Armament – Mastercrafted Flintlock Rifle

[1/2]

On the last thread you... really didn't get to do much due to holiday season eating up much of my time. You ended up picking up your starting weapon and decided to skip through the early childhood and make your way straight into being a squire.

During your time as a page under House Tarly you did display quite a significant amount of talent, but also a great deal of inflexibility. Your mind was painfully unmalleable and in many subjects, you were a difficult child to handle simply because you had your own way of doing things which worked for you and you saw no reason to deviate from that.

Though in large part you weren't that keen on spending that much time playing around with the other kids and make friends, you did end up becoming closer with your older brother. He was a likeable sort, one passionate about honor and chivalry and of defending the weak. Over time, he ended up learning that you weren't like the other kids.

Memory Madness. That is what he called it.
He didn't exactly believe that you had lived through several lives already even though that is what from your perspective seemed to have happened. He instead stated that you simply were some strange type of savant which creates false memories in order to help with the learning process.

You weren't exactly sure if that's the case, but logically speaking it made more sense.
You also ended up learning a bit of High Valyrian, though largely a dead language that is never really spoken, but it helped kill the time. You doubt you could actually translate any ancient manuscripts or anything, but certain people think that it makes one seem more sophisticated when speaking out quotes in that language.

After your days a page, a knight was chosen for you to squire under when you reached the age of 12. Ser Hector Heronford, a braggart, showoff and a drama queen, but also a greatly skilled fighter and a horseman who seemed to be on a quest which may or may not be entirely made up.

Right now however, you're at Harrenhal.

It's middle of the night and you've waken up to the ruckus caused by a grappling hook that was seemingly shot through your window few moments ago. You tried to go out and call the guards, but the door was locked and nobody seemed to hear you at all.

You tried to get your rifle, but the chest you stored in seemed to have vanished from your room entirely alongwith all of your other weapons. All you could do was wait in horror as the intruder would continue to make his way up the wall and to your window.

After the long minutes of grunting and groaning, a bearded face appeared through your window.
"Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!"

You stared in horror as the bearded loonie crawled his way into your room, somehow managing to do it despite his elongated fingernails.

"Who are you?"
You tried asking as he dusted himself off on to the carpet
"Me? ME!?"
His expression shifted to different ones with no actual movement in between, like someone had just turned a lightswitch off and on and changing his expression when it was dark.
"I'm the King, your King. The Greatest King in all the Seven Kingdoms."
"Though it's not really much of contest now is it with me in the race?"

You look as the loonie tastes his own hair after saying that and then changes his mind and wraps his locks behind his shoulders.

"Listen boy. Man. Thing."
"I am here because I did not get any presents. Do you know what that means?"
You shake your head at the raving madman
"That. Is..."
"TREASON!"

You back off to your bed, trying not to excite him any more than he already is.
"What. Do you! Do you? I think you do. Know about Santa Claus?"
As you're backed into the corner of your room on your bed, he inches closer and whispers in your ear softly as he presses one of his gangly arms into your chest.
"Tell. me. his. name."

You break under the pressure.
"HIS NAME IS SAINT NICHOLAS! He lives in the North Pole! He flies through the night sky with a sleigh pulled by reinders!"

The madman blows into your ear.
"Who are the reindeer?"
"Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen."
"You sure you didn't forget anyone?"
"RUDOLPH ISN'T CANON!"

He pulls you into his chest with his gangly arms and hugs you.
"shhhh... shhhh..."
"It's allright. It's alright. They can't hurt you anymore Child. Sweet, loyal child. We'll get them all. I promise you that much."

He brushes your hair.
"Santa might be a filthy liar and a traitor, but you can always count on me sweet child. Good children get presents. Bad parents get ashes."

He caressess your cheek with his nasty fingernails as he hugs you with his other arm.
"What present would you like for this Christmas my loyal subject?"

>What do you ask for Christmas from the molestily creepy guy that just broke into your room?

I am genuinely scared yo ask for anything like "what you think I deserve, or a great gift." For him to turn around and say the best gift I could give you would be leave from the wretched world. And try and cut our throat.

I gotta go to bed soon and start driving on early morning.
Hope you come up with something you want.

Try to make it a gift one can carry on one's person, whether it be gold, items or knowledge.
You're getting a freebie now.

You have until the end of 24.12.2017 to come into a consensus or I'll come up with something appropriate in the situation.
>>
Don't suppose you do magic stuff?
>>

If you want a destiny point as a christmas present you can get that as your gift.

Those of you who have the ASOIAF RPG rulebooks can look through them and see if there's anything interesting you'd like to suggest as a Christmas gift.
>>
Just so you know, Warging and Greenseeing are off the table.
>>
>>2167934
Can we get like two ingots of Valyrian Steel or a book detailing how to reforge it? Or is that too strong?
(Or just a Valyrian steel sword or dagger if it is too much to ask for, I remember little finger gave that assassin a valyrian steel dagger, they can't be all too rare in those sizes)
>>
>>2167980
Those are things I would be very reluctant to give you due to the scarcity of the material as well as the fact that the methods of it's reforging are something that only Qohorians tend to be able do, save for that 1 smith that I presume was paid a very heavy price for.

Magic always comes with a cost and this is true in terms of merely reshaping Valyrian steel as well.
Tywin paid a LOT of gold in order to make it possible for his house to acquire heirlooms forged of Valyrian steel Jaime and Joffrey's blade both cost more to make than your family's castle did.

Even if you acquired the skills to reforge Valyrian steel, it would be worth very little to you as it'd be extremely unlikely that you'd ever end up in a scenario where you could put those skills into use due to the scarcity of the raw materials and tools, so you could never really verify whether or not it was for real.

Also, there's a chance you might just fuck it up too and nobody would give their heirlooms for you to test your theory on.
>>
>>2167980
Like if I were to give you an ingot of Valyrian steel, it'd be too small to make a butter knife out off, merely serving as a sample piece for scientific research to help determine it's properties.

This is ultimately stuff that's worth more than gold, so it'd be something like this size.
>>
>>2168054
Alright, then that would probably only be useful for research or storing for future value. (Maybe sell after done experimenting?)

A book (or books) on alchemy maybe? I think this would be a bit of a wild card since he himself probably doesn't know what's inside it.

I think that really strong wood called iron wood we could maybe get a log or two of. (Don't know what we would use it for other than strong wooden items.)

What combat manuals/books could we get? There's Bravossi water style (I think its called), not sure what other styles the Targs could have hidden away in manuals.

A bag of gold or gems works too.

Destiny point could be used for future skill or magic stuff.

Could we straight up just get a skill point or two like the destiny point?

Just ideas

Here's some prerequisite stats to begin training certain martial qualities, such as being a Braavosi fighter or a Water Dancer.

Basically the fighting masteries that exist in the ruleset at this point are:
Bludgeoning
Braavosi Fighter ( Fencing )
Brawling ( Fisting and Improvised weapons )
Long Blade Fighter ( Arming Swords and Two-handers )
Pole-Arm Fighter
Short Blade Fighter ( Shortswords and Daggers )
Spear Fighter
Water Dancer ( Way of the Dodge )

People who get even a single martial quality in their chosen fighting style are considered really good fighters.
People who get up to 3, they're generally speaking considered top of the world in those areas.

Here's a tidbit from the Chronicles of Sorcery too since I'm at it, not that you'd really have much access to most of these, but hey.
>>
In all honesty, Sorcery only is really relevant if you're playing before fall of Valyria or after the Red Comet since noooone of this stuff will work for years in this continent.
>>
>>2168205
Will combat be text based or tile based? Asking because some weapons & skills increase range while some skills also increase movement speed.
>>
>>2168129
Bonus dice is a doable thing
Actual skill point is a bit hefty since you did just sorta get stat boost from your training as a page.
>>
>>2168301
There's a tile based combat system in this game, but I haven't used tiles since I can't yet make maps worth a damn.

However, there is also a mechanical which grants the guy with the shorter weapon less dice if I am not mistaken. Of course, for spears and polearms you can get within the reach of the weapon which turns the penalty dice around.
>>
Crack shot would be nice
>>
>>2170673
So would quick draw / steady hands assuming we get a brace of pistols.

However short term we are looking to do good in the tournament so we'd probably be better off getting better at melee combat. Our best bet, given the nature of dice, is probably to invest in either protection via armour or shield mastery.

Also, a minor thing to point out to OP because I noticed while checking our stats in the pastebin, you've not updated our funds. Just so you know.
>>
I think we should get Armor Mastery for the AR bonus, or we could take this rare chance to try to get Anointed by the Mad King himself.
However if we want to expand into essos we could get Magic Resistance or Blood of the Witch-Hunters to help put a stop to the machinations of mages.
>>
>>2170875
Also I think we should get some scale armor and a maul.
>>
Anti magic skills and fire arms, we’re Kiritsugo now

While I cannot prevent you from getting scale armor for the sake of aesthetics, I probably should point out that the difference between Munitions Plate and Scale Armor is as follows.

Scale armor, due to being pre-gunpowder era armor will receive -1 to armor rating against gunpowder weapons.

Munitions plate incurs lower penalties to combat defense, being better at dodging in hits in combat, but has greater bulk to it than Scale Armor, making it harder to run in.

In terms of armor rating against medieval weapons they are effectively the same.

Munitions Plate requires generally better forges and smiths to manufacture and repair damage to it whilst village forges are enough to repair Scale Armor and Mail Armor.
This is of course an irrelevant logistical issue for you as you're not equipping an army.

Also, Munitions plate doesn't break so easily as Scale armor does. You rarely if ever need to replace broken pieces in plate armor as usually you die if that is the case.
>>

Is anything on the table for a present like knowledge for percussion caps? Or only what Aerys can provide?

If not, then I'm supporting getting armor mastery since it will be still useful after the tournament. (+1 AR, -1 Bulk)
>>
>>2172118
Forgot my trip code
>>
What the hell is the obsession with percussion caps about? Even if we did get the knowledge of how to make them we'd need an entirely new rifle (which would be a long endeavour given we have inconsistent access to a forge or time to invest in such a thing currently) to make use of them and the ability to produce them. Both things we lack the money, connections and all that jazz to do.

Jesus why is Capatcha such a useless piece of shit these past few days?
>>
>>2172355
Our last life was ended largely because of rain making our guns much less effective. Percussion caps are one of the key features to ensuring that we do not repeat the same mistake.

However; I agree that there's very little we could do with them right now even if detailed creation instructions fell into our collective lap.
>>
>>2172355
Converting flintlock rifles to percussion was done all the time, in fact it was probably the main method of producing early percussion rifles. It's really not that hard.
>>
>>2172447
Oh.
Well, in that case; I've changed my mind and we should get to researching percussion caps at the earliest opportunity.
>>
>>2172403
>Our last life was ended largely because of rain making our guns much less effective.
To be fair we made a long series of terrible decisions, got shit luck and lacked the skills to deal with it. We never picked up any command skills, never trained our men with a drill instructor to make them stand and fight longer or anything else. Our guns didn't lose us the fight, our men did when a fuck ton of them broke and ran. Not to mention the fact our partner-captain didn't support our ramming attack and ran like a bitch.

>>2172447
True but we'd still need a forge and access to mercury, assuming you actually plan to produce ammo for it.
>>
>>2172489
This is correct.
You chose the hardest difficulty and rolled poorly. Death in such case is only natural.

Also, it should be pointed out that percussion caps are made from rare materials unlike blackpowder, so without lands producing mercury and a chemical industry backed by functioning trade routes to major hubs, it will be relegated to your personal use.

Also, you WILL need a laboratory with glass tooling to manufacture it regardless.

+ You lack the tools to make a caplock conversion as it does actually require machining tools and you will also lack metallurgical knowhow and the tools necessary to make conventional revolvers.

Oh, and you naturally cannot carry the laboratory necessary for producing percussion caps with you, so the moment you run out of them, your gun becomes dead weight and Westeros is pretty big, which means that even if you had a small caplock army, their deployment range would be limited by your logistical capabilities as you cannot use local infrastructure to resupply them like everyone else does.
>>
>>2172355
This guy has the right of it.
You could focus on and fap all over your guns as much as you want, but your theoretical understanding of weaponry you are unwilling to sell anyhow or teach anyone to make is going to be of limited value.

Sure, guns give you an edge in combat and certainly allow you to win fights you normally wouldn't be able to triumph in. But you will never be able to rely on guns 100% to win you every battle.

There simply will NEVER be enough guns or powder production to allow that to happen. At least not on your lifetime.
>>
Here's the things that I think would serve you best.
>Fate Point (Allows you to dodge death once.)
>Gunnery Manual (Allows you to learn a single gunnery benefit you meet the prerequisites of after reading and practice.)
>Martial Manual (Same thing, but with Martial Qualities)
>Professional Manual ( You learn basics of a profession after reading and practicing it. Carpentry, Glassworking and Masonry would fall to this category. )
>Just straight out money

>>
Guys we're better off with improving our military / combat skills rather than getting a chemistry set or anything like that as we're years off from having the resources and time to just sit around experimenting.

We're a squire. We don't have the money or time to sit around experimenting. However if we can improve our combat ability we can potentially get the money we need for such studies. Not to mention granting us a greater benefit by being active across multiple lives (we are almost certainly going to die again to something) rather than a chemistry set which we can only access in one life and until we destroy or damage it or it is stolen from us.
>>
Forgot my trip last time >>2176326

>>2176740
Could we get a high school/library equivalent of a chemistry book instead of a chem set? Also, if we do get a glass blowing book/knowledge, is it modern or Westerosi knowledge?
>>
>>2176826
You will lose it of you die. This much I guarantee.
>>
>>2176854
Well it'd be based on glassworking practices of this world if that's what you are asking.

You could get a chemistry book I guess, but it won't help you that much in a medieval setting since much of it is theoretical knowledge that has little practical application. Especially without a Laboratory.

Sure, it would detail some experiments, but it's not like they would teach you about bombmaking.
>>
>>2176883
Ultimately what the Glassworking book would detail is the techniques and substances required to create different shapes and colors of glass.

It would not define the method of making the furnace.
>>
We're about to enter a tournament we might as well just get crazy santa to give us a skill point in fighting.

Doing well in this tournament will do much more for our future prospects than having immediate but theoretical knowlege of chemistry that we don't yet have the time or money to utilise.
>>
>>2176938
Yeah, for now, I'd rather get armor mastery.

Let's figure out all the technology and methods when we can become more independent.
>>
>>2176938
But if we gain some secret knowledge then we could make better use of it than being better at fighting.
Like why nothing ever crosses the sunset sea.
Or where R'hllor lives, or why valyria fell, or what formed the shadow near asshai.
>>
>>2177053
We're not going to be in a position to make use of any of that knowledge for probably several lives, unless we get extraordinarily lucky in this one. Regardless, I can't imagine this will be literally the only opportunity we ever have to acquire it. In this instance we'd be better off getting something that will help us immediately and give us an advantage for the rest of this life.
>>
>>2177090
This.

>and give us an advantage for the rest of this life.
All of our future lives not just this one actually, since armour mastery (and improved armour mastery!) doesn't have stat requirements and thus we will always have it in all our lives from the beginning which'll enable us to get started as a warrior and such more quickly / easily.
>>
>>2177053
I don't really see how the answer to any of those questions would truly help you. Such things would be a bit above your weight class.

>>
>>2177993
True and the fact remains that to produce percussion caps we'd need to make a fairly sensitive percussion-activated explosive. The one that we'd probably need to use being fulminate of mercury. I'll be honest, I don't trust the dice, our skills or more or less anything enough to work with a metal which causes insanity and can leak through your skin.

And as tempting as the mystery box is, I like certainty in my results.

>>2178020
Eh, as long as you don't get cuts on your skin nor are you breathing in evaporated mercury, you shouldn't be in too much danger from mercury poisoning.

Armor Mastery Wins
I will probably need to houserule changes to armor, since I don't personally view hefty combat penalties caused by those heavier armors are justified in my setting which is largely constructed around the notion of rigid social structures and enormous difference in status and ability between nobles and peasants.

The Terrifying madman keeps yelling at the ceiling for a few more moments as you remain too stunned to do or say anything.
You try to squirm away, but his gangly arms keep you firmly within his lap.

That's when you hear it. The Roaring sound on the sky. It's been going for a while, but only now did you notice it as it had grown louder over time.

It was a sound you had long since grown accustomed in tuning out long, long ago. The Sound of Jet Engines blaring through the sky, but this time it was far louder, like a very low altitude flight during takeoff.

You hear the muffled sound of *ALLAHU AKBAR!* in the distance before the crash. One Airplane following another flying straight at the Towers of Harrenhal, collapsing them as they strike at them with vicious force.

With the sounds of screaming, explosions, fire and crumbling stone on the background, the madman looks at you with a far more serious gaze in his eyes, as if he'd stopped playing around.
"You understand what this means right? It's time for you to wake up and open your eyes to reality. You saw it too didn't you?"
"W-what?"
"Dragonfire can't melt Steel Beams. Harrenhal was an inside job."
"WHAT!?"
"Aegon's Conquest wasn't real. We faked it to beat the Braavosi. I mean for real, why do you think we didn't simply step right back in to reclaim Valyrian freehold despite having the best claim for it?"
"I DON'T FUCKING KNOW!"
"It was all a plan to create a white homeland."
"What."
"The Chairman of the Iron Bank of Braavos, Jorhe Sorhos sponsored many humanitarian efforts to help Dothraki Refugees to reach Valyria. Many of the more sensible holds cried out against it, but they were rebuffed with the help of Braavosi Gold."
"Are you for real?"
"Plan was hatched to create a new homeland in the lands untouched by the savages in the untouched west. Though deprived of magic, it would need to suffice for us to build a great civilization."
"Let me go man."
"DON'T YOU GET IT?!? The Doom of Valyria was a terrorist attack funded by the Sorhos Foundation! It was he who got the nuke into the hands of the Dothraki Extremists which proceeded to use it to cripple the power structure of Valyria whilst the Hordes of savages looted and burned the rest of the nation unchecked!"
"Why would they even do that?!"
"For the Greater Braavos Project. They knew they couldn't invade Pentos if Valyria stood in the way."
You try to struggle from the hands of the madman
"DON'T YOU SEE?!? THE WALL WAS BUILT TO KEEP THE DOTHRAKI FROM MIGRATING FROM THE NORTHERN LAND BRIDGE!"

Another plane is coming.
It's flying straight at you. Inside the cockpit you see two sword waving middle-eastern men screaming.
You try your best to shield yourself from the impact.

You feel a slap on your face
"Wake up Arthur. You're having another Nightmare."
You open your eyes to see your brother looking down at you.
"You were screaming again. Was it the boat dream?"
"No, this was... Well, different to say the least. The King broke into my room with a grappling hook and started going on about how Harrenhal was an inside job or something. Everything else is a bit fuzzy."
He looks at you oddly
"You need me to look for a Maester for some Sweetsleep?
"No, no, I'm good. I'll just head back to bed."
"Whatever you say. I'll be right next door, so shout like you always do if you need me to slap you again."
"Right. Good Night."
He waves as he walks through the door back to his own room.

You fall back to sleep, but this time it was more peaceful. You dream of the day when Ser Hector was training you to move with armor. It was a very Dragonball esque training. He made you run around doing errands whilst wearing a borrowed coat of junk armor that was due to be melted.

> You Gained Armor Mastery! 1+ Armor -1 Bulk

During these days at Harrenhal, you've been looking to get yourself kitted up, the question is how did you spend your budget of 1050 silver stags?

Here's stats for the weaponry too where you'll find shield stats as well.

You can vote for what weapon you want to use for the tourney, but you don't necessarily need to pay for that weapon as it's just a blunted weapon used for the duration of the tourney.

>>

Forge it

Large shield if there's enough support otherwise cool with standard

Scale seems like the best since we're like 14 unless we can comfortably wear halfplate

And a bastard or long sword as the weapon

Forge, large shield and a bastard sword if we know half swording, otherwise the hand axe

>Munitions armor

Munitions armor has a -2 armor penalty compared to the -3 armor penalty with scale.
Munitions has 3 bulk while scale has 2 bulk.
They both have 6 armor rating.

I'd rather have easier dodging than more speed. They both have the same armor rating and cost. (Munitions has less maintenance needed)

Right now this is armor penalty v.s. bulk. The armor mastery alleviates the bulk already so we can take the lesser armor penalty for extra dodging. (I armor penalty works that way)
>>
Looks like you guys want the lighter Scale armor over the heavier Munitions armor even though it offers the worse combat defense.
>>
I'll check the votes again tomorrow and write. Let the night time people vote.

>>
The way Bulk essentially works is that you reduce your movement by half of the bulk carried.

Your starting speed without any running training is 4 yards.
It wouldn't really matter whether you have 2 or 3 bulk from the shield and armor, since both essentially grant you -1 yards to movement per turn.

If you want more movement per turn, you can always train running. It's not that hard.
Or you can simply train to be skilled enough warrior that you don't ever really need to run.

You seem to like your Bastard Swords. In terms of rules though, the only advantage that a Bastard Sword has is that you can do both 1 and 2 handed attacks with it, but it takes away one bonus dice from you because it's a more difficult weapon to wield in comparison to a Longsword (Which is using the incorrect term, I know, the correct term would probably be an Arming Sword.) which can only do 1 handed attacks.

Basically, if you do 2 handed attack, you'll be abandoning the combat defense of your shield for +1 extra damage.
In terms of the rules, there's no actual reach advantage in comparison to a regular arming sword (longsword)

"Squire Arthur, even though it's your money and you can use it however you want, I believe I should remind you that your father expects you to purchase equipment with that."
You put the leathers and the sheets of steel you purchased into a rugged burlap sack and toss it over your shoulder.
"I'm working on it Ser Hector. I found an abandoned forge in the ruins and I intend to use that."
"Arthur, an armor is something one bets his life one you-"
"Which is exactly why I can't afford to let some smith I don't know sell me armor of dubious origin. I'm glad we agree."
"I would hardly call Castle-forged steel of dubious origin."
"Well, I've got a bit higher standards than that so if you don't mind, I've much work to do and not much time to do it."
"I suppose you always were one of those people learned by doing, rather than by being told. Go on then. Make your armor. Oh, I remember how cocksure I was in my youth."
"You still are."
"Why thank you, I do dare to say that I've aged quite well."

You haul off your gear and proceed to work and created the measurements needed for your armor. Reproducible methods of measurement were key, as the goal was to create a standard pattern piece of plate armor with interchangeable parts.
It may not be a work of the highest quality. Not by your standards at least, but it's got one advantage to it. It's cost efficient and it can be made fairly quickly.

"I say, that's passable work of smithery! I've certainly seen worse pieces of armor than that. As expected of the one worthy to be the squire of Ser Hector Heronford."
"Oh sod off you daft cunt. I'd like to see you find a smith that can pull this off in 3 days with only 300 silver stags and besides-"
You put the armor on top of the gambeson you nicked from your dad's entourage.
"It doesn't require a second person to put it on."

Suddenly Ser Hector grabs a branch destined to be firewood and smacks you straight into the breastplate with a resounding crack shattering the piece of wood as it strikes your clanging steel.

"WHAT THE HELL MAN!?"
"Surprise attack is the best test for one's armor. You let your armor take the blow and you're still standing. It shows that not only is your armor of decent quality, but you also know how to use it. I think you're ready."

"Ready? The Fights won't start for few more days."
"Yes, but your father wishes to see you spar before allowing you to enter the lists. You'll be facing your brother whom is also fighting in his new armor."

>You've lost 340 silver stags in the creation of your equipment

>Colours of your knightly master. Displays your status as his squire and earns honor and glory for your knightly master or alternatively shame if you do exceptionally poorly.

You had elected to paint the shield in the colors of Ser Hector to give him some extra publicity. God knows that the man craves attention like no one you've ever seen. Your house might not necessarily be too happy about this notion, but you know, what have they done for you lately? Right now you're focused on getting that damn knighthood.

As you approached the training yard in your kit, you were greeted by your family. Your father's squires were clearly preparing for the upcoming melee and the
"Looks like you've managed to stretch the funds I gave you quite far. Normally squires aren't wearing plate. Still, you understand that if you lose in the melee, you'll need to forfeit that armor and there's a very real chance they might want to keep it."
You shrug
"It's fine, I can still afford two more sets if need be."
"Pardon?"
"You mentioned wanting to see me fight. Will it be one of your squires?"
Your father looks away and lets out a sharp whistle. The Squires halt their spars and turn their eyes towards your Lord Father.
"Bob! Get in here!"
Your Elder brother starts walking towards you in his fancy green half-plate with a sparring mace on his shoulder and a shield on his other hand.
"This will be a bit of a rematch. I hear the last time you sparred, it was when you were still pages. It's time to see how you've developed since then."

You grab your sword and shield and head out to the sands to face your elder brother. Back when you were made to spar as pages, you were always more than a match for him despite the age difference. Still, he's spent more time as a squire than you, so you've no idea how skilled he's gotten over those years.

Both of you take your corners in the field.
"FIRST ONE WHOSE KNEE HITS THE SAND LOSES."
"BEGIN!"
You advance towards the center of the field.
"This will not end like all those times at Horn Hill brother. I shall not be found wanting."

The ground beneath your feet was soft.
You faced down your brother, now 16 and a lot taller than you had remembered.
You peer into the eyeslits of his helmet, grip your steel, and take the initiative.

You decide to probe his defenses a bit and approach defensively.

You begin moving around your ironclad opponent, changing directions whenever he seems to think you're about to attack until an opening presents itself.

Your blade rushes out to strike him, but it was shallow. His armor completely deflected the blow.

Not being taunted by your prancing, your brother carefully aims his strike at you, but you easily move out of the way.

It is clear that half measures will not do against this opponent. His armor makes it difficult to make him yield, but on top of that his skills as a fighter have improved drastically since you last saw him.

As you sit on your ass on the ground, your armor clad brother stands over you and lifts his visor.
"Why didn't you try to knock me down?"
"Maybe I wanted to see if you'd gotten any better."
He looks at your weapon
"What's the deal with the Bastard Sword?"
"I just picked it up just because I thought it looked nice. There's no deeper thought behind it."
"You do realize that's a handicap if you're not planning swapping to two hands."

You look at the blade
"Well, I do now."

Your father walks to the grounds.
"Well, how was it. Think you're ready now?"
"Can't say I'm too pleased about this result. Arthur was fighting with a handicap."
"Are you going back on your word?"
Bob gives a rubs his eyes and gives a sigh
"I suppose I have to go through with it don't I?"

Your father pats him in the back.
"Good lad."

"I'm sorry, but what's this about?"
"It's about your brother's anointment."
"Pardon?"
"He already distinguished himself against the Kingswood brotherhood in helping to earn the trust of the smallfolk with his exemplary service as well as capturing one of the leaders of the vile band of outlaws."
You look at your brother again.
"Holy shit. You actually fought alongside with the big boys."
Your Father puffs up his chest.
"Yes and for his merits, a knighthood would be due, but he has thus far refused anointment until he managed to prove to himself that he was worthy. Meaning, he didn't want to be the knight who couldn't beat his 13 year old brother."
Technically in mid sixties, but whatever.
"Well take it from me then. I'm fairly certain that you'll probably be able to kick the teeth in of any 13 year old that's gonna give you lip. You don't need to worry about that."
"Do you need to phrase it in such a nasty way?"
"Of course. I'm a very sore loser."

You turn to your Lord Father Bryen
"So, how about the matter squire's melee then?"
"I don't know, what do you think SER Bob?"
"I'm not anointed yet, but yes. I think he's definitely skilled enough, provided he doesn't get overconfident."

There's 2 days until the fights begin is there anything you'd like to do before that?

I don't know if Westeros has figured out odds and all that, but ideally we could set it up to where we have a medium-sized bet on us that, if it pays out, will earn us lods of emone. Then we'd want a larger bet on someone safe, someone who we know is going to kick some ass, which if it pays out would be just enough for us to break even or make a slight profit taking into account that we'd lose the other bet.

The Bookies don't handle unofficial entries.
Drinking contests between nobles and Mystery knights can't be betted on days in advance.

Such things can only be betted on if you're next to someone that's willing to gamble on it.
>>
>>2186814
Of course, but that is the best betting pattern to keep a low profile and still rake in the monies.
And after that fight betting on our-self is a shitty move.
And its not like we should make all our bets at once, these joust take days to finish.
>>
>>2186814
In addition to betting, could we change out to an arming sword? Or is that already a thing since we just borrow one of the swords they have?

>>2186792
Supporting betting on the ones we can bet on that have a high chance of winning due to our outside knowledge. (If we have any)
>>
>>2186820
Do you honestly think that in a high profile event such as this, your meager 720 stags are going to be something that'll raise eyebrows with what? The Matches of betting on Rhaegar winning and the guys you know he's going to unhorse?

I'm not going to pull the Velo Quest shit on you because the whole notion of a bookie whose business will be ruined by one lucky bastard is just fucking stupid.
Also, the place is swarming with knights, so you'll have a literal fucking crusade on your ass soon if you actually tried to heist the winnings in this assembly.
Lot of hedge knights eager to prove themselves after all.

Whatever winnings you'll be able to earn with your meager funds won't come close to the amount of money the actual winners of the tourney will get anyhow.

Also, any bookie that tries to fuck up his winners is not going to be a bookie for very long. Especially since in an event like this, the privilege of being a bookie is a regulated thing and House Whent would probably drop you from the highest tower in Harrenhal if you tried to run a gambling ring without their permission in an event THEY paid for.
>>
>>2186837
Technically speaking, you're squire's sword is an arming sword.
In the matches within your age/status group, you'll only be able to use borrowed equipment though.

The proper adult melee matches will be to the first blood or until one yields, which makes them considerably more dangerous, but also far more exciting for the crowds watching.

>Indulge in the vice of gambling
>Try to find a way to the Isle of Faces

You decide that it's a good time to place some money into the bets.
There's two main ways of betting, the unregulated social one as well as the official ones controlled by House Whent who was hosting this event.

You decided to visit upon the official one and start placing bets on the entries you know will win for sure.
Downside of course is that entries such a Rhaegar, Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy and other big names will have rather low multipliers in comparison to relatively unknown contestants.
Still, even if you can't even double your money with each bout, it's still enough entries that should make you a very wealthy man, provided you're not just a crazy fool who imagined this whole thing up. Still, if you lose, perhaps that assurance will make the nightmares stop.

>Pissed all your money into gambling. Your family would be horrified.

You still have a few days before the matches though. You remember that there was a tale about Howland Reed traveling to the Isle of Faces right before the arrival of the Knight of the Laughing tree.

While it's entirely possible this was a coincidence, you also know that magic is a thing. You've already gambled whatever money you have. Might as well see whether or not there is some magical secret into the isle. Or at least you thought to do that, but as you tried to look for a boat sailing there, you ran into a bit of snag.

"Isle of Faces? What could you possibly want from there? The Old Gods still rule there. It's better not to disturb them."
"Well, I wanted to see the Green Men with my own eyes as well as figure out whether or not the Island was magical or not."
"People haven't seen the Green Men in generations. Every few years or so some foolhardy lordling gets to his head to try and visit the Isle and it always ends the same."
You look at him a bit strangely
"Care to elaborate?"
"When they catch a glimpse of the Isle, the winds suddenly turn and start pushing them back."
"You can sail against the winds and currents if you're skilled enough though. That shouldn't be much of deterrent."
"Aye, that's true. But the word is that flocks of ravens start to assail you if you persist until you turn your boat around. Whether that's true or not, I haven't tried, but I don't care to. Let the sleeping gods lie. Besides, if the Green Men still are on the Isle, there's no telling how they'd react to strangers."
He points back to the castle.
"If you seek the aid of the gods, I recommend you visit the Sept. The Seven are much kinder gods."

There are boats which the noble guests can borrow to go sailing on the God's Eye, courtesy of House Whent.
You could borrow one of these sailboats. You have experience as a sailor, so you know you could probably deal with the winds should they arise, but do you wish to ignore the warnings of the sailor?
>>
>>2188112
>Clearly what's in there doesn't want visitors. Maybe I shouldn't push my luck.

After hearing that Isle of Faces isn't exactly open for visitors, you decide to reconsider. If the Isle is magical, whatever is in there obviously does not like visitors.

Still, you did manage to confirm that there are plenty of rumours about the place being unapproachable, which has value in itself.

Regardless, you still have time on your hands before the fights. What would you like to do with it?

The Opening ceremonies for the Games have begun.

Lord Walter Whent addresses people from the announcer's podium.
"My Lords and Ladies! Today I welcome you to participate in these Grand Games held in honour of my lovely daughter Lorenah and the Queen of Love and Beauty of this Tournament."
She was a blushing girl of fourteen with high cheekbones, rose brown hair and pale grey eyes.
"Defending her Honor, a knight of the Kingsguard, my son Ser Oswell as well as his brothers."

"We are honoured to have received such a wide range of eager contestants and spectators from so far and wide from the greatest and most Prestigious Dynasties of Westeros to the most humble. I hope that during your stay you all take a moment to appreciate and explore the Grandeur of Harrenhal."

"It was in this place that the Unification of Westeros truly began almost three hundred years ago. Today these molten towers and walls still stand as a testament to the Targaryen liberation of Riverlands from Ironborn Rule, changing the face of this continent forever.
We are honored to Host the Crown prince himself today as one of the participants in these Grand Games."

Prince Rhaegar, stands up from his seat in the Royal VIP spectator stand and waves to the cheering crowds who also stood up the moment he did before sitting down again.
Naturally it was built at the spot with the best view, constructed some three or four feet taller than rest of the stands and draped in the Black and Reds of House Targaryen with enough Dragon iconography and guards to think they were using it to host a Metal Concert.

"First in line is the Squire's Melee. To the Victor, there lies a stipend of 200 Gold Dragons as well as an opportunity to be Anointed by my son, Ser Oswald himself."
After Lord Whent said that, he placed a crown of blue roses upon the head of his daughter whom then proceeded to throw a hankerchief to the grounds.

"I Hereby Declare the Harrenhal Tournament Open!"
Resounding cheers echoed throughout the gargantuan stone constructs as horns announced the arrival of the Squires who walked in a line of pairs through the 8 arenas reserved for fighting.
That includes you as well.

You were ushered to draw lots in order to determine which of you fought with whom. There were Squires of various qualities, shapes and sizes in this contest. You aren't entirely sure about their skills though. Hopefully you're better, but you never know in these things.

Both teams formed up into battle lines with shield and steel in hand facing each other.
As you charged into the fray, others soon followed suit.

For a moment, you wondered whether or not it was they that are in the wrong place or you.
You watch as most of the squires are attacking eachother with relatively ineffective blows.
The ones in the more expensive equipment are showing greater skill at it though. It’s not that they’re weak.
The ones that could afford armor are indeed in roughly the same level in their skill at arms, maybe a notch above when you were still in the Islands and that place did harden you up quite fast, so in that regard, they’re pretty tough youngsters.

Difference simply is that you’ve more years behind you.
Come to think of it, you did just the other day fight on toe to toe with someone who was technically a knight. Fresh and largely unexperienced knight yes, but a knight all the same.

You are right now standing at the edge of the broken flank. Attacking the next target will require a move action.

>”Nothing personnel kids.” Move from the back and take them from behind.
>”Stabbing people into the back isn't chivalrous.” Let the lower status squires handle that while you sit back in the event that the tide turns once again.

Loudly declare that you want the next foe, and demand the two squires next to us step back to let you fight face to face.
Muscle in to get a good spot if you have too.
>>
>>2196500
That actually gives me an idea for a third option.
>Try to taunt the Noble ones into attacking you whilst the peasant squires come and attack them from behind.

Of course you can still go with this one.
>>

I'll vote for this.

>Attack from behind

Fuck chivalry, maximise combat effectiveness.
>>
>>2196560
Keep in mind that you're wearing the colors of your Knightly master and your actions do will reflect upon his reputation.
Of course, you could just come to the conclusion that knightly oaths are just too much of a hassle for you.

Still, if you beat more opponents, that means more money to gamble with.
>>
>>2196510
Yeah that sound pretty soild
>>2196560
Lets not shame good Ser Heronford.
>>
It should be pointed out that if the peasant squires manage to land the finishing blow, it's they who would gain the ransom money from the equipment.
>>
>>2196510
This

Wouldn’t mind attacking them from behind if we weren’t using the colours of our master
>>
>>2196500
Supporting for (useful) honor and chances for glory.

I did get a laugh from the nothing personnel kids option though.

Not that there is any hurry, but you guys probably ought to consider at some point exactly what you want to do after the tourney, provided you don't get yourselves somehow killed again.

Keep in mind that accepting Knighthood would make you honorbound to answer a call to arms by your liege. Then again, you could always pick your sides before the war.

You could also just manouver into a position where you could profit from the war. Either in terms of money or by simply picking the right side.

You could also just become a hermit of sorts and immerse yourself on research and self improvement.

After the tourney, you got a short period before the war officially starts during which you have a brief moment of complete Freedom.

>12 You put on a good show
>Not enough to defeat the passive willpower of any of the proud nobles though

You move out on the enemy’s back and think about stabbing them in the back. The opening is there after all, why wouldn’t you take it.

---

”Arthur, do you know why the lords arrange tourneys?”
”To lure skilled people in hopes of recruiting the contestants?”
”Partially true, but there’s also another thing. What is the most important thing about Tourneys?”
”To… do your best?”
He laughs
”More important the prize money, more important than victory and honors, more important than even the lord himself. What do you think that is?”
You think for a moment and he pats you in the back.
”It’s the crowds.”

---

You stop.
Winning by backstabbing, what do you gain from it?
Some suits of used armor?
Ransom? To be honest, you do kinda want that ransom money.
Let’s see, how to get a fight that’s not just dogpile or backstab.

You think for a moment, smirk and bang your shield.

”CONTESTANTS HEAR ME!”

”I see your weak willed flirting with your opponents and the feebleness of your swings!”
”You must be emulating the Maid in your fighting, for you are clearly as innocent and chaste as her!”
”I am Destroying your flanks Noble ones, yet you do nothing!”
”The Courage at which you show me your hind quarters must do your families proud!”
”FACE ME! IF YOU DARE!”

You wondered for a moment if they even heard you, but hot damn, did they got motivated. Rather than the previous shy slaps with the swords that could barely constitute for fighting, almost everyone started getting serious about winning this.

The Enemy Nobles seem to have gotten reckless and abandoned defense altogether, possibly intending to break your center in order to end your showboating whilst the two poor squires are trying their best to double-team the the highborn squire protecting their flank, but he’s having none of that. Their pathetically reckless charge was utterly ineffective and the squire that tried to come from behind got his shit slapped royally as the the squire took a reckless strike and broke his nose with a blow, no less skillful than yours, but far more devastating.
”A Singular Strike!”

Powerful strikes flew left and right, however, their flanks are collapsing as one of your lads manages to knock down their last peasant.

>[Showboat] The match seems more or less decided right about now. Maybe I should go and steal a drink from the audience or something.
>[Tag team] Your last peasant squire is in trouble. Tag him out.
>[WWE SUPERSLAM] Tell the last remaining peasant squire to hold your shield. You're going to clothesline someone.

Hopefully we can get the enemy's armor too.

Really tempted by WWE Superslam, but I'm not too sure about the honor consequences.

I guess you're tagging out the little peasant.
Let's see...

>You can try Distract and Standard attack to get him off the peasant.
>You can take him from behind.
>You can place yourself in between the peasant and the nob, in which case you'd be using both your lesser actions and intercepting the next hit coming for the pleb tier squire.

What you wanna do?

>You can place yourself in between the peasant and the nob, in which case you'd be using both your lesser actions and intercepting the next hit coming for the pleb tier squire.

We are being Bold & Heroic (tm).
(Also; legacy of honour through self-sacrifice ect. ect.)

We've decided to be honourable and not stab people in the back, but there's no reason to be stupid and jump in front of the enemy's sword.

>Distract and standard attack.
Not looking to get eliminated through trying to look honorable, but an effort must be put forward to maintain our (useful) honor.
