while bookshelves, their contents hazy, adorn the other wall.

“Ah, Morgan.” A deep voice greets you from one of the high-backed chairs facing the fireplace. “I been wonderin when ya planned to join me. Take you a seat, we got tings to discuss.” A bony hand waves towards the other chair, then takes a glass of rum from it’s place on the table.

You know who it is without looking- The Baron Samedi. Not your mothers wartime nickname for your father- the actual loa. You’ve never been quite sure if these appearances of his are just part of your imagination, a dream conjured up for whatever reason, or if you’re being contacted by one of the Haitian Voodoo gods, but, as your maman told you after you mentioned the first dream, always be respectful, always take an offered drink, and above all, listen to what the loa said.

You sit in thee offered chair, and without a word, the bony black man slides you a glass, one already full of his preferred drink- rum. “It be an important time for you, boy.” He starts, putting his drink back down. “Be an important time. Ya be in the same position your daddy was, twenty years ago. Out front an ready ta make ya own name in de world. In de right place at de right time.” He laughs. “but your daddy, he was too good for himself, you hear? Choirboy is what dey should have called him. All dem girls and none of em pregnant before Berlin. What was he doin. You ought to have forty sisters and bruddas, not the dozen or so ya got now.”

He shakes his head as you take a drink of the rum and cough- the stuff is incredibly strong, even in your dream, and burns all the way down. He looks over at you with a critical eye, the white skull paint on his face, curiously not obscured by his usual dark glasses. Glowing Blue eyes sit behind that paint. “Ya be careful with dat rum, hear? Strong stuff, that, an I don’t need ya to be getting too close to the spirit world just yet.”

He nods to himself, setting the glass of rum down as the party below gets slightly louder. “Ah, de dancers mus be hear. We goan wan to hurry.”

He looks over at you again. “Morgan, ya be in a privileged place. Ya be a smart enough boy, I don’t need tell ya what’s coming. Won’t be the same as your daddy’s war, but it be plenty enough for the world, I think.” He shrugs. “Not my plan, but I make it work either way. Ya be doin me two things.”

1/2
>>
“One, ya be giving me an mine lots a work. I don’t be mindin this. In fact, I be givin ya some help in it.” He grins. “More than we gave your daddy, but you be mindin how much ya be tappin into it. Dat fool done got too close more than once, till one of his pretty little things bargained for him wid me an won. Shoulda made her pay me more.”

“De second thing ya be doin is ya be helpin a couple others kill a man who got hisself away twenty years ago.” He says, his eyes narrowing. “I be tellin ya when he show up again, but he escaped his grave when he shoulda filled it, and I don’t like doin wasted work.”

He takes his rum up again. “I be sending ya help to do dis, too. Ya meet her later, I think. You’ll know who she is when ya meet her.” He grins. “I make sure of it. I make sure she know, too. You make your lovely maman lots o granbabbies, ya hear?” He laughs.

“That’s all I got for you, boy.” He says, downing the rum in one move and setting the glass down. “Finish ya drink and go back to your side. I keep an eye on ya over heah, just like I promised ta do befoah ya was born.”

He stands up suddenly, pulling his coat down and adjusting his top hat. “Now, I be goin downstairs. Finish ya drink. An one last ting. If ya be wantin to use my name, ya do it. Feel good when people respect it de way they supposed to.”

And with that, he’s gone, leaving you alone in the parlor, with a quarter of a glass of the Baron’s rum. Shaking your head, you finish it in one swift movement, waking up as soon as the last of it burns it’s way into your stomach.

The burn remains when you open your eyes, swimming back to consciousness just as your alarm starts going off. There’s already people talking in the squadron berth, though you’re not quite awake enough yet to make out who, though it sounds like Anastasia and Kim. Must be time to get up anyway.

You pull the privacy curtain back to find the two of them in short PT shorts, the plain grey tshirts issued as PT shirts, and in running shoes. Anastasia looks up at you as you swing your feet clear of the rack and stand, stretching a bit as you do so. “Morning, Morgan.” She greets. “We’re about to go for our morning run, want to join us?”

[] Nah, food first, then you’ll do PT yourself.
[] Sure, might as well.
[] Cardio? Not unless you have to.

>>
>>2274385
I don't think Morgan's scared of it, just tired of it. It permeates every aspect of his life, despite the fact that he can't actually use it. He's surrounded by magic users, and he's constantly compared against someone that could use it.
>>
One thing we should probably do is call home the first chance we get and pass along the warning to maman.
>>
>>2274401
I never said Morgan was scared of it.

I said we, as readers were, back in '89 and that affected a few of our decisions.

I am *all for* morgan embracing the spooky voodoo.

>Feasting Hall: Either Odin or Tyr.
>"Don't know why you choose Fenrir over a Raven there bud, thought we told you to stay away from that fucking wolf."
>>
>>2274401
I don't think he's tired of magic itself, more just the fact that every time he goes somewhere the witches try to dangle pretty girls in his face like fresh meat to try and get him interested.

Plus he's got awkward teenagers all over him and he's noticeably more mature than many his age.

So when/if he finds out what his actual power is it'll probably go over well.

Pretty sure BTW killing who needs killing isn't directly related to us in SW89, the Baron says "20 years ago" which would be '96, so it's something that happened in the interim years.

Go read up on Samdei. He's...'Hedonist' isn't the right word, but I really wouldn't be taking marital advice from a god-person that REGULARLY CHEATS ON HIS GODDESS-WIFE.
>>
>>2274731
So he;s like Zeus? That's a bit of a shame. Still something to look into I guess, if the waifus are good.
>>
>>2274726

To quote Wikipedia briefly:
>He is noted for disruption, obscenity, debauchery, and having a particular fondness for tobacco and rum. Additionally, he is the loa of resurrection, and in the latter capacity he is often called upon for healing by those near or approaching death, as it is the only Baron who can accept an individual into the realm of the dead.

>Baron Samedi spends most of his time in the invisible realm of vodou spirits. He is notorious for his outrageous behavior, swearing continuously and making filthy jokes to the other spirits. He is married to another powerful spirit known as Maman Brigitte, but often chases after mortal women. He loves smoking and drinking and is rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth or a glass of rum in his bony fingers. Baron Samedi can usually be found at the crossroads between the worlds of the living and the dead. When someone dies, he digs their grave and greets their soul after they have been buried, leading them to the underworld.
>>
>>2274750
So, the debauchery of Zeus with the responsibilities of Hades? Hopefully we can talk to one of the others next time, maybe they'll be less... distasteful.
>>
>>2274750
>his wife is Maman Brigitte

C'mon, don't tell me there's not something to read into THAT.
>>
>>2274764
I mean, she was a bayou witch named Brigitte, comparisons like that would be inevitable anyways.
And I I'd read more into Brigitte calling Frank 'Baron Samedi'.
>>
>>2274763
Sounded to me like we just get him if we've been having the dreams for a while.

>>2274764
I mean, it could've happened in 89 but we chose otherwise. I doubt she's literally a representation of his wife though.
>>
>>2274780

I'm presuming she isn't, loa Brigitte is syncretic with St. Brigid who in turn is very similar to the celtic Goddess Brigid - and is noted as being rather irish looking; red hair and green eyes. This does not mesh with how Morgan's literal maman is depicted.

Seriously, she's the best choice. If she'd shown up earlier in '89, I would have for sure waifu'd her then. She can clean, she cooks, and she's happy and joyful. And she's incredible at what she does.
>>
Also, as if Wendy wasn't waifu enough by herself, wooing her is basically a giant middle finger to all the witchy politics who're after our gnomey seed.
>>
>>2276704
I rather not bet all my chips on one waifu so early.

Merc commands quests does that too often.

I rather see who turns up first and how they develop.

>>2276711

>>

>>
>>2276722

>>
>>2276725
True, but witch magic can mitigate it a bit.

I still want a Christmas cake Wendy picture. Her current one looks a bit too young.

>>2276731
Eh, I guess? That depends what coven she is in. Since she is a witch
>>
>>2276725
Also it’s more like a 19-20 year age gap

She was like 17-19 during the war
>>
>>2276741
I think she's American Coven technically? I remember that her coming back with us after the war was a big deal to her since the English coven and the RAF were complete cunts to her because of who her granddad was.
>>
>>2276761
And we were born a little after the war 6-7 months.

So Wendy is 17-19 years older then us
>>
>>2276794
Morgan is 24-25 now. If there was a 25 year old age gap Wendy will be in her 50s
>>
>>2276794
No he's ot.
Wendy was 17-19 during the war.
Morgan was born around six months later.
Therefore, Wendy was somewhere around 18-20 when Morgan was born.
Thus making her 18-20 years older than Morgan. Not 25.
>>
>>2276808
Yeah never mind I'm a fucking idiot, ignore that.
>>
>>2276784
>>2276794

Fug. Alright, I'll bite.
War ended in 1991. Let's assume for a second that we were born in 1992 just for simplicity and arguments sake. That makes us 23-24 right now depending on what month we were born, let's just say 24 for right now.

Wendy was 17-19 in 1991, so let's just go youngest at 17. 1991-17=1974

Now it's 2016 so 2016-1974=42.

So Wendy is, at her youngest, 42 years old.
Since we determined previously that we are 24, we have 42-24=18.

There's an 18-20 year age gap between us.

There. Fucking math.
>>
>>2276820
Yeah I fucked up, that's what I get for not thinking.
>>
>>2276814
>>2276820
That is what I’ve been saying!
>>
Personally, I'd think Wendy is too old to be a good waifu. Even assuming we put a kid into her right now, she'll still be 60 by the time the first kid leaves home. And we can't really put many more into her given her age.
>>
>>2276817
Don't worry about it, I made the same mistake earlier.

18-20 years is still an uncomfortably large gap, though assuming Wendy's the same as she was in '89 she's currently the best choice due to not being unfriendly or being related to us. Is incest a seriously valid (if extremely unorthodox) choice? Something like half the females we know are family.
>>

[x] Sure, might as well.

You shrug. “Sure.” You say, blinking away a second of lightheadedness. You’ll have to call your maman after your dream, you know- she’ll know, more than anyone, what to make of it. You know, of course, he told you of an impending war- Korea, no doubt, the situation on the peninsula is almost too volatile for there to not be one. With two USN CBGs due to be on station in the region- not to mention one of Japan’s Carrier divisions- the force build up is already well underway, too.

You push the thoughts out of your head as you grab your running shoes and slip them on. If there’s a war, you’ll worry about it then, if you worry about it at all. While you’re more than happy to point out that you’re not your father, he did quite well for himself, everything considered, in the last global war.

Anastasia and Kim are waiting for you by the hatch. “Ready?” Anastasia asks as you stand up, and you nod. “Then let’s go” She says, leading the way down the corridor to the hangar deck.

Up here, the rocking of the ship in the waves is a bit more noticeable. Anastasia frowns and looks up, as if she can see through the metal above her to the sky. “Coming in a bit faster than I thought.” She says, half to herself, then shakes her head. “No flight today for sure.”

“We’ll still be working though.” Kim says. “We can get the computer up today, then start getting the weapons online with it’s help.”

“So how advanced is that computer, anyway?” Anastasia asks.

“It’s just this side of self-aware.” Kim responds, stretching with one hand on the nose gear of a nearby Raven. “The only things more powerful than it is are some of the supercomputer clusters in Seattle and Atlanta.”

“Wonder what it would be like to play games on that.” Anastasia wonders. Kim laughs at the question and just shakes her head.

“Ready?” Anastasia asks. “We run along the outboard bulkheads of the hangar deck. They usually keep it clear, we’re not the only ones that do it. I try to do about thirty laps every morning. I’m not sure what that works out to, but it feels like plenty.”

You nod. “You set the pace today.”

She smiles. “You sure about that, bro?”

[] Just nod.

You nod, propping your toes up to pull out your calf muscles a bit. Ana shrugs, and with a muted pop, her familiar appears. Kim’s follows a second later, and the two of them start off around the track, Ana leading. She sets what she must think is a fairly punishing pace- though she’s never gone on a run with your mother.

Or away from her, for that. You only made that mistake once in your teenage years.

Still, after about the Hundredth lap around the hangar, you do start to feel it a bit- neither of the witches even looks like they’re warmed up yet. You see Ana smirk some as she looks back to check on you- you’re keeping pace easily enough, but another hundred laps or so and it’s going to be hard to still keep pace.

Fortunately, She stops after about twenty more, having done four times her ‘usual’ run. She doesn’t look winded, but she’s at least sweating, and you’re fighting to keep your breathing normal. You pull it off with some effort, detecting a faint hint of disappointment on her face, and a similarly faint look of admiration on Kim’s.

“Not bad, big bro. Not bad.” She says, as you do your cooldown laps. Aircraft maintainers are starting to enter the bay from their own places around the ship- none of them shoots you so much as a second glance, so this kind of thing must be pretty common. “We can go get morning chow in a few minutes, they’ll get the lines open.”

“Probably want to shower, first, though.” Kim points out. “Then we can go eat and get working on the plane.”

“Or we could eat, and then see if we can get cleared for a flight before weather socks in ops. Should have a few clear hours.”

Kim looks dubious at the plan. “It’d make getting the computer up faster, and probably let me tweak it better initially since we’d have the in flight data available right away, but it’d make it harder to do since we wouldn’t have the chief’s support or the carts.” She says. “I could do it, but I’m not sure it’s a good idea, Morgan.”

Anastasia looks at you. “Well, what do you think?”

Let's not get ourselves killed right after we transferred here.

No need for unnecessary risks.

So did Kim actually kept up with us, shouldn't we be impressed?
>>
>>2280807
Kim popped her familiar, same as Anna. It's not particularly impressive with magic.
>>
>>2280826
I kind of expected Kim's magic to be slightly weaker compared to Ana.

[x] We’ll play it safe and do the startup aboard ship.

“We’ll do it aboard ship.” You say, casting a glance out of the openings in the sides of the hangar, at the red clouds filling the horizon. Kim nods happily as Anastasia shrugs.

“Let’s go shower and eat then, and I can go find the chief and we can get started.” She offers, getting another nod from you.

The rest of the squadron is already up as you arrive back in the berth, though thankfully the shower is open and no one wants to seem to talk much. Kat greets you with a nod, while Becc gives you little more than a glance before she and Jessie step out of the bay. You shower first, dressing in an OD flight suit. While it’s not standard wear for a Fenrir pilot- your actual flight suit is a self-contained, pressurized, armored thing that stays exclusively in the life support shop when you’re not wearing it. It’s designed to permit you to eject in the uppermost reaches of the atmosphere should the need arise- but it’s never been needed by any Fenrir crew before.

Breakfast is fairly quick- Kim doesn’t talk much and is clearly in a hurry to get back in the jet. She practically sprints her way to the life support shop ahead of you, acquiring her flight suit and helmet. While you don’t need anything other than your helmet if you’re staying on the ship, the Systems operator always requires hers.

She emerges a few minutes later, clad in the form-fitting, long sleeved leotard, her helmet bag in her hand and gloves already on. You turn in place and lead the way out, her footfalls muted by the slippers she’s wearing- Systems operators can’t really wear anything on their feet or legs in the Fenrir. It’s why their entire armored pod ejects in case of an emergency- they can’t wear a pressure suit like you do.

The chief already has the support carts set up as you approach. “Morning, sir.” He says, a cup of coffee in his hand. “Computers today?”

You nod.

“Alright, then.” He says. “We’re all set up down here, just hop up and plug in. Call down when you’re ready. We’re already hooked to ship’s power, so you can run whatever you need to up there.”

You start up the ladder right behind Kim, who cuts to the right as soon as she’s up, carefully climbing down into her armored workspace. The hatch doesn’t seal behind her, and you can hear the sounds of her throwing the few manual controls she needs to to start up the interface before it all goes hands free.

You sit down inside the front office and pull your helmet on, careful to cinch down the straps correctly before adjusting your head and finding the cable sheaf with your right hand, craning it around to hook it into the back of your flight helmet. While the helmet itself has the jacks for your implants, the odd feeling in your head never really starts till the links are plugged in like they are now. You shake the thought free and reach over to activate the VDNI.

“Hey Morgan.” Kim’s voice is in your head almost the instant you do. “I’ve started it up, it’s running first time checks and diagnostics. What do you think we should name it?”

“Name it?” You ask- she giggles at the question.

“All Fenrirs have a name assigned to their combat computer on startup. What should we name ours?”

Something short and sweet. Go with "Lobo" evokes the wolf feel and has a strong legend behind it.

Papa Legba

>Papa Legba is a loa in Haitian Vodou, who serves as the intermediary between the loa and humanity. He stands at a spiritual crossroads and gives (or denies) permission to speak with the spirits of Guinee, and is believed to speak all human languages.

Ooh actually I like >>2280991 a
lot better than mine seconding this.

Garmr
>>
>>2280991
supporting this, if not just because Morgan's background.
>>
>>2280938
>>2280991

This. I'd like a good background-related name, and that's as good as any other.

Sidenote, we gonna use the Baron's name like he suggested?
>>
>>2280938
>>2280991
>>
>>2280938
Garmr or Garm
Or this >>2280991
It does seem odd to name our bird after a Loa while also being told by another Loa to use his name, though I suppose since the Fenrir is damn near sentient it's a little less so.

>>2280940
Good run as always Ghost
>>
>>2281082
I figure that the Baron mentioned us specifically using his name.

> An one last ting. If ya be wantin to use my name, ya do it. Feel good when people respect it de way they supposed to.

He wants us to call ourselves that, since he's going to

> I be givin ya some help in it.” He grins. “More than we gave your daddy

Let us do even more insane shit than Frank, in a more insane plane. Also,

> I keep an eye on ya over heah, just like I promised ta do befoah ya was born.

Indicates a pretty close bond between our mother, the Baron, and us.

So my guess is the baron wants us, as a person, to use his name. Not just give it to an almost-sentient computer that won't give him any fame/renown/respect

Delaney

>>2281094
Yes I get that, it just seems odd to be called Samedi while riding in something named after another Loa. Like if Odin rode a horse name Thor or Zeus riding one named Hades

>It does seem odd to name our bird after a Loa while also being told by another Loa to use his name, though I suppose since the Fenrir is damn near sentient it's a little less so.
See, that's not quite correct. He wants US to take the mantle upon ourselves. Our plane is different. It is a near-AI, and our means of communication with the outside world. The translation of our supernatural efforts unto others. Papa Legba is the perfect analogue.
>>
>>2281116
I suppose, probably would make sense if I wasn't half asleep.
>>
>>2281113
Sure, but I think the fact that our almost-AI computer that translates our thoughts into actions via direct spinal implants is named after a loa that acts as an intermediary, giving permission to speak to spirits is some real cool symbolism.

As for us riding in something named after a peer, well I think the Baron would find that funny. And it's almost less riding in and more riding with in my mind. Like a 2.75 man crew.

I'm ok with this provided that it's Legba and not Papa Legba. It's the Papa that takes it from cool to stupid.

[] Rougarou (alternatively spelled as roux-ga-roux, rugaroo, or rugaru) is a legendary creature in Laurentian French communities linked to European notions of the werewolf.

Although, I'm fine with taking the dream/vision's advice too

Ok guys, writing now. Should have guessed 'express checkout' really meant 'bring tagless items and hold up the line for fifteen minutes about it.
