I know that bulge

Ivan’s size means that, even at a walking pace, he can outrun you with massive strides. That’s why you’re struggling to catch up when he’s already reached the Tower. That is NOT why you’re currently running there street level, rather than on the rooftops. A small part of you points out that making yourself a target is part of the reason behind wearing such a colorful outfit, but a much more reasonable part comes up with a better plan: Stay low, so he won’t attack, sneak up on him, and trap him in time until Ladybug shows up.

It worked last time. During your jog, you jump to cross a surprisingly busy intersection, and you lock eyes with Ivan. You’re still so far away, but you know he sees you. You can almost see his head tracking the arc of your jump. Despite that, he seems content to simply stand in front of the tower, and makes no move to approach as you fall back below the rooftops.

You shrug off the sudden sense of foreboding and continue onward, only to skid to a halt as a cloud of… Purple butterflies blocks your path. The cloud’s occupants shift positions suddenly, and the mass forms into the shape of a masked head.

“Mehen,” it says, in a tone that may have been cordial had it not carried the slight buzzing tone, “It’s good to meet another hero. And so young!” It offers you a pleasant smile, nodding in approval at you, before settling into a much more serious expression. “As much as I wish I could say to introduce you to this life properly, we simply have no time. I, Hawk Moth, need your help to stop the supervillains responsible for this: Ladybug and Chat Noir.”

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>2221316
You can feel your eyebrows leap at the accusation, and your voice adopts a tone flatter than you’d ever managed before. “What?”

“I know how it sounds, given yesterday’s events, but think,” Hawk Moth whispers in harsh tones, “Those two were the last ones to interact with the stone creature, who was in truth a young student at a local school. His latent abilities activated in a tragic manner, which necessitated your help.”

Hawk Moth’s expression becomes as grim as his voice as he reaches the next part of his story, “One of my little butterflies was providing surveillance of the stadium and overheard that Ladybug was simply not around to help. Without her, you could never win. But… Who was it who insisted you needed her help in the first place?” You didn’t need him to answer. Chat Noir, your brain supplied.

“Then he abandons you to go and look for her, and only after you and your partner have exhausted yourselves and had to retreat did the two deign to show themselves. In fact, they arrived EXACTLY when you needed them to.” That… Was certainly true. And perhaps, as Hawk Moth was implying, more than simple luck…

“What you never saw were their powers. Chat Noir has the ability to drain the life from anything he touches. When applied to superpowered beings, the excess of energy allows him to steal their powers. Ladybug’s is much more sinister. Her power manifests as a small trinket, rarely something extravagant, that can corrupt anything she touches it with foul energies. A simple swap of Chat Noir’s stolen power and the poisonous force in Ladybug’s cursed items allows them to manifest an entire super-powered army! They’re mere minutes away from a total take over of Paris.”

That’s… Impossible. It’s impossible, but it explains too much… Where the other stone monsters came from, Chat and Ladybug’s perfect timing, why Chat never used his power, despite fighting Ivan for much longer than you OR Lapine… You had even seen Chat Noir attempt a “Cataclysm” on Ivan and Ladybug summon something when you had watched the fight on the news...

“I know it’s difficult to accept you’ve been tricked,” Hawk Moth says with a sympathetic voice, “But you’re the only one who can stop this. My powers simply cannot be used in sustained conflict. Butterflies make poor soldiers.” His mouth thins, and he states with all the authority of an officer: “You must take Ladybug and Chat Noir’s Miraculouses. His ring, her earrings. Bring them to me, and I’ll keep such dangerous power locked away and safe forever.”

“They wouldn’t do something like this…” you mutter to yourself. The facsimile of Hawk Moth’s head draws its brow together and asks, “What was that? Speak up, young hero.”

“They wouldn’t do this,” you say again, more confident as you gesture towards the marching army of stone giants. “There’s another reason for this, Hawk Moth, and I swear to you I’ll find it.”

If it were possible for such a stern expression to display even more disapproval than it did passively, then Hawk Moth would have done so. “Very well,” he concedes. “I admire your loyalty, but when my contingencies secure their Miraculouses and the rampage ends, you will know that you were mistaken.”
The cloud of butterflies disperses, leaving no trace it was ever there.

You feel a sudden shiver. If you believe in them as much as you said you did, then it was entirely too difficult to make that decision. You hope you’re right about them.

A roar and a crashing impact reminds you that there are more important things to take care of than your doubts, and you dash towards Ivan once again.

------

Even if you had decided to trust him, you mentally flinch when you hear Chat call out for his power.

“Cataclysm!” he shouts as he drags his claws along Ivan’s arm. You feel your heart clench, but all that happens is a massive chunk of the rocks that make up Ivan’s arm crumble to dust. The giant tries to cover the stump where his arm once was, giving you a clear view of one of your classmates in his other hand. Why would he-

“Lapine!” someone calls, and it takes you a moment to place the voice as belonging to the same shy Ladybug from yesterday. Lapine falls from the Eiffel and lands behind Ivan, carrying two identical - and polka dot patterned - rods. With the same speed that lead you around the streets of Paris, she jabs the rods into the ground, tucks and rolls between Ivan’s legs, then springs up to deliver a punishing uppercut to his jaw.

>>
>>2221670
You register the next moment in vivid, and horrifying, detail. As Chat swipes something that fell from Ivan’s Cataclysmed hand, and Lapine slowly falls from her leap, and Ladybug wraps a wire around the rods to trip him, Ivan turns. The motion places his hostage squarely between his stone bulk and the harsh concrete, and the only thing that saves her from a horrific death is, amazingly, Ivan himself.

A sloppy backhanded toss sends her flying in the other direction and facing another similar problem: Hitting the ground at intense speeds from far-too-high-to-survive heights. You do the only thing you can think to do, and take a running leap towards her, spearing the girl in mid-air.

You roll with your landing and tuck her head into your shoulder to spare her the worst of the impact. She seems understandably unsteady as you set her down on her own feet, but she’s got enough presence of mind to mumble a weak “Thank you” for your efforts.

“Miraculous Ladybug!”

When you look up, Ivan is back to his normal self, albeit laying on the ground and severely confused. The pavement that had been punched, stomped, and destroyed is untouched, and even the sections of the Eiffel that had been dented into a foreboding shape are perfectly in place. Swarms of ladybugs are flying in every direction, surrounded by a mystical glow, and wherever they touch, the world restores to normal.

You’re reasonably certain Hawk Moth was wrong - or lying - about their powers.

As the swarms fly off, presumably to fix other things throughout the city, you catch Ladybug’s gaze. She doesn’t look happy to see you. She guides the hostage towards Ivan, softening her gaze and whispering some - presumably - kind words before returning her attention to you.

“Where were you?” she hisses under Ivan’s voice stumbling his way through a confession of admiration for the girl.

“I got ambushed,” you answer in a whisper, “First by some blue guy, then by a cloud of butterflies.”

“Hawk Moth?” she guesses as you both flash a fake smile at the new happy couple.

“How’d you know?”

“He tried to convince all of Paris that we were the ones making him spread the akumas, that he’d stop if we gave him our Miraculouses. No one bought it, thankfully.” It sounds as though you made the right decision, although something sticks out at you.

“What’s an akuma?” Ladybug can’t quite disguise her surprise as she explains, “Those purple butterflies. It’s Hawk Moth’s power. He infects them with some kind of energy, then they turn anyone they touch into super villains.”

He said the same thing about you, you almost say, but you decide against it. “Didn’t you see it on the news?" she asks. "There were videos showing people being turned.”

You shrug and mutter something about not watching the news much, but for some reason, that brings her animosity back to the forefront.

“I suppose that’s why you didn’t say anything about Lapine being a thief?” she snaps under her breath, “They showed the story this morning. A rabbit-themed girl robs a jewelry store, and an hour or so later, you walk in with her loot. I doubt you found it on the sidewalk somewhere, so how exactly did you manage to take it from her without catching her and taking her to the police?”

>A) You really do not like her tone right now. “Are you accusing me of something, Ladybug?”
>B) Just explain it to her. “I was more concerned with getting their stuff back. She wanted to trade it for her freedom, and I took the deal.”
>C) You can see the writing on the wall. Tell her that there’s nothing to worry about. “Lapine’ll keep her sticky fingers to herself, Ladybug. I’ve made sure of it.”

“I was more concerned with getting their stuff back. She wanted to trade it for her freedom, and I took the deal,” you say with a shrug. It seemed like a fair deal at the time and still did in retrospect. Ladybug’s expression tells you that she would disagree. “And the broken windows and days of business they’re losing while they’ve closed to fix it? What did she offer you to fix that?”

“I’m not going to throw a fifteen-year-old in prison for making one dumb decision on her first day with superpowers,” you defend with heat in your words. Ladybug draws herself into a frustrated sigh and lets it go before continuing.

“I know, everyone makes mistakes like that, but she didn't fix it on her own. You had to do it for her. I guess I’m worried about what kind of person she is, how we know we can trust her...”

“You can trust her,” you say, “because I already handled it. I didn’t just let her run away,” you point out.

“What- What does that mean?” Ladybug sputters, suddenly more surprised than worried.

“I got Lapine to swear off robbery,” you explain, and you can’t fight the tone of pride in yourself. “She knows what’ll happen if she goes back on her word.” Ladybug gapes at you for a few seconds. It makes you a little uncomfortable.

“Uh, Ladybug? Are you okay?” She snaps her mouth closed with an audible clap and coughs into her fist.

“Well, uh, if- if you trust her, I trust her! I-” Before she can continue, a beep sounds from her earrings, and two similar noises ring from Lapine and Chat Noir nearby.

“Guess that’s our cue,” she says, one hand over her Miraculous. She flings her yo-yo towards the rooftops and, with a pull that should have had trouble lifting a water bottle, flings herself into the Parisian skyline. Lapine and Chat Noir are soon to copy her, each heading in their own directions, and you aren’t far behind them.

While the school is perfectly fine, thanks to Ladybug’s last trick, the administration decides to give you all a day off to “recover from the stresses of the events,” as well as a reminder that “the villain Hawk Moth is suspected to be capable of Mind Control, and any actions taken under his command are not the fault of the victim. Any students caught harassing victims for their unfortunate circumstances will be dealt with in a manner befitting the harassment.”

It’s nice to have a free day, but you can’t seem to find something to do with it. You could always…

Yeah, your list of friends probably shouldn't begin with "God of Repetition" and end with "possibly-ex-thief." You pick up your phone and pull up your class page. It should be easy enough to get into contact with anyone in your class, but who should it be?

“Nothing much, just watching an ancient power try to play Donkey Kong,” you mutter to yourself. Ekko shoots you a dirty look and returns your muttering with something about the controller being too big for his hands. You add Alya as a contact while you snicker.
[Lucas: that’s my problem: nothing. I’m bored, anything fun to do for locals?]
[Alya: well, I’m taking a friend hero hunting later today. Maybe catch one of them in action! I could show you around while we look for them?]
>A) That actually does sound pretty cool, even if you know she’ll never catch sight of one of the new heroes. [Lucas: Sounds awesome. Where you wanna meet up?]
>B) If she’s looking for superheroes, maybe it’s a bad idea to stick around her. She may just find one. [Lucas: nah, I wouldn’t want to crash you hanging out with your friend. Say hi for me, tho]

Alya, you discover, is not a shy person. After meeting up with her and her friend, you were both denied the opportunity to politely shuffle your feet and not talk to one another for a few minutes when Alya practically dragged your wrists into a handshake.

The other girl had a name attached to her, Marinette, and before you could ask where the handrails were located, you were off on Alya’s wild ride. The pace is merciless, and you spend most of your time jogging after her as she scans the rooftops for a hint of bright color.
When she finally runs out of breath, she allows the group to rest in the park. The girls take the bench while you rest against a tree. There’s silence for a few moments before you finally think of something to talk about.

“So, who do you think we’ll run into?” Alya stares blankly at you for a moment before she realizes what you’re asking and she perks up.

“Oh! I guess I don’t really know. I’m sure they’ll have their favorite places to hang out, or ‘patrol’ I guess, but they haven’t been around long enough for me to figure that out.” It’s a fit of egotism, but it’s a harmless question in context, so you ask it anyway.

“So who do you WANT to run into?” That causes a bashful smile, the first hint you’ve seen of that particular emotion in her.

“Any of them would be great! Ladybug is so cool under pressure, and she really looks like she knows how to lead a team, real Victory style, you know?” You nod, as you do know. Guess you were a bit hasty in deciding that no one your age liked superheroes. “Chat looks like he’s having the time of his life out there, and that’s something to admire. It’s one thing to SAVE people, it’s another to enjoy doing it.

“Lapine’s a bit iffy, with the whole… Robbery, thing…” Alya scrunches her nose at the reminder before powering through to finish her thought. “But what’s a better community service than fighting supervillains? I’m sure she just got over excited about having powers and feels bad about the whole thing, so it’s not a good idea to linger on it when she’s trying to do better.” She takes a breath to keep going, and you can’t stop yourself from leaning in.

“And Mehen-”

“Oh, please, let’s not run into Mehen,” Marinette whines. It takes more restraint than you knew you had to keep your expression questioning instead of shocked. Alya gives her friend a sympathetic pat.

“I know, he’s a little… Much, but he’s still doing good things, Mari.” Marinette shivers, despite the pleasant climate, and offers a counterpoint.

“You don’t think there’s anything suspicious about how he chased a criminal, and the very next day she acts totally different and helps him?” Now Alya looks uncomfortable, and there’s an uncertain tone when she replies, “I mean, I heard the rumors, but maybe they just talked…” Marinette draws her light jacket around herself.

“I hope so… He just creeps me out…”

“What did Mehen do that’s got you so worried?” you ask, in as innocent a tone as you can. The girls share a glance and, unsurprisingly, Alya is the one to fill you in.

“Well, you heard about Lapine and the robbery, obviously. Well, Mehen was the one to catch her. He returned the cash and the goods she had stolen, but Lapine herself?” Alya asks, and you actually catch yourself wondering what will happen next. She’s a good storyteller.

“She was gone. People all over Paris saw Mehen chasing her. With those creepy glowing eyes and that hood, some people said it looked like the Devil himself was after her. At midnight, he chased her into an alley. We even had footage!” she squees, before reaching for her phone and pulling the video up far too quickly to have browsed for it. Alya must have downloaded it.

Sure enough, the video shows Lapine, visibly panicked, run directly past the cameraman and into an alley. Only a few seconds later, the camera swings back towards the road she came from, and you feel your own heart skip a beat. In the darkness, with only a silhouette and the reptilian eyes to distinguish you from a living shadow, you looked like some sort of horror movie monster.

As quick as a snake, your past self dives into the alley to catch his breath. Of course, the video doesn’t show that very human moment, and you can recognize what it looks like. You looked unstoppable, a hunter that would never stop until its prey was caught and brought down, and you looked angry at being lead all over Paris. There’s another shiver in your spine when you realize you may have BEEN that angry. You simply don’t remember. You have to admire Lapine’s guts, if she was still capable of talking to you after a first impression like that.

“And then the next day, she’s right by his side. Almost twelve hours alone with him, and she’s totally turned around. Some people think he’s brainwashed her, or maybe tortured and threatened her into working with him.” Marinette is turning green as Alya talks, and you feel a little queasy yourself. Then you remember what you said to Ladybug yesterday.

She knows what’ll happen if she goes back on her word. Oh, man, what she must think of you.

Alya finally seems to wake up from the story and notice your shared expressions. She shrugs and sheepishly points out, “Buuut, that’s just a rumor.”

The three of you return to your hero hunt not long after, but the energy is gone. Alya keeps looking towards you and Marinette, Marinette is looking at the roofs and alleys with wide, fearful eyes, and you aren't sure how you feel. You just know it isn’t good.

You return to your home with an ill sensation in your gut. You give Marcus a smile to keep him from worrying, shout a “hello” to your parents, and close the door to your room with a frustrated sigh.

“Something wrong, Lucas?” Ekko asks as he pulls himself free from your shirt.

“I dunno,” you sigh again as you flop over your bed and stare at the ceiling, “I just didn’t think anyone would be afraid of me. I want to make people feel safer. That’s what heroes do, right?” You bend your neck to watch as your kwami taps at your television and turns it on. He hums in a nonanswer as the reporter covers the weather for the next few days. You groan and cover your eyes with your palms.

“Come on, Ekko, help me out here! What can I do differently?”

“Why do anything ‘differently’?” he asks, sounding much closer. You shoot up into a sitting position and nearly headbutt Ekko out of the air. You lean back a bit to give him space, and he floats a few inches away. “Don’t scare me like that, Ekko,” you tell him, but the kwami ignores your request.

“You’re the only one of the heroes that the city fears. If the city fears you, then so will its criminals. If there’s anything you should be doing differently, it’s attempting to scare them more.” Ekko coils his tail beneath him and sits on it, though with him still floating in mid-air, you don’t think he’s resting anything.

“Trying to undo that impression will make you seem indecisive and ineffectual, especially if you intend to do so through your actions rather than your words. Slowing down to spare their feelings while you’re saving their lives won’t do them any favors.” He blinks at you, and you get the feeling that, with his cards on the table, he’s waiting to gauge your reaction.

>A) He’s got a point… “You’re right, Ekko. I could really make this work for me. If we make the bad guys worry about what’ll happen if they try anything, we’ll be saving Paris before they’re ever in danger.”
>B) He’s missing the point. “A hero doesn’t just lock people up, Ekko. A hero inspires people. A hero makes them feel safe. How is anyone going to feel safe if they have to worry about me snapping and biting someone’s head off one day?”

Ekko nods at your assessment. “Exactly,” he says, his tone approving, “You’ve already made headway. Giving up on it now would be a retroactive waste of your time, and if stopping a robbery and a supervillain is a waste of time, then this whole endeavor was pointless.”

Satisfied he’s made his point, the kwami floats back to your TV and leaves you to think over your decision. It makes sense, thematically and practically. You’re the only member of the team (you guys really need to come up with a name at some point) based on a predatory animal, rather than prey or a house pet.

On top of that, your concern about the people of Paris lacking inspiration falls by the wayside when you consider the team. People already like Ladybug and Chat Noir, and seem willing to give Lapine a second chance, if Alya is any indication. If you decide to take on the role of a more… Hands-on protector, the children of Paris won’t lack for role models.

You smile to yourself and consider Ekko. None of this would be possible without him, but you still know so little about him. You don’t know where he came from, or why he was in your room. You have no idea what he is, beyond the strict definition he’s given you. Maybe it’s time to learn more about your new little friend.

“Hey, Ekko?” you begin, and you wait for the kwami to acknowledge you with a hum before you continue, “Why were you and my Miraculous in my room?” Ekko reaches over to the remote and turns the television off before floating off of the couch to look at you.

“That’s a very big question, Lucas. I’m not sure you’ll like my answer.” His expression is a neutral as ever, but you note the edges of his hood flaring a bit. Does that mean he’s nervous, or afraid? What did that mean for normal snakes, and would it even apply? Why wouldn’t I like his answer? Well, there’s only one way to find out.

“I’m sure,” you tell him, and manage to sound much less nervous than you feel. He settles down on the bed next to you, reminiscent of your talk on the Eiffel.

“I’m not sure,” he says, with an askance look at you.

“You aren’t sure,” you repeat.

“I am not,” he confirms.

“How are you not sure?” you hiss at him, only keeping a shout in because your family was home. Ekko shrugs at your shock and explains, “When the Miraculous lays dormant, so do I. When a wielder passes on or surrounders their Miraculous, the Miraculous grows dormant. My last wielder passed peacefully in her sleep, and then you tried to throw a book at me. The transition took just as long, from my point of view, as it took for me to describe it.

“I’m not sure how I’m moved from wielder to wielder. I do not know why I sleep for hundreds of years one time and only a few months the next. I don’t know where I’ll go, or who will be waiting for me when I get there. In truth, I never know if my Miraculous will be awakened again. Every time I am separated from a wielder may be the last time I truly live.” The kwami is still wearing the same blank face, but his hood has drooped lower than it usually does. You’re pretty sure you know what that means. You thought being immortal would be fun, but Ekko’s life sounded… Awful.

This kwami has saved your life multiple times. You aren’t just going to sit here and let him feel miserable. “Hey, you relax for a bit,” you tell him as you push yourself up, “I’m going to heat up some noodles.” Ekko perks up and, with wide, hopeful eyes, asks, “What- what for?”

You smile over your shoulder, aim a finger gun at him, and wink without saying a word. By the time you shut the door, Ekko is grinning. It’s the most you’ve ever gotten out of him, you think.

You hop downstairs and into the kitchen, catching another glimpse of your family. Your parents are having an animated discussion on the motivations behind a sitcom character and your brother is doing some homework at the dinner table. Marcus raises an eyebrow at you and waves to the chair beside him, but you shake your head and jab a finger towards your room.

As you grab a small pot and boil some water, he leans against the counter and whispers, "Feeling antisocial tonight?"

"Ekko's hungry," you whisper back. That shoots his eyebrow back up.

"He eats?"

"When he's upset," you explain with a grimace. Marcus silently "ah-ha"s at that and pats you on the shoulder. "Well, tell him he can talk to me too if he needs to."

"I'll let him know," you promise. You let the noodles finish, adding flavoring spices to keep it from being too bland, and march back to your room with a small bowl.

Ekko's just as ecstatic as when you left him and maintains the enthusiasm the entire time he's eating. You have to fight yourself from pulling him back, afraid he'll fall into the bowl.

He finishes his meal with a happy sigh and seems content, wrapping his tail around himself like an impromptu blanket. Looks like the food did the trick.

You and Ekko finally managed to find something you could play together. You control your character and fight the daedra, while Ekko uses the tie-in app on your phone to equip the best weapon for the job and drink potions to keep you healthy. The parallel to your relationship as Mehen is obvious, but Ekko claims the real thing to be much more boring.

"I mostly watch the world through your eyes and get 'squeezed,' for lack of a better word, when you use the Ouroboros," he admits.

"If it weren't for the fact that you're always doing something interesting, I'd hate transforming." Well, at least Elder Scrolls is keeping his attention. Your thought catches your attention, and you note that Ekko's features are very... Snakelike.

Well, obviously they're snakelike, but the problem is, you have no idea if they're masculine or feminine features. You'd been calling Ekko "he" in your head, but maybe you were wrong...

"Hey, Ekko? I know this is kind of a weird question to bring up after knowing you for a few days now, but... Are you a guy or a girl?" Ekko taps a few times on the phone to pull up the map before answering.

"The entrance is to your left. And I am a kwami. We don't reproduce sexually, we're born when a concept is understood."

"Then, do you have a preference?"

"Some of my wielders called me one, some the other," Ekko shrugs. "Pick one and stick with it, and I'll be happy."

The next few days are quick and quiet, the monotony of classes broken apart by conversations with Alya, Ivan, or Marinette. You learn that Alya is the oldest of four children, that Ivan's never had a girlfriend before the one you and the other heroes saved (Mylène, you learn), and that Marinette's parents run a bakery not too far from your house.

The weekend approaches without incident. No more supervillains attack, and wherever Hawk Moth is, he's laying low. Normal crimes are dealt with by the police, never necessitating your intervention, and it would seem your teammates agree, as none of them make an appearance either.

Friday afternoon, you're ready to settle in for a surprisingly normal weekend, either playing video games with Ekko and Marcus or joining Alya and Marinette for some more hero-hunting, when you're approached by your now-familiar desk partner.

"Hey, Alix," you greet. The short girl nods at you with the same confident air she always had. Alix was something of a tomboy, which was a fact painstakingly researched by looking at her and occasionally listening when she seemed interested in something.

"What's up, Luke?" You shrug, not having anything interesting to say. At least, not anything Ekko wouldn't kill you for talking about.

"Cool, so your free tomorrow?" she asks.

"Looks like it," you admit. You hadn't actually made any plans yet.

"Alright! So, you're new and haven't been anywhere, and if you're gonna live in Paris, you've gotta check out the Louvre." Alix lets a proud smile slip as she says, "My dad works there, so I can show you all the cool stuff and skip everything else no problem. Wanna go?"

>A) You were kind of interested... "Sure. Where are we meeting up?"

The Louvre isn't as... Classic as you thought it'd be. You were sure it would be mostly big, stately buildings that King Louis would have seen whenever he looked out of his window, and there was plenty of that, but somehow, the giant glass pyramid had slipped you by. You weren't sure you liked it.

Alix, true to her word, had pulled you through the throng of people gathering at the exhibits she considered "lame," and although a few caught your eye, you don't tell her that. She did manage to get you in "for free," even though you could've sworn you saw her sneak some money into the ticket collector's hand. Either way, you're here on either her time or her money, so what she says goes.

You end up in one of the historical exhibits, this one focused on a favorite of museums around the world: Ancient Egypt. "Yeah, dad helped them put this together," Alix brags, sweeping her arms to gesture towards the artifacts. Just looking at them makes the room feel arid and hot, and the themed stonework doesn't help.

"They're supposed to be organized by age, according to dad, but the museum wanted a 'focal point,'" she explains, "so the sarcophagus takes center stage." Said casket was propped up so that it was nearly standing, giving a clear view while still being angled to look as though it were in use.

The two of you take a few moments to split up and truly take in the exhibit. Without Alix dragging you, you're able to take some time to read about what's on display. Because of Alix dragging you here, you've gotten lucky enough to have the room to yourselves. Your head wanders a bit as you saunter from piece to piece.

Lapine had said she knew artifacts, right? She had even mentioned Egypt specifically. You wonder if she had been here yet, as her real self behind the mask, or if she were planning to make the trip. Perhaps she would, and it would only be a few days after that when Lapine would str-

Your thoughts are cut off by a sudden impact and a light gasp. You've walked directly into Alix in your stupor, and thanks to your size advantage, she was the one who took the hit harder. You try to grab her arm, but you aren't fast enough. You hear something snap.

Alix pushes herself up from the plinth with horror on her feature. Beneath her, a golden staff lies snapped in two, age making it brittle enough even for Alix's weight to break. You can feel panic rising in your chest before Alix breaks the silence.

"I am so dead..."

You have no idea what the penalty is for destroying ancient artifacts, especially ones that have been displayed in public museum. There’s a moment of panic when you consider that Alix may see the whole thing as your fault.

“Why did you PUSH me?!” Well, at least you didn't worry about it for too long.

“It was an accident!” you insist, but it doesn’t seem like she’s listening to you. Alix begins to pace, grasping at her hair and muttering in a high, panicked pitch. Her eyes are locked onto the broken staff, and Ekko takes advantage of the distraction.

“The Ouroboros could fix it,” he hisses into your ear, “but you’ve only got a few seconds.”

“How am I going to transform in a few seconds without her seeing?” you hiss back, so quietly even you can barely make out your words.

“I don’t know,” he admits, “and I’m not sure you should, but you are my wielder and deserve to know your options.” With that, Ekko slithers back into your jacket, awaiting your decision. Leaving it like this could be really bad for Lucas, but fixing it may be worse. The staff is ruined, and fixing it so perfectly so quickly would be obviously supernatural, even if Alix isn’t present to see how you do it. What should you do?

>A) Don’t fix it. No matter how bad it is, you messed up and should be held accountable for it.
>B) Get her out of here so you can quickly transform and fix it, even if it risks Alix’s suspicion.

“Alix, you need to find somebody to talk to,” you tell her.

“This sort of thing happens all the time, right?” Alix turns to look at you and blinks, obviously going over in her head if the destruction of artifacts was really a common occurrence. Before she can figure it out, you put a hand on both her shoulders and gently guide her out of the hall.

“I’m sure your dad’s told you about it, and it’s not like the museum can just right it off when stuff like this happens, so they’ve got someone to fix them,” you faux-explain. You have no idea what you’re talking about, but Marcus has impressed on you many times the importance of looking like you know what you’re doing. It is, after all, the advice you fall back on when out and about as Mehen.

“Uh, I guess so…” It seems to be working. “Great!” you say with a plastered grin. “So, you look for someone over there,” you point down the hallway, “and I’ll look over here,” you say as you point the other direction. You don’t give her time to answer before you streak down the hall and around the first corner. It takes a couple of your precious seconds, but you finally here Alix’s footsteps run in the indicated direction. You don’t waste any more time.

“Bare my Fangs!” You charge back into the exhibit through the dizzying flood of power, and in a single jump, land directly in front of the crushed staff. You pick up the two largest pieces and say a quick prayer that you were fast enough.

“Ouroboros!” The sticks silently pop out of your hands, and the whole staff is reassembled in its proper place. Without another Alix and Lucas to smash it, this iteration simply stays in place, unmoved and unbroken. You’re nervous for a moment and wonder if the staff won’t simply fall apart once your power runs out, but a quiet “Hide my Fangs” proves you wrong. Even without being trapped in time, the staff is whole.

Ekko seems tired, but much less so than the last few times you’ve used your power. It must not be as bad when it’s that quick. “How did you know it would work?” you ask him.
“It’s a logic thing,” he explains with a small yawn. “The time loop returns the object to its state a few seconds earlier, exactly as it was at the moment. Everything that happens afterward is not connected to the original series of events, therefore, whatever iteration of the object is the last when the effect ends will be the one carried forward in time,” he summarizes.

(CONTINUED)

>>2231625
“Could… Could you bring people back from the dead like that?” you ask, your eyes wide. You had never considered the possibility before now.

“Can and have,” he yawns again, before burrowing into your jacket and ending the conversation. You were about to ask about the “have” part, too… Oh well. Alix is bound to bring someone back at some point and discovered the restored staff. Where will you be when she does?

Just say Mehen was here to check out the Egyptian exhibit since we are named after an Egyptian God or something. Wouldn't be farfetched to say that he'd be interested in checking the place out.

It’s an easy thing to hide behind the very same corner and wait. Your ear perks up at every footstep, but you ignore anyone simply walking silently. If Alix is going to bring someone to investigate a ruined exhibit, they’ll either be running to save what they can or talking about what happened.
Sure enough, two frantic pairs of footsteps tear down the hallway and into the exhibit. You wait for the count of five, then run in after them. The first thing you see is Alix, looking gobsmacked, next to an incredulous young man - nonetheless older than you - with a bookish demeanor. When he turns to regard your classmate, you're struck by how much he resembles her.

“Alix, is this some kind of prank? The scepter’s fine,” he says. The look of confusion slowly morphs into one of concern when Alix doesn’t confess to a poorly-thought-out joke.

“It- it was- I-” You feel bad for confusing her so thoroughly, but at least she isn’t in trouble.

“Alix?” you say, faking a slight pant in your voice. She whirls towards you and points at the staff.

“It’s fixed!” she screams as if demanding to know why the world hadn’t collapsed at the revelation. “What did- It was BROKEN! I saw it!” she insists. The older guy takes a step away, suddenly wary of her now that she was swinging her arms to point at things. “Look, Alix,” he says in a voice that attempted to comfort her, “maybe stress is getting to you. You did just start school again…”

>A) Back her up and make sure she doesn’t look crazy. “I saw it too, sir. It was broken in half.”
>B) Insist that nothing happened. If no one thinks the staff was broken, no one will look for an explanation. “Alix, are you okay? We can come back some other time if you need to.”

“I saw it too, sir,” you interject. The staff member raises a skeptical eyebrow at you, but he doesn’t interrupt. “It was broken in half. I walked into her without looking, she tripped, and we went to look for an employee.”

“That’s… Exactly what Alix said happened.” He looks at the staff, brow knitted in confusion. “Then how is it back to normal?” He takes a step closer to study it, only to be stopped when Alix socks him in the arm. You let your jaw drop as you gape. You had just saved her from some kind of prison sentence or fine, and now she’s assaulting people?!

“So you believe him and not me?!” she snaps. To his credit, he recovers quickly. “You’re not supposed to believe the first thing you hear,” he points out while rubbing the sore spot, “even if it is from your sister.” Oh. Well, that explained the resemblance, why she went to him, and the punch that wasn’t going to get anyone in more trouble.

“But two people claiming to see the same thing… That’s something to, at least, investigate.” The man continues forward, stroking his chin and mumbling to himself as he looks over the staff. Alix rolls her eyes and, for your benefit, introduces him. “My brother, Jalil. He’s working for dad while he finishes school,” she explains. You mime shaking a hand at his back in lieu of proper introductions, and Alix blows air out of her nose. You’ve finally managed to become as funny as a cat video.

“It may be a kind of magic,” Jalil finally says, awe already filling his voice. “You think so?” Alix asks, and Jalil turns on his heel and marches out of the room, “I’m not sure yet,” he exclaims as he goes, “but there’s got to be an answer! Magic! Oh, man, if I discover a magical artifact...” He disappears into the hallway to begin his research, leaving you and Alix alone again.

“So…” she begins, tapping a toe against the floor, “I guess we’re done with the Louvre?”

You close the door to your room with a small smile on your face. You’re happy that your trip with Alix ended well, even if there were some… Hardships. You take off your jacket and toss it on the bed, leaving Ekko to crawl of the heap. He doesn’t get far before there’s a knock at your door, and he dives into your hood to hide. Once he’s safe, you open the door.

“What’s up, little man?” Marcus asks. He doesn’t wait for an answer before he messes up your hair and steps in. You straighten it again and close the door, and catch Marcus talking to Ekko.

“You look like hell,” he comments.

“I don’t feel much better,” Ekko replies. Marcus gives him a little pat, and you flop down in your desk chair. “What’d you do to wear him out so much, Lucas?” your brother asks, and as soon as you open your mouth, Ekko supplies an answer.
“He used me to save his date,” the kwami gripes. It’s exactly the wrong answer.

Really?[/]i” Marcus asks with a massive grin. “Not even a full week of school and you’ve already got girls lining up, you little heartbreaker.” He punctuates the quip with a soft punch on your shoulder before continuing, “Why am I only hearing about this now, from our resident snake god? Couldn’t even drop me a heads up for your first date?”

You look at him in silence just long enough for him to look unsure before saying, “Oh, is it my turn now? Well, it was not a date,” you clarify with a dirty look at Ekko. He seems to be asleep, but he flicks a forked tongue at you, so you can’t be certain. “And I had to use my powers to save a national treasure, thank you very much.”

“Mm,” Marcus grunts, “‘It wasn’t a date’? Ekko, how’d they get in the museum?”

“She paid for him.”

“You’re supposed to be asleep!” you hiss at the kwami, who hasn’t opened his eyes. Despite his lack of vision, his… Lips? Lips curl up into a smile.

Marcus leans his back against your wall, eyes closed and a finger in the air, as he says in a scholar's tone, “Friends are meant to split the bill,” he points the finger at you and opens one eye in a wink, “but dates pay all to make it real. Of course, typically the guy pays, but we live in a more modern and enlightened time.” You groan at his teasing and spin your chair back towards your monitor, doing your best to let his chuckles, and their much quieter echoes, roll off your back.

“Aw, c’mon, I’m just messing with you,” Marcus swears, spinning your chair back around. “You’re 15 and live in the City of Love, Lucas, it’s a natural assumption.” You grunt instead of answering, and Marcus gives a dramatic sigh and flops onto your bed, causing Ekko to pop into the air for a moment. He doesn’t “wake up” when he lands.

“Don’t tell me I’m related to one of those ‘Married to the job’ type superheroes, Lucas, I don’t think my heart could take it. I wanna be Uncle Marcus someday!” He clutches at his chest and pouts at you. You continue to say nothing and glare at him.

“Okay, fine, but there’s gotta be someone you’ve looked at, right? You run around girls in skin-tight outfits and go to a school in Paris. Do you at least have a preference between normal girl and super girl?”

>A) Well, some of the girls in your class are, uh, nice, and don’t come with the headaches that certain superpowered girls do. “If I’m going to date someone, I’d like it to be a break from running around and fighting people.”

Far more resistance than the normal girls, especially if Mister Cataclysm gets jealous. Though, I'm kind of assuming Ladybug isn't *entirely* in a league of her own when it comes to looks.
Also I forgot that this was the first real appearance of the Miraculouses, rather than later on when everyone kinda figures they're already a couple. Still A, but for slightly different reasons.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Still, it's something Ekko would have to take the lead on. Kwamis apparently take some form of orders, which leads to unfortunate implications if Louis is the driving force. All in all, an interesting thought probably best left out of the quest's canon.

“If I’m going to date someone, I’d like it to be a break from running around and fighting people,” you tell him. Rather than crack a joke or make fun of you for giving up on Ladybug and Lapine so quickly, Marcus strikes a more thoughtful pose.

“I guess that makes more sense,” he admits, stroking the small stubble that prickled at his chin. “Never really thought about needing a break from being a superhero, but…” he trails off, looking much more concerned than when he came in.

“Miraculous Wielders rarely lead peaceful, stress-free lives,” Ekko chimes in, and you can see Marcus shivers slightly.

“Alright,” you interject, “I’m sick of you two having a conversation and not inviting me.” You pull your brother to his feet and push him back towards the door.

“Go to your room, Marcus, I’m tired and I can’t sleep with you mothering me.” That finally get him to laugh, and he playfully wrestles against your shoving. Once he’s outside, you slam the door, only to catch it just before it would hit the frame and shut it normally.

Ekko is smirking at you when you turn around. “What?” you ask him, “You don’t have brothers?”

“A few,” he replies before rolling away from you. He may actually be asleep this time, but you doubt it. Ever since he passed out on top of you after the fight with Ivan, you’ve woken up with him coiled on your chest every morning. Either way, tomorrow is Sunday, and you don’t have any plans. What do you want to do?

>>
>>2234376
Actually I legitimately don't care if we did go gay in quest, my point is that the vote list and it'd be a dick move to force a revote becausenow a few anons have no chance of pushing for their husbando. Like I said, it happened, it's over, and if you weren't here for it then it's on you. That being said, there probably would be anons that would get all pissy or uncomfortable if being gay won.
>>
...have I really been calling Lucas "Louis" all this time? Fuck.

>>2234754
Yeah, there's maybe a couple really, really circumstantial scenarios where I could see a revote being called, but they almost certainly would never happen.
Besides, that's what fanworks are for, to explore things that haven't and/or would never happen in the main story.
>>
>>2234838
Yes, you have been calling Lucas, Louis
>>
Eh, screw it, let's just see how this shit goes. I doubt we'll be getting into waifu's and such anytime soon especially when we've got more important matters to discuss.

Some examples being: to pun or not to pun; what weapon(s?) to use; if we should abuse our powers for personal benefit in-between super-heroing; if we should attempt to correct Ladybug / Marinette's fear of Mehen.

Of course but the problem is that bullying someone who is genuinely afraid of you isn't cute or fun (mostly) and might get us in hot water with the other heroes and with the public which ain't good. It's fine if the villains and criminals hate and fear us, not our teammates however since we need to be able to trust them.

>>2235482
>We'll have a vote later
True but still, something to consider.

>We kind of already have
Not as much as we could though.

>>2235513
>figure it's up to QM for the signature weapon, but boomerang has a nice cycle theme and also potential "boomslang" pun
True but if we're going for a ranged weapon I want a Chakram-snake (literally a razor edged Ouroboros, maybe make it turn into a whip or something?).

>probably not for personal gain, and definitely not frequently
Okay fair enough but, for example, if we were to get a job as a courier / delivery person would you be okay with using it to cut down on travel times and such?

>>2235518
That'd work. Gives us something to fill the thread with and discuss.

See part of me wants a rope dart or similar such chain weapon (meteor hammers sound fun) because they are unconventional yet functional but I am aware of the fact that, for them to be effective, requires we have a good amount of experience using them or natural talent. Not to mention the difficulty of using them reliably in a non-lethal / "safe" manner for times when injury would be dangerous if we lack that experience. The lethality issue being even worse with double daggers of course.

Although I suppose this is true of more or less any weapon, to use it effectively will require training. So honestly I'm just gonna go with whatever fits our character best and works best with our snake theme. Although I would suggest focusing on non-lethal weapons like tonfa or a Monk's spade.

>>2235588
Thanks man.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq8b2dLLMiQ

>>2235644
We need to decide on a weapon for our character, mostly because we got through all the other discussions I raised in one set of posts, and thus this happened. Speaking of which, I thought of another discussion: We need a theme song.

Fuck capatcha!
>>
All these blade weapons feel of to me. They don't seem to fit the Miraculous world(I admit I only watched a couple episodes a year ago). The chain whip would be good, so would a regular old rawhide whip. Miraculouses belong in a museum!
>>
>>2235781
The entire point of the OC kwamis is that they're more mercenary and okay with being dangerous. Brother's been leaning towards having Lucas' weapon having a blade for exactly that reason.

I'm still pretty firmly in the paired daggers camp, myself

>>
>>2235815

I thought the entire point was just to avoid running over canon, not "haha time to be edgy"
Plus as >>2235690 said, if we go for sharp things, there's a good chance we have to depend on Ladybug fixing the various dismemberments and possibly lethalities we inflict.

>>2235991
Good idea, plus gives us vertical mobility like how Ladybug uses her yo-yo.
>>
>>2236052
Thank you for your support but personally I must disagree with a lasso being our weapon, if nothing else because we can achieve the same effect if we have a whip / rope dart and even a modicum of knot-making skill.
>>

The cool air rushes over your suit as you hop across the rooftops. It had been too long since you got to stretch your muscles. You aren’t sure if your moving scarf-tail HAD muscles, but stretching it still felt nice. You hadn’t seen any of the others, but you weren’t expecting to. You haven't scheduled a meeting or anything. The route you’re running is complicated, and you have no idea how effective it is for actually catching a crime in progress, but it takes you all over Paris.

The sun is beginning to dip from its zenith when you take a break. You catch yourself on the roof of a bistro, reasonably secluded from the public while you catch your breath. Nothing had happened so far, but there’s an uncomfortable feeling in your gut, an instinct that something will. For a city with at least two supervillains, Paris had been eerily quiet for the past few days…

“Miss me?” is all the warning you get before a boot catches you on the cheek. The blow sends you reeling, and when you catch your balance, the blue-and-feathered villain from the day Ivan relapsed is standing in front of you, sans the jovial attitude.

“Where did you come from?” you spit, and he points a finger in the air when he answers, “Snakes don’t look up in the wild, either.” He flourishes his fingers, and when they reform into fists, two rods are poking out of his grip, both pointed on each side. “Look, Mehen, last time was fun, don’t get me wrong,” he says in an apologetic tone, spinning the rods in his hand, “We tested each other, broke a few things, had a few laughs…” The small smile that had been building as he talked fades away again. He clenches his fists and the rods stop spinning.

(CONTINUED)
>>
>>2236254
“But this time, you can't walk away.” Before you can respond, he’s on you, and you’re getting an uncomfortably close view of exactly how pointed his weapons are. The instincts you’ve relied on for your past fights kick in once again, and you slap away a thrust he had directed towards your face. Rather than pull back to try again, as you expected, he grabs your wrist with the deflected hand and pulls you into a throw.

You hit the rooftop with a grunt and roll into a crouch. The bluebird walks towards you with a blank expression and spins his rods again, seemingly without moving his fingers. You catch a glimpse of rings on each of his middle fingers, and it clicks why, exactly, he’s using them over a pair of knives: With them attached to the rings, he can’t drop them, which means he’s free to grapple or stab you with both hands.

Well, you aren't going to stand here and take whatever he decides to dish out next. What's your plan?

>A) Run. He ambushed you, he wouldn’t do that if being here didn’t give him an advantage.
>B) Wrestle with him. He can’t stab you if you pin his arms, and thanks to your “tail,” you’ve got one more limb to wrestle with.
>C) Stand and fight him. If he thinks he can scare you with a pair of sewing needles, he’s got another thing coming.

You hold still, just as you did in your first encounter. The bluebird continues to approach, then catches his needles once more. He rears back for an overhead stab, and your scarf snaps towards his ankle. Before he can react, you pull his leg out from under him. He somersaults and lands on his back, and you capitalize with a punch that bounces his head against the rooftop. Instead of following up, you hop away from him.

The decision pays off, as he swipes a needle at nothing but air where your head was only a moment ago. He jumps up from his prone position and moves in again, much quicker this time. You step forward to meet him, and your body seems to take over. You answer every probing jab with an expert block, once or twice catching both his hands before a kick forces you to let go.

Your defense is impenetrable to him, and he’s beginning to slow down, either due to exhaustion or trying to waste less energy as he considers what to do next. Either way, you exploit his weakness. You jerk up a knee, but fail to deliver any sort of kick. Nonetheless, he falls for the feint and drops his guard to catch it. You drive a fist into his nose and he tries to cover his face on reflex, leaving his stomach wide open for a liver punch.

To his credit, he takes the hit with only a grunt, but you see tears in his eyes when you pull back. He holds his elbow against his side, unwilling to drop his weapons completely, and you hear a hissed curse, “Shit, where is he…” This fight could take a turn if you get outnumbered… Then again, you can’t be outnumbered if your first opponent isn’t here.

“You’re about to learn exactly how I changed Lapine’s mind,” you growl. You hope he’s heard the rumors, and the hope pays off when you see the blood drain from his face and his eyes widen. He turns and runs, but just as he reaches the building’s edge, you hear a crack that floors him once again. A white blur launches up and over the ledge, landing beside you and solidifying into the shape of Lapine.

“You two wanna keep it down? Some of us are trying to study,” she gripes, seeming genuinely irritated for a moment. She takes a look at you and gives you a once over, then smiles. “Not a scratch, huh?” You shake your head and turn your attention back towards the prone villain, who still hasn’t recovered from Lapine’s vicious multi-story uppercut.

“Should we cuff him or something?” she asks, but you shake your head. “There’s no point. His power lets him phase through objects. I don’t think there’s any way we can keep him where he doesn’t want to be.” The villain finally begins to struggle to his feet, but when he takes a look behind him to see himself outnumbered, he mumbles into his hand and sinks into the building.

“Gee, Mehen, you think we should go after him?” Lapine asks, rolling her eyes, “Or do you think it’d be as pointless as hunting a real ghost?” You don’t answer, and Lapine takes a seat on the roof. You open your mouth to ask her a question, but whatever it vanished from your mind once you notice a detail you hadn’t before.

“What happened to your gloves?” you ask. She had been wearing them when she landed, but as soon as the bluebird was gone, so were her gloves. She raises an eyebrow at you and she explains in a hesitant voice as if she weren’t sure if she was being tested.

“I… Dismissed them?” she answers, and something seems to click for her. “Oh, wait, you didn’t have your weapon out when I got here! Did your kwami not tell you how to summon it?” You bite your tongue to keep from answering. You were NOT about to admit that Ekko had failed to mention you could do that. Lapine gives a small, dismissive shrug. “Well, it’s pretty easy. You just kinda wish for it to show up, you know?” You weren't sure you did. You had never made a wish powerful enough to summon something into existence. Nonetheless, you take her advice and, as simply as wishing on a star, want a weapon. You’re startled by a sudden weight in your hands. You hold your concrete wish up to your eyes and take in the intricate detail of your new…

The “dart” has more in common with a knife, in your opinion. The piercing point was as sharp as the bluebird’s needles, and the cylindrical shape had been flattened and two edges sharpened into it. Beyond that, the metal was incredibly reflective but surprisingly sparse on decoration.

The dart was surrounded by a cloth-like “hood,” flared not unlike your own. The rope was, again, better compared to a black cord, with a texture of touch crisscrossing fibers giving it a scaled texture. You pull the rope in two separate directions, and while there’s some stretching, you feel as if you’d need to put far more strength into it than even your powered self could manage before you could break it.

“Whoa…” You had forgotten Lapine was there for a moment. You look at her, but she leans away. “Uh, that thing’s pretty… Mean-looking, Mehen. Maybe you should put that away until you need it.” Your not sure what her problem is. Maybe she’s just nervous around knives. For her sake, you “let go” of the rope dart and it slips out of your hands into… Nothing. You thought “summoning” and “dismissing” a weapon would be flashy, but it simply exists one moment and stops the next.

“What were you doing here, any-” you’re cut off by the wind picking up and snatching the words away. The force is nearly enough to push you off of your feet, and despite the sudden roar of a breeze rapidly becoming a torrent of air, you can make out the sound of deep laughter. Clouds roll in from all over and turn a reasonably sunny day into a miserable overcast, with the clouds swirling and writhing at such speeds that you feel dizzy, as if you were about to fall directly upwards and never come back.

The wind begins to make your eyes tear up, but through the haze, you can make out the rough shape of a human floating above the street beside you.

“Ha! You hid very well, Lapine and Mehen, but the STORMCALLER shall always find his quarry! Little bunnies cannot burrow away from the sky forever!” The voice is… Eastern. It could be a German accent or a Russian dialect, but either way, his voice is heavy and reminds you of piles of snow collapsing a weak roof.

You’re blind, you’re exposed, and you have a strong suspicion this is who your bluebird friend was waiting on. What can you do?

>A) Head inside. If his powers control the weather, indoors is the safest place to be.

The dart is in your hands before you realize you asked for it. You give it a twirl to build the momentum before you fling it around your own body. It wraps around you, building speed as it approaches the center, and just as it begins to swing at the right angle, you contract your arms and pull yourself out of the cord. The dart maintains its speed, but without a tether to wrap around, it flies further forward and arcs around Stormcaller.

You give it a tug and pin his arms to his sides, but he doesn’t drop. “Oh ho, a good guess, my slithering friend! But the STORMCALLER is no bird! He is the WIND!” he cries, and the dark figure lifts into the air even higher, dragging you along with him. With the clouds, wind, and small flurries of snow, it’s impossible to see what’s happening. You only have a vague idea of which direction “down” is anymore. The only thing you can be sure of is that it’s cold and you’re holding onto a rope. You pull yourself along it, one hand in front of the other, and continue for what feels like a long time after you lose feeling in your hands. Once you’re close enough to touch him, you wrap your arms around Stormcaller and, hands now occupied, deliver a headbutt to the back of his skull.

The effect is instant, and the world stops spinning. Stormcaller continues along his former momentum for a few moments and breaches the cloud cover, giving you a breathtaking view. The clouds seem to go on forever, and while they may be tumultuous below, up here they bathe in the light of the sun, calmly rolling over one another in a warm, orange light. Then Stormcaller starts to drop.
The breach through the clouds is nowhere near as disorientating. You suspect that without Stormcaller manipulating it, the weather below has calmed down considerably. Once you clear the clouds and see the drearily cast yet normal city of Paris, you let out a small sigh of relief. Now you just need to get the two of you down safely.
You untie Stormcaller’s unconscious body from your rope dart, but keep one arm around him. You aren’t going to let a victim of Hawk Moth’s fall to his death. You scan the city below for something to save yourselves and spot the Eiffel.

That should work…

It’s difficult to angle yourself in a certain direction while holding onto your passenger, but you eventually find the angle to cut through the air in the direction of the tower. Once you’re close enough, you simply allow yourself to fall until the top of the tower is in range. You toss your dart as hard as your enhanced strength will allow, and even through the rushing wind, you hear the clang of the dart digging into the metal.

There’s less than a second before the rope goes taught, and you swing around the tower in a wide circle, rapidly, but safely, bleeding off your momentum. When you land, it’s in a crouch with Stormcaller’s unconscious body in a bridal carry. You gently lay him on the ground as the crowd of Eiffel-goers and tourists chatter in worried voices. There are people recording you. You’re surprised by how uncomfortable it makes you, and you don’t bother to hide your displeasure. You notice a few people put their phones down when they catch sight of your expression.
You don’t have to wait long before a red shape lands a few feet away and jogs towards you.

“Mehen, I am so sorry!” Ladybug exclaims, eyes wide with fear. You aren’t sure if she was scared for you or if she’s scared of you. “I was on the other side of Paris, and I didn’t even notice until the clouds and when I got there, you were already gone!”

“It’s fine,” you grunt. It’s painful to open your mouth. You must have been gritting your teeth insanely hard up there. “I took care of it,” you tell her. You wish you could explain in more detail, but you feel so tired all of a sudden. Words are beyond you. Despite your assurances, Ladybug looks even less comfortable.

“Mehen, I really am sor-” This time, she’s cut off by a rumble beneath your feet. An earthquake? you think to yourself. We’re nowhere near a fault line! Your heart stops as a familiar booming laughter sounds from behind you.

When you turn around, Stormcaller stands atop a pillar of gravel and rock which seems to blend into his dusty brown boots. His arms cross over a military-style jacket, and laughter is sounding from behind the grinning golden mask of a generic-looking king.

“You have done well, little snake! That was quite the trial to overcome! But I am curious to see if you will survive when next you face the QUAKECALLER!” With a dramatic point at you, the pillar shoots back into the ground, taking the newly-christened Quakecaller with it. The stonework seems to knit itself back together, and soon, there is no evidence he was ever there. Ladybug breaks the sudden silence.

"What just happened?!"

You and Ladybug take to the streets in search of Quakecaller. No matter where you look, there’s no sign of him. No rumbles under your feet, no boulders misplaced in the middle of a busy street… At one point, you wonder if he returned to being Skycaller and simply popped out of the ground to fly away, but the clouds he had called were already fading away into the wonderful sunny day you had before his arrival.

As you search, you’re eventually joined by Lapine and Chat Noir, who only need a few details before they widen your search area by a few blocks. Despite their aid, you still find nothing. You and Chat are combing the streets near your home when exhaustion finally hits, and you signal your search partner for a break.

“Hey, you okay?” You're surprised by the concern in Chat’s voice when he approaches your doubled over form. “Fine,” you gasp, “Just need a second…” Chat’s ears flatten a bit and he gives you a sympathetic expression. “How long have you been at it today, Mehen?” he asks.

“I dunno,” you shrug, “Since this morning sometime...” Chat shoots a skeptical glance on the horizon at the slowly rising moon, then fixes you with the same look. “So, you’ve been running around since this morning, got into two fights back to back, according to Lapine, one of which nearly got you dragged into space, and then when on an hours-long search for the guy.” Chat gives you a disbelieving shake of his head.
“How are you still standing?”

>A) You’ve got to protect Paris. It’s that simple. “It’s my job.”
>B) You’re tougher than you look. Laugh off his concern. “There’s a reason snakes are wild animals and cats are house pets. We’re more active.”
>C) You just… Keep going. “I’ve got no idea, if I’m honest…”

I like to think of it as the voters are thoughts and impulses in the MC's head. It's kinda hard to be "Out of Character" as an impulse, so don't worry about it.

“I’ve got no idea, If I’m honest…” you tell him. Chat seems disquieted by the answer. “That’s not really healthy, Mehen,” he points out. Chat slides towards the wall you’re resting against and leans on it himself. “I think I’m starting to get you,” he says, voice low. “You want to be a hero, but not in the same way I want to be one.” You can’t help but perk your ears up. You had yet to discuss motivations with any of your teammates.

“I want to be Chat Noir because Chat Noir is who I really am,” he says. “When I’m the me without the mask, I’ve got responsibilities... “ He trails off and sighs an angry sigh before he continues, “Well, I can’t really tell you about them, I guess, but it keeps me from helping people as much as I want. That’s the difference I’m talking about. I’m trying to be a hero because it’s what I need to do, but it seems like you’re trying to be a hero because it's what people need you to do.”

“I’m not sure I get your point, Chat.” He groans and rubs at his eyes with the palms of his hands. “I dunno, man, I’ve been awake for a while, too,” he grumbles. “What I’m trying to say is, it seems like you’re putting a lot more into this than your getting out of it. Saving Paris is important, but all-day patrols AND fighting supervillains is going to put you in the hospital faster than anything Hawk Moth could do.”

You aren’t sure how many points Chat was trying to make, but you got the gist… You think. He respects that you want to do this, but thinks you’re being to hard on yourself. Maybe. The two of you meet up with the girls a few minutes later to swap mutual stories of finding absolutely nothing. Ladybug isn’t happy about it, and neither are you, but Chat is adamant that running yourselves ragged all night isn’t going to catch Quakecaller any faster. The four of you retire to your homes, uncertainty lingering on what you’d find when you woke up.

Chat confirmed for best boi

“Explain what happened, in detail,” Hawk Moth hums. It’s an unhelpful tone for the two who stood before him, entirely unsure of exactly how much trouble they were in.

“We missed our timing,” the boy in blue admits, hoping that by tying their actions together from the outset, his companion won’t throw him under a bus.

“That we did. The boy was already beaten by the time I found them,” Quakecaller agrees, though not without implying his partner’s incompetence. He had much more to lose by earning Hawk Moth’s displeasure, by his reckoning.

“Hmm… Inconvenient. And when your second set powers activated? Why not simply crush Mehen when you had the element of surprise?” Hawk Moth asks, lingering on the Quakecaller. The Easterner’s heart clenches, but he keeps his voice steady. “Ladybug had found us, and Chat Noir wouldn’t be far behind. By my accounts of their capabilities, sir, I wouldn’t last long against all four, even with his help,” he summarizes, nodding towards the bluebird.

“The issue is that Mehen and Lapine are skilled enough to survive until Ladybug and Chat Noir show up,” the bluebird interjects, wary of being too passive in front of Hawk Moth. “Even if we ambush them alone, they’d manage. Unless we manage to discover their identities and strike at them without their powers, I feel our best bet is to divide and conquer.”

Hawk Moth hums again, though it deepens into a more sour tone. “That could be much more chaotic. The four of them are much more dangerous together, and we can’t plan for them to be foolish enough not to seek each other out, no matter what we do…” There’s a beat of silence while the two let Hawk Moth deliberate.

“I will inform the both of you when I have the answer,” he eventually declares. “With every failure, our task becomes much more difficult. If I am to have Ladybug and Chat Noir’s Miraculouses, Mehen and Lapine must surrender... Or die.”
