Sorry about the late start! lost track of time watching someone play children of a dead earth. looks fun, kinda, but I feel like large scale engagements would get out of control very quickly.

Anyway, going to try a slow burn thread over the course of the week this time, so don't expect too many story updates tonight, maybe just 2-3. I'll try to post one a day during the week, but can't promise anything- we're gearing up to ship the second unit this weekend, and it's always a struggle to get stuff crated and ready to go in the day. We'll see how it goes, but if I miss a couple, that's why. I'll try to make it up to you if I do.

Other than that, no real news, haha!

++++

The ungainly form of the C-2 Greyhound COD bird seems to plod it's way onto the deck, the roar of it's turboprops deafening, even from your perch up on the observation deck on the island. It's pilot still manages to snag the number three wire with his tailhook though.

"There she is." Anastasia says from her spot next to you. You grunt in response- Kimberly Wells isn't exactly who you'd have picked, given the choice, but at this point it's too late to complain. She's competent and talented in her fields, true, but she's both younger than aunt Merlin was when she started flying with your dad- and far more possessive where you're concerned.

"It's only for this cruise" Your sister reminds you, and you shake your head.

"I doubt it." You respond. "VDNI crews aren't like others. Have you ever seen dad fly with anyone other than aunt Merlin?"

Anastasia scrunches up her faces as she thinks on it- and realizes you're right. Other than a brief period where he flew Ravens before leaving the navy, your dad has only ever flown with Merlin.

"But she's still in just her second year." She points out. "And there's no way they'll let you sit at a desk or whatever while she completes the rest of her academy time. Even if you weren't a Bishop, you're a fenrir pilot, you're to expensive to not do anything with."

"Sure, but I am a Bishop." You point out. "And dad's only son-"

"That we know of."

You give your sister a dirty look before continuing. "And dropping me back in Annapolis near all the witches in the academy there works a lot better for the matrons than keeping me aboard a ship where nearly half the witches are my family."

"And your mom would raise all kinds of unholy hell if she thought that's what they were doing and you know it." She points out. "And dad probably would too."

She's right, and you know it. You turn away from the flight deck, headed back inside the island.

"Hey wait! Where are we going now?" Anastasia asks.

[] Down to the flight deck hatch, you may as well greet Kim when she gets in.
[] Down to the Hangar deck, we'll meet the ground crew and give our fighter a once over
[] Back to the squad bay. everyone's back now, so we can meet them all at once.

So ghost, with the slowburn thread idea how'll the voting period work? 12 hours? 24? Variable, with the cutoff posted by you? Depend son whether it's the weekend or the weekdays? Updates through the week means checking in to vote during the week too, after all.

[x] Down to the flight deck hatch, you may as well greet Kim when she gets in.

"Down to the flight deck hatch." you respond, indicating the C-2 with a tilt of your head.

"Oh boy." Anastasia says. "Here we go."

You don't respond- though you maybe do drag your feet a little as you head down the narrow, steep ladderwell towards the hatch in the side of the island.

Kim is down there, with a green shirted cargo handler just stepping through the hatch, carrying what you assume is her sea bag. She's got a smaller pack on her back and a laptop bag held under her arm- and, of course, she's bareleg. You kinda have to admire her dedication to the witch's privilege- Aunt Merlin almost never goes bareleg at all, and technically, with this being her apprentice cruise, she's not exactly supposed to.

She turns her head at the sound of your boots on the ladderwell- and smiles. It falters a little as Anastasia descends behind you- she doesn't much like 'competing' with your sisters, and never has. She's not as given to saying embarrassing things in public as her sister, thankfully, but occasionally her actions can be a bit off-putting, especially around other witches.

"Morgan!" She exclaims- still happy enough to see you, even with Anastasia there. She doesn't quite run over to you, but you still rock back a bit as she slams into you, her arms wrapping around your abdomen, her head in your chest. "Oh my gosh I was so excited when they said we'd be flying together!" She says. She looks up at you, still not releasing you from her hug. "Isn't this great? We'll be just like mom and Uncle Frank!"

"Hello, Kim." Anastasia says as she steps up alongside you. "How was your flight?"

"Boring." Kim says, before looking back up at you. "Did you get our fighter, Morgan? how is it? Can we go see it now?"

[] We should probably go meet the rest of the unit first, Kim.
[] Sure, now's as good as time as any.

[x] We should probably go meet the rest of the unit first, Kim.

"We'll go meet the rest of the squadron first, Kim." You say, gently pushing her back away from you a bit.

She looks slightly disappointed, but doesn't say anything- though she does pout at you for a split second before you start to turn around to head down into the ship. You don't see her reaction, not quite, but she does rush to grab your hand as you start down the next set of ladders.

Anastasia doesn't react- though you can practically feel her disapproval at the move. You don't bother saying anything- it wouldn't do any good right now anyway, and your mom did always teach you to bear small things like this and not step on anyone's feelings if it can be avoided. Especially if it's not going to do much good, as in this case.

The green-shirted handler follows the three of you down, only relieving himself of Kim's bag next to the hatch to the squad bay. Anastasia holds up a hand before you step in. "Let me go in first." She says. "Just to make sure."

"It's not gonna work if you have to do that all the time." You point out, and she nods.

"I know. just gimme a second."

You shrug. "Go ahead then."

She nods, stepping in through the door. You can hear voices in there for a minute before they stop and the door opens. "Alright Morgan." Anastasia says.

You step in to what almost feels like a court. Three witches stand in a sort of semi-circle in front of you- the tall brunette you'd seen earlier with Anastasia, a blonde of about middling height, and another girl with long, almost jet black hair.

The three of them look you up and down in silence- you can feel Kim scoot herself a bit closer to you- before the blonde speaks.

"You're Bishop?"

"Laroux-Bishop." you correct.

She snorts. "So it is true. The mother of night and the Butcher-"

"Careful, Kat." Anastasia warns. "He's my dad, too." Her tone of voice isn't quite heated, but it's enough to carry the warning across clearly.

>>
You shrug. "Is my parentage going to be a problem, Commander?" You ask, reading the rank pins on her blouse.

She sighs and shakes her head as if to clear it. "No, and I'm sorry. We just lost a man- it's not easy, you know?"

You elect to not say anything. She presses on after a second. "Your element lead is going to be Lieutenant commander William Smith." She says. "He's probably in the hangar bay right now, he and Una practically live there."

"Una's his witch?" Kim asks

"Not HIS witch, kid." One of the other girls- the brunette- snarls. "Witches don't belong to-"

"Becc. Enough." Kirsten says, before turning back to you. "Look, Lieutenant, I'm going to apologize in advance. It's never easy and losing someone in peacetime, somehow that's worse."

You nod.

"Anyway. I'm Commander Kirsten Piper. The one next to me, this is lieutenant commander Rebecca O'hare."

O'hare, for her part, doesn't say anything- though she does spare an angry glance to send your way. You don't bother giving her anything back but a blank look.

"I'm Lieutenant Jessica Cunningham." The other witch says, the first she's spoken. Her voice is neutral and level.

Apparently she reads something in your expression and nods. "Yes, that Cunningham. He was my grandpa. And no, I haven't talked to him since the scandal."

You nod- you're aware, vaguely, of what she's talking about, but to you it doesn't have much to do with her.

"I'm Lieutenant Junior grade Morgan Laroux-Bishop." You say- not information to anyone, you suppose, though sometimes hearing it directly from you still has an effect. Indeed, you see Jessica and Rebecca's eyes widen slightly at your words.

"And I'm his systems operator. Ensign Kimberly Wells." Kim says from her spot next to you.

"You seem awful young to be plugged." Rebecca says, looking at Kim.

"I'm not." Kim says. "I've got to use the adapter system for right now, this is my apprentice cruise."

Kirsten's eyes narrow at that. "They put an apprentice on one of my Fenrirs?"

"I'm a Wells." Kim says, sounding a bit miffed. "I can do this better than anyone else and we work with Bishops better than anyone else."

"Based on all of one team." Rebecca points out. "How the hell are you supposed to handle that thing without plugs?"

"I'm a WELLS." Kim repeats, heat rising in her voice.

[] Interrupt before this gets out of hand. We'll see how it goes, if it's a problem, you'll take it to commander Piper
[] Side with Rebecca- a Fenrir is no place for an apprentice, especially one without plugs.
[] Side with Kim- Wells witches have the strongest technology affinity known, she'll be fine.

Anybody else not like Kim already?
>>
>>2192205
So far, sounds like she was the lesser of two evils. We're stuck with her for the foreseeable future though, so we ought to give her a fair shake. And she's extremely green; with some luck she'll mellow out some over time.
>>
>>2192317
It sounds like she's the annoying younger girl you have to hang out with because your parents make you and has a crush on you. More like a sister than anything else.

As for the lesser of two evils, well we don't know anyone else yet. Not really. I'll give her a shot but Merlin only worked out because she was that damn good and wasn't boastful about it. Kim is... the opposite.

>>
>>2192867
That might be a little on the nose, yes, though I can see us being friendly with the specops-types, considering our mother and quiet and intense nature. Considering how clannish they tend to be, having an in with them might be interesting.

Well, and I doubt they'd stick us in a mixed squad like this only to detach us for specops stuff.
>>
Ok, so! Vote cutoff will be 2000 EST, since I can pretty reliably get home by then- if I'm not, they probably kept us SUPER late, but I'll try to be (Since work's already pissed me off pretty badly, I probably won't be staying much if I can help it). We'll run a normal thread Saturday to cap off the week, then start another Sunday- so there's going to be a more or less constant run, just the same as there would be if I ever get enough on pateron to make my money as a content creator!

[x] Interrupt before this gets out of hand. We'll see how it goes, if it's a problem, you'll take it to commander Piper

"If it becomes an issue, we'll take it to commander Piper." You say, just as Becc's mouth opens to retort again.

The commander nods, happy enough to accept your word on that. "That's fine. Wells, we'll still be talking later about what's going to be expected of you here." She turns to look at you. "We'll be having the same discussion later"

"Ma'am."

"Alright." She says, sighing a bit. "I'd say it's good to have you, but under the circumstances, you'll understand if I say I really wish we didn't have to."

You nod, but as you turn to leave, she speaks up again. "One last thing- we're going to just call you Lieutenant Laroux. We've already got a Bishop." She indicates Ana, who grins at you.

"Sorry bro." She says. "Besides, dad loves me the most of anyone on this ship anyway."

You snort at that. "Sure he does."

"OK. well, I'm done with you, and I don't think anyone else has any questions or comments they need to make" The commander says, looking left and right at the other witches, who shake their heads. "Our mess calls are at oh-five, thirteen, and eighteen if you're not on flight ops. if you are on flight, someone will bring you food wherever you're at. The mess hall is open all hours for light stuff. We're none too formal, but we do try to all eat at the same time, so that'll include you two as well. As far as it goes, we don't use rank too much among each other, but the skipper happens to think it's good for morale if we're seen to be living under the same rules as everyone else. She also wants to keep at least one Fenrir on alert twenty four seven, so you'll be swapping out with Billy and Una once you get squared away. Take any of the racks over there-" She points to the righthand side, where you've already stacked the linens on the bare racks. "And grab a locker."

"Yes, Ma'am." You nod.

"Alright, that's it. For real this time." She says. "Now if you;ll excuse me, I'm going to take a shower, finally. Salt spray is murder on my hair."

And with that she spins on her heel and practically sprints away, reaching down, apparently without thought to your presence, to peel off her flight jacket and shirt. Anastasia watches her go as the other two witches turn to chase her.

"That's pretty normal." She says, indicating the three of them.

1/2
>>
"What about you?" you ask. "Don't you need to shower?"

She shakes her head. "Already did, earlier."

"When?" You ask- as far as you know, she's been with you the entire time she's been back aboard.

"Right after I got back down. There's some showers in the other witch quarters back aft that I can use since we're the only squadron aboard." She says. "Normally they're closed up without another squadron with the air group, but I've got a spare key. I'll get one for you if you want one- it can be a nice place to catch a nap if you're off duty and don't want to be bothered."

You shrug- it also sounds like a good place to have a couple uninterrupted hours with someone you might be seeing, but you don't bother mentioning that. Ana isn't really that kind of girl- you can't actually remember her taking any kind of interest in anyone like that, but you also haven't seen her in nearly a year.

"So where to now, Morgan?" Kim asks. "We should go see the fighter and start working on integration, since I still have to use the adapter gear."

"It's getting close to afternoon chow." Anastasia points out. "And Kat wasn't kidding about us trying to take meals together. You could get your stuff squared away here and then go down to the hangar after you eat, too."

[] We can wait till the evening meal- we'll go down and get to work on the fighter's systems.

[Z] We can wait till the evening meal- we'll go down and get to work on the fighter's systems.

Because if we're going to be Squadron Punching Bag, might as well be competent and on-top of our job at least.

Also

[x] Yeah, that's a good plan, we'll eat first, then go to work.

You nod. "Fair enough. I'll get my shit squared away."

"So what's it like?" Ana asks, perching herself on her rack and watching as you and Kim get your personal effects in your own bunks- in your case, almost nothing, really. A couple books you'd brought along, and a poncho liner your mother gave you.

"What's what like?" You ask, looking over at Kim, who seems kind of subdued from her usual self- the reality of the situation setting in, no doubt.

"The plugs." She clarifies, poking at the back of her own neck with a finger and making a face.

"What about them?"

"What's it like? flying with them, I mean?"

"Haven't you asked dad about this?"

She makes another face at you, sticking out her tongue.

You shrug. "I haven't flown much with it active." You say. "Our combat computer isn't even live yet, since I had to wait for my systems operator."

"You waited for me?" Kim asks, almost sounding like she can't believe her good fortune- like you had a choice.

"VDNI required it." You state somewhat flatly. "the Boeing techs wouldn't even install the correct feeds for it without a SO present."

"Oh." the sound comes out small- though you know Kim well enough to know that her feelings aren't going to be hurt for long, if they are at all. She goes back to getting the linens on her own bunk without further comment.

"What's the squadron like?" You ask, before Anastasia can really prod. She can be pretty determined, when she wants to be.

"It's not so bad. We don't have the wartime record of spellcaster, of course, but they've been riding on the reputation dad and aunt Merlin and the moms made for them for the last twenty years." She says. "VF7 has a good enough service record, they were in the pacific for the duration though, so they missed all the fights in Europe."

"But they were active in Alaska." You point out.

1/2
>>
Anastasia nods. "They were active in Alaska, and were in the battle of the Bering strait, but arrived too late to make a difference. Mostly they spent the war fighting alongside the IJN against the Chinese in the south china sea and the sea of japan. All their witches made ace, but they weren't a composite squadron back then."

"How recent is that?" You ask.

She shrugs. "Garcia was one of the early steelwing pilots assigned to the unit. That's part of why this is so bad." she says. "It's pre 9/11, but not much before that, I think right around the fleet reorganization in the late 90s? You could ask Becca if you want, she probably knows the exact date."

"Maybe at chow." You respond. "So, Black angels? What's your mom's stance on nose art?"

She shrugs. "It's technically allowed, they haven't messed with that reg. Nixon's memory is still too strong to really overrule that kind of thing, and mom would be the last person to go against anything he said, after what he did for dad. We've got a couple pretty good artists with the unit, but the marines have the best guy for it with their aircraft maintainers."

"We should be careful with that, Morgan." Kim points out, climbing onto your rack just as you get the covers smoothed out and inspection-passable. "The paint on the Fenrir isn't normal, it's radar-absorbent. Nose art might compromise that."

You frown at her. "We'll worry about it later." you say, lifting her off your rack and depositing her on her own, turning to smooth back out the wrinkles in the covers there and draw the curtain back, concealing your bunk from view.

Anastasia laughs. "Well, you know how dad got his."

"And I don't plan on copying it." You respond. "I'm not dad."

"Sorry, Sorry." She says- though her voice indicates she's really not that sorry. "I'm sure we'll be able ot figure out something."

"I'm sure."

She laughs. "C'mon. they'll be out of the showers soon, and we can go eat."

Almost as soon as she says it, your squadron leader steps out of the attached heads, skin still steaming from the shower, a towel wrapped around her torso and another on her head. "We'll go in a second, Bishop." She says, walking around the corner, behind the racks, to change into clothes. "You and Laroux and Wells go ahead, we'll meet you in a couple minutes."

"Are Billy and Una going to be there?"

"Doubt it." Your commander responds, her voice carefully neutral. "They've been going over their steelwing almost nonstop since- " She pauses. "Since-"

"Go ahead and go." Anastasia says to you, her voice quiet enough to make it across to you without carrying to Commander Piper. "I'll stay here and help her."

Spellcaster would go combat ineffective for a while everytime Frank went down or got hurt. Despite her other issues, Wilkins wasn't wrong about how hard it hit witches to lose their steelwings. I'm not surprised they are a mess.

>>2195956
Seems reasonable, if a bit difficult to practice at sea. Is there anything we would have picked up from Maman that would travel better?

I for one support Morgan with some sort of instrument that he plays, and it's the most emotional shit, completely at odds with his external appearance. He just puts SOUL into it.

As for what else, I think he might have kinda "boring" solitary hobbies. Low key, relaxed stuff. Fishing, reading, maybe even sketching.

Blues sax or trumpet. He's from New Awlins after all.
>>
>>2196077
So HEARTFELT Music, scratchbuilding cars and motocycles. I can also dig the reading and sketching. Also if Morgan grew up in anything even remotely resembling rural Louisiana there's no way he didn't go Noodling at least once. That counts as fishing right?

We'd still need a 'range' of some sort, though that does fit Morgan pretty well.

>>2196062
I like music. Harmonics works, or maybe something slightly more exotic, like a steel guitar or a trumpet, or maybe something that travels easier, like an ocarina or a flute. I dunno, there's all kind of weird instruments if you go looking.

Morgan's standards of "Terrifying" are probably sky high, given his parents and their friends.

[x] Sounds like good advice- you don't know enough to help

You nod- that's good advice, since you barely know the squadron at all, certainly not enough to insert yourself into personal issues as weighty as death. Besides- you have no idea how close the two of them were, and you're living proof that pilots can get very close with witches. Your sister being living proof that that can happen fairly easily in squadrons, even.

You get Kims attention and jerk your head towards the door- she nods and slips off her rack, stepping out of the hatch and turning to wait for you. You close it behind you as you exit the squad bay, letting it isolate you from anything going on in there.

Kim frowns up at you. "She's unprofessional." She states.

"She lost a crew." You respond. "Ask your mother how Spellcaster dealt with it when Dad went down over Alaska."

She frowns, thinking about it. The story is one they know, of course- it's a lesson in some of the classes at Annapolis about keeping your distance, and the utter necessity of doing so in a composite unit. Granted, no one pays attention to them, but they're taught, which is probably enough, as far as the navy is concerned.

"Oh." she says, quietly. Kim's always been a bit haughty- the Wells name is good enough, and her family wealthy enough, that she never developed the humility aunt Merlin has about herself, but she's still well-behaved enough to accept it when you correct her. Either that, or she's only doing so because it's you, specifically, that's correcting her, you think briefly before deciding it's not worth the effort to worry about. Either way, she has enough sense to not bring it up with the squadron, and that's enough for you.

The Officer's mess aboard the Saratoga is large, especially compared to the one aboard the Coral Sea, and fairly loud, to boot. There's still a bit of a training atmosphere aboard the ageless warrior, though it's nothing like OCS, it's still bad enough. Here, everyone talks freely. You still have to get in line, of course- behind a couple of marine pilots, no less- but the food looks plenty good. Or maybe you're just hungry.

There's hardly a second glance sent your way when you finally find the table marked with a placard on the end, indicating it belongs to your new squadron- VF-7 "Black Angels." You take a seat near an end, with Kim, perhaps predictably, sitting right next to you.

1/2
>>
"You're awful quiet." Kim says a few minutes after sitting down. "Are you mad at me?"

"Why would I be?" You ask honestly- something your mother always taught you was never, ever get into something you'll regret, and this feels like something you'll regret.

"Well, you don't seem excited that I'm here." She continues, poking vaguely at her lunch- a salad.

"There's still a lot for us to do." You say, deflecting the accusation with a shrug. "And there's a lot going on with the squadron."

"Yeah... " Kim responds, somewhat quietly. "What do you think happened?"

"I'm not sure." You say, looking over at her. "And we need to keep quiet about it. When they're ready to talk about it, if they ever want to, they will."

"Ok." She says, nodding.

It's only another minute or two before you see the witches walk in- all four of them in a group. They go through the line quickly and take up seats at the table, leaving a few vacancies. Commander Piper looks over at them breifly before looking at you.

"Sorry about that, in the squad bay." She says. "I- we-" She stops, exhales, and looks down for a second. "We're not taking this well at all."

[] Ask if she's thought to ask the skipper for advice- you know for a fact VF3 went to pieces once or twice.
[] Nod- you understand, and aren't worried about it. Your maman told you it was never easy, losing a man.

Both options are good, but I think that we should say the 2nd option first, followed by the 1st. That way she knows that we aren't worried about it before we ask her if she's gone for advice.

The other option feels like a cross between stating the obvious and telling her how to do her job. This is more personable.

[x] Nod- you understand, and aren't worried about it. Your maman told you it was never easy, losing a man.

You nod- you understand, having had this kind of conversation with your mother before. She said that things like this- how one death could almost render an entire unit incapable of combat for weeks. She'd used the example of spellcaster during the war- when your dad went down out near the Alaska town of Tanana. The other times weren't so bad, you knew- having heard from everyone involved.

The exception was after Crete. They've all been remarkably close-mouthed about the whole incident, but you've pieced enough together to have a pretty good idea of just what happened.

Still, Piper looks relieved to see it. "Thanks." She says simply.

"So, Morgan." The black haired one- Jessie, you think her name was- says. "Tell us about yourself."

You shrug. "Not much to tell. You know who my folks are, so it's not like I ever had much of an option. Top of the class at Annapolis, top of my class at basic and advanced flight. My pick of airframes, went with the Fenrir."

"Why?" Rebecca asks.

You shrug again. "Might as well go all in and be the best at it." You state- a truism you've lived by. Besides, you know if you'd have selected any other airframe, you'd always be in the shadows of your father and big sisters- Dad made the Wyvern what it is today, practically, and Stasya and Lilya are still renowned as some of the best Raven drivers to ever flown.

Kirsten laughs. "That simple, huh?"

You nod.

"And Anastasia says you're pretty up to speed on coven dealings?" Piper asks.

You nod hesitantly. "More or less." You allow.

"like what?"

"Like I'm the son of Brigitte Laroux and Frank Bishop." You say, returning her gaze levelly. "Moreso than my sisters, I'm going to be an item of interest to any coven I come into contact with."

"So you don't plan on walking right into the middle of it like your father did?"

"Not if I can help it." You say.

"Speaking of, are you a guardian of witches, too?" Jessie asks.

You shake your head. "It's not hereditary. It's an earned position." You respond.

"So you don't have all the rights and privileges he has."

You shake your head. "Not really, no."

"But he's a Bishop." Anastasia states. "So a lot of that is waived for him."

1/2
>>
"Bishop-Laroux." You remind her. "I can go places even you can't, Ana."

She frowns at that- you're right, but she doesn't like being reminded of it. The Louisiana coven- your mother's coven- effectively claims you as one of their own. It's been a blessing for most of your life- they're small, but incredibly politically powerful, and one of the last few independent covens in the United States. You're not a witch, so of course you don't actually belong to the coven, but you're close enough that you're welcome anywhere they are.

"So you're an item of interest?" Kat asks.

"Probably." you state.

"What's that going to mean for me?"

"Well," Ana says, answering for you, "Mom said the matrons tried to interfere with the squadron a lot during the war, especially after interest picked up with Dad and Aunt Merlin."

"Mom says they tried to split them up." Kim affirms, nodding. "But that won't ever happen with Me and Morgan, I won't let it."

A bit of laughter runs around the table at that.

"You won't let it?" Rebecca asks. "Kid, you're not even a full ensign, and your family name ain't good enough for you to have that kind of pull."

"Wells is a good enough name!" Kim shoots back. "And mom's important enough that she'd side with me!"

[x] Let this one play out and finish eating. There's not always going to be someone to step in, and Kim's with the fleet now, she's got to learn to behave.

You decide to let this little argument play out- afterall, She's with the fleet now, and Kim's got to learn that if she's going to go navy, she's going to have to behave occasionally.

"Your mother's reputation is good with the navy, sure." Rebecca allows, nodding. "Most of us would be honored to meet her. But you're not your mother." She says rather pointedly. "Even Laroux there couldn't get by by just claiming his parents would back him up, and his folks are the mother of night herself and Frank fucking Bishop."

Kim sits, sullenly silent, as the older witch continues.

"And you'll do what you're told, because you're navy- or you can hand in your resignation to the skipper, pack your crap out of the squad bay, and wait for the first greyhound home." She continues. "You're an apprentice. that's it. There's no way they're going to leave him to sit on his ass as a fenrir driver while you finish out your academy time- And at this rate, you're never gonna."

"Becc. enough." Piper says, stepping in, before looking over at Kim, who's looking down at the table, silently. "She's not wrong, Wells. This isn't the first year of academy, you're in the fleet right now, and it's not the 80s when you can just drop out and start flying with a commission. You're a provisional ensign right now, you'll do what the navy tells you to. Understood?"

Kim mumbles something under her breath.

"What was that, Ensign?"

"Yes ma'am." Kim says, her voice quiet and maybe a bit strained, but still enough to reach across the table. For her part, Piper doesn't push the point.

"Alright. If you're done eating, you can go." Piper says, looking over at you as well. "I want you two to get your fighter set up."

1/2
>>
You nod. "How much effort do you want us to put into integration?" You ask.

"What do you mean?" Piper says. "I thought it was just, ya know. one thing."

"Sort of." Kim supplies, looking up. Her eyes are watery, you can see, but her voice is relatively normal. "But Morgan is plugged, and I'm not. You can't integrate an adapter system nearly as tightly as a plugged witch. So either we integrate him completely and do the best we can with me and make it harder for when I'm plugged, or we try to keep it as limited as possible so that it's easier later on."

"What about if there's another SO sent in at the end of your cruise?" Rebecca asks.

Kim shakes her head. "Then the first option is the best. But it also means we're going to be less capable in the air than we would be with tighter integration- I can't get information to him as quickly, or do damage control and ECM nearly as well."

"But if we integrate the adpapter-"

"Then it's pattern bound to me." Kim says, nodding. "It's one of the biggest flaws in VDNI- you can't change crews too much, or very easily at all. It's like being married, only much more so." She looks over at you. "That's why you hardly ever have only one crewmember survive out of a VDNI aircraft."

It's the wrong thing to say- but by the look on her face, Kim knows it was a mistake when she says it.

Piper takes a second before turning to address you. "What's your take, Laroux?"

So if we did a full integration with the adapter on Kim and when she gets plugged it's more difficult because you have to reintegrate?

Perhaps the difference is full integration vs tight integration, they're not mutually exclusive necessarily. Like full integration is with the bird and tight integration is with the person
>>
>>2201520
Could be, but then why would bird integration make the later person integration more difficult?
>>
>>2201558
It's less bird integration making it difficult and more of a combination of the two. Also in Kims case she does say its going from a full/tight(as you can with the adapter) integration to integrating with a plug is whats difficult. Of course this is just my drunken ramblings about it, probably way off
>>
>>2201595
Now that I think about it, I wonder if full is easier for new crew because the new crew doesn't have to relearn the integration, like an a crew with an adaptor and a full integration would?

"Limited integration." You say without any hesitation. "It'll make our lives easier later on, and we can always spend the man-hours to complete it later if we need to."

"And it'll make integration easier when I come back." Kim points out. "Trying to do a full integration with an adapter makes it much harder to do one with a live set of implants, even for the same person."

"Why?" Anastasia asks.

"It's complicated." Kim responds. "The easiest way to think of it is trying to memorize someone through fogged glass, like a shower. The computer can't get a good enough look at your brain wave pattern to really form a picture of you through the adapter, and when you come back, you look so different that it goes into fits."

"And it'd be the same for another person coming in after you?"

Kim frowns. "Yes, mostly. They'd have the same problem, but they wouldn't even have the added advantage of having some similarities to the existing picture the computer has. It's usually easier to do a complete hard reset of the combat computer then, though that means that you lose all the experience the computer has acquired."

"I'm still too out of it to wrap my head around all this." Rebecca states, standing up suddenly- earning her a sharp look from Commander Piper. "I'm headed back to the squad bay."

Kim watches her go without comment, thankfully.

"Bishop, why don't you escort your brother and Wells down to the hangar deck and get them acquainted with the way we do things in VF7 and make sure our Strikers are stowed correctly this time- I had to fly with wet padding the entire time and I'd rather not repeat that if I can avoid it. And make sure our weapons are kept on their damn racks this time, I don't want to have to get them unlocked because the master at arms got carried away. Again."

Anastasia cracks a slight smile. "Yes, ma'am."

"Jess, go see if you can't get hold of the shore schedule for the port call in Yokosuka." She further orders as you stand up. "With any luck we get a bit of time to play tourist again, I'd like to visit that BBQ place just off base again."

"I can already tell you Morgan and I will have to visit our aunt Jessica." Anastasia warns. Kat nods.

"Yeah, I figured. Don't worry about it if you can't get out with us, it's not a big deal. Ok, everybody good? Get moving."

"C'mon, let's go." Anastasia says, leading you out of the mess after dropping your trays in the collection window. "How long will this take?"

"Twenty four to forty eight hours." Kim responds. "At least. I can get it down to about sixteen, I'm sure, but that's still at least two days of work without problems."

"Not too bad, then." Anastasia says. "You'll be done before we make port in Japan."

Kim nods. "Of course we will. I'm here."

>>
Anastasia lets the comment pass without comment, instead opening the hatch into the hangar bay and leading you through the parked aircraft inside. "Our aircraft are always stored by the forward elevator. The striker racks are there too, since it's easier to move the strikers in the racks up to the flight deck, and then we get in from there."

"Are all of you variable striker operators?" Kim asks.

"We have a pair of variable strikers and a pair of Wyvern superstrikers." Anastasia asks. "We're supposed to get another pair of variables as soon as they become available, but the fleet's still trying to get spellcaster completely refit with them."

"Where is spellcaster, anyway?" Kim asks.

"Aboard the Lincoln, last we heard." Anastasia responds. "Mom keeps track of them. The Abe's in the south china sea, but they're scheduled to come north into the sea of Japan about the same time we're supposed to get there."

"And they're still composite." You say.

Anastasia nods. "Of course they are. Pair of Fenrirs, six witches. Overstrength, but they've been the flagship composite squadron since the war." She says with a shrug. "Which is why there's two of our sisters there."

"Which two?"

"Cassie and Jen."

"Snakes." You state. Anastasia laughs.

"Two of them, anyway. We're just lucky it's not all five. The other three are either in the Atlantic or posted stateside."

"At least there's that."

Anastasia laughs again. "They're not so bad."

You shrug- they're not, not really, and Cassie and you actually get along pretty well, but... the snakes, as everyone seems to call them, are still all kinds of trouble, most of the time. Cassie is probably the least troublesome of the lot, as shy as she is, but she still manages to be dangerous enough to need to be watched.

"Is that it?" Kim asks, interrupting your thoughts as she points at your Fenrir, it's stock navy grey paint unbroken by anything other than the usual markings- there's no squadron emblem on the tailplanes, no nose art, no nothing.

"That's it." You affirm, noting that the other Fenrir is parked nearby, though it appears, for the time, at least, to be secured and quiet- no one working on or in it, right now.

Kim nods and looks up at the ladder then over at you. "We need to get our stuff if we want to start." She points out. "Helmet, at least, and I have to have my flight suit." She says. "You don't have to get your actual flight suit on if you don't want."

You shrug. "It doesn't matter."

She nods. "Ok, can you help me up?"

"Anything I can do?" Anastasia asks.

[] Have her go get the crew chief before you start- you'd rather introduce yourself now that just get to work without him.
[] Have her see if she can find Billy- you'd like to meet your element lead and see if he has any advice.

So, I was never entirely clear on the role of the Fenrir. The Wyvern is air superiority, and the Raven (the XFA?) are multirole with an air superiority bent. What role does that leave that's not a bomber?

[x] Have her go get the crew chief before you start- you'd rather introduce yourself now that just get to work without him.

You nod. "Yeah, go see if you can scare up our crew chief, please." You say. "And where's the life support shop?"

"I'll have someone bring your gear up for you." Ana responds. "I don't want you getting caught down there if you're sending me to get the chief. You just hang tight here."

You nod as she walks off, while Kim climbs up the ladder extending down from the cockpit of the Fenrir and looks down in your ;office'. "It seems kind of empty in there." She says.

You shrug. "It's designed to be operated by VDNI. No need for all the displays." You point out. The canopy similar- With VDNI, there's almost no need for a traditional glass canopy, and the Fenrir's is an armored plate with further sensors embedded in it. Once you're plugged in, of course, that's entirely a non-issue, but it can be a bit claustrophobic when you're not.

She nods, happy enough with the explanation, and walks back along the wing root over the canards and back towards the armored plug hatch covering the System Operator's station, behind the cockpit.

"It's dark in there." She says, looking down, sounding kind of apprehensive.

"It's not so bad once the ship's powered up." A feminine voice says as it's owner, a dark-skinned woman with black hair says, walks around the nosegear of your fenrir. "Lieutenant Senior Grade Una Smith." She says, smiling at you.

You nod. "Lieutenant Junior grade Morgan Laroux-Bishop." you respond. Her smile gets wider.

"So Maman and Bishop did- " She laughs a bit. "I'm sorry," She says, catching herself. "I shouldn't laugh. How is your mother?"

"She's well." You respond, trying to place the woman, who can't be much older than you.

She grins again, reading it in your eyes. "You don't remember me, do you?"

[x] Give me a second, I'm sure I'll remember.

You try to place her- not that her appearance makes it easy. Her hair is dyed a shade of purple, at least, the hair you can see, and her face isn't one you can place- though her violet eyes would, in theory, be a pretty distinctive feature.

Would be, you think, if they weren't so damn common among witches- Liz's are the same color.

"Oh, take your time." She says, smiling. "Give you a hint, we were in Virginia."

You frown at that- you weren't in Virginia very long at all, just a year, maybe even less than that.

You try to place the woman, and eventually shake your head. "Virginia?"

"We went to school together in second grade." She says, grinning. "My mom was on your mom's team."

You nod- it's slowly coming back. "Yeah, I think I do remember now. You sat behind me?"

She laughs again. "Yeah. Even got babysat with you a couple times, before your mom just started sending you to stay with your dad when she went downrange."

You nod again. "Yeah, Yeah, I remember that. How have you been?"

She laughs. "I've been fine. My husband ought to be along pretty shortly-"

"Husband?" Kim asks, dropping off the last few rungs of the ladder and walking over to stand next to you.

Una nods, holding up her left hand, showing off the simple gold band around the ring finger there. "Husband. Will was off getting us food when I saw you walking around on this jet."

"It's our jet." Kim responds, somewhat defensively.

"I figured as much." Una's smile is almost instantly gone. "So you're the replacements."

You nod.

She shakes her head. "Shame it had to happen like this. Look, shit's gonna be rough for a while, I won't lie. You got lucky that me and Garcia didn't always get along, and his SO was a bitch. Will kinda felt the same way- we were looking at a transfer out before the accident."

"That bad?" Kim asks.

Una nods. "Yeah. All the other girls loved the guy, but he was scum the provost wouldn't touch the asshole, and never bothered looking at the evidence, but this ain't the place. Get at me later and I'll tell ya about it." She says, looking just past you. "Hey Chief!"

You turn to see a solidly built older man with a pair of round glasses on his face and a crew cut walking across the hangar deck. "Afternoon, Lieutenant." He says levelly. "How's the queen doing?"

Una laughs. "Just fine after we did that hardware swap. You were right, my bad."

He grins. "Told you." He turns to look at you, regarding you flatly. "Lieutenant." he says, nodding. "Lieutenant Bishop said you were looking to start your integration workup?"

[x] We were hoping to meet you first, Chief.

"We were hoping to get to meet you first, Chief." You respond, offering a handshake that he accepts immediately. "I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade Morgan Laroux-Bishop"

"You're Frank Bishop's boy?" The man asks, his eyes narrowing. You nod.

"I am."

He grins. "Well ain't that something. I worked on your old man's bird during the war." He says, nodding. "Well, when he was at castle Barin, in England. Good post, that was."

"You were a wyvern maintainer?" You ask, and he nods. "Worked on the Wyvern-Merlin herself. Crossed over onto Fenrirs about fifteen years ago, right when they hit fleet service. Been on them ever since, first with VF3 then with VF7."

You nod- that's good to hear. Experience counts for a lot, especially on an aircraft like the Fenrir, which is bleeding edge enough that there's more than a few aerospace doctorates involved in it's maintenance.

"So your computer isn't even activated yet, huh?" He asks.

You shake your head. "Boeing said it couldn't be activated without a SO here anyway." You respond.

"But I'm here now." Kim adds. "Ensign Kimberly Wells."

"As in-"

"Samantha Wells is my mom." Kim says with a nod.

The chief smiles at that. "Your mom was a real pleasure to work with." He says. "It was my privilege to do so. How's she doing now?"

Kim shrugs. "I'm not sure. I didn't get a chance to see her before I left for the ship from the academy." She responds. "She said she might visit, if she gets the chance."

"I hope she does." The chief responds.

There's a moment of silence, Then the chief looks at the Fenrir. "So, you ready to get started? Where's your equipment?"

"Here, Chief." Anastasia says, walking across the deck to hand you your flight bag and Kim hers. "I went to go get it myself. Hey Una."
>>
The other witch nods at your sister. "Hey Ana. You gonna help?"

Anastasia shrugs. "Kat didn't have anything else for me to do, so I might as well."

Una grins. "Do you know how to help?"

"Just tell me what to do."

"Well, first, find someplace for Ensign Wells to change." The Chief directs her, before looking at you. "You want to go ahead and go plug in? Get her rigged to run from APU, we'll bring one up and get it set up while you do."

You nod. "Can do."

Crawling back up into the cockpit takes a second, though climbing in is plenty easy- there's almost no controls inside, just a backup throttle and stick with a single MFD set in the center of the otherwise fairly plain console in front of you. You situate yourself before putting on your flight helmet and leaning back in the ejection seat, reaching back for the cable leads and plugging them into the up link on the rear of your helmet. That done, you reach forward, flipping off the safety cover to the VDNI toggle and set it to on.

There's the split second flash of disorientation that disappears before darkness overwhelms you. You fight back the momentary panic- it's a known phenomenon, and one you've encountered before. Without the combat computer on, and with the sensors cold, the aircraft- and you- are blind.

"Hang on, LT. The ensign is still changing, so we can't get you powered up just yet." The chief says, his voice seemingly coming from right next to you. "Once she gets changed and plugged in, what do you want to work on getting up to speed first?"

[x] Sensors

"Let's get the sensor suite up and running first." You say, blinking a couple times to try and get your eyes to start seeing again and your vision starts to return as you concentrate on it, though it's still incredibly blurry and out of focus.

"Ok, Eltee, Ensign Wells is on her way up. Give her a minute or two to get plugged in and we can get this started." The Chief says as you do. "once she's up there we can get to work getting the sensor suite up and running. We'll keep everything on min power since we're on an auxiliary feed, and without the computer up we'll be running it from the portable station out here." He says.

"I'm in." Kim says, a minute later. You can feel her presence in the system, though it's indistinct and kind of distant, like she's through a heavy fog from you. Still, her voice comes across loud and clear, like she's sitting right there in the ejection seat with you.

"Ok, go ahead and get your interface lit up." the Chief instructs her. "We'll run through the most pain in the ass systems first, then work down to the basics. Lieutenant Bishop, you good up front?"

"Yeah." You respond- everything considered, you're fine, even if you can't see anything.

"Alright, we're going to go ahead and start in with the first tier systems." He says. "If anything faults, let's set it aside and come back to it. Ok, whenever you're ready, ensign."

"Are you ready Morgan?" Kim asks, sounding excited.

"Go for it." You respond.

Kim's not gentle by any stretch of the imagination- she lights everything in the highest tier of sensor systems, the advanced stuff not on any other aircraft, and a flood of information slams into your mind, giving you an instant blinding headache.

"Sorry" She says at your grunt. "I'm going to start trimming down the data inflow to just what you'll need for combat. Mass, Heat, EM Radation. The usual stuff."

"Hey chief?"

"Yeah El tee?"

"Tell my sister I know how much she weighs within the micro gram." You say, grinning slightly to yourself- the mass sensors on the fenrir were originally designed for UNEDF applications, but since the defunding of the arm, they've been showing up in many militaries around the globe.

"I'm not that stupid, Eltee." The chief laughs. "You can tell her yourself when you get down outta there."

Thanks for running Ghost. Slow burn format works much better someone from a Euro timezone like me. I don't have to stay up until early morning to vote and participate in the discussion now. So if it's fine with you, please continue running the quest like this.

Great run Ghost. I like the slow burn set up. Gives me something to look forward to everyday. We gonna have a new thread today or next Saturday?

I'm thinking of starting the next run today, but I have a lot to do, so it may start Monday.
