ASOIAF Reincarnation: A Male Powder Fantasy – Thread 8

Character Sheet: https://pastebin.com/RsQUNkkx
Future Updates and Shitposts: https://discord.gg/DP7kpEf
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?searchall=powder+fantasy

Fifth Month of 281 AC, Lands of House Whent, Castle of Harrenhal, The Riverlands
Powder Storage – 60 cartridges
Personal Funds – 0 silver stags
Armament – Mastercrafted Flintlock Rifle, Squire’s Sword
Protection – Munitions Grade Armor, Kite Shield

On the last thread you distinguished yourself in the Squire's melee by displaying your skill of beating up rich teenagers with a blunted piece of metal, taking down 4 squires whilst wearing the colors of your Knightly Master, whom was exceedingly pleased of your performance.

After the match, you proceeded the equipment of your of your rivals only to proceed and gamble it all away in the hopes that the Tourney of Harrenhal proceeds exactly as you remembered it happening in the books. If you are right, you stand to make quite a large sum of money, if you're wrong... Well, you'll think of something.

Returning back to your quarters, you spent some time with your brother before the feast, coming to the conclusion that knighthood is only a matter of convenience to you and nothing more and that should you decide to ever take the oaths of a knight, you would have absolutely no problem of ignoring your oaths, provided you personally felt like you were morally justified in doing so.
You also told your brother that rather than becoming a knight fighting for honor, gold and glory, you'd much rather spend your time trying to create a flying machine.

After a bit of pow-wow, you made your way to the feast during which you were introduced to Hector's Uncle, Ser Chrestan Erenford, a Landed Knight under the service of House Frey, but not before scarfing down a healthy portion of pie. Ser Chrestan introduced you to his fellow bannermen and he told you of his troubles with the Crannogmen and how his hands were tied in the matter. You spent the rest of the evening with Frey bannermen playing darts and telling them stories of Reach and it's wonderfully pompous culture.

Right now, you are fighting on the second day of the Squire's melee and you're pretty sure you just broke someone's arm.

Shield with a moose on

Oh shit
You might have gotten him pretty bad.
You walk over to him and extend your arm. "Do you need some hel-"
*OOF*
Deploys a well placed kick you straight to your nuts with full force.
Well fuck you too cunt.
>Roll endurance to see whether or not you drop on your knees. (3d6)
>Either way, you are stunned for this round and take 2 damage

Whilst you were busy recoiling from the kick to your groin and the man you were trying to help picks himself up, the fight continued around you.

Benjen Stark assists Drack Vallerd to take down one of the enemies, thus keeping the flank rolling
After being thrashed, the squire yields under the superior force.
Ronas Throng manages to pressure his foe and cause him to yield.
The Center remains largely stagnant with neither side willing to commit to an offensive... yet.

Your health is now at 7/9
Whether or not you pass the endurance test determines if you stay in the fight.

You toughen up, correct your ball positioning and get back to the fight and move to assist Ronas with his opponent, but the squire's defense seems to somehow hold.

Outnumbered, the remaining opponents begin to overexert themselves and begin to get reckless with their attacks, trying their very best to try and drag at least some of you down with them.
If at least one of you falls, that means that much less ransom must be paid.

However as both sides are pushing to smack one-another to the dirt, one with the use of teamwork and one with sheer force of will and stubborn perseverance, neither seems to be able to deliver a strong enough blow to finish this as both sides keep shrugging off eachother's blow.

It is clear that their side cannot keep this up for much longer however. All it takes is one last push.

Choose your action.

Since Ronas won’t take the opportunity to push this guy’s shit in, you decide to take the liberty and wrap things up here yourself.

The Squire clearly was getting visibly exhausted as he was doing his best to try and fend off his opponents with his sloppy defenses. Ease by which your blow struck past his defenses was almost laughable. His awareness was clearly split between several opponents as he was desperately trying to claw down at least one with him with feeble blows.

Mistake.
He lowered his shield during one of his blows blow, which left him open.
This would mean the end of the game for him. You pressed on and landed a vicious blow over his shield, straight at his shoulder with enough force to, cause him to drop his shield, at which point he started backing off in panic.

”I YIELD! I YIELD!”

With that, the dogpile began.
Remaining two squires on the enemy team began to get ganged up on by the superior numbers. However, they fought valiantly and managed to beat down Thomas before being completely overwhelmed.

There were some minor injuries suffered by the losing side in the last push, but this marks for the end of this matchup.
You noticed that the more skilled the opponents become, the faster the matches tend to end as each blow becomes more and more dangerous.

The name Reach actually does make quite a lot of sense when you consider that it's name comes from the fact that it's a creeping landmass bordering 5 kingdoms and has been throughout it's history been performing a landgrab after landgrab by having vassals drift to their realm.

By my calculations, the territory that would be know as reach was before it's unification less than half the size of what it is today. Of course, they were the borders predating the Andal invasion.

Also, there's not a whole lot of mountains in Reach.
>>
>>2237797
Yes. In this particular instance, you'd toss half of it to Ronas since he sort of did manage to drop him down to 40% before you swung at that poor fucker.

Considering that his Combat Defense was down from the reckless attack he performed, you really didn't even get a chance to perform a second swing.

You pretty much got 4 degrees of success though since you rolled high and you could have 1shotted him anyhow even if he WAS at full health.

Hmm... let's see:

Tortures people for pleasure.
Orders execution for trivial offenses
Is a cunt to anyone he deems inferior (everyone)

versus

Making the dude who kicked us in the balls pay more.

Yeah. We're two peas in a pod.
>>
>Tortures people for pleasure
I think that's just the show thing.
From what I can tell, he commits these terrible actions from either his own insecurity or his desire for attention, because as a Prince he's got so very few boundaries that actually make the people whose opinions he actually cares about stop what they're doing and pay attention to what he's doing.

>Orders execution for trivial offenses
His fathers corpse had not yet gone cold and his best friend tries to start a coup. Joffrey idolized nobody more than Robert Baratheon. Besides that, I don't think he really ordered anyone's execution did he?

>Is a cunt to anyone he deems inferior
Not really. He does actually know how to act like a prince and follow etiquette in official proceedings. He generally speaking only tends to act like a cunt to people he actually cares about since he's insecure as fuck.

Main problem that Joffrey has is that he's completely devoid of any sense of right and wrong, of course, such a trait could even be considered desirable in a politician should he be sufficiently intelligent to have learned to maneuver in society, but as his mother always stepped in whenever his behavior could be corrected, this never happened.

He's ultimately a deranged youth that never had the chance to become adjusted into society. I view him more as a tragic character than as just a straight out asshole. Especially considering how easy it must have been for people aware of his condition to have manipulated him with the right words.

Then again, it might just be me who doesn't like one-dimensional characters and that I'm projecting that unto him.
>>
Of course, Joffrey did act like a turd sandwich towards the butcher's boy, but ultimately there was a complication of status brought into the whole thing as well.

Peasantry weren't really supposed to mingle with the nobility in the first place.
Especially considering that Arya Stark wasn't just any bumfuck nobility, she was a Stark, bloodline of the Kings of Winter, the Wardens of the North, a child of one of the Lords Paramount.

If Tommen or Myrcella were hanging around with peasant boys and girls, how do you think their families would have reacted? If they were lucky, the peasant kids would just end up disappearing some day and they were told that they left for a journey to Essos or something.

I think that Joffrey reacted to the scenario exactly how he was taught to react because he is incapable of running things through a moral compass first.
>>
>>2238068
>>2238097
>I think that Joffrey reacted to the scenario exactly how he was taught to react because he is incapable of running things through a moral compass first.

And this makes him a dick to people without them doing anything to deserve it. You can argue against it all you want, but this northerner literally dishonored himself by striking us out of petty malice. He needs to be called on it.
>>
>>2238068
>I think that's just the show thing.
He literally keep Salsa locked in a room and let's the Kingsguard take turns beating her in the books m8.

>Besides that, I don't think he really ordered anyone's execution did he?
Dontos Hollard. The Septa. Syrel Forel. That entire peasant mob.

>He generally speaking only tends to act like a cunt to people he actually cares about since he's insecure as fuck.
Being a cunt because you're insecure still makes you a cunt.

Like, you can have your fancfiction about him, he's pretty much hated by everyone in Westeros, including his family, both books and show.
>>
>>2238121
You did sort of disgrace him by offering to pick him up despite being his junior and of considerably smaller stature than him and on top of that you're from the softest lands in the realm.

How do you think it would have looked had he taken your hand? North is not a place with a culture of chivalry. It is a place where strength, tenacity and integrity are valued.
It's a place where old ways still hold true where a proud northerner would oftentimes rather kill themselves than allow themselves to become a burden.

Children are oftentimes drowned by their parents if they are born crippled or malformed. Such is the way of those who still hold to the old ways of the North.
>>
>>2238137
Well, if we didn't know it was disgraceful then, we don't know it's dIsgraceful now. So why should we let out of character knowledge guide our decisions?

If you want to be cheeky and put in stupid options, don't be surprised when we take them.
>>
>>2238134
>He literally keep Salsa locked in a room and let's the Kingsguard take turns beating her in the books m8.
Fair point.
Still, he might just have grown to dislike Sansa on a personal level, but I agree he was of the age that sadism might definitely have been his kink.

>Dontos Hollard. The Septa. That entire peasant mob
The Septa was member of Ned's household. She was executed as a traitor. If I remember correctly, her questioning was never shown. She most likely was uncooperative and killed for it. Such is punishment for treason.
The fact that he killed her just to torment Sansa? Possible, but not confirmed.

Dontos Hollard... He arrived on the King's birthday drunk, naked and without a helm.
Pretty fucking sure that counts as a lese majeste. He was disrespecting the crown, so naturally Joffrey acted as he personally believed a king ought to act and decided to mete out punishment.

The Peasant mob on the other hand... Well, they had no rights to begin with. Just like Tywin taught with the Reyne Tarbeck rebellion, when someone rebels, you make an example of them and they won't do it again.
>>
>>2238160
>you make an example of them and they won't do it again.
And he gets his shit slapped in by Tyrion for doing that, because it wasn't a fucking rebellion-- it was him being a douche.

>Joffrey acted as he personally believed a king ought to act and decided to mete out punishment.
By fucking DROWNING him. That's literally above and beyond torture in any of the seven realms.

But sure, we're just like Joffery for making a dude who supposedly values "strength, tenacity and integrity" who kicked us in the nuts pay a little extra on his honor.
>>
>>2238141
If I didn't let you guys Ned yourselves every now and then, would this really count as an ASOIAF quest?
>>
>>2238177
We're not fucking Brettonians. Getting even with a dude who wronged us is not torturing little girls or drowning people to death.
>>
>>2238167
You used to live in the Iron Isles.
Default method of execution is drowning in there, so it's not really above and beyond. There's also plenty of nastier ways they kill people with when they feel like it's warranted, though nobility tend to be spared from such fates.

But no, I'm not saying you're just like Joffrey if you want him to pay extra for his gear for kicking you in the nuts.
Acting vindictive of the results after a social blunder however is very much a Joffrey thing, which is what I got from you as an individual.

Holding on to grudges isn't dishonorable in itself though, on the contrary, if you manage to right a wrong committed on to your family, that in itself is seen as an honorable deed since they usually make for great stories.

>You used to live in the Iron Isles.
Default method of execution is drowning in there

Literally everyone thinks the ironborn are all thugs and outlaws so it still counts as above and beyond torture to any noble's sensibilities in mainland westeros, and the argument they were making is that slapping your kid for misbehaving is normal but beating him to a bloody pulp ain't, even though they're both violence they're not exactly the same, so comparing one to the other is fucking retarded. Joffrey was an extreme turd and the MC is just taking his just due for a slight.

Now focus your autism back to writing you fucking play-pretend slave.
>>
>>2240528
This is objectively false. Drowning isn't a particularly cruel way of killing by medieval standards.

Ironborn aren't seen as thugs and outlaws any more than rest of Westerosi lords.
Raiding and pillage is pretty fucking commonplace during every single conflict. Even Knights do it to feed the troops under their command, because it costs so much to transport food with medieval tech.

That alone isn't enough to make Ironborn seen as a special case especially considering that most riverlands houses are descendants of Ironborn houses anyhow from back when Harren the Black ruled.

What the Iron Islanders are and what they generally are seen as is a throwback prior to Andal invasion and the Pact.
Petty kings that managed to somehow hold on to their traditions despite the changing of the ages.

Sure, there's the Targ propaganda demonizing Harren's rule, but besides that they haven't really done enough until war of five kings to warrant that much loathing when there are enemies much closer.
>>
>Demand extra
>Share your spoils

As you advance on the rankings yet again, the ring is once again cleared for the ceremonial exchange of arms where the losers hand off their arms and armor to the better man and you and Ser Hector were awaiting in one of the tents

"So, Arthur, what was the deal with that exchange?"
"I felt like I might have broken his arm, so I wondered if he needed help. He returned my concern for his well-being, with a kick to the groin."
"Yes, Northeners tend to be like that. They have a different set of values from us good, Seven-fearing folk down south. They are a very proud lot."
"Well, I feel like he ought to pay extra for that kick."
He twirls his moustache and smiles
"Very well, leave it to me. I shall bump up his ransom. Begrudging the victor is hardly befitting for men of noble upbringing whether they follow the Seven or not."
You take some water from the pewter pitcher to refresh yourself and plant your ass on a stool.
"So, how much do you think we can get out of him?"
"Gear of that quality, it's definitely custom made for him. His shield was not of bad quality either. We could probably slap an extra 100 silver and they'll probably pay it up, though begrudgingly since it's still cheaper than ordering a new one."
"And if I we were to go higher?"
"Then you might have to look for a buyer yourself. No doubt you'd find one amongst the contestants if you looked. Alternatively, you could also hold on to it and give it as a gift to someone in exchange for a favor. It is quality armor after all."

The sun hangs above the overcast as the moans of the wailing tower reverberate throughout the tourney grounds.

The yellow clad tourney staff place the burlap sheets on the ground with the equipment of the lost contestants. On your side, the bounty won from your adversaries was neatly lined up.

On the side of your foemen, empty cloths to be filled with ransom, should they afford it.

Balding man shouts from a horn out of the jury's tower.
"The Exchange of Arms begins!"
With this call, clarions sounded the beginning of the ceremony unlike with the more unofficial proceedings of the previous bout.

The order of proceedings went by one's ranking.
Benjen Stark being of the highest birth stepped forth first, having claimed victory over a foe no less impressive than yours.
As he was not a knight, he was instead escorted by the Master at Arms of his house who declared that no ransom will be asked.
Understandable. House such as his should not be of want for coin nor armor.

Next was Drack Vallard. "One half of the market price shall be enough a ransom from such worthy foe."
Then went Ronas Throng's master "One half shall be requested by my squire as well."

Next was you.
You look up to Ser Hector. He's got this.
"My Squire would demand the traditional ransom from the foes that yielded to him."
As the man bearing a gauntlet on a red fielf began to look through his purse, Hector interjected.
"Pardon, but did your ward not refuse to yield? I seem to recall he struck out after being bested."
The Man freezes, clearly simmering with an angry stare at Ser Heronford.
"Surely you would not deny small recompense? It was an honest mistake after all. How does 100 pieces of silver sound?"
He doesn't say anything, just gives a sullen look for a few tense moments, but decides not to make a scene and tosses the coin on the cloth.
Shortly after followed by the a knight bearing a white stripe adorned with three black helmets on a yellow field who seemed to be eager to just get this over with.

Finally, there were the three squires of common birth who managed to dogpile a single foe in the end and they also requested a traditional ransom.

With the issue of ransom sorted out, the masters of the participants walked past eachother to collect the belongings of their squires, turned around, shook eachother's hands and returned to their squires, making them carry the loot.

> Gained 875 Silver Stags
> Gained 620 Silver Stags

With that, the ceremony came to a close and you all walked out of the ring from your respective sides. Before you all went your seperate ways, there was one thing left to do.
"Hold on Ronas. I've got something for you."
"Hmm?"
"It's your share of the ransom. 300 stags for the guy you warmed up for me."

You offer a bag of silvers with a gold coin inside.
He looks at you a bit strangely.
"Your knightly master put on quite a show for 100 silver, but you give up thrice the amount rather easily."
"That wasn't for the money. Rules exist for a reason."
He smiles at that comment and takes the bag
"I like you. If you're ever passing through Serret's lands come and say hello. I'll recommend you to my father if you seek to become a sworn sword."
"I will certainly keep that in mind."
You shake his hand and return to Ser Hector.

>Strike out the Northener from Book of Grudges
>Go Gamble (all of the winnings)

The coins clinked inside the bag whilst you left the ring behind, walking alongside Ser Hector.
"I'm gonna visit the bookies for a bit."
"Just as well, I need to collect my winnings anyhow."
"Winnings?"
"You didn't think I was gonna bet on you after having trained and recommended you to the lists myself?"
He pats you in the back
"Come on lad. Let's head to the bookies."

The two of you start walking into the direction of the Wailing tower.
"I guess I didn't think you were the sort that gambled."
"I don't think this could be qualified as much of a gamble. I've been on many tourneys. I know roughly on what level the competition tends to be at."
"So, how much have you got from me?"
"Thus far? I bet on you getting most takedowns on the first round and my gold coin suddenly turned to ten. On the second round I bet that your team would win, almost doubling that."
Hmmm... So you weren't the only one gambling

As you began to reach the bookies, there was a bit of a crowd gathered around it.
Smallfolk and nobility, both coming to collect their winnings or to simply place fresh bets on the tomorrow's matches.

Of course, you did not have any need to mingle with the smallfolk. The Nobility had their own VIP section from which they would be served without the need to line up with the common dregs of the society. It was a very large and brightly colored Pavilion tent with banners of House Whent planted outside of it in a walled off and heavily guarded section.

The Guards took a look at you, Ser Hector flashed his Brass token and they allowed you to pass into the walled off section. Maybe they're only given to high rollers.
"Please take a seat outside the Pavilion, the servants will bring you refreshments. It shouldn't take too long for you to be received."

Having gone halfway through your cider, familiar faces appeared from the pavilion. It was one of the men whom you had spent the last evening playing darts with, Lord Tylan of Hag's Mire. Your eyes meet and he decides to come over with his men.
"Well if it isn't the Golden boy himself! Good show. That strike that you felled the Northener with? Immaculate! I heard he even had to see a Maester afterwards."
Ser Hector decides to step in at this point.
"Yes, I taught him quite well. He's nearly 14 and already he's had people interested in adding him to their court in Westerlands as soon as he receives his knighthood."
"Is that so? Well, if that doesn't work out, I could most certainly find you employment under my roof when you come of age, should you need it."
Huh, looks like people are starting to recognize your talent.

"I will most certainly keep that in in mind Lord Tylan."
"Good lad. I won't keep you any longer. I hope to see you at the feast."

You watch Lord Tylan walk off with his guards.
"Looks like I'm starting to attract attention."
"Not a whole lot of boys your age can break an arm of a Northman who is almost a man grown. Your initial performance in the first round has not gone ignored either. Various Lords have begun to be more and more interested in talking to me, hoping that I teach their sons like I taught you.
No small thanks to you bearing my colours in battle mind you."
So that's why he has been in such a good mood
"You go handle your business first, I'll handle mine afterwards."

He smiles and pats you on the shoulder before disappearing into the Pavilion and re-emerging after a few moments with a freshly filled coinpurse on his belt and a beaming smile on his face. He signals you to come in as he exits the tent.

"It's you again."
"Aye, it's me. Here to up my bets once again."
"You're entirely sure you want to do this? I can't exactly give the money back if you lose, you understand that?"
"I am completely certain of this."
He glares at you for a few moments in silent disapproval
"I don't like it. I'll do it, but I won't like it. Boys your age shouldn't gamble. It's just wrong."
He takes your brass token and hammers an extra mark on it and writes something into his books.
"Here. I hope you best of luck in the games."
"Thank you VERY much~"

Emerging from the gambling tent, you start heading back towards your quarters with Ser Hector.

>Go hang with your 'father' a bit

[1/2]

You've been on the road quite a while now.
Serving as a page from the age of seven and then spending a year as a squire, returning home only for brief periods during holidays and other such special occasions. Come to think of it, even before being hauled off to become a page, you didn't exactly see your parents that much as rearing children was a job for the servants.

Sure, there were the occasional talks and inquiries about how you've progressed with your studies and whether or not you've made any new friends or things like that, but besides that... You recall spending more time hanging out with the Maester than those people that supposedly gave birth to you.
Not that you're complaining.
This system has worked out pretty well for you after all.

Still, you felt it might be a good idea to talk more with this man. After all, he might have decided to match up either you or your brother to some marriage you didn't know about whilst you were gone. These are things you ought to know about.

Your father was enjoying a drink on a lounge area built halfway up the wall's interior, clearly made to host the garrison of this segment of the gargantuan wall as it simply was not logistically feasible for the men to gather around in the Hall of Hundred Hearths for each meal. Climbing the stairs up to the wall takes a fair bit of time in itself.

Your father's squires were busy polishing their equipment with rags, oil, grease and some waxy substance that seemed to resemble a bar of soap around a round table. Your father was sitting by the window, clearly more interested in the book than the doings of his wards.
>>
[2/2]

The Wooden chair creaks as you take the empty seat opposite of him.
He holds up a finger for a moment, marks the page and closes the book and looks into your eyes.
"Hello son. What brings you to me today?"
"I have once again won in the melee."
"Yes, I saw that. Ser Hector was not mistaken when he told you skilled, though I'm afraid your skills might have allowed you to grow a bit haughty."
"Pardon?"
"That Northern boy you beat. He was not from a small house. His name was Ethan Glover, he is squire to Brandon Stark himself."
Shit
"Is this going to become a problem?"
"Hmm... Possibly not. North is quite far away so I doubt they would bother causing us much trouble. I should expect they forget you the moment they find something else to be annoyed at. Still, I hope you will avoid mishaps like this in your future bouts."
"He's the one that broke the rules."
"True, but we're men of the Reach, not Stormlander warhawks, reaving Ironborn or quarreling Northeners. Different things are expected of us. Reach is the greatest of the Seven Kingdoms because we uphold a higher standard to the rest."
He takes a sip from his goblet.
"Still, you're young. It's expected you'd make a mistake or two. Just remember, Chivalry is not just about being quick with a blade. Of course, I expect Ser Hector has taught you about this."
You recline back on your chair and look out of the window
"Yes, I've heard this many times. Be just, be brave, protect the women, the weak, the innocent and do what's told by your liege, right?"
"That's the gist of it, yes."

Is there anything you'd like to talk to him about specifically?
>"I'm not really convinced on this whole knighthood business to be entirely honest."
>"How's things back home?"

"I've already been scouted by couple of houses to work as a sworn sword."
He scoffs
"I am not surprised. Our house has a history of producing knights of quality and even amongst our bloodline you stand out for your age. There is prestige in that. Even if you will not win the tourney, I would not be surprised if you were offered an early knighthood in exchange for service and a connection to the Reach."
"You're a knight. How do you think I should handle this?"
"Make sure the person you're serving is someone you can respect. Knight should not forget his oaths. This you probably already know, but you should not take oaths you do not intend to keep. It is more honorable to be a hedge knight than a false one."

"Since you mentioned reach, how are things back at home? Anything that I should know about?"
The man takes another sip from his goblet, reclines back on his chair and exhales.
"Very little. Just the usual boring management stuff. Your Mother tells me that the tax rates have have gone up on our region. None by doing of our Lord Tarly of course, he prefers his levies over coin after all, but it's still affecting us as we sell most of our crops to Highgarden, which means we still pay their tariffs."
He waves towards the squires still polishing their kit at the table
"I've taken some extra squires in order to help our monetary situation. We're not exactly in jeopardy, but every bit helps. Diligent lads, though still ways off from becoming knights themselves."
"Still, it does affect the situation of the smallfolk more heavily over time and that will affect us. I've discussed about possible solutions to this predicament with our Liege Lord, but we're still ironing out the details."

Hmm...
"You planning on taking a loan from him or something?"
"No, we've something else in mind if things start to take a turn for the worse, but you need not worry about that. That is a discussion for another time. Our liege has our back, that much I can tell you right now."
"Well, that's certainly good to know."

"Still, I'm glad to hear that other houses have shown interest in employing you. Your future prospects are looking bright. Certainly, your mother will be glad to hear of that. She's a lot better at these courtly dealings than I am. I'm certain she'll once again figure out a way to make something out of that connection that I overlooked."

"Tell me son, we see so little of you, how has life as a squire treated you? I hope you do not begrudge me for the life I chose for you."

>"I would rather go and spend my time creating things than learning to kill people."
>"I like neither swords nor horses, but they're useful tools I guess."
>"I get to beat up rich teenagers for money, what's not to like?"
>"I'm alright with a military career. Don't you worry about that."

>"I'm alright with a military career. Don't you worry about that."
>"Hector's nice enough guy. He doesn't treat me like a servant, more like an extension of himself."

Hmm...
You never were aversed with the idea of knighthood itself. It is quite a well paid profession after all and the title of Ser does command a certain degree of respect from both amongst the nobility and the peasantry.

"I don't really mind the tuition you've chosen for me. Military career is something I'm perfectly alright with. Who knows, maybe I'll become a Commander one day? As for my life as a squire, Hector's a pretty decent guy. He doesn't really treat me as a servant as much as an extension of himself. He never tries to force me to do things he himself avoids doing."
The Old knight smiles at you, clearly pleased with the answer.
"Yes, there always was more than meets the eye with Ser Hector. He may seem aloof or even shameless at times, but he always was a man very serious about increasing his fame. It was to be expected that he would have focused your training with future tourneys in mind. I am glad he did not disappoint."

One of the squires comes to show your father the helmet he polished.
Your father takes it for inspection.
"Let me see... Not a spec of rust. That's a good sign. Can't exactly see my face on it just yet, but it's clean enough to be painted. We'll handle that part tomorrow. For now, make sure the rest of them know how to do it properly."
"Yes my lord."
"Oh, and no cleaning duty for you today due to good work."
"Thank you my lord."
The young squire beams with pride and takes his helmet and returns to the table with rest of the squires.
"Little rewards like such help keep them motivated."
You shrug
"If you say so."
Your father grabs his almost empty goblet downs the remainder of it down his throat and picks up his book.
"Well, my cup has run dry and I've yet a bit more reading I must do before the feast."
"Right, I catch your drift, good talk."
"Yes, we should do this more."

The Hall of Hundred Hearths loomed above you once again with oppressive weight under it's thickly beamed wooden ceiling and the excessively tall stone walls.

The tables were once again filled with fantastical quantities of food and the air was thick with mouthwatering scents mixed with the smell of burnt candles as music of string and various pipes and horn instruments echoed throughout the halls amongst the bustle of nobility with the crackling fire of hearths ever present on the background.

It would seem there were more people in attendance today. Perhaps some people liked to be fashionably late or they simply were exhausted from their journey. Many a man was playing drinking games, dice, boardgames and various pub games, such as darts, arm wrestling, dominoes and various other games you didn't recognize.

What ended up catching your eye was a man clearly past his prime, a mongrel of Valyrian descent, devoid of the silvery hair of the pureblood, instead having a receding mane of light brown hair but still possessing the vivid lilac eyes of old Valyria.

He was wearing a dark robe with a symbol of a white circle inside a square, inside a triangle inside a circle woven to his breast, performing parlor tricks to his merry company of men that were laughing and gorging themselves in wine and pie. The Symbol you recognized distinctly as an alchemical one. Curiosity piqued you observed what he was doing.

First he took four burning candles and blowed them out and igniting them again by merely holding a burning stick of tinder upon the smoke.
Next, he blew out his piece of tinder, heated it in the flame and then touched the candle's wax to ignite it again. Tricks you remember from chemistry class back on your first life.

You decided to approach the men.
"Pardon my intrusion."
The merry men a bit in their cups turned to look at you.
"I could not help but to notice the interesting tricks you were performing. Would you mind if I sat with you to watch some more?"
The Alchemist smiles "Of course youngster. Make some room lads. Tell me, what is your name?"
You extend your arm "I'm Arthur of House Tallon, squire of Ser Hector Heronford" he shakes your hand "Taeron Qoharyon, I'm a Wisdom owning my own workshop in the Capital, selling alchemical solutions to various problems people may have, tall one over there is Bran Tallmound, he owns an armory and the twins there are Thomas and Thomas Garhall, they deal in jewelry."
The two Westerlanders lift their cups in acknowledgement

As you spent the evening with these men, you learned that they all were men with noble blood in their veins but so distant from the main family they'd have no hopes for inheritance for any actual holdings.
Things being such as they are, they found their fortunes as socialites in the capital, paying their ways in the noble circles with money gained from investments made with gold they gained from their families.

> Congrats, you now are acquainted with few boozed up minor nobles in the capital which have a reputation of getting things.
> Taeron Qoharyon, distant relative of a minor Valyrian house in Crownlands. Has connections to Alchemists Guild
> Thomas and Thomas Garhall, minor nobility hailing from westerlands. Heavily involved in the trade of precious metals.
