The ancient and venerable wizard's guild has always remained neutral in the worldly affairs until the day one from their ranks, an archmage named Symes took over the principality of Faleroth all by himself and subjugated all its denizens to do his bidding digging a mine in the nearby desert searching for the fabled crysx crystals.

This opened a precedent for magicians to join the worldly affairs, and a dangerous one at that. It wasn't long after that until Hiva the ice witch took over a town in the mountains to conduct her own research on white dragons, then Dolphelm the water wizard took over a coastal town to conduct his research on maritime wildlife, and so on and so forth. After a few years every town was under the direct control of a wizard or a group of wizards, the world divided between the mystically attuned and the underclass of non-casters. The world lived under the domain of the wizards for several decades.

Then the cataclysm came. The old magic began to fade. At first it were just some oddly frequent disjunctions disrupting the flow of magic in the world, but after awhile even common spells would start to fail. The common folk, tired of the oppression of the wizards, found their opportunity to finally get rid of these self appointed rulers. Large scale witch hunts were conducted. The few wizards that somehow still managed to retain their powers fled away from civilization.

You're a renegade wizard, in times past your mighty spells would have made you pretty much unassailable by the common rabble but right now magic in the world seems to be fading.

Your grimoire was long lost while you fled from witch hunters but you know by heart the following spells
-Magic missile
-Healing elixir
-Alter self
-Suggestion
-Fireball

Your own theory is that the connection with whichever plane our own plane was draining energy from was severed and now we need to find alternative sources of mana if we are to cast any spells at all. Which alternative source of mana do you use for your spells?

So my idea is that the MC is kind of like a psychic vampire with some reserves of mana which he has figured out how to magically steal from others either ritualistically or physically somehow, and if this reserve runs low he must either draw from his own life force possibly killing him or draw from others again

Before the cataclysm you happened to be researching a way to increase the amount of spells a wizard could cast daily by storing life force unto himself by magically stealing it from others ritualistically. Every living being, even non casters, has a mana pool, small as it may be, and through ritual their lifeforce can be converted into mana and drained into the wizard so that he can use it to cast spells. At first you limited your research to farm animals but when the cataclysm struck and you were faced with dire circumstances you were forced to try your new mana gathering methods into humans and it worked to great effect.

You now have a pool of mana that can be replenished by ritually draining life force of other creatures. If it gets too low it starts to drain your own life force so you must be careful when managing it.

-Magic missile takes 1LP to cast
-Healing elixir takes 1LP to cast
-Alter self takes 2LP to cast
-Suggestion takes 2LP to cast
-Fireball takes 3LP to cast

You currently have 15 Lifeforce Points and if it drops lower than 10 it starts draining your own life force.

LP (10)/15

Name wizard.

You're hiding in a small cave at a forest near a small village. There's a stream that goes through the woods then close to the village. You caught sight of some poachers earlier but you believe they didn't see you. You take a deep gulp of water from your canteen and eat the last of your smoked meat. Looks like you'll need to hunt again. Small animals like rabbits have too little life force to be useful for charging your mana, but larger animals like deers have some. A shame that they don't have nearly enough to make it worthwhile in terms of how much magic you'd have to spend in order to kill them. Perhaps you could acquire a bow and arrow at the local village. Or perhaps you could find some more juicy target to drain. Although you're quite sure this frayed robe you're wearing would denounce you as a wizard in a heartbeat.

Azriel manages to sneak into the poachers getting a few feet from them without being noticed. He them mutters the enchantment to place a suggestion into the minds of one of the poachers to wander alone in the woods to go take a shit.

LP(10)/13

Promptly enough he tells his fellow poacher

"Ay, imma be heading into the bushes, gotta take a dump, ya can go back town without me, see you later."

The poacher then wanders off away from his friends. Azriel follows him and once he's busy taking a shit he finds a heavy stone, knocks him out with it, takes off his clothes. He then takes his ritual dagger and draws a pentagram of blood into the chest of the poacher, draining him of all his life force. You gain 2d6 LP. His corpse shrinks into a lifeless husk, the darkened skin tightening around the bones.

You also loot the bow and arrows of the poacher.

"Oh I'm so sorry about your village! The fields always need a strong hand ready to plow, you could pledge your allegiance to the local lord sir Thamond and become a serf. Or you could talk to mister Erard, the chief of the local hunters, perhaps he could get you a job as a poacher. But it's a rather dangerous ocupation, we never know when a witch can come out of the woods and attack you."

"Sounds dangerous indeed. But I'd rather hunt than become a serf. Guess I'll go talk to mister Erard. The meal was very good. Thanks for the nice conversation.

Azriel decides to go to the clothes shop to get a new set of clothes before going to talk to mister Erard, as he fears he would recognize the garments he stole from the poacher he stole life force from a few hours ago. The seamstress takes on his measurements and in a few hours Azriel has brand new tailor made clothing.

He then goes after Erard at the barracks at first. The local guards are sparring with swords when he arrives. There are about twenty of them. He asks one of the guards on duty who is not training about the whereabouts of Erard and is redirected to the hunter's cabin on the outskirts of the village.

Upon arriving at the cabin he finds a middle aged man managing the flow of meat from the poachers to the local market and the flow of money on the opposite way. He takes his cut of course.

"So you wanna be a hunter, huh? Do you know how to use that bow you're carrying? Show me your skills. Shoot at that dummy over there."

We quickly go back to the village to visit the blacksmith and browse their wares. They have plenty of swords and spears on sale, also a number of crossbows reasonably affordable. You could probably buy a sword or a crossbow, but not both.

You also decide to get a shave and a haircut. After leaving the barber shop you feel refreshed, a new man, ready to take on the challenges of your new life as a poacher.

Your then go hunt large game. Arriving at the forest you find yourself following the trails of the deers throughout the woods. It rained recently so there's lots of semi solid mud making the tracking somewhat easier. Roll 1d20 for tracking the deer, aiming for 13 or more. Best of three, or first linked if takes too long.

Azriel decides to go against his paranoid instincts and just act normal. He rents a bed at the inn and get a decent night's sleep. He hadn't sleeped soundly like this in a long time.

All this persecution of wizards has really messed up with his mind. He used to be a scholar and now he's a poacher, having to resort to killing people to get a fraction of his former powers. For how long can he live like this he doesn't know. In his dreams he sees a beautiful pale woman who tells him to follow her. As he does just that the whole dreamscape becomes a nightmarish craziness of random colors. He wakes up in the middle of the night panting. A nightmare. Of course. Not even in his sleep he finds peace.

After tumbling and rolling around a little he still manages to sleep a few more hours before dawn cracks and he gets up.

Azriel then decides to go check if the local lord has any work or bounties.

He walks towards the keep but once he reaches the doorway he's stopped by an armed guard.

"Halt! State your business in the keep."

"I'm looking for work or bounties that the Lord might have."

"So you're looking for mercenary work huh? What are your skill?"

"I'm pretty good with a bow and arrow."

"A marksman huh? Very well, come in."

You're then admitted entrance into the keep. On the main hall sit Thamond is sitting into a small silver throne.

"So you're the marksman who's looking for a job as a bounty hunter? Very well, I might have the sort of job you're looking for."

"Just yesterday one of my poachers was found dead, ressicated, drained of all his bodily fluids. It's certainly some sort of witchcraft, so we have a witch wandering around our village. If you manage to catch this witch I'll reward you handsomely."

You then take your leave from the keep.

Azriel decides to keep looking for the weird presence in the forest. He follows the trail left by the dragged robe for awhile until he trips and falls, rolling down a hill. He injures himself pretty badly and his clothes get torn a little. He then hears a muffled laughter that then erupts into a maniac cackle. It's coming from a tree right on top of you.

You see your robe torn to shreds fashioned into some sort of nest. In it a small humanoid creature with butterfly wings is pointing at you and laughing. You can barely believe your eyes. A faery?

Those were the first to be gone when the cataclysm struck. Faeries can't live without magic, they are intrinsically magical beings. You wonder how this little faery managed to survive.

"Can you speak my language?"

"I can speak many languages."

"How the hell are you still alive now that the magic is gone?"

"How the hell can you still cast magic now that the magic is gone?"

"I asked first."

"I drain mana from the environment. So long as I don't cast any spells everything around me starts to rot slowly. If I cast spells everything rots really fast. It's pretty sad. You?"

"Well I drain the life force of living creatures and turn it into mana."

"Also pretty sad. Magic used to be a fun thing."

"Yeah. You're pretty good at hiding."

"That's what we fey do. We hide from the prying eyes of humans and the like."

"Well it was a pleasure getting to know you, I need to go on my merry way now. Stay safe."

"Hey hey hey hold on. We freaks should stick together."

"What do you mean with "we freaks"? "

"Casters. The normals would kill us if they knew about our powers."

"Well I can't be seem with a tiny humanoid creature with wings."

"Well, that I can fix!"

She flies out of the tree into the ground and turns into what looks like a thirteen years old girl with long black hair wearing a purple dress. The trees around us all rot and their leaves fall.

"Tada, what do you think?"

What should we do next?

Azriel drains the fairy for LP, cuts off its wings and drags the body of the burnt fairy back town to claim the lord's reward for capturing a witch. He's all roughed up from falling down the hill so nobody doubts a horrible fight to the death took place. Everybody in the village now praises Azriel as the witch hunter who got rid of the witch who's been menacing their town. He claims that after the fight he burned the body of the witch fearing that otherwise it would come back from the dead.

Lord Thamond commends his wit in dealing with the witches and gives Azriel a hefty sum of gold pieces as reward, enough to buy a homestead or one of those fancy repeating crossbows that the witch hunters love so much.

Cool.
I dunno if our guy just wants to be a poacher. Are there any other places around the village to travel to and get more prestigious work?
> The inn
Let's ask if there are any rumors. Maybe some dungeons or something to delve into.
>>
>>2254015
Damn, so many ideas.

Okay, so I think research is a great idea. But we need intimacy to do that, notes, experimentation, etc. We should probably get a cabin near town, something steady, but not so close as to arouse suspicion. We're technically a poacher and everything, so it's fine.

Then, I think if we're planing to spend some time here, we should research some way to leech LP with less consequence. Either something like half the LP but the target survives, or full LP but without any obvious signs to the corpse (maybe a bit of dehydration or skinny, not something that looks so unnatural as we are doing right now)

Then, we should probably go to church to see how it is, and to further reinforce our cover.

So, tl;dr, I suggest we plan for the long run, and get ourselves a secluded place to live and eventually do research in the goal of making our LP drain more subtle. Meanwhile, we should go to church/mingle and look like a decent citizen.
>>
>>2254035
thats why i want to leech mana with items, like if we used a bow or cross bow, anything hit with the arrow or bolt will be leeched
>>
>>2254040
Yeah, but if mummified bodies start turning out, people will think there's another witch.
>>
>>2254045
doesnt need to be instant, nor full force, we can always try and give it more effects, like burning, or sleep effect with light leeching so we can grab them
>>
>>2254048
I'm okay with that.
As long as we cover our tracks because if we're gonna research it's gonna take some time, so that means staying in one place for a while, and that's dangerous in itself.
>>
>>2254048
I feel like making mana leeching weapons would require a real wizards lair with gear to enchant shit and could be too big of an investment for now, not to mention hard to hide.
>>
>>2254055
perhaps, but its something to work towards
>>
>>2254055
>>2254058
So I guess, for now, let's get ourselves a cabin or some homestead (since we got a reward that can buy such a thing) and plan for research later.

And, as I said, maybe mingle in town. Either to the inn for rumours/info or to church just to get to know/look good.

We'll probably get a couple free rounds of beer at the inn for slaying a witch too

Azriel considers acquiring a homestead near town with the money he got from the bounty. He wants a cabin near town, something steady but not so close as to arouse suspicion where he can have the privacy he needs to store notes and conduct experiments for his arcane research. His main concern is to either making the target survive the experience or minimize the signs to the corpse so as to not look so unnatural as what he's currently doing right now. Should Azriel build a homestead?
What should he focus his research on?
> Making the target survive the experience
> Minimizing the signs on the corpses

Azriel also thinks about creating mana leeching weapons but that would require lots of equipment to enchant magical items that he currently lacks; even in the hayday of magic creating magical items was a very expensive and taxing process, it's doubtful whether he'd be able to secure all the materials necessary for such a task with the scant resources he's currently able to mobilize.

Azriel starts frequenting the inn for rumours and information and the church to get to look good in the eyes of the local community. He hears rumours about a coven of witches terrorizing a neighbouring village in the west and rumours about cultists attempting to summon demons to make pacts for demonic powers in the east. You also hear talk about a community of wizards being formed in an oasis at the desert in the south and dragon sighting in the mountains north.

As he asks around about the cultists he learns that close to twenty people from Badum and nearby villages have disappeared misteriously during the night in the past few weeks and a lumberjack from the nearby village of Paham in the west named Gare swears that he saw three cloaked men carrying a limp body towards the swamps during the night. Progressing through the swamp proves very challenging as the watery terrain doesn't always have dry land so you fashion a large stick out of a tree branch to check the terrain ahead for places where you can have a more sure footing. After moving through the swamp all day you figure out that it will take longer than a day to cross the swamp or to fully investigate it. The prospect of sleeping in here is not very enticing, but marching through the swamp in the darkness would be extremelly difficult.

In the afternoon of the second day he catches sight of a ruined building in the swamp, some sort of temple.

Upon entering the ruined temple the stench of death assaults your nostrils. "I, AZRIEL THE OBSTINATE, WIZARD OF THE EAST, HAVE HEARD OF YOUR EXPLOITS, AND SEEK TO SPEAK WITH YOUR LEADER, THAT WE MIGHT FIND COMMON GROUND!"

At first you're met with an eerie silence but after a few minutes you hear footsteps coming from the spiral staircase. Seven hooded figures, one of them carrying a crossbow emerge from the depths of the ruined temple and quickly surround you. One of them steps forth and says

"I'm Dreder the leader of the cultists. It was a very bold move to announce your presence like that, we were about to summon a demon to do our bidding and grant us the boon of demonic magical powers. We are a life stealing bloodmage. I'm not concerned about what is legal or moral at this point because we've crossed the line. And nobody trusts demons, not even demons trust demons. The whole point of the cultist game is to glean power and knowledge from the demon without giving too much back, on purpose or by accident. We should have learned as much as we could from them, but now we have a whole bunch of illegals to murder loot drain and grab a bounty from. I'm fine with this outcome honestly.

Azriel decides to drain the fallen thugs life force. He applies his new techniques to not leave obvious marks of the draining but realizes that using this technique reduced the amount of lifeforce he can effectively drain from the corpses. The corpses are left showing signs of dehidration but nothing like the mummified state the lifeforce drain previously left them. So it's now a choice whether you want to drain without leaving obvious marks or drain every drop of life force they have left in them.

Azriel then continues marching towards the south. The road ends abruptly but he keeps going. On the sixth day of his travel he reaches the desert. He checks his water reserves; he can only hope to find the wizards in less than a week or risk running out of water in the middle of the desert.

Azriel then starts his march south, using the sun during the day and the stars during the night as a compass to make sure he's not just walking in circles in the shifting dunes.

On the fifth day walking though the desert he finally finds an encampment. A small tent city around an oasis; a large hole in the ground partially closed by a wooden door can be seem farther away. As Azriel gets closer he's approached by two men wielding crossbows. They say
"Halt. State your business in here."

As much as Azriel would love to meet up with the wizards and get his hands on some of those magical crystals, I doubt he'd want to risk getting perforated, bludgeoned, lynched, burned, salted, burned again, and scattered into the desert winds by peasant vigilantes.

"So long as you have a way to pay for them you can probably find someone willing to sell you whatever supplies you do need. As for water, take your fill, this oasis is a nascent from an underground reservoir, there's plenty of water to go around."

"The wizards dug this hole, there's some sort of crystal that let's them cast spells and they're mining it. They're hiring miners if you're interested, go talk to Gerey Foxe, he's in charge of the mining operations."

"Where can I find this Gerey Foxe?"

"He's down the hole on the first level. Go down the stairs and you'll find him."

"You said the wizards are in charge of digging this mine."

"Yes, they dug right through an aquifer, an outstanding feat of engineering if I might say myself."

"And you folks are okay with living amongst wizards."

"Desert people learn not to spit on the plate that once fed them. The wizards did alot for our people and we gladly allow them to continue pursueing their research in their time of need."

"I see. Most folks out there are hunting witches like there's no tomorrow."

Azriel decides to go talk to this Gerey Foxe.

As he descends a flight of stairs he kicks a small pebble down the shaft and it takes a few seconds before hitting the floor - the mine seems to be really deep. You find a partially opened door and once you step in front of it you hear a voice from inside saying

"Come on in, the door is unlocked."

You come in and you see a small studio filled to the brim with books in a huge bookcase on the wall opposite to the entrance. Right in front of this bookcase behind a cluttered desk is a bald old man with a long grey beard wearing a red robe. Next to him there's a bucket full of a blue-ish crystal. He is penning down something in a large book and doesn't stop as you come in. He barely lifts his eye to look at you at first but then he stops doing what he's doing lifts an eyebrow and look at you closely.

"Well well well, what do we have here. You're not your common desert dweller looking for a quick buck as a miner. What brings you here young man?"

Gerey Foxe then says

"You're welcome to come and go as you please friend. We've conducted extensive arcane research on the properties of the quork crystals and we can tell you that they are... imperfect. They accumulate naturally as the teluric energies get trapped on their way out from the center of the planet so there's plenty of those crystals to go around, at least for now. They tend to grow on deserts, in fact we're yet to find any mine of quork anywhere but on a desert. Perhaps the continuous incidence of energy from the spheres above reacts with the teluric energies to trap the mana inside the crystals. We're conducting research on trying to grow crystals artificially but we always spend more mana augmenting the crystal than it ends up storing. I can only dream about what kind of power Symes might have unlocked with his crysx mine."

"Symes? I heard about him before."

"You sure did. He's the one who started the whole mess of wizards interfering with worldly affairs decades ago. His siege of the principality of Faleroth is lendary. In the ranks of academia some say that he had information about the impending cataclysm and so went ahead and secured for himself the largest chunk of mana available. Crysx crystals are like quork crystals but better. They store mana more efficiently and growing them artificially is not as wasteful as it is with quork crystals. But they're exceedingly rare. In fact the only large scale crysx deposit in the known world was on the principality of Faleroth."

"And where exactly is this place?"

"Many miles south of here. It was a small province the king traditionally gifted their heir so that he could exercise their ruling capacity for when they became in charge of the kingdom. Now it's a fortress guarded by all sorts of magical beasts summoned by Symes to protect his precious crysx."

"Is he still alive after all this time?"

"Probably. A wizard of his power only dies if he really wants to. He's an archmage after all, there's very little an archmage can't do."

"This talk was very enlightening."

"And by the way I can't sleep tonight, could you arrange for me to be assign to patrol duty for the night?"

He walks to the guards and says

"I'm a wizard, Gerey Foxe sent me to reinforce guard duty for the night."

"You don't look like a wizard."

"Trust me, I'm a wizard. I won't waste mana proving that I'm one. "

"Very well. The nights in the desert are tranquil enough... until they aren't. Trouble can start and escalate very quickly so you better stay alert."

"Alright, I'll keep that in mind."

The cold breeze of the desert whips your face as you stand gazing into the ever shifting horizon under the light of the crescent moon and the stars.

Not long after a guy wearing a brown robe shows up.

"So you're the new guy Gerey Foxe told us about. The name is Vyncent."

"I'm Azriel."

"Nice to get to know you Azriel. Hey what is that thing coming our way?"

You all turn your attention to a small dust cloud in the horizon.

"I have no idea" says Azriel

"You have a good pair of eyes kid. Those are desert elves. They must be hunting something, they don't normally wander this close to us."

"Don't elves live in forests?"

"Well they used to, but without their magic they're being wiped out. Many tribes of elves choose to live on deserts instead. They sometimes trade with the wizards for crystals."

"And what do they bring to the table in those transactions?"

"Information, food, military aid. Stuff that keeps us alive. We desert people are forced by our environment to keep things simple."

"I see. So what do we do about them? "

"We just watch. They'll probably leave soon."

After some minutes the small dust cloud disappears in the horizon.

The rest of the night goes on uneventfully. By dawn two other wizards come to take your places on patrol duty, a redheaded girl in a green robe called Brilda and one tall guy in a black robe called Ewis.

>>
>>2258714
>>2258728

Azriel decides to tell Gerey Foxe about the grimoire he looted.

"I asked about greater demons because I looted a grimoire from some cultists that had a ritual spell to summon one."

"I see. Magic is a manifold path, a tool for whatever end one might have for it. That was why for the longest time the wizard's guild enforced neutrality in the worldly affairs to our members. The magic we wield could easily change the balance of power in the world, for better or worse. Cultists are a power hungry bunch, unwilling or unable to put in the work that it takes to develop magic naturally over the years they look for shortcuts in the dark arts. They tend to be met with terrible fates. It's hard to imagine a good reason to summon evil extraplanar entities, but in the twisted minds of a cultist such a being is a gateway for power. You have a safe place to store your grimoires then?"

"Safe enough for now. I mostly use spells that I know by heart."

"A very smart move. A wizard that is constantly on the move can't always rely on its grimoires for the daily memorization of spells. But the mind can only hold so many spells. Eventually you'll need a place to store your grimoires."

"Yeah I really need to figure out a way to better hide my grimoires from any nosy peasants and witch hunter lunatics, or I could end up facing an ambush when I least expect it."

"We don't have all that much magical supplies as they're really hard to come by these times. This might not be the royal academy but we have a nice collection of grimoires in here. If you manage to secure magical supplies of your own or convince some of our wizard friends to part with their few remaining supplies you could probably copy some spells into your own grimoire."

"I'll keep that in mind. May I participate in the scry rituals?"

"Oh of course! Come with me, the preparations should be complete by now."

Gerey Foxe takes Azriel into an underground chamber. Twelve wizards are present in there. A thin tall wizard with a full white beard is in front of a pulpit with an open grimoire in front of him while the remaining wizards are around a large silver mirror placed in the center of the room. Each of them is holding a small piece of crystal and a thin strip of scribbled paper.

"Andrey, this visiting wizard would like to take part in the scrying rituals"

"Very well, position yourself around the silver mirror. Take this piece of paper and hold this piece of quork. I need you to concentrate and start chanting when I give you the signal. The ceremony will begin momentarily."

Vyncent is near you. He says:
"Andrey or Gerey could cast the spell by themselves but doing it ritualistically spends less mana."

Andrey starts reading from the book and signals for us to start chanting. When we are several minutes into the chant the image in the silver mirror starts to get foggy. From beyond the fog an image of a marching group of spearmen can be seen.
>>
>>2258816

The man then says

"C'mon move! We're going to storm Addcot in three days! "

You infer that by Addcot he's referring to this settlement, even though you never heard anyone refer to it by this name.

The wizard keep scrying some more to see the full extent of the forces being sent against us. Turns out there are about 20 trained mounted soldiers and nearly 300 conscripted spearmen militia marching towards the wizard settlement of Addcot.

Once the ritual is finished Andrey gets back the pieces of paper and the unspent quork crystals.

Gerey Foxe says
"This is very serious. It's a very large number of soldiers, will be a hard fight. Many lives will likely be lost. We'll need everyone ready to rain upon them our best offensive spells."

Andrey says

"We could send a group to do a hit and run attack on them before they reach our camp to thin their numbers."

"That would be too dangerous Andrey."

"This is an all out war not one of your classes Gerey, our very lives are at stake either way. We should pick volunteers to send for this hit and run attack."

"Do we even have enough horses in our camp for a hit and run?"

"We have six horses in our camp, that should be enough."

"Are you proposing to send half our force?"

"Not only that, but the best half of our forces on this counter raid. We must pre emptively wreak havoc on that army before they can get us."

"Our camp will become defenseless with just our youngest to defend it. I propose that if we're really going on with this mad plan we send volunteers, or at the very least a mixed group with both our best and our lesser wizards."

"This is a tactical assault Gerey, we need our very best on it."

We're still too far away to cast fireball.

We need to perform a wizardly run n' gun manuever, otherwise we'll be overpowered, because we decided to attack them when they're still on the march for whatever reason. Maybe all this magic's fried our brain.

Azriel decides to try flanking the enemy army; he goes around the bulk of their troops and close into range for fireballs. He considers using detect magic just in case they might have enchanted weaponry but decides against it for it's a relatively short ranged spell that requires prolongued concentration and he must be ready to throw other offensive spells in the battlefield ahead of him.

The spearmen in the army start adopting a spread out formation to become harder targets for area spells.

Gerey manages to land an ice storm spell on top of their army long before we get into range for fireball and before the spearmen spreaded much throughout the battlefield; he manages to kill off dozens of soldiers with the magical hail.

You finally get into fireball range and throw a fireball at the enemy lines.

It hits several spearmen, thining their numbers in the side of the battlefield that you decided to go flank.

On the opposite side of the battlefield Brilda and Andrey get in range for fireball and throw their spells also to great effect amidst the spearmen. By flanking them we're forcing them to spread in all directions.

Ewis and Thorim met the army head on and also throw fireballs at them, making holes in their front lines.

The mounted soldiers take potshots at the closest wizards with their crossbows.

One crossbowmen lands a hit on Ewin, three crossbowmen lands hits on Thorim knocking him out of his horse who falls crippled, one crossbowmen lands a hit at Brilda and one crossbowmen lands a hit at Andrey. Gerey was out of range and wasn't targeted.

Ewis rides towards Thorim and picks him up them rides away from the encroaching army.

Brilda and Andrey throw two more fireballs at the enemy army, now to lesser effect since they're in a spread out formation.

Gerey comes closes to the enemy troops and summons a pit of black tentacles in the mob in front of Thorim and Ewin, the tentacles crush a large number of soldiers before they wise up and scatter around it giving time for Ewin and Thorim to start fleeing the battlefield.

Azriel manages to hold steady on his horse.

Trying to ignore the searing pain of the crossbow bolsts deeply sunk into his flesh he manages to cast a couple more fireballs, this time centered on the professional soldiers. Their scorched mountes fall down as their riders perish engulfed in the magical flame of your exploding orbs of fiery destruction.

Ewin and Thorin also throw a couple more fireballs before getting away out of range, thinning the group of spearmen running towards them.

Gerey throws his first fireball of the day right on top of what appear to be the commanding officer of this whole battalion, scorching the very ground where he once were and reducing him to charred remains.

Brilda and Andrey likewise begin their retreat by throwing a couple more fireballs making sure their path out of this mess is clear.

You can clearly see the surviving soldiers preparing another volley of crossbow bolts while the remaining masses of spearmen advance towards our general direction.

Azriel decides not to overextend himself and begin retreating. Even though we caused some serious damage there's still a rather large army coming our way, it would get ugly if we had to face the whole army specially after our teamates having spent most of their offensive spells. We already completed our objectives by inflicting damage to them anyway.

Still, before getting out of range Azriel still finds time to throw one last fireball.

Ewin and Thorim are in full retreat and so are Brida and Audrey. Gerey Foxe noticed we're all retreating and throw one last fireball before beginning retreating with the rest of us.

Andrey then says
"I've been aware of the possibility of draining the life force of fallen enemies to use it as a source of mana for awhile now but hadn't dared attempt that myself. I fear that times are such that we can no longer be picky about what sources of mana we use, and despite the bad reputation that blood magic has rightfully acquired over the years I do believe that it would be wise on our part to study it and become acquainted with how to use it to our advantage."

Gerey Foxe says
"Cursed will be the day when I'll be forced to damn the soul of another to oblivion in order to power my spellcasting! I think you're all jumping the gun too quickly. Quork crystals have proved to be remarkably effective at mimicking the old source of mana, I see no reason to resort to soiling our hands with such a despicable practice."

Ewis then says
"Gerey you're being unreasonable. As Azriel stated and demonstrated blood magic can be far more convenient for use in the battlefield, and it's not like we'll ever run out of foes to slay and drain for more mana with the madness of all these witch hunts going on around the kingdom. I'd say it's a sustainable source of mana, we could even research how to harvest just enough life force from a living being to power our magic without killing them, leaving them to regain it by the natural processes of their bodily regeneration."

Brilda then says
"Andrey and Ewis are right Gerey, we should at the very least give it a try. Blood magic seems ripe with potential in these times of uncertainty and persecution and I want to learn it. If there's a simple and efficient way to acquire mana on my own without needing to depend on mining crystals I would like to know about it and use it in my daily practice."

Our very survival is at stake and the powers we grew to depend upon waned. A new horizon opens up to us. We could even start a new order, we could call ourselves the blood mages, sounds good don't you think?"

Gerey Foxes then says
"We don't need to be this drastic Azriel, you're welcome on Addcot and you have plenty of eager pupils already. Seems like I'm completely outvoted. Your sensibilities are numb about the destiny of the souls of those you're draining to power your daily fix of magic. I wouldn't go so far as to call the practice of blood magic sustainable, but as a last resort measure I agree to both learn and teach it. It's a point I can't deny that we really need to learn as many ways to acquire mana as are available to us, but we shouldn't simply throw out all ethical concerns simply because it's easier to do so."

Andrey then says
"Ethics be damned Gerey, those men are bent on killing us on principle, they're not after us for anything we did against them, they're after us because we exist as beings capable of wielding magical powers to alter reality. I'm afraid witch hunts will go on until every last magician is dead and gone if we don't reassert our dominance over the common rabble and the way to do so is through learning as many ways to use magic as possible, blood magic included."

Brilda then says
"I have a spare grimoire you can use Azriel, I'll share with you some of my arcane supplies if you promise to come with me later to look for more."

Azriel says "Sounds good to me."

Andrey then says

Azriel decides to start the lessons on blood magic with the better wizards.

Gerey Foxe then says
"I was expecting to get a good night of sleep before attending any classes but you seem quite obstinate in doing this right now so let's start with it."

The same group that went on the raid gets together at the room where we had performed the scry ritual earlier.

"Before it all began I was researching ways to increase the amount of spells a wizard could cast daily by storing life force unto himself by magically stealing it from others ritualistically." says Azriel.

"That's sort of a grey area research.", says Gerey Foxe.

"I know. At first I only used farm animals on my research but when this whole thing happened I was forced by the circumstances to try it with humans and suceeded to greater effect. I even perfected the ritual to not leave so clear marks of having drained the body of it's magical energy, but let's stick to the basics for now. Draw these diagrams..."

Azriel then shows the wizards how to perform the basic life force draining ritual.

"It's a relatively simple ritual so you guys should be able to perfect the form on how to do it in a few days. There are a bunch of parameters that can be changed as you certainly noticed and as such if you research enough you can tailor it to your needs. It would be good to acquire some live farm animals like cattle or something so that we could try it before doing it on the battlefield.", says Azriel.

"You mentioned you drained life force from dead bodies?", says Ewis.

"Yes. Fresh bodies still retain some lifeforce, although it fades very quickly. I believe the head of a slain enemy should retain enough magical energies to cast some spells for awhile longer but I haven't researched this enough myself."

"This will certainly be very useful, thanks for showing us how to perform this ritual.", says Brilda.

"You're welcome. Now what about that spare grimoire you had, I want to start relearning some utility spells from Addcot's library."

"There you have it"

As tired as Azriel is he can find no excuse not to teach each wizard the art of draining the dead - he figures that he can learn spells after the battle, it's best not to wait to show the next generation how to wield the life force of their foes.

He prepares himself again to go through the whole presentation once more, explaining further details that needed not be expanded upon when he presented the subject to a more mature audience. Some of these wizards had a very poor grasp of ritual magic - two of the youngest students, sisters called Sabil and Meera dragged the whole class nearly to a halt by asking very basic questions about ritual magic that took Azriel very long to explain. After about six hours lecturing about blood magic he's confident his pupils got the basics down, although without a bunch of farm animals for trial runs of the rituals we can't really be sure.

One can only hope that the students learned it well enough to apply the knowledge when the need arises.

I have it in my grimoire, I ought to use it more often myself, could've saved me skin back during that volley of crossbow bolts."

Azriel writes in his grimoire the cantrip Blade Ward.

He then finds himself a bed and go to sleep, exhausted, since he hasn't slept in several days.

After slumbering for the best part of morning he wakes up the next day. As he heads for the mess hall to grab himself some grub he mets Brilda. She says
"I know of a place likely to have some extra supplies for inscribing our spells, do you want to come with me to go retrieve it?"

Before you can answer Gerey Foxe shows up and say "We're going to scry the peasant army coming our way again. Do you guys want to come partake in the ritual with us?"

Ewis says "I'm going to find myself some wild game to test the life force draining ritual on. I'm pretty sure I got the ritual down but I wanna test it."

A group of miners in the mess hall says to Andrey "We've found a gem deposit while mining, the gems are small but we're pretty sure those are rubies. We could sell those in Saford and make a fortune" and Andrey answer
"Yes we could but who would we send? The town is past Stiford, the town launching raids towards us. We're better off stockpiling those for now."

"The peasant army gave up on their assault; without their leader and reduced to about third of its initial force they decided to march back to stiford. We overhead plans to get reinforcements from Badum and Saford. I guess that's not the last time we'll have to face an incoming army."

Ewis says "I've got a deer and managed to drain it's life force. It's astounding how the ritual leaves behind a mummified carcass. I felt a small surge of power hard to describe. Blood magic is really something."

Wouldn't want to be suspicious. If we can, while we're there let's ask around for any rumors and information about regional happenings. Is there word of a strongman who plans to unite the separate townships, or anything about man-eating monsters or mysterious corpse mutilations?
>>
>>2262274

Azriel decides to partake in the local harvest festivities, reckoning it could be construed as suspicious to not show up for no good reason.
There are several contests - strenght, archery, combat, cooking, dancing, painting amongst others. Badum is a relatively small village and you weren't aware that the locals were so artistically inclined.
Azriel inquires around about rumors and informations on regional happenings. He gets the news of the attack on the wizard community being frustrated by a group of about ten wizards who rained fireballs and murdered the local leader sir Aemband. Now his son, sir Vyncis, only 19 years old is now the noble in charge of the village of Stiford. He seems much less inclined on going on raids now that a good chunk of the local population died in a frustrated attack. Word around is that he is asking the count of Saford for funding to train a specialized army of witch hunters, reckoning that the traditional armies of old are inneffective against wizards.
Paham, Badum and Stiford are part of Saford county. Technically Addcot would be too, but it's been decades since the last time they paid anything to the tax collectors or received anything in exchange for their taxes for that matter. South of Saford is the duchy of Erel, the nearest city being Lafiholm. Further to the east are the royal lands proper, centered around Arakin the capital of the realm from where king Conrad rules these lands. The king is probably too busy organizing the efforts for the possible war against the orcish tribes in the east who grow increasingly aggressive to worry much about minor local problems.

Azriel hear from some caravan men rumours about a tribe of trolls near Stiford. Word is that they migrated from their homes in the northern mountains, perhaps fleeing from some other creature powerful enough to drive them out of their lands. So far they didn't cause much trouble to the locals except for scaring and make the work of the local poachers more difficult but with trolls you never know.

Azriel also hears about a town called Tabryc, north of Saford, who's having problems with elves. They raided the local elvish tribe but failed to root them out of their lands and now the elves are retributing the raid by stealing their cattle, murdering their poachers and kidnaping their children. The local militia is constantly on high alert but the elves even without their magic are too cunning and frequently manage to slip past the constant patrols to wreak havoc in the small town.

Azriel decides to leave his grimoires at his homestead in Badum. Better to travel light.
He fills his backpack with enough dry rations for a couple weeks and starts his journey towards the mountains north where it is said there has been sightings of dragons.

He treks for a couple days through the forests before reaching the slopes that mark the beginning of the mountain ranges that surround the county of Saford and separate it from the dwarven lands in the north and the barony of Valorien in the northwest.
Climbing the mountains is no easy task and Azriel is not accustomed to such exertion; he has to stop to catch his breath every now and then. You can clearly see how having wings would make for a much easier trip throughout these mountain ranges.

On the ninth day of his journey he sees it - a young white dragon flying through the sky, catching a deer in the forest below and then flying off with it to the top of a mist engulfed far away mountain.

The climb is an exhausting experience but Azriel soldiers on. As he's about to reach the mountaintop he catches sight of a wide opening in the mountain side; at first you believe it to be a natural cave likely formed by wind erosion but closer inspection shows that it has clear signs of having been escavated. Looks like you found the dragon's lair, you can only wonder what dangers lie within the walls of these caves.

Azriel ponders his chances against a young white dragon. His fireballs should be powerful enough to damage the beast and if he manage to cripple it fast enough before it can retaliate we stand a chance against it. A slim chance, but a chance nevertheless.

If what he heard about dragons is right they're are intelligent sentient beasts whose power is only exceeded by their greed. They tend to enslave lesser races to do their bidding in their lairs. Azriel ponders that since there's a smaller tunnel in the dragon's lair there must be servants of some kind roaming the place. Perhaps if he scouts the lair he can figure out how to lay a trap for the beast or at least deal with its servants before having to face the dragon itself.

Azriel decides to turn left. After walking through the tunnel for awhile he stumbles upon a stretched out thin rope. Roll 12+ for noticing the trap in time.

The bunch is snarling and screaming, excited for the opportunity at inflicting suffering upon an outnumbered oponent. They seem puzzled by your appearance and hesitate a little.

"A wizard? Boys we got a wizard. What a catch! The boss will be happy! Come with us wizard, we'll take you to our leader now!"

The ten goblins surround you and go around saying to each other things like "A wizard, who would have thought." "We got him." "He fell on the trap" "Boss will be happy." "Been awhile since no visitors." "I'm hungry what's for dinner." "What is a wizard doing here?" and so on back and fort in a snarky tone.

After walking for awhile you arrive at a central chamber filled with goblins. A number of other smaller tunnels go out in all directions. Seems like the goblins are haphazardly attempting to mine the mountain but the various signs of cave ins show that they're not very versed at safety measures and are digging without mining supports. There are also a large area with several pens with boars, and a vast mushroom farm.

Around the middle of the chamber is a fat goblin about nearly the size of a human sitting in a bronze throne.
"Who dares intrude in my domains?", he says in a booming voice.

Azriel says
"I'm a wizard and came here to lead your people out of the stone age. You're mining inefficiently, I can show you how you can mine better by a simple application of sufficiently spaced mining supports you could mine much more safely and profitably."

"Perhaps you're right stranger but the truth is we only mine because the white dragon who lives in this cave wants us to find him a gold mine so he can live to a ripe old age without having to resort to looting and raiding villages and towns to plunder their gold. But we're dabbling miners at best. What are those mining supports you talk about?"

"Sturdy tree trunks placed to support the weight of the ceiling as you go on mining. They decrease the likelihood of cave in."

"How we didn't think of doing that before? Thank you stranger, we'll start cutting trees and dragging them up the mountain to serve as mine support."

The goblins around start complaining "I won't cut any trees" "I don't like the sun." "Can we cut trees by night." "Trees are heavy" "Can't carry trees up the mountain it's unnatural." "Trees will just roll down if we try to bring them up the mountain." "What if we try to carry them up our heads." "Tree would just crush us." "Oh great more job for no pay." "At least I won't have to dig in the mines." "My cousin died in a cave in." "I almost died in a cave in" "Are supports safe? " and so on.

The goblin leader then says
"Let's throw a feast to celebrate the new mining knowledge the obstinate wizard Azriel shared with us! Slaughted the boars!"

"Yay feast!" "Oh nice I'll eat meat" "Was tired of eating mushrooms" "Meat is always good" "Who will cook the pork" "I can cook it" "Kill it before cooking it" "Give me your sword I need it to kill the pork" "Let's eat our fill tonight." "I love eating it's so fun." and so on.

They serve a number of roasted boars and receive Azriel as their guest. About an hour into the feast a slender looking elf in a white robe walks into the cave and the goblins all run around panicked and form ranks screaming "Nezzabi, it's Nezzabi run run form ranks fast, it's Nezzabi."

The elf then says
"Why are you roasting pigs Gorg, what's the occasion? "

"This wizard just taught us how to use mining supports to make our mining more efficient?"

They're not particularly strong nor smart but they're numerous and I see potential in them for the long run. I had them start mining because I'm in dire need of more gold and I'd rather not risk myself raiding local villages for gold if it can be helped. This. Be sure to refer to him as Nezzabisumuraolarnanzeru, we're a Wizard, the pronunciation of most higher level spells is at least thrice as complicated, and we're no illiterate mongoloid that needs to get by on a three syllable-shortening of a dragon's proper name.

"I could ask the same thing from you Nezzabisumuraolarnanzeru. Shouldn't all magical beasts be dead now that the magic of the world is gone?"

"A dragon's heart accumulates mana from the environment over time. It seems that the heart has always been the source of a dragon's magical powers. But you still haven't answered my question."

"I use a combination of blood magic and quork crystals to power my magic. Blood magic works by converting the life force of a fallen enemy into mana while quork crystals naturally store magical powers that can be tapped into by a wizard."

"Fascinating. But now that you know about my lair I'm afraid I must take measures to preserve my secret."

"Don't worry, I swear to keep it a secret. In fact I wish we could become long term trade partners. I'll even part with some of my quork crystals as a token of good will."

"Are you trying to hire me as a mercenary?"

"I prefer to consider you as a trade partner. I'm sure we'll find things that are mutually beneficial that we could trade with each other, I just said the first thing that came to mind. I could for instance educate your servants on proper mining techniques. I just want to make sure the deal is fair for both sides."

"I'm not very comfortable with the idea of a wizard intruding into my lair whenever he pleases."

"I'll always make sure to contact the goblins first when I arrive then."

"Is this your real appearance? Haven't heard of dragonkin in these lands."
> No it isn't, I used an alter self spell

Eat, teach and stay out of the dragons way. No real need to recast the spell if he doesnt see us and the goblins are shit at describing. Cover our face, teach, get some phat lewt for our know-how and ask about the lay of the land, any interesting places, abandoned libraries and so on.

Azriel admits that the draconic like appearance he adopt isn't his real one, but doesn't see the need to show his real appearance to the dragon.

When he turns back to human the goblins exclaim in surprise "He's really a wizard he turned into a human now!" "Which is the real one the scaly or the pinky?" "I think I like the pinky one better." "How can you be sure he's the same person?" "He's in the same place doing the same thing." "Well I'm in the same place and doing the same things as you but I'm not you." "You always ask the stupidest questions." "When will I'll see scaly wizard again?" "Wizards are really crafty."

He decides to eat his fill of roasted boar with the goblins and keep teaching them how to build mining supports. The goblins bring back some trees from the forest below and Azriel shows them how they can use the trees trunks to prop up the cave ceiling to make cave ins less likely.

He then asks the goblins about the lay of the land and whether they know of any interesting places like abandoned libraries or other places of interest. The goblins start talking incessantly
"I know a cave where lives a bear!" "I went to a lake once." "Weren't the lake where the elves take baths? " "Elves smell good because they take baths often." "I don't like elves they look at me with disgust." "My cousin was killed by an elf." "I almost got killed by an elf myself." "There are too many elves in the forest that's why we live in the mountains." "Elves don't like us they shoot at us." "I didn't do anything and the elf shot at me." "Elves are rude." "I never saw an elf" "You're lucky." "How many elves are there in the forest?" "Too many." "What are libraries for?" "They store books in there." "Can I eat books?" "Books are not for eating dummy, books are for starting fires." "Ah, I wish I had a book, would be easier to roast boar." "My hands still hurt from lighting the fire." "That boar tasted very good." "Where can I get a book?" "I don't know been awhile since I last saw a book." "Where dide you saw a book?" "I saw it in a wagon." "What is a wagon?" "It's a wooden box with people inside pulled by oxen." "And what is oxen?" "They're like boars but larger and they have horns in their heads instead of fangs." "Oxen eat grass." "Oxen are big and pull heavy things."

After awhile Azriel gets tired of trying to make sense of what the goblins are saying.

He bids the goblin leader farewell and start his trip back to his homestead in Badum. The goblin leader gifts him some roasted boar for the trip. The trip back home is largely uneventful, aside from meeting some local poachers in the forest when he's getting closer to Badum.

Once he's back in his house he sleeps until he feels well rested.

"It's dangerous to be asking around about witches in this town, they've been on a fullblown witch hunt for several months and if they so much as suspect you're involved with witches they'll burn you at the stake. I've noticed your pouch, those are quork crystals you're carrying there aren't they?"

"How do you know about quork crystals?"

"I'm Hedi. I'm also a wizard, but I've had to ditch my grimoire to avoid persecution and I've been out of mana for a long time. The witches you seek are three sisters called Joyce, Syvel and Fryde. They used to rule over this town back when it was fashionable for wizards to take over towns. They're not bad people. Back when I lived in Saford we used to have tea together now and then. Fryde is a competent illusionist so they're probably hiding behind some sort of illusory wall. Stay safe my friend."

"Wait, don't you want some quork crystals?"

"Nah, those would just blow my cover. Besides without my grimoire I couldn't cast any spells at all. I never had that good of a memory, I kept doing the cast and forget thing so common amongst wizards, never really memorized any except the most basic cantrips. I'm saving up money to travel northwest, I heard that in Valorien they're not given to this common craze of killing wizards for the local army is highly reliant on wizards to defend themselves against the dangerous monsters that come from the north from time to time. They're far away enough from the capital to not have to care about royal edicts. I want to check out how wizard friendly they actually are."

"If you're looking for a wizard friendly community there's the village of Addcot in the desert south of here."

"The village the folks here tried to raid? The local nobles are going crazy about that village, they're training a bunch of specialized witch hunters armed with those fancy expensive repeating crossbows to go get the wizards in there. I don't know how good are their defenses but I'm not sure if they'll survive more than a year or two considering the powers that are being amassed to root them out. In any case it's nice to know that there's a place within walking distance that I could go in case things go wrong in here, thanks for the information."

"No thank you my friend, you've been very helpful"

Hedi bids Azriel farewell then heads back inside the inn

"So you cast spells by draining mana from the environment?"

"To make a long story short yes. We were scholars trying to come up with ways to use magic to make people's life better. My research was into creating magical food and enhancing natural grown food with magic. Turns out that tweaking a little this kind of magic I could drain energy from the environment to throw my spells. My sisters also had their own research and figured out similar ways to get alternative sources of mana. We had taken over the village and ruled it for about fifteen years. Then the peasantry revolted against us once our magic began to faulter. We had to resort to hiding. My sisters are out hunting to get magical energy to cast their spells. The peasants say we're terrorizing them but my sisters did little more than take some cattle to refill their magical energies, and now they're training an army to come after us. To be quite frank all this situation is very scary. I don't wanna die like this."

"None of us want to die in this stupid war."

Our surroundings? Well I don't get out all that much, I wouldn't know any specific details but I can give you a general idea.
To our north there's a large elvish tribe, there must be thousands of them, living in the forest. They're not normally aggresive towards humans but the villagers from Tabryc attacked them months ago and they're now enraged. Sybel told me that the elves figured out a way to use magic similar to the way that I do it, but using magic causes then much suffering seeing the forest around them wither and die so they opt for not using it unless it's absolutely necessary.
To our east there's the local capital the town of Saford. It was once ruled by a wizard called Ames but he was executed in the early days of the cataclysm and now the rule is back in the hands of the local noble. Been years since I last been there but as far as I remember the palace and gardens in there are splendid.
To the west there's a small village called Badum. Traders from that village come here to sell their produce from time to time. I don't know much about it.
To the southwest of here there's a desert, a climatic oddity. Some elves migrated there recently.
To the southeast there's a town called Lafiholm. It's the closest town of the duchy of Erel. They're a highly militarized bunch, their army consisting of a large number of horsemen. I only went there as a child so I can't really give you any useful information about the place. Fryde said they had a very large library of arcane arts, I wonder whether or not they destroyed it.

But tell me about you. How can a wizard like you travel around unharmed in these crazy times?

> Nobody knew me around these parts I just made sure not to wear wizard robes nor cast spells when people were around
Seems basic. Unless someone knows you or you expose yourself they have no need to kill random peons off the street. Can the hunters detect magic in any way?

"Nobody knew me around these parts I just made sure not to wear wizard robes nor cast spells when people were around."

"We hadn't the same fate. Our luck is that we noticed quickly that magic wasn't working as before right as the cataclysm hit, otherwise we would've been killed by an angry mob. Sir Aemband quickly gathered his soldiers and went looking for us once the news that magic was fading reached town but Fryde was able to save us with her illusions."

"Joyce who's this guy?" she says adopting a defensive casting stance.
"Calm down Sybel. His name is Azriel. He's a wizard like us. He knows Hedi."
"Hedi's still alive? Now that's some good news!"

"How was the hunt?"

"I killed a couple deer, should have enough magic for a few more spells."

A third redhead with green eyes show up.
"Oh, looks like we have a guest", she says as she assumes a defensive casting stance.
"Fryde this is Azriel. He's a wizard like us, he knows Hedi."

"Hedi is alive? Thank goodness!"
"I thought our hideout was very good, guess we'll need to find a new one. The dead trees around are giving it away.", Fryde says, looking at Joyce
"Sorry, sometimes I can't help it but use magic"
"It's ok, but if it was a witch hunter we would be in a world of hurt now"
"How did you do today Fryde"
"I found a few quork crystals in the desert, they should be enough for our bare necessities for awhile."

"Do you gather quork crystals in the desert?"

"Yes I do. There's an abandoned depleted diamond mine that has plenty of quork in it."

"Tomorrow we're going to scout for another place to move into, perhaps somewhere closer to the desert, it takes me too long to walk there to get mana crystals. I heard about a community of wizards living there, I wonder what it looks like."

"I don't know Fryde, it's better not to draw too much attention to ourselves. In the early days of the witch hunts magicians tried to stick together but it only made it easier for the mobs to overrun them. We have to manage our scarce resources very carefully"

"Then we should move to the mountains in the north. We could live off hunting, I'm sure you could teach me how to drain energy from living creatures like you do Sybel. And when you need to cast spells you'll have to move away from our hideout to not give away our position Joyce"

"That's probably for the best Fryde", says Sybel.

"I don't know. The mountains are a dangerous place, there are dragons in there.", says Joyce.

"We could also move to the forest. I wonder how the elves would take us in their lands.", says Sybel.

"Wait are you guys moving because of me?", says Azriel

"Not quite, although you exposed the vulnerability of our hideout. We've been planning to move for awhile but the plan never materializes. Guess now is as good a time as any."

What should Azriel tell them?
> You should move to the wizard settlement in the south
> You should move to the abandoned quork mine

>You should move to the wizard settlement in the south
Lots of crystals, good area for defences (desert attrition) and if you apply yourself, a lot of opportunity to not only use magic but use it freely. Fortify the settlement and trap the area and you are safe from the mob. Especially with some illusion magic. Come to think of it, do you have any spells I could learn?

Try to gain magic from them, push them to the desert village and try to claim the reward for witch hunting. Maybe drain a corpse and leave it in the hut, make it seem like you killed the witch? Would get some heat off of them and get us some gold/friendly status with the town. Be sure to alter self if we do decide to go through with this.

These both work but lets not exploit these sisters like we did with that Fae.

I agree, in these trying times, magic users should stick together, preferably under our benevolent rule but militant collective magicentrism is a fine alternative.

Azriel says
"You should move to the wizard settlement in the south, it's a village called Addcot with a wizard called Gerey Foxe in charge, in these trying times magic users should stick together, they have a quork mine and a good area for defense through desert attrition and if you apply yourselves a lot of opportunities to not only use your magic but use it freely. I believe that if the settlement is fortified and the area trapped it could be made safe from the mob, specially with some illusion magic."

"We'll take that into consideration", says Fryde.

"Come to think of it, do you have any spells I could learn?"

"We could lend you our grimoires for you to copy some spells to your own if you have the supplies for it.", says Fryde.

"I didn't bring any grimoires, wasn't sure how long I would be out there looking for you and preferred to travel lightly.", says Azriel.

"Such a shame. Well, guess you can find us at this wizard settlement later then. I'm eager to finally be able to use magic freely again.", says Joyce.

"Do you really think we'll be safer by joining up with other wizards? I think a large community of wizards is a timebomb just waiting to explode.", says Sybel.

"What do you mean Sybel?", says Joyce.

"Think about it. No matter how you slice it our magical resources are very low, we can only dig out so many crystals or hunt so much game. There will be strife about who gets how much magic when, it's unavoidable.", says Sybel.

"Well, we could always go to the abandoned quork mine.", says Fryde.

"Sure, but then we'd have to do all the mining work ourselves. I reckon that in the wizard settlement they have peasants do the mining work for them?", says Sybel

"That's right, wizards and hired peasants work together in the quork mines.", says Azriel.

"I've placed a permanent illusion hiding the quork mine, it should remain as a fallback option for us. I guess we're packing up and going to that wizard friendly settlement soon. Addcot huh? It will be our new home.", says Fryde.

"I'll go acquire a wagon and some steeds for us in the local village.", says Sybel.

"Be careful.", says Joyce.

"I always am.", says Sybel.

"Now I don't mean to be rude with a guest but we have lots of work to do with our relocation effort, if you don't mind...", says Fryde.

"Oh, I'm taking my leave. I'll meet you all again in Addcot", says Azriel.

Azriel then leaves the witches hideout.

What should Azriel do next?

I think we should buy a horse if it's not to much. We do travel a lot and we could carry more items

Azriel decides to go buy a horse at Stiford. He roams the city until he finds the local stables and start negotiating for a good price on a young horse.
As he's leaving town with his new purchase a guy with half his face burnt look at him and screams "It's him! It's the wizard who burned my face! Get him! A WIZARD! A WIZARD!"

The local peasants get startled and a mob starts to form around Azriel. What do Azriel do?

> Try to pacify the mob, roll 19+ for diplomacy
> Leave the horse behind and run through the alleys of Stiford to try and get away from the angry mob, roll 14+
> Mount the horse and leave the town as fast as you can, roll 12+ to maneuver through the mob
> Mount the horse and leave town as fast as you can throw fireballs to clear your path if you must

Reply "No, I am hunting this man because he is a wizard" and deliver a kick to the chest of the man
Secretly cast alter appearance on the man and change him into a wizard as he hits the ground

Sorry but alter self spell only works on yourself, you can't change someone else's appearance.
