It's been almost two years since the outbreak of 'The War' between the Francois Republic, Legadonia Entente, and The Empire. Now at age 17, you find yourself engulfed in this conflict as well. The immense loss of life has taken it's toll on all participants. New inventions and Magic decimate battlefields, with some only being on the front for mere hours. That leaves you however. Why were you here?

You grew up in:

>The Empire. Deus lo Vult.
>The Legadonia Entente (Federation). Beware the Northmen's fury.
>The Francois Republic. Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

And your loyalty currently lies with:

You are Elise Korsch, a proud Imperial citizen. Like all daughters of the Empire, it was expected you would contribute to the war effort when the Fatherland called upon you. Most women of the Empire were seen in more supportive roles back at home, but a substantial amount also volunteered for military service. The reasons many had, varied, but in the end you would all be fighting for your very lives regardless of the reasons.

Now here you were on the Rhine Front. As morning began to break across the horizon and the artillery resumed, you could think only of your reasons for being out in this wasteland of carnage.

Won't say any one type of romance is really 'prohibited'. If the majority of people wish to pursue romance with certain characters I won't deny it. That's not to say certain characters won't reciprocate differently.

You've had the superiority of the Empire ingrained into you at a young age, and you've always held true to the idea that the Empire would eventually become the masters of this Continent.

"These Republican dogs are simply stepping stones on the Empire's destiny." You mutter just loud enough for the soldiers around you to hear. You gain a look of approval from just about all of them. Sometimes a little bit of patriotism could do well to remind those around you that they were fighting for something greater than themselves.

As the shells begin to pound the battlefield once more, you stare down below with pity at the men in the trenches. Your brothers of the Empire are made to suffer, but you know that Imperial Destiny cannot be achieved without sacrifice. You only wish the cost wasn't so high. With the universal alert to resume fighting, you stand ready to receive orders alongside other members of your Platoon. Just about everyone in your Platoon was in formation and awaited on the orders of your Platoon Leader, First Lieutenant Egon Schutte. You look around to make sure your comrades are all accounted for as well. Luckily everyone was here. You'd hate to be punished due to someone missing morning muster. You don't have to wait much longer as the First Lieutenant finally appears from his tent. He's a man in his late twenties with short black hair, a single eye that's Blue and an eyepatch over the other. He keeps an Imperial Officer's sword at his side at all times with his hands rested on the hilt. He looks over the group solemnly before he begins to address the Platoon.

"Our orders are in." He began. You awaited eagerly for him to continue.

"We will advance to Langemark and assist in expelling the Republican forces from the Village. We will provide Air Support to our advancing infantry as they move to secur the enemy trenches. With ourselves and our field artillery providing support, it is ideal that as many men make it across the killing field as possible." The Lieutenant announced. Support? What of the enemy Mages and Surface-to-Air artillery? You suppose you would find out soon enough.

"We will be departing in fifteen minutes. Make sure you're prepared." The Lieutenant announced. His expression was still grim, as though he was aware of the dangers ahead of us. You shake your head, still off put by the Lieutenants lack of fervor in destroying the enemies of the Fatherland. This was a chance to acquire glory. To avenge your fallen brothers. You return to your tent where everyone else is preparing as well. Everyone in the Platoon had a role to fulfill. What was yours?

You grab extra ammunition for your Karabiner 98k service rifle. As a Sniper, you're the only one in the group with this rifle model. It's new and has been manufactured only in limited quantities so far. Word has traveled that Central HQ is thinking of adopting it as the standard service rifle for the Imperial Military as a whole, and though you'll be disappointed you won't be the only one with a special rifle anymore, it'll be a boon to the Fatherland, so you think you can accept it. As your busy putting on your flight gear, you hear voice from behind you.

"Hey, Corporal Korsch!" You turn around only to be face to face with Corporal Laufer. He's flanked on both sides by Corporal's Otto and Shultz.

"Best of luck to you. Don't miss alright? We're counting on you too." You almost frown at that. Was he trying to get at something? He smiles expectantly at you.

>"Then don't get in my way."

"I'll do my utmost for the Fatherland." You reply. Corporal Laufer chuckles in the face of your fierce patriotism.

"I'm sure you will." He tells you and pats you on the shoulder. You're annoyed at his lack of fervor, but you don't push the issue. His actions on the battlefield will speak to his character, and should he die he will of made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of the Fatherland. You decide to finish preparing, and rush out to the formation with a few minutes to spare. Most of everyone is there, and those who aren't arrive within a minute after you do. The Lieutenant stands in front of the formation once more.

"This is the 107'th Air Mage Platoon. Do not fail." He orders sternly. You almost want to gape at the bluntness of it all, and given the solemness from earlier you almost want to attest to this being an imposter. Clearly whatever was weighing on his mind earlier, he's come to terms with it.

"Some, if not most of you will perish. Know that your sacrifice in the face of the Fatherlands enemies is not in vain. We will achieve total victory." He says, but it's so monotone that it is hardly rousing at all. The men and women remain silent. It almost seems as though the Lieutenant is tired. A man who has given this same speech many times before perhaps? It didn't matter. A whistle sounds and the infantry jump over the trench lines while Imperial Artillery sounds loudly across the front. One set fires, followed by another and so forth, in order to achieve a constant bombardment.

"Begin your assault." He commands, and all the mages start to power up their Mk. 13 Operation Orbs. Taking to the sky and with a degree of flexibility as a Sniper, you:

>Stay to the rear with the other snipers. It's standard doctrine and will allow suppression of the Trenches mainly.
>Move forward into range of the enemy Artillery. You'll be able to handle the Anti-Air guns and Field Artillery from this range. If the enemy notices you however they'll likely concentrate on you.
>Stay with the Platoon proper. If the enemy send Mages to engage, you'll be able to pick off a few before you decide to pull back.
>Find debris to take up position in. Should any enemy Artillery Mages notice you, you'll need to escape quickly, and you'll be at risk of small arms fire and Field Artillery.

While most of the Platoons Mages decided to hang back in relative safety to support the assault, you had bigger fish to fry. Whether the enemies forces were bogged down or not mattered little if their artillery was still operational. You moved forward with the Platoon until you had the enemy's emplacements in range. Down below, a wave of Imperial Soldiers was washing over the battlefield, supported by the Bombadiers and Snipers that suppressed a large portion of the enemy's small arms capabilities. All that would be needed was a successful melee on the part of the infantry if the Republican troops didn't withdraw. You raised your rifle and peered down the scope at the enemy positions. The Field Artillery numbered at about 15 pieces, and they were prepared to fire. At the same time, other pieces were directed at the sky, numbering at around seven. These emplacements would likely assault the mages in the air before close to medium range combat began. With proper spotters, they could possibly hit the Snipers in the rear as well.

What do you do?

You decide that the best way to support the offensive would be to make sure your Platoon makes it across the battlefield intact. Aiming down the scope of your rifle, you concentrate on what you want to happen, and your understanding of the magic behind your spell. You fire at the Artillery crews manning the anti-air positions, and on your first shot you hit true. A bullet rips through the Republican soldiers torso and he collapses to the ground. You waste no time in making quick work of the crew before moving onto the next. Others will take their place, but by then your Platoon will be too close for the enemy to effectively counter them with Artillery. You tally at least eleven kills by the time the remaining crews move to take cover. They're aware there's a sniper close enough to fire on the, but they haven't distinguished you from the oncoming Platoon of mages yet. A shame you can't fire an artillery spell to make quick work of the actual emplacements from this range, but you they've been disposed of regardless. You're comrades are more than capable however, as despite the Field Artillery getting a volley off, they won't be anymore as the Platoon makes quick work of the remaining pieces. It seemed the assault was sudden enough that the enemy failed to scramble their own Mages in time. Actually...now that you thought about it the Republican Mages were nowhere in site.

Down below, men are eviscerated by well entrenched machine gun positions, and progress was slow, but the cessation of the enemy Artillery was enough for the charge to continue with renewed strength. With the Anti-Air positions neutralized as well, allied Snipers moved closer to support the infantry and incapacitate the machine-gun positions.

The Infantry suffered heavy casualties in taking the Trench, but you likely prevented the Artillery from inflicting even worse. When you see the Republican flag be replaced with the glorious one of the Empire, you're confident that the men who died here today had not lost their lives in vain. The Republican Artillery would make fine additions to the Empire's arsenal as well.

"We're not through yet." You hear over the radio. It's coming from one of the squad leaders.

"Langemark is the next target. We need to make use of our momentum. Orders from the Lieutenant himself." You aren't sure what to make of that. It might be good to pursue the Republicans and force a complete rout, but if the Infantry didn't hold up you could find all that had been gained, lost in a Republican counter-attack. Perhaps the Infantry should consolidate the ground they gained instead?

>Voice your opinion to the Squad Leader.

You didn't feel the need to needlessly jeopardize yourself or alert the enemy to the oncoming assault. The rest of the surviving Infantry were crouched down in the Trench and awaiting the command to attack. As per doctrine, the Snipers moved forward and your Platoon moved ahead to soften up the enemy for the Infantry. Langemark was in sight from this distance, but the enemies preparations beyond this Trench were a mystery. Still, failure was not an option to you, and you wouldn't bring disgrace onto the glorious Fatherland.

The whistle sounded and the Infantry climbed from the Trench onto the mud of what used to be a plain. It was now stained grey from constant smoke, ash, and rain. As you moved forward, you came to realize something as the Platoon came closer to the town. With the exception of the Republican troops who had withdrawn from the Trench, where was the resistance? The shelling of Artillery? Machine gun fire from buildings? None of that was present. The Republicans wouldn't just cede a town, a stepping stone into Republican territory proper, without heavy resistance. At least you didn't think so. It could be possible that their reserves were tied up in another sector, and the assault today genuinely caught the enemy by surprise.

>Move forward with your Platoon. With no enemy resistance, you should be able to secure the town alongside them.
>Maintain your current distance from the Platoon. It worked in the first assault, it'll work now.
>Fall back where the rest of the Snipers are positioned.

Your eyes glow a crimson red around the edges as you scan the town for indications of enemy fortifications or an ambush in the waiting. Although there were a decent amount of enemy soldiers setting up positions in the Village church and buildings that had been boarded up, you were surprised at how easily the Republican lines broke today. You would attest that the lack of mages on the part of the enemy is what granted such a swift victory. Curious, you close your eyes once more and try to see if they had departed recently. Your eyes glow crimson still, but your worldview has changed. Instead of vivid glowing that would indicate people, it's the lines of color that indicate mana trails. Imperial Orbs often leave red trails, while Republican trails leave blue. Around you, the faint outline of blue takes off in all directions from the ground. From the faint outline, it appears they left in the middle of the night....curious. What's more curious are the blue trails that show as if some mages had returned almost prior to the offensive, but there's no trail of them leaving.

That would mean the other parts of the Sector had likely been reinforced by whatever mages were positioned here prior to the attack.

You place your palm over your Orb and try to get in contact with the squad leaders over Orbal comms.

"Corporal Korsch reporting. The enemy has focused the remainder of their forces towards defending the Church and whatever intact structures remain." You tell them. You continue to look at the Mana trails briefly before continuing.

"It also appears that the enemy withdrew their mages from this sector in the night. There's no evidence that they pulled back their forces, but rather reinforced other parts of the Sector. Over." You finish. The orb cracks to life again and the Squad Leaders acknowledge your findings.

"Very well. Your findings are noted" one of the Sergeants responds. You're not sure what opinions the Sergeants are formulating as to if the enemy has any motives, but you have your own idea. You've come to the conclusion that.

>The enemy is attempting to surround us by luring us to the Village.
>The Republicans were outplayed and broken, and they've lost this village as a result.

You think about the disappearance of the enemy mages and it only makes sense. The Republican mages are surely waiting somewhere to strike, the question is where however? You think about expressing your concerns to the Squad Leaders, but decide against it. You had your orders to support the operation, and such doubts were not your place. Down below, the Imperial Army had entered the town, and despite sporadic resistance in the outskirts, the town begins to fall to your comrades. The church and courtyard are offering greater resistance as the location of the Republicans last stand in the sector, but they'll run out of ammunition or be subdued eventually. The Operation appears to be a resounding success from the looks of it, and you smirk triumphantly over the battlefield. Now you'll simply have to hold the ground gained against Republican counter-attacks in the coming hours.

Did the town just explode?

It hadn't quite exploded per se, but the Artillery barrage that wracked it just now had left what buildings were there even more devastated than they were before. That wasn't possible though, as only spotters or 'observers' had the means of communicating with the forward Batteries. The smoke began to clear, and the casualties sustained were evident. The Republicans had called the shells in on their own position. They'd drawn the Imperial Infantry in the town center and marked the town as the target obviously. You frantically looked around for signs of Republican mages. Luckily they came to you. The ground beneath the battlefield exploded in various spots, and the Republican mages poured out in squads. How the hell? It appeared as though the Church's catacombs stretched much further than your sight had been led to believe. You hadn't detected anyone in the tunnels en route to the battlefield and had solely focused on the Town.

Thankfully your insistence on looking for the Republican mages kept you on your toes, and you weren't phased by their sudden appearance, or the fact there was an enemy squad ranging 5 mages heading towards you! You aim your rifle and prepare to open fire.

>"Finally tired of hiding Republican dogs?!?!" You shout in anger, and with a certain eagerness to fight.
>"More for the slaughter it seems." You utter calmly, albeit devoid of emotion.
>"Death to the invaders!" You shout patriotically, albeit a bit fanatically.
>"Shame it has to end this way for you!" You spout gleefully, albeit a bit sadistically.
