It is a beautiful late spring morning outside. Flowers are in bloom and the harsh chill of the New England winter is only a memory at this point in the season. Naturally, that's not really on your mind right now. With the end of the semester only a week away and your final projects all finished and submitted, you can finally relax and get back to doing what you love. You close the blinds of your apartment, toss the paper plate from your breakfast burrito in the trash, and settle down into your computer chair. Despite having occupied it for at least thirty hours in the past week, you feel a comfort wash over you that you thought you had forgotten. After a hellish week of forcing yourself to abstain until every last page was typed, you finally click the familiar icon on your desktop.

It feels so good to boot it up again that the opening menu's tune is quite literally music to your ears. Entering your account details brings you to the character select screen. Your character looks back at you expectantly, if you didn't know it was a programmed pose, you would almost think he had been waiting just as eagerly as you were. You press enter and are greeted by a loading screen. Contrary to your usual opinion of it, even this short wait feels pleasant.

After the loading finishes, you take a second to soak in the atmosphere, or at least as much as you can get through a computer screen. As fresh as today may feel to you, the majority of the other players seem to be going on with the daily grind. It's only natural considering the expansion coming in a month. The streets are filled with adventurers, some are grinding their subclasses, some mill about the guild house shouting trade offers to make some extra money for those sweet new expansion items.

Looking through your friend's list, it looks like your little brother, your best friend, a guy you know from high school, two of your old guild mates, and dozens of other people you have played with over the years are on as well. Judging by the locations under your their names, despite the mass of players here in town, there is probably at least twice that out raiding. Everyone who isn't already capped is making a mad rush to milk every available hour for exp before the expansion comes, while everyone who is is raiding to grab top notch equipment, either for themselves or to sell to the influx of new 90s. All in all, it's surprisingly busy today; looks like the unusually early hours and possibly looming finals aren't deterring anyone else either.

You figure that you shouldn’t let time go to waste either, so you gear up and start heading towards the Frozen Fortress. It’s about a 10 minute ride away from town, and the road there has some mobs like Freezing Slimes and Silver Fangs, but they are too weak to really bother you since you are nearly level 73 now. This area was added almost 10 years ago in a previous expansion so they aren’t below 65, but the path to the fortress isn’t made to be outright deadly for even the level 67s who have the requirements to start the raid. You could probably move on to the Shattered Fields raid for slightly better exp rates, but according to the guides, it wouldn’t be quite as lucrative considering a lot of the Frozen Fortress monsters drop Deepfrost Cores, one of the best exp per hour ingredients for mid level Alchemists and Mechanics.

You join the Looking For Group que and are almost immediately greeted by your new team's leader, a level 69 summoner named GoDoG.
"Hey, welcome to the party, fun's about to start!"

"Since when is grinding the same raid 8 times a day fun?" Another party member named Emendis responds dryly.

“Who the hell plays an MMO if they don’t even like grinding?”, you answer.

“As much as I like grinding,” a Guardian naked 4Dank2Tank0 says while pretending to breath heavily and making his character appear to jerk off by cancelling one of the emotes, “I think I would prefer some actual action.”

Someone else plays a sound effect of some hentai girl moaning into their mic and everyone starts laughing.

“Alright, since we are all looking for some action, let’s get this show on the road!” GoDoG says starting the instance. “Has everyone run his one before?”

As everyone shuffles around to get in formation, you

I assume this choice streamlines what our build will eventually turn out to be, by suggesting how tanky we are from our position in the lineup. And while the concept of a healslut quest intrigues me, I'm going to head that line of thinking off right now.

You head up to the front of the party, aside from you, the general consensus to GoDoG's question seems to be “no shit Sherlock” since the party leader ironically happens to be the lowest level in the party and at least two of the others are wearing a drop from the raid.

“Seems” being the key word…

A level 71 Druid named Whisperer speaks up and says that it’s her first time here after all.

The party becomes quiet for a second, likely surprised that a female avatar actually had a girl playing it, before GoDoG starts explaining the first part of the raid. You aren’t paying very much attention to him though, rather you are focused on the fact that the hentai joke from earlier suddenly seems a bit more awkward considering she was the one who played the sound effect. That brings up several more questions, but you decide not to think about them since she is, after all, just a rando.

You remind yourself that you aren’t one to judge considering your own tastes... At least not one to judge TOO much...

You can’t speak for the rest of the group though, some of them are probably judging pretty hard. Oh well, at least they aren’t chewing her out for being a noob.

While you think these things to yourself, the group bowls through several groups of mobs. As you clear out the first room, GoDoG finishes explaining the dungeon crawling part of the raid. “And so when we get to the dead end, make sure you follow us around the hidden trapdoor, we can deactivate the spikes so you don’t take half HP damage before we get to the boss fight.”

Apparently back when it came out, you couldn’t actually deactivate them and all but the best parties would end up wiping... Good thing they added in the switch, it is a lot easier to grind when you aren’t in such a desperate situation.

You start listening a bit more to the Summoner and are kind of surprised how well GoDoG knows the dungeon. He seems to know what all the roles do at every point, including yours, perhaps it’s not his first character? As he starts explaining the boss, your opinion of him goes up a bit.

“In the first phase, it is relatively straight forward, just make sure you dodge the icicles coming down from the ceiling and use your stun when he does the big windup animation. It’s kinda hectic if you haven’t done it before, so I will call it out for you.”

By the time he finishes explaining, the party has already cleared up to the third room, almost halfway done with the run. The mid-boss is ahead, while he isn’t particularly tough, he has some status drains that can be annoying if they aren’t handled properly. You aren’t worried though, you have run this raid at least 50 times, the mechanics are easy enough when you get used to it, and even if Whisperer is new it will be a cakewalk.

The mini boss door opens and you

The door opens and the party walks into the arena. In the middle stands the Frozen Golem, a huge level 67 golem made of frozen earth covered in ice. 4Dank2Tank0 runs in and activates his taunt, and it turns to face him. The golem swings its arm at him but the damage is minimal since he is significantly overleveled for the raid by 5 and guardians are generally specced for damage reduction. As soon as he takes the hate, you move your character into melee range and activate a debuffing skill.

While the boss does little damage on its own, as long as it isn't debuffed or under a damage over time effect, it will slowly stack up "frost" on everyone in the party. "Frost" is a nasty debuff specific to this boss that increases cooldowns for all your skills and lasts until the dungeon ends. If it gets too high, it will basically guarantee a wipe since it is one of those few debuffs that healers can't actually cleanse. Between "frost" and the trapdoor, you wonder how the long it took people to originally clear the dungeon…

While you and Whisperer make sure to keep it debuffed, GoDoG and Emendis lay into it from the back line. GoDoG is using his Salamander summon, and Emendis is attacking with a BlackBurn Bow, looks like they picked their equipment well for this raid. The Golem's Hp slowly dwindles down into the yellow and eventually the red.

As the golem drops to zero, the ice wall on the far end breaks open, clearing the way to the rest of the dungeon, and the arena room starts to collapse. Chunks of the ceiling fall to the ground and you carefully dodge their AOEs. Everyone quickly runs out of the room without taking too much damage, which Whisperer quickly heals up using her Healing Wind.
The Golem Chest in the next room contains 55000 gold, which, while not bad, isn't nearly as good as an actual rare drop. The gold automatically splits 5 ways between the party when Emendis opens the chest, and everyone gets 11k. Maybe the final boss will be a bit luckier…
>>
>>2180655
The group heads on to the next room and clears through a few more hordes of Ice-Bones and Winter Wraiths, you are thankful that the cores you are getting help off-sett the mediocre drop at least a bit.

While you dream of good loot, your party quickly makes its way through the last two rooms of the dungeon and ends up at the trapdoor. Its annoying since it doesn't actually have anything distinguishing it from the normal floor until someone steps on it, so you carefully walk around where you know it is and pull the lever. A mechanical clink sounds to say that the spikes are gone, and everyone drops into the boss room one after another.

4Dank2Tank0 Runs up to the boss before it can target its Ice Arrow on a back liner and casts his taunt.
You follow after him and begin your main combo by
[ ] Flying in at the boss with your Wyvern Kick! (Monk)
[ ] Use Grenadoe! on the boss to give it "Shellshocked"! (Pirate)
[ ] Use your Raining Darts to amplify your next DOT! (Swashbuckler)
[ ] Activate Swords of Cherubim granting an attack power bonus to your party! (Cleric)
[ ] Cast Totem of the Sun to give everyone extra fire damage on their magic attacks! (Medicine Man)

Basically the reason I said no write ins was that this has been the class selection process. More freedom soon.

tho I'm disappointed that the second option was to taunt and we wound up debuffing instead?

also
> frost is a debuff that can't be cleansed by healers
assuming it's pay-to-play, it must not be a very popular game, just _because_ they decided to do something that's not within the norms of most games.
>>
>>2180671
>[ ] Flying in at the boss with your Wyvern Kick! (Monk)
Damn, I had to step out of the house, but I didn't expect no one to vote.

Going for melee and hoping it's a hybrid tank, since the others seem to be dedicated debuffs, DoT DPS, and 2 buffer/debuffers that look to be ranged.
>>
>>2180881
Sorry if it was unclear, debuff was the second choice a player picked, the d2 was going by that. Pirate and monk are both tanks as well anyways, they just have skills that focus around dodge ranking and active mitigation more than Guardian’s direct mitigation. Taunt would have included both of these, guardian, and also Leeroy Jenkins assassin.

Frost is a special debuff only featured in this raid, it was an endgame raid when it originally came out and this was one of its gimmicks, but since then the level cap has increased from 70 to 90. It is fairly easy to deal with since almost every class has a DOT or debuffing skill or can get a Weapon with a DOT active ability.

Also, as far as classes go, there is some decent customization within them, for example monks can easily be played like a DPS, druids and clerics can tank if built properly, assasins can be bow or melee users, and there is even a race that allows you to get skills from other major classes in exchange for one of your own at random.

As the massive skeleton "White Death" turns the icicle it uses as a sword to face 4Dank2Tank0, you use Wyvern kick and your character flies across the room and puts hit foot into its bony face. As soon as you arrive, you go right into your combo.

Monks are best known for their low cooldown attacks and being one of the best 1v1 classes in game. You activate Orion Delay Blow and your character slams his hand into the skeleton, the next three melee attacks that hit it will deal additional damage, but that isn't the end of your combo. With practiced hand movements, you activate Aerial Rave, a skill that allows you to jump a short way and causes your next attack to proc the damage of the Orion Blow stacks without consuming them. You instantly follow it up with Tiger Echo Fist. Your character slides to the left, resetting your attack animation, it instantly applies all 3 stacks of Orion Blow. The result is a large chunk of damage sliding off the boss's health bar with all three stacks of Orion Blow still active!

Despite how easy it sounds, to get it fast enough that nobody else procs the stacks before you can apply all three without dropping them is difficult. It took you a lot of practice to get the timing down, but now it feels second nature.

Your party quickly uses up two of the remaining stacks and your auto attack takes the third, the boss is hovering at about 2 thirds of its HP now.

GoDoG shouts "Alright, Whisperer watch the AOE, Melee stuns, you are up!"

As it's health drops into the yellow, it turns damage immune with a blue barrier and starts shooting off Aoe magic into your back line. It takes four separate hard CCs to stop its invincibility, but Monk's low cooldown excels at that. As GoDoG, Emendis, and Whisperer run around dodging the AOEs, you use Dragon's Tail and your character uppercuts it with his foot. Normally it would apply a knockup to the enemy, but since the boss is in this phase, his aura flickers and the 4 next to his health bar is replaced with a 3. 4Dank2Tank0 uses his shield smash bringing it to two, and you finish the phase off with Grizzly slam followed by another Dragon's Tail.
>>
>>2181068
As the skeleton stops firing his magic, the back line starts laying into him again. Your party quickly drops him down to the red. As it hits 1/3 hp, the skeleton becomes invincible again, drops his icicle, and winds up his massive fist.
Before it can hit him, 4Dank2Tank0 activates his Castle of Stone and becomes invincible for 10 seconds. The skeleton slams a barrage of punches into the invulnerable Guardian. You have to back off to avoid taking the Aoe damage.

GoDoG shouts "Ranged stuns! Now" as he summons a one turn summon Medusa.

"I don't have one, tank a few hits!" says Emendis.

"No problem, I will have plenty of HP when I'm out." says 4Dank2Tank0

The counter ticks down with flash of the Medusa's eyes, and Whisperer's Hail Wind brings it to two.
Unfortunately, that was her only CC, so she goes back to healing4Dank2Tank0.

GoDoG casts astral Bind bringing it down to one.
Figuring you have plenty of HP anyways, you Wyvern Kick into the skeleton and hit it with Dragon's Tail again. The Aoe shreds through nearly half of your HP before you get it off, but you are still fine.

After that, the rest of the fight wraps up pretty quickly.

Mediocre loot, again. You aren't quite upset, since that’s just how it is most of the time, but you wish your luck was a bit better.

Having finished the raid, you stretch out and get up to grab some mountain dew from your fridge. Its around 10:00 am now, but its never to early to Do the Dew.

Speaking of doing, what do you want to do now?
[ ] Keep raiding with the group.
[ ] Go grind your subclass.
[ ] Get your best friend to come raiding with you.
[ ] Go sell all these fucking cores.

Sitting back down, it looks like the Assassin, Emendis, had to leave. In the minute or two span of time that you had gotten up, gone to the fridge and come back, GoDoG has already put the party back in the Looking For Group que and gotten a new DPS. This one is a level 76 Sorcerer, for a level 67 raid, he is way overleveled… If 4Dank2Tank0 wasn’t overleveled himself, it would definitely cause problems with Hate control… Fortunately though, he is, so you don’t really have to worry. Instead, you spend a solid minute cracking up about the guy's name. Hiroshima Nagasaki. Really? His avatar is asian looking, and he is wielding an Inferno Star Staff to make all his spells do fire damage. This fucking guy. It seems like you were the first one to notice, and when you point it out, everyone starts cracking up.

"How the hell did that not get you banned dude?" You ask.

"Ha! I'm half Japanese. Can't ban me if I'm being racist to myself!" He states triumphantly.

"I don’t think that’s how the ban system works…" Whisperer says.

"In reality," He says, "I doubt enough people who I don't play with often even realize what it means."

That’s probably true, if you saw a vaguely asian looking rando with an asian sounding name and weren't paying attention, you probably wouldn't think twice. It just caught your eye for some reason when you were sitting down.

With that out of the way, the party heads back into the instance. Its a lot easier with such a high level DPS, and you all manage to finish in only 18 minutes. Despite still not getting a rare drop, you do get some more cash and a larger than usual number of cores, must be because he is wearing a Ring of Looting. They are expensive as hell since they are a literal 1 in a million drop that can only be gotten by killing monsters of your level minus two or higher, but they definitely do work, increasing the entire party's loot rates by 10%. This guy is definitely a second account, maybe even more than that.

Since everyone seems to be up for it, you all keep going. Hiroshima turns on some music to get in the DPSing mood and plays it over the chat. He has surprisingly good taste in it, you recognize one song from some Japanese band who also did the OP for a show you loved. The rest of the party seems to like it well enough, at least as far as you can tell since nobody complains, although it is possible that they just muted him.
>>
>>2181208
At the boss chest in your second run, your luck finally strikes! Thank the gaming gods for smurfs with Rings of Looting! The Eye of the Ice is a seriously valuable amulet! It stops the first hostile Ice type damage you take in a fight and negates any secondary effects that the attack or spell would cause. Despite its relatively low level 70 stats, some people take it into PVP even when they are maxed to potentially block a cc and possibly get an upper hand. It has been a long while since you have gotten a Lored item, the last time was when you were still level 61! You aren't quite sure whether you want to sell it or what, but you are definitely glad you kept going.

After you get a round of congratulations from the party on your luck, you continue on. Apparently, everyone is hyped after seeing you get that, so they all agree to go for yet another round. Before you know it an hour has passed since you started. You ran three times in the time it would usually take to run twice, got some excellent loot, and even leveled up! You are now level 73!

To top everything off, an awesome song comes on over Hiroshima's voice chat.

You sit back in your chair and close your eyes enjoying the sensation. This is why you keep playing this game. The community is awesome, it gives you such a feeling of luck when you get something good, the economy system is amazing, and overall everything about it is just great.

Actually, scratch that. Right now it is giving you a very cold feeling…

You aren't sure what is happening.

Or perhaps it would be better to say you aren't sure what has happened.

Actually, on second thought, you have an idea of what may have happened, but it doesn’t make any sense.

Just a minute ago you were sitting in your computer chair playing Elder Tale in the comfort of your home. Now you are sitting outside on a rock with your back against what appears to be a pine tree. The air is far to cold for this time of year, and you seem to be wearing a thick leather-like armor.

One word pops into your head.

Isekai.

Its Japanese for another world, and it has been the "popular" genre in anime recently, but that makes your situation no less nonsensical. Somehow, you have ended up in the world of Elder Tale.

As if to mock your deductive prowess, a large eagle lands on a fence a few feet away from you and screeches at you. Above its head, you see a status bar appear; it is exactly like the ones above every mob in the game. "Bold Eagle", Lv 60, underneath its name is a green health bar. The game-like status bar looks out of place against the stark realism of the eagle it floats above.

You stand up and nearly trip, but your body instantly moves to readjust your center of mass and catch itself as naturally as if you were simply walking. The eagle gets spooked and flies into the air. It screeches at you from above before coming to land on a fence post a bit further away. You walk towards it, your body feels almost as light as a feather and your stride is slightly longer than usual, which feels a bit odd, but somehow it also feels perfectly natural. As you get closer to it, it screeches again and flies off over ancient looking broken down houses towards the top of a derelict skyscraper.

You look towards the old buildings, from what you can tell, you seem to have ended up on the outskirts of Portage, a player town that corresponds to Anchorage in Alaska. In the middle of the city, a single well kept skyscraper, the guild hall, rises into the air. At its top is a massive brazier holding a bonfire that burns like the sun, casting the city in eternal twilight. In the game's lore, the fire must always be kept lit, along with the fires along the peaks of the nearby mountains, or the Midnight Sun will set and the barrier protecting the city from legions of frozen undead will collapse. There was a repeatable weekly quest where players could bring logs to the braziers along the mountain range for some decent exp and gold, for a second, you wonder what the implications of this are before you return your thoughts to the present.

You begin walking towards the center of town, along the way, you spot other adventurers… It would seem you aren't the only one who was brought here. Some are panicking, some are despondent, and some wander slowly towards the town center like you. Among the thin crowd, you notice several of them making hand gestures into the air. You mimic them, and the game menu pops up in mid air. This is surreal. Your first thought is to check the log-out button.
No luck.
A red symbol flashes on the menu window as you try to press it. You more or less expected that, but it was worth a shot…
Next you open your equip screen. You select a different armor and in an instant it changes on you with an audible clinking sound. Hmm. You feel the cold all over your body rather than just on your face and hands. You switch back to your Bully Moose Jacket and are surrounded by warmth again. Maybe it is the cold resistance attributes? Then again, maybe it is just that the Buffalo Soldier jacket isn't what you would normally describe as winter clothing.

You look through your list of skills next. They are all there. Idly wondering how they work, you look at a nearby Grass Rabbit and press the panel for Wyvern Kick. Suddenly you feel your body spring off the ground and enter the flying kick stance you are so used to your character performing. You soar roughly thirty feet and plant your foot squarely in its face. It dies instantly, which isn't surprising considering it is only level 21 and was more of a gathering resource than a real mob, and bursts into bubbles and a freshly skinned rabbit hide. You "Hmm" to yourself again.

You will have to experiment more with this, but if all combat is like that, you are worried. It is easy to hit the buttons when they are all laid out on a keyboard, but scrolling through the menu as it is a bit awkward, and you assume it would only get more difficult in a fight.

Kicking the rabbit brought you relatively close to a pond, and you realize that you haven't actually checked what you look like yet. You can tell by the way it moves and how your arms look that this is nothing like your actual body, but you are curious.

You stare into the pond and
[ ] your normal Human face stares back at you. Balanced stats. See if you can figure this one out, I'll wait.
[ ] a cat face stares back at you. It is reminiscent of your face, but covered in fur. Good dex, Were cat race
[ ] your normal human face stares back at you. With the addition of dog like ears. Good HP and Attack power. Wolf-Fang race
[ ] you notice you have fox ears on the top of your head and a fluffy tail swishing behind you. Trade a random monk skill that I haven't mentioned yet for a skill from another class. Fox Tail race

Normal human face.

Always good to have an ace up your sleeve for dire situations. Also, fluffy tail~!

There wasnt a need for this step, but if were doing it we may as well pick an interesting one.
>fox tail
A monk with illusions would be cool. Or we go full retard and get anchor howl on a race notorious for having the least hp.

It is important in the setting since the different races are different physically, react differently to certain things, get certain bonuses, and may interact differently with some guilds.
For example there is a guild named <Touch Fluffy Tail> that is full of foxtails who before the catastrophe were dedicated to getting the perfect lucky build by making numerous smurf accounts

Have you read the combat of other vrmmo quests, smt quests, or combat chain? Plenty to choose from as long as you know what general direction you want to take.

I am home-brewing it based on as many skills from the actual canon as I can find. After that, I am taking references from a bunch of quests and tabletops I have played. Honestly, combat won't be the MAIN focus of the quest, but it is still important to the setting. I will post up a pastebin or maybe just make an image or PDF of it or something. You are only going to know your skills and how they worked in game since the MC didn't know much about other classes besides what they basically did.

Also, you won't believe your luck on the rolled skills. I rolled d11s to get the classes and d40 somethings to pick off the list of skills. Out of all the random crap that would be useless with your build (read:mage skills) you actually got something functional. Omedetou.

So, basically it's gonna be a cluster fuck?

Wait, so is this really illusion monk?

>implying randomly busting a Cleric capstone AoE Wis-based nuke out of our ass wouldn't be hype as fuck
Kinda disappointed we didn't get to choose what sort of skill we got in exchange, since as I read it only the monk skill traded away was random.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough on that. Foxtails lose and gain skills at random. In the good news, I'm house ruling that if you make it to 90 you can choose any one skill from any class since you took the ballsy option.
Its gonna be a long journey to that point though.

You definitely have illusion. It is under your racial skills list. When this was a game, it gave you some bonus dialogues that made some quests easier and was a skill that let you become invisible.
You have no idea what it can do now.

>>2186525
Yes, but to be fair, it was going to be that anyways.

See you guys in like 8 hours, I'm going to bed for the morning...

New thread for thematic reasons and because im not sure how much longer this one bumps for.
