/qst/ - Quests

After following the cobbler's route description, you've ended up in a back alley filled with junk and worse. This was to be expected; after the last dungeon was delved and the last wilderness settled, there was little need for Adventurers, so the Guild had to move into smaller and cheaper locations. It's a wonder it's still around. Of course, the Royal Decree For Re-Institution Of The Adventurer's Guild is going to change that. Sensible enough decision, you suppose, given that demigods seem to be overruning the world and have destroyed half of civilization. The building you wanted stands there, dilapidated. The sign hanging from the wall, half fallen off, reads "ADVE__RER'S GUI". Someone's drawn a dick on the sign. You push open the heavy oaken door. It takes quite a bit of effort; the hinges are very rusty.
The area inside is dimly lit by a single candle, resting on a table next to which an old man sits in a rocking chair, reading what appears to be a treatise on dungeon delving. He looks up when the door opens, reaching for a rusty old blade next to the table.
"You don't look like Thieves' Guild lot," he says, "so why are you..." It seems he suddenly remembers something, and his eyes light up as he smiles. "Oh! The Royal Decree! You must be Adventurers! How wonderful! It's been years since we've... well, I've had any! The name's Old McGuck. I'm the Guildmaster of this place. Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild!"
>Concept: /qst/ saves the world's last Adventurer's Guild and, through that, the world.
>The Savage Invasion has shattered society and returned Wildnerness to the world. Adventurers are needed to tame it once more.
>Pick a class, a name, and race. Anything goes except by Guildmaster veto.
>Roll for Str/Dex/Int/Wis/Con/Cha/Lck, d100, arranged as desired.
>Roll under your stat to beat a check.
>Buy shit at the Guild, for the Guild or invest to improve it.
>Complete Quests to gain Renown for the Guild.
>Renown brings in higher-pay jobs and NPC Adventurers who buy shit and gather Renown for the Guild as well, making your job easier.
You can post your own jobs on The Billboard.
>Though individuals or groups can go on actual adventure's (since, as Old McGuck said, "We're not the Knitter's Guild, after all!") the main story focus is in the Guildhall at all times.
>Boast about successfully completed Quests to others, simply because you can!
>Eventually lead expeditions to beat back the Savage Invasion and re-tame the Wilderness!

You walk into the Adventurer's Guild, and Old McGuck's smile shrinks a bit as he sees your sheer form and... well, face.
"Ah, a Northerner, eh?' he says. "Well, you lot are great fighters, so you're more than welcome!" He regains his composure a bit, and moves to shake your hand. "If you're looking for work or Quests, there's the Billbord there"- he points to a board with some yellowed parchment bits stuck to it- "though I'm afraid it's mostly my to-do list at the moment. Not a lot of customers or employees, y'see. Anywho," as he moves to a bar, grabs two glasses and a bottle from under the counter and pours two beers, "have one on the house, as a celebration of the Guild's resurgence". He hands you a drink. "'Fraid I can't afford anything fancy, but that should change once your works bring in some coin and reputation to the Guild. I can also sell ya meals and such, maybe even got the odd axe or helmet lying around, though our actual general store's been closed for a while - wouldn't want you to slay dragons on an empty stomach now, would we?"

As for what you do, you can take a look at the Billboard for Quests (which can be anything from slaying demons to doing groceries), buy what goods are available at the Guild - not much, in its current state - or, if you come up with anything you'd like to do, ask if it's possible. I'll usually say yes, if I can work it into the thread reasonably well.

Generally, the only things you need to keep track of are your stats, Nourishment Level (basically how hungry you are), Titles and Bragging Rights you might earn (Titles give small bonuses, Bragging Rights are just flavour) and your inventory. There's nothing in your inventory at the moment, so don't worry about it yet.
Nourishment goes from Stuffed to Full, Normal, Hungry, Starving and then Dead. They're fairly self-explanatory. It drops one level in the morning, one at noon, and one in the evening - i.e. whenever you're supposed to have a meal.
Additionally, there's some Guild Stats, Guild Level and Renown, but we'll cover those when we get for them.
For now, I suggest you take a look at the Billboard, unless there's something else you'd like to do?
Oh, and welcome to the Quest!

Helgi struggles to remember what he's supposed to say, and just settles on nodding and grunting his thanks as he takes the beer. He downs the contents in two gulps and does a loud and smelly beer belch without bothering to turn away from the Guildmaster. Finally he remembers, and thumps his chest, saying, "I Helgi."

He walks to where the man pointed and looks at the billboard. He leans in closer to the squigglies as if it will help him figure out what they mean, as he has seen others do sometimes.

"Helgi, eh? Good to have you!" Old McGuck moves to write some stuff down in an old and dusty tome. "All right, you're registered!"
Now I'm curious. Can Helgi read? If not, assume Old McGuck comes over to help you decipher the following:

>THE BILLBOARD

>Boards for Bed
The upstairs roof has collapsed. I'm fine down here, and most facilities are still up, but if we get any adventurers, they won't have a place to stay! I should get around to fixing the roof. But for that, I'm going to need wood.

>Arming the Adventurers

>Requirements
Go to Surtleby and put a stop to the wolf raids.
>Rewards
7 Renown

>Guild Level: 1

Guild Level affects the state of the building as well as the quality and quantity of available supplies. A higher Guild Level also allows for more ambitious construction projects.

>Guild XP: 0/10

Guild XP is gained by buying upgrades through investment or savings from purchases, or by completing certain quests.

>Renown Level: 1

Renown Level affects the number and strength of NPC adventurers, as well as the number and pay of quests.

>Renown 0/10

Renown is gained through quest completion, or player-organised events like a tournament or a witch hunt. Quests not centered around upgrading the Guild tend to yield more Renown.

>The kitchen consists of a glorified firepit. You can cook Very Simple meals here, and Old McGuck can sell Very Simple and Simple meals to you.

I'll wait to see what the others want to go on, Helgi is a pretty simple man, not a shot-caller.

Is slaying a dragon and sacrificing a maiden for the god of death not actually on the billboard? I was kind of hoping to sacrifice a maiden to the god of death
>>
>>2172799
"Well, if your're not happy with what's offered on the Billboard, you can always ask around in town. There's always more work to be done!"
Also, most quests are designed for one, maybe two people, involving a couple checks. If you folks want to go out in a party, though, I can easily upscale things!
>>
>>2172808
Alright, in the meantime Helgi will try out one simple quest.

>Boards for Bed

>>2172844
As you rip off the note from the board and stuff it in your pockets, you see Old McGuck fighting back tears. "That's the first Quest anyone's accepted in seven decades," he says.
"Anyhow, are you gonna buy the wood, or chop it yourself? I've got the gold for the former and an axe for the latter."
>>
>>2172853
Helgi remembers the last time he had to buy something, it didn't end well.

"Chop, give axe. Helgi not like counting coins."
>>
>>2172859
McGucket smirks. "A man of action, then? Right-o, lemme grab you the axe from the shed. You can keep it when you're done; I won't need it no more." He leaves through a back door and returns a bit later with a rusty axe, handing it to you.
"Right, as ya know, just leave the gates, walk into the forest and hack away at whatever tree seems suitable. Watch out for the Forest Spiders, though; nasty creatures, those. That said, I'm sure you're tough enough to fend them off with that axe!"
>>
>>2172861
Helgi takes the axe and heads for the nearest forest. He looks for an impressive tree and starts hacking away at it with the axe. It could be considered boring work to some but Helgi is at peace when he's occupied with a repetitive task.

>>2172904
Nice! 10 or lower is a critical success, so you just earned yourself a Title!

You walk into the forest with your axe, trying to find a particular tree to chop down. You wander around for hours, unable to find the perfect tree. Eventually, your anger gets the best of you and you begin hacking away at whatever tree is nearby in a red haze of anger. You when you come by, your arm muscles ache and around you is a sixty-foot sphere of empty land that once used to be dense forest. You're fairly sure you remember chopping down three trees with one swing.
>Title Earned: Tree-Hater
You've taken a particular dislike to trees, and are very adept at chopping them down - even the walking ones.
(Title Effect: -10 Bonus to all rolls involving felling trees. -5 Bonus to hit Treants and other tree Monsters.)
You gather up what wood you need and begin to lug it back to the Adventurer's Guild in several trips. Old McGuck is very pleased to see you dragging way more wood than is needed - "Look like I'm not gonna have to chop firewood for the winter!"

Oh, and I forgot!
>Add Item to Inventory: Rusty Axe
This axe is fairly sharp, despite the splotches of rust covering it. It should make a decent weapon in a pinch.
(Item Effects: allows you to chop down trees and grants a -5 Bonus to damaging wooden objects or hitting enemies in combat).

Note that a -X bonus means you substract X from your roll.

Alright, I'll live it to freeform for now then. If we run into trouble with that, we can always wing some rules.

Old McGuck nods, looking pained. "Well, it wasn't Owlbears, but the Thieves' Guild is arguably worse. Yeah, fixing the sign up front would probably be a good start. We've got some wood left over from Helgi chopping down what's probably half the forest, if you need to remake it entirely".

Oh, he didn't hang it up on the Billboard, since you suggested it he assumed you'd do it.

You leave through the gate, on your way to the hamlet, but soon enough you're stopped by two armed men who've put a blockade on the road, and in a place with a very dense forest at that. With McGuck's help, you take down the sign from its rusty hangings and slowly trace arcane patterns over it as you mutter your incantations. It seems your skill hasn't faded, as you easily repair the weathering and damages the wood has suffered. The graffiti, technically being a modification rather than damage, doesn't go away, though. While you're at it, you also fix up the rust on the sign's fixature.

(Also, y'all might wanna note what your equipment and titles do. I'll let everyone pick one piece of equipment that confers no more than a -5 bonus to one stat check, or a one-use item).

In the interest of fairness, I'll forgo the free equipment, since magic abilities aren't something that would typically fall under an Investigator Rogue's skillset even if they're the reason Joseph was disowned by his family and forced to become a Rogue in the first place and I'm basically only keeping them as a Chekhov's Gun to pull our asses out of the fire if ever we need one.

Helgi does his best to match the immense power of the rock, muscles straining and bones popping. It almosts budges at some points. but you are ultimately unable to move the rock; it seems lodged in place. Your respect for the boulder's tenacity increases.

The shoving, pulling on and pushing against the boulder has exhausted you. You can't attempt to move it until you've taken a breather and replenished your energy.
>If you fail a check, you need to Rest Up by sleeping or drinking a drink and taking a break before you can try again. You can attempt other checks, though.

>>2173206
Whoops, oversight on my part. Well, since your new roll is so damn lucky you can have that one.

You move up into the attic, bearing the lone candle with you. Once you've opened the trapdoor and entered, you spend a solid ten minutes coughing the dust out of your lungs and wiping cobwebs from your eyes, but once your eyes adjust to the relative darkness, your keen mind translate the immense mess of stuff, junk and things you see before you into a wealth of information, useful goods and treasure! You dig around for a while, quickly finding a pot of paint and a brush, right next to a small pouch of coins!
You bring it down to the sign, where Withenwise the Wizard has already repaired the damage to the sign. You repaint the sign in your best calligraphy and hang it back up. It looks a bit out of place in the dirty alley, but it's sure to attract attention!

Don't count me out on that just because I can't do the lifting itself. I'm a wizard. Folks like us specialize in using magic to do things that our muscles alone can't! You kneel next to the wolf. It's difficult to tell exactly what happened, but judging by how deep the pitchfork is into the body, with a third of the shaft being inside of the beast, it seems like it forced itself down the pitchfork in order to savage whoever was stabbing it. "Oh dear. I'm afraid we're out of rooms at the moment". He hastily scribbles a note on some parchment and pins it on the Billboard. He turns to you and stands in thought for a bit.
"Ranger, eh? There was someone who said they needed a tracker. Apparently an entire village disappeared. You should talk to Maximillion about that".

After pinning that note on the wall, Old McGucket pins on a lot more. "More manpower means we can get more work done," he says. "I'll provide just that".
However, he would not be the only one today to post on the Billboard - not long after Montelio enters, a brusque, stout man in chainmail and a surcoat in the colours of the city stomps in, pins a note on the Billboard, and leaves. "Ah, Telgrin!" Old McGucket says. "Captain of the Watch in this here Eastern Quarter. Bit of a direct fellow, but he means well. Plus, a job from someone that's not me might mean coin!"

You take the note from the Billboard, to the approval of McGucket. "We've got the manpower and the skills, now we just need to recognition and jobs'll start flowing in." You set course for the busiest area you can find, which ends up being Goldflower Square, a massive market. You jump on top of an empty cart, to the annoyance of the owner, but before he shoos you off, you begin an epic speech about the dangers of the Savage Invasion and the need to support the Adventurer's Guild. Your speech is worthy of a king, and the people will certainly remember it.

Hermit Roger. Elf male. Used to live mostly on the forest to guide those who got lost on it. Decided to check the rumors of the adventuring guild for a change of scenery.

Roger enters the old building looking around and examining the place. "Last time i checked adventuring guilds were a lot less...dusty."

"Thanks,I guess."
Iren gets a cheeky smile as he moves his head closer to Lupa.
"I'm not gonna do it for free though."

"There's likely enough idle hands here to help you reclaim it back, if you've got somethings of worth you're willing to trade as payment. Otherwise... I think I hear someone digging downstairs? There ought to be space enough for you soon enough."

>>2174232
"Gods, if it's got that bad, they've really gotten out of hand. Don't those idiots realize the point of a Thieves' Guild is to make sure they steal just enough so the people they rob don't die from poverty and leave them with no one to steal with?

"Someone's going to have to put a stop to them, I suppose. And I'm guessing it'll have to be us. Damn."

>>2174242
"Denvor? Ah, I remember his case. They never did find his family's murderer, did they? A bloody shame. I'm sorry for your loss."
>>

"Yeah, and what is it you want?" She says before purposefully coughing in his face.

>>2174266
"No thanks, the place is completely taken over by plants and shit, and is now in a very bad neighborhood to say the least, so I won't be getting a lot of business there anymore."
>>
>>2174275
"Well,you're certainly rude."
Iren leans back.
"I was joking,though I suppose considering my origins,it wasn't very easy."

"They don't really care."

Iren leans back into his chair.

"When-Not if-We robbed a place dry and firmly ruined many innocent families' lives,we just stayed there for a while and sent people to check on places nearby."

Iren sighs,frowning.

"If it had a sufficient amount of money-A.K.A. any at all,we'd gather our shit and move there."

"It was a pretty horrible life to lead."
>>

"Yes it was real shame that he was murded..." She said with sad look until she turned away and smiled evilly.

<MIRANDA'S FLASHBACK>

Lord Denvor II was running for his life in the dark wood. He life was very wonderful when Miranda become maid of his household to the point he requested nightly "night services". Everything goes hell when he turned to busty farm girl and got her pregnat. To protect his honour and diginity as nobleman he hired an assassin to kill the farm girl. But the problem was the assassin was Miranda herself!

He keep on running until the arrow hit his knee and fall down in pain. Miranda slowly approached him with ice cold stares and said, "It is shame that you betrayed me "Master", I don't like when you go for the farmer girl."
She bend down and stabbed his other knee with her dagger and he scream in more pain.
"For your punishment.... I will take your life. The funny thing is I actually suppose to kill your wife who have connection with the temples but I changed my mind..."
Lord Denvor look more horrifying when Miranda pulled out rusty meat cleaver.
"You was wonderful Master but too bad you were not good enough...!"
Lord Denvor II screaming in pain and horror as Miranda mercyless chopping him with the cleaver.

>>2174347
Lupa just stares at her as she looks off into space.
"Yeah, I don't think this one has all her marbles."
>>
>>2174302
"I get you," Joseph nods. "Nobody chooses that life unless they have to. It's almost as bad as an adventurer's, after all. Though from what you're saying, now it might be even worse. You still have any friends back in the Guild?"

>>2174359
"It's a rough experience, having someone you know be murdered so brutally. Even if they're just an employer. Sometimes especially so," Joseph comments heavily, unable to see the expression on the maid's face.

>>2174347
Stepping forward, Joseph places a comforting hand on Miranda's shoulder. "All we can really do now is try to move on, and hope justice finds his killer, even if the law may not."

Wait. Was something off about her? Surely not. He must be jumping at shadows.

(Joseph is generally ridiculously perceptive, but given your Miranda's similarly high Charisma, it's plausible that he continues to remain ignorant about her facade. Do you have any preference about how we roleplay this?)
>>
>>2174359
"Fair enough."

"And thanks for the compliment."

"Anyway,i'll go do it later."

>>2174418
"A couple."

"I was apparently skilled in that place so I racked up plenty of favors as well."

"And boy,do they take favors seriously."

"I also managed to..."

Iren's cheeks go red.

"Uh...'Contact' a girl pretty high up in the chain of command."

Iren akwardly looks around.

"So...If we need any help from those guys,I can get us hooked up."

>>2174463

"I guess I've just got a thing for helping people in need," Joseph sighs, "wishing someone'd lent me a hand way back when. Name's McCarter, by the way. Joseph McCarter. And you?"

"McGuck likely won't turn you away if you're willing to help clean up the place, but I don't know that we'll have much use for a maid once we've gotten all this set up proper and start getting into more dangerous work. I expect you'll want to start looking for a new employer before long."

Talleth, Human Knight
Born with a pure streak of bad luck that left her struck by lightning twice before she was 16, but with a silver spoon in her mouth. She was never that strong, or smart or clever, and was slow on her feet and tended to fumble small objects, but she was just plain likable and tougher than a brick of iron.

She picked up a suit of armor and a sword and set out to use that toughness to help people and make a future as an adventurer. With a lazy gait and a bit of a dopey smile, she wanders into the guild.

“Morning, all! This is the Adventurer’s Guild, right? I hope we all get along!” That poor, dumb Knight. Let’s see how long she lasts.

"But... is that suppose to be part of my training...?"
"Actually no... To tell you truth I have no more training to offer you but at least I can offer you some pleasure of the card games."

"Welcome! I believe we don't have a room available for you to practice alchemy, but someone could build one! Just pin a note about it on the Board".

>>2174061
I like it, smart thinking.

You take the old path, familiar twists and turns bringing you to the home of Jace, the purveyor of herbs, and skilled poison-maker. You knock on the door, and fortunately he's home.
"Oh, Joseph, it's you," he says. "Do come in, it's a bit of a mess, but don't mind that. How have you been?"
You exchange pleasantries and catch up with each other for a bit, before cutting to the chase. It takes some convincing - Jace has tried to leave his poisoner's past behind - but eventually relents, on the condition that you get the Guild to purchase their herbs from him alone.

I've gotta admit I've got some reservations about the edginess of this character, but judging from the thread, you seem to play alright, so go ahead for now. Please don't turn it into a massive edgefest, though.
McGuck looks a bit reserved at the blood-stained maid walking in, but eventually points to the door leading to the courtyard. "Well's over there," he says. "You can clean your clothes there. And welcome to the Guild>'

>>2174258
Welcome!

"Aye," McGuck says, "We've seen better days. Everyone's already been working hard to improve it, though!"

>>2174610
Yep, degrees of success is the way I handle contested rolls!

>>2174839
"Aye, it is! Welcome!"

McGuck jots down every newcomer's information.
"Work's on the Billboard, I've got some food and drink for sale, as well as some arms and armour. We have a well outside, but it's a bit of a trickle at the moment. Oshur here," pointing to the Dwarf, "is working on digging out new rooms for everyone. He might need some help, though - ask him about that, if you fancy having a bed tonight".

>>2174900

"Welcome to the Guild! If you need a family, you'll find one here - if a family with a lot more pointy objects to poke bad people with than normal," McGuck says as he chuckles.

The seal is the royal one - a crown over two crossed halberds. You walk towards the Royal Palace, the streets looking increasingly better maintained and wealthy as you go. Eventually, you reach the Golden District - the residence of the wealthy, walled off from the rest of the city. You show the guards at the gate your document and they let you in. After a bit of wandering, you find the Royal Palace, and are directed towards the treasury after once again showing the document. You're a bit disappointed that the line seems to be ridiculously long.

You leave for Carpentry Ave, and see woodworkers chipping, sawing and hacking away at wood-based projects in various stages of completion. One man seems to specialize in furniture, he probably has some chairs and tables of high quality, but specialists usually charge more.

Could I go to a bar where some journeymen of the Thieves guild drink their pay? I mean, they surely would appreciate somebody who could tell them about things like retirement plans, paid vacations ,maternity leaves and hazard pay. You go back to John, whose face turns red when he sees Beavis' clothes. You begin your explanation, but are interrupted by Beavis, who starts firing off about how this was the coolest thing he's ever done and he can't wait until his next training. Once he's done, which takes about ten minutes, you finish your explanation.
"Well, John says," I don't think you quite got the spirit out of him, but he's the happiest I've ever seen him. Having some more laundry is well worth that."
"Tell you what, business has been slow lately, so I don't really need him around the forge all that much. How about you take him to the Guild, to clean some stuff, run you guys drinks, and such? He slams open the door, panting heavily. McGuck looks up. "Oh, Beavis, it's you. Did John want something?"
Explaining the situation, McGuck smiles and fetches a broom. "Good job, Ted. I can finally give these old bones some rest." He hands the broom, which he was using to sweep the floor, to Beavis. Saabir the Strong, a burly human mercenary.

He doesn't look like the brightest guy at first glance. He has a tall yet stout build and his giant brow doesn't help. He doesn't seem like he belongs here. He looks like a man who has traveled far. Perhaps from the mid-eastern part of the world.

As a traveler he's seen it all but hasn't really learned much. This is probably due to his focus on completing the contracts he's assigned, he is a very determined man. This is partially why he's survived so long in his trade.
He's met many people and killed just as much. Despite his thuggish appearance and his history he is a fairly jolly and friendly man. Just try not to ask too much personal questions.

He carries a bag full of all the contracts he's completed, as his personal portfolio and a rather beaten up looking Scimitar sword. He is very prideful of these items.
His weakness is booze, once you get him drinking, he wont stop.
