The lands of Proelium, a continent cut and divided by sword and fire. Kingdoms and fortresses, bastions of stone, steel, and servitude, stand high above the muck and turmoil. They stand as safeguards against roving gangs of marauders, wild monsters mutated by concentrations of magic, and the armies of Hell themselves.

Beings of darkness and ruin, servants of their respective Lord of Hell, appear seemingly at random through massive Gates to smash against the vanguards of humanity. They are without number. They are unrelenting. Inexhaustible legions with only the desire to fulfill the will of their Lords.

In response to the plight of humanity, the Gods of Light sent down their aid to those chosen few they deemed strong enough to accept the burden of their gifts. Reinforced by divine might and faith, these Paladins stave off the worst the lands of Proelium can throw at them and form Grand Orders to train the next generation of knights to stand against Hell.

At least, that's what the stories say.

You're no God nor Demon, Paladin nor Hell Knight. You're just another mercenary, another disposable meat shield to throw against whatever your current benefactor deems is a threat.

And you hate waking up hours before you need to because of a nightmare you don't remember.

With a sigh and a wince from the headache you have from a long night of drinking, you push yourself out of your cold cot and onto your feet. Walking by the slumbering forms of your fellow mercs, you exit out of the temporary barracks your mercenary group calls home.

The sun's no where near up, as you shiver a bit in the cold morning air, but you continue through the empty streets towards the well anyways.

One of the upsides to being up this early is the fact that there's no need to wait in line or, more commonly, fight your fellow unwashed masses to dump a bucket of freezing cold water over your head.

Only the pinnacles of luxury are afforded to you here at Blackstone Fortress...

Stripping down to your underclothes, you pull the bucket up from where its been residing in this area's aquifer for the night. Taking it into your hands, you look down at the water and the dark, slightly sunken eyes of a...

Man.

Dumping the entire bucket of water over your head just to get the reflection of your worn face out of view, you bite down on your lip as the shock of the freezing liquid runs down your body. After the desire to scream leaves you, you do feel a lot better considering you don't quite feel the hangover anymore nor do you feel like fresh victim of a Southern Necromancer.

It is why you do this to yourself every morning, after all.

Letting the bucket fall back down the well, you push your damp hair out of your eyes as best you can and throw your clothes back on. You're not exactly one for modesty, considering your occupation it's a pretty stupid thing to get hung up on, but you don't want to get sick before the day has even started.

Taking a deep breath of the pre-dawn air, you continue your usual early morning ritual of taking a walk through the streets of your current base of operations.

Blackstone Fortress is a lovely place if all you care about is how thick the stones are between you and the demonic horrors clawing at them are; if you're a person who wants something a bit above that bedrock level of standard its a pretty shit place. Located in the Western portion of Proelium, its far enough inland that you don't have to worry about storms off the coast, but still far enough out from the Heartlands that you're not going to get Paladins or Missionaries wandering in and preaching.

Of course, that comes with the downsides of being too far away for supplies to come by ship and having a few Paladins around would help with the rates of attrition, but you're just going to have to deal with it.

A grim frown takes your face as you walk through the portion of the Fortress where the majority of the medics and healing mages work. Broken weapons and armor litter the sides of the street, either torn out of or off the patients. Occasionally, you spot a few individuals who either died while being worked on or died waiting that the cleaners haven't collected yet.

Its with that grim sight in mind that you head back to the barracks. You're not going to get much in the way of sleep, not anymore anyways. So, you're going to have to pass the time another way.

No, if you're going to have to be woken up this early in the morning, you're going to be training.

Pat might recommend that you rest for the day ahead, but you didn't live this long being a merc by doing things in half measures.

So, going by that, you push your belongings around until you uncover...

Reaching down, you grab the well-worn greatsword from underneath a pile of bloodied clothes.

The blade, a weapon you commissioned when you stopped at a town with better than average blacksmiths, has seen you through many a fight. It was originally a back up for the longsword you inherited from your father, but that's a sword that's long gone... Standing up and strapping the blade to your side, you leave the barracks before you travel any further down that line of thought.

By this point, the sun is just beginning to crest the horizon, which at the bare minimum should give you some visibility to work with. Thankfully, the training grounds, a glorified circle of dirt, are both close by to your barracks and empty.

Without having to worry about hitting anyone in the middle of your swings, you do have a bit of choice in what you can do.

On one hand, you can load down your sword with weights and just practice swinging.

However, if you wanted to work a bit harder, you could envision enemies to fight and go from there; gods know you've fought enough hell-spawn to see them in your sleep.

Then again, you could see if anyone else is up at this hour to spar against.

You've practiced swinging until your arms went numb, and you've already fought against mental imaginations of enemies you've felled, so you might as well see if any other merc has had an early morning.

With that in mind, you start poking around the training grounds. There's a few buildings for storage and the like, but all in all its a pretty bare bones setup.

You are supposed to bring your own equipment with you, after all.

Regardless, a quick walk around the surrounding area doesn't net you anything. Frowning a bit, you turn back to the arena to start practicing your swing when you run into someone you weren't exactly expecting to be up this early.

In the early morning sun, just waiting for you in the middle of the training grounds is...

"Claire?" Calling out, you're a bit surprised to see her out this early. She's pretty much the last person you'd consider a 'morning person'. Hell, it's more of a surprise that she's a merc in the first place with how bad she is in that regard.

"Morgan," She returns your unspoken greeting, though she manages to say you name in a way that's both polite and mildly disgusted.

"What's the problem, wake up on the wrong side of your empty cot?" The brunette narrows her eyes at your implied insult, though you're definitely not going to stop there, "Or is it the opposite? Did you have half the Crow Knights keeping you up again?"

That definitely struck a nerve, as she reaches for where her mace is strapped to her side, "You seem frustrated, Morgan. You get rejected by the harlots again and now you're spoiling for a fight from someone who isn't a cheap whore?"

Taking a step forward, you start to ease your greatsword out of its place at your hip, "No, Claire, you're not a cheap whore".

There's a moment where neither of your talk, the woman silently daring you to finish that sentence.

"You're free".

With that, Claire brings up her shield and charges right at you.

Dice rules are as follows:
> Best of three d100s for basic rolling
> Aptitude and skill relevance will either add a bonus or penalty to the roll
> Rolls must meet or exceed the DC to be considered a success
> Natural 1 rolls are crit failures and overwrite the other two rolls.
> Natural 100 rolls are crit successes that will provide some additional positive outcome to the given situation if relevant.
>Natural 100 rolls can be banked, turning them into normally successes, allowing the players to negate a natural 1 roll further down the line. You can bank three of these.
> DC's will be adjusted to fit the situation. If the players have a viable/creative plan, specifically exploit a weakness, perform well on optional prerequisite rolls, etc. the DC will be lowered.

Your usual strategy when faced with an armored enemy charging for you is to do a minor bit of 'cheating' then attack while they're confused as to what happened. Of course, you're currently on the training grounds and not on the battlefield, and as such you should probably stick to the basics to improve.

With that in mind, you wait for Claire to close in and tense up. As she comes within swinging distance, you dart to the side where her own shield should create a blind spot.

Of course, despite the animosity between the two of you, you're very much aware of the fact that Claire is a very battle-hardened woman. So you're not entirely surprised when she brings her shield around and clips you as you pass.

Rolling with the attack, you bring your greatsword around to counter, but her shield intercepts it cleanly.

The two of you lock eyes as you press against her guard, her expression unchanging as she bulks you off her.

Stepping out of her mace's range, you consider what to do next.

This isn't the first scrap you and Claire have gotten into, and while neither of you exactly keep score she'll be an absolutely smug bitch if she manages to make you conceded without taking a scratch.

With that in mind, you decided to take the initiative this time. Lunging forward, you bring your greatsword up and over your head, narrowing your eyes as you watch Claire match your speed and bring her shield up to block.

So, instead of committing, you bring the long blade around and swing for her unprotected side. To her credit, she manages to get her shield around in time, your sword throwing up sparks as it scrapes against the heavy metal obstacle.

Claire follows your sword, swing her shield out in hopes of knocking your weapon right out of your hands. She's tried this trick before, and this time you're ready for her as you loosen your grip enough to let your greatsword spin between the palms of your hands.

You can't help the satisfied smirk on your face as your rival realizes she's just put you into the perfect stance to attack again while her shield is out of position. Claire grits her teeth, bringing her mace around fast enough to catch your sword just below the teeth.

The advantage is with you at this point, as while she was able to bring her weapon around to block your own, the shield maiden has put herself into an awkward stand; one you can easily press through. Acting in desperation, Claire swings her shield as a weapon, the thin edge of it aimed right for your head.

Of course, with how heavy the shield is, its rather easy for you to duck under the telegraphed attack, a quick jab that cuts a few strands of hair away from her braid before she can fully raise her guard.

Both of you jump back to gain distance at this point, just silently glaring each other down.

Lowering your greatsword to the point where the very end of it is touching the dirt, you fix her with a lazy smirk, "What's the matter, Claire? Are you losing your nerves, or are you just trying to play hard to get?"

Claire's eyes narrow into slits, and with a battle cry she flies at you with mace ready to smash you right in the face.

Which is, of course, exactly what you want. Switching your grip around so that you've got one hand on the hard edge of it and the other right below the guard, you easily duck below her wild attack. Utilizing her own momentum against her, you smash the pommel of your greatsword right into her stomach, Claire wheezing as all the air rushes out of her.

Taking advantage of her stunned state, you swipe her legs from out from under her and throw her into the dirt onto her back. She recovers just in time for you to put a boot on her breastplate and bring your blade up to her neck.

"Alright, alright!" A voice calls out, snapping the two of you towards the source.

A single man walks into the training grounds, inadvertently letting you know that there's more than a few people who came out to watch your spar sometime after it started, and looks at the two of you with a light frown, "Claire, Morgan, I should have known that it was you two beating the shit out of each other first thing in the morning".

"Pat," Nodding to the man, you slowly remove your blade away from her throat and your boot from her chest, "I thought you were busy with a meeting this morning?"

"I was until I got message that two of my best mercs were having a 'spar' with live weapons," He glares at you and, after she gets back to her feet, Claire as well, "I'm aware there's no real rules to the training grounds, but I expect you two to have the minimum level of intelligence to not try to kill each other; especially when you're not wearing your armor, Morgan".

Neither you nor Claire speak up, waiting for Pat to finish up his mild rant. Unfortunately, he's clearly expecting some kind of response.

Glancing down, you note that Pat's right: you just beat Claire without your armor on. Which means that you get to be a bit of a smartass.

You don't fight the shit-eating grin that comes onto your face as you open your mouth, "Oh, that's right; I beat you without armor, Claire".

Pat blanches while Claire looks entirely outraged. Giving the defeated shield maiden a smirk, you turn back to your boss, "Don't worry; next time I'll wear armor while cleaning her clock".

"Morgan..." Your glorious leader rubs his brow, clearly not too happy with your shit, "That's not the point and you know it. We've got a job to do, and if one of your fucks up and nicks the other in the wrong way you're not going to be able to do it. And if you can't do your bloody job, then we're probably all going to get killed. Or worse, we won't get paid".

"Don't be ridiculous, Pat. You know that we're good enough that landing any kind of clean blow, never mind a lethal one, is incredibly difficult. Hell, we've fought so much there's no one else I'd trust to fight bes-" At that, you cut yourself off. Your leader and your rival both give you curious glances, but apparently neither one decides to comment on it.

"Whatever, we've got a job to do. So grab some breakfast, without throwing it at each other, and get ready to go".

Turning on his heel, Pat leaves the training grounds without another word. You want to ask him who he bet on, but unfortunately you can't get it off before he's gone.

That is, until he answers your question without saying a word as he slaps a few coins into another guy's hand on the way out.

"Son of a bitch..." Sliding your sword back into its sheath at your side, you start walking off with Claire hot on your heels towards the mess hall.

That gets her off your back, a frown creasing her face as she backs off.

The two of you walk in tense silence to the mess hall; for a moment, you regret saying that before you crush that errant thought.

Entering into the hall, Claire brushes past you to get on line for food. After a moment, you do as well.

Claire's off on her own, as usual, eating while looking as unapproachable as possible.

There's a few other mercs from your group at another table, you don't really know them too much since they're ranged attackers and you spend absolutely zero time at the back line.

It's purely so she doesn't get full of herself, of course. Someone needs to deflate that big head of hers, otherwise she might get hur- I, I mean, get one of our allies hurt. That's why we need to cover her back - because there's no one else we'd trust to watch over- that is, to be able to weather the consequences of all her fuck-ups.

Y-yeah. It's not like she's only one we have left that can fight on our level or anything. We're just a little tired of befriending our comrades, only to see their faces on the funeral pyre days later.

You decide, after some deliberation, to go take a seat next to the back line guys.

Sitting down, most of them don't acknowledge your presence, but two do.

Will, sharp as ever, nods silently before poking at his slop with a wooden spoon. You've worked with Will before, if only shortly, since your magic worked well with his role of scouting. He doesn't say much, he certainly hasn't said anything to you, but considering he's supposed to be a sneaky bastard no one minds.

"Morgan, right?" Turning to the other individual who isn't talking to someone else, you find yourself looking at your group's enigma: Anri. No one has seen Anri out of armor, even while asleep, so no one's really certain what bits he, or she, is packing. Personally, you have ten silver running on it being a her, because it's always a chick under the armor.

"Yeah, we had a guard shift together back on the road here," You look down at your sorry excuse for food and start miming Will.

Anri, on the other hand, has already finished eating. Not sure how the fuck she managed that, both in the fact that she's wearing a full helmet currently and how she kept it all down.

"That was a pretty impressive duel this morning," Anri continues on, Will looking up curiously at the mention of your fight, "It isn't often we see Claire dueling someone".

"She should; she needs the practice," With a small scowl, you scoop up the first serving of your breakfast and shovel it into your mouth, and instantly regret it, "Whatever. Better question is who did you bet on?"

"Uh..." Anri hesitates, which honestly tells you all you need to know. You look over to Will, who just stares back at you for a few seconds before shrugging.

"Honestly, did anyone bet in my favor?" Your scowl deepens slightly, despite the fact that you're trying to not let it affect you, "I should go join up with whoever those guys were that bet for me back in the training arena; at least they have faith in me".

That gets a laugh out of Anri, who just shakes her head, "Most people saw you weren't wearing armor and figured you were going to go down with the first hit. The ones that bet on you were probably just playing the odds".

You just shake your head, "None of you have any faith in me, huh? Well, screw you all".

Even Will snickers at your dramatic comment, the conversation lulling to silence as you all attempt to stomach your breakfast.

Halfway through your bowl, someone flies into the mess hall, drawing the attention of everyone who isn't already talking to someone. The runner whispers something harshly to Pat, who snaps something back. With a slight nod, the runner, well, runs out again.

Your boss stands up and walks briskly over to your side of the room, neatly catching the attention of everyone, Claire included.

"Get your armor, get your weapons; we've got a fight coming up".

With that, Pat walks off, probably to go organize whatever is coming up.

You're tempted to go after Pat and see what's going on, but its not very often that he calls for a rapid deployment and the number of things this could be caused by are not many.

So, you follow along with the rest of your group, Claire included, out of the mess hall. The scene outside doesn't help your nerves as you're not the only team of mercs being called into action right the hell now, as the streets are filled with mercs scrambling to get ready.

With a new sense of urgency, the lot of you sprint for your barracks. All of you get to your cots, and you reach under it to grab your armor.

Its an old set of armor, with multiple scars and scratches marring its surface. Even so, the armor has served you through many battles; with any luck, it'll serve you through yet another one.

Pulling the straps tight against you, you make sure that everything is properly in order before slipping your helmet on.

Standing at attention, you're now in the phase of waiting for Pat to arrive with whatever the hell it is you're supposed to be doing.

"You still have that armor?" Claire speaks up from next to you, her voice slightly muffled behind her own helmet, "I thought you got a replacement set a while ago?"

"I don't replace what's not broken," Raising a gauntlet, you give it a once-over and form a fist, "Besides, I'm used to this armor so I'd rather not give it up unless I have to; plus, it looks cool".

Claire snorts, shaking her head underneath her helmet, "Sure it does".

"It does," Glancing down at the brunette, you give her an exaggerated look over, "Are you getting fatter? Looks like you had your armor modified again".

The punch to your side is greatly lessened by the fact that you're in your armor, but it was definitely worth the minor pain as Claire fumes beside you, "S-Shut up, Morgan. I have no needed to get my armor modified, thank you very much".

Her protests don't stop you from snickering at her reaction, though her second attempt to punch you is interrupted by Pat sprinting into the barracks and reaching for his armor.

"Sir," Anri speaks up as your leader gets into his combat gear, "What is our target?"

"Scouts on the northern line have spotted a Hell Gate opening," No one says anything, but you can feel the murmur of concern in everyone in the room, yourself and Claire included. If a Hell Gate is seriously open in the area... Well, you have maybe half a day to close it or you're all going to be dead, "We're being sent in with the 27th Crow Knights, and as many mercs as they can carry, to take that Gate out. Now, get your gear together you Dogs! We've got a battle to win!"

The Crow Knights were, well, sworn Knights to Kingdoms in the South that utilized Giant Crows as their mounts. With a mix of melee and ranged weaponry, the Crow Knights act as skirmishing units to harry and harass enemies then leave before they could retaliate.

Usually, though, they're for carrying around other groups of troops or occasionally ferrying VIPs from place to place; a role you know each and every one of them hate. They act tough, but their bitching is mostly because they're a bunch of whiners who can't handle their drink.

Thankfully, you're no where near the rider, as you're firmly seated on, depending on who you ask, what's either a kludged together deathtrap or a massive pile of dead weight.

You're currently riding in wagon without wheels, or a 'basket' as the engineers refer to them as, with a collection of ropes holding up the corners that's firmly within the grasp of the Giant Crow transporting you towards the faintly pulsing Hell Gate off in the distance.

It's a lovely day out, you note, which is really a mocking twist of luck on the part of the gods since a lot of you are about to die.

Across from you sit Anri and Will, doing yet another check of their various equipment and weapons.

Up by the front, Pat's leaning out of the basket as far as he can get away with to get a better view of the coming battlefield.

Finally, Claire's sitting at the back just watching the rocky mountain forest below you go by.

You've checked your greatsword for damage or rust for the fifth time this flight, and you're starting to get a bit fidgety with the nervous energy in your veins. Might as well do something while you're just waiting to get to the fight.

After a few seconds of thought, you get up in a low crouch and carefully walk over to where Pat is.

Your boss glances over at you before turning back towards the coming battle, "Hey Morgan".

"Hey Pat," Sitting down next to the guy, you note that he's clenching and unclenching his fist, "...Nervous?"

Pat looks back to you, just barely hearing your hushed tone, "...Yeah".

He sighs, deflating a bit and turning towards you properly, "I'm not going to lie to you, Morgan, this is going to a brutal fight. We've got a fair amount of mercs, yeah, but we've only got a handful of Mage Squads and look at where the Gate is: a massive flatland with no terrain whatsoever".

Glancing over, you note that he's right; the Hell Gate is right in the middle of flatlands.

"It's going to be a slaughter, Morgan, and we're going right into the meat grinder," Pat looks away from you again, clearly not wanting to show weakness to you or anyone else in the group.

Everyone here signed up for this, Pat. Only an idiot doesn't realize they might be selling away their life when they become a sword-for-hire. Sure, no one HOPES to die, but we all knew it could happen one day.

So don't kill yourself over us dying, or all we'll get out of it is one less man on the field. And we need our glorious leader most of all, or we're all dead for sure. Who else is there who could get everyone to do what needs doing?

Mage Squads that specialize in destroying Hell Gates are almost entirely composed of mages with a focus on long range, high damage spells. So in terms of concealment spells? Almost none.

You're currently flying right into enemy-held ground; you can't play defensively against a Hell Gate otherwise you'll just get overrun.

And lastly, you're in pretty mountainous terrain, so the bedrock layer is relatively high; any trenches made will be rather shallow.

Sighing a bit, you take a moment to consider what to say. You're not one for pep talks, your version of 'cheering up' involves several mugs of alcohol, but you suppose you could make an attempt at it.

With a bare flicker of your magic, a small light flies in front of Pat's face, snapping him out of his thoughts. Grabbing his shoulder tightly and turning him around, you clear you throat, "I know it's not easy, Pat, but you can't save everyone. We're probably going to lose people, and that hurts, but everyone here signed up for this position; to be under your command. We know the stakes, we know we're selling our lives away here, and we know that it'll probably kill us one day. Granted, no one wants to die, but we're aware of the reality of our situation. So, we'll try as hard as we can to keep everyone together, but we need you Pat to keep your shit together and lead us to victory. Besides, you've got me and Claire; we're going to cleave these monstrosities into oblivion".

Pat's silent after you stop talking, clearly thinking things over. He's about to open his mouth to reply when a bell next to the two of you starts rapidly ringing.

With that, your boss is back to his usual attitude, "ALRIGHT, GET READY TO DROP YOU DOGS!"

A triumphant battle cry resounds from the group as you all get ready to go.

The Crow Knight swoops down and bleeds off speed as fast as he can, giving you the chance to vault over the side. With a slight grunt, you absorb the several meter drop without issue and draw your sword. You're in enemy territory now, and getting attacked right after a drop is fairly common.

Pat lands beside you, already motioning for you all to get to the treeline, "MOVE, MOVE, MOVE! OUT OF THE OPEN!"

With a quick run, the lot of you take off while the Crow Knight bugs out. Breaking the treeline, your boss is already getting you all organized and ready for a fight. You're sent off one by one, until Pat gets to you. He puts you with...

"Surprised to see you here, Morgan," She looks over where the ranged mercs are checking over their heavy crossbows, "But I'm glad to have you anyways".

Drawing your greatsword, you tap it against the ground, "I'll do what I can to make your lives easier".

With that, the lot of you start marching. Everyone's head is on a swivel, as walking through a demon-infested forest is about at the bottom of the list of things you'd want to do.

Without the rest of the slowing you down, you make good time through the rocky forest. Even the medium armor you're wearing doesn't slow you down, as you've grown accustom to the weight from the years you've been fighting in it.

Your pleasant stroll comes to a stop and you duck behind a nearby tree as you pick up the subtle sound of something moving around. After a few seconds of waiting, you're rewarded for your patience as two undead humanoids shuffle into view.

They're wearing the tattered remains of armor, and are both grasping spears in their hands.

A quick look around tells you that its just the two of them, for now. The sounds of battle might attract other of their kind, or they may have other waiting in ambush.

After some thought, you decide to simply trip the ambush yourself.

After all, very rarely is the bait expected to a trap in and of himself.

With that in mind, you stand up and casually walk right into the open. The two spearmen moan as you approach, their tattered arms swinging their weapons right at you.

But you ignore this, not even bothering to raise your sword as you continue your march.

As one, the spearmen lunge forward, accompanied by two bolts that tear through the foliage; all four strikes puncture straight through your chest.

You hear a distinctly confused sound coming from where the other two must be just out of sight as your illusion dissipates around the two spears, you yourself circling around the area while invisible.

It's a common trick for yourself, one you've used so many times you've lost count, but it's also one that very much works.

The advantage is very much in your favor now; this is the time to strike.

You decide on killing the crossbow users first. Once they're gone, cleaning up the spears won't be an issue.

Slinking through the forest like a wraith, you find the first of your victims clumsily attempting to reload its weapon.

It never gets a chance to get any further, as one armored hand reaches out and grabs it by whats left of its face, dragging it forward before running it cleanly through. Pulling your greatsword up, you cleave apart its upper body and drop it onto the ground as a twitching, broken mass.

The second hears the death of its fellow monster, turning around just in time to see you break invisibility and throw your sword like a spear. The heavy blade hits right on target, impaling it through the chest and pinning it to the tree behind it.

The two spearmen realize something is wrong, the feeling becoming reality as you pull your sword free with a simple pull and you stalk towards them.

One of them doesn't get chance to react, as your greatsword cuts through its neck like it doesn't even exist. Taking advantage of the new meat shield suddenly in front of you, you throw the headless corpse of the undead creature onto its friend's spear, snapping the brittle weapon.

It has half a second to look surprised at your actions before you bring your blade down on top of its head.

The two brutalized corpses fall to the ground one after the other, you ignore this in favor of checking the area for any other enemies. The land around you is silent, though you don't spot any incoming threats.

Lowering your sword, you consider what to do next.

Thinking on it, your decision is made for you when Anri steps through the treeline along with the rest of the group. Their weapons are semi-raised, which you makes you frown a bit at how relaxed their being.

Either way, you shake clean your sword and walk over to them.

"Good work, Morgan," Anri glances about, mimicking your vigilance around the situation.

The rest of the guys glance at the rotting corpses littering the ground, muttering to one another.

"Where's Will?" Continuing on, you walk forward with Anri at your side, "The demons are lying in ambush; if he's not careful he's going to walk right into a trap".

"Will's off scouting the terrain," You can't tell much from her voice, but there is definitely concern in it, "And they're setting ambushes? That's... not a good sign".

"Yeah, it isn't," Pushing aside a few branches, you can't help the frown on your face from deepening, "C'mon, we've got to push through this forest to get to their main lines".

The rest of the trek through the forest is uneventful, likely due to the fact that the demons haven't had enough time to push into this area, and you make it through without issue.

Of course, this is really where the issues begin.

Clearing the treeline, you find yourself at the top of a shallow cliff with a rather commanding view of the surrounding area.

Way out ahead of you is the Hell Gate in question, pulsing away with the energies of the plane its pulling power out of. The army it is forming surrounds the gate, clearly not given enough time to properly entrench. Which is a good thing, since it means that you won't have to push your way through prepared positions to get to the objective.

Coming from the direction of Blackstone Fortress is the bulk of your allied forces, forming up around the precious few Mage Squads that'll be so essential in destroying the Pillars holding a Gate of this size in reality.

You and your group and on the left flank of your allies and, after a few minutes of waiting, the rest of your mercenaries clear the treeline. A few of them look scrapped up, but most of them, including Claire, got through without an issue.

"ALRIGHT!" Pat walks up to the very edge of the cliff side, neatly gathering the attention of those present, "LISTEN UP YOU DOGS! WE'RE GOING TO BE PRESSURING THIS FLANK ON THE ENEMY, AS WELL AS SUPPORTING AND REINFORCING THE RIGHT FLANK OF OUR ALLIES!" He points down right towards where the Mage Squads are making their final preparations, "THOSE SOFT BITCHES WE CALL MAGES DOWN THERE ARE GOING TO NEED TIME TO TAKE OUT THE PILLARS! IT'S OUR JOB TO MAKE SURE THEY DON'T GET SLAUGHTERED BEFORE THEY CAN DO THEIRS! NOW, WHO'S READY TO GET INTO THE FIGHT YOU DOGS!?"

You know it definitely takes a load off your boss' shoulders to have you volunteer, as you can see him relax by a fraction, "YOU HEAR THAT? THE REAVER OF SAINT PETER'S KEEP IS GOING HEADFIRST TOWARDS THE BREACH! WHAT DO ANY OF YOU SAY TO THAT, ANY OF YOU PUSSIES GOING TO STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE!?"

At the mention of that nickname, you can't help but frown a bit; how many times have you told Pat you hate that nickname...

"I will!" Glancing to the side, you see Claire stepping up.

Pat smiles at both of you, "Good, I want the two of you to cause as much havoc as you can; break up their lines, take out their best, and help the other merc companies. Now, get going; we've got a Hell Gate to destroy".

With a look, you, Claire, and the other members of your team who will be joining you, walk up to the edge of the cliff before jumping right down it.

If you're going to be fighting Hell, you might as well enter in style.

Sliding down the side of the cliff is an exhilarating experience, the wind whipping by causing your armor to make a high-pitched whistling noise.

Looking ahead of you, you note a full squadron of undead warriors moving. Pushing yourself up, you dig your feet in and sprint hard straight down the slope.

With a single, massive leap, you bring your greatsword down point-first right onto the head of the squad's leader. It dies without making a sound, its body turning to pulp as you crush it under foot.

Whipping your blade out and around, you smash right through their feeble armor and weapons. By the time Claire makes it to you, the entire squad lies in pieces at your feet.

Nodding to her, the lot of you take off for where the main line is barely a hundred meters ahead.

You and Claire easily outpace the other, her shield coming down as she gets ready to crash right through their front line.

Well, if she's going in for a glory charge, you're sure as hell not going to get left behind.

So lowering your left shoulder and maintain pace with her, you and Claire smash into the enemy's lines in tandem.

The first of the demons crumble before your impacts, skulls shattering upon contact with your unified front. As one, you bring your greatsword around as the brunette sweeps the other side with her mace, further widening up the gap.

Now you're truly in the thick of things, smacking aside a hasty slash and crushing the foe with your pommel. The next is another spear user, which you dispatch after cleaving through its weapon, then its chest.

Claire is right next to you, her mace and shield both shattering bone as she gets into the grove of things.

After she's done smashing the nearest undead to pieces, Claire looks over at you and the two of you nod before continuing to charging forward into the mayhem.

Behind the front line, there aren't quite as many enemies, but the few demons that do attempt to halt your advance end up crush under boot without either of you slowing down.

And it's because of the higher forms, taller, sleeker undead that move far more smoothly than anything so far beyond death should that are striding towards your incursion.

You know that the majority of the mercenaries behind you can't take these kinds of demons, which is why you and Claire and charging for them.

Reaching out with your hand, a series of explosions drop right on top of the higher forms of demons. Well, it's not actually a damaging attack, but the flurry of light, sound, and the illusion of heat provides just as much shock and awe as the average Mage's strike without needed nearly as much mana.

Claire rushes right past the dazed enemies, smashing her shield right into the tall skeleton's side and knocking it to the ground. Raising her mace up, she brings it down with a single strike that destroys the demon's head.

With it down, you immediately look around for the next target, only for that decision to be made for you as one with a pair of wickedly curved sickles blindsides Claire. The brunette fumbles into the dirt in a heap, barely raising her shield up to block a lethal strike to the neck.

Running forward, your jab is diverted to the side though it does accomplish your goal of getting it off the shield maiden. The demon leaps back with an unsettling grace, eyeing you with what could be curiosity.

Gritting your teeth, you raise your sword as it rushes right for you as Claire struggles to get back to her feet, the weight of her armor holding her down.

Narrowing your eyes, you grab your greatsword by the edge and the grip and firmly interpose it between you and the demon. The skeleton brings both of its sickles down on your guard, making you grunt out in exertion as the monster puts its entire weight against you. The awkward position you're forced into makes you take a step back to keep your balance before you're able to push back and throw it off you.

The skeleton easily dances back, throwing a sequence of three knives straight at you in the middle of a jump. Betting on the integrity of your gauntlet's armor, you bat aside the sharp projectiles and launch your greatsword right at it in response. The weapon slams into its chest, the demon unable to dodge as it was still in the middle of the air and you breath a sigh of relief as it goes down permanently.

Claire finally pushes herself to her feet at this point, glancing around your quiet section of the battlefield in between sneaking glances at you.

And what a battlefield it is; you can hear the war cries and clashes of weapons as they mull together into a constant undertone. Despite the fact that you don't have a good vantage point, you can tell the main force is being pushed extremely hard by the bulk of the demon army.

That observation of yours, thankfully, is adjusted slightly as a line of very real explosions rip through the ball of undead monsters.

"The mages finally got their shit together, huh?" The brunette speaks up as she walks up beside you, watching the fireworks along with you.

You don't say anything in response, though you do grunt in affirmation.

As if to one-up the previous attack, great arcs of flame fly through the air and rip gouges out of the scattered undead formation. To top it all off, a great bolt of lightning comes into existence and crosses over the battlefield in an instant.

With this, you know the Mages are finally able to target the Pillars keeping the Hell Gate into existence, which means that your job is about to get a lot easier.

Of course, that hope is entirely crushed as the bolt of lightning slams into a great barrier and deflects off it.

"Shit..." You and Claire speak up at the same time, a wordless understanding passing through the two of you. The demons have magic users of their own that they're holding in reserve, and unless you kill them you're not going to take out the Gate before they amass an army to wipe you all out.

Looking around, you've got a relatively clear shot to the Gate from here. You might be able to get there before they realize you're there.

On the other hand, you could both run for where Pat is assisting the main line in holding against the renewed assault. You'll have to fight through more enemies, but you'll also have more allies to help you make the push.

You have to make a choice...

Sighing heavily, walk over to where your greatsword is still firmly buried into the corpse of that light-footed sickle demon and pull it out with a faint squishing noise. Checking over the blade to make sure there's no serious damage to it, you sheath the sword and crack your knuckles, getting ready for the monumental task ahead of you.

"You're going after those mages, aren't you?" Claire practically reads your mind, despite not being able see your face.

"Yeah, I am; if anyone's going to be able to get the Gate and take them out, it would be the 'Reaver', wouldn't it?" Turning towards the portal to Hell, you're about to start walking towards it when a gauntlet-clad hand clamps down on your shoulder.

Looking over your shoulder, you see the brunette brushing herself off with one hand while she holds you back with the other, "Well, you're not going alone, that's for damn sure".

You just shake her grip off your shoulder, "I don't need your help".

At this point, you attempt to walk off in order to end the conversation, only for your action to be rudely interrupted as Claire smacks you in the back with her shield, "Tough shit; you're getting it anyway".

"...Whatever," Looking out over the ruined and scorched ground from the numerous spells being flung against the magic shield, you start planning your route to actually get to the gate itself, "Try to keep up, and don't slow me down".

Making sure Claire ready to go, you begin sprinting across the field.

The battle absolutely rages around you, especially since the effort of the Mage Squads redoubles when massive blue bolts of energy begin flying from the base of the Gate.

You just focus on sprinting over the uneven and disturbed earth, rather than on the groups of men being pummeled by magical artillery.

The dead sprint is completely interrupted by a blast of fire that bounces off the massive shield and comes straight for you. Turning and tackling Claire to the ground, both of your grunt in pain as the spell goes off meters away and covers both of you in dirt.

"C'MON!" Raising your voice, you pull the stunned shield maiden to her feet and force her to keep running.

Things are a bit better from there on, as you make it closer and closer to the demon's shield. Thankfully, the shield itself is a simple, single-direction type which means that you and Claire are able to simply run in from the side.

Once you're within the protection of the shield, it becomes extremely obvious what the source of it is as a group of a dozen chanting demons holding glowing candlestick aloft. You note that they all pause for a brief moment when the next wave of attacks slam futility against the barrier, as if they have to focus harder to maintain the shield.

Two of them, away from the group chanting, turn towards you and raise up their candlesticks, clearly about to fling spells at the two of you.

Without a word between you, you and Claire split up and start running in serpentine towards the two sorcerers.

They fire smaller versions of the magical artillery at you two. You grit your teeth and rapidly switch directions, hoping to throw off the demon's aim. It works for the most part, several bolts of magic flying past you without connecting but one clips you and nearly spins you around as it connects with your shoulder.

Ignoring the pain as it flares up, you push forward those last few meters and bury your greatsword into the sorcerer's head. Gripping the weapon tightly, you pull the blade down and eviscerate your target.

A second later, Claire smashes into her target, turning its head into paste with a single blow. She definitely didn't fair as well as you did, as you can see several scorch marks mar the surface of her shield and a piece of armor is well and truly slagged.

Looking over, you see that the Gate is pulsing more and more rapidly, signifying that something is coming through it.

Meanwhile, the choir of sorcerers are still maintaining the barrier which is still fucking with your allied Mages.

"GO MORGAN!" Pointing towards the tightly clumped group of enemies, Claire yells the executive decision to you, "I'LL HOLD WHATEVER COMES OUT OF THE GATE!"

There's no time to object to her decision, as she immediately takes off for where the reinforcements are going to be, so you rush right for the sorcerers.

They're distracted, both by the incoming wave of spells and by the fact that you slam right into the blind spot of them. Caught in close by an enemy with the superior position, weaponry, and reflexes, the magic users are torn asunder one by one as you methodically work through their formation.

One manages to get a snap shot spell off, but your hair trigger reflexes kick in and it doesn't come anywhere near hitting you. That demon doesn't get a second shot off, as you remove the hand holding its spell focus before removing its head.

With that, the handful of remaining spell casters are in a full rout, for all of about five seconds before your sword cleaves them apart. The last of the magic keeping the barrier up fails at that point in time, the next barrage of spells coming through unimpeded and slamming into a nearby Pillar.

The ground shakes, an unearthly screech tears through the area as the Pillar shatters. You don't have the chance to celebrate, as that is the moment at which the Gate flashes and draws the next wave of Hell-spawn onto your plane.

Or, in this case, a single Hell-spawn; a single, tall demon in a billowing cloak with a fire-covered greatsword in one hand and another shining with midnight blue magic in the other. It raises up said magical blade and your blood goes cold as another, much more powerful barrier phases into existence to protect the remaining two Pillars.

Claire is about to scream a warning to you, as she has her back to you and can't see that you're witnessing this scene, when the demon rushes her. The brunette manages to get her shield up in time that she can drop to one knee and angle the shield back to fully take the crushing blow from the flaming blade.

You can see her wince as her entire body shudders from accepting the attack, but it doesn't appear to do any actual damage to her.

Leaving the corpse of the slain choir sorcerers, you sprint over to aid Claire against what is likely the demonic base of this invasion.

Against something this powerful, this experienced in combat, your usual trick of shock and awe isn't going to trick it into flinching. So, you're going to have to get a bit more creative.

Reaching out with a hand, you conjure the blackest cloud of darkness you can manage and stick it right into the demon's eyes.

The effect isn't much, as you're sure this isn't the first time this thing has been blinded, but against someone like Claire that tiny edge is more than enough. She immediately closes in, pressuring the monster by giving one of its legs a solid whack with her mace.

That also has the unintended side effect of telling the demon exactly where the brunette is, it takes a massive step back and the stabs forward with its magical greatsword.

She's able to react in time, her shield coming up to take the lunge. Upon impact, the midnight blue blade flickers, fading to a more basic greatsword, before its owner yanks it back.

Claire on the other hand, is faintly glowing that exact hue of blue as her spell-thieving magic kicks in. With a burst of stolen energy, the demon is knocked back several meters as it blocks a mace strike backed up with its own magic.

The shield maiden backs up, meeting up with you as both sides collect yourselves. The demon stands and moves his swords into a more defensive position, your magic unfortunately dispersed by Claire's own.

You know that you're running on a clock, but there's no reason to rush head first towards your deaths. So that's why you take a defensive position on Claire's right, covering the hole in her defense while you wait for the demon to come for you once more.

It doesn't make you wait for long, its magical sword flaring for a moment as more spells explode uselessly in the background, but it struts forward in its defensive stance. That changes quickly, as it whips the flaming greatsword around and slashes down at you.

Claire takes the attack without an issue, once again siphoning off more energy from the weapon, and knocks aside the follow up strike with another empowered swing on her mace.

You're already moving to take advantage of the chance, driving your blade into the wrist holding the blade supporting the barrier.

For a moment, you think it's howling in pain from your attack, but then you note that the magical greatsword has slipped right out of the hand you just entirely destroyed the tendons of. The weapon flips end over end before clattering against the sullied ground.

The effect of the barrier failing again is immediate, as one Pillar explodes from volleys of magic and the other flickers ominously along with the entire Hell Gate.

The painful howl immediately turns to a rage-induced bellow, the demon lashing out with a kick that knocks Claire back but not off her feet.

The Gate is moments away from collapsing.

The desire to go finish off this demon before it can escape back into Hell is there, your father relentlessly drilled into you that a demon you injured but didn't kill would come back stronger for it, but the fact that the Gate is falling apart right in front of you forces you to pull back for now.

Turning back to get as much distance away from the rapidly destabilized portal, you duck instinctively as the final Pillar is torn asunder. Looking up while continuing to move away from the Gate, your eyes widen as a chunk of the last Pillar, sparking with an overload of mana, lands directly between you and Claire and detonates.

The concussive force slams into you, nearly knocking you out cold as your body is throw like a rag doll.

Your vision waxes and wanes, your ears filled with the dull ringing that tells you that you're still somehow alive. With aching limbs, you force yourself off your back and up onto your hands and knees. Glancing up, you see a disheveled Claire screaming at you despite the fact you can't hear a word she's saying.

Either way, the message gets through your fuzzy head clearly as you grip your greatsword tightly and bring it up just in time to block the demon's attempt to take your head off. Despite the successful block, you're very much at the disadvantage as you have to hold yourself up with one hand against the ground.

The flames coming off the demonic blade lick at your helmet, the demon itself glaring down at you as it tries to overpower you. You manage to match its strength for a few moments, then it no longer matters.

The Gate behind the demon explodes, the structure of it rapidly dissolving around you. The ground cracks and tears, great furrows of the earth being thrown about in the demonic maelstrom. You still can't hear anything but you distinctly hear a slow gathering whine, building up to a great POP.

Then, darkness...

You're not sure how long you're out for, but after a few more moments your hearing, then your vision slowly clears. Taking a deep breath, then immediately regretting it and coughing fitfully as you pull in putrid air, you have to bite down on the urge to panic.

Instincts take over, first flexing your hand to make sure that your greatsword is still beside you then patting down your armor for damage. You've still got your blade and, aside from the usual scrapes, your armor is still in one piece.

That done, you focus on getting back to your feet. Coughing some more as you try to stand up, your head raises to the point where you can fully regard the severity of the situation you're in.

Hell... You're actually in Hell...

Sulfur, ash, and rotting meat float in the air, forcing you to take shallow breaths if you want to breath without vomiting. Far and away, mountains of fire higher than you've ever seen smolder and smoke. Lower down, you think you see something resembling a fortress, but its clearly been corrupted over by the demons living here.

Forcing yourself to your feet, you take a quick look around and note that there's nothing in the immediate vicinity of you. Well, at least things that are alive; several broken corpses that have decayed to the point where they're unrecognizable now.

You're at the top of some mountain side, no obvious way of getting back to the Material Plane. While you're not under attack now, you know that its only a matter of time before the demons start coming so you're going to have to make a choice on what to do next...

There's a moment when the crushing reality of truly sets in. You're in Hell. You're stuck in Hell.

No no no, you can't panic. Not here, not now.

Taking as deep of a breath as you're willing to take, you immediately set off to clear the immediate area around you.

The mountainside around you is clearly volcanic in nature, with great sections of rock broken and jutting into the air. That's good; worst comes to worst you'll have some cover even while you're out in the open.

The uneven rock is a common terrain feature both up and down this hill, so while it is hard to get a good look around you do manage to spot that tall demon from before, now missing its magical greatsword and a large portion of the arm that was holding it, smoothly gliding down the terrain.

You grip your sword tighter at the sight, the desire to kill what's put you in this situation growing within you.

Hell doesn't affect spells, otherwise demon sorcerers would be useless.

>>2218158

You're tempted to openly challenge this demon and get things over with, but you decide to play this smart. So, giving yourself a quick Invisibility spell, you skulk down the mountain side after it.

Trying to keep your footing sure on the uneven ground, you note that whatever this thing is it's clearly heading for something in particular. Maybe it has some kind of base out her-

That train of thought is interrupted as a chunk of rock underneath your foot crumbles, forcing you to reach out to steady yourself. This has the unintended side effect of loudly scrapping metal against stone, the sound of which rings out over the landscape.

The demon immediately whips around, its face staring direct at where you are despite the fact that you're currently invisible.

Whether its due to its injuries or due to the unknown threat, the tall demon opens its mouth and lets loose a wavering wail. After a few seconds, the call is responded to by many, many more.

You have maybe a minute before you're up to your neck in demons.

Not mobs, but Morgan going all out involves a distraction roll and a normal attack roll. For the distraction, if its >50 the enemy rolls at disadvantage, if its >90 the enemy also loses their highest roll after disadvantage is taken into account.

There's a very, very good reason why Morgan is called 'The Reaver'.

>>2218208

Odds are good that you're already surrounded by reinforcements, so there's no point in running away now.

No, you think as you drop your Invisibility and charge right for the demon, you're going to have to tear right through these things if you want to survive.

The demon seems taken off guard by your charge, though it recovers quickly and thrusts forward with its flaming greatsword. The sword goes plunges into your chest, the attack being the last mistake this demon ever makes as your illusion disperses and you sever its remaining hand while it is outstretched from the attack.

Utilizing your existing momentum, you bring your greatsword around and cut right through the leg Claire weakened. The demon screams again as it goes down hard, with only a single limb left intact meaning that it is entirely unable to react as you bury your blade into the side of its neck.

Another monstrosity felled by your hand, brought low by a simple parlor trick...

Putting a boot on its chest, you pull your sword out with a spurt of black blood splattering it. Looking up, you can see the demons that answered this one's call coming at you from multiple directions.

If you want to get out of this, you're going to need to pick a direction and stick with it.

You don't have to turn around to know that the demons of hell are baying at your heels; you just focus on sprinting as quickly as you can.

After a minute straight of hard running, you hear a guttural howl from off on your right. Swooping in on tattered wings, a demonic gargoyle wielding some kind of massive battleaxe in its hand and another adorns the end of its armored tail.

Rock and soil are thrown everywhere as it lands meters ahead from you, a ball of flame forming within its mouth that you assume it plans to spit all over you.

Forming a rough illusion of yourself, you pop Invisibility again and cut to the left while your faux persona heads to the right.

The gargoyle takes the bait, bellowing out a gourd of flame that rakes over your illusion as you run by. The spell dissipates on contact with the attack, but the brightness of the flame itself hides this fact.

Looking over your shoulder, you note the armored demon taking a short hop over to where your corpse should be. Good, you just bought yourself some more time.

Keeping up your invisibility, you continue pushing your way up the hill.

You could keep going, get to the top and then go over the other side of the mountain. However, you don't know if that side is going to be passable and not even you have enough endurance to casually make that journey.

On the other hand, you could cut to the side and either find a crevice to hide out in or come down from the mountain away from where the demons are.

After a moment of thought, you decide to...

Yeah, running yourself ragged is not going to work out well for you. You need to pace yourself, and pushing yourself after fighting a major battle is not the way to do that.

So, after changing your direction so that you are running perpendicular to the hill, you move past several rocky outcroppings to a collection of churned earth and try your best to not collapse into a heap as you get into cover.

You mostly succeed.

Dropping your Invisibility, take deep breaths, forcing yourself to keep them down as your lungs burns from exertion and the putrid air, to regain your strength. Taking a glance out of your hiding spot, you note that gargoyle demon takes off into the air and begins flying about the area.

It circles for several minutes, obviously looking for you, though while it travels right over your head it lets out a roar and continues away from the mountain.

Sighing a bit in relief, you take a look over your sword and confirm that, yes, its still in good enough condition.

With that out of the way, there's nothing left to distract you from the fact that you're in the middle of extremely hostile territory and you're completely out of food or water.

Best case scenario, you'll die in three days from a lack of water. And you really, really don't think you'll be finding any water in Hell.

You're safe, for now, but that's not going to remain forever.

Well, you've got a moment of respite here; might as well take advantage of it.

Grabbing some of the nearby ashes, you rub it against your armor in an attempt to give yourself some camouflage. Will taught you this trick when the two of you used to do recon in force.

Sufficiently smothered in soot, you attempt to get as comfortable as possible in a suit of armor then allow yourself to drift off.

You're taking a nap in hell...

The absurdness of the situation is almost hilarious.

Your sleep is certainly not a deep one, as you really can't get relaxed enough on a pile of rocks in hell.

Regardless, you eventually come back to full consciousness. You assume several hours have passed, though it is hard to tell as the light certainly hasn't changed since you got here.

Either way, you're awake and looking around you don't see a horde of demons baying for your blood thankfully. Looking around, you note that from where you are the fortress is relatively nearby with the mountains of fire in the background of it. The mountainside itself is mostly empty aside from yourself and what looks to be an old, cloaked man further down just walking by.

That's... curious, but not an immediate threat...

Out of everything, the old man seems the most likely to actually help you. Then again, you are in Hell; the dirt you're sitting in is more likely to help you than anything else.

Also, what the hell is an old man doing in Hell?

With that question in mind, you pull your greatsword out of the pile of soot the wind has swept into your hiding spot while you were asleep and begin making your way down the mountainside.

You try your best to sneak up on the old man, but considering you're in open terrain currently anything short of using Invisibility isn't going to help you.

Oddly enough, the man doesn't seem to mind your presence; in fact he calmly waits for you to approach.

"Ah, vigilant Hell Knight," His voice isn't as raspy as you expect from a man with such a level of entropy across his face. There's also the minor fact that a demon is speaking to you in perfect Protalian. And Hell Knight? Well, you are covered in soot currently so perhaps you do look somewhat like one... "I heard word that a Barron had fallen on this mountain; I wasn't able to observe the battle, but I would like to inspect the area. Do you know where I might find this location?"

For a moment, you blanch at his question; is this demon seriously asking about the one you killed? Why would h- it care about another demon? From your experience, they never seemed to have given a shit about the monsters beside them...

Whatever, it's not your problem. With that in mind, you turn slightly and point the old man in the direction of where you fought the demon. You don't say anything; if this demon thinks you're one of those Hell Knights you're not going to prove him wrong.

"Ah, thank you," It looks off in that direction, its rotting face smiling wistfully, "Tihone was a rather interesting Baron; a very powerful magus before he betrayed his Order and joined under my command. Of course, it appears that, like I told him, his arrogance was his downfall. After all, to be slain by a single human is quite the inglorious end for one of his power..."

You don't say anything, trying to maintain your calm as a chill goes down your spine.

"Though, I suppose telling you this is unnecessary; after all, Tihone's blood is splattered along your sword. The soot is a good touch, but it appears you've made an amateur mistake. And so, I have to decide what to do with a human who has encroached upon my domain and killed one of my Barons in single combat..."

The demon disguised as an old man stands up fully, towering over you by half a meter, and pulls aside his cloak to draw an ultra greatsword. His armor is old and battle-torn, but it is still intact and strikes a terrifying image as he cloak and sword appear to ignite.

"I have decided... WE SHALL FIGHT!"

For a moment, neither of you move. The sheer weight of this demon's presence makes you stop and consider what you're going to do next.

The moment ends and you blur as you send out an illusion feint to the left as you swing from the right.

This demon is heads and shoulders above the previous one, and it proves itself by reading your magically enhanced feint, letting the 'attack' hit its armor while bringing its over-sized greatsword up to block your actual attack.

With a smoothness that you don't expect, it brings its sword around and slams against your hastily brought up guard.

The sheer impact of the attack sends you sliding back despite your efforts to retain your footing.

Gritting your teeth, you focus your magic and as you bring your greatsword around to attack, the demon is faced with six perfect illusions alongside the real deal.

It responds to this by slamming its sword into the ground, knocking you off your feet in an explosion of heat.

The sensation of weightlessness is one you have felt before, but not in a situation like this.

Tumbling down the side of the mountain, you crash against the ground once, twice, and a third time before you finally come to a stop half embedded in a rock.

A quick check tells you that nothing is broken, but the groans of stressed metal coming from your armor tell you that your suit has seen better days.

The demon looks to be in no rush to kill you, as he calmly walks down the incline you just got punted down. Forcing yourself to your feet, you wrap your hand tighter around your blade and prepare.

This demon clearly has the advantage, and if your usual tricks aren't going to cut it, you're going to need to change up your strategy.

Which turns out to be a great idea, as the demon leaps into the air and you roll to the side in time to not be crushed upon its landing.

Getting back to your feet, you bring your sword around in time to deflect the next massive blow. Despite the fact that you know you can't block an attack from this thing, that doesn't mean you can't redirect them.

And that's exactly what you do; keeping your greatsword close and using the flat of it to swat aside attack after attack. The ground around and under you is repeatedly torn up from the demon's ultra greatsword sliding through it without an issue. Despite your efforts, you know you can't maintain this pace forever, as the sheer heat of the blade is starting to get to your own sword and the rock flying everywhere continuously chips away at your armor.

You've managed to fight your way to a stalemate, but you can't hold forever and the demon knows this.

>>2218953

Yeah, sitting here and getting pounded into the ground is not going to win you this a fight. So, with that in mind, you bring your sword back up into a defensive stance and wait for the next attack to come.

The demon doesn't leave you waiting for long, bringing its flaming ultra greatsword down in another vicious arc.

By this point, the two of you have been in this routine of attack and defend for several minutes, and you know the regardless of how much experience this demon may have it is going to get complacent after so many repetitions.

You know for a fact that's the case as in the split second it takes for the demon to recover after its sword goes through your illusion rather than being deflected, you bring your own greatsword around and slice the end of it through the demon's shoulder.

Following through the attack, you turn around it and bring your guard back up in time to keep your head from leaving your shoulders. Sliding back with the blow, you dig your heels into the crumbling ground and push back to keep the pressure on.

Despite your successful attack, the demon seems entirely unphased by the cut, which barely bled before closing, and easily defends from your incoming flurry of blows. Switching things up, you change your wide swings into precise jabs, testing this thing's guard.

Which is pretty damn good, if you're willing to admit to yourself, as it easily bulks your strikes regardless of how many illusions or feints you throw in. It's unable to fight back, as you don't give it the chance to, but you're once again in a stalemate.

One that ends as a jab results in the very end of your greatsword snapping off. The demon wastes no time in getting ready to finish you off, bringing its massive blade around as you grit your teeth and do the same with your damaged weapon.

There's no time for trickery or feints, spells or mind games.

No, this last clash is just a flat out gamble; one that you know you've likely already lost. But that doesn't matter, as you're running on nothing more than spite at this point.

And that's all you have left, as you face down heavy, flaming death delivered by what's likely a Demon Lord.

All you have left as your sword, then your armor, and finally you break before heavy, flaming death.

Spite is what keeps you on your feet for those last few seconds. Spite is what numbs the pain of your chest being nearly cut in half. Spite is what allows you to hold onto your destroyed sword.

Then even spite leaves you.

It's a nice feeling, to just not have to worry about things for a while.

That ends after some time, as a feeling of warmth flows over you. Opening your eyes, you find yourself staring up at a wide open blue sky.

Pushing up to a sitting position, you look curiously around a green section of grassland.

"Morgan!" At the mention of your name, you look over your shoulder to see a young woman walking towards you, "C'mon, Morgan, you can't just lie around sleeping all day long. You almost gave Mom and Dad a heart attack when you wandered off".

"I told you all I was going to take a nap, Alyssa," You hear yourself respond without any conscious ability on your part, firmly cementing this as a memory of yourself even if its not coming to you right now. Your older sister, Alyssa, is well into adulthood though its clear she hasn't been with child yet, meaning she's about 20? 21? It's a bit of a moot point now, but it let you know that you're just barely 15 at this point in time.

"Well too bad Morgan!" Your sister gives you a wide smile, "You know Kyle's been waiting months for this trip; are you really going to ruin your brother's birthday by not being there?"

You can feel your teenage self go to object, but Alyssa completely ignores your protests and starts dragging you off towards the massive City in the background.

The demon just nods at you, "Correct. As for your concerns, they are not needed. Combustion of internal organs is a common injury for opponents of the High Lord. I am... well practiced in this treatment".

"Right, the big fucker with the burning sword; I think I'm in the mood to punch the bastard," With a sigh, you lay back down against the table you're tied to.

"Do you now?" That voice sends you on edge, and you turn your head around to watch the 'High Lord' stroll into the room.

"... As stated, below average Intelligence," You glare at the medical monstrosity, before turning back towards the demon that should have killed you.

The demon just smiles down at you with its decaying face, "No, I did not have Abathur here revive you so I could gloat. I had you revived because I was impressed by your combat prowess".

"Great," You can't help but roll your eyes a bit, "I have a demon for a fan. And 'impressed'? I distinctly remember you kicking the shit out of me back there".

"That is a minor detail compared to your potential," It looks you over, as if it is seeing something you can't, "Potential, and the drive to seize it".

You don't say anything, figuring that it's not done talking yet.

"Despite what some of our kind may believe, Demons are not immortal beings. One day, we shall return to the great Flame of Chaos that birthed us. And I, I am Old. My end swiftly comes, and as such I must have a Successor. Now, I have offspring, but they fail to understand the purpose of my position," It starts walking around the room, 'Abathur' moving out of the way as it does, "To be the Lord General of Combat is to be peerless in combat, to be able to fight any human, any Angel, and any Demon and win. My offspring do not understand this; they think I do not know of their conspiracies upon my prestige. They believe they can plan among themselves of how to divide up my position after my passing".

"It's always amusing to learn what humans think of us, but that's of no matter in this situation," It looks... genuinely amused? It's a strange expression to see from a rotting face, that's for certain, "And I already have a solution to my problem; it's rather simple truly".

You do your best to motion for it to get on with it, what with you still being restrained and all.

"Well, the problem is that my offspring aren't taking my succession seriously. The solution, then, should be to just light a coal under their asses," It stops pacing, and looks distinctly smug despite its horrifying visage, "You, human, will be named my Successor".

You take this extremely distressing notion in the most calm and rational way you can.

"FUCK THAT!" Straining against your restraints once more, you switch between glaring at the medical monstrosity and the idiot Lord General, "Are you stupid? You want a human to succeed a demon?"

"I do," The fact that this demon is able to say that with a straight face is starting to get on your nerves.

"You know I'm going to kill your offspring, right?" Calming down a bit, you don't cease your glare, "I'm a demon killer, I'm not going to go easy on your spawn because you asked me to".

"You speak like that's not the exact reason why I'm doing this," The Lord General starts walking around again, "Like I said before, someone in my position needs to be able to defeat and destroy any opponent. If they cannot defeat you then why should they take up my position?"

"...Doesn't matter to me; I ain't doing it," Relaxing a bit, you just stare up at the ceiling, "I've lost so many friends to you demonic fucks; no bloody way am I going to join up with them".

The Lord doesn't look surprised, continuing to look at you with an even expression, "Tell me, human, whose word do you think will the demons listen to? Yours, or mine? Like I stated, I will be naming you my Successor; whether or not you take the position is your decision. But that does not matter; once I name you as such my offspring will not let such an insult lie; they will come after you regardless of your intentions".

"So you're fucking me regardless of what I do..." Sighing, you turn back up to look at the ceiling.

"Not quite..." The Lord General walks over and begins to undo your restraints, "I'm more than willing to aid you; mostly replacing the weapon and armor you lost in our fight".

You pull yourself into a sitting position, rubbing your sore wrists, "What's the catch?"

This makes the demon smile, "Well, you won't lose your soul, I can promise you that, but I can knight you as a Dreadknight".

>>2220344

Dreadknights are essentially humans who have made a deal with a demon. The terms of the deal are entirely up to the human and the demon.

Paladins are pretty standard fantasy paladins, only they're set in a Dark Fantasy world where Demons are a constant threat. They mostly divided up into four main Orders, one of which Tihone was apart of before he betrayed them.

Hell Knights are undead husks of humans in service of a demon. They have a minimal amount of intelligence, enough to understand orders and respond to questions, but other than that they are effectively gone.

>>2220380

The catch is that several high ranking demons are going to hunt you down and attempt to kill you. It doesn't sound like a big catch, but considering all Dygteus is giving you in return is a healed body, a set of armor, and a spare weapon it fits.

>>2220394
>>2220540

Thanks you two.

On the topic of hell magics, Morgan only has an affinity for Illusion magics so keep that in mind.

I'm still trying to work out how Gwyn thinks painting a target on Morgan's head for his offspring to seek out and kill will make him amenable to taking up the role as his successor, instead of make him far more pissed off at demons in general.

I mean, at this point, if Morgan were to even consider accepting the position, it would probably only be with the intention of using the clout that comes with it to force the demons to lose the war.
>>
>>2220737
i live for half an hour
>>
>>2220752

Morgan has a rudimentary knowledge of other weapons, its just that he specializes in greatswords.

>>2220755

Morgan's a bit too old to start Paladin training (he's in his mid-20's). As for hiding his Dreadknight status, Morgan himself is not Evil alignment so Paladins/Clerics won't be able to just Divine Sense him. However, armor that originates from Hell is going to attract some attention..

>>2220763

Well, perhaps you'll eventually work towards that kind of weapon.

>>2220777

It's a bit hard to explain IC, but OoC Dygteus is irritated that his children aren't improving themselves to the point where one of them would be worth of succeeding him as they're instead just waiting for him to 'die'.

His idea with naming Morgan as his successor is that the offspring that want to take up the position are going to actually have to get off their asses and work for it rather than just waiting for him to die.

As for Morgan actually accepting the position, remember that Dygteus said that it doesn't matter if he wants to or not; the simple fact that he's naming him successor is enough. Whether or not Morgan ultimately takes up the position if he ends up killing off all of Dygteus' offspring is a decision you'll be making if we get to that point.

do the demons die of old age?
it seems like they at least get weaker.

I'd assume that natural order would be that the young ones as they grow stronger cull themselves as unwanted competition and eventually overpower the "daddy", either because his powers left him, or because he finds himself in a disadvantageous position, or just because he lets his guard down.

What perks are associated with the status of a "successor" anyway? Aside from having to fight off a bunch of fiendish relatives.
>>
>>2220843
The ability to intentionally bungle military decisions, and get thousands of demons killed to the benefit of humanity.
>>
>>2220843

Demons eventually wither away/go insane due to their chaotic, and thus inherently unstable, nature.

As for the perks of being a successor, well, the position in question is to be a High Lord of Hell. For reference, Beelzebub and Belial are also of this rank. So the perks are loads of subordinates, prestige, and such.

>>2220340

"You want me to be one of your Dreadknights?" Standing to your feet for what feels like the first time in days, you give the demon that just suggested that incredibly stupid idea a hard look, "You really an absolute idiot, you know that right?"

"Not 'one of', my only Dreadknight," The demon motions for you to follow him and at a shove from Abathur, you reluctantly do so.

"I still don't see why I should accept this," Exiting out of the room, you find yourself within the walls of some stone fortress; probably the same one you saw back when you were outside, "Making a deal with a Demon is pretty much the stupidest idea I can think of".

The Lord General just shrugs - shrugs! - at you, "Whether you become a Dreadknight or not is up to you. Of course, once I announce you as my successor you will want to have every advantage you can get".

With that, the two of you enter into what is clearly some kind of armory. Weapons of every size and shape adorn the walls, though what's in the center of the room is a set of armor that has clearly been set aside for you.

"This armor conforms to its owner and, upon slaying a Baron or higher rank Demon will absorb a portion of their power. With it, I believe you will pose a great enough challenge to my offspring. Become my Dreadknight and it shall be yours".

It's with a pure sense of pragmatism that you open your mouth, "Throw in a sword, and I'll accept".

"That isn't an issue," The demon just motions towards the armory around you, "Take whichever one you like".

Looking around, you immediately discount the ones that look like they have any kind of magic in them; you're not stupid enough to take a weapon that'll just scream you're working with a demon.

After looking around, you end up picking up a perfectly normal...

What does Morgan even intend to do from here?

As I see it, he could possibly do as Dygteus wants and take the chance to kill as many high-ranking demons as he can, so as to spare his comrades from doing so. Or, likely doubting the High Lord's honestly and motivations, he could just use whatever aid Dygteus is offering as a means to survive long enough to find a way back out of Hell (likely by finding a Hellgate and sneaking invisibly out of it).
>>

We could also just try to fuck off and hide but demons would probably find us. >>2220920

Setting aside the claymore you'll be using from now on, you head over for the armor and start putting it on.

The armor definitely doesn't fit you right, and you're about to say something when the sound of metal screeching fills your ears.

Looking down, you watch with morbid fascination as the armor adjusts and cracks, forming into what looks to be a slightly more sinister version of your original armor. You can't tell what makes it look sinister, as its almost an exact copy, but perhaps that's just because you know what it really is.

Grabbing your next greatsword, you secure it to your side and turn to where the Lord General is looking you over, "So, now what?"

"Now you're getting out of Hell," You raise an eyebrow at the demon's words, though since you're now wearing a helmet again it can't see you do so, "I'm going to make the announcement shortly, and as such you're not going to want to be around when I do so".

That makes sense, and you're about to ask how it plans on doing that when it reaches out and taps your chest.

There's a faintly familiar POP noise and with that you vanish out of reality.

2. we spend some time digging under the city, and open in down under the city, maybe even in a mountain and use that as a constant source of troops rather than a quick rallying attack

quick question. Do we can they power that we get from slaying them or does the armor get it and buffs us?

As >>2221012 said, but also consider the fact that transporting a single person is a very different thing from keeping a Gate open and bringing an army through. Also, if a High Lord enters the material plane, you can bet the Orders are going to make an attempt to kill them while they're out of their territory.

>>2221009

Correct.

>>2221109
>>2221105

Who knows what kinds of things you'll run into?

>>2221124

Stop trying to commit war crimes.

>>2221150

The armor is what grows in power; after certain thresh holds it'll gain new functions.

No, we are a hell knight. LETS DO WAR CRIMES
>>
>>2221205
Incorrect.
We are a dreadknight, not a hellknight.
>>
>>2220991

Glancing around, you find that you're somewhere in the East, as you look down upon a massive plain. There are a few forests to the side of it, but other than that its mostly an open area.

From what you can see, you're currently alone. Giving yourself a once over, you're mostly certain that you don't scream 'Dreadknight' from just your appearance despite the fact that its now your current occupation.

That's good, as you're not really sure that you've entirely processed what's happened in the last day or so.

Unfortunately, you're still entirely devoid of coin, food, or water; you're going to need to fix that if you want to survive long enough for the demons on your heels to get a shot at you.

With that, you start walking further towards the great prairies of the East.

You are Morgan Anderle, Dreadknight.

And you have a feeling you'll be killing many a demon in the coming days.

> And that's it for the first thread folks. Hope you all enjoyed this, as its been a nice change of pace. I'm going to be working more on my main quest, Artificer Quest, before coming back to this but we will be continuing Morgan's story.

why do you like war crimes asides from being an edgy piece of shit?
>>
>>2221219
War crimes should only be committed against nonhumans.
Frankly, I think we should work our way up to creating a Prime Portal in the middle of a Demon city, so that the holy armies of the living can invade and slaughter everyone.
>>
>>2221220
i was suggesting doing what demons do, as in what we are now successor for and apparently thats a war crime. wondering why he doesnt like the idea of doing what all the other demons are doing.

but point taken

>>2221222
that can work
>>
>>2221223
We can just kill all his successors and get out we don't actually need to succeed him
>>
>>2221223
I don't see any point where Morgan would exhibit any interest in committing atrocities, nor do I see any compulsion placed on him on the demon lord so far.

Although it seems more than a bit whimsical on the demon lord's part to use Morgan in such manner.

Of course there is option of taking it the "power corrupts" path where Morgan would become so enamored in the hellish power that he'd abandon his previous morals in favour of embracing the opportunity presented to him.
Although that's hardly a foregone conclusion.

In any event, I imagine Morgan's priority number one will be survival of his own - and perhaps also that of people in his immediate vicinity, since being a target for ambitious demons will inevitably bring with it a lot of collateral damage.
>>
>>2221282
Maybe wearing the armor will corrupt our soul. Demon boi snuck in a few curses.
>>
>>2221329
I mean he might have but as of right now going full genocide seems kind of sudden and weird.
>>
>>2221281
considering the fact that we'd be able to kill pretty much anything in creation if we took out all of Lord General's children, it'd be a waste not to use that power for something
>>
>>2221281
>The Lord looks distinctly smug despite its horrifying visage

You think that's an option. granted we don't have to be good at it or put any effort into the job. However if we kill his offspring and him the title and position would be ours regardless.
>>
Now that we kind of have demon like armor if we end up going to a church or end up fighting a paladin are we going to burst into flames or be at a disadvantage

Just as a heads up folks, I'll be away for this weekend and, since my laptop is still out of commission, I won't be able to update until either late Monday or Tuesday (EST).

I'll be back then, and we'll continue things either on here or in a new thread.

>I'm going to be working more on my main quest, Artificer Quest, before coming back to this but we will be continuing Morgan's story.

Long story short I want to finish the current arc of my main quest before I jump back into this. As stated, I will let you all know when it does, either through Twitter, Discord, or QTG.

>>2221281

Correct, you can do just that. >>2222722 brings up a valid concern, however. Remember that part of the issue is that it is currently its your word versus Dygteus'. Simply put, some demons won't give a shit what your disposition towards the position is.

For future reference, what's people's disposition towards optional side bosses? They be out of the way, somewhat obvious here, and that'll take time for travel, which may or may not be an issue depending on the situation at the time. Additionally, some of them may be 'allies' so you might want to think twice about killing them.

Either way, they'll all be towards getting sweet, sweet upgrades for your armor but don't worry there won't be a 100% completion penultimate armor that you'll need to jump through six hoops, max out your social links, and run through the game again on NG+ for a single boss fight to get. TL;DR don't worry about not getting every single possible upgrade.
>>
>>2234984
I'm okay with side bosses and loot/upgrades would we have to roll for the Rarity of the loot and upgrades?
>>
>>2234984
I'm okay with that as long as you don't level scale the mandatory bosses because we got swole by beating side bosses.
>>
>>2235237

Upgrades aren't going to be rolled for. Essentially what will happen is that you'll kill the boss, the armor will 'process' their essence, then after a long rest you'll have 2-3 options for what you actually get.

>>2235255

The mandatory bosses won't scale because of the upgrades you receive, unless of course you get into a fight with them, show off a few cards from your hand, and don't kill them. In that case, the demon will essentially become a Nemesis if you've read AQ. As such, the mandatory bosses will 'scale' and develop, but it will not be because you got upgrades per say.
>>
I wonder how Claire took Morgan's disappearance...I assume either crippling depression or following through on some of our earlier implications. possibly both.
>>
>>2234984
Love me some side bosses, and I love me some Enemies that are actually allies. If anyone here followed Hellborn Quest I'm talking Ranthix tier allies.

>>2236481
I bet she cried. Like a girl. We should laugh at her and pull on her braid. That totally doesn't mean we like her. Shut up.
>>
>>2236973
You mean we won't hug her in relief at finally seeing someone who doesn't want our head on three separate pikes and then immediately stop, cough and ask her to pretend that never happened?
>>
>>2236982
No thats totally what happens when we see Will. Since hes probably scouting, but we immediately rag on him on how he totally sucks at scouting without us watching his back. Plus we're just bros, theres nothing wrong with holding your sword bros in arms close after a long campaign.
>>
>>2237011
So what you're saying is we'll hug Claire because we really want to hug Claire.

Will gets a hug for being the first human being we see?
