[Welcome to Earth Bet, where physical and/or emotional trauma can give you superpowers, Kaiju occasionally rampage, and everything that can go wrong, will.]

In hindsight, wandering aimlessly when you don’t know the city was a bad idea.

You are Michael Simpson Jr. and you are getting mugged. The tip of the knife wavers slightly but stays pointed at you as the apparent druggie speaks.
“I won’t say it again, kid - gimme your wallet, phone, all that shit, or I’ll take ‘em myself.”

You barely understand him through the tension. You feel the pressure building up and you know you have to take action.

No, you refuse to lie down and take this. You are a man! And you know just how to prove your manly toughness to this asshole. You maintain eye contact as your hands reach towards your waist. His grin widens, then drops at the same moment as your pants when he realizes you are not in fact going for your pockets.

As you focus your glare, you feel the slightest ache - as if stretching a muscle unused to working. A voice in the back of your head starts a tally.

One.
Two.

The mugger’s eyes flick from yours, down, back up, then to your left and right. “O-ok now, I didn’t mean it.” He slowly starts backing up.

As he steps back, you keep pace until his back hits the brick wall, all the while his eyes dart wildly (four). With your pants around your ankles, you continue shuffling and staring and the numbers in your mind keep rising (six). Eventually you stop right in front of your would-be assailant. (seven). Staring deeply into his eyes you see the moment fear turns to desperation.

He lunges to the side, knife out. “Fuck this, keep your money, freak!” You hear a string of expletives and scrambling footsteps as he sprints away down the alley. When you turn to watch him run, you notice for the first time you are not alone.

Arrayed in a half circle around you are several naked teenagers, all identical, staring at the rapidly fleeing mugger. As he slips out of sight, they turn towards you, faces blank. You stare at them, they stare back, and you quickly realize why they look familiar. They all look exactly like you.

Your doppelgangers continue to loiter around the alleyway as you pull up your pants. They turn to you as one when your phone dings.

>Dad: Dinner in 45 mins, come home soon. Love, Dad

You should probably head home soon if you want to make it in time, but you have to do something about the mass of naked teenagers surrounding you.

After a quick “be back soon” to dad, you turn your attention to the clones. You aren’t entirely sure how you got them to appear, nor how to get rid of them, but you have to try.

Maybe if you want them to disappear hard enough, they’ll get the message? You stare at the nearest one wishing they would go away. Nothing seems to change after the first minute, so you think at it harder.

Frustrated by your lack of knowledge with your own new superpower, you step close to your twin. “Why won’t you go away?” you grumble at it, trying to will it away through sheer force of will. At this, it’s uncaring expression (do you really look like that when you’re bored?) gains focus and it reaches out to touch your arm. Upon contact, it begins fading away until it dissipates entirely. Huh.

Moving to the next one, you try placing your hand on its shoulder. When that does nothing except focus its eyes on you, you try willing it away again. That seems to do the trick, as it starts fading out of existence as well. You quickly vanish the rest, noting that one of them had a shallow cut where the mugger hit him as he passed.

With that out of the way, you quickly walk home. Letting your dad know you’re back, you head to your room and lock the door. You have around 20 minutes until dinner is ready.

Try to summon a single clone, with clothes if possible.

Alright, you have superpowers, the first thing to do is figure out how they work. You take a deep breath and think back to what happened the when you were getting mugged. Flexing the phantom limb in the back of your mind is easy now that you think to look for it. You let out the breath you were holding and open your eyes. Standing in the middle of your room is another naked you.

[1 clone active]

“Yo.” Your clone says, giving a little wave. “The fact that I’m naked is weird, right? I - you I guess - tried to make one with clothes. I’m gonna put something on. Am I stealing this, or since I’m you does it not count? This brings up so many questions.”

You weren’t aware that they could talk. “Why couldn’t they talk before?” The sound comes in stereo and you realize you and the double asked each other at the same moment. Damn, this is freaky.

Finished pulling on some clothes, your clone turns to you. “So, now what? Two heads are better than one, right? Does that still work when they’re the same head?” You still have some time before dad calls you down for dinner.

>Keep experimenting
>Talk to your clone
>>
>>2195998
>>Keep experimenting
Man, this really is freaky
>>
>>2195998
>>Keep experimenting
Get rid of him then bring the clone back. Do the clothes go with him and come back as well? Or do they just fall to the floor? Is the clone that reappears the same as the one before? Establish a code word to check this.
>>
If these are just baseline clones of us that can think for themselves, that has potential while not being overpowered. In other words, it'll be a lot of fun to make work well when fighting against capes that shoot fireballs or can tank a tank shell.
>>
>>2196013
>>2196015
You wonder what will happen if you get rid of your clone then bring him back. Will it be the same one? Will he remember things? At the very least can he take the clothes with him? To test it, you tell your clone the first word to pop into your head, have him memorize it and then dispel him with a thought and a touch. As he disappears the clothes he was wearing flutter to the ground. At least that’s one question taken care of.

Excited at the possibility of learning more, you quickly summon another clone. This one is naked as well and when you ask for the code word you gave him he tells it to you, but says he only knows it because he remembers you telling it to his predecessor. Shoot.

Rummaging through your mind for another way to check if it’s the same clone, you make a mark on his arm with a pen from your desk, dismiss him and summon another, sans mark. It seems that each copy is distinct from the others, and each one has the memories you did at the moment of making them.

Before you can think of anything else to try, you are distracted by the call of a home cooked meal. Dinner is a mostly silent affair, since you are distracted by thoughts about your new powers; your older sister rarely looks up from her phone, and your dad struggles to involve you both in a conversation. While clearing the table, your dad catches your attention, “I know you weren’t too happy about the move, son, but please know that it was for the best.” With that he gives you a side hug, an “I love you,” and lets you leave.

You don’t have anywhere to be tomorrow while your dad works and your sister goes to her summer SAT prep classes, so you have all day to try things out with your powers.

>Last post of the night, leave ideas you want to try and questions you have about anything, I’ll check back in the morning
>Questing should resume tomorrow around the same time or a bit later
>>
>>2196181
How old are we? We have an older sister doing SAT prep, so we're probably no higher than 10th grade.
I want to ask about our economic status, but that might be tied to why we moved and I'm unsure if you'd want to answer that.
Mom isn't with us? I'm assuming dead or divorced, though that's probably plot relevant.
Things seem strained between our family, I kind of regret not going down to talk with dad. The move to Florida seems like its a factor if what dad said was anything to go by, but does mom not being around also have something to do with it?
And wow, every time we summon a clone he's naked, that's gonna be annoying. If we end up joining the Wards, it's gonna be weird to have 8 brothers patrol with seemingly no powers. Not that I expect that kind of misunderstanding to occur, but it's funny to imagine the general public thinking that.
So our clones are a new iterative every time, but still remember what the last clone does. That's... well, let's just say it's probably a good thing we don't seem overly philosophical. That is just an existential crisis waiting to happen.
Our power is decent, though only on a street level power scale. Presumably getting fit also effects the clones. We're basically a knock-off naruto with his shadow clones, though probably not as over powered. I wonder what happens when one of our clones is killed.
>>
>>2196214
None of that information is particularly secret, I just prefer to weave it in organically unless someone specifically asks.

>How old are we?
You are 15, your sister is 17.
>economic status
Like most teenagers, you aren't super aware of how much your parents make, but you've never been poor.
>Mom isn't with us?
Divorced about 7 years now. She initiated it.
>Things seem strained between our family
Most kids, let alone teenagers, like having to move and leave behind their friends. Your dad got offered a much better job.
>does mom not being around also have something to do with it?
For you, not so much. Dad probably has a lot of thoughts about that if you can get him to talk about his feelings.

Feel free to post experiments you want to try with your powers. I'll be back periodically throughout the day.
>>
Is there a distance or time limit on clones? I'd leave one summoned all day, maybe have one sit in our room when we go for a walk/take a bus across the city to test range.
Do they have insides the same as us/bleed the same? Just try to remember if the one who was cut last night bled normally. Maybe find a stethoscope and listen for heart/lungs/gut sounds
Related, how durable are they? does falling/getting hit poof them?
If they have the same memories, is it any better than ours? Like can they recall perfectly stuff that's happened in our life or is their memory foggy on the same stuff ours is? just ask them about that one, easy enough.
They...they don't feel bad about getting poofed, do they?
>>
>>2196181
>>2196420

Can we vary our clones? Like one that is...shit. Bigger and a bit physically stronger. Or one that is a whiz/smart brain. You know?
>>
Only idea i have is seeing if we can choose where they pop up.
We could pop one behind or on top of an opponent
>>
I wanna see if we can create a clone with clothes if we focus on that. Otherwise hitting the streets is gonna be awkward if we don't prepare beforehand. Not to mention if we need to create more mid-fight.
>>
You wake up feeling refreshed and full of ideas. After a quick breakfast and shower you have the house to yourself, and you waste no time creating a clone in your room. Unfortunately, this one is as naked as the others before him, but he shares your eagerness to discover his limits and yours. You spend a while asking questions to determine the accuracy of his memories. Names of family and old friends comes as easily to your clone as you, and you progress to things you aren’t even sure you remember. Former classmates you never spoke to, characters from old, half-remembered TV shows, and things that happened years ago are hazy for the both of you, though talking about them out loud does jog a few memories.

Satisfied with that, your thoughts turn towards your clones’ physical capabilities and your ability to make them. Can you make them differently or control their position as they appear? Since you started experimenting with your powers, they’ve all appeared in your center vision, but you recall that in the alleyway they appeared beside you. After several trying several varying positions and appearances, you’ve determined that while you can control where they show up, their physical form remains the same. You do notice, however, that with each copy you make, their expressions become a bit more vacant. You turn back to the first clone you made today to see he shares the same unfocused gaze.

You snap your fingers in front of his face to regain his attention. When asked what’s happening, he shrugs half-heartedly and mumbles inaudibly. Curious, you call one of the others over to you and dismiss them, and the uptick in awareness of the others is immediate. You slowly dismiss more clones until the remaining are coherent, though slow to speak, leaving 3. They slowly explain that each time you made another, the further apart their thoughts. “Right now,” one of them says, “I feel the same as if I stayed up all night. Not the tired part, but like I can’t think more than one step at a time.”

>>2199252
While this new insight demands more consideration, you also need to know how well your clones will fare in a fight with other parahumans. You know that yesterday, one clone got a shallow cut without dispelling, but you need to know the upper limit. Dismissing all but one so you can get a clearer answer, you ask the remaining clone if he knows how long he can last or how much damage he can take. “I’m as clueless as you on this one, boss. I feel like a whole person, I have a heartbeat and everything.” He pauses. “I just realized that I’m ok with dying if you ask me to. Maybe it’s because I know I’m not real, but I don’t fear death. Is that normal?”

The idea catches you off guard. You don’t care about his well being. You feel like you should, decent human being that you are, but you can’t summon up the goodwill to do it. Have you always been like this? No, you still care about the safety of your family and friends, as well as your own. Is this part of your power? You distantly recall hearing that powers limit themselves to protect their users, like pyrokinetics being immune to their own flames, is this an extension the the same effect?
>>
>>2199256
You have a lot to think about and a few more things you want to test. Knowing if there’s a constraint on time or distance sounds helpful. You can’t make the day go by faster, but since it’s around midday, you decide to leave a clone at home while you go out for lunch. You tell your clone to look in on the local cape scene while you’re out and act normal if your dad or sister come home unexpectedly. With that, you’re out the door to the nearest bus stop.
