This here's a quest about a young Norseman in a fake history based world with some low fantasy/mythic elements.

I don't want to mislead anyone with OP pic so right away I'll say there's some stuff to be done in Denmark before MC actually goes viking.

We are vikings, not VIKINGS!!! Meaning horned helmets are purely ceremonial, axes don't have blades the length of your forearm, no dragon shouts, etc.

It's late to start a thread but I mostly just want to get some character creation done tonight/overnight. So with further ado, Viking Quest.

Your father always considered himself an unlucky man. All his life was a struggle to rise from the circumstances of his birth, but in the end all he had to show for a lifetime of hard work was a small farmstead with poor fields. It was enough to provide for you and Mother, but not enough to satisfy his ambition.

So when a messenger from Ribe called for strong, brave men to assemble with arms and supplies for a voyage to new lands across the Western Sea, your father kissed you and Mother goodbye, promising to return with the riches to improve your lot. Instead, he returned with a brand new sword and set of armor, a rowdy bunch of companions, and a different attitude. He was barely interested in the affairs of running the farm, spent more time drinking with his new friends, and jumped at the first chance to set off across the sea again.

Once more he promised to return, only this time he never did. The longship that ferried his expeditions returned with just five of the 30 men who had sailed. Three died of their wounds shortly after, one wandered from the village and was never seen again, and the last refuses to this day to speak of the horrors they endured in a savage place called Irland. Your father rests on Odin's shoulders, in the bellies of ravens, and all that you have left of him is his name and his ambition.

Your farmstead is poor, your mother grows old, and the gods barely know your name. But that will all change soon, for you're now a man, and your saga has begun.

First, roll base stats with a 3d33 for each of: Str, Agi, Int, Cha. These represent inherent ability - that which some believe is passed from father to son.

Declare which stat you're rolling for with your dice+3d33. I'll take the first roll for each stat.

Intelligence 48
Charisma 53

So far pretty good strength and perception, average everything else.

In your youth, you stood out for...

>Your height. You grew fast and before long were looking down on most adults. (+8 Str, +10 if Muscle is picked next)
>Wandering the village, talking with the elders and learning from them. (+8 Int and one trade skill proficiency)
>Being the leader whenever the boys played, and having a way with words. (+8 Cha and some friends)
>Spending days and even nights exploring in the forests and wilds. (+8 Per and a smart dog companion)
>Your reflexes and dexterity, evident in your skill with weapons. (+8 Agi and start at fighting skill 1)

Can't think of any RPG where having a bunch of average stats is better than having one or two good ones.

Spending days and night's exploring.

Yeah change my vote to:

A correction, Agility in previous vote gives +1 fighting skill level, as opposed to starting at fighting skill 1. As a man of Norse culture you get a base fighting skill of 1.

I'll post the next part in about half an hour, last call for any votes on this one.

Alright, you gain +8 Per and here's your doggo. He acts like a dumbass most of the time, but is actually quite intelligent, trainable, and capable of flushing out or even tackling prey. Name him if you wish to.

>Name dog.
>Eh, he's just a dog.

Later in life, you began to learn the skills a man needs, and took on more and more responsibilities at the farm. But you still had free time for...

>Bodybuilding. Swimming, climbing, rowing, lifting and throwing heavy rocks, whatever helped build strong and useful muscles. (+8 Str, +10 if height was picked earlier)
>Learning a few valuable trades, and some other useful things besides. (+8 Int and a trade skill proficiency, and either math or a language)
>Developing a silver tongue, and getting to know some lovely girls from the village. (+8 Cha and a few girls want your dick)
>Hunting and exploring as always, walking the shadows and going ever deeper into the wild. (+8 Per and a wild acquaintance)
>Sparring and training, learning the oldest tricks in the book and developing some of your own. (+8 Agi and +1 fighting skill level)

Alright. Pick a trade skill to have proficiency in. There are a lot of ways that talented Norsemen make a living, such as tanning, carpentry, smithing, boat building, baking, jewel crafting, trading, etc. You can pick one of these or think of something else that might be useful to you.

And decide whether you want to have a good grasp of math and problem solving, or a language (Saxon, Frankish, Baltic, Arabic or something else).

You can still name your dog but he will otherwise just be referred to as your dog.

Your farmstead is poor, but when news of your father's death arrived in the village the thegn took pity on you and your mother. At Father's meager funeral "feast" he presented you with...

>A gift of silver. (400 hacksilver) It's not as valuable as the other choices but silver has value to everyone and is basically gonna be the basic currency of this quest.
>A male thrall, to do manual labor and tedious tasks like fetching water.
>A female thrall, to help Mother in and around the house.
>A horse, a good animal for riding, labor and eating.
>>
Rolled 2 (1d2)

>>2212510
>1 trading
>2 carpentry

Probally not the smartest choice but...
>Baltic language

>Dog name Jesper

>a female thrall
>>
>>2212510
>Trading
>Math

>A horse, a good animal for riding, labor and eating.
>>
>>2212510
I'd go for...
>Carpentry
>Speak Frankish or be able to do math, not really sure which
>I have no idea for a dog name, so just "the dog", or any name any anon finds
>A male thrall would be useful
>>
>>2212510
Learn Frankish
Name dog Thorir
Make thrall
>>
>>2212709

>>
>Denmark

Dropped. Pokker danskejævler.

Be back in half an hour to continue, the next few votes are pretty simple and I think the quest might start tonight.

>>2212953
You can always spend time learning more later, but for now you just get to pick one.

>>2212884
What a shame. Have fun in norwegian viking quest I guess.
>>
Learning a few valuable skills and trades
Boat building
Saxon
Female thrall
Dog is Dog
>>
>>2212602
I’ll back this
>>
We got a name?
>>
So far it looks like

Baltic 1
Frankish 2
Saxon 1
Math 2

Dog is Thorir, Jesper, or just a dog

Carpentry 2
Trading 2
Boat building 1

Male Thrall 2
Female Thrall 2

So we need tiebreakers for just about everything.

>>2213082
Names are part of the next vote, so you can go ahead and start thinking of suitably Norse sounding names.
>>
>>2213198
I switch to carpentry
Math
Frankish
I dont really care for the dogs name
>>
>>2213422
Alright sounds good. posting from mobile on the r0ad now and I'll be in later. next vote is simple though, give me a Norse sounding name for you and your father (your last name), now that we have an idea of who you are.
>>
>>2213644
Erik Orinsonn
>>
>>2213644
Alaric Fellrick
>>
>>2213648
>>2213836
Alright, vote for a name and we'll lock that in. We can still propose names too.

In the meantime, there's one more question, and an exercise in viking ambition before we begin the quest.

Do you believe in the gods?

>Of course. The gods have spoken to me.
>Of course. They are real and often walk and live among us, whether we know it or not.
>Well, everyone says they're real so they must be, right?
>Don't be silly, they're just motifs we use to make sense of human nature, and of the unexplainable.
>Hah! The gods! I pity the fool who believes in such childish notions.
>Write-in.

What are your ambitions? As big or small, short or long term as you like, go ahead and throw out any ambitions you have going into manhood. These can change as time passes, become unattainable, or be fulfilled. I'll put some choices down because you don't really have a frame of reference but this is mostly up to you guys. Everything you guys can agree on as an ambition will be added to a section of the pastebin (which you won't see for awhile so don't worry about it yet).

Examples (you can pick these too):
>I want to acquire the tools, animals and thralls we need to make this farm prosper.
>I want to raid.
>I want to avenge my father's death.
>I want to marry and have sons.
>I want to have sex with a girl.
>I want to own a boat and lead a crew of my own to foreign shores.
>I want to master the sword.
>I want to know my fate.
>I want to become king of Denmark.
>>
>>2214138

>>2214138
On a boat and lead a crew of my own to foreign lands
>>
>>2214138
>Of course. They are real and often walk and live among us, whether we know it or not.

>I want to become king of Denmark.
>>
>>2214147
>>2214163
You guys can list more than one ambition each. The idea is to throw out anything you want from this life, anything at all. You're a young Norseman, the world is your oyster!
>>
>>2214215
Ok how about this we want a fleet of 30 ships and treasure rooms filled to the ceiling with gold and jewels feasts everyday and a dozen strongholds
>>
>>2214138
I can't really think of a name so you can either pick one yourself or make a completed one its not that biv of a deal
>>
>>2214138
>>Of course. They are real and often walk and live among us, whether we know it or not.

>I want to own a boat and lead a crew of my own to foreign shores.

Alright fuck it, I'll just mash the names and we've got plenty to go on here.

It's two weeks after the funeral feast, and winter has set in. You are Alrik Orinsson, son of Orin the Unlucky and Audrun Eriksdottir. Those who know you would say you're an ok farmer but a better hunter and woodworker, and might call you Alrik the...

>Eagle Eye
>Builder
>Hunter
>Toymaker
>Write in (Your initial nickname, this can change over your lifetime)

You're of average height for a man, with sharp eyes, unremarkable looks, and strong shoulders and back from drawing your personally made masterwork bow.

>Longbow (high draw weight, high penetration, aimed shots, long distance, checks Str and Per)
>Shortbow (lower draw weight, low penetration, quick shots, move and shoot, checks Agi and Per)
>Write in

You and Audrun own the farm now, and you're big and strong enough this year that your mother says to you, "It's time you went viking, boy. All men must voyage, and discover what fate has in store for them. Plus, this farm is dirt poor and needs more workers, animals, tools, wagons, and treasure never hurt either. You'd better come back with something we can use. And get married will you? This house needs more women around to get the real work done."

"Mother, what about the farm? You got this?"

"I got this. Take this with you," she says, passing you your father's old fighting axe, "and go."

You take the axe and step outside to breathe in the crisp winter morning, closing your eyes to imagine all that you might accomplish; all that you will achieve. Then you go back inside, because you forgot all your gear and there's no actual rush to leave.

"Hey, you're back," your mom says. "With a chest full of treasure and a woman on your lap?"

"No Mom. What can I do to prepare for my voyage?" Audrun starts remarking on this or that as she weaves, giving you a laundry list of things you could do to be better prepared. She also gives you a pouch holding 50 hacksilver. Your weapons and armor are on a table and your dog yawns at you, wagging his tail.

You consider your options...

>I should make a sacrifice to the gods before I leave.
>I should someone willing to join me on this voyage and watch my back in battle.
>I'll should think about what goods I can trade in foreign markets.
>I should try to improve my weapons and armor before I go into battle.
>I need to improve my fighting skills. I need to find someone who can teach me.
>Demand mother's favorite plate. It's huge, useless, and worth at least 30 hacksilver.
>Take this harvest's surplus to trade in the village.
>I've got all I need already. It's time to go to Ribe and find a crew to join.
>>
>>2216800
Alright, you're Alrik the Hunter, and here's you and your inventory. You've basically got a head and body armor slot, and can carry 4 "hands" worth of weapons on you, up to 6 if you don't mind an encumbrance penalty to Agi related stuff. All of this stuff will go into a pastebin and if you want to know more about your stuff you can ask for more details.

Wherever you end up sailing to, you'll either be fighting or trading with the natives. You should prepare some trade goods to fill your chest before you take off, but what will you trade?

>I'll go on a hunt and prepare some furs and pelts.

Elk.
>>
>>2217640
You move up to higher ground and find the tracks you're looking for in little time. Before long you find the Elk; it has no notion of your presence. Your dog watches with the quiet of a predator.

You loose an arrow and the elk's neck is torn open. The wounded creature bolts but doesn't get far and leaves a blood trail. You put it out of its misery, and manage to drag it home before sunset. The rest of the day is spent skinning the beast so the fur will be ready. Mother, Waldeko and the dog are happy to have more meat on the table, and your mom says she could butcher any animals you bring in for meat you can trade at the village.

You wake up the next day.

>Continue hunting for more pelts. (pick animal, 1d100 * however many days you want to spend)

You have only one elk hide, and as soon as it's dry your mother helps you turn it into a bitchin' new cape that hangs halfway down your back. With some more hides you could probably try your hand at making some basic armor. Or you could take your stuff to a tanner to have some leather made. You look at the bare wooden boards of your shield and realize a hide or leather cover would serve you well.

>+Elk hide cape
>-1 pelt

Another day has passed. (Winter will last 90 days. You have until Spring to prepare for a season of raiding unless you decide to leave early.)

>Continue hunting for more pelts. (pick animal, 1d100 * however many days you want to spend)

>hunt 2 days for boars and 2 days wolfs
After that we have good supply of meat to sell at village and we can start finding battle buddies to take with us.
>>
>>2218043
The next four days go by on the hunt. On the first day you manage to wound and track down a boar with the help of your dog, but fail to make a kill the second day. On the third, a light snow is falling. You're looking for wolves when your dog begins to bark in alarm. It seems the wolves have found you; two of them. They flit in and out of sight through the trees around you while circling and snarling. One howls and you know it's on.

You ready your (you have two hands and some weapons need both or benefit from a double grip)...

>Bare hands
>Look around for rocks
>Just tell me what you're doing with your hands before the wolves attack senpai (write in)

You point and sic your dog on one of the wolves circling you, exploding into action yourself with spear in hand. You hear your dog and the wolf behind you yipping and barking at one another as the wolf in front locks eyes with you, dips low to the earth, and bares its teeth.

A wolf is attacking you. At fighting skill 1, neither of you has an advantage. Roll 1d100 and tell me what you want to do.

>Spearwall. (like a melee overwatch with a reach advantage. Hope that makes sense)
>Hurl your spear at the wolf. (Per and Str)
>Swat the wolf aside as it attacks. (Parry)(Agi)

You run in to save Thorir, pulling your axe from its belt loop as you close the gap. You come to a stop just before the struggling animals and take a golf swing at the wolf's back. Your father's old axe bites deep and the wolf gives a piteous whimper as it falls off of your dog.

Thorir clamps his jaw onto the wolf's throat and shakes the dying beast like a rag doll. You can see missing patches of fur and some bloody scratches, but the dog seems alright.

You recover your spear and use it to carry two wolves home. The next day you find nothing, but the pelts are ready. Mom continues to set aside extra meat for trade.

There are 84 more days of winter.

As a man of Norse culture, you've learned about fighting from your father and occasionally from playing with boys from the clan or the village. But in a raid on foreign people you will live and die by your skill, so you consider how you can improve your skills further. You'd have to seek out the tutelage of someone with plenty of experience or formal training (you need to find a level 2 or higher fighter).

You decide it's time to make the trip down to the village, and Waldeko helps load your old cart with meat and the harvest's surplus. Mother reminds you that the farm could use some salt. You have the boar and wolf hides with you as well, in case you find something to do with them. You and Thorir sit in the cart as the farm's single surviving ox makes its way down the long trail to the village of Fiska.

You head to the village marketplace, where people peddle the fruits of their labor and silver changes hands. Some people are working from their homes, while others have set up stalls or tents. You go about trying to find a good price for the surplus harvest and the extra meat before checking out some vendors' goods.

You ask around the market for the best prices for your extra goods, and in the meantime hear random tidbits of gossip or advertisement.

"Yep, he's looking for a new huscarl, not sure what for."
"Had your future read yet? Come see Olga the rune caster! Satisfaction guaranteed!"
"...aye, lost a couple hogs to it already. Not sure what we can do to be honest, but the thegn knows."
"Javelins, get your javelins here, they're the javviest!"
"Don't listen to that fool, trust your life to a throwing axe!"
"...another trip to the witch's glade soon, need something for my monthly pain."
"You know those traders in Haithabu? They bring curved swords. Curved. Swords!"

When it's all said and done you have 230 hacksilver in your pouch, and you still have your 3 hides.

You also ask for prices on salt and healing salves.

You catch the man who was talking about the rumor and ask, "Hey, what's that you said about huscarls?"

"Eh? Oh, the thegn. He's holding a contest to take a great fighter into his service. Jarl Sigurd in Ribe has decreed that all thanages in his jarldom shall have at least a warship and crew ready to sail by spring." The portly man's voice drops low to a whisper. "They say he wants to make himself rich in the western kingdoms, and make himself king of all Denmark. But who really knows what's going on inside a jarl's head, eh?"

You bid him fare well and take your leave of him, considering what he said. Becoming a huscarl would bring prestige to you and your family, not to mention the thegn would look after your needs for the duration of your oath.

You're still milling about in the village.

You load a barrel of the expensive salt into the wagon. This will allow your mother to preserve food for journeys overseas, and should be present at the table of any good feast.

Then you head over to the thegn's hall, easily visible by its size in comparison to other village buildings. Warmth drifts from an open door as you approach the single guard. He wears a stylish padded gambeson and polished helmet, and his hand rests easily on his belted fighting axe while his shield leans against the wall behind his post. He takes a look at your own equipment and nods you in saying, "Thegn Asgrim is already out back with some of the others. Go on through and mind your manners now."

Inside the hall, the thegn's house servants are busying themselves with the tasks of the day, and you can't help but notice your local lord has some fine women on deck here. You also notice a bored looking bowman checking you out from the second floor.

Out back in the thegn's yard, a few of the villagers you're somewhat acquainted with are sitting about on the floor with their shields and weapons, talking amongst one another. These are some of the bigger or more fit young men of the village, who aren't already in someone's service. The thegn and his huscarls are seated at a table further away, speaking with a single man. It seems there will be a wait.

You pass the time waiting for an interview talking to some of the guys, and introduced yourself and learned a bit about... (pick 2)

>Kjeld, a tanner's son. A short and strong young man. He wears a cool and tough looking leather jerkin.
>Thorald, a farmer's son. A tall and strong young man. He brought his bow as well.
>Chadvar, a farmer's son. A tall and strong young man with a face chiseled by the gods. He brought a two-handed splitting axe with a large head.
>Ogmund, a fisherman's son. Easily the largest man in the village in terms of sheer size. Muscles like rocks bulge from beneath a thick layer of fat.
>Lars, a blacksmith's son. A strong young man of average height. He wears a shortsword instead of an axe, and a helmet.
>Roggvir, a daytaler's son. A short and lean young man who looks out of place here. Doesn't even have a shield.
>>

The big guy and a blacksmith's son. Might be good friends to have.
>>
>>2226935
You wait with the others, taking a seat in by Lars and Ogmund. As the others are called up one by one, you learn that Lars is here because he thinks being a huscarl will be a more comfortable living than working at a hot forge with his overbearing father.

"I mean his thralls and servants are doing all the work around the hall. What does a huscarl even do day to day? You're fed, outfitted, given mead to drink, and bash a few heads when the thegn wants to lay down the law," the apprentice blacksmith muses with a wistful look in his eye.

Ogmund reminds him, "They're also the first off the boat in a raid, the men standing first in the thegn's shield walls, and sworn to protect their lord with their life. It's a bit more serious than you think." Lars shrugs, waving it off.

Ogmund doesn't actually want to be a huscarl or even a warrior, but with muscles like his everyone just expects him to take to fighting like a fish to water.

"Father practically made me come here when he heard," the big man says, scratching his bald head. " Says my size is a gift from the gods, and maybe it is. So... here I am." It's strange indeed that such a gifted man should reject his purpose.

You're called up next. The thegn, Asgrim son of Grim, is a young man with a look and bearing befitting a lord. Seated on either side are his huscarls, Brynjolf Long-Legs and Kara the Blind, wearing their weapons and armor. The three were at your father's funeral feast, and the thegn greets you.

"Heill, Alrik, son of Orin. I'm pleased to see you here, but if I'm not mistaken, you're the only man left in your household, no? Who is managing your farm?"

"My mother is taking charge of the farm for the time being. The thrall you gave us has been helpful, lord."

"I'm glad to hear it. Well then, let's get to business."

"Why do you want to be one of my huscarls?"

>I wish only to better serve my lord.
>I hear the job perks are great.
>I need to spend more time training to fight.
>It is the will of the gods.
>This is only a small part of a greater plan.

>I'm an archer with no equal, lord.

"Your father would have been proud of you," Asgrim assures you.

>I'm an archer with no equal, lord. It is true that I do not have the same skills as your other huscarls, but this means I can perform tasks that they cannot."

The thegn grins. Brynjolf and Kara seem unimpressed. "I'm an archer as well," Asgrim remarks. "I look forward to seeing you shoot. But my huscarls must be good fighters too."

>No, I've never had reason to.

"Well you will in my service, Alrik, if I choose. With or without reason to."

After a few trivial background questions the thegn does a quick interview of Lars and Ogmund. You and the others are lined up with shields and axes to face the thegn and his huscarls at a distance.

"Alright, first one's easy. Brynjolf here is gonna run at each one of you," the thegn gestures toward Brynjolf, who stands behind his shield in a mail shirt and helmet. He lives up to his nickname, standing nearly a head taller than you with wide shoulders and a warrior's build. "Stop him."

Brynjolf charges with explosive force and easily bowls over Roggvir behind his borrowed shield, throwing him to the dirt. The same happens to Kjeld though he puts up brief resistance, and it isn't so funny anymore. Lars at least manages to go down into a defensive posture. Thorald manages to stay on his feet but gives a lot of ground doing so. Ogmund doesn't budge an inch, and Chadvar manages to stop the charge.

Brynjolf jogs back and gets ready to sprint at you.

Brynjolf crashes into you with his shield with all his size and speed, and you brace for his charge by digging in and leaning. Even so, you just barely manage to hold your ground. The huscarl grunts and goes back to his lord's side, and you notice he's breathing hard. The thegn continues.

"Alright, now I need to see what I'm working with. You all know what holmgang is, now you'll fight one. You choose how you'll fight, and choose who you fight: Brynjolf, Kara, or me." As he gestures to himself he flourishes his gleaming sword in a circle. "Going to first blood only, no further. You leave the circle of stones, you forfeit the duel."

Lars takes up his axe and shield and chooses to fight Brynjolf. The two circle each other behind their shields and Lars strikes first, but his push is brushed aside and the huscarl gives him a grazing cut across the back of the leg for his trouble. Roggvir and Thorald get the same treatment, and the thegn groans when Ogmund makes a poor show of pretending to fight and is cut by a disappointed Brynjolf. Chadvar challenges Kara with the splitting axe, and promises not to hurt her. Kara spits at his feet and defeats him in a flurry of spear swings. Kjeld challenges Brynjolf fights with great fury, tiring himself out until his shield weighs like a stone and the huscarl kicks him in the stomach.

You can use it one or two handed, it's a medium length shaft and basically looks kind of like this. It is the perfect length to use with a shield, being a fighting axe made for that purpose. Double gripping a weapon gives more control and power than having it in one hand.

You take your father's axe and your shield, and challenge Brynjolf to the holmgang. He looks tired from 7 consecutive charges and a bunch of fights in armor, but he isn't letting it show in his posture or stance. He advances a few paces from the end of the circle, then bangs his axe on his shield boss to let you know it's on. He does not advance further, and his arms lie resting at his sides.

You step in closer from the edge of the circle, with eyes only for Brynjolf. As you close he raises his own shield into a stance you've seen a few times now, and starts to circle to your left.
