The choice to stay and fight or to take what you can and run clashes in your mind as you and Sierra stand in your workshop.

Outside, a group of people, most of them likely vampires, are outside your shop decrying that you are guilty of heinous crimes against the City of Shirahoro and it's people.

You're about to open your mouth and tell the elf to grab a few papers and run for it when a crash from the front interrupts you. Sliding up to the door leading into the storefront, you note three thralls slowly stalking inside, clearing the way for the lieutenant that leads them.

They haven't seen you yet, but that will likely change in seconds. You grip the pistol in your hands a bit tighter, the urge to fight conflicting with the weariness in your bones.

Now what?

Relaxing the grip on your pistol, you take a moment to collect yourself. In that moment, you motion for Sierra to start grabbing your blueprints.

You need to buy time, both for Sierra to grab what she can and for Goo Hwi to catch up with you both.

So taking one last deep breath, you open your mouth and do just that, "It's a bit rude to break into my shop, you know? Glass isn't cheap, and if you don't start explaining what you're doing here I'm going to have to get a lot of blood out of my nice wooden floor".

Silence follows your words, the thralls letting out a guttural growl and shifting as if they're about to attack. You're halfway towards raising your pistol when they suddenly stop and step back, parting before the lieutenant as he walks into the store.

You recognize him as the vamp who left the area when you and Dutch were scouting before the strike, though he's definitely lost the lady on his arm and is instead carrying a spear in one hand.

"As previously stated, you're under arrest for cri-"

"Save me the lies, vampire," You cut him off before he can get going, and you see him pause a fraction as you do, "I'm no fool; keep the act for another chump".

The lieutenant doesn't move, looking over to where you're peaking around the corner with a pair of pitch-black eyes. Strange, since you could have sworn they all had red eyes...

"If you're not going to say anything, then I'll ask you a question," Readjusting your hands as they grasp your pistol, you glance over to where Sierra is dumping your blueprints, including the ones for the golem, into your bag.

Looking back towards the group, you say...

"You've got a friend, who's currently recovering from getting gutted, who has a rather unhealthy obsession with me. Why's that?"

The vampire just stands there for a moment, apparently thinking on it, before he comes to a realization, "Oh, you mean Rachel. I wasn't involved in that, so I wouldn't actually know. Although, if you're the guy who did her in like that..."

"Whatever," Looking over, you see Sierra throw your bag over your shoulder and give you a thumbs up, "I know you've got designs for Shirahoro; what are they anyways? Make a good sale pitch and I might even consider helping you all out..."

The elf looks shocked at your words, though she calms when you give her a wink.

Whatever response the vamp has is cut off as something slams into the back door. Sierra jumps back and you're about to suggest it is time to leave when you hear the distant noise of gunfire suddenly starts up.

"This city is having a change of management," The vampire speaks up, the sound of him beginning to walk across the room echoing in your ears, "If you're serious about joining us..."

Sierra looks at you, then glances over at the doorway to the shop.

The time is now to make a choice.

"...Yeah, sorry, going to have to decline. It's been fun having Rachel trying and failing to kill me repeatedly, but I think I like management just the way it is".

Not waiting a second for a response, you turn around the corner and open fire. Your first three rounds hit the lieutenant right in the chest, stumbling him for a moment as you switch to the thralls flanking him. Two of the undead monsters fall apart as you empty the pistol into them, their corpses falling to your shop's floor missing most of their upper bodies.

The vampire lets out a growl, his spear swinging up and getting ready to attack you as the surviving thrall follows suit.

Clicking a fresh magazine into your pistol, you have a split second to decide what to do next.

Gritting your teeth, you swing back around and end the last thrall's miserable existence before firing into the lieutenant again.

His armor takes most of the impact, but you see blood spray from where you managed to get shots between the protection.

The vampire also grits his teeth, a flick of his wrist sending you sprawling as the wall you were hiding behind suddenly gains a new decorative spear through it.

Reloading once again, and internally wincing at the fact that you're down to three magazines, you're about to tell Sierra to retreat when the door behind her breaks down, a thrall immediately swiping for her.

She manages to duck the attack, bringing her hand around and wrapping it as best she can against the thing's neck. There's a small crackle and a sudden burst of blood as Sierra pulls her now smoking hand away, the smell of ozone and burnt flesh filling the air.

A quick glance in one direction show the lieutenant getting ready to pull his spear free and give you another jab, with several more thralls coming in from the front to back him up. On the back side, you again see more thralls coming to box you in.

The elf looks at you, a small hint of panic across her face.

"Burn through 'em," Motioning towards the back door, you see Sierra hesitate for a moment, clearly not wanting to destroy your shop any more than it already has been. That moment passes as the next thrall comes around the door, the elf narrowing her eyes as she raises two fire-wrapped hands up.

You don't see what happens next, as you turn around the corner one more to suppress the lieutenant, but you can feel the sheer heat her magic gives off.

Which, unfortunately for you, causes you to flinch for the barest of seconds.

Your snap shot misses, the vamp yanking around his spear and only your reflexes keep the wound to a scrape across your shoulder as apposed to through your chest.

Both of you growl in irritation, the spear-user dropping his weapon altogether so he can tackle you to the ground.

He immediately goes for a bite, which you interrupt by shoving your pistol into a gap between his armor and pulling the trigger as fast as you can. You only manage to get a few shots off when the vamp yanks the weapon out of your grip and tosses it behind him. That, in turn, gives you the time to get your foot up and kick him off you. It's a particularly good hit, but you still manage to knock him back into the nearby wall.

Stumbling to your feet, the two of you stare each other down. You're both unarmed, though you know that he's still got his fangs and claws. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Sierra finish off the last thrall on her end and is about to turn back to you. While you can't see them currently, you know there's more thralls coming to help their lieutenant right now.

"It's been fun," You start, subtly going for where your broadsword should be at your side only to realize that it fell out at some point during the fight. You're going to have to do this the hard way then, "Tell Rachel I said 'hello'".

That's all the warning you give him as you charge forward, his supernatural speed kicking in and allowing him to duck your first punch.

You jump back when his claws extend and he starts swiping. Unfortunately, the cramped quarters of your workshop only work in his favor and you're suddenly reminding of more than one knife fight back in Airgrid as you've got more than one wound down your arms.

The vamp definitely knows it has the advantage, taking a deep breath with a twisted smile on his face.

You don't see what his face look like as Sierra shocks him, but you can tell he's not going to be down for long.. The elf knows it too, as she grabs your arm and the two of you rush out the back.

The sound of gunfire still fills the air of the city, and while you don't immediately see any vampires you seriously doubt that'll last.

"We need to check on Goo Hwi," You can't help the slight wince, both at the wounds along your arms and at the fact that your shop is being overrun by vampires, that crosses your face, but you force yourself to keep going. Sierra looks at you with concern and hands you a roll of bandages she had the foresight to grab before you left. You wrap your arms as best you can, something you have a bit of practice doing with one hand, while she looks over your shoulder. By the time you're done, the elf gives you a hard look, "I know I know, don't push yourself anymore. But from the sounds of things," A fresh staccato of gunfire reinforces your point at this point in time, "The vamps are serious about this coup; we're going to need everyone we've got to stay safe".

"Alright, just..." Sierra sighs, evidently not liking the situation at hand, "If there's a fight, let me handle it. I've got plenty of mana and you're unarmed".

You just nod at her words, turning to give your shop one last regretful glance as you leave it to its fate.

Moving through the empty streets, its rather obvious that neither you nor Sierra are taking the... changes... the Earth District has taken. You imagine the residents are hunkered down in their homes, as the ones you pass have clearly been barred as best as the owners can.

Other than that, the trip is uneventful until you see Goo Hwi himself fly out of a side street onto the main road you were about to dark across. The old man is practically covered in blood, most of it not his own you can tell, and is breathing a bit hard.

The reasons for both of these conditions become immediately evident as at least a dozen thralls pour out of the side street, being led by a vampire lieutenant who, from the heavy bracers she's wearing, is also a martial artist.

Sierra glances at you from the corner of her eye, clearly deciding between running to Goo Hwi's aid and fighting the group off, or risking an escape.

Your back chooses that exact moment to act up, the first drops of rain hitting your skin seconds later. The burning sensation sets your teeth on edge and your magic thrums in your veins, just begging to be released.

"We'll hit them as hard as we can, then run for it," Your voice is even, despite the fact that your body is practically baying for blood, "I'll help the old man with the lieutenant, can you torch all the thralls?"

"I can," Sierra look at you nervously, clearly not comfortable with your magic still, but nods non the less, "But, even with all this, I'm probably going to get kicked out of the city for using fire magic in it, you know that right?"

You frown at her words, not liking the thought of that happening, "Worst comes to worst, I'll owe Sun a massive favor. For now, just focus on keeping collateral damage to a minimum".

With that, you take off down the street in a dead sprint. Up ahead, Goo Hwi blocks a vicious kick that would have hit his head, retaliating with an uppercut that the lady vamp nimbly dodges.

Your magically enhanced run is interrupted as you're almost thrown off your feet as Sierra's magic flares and all twelve thralls are simply engulfed in flame.

Recovering quickly enough, you sadly have already lost the element of surprise as the lieutenant is able to avoid your attempted knock out punch. Unfortunately for her, she now has both you and the old man to take care of and, despite the fact that you're no where near his level, you make sure your attacks come from the side.

Out flanked and out numbered, the lieutenant desperately lunges for Goo Hwi in an attempt to bite him, only for the old man to punch through her chest before hitting her with the hardest left hook you've ever seen.

The vamp falls to the ground, her chest pulped and her head unrecognizable from the attack.

Letting out a ragged breath, you look over to the other side of the street to where there's barely ashes left of the thralls. Gods damn can Sierra cast spells...

"John," Goo Hwi speaks up, nodding to you with a tired smile, "Good to see you alive. Not that I mind the assistance, but Sierra's message said that you were at your shop".

"It was overrun," Motioning for him to walk with you, the two of you approach where the elf is jogging over to you, "Sierra and I got what we could before we had to leave, but it wasn't much; mostly my designs and the like, but I wasn't able to bring along any weapons or gear".

"That's unfortunate, but you lived and that is what is important. Now, where are we going from here?"

Your response?

"How was the Inn when you left it, Goo Hwi?" Thinking about your options, the place is close enough that you can stop by, "I want to head over to the Bastion and make sure Sun and the guard are holding their own, but we should stop by if we can".

"Gang Ryong is holding the building without an issue, but a lot of people who weren't able to get back to their homes when the fighting started and those who were injured are taking shelter there," The old man strokes his chin while he leads you and Sierra back towards the Inn.

"It is safe, right?" The elf speaks up after a few moments of silence.

Goo Hwi nods, "For now it is. The inn staff were trying to keep everyone as calm as possible when I left, so hopefully things are still peaceful when we arrive".

The next several minutes are tense, as the three of you are all on edge about the prospect of getting ambushed while navigating the streets.

Thankfully, that fear is mostly unfounded as you make it to the Dragon's Lair Inn without a problem. The building is still intact, if a bit damaged on the outside, which is good; the reason for its current status rather evident as Gang Ryong patrols around the perimeter.

You're a bit impressed with the sheer amount of thralls that litter the area around the Inn, their bodies display brutal yet precise blows that took them out.

"Goo Hwi, you're back," The young man says as he looks the old man, then you and Sierra, over. His voice and face are set in a firmly neutral expression, though you don't really sense any malice directed towards you, "John, Sierra, good to see both of you".

You want to trade some small talk with the young man, but he immediately walks off without another word so you continue inside.

The restaurant area has been transformed into a triage area, with Yerin and Chohyang assisting where they can. The old man must have been helping them earlier, as he quickly heads over to rejoin them, leaving you and Sierra to decide what to do next.

Guiding yourself and Sierra over to a quiet corner, you politely whisper for the elf to get a message out to Sun and Dutch, to let them know you're alright, and to tell Sun specifically that he should expect you to make it to the Main Bastion within the next thirty or so minutes.

She just tiredly nods, trying to make herself as comfortable as she can manage before slipping unconscious. You give her a tight hug before she does, though you regretfully have to pull away. As much as you'd enjoy snuggling up to the elf for the next several minutes, you still have work to do.

With that, you walk over to where a lightly wounded guard is ordering around a few of his men, alternating between having them watch the perimeter and help the ladies with treating the wounded.

The guard Sargent turns to look you over as you approach, clearly eyeing the bloody bandages that wrap around your arms, "Another one, huh? Well, you're still on your feet and you ain't swayin' so head over there," He motions towards a group of survivors sitting around, looking bored, "If you start to feel worse, let us know. For now, we need to deal with the ones with worse wounds first".

"I'm not here for treatment... sir," You trail off a bit, unsure how exactly to phrase your question.

"Then wha-" The Sargent pauses for a moment, looking at your face intently, "Have I seen you around, kid?"

"Probably; I've been working at the Main Bastion for a while now as an independent contractor," Shrugging at his slightly confused face, you just motion towards the Fire District, "Councilor Sun is my boss, kind of".

"Oh," He steps back a hair, a neutral expression crossing his face, "Never interacted much with the man, but he could be worse; especially for a paper pusher".

You try not to frown at the comment, though from the body language of the guard, you can tell he wants to wrap this up quickly.

"Look kid, that's cool and all, but I do have to be getting back to work," He looks over towards where the next patient is being prepped.

If you want to ask him something, now's the chance. (Choose one)

"Do you know any discrete roads through the Fire District?" It takes you a few seconds to settle on a question, but you decide that a safe passage there is the most important of them, "Or at least one that'll get me to the Main Bastion without an issue".

"Why would you... Ah, whatever. I'll let you know, just tell the boys over there that we're holding here until the danger passes".

With that, the Sargent describes a few back alleys and hidden short cuts that run within the Fire District. Given how reluctant he sounds giving you this information, you figure these a probably the routes the guards take when they want to goof off. With a thanks, and a promise to keep your mouth shut, you leave the guard and head back over to Sierra.

You end up sitting down next to the napping elf and wait for her to finish sending the messages for a few minutes.

Eventually, Sierra comes to with a start, blinking wearily at you as she sits upright from where she was leaning against your shoulder.

"No problems?" Helping her to her feet, you quietly ask as you pull your bag around your shoulders.

"None," Is her equally quiet response.

Glancing over, you note that Goo Hwi has managed to get most of the blood on his hands and arms off and is helping out Yerin as she compresses a particularly nasty wound.

You'd like to bring the old man along with you, he'll be extremely helpful if you run into trouble, but if the Inn gets attacked while you're away he'll be helpful here too...

No, if something occurs the people here will need Goo Hwi here beat the shit out of those undead freaks.

With that decided, you turn back to Sierra and are about to ask her if she's ready to go when you feel a slight pang of guilt hit you in the gut. You've never seen the elf push herself to her limit, but from what you can see she is swiftly approaching that; her green eyes are dark and dull, clearly showing off her fatigue better than anything else.

You're about to open your mouth to recommend that she stay here and rest when a small spark surges back into her eyes.

Actually, it was really more her hand, as she gives you a light poke that stings enough to get the point across, "Oh no, John, I know that look. You're unarmed and slightly injured; I'm not going to sit around here and wait to see if you'll be coming back alive".

With a bit of a sigh, you decide to drop things there, instead motioning her to follow you as you walk outside, "Be honest with me, Sierra, how much more can you do until you're at your limit?"

"If it's a sustained flame or a large fireball like what I've done previously, two more spells like that at the most. If its something small like a fire bolt I can cast a lot more of those," The elf shrugs, the two of you nodding to Goo Hwi as you pass the young man by, "I've been doing some training while I could since we got here, and its definitely paid off, but we're both going to need to rest at some point".

"Yeah, we will. The good news is that I got a route to the Main Bastion that should be relatively safe," Despite the fact that they're your own words, the distant gun shots going off in the distance, from both the Bastion and the Genovese HQ, don't exactly make you feel very reassured.

Slipping into the first alley you find, you and Sierra begin making your way to the Fire District as best you can.

Both of you make it through the back alleys of the Earth District without an issue; its when you get into the Fire District that you start getting worried.

Even on the route the Sargent gave you, its rather obvious to your eyes that there's been some serious fighting in the streets here. As you expected, there are numerous thrall corpses lying about but, unfortunately, there are also corpses of Daimyo guards scattered about with them.

It's unfortunate, but to be expected with a situation like this; with how hard these guys apparently got hit you're not surprised to that some of Sun's men bit it.

"Wait..." You weren't going to say something, but then something catches your eye that makes you stop, "Look over at this Sierra".

The elf walks over to where you're kneeling over one of the guards. She doesn't say anything as you look over the body, but definitely catches on to what you've noticed when you roll him over to the unveil the remains of a long sword that was buried into his gut. Following the direction of the sword, you both look over to see another guard who was clearly the owner of the sword.

"This was either friendly fire or... something else," Just to be sure, you look over the guard at your feet for any signs of bite marks; if he was bitten and the other guard thought he would turn you could understand why he would kill him, but you find no signs of anything of the sort, "Nevermind, let's go".

Sierra doesn't saying anything, just nodding at you. She doesn't comment when you snatch a slightly beaten up broadsword off the ground; right now your sense of pragmatism is outweighing your respect for the dead.

Worst comes to worst, you'll end up apologizing to the guy tonight anyways.

Several more minutes of walking in the disturbing quiet, only broken up by distant howling and gunfire, are passed, both of you a bit surprised at the lack of resistance you're facing back in these alleys.

That is rather simply explained when you get into view of the Main Bastion.

[1/2]
>>
>>2250372

If you thought there were bodies before, the large, open street outside the Main Bastion is positively littered with them. Its not like they're just laying there either, as several guardsmen are attempting to move them out of the way while the rest are nervously manning three separate barricades that block off the main access ways to the armored building.

You're honestly relieved the place is still intact, considering how this night went it could be far, far worse. Looking around, you note the same curious mix of bodies on the ground; mostly thralls with a few guards here and there. The reason for the ones that have survived this long is rather easy to spot as even in the dark night, or perhaps because of that, the silvered edges of their weapons glitter slightly in the darkness.

Taking a deep breath, you turn back to Sierra to figure out how you're going to approach the very twitchy guards blocking your way when a black robed figure practically materializes next to her.

Instincts take hold and in an instant you've got the damaged broadsword heading for this thing's throat right after you interpose yourself between it and Sierra.

It also takes you that instant to realize that this guy is wearing a very colorful animal mask, which makes you pause as that is definitely not something you've seen vamps wear previously.

"Sun's expecting you two," The man, who after a few second of neither of you making the slightest attempt to relax pulls up his mask to reveal a rather average looking Eastern man underneath it, says as he raises his hands to reveal that he's not carrying a weapon. At least currently...

Glancing over at the elf, you see her lower her hand slightly, so you decide to pull your sword back. You note, with a bit of pride, that Sierra's still got her hands clear enough to cast immediately.

"Well, let's not keep the boss waiting then," Lowering your broadsword more, you motion with it towards the barricades.

The man nods, "Follow me".

The next few minutes are a bit of a confusing blur, as the masked man calmly approaches the barricade without an issue as you and Sierra nervously follow him. From there, you're taken into the Main Bastion proper which you note, with no small amount of relief, appears to not have been breached in the first place.

"Hwang-sama is waiting for you in here," With a slight incline of his head, the masked man motions towards Sun's office before walking, apparently having something better to do.

With no other option at this point, you reach out and pull open the door.

[3/3]

Inside you find Sun, apparently uninjured thank fuck, pouring over a collection of papers.

His work swiftly ends when he looks up at you and his eyes visibly widen, "John. Sierra. I don't believe I can explain how glad I am to have you two here".

"It's good to see you unhurt, Sun," Walking fully into the room, you pull out the single chair for Sierra to sit in, "It's hell out there; I'm glad to know you didn't get caught in it".

"Like you were?" The Councilor motions towards your arms and shoulders, "I have to say I wasn't expecting the two of you to make the journey here; what happened to your shop?"

You involuntarily grimace, a frown creasing your features, "Vamps overran it right after the attacks started; single lieutenant and a bunch of thralls were waiting for me when we got back. I did manage to get the lieutenant to talk to me, however".

"Really?" Sun's tone is level, though you know his lack of usual friendliness is just due to the situation at hand rather than directed towards you, "It say anything in particular?"

"It said this was a coup, and that they were going after the management of the city in hopes of replacing them," Leaning forwards, you take a quick glance over Sun's desk and note a few maps of the city laying out, "That's why we decided to head here first; wanted to make sure you were still alive and all that. But is it true Sun, are they really attempting a coup?"

The man across from you also frowns, sighing slightly, "Its true, they are in fact attempting a coup. I know of two Councilors that have defected and have gone to ground to hide from my eyes and ears. There were also several groups of guards who defected, but for the most part they were taken out in the last hour or so".

Neither you nor Sierra really know what to say in response; all things considered the two of you are well out of your depth here.

Sun's clearly trying to collect his thoughts, looking over his paperwork and rubbing his brow.

Your response?

There's a lot of ground to cover here, as you have no real idea what is going on in the greater situation, though perhaps you should start with something that Sun probably doesn't know.

"There's an Inn over in the Earth District, called the Dragon's Lair, that has a few of your guards, Goo Hwi, and another guy who can do some serious damage there currently. We stopped by there briefly and from the looks of things they're mostly working on patching up anyone who got caught in the attacks and weren't able to make it to safety," Sun doesn't exactly look up at your, but from the way he pauses and pulls out another map you know he's listening to you intently, "Not sure if it helps or not, but the guards there wanted me to let you know".

"I see," The Councilor taps the map, you recognize the layout as the general area around said inn, "I'll be sure to let my men know if we ever push out".

Silence retakes the room with that, as Sun goes back into his thoughts.

It's your concern for him that you ask your next question, "Sun, is your family safe?"

That catches his attention, "Yes they are. We were at my homestead when the attacks began and that is where they still are. I left most of my guard and Yeo there to protect them and the compound when I came here to aid in organizing the Daimyo".

"That's good, Sun," You do feel a bit relieved at the news that Jun is alright, "Do you know what the general situation is right? Have we heard anything from the Genovese? We could hear the gunfire on the way over here".

"The situation is steady, if worrying," Looking up at you, Sun motions around the room, "We've managed to hold the Bastion, for now, and the last message we received from the Walls stated that they were on alert".

You raise an eyebrow at his words, "The Walls?"

"Yes," Nodding, the Councilor looks over at a hand written note, "Part of the issue that we're having for manpower is that we have most of our best guards manning the Walls. And we cannot afford to pull those men from their posts; if something attempts to attack our outer defenses while we're in the middle of this... internal strife... those outer defenses must hold. However, I have not been able to get a return message to them; I do not want to risk someone dying out there for a simple letter. As for the Genovese, well, after the Don left your shop last night I have not heard from them since. Of course, I am sure they are dealing with similar difficulties as we are".

"Well..." Looking down, you see Sierra look back up at you. Nodding to her, you turn back to Sun, "We'd be willing to help however we can. However, we're a bit run ragged from the fighting".

"I'd love to have your help John, and you too Sierra," The man looks both of you in the eyes one after the other, "But I'm not your superior here; whatever you do will be voluntary".

"We're going to need some rest before we can do anything too strenuous. Is there any place we can catch a nap for a few hours?"

"I believe your cot is still around, if you're not so picky about accommodations".

With that, Sun points the way to a discrete closet down the hall which, as anticipated, has the same cot you spent about four months sleeping on. Finding an out of the way room, Sierra gives you a slightly dubious look as you crawl onto it.

Despite the lack of comfort from the cot itself, the elf finds a far more comfortable position against your chest. Wrapping your arms around her, she mumbles something before going out like a light.

Listening to Sierra's even breathing for a few minutes, eventually a combination of your exhaustion and the sense of warmth the slowly sinks into your bones causes you to slip out of consciousness.

It feels like you've barely blinked when Sierra shakes you awake.

"Gah," Shaking your head to clear up most of the fog clouding your thoughts, not really feeling much better, "How long were we asleep for?"

"Hour, maybe two," Sierra shrugs in the middle of stretching, "Some skittish clerk was by just a minute ago, said that Sun wanted to talk to us when we woke up".

"Right," Pushing yourself to your feet, you wince as you don't feel much better than you went to sleep as. At least you gave your wounds a chance to heal a bit, "Let's not keep the boss waiting then".

With that, the two of you walk back down to Sun's office, who smiles in greeting, "Welcome back you two, I trust you both got some actual rest?"

You don't respond to the light verbal jab, just nodding your head, "What work do you need to get done".

"A lot more than you'd be able to do on your own, that's for certain," Pushing around a few papers, Sun pulls one up, "First option is to reestablish contact with the commander of the Outer Walls; I need to know that they're still secure. Second is to head down to the Armory; they were in the final stages of producing some of those rifles you designed and if we can get at least a few of them back here it'll greatly help our forces. Third is to head across the city to establish contact with the Genovese; I have a small squad that I can spare to send with you as you'll likely be cutting right through the force attacking them. Lastly is that Godo could use some help down in the forge, a lot of our smiths were at home during the attack and all but a few have stayed there. I'm sure he'll appreciate the help and I'll see what I can have Sierra do if you work there".

"Good," With a nod, the Councilor stands up with you, "I'll arrange for the squad to meet up with you in the main lobby in a few minutes. If you have anything you'd like to take care of, now's the time".

Leaving his office, Sun heads one direction while you and the elf stand there for a moment.

Considering you know the area well enough, it barely takes you a couple of minutes to find the forge your favorite angry dwarf occupies. The fact that it's the only one with activity in it is a rather large hint.

Walking inside, you find said dwarf in the middle of repairing a damaged set of armor. He puts the finishing touches to the repair and sets the set in a pile of other repaired gear, reaching out for the next piece to work on when his eyes firmly settle on you.

"John," His voice is rough with lack of use, though if you're remembering right he's not as irritated as when you first met him all those months ago, "Looks like you managed to survive".

"Considering my shop is currently in vamp hands, it's still a bit of a surprise to me," Is your dry response as you walk across the forge.

The dwarf puts down his forging hammer and removes a thick pair of gloves, "So, what are you here for? I don't have time to talk much".

"How have you been doing, Godo?"

"I've been working my arse off trying to get repair orders done after some idiots broke my works fighting off a bunch of blood suckers, John. Now, I know when someone's trying to suck up to me; what do you want?" Despite his words, the dwarf only looks moderately miffed.

So, of course, you have to resist the urge to laugh at him. You only moderately succeed, "I'm going to be heading back into the fire soon; any spare weapons around that won't be missed?"

"Nothing silvered, that's for damn sure," Getting up from his stool, Godo rummages around for a bit before pulling a few items out of the pile, "You've got a bit of a choice, but you can only take one",

The dwarf nods and tosses you the weapon, along with four loaded magazines, "Considering how little use these things get, no one will miss it".

> You have obtained: 1 Simple Quality Pistol!

You frown a bit as you glance over the pistol, somewhat missing your modified one as you adjust to the slightly different sights.

"Thanks Godo; every little bit helps," Thanking the dwarf for his time is about all you get before he kicks you out, muttering to himself about how his work is never done.

"...Has anyone ever mentioned that you know the strangest people, John?" You glance over at Sierra after she speaks up while the two of you walk towards the main lobby.

Her words cause you to chuckle lightly, "You know you're apart of those 'strange people', right?"

The light shock you get in return is entirely worth it.

Making it to the lobby, you meet up with the squad that'll be accompanying you for the trip across the city. It's a group of four this time, consisting of two spearmen, a rifleman, and a swordsman who you correctly identify as the Sargent of the squad. The four of them are definitely loaded for bear, as you note the shiny silvered weapons in their hands and one of the silvered bayonets you yourself made already attached to the Clockwork Rifle.

With a few quick words about how you'll be in the back of the group and a nod, the entirety of your group set out into the dark night.

Your little group is almost entirely silent as you walk through the mostly empty streets. Occasionally someone will point something out or the Sargent will quietly order a change in route.

The lot of you skulk through the back streets of the Fire District, heading towards the Earth District. You didn't need an explanation to know this was a smart idea; the vamps quite clearly have a firm grasp around the Red Light District, which is exactly what you'd be walking through if you took a direct route to the Genovese HQ.

Still, you can't help but feel a bit anxious. There's still constant gunfire coming from that area, even if it has quieted down somewhat, you can't help but feel concern for Dutch. He's definitely not a field leader, but you know for a fact he wouldn't accept anything other than a front line position in a situation like this.

The bloody idiot...

Pushing that line of thought out of your head, you keep your eyes open for any sign of an ambush as you enter into the Earth District. Next to you, you can see Sierra following your lead.

Which is a good thing, as you're able to catch movement in the next alley over following along with you. With a shout of alarm, you draw your pistol as several thralls charge right for you.

Considering the tight confines of the alleyway, it is a rather good thing that you caught the ambush before it happened. If you hadn't, you would have had to deal with three thralls in close, tight quarters.

As it is, you did catch it coming, so instead you simply raise your pistol and unload it into them. With no room to dodge, you empty the magazine into the undead monsters and one by one they fall to the ground in a heap.

Quickly reloading, you find that the guards have already taken care of several more thralls; you suppose they were the main ambush while you took out the flanking group.

The question is where exactly the lieutenant leading them is. Whoever it is doesn't show themselves, and your group continues on your way.

Entering into the Water District is a tense affair, as the gunshots are getting louder and louder.

The Sargent kindly asks you to lead the way from here, as you know the area far better than he does. It's a fair point, one that you don't argue with, and so you lead the group off of the main street.

Your choice, now, is where exactly you want to head from here.

Front door it is.

Let's see how the Genovese have been holding up...
>>
>>2259681

After a few moments of deliberation, you decide on taking the front entrance. Dutch'll probably be there, which'll help smooth things out, plus the people guarding the back door are probably going to shoot first when they see a group sneaking towards them.

Naturally, you don't go right down the middle of the street, you stick to the side alleys nearby. Within them you find several thrall corpses, each of them shot multiple times in the chest and at least twice in the head. Probably a Genovese patrol of some sorts.

Your sedate pace is interrupted by the sounds of intensifying gunfire. Motioning towards the rest of the team, you break out in a light run.

A few turns later, and you find the reason for the increase in fighing: the vamps are making another spirited attempt at breaking the Genovese line.

Right outside their building, you spot their main firing line; firmly entrenched behind a makeshift barricade. Another second of looking and you spot Dutch, both revolvers blazing into the oncoming attack. You can't hear what he's saying, but you see his mouth moving so you can assume he's helping to coordinate the firing line.

On the vamp's side, the thrills are practically throwing themselves in front of the coming fire, protecting two liuetenants who are in the middle of casting something.

Now what?

[SIERRA ACTIVITY]
>>
>>2260215

The guards immediately split off to reinforce the firing line, who are beginning to get pressed as the wall of bodies push forwards.

You and Sierra both turn for the mages, who continue to chant away. Deciding that you don't want to find out what they're trying to do, you move closer to the two, raise your pistol, and fire.

Every single shot you fire hits, all ten in fact, but you imagine that your attacks are barely an inconvenience for the two liuetenants. Holes are torn in their clothing and blood starts leaking out from them, but despite the fact that you fire until your magazine is empty neither one so much as flinches during their chant.

In fact, all you've done is given them a nice place to focus their attention on. You watch both of them raise a hand at you and a cold sense of dread hits your body. You feel every last muscle in you freeze and refuse to move, turning you into a perfect target for one of them as it raises it's other hand towards you.

And then you're shocked out of your moment of hesitation as two fire bolts slam into the liuetenants, the vampire mages falling to the ground missing their heads and most of their upper body.

Reloading, noting that you only have two mags left, and turning towards where Sierra is, she gives you a slightly questioning look. Did she not feel that?

Shaking your head, you turn your attention back to the remainder of the fight is. Dutch is in his element, blowing thralls away with single shots to the head, right up at the front. The rest of the gunmen aren't quite as thrilled at the idea of the vamps getting into close range, some of them trading their rifles for melee weapons while others start glancing towards the door to the building proper.

As for the Daimyo guards, they're steadily carving a path through the horde's flank, their silvered weapons passing through thralls like they don't exist. Despite this, you can see they're clearly getting bogged down by the horde.

Considering they're closer, and that Dutch is a big boy who can look after himself, you and Sierra rush to reinforce the guards.

Its a good thing that you do, as one of the spearmen gets blindsided by a thrall and you're right there to shoot the undead monster off him before he loses his throat. The other spearman and the Sargent are there to back you up as you step back to continue firing with one hand, the other being used to help the fallen guard back onto his feet.

Sierra covers the other side, both literally and figuratively, in fire, the thralls caught in the attack unable to do much more than burn. You can tell that the elf is far more in control of her attack this time, as the flames don't disintegrate the vampires. Doesn't make it any less effective, though, considering she walks the attack over a fair portion of the horde attacking the Genovese as you and the guards continue to defend your breathing room.

You catch a quick glimpse of Dutch, shouting encouragement at the men who stand beside him and yelling expletives at the ones who start running. He's not very successful at getting them back under control, and he's forced to focus entirely on the fight at hand as the gunslinger narrowly keeps an errant thrall at bay with his gauntlets long enough to headshot it with his free hand.

From there, the fight is quick to end. Sierra's fire took out the majority of the horde and, without the weight of numbers behind them, the thralls are mopped up without further issue. You end up pouring your last magazine into them, having to switch to your broadsword to help the guards finish off the last group that comes for you. The Genovese also manage to pull their act together, the mostly intact firing line taking care of the final stragglers.

"Well, well, well," Your lips twitch into a slight smile at the sound of Dutch's voice, turning over to greet your old friend, "Look who joined the fun. You even brought friends; what for?"

"Here to reestablish contact between you all and the Bastion," Giving him a quick handshake, you motion towards the squad of guards, "We didn't have too much trouble getting across the city, thankfully. How have you all been holding up here?"

The lot of you fall in line behind the mafia enforcer, walking passed the barricade where the remaining men on the line check over ammo and bandage up minor injuries. More than a few of them are getting walked into the building, clearly injured to the point where actual medical attention is warranted.

Dutch brings you all inside and starts leading to a very familiar waiting room, "We've been alright. That was the worst of the attacks we've had so far. But it's alright, we've got plenty of ammo and I've got plenty of targets; everyone's happy".

You can't help the snort that escapes you, "Maybe you're happy, but I doubt few others are".

"Everyone's a critic," With a smirk, he holds open the door for everyone to enter into the room. You can tell that there's something else on his mind, so you motion for Sierra to head in before you. She's the last one inside and she's barely inside when Dutch pulls you aside.

"What's wrong, Dutch?" You know something is concerning, not just because of the general situation but because your old friend actually looks troubled by something.

He doesn't say anything, just continuing on until the two of you are in a discrete corner on this floor. Turning back to you, the gunslinger rubs a hand over his forehead for a moment before speaking up, "...We have reason to believe that the Gambino's are in bed with the vamps".

Sighing to yourself, you let your mind wander to the fat cat you dealt with on the train. How the hell would he be able to create an alliance with a bunch of vamps? "It's... It's not you, Dutch, this is just hard for me to believe. I met the guy who was probably going to be the Don over here; he didn't exactly strike me as having that kind of pragatisim".

"I don't know what to tell ya about that, though we might be finding out sooner or later," Dutch places his hands over the grips of his revolvers, a habit of his that you know means he's full of nervous excitement, "We finally managed to pin down the location that the Gambinos are running out of here. And I mean what they're really running out of, not their front operation. We were planning on going in, see if we can't find any particularly damning evidence in the process. Only problem is that we can't afford to pull an entire squad off rotation while we're under attack like this. However, with you and your gal here, things are a bit different. Dutch leads you back to the meeting room, "We'll take what we can get at this point, in all honesty".

He opens the door, unveiling a talk between Archmage and the Daimyo guards that you walked into the middle of.

"The Bastion still ho-" The four of them turn to look at you, the mage not looking too surprised to see the two of you walk in.

"Are you prepared, Dutch?" Archmage addresses your friend directly, looking over at him evenly.

"Yep," He glances over at where Sierra is sitting off to the side, just looking everything over, "Just here to grab the mage".

The elf looks a bit confused, though you give her your best attempt at a calming look.

The middle-aged man doesn't seem to have an issue with the request, "Good luck then".

The three of you walk out, Sierra predictably sticking to your side as Dutch leads the way, "What's this about?"

You don't bother whispering your response like she did with her question, "Another vamp raid; hopefully this'll be the big one".

"And you're going in?" There's a mildly accusing tone in her voice which, considering the last one you came back from you had to be carried back, you can't fault her for.

"And you are too, unless you don't want to join us," To follow up your words, you made sure to run your hand through her dark, smooth hair. Feels nice and, if by the way Sierra freezes for a moment, it probably does for her too.

She looks away from you, unwilling to meet your gaze, "...alright". Looking up at your old friend, the elf raises her voice, "Who else is going?"

"I am," Turning around the corner is Gladiator, clearly geared and ready for a fight, what with the fact that he's wearing a fair amount of armor, for a guy who rarely wears any, and that he's got a few back up weapons, "It'll just be the four of us, then".

"Let me grab my rifle out of my locker and we'll be on our way," Dutch walks off, heading for the ready room that you were in last time.

That from our pool or Sierra’s? Will we be able to pull adrenal surge afterwards?

If it’s from ours and yes, then let’s do it.

Let’s do it then, and keep Sierra’s reserves for blasting.

"How're you doing on mana?" It's a good question, considering that's about all Sierra has for offensive ability, which is why you ask her.

"The rest we took helped. I think I can pull two more major flame spells, or probably a dozen lesser ones," Shrugging a bit, the elf just adjusts her magic focus, "All depends on the situation".

"Alright, good to hear," Turning around, you look over at Gladiator, "Speaking of fire, you mind letting me borrow a sword for a few minutes, Gladiator?"

"Wh- Oh, Archmage mentioned something a few days ago; that what you have planned?"

"Yep," Sorting through your pack, you pull out your Conjure Fire Sigil and, after accepting a scimitar from the swordsman, you set the two items on the floor and focus.

After all, this is only the second time you've attempted this...

Giving the blade a glance over and taking a hard look at the Rune, you place it down onto the ground, place a hand over the weapon, and close your eyes.

You don't need to see to know that there's smoke slowly leaking out of the corner of your eyes and the edges of your wrists, gently floating down before wrapping itself around the sword.

No, you push it out of your mind and concentrate inwards. This enchantment is far, far more complex than the Silence Sigil you managed to create back then. Not only do you have to maintain the integrity of metal itself, but you also need to create a reaction that will cause a small, contained explosion upon impact.

And that's a problem, since you need to do this all without any kind of fuel or igniter.

But hey, there is plenty of oxygen in the air around you...

Several seconds pass as you concentrate, etching the necessary formula and area of desired effect. It's certainly not an exact process, especially considering the fact that you're roughly calculating the surface area of a curved blade in your head, but you can feel the fire flickers of flame as the Rune completes.

Slowly opening up your eyes, you glance up and note that Sierra and Gladiator are looking at you with a kind of disturbed interest. You feel more than see the smoke clear from the blade and recede back into your body.

That, combined with the fact that you pick up and hand the weapon back to Gladiator snaps the two of them back to attention.

"I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing that, John," Dutch's voice breaks the silence, and you see him walking towards your group with his rifle in one hand and a handful of pistol magazines in the other, "I've got my shit, and this is for you since you're out, so are we ready to go or what?"

> You have received: 3 Pistol Magazines (10 Rounds per Mag)!

With practiced motions, you smoothly load the full mag into your pistol, "Yeah, I think we're ready".
