You are Sonia Reynard, Viscount of Rioja and a member of House Jerik-Dremine!

With the end of the Dominion Civil War your planet and House are once again safe. Now you've turned your eye towards unfinished business: Planning an expedition to the Dyson Sphere.

A nearly perfect sphere containing a smallish yellow dwarf star, it has a radius of roughly 140 million kilometers. Seeming to violate physical laws, it should just fly apart under its own weight. Whatever it's made of most conventional weapons aside from antimatter have proven next to useless against it.

The presence of an energy drain on any electronic devices that get near the interior surface is yet another problem. It seems to be nearly identical to what the hostile Neeran Empire uses against enemy boarding teams on their big ships to limit their effectiveness.

Too many unanswered questions point to this place. Even more so since the Empire captured that section of space early in the war.

After assembling a team of specialists, scientists and your personal guard you set out for the construct. Since arriving there you've recovered sensor and communications logs from an old science station the enemy now occupy. With these your team was able to locate a long missing escape capsule and eventually find marines from your old attack wing. They've been stranded on the sphere for ten years.

The sensor data also allowed your team to search out one of numerous hidden facilities used by the Sphere's caretakers. Were it not for the artifacts carried by you and Ilya it's doubtful you would have been able to locate one of the the now hidden towers.

From the Caretakers you've learned of their attempts to resist the Neeran Empire without causing the destruction of the sphere. That doesn't seem to be easy and your doubts about their ability to hold on until the Alliance can aid them are obvious. With that in mind you agreed to help sabotage the efforts of Empire to study the sphere's technology.

Infiltrating a site where enemy forces were excavating sphere technology your team managed to locate and sabotage a weather control system. This created a deadly thunderstorm that should render the device and surrounding territory inaccessible for some time.

I really wanted to start this at 11AM today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lftXoJTckr0 [ Dark Knight Rises - On Thin Ice ]

With the weather control system sabotaged you've returned to the ship. Everyone survived and was able to be extracted. The same can't be said for the Empire's local garrison. Several of their shuttles that were in the air at the time or attempted to assist in evacuation efforts were struck down. They may have initially mistaken it for normal lightning rather than the far more destructive bolts common to artifact weapons.
There's no telling how the civilians from the nearby town fared.

"We got in and out without firing a shot. For the most part that is." you explain to Einridi.

The use of your lightning gauntlet should hopefully play up the idea that it was either an accident or the result of the Empire meddling with things they shouldn't be.

"Dangerous, but it seems to have had good effect. We won't know for certain how well it worked for days or weeks but you've carried out the task we've requested of you."
The caretaker sighs.
"Now I suppose you wouldn't mind a reward for your efforts? We don't usually make a habit of handing out artifacts to those helping us out of greed rather than selflessness. However I suspect you might have helped even without an incentive."

[ ] I try to help those in need
[ ] If it helps to win the war
[ ] I might have?
[ ] Reward please?
>>
>>2226516

We do try to help people in need. If helping them helps win the war, all the more better. Of course if they're offering a reward, we wont turn it down. He got us into contact with someone to help return Svidur to us. I think that tops most rewards available.

Speaking of Svidur, I thought the one sage said that Svidur should avoid further mental conflicts? Us going with him to make sure the Neeran aren't close to accessing the main control room via maintainence passages would likely put him into contact with more Neeran and thus let out the soldier that is buried inside his mind?
>>
>>2226516
>We don't usually make a habit of handing out artifacts to those helping us out of greed rather than selflessness
To be fair, even if we weren't interested in any artifacts, Sonia's actions wouldn't have been selfless. Preventing the Neeran from accessing the secrets of the dyson sphere seems like something that well be incredibly helpful for the alliance in the long run. So yeah, selflessness is pretty much out of the window no matter how you turn the situation.

>However I suspect you might have helped even without an incentive.
The knights and the scientists probably would have, thought.
>>
>>2226516
>[ ] If it helps to win the war
"We lose here then my home is next. Profiting from the war is nice but if we lose then my family dies. I will not allow that."
>>
>>2226516
>[x] If it helps to win the war
>>
>>2226516
>I try to help those in dire need
We usually try to help if people are in a really bad spot.
>>
>>2226516
> [ ] I try to help those in need
> [ ] Reward please!

We know who we are. We're greedy but not miserly and while we're willing to help for free we fucking love getting paid. And if we can help someone AND get paid that's like a double win. We'll use this to help our war too which is like a triple win.
>>
>>2226568
Amen brother. Couldn't have said it better myself.
>>
I just wanna say, it's been 3? 4? years and we finally got Svidur back and I can hardly believe it.
>>
>>2226568
So just go with this then?
>>
>>2226640
Sounds about right. Sonia does want to do right for herself. Sonia is also greed incarnate.
>>
"I'm not afraid of helping people out for free, but if I can do that and get paid? Best thing ever. Plus then I can use the money to help other people or the war effort. Wins all around."

"That's certainly a healthier way of looking at the world than some I've seen. Your scientists are examining a few of the artifacts we've brought along. Come, let us talk on the way."

Heading for a nearby lift Einridi continues talking.

"While you were occupied with matters on the surface I was working with Svidur prior to their being placed back in stasis. A Neeran body is not meant to handle such raw power as the Commandos you described did. It can be done for short duration but even then there are consequences. As a result of being exposed to these levels for years our healing artifacts now have a degenerative effect on his physiology. Even were he to use one on another person it would cause him harm."

"Why is that exactly?"

"Different paths can have a tremendous impact on Neeran's physical development. It's a question of body and mind. The Empire's paths focus more on the body while your Light Neeran focus more on improving the mind. Probably why they're killing each other again. Long ago the two sides were not so different but since then they've diverged further and further from each other. Because of this Light Neeran have access to a potential power at least four times greater than those from the Empire."

"You're talking about that biological fusion reactor you guys have right?"

"We refer to as our heart's heart, though I don't know what the others call it these days. The one whose body Svidur now inhabits had this organ removed and placed in a clone. It killed the population of a city ship, including itself, while the original waited in stasis."

>What say?
>>
>>2226775
>It killed the population of a city ship, including itself, while the original waited in stasis.

Uh wat.
>>
>>2226775

I guess then it's to late to get said organ back and have it placed in this body to stabilize it?

Also, this sounds like the Yin-Yang argument somewhat to me. If both were to rejoin I'm sure the Neeran race would become super strong. Stronger than they are currently that is.
>>
>>2226775
Why do the two Neeran sides hate each other so much? Slaughtering everybody on a city ship and then using their organs to kill even more of them goes far beyond what most societies I've seen would consider tolerable unless they are threatened with complete extinction.
>>
>>2226775
Will Svidur be able to survive in his new body or do we need to get him a new one?

>>2226802
This

When do we get our own organ so we to can have awesome Neeran powers?

>Probably why they're killing each other again.
Again? When was the last time?
>>
>>2226775
So how many years does Svidur have left?
It also sounds like they've been at each others throats for millennia and it sounds like exterminating one side wouldn't resolve the problem.
>>
"I'll be honest, some of that went over my head."

Einridi looks at you then glances upwards. Any other alien species would probably have made a joke about you being too short but the Neeran tries their best to break it down for you.

"Your enemy determined how to perform a suicide attack using the neural network of an isolationist city ship to kill its crew. As a telepathic species it functions much like a communications grid would for you but more instantaneous. Svidur mentioned trying to warn you through the network. It seems even then the Commando was having difficulty containing his stolen memories and personality."

"Wait! Are you saying Svidur was already dead by the time I made it aboard?"

"It would seem so. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately depending on your view, those from the ruling caste that now leads the Empire seems to be far too selfish. They have little interest in sacrificing their own lives to ensure victory, only other people's or races.
But entrusting such a dangerous technique to another Neeran would be far to dangerous a prospect. Especially when those in positions of power seem to be in danger of being stepped on by others. Someone else might figure out how to do a better job of it and be promoted instead."

"So they needed a clone." you conclude. "No risking death but keeping anyone else from getting their secret. I thought the Empire didn't use cloning on Neeran for some reason?"

"The Heart's heart of a Neeran clone would only be as strong as a baby. It takes centuries to properly mature. Theirs had to be removed and implanted into the clone to give them the necessary power. Certainly no one else would volunteer. Perhaps they intended to take it back from the dead clone if possible?
In either event they were far too busy and what they took from our kin were far more powerful."

Einridi stops and leans against a wall for support. "My apologies, I thought I was going to be ill. Svidur and I exchanged information only briefly but those deaths are still far too real."

Once the caretaker has recovered you ask the inevitable question.
"Why are they doing this? Why do the two Neeran sides hate each other so much?"

"The isolationists were perfectly willing to remaining in hiding, left alone. The leadership of the Empire, a small number of them to be sure, want power. Some time ago they fell to infighting. Killing each other over disputes, or to determine position. Eventually some victors began to take the Heart's heart of their fallen opponent and it made them more powerful. Almost unquestionably so.
Try to imagine it, having the ability to reach out across a room and snap an enemy's neck with but a thought. Or to make them become confused and lose all sense of reality. And to get it all that would be required is that you kill someone. Perhaps not even someone you know.
Would you do it? And if not can you say that others wouldn't kill for that power?"
>>
>>2226948
"If you discovered another House to be weaker than yours, one with which your relations were already poor, would your leadership prefer to go to war with them, or allow your nobles to continue killing each other?"

Well shit,is this is why WH40K has daemons that mind raep people who mess around with the warp to much? Aside from its grimderpness.

>>2226954
I would like to think, at the worst or House might do is leave an enemy House to die on a vine with no allies to support them. At our best, look at what we did with house Erid. They were a former enemy to houses Jerik and Dremane, but they cut that shit out for one reason or another. And over the last decade relations stabalized until the civil war. Where they tried to cripple our house through sabotauge and we went to war with them and absorbed their house into ours. I think that would go for a best case scenario.
>>
>>2226954
Conquering the other House would only be a temporary solution. As soon as the war is over, the nobles would start killing each other anew. The flaws that keep tearing the society apart are still there...

"It sounds like exterminating one side wouldn't resolve the problem." you note.

"No it certainly will not. The Empire's leadership would have to be removed and their society reinvent itself before the two sides attempt to make peace. It could be forced on them I suppose. Your Alliance is gaining in strength. Of course it wouldn't take much for the various Factions to tear it apart again."

That's the truth. If the Dominion isn't busy fighting itself when this is over the Factions very much could be. You've certainly seen the various sides preparing with that eventuality in mind.

"Wait, you said they're killing each other again. When was the last time?"

"During the schism when they split along their respective ideologies they fought for a very long time. The isolationists lost as a result of being out numbered and eventually fled. The Empire of the time warned them never to return but otherwise were happy enough to let them leave. Magnanimous in their victory, or at least their leadership was in those days."

Moving on you express your concern for Svidur's health.
"Will Svidur be able to survive in his new body or do we need to get him a new one?"

"He has no other choice but to attempt to survive in it. Some of the excess organs can be removed. I'm sure your Alliance will be able to find uses for them. As for longevity only time will tell. He is living quite literally on borrowed time."

That's not ideal but it's the best that can be done you suppose.

Trying not to smirk you manage to ask your next question with a straight face.
"When do I get my own organ so I can have awesome Neeran powers?"
"You do not."
Dammit.

Einridi halts at the door to the briefing room.
"That doesn't mean your distant descendants might not be so blessed. But there are more concerning matters to discuss before we enter."

"Wh- bu- I-" you sputter.

"The other matter Svidur warned of, that there could be a roundabout route into control systems of the sphere may have some truth to it."

"So, the threat is a real one?"

"Potentially. I'm reluctant to share this with too many others as I'm not sure how many of your expedition may be trustworthy."

So, Sonia can just freeze herself and loot other humans' super powers in a thousand years? Neat.
>>
"Let's keep this to ourselves for the moment."
"Very well. There are a few places the Empire may have gained access to that could possibly allow them to reach the needed access spaces beneath the surface of the sphere. It's conceivable they could then assemble small repulsor vehicles to follow the sphere's power distribution grid, drawing enough power to remain operational.
Fortunately it wouldn't be terribly fast. Too fast and it might set off defenses intended to protect against breaches of the outer shell. Even with that limit in place they could still reach systems at the poles within a human's lifetime."

"How long will that take?"
"Roughly forty of your years."
"So we have time."

"For now but we don't have any way of confirming their progress. We could certainly get people there first using the sphere's transit system but we fear the empire might detect its activation. That might very well give them clues to find a shorter way in."

That has the potential to become a catch 22.

"Is there another way into the control room or systems?"

"Possibly, but it is hazardous and might cost you your ship. I only know of it because of your questions about an alternate way out of the sphere. There is a gap in the center of either pole's stellar control arrays that might be another gate but they're both sealed and may have been damaged long ago."

Interesting. Probably not the way you want to be leaving the sphere this time.

Entering the briefing room a few of the scientists are still going over compiled data while Rhistel Taraman has a display up showing the lightning storm your team unleashed.

"Was it supposed to be that powerful?" he asks once he notices you and Einridi.
Several others also look up to find out what the answer is.

"It's roughly as powerful as intended. Not necessarily as compact but powerful enough to prevent most unshielded craft from approach."

"What about the civilians?" Rufaro is quick to ask.

"I can only hope the majority had enough time to flee. If not it is regretable, but any weaker a storm and the Empire might have found a way to disarm the system before it reached full power."

Einridi turns back to you. "What artifact -if any- would you prefer in return for the services you've rendered Viscount Reynard?"

"Like a pocket universe? I've read of such things. Conceivably the sphere builders may have done work on such technology though it would have been done far from here as it can be rather unstable."

The Rovinar member of the science team laughs and points in Alam's direction.
"That's why the Terrans lost-"
"Esibe! Shut it!" The human woman quickly snaps.
>>
Probably going to survey it seems. First one of the year.

With the artifact choosing (mostly) out of the way people are wondering what your plans are for the rest of the mission. Caretakers will be returning to the surface except for the designated ambassador. You have retired marines and their families to send back to the homeworlds. Svidur probably needs to be taken to a secure Alliance facility and debriefed.

Then there's the issue of the local Neeran commander you need to discuss with Alliance Intel. Gradually weakening their political position is slowly stripping away elements of their fleet rather than allowing them to strike a target all at once. What the Alliance still holds in this galaxy has been hard pressed from what you've read. The last thing they need right now is a Command ship plus escort fleet showing up to a fight.

There are still issues here to look into but the question is becoming can you risk it at the moment?

>What are your plans?
Remain here and continue to investigate? Head back to Alliance Territory? Anything in between?
>>
>>2228290

I feel like we should head back to FA space. Get them up to date on what we have learned and what we have been doing. Then do our best to pull as many strings as we can to ready several raiding fleets. To draw away the Neeran fleet stationed here. So we can have more stealth/ recon teams sent in to explore those maintenance tunnels.

Svidur mentioned that the Neeran Commander here has teams crawling through the maintenance tunnels and are nearing the command center. If we were to go that way it would be a likely one way trip since it would take weeks if not months to check on those leads.

However Einridi says it would take them several years at the rate they are going to reach it. We could use the tram system to get there first, but it would alert all the Neeran here to our intentions.

There's no way to be sure the Empire hasn't found a faster way until its too late. On the other hand taking a shortcut to get there first might alert them to said short cut.

The locals could also use assistance with other acts of resistance. It's hard to do hit and fade when your enemy has space ships and you don't. Though that drastically increases the odds of the enemy figuring out a cloaked ship is present.

I would suggest the ship leaves to deliver the people we've picked up to the Alliance, while we leave some help for the caretakers behind. Sonia could probably help more if she came back to friendly lines and drummed up some support within the Dominion to strengthen the FA forces still present in the region. I'm not sure if a renewed offensive would do more harm than good, so we should probably speak with the locals about it.

Another thing - would the caretakers be able to assess Sayadov's loyalty accurately? We could give the sword he's after to the caretakers, and once they consider his debt settled, they let him go or we'll pick him up. It would allow us to keep that guy away from Dominion politics while also giving him the chance to pick up some artifacts and gain an honorable reputation that would allow him to start over. Only if he's interested, of course.

We could leave behind:
-Sphere specific equipment
-LST and shuttle
-Ilya and the Knights from the same world wanted an epic quest and we haven't really utilized them so far. Maybe they would be interested in helping the locals? If people from our forces want to stay, allow them to.

Things to ask for:
-Could they get us some blood and DNA samples from the local unaltered Hune population?
-Could they send some of their Human allies to get copies of the logs from the Human fleet that arrived here in the past?
-Would any of the external locations they keep mentioning be worth visiting?
-We should ask if they would be interested in establishing diplomatic relations with the Watchers. Considering how far these guys travel, they could help locate species who need to be relocated to the sphere.
-Can they get us the last coordinates of the city ship the caretakers used to have?
-Can they provide any help for the Kythera contact fleets?
-If they're willing to provide us with the dimensions of their internal pathways, we could have a simple combat vehicle running on a combustion engine developed and bring it next time we come here. The caretakers could provide attachable armor plates made from the same material as their shield armor to make it mostly impervious to damage, even from infantry plasma weapons.

"If you were to leave them behind we could provide Helium 3 for your landing support transport."

"That's the good stuff, where are you getting that?" You ask.

The Caretaker points at the nearest hologram of the sphere's star. "Wind."

>>2229981

"Only if they were to offer."

"Ideally? Maybe even the chance to make a fortune with the things you might earn for your help if you choose to stay."

I'd like to hear other players on this but I have no realistic idea what else to do with this guy. If we know he won't sell out to the empire, this could be a decent chance for him. We'd at least get him away from the dominion for a decent stretch of time.

You hold up your gauntlet. "You saw enough in the capital or after to know these aren't just pretty toys."

"Fine. Do it." He tells you and Einridi.

The caretaker places a palm to Sayadov's forehead and closes his eyes in concentration. He looks rather uncomfortable for a few moments then withdraws his hand and steps away.

"That is an insidious device within his head. I would not think it within your character to have such an implant put in someone."

You reply that you didn't come up with the Ruling House's terms of parole following the fighting in the capital. It's still probably better than killing off thousands of personnel and weakening the Dominion further.

Einridi frowns. "I suppose I have not faced such problems. In your position I cant say I would not be forced to enact similar measures to preserve life. To answer your question this man will fulfill their oath to you, no matter how angry he might be over being placed in such a position."

Some good news you guess.

A majority favor returning to Alliance space at this time, if only to drop off people and resupply before returning.

"As long as we're not going to be stuck here for ten years." Jokes one of your snipers.
This draws a few nervous chuckles from everyone present.

"We will come back for you." you stress. "Just be aware of the risks."

Enough people sign up to skeleton crew the ships plus two squads of your guard. Ilya is considering but is concerned.

Ilya and the others decide to send the shield back along with one of their number.

You, Velari and Rufaro each get your reward before the Caretaker departs. Each of your bodyguards decide to take a shield, figuring there's the least that could go wrong there. You on the other hand pick up a "Singing Sword."
It's a bit bigger than your usual choice of melee weapons but you could get used to it.

"Such as?"
"Two things, antimatter warheads-"
That one's understandable.

"And Veckron weapons. We don't know what effect they would have on the sphere if there were an accident."

They're certainly not making this easy and you can't really promise that. At the end of the day it's the Alliance Admiralty's call.

Einridi wishes you luck then departs aboard the LST.

Arron has been keeping an eye out for ways out of the sphere.

"That lightning storm you cooked up really drew a lot of attention. One of the heavy cruisers have been relocated, probably to get better readings. That gives us a bit of an opening, but there's no way to be sure someone outside wont be keeping and eye on the less guarded doors."

It seems the question is once again to risk taking the less guarded doors and hoping that there is no one on the other side, or follow an enemy ship when it's passing through one of the more heavily trafficked ones.

"We at least know where the command ship should be located. The busiest gates are those closest to it. That's been fairly consistent."

Would it be a decent idea for Eldal to stay behind? He mentioned he'd like to avoid his government for a longer period of time, and the sphere seems like a good place to do that.
>>
I can't believe we didn't ask but what if some caretakers were rogue and handing equipment to the Neeran in exchange for not poking around with the DS too much? What if Einridi was just a smokescreen? The whole lightning mission just a sham to justify giving us a shiny bead to get us out of their hair? Am I too paranoid? Why did Svidur's letter mention reaching the control room when he could have just mentioned contacting a caretaker?
>>
"Stick to the quiet gates."

You'll be relying on luck for this one. True you could hang around and wait for the Caretakers to get back to you with data from external sensors but that's time you could be out getting more help.

Keeping engine power low for most of the flight to avoid detection it takes three days to cross the sphere to the gate Arron wants. It gives you time to practice with the new sword.

The Knight returning to Thule's Prism is able to give you a few pointers and act as a sparring partner. Arif Sayadov would have probably been a good alternate choice but he eventually volunteered to remain behind with the LST. By the time the ship approaches the gate you've got the hang of the basics with it.

"It's no master sword but it should provide a few extra tricks."
"Master sword? What's that?" asks Rufaro.
"Never mind. How's the shield?"

Your bodyguard glances down at the folded device strapped to her forearm.
"I haven't gotten the hang of quickly deploying yet like the Knights do."

You've seen the knights quickly deploy their shields with a particular flourish that seems to help whip the plates into position faster.

"They've been practicing with replicas all their lives." you point out.

"And they manage to make it look really cool at the same time!"
"Ella, priorities. Also don't let any of them hear you say that, they'll probably just act smug about it."

Stepping onto the bridge you take one of the jump seats as Arron begins final approach to the gate.
"No enemy traffic within visual range on this side. Coms, trigger the gate."

"I've got a bad feeling about this." mutters the communications officer.

The gate opens automatically and Arron wastes no time getting through it. Sensors immediately detect two enemy ships nearby, but neither of them seem to be in a position to have seen the doors opening.

"It looks like they just flew past a few minutes ago." Arron reports.
"Now the question is, did you want to signal for allied ships to jump into the area to mask our FTL jump?"

[ ] Lowest FTL speed should be enough to mask it

>>
>>2232660

Have our ship go to maximum stealth and slowly do our best to get as far away from the sphere as possible.

Then send a quick, discreet transmission to FA they we have left the sphere and will be returning to FA space shortly. And to prepare any defenses should we have any Empire Neeran following us. Maybe even going so far as to use a method we used earlier during the Dominion Civil War to have it be a delayed message from a single use satellite. To give us some distance from it in case the Neeran intercept or detect the message.
>>

"Take us far enough out of the system on sublight that it will be hard to detect our jump. Linda?"

"I know, I know, use the lowest FTL settings possible when we jump. I'm going to talk to the engineers about modifying the geometry of our drive field to make it even hard to detect. Think that will be worth some bonus pay?"

"Maybe from House R&D. I'm already paying you a fortune." you remind her.

Two days at sublight give Linda and the engineers time to tinker with the drives. She's picked up a lot of info while off working for the Navigators. Technically nothing she's sharing is too heavily classified but she's seen enough application of these special systems to know what should work better than others.

"So the FTL isn't going to blow up in our face when we turn it on?" you ask.
"No? Do you think I'd be on this ship if I thought that might happen?"

You shrug noncommittally causing Linda to sigh in annoyance.
"Well I wouldn't. The drive should work, I'm just not sure how well it will adjust its detectability."

"If it doesn't?"

"Then it should increase the drive efficiency instead? Look, either way it will operate at a lower output."

Just in case Arron adjusts the course of the ship so that if you are detected it will look like a long range spy probe passing by the system at right angles. When Arron jumps the drive does seem to be emitting a less powerful drive flare. Linda immediately starts clapping.
"Yes! It even worked!"

"Don't sound too surprised." you tell her.

Setting course for the nearest Alliance position it takes a few days to navigate through contested territory and a few dense star clusters. Eventually you arrive in friendly territory. Arron launches a stealth com relay probe to raise Alliance intel without giving away your position in system.

"What are we telling them? That we have a captured enemy commando we've mind hijacked?"
>>
>>2233494
"Tell them we've subdued the Neeran city ship commando and also rescued Svidur."
>>
>>2233494

>>

If I'm not to late to suggest something. Have the alliance ready their best Neeran shrinks. And a representative from the Isolationist Neeran present. Also that we have civilians that need safe lodging until we can bring them home to J-D space. Include the we have an ambasador from the sphere's caretakers.
>>
You inform Intel you've subdued a high profile Neeran Commando as well as rescuing Svidur. After this you rattle off a list of personnel you'll require, including an isolationist representative and a Neeran psych.
"We'll also need transport for rescued civilians."

It takes a few minutes for them to get back to you with a secure rendezvous location.

"Viscount, I'm afraid that you'll need to return to a site near the Navigator station. Due to ongoing activity in your area we don't have anything nearby secure enough for what you're asking."

If that's where we have to go then so be it. It'll be another two or three days at high FTL speeds to cross the cluster. Everyone will probably be happy to get off the ship for awhile after that.

"Are we good for fuel?" you ask Arron.

"We'll be fine. Just above our reserve levels by the time we get there."

Once away from the galaxy Linda punches the FTL up to maximum speed. You're a little concerned she's going to keep messing with the drive field geometry while in flight but to your relief she lays off it.

"What? I'm not going to mess with the FTL during a long jump."
"Just- uh, good."
"I had a couple weeks to work on the new calculations while you were running around the surface of the sphere. It's not like I pulled those calculations out of my ass."

Dropping out of FTL a few hundred light years from the gate you make contact with intel again to confirm the coordinates. They confirm the name numbers as before and siin you're making a much shorter jump to what should be the location of an Alliance interrogation facility.

Returning to real space you soon pick up a station with protected ship docks intended for cloaked vessels. A Viscount heavy cruiser is nearby as are a number of Krath and Rovinar ships.

"Guess this place is high security. Every one of those ships has their weapons armed." Arron notices.

"Signal that we're coming in to dock."
"Got it."

One of the bays open and Arron brings the ship around towards it. Before you enter sensors reports ships dropping out of FTL nearby.

"Four Heron class mediums and two Abyssal class grav wells. One of them is powering up their gravity generators."

If the civilians from the research society have some kind of secret handshake we can try to make sure this isn't some kind of trap, I'd love to hear about it right now. Or has anybody listened to space radio to hear if the FA fractured or some other apocalyptic event occurred?
>>
"I'm sure they have a good reason to be here. Arron, slow our approach but don't stop."

"Got it."

Bringing Hidden Dagger in Arron keeps it nice and slow. It doesn't look like any of the other ships present are responding to the new arrival. That's mostly reassuring. Once inside the dock the coms officer signals for the bay doors to be closed. A few seconds later the armored slabs of metal are closed and locked down.

Once the cloak has been deactivated docking arms extend inwards from all sides and crews get to work hooking up power umbilicals and fuel lines.

"This is dock control. Please complete your your engine power down and perform a complete shut down of all main reactors."

"Copy that."

"All personnel aboard be advised your ship is under temporary quarantine."

About what you figured with everything going on.
It takes a few minutes after the reactors are offline before crews actually approach the ship. A heavily armed and armored Alliance boarding team along with a number of Light Neeran personnel approach the starboard docking hatch.

"We're requesting to speak with your Neeran contingent before we can arrange for the prisoner transfer."

You tell Sam and Dave to get down there and let them know about Svidur. hopefully that should clear things up a bit. Their meeting seems to go well enough. Soon the boarding team are able to move the stasis pod Svidur is being held in to a more secure location aboard the station. After that the Alliance insists on performing a complete physical on the entire crew.

Neeran are already capable of being dangerous enough with their little mind games. We're not going to underestimate someone hopped up on dead people's power cells or however that works."

"We've had him in stasis. They were only out for a short time." you explain.

"According to you. We need to verify that and if anyone tries to escape that heavy cruiser has orders to fire on this facility. It wouldn't take much convincing from what I hear. The Light Neeran leader Baldr is supposed to be aboard."

"What if somebody manages to escape and manages to make it look like somebody is trying to when they're already gone? You'll destroy the facility and nobody will ever find out that somebody actually managed to escape!"

Well, it's not like we have much of a choice, it seems. Maybe spend the time talking to Estavan Risto? I think we've never spoken to our second Krath. And how is the bio armor doing, can they talk to it?

"Fine, do the damn physicals, but I better get all of my crew members back, including the civilians. No random disappearances. I've put up with enough of that in my career already."

"Alright, we'll make sure everyone gets back safe and sound."

Although a low ranking officer the person you talked to is as good as his word. All of you get through your physicals without incident. The children had the usual minor issues but those were taken care of easily enough.

Debriefings take a little longer. Sergeant Shelby spends the better part of two days talking to Alliance and later House J-D personnel. She and the others are due to be shipped out to the nav station and from there will catch a trip back home aboard a ship from your company.
Once communications restrictions are lifted you send a message to Count Jerik requesting Shelby be Knighted and offering to provide land on Rioja.

"That we'll get dragged into the political bullshit and infighting from back home. Or worse, get sent back out here on some wild goose chase now that your mission has been successful.
Then there's the problem of getting our kids acclimatized to an entirely different tech level. We really don't have any shortage of things to worry over."

"Except for money. You'll be well set."

"At least we managed to skip the Dominion's civil war. That sounds like it was a nightmare."

"It really was." you agree.

With the survivors away you spend more time discussing your debriefing with Alliance Intel personnel on the base. Svidur's debriefing is apparently providing plenty of valuable information though it tends to be rather out of date. They're considering potential operations and means to further isolate the Neeran commander who has control of the sphere.

The commander's actual name remains unknown. For the moment they've been given the code name GIRISHA. Intel has been made aware of numerous attacks carried out by Neeran infiltrators working for Girisha that almost seem to be unrelated to the larger war effort.

"They seem to be targeting certain personnel for assassination though we've yet to determine a pattern. In other cases the infiltrators have broken of from these side missions in order to assist local Neeran forces in larger attacks.
We suspect there may be some dissension among their command structure. Not all of these infiltrators may be on board with the orders they're getting."

What are your plans? Return to the sphere with a larger force, or try to work on means of sabotaging the enemy commander?
>>

>That we'll get dragged into the political bullshit and infighting from back home.

Salvaging the caretakers lost city ship. I'm sure Svidur has a theory where it might have ended up.
That's a good question. What's the overall situation? How long have we been gone?
>>
>>2234278

I'd like to start sabotaging the enemy commander. Weakening their forces present there at the sphere. If intel has any well intel on locations or suggestions we can go off of to start drawing away at their power base so that we can eventually get a FA fleet to come back to the sphere and remove the Neeran commander there.

It is mid 4035. You've been gone maybe 3 months at most. More ships and crews from the Dominion are making their way to the front, but there wont be a big push until early 4036 at best. It looks like people back home are taking the advice of the new Ruling House and working to rebuild infrastructure and industry in preparation for later.

There have been a few short lived conflicts between minor Houses wanting to settle things now that they're no longer within the spheres of influence of destroyed Houses. Damage has been kept to a minimum and they've since resumed reconstruction efforts.

Updated map.

There are no habitable systems near the sphere for some distance. At least none that wouldn't require more lengthy terraforming.
The nearby system that you previously fought to defend was successfully evacuated of all civilians. The Neeran did not directly assault it again for some time. Surrounding systems were overrun first and, with its supply lines cut, all remaining Alliance forces were eventually withdrawn.
The Shallans did make sure to leave plenty of booby traps behind in the evacuated cities. Included among them were some fake radiation sources to look like fission bombs were put in place. Or they were supposed to be fake. The Shallan military government hasn't been above using salted nukes in areas where they're planning a retreat.

They've completed the third iteration of their holographic cooling system which better works with their siege guns.

The Alliance is scheduled to begin conducting tests of Republic heavy plasma cannons with similar Helios upgrades any day now. It's hoped the cooling systems will be finalized and mass production can begin before the end of the year.

Provided the program remains on schedule the Alliance could have the fleet upgraded with better plasma weapons within 3 years.

Well I guess we have our time window in which to weaken the Neeran presence around the Sphere enough to entice an FA fleet to come deal with the Neeran presence there so we can get back to salvaging the sphere for ourselves.

What is a Viscount heavy cruiser?
>>
>>2234456
>Is the guy in charge of all forces in this galaxy?
Unfortunately no. Two other fleet commanders are currently active though their forces are spread across most of the galaxy. Theoretically Girisha still out ranks both of them and could commandeer their forces. Doing that would probably cause a severe backlash though.

>The city ship stationed at the sphere was receiving updated weaponry, do we have any idea if they're produced nearby?
Command ships are effectively scaled up city ships. They have their own manufacturing capability along with civilian populations. On board manufacturing would require raw materials not present in the Sphere's system. There are probably mining operations in the surrounding systems.

Most of the time their manufacturing seems to be used to construct other bases, shipyards and support facilities. So any combination of bases could be nearby. They've had years to work on them.

Say, space mines exist in H&D, right? And the sphere doesn't take damage from anything short of v-torps and anti matter. Would a minefield like the one in DS9 make sense to keep the largest ships away from the sphere?
>>
>>2234490
>Cooling system
>Has work begun on smaller versions?
Yes. They're not advancing quite as quickly since the smaller weapons have less trouble and thus there is less immediate demand.

>>2234502

It's been 4-5 months since the Dominion agreed to work on the program. It will take time.

>>2234509
>What is a Viscount heavy cruiser?
One of the alternate heavy cruiser ideas proposed for the Surakeh shipyard awhile back. The current version is a Faction built heavy intended primarily for sale to the Light Neeran fleet. At the time it was designed the Isolationists were not fully backing Baldr yet and they were in desperate need of ships.

>>2234551
>Say, space mines exist in H&D, right?
Indeed.avi
House J-D makes use of several class of minelayers. Your fleet used high yield antimatter mines to good effect during the civil war. Destroying much salvage in the process.

>Would a minefield like the one in DS9 make sense to keep the largest ships away from the sphere?
Self replicating mines are rather outside your tech level.

While cloaked mines might work to keep ships away from the sphere it would take time to get enough into the area to threaten multiple Neeran Supers. It's doubtful you could threaten the command ship with them, but it might be possible to force them to keep their shields up, or operate slightly farther away from the sphere itself. Basically it would only be an annoyance, but that in itself could be useful.
>>
>>2234603
>Your fleet used high yield antimatter mines to good effect during the civil war.
We did learn from that mistake. I hope.

>Basically it would only be an annoyance
That would still be great. The more we annoy that commander without providing a target to retaliate against, the more mistake he'll be make. Or at least I hope so.

>I'd like to start sabotaging the enemy commander. Weakening their forces present there at the sphere. If intel has any well intel on locations or suggestions we can go off of to start drawing away at their power base so that we can eventually get a FA fleet to come back to the sphere and remove the Neeran commander there.
They have location data of a number of facilities in nearby systems, but it isn't the most up to date. It should still help.

>>2234622
>The more we annoy that commander without providing a target to retaliate against, the more mistake he'll be make. Or at least I hope so.
Cloaked minelayers are not terribly common and those at the front are presently in use on what are considered higher priority assignments. Your best best would be to contact the House and ask them to send you a few of the newer ships. At the front the Alliance could see about borrowing newer cloaks for them from the Rovinar. That would give you minelaying capacity to spare.
They could also be outfitted to carry additional stealth LST's giving you more vehicles to work for operations inside the sphere.

Final checkup question, everything going well on Rioja?
>>
>>2234819
Terraforming still on schedule. The people working on it are still unhappy with the accelerated schedule as it will mess with the ecosystem, but they're getting it done.

People anticipating you'd be out of contact for a year or more tried starting shit but were quickly shut down by the your people and the increasingly competent Governor's office. Far less incidents of corruption outside of accepted channels have been happening.

The heavy cruiser repair berth for the moon base is fully operational. It's being used to assist with the overhaul of an allied ship that was salvaged but never properly repaired.

The Francis Alfonso has returned to Rioja and started construction of Rioja's new civilian station. There were some delays in the homeworlds that prevented an earlier departure. This has set construction back by more than a month.

Also, wiki updated.

So let's see. There are a number of options open at this point. Some of them can be done together more easily, or perhaps in sequence. What was everyone thinking?

1) Intel route, try to disrupt Girisha's infiltrators
2) Raid outlying Neeran facilities in systems near the sphere
3) Cloaked Minelayer
4) Return to sphere with larger cloaked force

You can try, though the sphere's system does not possess a comet belt. You'd have to jump it in from elsewhere.

Can we combine these?

Ideally we seed fake asteroid observation outposts with mines, then have them "leak" signals. So the Neeran go charging in and suffer the mines (or at least the tedious job of clearing them) only to have the first asteroid base be an empty shell with rude comments left all over the place. Then it blows up.

Make like three of those. Just to piss them off.

Sabotage the main guns on the scorchers that hang around the sphere with a recon team? Land a team on the hull, then plant explosives on the joints that open when the main beam charges up, and set them to detonate once they try to open it. No idea if that's actually feasible but the caretakers seemed especially worried about those ships.

I'd also love to get some input on the whole situation from Svidur and Baldr before we commit to any plans. Maybe their people have some resources available that could help but Sonia doesn't know about?

Versa's little project is being readied for field testing. Of course the people who have told you this don't know what that project is or what it does but that's immaterial. They're hoping it will be ready for larger scale use shortly after the Dominion rejoins the war. Delays are a reality though.

I realised the other day that with Versa's project fleet commanders could basically become EVE Online capsuleers.

After a few days on the station you start to wonder about Svidur and how he's doing. Other duties keep you busy most of that time and it isn't until close to a week has gone by that you begin to ask questions. It doesn't take long to realise that you're being given the runaround.

Part of me thinks that could be a good thing. Then again, we have almost 15 years of EVE-Online to be a measuring stick of good or bad capsuleers can be.

On the topic of Svidur, have a little patience, but let it be known that you'd like to speak with him again in the near future. And then start to quietly make your own plans to 'accidentally' end up in the same area as him and talk to him if they refuse.

To become a capsuleer the character has to have extensive implants located in their spine and neck then kill themselves to wake up in the first clone body. They're homefree from that point.

The game has all kinds of quest lines about it and asking if the players are truly human anymore or just infomorphs in biological bodies.

>Technically you don't have to die to become a capsuleer. The current tutorial mission will absolutely kill your original though.
No, the lore necessitates the suicide of your human body. It's due to the brain of the clone bodies being slightly different to avoid a 'brain-lock' scenario as the Jovians called it, where after disconnecting from controlling a ship you become permanently paralysed. Allows more ease in implanting neural boosters too.

Speaking of implants, are there any upgrades for Sonia's eye implants available?

There used to be uncloned capsuleer pilots at the end of the gallente-caldari war. There were ways to reduce the chances of brain-lock to much lower numbers but as you say cloning was far more efficient.
So it's possible to be one without getting killed.

At any rate it's unlikely Versa's system will require specially cloned bodies to function at this time. Though that may make things easier on the fleet commander.

>Speaking of implants, are there any upgrades for Sonia's eye implants available?
There were a few the Foundation was working on before the war and were co-opted by Alliance R&D after it was found out about energy draining systems aboard enemy ships. They should be available now. Their capabilities and encryption are much better, but the options for stylistic changes are far more limited.

Deciding to have some patience you hold off threatening anyone but make it known that you would like to speak with Svidur before you deploy again. They can stop having to avoid your questions if they at least acknowledge that much.

It seems to get the message across. In a few more days you're called in to talk to a Krath officer working for Alliance Intel. They're still worried Svidur might not be entirely in control, though none of the Neeran have been able to find anything that would indicate that to be the case. Because of his knowledge and capability Svidur is still being treated as a potential security threat.

"Are you removing some of the spare power organs?"

"Yes. We've completed two surgeries so far removing fourteen of them. That leaves only eight. The medics are planning to stop after removing two more. It's hoped by the Neeran specialists that should stabilize him."

"Well that's good news. What has Baldr said?"

The other officer frowns. "Baldr is not very happy about all of this."

"He wants him released sooner?"

"He considers his mentor and teacher to be long dead and this thing to be an affront to his memory. Apparently they still had some unfinished business when he died and Baldr took that a bit personally. He's refused any contact with Svidur on grounds that he could be a vector for assassination. Because of this he's requested that the Alliance send Svidur to a high security POW facility far from the front lines."

>What say?

"That's unfortunate. I think a POW facility is a little excessive given the circumstances, but I do agree with keeping him far away from danger. At least that's what the oldest Neeran we met recommended."

"The Alliance intends to do that for the time being. Priorities might change later. Maybe when we start more serious offensives they'll let him out?"

You try and puzzle through the available options.

From what the officer has learned about the Isolationists a teacher will usually share some of their memories with others they've taught before going their separate ways. Svidur was a bit more secretive about certain things than most. Combined with being away for long periods of time he didn't really share much with Baldr.

"Baldr is very accomplished among the Isolationists but much of that was done on their own without the help of a regular mentor."

"Have not heard of teleconfrences?"
"They're probably just not the same for those sort of people."

"I don't suppose the two of them just need two or three hundred years to cool off?"

The officer shrugs. "If you're fine with waiting that long Viscount."

"Not really. Maybe this one time an exceptional situation requires a shockingly mundane solution? We need to get them talking again at the very least, even if it's just via coms. It would be a starting point at least."

Just in case that proves difficult you offer to mediate between the two of them as a further effort to kick start things. You won't be causing any diplomatic incidents but that doesn't mean you'll sit here and let things idle.

Eventually this succeeds in getting the attention of Baldr and he contacts you over a secure channel. While still far from the hulking brutes that Empire Neeran appear to be, Baldr seems much more physically fit than either Sam or Dave.

You make the usual pleasantries of introduction, mentioning you once fought together in the major shipyard battle that crippled or killed three enemy command ships.
"I know who you are Viscount Reynard. Even then I knew you'd been given Svidur's artifacts instead of me but did not hold it against you. It's only made me work harder. I finally slew an enemy commander and took their staff.
I may not have all the wisdom of my mentor but I'm proving more than capable of leading my people through this war."

"And don't you want to find out what he thinks of your accomplishments?"

"That thing is not Svidur. It killed thousands of my people and can still do so again. As long as it is alive we are all in danger."

"Look, for better or worse, it has all of Svidur's memory and personality. It may have answers to questions you don't even know to ask yet. It's also not going to hurt you to turn on your screen and make a call. What are you going to lose?"

"It's a distraction from my duties, as are you."

"I don't know if you two had a fight or something before you parted company, but regardless of whatever body he's in this is the same old crazy space wizard I ran into in South Reach. You can either accept that or you can not. If you dont take the time to even talk to him remotely you're going to regret it the rest of your life. I understand yours are a bit longer than mine."

I built small model rockets when I was younger. I think only 2 actually flew. One of them blew apart when the charge to deploy the parachute didnt work properly. The other was damaged beyond repair on the ground by the problem child of my school year.
I stopped when it became impossible to acquire engines in my area for several years. My remaining 5 engines were all duds.
>>
>>2236817
I used to do the same with the model rockets, they were a lot of fun.

I had a similar problem with paying way too much for the motors so I began making my own. A lot of the fun now is optimising the mixtures and nozzle shape for best thrust. I built a ball mall for mixing the powders.

You can start with sugar and potassium nitrate as a basic fuel, dissolve them both in water in a 40/60 mixture then boil over low heat until you get a thick mixture. Shape into any kind of motor and you're good to go.
>>
You eventually get a chance to talk to Svidur after he's recovered from what should be the last round of surgery.

"I'll need to begin training soon. Determine the limits of this new body. I don't expect people around here will be particularly thrilled with that plan."

You don't think so either. For now though he's a good resource for bouncing a couple of your plans off of for ensuring the sphere is protected.

"I want to sabotage the Scorchers that are capable of threatening the sphere."

"Foolhardy. You would have better luck attacking it with shield piercing torpedoes in great numbers."

You reply that you're trying to develop plans that are not reliant upon the Alliance fleets liberating the surrounding territory. True, if you destroy the ships around the sphere more may be sent, but one thing at a time.

"Yes, its possible but I wouldn't recommend it. Their weapon operates in a number of different modes. In regular operation it's more than powerful enough to render a planet uninhabitable, you know this. One of them makes use of a micro wormhole connection to another location to produce a more powerful planet killing beam. This is what they use to actually destroy worlds they want to mine or turn into shipyards."

"What about the antimatter beam one of the caretakers mentioned?"
"There are antimatter generators aboard, but they're all too aware of the threat your Veckron weapons pose. They're only activated when necessary and are used like a normal beam weapon, firing from inside the heart of the ship. It wouldn't need the plasma arrays they normally use.
Not as powerful a weapon true, but again it's only for special circumstances."

"There must be a weakness. We could plant explosives in the joints of the folding sections."

"They've thought of that. Aside from getting a ship inside the hull to attack it from the interior its only true weakness is the wormhole generator. It's largely unchanged from the command capsule escape system aboard city ships. If you could sabotage it that has the potential to destroy the ship. But there is a catch."

"There always is." you accept.

"Sabotaging it is quite hard enough. The problem is that you'll need to get them to activate it, and they don't need to use the wormhole generator to make use of the antimatter weapons. So that is a little harder."

"Can't we just blow up the antimatter generators?"

Svidur shakes his head. "It wouldn't do enough damage and there are backup systems. You'd never get enough of them. I've already told the Alliance how to perform the sabotage necessary, just ask them."

That might be possible, but you still need to convince them to turn it on.

>What if we were to starve them of fuel?
That would take some time. The ship ships in orbit are not using any fuel at the moment. Even the heavy cruisers are largely operating on repulsors.

>Or maybe even sabotage the fuel supplies by doping them with something like Boron? What about sneaking sabotaged parts aboard?
You'd need to infiltrate fuel or manufacturing platforms they've set up in neighbouring systems. That might sabotage production of parts for new vehicles and equipment but its unlikely key systems aboard the big ships would be affected.

>>2236927
>What are his plans, if any, if the FA let him out under surveillance?
"I'll assist any way that I can. I'm most worried about preventing the Empire's other commando leaders from siezing control of the sphere though. That could be difficult judging by the restrictions they'll want to place on me."

"I have some ideas but I'm reluctant to get anyone's hopes up. Promise you wont get too excited about salvage? I know you were always one for finding new baubles."

You're not promising anything.

"There were supposed to be wormhole generators in the north and south poles that could allow larger ships in and out of the sphere. I suspect these are what the sphere builders used to travel elsewhere and collect species. They and the associated entrances were damaged long ago. I suspect there was a very good reason for that. For one it kept our city ships outside the sphere. That's all I know."

>Or any of the secondary sites the sphere builders had set up elsewhere?
"I was actually busy searching for signs of them when the issues with the pirate warlords began to flare up. I can't say I made much progress because of it."

"Extremely."

"That convertor artifact will probably help. You'll need more training with it but it's useless against conventional sensors and scanning techniques. Oh my word."

"What is it?"

"I've just found a distant memory. The Empire conduct hunts at times for sport, using special tracking devices on individuals, or was it escaped prisoners? He didn't know, it wasn't important to him. A hunt scanner would be able to find almost anyone, anywhere. Fortunately they're quite rare. This commander, Girisha, has access to them."

"So... we stay off the command ship?"

"I would suggest so."

This sounds like a really bad situation. We can't realistically touch the Scorcher or Command ship so I guess we're going to have to push the allied lines forward to drive them out.

I hit on the idea after discussing the possibility of the search for life inside subspace with a number of scientists long ago. A few of the Caretakers were not so appreciative of my poking around looking for evidence of this."

Maybe we could find something useful in the logs for the wormhole gates in the sphere? We'll have to get them to find the caretaker ship, they'll probably contain the locations of some of the secondary sites and might even provide clues on where the builders went or where they came from.

There are facilities in the surrounding systems. In addition there are believed to be small prospecting and mining fleets that are remaining fairly mobile.
The previous 2 cloaked ships to visit the sphere were asked to conduct a more thorough survey after completing their primary missions. Unfortunately both were discovered for one reason or another and forced to flee.
Someone failed to pass along a similar request for your expedition to attempt to do so if there was time. Possibly because it wasn't certain how long your team would be on site.

As previously stated your best bet would be to request Cloaked Battleships from your own House which would arrive in a month or two. These would give you much more flexibility in terms of their deployment window.

Small numbers of Rovinar warships can be made available for strike missions, though you would have a limited window in which they would be able to operate before being recalled. 12 weeks at a time maximum.

Available
2x Rovinar Battleships
and
12x silent hunters /or/ 8x Cruisers

As usual you can load up as many SP Torpedoes as your ships can carry, you just need to give back what's left after mission completion.

As it will take time to get minelayers here you start looking for other items and equipment that could be acquired on a shorter timescale. Tossing an asteroid covered in mines at the enemy fleet is still an option you'd really like to try and make work.
By asking around you eventually get in contact with the Shallan home fleet. Some of their larger bases make use of asteroid missiles to ram larger enemy ships that threaten them. It seems they've also experimented with attempts to hide them from casual observation. Minimalist stealth coatings built out of crushed asteroids with abnormally high carbon content make them slightly harder to detect. The only problem is that they tend to be restricted in use to the systems where they're needed.

That doesn't mean they can't be moved. The more common types can be relocated using a pair of Shallan Battlecruisers to jump them to other systems. That would provide the sort of mobility you're looking for. You could probably arrange to buy one and temporarily deploy the ships as part of a special operations requisition.

If there's only 1 of them it probably wouldn't breach the shields of a super but could cause quite a bit of damage to a heavy if struck.
Upgrading it with a better quality stealth coating would give it more time.

Odds are it would be spotted and cut to pieces before it could hit a command ship. They're too well guarded. It could act as a distraction so as to deploy mines though.

Rather than wait around for the ships to show up you've decided to start undermining the authority of the Neeran fleet commander Girisha. Intel has been speaking with the new ambassador that came with you from the Caretakers. With the added information they've provided intel now knows the names of several Generals and Admirals whose loyalty are questionable.

"You're to help get Krath infiltrators into place who will help ensure these lesser commanders break away from Girisha. If possible they'll try to actively turn these people against them, though that may be pushing it.
We also have false orders that need to be transmitted from inside enemy territory. Orders that will send ships into traps the fleet has waiting. With luck it will look like the other two fleet commanders are trying to get their rivals assets killed."

Two Neeran Shuttles and four Krath agents have been assigned to your ship. Once they're deployed your orders are to observe the results but otherwise not to interfere. The agents are to find their own way out if possible, you are not to conduct recovery if there is any chance of discovery.

"A number of potential target sites have been uploaded to your ship. How you get them there is up to you, though the shuttles should help as they have the most up to date security keys."

Any questions?
>>
>>2242508
May we get a map and target info, so we know which locations to target first for maximum effect?

Also, if these agents are successful, are there plans to extract them?

If by some fluke they are discovered or their mission back fires are we allowed stay on station to help recover them?

Is there anything we can do to help ensure that these operatives are able to complete their missions with minimal or reduced chances of being found out?

Can they survive atmospheric entry without equipment if the target is a planetary installation? If the target is a ship, do we have to get them on the ship or is it enough to get them on the hull? Is there a stealthy way to find them if they have to evacuate a ship by spacing themselves?

See:
>your orders are to observe the results but otherwise not to interfere. The agents are to find their own way out if possible, you are not to conduct recovery if there is any chance of discovery.

>Is there anything we can do to help ensure that these operatives are able to complete their missions with minimal or reduced chances of being found out?

>>2242534
>How long can they survive in disguise?
Classified, but you can ask Eldal when they're not around.
>Can they survive atmospheric entry without equipment if the target is a planetary installation?
Most of the targets should be mobile assets. The shuttles you have been provided with are capable of atmospheric entry.

>If the target is a ship, do we have to get them on the ship or is it enough to get them on the hull?
Ship, hull or docked station should be sufficient.
>Is there a stealthy way to find them if they have to evacuate a ship by spacing themselves?
No. Any sort of locator beacon could give away their identity.

>>2242542
>Can we have any Krath for our side project inside the sphere?
Not at this time.

>>2241371

Can they tell us what these reasons were? If we're going to use Rovinar ships and they're easily detected by the enemy under certain conditions, we kinda need to know.
>>
>>2242571
The first one, an Excalibur class ship, attempted recovery of assets from the surface of the sphere. They were successful but because of the size of the enemy response they were unable to evade incoming fire. This damaged their cloak and they were forced to run for it.

The second was a Rovinar ship but carried no Neeran aboard. They got a bit too close to an enemy ship and were detected.

Control of the regions highlighted in dark red are currently being contested between the Neeran Fleet commanders. Girisha controls them at present but the other commanders believe the sectors should belong to them. For the time being the fleets based at each of the 8 locations are loyal. As long as it stays that way Girisha will be able to maintain control.

>1 & 2)
Local commanders based here are among the most loyal and would be hardest for the infiltrators to subvert. If they were successful it would cause a more serious loss of standing.

1) Heavy Carrier fleet base
At least two heavy carriers are in dock at any given time. The base may service as many as 5 ships, though it's difficult to be certain.

2) Heavy Cruiser Squadron
A trio of heavy cruisers are based here ready to act as a quick reaction force. Intel believes one of them have improved long range sensors

3) Industrial Base
A manufacturing center captured before the industry could be evacuated or sabotaged. It provides Faction and Neeran tech based war materiel to both Girisha and one of their rivals. There have already been attempts to wrest control of the planet from Girisha.

4) Ground forces staging base
An important rally point that is often used for surface exercises. Loss of the local commander would be quickly noticed.

5) Light Corvette Carrier Fleet
A large chunk of Girisha's main front line fighting forces are based here. Corvettes are massed here by the thousands along with the Smaller carriers. It unknown how much of a dent deploying here would make in the numbers but if some defect to another commander more may follow.

6) Patrol base
This base and its commander are responsible for patrolling the trade lanes that connect the more distant elements of Girisha's territory.

7) Super heavy shipyard
A number of commanders are based here, ready to take command of newly produced warships. Having one of them turn would not be terribly surprising. It would still be a blow to Girisha's prestige. Getting in would be complicated but not really any harder than other missions you've been on.

8) Shallan auxiliary fleet base
Shallan personnel recruited by the Neeran are based here. It's the main base for those under Girisha's command. Attempted deserters are frequently shot. Getting your people in would be relatively simple as would stealing warships.
This base could be targeted separately from the infiltration missions.

To increase the likelihood of infiltration attempts succeeding it is recommended that 2 infiltrators be deployed together. This is a recommendation, you don't have to follow it.

Which bases/commanders did you want to target and with how many infiltrators?

Loading up the ship you set course for enemy territory once more. A few days later you once again enter the galaxy home to the dyson sphere, but much closer to the galactic core. Arron and Linda spend the next few days expertly thrading through enemy positions, past patrols and sensor arrays.

Arriving in the target system the sensors detect plenty of Neeran a Shallan built warships present. By the looks of things all of the Shallan built ships are probably salvaged from other battle sites, but you cant rule out the possibility there might be a captured shipyard supplying them.

A good sized Neeran station is in orbit with some additional sections that may belong to whatever orbital industry was originally here. A civilian station is present at the L5 Lagrange point along with two wings of attack ships that are performing exercises. Mining operations are also present in system and seem to send shipments in to the planet and station at regular intervals. Likewise there are shuttle flights between the civilian station and the planet.

"How good are the sensors?"

"They're good, but they don't have a high power detection net up that would be necessary to get through our cloak."

Probably counting on the Neeran present to detect cloaked ships their sensors cant. Sam and Dave are both ready to help provide cover on that front.

"Where are we dropping the infiltrators sir?"
>>
>>2243152

How is enemy comms traffic? Can we intercept general broadcast information, so we can get a general idea what is happening in the system at the moment? Troop/ ship movements, ships docking/ undocking or orders for ships to be sent out? Anything of use that we can intercept and bring back to alliance command and give to our infiltrators, should they need the extra intel to complete their assignments.

Also, what are the status of the ships around the planet? Any of them look like they've been in combat recently? Or are preparing to head out on patrol or out to the front?

As for deploying our infiltrators. I'd say get them in via the civilian station. Plenty of people there for them to copy and stealth their way in. So long as they hold their cover.
>>
>>2243152
>Where are we dropping the infiltrators
One on the mining colony and one on the civilian station.
>>
>>2243152
>"Where are we dropping the infiltrators sir?"
The mining operations seems like a good target. If we're supposed to drop them off at different locations, then the one gets dropped off at the civilian station in addition to the mining op.
>>
>>2243180
>How is enemy comms traffic? Can we intercept general broadcast information, so we can get a general idea what is happening in the system at the moment?
Surprisingly well secure for an auxiliary force.
There is enough lesser secured traffic to build up a good idea of what's going on, but it might take the better part of a day.

>Anything of use that we can intercept and bring back to alliance command and give to our infiltrators, should they need the extra intel to complete their assignments.
What you're recording could be cracked by an Alliance facility given enough time. It's all valuable which is why the ship is set up to automatically record it all.

>Also, what are the status of the ships around the planet? Any of them look like they've been in combat recently?
The majority are in good shape. As much as half of those present could quickly deploy with little warning.
There are a few units currently in dock that are undergoing repairs. Clearly some of them are getting time out on the front lines or elsewhere. A closer look reveals a newer model shallan attack cruiser that much have been captured within the week.
>>
>>2243209
>If we're supposed to drop them off at different locations
There are advantages to either. Deploying together does increase the risks somewhat if one of them has trouble but this system is considered one of the easier infiltration targets.
They can get ready for any of them once you've decided where they're being dropped.

"We'll drop one at the mining operations and another at the civilian station."

Everyone gets to work making sure the ship will have a clear approach and exit victor once the agents are away. LSTs are prepped just in case as are the shuttles.

"I think we'll need a shuttle for the mining operation. With the civilian station we should be able to sneak an LST in close enough to hack one of their docking ports to get aboard that way."

Are you fine with this? Or did you want to try and hang onto the shuttle should they both be needed in the next system?

Arron brings the ship in close, but not too close, to one of the mining operations expected to send a shipment in system in the next few days. Hiding behind one of several asteroids parked to await processing, the shuttle launches. Skimming the surface the infiltrator leap frogs between rocks then approaches the nearest mining outpost from the general direction of the planet. It enters a shuttle bay seemingly without incident.

"Move us away slowly, but try to keep us on a good angle to watch for activity in the shuttle bay."

Arron does as you ask. There are no signs of a firefight within 20 minutes so everything must be going well enough.

"Let's get to the station. I want the crew double checking the LST's gear so they can open up the doors without a hitch."

You're not familiar with this model of station but then there are probably many you've never encountered before. It looks to be a pair of rotating cylinders that have been linked at either end with more conventional industrial modules.

Arron brings the ship in closer than you'd like but the LST deploys without incident, grappling to the underside of an industrial area and putting their passenger aboard. No alarms were set off, and any security systems in that section were quietly looped long enough for the infiltrator to get aboard.

"LST docked."

"Good. Get us out of here."

Following an outbound freighter Linda mirrors its jump to make the ship's drive flare look like a temporary sensor ghost until you're far enough out of the system.

"You know, this is kinda relaxing having a cloaking shield on the ship." Linda comments. "It's almost enough to make me forget we could be spotted and killed at any moment."

"Not at any moment. We're really hard to detect." Arron defends the capabilities of his ship. "This thing has the most up to date cloak the House has built."

"So it's a prototype that could have unknown flaws in it?"

"Okay stop it. We're going to be fine." you stress.

>cont.
>>
The next target, the Patrol base, is a bit out of the way. There are no inhabited worlds close enough so a station has been positioned in deep space within weapons range of a reversion point.

"Just like Forbearance station, just no busted super heavies." you hope.

There is a crippled Neeran super carrier sitting just off the lane.

"What the hell!? Really?"
"Really."

The ship seems to have lost its entire drive section and suffered structural damage to much of the remainder. Its docking bays and repair facilities are fully operational and some minor attempts have been made to construct docking bays for larger ships in the destroyed areas.

"The outer hull armor is still in good shape overall. They've been stripping parts of the carrier to use as scrap to repair smaller ships. It has enough defenses to scare off anything short of another super or a ton of mediums and heavies."

"I'm surprised they didn't try to rebuild the engines. We're not that far from a shipyard."

Arron shakes his head. "Even under towing I don't think it would have survive the jump. The internal structure is wrecked too badly."

The iconic shields a ship of this type would use have been removed and replaced with conventional ones. There is a detection net nearby that might have been set off by your ship had you been using the main trade lane. Fortunately its too complicated a system to place everywhere.

Sam and Dave believe they should be able to adequately hide the ship if you wanted to make a close approach to the station. It's shields do open to allow vessels in or out, though even Arron admits it would be tight.

"We could swing in close to transport that's on approach and send the remaining shuttle over. Or do the same on a ship farther out."

"Why don't you just capture a ship?" asks Linda, looking like she immediately regretted saying that.

>Your orders?
>>
>>2243559
Why are we sending a shuttle over instead of just dropping the agents on the hull? It shouldn't be a problem on an inbound transport and nobody will wonder where that additional shuttle suddenly came from. Capturing a random ship behind enemy lines seems like it could potentially cause a lot of trouble for very little gain.

It's a good thing that was for getting aboard and not how well they did their job after.

"That one right there." You point out a freighter that has come out of FTL and has changed course for the station.
It's a good sized ship, similar to the carrier hull vessels but clearly made on a budget. Arron brings the ship in close enough to not even both with an LST or shuttle, the infiltrator simply jumps from one of the airlocks and soon enough has touched down on the hull of the ship.

The next good ship on approach looks to be a corvette carrier that has taken some damage. It's running with shields down. Arron is a bit more wary of this one, making sure not to be caught blocking a sensor array or fighter launch tube. He's careful not to use thrusters or the main engines, even using the repulsors only against other ships or the station.
Once the infiltrator has safely made it to the hull they head for the damaged areas of the ship.

A minute after you've backed away coms intercepts what they believe to be a security alert from the station. Zooming in on the docking bays you can see hazard lights going on in a few areas.

"What happened?"

"Decrypting coms. One moment sir."

Several minutes later enough of what is being transmitted is starting to come across clearly enough. The first transport reported a possible stow away and their captain decided to shut down everything. Security has been dispatched and are now conducting a sweep, but so far haven't found anything of note.
"They seem certain someone opened a hatch without proper authorization but other than that they're drawing a blank."

Hopefully security wont be tightened too badly elsewhere as a result.

Getting a few AU distance from the station it seems that neither infiltrator has been caught, though the freighter is still in lock down.
"A mission accomplished. Nobody on our side died as near as we can tell." is Arrons final assessment.

"And we still have a shuttle with codes that are good." Linda points out.

Reasoning for stealing stuff at 3, we can plant evidence to make it look like their rival was stealing supplies from Girisha's stores and is far enough away from the infiltrators no one would look their way.

>>
>>2244379
Is there a production facility for the jello shields nearby? Stealing even one of these should be incredibly useful once FA R&D gets them working. Or maybe kidnap people involved in using or installing them.
>>
>>2244510
>Let's see if we can find a ship carrying artifacts to steal.
That will take some work but may not be impossible.

Girisha will probably try to monopolize anything recovered from the sphere. Which would mean they would be found aboard one of the heavy cruisers, or worse the command ship.
However, it is not out of the question that Girisha would have to send some sort of tribute to the Empire's leadership. That might provide an opportunity to intercept them, and further damage their reputation as a result.

Obviously this would require a substantial investment of time and resources.

>>2244714
>Do the Neeran use factory ships? Looting one of these would be hilarous.
Construction ships that build factories and stations. Sort of similar. Otherwise the only true mobile production craft they use are Supers.
The trick is to get control of it before the crew destroy the data banks with the construction data.

>>2245236
>Is there a production facility for the jello shields nearby?
If there is it's a high priority for destruction.

It's true that the Alliance still has a substantial bounty on the capture of these shields, though they're not actually needed for R&D at this point.
>>
>>2246123
>though they're not actually needed for R&D at this point.
What makes them so powerful?
Plasma trapped in between each shield layer?

Holograms?

I really need to find a better name for those.

>>2246164
They would be something in between minovsky particle shielding and the liquid metallic defenses of Iserlohn fortress in LOGH. I've never been able to come up with a satisfactory solution, though I've always leaned toward an exotic energy particle.

Whatever artificial particle makes up the bulk of the shield does require containment systems to get the shield to hold its shape. It still behaves similar to a liquid in many respects, with SP torpedo detonations inside forming temporary bubbles. I have considered that they may be related to the particle stream produced by twin linked phase weapons.

The Industrial Base that was an option to target with infiltrators seems to already be a hotbed of political intrigue between the two fleet commanders. A ship stolen probably wont stand out too much among everything else, or that's what you hope.

A number of faction built smuggling ships are present. It's hard to tell how much may have simply been captured earlier in the war or are actively in use running contraband across the border.

"What is that? That's not supposed to be here!" one of the sensor officers blurts out.

Looking at the image you see what looks to be a medium cruiser sized tanker parked among the logistics craft. It's a heavily modified Trident class that's clearly seen better days. The engines are still good, but the front half has been rebuilt allowing it to carry Neeran fuel tanks.

"Partial registry ID's her as the TCS Troika."

Further scans of the docks in orbit reveal a stripped down Heron that's being repaired.

Among the Neeran ships present there's the usual assortment of corvettes and battleships, though some other designs stand out. Neeran Attack Frigates are present in numbers. It looks like older ships are having their guns replaced with newer models.
CX transports are busy loading cargo on or off from the base. A few are currently parked at the fuel docks.

"Find me a construction ship. Big money, big money, come on."

"There are two construction ships. One is offline for maintenance the other is loading cargo."

Arron points out another Medium cruiser that you'd initially mistaken for wreckage. The front of the ship looks like a skull carved out of scrap metal and broken hulls. It's difficult to tell if the ship is made up of Faction or Neeran components. Maybe both?

"Looks fast." Is Arron's official assessment.

Are there any prototypes or ship types around the alliance still has a bounty on?

Anyway, the construction ship currently loading cargo seems like a tempting target, as we could hopefully redirect their jump when they're heading out from this location. How are the engines on that type of ship? Would we even stand a chance to make it back to allied lines?

Is the Neeran Fast Battleship a new design? The Terran ship seems like a tempting target simply because the engines should make our getaway easier.

If the pursuit force underestimated what was necessary to bring it in, yes. Arron suggests your Nocturn be used to get the drop on pursuers after the initial jump.
"We have SP Torpedoes and we can fire them without disengaging our cloak."

>Is the Neeran Fast Battleship a new design?
New-ish. A couple of years ago the began producing a slightly smaller Battleship with all of the firepower and toughness of the original. Their armor is also resistant to older model SP torpedoes. It seems they're trying to streamline production and reduce resource requirements.

"I want to steal that construction ship. If we can secure it and its database it could be worth a lot to the Alliance."

"To the war effort or your bank account?" Linda asks despite already knowing the answer.

"Yes."

You call a briefing as Arron moves the ship in closer, finding a good place nearby but out of the way.

"Eldal and Risto, you're going to work on securing control of the Construction ship for launch. If you can, try to disconnect their production database so the crew cant wipe its memory."

Estavan Risto seems a little nervous but he's up for it. Eldal has been teaching him how to better infiltrate Neeran systems.

You point at the medium cruiser with the skull on it.
"I'm going to take my Recon team aboard this big pirate ship, scout it out a bit and leave a potential business offer. Once we're done there we'll get to the construction ship ASAP."

"Is that really such a good idea sir?" Rufaro wonders.

"It's fine, we're not going there to steal it. I dont think we'd have enough people to secure two ships and it might take us weeks to get its systems figured out if they've done custom work."

That seems to provide enough reassurance for the moment.

"Sam is keeping us concealed from any of the more powerful Neeran present. Dave you're on standby should Eldal or my team need help."

Dave gives a thumbs up. "Got it."

Ilya and your personal guard will also be ready to help secure the construction ship if necessary.

Your team is dropped near the docking connections to the junky looking medium cruiser. It doesn't take long to follow connectors across to the hull and locate an air lock made using faction tech. Valeri thinks part of the hull may have come from a Sledge class but isn't certain.

The hacking modules are more than a match for the security systems and soon you're aboard. Parts of the interior look like they've been set fire to, or welded back together from spare metal plate, while others are pristine.

"Opinions?"
"It looks worse than it actually is." Valeri points out a few areas. "Structural bracing is solid. Everything else seems secondary."

"So they just don't care about the look much." you conclude.

"Seems that way." Rufaro agrees.

Into what you determine to be the command areas you encounter larger corridors clearly intended for use by Neeran. Either the ship's captain is one, or it's expected that they'll carry officials aboard. Possibly observers similar to what the Alliance does? That could make things tricky for trying to encourage potential desertion.

Two Neeran officers are working in the bridge when you find it along with people of several other species. From what you're able to get a look at it seems fairly spacious, featuring either windows or a good sized displays covering the front half. Fortunately it isn't that busy at the moment.

Not far away you locate what should be the captain's quarters. They're not Neeran size which is reassuring that this trip might not be in vain.

The desk is booby trapped because pirates.

Valeri covers the hallway while you take a look around the office. Glancing around you decide to hide it in the desk drawer. That should prevent other members of the crew from finding it instead.

The drawer isn't locked but there is a slight scraping noise as you begin to-

"STOP!"
Rufaro tackles you to the floor behind the desk and a stun pulse emitter in the ceiling goes off. Protected by the sturdy bulk of the office furniture the two of you avoided the worst of the blast.

Unsurprisingly an alarm begins to sound from out in the hallway.

"You know what I'm just going to stuff this in the seat cushion! Good! Bye! Running!"

With the envelope placed you and Rufaro rush out the door and begin sprinting down the hallway. Rufaro has to stop briefly to reset her camo but other than that you keep moving, getting as far away from the command deck as possible.
It isn't to the point of calling for help yet but that wont take much.

Your bodyguards find the shortest and least populated route to an airlock then set to work disabling its security features. Rufaro knocks out the airlock lights with ther HF blade to reduce the chance of anyone on the station seeing your exit.

Scrambling through the door and onto the hull, Valeri hits the door close control from the inside then yanks his arm back. The teams makes it way back along the docking arms as quickly as possible then you send a tight beam signal for the LST to pick you up to reach the construction ship more quickly. You'd rather not stick around to find out how much info the ship's internal sensors got on you.

A short ride later and you've arrived at an airlock Risto has secured. They've isolated one of the data cores and Eldal is about to disable the internal sensors and communications.

"We could use a hand securing engineering. That will make it easier for us to vent sections of the ship once we seize the bridge."

"Let's time our assault on engineering to go off at the same time as the one on the bridge."
Your krath team mates are more than happy with that. You just need to get control of engineering quickly.

Proceeding to engineering you draw your HF blade and consider the use of your plasma pistol. The Mark 7 has been rebuilt and its adjustable beam strength means you're less likely to punch clear through anything vital like a reactor housing.

"No prisoners, we can't afford to watch them."

"Understood." Replies Valeri, Rufaro merely nods in agreement.

"Keep it quiet, let's move."

The three of you split up and begin systematically eliminating the engineering crew. Two thirds of them are down before any of the remainder realise it.

A big Neeran engineer hurls a conduit they'd been working on in your direction crushing a system console you'd been considering using for cover. You manage to take them down with a trio of shots from your plasma pistol.

Valeri locks down the remaining doors to the compartment and Rufaro opens fire with her heavy expedition rifle, again firing explosive rounds. Her fire manages to silence the last of the opposition.

"This is the bridge, is engineering secure?" asks a Neeran voice. After a few seconds delay Eldal asks again, this time in his normal voice.

"We're ready down here." you reply.

"Good." eldal asks you to change a few settings to give him access to more of the ship's systems then get's set for departure.
"Detaching moorings and decompressing the rest of the ship. We'll see in a moment if they bought my fake clearance orders."

You can feel the rumble of the main engines as they throttle up. Checking the displays you can see that the ship is pushing away from the station and out of the gravity well.

"Good news and bad news."

"What is it?"

"I had to request a small escort to keep it from looking too suspicious. Arron will have to take them out."

"Eldal, how long do you think you can string these guys along?"

"A bit but not overly long. Did you have a plan?"

"Yes. I need a secure channel to the ship. Send him our planned route."

Eldal isn't 100% certain but he thinks he's managed to get a secure channel open. You tell Arron to signal your reserve contact. He wasn't told any more than necessary to get hold of Berwari's mercenaries, just where to send a signal and on what channel. Once taken care of he sends a short burst confirming it's been sent.

Now it's just a matter of waiting.

Shortly after completing your first jump and beginning a realignment Risto calls from the bridge.
"There's another FTL contact incoming at high speed. I don't think it's Neeran but it isn't the Hidden Dagger either."

"The escort want us to jump immediately." Eldal informs you. "I'm trying to convince them not to jump as the flare might give away our position."

"Are they buying it?" you ask.

"...they just called me a coward that deserves to be stuck on a work barge so I think they might."

You use one of the consoles to tap into the external sensors. A few tense moments of waiting later a 6 winged Battlecruiser jumps in and immediately kills one of the escorting Frigates. Flashing past the group at full burn the vessel begins to come about, firing phase cannons. Eldal throws the construction ship into a hard evasive maneuver to get clear of the group as the smaller ships scatter.

The escorting corvettes are FTL models meaning their maneuverability is greatly reduced compared to normal Neeran ships of their size. They still have powerful main weapons, and soon begin to hammer the larger ship with fire.

Despite being out numbered it doesn't take long for the Merc ship to tear through the smaller craft. With their forward weapons they manage to box in then overwhelm the corvettes with fire one at a time. When a Frigate gets in behind them a pair of aft fired SP torpedoes cripple the pursuers main gun and rip a large hole in the hull. Eventually the Battlecruiser gets around to disabling the damaged Frigate as well.

"Enemy vessel, heave to or be fired upon."

"Do as he says." you order.

Arron contacts them shortly after, though remains cloaked. Within a few minutes the Mercs send over a prize crew and begin planning to secure the salvage left over from the escorts to the outer hull. By the time everything has been loaded a second Battlecruiser has arrived.

Both of your teams transfer back to the Hidden Dagger and follow the ships back to a friendly port.

One of the captains are quick to contact you once the salvage is secure for potential handover to the Alliance.

It will take some time to access all of the data without triggering any lingering security measures. Probably construction patterns for smaller utility bases and outposts. There could easily be ones for larger stations though.

The Alliance is toying with the idea of having data cores that can be quickly and easily swapped in for the Neeran ones so captured construction ships can produce Faction station designs. They're hoping to have it ready in time for the offensive.
>>
"You can get 40% of the construction ship as down payment if you stay. We did a fair share of the work getting it out away from their base."

"I suppose it will do. We'll stay on for the time being. We've been able to sell some of our listening data to Alliance intel so hanging around hasn't been a complete loss. What is all of this about anyways? Berwari wouldn't really tell us anything."

You shrug. "I didn't give him much to go on, but he knows I'm good for keeping up with an agreement. I don't really want to say it's above your pay grade-"
"But it is, I get that. He's usually got some crazy scheme in the works, and most of the time things fall apart in his favour. So I guess I'm saying I've gotten used to that."

You let the mercs know you'll be away for a few weeks readying other operations before returning to the region.

While ship and crew are ready to go the Alliance requests you accompany a convoy back to the main rally point to cut down on stray drive flares. Apparently they're trying to map ship movements and want as few individual craft flying around as possible at the moment. That leads to plenty of delays. By the time you get back to the Intel base you've been asked to stage out of it's only another 10 days until the cloaked battleship squadron arrives.

Your crew could probably do with some leave. Not an easy prospect or regular occurance for most people assigned to Nocturn class ships.

Was there anything you wanted to take care of during this time? Or would you rather just time skip until the arrival of the squadron?

You give everyone some much needed leave. Even you spend a couple of days away from the hassles of the expedition. Your family as well as the people back on Rioja are happy you're remaining in contact as frequently as you are.

Berwari is glad to hear that his people are doing a good job, though he would like to know how long you intend to be at it. You suggest he plan for longer term not shorter. If necessary he can rotate out the ships and crews. Ideally you still want as few people as possible knowing he has ships nearby to back you up.

Scheduling leave time you also make sure to get some practice with the new sword. It's still seems a bit odd. You've often been one to strike from the shadows when fighting on foot and this is certainly not a weapon for that.
Fencing practice in general turns out to be a good idea. You've been getting a little rusty when it comes to the sort of techniques often faced with while dueling. The increase in reaction time has screwed up a few of the routines you'd gotten into. It's almost easier to practice with the hard plate armor on.

Rufaro admits that you're probably going to need another double as she can't keep up with you now unless wearing power armor.
"I may need a transfer to the rest of the Reynard Guard's power armor forces once this is all over. I'm not getting any younger and eventually you're going to need another body double."

>What say?
>>
>>2250676

I'd like to keep her on as long as possible. And if we do need another body double, that she and us work together on training them before Rufaro switches out. Also, she is mentioning switching out from being a body double again.

Is something going on with her family or personal life that she needs help with?

Is someone threatening her or blackmailing her?

Maybe there is some plot going on we are not aware of that involves removing one of our most trusted body guards?

Sure she said about switching back into the regular guard after this latest expedition is over. But she is part of our circle of trusted friends, allies and advisors.

tl;dr: I don't want to lose Rufario from her current capacity and I blame her mentioning replacements on the Old Guard plotting.
>>
>>2250711
"You mentioned switching out from being a body double again. Is everything okay with your family or personal life? Anything you need help with?"

"We're both in crazy good shape but it's getting harder to keep the extra weight off. I'm a little older than you are and we're both into our early 30's now. Plus I think my metabolism isn't quite the same as yours? Combined with your speed boost treatment things start to add up. I'm going to need adjustments to that suit of Recon armor if I keep using it and then it wouldn't exactly be a match for yours will it?"

"Oh... well as long as nothing really bad is happening. Because that's what I end up worrying about. I'm glad that it isn't." you assure her.
"You're still part of my circle of trusted friends, allies and advisors though."

"Well I hope so sir. Besides you need more people than just Rob Ecord keeping an eye on the Guard. Some people don't entirely trust him or the others that took the crazy Veckron treatment all those years ago."

That's good to know.
>>
>>2250676
"That's understandable but I would hate to lose you though, we've been through a lot together and experience counts for a great deal."
"As long as you're looking like me you're fulfilling your main purpose, as vain as that sounds."

I'm not even sure how many more missions we'll go on in any case, once the Dominion begins the offensive it's going to be all brutal spaceship action. As long as she can operate/protect us, then it's fine. If she feels a transfer is definitely necessary I'm sure we can arrange some position where she can organise our personal retinue whilst not actually accompanying us. Rufaro's Raiders

"What really?"

Rufaro nods.
"With so many colonies being destroyed by the Neeran the TA government are stepping up terraforming projects in the Centri cluster. The pay isn't good at all but they knew things were going to get bad in the Dominion. One of my Aunts were able to take them in.

"Their work tends to be a bit more ground level. If there's a position available they might go for it, but that's up to them. I can't say for sure if it would be putting them in more danger."

There remain some concerns with planet moving you have to admit.

>>2250877
>Also we should call up the Harmen's and see if we can get someone who specializes in terraforming to come back with us to the sphere.
Being so far from any J-D territories, this will take time. Or will it? It seems the company does have a few people working on projects in PCCG space. That's only a week away.
They'll see if they can find some specialists.

The Foundation science team are still up for any chances to get another look at the sphere. That is the entire reason for their organization existing after all. Their former primary geologists were unavailable on account of being deceased. Several of their people have some cross training though it's not a specialty.

>>2250900
>what about inviting Troy along for a visit to the sphere with promises of horse riding and daring danger to be had?
Quite separately from everything else you send a message along to Troy Harmen. You really don't want his family finding out the details of this while he's still close enough to be recalled.

You haven't seen much of him, not just because of a camo systems it turns out. He's been conducting more training with the Krath armor. There hasn't been much opportunity to test it so far. The only time you saw real combat was situations where Recon armor was necessary.

According to him the Krath armor is still rather weird but he's used to it enough now that it isn't an issue.

With the arrival of the minelayers you have everything necessary to institute your plan to harass the forces outside the Dyson sphere. Updated cloaking shields are being installed and SP Torpedoes loaded.
The larger ships dont have the same ability to fire their main weapons while cloaked but they should be able to drop mines without issue. It should take two weeks to deploy the asteroid and minefield then return.

Did you want to deploy them now, conduct one of the other available operations, or wait for Troy Harmen to arrive?

It looks like we're going to hold off on the mine laying operation for a bit and get started on intel gathering for G) Intercept tribute.

The Shallan military has recalled their two battlecruisers. You'll have to contact them again when you're ready to move the asteroid.

Your cloaked battleship crews are all veterans of the civil war. They've have training with both Kim and Sylvan and as a result can cover a wide variety of roles. With the change in mission priority the minelayer gear is stripped from them and replaced with heavy torpedo launchers. It only takes a couple of days to complete the refit. They're ready for covert action, whatever that might entail.

Some stealthed heavy torpedoes are available but not a huge stockpile. Alliance intel provides a few recon teams in addition to the commando teams Kim made sure would be stationed aboard.

By the time everything is ready Alliance intel has responded to your request for places to intercept communiques about the transfer of goods or tribute between fleet commanders and the Neeran capital. Com hubs closest to their nav station on the other side of the cluster would be ideal, but the Alliance can't act on intel from that location at the moment. It would give away what com lines they've managed to tap.

Instead your fleet i given locations for com arrays throughout Girisha's territory and those that should connect back to the main hub. It's going to take time to plant bugs at all of these.

A Terran officer working with Alliance intel wants to speak to you before heading out. He introduces himself as Captain Gaben Wilson.

"Viscount Reynard, some of us have been going over your mission proposals combined with ones suggested by other parties. Considering the danger posed by having a Neeran Command ship on the loose, or worse, them getting their hands on more sphere tech, we're putting real thought into establishing a dedicated taskforce."

"How big of a force are we talking?"

"Everything would be based out of one heavy carrier to minimise intel leaks from bases. It's a new ship we want to test on long duration covert fleet support. A fast heavy carrier if you will."

That sounds familiar.
>>
>>2251697

We are listening, go on.
Terrans stealing our amazing ideas?!
>>
"The Rovinar would also want to use the opportunity to try cloaking larger ships. The Neeran can do it with their longer range cloaking fields drawn in closer, we're hoping to level the playing field a bit more."

He hands you a pad with a few basic diagrams of the ship and other information.

It's a concept that you encountered back when your company was looking at designs to produce from the Surakeh yards. There wasn't much interest in it abroad either at the time so it had remained on the drawing board for a few years. Apparently the relative success of the converted Qlippoth type carriers had cause it to be re-examined.
Before the end of the Dominion's civil war the Terran Alliance had purchased production rights and has constructed a few of them. Now it seems they're experimenting with different roles for them.

"I know you haven't technically come out of reserve and are running your project on your own dime, but I wonder if you'd consider transferring your operation to the Suvorov? You'd be active duty Alliance but I'd make sure you were able to continue on with your Sphere related operations."

Good question. That is a little hazy, but could legitimately happen. Though if it did you could place salvage rights claims on it and at least get money for it.

It's more a concern if something the Alliance considered a higher priority came up and ordered the taskforce to another area or objective. That is unlikely since the op would fall under intel but you never know. The Admiralty tries to avoid screwing with Intel's assets but exceptions do happen.

The downside of refusing the offer is that you may end up competing for intel assets eventually.
>>
>>2251766
Well what if we, for example got a hold of how the Sphere's weather control tech works. That is some really not cheap and not inexpensive tech to suddenly find in ours and the Dominions hands. Would they claim that tech for the FA or would we be be able to take it back to the Dominion.

Now if it were say, a means to produce a weapon or improve a weapon system I would understand handing it over with salvage rights.
>>
>>2251766
I guess as long as the rest of the crew doesn't count as alliance personnel things should be fine. Arron is the ship's captain, so everything his crew or ground forces recover is technically his or his employer's. Theoretically.

We'd have to draw up a special contract though, I doubt the standard 6 month tour of duty works for this.

The Alliance is using a bit of an odd system. They basically give an officer a reserve status rank and active duty rank. Some countries used to do this more often.

While in command of the training base Sonia was operating at reserve rank which is that of a Wing Commander. Full active rank is that of a General when leading fleet groups on the front lines.

Even if I would like a more official note from the FA that they wont steal any of our artifacts.

You accept the proposal but most of your J-D personnel and assets will remain outside alliance service.

The Suvorov is prepped for deployment along with a number of Krath and Rovinar ships. One Rovinar Medium will act as its main escort. Assault corvettes are assigned but you note that all of them are Aries models equipped with stealth coatings. It seems they've been provided by the Dominion from assets seized. Atlas class transports equipped with cloaks are also part of the logistics train.
All former Aries ships have been thoroughly checked. They can't be remotely hijacked by an angry AI.

For now your group is going to head into enemy territory and set up shop. Troy Harmen will have to catch a ride on one of the resupply ships when he gets to the region.

"How big is our Carriers drive flare?" you ask Linda mid flight.

"I think they're trying to use a Krath system to reduce the flare as much as possible but their FTL is too powerful for it. They might have to switch to conventional systems when we cross into enemy territory."

Which means that either way you'll probably be seeing a pursuit force of some kind. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Did you want to make the battleships available to help deal with enemy pursuit? The Nocturn? Both?

It's unlikely that they'll be able to quickly bring enough forces to bear in sufficient numbers, but they'll certainly be willing to try.
>>
"Reynard to Battleships, be ready to help deal with any pursuit forces that come after the fleet. I'm hoping you have enough firepower to make them change their mind."

Orders acknowledged, the ships go on alert as you approach enemy territory. A number of Rovinar cruisers are also ready to help with rear guard. Most of the other Battleships will be screening the carrier. For now the assault corvettes are docked until it's certain they're needed.

Linda communicates the observed issues with the FTL system to the Carrier during a realignment. The Admiral discusses options with the Krath senior officer and Captain Wilson before deciding to turn it off. At this point it's only making things worse anyways, no reason to waste power on it.

During the initial entry into enemy territory the fleet narrowly bypasses outer patrol fleets. The next layer of scouts do manage to get a reading on the fleet, which gives deeper intercept units all the warning they need to plot your course.

A trio of fast Mediums along with Corsairs vector in on the fleet. A newer model Heavy cruiser carrying sensor arrays is closing but but it's having trouble keeping up.

The squadron leader of the cloaked battleships drops a number of heavy torpedoes set to home in on the largest Neeran vessels to arrive once you've moved on. It doesn't seem to kill any of them but it does slow them down.
Not enough it seems. Another group is vectored in from a base farther ahead.

Not wanting to end up in a more serious engagement, Silent Hunters are dispatched ahead to destroy or disable sensor and com arrays. It takes the better part of two hours to finally lose the trailing craft.

"I'd almost forgotten what it's like to operate a heavy carrier group out here." you comment.

The new ship did a good job of outrunning the enemy, though that had to have cost a good deal of fuel. Wilson informs you that the fleet wont be making any serious jumps until they've worked out the problems with the drive flare masking.

Linda requests to transfer to the carrier while you're out running missions to bug enemy com nets.
"I think I can do more good over there than here."

"It's not everyday you get to work on Krath FTL."
>>
With the fleet fin ally secure behind enemy lines your ships begin the task of locating communications arrays in order to tap them. It's not an easy job. With increasing frequency major com hubs are ringed with sensor arrays. Approaching undetected requires patience, waiting for enemy ships to pass nearby to conceal drive flares.

A few of the other ships have Neeran personnel attached to their special forces units in order to better conceal them from more attentive enemy crews. It's not always necessary but it's better to plan for the worst.

Over the course of your investigations it's found out that one of the main com relays is a place you've been before. A system where the only habitable world was destroyed by the Neeran then later turned into a shipyard. One the Alliance did its best to turn into a graveyard.

Two command ships are present, still being reconstructed from the wreckage of three that were crippled or destroyed. These are far from being the scaled up city ships they were previously. Each now mounts a dozen weapons systems that, according to Arron, should be able to kill other super heavies as easily as a Scorcher can.

Arron glances over his shoulder at you.
"This is bad right? Because this looks bad to me."

Girisha's command ship seemed to be undergoing modifications to add more large weapon systems, though they didn't seem to be nearly as extensive. If that's true these may be the only ones able to carry such powerful guns.

>What say?
>>
>>2253378

"Are you sure these weapons aren't just decoys to either scare people away from the ships or set a trap for a raiding fleet?"

Arron calls up part of the image highlighting a large gun awaiting installation currently parked outside the ship. It certainly looks real but they're far from finished.

"Well, this is horrible. Perfect opportunity to get some damage in if those command ships aren't active yet though. What are the local defences looking like?"

The yard is chewing through the materials from the destroyed planet at an impressive rate. It looks like they're focusing on total material output rather than efficiency. They know conventional FTL is going to be near useless in this system in another five or six years.

Due to their high output combined with all of the left over salvage the yard has been rebuilt beyond its former capacity and is producing an impressive number of warships. Six "Gun Cruiser" supers built mostly out of scrap are present, along with ten Scorchers and twenty Super Carriers. It seems the Scorchers are being used as a modified mining array using their plasma projectors to break up rock.

Checking available reports it seems the Alliance is aware of the yard's status but it's considered to be too far inside enemy territory to tackle again. Certainly not without added backup from the Dominion.

"I dont suppose our carrier came with disposable v-torp launchers?" Nobody seems to know. You'll have to check when you get back.

Dave looks over the scans taken of the facilities present around the rebuilt shipyard. He manages to locate a well guarded station that you might have had difficulty determining what it was for. It looks more like it belongs in an art museum.

"That's the primary communications array. The most secure coms will be routed through there. It might even make use of quantum entanglement systems they've stolen from us."

"They stole the secure com systems from us?!"

Dave shrugs it off. "They were already close to finishing it themselves. It shaved a year off, two at most. If we can tap that thing we'll be set for the next year or so. It's just a matter of piggybacking our signal on one of their less secure outbound coms."

That won't be easy. Nobody needs to tell you that.

"Any other options?"

"Well... we could hijack some of their smaller less secure listening posts. That should give us the warning we need for our mission."

Something I've been giving thought to are what projects I should be working on once H&D is completed. Yes it's happening, hopefully before 2020.

If I do run another quest it will certainly be far more planned out in terms of how long it should take to complete. There are a number in the H&D setting I could see running, but plenty of others as well.

>Non H&D
Colony Fleet (Homeworld inspired OC)
Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn
40k Age of Strife
Gundam (universal century setting?)

>H&D Setting
Titan War and/or other things set in the Sol system
Human-Kavarian War (One either in space or on the ground, not both.)
Exodus
Exiles vs Union (Faction Wars)
Prometheus (Some time after H&D)
Future quest related to Sonia or the Reynard holdings in some way

Thoughts?

>Thoughts?
Yes to all the above? But for choices you've listed.

>Non H&D
Colony Fleet (Homeworld inspired OC) - This sounds like it would be interesting to do. Colony finding/ building with salvage and space battles galore.

Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn- I've played only C&C 3 Tiberium Wars, so while not fully familiar with that setting I do love the idea of orbital Ion Cannons and Tiberium Bombs and all the military shenanigans revolving around the titular resource, Tiberium.

40k Age of Strife - Kinda meh on this one, but it would be interesting to see the IoM before it was the IoM, when humanity was at its height.

Gundam (universal century setting?) - I know very little, but there are already Gundam quests on the board or mecha based quests at the least. I would like to see your take on it.

>H&D Setting
(H&D History Lessons for Sonia's Shark Cadets!)
Not sure how I feel about doing history lesson, but I'd like to see the Faction Wars and how they made the Smugglers Run what it is. Dozens of Supers being V-Torpedoed and supposedly large fleet battles all around? Let's go!

(H&D Legacy of Viscountess Sonia 'Salvage Shark' Reynard!)
If you feel like doing more in your setting, I'd be interested in participating post H&D stuff. Either following someone else or someone related to or connected to Sonia. Or even jumping far enough forwards to where Sonia has retired and we follow someone else.

>Human-Kavarian War
>Prometheus
>Future quest related to Sonia or the Reynard holdings in some way
>>
>>2254094
C&C will always have a special place in my heart. Especially if we get to play with the brotherhood and their insane stuff.

H&D Prometheus sounds cool since we get to remain in our already established universe and see the results of our actions in the long term years after Sonia is gone. Inb4 JD got wiped out days after Sonias deathe.

>Colony Fleet (Homeworld inspired OC)
Could be interesting.

>Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn
Seems pretty limited compared to H&D. I like the original C&C but I also enjoy the random 4X stuff we get to do in H&D a lot.

>40k Age of Strife
Might be interesting but with a set outcome and the 40k universe in general I'm not sure. Playing an AI that runs off to another galaxy could be fun, I guess.

>Gundam (universal century setting?)
Not the slightest clue about this setting.

>>H&D Setting
>Titan War and/or other things set in the Sol system
>Human-Kavarian War (One either in space or on the ground, not both.)
>Exodus
>Exiles vs Union (Faction Wars)
These are pretty much set in their outcome, so they might be better suited to relatively short quests with <30 threads. Seems like something that would really depend on the character and what situation they find themselves in.

>Prometheus (Some time after H&D)
Playing somebody in a scouting fleet or during the next colony rush could be fun.
Little Hune/Shallan Princess Quest

>Future quest related to Sonia or the Reynard holdings in some way
The one side quest where we played the salvage team was neat. Although the situation was really frustrating because nothing seemed to work at all until the very last minute.

Exploring the no no-FTL zones in Sonia's galaxy could be fun and profitable.

Also:
-BFG 2 was just announced
-If you're still playing Warships, get a Giulio Cesare during the next sale.

I'll tell you what's limited; EA's use of the C&C Franchise.

>Prometheus
>Playing somebody in a scouting fleet or during the next colony rush could be fun.
I chose that name for a reason, and it was not because Ridley Scott did a movie by the same name.

>Little Hune/Shallan Princess Quest

This never occurred to me. In theory I could probably make this happen, what with the Shallan government falling farther and farther from democracy the longer the war lasts.

>Also BFG 2 was just announced
Oh shit! I thought the first one didn't do well enough!
>>
>>2255062
>I thought the first one didn't do well enough.
It sold more than 100k units and was made by a development team with less than 15 people. I'm sure everybody involved made a comfortable amount of money.

>Shallan government
I've actually spent some thought on this. Their military government gets to run a buffer state on territory captured from the Neeran while their civilian government gets back in power in Federation territory.
>>
>>2255062
>This never occurred to me. In theory I could probably make this happen, what with the Shallan government falling farther and farther from democracy the longer the war lasts.
Personally I see the Shallans splitting up into four factions.
Those supporting the previous government and their ideas of democracy.
Those under the military junta who took over when the politicians failed.
Those who have grown up under Neeran occupation and might have completely different ideas about what they want.
And those whom fled Shallan territory in favor of the other factions. Or I guess those would be factionless.

I am more interested in how the overall political lanscape would change with a FA victory over the Neeran. What with most Factions overall having worked to keep the Dominion weaker than they yet now the Dominion are gearing up to be the most powerful of them all what with all the recent tech they got going. Republic no longer have monopoly on the best Plasma. Rovinar no longer have monopoly on the best stealt. Dominion based super Heavies and Heavies.

Will the Rovinar get involved with the eventual conflict between the Dominion and the Terrans? On whos side. The Kavarians? Will they support the Dominion in exchange for complete freedom from other Factions meddling in their nation? Will the Republic accept the growing powers of the Centri cluster starting to rival their own?

And the FA itself? What's going to happen to all that war material once the war is over. Are they just going to hand over their hundreds of Super Heavies?
>>
>>2255087
I've always thought it would be interesting if Sonia set up some kind of secret FA agreement that kept all the members rattling their sabres at each other but never fully invading. That way, if anyone was ever invaded by an external hostile power again, there'd be no 'slack' time to build up forces or get industry underway.
It would be a good ruse too, making the factions look as divided as ever.
>>
>>2255087
I expect things to turn outwards. Instead of squabbling over existing territories, the Factions will use their expansive fleets to chart and colonize new galaxies. I guess they will also conduct research into reestablishing contact with their home dimension and to see if ftl is working again.

I can't really see any of them being able to conduct major hostilities against each other within the next couple of decades
>>
>>2255082
>Their military government gets to run a buffer state on territory captured from the Neeran while their civilian government gets back in power in Federation territory.
Who will convince an entrenched military to move from the worlds they're protecting?

>>2255087
These are looking more likely.
>And those whom fled Shallan territory in favor of the other factions. Or I guess those would be factionless.
Shallan diaspora.

>Republic no longer have monopoly on the best Plasma.
They'll continue to lead in that field, even if only slightly.

>Will the Rovinar get involved with the eventual conflict between the Dominion and the Terrans?
That's really hard to say.

>And the FA itself? What's going to happen to all that war material once the war is over. Are they just going to hand over their hundreds of Super Heavies?
This is a major concern among all the factions.
There is discussion about later mothballing the most powerful supers and removing certain components. Parts would be relocated to each faction so it would take a joint effort, or a great deal of work, to get them fully operational again. Or that's the direction discussions are moving in.
>>
>>2255123
>Shallan diaspora
Shouldn't that depend on where they ended up? While I can see that happening in a place like the republic, shouldn't they end up being assimilated pretty quickly in the Dominion? The humans there don't really seem to consider themselves Terrans any more.

While tempted to try your luck with the communications array it's just too well guarded. A cloaked ship wouldn't do much good if they could use the hundreds of battleships present to create a sensor net. Given the strength of Neeran electronic countermeasures it probably wouldn't be that difficult if they suspected your presence.

"Let's tackle a few listening posts instead. This place is way too hot."

Making use of previous intel reports and comparing them with your own intercepts it's eventually possible to find a few listening posts. Or at the very least the systems they should be located in.

"What have we got?" you ask once the ship has arrived in the closest system.

"Two potentials so far. Dave is working on a third. I only see one place to hide a listening post in this system though."

A gas giant is the only planet in system. All of the others must have been swallowed up by the star when it entered red giant phase.

"We're getting really strange readings from that planet's atmosphere."

"Strange how?"

"Energy spikes. It's like, I don't know, the planet's core is unstable somehow? That's all I can think of."

You check a few displays yourself.
"Could this be artificial?"

"I don't see how, but someone could certainly take advantage of it to hide an outpost."

Sensors are unable to penetrate the atmosphere while cloaked. You could try an active sensor pulse to scan the gas giants atmosphere but would give away that someone was present. Or you could send the LST's and shuttles in to search for the facility. Their holographic camouflage wont be of much use in there, but the stealth coating should be enough. The downside is that with a planet this large it would take awhile.

You are an ancient ascended being inhabiting what is known to lesser beings as the FTL dimension. You were minding your own business, pondering the secrets your ascensions has revealed to you.
Then the Terrans blew up your ascended front yard by using veckron torpedoes. Again
Would you like to

Shuttles and LST's enter the atmosphere of the gas giant to begin their search. Arron Is careful about how close he approaches the planet's upper atmosphere before they deploy. He's worried about friction damage to the ship's outer hull coating if getting too close. Or worse energy discharges interfering with the cloak.

"The last thing I want is a flux tube suddenly connecting us to the planet's matgnetosphere."

The atmosphere is rich enough in hydrogen and helium for the LST's to scoop some to keep their fuel tanks filled. Shuttles are not so fortunate, lacking the necessary equipment. Luckily Aries took a page out of your book and the LST's are equipped to conduct in flight refueling with smaller craft.

It takes 35 hours searching the atmosphere but the smaller craft do eventually locate an installation. Storms in the surrounding area will make approach difficult but it is possible.
The listening post isn't here just because it hides their presence but because the odd atmosphere also seems to make it easier to detect com signals.

Dave knows the best way to sabotage the listening post to suit your needs but it would be difficult to keep him hidden. He's working to reconfigure a hacking module to do the same job, though it might not work quite as well.

You could clear out the station and set it to automatic but eventually the Neeran will notice it is unmanned. Or sneak aboard and install the necessary programs. Your choice of team will determine this.

Who is going aboard?

We can always resort to killing the crew if things go bad.

Also, does anybody produce recon armor or power armor for Neeran? If not, it might be a decent investment opportunity.
>>
"I'll take the recon team in. Dave, have the hacking modules ready to go."

The engineer has the equipment ready to go by the time you've suited up and arrived at LST dock. Entering the atmosphere is a bit rough but there are no signs to indicate that the listening post detected you.

Approaching the facility from below you see that it looks a bit like an ice cream cone. The operational parts of the station are built on top of a repulsor spike, with secondary equipment and docking ports along the equator.

The LST crew bring their ship in just below the docking ports allowing the three of you to climb out a a service hatch. They'll remain on station here but are ready to quickly relocate if anything goes wrong.
Wind in the thin atmosphere howls despite this being relatively calm pocket. Lightning flashes at higher altitude, and below is swirling cloud formations and darkness. Not a great place to be hanging off the side of a structure.

"Sure glad I'm not afraid of heights anymore." says Rufaro once you're inside.

It takes a half hour to determine which part of the station you need to reach to install the programs you've brought along. There are no signs of Neeran aboard, though there are sections built capable of allowing them access if needed.

Locating a suitable work station might not take long but finding one in a room that isn't occupied is harder. It seems like there is supposed to be one person present at any given time. Valeri has an idea and asks the two of you to stay put for a few minutes. He returns after having raided the empire's equivalent of a medical station.

"I can sedate the officer on duty. They'll probably think they fell asleep."

You're not sure.

"It's better than a decompression accident. No fatalities and it isn't a big deal. "

"What about a false decompression alarm?" asks Rufaro.

"Sedate him. We'll get to work on their systems as soon as you signal."

Valeri gets to work. Shortly afterwords the officer swats at his neck, complaining about insects and getting away from habitable worlds to escape them. A few minutes later they've passed out.

"That took awhile."

"I didn't want to dose it too high and make it sudden."

Rufaro loads up a hacking module on one system while you look after another. With the systems loaded it's just a few simple commands to finish putting things in place then hide them away.
"That should bypass the firewalls and partitions that are supposed to isolate their com and computer systems."

Returning the consoles to their previous state the three of you prepare to leave. There doesn't seem to be any issue with the sedated officer and by the time their relief is set to arrive the sedative should have worn off enough that they can be shaken awake.

Returning to the station exterior you climb back down from the hatch and into the waiting LST.

"Mission accomplished, get us out of here but keep it quiet."

Staying low until reaching the other side of the planet the LST gains altitude and links up with the Hidden Dagger. A short hop out of the system later and you're closing in on the next listening post.

Dave and the others have located a cargo ship that's been sent out to establish a new listening post. They dont know where it's headed yet, but it should be possible to either tail it for some time, or put a team aboard in mid flight between jumps.

Another available option is a relay satellite that's been found that recieves data from a listening post.
