You are Arisawa Tatsuki.

You're not a shinigami, you're not a quincy, you're not a warrior... you're sixteen. Sure you're good at vale tudo, and after taking a hell of a lot of risks you've even managed to gain some spiritual powers. But you've never really had to use them in a life or death struggle, so if it came down to it you're not sure how you would fare.

Especially not when the least experienced shinigami you know to compare yourself to has fifty years more experience than you do.

“So that's about the size of it,” Riku summarizes, after having explained as best she could. “We've got to head back to the Seireitei, this can't be the end of it and we've gotta get a report filed.”

“And you want us to keep an eye on things here,” you reply carefully, “in case this 'next move' you're concerned about happens while you're gone.”

“Pretty much,” Yoruichi confirms.

“Then we'll do it,” you agree with a nod.

“Good,” Riku smiles. “I'm confident that if anyone can keep my idiot nephew out of trouble it's you.”

The unspoken corollary? That it's entirely possible nobody can keep Ichigo 'out of trouble', yourself included. Add to that the fact that she and her wife, who between them have at least five lifetimes worth of combat experience and training, are leaving as quickly as they came and it shouldn't surprise them that your body language is betraying your nervousness.

“You'll do fine,” Riku insists firmly.

And then they leave. Riku just rips open a portal to the afterlife and runs off, leaving you to go back to your life as best you can. Same as the shinigami always do.

When you return to Miss Ochi's classroom you tune her out, finding yourself staring out the window as you try and keep a close watch on Ichigo's reiatsu. The bell rings at the end of the day and you barely notice.

“Arisawa.”

Chad's voice startles you out of your stupor. “Hm?”

“He hasn't gone anywhere,” the large boy observes with his typical calm.

“I'm just wondering what we'd even do if he did decide to do something stupid,” you sigh, finally getting around to shoving your books in your bag. “Who's gonna stop him, you, big guy?”

“I've been training too,” Chad reminds you.

“That's not what I was asking.”

“We would think of something,” he insists, rather firmly. You've heard people use that tone of voice before of course, but it was never you they were trying to convince with it.

Be direct about it. It's the best way to keep an eye on him, and maybe keep him from doing something foolish.

“I'm gonna go check on Ichigo,” you decide, giving a resolute nod. “Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do.”

“I'll come too,” Chad declares.

“No,” you tell him, shaking your head. “No offense, but I've got more training in keeping my reiatsu hidden than you do, and I want to do it without Ichigo noticing. But if something happens I'll call you, okay? We'll talk him down together.”

“Are you sure?”

You nod again. “I don't want him to feel like we're dogpiling on him either. You know he gets sensitive about that.”

After a moment Chad seems to concede the point. “Good luck, then.”

“With any luck I won't need it,” you grumble. Boy it would be nice if Ichigo could do you a solid this time and not get into trouble. But you're not holding your breath.

You head home on the bus this time, which gets you back to your family's apartment in just a few minutes. Making an excuse to your dad that you've got a headache, you leave your body in your room with a little pill Lieutenant Matsumoto gave you one afternoon during your training with Rukia. Your body kneels quietly, waiting for your instructions.

“Just pretend to be asleep,” you order. “I should be back soon enough, and my parents shouldn't bother you at all.”

“Right away, pyon!” your body replies cheerfully, before throwing itself onto your bed.

You open your window, but halfway out you pause. “And don't say “pyon” when other people are around... it's embarrassing.”

You really hope she'll be okay unsupervised... but it beats leaving your cold dead corpse just lying around in any event.

Since you're in a spirit form nobody around can see you leap from rooftop to rooftop at breakneck speed, and as you draw closer to the Kurosaki clinic you try to suppress your reiatsu the way you learned while you were in the Seireitei. Apparently you really learned it well, because you manage to press right up against the low wall to the Kurosaki family's private yard without anyone seeming to notice. Not even Ishida.

Wait... Ishida?

They're talking about something. You strain your ears to hear it, holding your breath and almost willing your heart to stop for a moment.

“That's what I'm gettin' at,” Ichigo insists, his tone low but agitated. “They took your mom too, you know what I'm feeling here. How can you disagree with me on this?”

“I want the same outcome as you, Kurosaki,” Ishida replies firmly. “But I'm not as confident as you are about the outcome of us going alone.”

“We attacked the Seireitei,” Ichigo observes. “You were fine when our odds were that bad, and we're way stronger now than we were then. Even you've been training too, right?”

“I have...”

“And what were you training for if not something like this?”

You can hear Ishida sigh. “Why did you even come to me about this? We're not really even friends.”

“You trained with a sternritter,” Ichigo explains. “It was sternritter who figured out how to hide from the shinigami. So it makes sense that you'd know how to get to where they took our moms.”

“I... that's the dumbest leap in logic I've ever heard from... from anyone!” Ishida counters, almost at a loss for words.

“But am I wrong?”

There's a long pause.

“The worst thing about this whole conversation is you're not wrong,” Ishida grumbles. “Miss Basterbinne mentioned how the Schattenbereich was hidden, so I managed to reverse engineer the technique the sternritter use to get back and forth from it.”

“See, told you it made sense.”

“I hate you so much sometimes, you know that right?”

>Interrupt. This is a terrible idea and they're letting their emotions get the better of their sense.

“You realize there's a problem with that line of reasoning?” you interrupt.

“Wait... Tatsuki?” Ichigo realizes aloud.

“You didn't notice her reiatsu earlier?” Ishida asks. “She suppressed it when she got close... though admittedly even I had trouble telling how close she had gotten.”

“That's unimportant,” you press. “What's important here is that you've forgotten the fact that if it weren't for the support we had from the Captains we wouldn't even have made it through the front door, let alone survived long enough to rescue Kuchiki.”

“She has a point,” Ishida observes.

“Shut up,” Ichigo huffs. “So what? I beat a Captain since then, didn't I? And I've gotten two more 'power-ups' since then on top of it.”

“All I'm saying is that if you want to go charging into the unknown like this you need more power than we've got on hand.”

“What 'we' are you talking about?” Ichigo shakes his head.

“The 'we' that's gonna keep you alive you dumbass!” you shout, cracking him over the head with Tōōkenju's sheath.

“So what do you propose?” Ishida asks calmly.

Ichigo and company charged in against all odds the first time, but Aizen is definitely expecting this now.

This is a bad, bad idea on many levels, but I don't see Ichigo being content to do nothing. What we need is to find someone to feel like he's being productive.

Seriously. Riku knows BOTH the people taken, and atleast one is direct family, if she hasnt charged in herself already, she either has a real good reason, OR shes just getting ready to do it later. Best thing to do is just wait, no way she wont retaliate.

“This is personal for Riku too, but you haven't seen her running off half-cocked no matter how much she might want to,” you point out to your classmates, knowing full well that you haven't won Ichigo over just yet. “There's a reason for that... because she knows how much of a colossally stupid idea charging off after them is!”

“You don't... have to do everything by yourself this very moment!”

Your last argument is almost more of a plea, and Ichigo knows it.

“You want to ask for help?” Ishida suggests.

You nod in agreement. “At least try. There's no way that Riku turns us down.”

After taking a few moments to consider it, Ichigo nods. “I'll play it your way. We need to go to the Urahara shop, use the Senkaimon there.”

With a quick message to Chad you take off for the shop. He meets you there a few minutes later, and you invite yourselves in. The big quiet guy is still there, and he greets you at the door.

“Tessai, wasn't it?” Ichigo asks, to which the large shopkeeper nods.

“You have need of me for something?”

“We need to use the senkaimon,” Ichigo explains. “It's important.”

“If it has something to do with that dreadful incident while I was away, you have my support,” Tessai nods, “such as it is.”

Tessai leads you downstairs to where the square array of stones has been set up, and instead of chanting seems to simply wave his arm at the gate to open the portal. If clogs and hat was a Captain, and it took him as much effort as it did to do this... then you have to wonder exactly who Tessai used to be.

A question for another day, you figure.

“Halt!” one of the guards at the Senkaimon orders you. “State your business!”

“Captain Kusajishi is expecting us,” Ishida lies.

The shinigami can't stand aside fast enough. “By all means, don't let me get in your way.”

“What are you doing here?” Riku sighs heavily when you show your faces in her office half an hour later. “I though I made myself clear.”

“We're watching them,” you insist, knowing full well that's not what she meant.

Her forehead hits the desk. “What do you want.”

“Excuse me?” Ichigo demands.

“You're not here because you can't get enough of my charming company,” she sighs into her worktop. “You're here because you want something. What is it?”

“We need backup for a rescue mission.”

“No,” she denies Ichigo flat-out, shocking everyone present.

“What do you mean, no?” you demand, aghast at hearing the word.

“I'm under orders not to take any action with my division,” Riku grumbles into her desk. “Strict orders. I'm sorry, but there's no room for interpretation here, there's no wiggle room, there's no loophole to exploit.”

“That's never stopped you before,” Ichigo counters.

“It's been so long since I had an actual direct order to follow that I almost forgot what it feels like,” Riku admits. “But this time it's different. We're outnumbered by Aizen's army, and our plan to try and limit damage to the living world is going to take a lot of coordination by all our divisions.”

“I want nothing more than to charge in myself and take Aizen's head, but I can't. And I can't give any orders that contradict the Head Captain's orders.”

“Then we're going to have to go on our own,” Ichigo declares.

Riku lifts her head from the desk with a groan. “Dammit... how did I know you'd say that?”

“You're just making it harder on yourself Ichigo,” Lieutenant Abarai grumbles as he tosses Ichigo into the cell after you. “Kusajishi's not gonna let you go charging off on your own when it's this close to the final battle, you know that.”

“This is my family we're talking about!” Ichigo insists loudly. “Rukia, you've met my mom, remember? You stayed with my family for months! Renji I could understand, but how could you turn your back on us?”

“I can still hear you, asshole,” Abarai mutters, throwing a sidelong frown at your group.

Rukia shakes her head at you. “I'm sorry, but we have our orders... and it's hard to disagree with them. What's happening here is bigger than any of us. We have to weigh the lives of two people against the lives of tens of thousands of innocents.”

“You're right, Ichigo. I do know your mother, and I know she is an incredible kind woman. She would understand the math in this situation.”

“Ichigo, calm down,” Ishida insists. “Arguing won't help, so while we're here we should make the most of a bad situation.”

“Make the most of what?” Ichigo grumbles, turning his back on Rukia and Renji. Eventually Rukia follows suit, turning her back to Ichigo's. You can't see what sort of face she's making at Renji, but the Lieutenant glances down at the floor. So you can guess.

“Listen,” Ishida mutters, gesturing for the three of you to lean in closer as he pulls out a little silver vial from his belt. “We needed to be in the Seireitei anyway, based on how the Schattenbereich is hidden. We can still follow through on the plan.”

“Anything has to beat being locked up in here,” you mutter. “What I don't get is why she wouldn't do anything to help us?”

“The shinigami aren't what we would consider 'good' Arisawa,” Ishida points out. “Sometimes their duty has to come first... but if you truly want to know I suggest you ask them.”

You nod, then walk over to the bars and tap against one to get Rukia's attention. “What's going on that demands all the shinigami's attention? What have you planned?”

Rukia doesn't turn to face you. “The plan is to perform a series of swaps, swapping Karakura town and everyone in it for an empty patch of... it's complicated.”

“Then simplify it for me. Draw some rabbits or something.”

A few moments pass as Rukia takes out a note pad and scribbles something that no doubt looks nothing like the concepts she's trying to convey. “This is the dangai, and this is a minor plane that exists within the dangai called a “valley of screams”. The idea is to swap a piece of that plane for a piece of Karakura town, then swap that piece of the valley for a piece of the Rukongai.”

You try to work your way through that idea while Ishida sets to work with whatever technique he plans to use to get you from this cell to wherever the enemy who kidnapped Mrs. Kurosaki and Mrs. Ishida are hiding. “So to get to Karakura town...”

“Anyone who was trying would have to defeat two sets of defenses to make the real Karakura town accessible again.”

“That sounds like it would take a lot of effort,” you admit, actually marveling a little at the fact that such an ambitious plan is even within the realm of possibility.

“Honestly, something like this has never been attempted,” Rukia admits, “which is why it is so important that we get this right, and that we are on hand for the possibility that Aizen would attempt to...”

Of course she had to pick that moment to turn around and look at you. The troubled expression takes a moment to give way to confusion, before becoming alarm. You glance over your shoulder to see what she's seeing: Ishida's opened what looks like a shadowy portal against the wall of the cell.

“What are you doing!?” Rukia shouts. “Renji!”

“What are you waiting for!?” you shout. “Book it!”

Ichigo is the first to leap into the shadows even as Renji fumbles with the keys to the cell, and Chad and Ishida charge in after him. Rukia stares at you in disbelief, and you can only shrug.

“I can't let those idiots go it alone,” you tell her. “Apologize to Riku for me.”

Then you jump into the shadows after your friends.

You find that suddenly the world is colder around you, like stepping from autumn into the dead of winter in an instant. The sky is dark as if the sun has gone down instantly, and then you begin to realize that the buildings around you have all changed as well.

“So this is the Schattenbereich,” Ishida muses, looking around at all the western-style buildings coated in icicles and frost. “I always thought it would be... warmer?”

“Where are we?” Chad asks.

“This is a separate dimension,” Ishida explains, “hidden within the shadows of the Seireitei.”

“So like a parallel universe?” you ask.

Ishida nods. “Yes, in a sense.”

“But doesn't that mean that Aizen's forces could just invade the Seireitei from here?” you press. “I mean, aren't they basically already in the Seireitei?”

“But if their objective is Karakura town that gains them nothing,” Ishida observes. “That is the conclusion my teacher reached when Captain Urahara asked.”

“Mom!” Rangiku shouts, bursting into Riku's office. “Ichigo and the others have...”

“I know,” she nods calmly. “I felt them leave.”

“Then you also know that Rukia and Renji went after them?”

Riku sighs, leaning back in her seat. “Remember, dear. We're under very strict orders... we can't go after them until after the fake Karakura town is set up, nor can I order anyone to go after them for me. Shunsui repeated himself several times to be sure I acknowledged those orders.”

Rangiku stares at her mother in dawning comprehension. “You knew this would happen when you gave them that assignment, didn't you?”

“I had a series of suspicions,” Riku shrugs. “I suspected that Ichigo, and even Ishida when put to it, wouldn't be stopped so easily. I also suspected Rukia would chase after them if Ishida really did have a way to pursue the attackers that took his mother, and that Renji would chase after Rukia.”

Rangiku nods quietly in understanding. “Will they be okay?”

“I have no idea,” Riku admits quietly. “But given the situation this is all I could do for them, at least until our own work is done.”

“Speaking of which, has Kaoru contacted us?”

“Should be any minute,” Rangiku informs her Captain.

“Good. Then I'll need to get to work,” Riku sighs, rising to her feet. “Tenri, please bring the reconnaissance photos. We'll need a reference to make this ploy convincing at all.”

“Of course we chased after you!” Rukia shouts. “The Captain would have my head if anything happened to you!”

“And my Captain would have my head if anything happened to Rukia!” Renji insists.

Ichigo sighs, holding his head in his hands. “Fine, fine. So you're here. Anyone else coming we should know about?”

Rukia shakes her head. “No one else will be joining us.”

“We need to move,” Ishida insists quietly. “I have no idea if anyone noticed our arrival, but we shouldn't take any chances.”

In the distance you can't help but notice that where the tower at the center of the Seireitei would be there is still a tower, larger and more monolithic, like a fortress built up around and atop a mountain. The top of the massive structure is crowned with a single two-tiered building clad in ice. The plain below it is covered in buildings, many of which seem to be in disuse, but some of which rise above the plain in strange shapes and irregular silhouettes.

One of those buildings seems fairly close... not a perfect match for where the Ninth Division headquarters would be were all the buildings literally transposed.

“There's a large building in that direction,” you declare, pointing it out to your companions. “We should take a look, try and get our bearings.”

“You want to go to the big fancy building?” Renji muses. “Isn't that the opposite of what we should be doing?”

“We have no idea what the differences between these buildings are,” Rukia explains, nodding to you. “I agree with Arisawa.”

Chad, for his part, simply starts marching in the direction you'd indicated. Ichigo shrugs and follows his friend, and the rest of the group starts marching after them.

It takes about fifteen minutes of this before anything happens, but eventually you hear voices approaching you from the right... they're set to cross your path at a crossroads about a hundred yards ahead.

“A patrol?” Ishida mutters.

“Seems that way,” Renji nods in agreement. “We can take 'em.”

“We should try to avoid them,” Rukia shakes her head.

“Through the buildings!” you hiss.

This suggestion seems to agree with everyone present, and so you find yourself vaulting a ten-foot wall and pushing your way into what seems like an abandoned office building. The patrol passes by your position with little to indicate that they noticed your presence, and you breath a collective sigh of relief.

Then you notice something.

“Hey, where are Renji and Chad?” you ask, glancing around the hallway. The building is still and cold, with frost lining the walls and glistening white in the darkened corners of the space furthest from the windows. You count yourself, Rukia, Ichigo, and Ishida... same as the first time you noticed, four people where there should be six.

Ichigo stares at you, then does a full turn in place.

“They made it over the wall with us,” he frowns. “I'm sure of it.”

“Then where...” you grumble.

Rukia taps on the nearest wall. “It seems solid to me.”

“So not an illusion,” Ishida concludes, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “How strange. Perhaps they went in a different way?”

“Then wouldn't one of us be able to feel them?” you ask.

“This is weird,” Ichigo puts words to the thought you all share. “What's wrong with this place?”

>We should search the building, see if they maybe came in through a lower level.

>other: I just hope my clothes also phase through them too. otherwise...
>I... might be able to poke my head through some of these walls. See if we can find them that way.
>>
You sigh, unsheathing and releasing Tōōkenju. “I'm going to do something weird, give me a moment.”

The concept is solidity... you need all of your solid-ness to be concentrated below your navel for this to work. You feel a little light-headed as your own power goes to work, and after taking a deep breath you plunge your head and torso through the nearest wall.

On the other side you see nothing out of the ordinary. It's just an empty room with a bare concrete floor, same with the hallway below you. The hallway immediately below you though has broken windows though, same as the one you broke into. The glass lies on the floor, and leaning deeper through the floor lets you see that there's no frost or dust lying over the pieces. So it's probably fresh.

“There's no sign of them,” you admit. “The windows downstairs were broken, and the shards aren't iced over.”

“So they were there not long ago,” Ishida summarizes. “So where are they now?”

“There's a staircase over this way,” Ichigo announces. “Let's go.”

“Hang on,” Rukia cautions him. “If Chad and Renji were downstairs they must have been able to see the stairs as well. So why have they not joined us yet?”

“Maybe they went the other direction?” Ichigo suggests.

Ishida however seems unconvinced. “I doubt that. Something certainly seems wrong here.”

“That may be true,” you admit, “but what other leads do we have?”

“None,” Rukia sighs.

>We could split up. Two of us could go downstairs and check while two hold this position.
>We should all go downstairs as a group. We need to try and find Chad and Renji.

“We should stick together,” you insist. “Ishida's on to something.”

The four of you move down the stairs to the hallway immediately below where you were standing, taking the stairs slowly. But when you reach the hallway something immediately strikes you as off.

“There's no glass!” you exclaim. All the windows on this floor are unbroken... and you know what you saw from upstairs when you peeked through the floor. “These windows were shattered inward... right here, and here.”

“You're sure?” Ichigo asks.

“What, do you doubt me?”

Ichigo shakes his head. “No... you just shoved your head through a floor. So... you know. Isn't there a chance you were mistaken?”

“None,” you insist. “I know what I saw.”

“It's possible the buildings here repair themselves” Ishida offers. “They're all reishi, same as the Seireitei.”

“Have you seen how buildings in the Seireitei are repaired Ishida?” Rukia scoffs. “They certainly do not repair themselves.”

“These are quincy we're talking about here,” Ishida counters.

“Hey, we don't need that right now,” Ichigo snaps. “Okay, so the windows aren't broken when they should be. What does it mean?”

“Did any of you notice anything when we came down the stairs?” you ask.

Nobody offers a response.

>Poke your head through the ceiling, see what you can see.
>If you didn't meet Chad and Renji they clearly went down the hall the other way. Do the same.

Can we poke our head outside and then get the hell out if it's clear? Also, can Rukia cast the Ten—whatever thing to talk to Renji?
>>
>>2152895
I'll make a ruling on this. If you can't locate the person you're trying to talk to you can't make the connection. Riku and Yoruichi have horseshit powerful reiatsu sensing so they can do it almost effortlessly, but other people need to use a tracking spell to do it if the target is too far.

And under some conditions, of course, the tracking spell can fail as well.

In a lot of ways. They're two Captains on a very short list who could totally ignore Sakanade and Suzumushi, and who could compensate to any appreciable degree against Kyoka Suigetsu, which was the intended effect. But having an over-developed sixth sense also makes feinting and surprise attacks almost useless, and lets them coordinate with each other in battle on a level other people can't match unless they're literally sharing thoughts.

“Hey, Ichigo?”

“Yeah?”

“Gimme a boost,” you tell him, pointing at the ceiling. “I wanna check something.”

After managing to balance carefully on your friend's shoulders and repeating the process using Tōōkenju's power, you poke your head up into the ceiling to find nothing. You even leap from Ichigo's shoulders, sinking into the solid surface up to your ribs before landing on the concrete and letting your tangibility return to... well, to a 'normal' distribution.

“What did you see?” Ishida asks.

“Nothing!” you tell him. “There's nothing up there, just solid... rock, or concrete, or something. No hallway at all!”

“That settles it,” Ishida declares. “The building isn't repairing itself, because we're not in a building. Whatever sort of space we're in is reorganizing itself as we pass from one room into the other.”

“How is that possible?” Rukia demands.

“No idea,” Ishida admits. “But it fits all the evidence. Chad and Ishida went up the stairs and ended up in a different space from the hallway we were in, and we came downstairs to a different place than they came through the windows below us.”

You poke your head out through one of the windows to find that instead of the exterior of the building, your head pops out into a dimly lit room... like it was a one-way mirror that merely made you think it was an exterior window.

“This is weird,” you mutter. “And worse, even if we know now what the trick is... do you have any idea for how we can break it?”

“I could probably break through into a different space using seele schneider,” Ishida sighs, tapping one of the walls lightly with his fingertips. “But if that just gets us into a space like the one we left, with no real way out, then it served no purpose.”

“We are being manipulated,” Rukia nods. “And cleverly too... but to what end?”

>If we let whoever's pulling the strings direct us, maybe we'll figure out what they want.

“I say we play along,” you sigh, “since the alternative is to just start breaking things with no real plan in mind.”

“Keep your eyes open for ways to turn things to our favor.”

You press on down the hallway, turning a corner and finding a similar hallway. Then you turn another right, then down another hallway, and another right. Almost to confirm your suspicions, you turn one more impossible right.

“So it's not just me, right?” Ichigo grumbles.

“Nope,” you sigh. “Someone's just messing with us now.”

Down a flight of stairs, along a hallway, then round a sharp corner and back the same direction down a new hallway, then up a long flight of stairs, which finally leads you to a large, open chamber. The hallway behind you closes up, leaving no clear way out of the space you've found yourself in.

“What now?” Ichigo grumbles.

“Now, you follow me,” a small voice replies.

You turn to face the newcomer, fists raised... only to spot a child, in what looks like some sort of Victorian era outfit.

“Hello, intruders,” the child greets you cheerfully. “My name is Picaro!”

“Is this your doing?” Ishida asks, gesturing at the wall where you came through into this chamber.

“Mmm mmm,” the child shakes her... his? The child shakes their head, indicating that they're claiming not to be in charge of the building's bizarre function.

“Then who?” Rukia asks.

The child, 'Picaro' it called itself, laughs. “Do you want to meet him?”

“Sure, okay,” you nod. “I guess there's nothing else to really do, we're already deep in the trap.”

Without a meaningful counterargument, the four of you follow the child through a doorway which appears in one of the walls of this chamber, then up yet another long stairway. Just when you were finally ready to make a snarky comment about the obsession this unseen manipulator seems to have with stairs you are led out into a smaller room than the last chamber.

“Ah, I see you have met my little side project,” a voice greets you. “An arrancar capable of reproduction... albeit through budding. Still, progress.”

The man who is speaking to you is bizarre... he wears a crown of sorts, almost like an Egyptian headdress complete with a gilded beard. He wears a mishmash of black and white facepaint... and a familiar white robe is hung over his shoulders.

“Kurotsuchi Mayuri?” Rukia realizes, her eyes wide.

The painted man stares at her. “I see, so you are a shinigami... one of the Ninth Division if I am not mistaken?”

“This is one of the traitor Captains?” Ichigo asks.

Kurotsuchi scoffs dismissively. “You are quite rude, do you know that young man?”

“Are you not a traitor?” Ichigo presses.

“From a certain point of view,” Kurotsuchi confirms.

“Then are we going to fight?” you ask.

“Oh my heavens no!” Kurotsuchi chuckles. “You see, I have people to do that for me now.”

He turns to leave you, pointing at the ceiling as he walks out through an opening with his 'creation' in tow. “If you attack through that ceiling you will emerge back into the surface level of the Schattenbereich.”

“Good luck!” he cheers you on with a mocking tone. “Give it your best, little humans.”

The opening snaps shut behind him, and a new gateway opens instead...

A squad of what appear to be quincies step into the room, seemingly confused at how they arrived here, followed shortly by four arrancars. One, with pallid white skin and messy blonde hair, points at your group with an alarmed shout.

“It's the enemy!” he calls out. “Dondachakka, the enemy is here!”

“The enemy!?” a large-bodied arrancar exclaims, before realizing what his partner is pointing towards. “Ah, Pesche! It's the enemy, ya know!”

“That's what I just said!” the first arrancar shouts, deivering a flying kick to his partner's face.

“That's just uncalled-for!”

The quincies merely stare in disbelief.

“I just can't get used to these guys,” one of them sighs.

“So, should we shoot these intruders now?” another asks.

“I guess this is Kurotsuchi's doing, somehow,” the first quincy realizes. “So probably. Yeah. Shooting would be a good plan.”

Ichigo draws his sword with lightning speed, as does Rukia. Ishida produces something that resembles a bow. You raise your fists... and the long-awaited battle with Aizen's forces finally begins.

What you're not certain of is where you should focus your efforts. Ishida moves to circle around to the left, keeping his distance while Ichigo rushes the quincy as they try and form up. Two of the five shift to track Ishida while the other three shoulder rifles and fire on Ichigo. Rukia raises her hand as she rushes the arrancar.

You decide to join Rukia against the arrancars, making that engagement a two on four fight.

“Shine, Zangetsu!”

Ichigo's zanpakuto releases, becoming... a spear? Since when has Zangetsu been a spear? Though you recognize the shape of a 'reclining moon' blade, a heavy head with a single curved edge, which certainly seems to fit the name better.

In the mean time you close with the arrancars, letting a sword strike slip through your body before concentrating as much mass and power into your hand as you can and clocking one of the four with it. The shot knocks him flat on his ass, and Rukia takes the opportunity.

“Some no Mae: Tsukishiro!”

The air in front of her begins to shimmer, and then crystalizes in an instant with the surprised arrancar still stuck inside it. Then the pillar crumbles, along with the prisoner trapped within.

“P-p-pesche!” the largest arrancar exclaims in panic as you and Rukia scoot closer to each other, preparing to cover for each other in the case of an immediate counterattack.

The blonde arrancar gulps. “I saw it too, Dondachakka... I saw it too! This isn't gonna be easy.”

“Aren't you two supposed to be fracciones or something?” the third arrancar, a broad-shouldered man with red hair and a mask over his mouth and nose like a hollow Hannibal Lector. “Get a hold of yourselves!”

“Aren't you all supposed to be natural-born warriors?” you taunt. “I'd be embarrassed in your place.”

Rukia edges closer, her blade raised, but the third arrancar remains in a fairly relaxed stance.

“Wrap, de Fuerza!” he declares, unleashing a wave of reiatsu as his body is transformed.

“Here we go,” Rukia mutters.

“Keep it simple,” you suggest.

“Agreed,” Rukia nods.

You rush in, with what would normally be considered reckless abandon. The arrancar no doubt sees it that way, seeing as he's actually chuckling as his sleeves stretch out towards you like the arms of a straightjacket... those are his own arms you realize, extending to inhuman proportions. They wrap and wind around your torso, tightening as if to crush your whole body like an empty soda can. He never gets the chance though, and his eyes widen when he realizes that you've literally slid through his grasp.

Then you loop an arm over both his arms, before locking the back of your wrist against his limbs to reverse the situation entirely.

“How did she do that!?” the blonde arrancar shouts in amazement.

“She's like a ghost, dontcha know!” his large partner adds.

“Shut up!” the ginger arrancar roars, turning his waist.

Uh oh.

The arrancar in your grasp lifts you bodily off the ground with his massively heightened strength, and slams you headfirst into the blonde arrancar. Then the both of you are sent flying into the third arrancar, leaving the three of you to land in a tangled pile against one of the walls.

Or more precisely, the two of them are on your back.

“Hey Dondachakka, we've got her!” the blonde one groans.

Then you roll out through the big one's legs, staggering to your feet.

“We don't got her...” the big one whimpers. “I thought we had her for sure, Pesche!”

“Well, can't win 'em all, Dondachakka!” Pesche declares, picking himself off and patting down his white outfit. “We gave it our best...”

There's a loud crash as Rukia narrowly avoids a cero.

“Don't you dare run from this fight!” the red-headed arrancar shouts. “Or I'm gonna have a talk with Master Nnoitorra!”

Both arrancars yelp in distress.

These guys are such idiots that it's hard to even know what they're thinking about doing. Their antics are a distraction at every turn.

But you shake yourself off. Ishida and Ichigo are making decent headway, with the latter battering the quincy around while Ishida takes carefully aimed shots into the melee. It's impressive that given how strong Ichigo has become these guys are even staying in the fight. If this is what a basic quincy solider handles themselves...

No time to think about that.

“What are you two even doing here?” you protest, rounding on the two clowns.

“What do you mean?” Pesche demands.

“We're here to fightcha, ya know!” Dondachakka declares.

“Really?” you shake your head as the fight continues to rage, completely ignoring you. Good.

“I thought you were here for comic relief,” you scoff.

“Why would you think that!?” Pesche demands of you again, setting you up perfectly.

“Because you're a joke!” you tell them, delivering the punchline to a gasp.

“Why would you say such a mean thing!?” Dondachakka blubbers. “We have feelings too, ya know!”

“Now you've gone and done it!” Pesche declares. “You've made my partner cry!”

“Maybe you shouldn't have brought a damn man-baby onto a battlefield,” you quip, your catty tone even surprising you a little.

“No!” Pesche gasps. “You didn't just say that.”

“I did,” you confirm.

“That's it!” Pesche shouts, vaulting into the air and landing with his knees on his partner's shoulders.

“What are you doing, Pesche?” Dondachakka asks in confusion.

“Let's show her that technique!” Pesche decides. “Come on, let's show her what we can do!”

“R-right!” Dondachakka shouts back, opening his mouth wide. The two arrancar charge two ceros, one yellow and the other purple, which slowly mix and blend into one before they release it.

It certainly looks impressive, but it passes straight through you of course.

The two arrancar stare at you with wide eyes. Dondachakka's massive square jaw hangs slack.

“I... completely forgot she could do that,” Pesche muses.

You glance over your shoulder to see Rukia staring at the spot where the third arrancar had been standing, now marked only by the man's feet. Little wisps of smoke trail from the ankles which end abruptly in two burned ends.

Even the quincy are surprised at the outcome.

“Neat,” you nod. “But do you have something that can actually hit me?”

“That...” Pesche replies hesitantly.

“That was our best attack ya know...” Dondachakka admits.

“Your funds will be wired to the usual account,” you joke, turning to join Rukia in dealing with the last of the quincy.

One goes down like a sack of potatoes when you slam your palm into his face and Ichigo sweeps his legs with Zangetsu's shaft. A second takes a reishi arrow in the shoulder that throws his aim off, allowing Rukia to electrocute him with kidō. The final quincy standing sighs in resignation as three attacks come at him from multiple directions: your ankle catches him in the crotch from behind, the power of your kick lifting him into the air where Rukia's hilt catches him under the sternum. Then the spine of Zangetsu's blade falls on his chest like a hammer, slamming him to the ground.

You spare a glance at the two arrancar, Dondachakka held in Pesche's arms like a princess.

“I think I peed a little,” Pesche whispers in terror.

Remind me how Tatuski's power is considered "Broken". In fighting game terms, All I can see is that she's able to shift her hitbox to anywhere within her body.

Also when Tatsuki does her "phase shift", does her clothes shift with her body? or does ghost physics say her clothes count as a separate entity and subject to clothing damage?

What does Ichigo think of Tatsuki's "phase shift" ability?

>Ichigo:
I know innate mastery of a zampakuto is a thing, but how do you feel about having to switch from Old Man Zangetsu's "Butcher cleaver sword" to Actual Zangetsu's "Guan Dao"?
Do you and Zangetsu still butt heads with each other?

A few moments pass as Rukia takes out a note pad and scribbles something that no doubt looks nothing like the concepts she's trying to convey. “This is the dangai, and this is a minor plane that exists within the dangai called a “valley of screams”. The idea is to swap a piece of that plane for a piece of Karakura town, then swap that piece of the valley for a piece of the Rukongai.”
>Riku:
So let me get this straight: This is planar swaps with 3 layers of inception starting from the top down in this order:

Rukongai (Disguised as Karakura Town) > Riku's personal realm > Real Karakura town

Is this correct? Have you talked with the twins yet? They've been on the fence for quite some time and need probably 1 days worth of briefing and catch up in order for them to make a solid decision. Have you considered putting them up for the Arrancar alliance admissions process? (that process having a captain reccommend an arrancar to 3 captains for judgement to see if they're fine with letting them work alongside Seireitei mentioned in the captain's meeting way back in thread #75) And have you considered having Kisuke administering that Hollow Regen serum to Yin (or was it Yang?) so she could regrow her arm back?
>>
>>2160159
>Renji
"You know, I used to ask questions like that."
>Ishida
"Know? Hours. Suspect? A few days. And I don't think anyone assumes it's a "secret" anymore."
>Mayuri
"Who says that isn't part of the experiment?"
>Riku/Yoruichi/Riku
"This qualifies as a bowl game now? Damn, every year these just get lamer and lamer. Seriously, when 7-6 teams are in bowl contention we've got too many bowls. What was the question?"
"Deflections aside, I think it's an uncomfortable question because someone's bound to be upset in the short term. I'm sure they'll all get over it though."
"Yeah... what she said, I guess."
>Masaki
"I'm kinda pulling for Tatsuki. Not that I don't like Rukia too, it's just... you only 'live' once, you know? When you've had a chance to slow down and think about it, you start to see things a bit differently."
>>
>>2160313
Tatsuki's power is broken because her power isn't phasing, it's "distribution". She uses that ability to dodge in combat and to focus her reiatsu even beyond the levels allowed by traditional hakuda, because those are the easiest and most practical applications and she hasn't had time to really hone her ability to use it in more esoteric ways.
>Ichigo
"It feels a lot more... god, what's the right word... 'complete'? Like it's something with actual techniques that you can use with it."
"They... still don't get along."
>Mayuri
"Scientist? You mean Szayelapporo Granz? Feh, I would hardly define such a man as a 'scientist'... more a cultist who worships knowledge as though it were some dark deity to be placated in exchange for patronage."
"Of course Nemu is 'progressing nicely'. After all I designed her myself... or do you mean to imply something mean about my abilities, hm? Are you perhaps applying to become my next 'research assistant', is that it? I keep petitioning Aizen for a replacement, but he seems to have quite unfairly implemented a policy of 'one per week' behind my back."
>>2160316
>Tessai
"Most enlightening."
>>2160323
>Riku
"Um... basically? I worked it out with Kaoru so that it serves as redundancy, but I haven't exactly thought about it since then. It's in whatever the right order is to force Aizen's Assholes to break two planar arrays."
"We may have spoken. Yin... or was it Yang? The one who was wounded has fully recovered, but they're lost and directionless now. I'd hardly want to force them to commit to something they haven't had a proper chance to consider. They'll make a decision eventually on their own, and it will be the right one for them."
"The process itself has never been properly used, to be fair. Some of the Captains were doubtless recognizing reality, not exercising their own judgment. So it would be an interesting test of the system."
>>
>>2160405
>Riku and Yoruichi
Have you thought of practicing exerting your divine wills in the Valley of Screams? You did attune the thing to your soul essence(s). It'll be a really wicked tool to use when the fight gets to that point. Having sudden Volcanic eruptions and Typhoons come out of nowhere and rearrange the terrain to Seireitei's advantage would be scary. Although on a smaller scale, maybe having a sudden terrain shift that disorients the enemy would still be a really good practical edge.

>Mayuri:
If you're in a divulgatory mood, what was the "Most engaging but trivial" experiment you've conducted in Silbern? Any trivial experiment that is irrelevant to the current shenanigans in Silbern nor Aizen's plans would do.
>>
>>2159957
"Not quite," you observe. The two arrancar left standing are clearly awed by the display.

“So, what do we do about these idiots?” Ichigo asks, jerking his thumb at them. “Seems kinda wrong to kill 'em, doesn't it?”

The duo glance nervously at you in unison, expecting some kind of reply.

“I dunno,” you sigh. “I'm better at the fighty sorta decisions, the big picture strategic stuff is more Ishida's game.”

The duo glance nervously at Ishida, who raises his hands. “Don't look at me. I don't want to be responsible for setting a precedent here either way.”

The duo glance back at Ichigo.

“We could just tie 'em up and leave 'em.”

They glance at Rukia, who so far has kept her thoughts to herself.

“If we had them take the wounded back to wherever the nearest barracks are,” she suggests. “If Captain Kusajishi were present she would point out that wounded soldiers take up more resources than dead ones.”

The duo turn to Ishida. “We could also tell them to take a message to Aizen. Throw them into disarray on the eve of their big plan to invade Karakura town.”

“And make it harder to do what we came for,” Ichigo points out.

>Not necessarily, if they send out more patrols the guard on your moms might be lighter.

“Hang on,” Ichigo interrupts. “Why should we trust these guys?”

“We won't,” you mutter back, leaning a bit closer and lowering your voice. “But we may learn something even despite that.”

“Hang on,” Pesche counters. “We're not exactly Aizen's favorites you know.”

“Oh?” you ask.

Pesche and Dondachakka exchange a nervous glance before Pesche actually explains. “Our mistress had a falling out with Aizen... we're pretty much being used as... how would you say it, Dondachakka?”

“Hostages?” the large arrancar offers.

“Yeah,” Pesche nods dejectedly. “We're totally hostages.”

“So you're saying you have nothing to lose?” Ishida asks.

“Wait...” Rukia mutters. “This 'mistress' of yours is Neliel tu Odelschwanck?”

“Yeah, how did you know?”

“She is with my Captain,” Rukia explains.

“Well... most of the important folks have their own palaces,” Pesche explains, “if that helps. This one used to be Lady Neliel's.”

“Your mistress had a palace where all the walls and hallways could be reconfigured?” you ask skeptically.

“Well, all the palaces can be changed to suit their owners' whims,” Dondachakka explains as if it's the simplest thing in the world. “That's just common sense ya know.”

“They're all like this?” you repeat.

“Yup, so far as I know,” Pesche nods.

“Great,” Ichigo sighs, head in his hands. “Just great.”

“Anything on the two women who were brought here?” Rukia presses.

Pesche shakes his head. “If I had to guess I'd say they were in Silbern... but that's just a guess.”

“Silbern?” you ask.

Ishida nods. “Bambietta Basterbinne mentioned it as being the headquarters building.”

“You know that psycho too?” Pesche shivers.

“That psycho is my instructor,” Ishida scowls. “Stop that.”

Pesche pokes his head out from behind Dondachakka. “You gotta be kidding me! If you're her student that makes you just as scary!”

“Cut that out,” you sigh. “Bambietta doesn't seem that bad, and freaking out like this is just wasting our time.”

But of course they don't speak any other language because JAPAN BEST JAPAN STRONGEST ECONOMY JAPAN HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH GAIJIN GO HOME JDF JDF JDF! and shit but yeah, it makes sense. Where the hell would Pesche and Dondechaka come from? Alabama. I'm guessing Alabama.
>>
>>2162492
A menos is literally a pile of souls all folded together into one, so why wouldn't they at least retain some understanding of languages their component souls knew? It's not like any of the souls you see in the series who lost their memories were incapable of communicating.
>>
>>2162510
I don't think any single hollow has ever shown to remember any other soul's memories. This is an Occam's Razor situation right?

We're not given any evidence as to how or why they speak. They just do. It's safest to assume they just intrinsically know how to speak their languages based on some metaphysical concept. Which they do, it's just a device for the reader's convenience since they could be speaking some actual ghost language and not a real language at all (even though we know they aren't since Ichigo and Co. all understand everyone else). There is just some reason why these ghost cannibals all speak the same language as the ghost police and the living schmucks which in and of itself should be impossible due to how language evolves over time. The biggest issue is that some Shinigami who never leave the SS also speak perfectly fine as if they spend a ridiculous amount of time just learning modern dialects and such, like why would the Old Man who is over a thousand years old speak modern Japanese? Especially considering how he's a staunch traditionalist and people live for so long they have no reason to actually change how they speak since the only real change in language would be where the fresh souls come in via the Rukongai and there aren't enough of them in influx to noticeably change the language. It's just a big plot hole.

Really since this is fanfic you can just substitute any explanation you want, which hilariously is more than Kubo gives.

At least in this case Omoikane no mikoto (full name meaning "many-mind's-thought-combining-deity") is responsible for smoothing things out, in spite of the fact that the Monk constantly fucks with how things are named.

Whereas I'm increasingly tilted that the next TYBW isn't the character I've been explicitly saving for since getting fucked hard by the last TYBW summons.

Either I throw some orbs at BEST YACHIRU and lower the count I'll have for Yoruichi, or I fall even further behind the curve in PvP and keep saving. OR I pull on whatever and get the shaft, which is always an option too. There's no way this feels good other than extreme good fortune.

You decide that these two morons are fairly innocuous on their own, and that if you leave them to their own devices you can't be absolutely sure that they're not going to squeal on you. So it makes sense to not just tap them for guidance, but also ensure that they stick near you for the time being.

“Then you can get us to this tower thing,” you nod. “Right?”

“Yeah...” Pesche intones, “I'm... really not sure I wanna do that.”

“It's a good way to get killed, dontcha know!” Dondachakka adds.

“As opposed to staying here and waiting for that boss guy you mentioned?” Ichigo asks, raising an eyebrow.

“I'm sure you'll have a lot to report to him,” Ishida agrees.

The duo shiver in unison. “On second thought that sounds lovely!”

“It's nice this time of year ya know! What with the... ice... and the cold...”

You and Rukia share a skeptical glance, but keep quiet.

“Well, Ichigo,” Ishida sighs, pointing straight up. “Think we could get you to destroy the ceiling for us?”

“Yeah,” Ichigo nods. “Shouldn't be a problem. What, that bow of yours still doesn't do powerful shots?”

“Ginrei Kojaku specializes in inescapable volley fire,” Ishida explains.

“So that's a no, then,” Ichigo smirks, spinning Zangetsu by its shaft and resting the spine of its blade against the top of his outstretched palm.

In a flash of light he pushes his left hand against the halberd's head, launching a powerful arc of energy high over your heads and taking out a massive chunk of ceiling. The debris falls towards you, as well as towards the fallen quincy, only for Ichigo and Ishida to intercept it piece by piece, breaking it into pebbles that land like a harmless grey rain.

“Lead the way,” Rukia orders, pointing Pesche and Dondachakka out through the hole.

Your group of six manages to avoid the patrols for nearly a full half hour, but as you draw near to another one of the “palaces” your luck runs out.

“There you are!” a man with short red hair and a piece of porcelain mask over his left eye proclaims from atop a nearby wall. “And here I was starting to wonder where you'd gotten to... I see you picked up some local guides?”

“How could you tell that?” Ichigo asks with a frown. “They bolted the second they felt your reiatsu.”

Sure enough, Rukia is forced to return to you with a shunpo, dragging the two wayward arrancar behind her yelping all the way.

“You didn't have to be so mean to us ya know!” Dondachakka protests.

“Then you shouldn't have tried to abandon us!” Rukia barks, doing her best imitation of her Captain. “If you have to stand aside do so...”

A cero forces the shinigami to sidestep mid-sentence.

“Well dodged,” the arrancar atop the wall interrupts. “I guess you weren't ignoring me after all.”

“Who the hell are you supposed to be?” Ichigo demands.

“Asguiaro Ebern,” the arrancar declares. “And I've come for your lives.”

“You can't have them,” you reply in a flat tone.

“I'm not asking,” Ebern counters as several other figures in identical skull-like masks join him atop the wall. “Exequias... attack!

The dozen identical figures rush into battle, drawing swords...

This guy... he's planning to use these identical guys as fodder while he releases? That may not be what you'd do, but then again from what you've heard about Aizen you really doubt the sort of subordinates who'd choose to serve him would share your thoughts on sacrificing others like pawns.

“Strike down, Lanza Estrellarse!” Ebern roars as you rush into the center of the attacking minions, knowing now that he really does intend to sacrifice them all. His right arm begins to morph, liquid porcelain flowing freely.

“Tōōkenju!” you shout, using your zanpakuto to slip through the cloned fodder just as Ebern's arm finishes morphing into what looks like a massive cannon, a heavy octagonal barrel running from his elbow all the way down his arm and several feet past where his hand should be, with a round-shaped projection above his elbow that seems to protect his bicep, shoulder, and neck.

Your fist meets his weapon, then passes through it so that your blow strikes his chest squarely.

“Hakuren!” you hear Rukia shout behind you as most of the fodder are already falling, a wave of ice rippling towards you and your foe. You manage to avoid the ice by kicking off a reishi platform with all the force in your body concentrated on one foot, though Ebern has his own answer.

Don't you dare mock me!” he shouts, firing a powerful blast that not only disperses the effects of Rukia and Sode no Shirayuki's attack but punches a massive crater in the ground near where Ebern had been standing moments ago.

That hole looks awfully deep...”

“The Schattenbereich is hollow?” Ishida realizes aloud.

“Just as the Seireitei has open spaces and tunnels beneath it,” Rukia acknowledges.

“That is not the Schattenbereich,” Ebern admits. “As this shadow realm lies parallel to the Seireitei, so too does the Forest of Menos rest beneath it... a trick managed by Lord Aizen to facilitate our conquest of all creation.”

“A bridge between the three spiritual realms...” Ichigo mutters. “Great.”

>Keep on Ebern. That bigass cannon can't be great in close quarters combat. You can dodge any potential friendly fire with your zanpakuto.

Without hesitation you take the side that has the bigass cannon, attacking the arrancar where he's braced himself at the top of a wide wall.

This time Ebern's clever enough to sidestep you rather than raise his weapon to block, and Ishida uses the opening to shoot a cascade of glowing blue arrows into the underside of his gun barrel, pushing it out of line. Ichigo however chips the edge of the cannon with his halberd when he finds his assault halted.

“Hainawa!” Rukia shouts, extending a chain to wrap around the shoulder shield and hold it fast, with the barrel pointed entirely in the wrong direction.

“Damn you!” Ebern curses, reaching under his right arm and extending a palm. “Cero!”

Rukia has to back off, giving Ebern a chance to push Ichigo back to the ground which in turn gives you a chance to slip through his guard and plant your foot firmly in his gut.

He winces in pain, but he locks the shoulder guard tight against his bicep and the base of his neck as he lets the weight of the artillery piece drag the right side of his body down. He turns into a bladed stance, arm aimed straight at Ichigo.

“You fools!” he crows. Does he mean to fire that thing without bracing? No... he's formed a substantial enough reishi platform in midair to give him a stable shooting platform, the raw power of his attack will do the rest.

The weapon fires again, shattering the ground at Ichigo's feet and causing him to slide almost comically into the crater. He slides to the edge, staring down into the void Ebern had punched through to as he waves his hands for balance.

“Wow, that was close!” he declares.

“I'll help you Ishida!” you hear Dondachakka's voice as the portly arrancar runs to help pull Ichigo out of the precarious position... but trips at the end of his sonido.

With a shout of alarm Ichigo struggles to maintain his footing, but with a louder shout of alarm Dondachakka grabs onto him for balance... and both of them fall into the crater.

Not a single person moves for a moment, as even your enemy struggles to figure out if what he thinks just happened really did. You suddenly remember he's there and turn to face him, and the look on his face is one of complete disbelief.

“That... wasn't what I expected to happen,” Ebern admits.

“I'll get them!” Ishida shouts at you. “We'll join you there Arisawa, Kuchiki!”

And then in a move that baffles all of you a second time, Ishida leaps into the crater.

“Are your friends even real?” Ebern asks, equal parts annoyed and amused by the sound of it.

“Friends feels like something of an overstatement at this point,” Rukia grumbles.

“What the fuck!?” you demand of the universe, purely in a rhetorical fashion as you don't expect an answer. “How is it so damn hard to just stick together!?”

“Get him bound,” you tell Rukia, “I'll deliver the finishing blow.”

“I can do that,” Rukia agrees. “Second.”

“Got it.”

You charge, using your fists to carefully push Ebern's cannon in any direction but at you and Rukia as your partner sets up... when you hear her voice you instinctively dodge.

“Hakuren!”

Ebern manages to avoid the relatively slow-moving ice with a scowl. “Dumb bitch, did you really thing that would...”

Then he notices you attacking from behind, fist cocked back dramatically. He tries to wheel around to shoot at you... only to find a glowing golden chain of kidō exploding through your chest. His eyes widen as the chain wraps around his chest, pulling him in towards you and leaving you deep in his fighting space. He didn't realize that Rukia had used shunpō to get behind you, moving at her absolute limits and taking advantage of his moment of distraction.

“Gotcha!” you shout. “Ikkotsu!”

The blow is vicious, snapping the kidō like you've brushed away a spiderweb and sending Ebern crashing through a stone wall and leaving him in the bottom of a deep crater.

Thankfully you manages to keep your wits, and dodge as a powerful blast tears through the air to your side.

“What does it take to keep this guy down?” you wonder aloud. “I hope Chad and Pineapple are having better luck...”

You are Abarai Renji, and you're proud to call yourself the Lieutenant of Sixth Division. You've lost the shinigami and you've lost the humans and now you're stuck with this big quiet guy in the middle of enemy territory.

“So... what do you think is with these statues?” you ask awkwardly, trying to start up some kind of conversation with the young human.

“I know, right?” he replies. You're... not really sure what sort of response that was.

“At least they're not all that powerful,” you allow. The big stone men were big and imposing, but you could easily get by with Shikai against them: in fact Zabimaru has been getting bored. At least according to Snake they're bored, Monkey's probably not even paying attention. Even this boy can punch the statues' limbs off for crying out loud... you really expected more from Aizen.

“It's disquieting,” Chad admits. Ah, so he does have normal people feelings... he's just way softer spoken than you'd expect given his size.

“Well, the more fuss we raise the better!” you suggest. “We may not be able to fight with the others as a team but we can draw some attention off 'em.”

“Simple,” Chad nods quietly. “I like it.”

“See?” you grin. “We're gettin' to know each other already!”

You lead Chad down an alleyway towards the source of a series of slow, rumbling thuds that seem to reverberate for hundreds of meters all around: the unmistakable sound of the stone giants.

“Hey!” you shout, as soon as you see the first one. “Over here ya big idiot!”

The statue pivots to face you, only for Chad to slam his black and purple fist into the side of its head.

“Nice one!” you cheer your human partner on as he sticks the landing. In response you get a confident, bordering on cocky, thumbs-up.

Now it's your turn. “Roar, Zabimaru!”

Zabimaru's fangs tear into the leg of a second statue, sinking deep as you wrap the flexible blade around and use it to pull your victim into Chad's opponent. The force of the blow is enough to crack stone in a terrible sound, like a mountain coming undone at the seams and crushing everything unfortunate enough to have taken root at its feet.

The statue looks like it's trying to get up when Chad knocks its head off as well.

“More?” he muses... and sure enough your battle seems to have drawn the attention of even more of the statues.

Some dozen of them, to be precise.

“Ho-lee SHIT!” you shout. “That's more like it... now come and get us you slow morons!”

You and Chad take off running, making as much noise as possible and causing an entire district of this Seireitei-like city to rumble.

“It's working!” you shout to Chad.

“I noticed!” he replies, his voice only just noticeably raised.

After taking a few wild turns, you realize something: the statues start to lose you if they don't have line of sight. That means they can't sense reiatsu.

Also, you've noticed there are more of them closing in on your location.
>1/2
>>
>>2172643
There are too many of these monsters to deal with using just your Shikai... your attempts to get their attention have been far too successful. You begin thinking of ways to slip their notice once more, only to find yourself face to face with a statue.

A human-sized statue.

One of many.

Thousands of them, standing in neat lines that seem to stretch for kilometers, all wearing stony coats of scales and swords at their waists. There are bronze horses, archers, chariots, and rank after rank of foot soliders here, all in a wide space set amid high walls... or perhaps down into a low hill with buildings all around, it's hard to tell from where you're standing.

The army, and it is an army, you'd guess larger than any two Divisions in the Gotei 13, stands motionless and impassive as the mobile stone giants close in.

>There has to be an exit on the far side of this army. The statues might not even follow you in here.

Using it here would be a waste.

You could crush all of these stupid statues of course, all in the blink of an eye, but you don't want to rely on that sort of power only a few hours into the invasion effort. It's not likely you can sustain that sort of effort for one thing, and for quite another you don't want to risk the possibility that someone might be watching.

After all, nobody aside from possibly Captain Kusajishi or Rangiku realizes you've managed it.

“Hey Chad, let's shake these idiots,” you suggest, pointing at a slightly uneven gap between a foot soldier statue and a chariot. “Just stand still.”

Chad nods at you in silent understanding, and stands where you indicated. A few statues over you find a small gap of your own and stand in it, sealing Zabimaru and sheathing it at your side. And not a moment too soon.

The massive statues stop at the entrance you passed through. Several more seem to stop at the far opposite end of the massive assembly area, and even more seem to stop at the tops of the high walls to peer down at you amid the field of statues.

Several minutes pass in silence, as you try and hide even your breathing.

Then the statues start to head away in all directions, back the way each came for the most part. You guessed they might not come in here to avoid crushing all these smaller statues, but it's good to confirm that these things will refuse to follow you into some places.

You breathe a sigh of relief. “Alright, we're in the clear.”

“That worked,” Chad muses quietly, seemingly surprised.

Alright, I may need to wrap up soon. So I'll write this update and then we'll see where we stand.

You want to get out of here, but not by one of the main entrances. Instead you point to the top of one of the high walls. “Think you can follow me up there?”

Chad looks up where you're pointing and nods.

“Then let's go,” you nod.

You move towards the wall, past rows of soldiers... but you stop short for a moment as something catches your eye.

“It's like it's staring at me,” you grumble, not liking this at all. The clay soldier really does look like it was fired so that its head was facing exactly towards you.

Chad stops, looking over is shoulder at another clay soldier... which is looking over its shoulder back at him.

“Weird,” Chad agrees.

You press on, only to find that the statues are no longer facing the same way... here they're facing inward, but you never saw them move. You turn around to find that the statues behind you are now facing you as well.

“We... need to not be here,” you mutter. “Chad, go for the wall!”

“I'm afraid I cannot allow that,” a voice greets you.

“Who?” Chad demands.

You crane your head, struggling to find where the voice is coming from.

“I am Shao Gow,” the voice clarifies, “and I believe you have already noticed my resurreccion: Prefecto de los Caballeros. You are two of the invaders from the living world... my honor in the service of Lord Salao and Lord Aizen demands that I kill you here.”

“Your honor demands that you hide yourself like a coward?” you scoff. “Aizen and this 'Lord Salao' of yours might not be worth much.”

“What do you mean, hiding?” Shao muses almost playfully. “I am right here.”

When you realize it, your eyes widen.

Thousands of infantry, archers, horsemen... all turned to face the two intruders in their midst.

“Damn,” Chad mutters in what must be the understatement of the year.

And on that note, I'm calling it a night. Thanks for showing up, hope you enjoyed the read, and I look forward to seeing you next week.

I may do an omake that will be ready super early on Monday morning, but other than that don't expect to hear much from me during the week itself.

Thanks for runnning. When are Brendan Fraser and Jet Lee going to show up?
>>
>>2172968
If by "Jet Lee" you actually mean Zhao Gao, the eunuch responsible for the Second Emperor conspiracy, then he's already here. Brendan Fraser's not showing up.

>Zhao Gao, the eunuch responsible for the Second Emperor conspiracy, then he's already here
Wait... wasn't Sung sun killed by a eunech...? Unless I'm reading too much into that...
>>
>>2173231
That would be Wei Zhongxian, another "corrupt eunuch" of the short-lived Tiangqi emperor of 1620. He was infamous for his alleged role in eliminating a philosophical school which had impeached him and was calling for his removal from court.

This eunuch, Zhao Gao, served the first three Emperors until 207bc. He's in many ways the prototypical "corrupt eunuch", and may well have been related to the Wei king deposed by the first Qin emperor during the consolidation of China. Which if true would explain why he ran the entire Qin dynasty into the ground, fudging the line of succession to put idiots on the throne and having the legitimate heirs killed, having his political rivals framed for treason and their families killed, plotting to assassinate the third emperor, etc.

As a side note, I've decided to get you guys something for Christmas. So check back sometime after tomorrow morning and there will be an Omake.

“Wow,” you mutter as the Seireitei Christmas party takes a definite step in the direction of the weird. Your wife has just arrived, carrying a massive bag over her shoulder. But what's truly stunning is what she's wearing: a red, hooded haori with fur trim over a “Santa” outfit that would make a blind man blush.

“I didn't know Santa wore thighhighs,” you muse, taking another sip of what Kenpachi swore up and down was 'authentic' eggnog... but you think he confused the recipe with glühwein, because it's very red and quite strong.

“Someone's auditioning for the naughty list,” Yoruichi jokingly reprimands you.

“Well, who knows better what list I should be on?” you mutter with a smirk as she strides past you, her pace only just faltering as she considers your words.

To her credit, she soldiers on admirably. “For Captain Zaraki, who's been a relatively good boy... a new comb!”

Yoruichi sets to work passing out a few well-chosen gifts to the Captains and officers present, many of whom are by now quite sauced and a few of whom don't understand that they're being playfully mocked by “Santa's” selections for them. But you can't help noticing that some of your dearest friends are conspicuously absent.

Which is why an hour after the Seireitei's party officially ends, you find yourself on a sandy beach in the middle of nowhere in particular, dressed out in red with white fur trim.

“Merry Christmas!” you declare, setting a comparatively smaller bag in the sand in front of you.

Halibel looks at you with mild curiosity, while Starrk doesn't even wake up.

“Christmas?” Apacci asks with a frown. “What's that and why should I be merry about it?”

“You... don't get out often enough,” you lament. “But it's a Christian holy day.”

“I've heard something about that,” Starrk admits, still flat on his back. “Somethin' about a zombie savior rising from the dead?”

“That's not even close,” you sigh, “but the details aren't important. What matters is it's an excuse to do nice things for the people you care about. Get them gifts, spend time with them... and I know I haven't spent nearly as much time with you as I'd like... as much as I should have...”

“The situation is understandable,” Halibel offers calmly. “However, even if not strictly necessary... I for one appreciate this gesture.”

“Thank you.”
>1/2
>>
>>2176067
A smile creeps across your lips as you pass out your gifts: noise canceling headphones for Starrk, every kind of bat and sports racket you could think of for Lilynette, an antique hairbrush for Sung-Sun, and an ornate buckle for Mila Rose's sword belt.

Then you hand Halibel a small package.

“It's a bathing suit,” you explain. “I know you're fond of the water here, so you can swim in this.”

“Thank you,” she nods, her tone dignified and quiet as usual but betraying a hint of amusement as well. You think she's mostly been swimming in the nude since she suddenly had water available again. But the message is clear: at some point soon people will see her, and modesty might be something she'd prefer to maintain once the other shinigami know she exists.

“What is the purpose of such a thing?” Mila Rose grumbles. “It hardly covers much.”

“There is an implicit promise,” Halibel explains to her companion. “One that means more than the gift itself.”

“And last...” you announce, producing a package for Apacci.

Inside is a set of knives and a flat board... cooking tools.

“I know you've taken an interest in cooking,” you explain, “so I...”

You don't get to finish before Apacci's arms are around your middle. Instead you just smile and enjoy the moment... no more words required.

“Well now,” a voice greets you, “I see you were right. I do know what list to put you on...”

You find another cup of spiced wine pressed into your hands, just a little of what your wife has brought for the arrancar in their secret home between worlds. A small cup of cheer in a long, complicated life... a cup you're happy to be able to share.

“And what do you want for Christmas, little miss?” Yoruichi asks you.

Your smile alone could say it all. “You know... I can't think of a single damn thing I don't already have.”

“Merry Christmas, Yoruichi.”

“Merry Christmas, Riku.”

I don't think so, I'd take some convincing to get onboard with the basic concept there.

As for Thunderkitty, patience. Missing the last TYBW gacha just meant I had to adjust my team: I doubt HW Yoruichi, BroKen, and TLA Ichigo are gonna be irrelevant any time soon, so I can continue saving orbs in peace even if I don't get murdermom.

I don't know how you do it, but these keep getting more and more adorable.
Iwish finding good Yoruichi pics wasn't like finding a unicorn. Pretty sure this one's been posted before.

>>2176080
I'm gonna be able to do 2 or 3 summons trying to get her, and I just know I'm only going to get Yachiru, the one I /really/ don't need. Or maybe I shouldn't try and bump my orb bank up to 3000 for Thunderkitty. This is what I get for having principles. And being poor.
>>
And to conclude things tonight, merry Christmas to all of you and I hope the rest of the year treats you all well. Thanks for always turning out: without your votes and your enthusiasm none of this would have been possible.

See you all next time when we pick the story back up!

They're gonna have an individual banner with her again, so I'm limiting myself to three multis on that: more if I pull a 5* that's not her.
I've been saving orbs since the end of the last round, so even after throwing 750 at Unohana's single banner I'll have 3k for Yoruichi. But it means NO SUMMONING other than that, regardless of what comes up.
I've got that image somewhere.
>>
>>2176100
>I found that pic right as your reply popped up
Are you psychic?

Also, I think what I'm going to do is only try for her if the first banner's double chance. In 3 summons on the Christmas one, I got two Halibels, a Hiyori, and two Ururus, and the dupes were both in the same summon. So maybe I'll be super lucky again.

Well look at the bright side, no more Gin.

What, why are you all giving me that look?
>>
>>2179541
At least they didn't make Kenny a NAD character. Again. Really wish I didn't have to spend 1000 orbs to have a good chance of getting one of them though.

And that I spent a summon getting Fullbring Ichigo only to get a free chance at pulling him like half a month later. They planned that shit.
>>
>>2179650
At least step-downs are 11+ free pulls for a chance at more orbs for the single banners or the last banner, with a very small chance of getting a TYBW banner character for free.

11+ because we have no word yet whether the singles reset each day.
>>
>>2179623
Sad part though is no more HW Yoruichi if I pull Unohana. She goes on Unohana as a 25% NAD link with all the kit she's got now.

I may have to give Kenny the axe and use him on Power Yoruichi for the DR links.
>>
>Just got orange Unohana off a 4/5* Ticket
Well, there goes my luck for MurderMILF. I hope you guys have a better time.
>>
>>2184015
I feel like I'm either going to pull her on one of my free pulls or not at all.
