You are Elise Korsch, a Corporal in the Imperial 107'th Air Mage Platoon, and an avid Patriot. Currently, you find yourself in the midst of an operation to take the village of Langemark, which had initially begun with overwhelming success. All mission parameters were being fulfilled as directed, but you noticed the ease at which Imperial forces broke through the Republican positions and the distinct lack of mages on the side of the opposition. As the village defenders were on their last legs, the Republican artillery bombarded their own positions to inflict heavy losses on the Imperial forces. From this sudden bombardment sprang forth the Republican mages, which had utilized the catacombs underneath the battlefield to attack from behind the Imperial forces. You now find yourself engaged with Republican mages alone.

Now:

The face the Republican squadron and aim down your sights with a steely determination. While some might utter a battle-cry, you energy is focused into one thing, and that's killing your foe. You fire off a shot and it bounces off the shield of the enemy mage, but it flickers and you overwhelm it with another round. The round pierces the shield and pierces the chest of the Mage. He falls from the sky.

"One." You count. It was traditional to keep track of how many Mages you bagged in the field, akin to how pilots did as well. The Squad that was charging you splits into duo's with their first casualty sustained and tries to flank you on both sides.

>Fight the Mages alone.
>Radio the other Snipers for support. They're currently attempting to prevent the Republicans from reclaiming their Anti-Air Batteries, but may be able to spare some support.
>Radio the Platoon for support. They're currently engaged with the Republican Platoons, but some might break off to assist if allowed.
>Fall back to the Platoons position. You could engage in close-range combat and would stand out less in the mass of mages.
>Fall back and order the Imperial Soldiers to assist with the captured Air-Batteries. That would require men be diverted from holding back the Republican assault on the rear.

That'd probably of been a good idea. Think I'll do that.
Snipers were high valued targets on the battlefield, and so you figured it would be best to regroup with the main body of the Platoon. They'd have their hands full with engaging the Republican mages as well, but you'd stand out less and there'd be less of a chance of more enemy mages breaking off to take you out.

You fly as fast as you can toward the Platoon which had already taken formation and engaged in combat. Your approach towards your Platoon also offered the possibility of attacking a few of the squads while you withdrew from your current position. Taking this chance you fired a few rounds at some of them. Most did not achieve any kills, but any Republicans who hastily paused to look for you or attempted to break off found themselves dispatched by other members of your Platoon. That numbered at least two indirect kills.

With yourself now nearing the heat of the main air-battle, you have to think about how you'll proceed now.

>Tag along with another Imperial Squad.
>Engage in melee with any lone Republican Mages.
>Use the chaos of battle to mask your shots. Stay on the constant move.
>Take up position in the town below and support from there.

With that enemy squadron from before hot on your tail, you elect that it would be best to keep moving amid the chaos of the battle. Flying and maneuvering through the explosions is dangerous business, but it's just what you need to fire off your shots while trying to lose your enemy. The Republicans that were chasing you seem hesitant to pursue you into the mass of shooting and explosions, and it's just the pause you need to fire off some more shots. You raise your rifle and fire.

>Roll 4d20. Due to your decision to try and lose them in the midst of the battle, they won't retaliate for at least this one turn, and all subsequent they'll roll to locate you. However due to the environment and your constant movement, the DC is a bit higher at 15. First 3 rolls and then the one with the highest result will be taken into account.

The majority of your shots hit their mark, and within seconds a trio of corpses begin to fall from the sky. The fourth mage in the squad that attacked you dashes away, likely panicked with the loss of his comrades. You're well versed in keeping an eye on your mark however, and he won't be getting away that easily. He appears to be frantically searching for you with how much he looks back. No surprise there really, as he probably is prepping for a bullet in his back.

The Republican Mage is getting further away, but unfortunately for him, you have no intention of letting him get away. You maneuver and continue to dodge explosions from the combat surrounding you, all the while trying to line up a shot on the fleeing mage. He swerves slightly, likely trying to prevent you from too easily landing a solid shot.

>Roll 2d20, with the first roll to get a shot on the fleeing mage. First three rolls will be taken into account with the highest being selected. DC is 16.
>Second roll has a DC of 15, but lets say you don't want this one to succeed. I'll take the lowest roll into account.

Nice.

You aim true and empower your shot with mana from your Operation Orb. Your rifle glows a deep red and once you're sure your shot is guaranteed to hit, you fire. What you hadn't expected was that as soon as you squeezed the trigger, an enemy Mage would pass in front of your shot. The bullet ripped through his throat, but empowered by your mana it maintained enough momentum to carry itself to your original target. The shot hit lower than originally intended, and instead of hitting the mage it impacted with his flight gear, which then promptly exploded. You stared in awe. Did you just bag two for one? That was...unexpected but not unwelcome. Surely a nice story to tell later.

You hear a battle cry from behind you as a Republican Mage charges you with his bayonet ready. You manage to dodge out of the way in time however and before he can turn to fire, you lodge a bullet in his skull. He falls from the sky.

With the squad that was pursuing you out of the way, you have an opportunity to support either the Infantry or your platoon at your discretion. The Trench secured from earlier was under assault from Republican infantry that had emerged from the catacombs, and if it was to fall they would reclaim their artillery and Anti-Air batteries. What's worse is that you could find yourself and the town surrounded and cut off. You'd likely need to prepare a swift defense.

Your Platoon was still outnumbered however, and any and all assistance could possibly effect the tide of battle. Should your Platoon be defeated, you'd likely lose the town as well without Mages to support the Infantry.

>Defend the Rear Trench where the Republican emplacements were located.
>Support your Platoon. They could still be victorious without help, but will likely suffer more casualties.
>Suggest a 'Tactical Withdrawal'. Suggest the town be abandoned in favor of another assault later. No guarantee's anyone will listen.

If we support the infantry, that should clear up more men to assist in the defense of the trench.

It'd be better to risk encirclement than to lose the town after all we did. Besides, the infantry could possibly reclaim that rear trench later even if it did fall

Freeing up our platoon allows for more Mages on our side to help later, at the cost of earlier action. It's a trade off I'm willing to gamble on.

After weighing your options, you decide it'd be better to risk encirclement than to forfeit the town to these Republican dogs. You stay on the move and look around on how to best contribute to the air battle.

Also, roll 2d100. First roll for the severity of Imperial Casualties up until now and Second for the Republic. Because we've gone out of our way to preserve the strength of the Platoon, lowest roll will be selected for the Empire and Highest for the Republic.

Despite being outnumbered, the Empire wasn't the leading contender in Mage technology and warfare for no reason. The Imperial Mages bagged two Republican Mages for every one of their own lost. At the current pace, the only way the Republicans could secure an Imperial route would be overwhelming numbers. Mage technology wasn't just something to throw away in pointless assaults however, and if you could inflict enough losses on the Republicans, they would likely withdraw.

As a squadron flew by you, avoiding the rounds fired by a nearby Republican group, you flew by with the intention of adding yourself to their formation.

"Corporal Korsch, I hadn't expected a Sniper to get up close and personal with the rest of us!" You hadn't really seen 'who' you were joining though, and it was only now you'd realized you joined up with Corporal's Laufer, Otto, and Schultz. They were led by Sergeant Schwarzer. He hardly seemed worried by the fact that he's on the run and trying to avoid being blown out of the sky. Oddly enough, he seemed to be enjoying it. Corporal Otto remained as impassive as ever, and Corporal Schultz seemed much more panicked than his comrades. You looked over to Corporal Laufer who had shouted out to you.

>"I hadn't expected you to still be alive!"
>"Less talking, more shooting!"
>"I do my duty like the rest of you!"
>Remain Silent. Focus on the battle.

"Less talking, more shooting!" You yell at corporal Laufer. He barks out a laugh. He swerves downward, and allows one of the pursuing Republican mages to fly over him. Laufer turns abruptly, and fires and artillery spell at close range. The enemy mage explodes in a fiery combustion.

"Just like that?!" He jokes. A bit overkill for close quarters combat by some standards, but as long as the Fatherland was victorious, it didn't really matter how flashy he was trying to be with his kills. The ever calm Corporal Otto spoke up at this point.

"Now if only he could actually make his shots when he wasn't trying to impress!" Ouch. Corporal Laufer put a hand over his heart in mock hurt.

"You wound me Otto! I assured you those were warm up shots!" Corporal Otto didn't reply, instead focused on avoiding the hail of gunfire coming his way.

How do you assist Corporal Otto?

Had a much longer response typed up but I lost it right before posting. >.> Enjoy this quicky.

You aim your rifle, prepared to fire in the Mages's back as Corporal Otto raises his mana shield to protect himself from the enemy's rounds. You're pleasantly surprised however, when Corporal Shultz flies by and cracks the Mage across the face with his rifle akin to a baseball bat. It stuns the mage and halts his barrage of gunfire. You waste no time in firing and hit the mage in his lower back. He falls off his Flight gear and topples to the Earth below. Corporal Otto gives you nod. You suppose that's one way of indicating he approves.

"I suppose you owe me one no?!" Corporal Shultz shouts in a Republican accent. You're surprised for a second. Perhaps he's from Elsaß-Lothringen?

It isn't long after that last kill before the Republicans withdraw to the rear Trench, intent on defending the emplacements they reclaimed while you were focused on fighting with your Platoon. As the combat dies down, the Sergeants order their squads to regroup at the village. With combat coming to a close for now, you regroup along with the rest of the Platoon.
