You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you have been sneaking through a Hegemony base, trying to access an alien network so Katya could tell you the location of the ship you were searching for.

You stalk through the aisles of work benches and tables, trying to get an eye on everything that was being worked on here. Most of it was mundane stuff. Computers, weapons, armor components, and other things needed to take care of a base's everyday needs.

However, you do see something that catches your attention. A gigantic rifle, larger than one that you've ever seen. Clearly not meant to be held in the hands of a normal man.

But it looks to be just the right size for a certain giant armor you had just acquired...

You quietly note the presence of the weapon, which looked to be getting the last touchups by a team of mechanics and forward the data to Tank. He of course is happy to keep that in mind.

With nothing else to find and/or steal, you continue on through the Engineering section, with nobody batting an eye in your direction. Practically everybody here was a low level laborer, so they had no reason to question the presence of a pair of officers lurking about. The less they made themselves stand out, the better, you assume.

You make it through the Engineering section and exit the other side. Elizabeth navigates you through several more hallways until you come to a large, sealed door. Unfortunately, it looked like it wasn't the type that opened regularly.

"Damn." Elizabeth grimaces as she glances at the sign posted on the front of the security door. "Looks like we need much higher security access than what the freighter crew had to get through here."

"Can we bypass it?" You ask.

"Well, I got a few tools to use for situation like this." Elizabeth nods. "But the problem isn't the door, it's getting through whoever is behind it. If we don't have the right clearances, they'll be able to tell right away that we don't belong."

"There is an alternate path we can take." Katya points upwards. "However, it is an external maintenance hatch. At this altitude, the winds would be rather hazardous to small carbon-based lifeforms like yourselves."

"Well, I suppose we take the high road then." You sigh as you glance up at the hatch. "Just uh... what kind of winds are we expecting here?"

"Extremely high and extremely hazardous." Katya says in a helpful tone.

"Great." You groan.

You, Elizabeth, and Katya climb up a nearby maintenance ladder that leads up to the hatch. Thankfully, you find some kit left behind by the maintenance crews, consisting of light environment suits and safety lines. You each put on the closest fitting ones and Katya presses a hand against a pad next to the hatch, causing it to slide open.

And the wind hits you like a truck as you climb out of the hole. You're only barely able to clip yourself onto a safety line already set up. Elizabeth yelps as she's caught off guard by the wind, but you manage to catch her long enough for her to clip onto the safety line as well.

"Thanks for the save there, Captain." Elizabeth gasps.

"The more human shields the better." You joke weakly.

Katya, for her part, steps out completely unfazed. In fact, she doesn't even clip onto the safety line, her robot body merely clamping onto the outer skin of the facility.

"I will lead you to the optimal entry point." Katya says. "Please try to keep pace."

Meanwhile the harsh winds continue to whip at you and Elizabeth.

"Katya! Just take it slow for now!" You grunt as you try to maintain a hold on the safety line.

"Acknowledged. Moving at reduced pace." Katya nods as she casually walks forward.

You and Elizabeth struggle against the howling wind as it whips and pushes against your bodies, as if you were trying to wade upriver.

However, you hear a lower, much deeper hum below the high pitched howl of the wind. A sound that was more similar to ship engines. You look up to see a Hegemony patrol fighter hovering above you. Its weapons weren't armed or pointed at you, thankfully, meaning his guard wasn't up, but the fact he was here was not a good sign.

"Unidentified maintenance team, state your purpose." The pilot's voice buzzes over built in speakers in your suits. "There is no scheduled exterior maintenance at this time."

Crap, what should you do?

"I can activate a defensive system to deal with the obstacle." Katya offers over your private channel.

"Um, maybe I can talk him down..." Elizabeth mumbles.

"Elizabeth, work your magic." You order.

"Right." Elizabeth takes a deep breath before reactivating her comms. "Ohmygosh, I am soooo sorry! I accidentally left my toolkit up here and was just trying to get it back, or I'd have to report it to my supervisor! And, well, you know how they can be!"

Of course, Elizabeth puts on her most innocent, slightly ditzy voice she could manage, to give the impression she was a precocious but absentminded worker. No doubt to try to appeal to the pilot.

"So can you just let us off without reporting anything? Plleeeeaase~?"

Jeez, knowing that it was Elizabeth saying these word was almost disgusting...

Unfortunately, whatever Elizabeth said, it didn't look like the pilot bought it. You see the cannons on its nose arm and point down towards you. Thankfully, Katya's reflexes were faster. Much faster. She kneels down and presses her palm against the surface of the base's hull. Just a meter away from her, a turret lifts up, but instead of a cannon, the turret was instead holding a large, purple crystal pointed right at the fighter. The crystal glows bright like a sun before a thin beam of light lances out of its end, spearing the fighter straight through the cockpit and causing it to crash down onto the hull in flames.

"The hostile pilot has most likely already alerted his comrades to the security breach." Katya says casually. "I suggest we move quickly."

That's when you see Tank's channel open up, and through it, you could hear alarm sirens blaring in the background. Obviously, he was asking you what to do.

"Tank." You grin. "There's happens to be a VERY BIG GUN that would match very well with your VERY BIG ARMOR. Sound interested?"

Rapid clicking over the comms seems to indicate a yes.

"Well, just head over to their Engineering wing. You can't miss it." You say happily as you switch off the comm. "Okay, I think we better get moving. They'll be plenty distracted for the next few minutes."

"This way!" Katya chimes as you leads you both to another hatch. The hatch opens automatically in her presence and the three of you drop down into the thankfully calmer interior.

And then you find yourself standing on top of an overhead catwalk. Down below, you can see what looks like the crystal caverns. The ceiling and walls were lined with purple tinted crystals, all surrounding a large, central crystal in the center of the circular chamber. You could also see a flurry of environment suited scientists all doing their research and other tasks, completely unaware of events outside.

"So what do we do?" Elizabeth asks. "Capture, kill, or scatter?"

"Let's capture." You grin as you pull out your pistol.

"Standard tag and bag." Elizabeth nods as she pulls out her own pistol.

"Mainframe detected. Moving to interface." Katya says simply as she jumps down, startling all of the gathered scientists.

"HANDS UP!" You roar as you drop down, pistol up and ready. Meanwhile, Elizabeth drops down behind you and locks the door to prevent anybody else from barging in. "Don't move and you don't get hurt!"

The Heg scientists immediately raise their hands in terror. They're scientists, not soldiers, after all.

"Interfacing with mainframe." Katya says as she presses her palm against the central crystal. "Updating drivers."

"Wait, is she..." One of the scientists gasps.

"Sit down and shut up!" You bark, cowing them yet again. "Elizabeth! What's it looking like outside?"

"Nobody coming yet." Elizabeth says. "But I think now is a good time to figure out an exit plane!"

"Extracting necessary data." Katya updates you.

You consider your options. You could try fighting your way back to the cargo ship and getting out that way. Or, you could try requesting Carly or Bradford to come down directly to the planet to extract you while the other ship distracts the defense forces...

"We'll fight our way back to the cargo ship." You tell Elizabeth. "With all the confusion, I think we can sneak our way through."

"All right." Elizabeth returns her attention to the door. "Katya? How about you?"

"Data update complete." Katya announces. "Query. Would you like me to render the mainframe inoperable? This will guarantee the data within cannot be compromised in the future."

"What's the catch?" You raise an eyebrow, suspecting Katya wouldn't ask you this question without a reason.

"Taking the mainframe offline will result in catastrophic system failure throughout this facility, which will likely result in its destruction."

"Leave it intact." You instruct. "But can't you just, like, scramble or delete the data or something?"

"It would certainly buy time, but this sort of data was not intended to be removed easily." Katya explains. "Our archiving methods were extremely thorough."

"Well, do what you can." You shake you head.

"Affirmative." Katya nods as she removes her palm from the crystal. "We may proceed."

Suddenly, you can feel the ground rumble from a distant explosion. No doubt Tank's doing.

"Guess that's our signal." You say as you holster you pistol. "Let's go!"

The three of you hustle out, but not before Elizabeth shoots out the door panel, locking the scientists inside and preventing them from getting the word out, at least for a little while. The three of you then dash through the halls, alarms ringing in your ears and flashing lights dazzling your eyes.

And then yous see it. Tank's giant armor, wielding its giant rifle, fire haphazardly in all directions and scattering Heg forces in all directions. One guard gets too close and Tank swats him away, splattering against a far wall like a fly.

All the while, though, the giant armor was taking a hail of rail rifle fire from the dozens of Heg troopers surrounding it...

"Come on, let's go!" Elizabeth tugs at your sleeve.

"Elizabeth, you make sure Katya gets back to the ship!" You grunt as you pull out your pistol. "I'm gonna help out Tank."

"But-" Elizabeth shakes her head when she realizes her protest would do no good. "Just be careful."

"Of course! I'm always careful!" You grin.

As Elizabeth manages to spirit Katya away in the confusion, you make your way over to the main battle, where Tank continues unloading heavy firepower into the now entrenched Heg forces that were quickly surrounding him.

Unfortunately, you don't find an opening or an opportunity to turn the tables in Tank's favor. You see a missile from a rocket launcher spiral out of nowhere and slam into Tank's armor. He couldn't take much more of this. He needed to fall back, but that would lead the Heg troops back to the cargo ship, potentially endangering everyone onboard. He could eject and self destruct the suit, but then you'd lose it...

"Tank! Eject and get out of there!" You yell through the comm.

Tank acquiesces to your order. You see the armored suit deploy smoke launchers, shrouding the entire chamber in thick black smoke to break line of sight before presumably bailing out. You then see the bright red flash of the suit's optics pierce the smoke as it charges out, presumably on some kind of autopilot. The gathered Heg forces resume firing, pounding the suit with rifle and rocket fire as the suit finally begins to fall apart.

That's when you feel a large armored hand grab you by the collar and yank you backwards. You turn your head to see that it's Tank, still in his Heg armor disguise. He puts a finger up to his figurative lips and points rapidly towards the docking bay as you hear a MASSIVE explosion behind you, accompanied by shouts and screams.

The two of you quickly stride back to the docking bay, passing by even more Heg troopers and emergency response personnel. However, you do notice that Tank seemed a bit more... lethargic than usual.

"You really miss that suit, huh?" You whisper to him.

Tank nods.

"Sorry about that. I'll be sure to get you a new one sometime." You pat him on the shoulder.

Tank gives you a thumbs up when the both of you finally arrive in the docking bay, where you see Elizabeth in a heated argument with another officer.

"Come on! We're carrying sensitive cargo! We can't afford to be sitting around here under an enemy attack!" Elizabeth shouts.

"I'm sorry, but orders are orders. All docking bays are to be locked down." The officer explains.

The officer gives you a hard stare before his gaze softens just a bit. Maybe you remind him of someone he knows?

"All right, fine." The officer groans. "It takes five minutes to close the docking bay shutters, anyways. Just be sure you get out before then."

"Thank you so much!" You say cheerfully as you skip back to the cargo ship.

"Yeah yeah, just get out of here before I change I mind." The officer shakes his head and walks off.

"All right, everyone, let's go go go!" You snap the moment you get back on the cargo ship.

Of course, nobody needs to be told twice, and they all scramble to get the ship up and moving. The cargo ship lifts off and pulls away on its old and underpowered engines, and from this height, you can see the damage Tank had wrought. Ugly wisps of black smoke rise from sections of the giant saucer, right before they're blown away and dissipated by the high winds. The cargo ship then slowly begins to climb up and out of the atmosphere.

"Aw jeez, looks like the orbital network is a mess." The helmsman frowns. "Guess they're all on alert now. You want us to take it easy, or bug out?"

"Or maybe have our ships stage a diversion to guarantee our escape." Elizabeth suggests.

"We'll just take it easy." You lean back in your temporary Captain's chair and take a deep sigh. "I doubt they'll be looking too closely at us."

"Aye, ma'am." The helmsman nods.

And so the cargo ship putters along through the blockade of Hegemony warships, all them still in a frenzied panic as they try to figure out what's going on down on the ground in their very own base, and if that meant it was a prelude to an actual space engagement.

Fortunately for them, no such engagement would take place. Instead, your little cargo ship glides through space beneath their notice. What could one unarmed freighter possibly do, after all? You manage to reach the jump point and make your escape into FTL.

And that's when you finally take the chance to relax. Sure, you lost that experimental Hegemony battle armor, but you got the data you needed and got out with everybody. That was a good mission in your eyes.

You just hope that whatever Katya got was worth the trouble.
