=====

You are Adrian Brown, a twenty five year-old third-year medical student living an otherwise normal American life in search of employment. That was until you woke up inside a derelict and demon-infested hospital with four other victims of short-term memory loss. Together, the five of you managed to somehow survive by negotiating with demons and defeating those that were not so amicable. And upon escaping, the all of you realized that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Task Force 666 a multinational organization dedicated to combating hostile demons and those that would use them for ill intentions. And the hellhole you just went through? That was your ‘job interview’, one that you passed with flying colors. When properly offered employment as an agent among the ranks, you accepted without too much hesitation or second thoughts. Duty to humanity and whatnot.

You are now a Devil Summoner in the service of the Task Force, and the leader of East Coast Operations Division IV Carina Squad. It is your duty to protect mankind from all threats involving the demonic, but how you choose to carry out your orders is entirely up to you. The choices you make shall not only affect those around you, but the fate of the entire world itself.

Recently, your orders have led you to the small town of Lebanon, Kentucky. Hot on the trail of a series of child abductions, your investigations have taken you to the realm of the fairies, a frozen realm of depravity, and a museum chock full of relics from American history. It is there that you met and confronted the true threat, an ancient Ojibwe demon named Baykok. Breaking free from its prison for three centuries, the demon went to terrorize the museum and its employees. And though you were able to complete the mission, a dark cloud hangs over your team with the death of Baykok’s last victim.

On an expedition to a haunted graveyard, you found yourself becoming closer to Fitz, who disclosed her full name in an unexpectedly emotional moment. Why she chose to withhold her name is still a mystery, but to you, it doesn’t matter. No matter what she goes by, either as Sarah or Fitz, she’s still your valued teammate.

Prior to leaving, Queen Titania summoned the team once more. After healing your wounds and invading everyone’s personal space, she ripped the Salamander of Joseph Putnam out of your COMP and proceeded to torture the demon for its crimes against the fey in full view of the others. But as she broke away and whispered into your ear for what you desired, clemency for the demon was on the tip of your tongue…

The helicopter ride back to Central was…tense, to say the least. There wasn’t a single person on the team that wasn’t unnerved by what the Fairy Queen did to Salamander. Even now, miles away and an entire dimension apart from the depraved Titania, the memories of her voice still send a shiver down your spine.

Not that you could’ve hashed out the source of your discomfort with any of others. Beyond mental and emotional fatigue, there was something about the escort that accompanied you that cowed everyone into silence. Men and women in faceless helmets, brandishing assault rifles, combat gauntlets, and everything necessary to fight a war or two.

If anything, you can sense a profound disappointment from the backup that Central sent. But it wasn’t directed to any of you. It might’ve been the fact that Baykok was already dead, and that they wouldn’t have the opportunity to throw down with a new demon.

But, you digress. It seems that for better or worse, and for deeds done in her name, you now have the attention of the Queen of the Fairies. But even a blind man could see that it seems that she’s expecting more out of this…interspecies relationship in the future.

“Fine…” Titania whispered. “The Salamander can go, and make his penance among the Children of Adam. But Adrian…I’m expecting something in return. After all, since you are requesting the fairies to give you their rightful claim to justice, please be sure to give something of equal worth for the next time we meet again…”

…the way she licked those plump and luscious lips, with all the deliberate slowness and sensuality of an inhuman perfection, should not have made such a visceral impact on your person. The fact that you could feel her eyes traveling down your back before settling on your ass didn’t help things either.

Damn you, lizard brain. Damn you to hell.

Upon landing in D.C., a car had been waiting on the tarmac to spirit you to Central. One of the agents informed you that as soon as you checked into the building, you needed to be debriefed about what happened in Kentucky. The agents in the caravan assured you that none of you were in trouble. But the way in how sincere they were in saying that Doctor Capretta's death was "regrettable collateral damage, but an acceptable" didn't sit well a whole lot of people.

Yourself included.

That is how all of you, still dressed in combat fatigues and reeking of the realm of the fey, are presented to whoever’s in charge of debriefing. In a linoleum-white room, completely devoid of any furnishings beyond minimalistic Spartan furniture, you are all to wait. When the higher ups were ready, the agents said, they would call you into the room beyond the double-doors.

You don’t even have too much time to settle and gather your thoughts before they begin the process. One-by-one, they call each one of Squad Carina. Vicky goes first, and the noise she makes when she swallows is audible past the dry hiss of the AC. Following a ten minute wait, Brady gives a nervous wave at his own summons. You might have seen MacKay’s lips moving in a silent prayer, but you don’t need an aid to translate the cuss words that fall from Fitz’s incoherent muttering.

…and then they call you.

The first thing that comes to your mind upon entering is that if they were so sure in not making you feel guilt, they were doing an incredibly shitty job. This isn’t a debriefing room as much as it is something straight out of a Tom Clancy thriller, complete with a one-way mirror and dim lighting. For all you knew, Sam Fischer or Jack Ryan might’ve been conducting the debriefing.

“Please take a seat, Squad Leader Brown.”

Two agents watch as you take a seat at the table. One of them, an olive-skinned man with a slight moustache and goatee, flips through a brown manila folder. He moves to fast for you to make out anything coherent, but you can tell that some of it is your file, from the images that appear from time to time. His partner is an exercise in contrast, sporting a head completely shaved and catching the overhead lighting. A toothpick hangs between his teeth, lolling from one end of his mouth to another.

The olive-skinned man doesn’t look up from his files. His voice catches you off guard, a surprisingly rich baritone. “Do you know why you’re here?”

Play it smooth. “…I’m here to be debriefed. About…Kentucky and Bayakok, yeah?”

“Yes, you very much are.”

“But unlike your friends and partners…” Baldy cuts in, with an equally stoic voice, “While we do want your take on things, we’re gonna start off with something else. Just a few extra questions since you’re the Squad Leader.”

…alright. That sounds reasonable enough.

“Alright, question number one…” Baldy pulls one of the files away from Baritone’s side of the table. He flips it open to a seemingly random page before asking, “Looking back to the climax of your confrontation with Bayakok, was attempting to exorcise the demon from Capretta using Expel magic the best choice you had?”

>“Given with what we had available, it was the best I could do.” [Neutral]

“Given with what we had available,” You mutter, “It was the only option we had that wasn’t going to kill him. Baykok was driven into a corner, but waiting any further would’ve given him time to recover and hurt more people. I made a judgment call, the best I could do with what I had on hand.”

The only response you receive is silence, punctuated by the sound of Baldy scrawling something down on the file. Notes, then, you suppose. Some sort of leadership test?

“Alright, question two…” Baldy continues, squinting at the papers. “During your call back to Central for reinforcements, one of your subordinates acted with…” He pauses, offering you a humorless smile as he tries to find the right word. “…with an unprofessional attitude towards one of our analysts, who was only doing his job of supplying you information.”

Oh fuck. Cool as it was, reality ensues and it turns out that her outburst was gonna come back and bite you in the ass.

Dammit, Fitz.

Baritone makes a small noise in the back of his throat. “As the squad leader, is it not your duty to maintain discipline and order within your team? Freshly christened as you are, rookie tendencies are excusable only insofar to a certain degree. How would you go about correcting the behavior your wayward subordinate to prevent outbursts like this from happening again?”

You offer an equally strained smile. “Understood. I’ll talk to her about it. But if I may, sir…?” At Baritone’s gesture, you continue, “The analyst in question…Goodwin, was it? I’ll be a little frank with you. He was wasting our time when the situation was extremely time sensitive, and every second counted. Unprofessional as it was, my subordinate expedited the process of receiving the relevant information we needed in order to proceed with the mission.”

“For all the good it did,” Baldy snorts.

Before the flash of anger can even completely surge right through you, Baritone raises a hand before you get up from out of your seat. “Enough. That matter is settled. Brown will be speaking with Specialist Fitzgerald in regards to her behavior. The benefit of the doubt lies with him in correcting his subordinate’s ways.”

From the way he says it, it’s not as much a placement of trust as it is an explicit order. You nod, trying not to let the tension in your jaw show. “Yes, sir.”

“Moving along…” The olive-skinned agent makes a few notes with his pen before continuing. “These next questions concern the state of the fairy realm.”

Baldy picks up right after Baritone, slouching even further back in his chair. “The information you’re giving is critical, since you five are the first team to get into the kingdom by their express invitation. Beyond the questions, if you have any information about the fairies you have to share, we’re all ears.”

“But first, the questions.” Baritone pauses, and levels a weighing gaze towards you. “Between accounts, it seems that Queen Titania was drawn the closest to you and Father MacKay, but you even more so than the priest. What do you think made her so drawn to you?”

"I think she eyed everyone up at one point since Oberon is out fighting, away from home, but I got special attention."

Straight faced and dead pan. I forgot what the tipping point was, it's been awhile. It was some kind of write in when she asked a question privately.
>>
>>2151611
>Well I was the protégé of her part tiem master, or at lest she viewed it that way. My helping too secure her realm in order to gain information and goodwill furthered that. Then she tried talking about morals and I held firm to mine. That seemed to incite her and she started making very overt passes at me, to the point of making it very clear her husband was away. She said I would have to give her something of equal worth next time I met her, and then started eyeing my like a centerfold picture. I sincerely hope I never meet her again, for my sake and the sake of the task force.
>>
>>2151643
The tipping point might've been the dinner party. She started feeling you up, waving wine under your nose, and going on to say that the exorcism of Capretta was completely justified, even though it killed him. And she made some off-handed comment about not caring that two security guards got their livers ripped out and eaten.

She seems to have focused on your idealism, dismissing them as naive but not with your conviction. Or rather, maybe the concept of proving your morals wrong and dragging you into her own depravity.

Hoo boy. Now if that isn’t a loaded question…

“She certainly lives up to her legends…” You eventually say, with all the deliberate slowness of someone carefully choosing their words. “In that it’s nearly impossible to discern what her motives are. She truly is, ‘the fairy queen’.”

“But this…attraction?”

“What do you want to hear?” You exhale heavily. “I followed her orders and helped out the denizens of her kingdom. I suppose that won me some points and goodwill in her favor. I think I knew it for awhile, but she’s always had her eye on me.”

Baldy offers another dry smile. “Pretty high opinion of yourself, Brown.”

“Ask anyone else on the team,” You curtly reply. “They’ll tell you the same thing. But what they won’t tell you is the tipping point…at the end of the mission…”

>You gave a quick summary of your first meeting in the Great Tree.
>You give a quick summary of your exchange in the banquet.
>You give a quick summary of what happened to Salamander.

“…and I’ve since lost count of how many times she said that her husband was away, fighting the war in Tanglebriar. Not that I have any intention of accepting an invitation into the bed of a married woman…demon,” You finish bitterly. “And when we took Salamander into protective custody, she said that she wanted something of equal worth when we get back.”

Baritone continues scratching notes into his papers while Baldy maintains a wry expression. “…haven’t you read the first provision of the rules-”

You cut him off before he can snark any further. “I could feel her eyeing me like a centerfold picture, like a prime cut of meat at the butcher. Do you know how it feels to have someone as powerful as the Queen of Fairies focused on you? The same demon who can create a localized nuclear blast and raze a small portion of the forest to the ground?” The same demon staring at your ass and the space between your legs as if she were dying of thirst?”

…okay, wrong choice of words, but they seem to get the point.
Coughing into your hand, you finish, “I sincerely hope I never meet her again. For my sake, my team’s, and for the Task Force itself.”

There’s a long moment of silence as Baritone finishes scratching his notes. The traces of sardonic humor have vanished from Baldy’s face. It seems that he’s taking your words a little more seriously now.

But before they can continue the line of questions, something interrupts them. Both men press their fingers into their ears, listening intently to the garbled voice at the other end of their receiver. They turn towards the direction of the one-way mirror, nod, and then return their attention to you.

“That’s going to be it for the realm of the fairies, Brown,” Baritone says. “Now, with all the questions out of the way, we can now begin the debriefing proper. Start from the beginning…”

Huh? Why the sudden change of tone?

…you know what? The sooner you’re done with it, the better. You’re long since due a shower and the relief of a bed with your name on it. After the clusterfuck that was this mission (“success”, your ass), you definitely deserve it.

“Alright. It all started when we were chased on the highway…”

>>Later
>>Carina Squad Barracks

One debrief later finds you toweling off after that much-needed shower, in the private confines of the squad's barracks. The aftereffects of Titania’s magic still linger in your body, but it’s only a balm for physical aches and pains. Twenty minutes lost underneath the hot water does more for your head than a tablet of advil. Faster, too.

Slipping into sweatpants and a grey Task Force t-shirt, you make your way out of the showers, fully intent on heading straight back into the men’s side with the full intention of getting some sleep. No one gave you any looks on your way to the barrack, but you can already tell that come tomorrow, there's gonna be a lot of people talking. And you're gonna need all the rest you can get.

Intent and reality, however, are two completely different things. Waiting outside in the hallway, and with something clearly on their mind, you nearly run into…

“MacKay?”

The priest manages to dodge at the last second, twisting to the side to avoid running into you in what can only be described as something straight out of a ballet. It is an impressive feat of athletic dexterity. You stare, each of you surprised at the other. MacKay’s faster than he looks, and he didn’t expect you to be up this late. The silence lasts for a few more seconds before the two of you start to laugh at the absurdity of the encounter.

Shaking his head in weary amusement, MacKay offers you a warm smile. “My goodness. That’s certainly enough to get the heart pumping. I don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep for a while, now.”

“Yeah…me neither,” You agree whole-heartedly, clutching at your sides. Wiping at the corner of your eye, you manage to crack a smile of your own. Perhaps you’ll need this a little more than sleep, but only just a little bit. “…but I’ve got a solution to our problem.”

“And what would that be?”

You jerk your head towards the shared common room that the two of you and Brady share. “I’ve got a box of tea sitting in my duffel bag. All natural, no caffeine, and it’ll put its drinkers to sleep within minutes of consumption. I don’t know the equivalent of ‘pouring a cold one’ for tea, but I’ve got plenty of bags to go around.”

He doesn’t even hesitate to give a firm nod. “I would very much appreciate that, thanks.”

The commons the five of you have is only slightly bigger than a living room, and not nearly furnished as lavishly as one either. It has everything you’d need to get started for de-stressing after a mission: sofas, a reclining chair, a wide-screen TV and even a small kitchen. At the moment, none of you have really had the chance to settle down in it, leaving the walls more or less threadbare and devoid of personality. Hopefully that would change in the coming months.

When you’d gone to retrieve the tea from your room, both of you were surprised to not find Brady in his cot. You debated the rationality of calling your friend, but decided to leave it alone. Maybe he’s trying to find his own way to tire himself out.

It doesn’t take too long for the electric stove to get the water boiling. Within a few minutes, you and MacKay are comfortably seated on a leather couch, nursing a mug of warm tea. You jokingly raise your mugs in a toast, muttering something incoherent and cheesy about teamwork before nearly burning your tongue on how damn hot the water is.

>MacKay approves +10

For a moment, the two of you are content to sip your drinks in the relative silence of the night. All that punctuates the air within the room are the sounds of your own breathing, and the dry rattle of the AC. Peaceful by any other means.

(cont.)
>>
But it seems that something is on the priest’s mind. Every so often, his hands will flex and grip the mug a little too tightly, and his eyes stare into empty space in deep thought. At one point, his breathing even became heavier, more melancholic and introspective than usual.

Before you can even work up the courage to ask what’s wrong, MacKay manages to beat you to it. He sets his mug down, exhales deeply, and sinks further into the couch before speaking. “…I hope she didn’t mistreat you too badly.”

“Hmmm?”

He shifts in his seat, facing you directly. “Titania. I wasn’t nearly about to broach the subject with the others around, but…” He shakes his head. “I was not blind to how…discomforted you were whenever you were within an arm’s length of the fairy queen.”

You snort, but there's a warm feeling in your chest that has nothing to do with the tea. Before himself, he's worried about you. “…weren’t we all?”

“I suppose we were,” he agrees with a small smile, “But not nearly as much as I…or you for that matter…” His voice trails off into silence before sighing heavily. “Adrian, the first thing I learned in the seminary was how to read people’s faces. Admittedly, I found more use for this in the confessional and the odd poker night, but even though I couldn’t see what she was doing during the banquet, I could see that you were more than bothered by her advances.”

“Ah, there’s no point in beating around the bush. So I’ll just ask you directly.” He stares at you with the most serious face he could possibly muster. “You’ve been incredibly tense after we left the woods. Did she do anything to you? Say anything awful? In summation…are you alright?”

…ha. What a question. So simple, so straightforward...

“It’s not every day that a demon queen wants my ass…” You mutter, trying not to relish the way MacKay’s jaw visibly drops. “Worst part is that I’m only partially joking since she might want both the front and the back. Because, holy crap, this…fairy queen has some serious issues that go beyond infidelity. MacKay…she tried to get me to fuck her, pardon my French. Questioned and tried to undershoot every single one of my morals to do so.”

The priest grimaces. “I didn’t think…” He shakes his head in disbelief. “To think that she’d be so daring.”

That’s not even the worst part of it. “…the two of us saw what she did to the dryad’s grove,” you mutter. “A single snap of her fingers and…poof.”

He nods. “I strongly believe that grass will not grow there for a very long time, given the scourging power of her magic.”

“The damn bi…broad is screwing with me. With us,” You growl. “She’s playing the coy temptress even though she has more power in her effing pinky than I do in my entire body. What kind of sick pleasure does she get out of this little chase?”

“I cannot claim to speak for the fairy queen,” he muses, “But perhaps this is her way of alleviating boredom. Her husband is away fighting a war, leaving her all alone to her devices. And are you familiar with the aphorism of idle hands?”

“Yeah…’idle hands are the devils’ workshop…” Your head makes an audible noise as you throw it back into the cushion. “…at this point, I think Lucifer might be a kind mercy. At least he won’t proposition me with sex…”

All of the humor suddenly drops from MacKay’s face. The change is instantaneous. The sympathetic, amicable preacher is gone, and in his place, the harbinger of a stern and powerful God levels the coldest look he can muster.

“Do not be so quick to make jokes about the Father of Lies, Adrian,” the priest intones gravely. “If you can recruit the service of an angel, and one of King Solomon’s seventy two demons personally came to do battle with us, then it would certainly not be wise to be so glib about the Devil. Even without the knowledge that the demons we hunt do not follow classical Biblical lore, nothing good ever comes from invoking his name.”

…you have the distinct feeling that his words go beyond just his duties as a priest.
“…p-point taken,” You mutter. “Yeah, you’re right. Sorry about that. Just…if you put it in that perspective…”

“It is a sobering thought to think that instead of being sealed away in Hell, there are Biblical demons that walk among pagan ones as well. Admittedly, it does go against nearly two thousand years of established dogma, but I will not shy away from the reality set before me.”

The duty he speaks of does not need to be elaborated upon. Perhaps this was the calling he found in the Task Force: to not only provide spiritual relief to the agents of the Task Force, but to make actual battle against demons from not a hell, but THE Hell.

But as quick as it appears, it vanishes. And once more, the friendly visage of Father Stanley MacKay appears, albeit with an even heavier melancholy. “Ah…forgive me. Perhaps that was a bit too strong of a reaction. That’s…a side of myself that I’m not quite fond of showing.”

“Nah. It’s my fault as well.” You offer an apologetic smile, and a hand to the priest. “I probably need to reevaluate my cuss list, given how a whole lot of them involve Old Scratch in one way or another. It ain’t smart to take demons lightly now, either.”

Once again, MacKay doesn’t even hesitate. He accepts the offered hand and apology immediately, squeezing firmly and giving it a good, solid shake. “You are only at fault if you do not learn from your mistake. Which clearly, you have. There is no more fault. But in the future,” he offers an amused smile. “Be sure to moderate your language when possible.”

“Huh?”

“Your earlier use of an expletive…”

Oh. “…oh, crap. Yeah, I, uh…sorry.”

The priest laughs. “I think I can settle for that.”

>MacKay approves +20!

There’s little else to talk about that can’t be addressed tomorrow, or in a future date. Both of you more than anyone else know how dangerous the fairy queen is. Whatever she’s planning, you’ll be damned sure to make sure it won’t catch you by surprise. And with MacKay’s help, you won’t have to face it all alone.

With that, the two of you empty your mugs, walk back to the barracks, bid each other good night, and finally fall into a sleep that is mercifully devoid of any nightmares.

>>

Well, if there's anyone who can break the stigma that the only way for demons to get stronger is evolution or fusion, it would be Brady sticking his Jack Frost into a demonica.

So long term, maybe leave the GUN moves to him.
>>
>>2156407
Sadly I think our demons are going to be replaced and fused down the line. Pixie got a pass due to her being the first demon we got, being a player favorite, and the opportunity we jumped on with Titania. But everyone else? It's natural evolution or bust unless we gain favor with every one of our demon's patron deity and ask for a power up like Pixie.

Price of being a Devil Summoner. You should play Raidou, they get really sad sometimes when you fuse them and it hurts.

>Recarm has replaced Posmundi!

Hoo boy.

Anywho, you've got a new demon in your ranks, Salamander! This elemental spirit of fire originally belonged to Joseph Putnam, but after freeing him from a slow and gruesome fate at the hands of Queen Titania, he is more than happy to serve Carina Squad and the Task Force.

However, at everyone’s current level, he is still too powerful of a demon for anyone to control, clocking in at a whopping Level 40. With that said, there are still options as to how to put your new demon to use. For one, you could simply use Salamander as fusion fodder for when you next visit the Fusion Labs. In that case, he will either be used with another demon to create an entirely new demon, or with the Sacrifice function, his essence will be used to increase the power of another demon. However, if you do not immediately wish to throw him to the mercies of Doctor Mido’s devices, the Task Force has another alternative.

>Introducing…The Emporium!

The Emporium is the official term designated for a space to obtain demons with other agents from across the world. The transfer is done by breaking down the demons into raw data and transmitting them from one corner of the world to another. An agent can obtain a brand new demon by either one of four ways: trading a demon for another demon, exchanging a magical item for another demon, outright paying Macca/Magnetite/Cash for a demon, or any combination of the above. Within the Emporium, there’s no such thing as an unwanted demon, for one man’s dead weight is another’s primary carrier.

If both of these fail, you can place the demon into storage, to be retrieved upon reaching the power to command it in battle…

+ Salamander (Lv. 40) [70% Loyalty]
--Race: Element

---Panic Voice (70% Panic to All foes)

She levels but much like pokemon a lower evolution has a lower statline and less access to certain more powerful moves. Her evolving would increase stats and move access potential.

"A queen appearing in Celtic mythology. She is the queen of Connacht in Ireland. Her name means "she who intoxicates." She is considered a goddess of the harvest and of rulership, owing to her many marriages with Irish kings.
Queen Mab tried to seduce the Irish hero Cu Chulainn using her own daughter, but failed. In the end, enraged by the enormous losses he inflicted on the army of Connacht, she manipulated him into breaking his geis (taboo), weakening him, and then had him killed by her magicians.
Mab's death is recorded in 11th-century documents. She is held to have been killed by a piece of hard cheese flung from a sling.
Mab is also known as queen of the fairies, and is identified with the fairy queen Titania." —Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE compendium

>Washington D.C.
>10:39 AM

Morning comes, and with it, the immense relief in knowing that there’s no deadline or mission hanging over your head. At the current moment, anyway. But you’re more than happy to take the reprieve while you still can. God knows when the brass are gonna throw you the next mission...whenever their little audit for the last mission finished.

This sentiment is shared by the rest of the team. Brady is certainly in a better mood than he was yesterday, even managing a few cracks at the breakfast table. In a similar vein, Fitz and Vicky are back to their usual selves, but a glance from MacKay confirms the feeling in your gut. Just pretending everything’s okay isn’t gonna make it so.

You make a mental note to talk to the team about Capretta’s death as soon as you can…

However, there’s something you need to dispense with first before that. You need to take care of Salamander.

The first impression you have of the Emporium is whether or not all of you walked into a bank. Beyond the two heavily armed guards at the entrance, you can make out a series of private booths or conference rooms. Each one has a terminal or interface of some sort where the transactions appear to be done with. Already, you can see a dozen or so other agents within their own booths, partially obscured by courtesy curtains or tinted windows.

You’d expect it to be louder, really. The archetype you had in your head was some sort of bizarre version of the trading floor on Wall Street, with tellers and callers screaming how the value of Raptor demons had gone down, and fire sales for demons aligned with Force-attributes. Ah, well. Perhaps you’ve stumbled on a quieter day.

“Conference room,” the woman manning the front desk says before you can even speak up. She flips through her magazine with the casual indifference of someone with severe flat affect. “The guards will see you through.”

One escort later finds the five of you inside a small room, seated at a table. Each of you are given a terminal, but since you’ve got temporary custody of the demon you wish to trade, it’s your COMP that gets linked into the interface.

As the data for Salamander begins to upload to the interface, you take time to look at the others. MacKay seems intent on browsing through a selection of Light-based demons, while Vicky expresses a frustrated sigh at the lack of a “cute” filter. Fitz taps at her own COMP, most likely managing her own demons.

It’s Brady that catches your attention. He doesn’t even bother trying to hide that he looks like he swallowed something sour as soon as you entered the room. The look on his face only worsens when another agent walks by the tinted window with a satisfied smile on his face and a credit slip for a large sum of Macca in his hands.

“Something on your mind, Brady?”

It takes a moment for your friend to snap to attention. He blinks once before he registers that you were the one asking, before he mutters, “…it’s nothing, Adrian. Nothing at all to worry about…”

He does an abysmal job of hiding the reprehension in his voice. To the point where the others stop what they’re doing and perk their heads up to attention. Come to think of it, he was also acting funny when you last visited the fusion labs. Hmmm…prolly best to nip this in the bud as quickly as you can.

You offer him a dry chortle. “You couldn’t get into a penny opera with that acting. C’mon, Brady. If something’s bothering you, you don’t have to hold it back. Granted, you shouldn’t hold back if it’s something that affects the team, but even if it doesn’t…”

“It’s kinda fucked, you know?” He can’t hold it in anymore, and he cuts you off before you can finish. “You know…all of this shit right here.”

He makes a wide gesture to all the equipment in the room. “You know…in the few months that we’ve been here, I’ve had everyone either telling me or treating their demons like they’re not just…tools or trained attack dogs. They’re sentient, aren’t they? With all their own desires and hopes.

“Yet here we are,” He says with a look of disgust towards the terminal. If he could spit, he probably would have. “Trading them away like they’re nothing more than property or inert objects whenever we aren’t fusing them to create something new when we get bored of them. Doesn’t that strike you as kind of fucked? How…bloody easy it is for the agency is to destroy sapient beings or slap a price tag on demons you have to negotiate with and befriend before you can use them?”

>“Our demons knew what they were getting into.” [Shift]

"It is a bit yeah, but considering what we face out there and who we are fighting to protect what's the alternative? Our demons will eventually get outpaced in the field as stronger enemies appear so we turn to other solutions. I was damn lucky to get Titania to boost Pixie but opportunities like that won't come often. I admit that the Agency could stand to be quite a bit less callous when it comes this stuff though.

What do you think we should do Brady?"

That's an earnest question, not a challenge.

He does realize that demons have a maximum growth, right? Also, has he talked to the demons about their views on fusion, or is he just pressing his ideas onto them?

It’s more along the lines of a different flavor of a Jimenez-esque characterization in so far as treating demons as very close friends.

What's Brady going to do when Jack Frost falls behind? I mean releasing him might be an option to be 'humane' but I don't think the Agency looks well on that.
>>
>>2158438
Luckily there's in game lore supporting Jack Frost being able to naturally evolve into Black Frost, and evolving into Frost Ace when given the Hero Belt.
Even though they're fusion acquired player wise.
>>
>>2158547
Sure. I'm actually expecting that to happen. I'm just curious what he thinks he was going to do.

...it wouldn’t be a lie to say that on a surface level, you didn’t feel like something was obviously wrong with fusion. There might’ve been subconscious whispers in the back of your head, but otherwise…the tearstained face of Napaea, even as she says she’ll remember you from wherever she’s going…

“…it is a bit…well,” You cast a wary eye to MacKay, who looks on with a look of wry resignation before continuing, “…yeah, you’re right. This whole thing is, to put it bluntly, kinda fucked. Make friends with the demons, fight with the demons, live with the demons…then you either fuse ‘em or trade ‘em away when you need something better.”

It’s good for Brady to value his demons. From what you’ve seen during down time, he’s always got them summoned out whenever possible, talking with them, feeding them snacks, or otherwise just shooting the breeze in a comfortable silence. Does this go beyond his own roster, and to all the demons you’ve collected so far? That question remains unanswered, but from the disgusted look he gave you back in the fusion room when you created Angel from Centaur and Napaea…

You pause to collect your thoughts. Much as you agree with how wrong the whole thing looks at from an outsider’s perspective, there’s a method, albeit one fueled by cold logic, that necessitates the practice.

“I’m not gonna disagree with you insofar as how…bad it looks when you put it like that. But the reality of the situation doesn’t really allow us to take those kinds of liberties.”

Brady’s scowl deepens. So it looks like he already knows all of this. Then what’s the point of this outburst? Frustration, maybe, just venting for the sake of letting it out? Still…

“We’re not just…here on social calls. Much as I’d like to keep my demons through this…career, the enemies we’re gonna be facing are only gonna get more dangerous. Our demons…our friends…no matter how much we power them up, they’re gonna get outpaced eventually. I was lucky that-”

He cuts you off, snorting derisively. “Yeah. Well, I’m sorry, mate, but not everyone here…or anyone else in the building, has got a fairy queen hanging off of their waist and like you do.”

Brady almost spits it out, and the vehemence of his words causes Vicky to wince. That…envy, perhaps? In any other situation, you might’ve thought he was jealous of Titania lavishing her…affections on you. But perhaps he’s just bitter that between everyone else, you’re the only one that has a demon able to break past its traditional limits.

But as justified as that envy might be, that’s a line too far. Especially when the phantom touch of the Fairy Queen’s hands still brings shivers down your spine, and a pit of unease in your stomach.

However, before you can say anything that you couldn’t take back, MacKay steps forward, beating an irritated Fitz to the punch.

“I understand that you’re frustrated,” the priest says, raising a hand to cut him off before he can snap back. “And angry at how…unyielding the Task Force in regards to this practice of becoming stronger. But you need to be careful with what you say.”

He shakes his head. “Yeah? Why should I be?”

“Take it in good faith when I say that in regards to her highness, she’s several degrees worse than your own fairy in certain things.” His eyes flicker towards yours in a look of solidarity, which you return with a wary nod. “I’m more than happy to give you an explanation and the finer details later, but you need to be careful with what you say.”

…he can’t argue with a priest, it seems. The tension deflates from his body somewhat, and Vicky doesn’t even bother hiding her own sigh of relief. Brady still looks irritated, but the bite’s gone out of his demeanor. If anything, the aura he’s putting out is one of weary bitterness. Regardless, it’s time for you to regain control of the situation.

Clearing your throat, you gesture towards the terminal where the Salamander has uploaded. “I’m disagreeing with you. I think this whole thing is screwy. But…what are we supposed to do? I’m being earnest here, dude, and I want your honest opinion. What do you think we should do given the situation we’ve got?”

That seems to catch him off-guard. His mouth opens as if he is to answer, but it closes just as quickly as he initially had perked up. “…if it were up to me,” he eventually mutters, chewing on his words with deliberate slowness, “…I’d find an option that doesn’t make me feel like a piece of shite who casually throws friends away at his leisurely convenience.”

…it’s definitely a vague answer that offers no concrete solution, but one that’s at least sincere and honest enough.

The chuckle that comes from your lips causes everyone to jump. Brady’s face turns a deep red before you raise your hand in conciliation. “I’m not…Brady, I’m not making fun of you. It’s a good answer. A damn good one, I might add.

“But, I’m getting off-topic,” you say, leaning forward with a serious expression. “Back to Salamander…we can’t handle his power right now. We ain’t strong enough. Since we’re responsible for seeing his penance for his actions in Kentucky, we gotta find a way for him to make amends. Finding an agent who can handle his power sounds like a pretty good answer, to me. Especially since we’re a little too…close and involved with the incident he’s responsible for…

“It’s not the most ideal, I’ll admit it, and it’s a damned hard choice. But at the end of the day…I’m just making another judgment call with what I've got in front of me.”

Yeah, these are definitely the dice I’ve missed so much. Still, gratz on passing by a hair’s breadth.

Your answer seems to mollify your teammate. While it’s clear that he still hasn’t found it in himself to completely be satisfied, the quickening boil that his temper had become finally simmered down. Brady clicks his tongue, shaking his head in resignation at your words.

“…yeah, I can get that.” He collapses back into his seat with weary resignation. “...it’s tough, isn’t it? Making the call, and all of that jazz. I’m still tilted with how…damned cold all this bullshite is, but…you make a fair point, bossman. Damned more eloquent than I could ever be, at least…”

>Brady approves +8.

From the looks of things, you have a gut feeling that this might come up again down the line. Your teammate seems to have accepted your reasoning, but it seems that he’ll still be unhappy. Perhaps it’s best for you to exercise caution when visiting both Emporium and Fusion Labs whenever he’s around…

Still, the crisis has been (temporarily) averted, and what could’ve easily devolved into a shouting match was methodically reasoned out. Communication, after all, is what makes and breaks relationships, or rather the inability to, at least.

All five of you once more return to your respective terminals. Even your ill-tempered teammate, after overcoming a shudder of self-loathing and disgust, manages to overcome his aversion and tentatively work the program. However, what separates him, and the rest of Carina Squad from yourself, is the fact that none of them have their COMPs hooked up to the terminal.

They don’t seem intent on trading their teammates just yet...but you hope that they at least took the time to address the inevitable time of contracting new allies or fusing them into more powerful demons.

You’ll cross that bridge when you get there, you suppose.

As soon as Salamander finishes uploading onto the terminal, a large graphic flashes across your screen. “MARKET IS OPEN!” it shouts, accompanied with large, obnoxious neon letters. Underneath it, the graphic of a man in a suit tips his hat and smashes a gavel on a nearby pedestal. You don’t even have time for the obnoxious southern accent to fade out of your skull before the interface begins to prompt you with instructions.

>Welcome to the Emporium, Squad_Leader_Brown!
>This simple interface will allow you to connect with Devil Summoners within the Task Force from all corners of the world!
>If you have any questions, please refer to the question mark in the upper right hand corner, or wait for an operator to give you assistance.

…how…mundane. At the very least, it seems to be hands’ free, as the device begins to hum and work its magic.

>Appraising value...

>…the minimum price you can set for [Salamander] is 40,000 Macca
>Alternatively: 10,000 units of refined Magnetite.

You try your best not to choke on your own spit. Holy crap, that is a lot of money. Running a quick search for other Salamanders reveals that their value is only half, if not a quarter of the worth of your own demon. Maybe it’s the blue skin…or the ridiculous skills Putnam trained his demon with. Talk about breaking the goddamn bank…

But from what you can remember, there’s also a demon-to-demon exchange. As well as magical items. And if push comes to shove, there’s the option of giving Salamander to the Emporium in exchange for credit to be used for a later date.

First…time to see what’s on the market...

Demons-to-Demons…it seems that with Salamander, you could potentially get two demons, maybe even three given how ridiculously valuable he is. Given how you and Brady are the only ones with a really diverse team, even MacKay to the certain extent, it wouldn't hurt to trade Salamander for demons that the girls could handle.

Alternatively, there are items within the Emporium that you could exchange for your demon. And these are items that aren’t apparently within Miss K’s armory. These items come straight either from secluded tribes, contracted to make trinkets for the organization, or purchased or looted off from other demons from around the world.

And what a selection! These run the gamut from magical items that increase attributes, enchanted charms that either block or reflect certain energy types…and what’s this?

Grimore. Unlike the burnt husks that you found on the bodies of the rogue devil summoners or the museum, these aren’t meant to contain demons. Rather, the pages within them contain magic to increase the strength of demons who absorb their magic.

Huh…it seems the solution to Brady’s problem has presented itself – holy fuck those are goddamn expensive, if not outright sold out due to their high demand. Oof. Even purchasing the cheapest one, a Light Grimore, would take at least a third out of Salamander's estimated minimal worth. Moving along…

I agree with Momunofu but man you could do better than the other two.

Kwancha has weak physical ability but it has 2 physical skills and a Hama skill already covered. The status ailments might be nice but banking on 45% chances will suck.

Incubus has decent Force Magic but allow me to show you Karasu Tengu, another Force user that has Strong Magic as opposed to Medium Magic. Also he evolves and has a buff.

We also don't have a Mudo yet.

I'll make one last pitch for anyone undecided or just coming in.

You're getting a 3 to 1 deal on a demon we can't use for a couple more arcs at least whose skill set, while a nice Fire one, isn't exactly unique around that level. We could find or fuse something else with Agidyne by the time we get to that point.

Gryphon is falling behind. We need a new Phys fighter. Momunofu can cover that.

We don't have Mudo yet. Inugami has a decent skill set for that.

Karasu is a solid overall Force spellcaster THAT CAN EVOLVE.

More demons, more options in combat and later in fusion, which is pretty key in SMT.
>>
>>2161712
>>2161725
>>2161766
Fine i'll got with this then
>>
>>2161766
by that point we could just fuse gryphon and make something stronger physically.
>>
>>2161766
keep in mind we are going to split the demons tho.
>>
Can't we input the Salamander's data into the network and then sumkon that data?

If so, I'll support the Karasu, Inugami, and Momunofu idea.
>>
>>2161780
The only option you could fuse with is Angel (cause we don't want to get rid of High Pixie or Pyro Jack) and if you do that we'd lose our Bufu, Zan, and Hama coverage unless you also want to slap those onto a physical demon (which usually has low magic capability).

And this is all assuming the Gryphon + Angel combo is something worthwhile. That's why I say having more demons to fuse is a good idea. More options.
>>
>>2161712
>>Exchange Salamander for demons.
>>
>>2161712
>Keep Salamander in storage.
>>
>>2161785
That would be cheating, anon. The Task Force mandates that data and demon go from one COMP to the other to prevent Summoners from gaming the system, or creating multiple instances of demons to sell en-mass.

Okay, things have gotten a little bit cluttered, but it seems (from what I can tell) the overwhelming majority want to trade Salamander for the demons as opposed to storage, with items getting no votes. Unless I'm wrong, which I might be because I've been up for 20 hours. In any event, can I get a final vote for the sake of convenience? Please don't input demon choices. We can do that later.

“So is this goodbye, then?”

Salamander’s voice comes out through the interface, right into the interface’s headset. It comes out as more of statement of fact than a question, but it doesn’t seem to be sullen or resentful. Merely…observant.

You nod. “Who knows? Maybe we’ll run into each other in the field. God knows there’s bound to be some overlap between interseas operations.”

“The White God most likely does,” the demon answers dryly, “However, while He refuses to share those statistics, I’m more than sure those odds are abysmally low.”

Muttering as you finalize the transaction, you mutter in response, “Low isn’t ‘never’. People win lotteries with less odds.”

“Hmph.” What you could detect as an enigmatic smile appears on the demon’s face, revealing rows of pointed teeth. “Cheeky brat. But I suppose that if it weren’t for your actions…” The demon shudders. “I’d still be in the tender ‘mercies’ of that fetid fairy queen.”

You refrain from pointing out that Titania wants something back in return for that. Best not to ruin the heart-to-heart moment the two of you are having. “You’re welcome, by the way.”

“I suppose I should be. Working alongside another human is torture in of itself, but I suppose it’s more tolerable than Titania. I do suppose I should thank you then; you are sending me very far away from the fairy realm. As far as prisons go, this certainly is the biggest one I’ve experienced so far.”

The final confirmation appears on the interface. One push of the button, and Salamander’s gone. Possibly forever. “And for what it’s worth…I’m sorry my friend shot out your eye.”

“Bah…I probably had it coming, even if I can regenerate. But digressing from that…” Salamander looks directly at you. “Watch yourself around Titania. She never does favors for anyone without expecting something in return. Always remind yourself that no matter how aesthetically pleasing she can appear, her heart is that of a demon’s. Not of a human’s.”

“…I will.” You push the button, and the transfer begins. “…thanks for the advice.”

The demon laughs, low and rumbling, as his body begins to break into swirls of data. “Farewell, Devil Summoner. May our next meeting occur as far away from Titania as possible...”

Now that’s a sentiment you could get behind…

...in hindsight, that was a bad choice of words, especially with thoughts of Titania still infesting your mind.

Stupid, stupid lizard brain.

As you attempt to purge thoughts of demonic thots from your cranium, the transfer completes. Within seconds, data floods into your interface, indicating that the transfer was a success. Already, the three progress bars for each demon are almost full, and it doesn’t take long for them to finish loading.

>Congragulations!
>You have successfully traded [Salamander]!
>You have successfully received [Momunofu], [Karasu Tengu], [Inugami]!

All that’s left is to dole them out to the others…

interesting choice. In-character, I'd prefer an item so we don't rustle a certain someone's feathers any more than necessary, but Karasu can evolve just as much as pixie.

well, I was gonna say we could fuse angel and Gryphon to make Bilwis which has a higher STR stat than Gryphon, but I had many many fusion accidents in 4.

Come on guys Karasu is cool. Who cares about Brady's demon fetish, he just got Hairy Jack. Adrian should get something. It was his demon he gave up AND he's the one who owes Titania.

we just got pyro jack tho

Not everything is about us senpai.
We have a whole team to micromanage.
Victoria only has two demons for crying out loud.
>>
>>2163304
none of which are even lv20 yet.
Adrian has 2 lv20/+s
Brady has a lv20 Hairy Jack
Fitz has a 21 Moh Shuvuu
MacKay's got 2 lv20/+s

So Victoria has no 20s and 2 low tier demons that really won't be doing diddly squat against any big contenders.
>>
>>2163304
Which is why I say Vicky should get two. (I'm the first vote.)

2. Brady just got a demon, if anything I'd give Karasu to Vicky over him.

3. Salamander was Adrian's demon, it was his boon that he gave up, and now it's his ass (literally) on the line with Titania

4. More fusion options are nice and we sure as hell know Brady won't use that aspect.

“…he isn’t cute…” Vicky’s face turns into one of faux-dismay as the data for Momunofu downloads onto her COMP. The mechanic manages an exaggerated moan of sorrow before flopping down onto the table. “…this demon isn’t even gap-moe, Adrian…”

Fitz snorts at the show she’s putting on. “Doesn’t matter if he’s cute or not, Vicky. I can already see the ass your new friend is gonna kick down the line. I ain’t about to complain about getting’ a fire-breathin’ god of doggos, but since you’ve got two demons while we’ve got at least three…”

“I know…” Her voice comes out muffled from where she’s buried her face into her sleeve. “…I need to recruit some more demons…I haven’t had the time since Delaware…”

“Accordin’ to the records, there’s a demon-infested forest not even a mile outta the city.,” she replies, gesturing to a window that certainly does not lead outside of the building, “Since Central’s got our asses grounded for the time bein’, why don’t we make it a field trip-”

Vicky’s head snaps up faster than you’d give her credit for, with a wild-eyed and frantic look in her eyes that takes all of you aback. “…Fitz…” she whispers in as somber and low a voice she can possibly manage, “Do you remember what happened the last time the two of us went into a demon-infested forest? With the explicit goal of collecting demons in both of our minds?”

…much to your shock, and the other men at the table, former cop actually blanches. Shifting in her chair uncomfortably, she scratches the back of her head with a twisted grimace on her face before answering, “…ya got a point there. Actually, you know what? Forget about it. I ain’t about to risk a repeat performance…”

“Maji? Yatta…” Her relief is apparently enough for her to slip back into Japanese…and to slide back into her chair with the grace of a limpet.

Brady frowns at the display. “I feel like we’re missing something important here-”

“Shut it/Urusai!” the two women snap at him simultaneously, and the Brit immediately clams up and stops talking.

A braver leader might insist on hearing the details of this story…if you recall correctly, from the training camp…was it the two of them or MacKay that came to the center of the forest completely soaked from head-to-toe?

Sadly, that braver leader is not you. And your judgment defaults to respecting a woman’s (or in this case, two women’s) privacy of what is clearly a noodle incident.

“…if anything, this new demon should keep me away from the forest for a while.” The haunted look on Vicky’s face disappears, and she turns to you with a wan smile on her face. “Thank you very much, Adrian. I’ll be sure to put him to good use in the future.”

(cont.)
>>
“Yeah, no kiddin’.” The usual cocky grin on Fitz’s mouth returns to its crooked, lopsided shape. “Thanks a bunch, Sawbones. Been meanin’ to expand my arsenal…but now, I don’t have to! And I can’t say no to a good doggo, demon or otherwise.”

>Fitz approves +10!
>Victoria approves +10!

The other two don’t seem to be too put out by not receiving any demons. MacKay’s Unicorn is easily one of the more powerful members of the roster, and Brady’s arguably the most diverse of the bunch. If anything, you’d be miffed if they expressed annoyance of being passed over.

Either way…

“So, you are my new master?” The voice of your new demon intones from the headset. On the screen of your COMP, the winged humanoid appraises you before bowing low. “Very well, then! I am Karasu Tengu of the Yoma. Your enemies are my enemies, and my victories, your own. Together, we will bring order to the chaos of the world, and death to all those who would disrupt the peace.”

The zeal in his voice is contagious, and you can't help but offer a confident smile in return. "I'm looking forward to it, then. It's nice to meet you."

>You have acquired Yoma Karasu Tengu!
>You now have 5/8 slots in your COMP filled!

...now comes the dull part.

One of the first things that you learn in med school is that medical dramas aren’t the most realistic depictions of how a hospital works. Granted, they’re emotionally charged moments during intense situations, but half of the shit that flies in “House” or even “Grey’s Anatomy” would get someone censured and their ass out on the street. You do not shout at your secretary, you do not mistreat your peers, and God forbid you piss off the guys in charge of the supply room.

Some would argue that angering the folks in toxicology or the culture labs might be worse, but you digress. Keeping and maintaining a professional, if not amicable, relationship with your suppliers and support techs certainly expedites the ease of doing your job. And if you’re on real good terms with them…at least, that’s how mom justified bringing home medical supplies from Bethesda General nearly every month or two.

So suffice to say that you’ve really got nothing to lose and a helluva lot to gain if you cozy up to the Task Force vendors. The Medical Depot and Miss K’s Armory are the vendors the team is currently authorized to use. The implication of other special vendors doesn’t go unnoticed by any of you, but until Central decides to give you clearance, there isn’t any harm in getting close with both vendors.

>28, 54, 4 Luck

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that you hit it off better with the Depot than the Armory. Certainly helps that you’ve got seven years of pre- and formal med school. And you’d be lying if you didn’t say that it felt comfortable to slip back into a somewhat familiar environment after months of playing detective and anti-demon soldier. Here, you can certainly fall back into old habits without worrying too much of someone not understanding what you might say.

The perky nurse who greeted you last time, Elena Salzar, was more than happy to see you again, if not a little miffed that you didn’t call her. You defuse that bomb by offering a platitude about the last mission left you little time for social calls. It gets you the stink eye, but it quickly dissipates when you offer to lend a hand around the Depot.

Turns out that she isn’t the only one relieved for not only an extra hand, but for someone who knows their way around medicine. Names and faces go by quickly, and hands and introductions given. The taciturn and elderly Doctor Joseph Roget constantly butts heads with newboy Conrad Miller, a physical therapist with a penchant for cigarettes. Meanwhile, Elena looks on with technician Rachel Greer, a loud black woman with a thick Orleans accent and an even thicker pair of arms that end up prying the two of them apart in their more heated spats.

Talk about dysfunction junction. Maybe the advice of maintaining good relationships doesn't apply to within the storage department...but still. Thank God that it’s a rare day for all four of them to be in at the same time.

Most of the help you offer finds you on your feet, moving from place to place in search of some esoteric drug or magic item. It was before any of their time, apparently, that an accident had left the depot completely destroyed. The report was inconclusive as to whether or not it was demon-related, but it ended with the prior administration being transferred out of Central, and a hasty reassembling of the Depot as fast as possible. That haste to provide support items and medicine to field agents came with half of the stock remaining in the packaging they arrived in, or otherwise strewn about in some pattern of organized chaos.

There are designated areas to summon demons. The floor the vendors are located on is unfortunately not one of them. Much as your back protests, the burden of reorganizing falls onto you and a spare person while another mans the front desk. From the looks of things, it’s gonna take a few weeks for everything to get in line with hospital standards. But this is a step in the right direction, given how without your involvement, it might’ve taken two months with the depot’s limited manpower.

Interactions with a majority of the crew are pleasant. You’re already chummy with Elena, and you find Roget a surprising font of insight for a history of medicine and magic. A playful slap from Greer is enough to stagger you, and there’s something awfully endearing about how she pronounces “boo” and “honey”. Miller, on the other hand…

“So what’s your deal, Brown?”

You peek up from the opposite end of the crate the two of you are lifting, a shipment of reagents to be turned into Dis-Poisons and other status aliment cures of the like. The therapist’s mouth is a thin line, a prelude to an argument. Only whenever it’s with you, it isn’t the shouting match with Roget as much as it’s just an exchange of words and innuendos in a tone dryer than the fucking Sahara. This guy’s had a bone to pick with you since day one. Not that he’d ever reveal it for whatever goddamn reason. Not even if you press the subject.

“My deal?” You fire back. “The hell are you on about?”

“Don’t play dumb with me,” the therapist scowls. “I’m just real curious as to why a field agent like yourself is busting your balls down with support. Shouldn’t you be off fighting demons and getting the tar kicked out of you?”

This fucking guy. “I don’t know if you haven’t noticed, but my team’s on standby. And until Central gives me the order to go out or stop, which hasn’t happened at all since I’ve started helping out…so I’m free to spend my time however I please.”

(cont.)
>>
“Huh. Well isn’t that convenient?” The guy looks like he’s on the verge of spitting on the ground. “So what draws you to our sorry corner of the Task Force? If you’re looking for good air, the room with the fresh filter is down twenty meters to the right…”

Surprisingly, it’s easy to keep calm, and just let the bait dangling in front of you to go unanswered. You’ve dealt with worse individuals, both in your prior life and in your career in the Task Force. Compared to Her Royal Bitchiness…the guy really isn’t much to even think about.

“Well, if I’m being honest…I kinda miss doing just straightforward medical stuff.” Burdened as you are, you manage to answer back without displaying any strain in your voice. “It’s a bit of a jump from bandages to a simple healing spell. I don’t think I’ve taken magic for granted, other than combat spells.”

Miller doesn’t look convinced. But you continue, gesturing towards the mess of the supply room, “And I can’t exactly walk away from a mess that I know I can help fix.”

“So is that it?” He demands. “Are we just some pity project for you to take care of?”

God, what the fuck. “No. No you aren’t. I may not be too much of a part in your social circle…but we do share medicine as peers, don’t we? If anything, I’m looking out for my team just as much. Because when demon magic runs dry, it’s gonna be my ass everyone’s looking to patch them up.”

To your surprise, the therapist relaxes, even as far as to start laughing. But not at you. “Yeah…you got that right at least. I’ve lost count of the number of boneheaded agents that completely skip past us on the way to that Russian broad’s armory. More often than not, they’re the same boneheads that I have to end up treating when they come back to the infirmary.

“And the damn kicker?” He offers you a humorless smile. “They’re the ones who think they can just rely on demonic magic and a bottle of Vicodin for all their aches and pains. It’s not often that we get serious customers here at the depot. A third just grab the bare minimum of medicine, another third try to punk us for drugs or hit on the girls…and then there’s the third that just doesn’t show up. And find themselves coming home on a stretcher or in a bodybag.”

...it seems that Miller has a beef regarding field agents. One isn’t completely unwarranted, either. Maybe that’s why he was so hostile.

“Still…” He squints at you with open suspicion. “You aren’t looking to get Vicodin yourself, are you? It'd be real easy for you to slip yourself a bottle or two since the others seem to trust you...”

You emphatically deny it. “No. Of course not. I know too damn well what happens when you get hooked on it. It ain't pretty.”

“Glad someone in this damn building knows common sense…” Miller shakes his head, before turning back toward you. “And what about Elena? I don’t need a degree to see that she's attracted to you. Last thing she needs is a distraction…or someone who might not come back in one piece.”

>“Elena is just a friend.”
>“I’ve already got someone.”

It’d be a lie to say that you didn’t find Elena to be…not quite what most would call “smokin’ hot”, but somewhere between cute and beautiful. Still, while you can acknowledge the fact that the young nurse is a very pretty woman…

“She’ll be disappointed,” You answer, offering a friendly smile, “Because she isn’t going to be nothing more than a colleague, a medicinal peer and/or a friend. And like you said. It really wouldn’t work. Two different fields, too many responsibilities…”

If Miller was relieved, he doesn’t show it. He takes your answer as it is without any outward reaction save for a nod of understanding. “Then you’ve got another woman in your life then, huh?”

Faces of the various women you’ve gotten involved with flash like a slide show through your mind. But even out of the more recent ones: resignated Madison with her tracking bracelet, the screaming Alyssa pressed tight against your body, the cheerful Elena with her medicines and forms…

It’s the cocky grin of Sarah Fitzgerald, her face streaked with graveyard dirt and gunpowder, that lingers the longest in that lightning thought.

But you push that thought away, burying it deep in your mind to deal with for another day. “…let’s just say that as it stands, my current lifestyle wouldn’t be the most productive enterprise.”

>You are now on friendly terms with the Medical Depot!
>You will receive a 15% discount on items in the future!
>Depending on the person at the desk, they will supply you with additional items!

>>Miss K

“Easy” as it was to finally integrate yourself into Central’s medical community, socializing with a certain weapons dealer isn’t nearly the same cakewalk.

“I think I’ve seen this in a video game once,” Miss K initially said, languidly draped over a couch without any care in the world. “Getting close to the merchant so the hero could obtain discounts and special items…you really aren’t subtle at all, Brown.”

“You said yourself that depending on performance, I’d get better stuff,” You shot back. “And I can’t exactly take Central’s breadcrumbs over the course of God knows how long before they upgrade me. So given that option, getting on your good side is one way to get at least some form of limited access.”

She chewed on your answer, making a drawn out noise of contemplation before flashing you a toothy smile. “Can’t exactly fault ya for that, now, can I?”

“I would certainly hope not.”

“Careful now, boya. There are others in the business who aren’t nearly as lax as I am…”

“You’re not nearly old enough to call me that,” You deadpanned.

She pretended to swoon, clutching at her heart. The illusion of it all fails only from the mirthful grin that stretches her mouth from ear to ear. “Aw…thanks for the compliment, but you’re gonna need more than sweet talk to get on my good side…Jonah!”

The boy of undeterminable descent appeared from the next room only a split second after she finished pronouncing his name. “Yes?”

“Set up the target range. Standard distances, standard handicap.” Miss K leapt out from the couch, gesturing for you to follow her into the backroom. All the while, that pearly smile of hers hadn’t left her face. If anything, it was growing. “Let’s see if the hero’s shooting skills are where his mouth is. Because if you think you can get on my good side without showing me what you’ve got, then you’re more than a bullet short of a magazine, boya!”

Her antics found you dragged into a shooting range. From a casual glance, it might’ve looked no different than a standard backroom for any gun dealer. Private booths, a rack for safety goggles and earphones...it certainly smelled like one too. But you had little doubt that given the Task Force and Miss K’s eccentrics, there’s more to the place than meets the eye.

“Pull!” She sing-songed to Jonah, as she grabbed a nearby handgun. By the time the boy sent a target to the back of the range, the Russian had already slammed a magazine home and chambered a round, aiming her sights down the range at the fleeing paper. “Try to keep up with me, Brown. I’ll be real disappointed if you don’t.”

Not one to be left behind, you quickly accepted the gun that the boy delivers to you, and moved towards the booth adjacent to hers. Already, she’s fired off a couple of rounds, quickly taking a lead both in where her bullets go and in how fast her trigger finger is.

You’ve definitely got your work cut out for you.

>In order to have the privilege of performing errands for Miss K, you need to prove that you are an able gunslinger!

Guns aren’t your specialty. For whatever reason, Brady’s the one with the sharpest eye, and you don’t even need to say anything about Fitz. But you’ll be damned if you don’t give it your all and who her what you’re made of.

If you can’t pin-point and aim at the critical weaknesses, then you’ll just have to try your damned best to hit the target where it generally counts, and put them down as fast as possible.

If demons are real why can we still buy the lesser keys of solomon at fucking barnes and noble?

How many people, upon being informed that every monster myth and legend is real and wants to kill people, just kinda curled up[ in the fetal position and waited to die?

For a real question, how much does the task-force tell the different nations about whats really going on, and how high in a nation/military do you gotta be to be informed?
>>
>>2183028
What do the demons think about the Doom games?
>>
>>2183037
>Lesser Keys of Solomon
You need more than just recitation of the words and blood to summon a demon. What separates a Barnes and Noble "grimoire" from an actual grimoire is the fact that the book itself needs to be infused with magical energy at the time of its creation, and a large amount of magnetite to summon the demon. And since the amount of MAG needed to initially summon and contract a demon is entirely dependent on that demon's power...almost all of the demons of King Solomon are way too powerful for some edgy teenage satanist to try and summon. And that's all depending on whether or not the Task Force has destroyed/sealed them away, or they're in hiding and refuse to answer summons.

>Heroic BSOD
That's why the hospital test exists, along with similar trial-by-fire inductions. If you crack under the pressure, you're either out of the running or you're under severe probation. The Task Force doesn't want fragile folks in their ranks, as well as inflexible individuals who can't adapt or change their paradigm of thinking in a heartbeat.

>Nations
As the Task Force is a subsidiary of the United Nations, they are beholden only to a secret XCOM-esque Council, who have representatives from every major country. These individuals aren't necessarily world leaders or the exact representatives to the UN, but are still geo-political figures in their own right. Most of the worst major demon incursions can be swept aside as "UN Peace Keeping" or interventions, but there are individuals outside of the Council who know what's up.

In terms of who's in the know...take the US for example. Nothing less than five-star rank, and there's only a handful of four-stars who know. Not even the president knows of the existence of demons. In terms of departments who know...the higher echelons of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense automatically defer missions that potentially involve demons to the Task Force proper. And the Task Force loans Division One (Virgil's Team) to JSOC when there are demons in hot zones, predominantly in the Middle East.

The Task Force operates on a DEFCON-esque system in terms of alert with three levels, each with their own sublevel of description and readiness. This system is called the SERAPH readiness system and currently, the SERAPH system is set to Grigori.

>>Eden [5] [Exercise Term - The Garden of God]
[Normal Readiness - Lowest state of readiness]
Demonic incursions are rare, or outright non-existent. The lightest state of security for all Task Force operatives.

>>Grigori [4] [Exercise Term - Those who Are Awake]
[Above Normal - Increased intelligence watch and strengthened security measures]
Demonic incursions are a common occurrence. Task Force operatives are being deployed to minimize demonic incursions and keep the populous safe and suppress information of demons.

>>Babel [3] [Exercise Term - The Gate of God]
[Increase in force readiness above that required for normal readiness]
Demonic occurrences are happening on a daily basis to the extent of civilians noticing odd events, and deployments are almost non-stop for Task Force operatives. Information suppression is at its maximum and the Task Force begins sharing information with the world's black op units.

>>Revelation [2] [Exercise Term - Apocalypse of John]
[Next step to a war between humans and demons]
The world has become aware of the existence of demons. Martial law may be enacted by the sovereign powers of the world to keep their citizens safe. The armed forces of the world will have limited access to the Demon Summoning Program by working with Task Force Operatives.

>>Megiddo [1] [Exercise Term - The Final Battle]
[Maximum readiness - Open War between Mankind and Demons]
The nuclear option. Should the SERAPH level ever reach this point, an experimental A.I. named STEPHEN will automatically dispense the Demon Summoning Program to the world at large for civilians and soldiers alike via the internet. Cleaning up the mess of what comes after can wait, as prioritizing humanity's survival necessitates the dissemination of the DSP to the whole world.

Marksmanship is all about keeping a level head and a steady trigger finger. A good marksman takes just the right amount of time to line up his target, ease his breathing, and squeeze, not pull, the trigger. Sign of an amateur? Empties the magazine as fast as possible without taking into account the fact of recoil and how fucked his aim is after two shots.

Normal circumstances, however, these are not. So you’ll have to make do with the best you have. And from what you’ve done, the best with what you have is pretty damned good. You’ve always been one to have a cool head under fire, even before the Task Force.

Between five targets and five magazines, you manage to beat her with a lead by half of a magazine. That has to count for something, right? And by squinting down the range, even as Jonah reels back all of the targets, you can proudly say that while your aim wasn’t nearly as tight as Miss K’s, all five perps were effectively dead.

The Russian whistles, low and impressed as the two of you compare targets. “Not bad, boya. You’re a better shot than I expected. You’re no Billy the Kid, but as far as impromptu shooting without preparation…you certainly outpace a whole crop of the agents that come here.”

>You try and fail to keep the red out of your cheeks.

“Still…” She continues, setting down her gun and clearing the magazine, “Knowing how to shoot a gun isn’t nearly the same as knowing how to treat or maintain one. You Americans have a saying, no? God made man…”

“Samuel Colt made them equal,” You finish for her with a grin. “And John Browning made them civilized.”

She nods in approval. “Very good. There should be a correction, though. A tiny change to the slogan to fit with the times.”

“And what would that be?”

“It’s simple, actually. God made mankind and demons…Samuel Colt made them equal…” She pauses to examine her gun, before sliding an empty chamber back into its original position. Aiming down the range, she presses the trigger, and the dry CLICK of the firing pin fills the empty space. “John Browning gave them the edge…”

Her eyes flash a mirthful, playful light as she extends her free hand towards you. “And Miss K supplies the goodies. Consider yourself honored, Brown. I don’t just let anyone behind the counter, even if they’re just gonna be task jockeys.”

>You are now on friendly terms with the Armory!

The days pass by, running back and forward between vendor and the barracks. While the five of you still show up for mandatory team training, a majority of everyone’s free time finds them working on other projects. That isn’t to say that you’re drifting apart or not on speaking terms with each other. You all still decompress in the same zone at the end of the day, and sharing meals and idle chatter with each other. It’s just that in preparation for the next mission, all of you have your own area of expertise to work on your own.

Not to say that help isn’t welcome when offered. MacKay offered to help you with a particularly nasty lumbar stretch in the gym, and in turn, you spotted for him when he went to the free weights. Fitz helped Vicky work on her CQC (read: kicking her ass all over the sparring pad) and endurance. At one point, you saw her and Brady hunched over a COMP, the two of them working on some kind of holographic schematic for God knows what. And one moment found Vicky giving you pointers on how to drive like a Tokyo street racer.

>The bonds of Squad Carina have grown stronger.
>Brady approves +8
>Fitz approves +5
>MacKay approves +7
>Vicky approves +6

But who could forget your demons? There is an upper limit to how strong your demons can get, but you’re more than willing to put that to the test. And with a new demon on the team roster, you figure that there isn’t any harm in taking him out for a spin.

That being said, it isn’t going to be easy to just simply power them up as is. You’ll need to pace yourself carefully, and set the right pace for what you think your demons can handle. If you mess up or push them too hard, they won’t be entirely belligerent, but they won’t be happy with you for a while…

>>Choose one:
>Low intensity training. [Low risk, large chance of small increase in power]
>Medium intensity training. [Medium risk, moderate chance of moderate increase in power.]
>High intensity training. [High risk, low chance of sharp increase in power]

You decide to pace yourself, and take the training at a controlled, moderate pace. You want to push your demons as best as they can without overreaching or causing undue stress. While the gain in power won't be anything to awe others, it'll certainly give you a sense of pride, at the very least.

The designated training zone for your demons is a few miles outside of D.C., deep within the nearby forests and protected by some kind of magical seal that drives others away. From the way people automatically turn around, it seems that only ones that can enter the zone and bypass the enchantment are those who bear COMPs. Well, no surprise then that you pass with no difficulty.

The handbook said that this spot was completely private, as close to a contained environment, second only to a dimensional rift into a demon realm. Hopefully, whatever demon created the magical spell did a damn good job, because you know that things are gonna get a little noisy...

It’s incredibly grueling work, but the payoff is hella worth it. Only a few days of mock battles in the woods, and a series of battle simulators in a VR room are enough to at least gain some advances in power.

>Karasu Tengu has learned Sukukaja!

This success has not only increased the power of your demons, but also boosted their morale and appreciation of you in an unexpected, but not unwelcome manner…

>All of your demons gain a +30% increase to their Loyalty rating!

There are three demons that bring gifts to bear for the auspicious occasion. Three allies that you’ve held onto for the longest time, including the first demon that proved to you that humanity was not alone.

“A token of my appreciation, master!” High Pixie zips around your head, giggling as she presses a small marble-shaped object into your hands. It is warm, smooth to the touch, and just by holding it, you can sense an immense magical energy stored within it. “A Bead! Crush it, and if you’re injured or on the brink of death, it will heal all of your wounds!”

>You put a Bead into your inventory.

“Master, master!” Gryphon seems to pause, then shudders violently and claws the earth. Before you can move to help, the bird rears back…and promptly vomits a gigantic hairball onto the forest floor. You try not to look too sick as it paws through the gunk, before finding what it was searching for. “Take this, Master! Three life stones from demons I ate! Tasty, they were, master!”

>You put three (x3) Life Stones into your inventory.

“Child of Adam, present thy hands to me.” You obey Angel, who takes them into her own. Her lips are pulled back into a warm and friendly smile, and you have little doubt that behind that blindfold, her eyes are smiling as well. “Take this as a symbol of our friendship. May this Magic Mirror protect you and our allies should I depart from this physical realm…”

>You put one Magic Mirror into your inventory.

Now all that’s left…
