>You are Princess Zelda, heir to the fallen throne of Hyrule

>Your father, corrupted by Power, died in a coup, your Kingdom shattered in a civil war 10 years ago, the Hero in Green giving his life to ensure you escaped the conflict

>An uneasy peace has returned to the land, but omens of a descent into greater chaos than before loom on the horizon

>You, Zelda Hyrule, have the potential to claim your birthright and restore the Kingdom to what it once was, bring back true peace to the lands. Your path ahead is not set in stone; you must chisel it in yourself. What kind of Legend will you create?

Slowly you walk with the girls and Horon into the Temple. It seems... quiet, but not to the level of the eerie silence you heard when you first entered. You notice the spot where the shattered replica of the Master Sword was, vacant and cleared, as if it were never there in the first place. You place your hands to your mouth and shour out, “Linkle! We have returned, with what you requested of us!”

Footsteps seem to rush down the temple, drawing closer and closer, almost an excited skip audible in their movement. The young woman, clad in green, finally reaches your group, leaping from the staircase and landing gracefully. She stands tall before all of you... well, as tall as she can. Only Horon and Aveli are shorter than her. “Glad to see you all again. Ah, wait, seems we’ve got an extra here as well.”

Horon’s jaw seemed like it would drop to the floor as Linkle approached him, offering to shake his hand. It took him a moment to register the gesture, but he gave an enthusiastic shake all the same. “L-Lord Horon. N-nice to meet you... L-Link..”

“Linkle.” she finishes for him.

The boy gulps slightly, looking to you. “Wow Termina, you weren’t kidding... she’s the real deal.”

Linkle seems confused by him addressing you by that name, but she catches on. “So... you managed to find it?”

“That we did.” you tell the Hero, handing over the Timeshift Stone ring.

Linkle takes it in her hand, first looking at it curiously, then frowning at it, holding it up to the light to get a better view of it. “...You sure this is all you could find?”

Your heart sinks slightly. “It is all we could recover. What is wrong with it?”

“It’s almost run out of energy. The Magic needed to keep this working... it should be glowing brilliantly within the Temple of Time. But it only faintly flickers.”

“What needs to be done to restore it, Linkle?” you ask her.

“Zelda...” she starts, glancing at you, but quickly focusing her attention back to the ring. “She, well... she would know what to do with it.”

Horon snaps his fingers. “Agh, the Princess is still in hiding though. We don’t know where she is.”

Sheik and Aveli give you an awkward look. Linkle shakes her head at him. “No, not yours, mine. My Queen was the one who helped set this up, she knows how the Timeshift Stones operate... well, far more than I do, at least.” She slips the ring onto her left ring finger and clenches her fist. The ring’s faint glow grows brighter, but only barely. “...If I can use this to return home, I could figure a way to fix it.”

Horon rubs his chin. “Makes sense... but you sure our Princess couldn’t do the same? I bet she’s learned all sorts of crazy good magic stuff. If we find her, do you think we could use her to fix that ring?”

Just... a slight bit of embarrassment there. You almost want to pout, but you know it’d do you no good, possibly risk him catching on. Still... if Linkle’s Zelda could learn it in her time, perhaps you could as well? Or maybe Horon could benefit from Linkle’s training before she leaves.

“M-maybe, but you don’t seem to know where your Zelda is currently, do you?” She replies hastily to Horon. Technically true. Linkle then stops clenching her fist, looking over the ring. “It’s strange how it’s depleted at all... Timeshift Stones are supposed to have lasted millenia.”

“Linkle, we did find find documents in Hyrule Castle. Unusual ones, perhaps research notes relating to some experiments upon the stone.” you comment.

“Well... they did.” Horon butts in. “I had other business to attend to.”

The Hero looks at you curiously. “Experimenting on Timeshift Stones...? That sounds... sketchy.”

“Sketchy how?” the boy in red asks, crossing his arms and squinting at her.

Linkle looks down. “If they got to the point where the Timeshift Stone was depleted of power... well, what exactly were they trying to achieve? Create more of the stones? Infuse objects with their power? Hmn...”

“Well, maybe they were planning on using such objects against Ganon.” Horon suggests. “Or any other dark force that showed up to threaten the land.”

The Hero smiles at him. “You’ve got a good head on those shoulders.”

The boy’s face lights up with glee at her praise, Sheik rolling her eyes at him as Aveli giggles. Though... “Ah, Linkle, before you go... might you be able to help Horon, just as you helped us? Give him some training, help him with the Temple’s sword.”

She finally notices Horon possesses the Sword of Din, with the Biggoron’s Sword on Aveli’s back. Horon turns to you and smiles, rubbing the back of his neck. “I-I almost forgot to ask her. Thanks, Termina.”

“Perhaps I can.” Linkle states, drawing the Master Sword. “Are you ready, Horon?”

The boy’s fairy companion finally leaves his hat, floating over to Linkle’s blade, an awed mumble escaping her lips, “...It’s the real deal.”

Horon too seems awestruck by seeing the Master Sword with his own eyes. Almost too awestruck, as Linkle waves her hand at him, trying to catch his attention. She moves closer, snapping her fingers. “Ah! Y-yes! Ready!”

Okay, moving on.

>>2198298
You place your hands on your hips. “Horon, you really do need to not be distracted by such things. I can understand the awe, but one cannot leave their guard down for so long.”

He looks over towards you and pouts. “What are you, my mother? I can handle this Term-”

Linkle moves towards him, making her movements clear, but Horon’s caught off-guard, stumbling and tripping over his own feet as he tries to bring up his sword. Linkle points the Master Sword down at him, Horon gulping. “She does have a point. Don’t let your guard down like that, or you could end up seriously injured... or worse.”

You rub the back of your neck. “Ah... do try to go easy on him, though.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRPheoucN_0

“No promises!” Linkle replies as she helps the boy up, starting to instruct Horon on how to hold his sword. You notice, as the young woman holds her blade, the Master Sword seems to glow slightly in the morning light... as does Horon’s blade, though not quite as much. You look to Sheik, then point at your own acquired Servant Sword. Sheik draws her sword, pointing it towards the light as Horon and Linkle start to practice. The Master Sword seems to glow ever so brighter.

You finally do the same, and you feel a strange... resonance with the four swords. Each of them shines and glows softly, and as you watch Linkle teach Horon, each movement... it’s almost like you yourself are feeling them in your sword. Aveli seems curious as to what the two of you are doing, but stays quiet. You feel a warmth on the back of your hand, spotting the Triforce of Courage on Linkle’s hand glow almost as much as her sword does.

>A. Linkle, these Servant Swords of the Goddesses... do they have any other effects on the Master Sword?

“Linkle, about the Servant Sword of the Goddesses.” you start to ask, catching the young woman’s attention. “Do they have any other effects around the Master Sword?”

She smiles, gripping the Master Sword tighter and preforming a spin with it, Horon following her movements... quite a bit better than you expected. In fact, you... feel a strange sensation in your arm as you watch her train the boy. Even Sheik seems to notice something. “You could say that.”

“...Servant Swords.” Horon repeats, thinking for a moment as Linkle shows him how to thrust with the blade. What’s odd is that while the swords are quite different in shape, weight, and purpose... every movement Linkle makes, Horon is able to follow quite well.

“When we designed this Temple to train the next Hero, we recalled the training the Hero of Time gave the Hero of Twilight. Each Hero will develop along their own path, but having a mentor can help give them an edge against any trials they face.” Linkle grabs the Master Sword with both hands, brings it over her head, and jumps up while stabbing downwards with it; Horon mirrors her movements almost expertly. “The Servant Swords are meant to help guide a Hero in learning from their predecessors.” She pulls the Master Sword from the stone floor, looking at her reflection with it. She... then frowns.

“Ah, so a true Hero will get the most from training with them?” Horon asks pridefully, Felicia bumping herself against his head. “Ow! Hey!”

“...That was the intent. Though I guess things have been... complicated, in this time.”

Horon hoists the Sword of Din over his shoulder, standing proudly. “Have no fear, Linkle! While my cousin valiantly gave his life to protect our precious Princess, I’ve dedicated myself to honoring his memory. If it’s a Hero you want, it’s a Hero I’ll be.”

She looks back at you, still frowning, before holding her left hand up and looking down at it. “...Maybe you will be, some day. Courage can come from surprising places. But even if you aren’t, even if they aren’t, I’ll help you all the same. I made a promise with Zelda and Onox that we would help change things for the better. I intend to follow through with that promise.”

“Horon, I do not think a Hero should be so boastful.” you comment critically towards him. “Even if you do have good intentions with them, perhaps it is better to be more reserved and careful.”

He shrugs. “Right, right.”

You sigh out at his response. He still has a ways to go. “In any case, it is a promise we have taken up as well, Linkle. Things will be different this time, for the better. You have given us much to help make that a reality.”

She blushes and smiles. “Your words are kind... Termina.”

You nod at her. “Would you mind telling us a little more about your own time, Linkle? It would be nice to hear how your journey started, perhaps give us a bit to learn from. Before you go back, that is.”

“Ah... w-well...” She rubs the back of her neck bashfully, Horon looking up at her with enthusiasm. “...I guess I could, after we finish training.”

It takes about an hour for Linkle to finish instructing Horon on the basics, though you and Sheik both feel like you’ve learned something from observing her movements. The more you see her in action, the more you realize just how skilled Linkle is; it is beyond mere natural talent, she truly knows how to handle a blade like an expert, years beyond what you were trained to do by Impa.

With the Hero satisfied in the boy’s progress, she has the four of you sit on the staircase. “Well... like I told you before, I was raised a farmgirl. Spent most of my early life raising cuccos with my Uncle near Kasuto. It... all really started with reports of strange beasts prowling the woods, attacking livestock, pets, even people. On a foggy morning, just as some of the town’s kids arrived to play nearby, I’d gone out to check on the cucco pens, when I saw what seemed to be an elk trapped in the fencing. It was panicked, struggling, trying to get in, trying to escape... something. I was able to calm the poor thing and get him free, but the beast after the poor elk finally found him.”

“What kind of beast? Like. some monster, animal?” Horon interrupts.

“Neither... and both. A gigantic, mangy wolf with a strange symbol atop its head. A pattern like the Triforce, but inverted; upside down, and the three triangles like three orbs spiraling in towards each other. What Onox and Zelda would later call a ‘Beast Mark,’ a signifier of the Beast of Power’s influence upon a creature. Uncle tried to drive it off, but the creature managed to grab one of the kids, dragging him off into the woods.” She looks down on her left hand again. “I... sort of acted without thinking. I went and grabbed my sword, crossbow, and wooden shield, and chased after the monster. It was far faster than I was, and I couldn’t get a clear shot at it, but to my surprise, the elk I helped earlier came running to me. It even let me ride it, the two of us chasing down the oversized wolf and finally taking it down. I’d chased off plenty of animals, even a few monsters before... but this was different. My first real challenge... my first step towards becoming what I am now. The elk pinned the wolf down with his horns as I fired bolt after bolt at the creature, finally finishing it by stabbing it in the head.”

“Woah! You were pretty brave even starting out, Linkle!” Horon interrupts again, Felicia grumbling at him and trying to shush him.

“...Even though I rescued that boy, though, another one had taken my Uncle. I... really started on a journey to rescue him, eventually saving him after meeting King Onox, and from him realizing just how big this all was. I was determined, though, to do something to stop it. The elk I rescued ended up one of my allies along my first journey... the first animal that helped me earn my title as Hero.”

“Title?” Sheik repeats curiously.

She chuckles apologetically. “I guess I never told you it, huh? Well, let me start from the top then. I am Linkle, the Hero of Beasts.”

Linkle bows to you all respectfully as she prepares to depart. “I wish I knew how to fix this thing on my own. I’d be able to help directly, without having to go through all these hoops...”

“If anything, we should be apologizing to you, Linkle.” you state. “At the very least, I wish I could help more...”

She giggles. “You’re starting to sound like someone I know.”

Sheik squints at her, but refuses to say anything, Horon instead butting in. “Well Linkle, fear not, with all of us working together, and with the training you gave me already, we’ll hold back the darkness creeping across the land and find the Princess in no time!”

The Hero looks over to you awkwardly, but keeps her composure. “I’m sure you’ll find her... and work well with her to save Hyrule.” She starts to walk off, but halts, turning back. “Ah, one more thing before I leave. Where are you all headed next?”

“Well, I believe the Lost Woods would be a good place to start. Do you know anything about them, Linkle?”

She stares at you like a frightened deer. You... swear you hear faint music coming from somewhere as she clears her throat. “I... have been there before. I’d be lying if I said I’m surprised they’re still standing, but... hooh. In my time, they were a notorious maze, a strange magic surrounding them that disoriented you. One wrong turn and you could be stuck in there for days... entirely unaware of how long time passed.” She scratches her chin. “I only made it out thanks to Skull Kid.”

“Skull... Kid?” Horon repeats, mildly confused, slightly worried.

Now that’s an ominous name. “I recall a friend of mine telling me that a child got lost in there a while back, but was rescued by some people that reside within the Lost Woods, the Kokiri, I believe. Was your Skull Kid one of these Kokiri?”

“If he... she... it was, never really told me. Then again, Skull Kid preferred taunting to answering direct questions...” Linkle grumbles, pouting. “You get lost in there for a day and suddenly you’re branded someone with no sense of direction...” She seems to place her hand on her compass as she makes that comment. “Ah, s-sorry! Um... I did meet the Great Deku Tree, who resides deep within the Lost Woods’ center. He’s a wise, ancient spirit, and I am sure he is still around even now. If you find him, I’m sure he’ll be able to answer some questions about what’s been happening. Maybe even who your foe may be.”

“You think this Skull Kid is still around too?” Horon asks her.

“Something tells me it is...” she sighs out. “Anyway, best of luck to you all. I will try to be back as soon as possible.”

“And to you, Linkle. I hope to see you again soon.” you tell her respectfully.

“You kick butt, Linkle! Take care!” Aveli shouts out cheerfully.

“I wish you and your Queen well, Hero.” Sheik adds.

“Won’t let you down! I’ll make you proud, Hero!” Horon finishes, adding a swift fist-pump into the air.

Okay, moving on...

>>2202749
“Well, shall we be off to the Lost Woods?” you ask everyone.

You all start off on the journey to the Lost Woods, heading around the swamp on Keaton, Aveli carrying Horon again. You look towards the boy as you travel. “Horon, tell me... how do you feel, now that you’ve met a Hero of the past?”

He actually takes a moment to think about his response, Aveli looking back at him as he ponders how to respond. “...Humbled might be a word for it. Wow, I have a long ways to go. But... I feel a bit more focused, too. I started this in memory of my cousin. Now I want to make her proud too. Heh, seems like I missed quite a display when you all first met her.”

You smile at him, nodding. “She saved my life more than once. I wish I could have done more to help her...”

“Ah, you did enough, Termina, more than I could on my own, yet. And I betcha the Princess will be jealous you got to meet the Hero, though.” Horon says with a laugh.

You force yourself not to sigh. “...I am sure the Princess will just be happy we could help save Hyrule from falling even further.”

“Good point! Let’s get to those Lost Woods! I bet that big tree might know something about her!”

Sheik and Aveli glance at you uncomfortably. Hooo boy. Really hope that the Great Deku Tree can be... discrete... in how he answers Horon’s questions. Finally, all of you reach the outskirts of the Lost Woods, a soft but ominous fog creeping out from it. You all slowly step in, taking care to stick together. As you enter, you happen upon a small grove, with three hollowed out tree stumps leading north, east, and west.

Hmm... Mask of Truth? Mask of Truth. You place the Mask on your face, looking around the area. In the area to your left, the westward opening, you hear a strange tune playing distantly. “...Do any of you hear that?” you ask aloud.

“Hear what?” Horon asks.

“Not hearing anything, T.” Aveli comments. “But seems like you’ve found a path.”

“Perhaps I have. Stay close, everyone...”

You start to lead them through the open tree stump, the fog seeming to grow thicker behind you as you walk forward. The sound is faint still, but stronger than before. Continuing to follow it, you head through similar paths. West again, then up north, then toward the east, until you come across a larger grove, with a split path through the trees ahead, one going north-west, the other going north-east, the sound coming equally from both directions.

Felicia appears out of Horon’s cap, moving ahead of you, looking around. “...There’re people out here.”

“The Kokiri?” you ask her.

“No no... no there’re people out here. If the Kokiri wanted themselves known, they’d make themselves known, these are more... normal people. One is towards that north-west path, another’s further along to the north-east.”

“Maybe one of them is Skull Kid.” Horon suggests.

“Doubtful.” the fairy comments. “If I had to guess... you’re hearing music, right, Termina?”

You nod. “At least, as long as I wear the Mask of Truth.”

“Well, Skull Kid might be guiding you with it, if it’s him.” she states.

“You sure, Termina?” Horon asks. “Could be a trick, or could get us lost.”

“I am hearing the same sound come from both directions. It should be correct no matter what path we take.” you tell the boy. “Let’s go.”

The rest sticking close with you, you move towards the path, the fog covering the area behind you like before. The grove is much bigger, a small stream traveling through it, most of the area still covered by trees, rays of light poking through the treetops.

You move towards a grassy area in the middle of the grove, the fog thickening... but you start to hear footsteps. Frantic ones... someone’s running towards you. Your hand moves down to your blade as you see a figure in the distance grow closer. There’s something behind them, too... larger creatures, what are...?

You cast Farore’s Wind, moving to the person running, appearing to them and telling them “Get down!”

To your suprise, and even moreso to hers, the person you encounter is Lynna. She follows your instructions quickly, getting down as the monsters move forward. You fire the Sword Beam forward, striking one of them and knocking it back. Although... the beam connecting with its target makes a strange sound, as if it were striking a puddle of liquid. You help Lynna up and quickly move back, tossing a bomb at the other pursuing Moblin as you return to the group.

The explosion rocks through the area, everyone standing ready to face the coming monsters. Though your attacks did hit true, your foes do not let up, charging forward... and the fog coming with them, rolling through the area like thick smoke. “I got this!” Aveli declares, charging at the first figure of a Moblin and swinging the Biggoron’s Sword at it. Sheik also moves to protect you, slashing at the other with her dagger.

To everyone’s shock, you all again hear the same splashing noise from when you attacked the first one with your Sword Beam, the creature Aveli engaged with cleaved in two... but the body of the monster seems to vanish into the fog as it washes over Aveli. Sheik too makes contact with her foe, but just as with Aveli, the fog tries to cover her, only the Sheikah’s agility getting her out of the way in time. Both creatures seem to reform behind the girls... and just now you notice that the features of the monsters are not solid. They’re almost as if... they’re a part of the fog itself.

Horon casts out Din’s Fire at the creatures, the explosion blowing away the coming fog, forcing you to cover your eyes just for a moment, a strange blue light mixing with the orange, yellow, and red of the explosion. As you pull your arm down, you look over to where the girls were... and find them missing. “Sh-Sheik? Aveli? Where are you two?!” you shout out frantically.

The Sheikah’s voice, to your surprise, comes out from behind you. “W-what just happened?” she asks aloud. You all look back and see her at the entrance to the area where you all are in.

Aveli’s voice shouts out from further, back in the previous area you were in. “T! Everyone! You all okay?!”

Lynna takes a moment to catch her breath, falling to her knees. “Th-thank... thank goodness I found you again...”

“Lynna, what are you doing here? It’s not safe here, we need to get you out, quickly.”

“I can’t, not yet.” she states, standing up again. “I need to see the Great Deku Tree, to help everyone.”

Ominous. “Why? What’s happened?”

She dusts herself off. “A strange fog rolled in not too long ago, covering the village. People have started disappearing, at an alarming rate... I traced it back here and I needed to do something to help everyone before it got worse, I thought if I could find the Great Deku Tree, he could tell me what to do...”

“Wait... were they like the creatures you were facing? Are they phantoms, like Zas?”

She shakes her head, shivering slightly. “I don’t know, Termina... I’ve been chased by them several times since I got here, but I saw none of them in town, but they might be responsible for this.”

“A good guess.” Sheik tells her, finally getting back to your group.

“Heh, seems those things dislike smoke more than dodongos, though. Good blast of fire drove them away.” Horon adds smugly.

Lynna looks back and forth between the two. “A-ah, sorry... I’m not sure we’ve been properly introduced. I am Lynna, Termina and I helped each other with the Temple of Nayru, clearing the corruption that was poisoning the water going through the Zora’s Domain.”

“I am Sheik. I am a close ally of Termina. I have heard of your exploits.” the Sheikah girl responds, her voice a little colder than you were expecting.

“Name’s Lord Horon, I’m here on a quest to rescue our Princess and save Hyrule!” the boy in red declares, puffing his chest up.

Lynna... frowns at him, taking a step away. “I... see.”

“We can have time for proper introductions later, we should regroup with Aveli over there.” you state.

You head back through to the clearing, Aveli removing her helmet and sighing out loud. “Got tricked by a fake Moblin. That’s a new low.”

“You weren’t the only one.” Sheik tells the Gerudo girl. “It caught us all by surprise.”

“Now, Lynna, as you were saying...?”

After everyone finishes their introductions, Lynna repeats what happened at her town, and adds how she’s spent hours in the Lost Woods trying to find her way to the Great Deku Tree, being chased by the fog monsters a few times. She sits down on a tree stump. “I can’t go back without knowing how to fix this... or at the very least, without knowing what’s going on.”

Horon crosses his arms, standing as tall as he can. “Don’t worry little lady, we’ll have this fixed in no time! Termina here has a real knack for solving these kinds of issues, and I promise that I won’t rest until your town is safe!”

She looks to him awkwardly, frowning again, as if she’s about to tell him something, before looking back to you. “You said you heard music, right, Termina? Maybe whoever is playing it knows where the Great Deku Tree is...”

“If there are more monsters like these lurking out there, then I believe it is best you stick with us, Lynna. Safety in numbers, as they say.”

She nods at you. “Thank you, Termina.”

“Do not fall behind.” Sheik tells her coldly.

“Y-yes, understood.”

You head into the next area with everyone, the song growing ever so slightly louder, your ears picking up each note from the distance. As you all walk, you ask Lynna, “Have you seen any man with masks in your area recently?”

“No, I haven’t. You’re... still looking for the person responsible for happened to those Zora?” she questions hesitantly, recalling the encounters she had in the Temple of Nayru.

“Among other things, but yes. He is still at large, and causing more trouble than before.” You focus your attention back on the song. “...Lynna, have you heard this tune before?”

“Ah, s-sorry, my ears probably don’t hear as well as yours do, Termina.” she states bashfully.

“Hey, it’s not just you. I can’t hear a thing either, just the sounds of nature.” Aveli comments.

“Same here. It’s that Mask of Truth she’s got, it’s set her on the trail we’re going down.” Horon adds, placing his hands behind his head.

You rub the back of your neck. “Ah, right... hmn, perhaps I can mimic what it sounds like.” You take a moment to stop, pulling your harp out and, carefully listening to the notes...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OHTJE5n9gQ

The tune echoes through the mostly quiet forest. You can still hear the song playing in the distance, though your notes were nearly in sync with them. Lynna pays close attention to the song. “Hmm... well, it does have a vague familiarity to it. Sounds so cheerful... but almost like it’s longing for something too.”

“Where might you have-?” Your question is interrupted by rustling in the treetops. Something up there is moving around. Perhaps it was your song that caught their attention? Hmm... the distant tune still plays, but-

“...What is that?” Horon asks, pointing upwards.

You all look up, spotting what seems to be... a child? A kid about Horon’s age, staring down at you all, dressed entirely in green. Can’t really tell if it’s a boy or girl... how did they even get up there? “...Excuse me, it’s danger-”

The child dashes away from you all, vanishing into the treetops with a rustle of leaves. Aveli scratches her head. “Spooky forest has strange forest children. Of course it does.”

“Th-that... that was a Kokiri!” Lynna proclaims.

>A. Play the song again, try and call the kid back
>B. Focus on where the kid ran off to, maybe they’re leading you somewhere?

“...Wait, so, that would mean the person playing this is a Kokiri?” you comment aloud.

“Makes sense.” Sheik comments. “They would know the path to take, would they not?”

You start to march forward. “Then let us make haste, it would be rude to keep the one calling us waiting.”

Lynna sticks closer to you, Aveli strolling behind rather casually with Horon moving ahead, Sheik alternating between paying careful attention to Lynna’s movements and watching for things in the fog. “How many times have you encountered the creatures, again?” the Sheikah girl asks Lynna.

“More than I cared to remember. They’d chased me in circles at least a dozen times now, leading me away from certain rooms...”

“Mmn. And yet they never caught you?”

She nods. “Every time I saw them, I just ran as fast as I could in the opposite direction, using my Hookshot to get me away from them if I needed. Way too many close calls...”

“Hmm... I believe I may understand what you’re getting at, Sheik.” you comment, strumming your harp again. You time it with the music you hear once more, playing the song again. And again, you hear rustling in the treetops above you, but you focus on the path ahead. You head north through two more groves, out of the corner of your eye noticing things in the fog moving, almost like they’re watching you.

But the thicker fog never creeps towards you, staying a good distance away. You head north-east next, a small game trail through the trees leading you to a larger grove with bigger patches of grass and another stream cutting through it. To your surprise, there seem to be Deku Scrubs on the other side of the stream... and as you play, they turn in their flowery shrubs almost like they’re... dancing. Lynna moves closer to you, holding onto your poncho defensively, Aveli putting her helmet back on and, while not attacking them, holding her sword out to make sure none of them try anything.

Finally, and now with the song loud enough that everyone else, even Lynna, starting to hear it, you head towards a westward path, finding a figure in strange clothing, resembling foliage in a way, with a large hat obscuring most of their face, playing on an ocarina. The figure seems to have more girlish features, though she still appears fairly young, about Aveli or Horon’s age, forest-green hair hanging down her head.

“Some enter into these woods because they are lost...” she starts, stopping her song. “...others enter because one must be lost in order to be found.” A blue fairy floats around her, lighting up her face slightly, catching Felicia’s attention... and causing her to gasp out in shock.

“What is... why is she...?” the fairy mumbles out.

She stands up on the large tree stump she was sitting on... then spins around, vanishing in a soft green flash, leaves circling around in the area she was standing. She appears again behind you all, at the entrance to the grove she’s residing in. “You have come for neither reason. You are lost, because you are seeking something.”

“We seek the Great Deku Tree’s aid in stopping the darkness creeping across these lands.” you tell the girl. “You have lead us here for a reason. Would I be correct to assume you know of our dilemmas already?”

She giggles, spinning again and disappearing, reappearing behind a tree, poking her head out playfully, a childish grin and youthful voice contrasting a more aged and... almost scolding tone she takes. “Your formality does little to disguise the person you really are. It may have worked for some... but others can catch on much quicker.”

You find your cheeks reddening slightly. “P-pardon?”

She appears on the stump once more, sitting down, chin resting on one of her palms as she playfully tosses her ocarina up in the air and catching it. “I have met those like you and your entourage before, young lady... yes, many times.” The fairy circles around you all, moving in close to check each of your faces before returning to the girl again and following her ocarina. “Though not the usual one... a shame, he was fun to pester, like his predecessor.”

“Yeah this is getting old. You gonna keep this up, or tell us what we need to know?” Horon comments, crossing his arms and pouting at her.

Felicia smacks him on the side of the head. “Manners!”

“What? Why waste time with riddles when there are things at stake?” he grumbles.

The girl giggles. “Mm... if you truly seek the Great Deku Tree, you must show you are worthy.”

“W-worthy?” Horon mumbles, gulping.

“Follow me.”

She starts to float away, a trail of leaves dancing in the wind behind her, giggling as she moves into a darker area of the Lost Woods. Well... this is not exactly what you were expecting. But it’s clear she knows more than enough already... You look to everyone. “Shall we?”

The girl leads you into a much larger clearing, tall trees sporadically placed across the area, treetops still covering most of the sunlight. The girl spins around, appearing and disappearing upon three tree stumps, before vanishing one more time.

Leaves swirl around the stumps, almost dancing in a way, swaying in certain patterns. One set moves left, right, left again, right again, before moving back down and resetting its pattern. The other set moves up twice, before moving left, then right, and finally moving down to reset its pattern as well. The final set moves left twice, then right, and finally up, before resetting.

Horon grumbles at this. “Is she trying to waste our time or something?”

“Perhaps... she’s trying to make sure we don’t run into any more of those monsters?” Lynna suggests.

“Eh, probably the case. Still T’s got us covered.” Aveli tells the boy, nodding to you confidently.

You take time to think over the patterns. If the girl is trying to guide you away from the monsters in the fog... then it is just like before, the directions you took. You slowly walk towards the stump you think most closely matches the directions you were given, the third.

A pathway seems to clear through the mist beyond the stump. You smile wide, everyone giving you a slight cheer. “Hah, what’d I tell you?” Aveli asks.

“That’s a relief... looks like you’re sharp as ever, Termina.” Lynna adds.

You all head down the pathway, leaves dancing slightly around you through the parted fog, until you come across another clearing. And there...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY4ez5IpQuE

The girl’s laughter calls your attention once more, laying on top of the remains of an ancient pillar, ruins of a stone building scattered around the clearing. They seem... odd, almost like they once belonged to a large mansion. “Clever, clever, clever... so you do know how to pay attention.”

“Lynna helped give me the idea. I take it there will be another up ahead?” you ask.

She giggles again. “You’re almost there.”

The girl vanishes once more, some of the fog clearing to reveal a pair of fairies. Their patterns are similar, both of them traveling upwards in swirling motions twice, then right, then up again, then left... though when they head down to start over, one moves to the right, the other moving to the left.

The girl appears between them, smiling at you. “I do hope you paid attention.”

“Okay, seriously, who are you?” Horon asks her, marching forward. “That creepy face you keep making isn’t exactly making you seem less suspicious, you weird girl.”

...Creepy face? You pull up the Mask of Truth for a moment, and you see her features change drastically. Her skin becomes a pale, grey-ish blue, her face with piercing orange eyes and a terrifying grin, even her hair disappearing. As Horon gets close to her she vanishes again... appearing on the boy’s head, kicking off it and doing a flip before landing in front of you, bringing her finger to her lips. As you pull the mask back down, you see her wink at you very briefly before she vanishes once more.

“You can call me ‘Skull Kid.’” her voice echoes through the woods.

Aveli makes sure the boy’s okay before looking back to you. “...Something wrong, T?”

While suspicious, you feel there’s a reason she’s masking her appearance like that. “Nothing for now, just seems Linkle was right about her.”

Lynna tilts her head at you, but stays quiet, instead focusing on the fairies dancing ahead of you all. “...If she’s giving us these tests, is there a reason I didn’t hear them earlier?”

“Perhaps there are only certain paths that remain ‘safe,’ perhaps she is keeping these paths open for a reason.” Sheik comments to the young woman, crossing her arms. “If she is aware of the dangers these monsters pose, she may be trying to limit their abilities as best she can.”

“You’re talking about her like she has control of the entire... forest...” Horon comments, nonchalantly at first, but quickly realizing what that idea entails. “...she does, doesn’t she?”

“If so, we should do as she asks and follow her instructions.” you tell the boy. Hrmn... if it’s just the difference at the end, and if it’s like the previous one... then you should go... right.

You take a step along the right path, and the fog parts again. With a confident grin across your face, you start move forward. Everyone follows your lead, heading through the path, the fairies that were dancing around circling towards your group. Out of the corner of your eye you spot one of the Fog Moblins, keeping its distance from you, but nonetheless following you all. For a brief moment the creature seems to distort its shape, looking like its whole body becomes a large hand, before vanishing back into the fog.

The path is longer than the previous one, and it takes a few minutes before you’re able to reach it, but finally you arrive at a much larger hollowed out log. Traveling through it, pushing aside some large shrubs and branches, you catch a glimpse of a gigantic tree... and Skull Kid laying on her back, legs crossed, one foot bouncing slightly as her hat covers her face.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY4ez5IpQuE

She laughs again, turning her head towards you. “Ah, so you are good at following directions, young lady. You and everyone in your group, even little red over there.”

Horon frowns at her again. “...Look, we figured out why you’re doing this, but can you skip the riddles and just go right to helping us out?”

Skull Kid turns her head back towards the gigantic tree. “Your tone is not befitting your title, little red. Your father taught you better than that, especially when addressing your elders.”

“E-elders?” Horon mumbles, confused.

“If she did know the previous Heroes, she is hundreds of years old.” Sheik comments.

The boy blushes in embarrassment. “A-ah. S-sorry...”

Skull Kid stands up. “It would seem he is ready to see you all... mind your manners, now.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjIk8m80cnY

You look over to the gigantic tree, the wood across its massive trunk and roots... distorting, forming a large face. A face... with a massive hole in the side of it, blackened mist swirling around inside, some spilling out from it. You see what looks like a gigantic hand inside the tree, made of the same material as the dark mist. Just like... just like the monster you noticed on the path here. And for a brief, terrifying moment, a piercing red eye can be seen in the hole, one that stares down at you, unblinking, before vanishing into the mist.

You gulp. “Great Deku Tree... from your situation, I can tell you require assistance. Would I be wrong to assume you know our reason for coming here, too?”

Skull Kid seems to roll her eyes at you. “Good thing some of those you interact with are dense as rocks, or those words would seem suspect.”

The Great Deku Tree seems to speak, but its words are... incomprehensible to your ears, some sounding vaguely familiar, but exceptionally archaic. From their tone, though, they seem to be telling Skull Kid to not to be so harsh. She sticks her tongue out at him and blows raspberries childishly, but seems to agree to his request. The tree’s speech becomes more recognizable as it begins to address your group. “I know many things, young one, about your plight, the plight of the land. I may be able to answer your questions, but I request you help lift this curse in return.”

You nod. “A fair trade... especially if the one who cursed you is who I suspect.”

Well, might as well start with the most pressing question. “Great Deku Tree, you must be aware of the man with masks. What do you know of him?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf_odnytqHc

The features on his face seem to contort with pain. “I know of him... but even I do not know all about him. From what I can tell, his origins predate even my own... perhaps going so far back as to have known one of the first Heroes.”

“W-wait, this guy going out there, doing all this creepy stuff is... some kind of ancient, malevolent force?” Horon questions.

“His true motives are elusive. While his current actions have certainly taken him down a dark path, true malevolence was not common in his prior scattered appearances. Perhaps the Malice of a dark being older than even he has taken hold of him... perhaps he has simply met with a Terrible Fate. What I do know is that he has plans for Hyrule, for Ganon, for the incarnation of evil sealed away a century ago. He has gone to great lengths to awaken powerful, dark spirits, to spread a corrupting power through the land... even I have proven incapable of guarding myself from his trickery.”

Skull Kid looks away from the tree, her childish face growing heavy, full of regret. You get the feeling that she may have attempted to stop this herself... “What has happened to you, exactly? And what should we do to help you?”

“The Lost Woods are an enchanted place, the magic in these grounds wild, untamed, meant to drive away those with darker intentions, meant to protect my children. Though even I am at a loss to describe how it happened, this man seems to have found out how to spread the magic from these woods beyond their borders. He came to me with an entourage of corrupted creatures, and has cursed me, letting this wild magic grow out of control; he may plan to spread this all across Hyrule, at this rate.”

“That’s awful...” Lynna adds. “Then... my home is just the beginning?”

Hearing Lynna speak up, you remember to ask, “Great Deku Tree, what has become of the townsfolk taken by this fog already? Those who reside within Lynna’s home town?” You look back at the young woman, who smiles appreciatively at you in return.

“Trapped within the fog, much akin to the forest, but now aimlessly wandering, unable to escape... to free me from this curse, to stop the spread of this fog and save those lost in it, you must quell the creature feeding off my power. I know not how long I have... but I know I can not endure this indefinitely.” The Great Deku Tree seems to grown as the swirling mist inside him almost... pulses, like a beating heart.

Skull Kid grits her teeth, still looking away. You give the Great Deku Tree a determined nod. “Understood, kind spirit. Show us the way, and we will do what we can to lift this curse.”

A patch of earth beneath the tree’s roots, under its face, starts to sink away, revealing a staircase made of wood leading under the tree. “I wish you all well... but be warned, as I fear the creatures residing within are expecting you... they know who you all are.”

Your body tenses up slightly, but you resolve not to be deterred by the ominous statement. You look back to everyone and nod, starting to move towards the opening... but you hold back, for just a moment. “...I am sorry to delay this, but there is one more thing I must know. In Hyrule Castle, Sheik and I met a creature that was tracking the phases of the moon... do you know what connection the moon has with all this?”

The Great Deku Tree seems to creak and groan for a moment. “...The moon... the moon... ah, perhaps I do. If the man’s intentions are connected with Ganon’s... if he wishes to influence Ganon’s return... then this all makes more sense. He wishes to preform a ritual to create a Blood Moon... to corrupt the land so far that the monsters slain will return to flesh, that even Ganon will return in physical form.”

Everyone stares at the Great Deku Tree in shock. “He... he can do that?”

Sheik rubs her chin. “It may be why he’s tried all this... many of these incidents seemed disconnected at first, but putting them all together, each one has a common element behind them. Spreading some form of corruptive evil across Hyrule. The Fairy Temples that try to keep the land pure, the resting dragon in the Spirit Temple, the Master Sword, Evil’s Bane and the object able to cast back the darkness, even here, spreading the magic of the Lost Woods beyond its borders... if even one of these shows some kind of success, he would have what he needs for that ritual!”

“...Goddesses.” you breathe out. “Then we cannot fail! I promise, we will save you, oh spirit of the woods, and stop this man’s nefarious plot!”

“I thank you all. Best of luck, and may the Goddesses watch over you.”
