Welcome to a zombie themed quest that I’m going to run. I’ll try to update fairly regularly, and we’ll use D20 rolls for important tasks but not for everything. This will follow a zombie pandemic in the United States, and we’re starting off in post-infection Chicago. Write ins are welcome.

>Character Sheet: https://pastebin.com/BFaKZWGd

This is surely the end of days. Some say that the Z1 virus was sent by God, cursing the unfaithful to walk the Earth for the rest of their lives. Others believe that it was created in a lab by scientists who want to destroy humanity. And still, others claim that the Z1 virus was a medical experiment gone wrong, one that nobody could predict the outcome of. No matter what the cause of the virus is, it’s the biggest threat to humanity since… Well, there might not be a bigger threat in human history.

The pandemic began somewhere in rural Canada, specifically Saskatchewan, but spread to the upper Midwest of the United States within days. Within the first week, the CDC released a list of symptoms of the virus: extreme aggression, deadly fever, and then rising again as a mindless zombie. A carnivorous creature that only feeds on flesh and blood, incapable of being reasoned with or utilizing intelligence. You’ve seen the reports on the news. First, the virus spread to Montana and the Dakotas. Then, it was taken by truckers and travelers to Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Now the virus has reached your state: Illinois. You sit in front of the TV in the morning, watching the reports of martial law being enacted in Chicago and other cities, with the National Guard doing their best to check anyone entering the city for signs of infection. There’s also footage being played of clashes happening between humans and zombies, out in the suburban areas around the city. You know that it’s time to leave the city, or at least attempt it, before the infection overruns Chicago too. After all, the city is expected to become a complete warzone in the next couple of days, according to the news.

You grab your backpack and step outside of your apartment, finding your bike and climbing onto it. You don’t have a car at the moment, because the mechanic shop that you work at is close enough for you to bike to every day. There’s a specific goal on your mind. What is it?

>Find your parents and sister in Cincinnati.
>Escape the country by boat or plane.
>Find other survivors and ride out the storm here in Illinois.

However, you have a more short term goal on your mind first.

>Try to steal an actual car.
>Loot a home improvement store.
>Loot a supermarket for food and misc items.

Rolled 19 (1d20)

Wrote this before the last post, but worked two options into the update.

>Find your parents and sister, steal a car, and loot.

Your family. That’s the most important thing right now. You never thought that you would want to move back to your parents in Cincinnati after getting set up in Chicago, but if there’s going to be a zombie apocalypse, you would rather survive it alongside them. After all, you’ve always been a bit smarter with these kinds of things, and you have the feeling that they’re going to need your help making it through this. But they’re all the way in Ohio, and you can’t help them unless you find a way out of Chicago.

You make a quick plan in your head, as you start riding away from your cheap apartment in the south side of the city. First, you’ll head to the Home Depot and see if you can find something to use as a weapon. Maybe grab a few other things while you’re there, like materials that can be used to barricade a building. Afterwards, you’ll see about hotwiring a car. You can only travel so far on the bike, and carry so many things in the backpack.

The store isn’t far from your apartment, and you arrive after riding for ten or fifteen minutes. You’re moderately tired from the ride, but it’s nothing too serious. It’s a large enough store that there’s bound to be other looters here, and from the looks of it, the staff have abandoned it in favor of getting out of the city or hunkering down elsewhere. You enter through the main doors, finding that someone else has already broken the locks, and you make a quick dash to the tools department. The longer you stay, the bigger the chances of running into hostile looters are, so you’d rather get this over with quickly. You pick up some loot and stuff it into your backpack.

>flashlight
>sledgehammer
>hatchet

After being satisfied with the loot, you move to another department and find a badass looking respirator that might also double as some facial protection. You pick up that and a pair of safety glasses, knowing that having any exposed skin is a bad idea when the Z1 virus is transmitted through scratches and bites. You duck down and reach for your hatchet, however, when you hear a couple of approaching voices.

The voices come closer and closer to the aisle that you’re in, and hiding behind a cart isn’t going to protect you from being seen by them. They come into view, and you take a good look at them. They’re dressed up in military vests and helmets, with weapons that indicate that they’ve been looting a lot longer than you have. Machetes, baseball bats, and a couple of SMGs. You identify three different people in total, and they set their eyes on you immediately and look at you like you’re one of their targets. They probably want to take any valuables you have. Realizing that they’re already hostile and that you can’t talk to them, you attempt running before they can get you.

As soon as you move from behind your cover and start to run, the looters reach for their weapons. Your position at the end of the aisle benefits your escape, but one of them has quick enough reflexes to fire at you as you leave, with one bullet managing to graze your shoulder as you turn the corner. You can hear them talking, probably about whether to chase you or not, but they don’t seem to follow once you dash out of their line of sight and run back towards the front entrance that you arrived through. Your backpack seems to have absorbed one bullet, and there’s less damage to your shoulder because of the thick sweatshirt that you’re wearing. Still, it’s going to leave you with a wound. After your looting run was cut short, you enter the parking lot again and look for a vehicle to hotwire. It doesn’t look like the owners of most of these vehicles are around, and you have a few choices. Which one do you go for?

>Yellow Hummer that can run over zombies but uses more gas
>Slower VW bus that can fit more people and supplies
>Fuel efficient Prius with less room and power.

>Slower VW bus that can fit more people and supplies

The VW Bus isn’t as fast or good at running over zombies as the other vehicles, but it doesn’t have the fuel demands of the Hummer and it can fit a lot of supplies and possibly other survivors inside. You climb inside and fiddle with the dashboard for a few moments, until you’ve opened it up and reached the stage where you can touch the internal wires together. It takes a couple of tries, but you eventually get the engine to start. You pull out of the lot and get back onto the road, looking out the window as you do. The only people on the street are looters, mainly because the National Guard and the infected haven’t arrived in the inner city yet. Outside of them, it looks like a ghost town…

Where do you want to go next?

Last update for tonight.

>Loot a gun store

You pull over to the side of the road and take out your phone, deciding to make use of the maps tool while the networks are still up. The nearest gun store is about ten minutes away, and you turn around and make the trip towards it, heading southbound. While you travel, you begin to notice the worsened state of the city. The major roads leading to the highway system are being filled by travelers attempting to get out of the city before the infection sets in fully. Those who are staying in the city are beginning to zombie-proof their house, boarding up windows and doors. Others are on the street brandishing weapons, watching for looters as they guard their workplaces and businesses. So much for gun control.

You still haven’t seen a zombie yet, but then again, the news claimed that they weren’t expected to hit the city today. For now, the National Guard and the police are set up in the suburbs, doing their best to prevent the spread. That’s what the radio is telling you as you drive. It’s an impossible task, considering the growth rates of the infection, but it should buy you some time to get out before the entire city becomes a zombie infested hellhole. Finally, you arrive at the gun store and turn the radio off. There’s already another car in the lot, and the place is closed up. What do you do?

>Try to force your way in through the front
>Look for a back entrance
>Loot the 7/11 next door instead
>>

Hopefully this will be less likely to make noise or otherwise attract attention compared to forcing the front entrance.

Update: Have free time tomorrow so we'll continue then and try to break in through a back door.
>>
The fact that there’s a car sitting in front of the gun store isn’t very encouraging. You consider trying to get in through the front, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea. Too easy for the person who owns the car, and possibly the store, to shoot you as soon as you get through the door. There’s also the chance that you make too much noise, and alert them of your presence. If the noise from the van didn’t already do that, of course. You climb out of the van and carefully make your way to the back, finding a back door and trying to open it. It’s locked. However, there’s a window that was left partially open, and you might be able to get in by forcing it open more. What do you attempt to do?

>Open the window
>Pick the lock
>Break the window

>Pick the lock

if we suck and fail at that,

You aren’t sure that you have the strength to open the window, and breaking it would make a lot of noise and alert the other person inside to your attempts at getting in. Thus, picking the lock seems like the safest scenario. You look through your pockets for something that you can use as a pick, and eventually, you insert a paperclip into the small slot and attempt to wiggle it until it turns the mechanism within the lock and allows the door to open. You haven’t done this before, so it’s going to take a bit of time.

Unsurprisingly, you do terrible at picking the lock, as it’s something that you haven’t done before. You’ve only seen a YouTube tutorial or two about the subject, and you don’t remember the details. Unfortunately for you, that means you aren’t quite going to pull off the Hollywood move of opening a lock with a paper clip. Instead, you move to the window, finding that it doesn’t require as much strength as you think it does to open. After a small struggle, it moves upwards enough for you to climb into the gun store. You’re in a small office area, probably owned by the person who runs the place, and you have another set of options to consider about what you want to do.

Hello guys, sorry for the unannounced break. We're set to continue tomorrow, probably with updates in 1-2 hour intervals.
>>
You could loot the office, but it doesn’t look like there’s much of value here. And anything worth taking, like cash, looks to be locked away in closed drawers and lockers that you aren’t going to have the key for. Carefully, you step out of the room and creep through the hallway, looking into each room as you do so. Some of them are empty. Eventually, you come across one that looks like the storeroom. There’s some guns hanging up on the wall, and plenty of ammunition. But because of the gun laws here in Chicago, there’s no automatic or semi automatic weapons. What do you pick?

>Easier to aim handgun
>Single fire rifle with harder aim and reloading
>Pump action shotgun
