The storm came in the night, dark tempest giving way to dark rain. The color of soot, pouring down in stark contrast to the muted mists and edges of the Northern Spire...

You are Commander Reynolr of the Citadel Empire, proud captain of the CAS Brora (PS-4-917), an armed trawler based in the wretched Kraegsk Archipelago. Your presence here is tied to the nature of the storm-ravaged Kraegsk - north of resource-rich islands and a major naval warzone, the floating wrecks of great warships are carried by the currents to smash against the jagged coasts of the Kraegsk. You are to recover Citadel personnel from wrecks, protect salvage ships, and ensure that the enemy Republic of craven mercenaries and bloodthirsty revolutionaries does not gain control of the Kraegsk from their own naval base, at the opposite end of the archipelago.

Before the Citadel-Republic war, the Kraegsk was inhabited by a series of destitute fishing communities living in the shadow of the ruins of the old Astaeran Empire. Now they are forced into the service of the belligerents, powerless to resist the meager forces allocated to the Kraegsk.

While on leave, you've taken to something of a side hobby in joining treasure-seekers on expeditions to dangerous traces of the Old Empire. With all grace, you'll manage to live to see the Brora again. It truly has been too long.

You are aboard Mr. Bucard's airship, the Maîtresse. Several distant days have been spent investigating the ancient ruins of the Northern Spire - battered by a sickly Northern storm, Mr. Bucard's Krempt mercenaries have not let anyone off the airship in a week. Perched in your temporary residence on the bow searchlight deck of the Maîtresse, it has been quietly miserable, damp and noisy without the reassurance of your ship rising and falling under your boots.

It seems like this mission to the very end of the world will never end; surrounded by adventurers, cutthroats, and treasure-seekers, the relative honesty of your cherished Navy is nowhere to be found. Backroom deals, shifting allegiences, scores being settled - if the smattering of fresh corpses littering the stone underneath the shackled Maîtresse proves anything - and the pervasive void of trust on this damned vessel. And all for what? Relics pried from the grave of the Old Empire, half of the adventurers wearing those damned ruby Amulets of power and madness...

The storm is fading, but these thoughts have been hounding you during your solitude in the storm. You should be heading back to Scrap Bay soon, aboard the Brora before the end of leave - Bucard has been going out on his own during the storm, always returning with less men than he set out with, but has he been satisfied?

This damned expedition, full of damned men!

Welcome back to Trawler Quest!

I'll be finding my feet in this first session, doubtless - circumstance dictates that this will be closing at 8-9, but I had to at least start. Regardless, the decisions made today are crucial to the immediate future of this quest, to be fully explored tomorrow...

Happy to be back, and I repeat the apologies on my twitter for the long absence - I hope a few of my old players remember this quest!

On a trawler? No way. Especially given the seas in this part of the world and the level of tech on offer in Trawler Quest, we'd likely end up with borderline useless early 1900s single tube launchers, or even the dreaded submerged tubes.
>>
>>2263168
I was thinking of the single tube launchers. Hadn't considered the potentially shitty tech.

Single tube launchers proved basically useless in practice. Torpedos have to be launched in spreads, if you have less than four on a ship that can all fire in a given direction, you might as well not bother, and in practice multiple triple or quadruple launchers is desirable, but I can't see that until we obtain a Destroyer or the Corvette I think it was that we encountered a while back, Ibis I think, was basically a Tribal-class Destroyer in function. I think we will have to leave the Brora behind at some point, though it'd be a good escort to have for our other ship/s no doubt.

Idle curiosity combined at any point with the word 'eldrich' always results in a bad end for everyone.

Purposeful curiosity plus the word 'eldrich' usually results in a bad end for almost everyone.

Its that 'almost' I'm counting on.
>>
>>2263195
Ah. Its the spreads that I failed to grasp. Now I get it. Torpedos are not sniper weapons, they are shotguns.
>>
>>2263226
Pretty much, between distance, your speed, your target's speed, establishing that speed, range and angle off bow accurately, sea state, torps not running at a 100% consistent pace, the opponent manoeuvring and so on so forth, it's really, really hard to land a torpedo on an enemy ship by the time it reaches them at meaningful ranges in ship to ship combat. Instead you try to fill an area of sea with enough of them that one or two hopefully hit and even if they don't, it'll often force the target to violently manoevure or steer clear of the torpedoed area to avoid them, allowing you to use to an extent as a delaying/area denial tactic.

Undiminished curiosity clashes with your longing to return to the familiar, sturdy Brora. You turn your attention to the endless argument between your companions on this journey - a Scrap Bay noblewoman, Céleste Chapuis, and a crewman from the Brora, Mr. Kenneck.

"If it were up to me, we'd fling that damned thing off the side!" Kenneck is saying, pointing to the nearest window.

He's proven to be an utterly reliable man, deadly with his rifle and firm in the face of madness. He abhors the oddness and vileness of the Old Empire's relics - one of which is a ruby amulet of strange powers around Céleste's neck, another the gruesome statue - Visage - clutched in her pale arms. Céleste is his opposite - graceful and curious of the mad things where Kenneck is blunt and content with his duty.

"Closed-minded" Céleste sighs, as if she were scolding one her younger siblings back in her family's decayed mansion in Scrap Bay. "I am fine, you're certainly fine enough to try and destroy it - if it were devilry and evil incarnate, would it even allow that?"

"Doesn't need to mess with me, just with you." Kenneck accuses. You know the solitude of the storm has inflamed their language, but it still makes you wince. She has been acting off, though... "Don't forget where we acquired it - fanatics and cultists, worshiping it in their lair in the catwalks," he adds.

"And where do you acquire your rifle? Blood and industry that has worked and strained to produce that marvel, with how dead at its muzzle across this War?"

"Sir," Kenneck looks to you - you'd hoped they wouldn't bring you into this. "I'm not asking that you throw it off yourself, but the Ministry have mercy, it's ruination to consort with these artifacts too closely. We're here for technology, not... the mad things."

"Blood-soaked Ministry," Céleste grouses.

>Don't need to ask me. Céleste, we need to get rid of that damned thing.
>In spirit, Kenneck. Céleste, we should at least be hiding that thing, not clutching at it like an infant.
>Calm down, both of you. Who else can we trust? Breaking that apart over cabin fever is crazy.
>Lay off, Kenneck. You can't convince anyone if you accuse them of being mad in their head - where's reason to be found in that?
>The Visage is a precious relic, Kenneck. She's got a point - do you feel so uncomfortable around the Brora's guns? We know for a fact those have killed people.
>Something else?

It could be a useful bargaining tool with our questionable host, but only to be used as a dire last resort. We would be appealing to his madness.

>Calm down, both of you. Who else can we trust? Breaking that apart over cabin fever is crazy.
>In spirit, Kenneck. Céleste, we should at least be hiding that thing, not clutching at it like an infant.

It's probably not a very good idea to pay too much attention to the glowy statue cherished by cultists. For now.
>>
"Calm down, both of you," you say in placid tones. One lesson from the Academy that had proven true at sea was that stress and worry often produced rancor that was brittle - a firm reminder of the circumstances, from a man of authority, often sufficed to restore order.

"Who else can we trust?" you continue, gesturing towards the innards of the airship. "We've fought together - breaking that trust over cabin fever, that is madness."

They glance at each other, the vitriol in the air between draining rapidly. Kenneck sighs releases his death-grip on his rifle - Céleste shakes her head, averting her gaze.

"As to your concerns, Kenneck - well, in spirit," you nod, holding up a cautioning hand to Céleste's worry. "Céleste, we should be at least hiding that thing, not clutching at it like an infant."

"Yes," she nods begrudgingly. Kenneck, in his blunt way, reaches over to take the Visage - the noblewoman recoils, a hard look in her narrowed eyes.

"Kenneck," you caution, motioning him away. You reach forward yourself, thinking she would trust you with it - instead, she speaks with strain in her voice, the words tumbling out.

"You're not taking it away, right? This isn't some ruse? We should be heading home soon, you're not 'hiding' it so I never find it again before we leave...? Where are you hiding it?"

>It's better if you don't see it for a day or two, Céleste. Please, trust me that it will be no more - but we're both worried about you, your mind...
>No, I'm just putting it away underneath those bed frames. Your own metaphor, Céleste - do I sleep next to the deck gun of the Brora? Use when you need it.
>Just trust me. I don't have to explain everything.
>Give it to me. You're not healthy - it's messing with you, I want you to recognize that.

"Céleste, do you remember all that time ago, during the ball, where we talked on the roof overlooking the bay? The relics of the old world draw you into the past, away from what we have in the present and what we could have in the future."

"They are helpful, but they are dangerous. This statue is the most dangerous one I have ever seen. You said so yourself, after we got away from the corrupted airship. "It's better if you don't see it for a day or two - please, trust me that it will be no more..." Céleste grimaces at your words, as if some dreaded expectation has come true. "We're worried about you, both of us! Your mind..."

"You don't get it," she scowls, a pulse of red in the prostrate wretches at the base of the Visage. "You're more refined than Kenneck, but you're still a Navy man, hanging from a noose with praise on your lips for the hangman, the thrice-damned Ministry-"

"Céleste!" you interrupt her tirade, "You're slipping again."

"Freeing my eyes," she says cryptically, still regarding you with narrowed eyes.

"Look, Céleste, do you remember when we met? At that ball, seems a world away, we talked overlooking overlooking the Bay- the relics of the old world trap you in the past, away from the reality of the present and hope for the future. It's painful to see their hold."

"That's precisely what you don't understand!" she erupts, dangerously reaching for the Amulet around her neck. "What in the present is good? The War? This horrible archipelago, this wretched sea? I think I have more hope for the present than any of you - in the past, is the blueprint for a better future! What does the Citadel promise, more than endless, glorified War?"
>>
>>2263506
And what about your sibilings, or Sophia, are they not good?
>>
>>2263506
Her last words are trite and flatly delivered, like she's repeating the words of another. In a decidedly mournful tone, you reply, "Maybe, Céleste. They're helpful, I won't deny that."

"Thank you." she says breathlessly, and somewhat disbelievingly. She's obviously expecting the rest of the sentence to more disagreeable.

"Helpful," you nod, "but dangerous. This statue is the most dangerous one I've seen, at least in the hands of someone I care about, not those mad adventurers, fanatics... you said so yourself, remember? You realized how the Librarians in Scrap Bay went utterly mad, you were disturbed when knowledge just, popped into your head."

She nods slowly, the hostility draining from her features, leaving exhaustion in their wake.

"You told me to keep it away from you," you say flatly. "Is Sophia bouncing your little brother on her lap, telling stories, is that not good? Just... please, put the Visage down for a while, you don't need it. You don't need it."

Céleste is silent for a few seconds, then grudgingly hands over the Visage.

"Maybe," she concedes, a bare whisper above the dying storm.
>>
An hour later, Mr. Bucard's voice crackles over the speakers.

"Listen up! Uh... who's... right, the Navy man. Mr. Meier! Same message to anyone who ain't one of mine - we're stayin', but the ship's goin' back for supplies. Found things, wondrous things, and we're still diggin'. Or feeding people to the elevators, going up... come to the bridge if you want off this island. We need to log everyone, so we can load as many relics as we can to send back. Bucard out..

"Confession, sir," Kenneck says instantly. "Before you consider this - I don't have to remind you, our collective leave is ending in a week - I've been talking with some of the Krempt guys, quietly. They want out, too, they found a working ship in a sealed bay that can take us south... they say we barely made it here, can't abide by risking it again. A monster in the storm wall, remember that? With a hold full of relics and madness, blood in the water for sharks..."

Céleste declines to comment, her thoughts hidden behind her darkly glittering eyes.

>Kenneck, what the hell? We're going to see Bucard, and that's the end of it. I intend to stay here - there's still so much to discover!
>Don't go behind my back, conscript. We both want off, but we're not breaking Bucard's trust.

Its something to consider, but the reason we all came on an airship to being with was because the seas below were very, very dangerous. I'm not sure if the ship that been sitting here for years could make it all the way.

"Good initiative," you say after a moment's contemplation, "but next time, don't go behind my back. Could have been a test of loyalty by Mr. Bucard."

"They were desperate," Kenneck says, but defends himself no further.

"We both want off, but we can't break Bucard's trust," you say sympathetically, rising to your feet. "Let's go."

Céleste follows without a word of protest, though she opens her mouth as if to speak many times - her eyes are unfocused, still thinking over your earlier words.

~

Bucard greets you at the door to the Bridge, widely smiling.

"Mr. Meier!" he shakes your hand vigorously, nodding to your companions. "You must not have entered the Spire - so few have engendered to leave! There are too many wondrous things in there, people don't want to give them up - I've had to order some of my Krempt mercenaries to man the airship at double pay, they've been struck by the same fever."

You glance at Kenneck - is Bucard blind to the dangers of the storm wall? Does he simply not care that all who remained would be damned if the airship never returned?

"As to you, Mr. Meier, I could guarantee better quarters than your miserly searchlight deck - the Bridge, in fact! I trust a Navy man can help the crew in a fashion, and your ruby lady can substitute my own guidance over the Wall if Sir Bollard goes quite mad."

"We'll be returning," you simply state, and Mr. Bucard grimaces.

"You Navy men," he mourns, "holding back real progress. I had hoped you would stay, I must confess - the Citadel and Republic have continually declined my efforts."

"There are official channels," you observe, alarmed at the prospect of revolutionary presence here.

"Still, you have kept your mind more open than most. I trust I will encounter you in the detritus of the Bay," Mr. Bucard says, turning and leaving on the bridge, a dozen Krempt mercenaries trailing in his wake.

"I almost wish I could stay," Céleste whispers, drawing an alarmed glare from Kenneck.

"I don't think I want to," she continues after a pause, half-aware, her Amulet flashing red. You blink -

- and for a moment, you see her entirely differently, snarling and spiteful, eyes full of mistrust, storming out of the Bridge to her precious Visage.

You blink again, and Miss Chapuis is once again placid and hesitant. "Your gentle words, Reynolr. An island in this madness..."

Will try to post in the morning, apologies. Was hauling the laptop around campus updating tonight - updates will be somewhat more intermittent than before, but I am not disappearing again. Thank you for playing, and again, apologies for the shitty run tonight.

You know the first thing we need when we get back? A copy of the military Newspaper.

Keep the girl away from the toys, lest she turn into a starspawn.

Yay trawler question is back!

I'm kinda sad we didn't get to go up the spire, but at the same time the ominous red glow in this picture makes me glad we're clearing out. I hope Bucard makes it back, he's an interesting character.

So I've reread the archives again and I've spotted things to take care of when we get back.

First, make sure we've offloaded the prisoners we took from the civvie escort we fought.
Second, we towed that floating tin can all the way back to the Bay, so we need to know what we got out of that.
Third, we still have all the tech we picked up from the hydro station and the small area of the techno fortress that we still have to do something with.

I'm sorta against just giving them to the scientist cause they're gonna ask where we got them and I'm not inclined to tell them we have almost free access into the fortress or tell them about the AI yet. Personally I was maybe thinking we turn that place into a personal base but we will see. Either way if we do sell it to the scientists we need a no questions asked kinda thing going on. Conversely we could show the stuff to Celeste first and see what she could tell us.

One last thing is that barrel of Klesia we found. We need to offload that to command real quick, preferably with armed guards. That is a strategic asset and if we turn that into command with the hull of that escort we could probably trade that influence in to get much needed crew and upgrades to the Brora, or, if the opportunity arises, maybe even trade up in ship if it looks like it should happen.

Might be more things we need to address, will look again later.

Apologies for the unannounced lack of a run yesterday, everybody. The QM curse wasted no time in 2018 - sore throat started last weekend, and everything else followed to a miserable sickness. I will be posting fairly broad and lore-filled posts for the next days, but there will be no 3-4 hr block of solid runtime, I don't have the energy for that. Apologies again, and thank you for playing.

I'm pretty sure I have stockholm syndrome at this point. This thread could die right now and I'd still be just as hyped if / when another one popped up.
>>
>>2279585
I still have a little hype for a quest that hasn't run since August of 2015.

QM said 'get hype' when he announced his next session and so I did.

I've been waiting for commander quest since what, 2011? 12? And Diarca damnit, I want to experiment with the suit of armour we found in the ruins

He's got a twitter you know

I'm really sorry guys, sickness+college (mostly the latter now) is a beast I'm still struggling to balance with my recreational stuff. Expect a new thread in 1-2 weeks, with a proper return to ships and sea combat.

Apologies again. This was really shitty of me.

Not at all, sir. Real life is real life (and a part of the QM curse that no one talks about).

You do an awesome quest, and if that means we have to wait, we'll wait warmly.

And don't forget to archive for future players.
