Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=stranded+mech+quest

You are Captain Alex, Proxima Aquarii Federation, 4th Fringe Machine Infantry. When heading to a routine exercise, you and your mech ended up somewhere other than outside the backwater base on a polluted world you called home.

Now you're stuck in a world that's verdant, green, and full of life, where people use 'magic' and gods rule. You are pretty sure it is a sophisticated LARPer's personal planet, but nobody knows what you are talking about.

You are an ace pilot, the elite of mech operators, and you pilot the Newt, a durable and quick military mech. You can't seem to use up your ammo. You have two crewmates, Hilda, a convicted witch, and Seirye, an elven slave under a mind spell that serves as a mechanic.

You have currently left the elven city to avoid a royal knight on your trail in the dead of night. You're currently in a hidden library under the river. Alone. Your team is asleep.
>>
>>2146522
Your search for a catalogue of the books in the library leads to no results. You look around, but there seems to just be eerie silence... actually, not even the flames of the candles make a noise. Your footsteps are silent on the carpet, but... you get this unnerving feeling.

Upon looking at the books, you find they are organized by subject. A pathway leads to the back, which holds braziers, flickering silently...

Occasionally you turn in the bookshelves, feeling like something is watching you, but nothing is there.

The statue near the entrance is odd, almost as if it is heading to the door...

>What is your next course of action?
>>
>>2146531
Carefully inspect the statue, then look for something of a beastiary, knowledge of the creatures that inhabit this world that we may encounter will be useful.

You reach the statue. It's a short-haired woman, a bit cute, if you were asked. The statue holds a book in her stone grip, one you can't get out. A symbol of Mirna is worn on her stone cloak.

She's looking back over her shoulder on the way to the door... Oddly, even thouh it seems to have no visible connection to a water source, on occasion a droplet of water forms in her stone eyes, dripping to the floor.

The sense of unease grows... perhaps it might be a good idea to learn that dark magic spellbook you have in your mech, where it's safe... or you can continue to investigate the library. Between the silent braziers beckons the ornate doorway, deeper in.

>What do you do?

>What do you do?
How strong are we? Are we capable of carrying the statue back with us?

Otherwise, head back, read up, come back with backup when everyone's awake again.

Alert mode. We read this fable before, polarize our visor like we do when we are in space, and switch to infra red, proceed with gun out and look for the shrine, we need guidance and only one person can give it to us right now. this way if we encounter a stone turning gaze our visor should protect us.
>>
>>2147199
Welp. That's not the kind of stoning we'd enjoy. Let's get back to the mech and consult with Hilda. And books.

Recalling old fairy tales, you flick the polarization setting in your visor on. The world shifts in tint as the visor becomes reflective. You swap your vison to infrared, blacking out the screen as it becomes rendered by your alternative vision. Pistol drawn, you scan the room.

The room is too warm to render anything against the backdrop. The only exits are the door in the back, and the door behind you.

If there is a threat in here (which seems likely,) it's a good thing you are alone. Hilda and Seirye have little in the way of protection. Although, you just have a pistol.

You could retreat to your mech, or you could try the door behind the braziers. Something movves on top of the bookshelves, or was it your imagination? Nothing is up there, nothing's around it...

You are very close to the door, the statue is facing the door, looking back towards the shelves.

>>2147486
Try to get some height for better vision. Perhaps climb a shelf or a stair. Either the shelves are interfering with our vision or whatever's here isn't producing any heat, and eliminating one of these would help in identifying what we're facing.

>>2147630
Wouldn't our combat role be more akin to that of a tank crew rather than an air force pilot? To begin with, our mech seems to be designed for prolonged operation rather than short missions.

For that matter, are there actually any mechs capable of sustained flight in this setting?
>>
>>2147736
Well it was noted that mechs can operate in space, but you probably don't want to fly too much since it places you out of cover and thus paints a huge target on you. However it might just mean it is only vacuum proof and can fight on the Moon or Ceres or something.
>>
>>2147830
>>2147736

Actually... Your mech has electromagnets built into the feet, so it can operate on capital ships and defend them, but it's mostly meant for planets without atmosphere or moons.

Not many newts have sustained flight modules, though.
>>
>>2147736
this, but be very careful not to damage any thing, this could just be a guardian who is supposed to ward off vandals and thieves. In all likely hood it isn't a guardian and we shouldn't treat it like one beyond going out of our way to respect these books.

Alternatively, this could be a test of sorts and who ever set it up wants to see how we will handle this situation.

You climb atop a bookshelf. Perhaps not the most tactically wise decision, but you need vision. From the new vantage point, the sense of unease grows.

Something IS watching you, you know it. You turn towards whatever the feeling comes from and see nothing, but the hairs on your neck are standing on end.

The whole room is too warm, you can't track any movement. The heat ripples on the edge of your vison, but when you look there is nothing.

Then... you hear something. upping your volume, you hear... breathing. Something akin to a beast's breathing. Whatever it is, it sends chills through you. You can't single out where it is coming from, except for in the bookshelves.

Interestingly, you don't recall any of this heat in the moonpool, it might be confined to this room...

>>
>>2150029
We got a camera in our suit? Video a pan of the room - both IR and visible spectrums (without actually looking at it ourselves), with audio included - and bug out back to the mech. We'll review the footage later to see if we can work out what we're facing.

You turn on your cameras, on all forms of scanning. Your systems don't pick up anything but you face towards the general location of the breathing, moving back towards the door. The breathing pauses then starts to get louder and faster. It's on approach.

There is nothing on your sensors! You pull back to the door. Briefly you entertain the notion of taking the statue, but that would be a fool's errand.

You backpedal through the door, out of the heat. You hear a low growl of possible disappointment, then the breathing dims. You turn down your volume, saving the setting for later.

You climb back into your mech. The spellbooks lie on a passenger seat in the cockpit. Your crew sleeps below. it's been 6 hours since the party.

You try the spellbooks. It seems that the spell basics do not apply to you, as you are unable to perform even the base functions. Witchcraft proves to be the same.

Basic corruption yields different results, however. Though each spell listing is missing pieces, the execution is similar, and you are able to piece together a spell that you actually manage to cast!

>You have learned Corruption. A basic spell of Davar's magicians. This spell works by increasing the potency of certain thoughts in the mind of the target. Repeated use of this spell (6+ casts) will turn the target into a succubus. Use on a mindless organic target will cause the end result.
Corruption causes a drain of magic and heat when cast, repulsing magical creatures.

With this new spell learned, you climb down to awaken Hilda. She groans and stares at you groggily.

"Unyea?" She blinks a couple times.
"Hilda, Is there a creature that is invisible that turns people to stone?" You ask.
The witch's eyes widen as she glances around,
"W-wha..."
You repeat the question. Hilda gulps.
"Why? Did you encounter one?" She looks a bit scared.
"...if I had?"
"...that's a Sculptor. It's an invisible, intelligent beast that turns its victims to stone. It hunts mages..." She pauses, "Well, regular mages. Dark mages are known to enslave them with spells like mind control... They normally try to avoid dark magic."
...Interesting. Must be why you were able to escape or linger in that room. Though it sounds like Hilda might be at risk if she tried to enter.

If you want to run a fetish quest just be honest about it bro.

Because then we could cast the magic on the ossified chick to drop the ambient temperature and corner the Sculptor, weakening it before trying to enslave it and also gaining a second mind broken slave waifu.

Hilda wipes her eyes, "Well, usually dark mages kill them with a spell. Sculptors are constructs. If you cast a mind control spell, you take the creature from them, and if you cast corruption, you destroy the link, killing the creature..."

"So, if someone is turned to stone, how do you turn them back?"

"Uuuuh, light magic, a gold needle, a soft potion?" Hilda lists off, "I mean, there's a variety." You frown, unsure what to do for the statue. You don't have those spells... Mera does. At least you can kill the creature though.

"Are sculptors trackable by physical means?"

"No, they can phase through anything with heat, and create a cloud of heat around them."

Well, you could try going to Meras capital... or you could try to make a break for the shrine... or focus on killing the sculptor and explore at leisure.

It seems petrification is considered a disease here. You form a ball of corruption magic before you. Heat drains from the room. Infrared reveals a hunched, thin form of a creature, slinking away from you backwards.

"Leave this place." You order. The creature responds with a threatening stance, but backs up into a bookshelf.

Despite your entreaties to negotiation, the creature refuses to communicate, or cannot. With that said, you decide to end it.

Was it really a puzzle? There wasn't much puzzling about it. We couldn't even use coolant.

Nuclear power not withstanding if something operates in space it's going to need heat sinks. If something has weapons those are going to need cooling after firing as well.

I mean I get it was one vote late in the voting so I'm not mad we didn't use it, but I feel like it was just hand waved away.

I'm we noting the quest and the art is awesome though. Don't take my complaints as saying you should quit.

"Ah, it's warm... A sculptor was here?"

"Well, I did kill it." You explain. Hilda nods, but still looks a bit nervous, "What do you make of these books, Hilda?"

"Ah, secret libraries like this typically contained history books, but Mera made a point to destroy most of these."

"Any books that might be useful?"

"Well, there's some bestiaries... Plant catalogs, Here, I'll find them..." She gathers up books that you quickly glance through and take photos of.
>Your scans of the books are uploaded to your mech's computers, allowing you to identify creatures and plants on spotting them.
Hilda looks through the various tomes, but she reiterates that a lot of the information here is irrelevant. It's just stored knowledge, and a lot is outdated too.

You proceed to scan every book remotely relevant before telling Hilda to return to the mech.

Gun in hand, you enter the room, and the world fades to white.

Before you stands... stands... that's...

Mirna is wearing a Alpha Centauri Conglomerate mech pilot suit! Well, a dated one, hundreds of years back. Regarless, she taps at a scrolling data projection and glances towards you.

"Hello, Captain Alex. I cannot currently give you a blessing, but I do have a quest you can complete for it. However, aside from my quest, I will answer a total of four questions to you, as a gift. Provided they don't threaten myself or my allies. Details of the quest are not part of your question limit."

You think of the possible questions you could ask her.

And if you will accept her quest.

>What do you do?
>>
>>2157653
Accept the quest first and foremost, and ask for details on the quest.

as for other questions, ask about the mech pilot suit shes wearing, then ask about the gods we do not yet know about, magic in general, then the dwarves, because after we complete this quest of hers, we will likely be headed to them next and any background on them would be good in preperation.

What is your connection to Alpha Centauri?
What can change the nature of a god?

Leaving other two questions depending on answers... but possible candidates, off the top of my head...
>what power does a god have over their follower
>what is the exact objective I’m summoned for
>how do I release someone from gods’ thrall
>how can a summoned champion be returned home

But we already know that. There’s white magic for this which we can’t cast or learn and some Final Fantasy consumables. We can simply return here after recruiting a healer or visiting a shop. Although we’re gonna need a healer anyway if we want to remove elf slaves conditioning.

"I will accept your quest. But you will need to tell me what it is."

"Of course. Mera stole something from me, and I need it back... I will also improve the blessing if you restore my shrine custodian too. There is a magical ward for guarding my libraries. Mera's followers stole it, and I think it is being kept in her temple as a trophy... Yes, in the capital. Relax, the temple doesn't get traffic much these days, not since the palace became the place of worship." She responds cooly, with a slight smile, "You just need the disguise you got."

"So I get my questions then? My first is this: Why are you wearing a mech pilot suit, and your connection to Alpha Centauri?"

The goddess glares, "That's two ques-" She pauses, "Alpha... Centauri..." Her eye widen as she goes into a daze, then breaks into hysterics, "IT WASN'T A DREAM!!!" She grips her head with gloved hands, "Alpha Centauri. You said that, right?!" She's got a look of crazed desperation in her eyes.

"Y-yes?" You hesitantly asked, The Alpha Centauri Conglomerate?"

"Hahaha, oh to think... I've been here CENTURIES, Alex. do you know what that does? Centuries as a goddess. You forget who you were. I was human, that's right... Captain Mirna, 5th Machine Infantry." She grips her hair, "I have seen so many heroes pulled in from other places, realms, worlds... So many summoned, and not one from my home. I thought it was a fabrication..." She grips your arms, "Ooooh, it's real, you're real... What uniform is this? No, wait, Proxima Aquarii, right... It looks far more sleek than I recalled... Also the polarizing helmet too..."

"So, wait... You can't mean..."

"It's not our universe, Alex! Or it wasn't for me, I'm part of this thing now." She lets you go, "O-oh, right, goddess, right." She tries to regain her composure, "Next question."

"What are the gods we don't know about?"

Mirna raised an eyebrow, "Like, the gods Mera killed off? Or gods that are a secret? Because the former no longer exist. There are a few of the latter ones. I can't really tell you, though, I'm a goddess of knowledge, not secrets. Kinda disallowed. And at war with him."

You recall the god list you read earlier. your screen in your helmet bringing it up. Uld, God of Secrets. One of the other neutral gods.

"Um, if you ask Uld or Ygglith, those two could tell you. I'm sorry it doesn't make for much help... and your third?"

"Magic, in general, can you explain it?"

"You need a talent for it. Gods and goddesses can bestow talent. For instance, I'll grant you knowledge, and I have a favor with the goddess of magic to grant it to you." She pauses, "And the last?"

"What can you tell me about dwarves?"

"Huh? Well, they appeared with humans in the ancient history. For a while they were major capitalists, you know, like the Federation. But then they had an uprising of workers."
>continues
>>
>>2160169
"The dwarves then set up a system of equality, ruled by a central government, but all it managed to do was make the dwarven nation bankrupt. the society collapsed, and they split into different dwarven countries. They've returned to capitalism with fervor, but they live in the ruins of the old empire. It kind of shook the dwarven identity to the core." She frowns, "I guess it was like the People's Union of Planets back home? The dwarves use a variety of mechs for mining and defense, but they are kinda squat... but the armor is astounding."

She sighs, "So, um, if I give you another answer, could you please tell me how the Conglomerate is doing?"

The goddess was a fellow mech pilot, stranded on this world and ascended to godhood. She's the only one you know from where you came from...

...Either they tailor-made this scenario just for you in the LARP, or this planet isn't an eccentric nerd's paradise.

"The conglomerate is, well it exists... I mean, there was the secession war, but..." You try to go over history.

"Yes, that war, did we win?"

"The conglomerate won, barely. They got tied up in the Tisfel system, and the ground war went bad while the naval war carried the day. The People's Republic moved in and conquered the secessionists." You explain, "The Federation then engaged the People's Republic, which was spread out thin... we were still fighting them to this day... Your war was merely 300 years ago."

Mirna blinked, "But I've been here for much longer than that... Time is faster here than there. Well, regardless, you answered me, so whats the other question you have?"

We now know that at least 2 persons from our universe have been summoned here by some means. This might imply that - whatever our ostensible purpose of restoring balance and toppling Mera may be - there may be some greater hand or greater purpose in play here.

Does she have any knowledge (or at least suspicions) on this?

Failing that, could we get her number so we can talk shop about home some time?

"I have some of Acarit's weed, if you want to get high with me." You offer.

Mirna sighs, "Listen, I hate weed. Acarit and I are close friends, so I tried some long ago. I can't stand the stuff. Acarit's is meant to make you forget things from continued use, like what you care about. You'll just end up a happy elf after a while with no cares. It's how she copes. She puts herself in a perpetual high."

She pauses, "That... wasn't your question was it, Alex? Please tell me you didn't mean for that to be your question."
