You look up from the ditch you’re in, beginning your struggle up the slick mud back up to the blackened trucks. Ahead of you, Dok stands over the dead American, a rather wicked hacksaw in his hands. You can guess how the fight proceeded after you had fallen, medical instruments strewn over the ground in a haphazard pattern around the open bag.

The soldier he had stood over looks on with a dim look, his face still as stone and his eyes glazed over like a cloud covered sky. The corpse flies had already began their feast, picking at various places on his face with razor sharp jaws. Good meat going to waste. Dok looks back at you, then to the corpse.

“Too bad, he was a good man and a decent shot. Is Penrod still in the truck?”

You nod in response, and Dok moves around to the back. He lifts the canvas, the smell of viscera and blood wafting out in a wave. Penrod lies face down in a sticky pool of red, covered with various casings and pieces of fractured metal. Any trace of candles or halls of the choir cannot be found. You wonder if perhaps the non-stop fighting is breaking you slowly, driving you to madness. Were it not for Nixie, you may have died inside the truck stuck in your delusions.

You become acutely aware that the breast pocket of your uniform feels light, and quickly raise a hand to press against it softly. The space folds in on itself, no fairy inside to hold it open. A knot of worry ties itself in the center of your stomach. Dok drops the canvas of the truck, closing the curtain on the grisly scene.

“Mind helping me with the wounded Jäger? I’m sure some of them don’t have much time. Best you learn some basic medical as well.”

You glance around, anxiety gnawing at you. Nixie could be anywhere, and it’d require the few precious minutes that some of the men have left just to find her.

You nod at Dok, crouching down to help him pick up the medical tools that scatter the ground. You believe Nixie should be okay, at least that’s what you tell yourself. You try not to imagine the corpse flies and other scavengers picking at her small form piece by piece. Had she left you in the caves you would have suffered the same fate, torn piece by piece by the Rot Worm colony with no way out. She didn’t leave however, she very much rescued you. She dragged you from the Choir Hall as well, working herself as hard as she could.

Dok remains silent as he picks up the last of the instruments and sets them into the bag, a neutral look set across his face.

“Time to see what seeds Death has sown. Hurry along now Jäger. Lives hang in the balance.”

You mentally add one to whatever number of lives that is. Surely Nixie wouldn’t venture out from her spot and risk being seen. That only left her being removed in some manner or falling loose. If it was the later, she must be unconscious or worse. You think as you walk, and thankfully Dok doesn’t pose any questions to you as you travel between the two trucks.

You see Hauptmann, crouched next to another soldier who lies in the mud. His breathe comes out as a rattle, flecks of spittle and blood spraying out along his cheeks with each exhalation. A small trench knife pierces his chest, and a wicked slash has bisected his face down the center. Dok kneels and sets to work, opening has bag and cleaning each instrument by pouring alcohol over the end. The clear liquid falls to the earth, mixing with the blood in the mire underfoot.

“The facial wound is superficial Jäger, but one of his lungs is punctured and filling with blood. Short of a miracle there isn’t much I can do here with the tools at hand. We’ll move to the next, see what we can do there and all we can do is hope he survives.”

Dok stands, the face of the soldier he knelt next to hardening with determination. As you go to walk away, the man pulls at your trousers and looks up at you.

“Can you..find me a cigarette? I want one last smoke before I go. Punctured lung or not I want a smoke.”

You nod down at him, and throw a brief salute. You’re not quite sure however where to get any cigarettes. Siegfried doesn’t smoke so you can’t really bum one off of him, and you don’t recall having ever seen Dok or Hauptmann smoke. The man’s time left is short if what Dok says is true, as such you’d best hurry.

Where do you look for a smoke?

Ask Hauptmann and Dok where they got their smokes while standing guard

You walk towards Hauptmann, remembering the previous day when he was smoking while standing guard. It seems like your graduation was years gone now, already having fallen into the cycle of soldiering. The captain looks up at your approach.

“Jäger, I thought you were helping the Dok. Shirking your duties?”

“No sir, trying to help another comrade.”

Hauptmann nods at you, looking over your shoulder to the man lying in the mud.

“Johannes? Let me guess, man wants another smoke?” You can tell Hauptmann is dismayed at the turn of events though he tries to put on a strong front with a chuckle.

You nod, and Hauptmann sighs as he pulls out a stained and crushed pack of cigarettes.

“Go share one with him if you can. Man needs it in his moments.”

You walk back over to the man named Johannes, and pull a cigarette from the pack which he takes gratefully.

Smoking one with him! Updating in just a second getting something sorted

You grab one for yourself, though you’ve never smoked before. You’re not one to snub a man’s dying wishes, especially those of a comrade. The lighter bursts to life in your other hand, a dancing flame that moves rhythmically. You light his first, the rattle in his breathing more pronounced than earlier. The blood on his lips stains the white of the cigarette, and you watch as it travels up the paper like a spiderweb.

You light your own, and take a quick drag. The smoke burns your lungs, though not as bad as the evacuated fumes from the cannon you grew up around. Your head spins as you exhale, a numb, heavy feeling setting in over your limbs. The silence reigns for a time, a rare appearance over the battlefield.

“Thank you. You’re a good man Jäger. I had you pegged for a snotty nosed officer boy at this age. Way you stood up to your commanding dickhead was damn nice, the men all heard it. You and that Siegfried are one hell of a pair.” His speech is interrupted by intermittent coughs and hacks, along with the deep underlying wheeze that tries to work its way forward.

“Glad we got to save your ass Jäger. Most of the guys wanted to stay back instead of jumping into another worm pit, and some were sore over Lutz finally snapping but I think it was the right call now.” Johannes talks around his cigarette, the bright ember bobbing with his words.

“You got a girl Jäger?”

You think for a moment, a few names and faces coming to mind. You can’t help but settle on one however, and find slight solace in the fact she isn’t here at the moment. You nod down at Johannes, taking another drag on the rolled tobacco.

“Yeah, I think I do. Her name is Nixie.”

“Interesting name, doesn’t sound very common but I won’t question. Not in much a state to do it anyways.” Johannes breathes in deep, the rattle shaking his chest as another line of blood trails out the corner of his mouth.

“I met a girl once, inside one of the houses of course. Still, I felt something special there. The way her eyes sparkled, and in her laugh. Maybe I’d been on the front too long, but I’m not sure. Regardless…” Johannes falters, a wet cough seizing his body and sending the cigarette spiraling through the air and into the mud.

You light another, handing it off to him and he nods in thanks. His eyes look sunken into their sockets, his face pallid and taught.

“In that moment...I think I knew what all those people of old saw in families. I wish this war was over Jäger...I wish I could have a family.” Johannes takes a deep inhalation that sends him coughing, a grimace replacing the wistful smile.

“I think I’m done fighting Jäger...good luck with your girl. Maybe you can finish all this and have a family. Name a kid after me will you.” Johannes laughs at his own joke, a weak chuckle that turns into a heavy rattle. The cigarette drops from his mouth, the embers flying through the sky as it bounces off the breast of his uniform.

You look down to your left, pulling another cigarette from the pack and lighting it. You stare at the dancing flame for a moment, the light reminiscent of when Nixie had flown down to your rescue in the cave. Shaking your head, you take the lit cigarette and hold it out to Johannes. It takes a moment, but you realize that the man had finally passed, no hand coming to take the cigarette from you.

You stand up, fighting back the tight knot in your stomach at the loss of a fellow soldier. As you look around you take the cigarette in your mouth, finishing it in his honor.

You walk to Dok, set on finding your friend. Maybe she means more, you aren’t quite sure. Dok doesn’t look up as you approach, his hands buried in an unconscious soldier’s arm.

“Johannes is gone? Hauptmann told me you gave him someone to smoke with in his final moments.” Dok wipes his brow, uncaring of the blood he smears over his head.

“I can tell by the way you’re standing there you have something to ask Jäger, go ahead.”

You finish the cigarette, flicking the butt off in a lazy arc into the mud.

“Sir, I need to search for a friend. I’m worried for their health.”

Dok glances back at you, a soft look on his face.

“Don’t let me keep you, I can handle this here. Johannes was the only serious one, god rest him.”

You thank him, and turn to survey the area.

You walk back towards the ditch you fought your melee in, acutely aware of how much flailing about you did as you fell down into it. You pass by the body of Johannes, looking off into the grey sky. A few more steps and you pass by the man Dok had been defending, along with the American that tried to get to him. You try not to look at the back of the truck, pushing the thoughts of earlier away.

You follow the slicked mud path that your body had created down into the ditch, the American you killed still lying face down. His skin is blackened and charred, the veins a deep purple. It seemed your revolver was more than what it looked like, and you’re glad you had it in that situation. You’d killed enough things with your shovel to know it would have been a vicious death. The image of the Harpy girl against the truck you killed comes to the surface of your mind, the tears on her face as she held her dead friend. You wonder if you’ll be left in the same boat.

The mud is a uniform mottled brown, nothing out of the ordinary in it. You dig your hands through it, searching for Nixie as best you can. The panic rises in your stomach as no results are found.

You lift up the dead soldier, his body crumbling into ash at your touch. You struggle not to breathe it in, his remains taking to the air like leaves. You’re left holding only his uniform, a tattered and stained drab green that you toss aside. Underneath, you find nothing but splatters of blood and imprints that the soldier left.

You toss the clothing aside, working your way back up the hill. Each time you slip in the mud you worry more and more about Nixie and where she may be. The truck is in front of you, the canvas flaps moving slightly in the wind as you approach. Even from the distance you are away now you can smell the blood and gunpowder from within.

You lift the covering, the dim light filtering in through bullet holes that perforate the vehicle. Nixie had dragged you out of the hell hidden in here, and sounded weak as she did. Perhaps she’d fallen inside?

You pull yourself into the truck, your boots sticking into the drying blood. You kick aside empty casings, scanning the ground. Face down in the pool of red you see the wings of the fae you’ve come to hold dear to you. She doesn’t shine with the light she normally does, nor does she move. You scramble across the truck, lifting her into your hands. Her eyes are open, her head lols on her shoulders. You struggle to calm yourself, unsure of what to do.

I finished Storm of Steel today, would absolutely recommend to anyone here. Really conveys how horrible front line trench fighting was, but also the thrill of combat. Worth noting the author, Ernst Junger, was on the front right from the start of the war till the end, while Remarque only stuck around 2 months.
>>
>>2256600
If you want some good WW1 content, listen to the podcast Blueprint for Armageddon by Dan Carlin. Very very good, in fact I believe he quotes Ernst a few times.

Checking the fae for injuries. Updating.
>>
You lift her to your ear, listening to the light breathing that tickles against your lobe. It’s a good sign, but it doesn’t make you feel much better over the situation. You look at her again, carefully running a thumb over her to check for any injuries. As it reaches her collarbone, you feel a sharp point press against your skin.

You pull the Fae away, looking down at her small form and the discoloration around her neck. You’re not sure what to diagnose or even do. By the way she’s unconscious it could be more serious than a broken bone, but you don’t even know where to start.

You:

And on that note guys, we're going to stop for the night. Next session will be this Friday night at 10:30PM EST. As always I'm around for questions and discussion. Thanks for showing up tonight guys!
>>
>>2256618
Ah fuck, broken collar bone. Fuck moving her around is bad. Let's try to just keep her stable and ask Dok about issues relating to those bones and go off that information.

We can't actually risk anybody seeing finding out we have an 'enemy' of mankind until we know how the unit see's it and even moreso considering the fact of what happened the last time we heard humans and them interacted.
>>
>>2256618
Her breathing isn't raspy so her lungs seem fine.
Since we can feel a sharp point it's safe to assume the collarbone break has dislocated enough to require realignment but hasn't shattered the bone to multiple pieces. I'd recommend seeing Dok for surgery to realign the bones to allow proper healing but if it's not voted for a cast to immobilize the arm will have to do. Hard to say if the bruising will be fatal or not but she doesn't seem to be in critical danger.
>>

>>
>>2256660
Nothing done earlier, though she may think she heard some things in her daze about you liking her.

Germany is a religion based on more pagan ideals, particularly care for the land and creatures and the divinity the exemplify. The soul was proven by the appearance of the supernatural, almost like a big bang. The despair and destruction reached such a critical mass and then boom, weird and wacky stuff abounds.

You try to swallow, your throat hitching as you realize what you need to do. You’d not yet been trained in even basic medicine. As far as you knew a broken bone wouldn’t cause someone to be unconscious. You slipped Nixie into your breast pocket, resolving only to show the person you needed to. The familiar weight in your uniform was a comfort, despite her current situation. As you dropped from the truck you resolved to take better care of her.

Your first meeting was far different than the relationship you had now, a small Fae challenging you to stomp her feeble form into the mud. The inferno behind illuminating the hate in her eyes as she bared her teeth at you. You still don’t know why you picked her up, right next to an officer at that. Nor why you took the fall for her when she got you in hot water the next morning. Had you not saved her however, the ways in which you could have died horribly were innumerable. You owed her at least this much, even if you were sticking your neck out again.

You pass the first truck, and find yourself nearing the second. Dok stands with his back against the twisted black mass that used to be the engine and cab. You realized that you hadn’t yet seen the damage that had killed most of your squad a few days before hand. Scattered around the vehicle were chunks of fire warped metal, blackened with soot and explosive residue. You dreaded to see what was in the transport bay, the image of shredded and broken corpses surfacing in your mind.

Dok looked at you on approach, his face as neutral as ever.

“Did you find what you sought Jäger?”

You nod, closing the gap that separated the two of you. He cocks an eyebrow as you stand there, building the nerve to show him a Fae.

“Something on your mind? You look worried Jäger. See something unsettling?”

“No Dok, I just need your help.” You swallow your fears, gently pulling Nixie from your hand and showing her to Dok, careful to only let him see.

“She’s hurt, and I need your help. I don’t know what to do to help her.”

Dok stares at your open pal, and then at you. You can’t tell what emotion swims through his eyes, and you shuffle your feet, waiting for the worst.

“Where did you find this?”

You:

[1] Tell him the truth

[1] Tell him the truth
don't neglect to mention how she saved our lives on more than one occasion. And that kofpne spider whatever they were called
>>
“I saved her, and she saved me. Her forest was burnt down during basic, I found her in the mud. For whatever reason I didn’t kill her and I’m glad that happened. I’d have died in the tunnels like Lutz without her, or ended up eaten alive by the Kopf Spinne. I owe her.”

Dok continues his stare as he listens, glancing down at the diminutive Fae. The words tumble out of your mouth, and you simply can’t help it. You feel like you’re talking your way out of a firing line. You finish your explanation and look at the man who could very well shoot you and be in the right.

“I’d say those are fair enough reasons. We need every man we can get out here Jäger, not to mention you’ve been exemplary in every aspect. Besides that, I owe you for Johannes. He was a close friend…I wish I could have done more or at least shared those last cigarettes.”

Dok cups his hand under yours, softly taking Nixie from your grasp as one would a live grenade. He shifts her around, looking at her closely before reaching down into his pocket and pulling out a semi-clean strip of cloth that he sets her on.

“Her collarbone is broken, and judging by her state of unconsciousness couples with her eyes she has a rather serious concussion. She should be okay, but I can’t make many promises. I’m not sure how much of my medical knowledge translates to a Fairies. Light me a smoke would you?”

Dok motions to his breast pocket, and you reach in and grab at the pack. You light it carefully, your hands shaking from the adrenaline. Nixie lies on the cloth on Dok’s lap, her chest raising almost imperceptibly with each breath.

“You can stop worrying Jäger, you shake that hard and you’ll drop my smoke.” Dok takes the cigarette from your hand, the smoke haloing over his face.

“Go get Hauptmann will you? He’ll love this.”

“Why do you need the Captain?”

Dok doesn’t look up at you, gently prodding at the Fairy’s broken bone in an effort to ascertain how bad it is.

“If I was going to kill the Fae I would have already. Trust me Jäger.”

You look at Dok, your concern overwhelming you. Did you trust him and even more the captain? You felt as though you had become part of the unit quickly, but Nixie was something you still couldn’t tell people about. Only now that she was in serious harm was it necessary, despite how she had helped.

You nod, trying to push your worry aside as you leave Dok to tend to Nixie. It’s difficult to leave her in the open and in the care of another as you turn to find Hauptmann. If you’d shown Dok Nixie and he hadn’t killed her you doubted he’d let someone else do it. For whatever reason he wanted to speak to Hauptmann, and as such you’d trust in it.

The captain is standing among the survivors of the battle, the unit being three less men than it previously. That brought the total number to twelve, thirteen if counted Nixie as part.

“Ah, there you are Jäger. Done helping Dok?”

You shake your head, trying to keep the attention off of you as the unit looks your way.

“No sir, actually he’s requested your presence.”

Hauptmann cocks an eyebrow the scars on his face making a mocking smile as he does so.

“Is that the case? Well then, shall we take a walk that way?” You nod at the end of his statement, watching him turn back to the others.

“The rest of you check your gear and keep an eye out for anything we missed.”

The men give a yell of affirmation and begin to talk amongst themselves as they share ammunition and stories. Hauptmann walks up beside you, and motions for you to follow.

“So Jäger, what happened in that truck? It took you some time to open fire and now I see Penrod ending up dead. Can you offer me an explanation?”

"I doubt you would believe me Captain so bare with me for a moment. I noticed a dark void trying to draw me into the truck earlier when we were ambushed in the trucks, but kept away from it until after I was ordered to take position in there to engage the Americans earlier. When I entered the truck I found myself in a dark and strange stone void that clearly was not the insides of that truck and in it there was a old boney screaming banshee of sorts wailing a song to draw me closer. My "friend" pulled me away and saved me from what horrid fate may have occurred to me had I not been pulled away. When I exited the void, I found myself back in the truck next to Penrod dead, with several Americans advancing on us. I am not sure exactly how Penrod died, but it seems to have been from the Americans most likely, I am sorry I could not have prevented his death."

“I attract a bad kind of attention Hauptmann. My friend has noted this.”

Hauptmann looks at you, his face stern for what might be one of the few times you’ve seen him serious.

“Were you anyone else Jäger I’d have you put on the firing line for the manner in which you try to play off another comrades death. However...you’ve proven yourself quite a few times in the short span I’ve known you. Along with that, you have this feeling about you like a cloud.” Hauptmann pauses, looking away from you and forward as he walks toward Dok.

“I don’t like it. It feels like death around you Dietrich. Whatever attention it is you have taken the ire of, I wish you luck. Things in this world are far darker than it once was.”

Hauptmann’s normal half cocked smile slips into place over his features as stands over Dok. Leisurely he puts his arm out and leans against the truck.

“That doesn’t look like a soldier you’re working on Herr Doktor. In fact it looks like something we’ve been ordered to kill on sight.”

Dok snorts, and you look over his shoulder at the progress he has made since you walked away. Nixie is has a tight bandage wrapped over her upper torso, the protrusion the broken bone made now gone. Around Dok are the cold butts of smoked cigarettes, their ashes scattered around.

“It is in fact Edward, exactly as you describe it. However from what Jäger says, this little Fae is nearly part of our unit with how many times she’s pulled him from the fire.” Dok continues to recount what you told him, embellishing it in fact more than you did.

Hauptmann runs a hand over his chin, looking between the two of you and the small Fae on the cloth.

“Interesting. I guess our unit still needed some sort of mascot.” Dok and Hauptmann chuckle over the joke, a genuine laugh that slowly peters out.

“Will she be alright then?”

Dok nods, pulling another drag into his lungs and exhaling.

“As far I can tell, she’ll be sore but fine.”

Hauptmann nods, then looks to you. The silence between the two of you could be cut with a knife, and is only broken by the sound of Dok’s cigarette burning and the low voices between the unit down the road.

“You’re full of surprises Dietrich, though I can’t really complain. Maybe the attention that finds you isn’t all bad. Years and years ago the Fae used to be signs of good tidings, maybe that can still hold true. Your call whether to keep her secret however. Things are different out here than they are back in training, the men need things to believe in.”

“If it’s all good sir, I’d like to wait for her to decide on that.”

“Yeah. Yeah that’s Nixie there.”

For a moment it’s near completely silent between the three of you, until both Dok and Hauptmann burst out laughing.

“Fuck Dok I thought that girl back at the House in Antwerp was strange. Goddamn I think Jäger has us beat. A damn fairy!”

Dok tries to stifle his laughter, lest he ruin the final touches to the bandage work.

You think you see Nixie’s eyes crack open as the ghost of a smile passes over her face. You can’t be sure though as it vanishes near as soon as you catch it.

“Well, regardless I guess we wait until the young miss is awake. Rest assured though Jäger, the men out here aren’t going to be hostile to her. It’s about time we try to be a bit kinder to the Fae I think. Maybe they can even help us end this damned war and we can go back to some semblance of civility.”

Dok nods in agreement, passing a cigarette off to Hauptmann as he does, and you realize that the two of them look rather tired. You can’t actually imagine having been on the battlefield much more than you have been, the constant danger and fighting already taking a toll on you. Now you realized, the threat of danger didn’t just hang over you but Nixie as well.

“Tell me Jäger, do you know what it is that haunts you? Why is the specter of death following you?” The two men look up at you, expectantly. They’ve held your secret so far, and even been willing to help.

Do you tell them about The Choir?

For a moment, you struggle not to let it all tumble out. About the Banshee’s, the so called Choir and their involvement in your life as of the last few days. Words of warning from earlier however, to hold your silence about The Choir hold you back.

“No Sir, I’m sure it’s just a rather angry Revenant.”

Hauptmann stares at you for a moment, as if deciding whether or not to believe you. His eyes carry a dangerous glint for just a moment, distrust and worry mixing with an anger only a seasoned officer would exhibit.

“Alright Jäger, I’ll trust you on this. If you are keeping it from me I’m sure you have reasons. Regardless, we need to head back to the front line and rearm. The men could use some rest as well. Gather whatever gear your have, and inform the others.”

You nod, moving to grab Nixie but Dok stops you.

You accept the reasoning, and rather than fight it you believe it’ll do her more good to be with the one who is medically trained. Turning on your heel, the mud squelching under you, you begin walking back to the gathered group. Siegfried stands in the middle, waving the stump of his arm about in a grand gesture as he motions about with his shotgun in the other hand. The men look enraptured by whatever tale he is spinning, and you can’t help but find it funny that he stands so tall over adults who’ve been part of the war for some time.

Siegfried turns to you as you arrive, a grin across his lips.

“Jäger! Just in time for the climax of our story, featuring you of course.” Siegfried grabs you by the shoulder, pulling you into the center of the circle as he builds up the finale.

“Surrounded on all sides by those damned worms, we’re both out of ammunition and I’m still bleeding bad. Then this guy here, pulls out a damn shovel and fights like a demon possessed. He leapt of the bunker, telling me to run for it, whirling like a dervish through them. Every cleave was a killing blow, and had you guys arrived any later I’m sure he’d have killed all the things given enough time.”

The men cheer, laughing and clapping Siegfried on the back. You hear mixed shouts of “Der Mauer” and “Der Schaufelmeister”. You can’t help but grin, the joyous spirits infectious.

“Is it true Dietrich? Killed that many of them while wounded and carrying your nearly dead friend?”

“Nah, I just tried to stay alive. Siegfried here however, was a monster. Fighting while bleeding to death, a bayonet in one hand. He even ripped one in half at a point.” The men look to Siegfried in awe, very easily believing his ability to do such a thing.

Siegfried seems slightly disappointed that you didn’t completely ham it up, but relishes the chance to flex to the crowd.

“Damn straight, wasn’t any harder than breaking kindling.” Siegfried poses as the chance arises, laughing all the while.

As much as you enjoy the light hearted feeling, you are still in a hostile zone. As such, you clear your throat, trying to quiet down the group.

“Hauptmann says we’re moving to the frontline, to rest and resupply.” The soldiers cheer, yelling about whore tents and real food. Hauptmann steps up from behind, the cheers growing louder.

“Alright settle down, I know we’ve been out here awhile so I think you all need some R&R before we kick some more Americans back home. Gather you stuff, and we’re moving in five.” The men disperse, still chatting happily as they go to get whatever they aren’t carrying.

You nod, moving to the truck to double check if you had left anything. You pick up your rifle from the ground, the beaten and rusted weapon still functional which made it better than nothing. Your shovel is still on your side, and the revolver in the back of your trousers. Tightening down your rig, you hold your rifle at a low ready and move to where the rest of the unit gathers.

Dok approaches, his medical bag on his side and Nixie nowhere in sight. You’re sure she’s well cared for, as Dok knows what he is doing. You’re surprised that Dok and Hauptmann had accepted the Fae so readily, still waiting for the proverbial blade to fall. Siegfried stands next to you, his shotgun in the crook of his good arm.

“Not trying to get too full of myself here Siegfried, I fight just like everything else out here. If we were at a breeding house however..” You grin at him, and receive one back in kind.

“I had you pegged for lusting after someone Dietrich, not really the charnel house kind of guy.” You shrug, keeping up the smile.

“You go to one on graduation?”

You shake your head no, staying quiet. Your encounter with Ivara was special to you, and you wanted to keep it to yourself.

“Ahhh I had a hell of a time at one. Could lift the gals up like nothing. I can’t very much do that anymore…” Siegfried looks down at his arm, and for a moment you see a flicker of sadness cross the friendly giants face.

“I’m sure I’ll find some other way to do it. Besides, don’t they say women like scars? This is more badass than that!”

The two of you laugh as the rest of the unit lines up, what little gear they have left slung over their shoulders or attached to their rig. You cast a glance across them, empty grenade bags and little ammunition remaining in terms of munitions. It’s a good thing you were moving to the front, as another fight any bigger than a small skirmish would end with a charge as the Americans did.

Hauptmann finally arrives, his greatcoat giving him an intimidating and fashionable aura.

“Alright Sturmtruppen, best we be moving. Eyes to the sky and boots to the ground let’s make good time. We’ll be heading through the wastes, so keep your eyes open for any unsavory critters. Unit, march!” With his declaration finished, Hauptmann turns on his heel and sets off at a quick pace. The men fall in line behind and follow, a lively marching song spreading through the ranks.

You soon leave the destroyed trucks and dead behind, the alien landscape of shell holes and fetid water stretching as far as you can see. In the distance the pounding of great siege cannons thrums a bassy note, every now and again a stray round landing within visible view of the line. You watch the grey skies, ready for any harpies to dive in on your unit. Occasionally you catch glimpses of other friendly units marching in various directions.

In the distance, you see such a line. Their uniforms are tattered, blowing by strips in the wind. The men seem unperturbed by this, stepping at a pace that seems far too taxing for a long distance. The closer your two lines come, the more and more off you begin to feel about them.

You move further up the line, passing by the few others in your unit who walked in front. By the time you reach Hauptmann you can tell he feels uncomfortable as well. His hands are closed tight over his rifle, his face neutral as he looks over the approaching unit.

“Dietrich, I see you’re also feeling it. See the way their uniforms hang? Those are Wolfstruppen. Be on guard, they’re known to have difficulties controlling themselves.”

You nod, yanking back on your rifles action and chambering a round. You slow down, letting yourself fall back into your position in the line. Having noticed you, the other line turns and heads in the direction of your unit. As they grow closer you begin to make out fine details. What uniform remains on their form is blood stained and patchy, the rest hanging in tatters or simply missing. Dark circles ring their eyes, their hair long and face unshaven.

At the front of the line, a clean cut man in a normal officer’s uniform waves in the direction of Hauptmann, a casual smile on his face. Hauptmann signals the line to stop, turning to the group.

“I need two to come with me, any volunteers? A heads up, these are Wolfstruppen we’re dealing with so if anyone is afraid of dogs I’d stay back.” The men chuckle nervously in response, shifting from foot to foot.

You step forward, volunteering yourself to stand guard. Hauptmann nods at you, and then Siegfried as your friend quickly follows suit.

“Jäger, Siegfried. Thanks for volunteering. Hopefully this will be nothing more than a quick chat.”

Hauptmann motions for you to follow, and the two of you fall in on either side of him. Siegfried yanks on the handle of his shotgun, the cylinder rotating and slotting a shell in the chamber. You hold your weapon tight, staring forward at the approaching man.

“Edward, been a while.” The man motions to Hauptmann, whose name you have only recently learned.

“Hanz, likewise. How’s your patrol been?” Hauptmann’s voice remains neutral, though you can make out a cold underlying note.

“We had a run in with an American Harpy unit, who I think mistook the boys for just a regular soldier. They were ah...mistaken.” The men behind the officer grin, a unsettling smile that sets your hairs raising on end. You imagine the harpies didn’t fair well, before or after the battle.

“We did have to leave a man behind though. He had become a bit too unruly. As such, if any of your men want a new line of work I think we can make some space.” The officer looks at you, his grin that of fake friendship. You can’t imagine what agreeing to such a proposition would entail.

“Can you tell me more?”

Hauptmann looks to you so fast you’re worried his neck might break, but Hanz keeps the nice smile on his face.

“What’s your name soldier? Interested in Wolfstruppen?”

“Jäger, and I just want information.”

Hanz looks you up and down, his smile remaining the same.

“Well Wolfstruppen are the next step above Sturmtruppen. We are the elite shock troopers, breaking lines by ripping and tearing them apart. You can expect to spend most of combat in melee range, and performing most of your missions as night ops. Your pay grade is higher, as you’ll be expected to do more with less. On the subject of the actual Wolf part, it is irreversible. Due to some past issues, you will be forbid from breeding houses. However, anything else is...fair game.”

The fact that he talks so nonchalantly about giving up your humanity sets you on edge, as does his ever present smile.

“Well, interested?”

You shake your head. Losing your humanity is not at all appealing and the manner in which he talked about one of the soldiers from earlier being left behind doesn’t sit right with you. You step backwards behind and to the side of Hauptmann, staring forward. The officer frowns slightly, then smiles again.

“Well that’s fair Jäger, it was Jäger right? You’ve sated your curiosity which is fine. There’s always a spot in the Wolfstruppen for anyone should you change your mind.” The officer looks away from you, and back at Hauptmann.

“Well Edward, I can see by your direction you’re headed to the lines. Do be careful, we’ve heard reports of the Ghuls getting bold again. Must be having difficulties with food once more.”

With that, the officer known as Hanz moves back to his line. You feel a weight off your shoulders as he leaves, the tense feeling you didn’t know you had fading.

“Though I appreciate the pursuit of knowledge Jäger, Wolfstruppen aren’t to be taken lightly. They’ll take anyone they can, willingly or not. When you become a Werewolf, your only chance is death or those units.” Hauptmann sounds concerned more than angry, as if trying to protect you.

The line resumes its march, heading towards the looming shape of the mass of trenches and tents.

After some time of mud underfoot and the constant drumming of artillery in the distance the unit comes upon the first line of trenches. The men are dirt covered, their eyes empty. They were likely just rotated from the front, spending a few weeks in the back line before being moved up further and further. The lines of trenches and tents stretch as far as you can see, and far over the horizon you can hear the sounds of constant machine gun fire.

Hauptmann stops the line, motioning for you to gather round.

“Alright men, Dok and I will be heading to the command bunker for a full report and further orders. Meet us there by nightfall, Line Forty Eight Section Six. Until then, you’re all dismissed to eat, fuck, and, be merry. Good work out there boys.”

His piece spoken, Hauptmann motions to Dok to follow. You look on at him, worried about Nixie though Dok reassures you by patting his medical bag as he walks away.

“Dietrich! Dok recommended I head to one of the medical sections to get this arm touched up. Would you head there with me?” Siegfried approaches you, his weapon slung and an ever present smile on his face.

You tell Siegfried you’ll go with him, the both of you dropping down into the trench proper instead of walking above it. The wooden board down the center is covered in mud and water, the cold slop dripping in over your boots and numbing your feet. The water ripples around your steps, small concentric circles waving out from the two of you and the small bonefish that swim around the edges.

“Thank you Jäger, I know it’s likely to be boring but I’d like someone with me, especially you and even more so since you were there.” Siegfried walks in front of you, passing by various branching paths and other soldiers.

The sounds of constant chatter and exclamations fill your ears, civilization nearly drowning out the sounds of gunfire in the distance. It was difficult to imagine what the actual front was like, even now you were still miles away. The front had moved countless times over the years, thousands of men dying for each bitterly contested inch. The Somme had become a natural barrier between either nation, what was once a river now a choked trickle of churned earth and blood.

The sign attached to the left wall shows the medical station just ahead, though you might have been able to figure it out by the buzzing clouds of corpse flies and dried blood stains that spattered the walls. The two of you enter, the front desk more of a butchering table. A muscled man stands over it, his leather apron stained a fresh red as he slices apart a fresh cadaver.

“Gentleman, here to see the Doktor? Or here for some fresh cuts. We’ve got a damn choice one right here.”

Siegfried looks to you.

“You can either come with me to the examination or stay here, I’m sure we could use some good meat after I finish.”

“I’ll go with you Siegfried, we can always stop here on our way out.”

The butcher nods to you, shrugging his shoulders.

“Come back anytime stranger.”

You and Siegfried move further into the bunker, passing by covered bodies mixed in amongst the soldiers that lie on the ground moaning in pain. Their wounds fester with maggots, the corpse flies quite literally eating them alive. Judging by the state of things, the French attack did enough damage that what medical staff there are have become overwhelmed with the influx of injuries.

The surgical theater smells rotten, the man in the center covered from head to toe in what was once a white coat, stained a deep brown of dried blood. The surgical mask and goggles give him an inhuman look.

“Ahh, Sturmtruppen. To what do I owe the honor of your presence?”

Siegfried gestures towards the man with his stump, the bloodied bayonet still attatched.

“Mmmm...I see. Good stitchwork on it, whoever your medical officer is did wonderful. Not much else for me to do. If you’re interested in a prosthetic however, I’d head down to the market tents. I hear there is an engineer out there that can do some fine work.”

The Doktor looks to you, and you feel uncomfortable under the gaze of the goggles.

“And why are you here? Do I need to look at something?”

“I actually need something looked at Herr Doktor. I have an injury on my right calf.”

The Doktor nods at you, walking around you slowly.

“Just a bullet wound? Melee? A trip perhaps?”

You shake your head, describing the situation of the tunnels that led up to the wound.

“A Rotted Mother? Impressive, and a good thing you got it checked. Their forelimbs inject eggs into whatever they pierce. You best hope that it wasn’t a forelimb. Up on the table now cave rat.”

You comply, moving onto the bloodstained slab that sits in the middle of the amphitheater. The dried blood is sticky and pungent, invading your airways and lodging itself deep in your sinuses. The Doktor rolls back your uniform, and you can feel the line of clothing that was stuck in the wound pull itself free.

“I see you’ve been running on it. I understand that patrol calls for constant action but the least you could have done was check the stitches every now and again. Judging by the puncture however it wasn’t a forelimb. Though by the smell it’s been infected with something.”

The Doktor doesn’t warn you before the alcohol hits the wound, the sharp smell hitting your nostrils as he empties it over your calf. You hiss through your teeth, Siegfried chuckling at you.

“If you think that hurts you should try what I did. Maybe take your right one off, we can be like twins.”

You struggle to grin through the pain, the needle biting through your flesh as the man sows the wound shut again.

“That should do it. Try not to open it up again, and if you’re going to go into a nest remember what I said about forelimbs. If you’d please I have some more men to tend to, off you go.”

Siegfried helps you from the table, the two of you walking out and over the wounded the way you came in.

“Where to now Jäger?”

You turn to the Butcher on your way out, the cadaver having been sliced into neat cuts.

“Welcome? Whaddaya buyin?”
You have eighteen marks, the prices of the man's wares are listed on a battered sign on the front of the table.

“I’ll take the belly cut please. Enough for the two of us.”

“Hehehehe, good choice Stranger.”

The man leans over the cadaver, taking his knife to the portion that resembled the stomach. It slices quickly, and as you watch you realize how hungry you are. The wind shifts direction outside, the smell of grilled meat and vegetables making your mouth water. The butcher wraps the meat in a brown paper, flies already landing on the outside of it.

“Two portions, take it three to the left. Come again anytime stranger.”

Siegfried takes the package from you, dropping the money on the table. You try to protest but the larger man shuts you down.

“For coming along, I need to repay you in some manner. Now let’s go eat.”

You follow your friend outside, stepping into the muck with the other soldiers. The sounds of merriment and chatter draw closer as you approach the canteen, your hunger growing with each step towards it. A faded sign reading No Man’s Land hangs over it, a few bullet holes having punctured it.

The door swings open on used hinges, a warm glow bathing the two of you as you step inside. The canteen is far larger than you thought, stretching back to what must border the amphitheater. It’s quite full, the tables mostly occupied though you see a few openings on the far side.

You motion Siegfried towards the bar, and the two of you walk over to it. The stools are worn but comfortable, and as you sit down you realize you haven't sat down in some time. The rest feels good, and in the recesses of your mind you worry if you’ll be able to stand and get back to work. The bartender walks to you, a weary look on her face.

“What can I get you gentleman. For the record this is not a breeding house so don’t ask me for any favors, that’s across the street. Otherwise we have drink and food. If you brought your own we’ll cook that too.”

Siegfried sets the meat on the table, the woman grabbing the package. She hesitates before walking away.

“This isn’t anything weird is it? Last time someone brought their own meat it was from one of the Risen, damn meat melted into the grill and stunk up the place for weeks.”

“No Ma’am it’s from the butcher at the clinic, just some belly cut.”

The woman shrugs, moving to the grill and tossing the meat on it. The fat sizzles and pops, the smell of cooked meat wafting to you.

Behind you and Siegfried, the loud shouts of soldiers gambling fills the air. You look back, someone having clearly won. Two of the seats are open, the men who lost scooping what they had and leaving.

“Nah Siegfried, let’s save whatever money we have. Besides that we’re on a time limit, don’t want to start losing and need to make it back.”

“Fair points Jäger.” You can tell Siegfried wanted to gamble by the tone in his voice, but he understands your reasoning.

By the smell of the meat it’s nearly done, and you aren’t surprised when the bartender pulls it off the grill and sets it in front of you.

“Eat up, you Sturmtruppen never really have a chance to stop.”

The two of you dig in, thankful to have fresh food as opposed to rations. Around you the merriment continues, soldiers coming and going as they eat, drink and, gamble. You pay no mind, focused on the delicious food. The meat falls apart in your mouth, a warm greasy salt that warms you through.

Siegfried seems to struggle keeping the bayonet pointed in a safe and manageable direction, settling to hold his arm stiffly at his side.

“Fucking harpies, they weren’t joking when they said not to get in melee. I barely even felt the arm come of man. It just...fell off. I’d hate to face more than a few at a time.”

You nod in agreement, your mouth too full to respond. Siegfried falls quiet again before speaking thoughtfully.

“You think you can do a harpy Jäger?”

You struggle not to spit out your food, a mixture of laughing and choking. In an effort not to let him catch you like that again you finish what’s left fast. Siegfried grins at you the whole time.

The two of you stand from the bar, walking towards the door. Behind you, the sounds of the gambling table grow more heated and you’re thankful that you didn’t join in. Stepping out once more into the trench, you struggle to stay on your feet as a wave of rats move by. They crawl around you and over your boots, fleeing from something further down. Judging by the shouts and animalistic screams it was likely that trench ghouls had burrowed out of a wall somewhere. The man with the Wolfstruppen did say they were becoming more and more bold on the rear lines.

Thankfully, the sign heads you in the opposite direction. You travel with the wave of rats, the trenches slowly inclining further downward as they open up. Before too long, you find yourself in a wide space of what used to be an artillery position.

Tents sit in neat rows, the vendors standing in the opening or in makeshift stalls in front. Exotic weapons, armor, and supplies stretch as far as you can see.

Siegfried struggling with his arm earlier makes you wish to help him. You feel that Siegfried is your closest ally and friend you have, and though you’ve saved one another many a time you still feel indebted for the first time he pulled you off the ground and saved you from the Harpy that would have invariably ended your life.

You walk past the various weapons and supplies, some interesting items catching your eyes. You resolve that if you still have money on the way back you will stop and see what some of the more exotic weapons are. A rather ornate tent at the end of the line seems to be your destination, an elderly man sitting on a rug. He perks up at the sight of Siegfried, particularly when he notices the missing arm.

“You there, a fine soldier such as yourself could use a quality replacement to the arm you lost. I think I have just the piece!”

The man grabs Siegfried by the good arm, forcefully pulling him in front of the tent before he vanishes inside. You can hear the sounds of rummaging and metal banging on metal, which ceases after a loud crash. The elderly man appears once more from inside, holding something wrapped in an oil stained cloth.

“I’ve got...just the right...prosthetic! Only two hundred marks!” The man wheezes every few words, his long beard moving up and down with each inahaltion.

You’re crestfallen at the price, as Siegfried and yourself have less than fifty marks between you. If Siegfried is disappointed he doesn’t show it.

“I’m afraid we’ll have to pass old man, we don’t get paid that much.”

The man strokes his beard, a twinkle in his eye that looks all too knowing.

“I have an offer then, if you’ll come into the tent.” Without a chance to respond the man vanishes inside, a wrinkled hand beckoning the two of you to follow.

Siegfried looks at you, tapping the bayonet on his arm. You nod, setting your hand onto your shovel.

Together, the two of you move into the tent. You each lift a flap, the dim candlelight barely illuminating the metal parts and gears strewn about the makeshift home. The old man sits in the center, pointing to the rug in front of him.

“Come on sit, sit, sit. I’ve got a proposition for you so you can have the arm, free of charge.” The two of you comply, crossing your legs, though you try not to laugh as Siegfried struggles not to knock anything over.

“I am quite sorry about the price, but I can’t do anything. Since the French moved up on the front the officers have been too busy to keep any of the men in line. A local group has started a protection racket on the market, and they’re bleeding me dry. I’m sure you can infer where I’m going with this.” The old man pauses, looking over your shoulder and outside the slit of the tent.

“Either pay them off, beat them senseless, whatever you need to do. Keep them away from my business and I’ll give you the prosthetic and any changes you want to it free of charge.”

Siegfried looks to you, expectantly.

“I’m game if your game, I won’t be able to afford it for quite some time without doing this.”

You look to Siegfried, the soldier who has come to be your friend in the last few days. You’ve saved each other countless times, fought and bled side by side. In a way, his arm was your fault as he lost it saving you. The least you could do would be to help him. Besides that, the request set you on edge. Despite Siegfried’s size, a group of soldier’s willing to collect on anyone in a time such as this would likely not at all be opposed to violence as a means to an end. It’d set you at ease to help him, and watch over your comrade.

“I’ll go with you Siegfried, can’t leave you to have all the fun alone.”

Siegfried grins before looking at the merchant and outstretching his hand.

“We can take care of the problem, I just want the arm afterwards.”

The merchant nods repeatedly, clearly surprised you agreed to the request.

“You’d be doing the whole market a favor, I’ll spread the word to them all!”

The merchant rises to leave, only to be stopped by Siegfried who grabs him by the coat.

“It’s rather important however you tell us what we’re looking for and where.”

The merchant looks back at the two of you, before half smiling and walking back in.

“I can’t believe I nearly forgot. They tend to hang around No Man’s Land bar. If not there, further down the Section Six line, past our little market here. The group is eight men, though I think they answer to someone else. Any questions?”

I guess since we know the location of the bar we'll ask what unit they belong to. Updating.
>>
You look to Siegfried and then to the merchant.

“Do we know what unit they belong to?”

The merchant shakes his head.

“I don’t have an exact unit number, but I believe they’re just standard infantry. They’ve been away from the front for some time. At least a month, and with the incessant fighting from the French they’ve managed to slip through being redeployed.”

You nod, thankful for the knowledge. With that, the merchant opens the tent flap and heads out, gesturing for the two of you to follow. You and Siegfried rise, walking back out into the grey day.

“Well friend, do we head to the bar or go past the market?”

“Best head to the bar, see if they’re around their usual hang out.” Siegfried nods in agreement, taking the lead and beginning the walk back down the trenchline.

You reach back, grasping the revolver in your hand in pulling it out and up in front of your face. You release the cylinder, letting it swing up and over to rest on top of the weapon. Three of the rounds are fired, the primer oddly missing in its entirety. The other three are stamped with a mark that is unfamiliar to you. A geometric shape that seems to turn on itself forever. Around the rim of the casing, the stenciled lettering in english. The numbers you understand, .454, however you aren’t quite sure what Casull means.

Regardless, the ammunition is odd in general. You pull one of the unspent cartridges free, looking it over as you walked behind Siegfried. The silver tip shines in nearly any light, even glowing briefly as shadows cast over it. As you run your finger over it, you realize it leaves a powdery residue on your skin. You can’t quite understand what you feel, but you know the round has some sort of property you can’t place. You remind yourself to try to ask Nixie when you next see her.

The sign above the bar is just ahead, the familiar sound of drunken revelry emanating from within. Siegfried stops outside the door, looking back at you.

“Done fooling with your toy? How do you want to approach this Dietrich, shall we just slip back in or walk in and make noise.”

You go in:

>>
You peek inside. A large crowd of soldiers has gathered around the gambling table, their cheers ringing about the room as the stakes are raised. You can’t tell the group just by looking, and going in with the intent to stir trouble would make it far harder than it needed to be.

“We’ll just go in normal, order a drink or such and watch for awhile.”

Siegfried nods in response, pushing open the door and making for the bar. You slip the revolver behind you and into your trousers where you had kept it. The weight of it settles comfortably, and you’ve become so used to carrying it that you barely notice it. The shovel bounces on your right side with each step, swinging along with your motions. Siegfried leads the way to the bar, taking a seat at the stools you were at earlier. The bartender turns, looking the two of you up and down.

“Couldn’t stay away I see, what can I get you two? A drink, some more food?”

Siegfried shakes his head.

“Just two drinks, something clean and weak.”

The bartender nods, vanishing behind the counter to the sound of clinking glasses. You look around the bar, glancing at the various soldiers sitting around. The group at the gambler’s table is the largest, easily twenty people gathered around the chairs. You can’t see much over the men stood around, but whatever it is must be exciting by the cheers. To the left of the table in the center, four men are gathered around five drinks, looking pensive in their silence. To the right, the tables are mostly empty, their patrons having risen to watch the festivities in the middle. All that remains is two men, talking in hushed tones in the farthest corner.

“Well Dietrich? Which group do we start with?”

You talk to the group to the:

You stand, motioning for Siegfried to leave sat as you move away. He nods, looking back to the drink in his hands as he cases the room. The cheers grow even louder, someone having won big and the crowd going wild. You tune it out, walking closer to the four men at the table. You remember the merchant stated that you were looking for eight men, so you don’t believe these are the people you are looking for. However, you can’t help but be intrigued by the fifth drink with no patron to take it.

One of the men glances up at your approach, elbowing his friend who quickly taps the table. The four of them look up at you expectantly though defensive.

“Can we help you man? Need something?”

You shake your head, unsure of exactly what you would say to find them out regardless. Instead you ask the only thing you can think of.

“Why the fifth drink?”

The men frown, looking back down to their table. The one who noticed you speaks first, a defeated note in his voice.

“Just pouring it out for a lost friend. We just got rotated back, most of our unit bit it in a charge. Including the poor sap who the drink was for. Anything else you need?”

You shake your head, turning to walk away. It strikes you however that the merchant had also told you the men were part of an infantry unit. You look back at the group.

“Infantry?”

The men shake their head.

“Cavalry.”

“My condolences.”

You look back at the room. You’re left with center and right to check.

You step forward, glancing at the gambling table in the center and then to Siegfried, whose eyes have followed you since you had left the bar. He nods once, standing to his massive height and walking towards the middle. You cross in front of him as he makes his way forward. Siegfried muscles his way through the crowd, trying to get to the table in the center. Incredibly, you lose sight of him. You realize he must have sat at an open seat and joined in.

You reach the far side of the room, the dim electric lights here having gone out. The shadows are long, and hide most of the shapes of tables. You see the two men in the far corner, their cigarettes mingling with the low light of the lantern on the table. The man farthest from you is elderly, a beard covering the lower half of his face. The foam of his beer sits on his upper lip, mixing in with the gray mustache.

The man who sits across from him is hard to discern, a hunched shape in a greatcoat leaning on the table. By his uniform he looks to be some sort of officer, though his uniform seems rather oversized and worn. You step into the light of the lantern, looking at the two of them.

They look up questioningly.

What do you say?

You nod your head at the two of them, trying to remain respectful.

“Are all these seats occupied? Would one of them happen to be free?”

The two men look around them, shaking their heads no in answer. You pull out the seat closest to you, setting yourself down at the head of the table. You motion the bartender, who thankfully sees you, bringing over three drinks. The men take them, surprised and thankful at your generosity.

“How are the two of you today?”

The elderly man responds first, a noticeable wheeze in his breath that is no doubt from chemical exposure.

“Just fine, just fine. Might be more than fine soon, finer than I’ve ever been.” A hint of mirth makes its way to the forefront of his speaking, the smile that stretches his lips broad and genuine. The other man however, looks at you suspiciously. Oddly enough, he won’t stop sniffing in your direction.

“This is Englan, I’m Frederick.” The elderly one, Frederick, gestures across him towards the man in the greatcoat.

“And yourself? Not often someone shows up here to sit down and buy stranger’s a few drinks.”

“Dietrich. Dietrich Jäger.” You keep your reply curt and friendly, still unnerved by the man to your right.

“May I ask what you’re doing in the dark section here? Forgive my saying it looks rather shady.”

Frederick laughs heartily before taking a steady drink. Englan makes to keep him quiet but is promptly dismissed as Frederick waves his hand at him.

“I’m signing up for a new life. Far too old to do what I’ve been doing any longer, it has become much to difficult on my body. My compatriot here is part of the Wulfstruppen, come to alleviate me of these damnable aches and pains. A new life really.”

You ready yourself to slip in the question you need asking, of the gang in the market however you’re stopped by Frederick. He raises his glass in a toast to Englan, who fakes the motion. As Frederick drinks, the Wulfstruppen leans in to you, his voice low.

“You smell of silver, and Fae dust. I don’t like it.”

How do you react?

“Damn, I’d have expected Rot Worm and blood to mask that smell. I am in fact carrying silver. Where you’re getting Fae dust however I’m not sure.”

Englan leans closer, pushing a finger against the breast pocket that Nixie usually sits in.

“Right here. Fae. By the...delicious smell...A female. I do so enjoy those, they’re quite delicious little treats.”

You fight back the rising anger, remaining calm.

“I’d guess your nose is wrong then. How odd. There’s no Fae in my pocket.”

The man snorts, staring at you with considerable venom. You turn back to Frederick who is clearly the more receptive one.

“A new life? Perhaps another drink then, to celebrate!”

You slide your drink towards him, Frederick readily accepting. He laughs happily, starting on what is clearly not his second or even third drink. You decide he seems receptive enough, and pose the question you’ve been meaning to ask.

“As an infantry man, you must know most of the others who got rotated back. Does a group of troublemakers sound familiar? Eight, maybe nine of them?”

Frederick looks at you through the glass mug, setting it on the table and belching loudly.

“Yes in fact it does. We had a few ah...reformed penal units mixed in to bolster our ranks. We’ve been taken a damn beating by the French artillery. So, they sent us some extras. Turns out most of them aren’t very reformed. Those that have managed to evade getting sent back up in the chaos have started sectioning off parts of the trench lines as their own turf.’

Frederick tips back the drink again, finishing it and wiping his mustache on the coat of his uniform.

“The ones that run this section spend most of their time here, gambling. I wouldn’t recommend joining, they tend to fix the games and if you manage to outsmart them they get rather unhappy.”

You look over to the table, which you realize has fallen much quieter than it was. Clearly the game has gotten serious, and you can pick out Siegfried sitting in the center. The cup of dice is in his hand, a vicious smile affixed to his face.

The man sitting with his back to you has one hand on the table, the other fiddling with something in his lap. The Wulfstruppen leans in to your ear, his breath inhumanely hot.

“I think they’re getting serious there Fae boy. You might need to help your friend. Take your silver and leave.”

What is your course of action?

And with that guys, we'll be calling it tonight. Due to the way my schedule is falling the next session will be Tuesday the 6th at 10:30PM EST.
