You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you and your party were on your way to a distant farming settlement that was apparently having some ogre problems. Something a Black Templar champion was made to deal with. Of course, the journey there was anything but quiet, considering the talkative nature of your party.

"The situation must be really bad," Naru sighs, "when I consider going out on another half assed quest as a welcome change of pace."

"Mmmmm, to be fair, there's a lot of royal drama going on back at the city." Niko shrugs casually. "So it makes sense."

"You seem to be treating this all pretty lightly." Morgan frowns at Niko. "Aren't you a princess?"

"WAS a princess." Niko corrects. "I left exactly because I didn't want to deal with shit like this!"

"Doesn't sound particularly responsible." Morgan points out.

"Eh." Niko just shrugs.

"Yeah! I think Naru would make a great princess since she's super responsible!" Nino chimes.

"Squirt, don't say made up stuff like that." Naru groans.

Romulus just barks and pants happily as he walks along between you and Morgan, completely oblivious to the subject at hand.

You give a thumbs up to Nino's suggestion. You certainly would like to see Naru as a princess.

"I know, right?" Nino beams. "Maybe we can ask Princess Lucina for a spare dress or something!"

"Figured you'd pick the Squirt's side!" Naru groans. "I'd sock ya if you weren't wearing that helmet!"

You just shrug smugly. You're just glad to see everybody in high spirits today.

"Soooo, doesn't look like we're being followed or anything." Niko sighs, almost disappointed. "Guess this will just be an uneventful trip as always."

"They probably just know what they're doing." Morgan responds, her eyes carefully scanning the terrain ahead. "We didn't make any secret that we were leaving on this quest."

"I dunno, you wanna keep following the road?" Niko asks.

"Well, it's definitely the fastest way there." Naru points out the obvious.

"I mean, if we really want to force them to make a move, we'd have to go off road." Morgan suggests. "Too much open terrain here for them to risk breaking cover."

"If they know what they're doing, then they won't fall for the obvious bait." Niko replies.

"Probably, yeah." Morgan casually concedes.

You come across what looks to be a person sleeping casually on the side of the road, her back propped up against a tree, a blanket laid out under her. She was wrapped up in another blanket, and snoring rather loudly.

"What the..." Morgan frowns. "Who just sleeps outside like that?"

You tap her on the shoulder.

"Besides me." Morgan grunts.

"Some kinda bandit?" Naru narrows her eyes.

"I smell magic coming off of her." Nino tugs at your arm. "Not sure if she's a mage, but she's got ability."

"Well, there's one way to find out." Niko shrugs, casually flipping her knives.

You decide to go investigate, walking up the sleeping stranger. The rest of your party hangs back a relatively safe and respectful distance.

As you get closer, you can see scraggly, short blonde hair poking out from under the woman's hood, She then snorts and tosses in her sleep as you near her, and her eyes slowly creak open, still somehow looking sleep deprived.

"Oh, was wondering when you'd all come along." The woman yawns as she stretches. "I was afraid I wasn't gonna get any business today."

Business? You look at the woman curiously, and she looks back at you.

"Oh great, I got the one that doesn't talk. Of course Fate gives me the most troublesome ones." The woman groans, which turns into another yawn. "Name's Ais. Traveling fortune teller extraordinaire. For a few gold pieces, I can tell you of a future that may come to pass."

You just continue to stare at Ais. Fortune telling? Really?

"YOU'RE A FUCKING SCAAAAAAAAAAAAM!" You hear Naru yell from behind.

"From a cleric? Yeah, typical." Ais shrugs casually as she rubs at one of your eyes. "Well, anyways, the whims of Fate tell me I got one good fortune in me. Just two gold pieces, if you're interested."

You just look to your party. Niko and Nino nod enthusiastically. Naru shakes her head adamantly and Morgan and Romulus just seem confused about the whole matter.

You motion for Nino to come over and he happily skips up to you and Ais.

"Hmmm, one for the kid, huh? It's like I'm back at a carnival." Ais shudders but then regains herself. "All right, just need some finishing touches...

Ais reaches into her thick, bulky robes and pulls out a crystal ball. Nino's eyes widen in wonder, and you realize that inside, you could see a swirling cloud contained within. Ais gently sets the orb down on the blanket.

"Ohmygosh, where'd you get a high level art-"

"Shush." Ais says, putting a finger to her lips. "This requires a degree of silence, and I'm not exactly the talkative type."

"S-sorry!" Nino squeaks.

Ais then turns her gaze to you. Palm outstretched. You drop a single gold piece into her hand. The second you would give afterwards, if you were satisfied.

"Heh, pretty smart of you." Ais grins and turns back to Nino. "All right, just put both your hands on the crystal ball and close your eyes. You don't have to do any fancy meditating or anything but just try and stay relaxed, okay?"

"Right!" Nino nods rapidly.

"Cool." Ais shifts into a cross legged position and closes her eyes as well, mumbling words under her breath.

All the while, you see the orb begin to change colors as...something stirs within. For the briefest of moments, you catch sight of-

Ais finally opens her eyes and gives a big smile, reaching her arm out and ruffling Nino's hair.

"Heh, you've got great things in store in the future, kid." Ais chuckles. "You're gonna be belting out magic that's going to blow everyone's minds."

"Really?" Nino's face brightens.

"Yep." Ais grins. "Just one word. Crystals."

Nino pauses and then her eyes widen as if in understanding.

"Neat!" She laughs.

"All right, all right, that's enough fortune telling for today." Naru grunts as she walks over and helps Nino back up to her feet. "Just give her the gold and we can get going."

You nod and hand Ais the rest of her payment.

"Thank very much, Ashwalker." The fortune teller grins. "We'll be seeing each other again pretty soon."

You tilt your head. Was that another fortune?

"Not a fortune, just a hunch." Ais shrugs as she lays back against the tree and closes her eyes, falling asleep again.

"That lady was pretty cool!" Nino chirps as she skips happily beside you.

"Kinda a weirdo." Niko frowns. "Are all fortune tellers like that?"

"Probably just an act." Naru grumbles.

>>

You lead the party the rest of the way to the village. You had all dallied here long enough. It was only a little while longer before the village came into view. It was simply a small knot of wood cottages, with a simple wood palisade surrounding it. Good for keeping out random wildlife and small bandit groups, but grossly inadequate for anything large like an ogre.

Indeed, as you got closer, you could see several hastily repaired breaches in the perimeter fence, and the smashed ruins of several buildings.

"Thank goodness! Adventurers!"

You turn to see several of the villagers emerging from their homes and flocking over. You're a bit surprised that they were so happy, considering the should have been able to clearly see that you were a Black Templar. Then again, considering the damage their village suffered, they were probably in a situation where they would accept anybody's help.

"I suppose you're here to help us with our Ogre problem?" The Village Elder asks as he hobbles forward on a walking stick.

"That's right." Morgan nods, taking the lead. "Is there anything you can tell us about them?"

"They attack at night and raid our stores." The Elder shakes his head. "Livestock, grain, anything vaguely edible. We're lucky they haven't taken any actual people but..."

"You have no food left." Morgan frowns as she looks at the ruined buildings.

"That's right." The Elder nods. "Hopefully the Ogres will move on when there's no more food, but we're equally afraid that they'll just start eating the people instead. You must help us!"

"That's what we're getting paid for." Naru grunts.

"How big are they?" Niko wonders.

"At least three times the height of your Templar there." The Elder points to you. "And devilishly strong and intelligent."

"Hmmmm..." Morgan frowns. "If you still have any food left, we can use that to lure them to the village and ambush them..."

"You would let them ruin our homes more?" The Elder blanches.

"It's a safer alternative to having to hunt them down in the forest." Morgan explains. "If these Ogres are as smart as you say, then they'll have a better knowledge of the local land than we do."

"Still..." The Elder sighs.

You point to both Nino and Naru. They were both the most likely to slow the party down in a hunt situation, and Nino at least had enough firepower at her disposal to take on anything that would come at the village while you were away.

"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on the squirt." Naru assures you.

"Ah, please, come to our inn! We'll accommodate you free of charge!" The Elder says enthusiastically.

"Jackpot." Naru grins.

Well, at least you knew things would be fine on this front.

"All right, I think I've got their scent." Morgan says as she kneels among the wreckage of one of the attacked barns. "Looks like they're still together. Follow me."

Finally, she pauses and kneels, silently motioning for the both of you to stop.

"I see one." She whispers and points through the brush.

You and Niko creep forward, and see the ogre. The massive, cyclopean beast was indeed large, rippling with pure muscle and sharp, bony spines protruding from its back. Its single cyclopean eye swivels back and forth as it squats near a rudimentary camp fire, tearing the flesh off a cow carcass.

"Well, that's one of them." Niko frowns. "But where's the other?"

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You now have 1 point!

Morgan's first shot flies straight and true, the arrow zipping through the air and plunging itself directly into the ogre's single eye. The beast shrieks as its raises its arms instinctively to clutch its face and protect it from further attacks, which gives you the opening you need.

You charge forward and thrust the spear end of your halberd upward, piercing straight through the massive ogre's exposed neck. Dark red blood gushes from the wound like a leaking barrel, drenching your halberd. The beast then goes limp and falls over with a loud THUD.

However, you moment of triumph was cut short by a pained scream. You turn to see Niko in the clutches of the the second ogre's clenched fist. Had it been hiding all this time?

"I-I'm sorry, I screwed up!" Niko wheezes.

The ogre glares at you with its single eye. You're not sure what it's thinking, but you get the impression that it's angered at its fellow's death. Ogres did have a degree of intelligence, after all.

This was a dangerous situation. You had to find a way to get the ogre to focus its attention on you rather than Niko. Thanks to your lessons, you might have a way to taunt it, but it was risky.

Or, you could trust Morgan to take her shot. You knew it had to be tough, since Niko was in the way, but Morgan was a good shot.

Either way, time was ticking down for Niko.

Morgan fires her arrow, but instead of embedding itself into the ogre's head like intended, the ogre shifts its position at the last second and the arrow instead embeds itself into its arm. The beast roars in pain, and reflexively throws Niko at the source the attack. Niko's body flails in the air like a ragdoll before disappearing into the leaves. You're not sure if Morgan was able to evade that or if Niko avoided injury.

And you didn't have time to find out now that the ogre was focusing its gaze on you.

You heft your halberd. This was the moment you were waiting for. With Niko out of immediate danger, this left you free to go all out against the ogre. You charge the beast as it roars at you in defiance.

Unfortunately, you don't count on the ogre picking up a nearby log and using it as a makeshift club. The massive wooden shaft swings out and slams into your chestplate, splintering into a thousand pieces and sending you flying into the air, your back slamming into a tree trunk.

Sensing an advantage, the ogre charges forward, intending to flatten you against the tree trunk.

Thinking fast, you brace your halberd against the tree, spear end pointed towards the onrushing beast. At the speed it was traveling, it was doubtful it'd be able to stop in time, though whether you survived this was a different question entirely.

>FATE POINT USED
>No points remain!

And just as predicted, the ogre's momentum carries it directly into your waiting halberd, the point driving deep into the beast's gut.

The ogre roars in pain, briefly paralyzed.

And that's all Morgan needs. Out of the trees, she drops down, planting her feet on the ogre's shoulder's and driving an arrow directly into the back of its neck.

The ogre roars again and begins thrashing and flailing, yet Morgan refuses to budge as she nocks a fresh arrow, an expression of fury on her face.

You decide to let Morgan do her thing as you ready our own attack on the flailing ogre. In this uncontrolled state, it was arguably even more dangerous than ever, given its massive size.

Morgan drops another arrow into the back of the ogre's neck. This one apparently finally punched through its spine, as the ogre's body locks up and it topples over, slamming into the ground and twitching. You render the finishing blow and slamming your halberd down, crushing its massive skull in.

But Morgan continues shooting arrows into the now dead ogre, the furious, almost feral look in her eyes not going away until you finally put a hand on her shoulder to snap her back to reality.

"S-shit, I'm sorry." Morgan gasps, now suddenly out of breath. "It's just... when I saw what happened to Niko-"

"While the sentiment is nice, I'm not quite dead yet." Niko wheezes as she stumbles out of the brush, covered in cuts and bruises and cradling an ominously limp arm.

"Niko!" Morgan dashes over to hug her before catching herself.

"Ha! Nice to know ya care." Niko grins. "Still, looks like you guys got things handled."

"I'll take a look at that arm." Morgan sighs, slinging her bow with trembling hands. "How about you go see if there's any loot we can recover for the village?"

You nod and head over to the small cave the ogres were using as a hideout. You step around the corpse of the first ogre and enter the cave, but pause.

There was nothing in the cave. Picked completely clean.

You weren't sure if the ogres had simply already eaten everything, or if someone or something had already snuck in during the battle and stolen everything. Either way, it looked like you would be coming back empty handed.

Well, not exactly empty handed. You'd have two very nice ogre heads to bring along as trophies, so that was something, you guess.

Still, it was a bit concerning to see the normally reserved and controlled Morgan acting the way she was today. Was her bestial side really starting to affect her? If so, what could you do about it...?

>And that's all for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! And don't forget Macross on Friday!
>>
>>2248065
Obviously we need to get her to pray more so that she can control herself.
>>
>>2248065
See you next week, boss!
