You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Things between you, Dorothea, and Amy barely had a chance to cool down before duty reared its ugly head again. You barely finished breakfast with Amy before you found yourself back in the briefing room, this time with just Lara, Dorothea, and Kellerman.

"I thought the battle was already over?" You ask curiously as you take a seat.

"Just because the battle's over doesn't mean the job's done." Kellerman grunts. "There's still work to be done."

"What Kellerman means," Dorothea coughs as she interjects, "is that there's still a matter that requires your attention."

The holomap then winks on, showing a very familiar nebula gas cloud.

"As you may remember, we had forces inside the nebula harassing Zentradi forces attempting to reinforce the front." Dorothea explains. "Most of them have been accounted for, but unfortunately, Julie's status remains unknown."

You pause at that. Julie was that allied Zentradi pilot, right?

"Unfortunately, we cannot keep the fleet here just to search for a single pilot." Dorothea continues. "And since your unit has no current missions or activities, and its size is small to begin with, we have concluded you would be the best for this mission."

"Really?" Lara groans.

"I'm confident you can at least put your personal feelings aside, Lieutenant Williams." Dorothea narrows her eyes a bit at your wingmate.

"You got nothing to worry about." Lara sighs.

"But I don't even have a Valkyrie right now." You point out.

"True." Dorothea nods.

"Good thing we've got a spare you can use." Kellerman nods. "It's not a VF-19, but it's a specialized unit that's suited for search and rescue."

"Which is...?" You frown.

"An RVF-25." Kellerman states simply.

That was... a recon bird, if you remembered the designation correctly.

"I guess that will work." You sigh. "Gotta take what I can get."

"That's the spirit." Kellerman grins. "Don't worry, we'll get a replacement ready by the time you link back up with the fleet."

"So it's just us two?" You ask. "I mean, I've handled a VF-25 before, but I'm not too familiar with the RVF-25's systems..."

"I have a specialist available that can assist in that." Dorothea says. "She'll meet you in the hangar. She's already been briefed on the mission details."

"Roger that." You nod.

"Heh, guess it'll be me doing the heavy lifting this time, huh, Cap?" Lara chuckles.

"There's also one more matter..." Dorothea continues.

"Admiral, I'm still not on board with that idea." Kellerman frowns.

"Neither am I, but it must still be mentioned." Dorothea sighs and turns her gaze back to you. "Karla has... 'suggested' that Amy tag along as a support specialist. Of course, she'd be riding in Lara's Valkyrie purely in an observational role. She feels that it's a good way for her to gain some field experience, but I personally think it puts her in unnecessary danger."

"You're free to say no. We'll cover for you either way." Kellerman adds.

"Amy does need to see what it's like in the cockpit." You nod. "Don't worry, we'll keep her safe."

"Of course." Dorothea nods. "Well, that's it. Enter the nebula and perform a search as best you can. Just be warned, we're not sure if there are any Zentradi stragglers still occupying the nebula, so be careful."

"We will." You assure her.

"Good, then you're both dismissed." Dorothea nods. "Please launch as soon as you can."

"Got it." You salute.

"All right, let's get this over with, huh?" Lara says as she gets up from her seat. Odd, she was always looking forward to missions.

"All right, Lara, how about you go grab Amy. I'm gonna check out my rental bird." You tell her.

"Sure thing, Cap." Lara nods and splits off from you.

You meanwhile make your way down to the hangar. Your RVF-25 is easy enough to spot, as it's one of the few Valkyries with the large, signature radome mounted on top of it.

"C-Captain Neumann?"

You turn to see a rather small looking woman, wearing the standard flight suit. Crowning her short red hair was an almost comically oversized set of headphones. She definitely didn't look to be pilot grade to you, though, judging from her manner of speaking and body language.

"U-uh, I'm Anna!" She says, bowing her head to you. "We're supposed to be partners on this mission, right, Captain?"

Well, she seemed a bit high strung, but earnest enough.

"You can just call me Harry." You grin.

"Really?" Anna blinks in surprise. "That's so informal though..."

"Don't worry about it, I don't mind." You nod. "Besides, I kinda prefer it if people call me by name instead of rank."

"Okay! Got it!" Anna nods, her spirits rising. "S-so we're going to searching for Julie, right?"

"That's right." You nod and then pause. "Wait, I don't remember seeing you in the flight lines. Just what exactly do you do?"

"Er, well." Anna pauses. "I'm actually part of the bridge crew. My specialty is sensors and communications so Dorothea thought I'd be perfect for this mission..."

Then it strikes her why her name struck you as familiar. She was part of Dorothea's bridge crew on the Dorsetshire, if you remembered correctly. Looks like she followed her over here?

"All right, so how about we start getting the systems on this thing warmed up?" You suggest.

"Of course!" Anna nods quickly, apparently glad the subject has moved on to something she's familiar with. "B-but, do you think you can help me with the cockpit...?"

Jeez, she was even more helpless than Amy, if that was somehow possible. With an amused sigh, you casually help lift Anna up the boarding ladder so she can clamber into the sensor officer seat in the back.

"R-right, I'll check all the sensor systems and you can handle the rest!" Anna says as her hands start typing away at the console in rapid succession.

"Gotcha." You nod as you drop down into the pilot's seat and start going through the startup checklist. Seemed like everything was in order.

"Hey! Heeeeeey!"

You pause your startup procedures to see two more redheaded women standing below the Valkyrie. One had a very cross, suspicious look on her face, while the other seemed to be rather indifferent to the situation, her face glued to her holopad.

"Yer that pilot Dorothea keeps talkin' about so much, right?" The lead one grunts.

"Yeah." You confirm. "And?"

"We were just comin' down to see if you were takin' care of Anna right!" The apparent leader huffs.

If Anna tagged along with Dorothea, then you could only assume these two were Rachel and Lida, the other members of Dorothea's old bridge crew. Pretty loyal bunch, you suppose.

"R-Red! Lida! You didn't have to come!" Anna whines.

"But you're always bad with strangers." Lida says simply, not even raising her head from her screen. "We're just looking out for you."

"Yeah!" Rachel frowns at you. "Heard ya got a thing for redheads so we want to make sure you ain't got any funny ideas!"

"Dunno." You grin as you lean your head further out of your cockpit, staring face to face with Rachel. "From the looks of it, it's Dorothea who's got a thing for redheads."

"Why you-" Rachel fumes. "Don't you dare talk about Dorothea like that-"

"He might have a point." Lida shrugs.

"Don't you dare join HIS side!" Rachel yelps.

"W-well, it's certainly plausible..." Anna squeaks.

"W-what?!" Red blanches. "Of course not! That's just dumb-"

"Well, you always are complaining how none of the pilots seem to be paying attention to you." Lida points out.

"Mhm! Don't worry, you'll succeed eventually!" Anna adds innocently.

"Jeez, you two are seriously the WORST!" Rachel whines, now put on the defensive.

"Oh, hey, what you all doing here?" Lara asks as she waltzes in, Amy in tow.

"Oh great, it's the bridge bunnies." Amy rolls her eyes. "Where's the Admiral? Then you'd all make a complete set."

"Yeah yeah, just keep mouthin' off, kid." Rachel fumes, still in a less than stellar mood.

"Aw sweet! So Anna's gonna be our sensor op?" Lara beams, apparently completely unaware of the barbs Rachel and Amy were trading. "Neat! This mission's in the bag, then!"

"Well, guess you'll just have to figure it out for yourself!" You grin as you dip back into the cockpit. "All right, Lara, let's get going!"

"Sure thing, Cap!" Lara salutes you and gives the others a sly wink.

Amy just rolls her eyes and follows Amy to her VF-19. Rachel and Lida are just to watch curiously.

"Well, I guess you and Lara do m-make sense." Anna mutters from behind. "I mean, you two are wingmates after all, but I would've that you and Dorothea-"

"Anna, focus on the mission for now." You remind her.

"Of course!" Anna squeaks. "S-so sensors are all green! We should be able to pierce the interference in the nebula!"

"Good to know." You nod as you review your weapons loadout.

Let's see, you still have cannons, which was a good thing. However, your missile load was cut down by at least half, due to the extra space and weight the RVF-25's sensors required.

"Hey, what are these attached to our wing hardpoints?" You ask Anna.

"O-oh! Portable Ghost drones that are slaved to this Valkyrie's control systems!" Anna explains. "They can act autonomously or I can control them manually from my station here!"

"Sounds good." You nod. "You ready?"

"I-I think so!" Anna nods nervously.

"Okay, hold on tight, and keep your back pressed against the seat." You caution as you wave at the tech that you're ready to launch.

Your Valkyrie lurches forward, a sensation that you've already been numbed to, but Anna squeaks loudly at the sudden and jolting movement. Soon enough, things stabilize, and the Valkyrie levels out.

"Lara, how are you doing?" You ask your wingmate over the comms.

"Right behind ya, Cap! And our star is just fine, too!"

"Just dandy." Amy says simply.

"And you?" You ask Anna.

"A-alive." She sighs. "You do that every day?"

"Pretty much." You nod.

"Anyways, w-we're coming up to the nebula." Anna reminds you. "Once we get inside, we can use our heavy duty sensors to start searching for Julie, but it may give away our position any Zentradi in the area..."

"Are there any alternatives?" You frown.

"We can release the drones and put them on a search pattern." Anna suggests. "But they'll be limited to visuals only and we'd have to stay fairly close to them to keep the control signal strong., and they won't be in a position to defend us if something goes wrong..."

So is this quest taking place concurrently with Delta, timeline-wise? Or sometime before or after?

Has rock and roll truly fallen to the wayside in favor of pop idols? If so, that kinda sucks, since it'd be a neat departure to try and go the Nekki Basara route and be a rock band with their own Valks.

"O-okay! I got contacts on the sensors!" Anna announces. "A-and, uh oh..."

"What's going on, Anna?" You ask.

"I-I'm sending the data over to your screen now!" She responds quickly.

Your HUD then lights up with a sensor map showing all nearby contacts. A lot of it was automatically categorized as space debris, but you could immediately tell there were some contacts still moving under their own power.

"So what am I looking at, here?" You ask.

"W-well, there seems to be one hotspot of activity right here." Anna says as the section in question is highlighted on your HUD. "From the looks of it, there's a Zentradi destroyer near this debris field, with smaller Zentradi craft forming a perimeter. Almost like a-"

"-search pattern." You conclude. "So maybe that's where Julie is?"

"Or it could be a salvage operation of some kind." Anna warns. "I-I'm not picking up any NUNS signals."

"Of course. If she was being tracked she'd hide in the debris and go dark. It's SOP." Lara adds.

"So, what do we do?" Amy asks.

Mm. Makes sense.

Still, as much as I like my Mecha pilot quests, it's rare that we break the mold in what kinds of pilots that /qst/ plays, in that we're generally "Operator as fuck".

Like I said before, I'd definitely dig a chance to go full FIYAH BOMBA, with a whole fucking band in Valks of their own. Blast some Guilty Gear or similar stuff and have an entire fucking galaxy rock out to our sound. Show folks that pop idols aren't the only way to go.

"I think our best option is to stage a diversion and open a hole up in that net." You conclude.

"So who's gonna be the bait?" Lara asks.

"Hopefully not us." Anna squeaks.

You go over your options. Your RVF-25 had ECW capability, which should help in a degraded situation like the middle of this nebula, and make it easier to sneak up and disengage, but it wasn't exactly that much of a dogfighter. Lara could easily do it too, but she was carrying Amy and it would be an issue if anything happened to her. Finally, you had your Ghost drones, though you'd be losing a big chunk of your self defense capability...

"Anna, fire up the Ghosts. We'll use them as a distraction." You instruct her.

"O-okay, got it!" Anna nods as she taps away at her console.

You feel your Valkryie rumble a bit as the four ghost drones detach from your wing hardpoints. They hover there for a brief second before boosting away at rapid speed.

"Concentrate on the fighters." You instruct Anna. "Let's open up a hole in that net."

"Roger!" Anna nods as she taps away at her console, relaying the necessary commands.

And just like that, the Ghosts dart forward, moving in unpredictable zigzag patterns at speeds and velocities that no human could ever match. Seeing these things in action, always reminded you why NUNS always kept such tight controls over their autonomous programming.

And just like that, the Ghosts began ripping through the picket line of Regulds and battlesuits, their onboard cannons tearing apart the Zentradi craft like paper. The Zentradi were initially slow to respond due to surprise, but they quickly rally and proceed to chase the Ghosts, which as planned, break off to draw them away.

All right, now was your chance to get in and find Julie.

"Lara, stick close to me, we're going in!" You bark.

"Got it! Ready to go full burn!" Lara acknowledges. "Strap in, Amy!"

"Not again-" Amy doesn't even have a chance to groan as both you and Lara go full throttle.

"Julie, Julie! Do you read me!?" Anna calls out on the comms. "If you can hear me, please answer!"

"Jeez, took you guys long enough." You hear Julie wheeze.

She... she didn't sound too good.

"Are you hurt?" You ask, suddenly concerned.

"Nothing too bad. My suit just got hit, that's all." Julie mumbles. "That Red Suit is a sneaky bitch..."

That gives you pause for a second. Was she referring to that Zentradi Ace that nearly got you? You quickly shake it off, though. You couldn't afford to hesitate.

"I got a lock on her position!" Anna breathes a sigh of relief.

"Heading there now." You say as you bank your Valkyrie to follow the new nav point.

Lara's Valkyrie hangs off just behind you, looking for any incoming threats.

That's when you see a blue Meltrandi battlesuit emerge from a wrecked Zentradi cruiser. Julie wasn't kidding when she said she got hit. The armor was punctured and shredded, but thankfully most of the damage seemed to be limited to the outer layers.

"Are you mobile?" You ask.

"Thrusters are shot, otherwise I would've made a run for it earlier." Julie coughs. "Suit's still intact, though, so I can punch out if you need me to."

"We're going to have to carry her out either way..." Amy mumbles.

"All right, I got you." You say as you switch your RVF-25 to GERWALK mode and grab on to Julie's damaged battlesuit. "Better brace yourself."

"Hah, I've been handled rougher." Julie tries to laugh but coughs instead.

"Oh no, oh no no no..." Anna whimpers.

"Give me a sitrep, Anna!" You bark. "If something's wrong you gotta tell me what it is!"

"Single contact incoming fast!" Anna warns. "It's heading straight towards us!"

You had a feeling you knew who it was. Fortunately, just like Anna said, it was only that single contact. Looked like the other Zentradi were too far out of position to provide any assistance.

That's when you hear Amy singing, though unlike those bubbly pop songs she had been singing before, this one seemed much harder... more intense. It was like shew as actively just shouting at her opponent rather than just singing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s43yLMgXXOU

"Enter the night
A flash in the darkness
White Death is heading your way
The fear of his foes, a hero at home
Hundreds will fall by his gun

You are in the sniper's sight
The first kill tonight
Time to die!
You are in the bullet's way
The White Death's prey
Say goodbye!"

"The contact's stopped moving!" Anna says in surprise. "J-just a complete stop!"

"That's our cue then." You nod. "Lara form back up with us, we're out of here."

"But-" Lara begins to protest.

"We're here to rescue, not fight. We've got Julie now so we're getting out of here." You stay sternly.

"Yes, Cap." Lara sighs.

"Aw shit, I can't believe that actually worked!" Amy sighs in relief.

"Amy, where in the world did you learn a song like that?" You ask, genuinely curious.

"You think I grew up liking that jpop shit?" Amy grunts. "It was just sort the first thing that came to my mind."

"I kinda like it." Julie adds.

"Heh, thanks." Amy chuckles. "Karla doesn't think it'd 'appeal to a mass audience', though. What a load of bullshit."

Well, either way, it did seem to have a significant effect on that Zentradi Ace, stopping her in her tracks like a brick wall.

As your flight finally exited the nebula, you began to think. Maybe this situation wasn't as hopeless as Dorothea feared.
