With the contents of my skull still proving uncooperative I'm unable to run a regular H&D thread. CT Scan is Jan 19 so no thread sooner than that. I don't want to just stay on hiatus for more than a full month so I've decided to go with a world building thread. General Q&A is welcome.

While this is setting development I don't feel up to arguing that on /tg/ right now so sticking to /qst/ for this.

Getting updates done on the wiki is also a priority. I'm considering new tags for some articles. First and foremost is one for ships built out of parts from other ships. Kitbashed fighter designs in Star Wars are (or were) called Uglies. Should H&D ships with similar origins just be called a kitbash, or something more related to salvage?

There was also an anon asking about making a setting timeline with major events. The question with those is always oldest events to newest or newest to oldest?
>>
>>976448
A shame I wont be able to participate in this proper due to the monthly ISP ban that mods spam on me for unclear reasons.

Kitbashed seems like a decent term for them. Or Scrapbuilt.

Also please don't die. We've lost more than enough good QM's this year than I want to.

My brother-in-law has pointed out there is nothing on the wiki about independent Knight Orders.

Knights Errant

Wandering or roving Knights are not excessively common but with so many Houses in the Dominion there are bound to be some who have lost their Houses or been exiled from them. Most of these are referred to collectively as Knights Errant. While some may operate on their own as mercenaries others have been known to form groups of similarly dispossessed Knights.

Orders of such Knights may attempt to recruit prospective officers from the nobility of Houses they are on good terms with. This could be granted in return for their assistance in recent battles or other protection.

>The Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller and so on recruited actively from the second and third sons of nobles to command their ranks.
That would certainly give some options.

I kink these guys need their own wiki article.
>>

>monthly ISP ban
Well that sucks.

It's christmas and I want to buy my QM a videogame. What do you want?

I used to get migraines that wouldn't go at all until I got given a tablet called Cafergot. If your country doesn't stock it like mine, ask your doctor for a prescription you can take to a compounding pharmacy, the mix is 1mg Ergotamine tartrate, 100mg caffeine. The ergotamine narrows blood vessels in a region of the brain and restricts flow, and in most cases this relieves all head pain within 20 minutes. The caffeine is there as a supplement.
>>
>>976448
>The question with those is always oldest events to newest or newest to oldest?

I was hoping to do it newest to oldest, since I had more to work with in terms of thread data.
>>
>>976539
>It's christmas and I want to buy my QM a videogame. What do you want?
I know this has been asked before this month about games or art and I haven't responded.
Part of it is I generally cant think of anything at the time. The other is that I have a "looking the gift horse in the mouth" problem. I do this some times and I piss people off and I don't like that I've done it. I've done it with people doing gift art for H&D because I get autistic over it and I'm really unhappy that I have probably alienated some of them in the process.

Moving on to an actual answer, how about either of the fleet packs for Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak?

>Cafergot
Huh, I've tried to stay away from caffeine if anything simply because things would always get worse once I stopped taking it. I've had migraines since 2004. The ones this year have been much much stronger.

>>976551

We'll see if anyone else comments.

http://houseanddominion.wikia.com/wiki/Knights_Errant
Page is up.

Known Orders:

I'm not sure if we have a name for the fragmented Helscion Ten order that we've supported in allying with Helios. The idea was that this new order would be mostly about fighting enemies of the Dominion. It would also help the Alliance in fighting the Neeran at some level, or at least in recruiting. Knights of the Dominion is all well and good but doesn't seem to make the best name for an order.

>The ancient aliens don't really seem to make sense if it is.
The Lanican or the Neeran? It's still possible for it to work, but I'll admit it does not work very well at present.
>>
>>976596
The Lancians. Having their mildly obsolete ships show up in both universes or at least vastly different parts of one seems like a bit of a stretch. Unless they experimented with a strange kind of ftl that dumped the thousands test vessels all over the multiverse, killed off all crew without a trace, and wiped all data. Which doesn't seem like a reasonable explanation to me.

What I really need is a plot device to keep the Factions home fleets from fighting one another from 2951 through the Expeditionary wars up until the Faction Wars. Or at least as little as possible.
The Expeditionary wars are supposed to be mostly colony fleets out there trying to explore and settle planets faster than the others. Your standard 4X stuff.

I could retcon a lot of stuff pre-Exodus if I could find a program that let me look at the nearest galaxies and galaxy clusters. Calculate distances, things of that nature and figure out how a Nav relay network would work in our universe. It's much easier when you can just make up the intergalactic topography.

>>976606
That's fair. I was thinking no more than 10 of their ships may have been found and even then they'd be in rough shape. Crash landed, exposed to atmosphere, whatever. I could just restrict them all to pre-exodus discoveries which might be easier.
>>
>>976581
>Moving on to an actual answer, how about either of the fleet packs for Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak?
Steam name?

>That works. Ideas for page tags?
I had several ideas for the timeline, based on the way other wikis do it, but the one with the most promise in my opinion, is to split it up in centuries.

Based on >>976625, we'd have a page for 3500-3599, and under that page we'd have monthly headings, then exact days of events with all the relevant data, a page for 3600-3699, but then we'd skip forward to 4000 since there doesn't really seem to be much going on between 3700 and 4000. There'd also be a master timeline page with links to all the century.

Tags could be Century for a century period on the timeline, Year for a page describing a particularly active year, and then Event for anything important.
>>
>>976606
Maybe they were less risk averse as a species resulting in them having a lot more ships end up the way of the early FTL ships that went missing.
>>
>>976625
>plot device to keep the Factions home fleets from fighting one another from 2951 through the Expeditionary wars up until the Faction Wars

Space cold war caused by easily available ftl kill vehicles before sufficiently strong planetary shields were possible?

>I could just restrict them all to pre-exodus discoveries
Maybe something similar to the FTL drive on the best ship in cataclysm? They got stuck between the stars while testing new technologies, and only crash landed after several thousand years?

>>976654
That could work as well.
>>
>>976695
>Maybe something similar to the FTL drive on the best ship in cataclysm? They got stuck between the stars while testing new technologies, and only crash landed after several thousand years?
Failed prototype wormhole drive or other advanced FTL system?
>>
>>976756
What about instead of fully going into hyperspace like faction ships do they tried to 'slingshot' around it for a much greater boost in range and less energy required, but far, far less control and accuracy? Would explain why the ships are so scattered, and the lower technology at work meant they didn't have the power necessary to fully dive into hyperspace.
>>
>>976756
A prototype system that used quantum entanglement to construct nanites at some distant location which built ships in turn if sufficient resources were available and then self destructed. The species never managed to figure out how to build wormhole receivers while pursuing that avenue of research, and they eventually abandoned the idea while several of their ships ended up in far off locations? No idea if that makes sense with H&D science.

>Failed prototype wormhole drive or other advanced FTL system?
Both would probably make sense. Or they tried to power through gravity wells by cranking up drive power.
>>
>>976644
>I had several ideas for the timeline, based on the way other wikis do it, but the one with the most promise in my opinion, is to split it up in centuries.

Sounds like it should work.

I'd been archiving my old hard copy stuff by Era.
-Dawn of the Republic
-Human-Kavarian War
-First contact with the Dominion / related conflicts
-Faction Wars
-Neeran Wars
-Twilight Era (defunct)

But that was before I started to retcon stuff for H&D.

>>976793
>instead of fully going into hyperspace like faction ships do they tried to 'slingshot' around it for a much greater boost in range
I'm not sure how well that would work. If they didn't enter subspace then the ship would still have to obey the real space limit on the speed of light. Maybe I'm just picturing it wrong.

>>976794
>Or they tried to power through gravity wells by cranking up drive power.
That would be a good way to crush nearly everything aboard. Crew, computers you name it. The ship might survive, or at least the parts made of Tritanium.
>>
>>976929
>crush everybody
They tried to avoid that with subspace shenanigans which caused their ships to end up everywhere?

What if they just fucked up their subspace drive design and it flung them around everywhere randomly?

I meant it more that it could be a good thing and work well in terms of how the ships were found.

>Q&A
With relatively few habitable planets available in H&D, and the large number of star systems rich in resources that can be easily reached by ftl travel, why aren't the more systems filled with hab stations and hydroponics satellites?

With the tech level of Sonia's era, aggresive expansion seems like a waste of resources as long as there are still planets around you can strip mine for ships or stations in more desirable locations.
>>
>>977598
Back when H&D started TSTG wasn't as deep into the tech as he is now.

>hab stations and hydroponics satellites?
I've considered that since early on and the answer is that I've chosen not mention plenty of stuff that might be present in these other systems. Space is big and there's tons of the civilian economy that you guys just don't interact with.
There may be lots of stuff there, or there may not be. I've left it open so that either option can be used as needed. A bank canvas if you will.

I will say that small outposts do tend to be present in a lot of systems that have been prospected and found to be rich in natural resources. This is mostly so the House claiming it can keep tabs on the area for illegal mining operations. Most such outposts are automated and may just have a simple sensor array and com system. Manned science outposts do exist and tend to be used for long term projects.

The Smuggler's Run is really about the only place you've spent enough time to encounter more of this stuff, but at the same time the local infrastructure had been ravaged by repeated pirate raids. You were less likely to see fragile habitats.

With modular stations it's also easier to set up portable temporary mining operations. If things get a little too hot they pack up and leave.

>>
>>977904
It would be rather trivial to use the Journeyman as a makeshift carrier by having fighters land on the flat upper part.
It would be rather slow to get the fighters back onto the carrier quickly so it would probably function better as a drone carrier that treated the fighters as disposable.

It would be easiest to use a cargo module the size of the top deck packed full of drones that could be swapped out. Not really recommended for transporting manned fighters.
>>
>>978026
>There are some in-between sizes that are not on here.
Has anyone made a superfreighter yet?

Something the size of a big heavy, for ultimate hauling.
>>
>>978060
There are the Medium cruiser sized transports built in South Reach that that SRL used as the starting point for the Sledge class. Anybody can buy them they just need to put up the money and hope that the manufacturer doesn't run off with it.
Kilo class mediums are capable of serving in a transport role. Because of this they're sometimes used as convoy escorts.

The old Jupiter class Heavy Transport aren't built anymore but people keep getting their hands on them.

The Ceres giant asteroid Tug or Heavy asteroid Tug (however you want to call it) can probably handle the largest payloads. What they can't do is jump very long distances when carrying their max load.

Lastly the newer Cygni class Heavy Transport which can carry as much or more than the Senate class Heavy Carrier. The Terrans keep their Cygni class ships very well protected.
>>
>>978117
I guess it's not economically feasible to run superfreighters when there's other ships available?

Economies of scale apply.
My guess is that the risk of losing jump access has made systems more self sufficient lessening the usefulness of trading high volume low value goods that would benefit from truly massive ships.
It would have a massive upfront cost and low profit margins due to high volume items being common.
Might be viable for extreme long range trading at Factions Alliance scale and beyond.
A single faction almost certainly does not have enough fluctuation to necessitate such a transport and even the Factions Alliance might be too small to truly benefit from them.
>>

>Breakthrough soon*.
I just noticed the star. It's snowball guns isn't it?

http://houseanddominion.wikia.com/wiki/Willow_Class

>My ideal ship would be a smaller ~250 meter version with a frontal 120 degree phase cannon instead of a spinal heavy.
Spinal mount weapons have better shield penetration.
The Willow was supposed to be much smaller until I actually tried to fit one of the cannons in the configuration I'd come up with. Very much a not as planned moment.
>>
>>981090
If you took out all the drive equipment and made a 'drone turret', how small could you make the Willow? Almost like a satellite that could be launched from a carrier to do damage, or as something for orbital defense.
>>
>>981090
>Spinal mount weapons have better shield penetration.
Sure but my ideal corvette wouldn't really be designed to be punching above its weight class but rather engage other corvettes and fighters while being small enough to get inside the shield bubble of a medium cruiser.
If I wanted a corvette capable of taking on cruisers or battleships I'd mount a pair of torpedo launchers on it and have them play wolfpack.

>>
>>981382
Neat. Seems that Phase Cannons are getting smaller and smaller.

Anything interesting happening with Dominion Plasma research recently? I remember they went to Sonia for direction input at one point.
>>
>>981212
Your best bet might actually be the Neeran corvette. The plasma cannon does have a 60 degree field of fire, 90 degree if you're willing to accept a drop in damage output.

Replacing the plasma cannon with a heavy phase cannon turret with a wider field of fire can work but you'd need to replace some of the fuel stores with power systems. It won't do as much damage as the phased plasma cannon it replaces but would be easier to build and maintain.

Another possibility would be to take the old Firestorm Frigate and scale it down a bit. The quad linked main weapon would be replaced with the single turret. I don't think it would work with a single high maneuver drive. Smaller custom built engines would work. Or maybe the smaller drives from older Frigates upgraded.
>>
>>981658
It would still require missile banks and point defense like in the Willow. The spheroid would also make it harder to fit it inside shield bubbles compared to a longer but narrower design.
What about replacing the spinal heavy phase cannon with a pulse turret?
>>
>>981683
Also I'd like to clarify that the single thruster was part of what is endearing about the Willow for me. Sure it has the drawback of having no redundancy but the fact that you can get heavier armour on the main engine and less fuel lines, cooling, control and who knows what else has to be made on a per thruster basis that appeals to me.

Yussss!

>General questions:
Are artificial orbital ring stations economically efficient in H&D?
Is there a direct connection between Terran and Rovinar space?
Are there any sentient acquatic species around? With the Dro'all preferring large oceans on their planets, there should be lots of real estate beneath the waves if we can find somebody who's willing to live there.
Do both Neeran factions avoid planets entirely, or are there smaller groups that still colonize planets?
Is the occupation of Kavarian space plannet to continue indefinitely?
Basic H&D shields are supposed to project in bubble shape, right? Why are the Neeran the only species to deploy spheroid ship designs to maximize the ship space protected by the shield?
More information on the Kavarian Union would be nice.

>>983332
>If you had another project in mind though they could start on that.
Just throwing random ideas around:
+Pico heavy planetary assault / planetary strong point modification. (repulsor based drives so it doesn't screw up the ecosystem, planetary shields, landing pads on the deck, lifts and those repulsor systems Sonia captured on the bottom, and defensive weapons on the sides, probably no FTL. The ship seems suitable for because of its shape and the fact that many weapons are mounted on the sides.)
+LST or Scarab torpedo boat modification (heavy? torpedoes with shorter burn stages, ship focuses on speed and lots of stealth)
+An actual Dominion designed torpedo bomber
+Downsized Kavarian AC, cut down the main body so you end up with something like the Imperial DD from LoGH.
+The medium cruiser with a siege cannon the Helios ambassador suggested (make sure it can use 2 heavy plasma cannons that are supposed ot require as much space as one siege cannon, to make sure we can sell them to the Alliance)
+A indigenous Dominion mass production and low budget Medium Cruiser
+A medium plasma cannon module for the spinal large module slot on the Lance
+A module based on the Aries advanced torpedo battery for the spinal slot on the Lance

One possibility for research would be a "drop in" style fuel cell engine that you could replace an existing fusion reactor with. >>General questions:
>Are artificial orbital ring stations economically efficient in H&D?
If you mean a single space station that encircles an entire planet like the Ring of Iron around Mars in Warhammer 40k, then no.
There are very large space stations like skyhooks as well as surface structures that extend into orbit, but they don't get that big.

>Is there a direct connection between Terran and Rovinar space?
About as direct as between our own Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy, though maybe a little farther.

>Are there any sentient acquatic species around?
Almost certainly.
>With the Dro'all preferring large oceans on their planets, there should be lots of real estate beneath the waves if we can find somebody who's willing to live there.
Worth a shot.

>Do both Neeran factions avoid planets entirely, or are there smaller groups that still colonize planets?
They prefer not to live on planets as they can create environments of their choosing aboard their larger ships. As with any group of people not all of them feel the same about that.

>Is the occupation of Kavarian space plannet to continue indefinitely?
The Terrans, Republic and Rovinar long ago scaled back their occupation to strategic facilities that could pose a threat to them within a limited period of time. Their real sanctions merely caused Iratar to block production or development of certain types of vehicles, weapons and technology. Those sanctions have now been lifted entirely.

Most of the facilities that were occupied are now under Alliance control to some extent. Iratar is very happy with this arrangement.

>Basic H&D shields are supposed to project in bubble shape, right? Why are the Neeran the only species to deploy spheroid ship designs to maximize the ship space protected by the shield?
Older Kavarian star cruisers were a bit more spheroid. Their thrust to weight ratio was also shit. Making a more spheroid ship means it's probably going to be more massive. That might be a good thing if you're building a Battleship.
So it's a trade off between shield efficiency and mass/propulsion. The Terrans decided they didn't like those options and developed contour shields.

>More information on the Kavarian Union would be nice.
They survived for 25 years. Stole advanced technology from everybody and in that time managed to cause more problems for the Factions than anyone before or since.
They used the centuries long occupation and repression of the Kavarian people as justification for the rapid expansion of their military strength.
Some powerful people in their very young government decided; "There's a point where we needed to stop and we've clearly passed it. Let's keep going and see what happens!"
>>

>+Pico heavy planetary assault / planetary strong point modification
Planetary Occupation Platform? A similar version based off the Barge hull could work too. I could see this working and more importantly getting funding.

>+LST or Scarab torpedo boat modification (heavy? torpedoes with shorter burn stages, ship focuses on speed and lots of stealth)
There are already Scarab refit packages that basically turn them into the Turanic Raider missile corvette. A torpedo modification would work too. Torpedo racks mean shorter effective range than launchers.

>+An actual Dominion designed torpedo bomber
Manned?
http://houseanddominion.wikia.com/wiki/Z5Z_Starfighter

You could also modify the Z5X drone fighter into a manned model, though it would mean losing one or both of the full sized particle beams. This would be well within the capability of your R&D team.

>+Downsized Kavarian AC, cut down the main body so you end up with something like the Imperial DD from LoGH.
That's an idea. Missile and torpedo racks. Less phase cannon and torp launchers.

>+The medium cruiser with a siege cannon the Helios ambassador suggested (make sure it can use 2 heavy plasma cannons that are supposed to require as much space as one siege cannon, to make sure we can sell them to the Alliance)
Sorry, that was a one or the other deal. Good thinking though.

>+A indigenous Dominion mass production and low budget Medium Cruiser
Eminence II.
All of the new medium cruisers everyone is developing are expensive because of the new upgraded tech going into them. A low budget Medium is possible but its performance is going to be shit all around.
I guess you could go with very light weight construction, minimal armor. A salvage/scrap built Eminence II could be quite fast. It wouldn't be able to take many hits.

>+A medium plasma cannon module for the spinal large module slot on the Lance
It's too big for that hardpoint and would have to be offset a bit like the modern upgrade modules are. So yes it's possible.

>+A module based on the Aries advanced torpedo battery for the spinal slot on the Lance
That might almost work. The result would look a bit like this.

As I've ruled that antimatter reacts with shields the same as it would a physical wall I don't know if that would be best. Emergency backup shielding though, that could be useful.

Viable R&D projects (so far) that your team are capable of.

Planetary Occupation Platform A (Alpha strike model. Pico Medium Hull. + Iratar support)
Planetary Occupation Platform B (Barge. More mobility between systems. +CCD Support)
Eminence II Light weight / Scrap built
Downsized Kavarian AC/Missile Destroyer
Lance upgrade module, Medium plasma cannon
Lance/Aries torpedo battery modification (Permanant upgrade)
Z5X Manned Bomber model
Z10 Avenger development support. (They won't be able to do this on their own but it would help move the project along.)

Torpedo armor isn't a project your team is suited to unfortunately. They're best at modifying existing hull designs.

>As I've ruled that antimatter reacts with shields the same as it would a physical wall I don't know if that would be best.
All I saw of the talk was you mentioning you hadn't thought about it and that since the shield isn't actually made of matter it wouldn't react with it.
Anyways I'm in favour of
>Lance upgrade module, Medium plasma cannon
Because it means we get to move more plasma cannons and the targets you'd use the cannon on wouldn't exactly be nimble enough to dodge so being spinal doesn't matter.
>>
>>985637
>[x] Planetary Occupation Platform A (Alpha strike model. Pico Medium Hull. + Iratar support)

This is a tough one. I like all of these options but when it comes down to it, all our ships that we've made so far have been to fill niche roles or something that's not yet been done before.

The occupation platforms are an interesting concept too, just put it in orbit to support an invasion/army. They could sell really well for two reasons:
1) The Dominion Civil War. There's already a lot of territory changing hands and I bet we could start selling these immediately during and after the war, and it would provide a longer-term boost to stability once the fighting has died down.
2) The Neeran war. Shallan space is going to have to be retaken eventually and using Platforms to support invading armies frees up mainline combat ships.

>>985695
I'm a little hesitant to go for the lance class upgrades since it's primarily a Terran design and it'll be harder to sell to our own/allied houses. Think we'd be better off looking at a Medium Plasma upgrade for the Shukant. We've also got Shallan Mk.2 Mediums coming along eventually and it'd simply be more competition.
>>
>>985713
Good point. I retract my vote and support
>[x] Planetary Occupation Platform A (Alpha strike model. Pico Medium Hull. + Iratar support)
It should also be possible to mount an excessive amount of fighter grade weaponry to wear down planetary shields without breaking any treaties. We've traditionally used mass drivers for this but dedicated siege ships would require a less resource intensive source that is already in production: Fighter energy weapons are the answer.
>>
>>985637
Would all of them require the same amount of time?
(We should buy more research slots.)
>>
>>983548
And I manged to forget some stuff...

>Q&A

>>
>>985576
>Sorry, that was a one or the other deal. Good thinking though.
That's unfortunate, the ship even had a drawing. Have you considered a special research slot for things like this? Instead of only throwing money at a project, Sonia has to lower the timer before she can unlock a new research item it through influence or by meeting other conditions and it can't go below a certain number (12 or 24 months?).

>>986530
>>Design
>Twin-linked phase siege cannons.
To expand on that idea, twin linked micro and light phase cannons could be very useful as well. The former would help fighters do at least some damage against shielded ships, while the latter could make a design like the LoGH destroyer feasible in H&D. Going purely by the number of cannons on the LoGH design, 52 light phase cannons twin linked for improved shield penetration should pose a threat to many ships, simply because some of the shots should make it through the shields sooner rather than later.

>Other idea
Would the nanites currently under research make highly modular shipyards possible? The idea would be to design a construction facility that can build starfighter sized vessels on its own, LSTs sized stuff if you combine two, corvettes if you take four etc. It would very likely be less efficient than dedicated shipyards but would allow for more flexibilty as you can break down your medium cruiser shipyard back into multiple corvette production yards and vice versa if you need more of one ship type asap.
>>
We could have the lab start researching the Eclipse Mk. 2 because the shukhant doesn't really do it for me.
>>
>>986530
>How far has the guild explored in the other direction, and what's there?
They've actually explored a bit in all the other directions. They haven't asked for support from the factions to expand the relay network because the political situation was not the greatest for a combined effort. And if it wasn't a combined effort there'd be complaining about it for centuries.
As for what's out there that could easily be the basis of several trek style missions of exploration. You know, back when trek explored shit.

>Twin-linked phase siege cannons.
With a siege weapon it'd be more like 16-20 linked. You can commission one from Helios, they still do custom weapon orders.

>>986991
>Eclipse Mk. 2

>Eclipse Mk. 2
Hell yeah. How's the design going anyway? Anything we can roll for/choose?
>>
>>986204
>Would all of them require the same amount of time?
No. The Z10 is too much to complete on your own in a reasonable period of time so it'd be the longest.
Downsized Kavarian AC/Missile Destroyer would probably be second longest since it's more or less designing a new ship.

Planetary Occupation Platform B (Barge. More mobility between systems. +CCD Support)
Planetary Occupation Platform A (Alpha strike model. Pico Medium Hull. + Iratar support)
Lance/Aries torpedo battery modification (Permanent upgrade)
Z5X Manned Bomber model
Eminence II Light weight / Scrap built
Lance upgrade module, Medium plasma cannon

Longest research at the top shortest at the bottom. If done on your own. You can probably get outside support if you're willing to on the Occupation Platforms.

I just had a crazy idea - why not House Che'len? Fadila probably knows lots of reasons why not.
- They're neutral in the Dominion civil war, so there should be less problems to get Alliance funding.
- They're most likely desperate for funding right now.
- They probably still have the research infrastructure of a large house, while most likely lacking the funds to do much with it atm.
- Even if/when they end up as a middle House, it can't hurt to have decent relations with them.
>>

>twin linked micro and light phase cannons
Starfighter grade weapons won't work properly they're the wrong type. You need ball turret/array type for it to work.

>52 light phase cannons twin linked
4 sets on a large Frigate/destroyer would be pushing it, even light versions. The Dusk II is an attack cruiser. It can mount 2 sets of twin linked phase cannon. The Firestorm II Frigate also has 2 but those are its only weapons. On a smaller ship primarily dedicated to missiles and torps 2 light twin linked ones would be about it.

Now if a spinal compatible version were developed it might be better for what you're thinking, but it wouldn't be able to shift its field of fire even the small amount that regular spinal mount phase cannons can.
Such weapons would be rather bulky. I'll try to figure out what House if any would already be working on such a project.

>Would the nanites currently under research make highly modular shipyards possible?
>build starfighter sized vessels on its own, LSTs sized stuff if you combine two, corvettes if you take four etc. It would very likely be less efficient than dedicated shipyards but would allow for more flexibilty as you can break down your medium cruiser shipyard back into multiple corvette production yards and vice versa if you need more of one ship type asap.
It's a good idea. You wouldn't need offensive nanites resistant to phase weaponry in order to build them. I don't know if this would be ideal for the Dominion but it would be great for Alliance mobile fleet bases.

I have to go, my old man insists on taking me to see Rogue One.

>>987186

>>987085
>Lance/Aries torpedo battery modification (Permanent upgrade)
This could be a highly profitable upgrade if we refit Terran ships in Dominoin space because Aries probably still holds the copyright for that torpedo battery in Terran territory. We should probably have some lawyers look into it, to see if the Terrans would be able to have their ships refit by us without running into too much legal trouble

On Rogue One, no spoilers.
Not bad, certainly better than that disaster the Force Awakens was. Doesn't have its problem with the actors. With the FA actors it felt like they were pretending they were in a Star Wars movie. This one felt like an actual movie with actors, not people who showed up for a multi-million dollar LARP.
Writing was decent overall. A few minor tweaks to the ending would have made it well above average.

The story seems to have been a mashup of 3-4 SW EU stories I've read about the theft of the death star plans. Since all of those stories ended pretty much the same way I'll say that the movie's ending wasn't really surprising.

>Since I paid for the movie you can shovel the driveway.
Well at least I got some exercise today.

It's entirely dependent upon how stable my work/financial situation stays and my health. These blasted headaches the past 2 months have made it difficult to progress.
After this raiding campaign I'm going to have to take some steps to shorten the overall length of the civil war from a written perspective. There will have to be time skips both in the Civil War and after.
I have the framework ready for the Dyson Sphere expedition and most of the general set up for the final leg of the Neeran War.

>I'm going to be very sad when it ends.
I've had a number of ideas for short quests in the same setting. I feel they would be more exciting than H&D has gotten.

Due to necessary long term planning I'd like a general idea of what way you guys are expecting to go once the Civil War is over.

Did Shallan space fall entirely in the original time line where the SRL and faction fleets were destroyed and the republic homeworld got nuked? And did the civil war happen sooner?
>>
>[ ] Wizard recovery
Counts as dyson sphere trip.

Setting spoilers below.

>>988369
Things worked out differently but ultimately similar goals were attained.
Overall you're doing better. Less of Shallan space is occupied. Their military while stronger overall has slightly less control over their civilian population. This may make it easier for the other factions to request a restoration of the civilian government at a later time.

The final standoff between the Factions and Warlords was supposed to be elsewhere and with different numbers. The Kavarian Protectorate forces from Watcher space would have made contact sooner. They would have provided more clone troops to make up the gap from losses incurred.

If the Republic had suffered an attack on one of their core worlds it would have shocked the Neeran Isolationists in much the same way Pearl Harbor shocked the US civilian pop. The balance would be maintained but for different reasons.

>And did the civil war happen sooner?
Part of the problem is that when I originally did the run through of events in the war I didn't focus on the Dominion very much at all. It was very underdeveloped. Most of the characters earlier stories followed were people who joined the Alliance through the training programs the PCCG set up. There was only 1 pilot in the unit from the Dominion and they were an outcast.

I knew going into H&D that overall their technology would reduce the Dominion's effectiveness in fighting the Neeran.
There was going to be infighting between the Houses to some extent that kept them from contributing more. As I developed the Dominion over the course of the quest I realized "holy shit, all of these Houses can still throw around a fuck ton of ships."
So it needed to become a full blown civil war to keep things more in line with other elements I'd written.
There was no firm date on when it happened, but it would have to have happened in the background at some point.

>What were they about?
Republic Civil War
There's a post where I did a better job of explaining why it started but here's the gist of it.
Republic one started due to attempts to change voting laws, representation of the populace and requirements for entry into the Senate. (That part may have started as an attempt to remove corrupt elements of the government.)
Whole sections of the Republic refused and things started to get out of control, though it took a few years to snowball into open conflict. Once fighting actually broke out between the central government and outlying areas the situation went to shit fast. Much of the eastern territories went neutral and piracy went through the roof.

The Rebel or Silver Aquila forces quickly organised around one of the major shipyards and produced a bunch of new stop gap cruiser designs with longer plasma cannon range. The Government or Golden Eagle forces wasted years trying to shore up their position around the capital and things ground down into a stalemate.
Both sides were playing whack a mole and taking out facilities that could produce advanced tech the other might make use of. Newer Attack bombers and plasma pistols are good examples. Because of that it took them quite awhile to restart those programs.

The Factions Alliance and some of the Neeran Isolationists initiated a plan to increase the apparent threat posed by the South Reach League and piracy in general inside Republic space. Had you taken said mission it would have been your job to raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer your weasely black guts out.
Meanwhile diplomats would try to broker a peace settlement between the two sides.
>>
>>990490
The Terran Civil War came about from an attempt to end the conflicts between the Factions and create a new superstate. The head of the Dominion's Ruling House would act as the Emperor of a constitutional monarchy.
The majority of the Terran expeditionary fleets refused to take part in this and formed the Terran Alliance of Confederated Systems.

The Government forces, the Terran Federal Alliance, accused the expeditionary forces of treason and fought against them with support from the Dominion's Ruling House.

The Terran Rebels won, the Dominion imploded (again), and the Kavarians took the opportunity to rise up destroying dozens of Houses in the process.

I'm certain that it was shown in a thread some time ago. maybe longer.
there was this picture... about the best description of it would be that the shield is made of many tiny blue cones pointing inward. weapon can go out because it can weave throug the gap. weapon cannot go in because it slams on a surface. something like that.

Unquestionable devotion to the Emperor and the Electors no doubt. I mean clearly the HRE was THE most stable nation in all of Human history. Speaking of the HRE. Is it just a coincidence that there are seven large houses in the Dominion and one Emperor to match the HRE's seven Electors and one Emperor?

That is actually a coincidence. I knew shit all about the HRE and still don't know anywhere near as much as I'd like.
It's a nice number though and a seven pointed star isn't something you see all that often.

There have been so many things I've done or written then found out later, oh hey these other people did that first. Often years, decades or centuries ago.

So eve online-like logi would only work by a ship projecting a shield far away from itself?

Has there been research into support ships like that? Are they a thing?
>>
>>998468
Shield platforms are meant to do this above sections of colonies. You and some of your enemies have used them to protect super heavy cruisers in larger fleet battles.

They would not work as well protecting more mobile ship assets. Unless the shield were just used as a strong point for corvettes to duck behind on occasion.

Are there any HLVs equipped with shields that can cover a small area around it? You could land an invasion force, take a beating on the shields from ground defenders and still drop off the cargo unharmed.

I would expect vertical storage systems for heavy equipment, emergency ramps every couple of floors, lots of armor on the bottom, and expendable systems and facilities just behind the outer hull. Putting the command deck so close to the outer hull seems questionable if these ships are supposed to see combat drops.

I'd also expect them to be ridiculously tough, as you can easily stuff a medium cruiser worth of equipment and soldiers into one of these.

Rolled 2 (1d100)

Was hoping to post a lot more today but I got called into work.

>>1001901
>>1002409
Now I remember, they tried doing something like this with the droids in the Phantom Menace. Didn't really look like it was worth the trouble for them.
With a larger space faring vehicle I think it would work a little better. Some of the internal diagrams of the Dolos Carrier from Gundam used a similar system for the mobile suits.

>>1001812
>emergency ramps every couple of floors
There would have to be alternate ways down if the system jammed. The backups should be more like underground parking garage. Now I'm getting a general idea how to do this.

I wonder if the lifts should be able to extend down to ground level once the ship lands?

>>1002429
Most HLV's are equipped with particle beams for point defense and suppression of enemy ground vehicles. Smaller missile batteries would be much of a stretch though.

>>1002227
It was here. It requires a ship to perform a 90 degree course change off of a high speed FTL lane. That is the only safe approach to the area. If you change course too early or too late you'll probably hit a navigation hazard.

>>1002533
Some ships.
>production license for the neeran fast medium cruiser
Rolling to see how much of that data they have.

>>1002611
Not quite that good.
>>
>>1003166
>It requires a ship to perform a 90 degree course change off of a high speed FTL lane.
Wouldn't that make it ideal as a test area for one of those nav guild deep space gravity well stations that were proposed a while ago? Ships could stop at the station to make the turn, and it would also reduce the drive requirements to make the regular jump.

>Rolling to see how much of that data they have.
>Rolled 2 (1d100)
Ouch. What other ships do they have?

Also, how well do E-beams work as planetary defence weapons? If I remember correctly, they don't cause the same problems as phase cannons when used in atmosphere.
>>
>>1003204
And I forgot: would it be possible to investigate if jump routes to either drh 1 or 2 from the srl territory are possible?
>>
>>1003204
>What other ships do they have?
Mostly older ones the Neeran have now started to replace with more compact models.

Corvettes
Battlecruisers
Battleships
Most models of transports
Heavy Cruisers
Heavy Transport & Heavy Carrier based off it.
Some of their stations

Data from these have all contributed to the development and upgrades of newer Faction warships.
>>
>>1003321
Is it possible to add the 'phased' attribute to dominion plasma cannons?

>Heavy Carrier based off it.
Is that the same class as Qlippoth?
>>
>>1003204
>Wouldn't that make it ideal as a test area for one of those nav guild deep space gravity well stations that were proposed a while ago?
The Navigators and Alliance doesn't exactly publicize where they do advanced technology tests these days. It would be an ideal location for deployment once such systems are fully operational. The South Reach League is also aware of this.

>how well do E-beams work as planetary defence weapons?
They're not great for a planet's ozone layer. Other than that while they won't cause tons of damage to surrounding areas they do suffer from the usual problems of firing beam weapons through atmosphere. They degrade in efficiency.

There are ways around this, like dedicated repulsors to punch through the atmosphere.

>>1003209
DRH 2 maybe, but DRH 1 is too far away.
Since DRH3 is considered to be part of the larger South Reach cluster it's not a high priority. But yeah, may be possible for another connection to DRH 2.

>>1003329
>phased plasma weapons
Not yet. It's proving difficult to develop Faction phased plasma weapons. Simply making copies of Neeran weapons with captured production lines isn't enough.

It's expected that it should be possible to upgrade the Iratar Siege guns once the tech is working properly. No signs that it will work with Republic plasma weapons which most dominion guns are based off of.

>Is that the same class as Qlippoth?
Yes.
>>
This is a pretty general question but how's Rioja doing? How's the Terraforming? Did they ever find any native plant life?
>>
>>1003390
Thanks.

>Yes.
Would it make sense to offer to refit those the FA salvages for faction use? J-D already has some experience with that, maybe they could gain some additional FA investment for a dedicated facility once the civil war is over?

>But yeah, may be possible for another connection to DRH 2.
Interesting, a route from DRH 2 might work without dangerous course changes, and could enable older ships to make the journey without the need for that specialized station. Probably worth looking into at some point.

>No signs that it will work with Republic plasma weapons which most dominion guns are based off of.
Does Sonia still have a team working on SP plasma cannon ammo?

>World building
I'd be interested in more information about the early republic. Who were the guys the isolationist Neeran helped exterminate or drive into hiding?
Also the war with the Norune that cost the Hune their homeworld, is that super weapon still hidden somehwere?

>Shouldn't these have been catalogued before the first terraforming began?
This is the second time Rioja has been terraformed. If there was any native plant life it's long gone by now.

Terraforming efforts are going well but faster than the more experienced crews feel is safe. The sudden and rapid expansions of cities and industrial centers on planet has radically altered where atmospheric processors are seeing use.
Weather patterns are expected to fluctuate more wildly than original plans anticipated. Rates of seeding plant life to reduce erosion are being stepped up in places to compensate.

It will finish sooner thanks to the improved tech but people will still need to work harder.

>Would it make sense to offer to refit those the FA salvages for faction use?
Actually the House performed the refit as a proof of concept in the hopes of doing just that. With the civil war on the Alliance can't risk sending ships to J-D space to be refit so the Count has sold the Alliance the refit data.
>dedicated facility once the civil war is over?
They've promised to contract J-D refits of two ships at a later time.

>Does Sonia still have a team working on SP plasma cannon ammo?
They've completed a charged particle beam that fires shield piercing ammo. It can be fitted to the Dante gunship. It requires breaking up 1 SP Torpedo for 1 combat deployment's worth of ammo.
They can also make ammo for your plasma Pistol, though if you actually need to use it you're in more trouble than your pistol will get you out of.

Right now they're mainly doing theoretical work on the plasma cannon problem figuring out how not to use 100 torpedoes worth of material for a ship grade plasma weapon shot. Not a lot of progress on that front.

>Who were the guys the isolationist Neeran helped exterminate
They were basically a race of space porcupine people. No I'm not making that up. I spent a grand total of 1 day on that story arc.

>is that super weapon still hidden somehwere?
The Norune are making some claims that their ancestors supposedly destroyed all knowledge of it, but that they're looking at reproducing it. So who knows at this point.

>>1003452
Question 1, you will find out probably if I can get back to running regular games.
Question 2, that could be one way of ending the quest. Weather you do it intentionally is another story.
>>
>>1003621
>The Norune are making some claims that their ancestors supposedly destroyed all knowledge of it
This is a less embarassing version of: "We hid it but kinda forgot where?", right?

>If there was any native plant life it's long gone by now.

>They've completed a charged particle beam that fires shield piercing ammo. It can be fitted to the Dante gunship. It requires breaking up 1 SP Torpedo for 1 combat deployment's worth of ammo.
That seems pretty useful.

>space porcupine people
I didn't expect that.

>that could be one way of ending the quest
My guess was if Sonia makes it through the Neeran war, she'd quickly grow tired of Dominion politicking and either set out into the great unknown, use the warp gate to shuffle off into a different universe, or simply freeze herself until things become less silly. Or maybe have her brain transplanted into a shark.
>>
>>1003621
>This is the second time Rioja has been terraformed. If there was any native plant life it's long gone by now.
Sorry, should have been more specific.

When we were discussing Rioja a while ago, I wanted to get plant life in to start making Rioja brand alcohol as gifts for people. I asked if there was any native life and you mentioned the Terraforming crews would search for old native plant life or an approximation of what was there if they could find anything on the history.

>>

>Are the Terrans still making Democratic problems?
The Terrans will always make those kinds of problems, but the situation is much more stable than it was.

>Are the Shallan happy?
Happy enough all things considered. Quality of life for the refugees has greatly improved.

There continues to be much talk about the military government back in Shallan space. It's not an easy issue to resolve. Some are calling for protests outside recruitment centers operated by supporters of the new government, others think such acts should be considered treason.

Given their position in the military Mezan is not allowed to have a public opinion on the matter.
That she asked you to move family members out of Shallan space before the coup should be a good indicator of her faith in a military government.
